I've read over the wiki and understand there's a lot of verified online shops that sell silver, but I try to support local businesses when I can.
I bought my first 6 x 1oz coins from a local shop for $2 over spot. They are nothing special, just generic APMEX. I am no longer purchasing silver from there though because while I was shopping for engagement rings I was asking the local jewelry shops about silver and when I mentioned this specific shop to them they all had something bad to say about it (Small town, everyone knows everyone. I don't think they were simply shit talking competition because when they asked me where else in town I'd looked for engagement rings they all had something nice to say about each other) and one shop owner even showed me an article from about 12 years ago where the shop owner of that specific store was caught purchasing and selling fake silver coins. I have since had the coins I purchased there checked by two other shops and they said they looked good.
All of my previous silver I have purchased has now been from the local shop I purchased my fiance's engagement ring from. The owner is very nice, knowledge, and his jewelry prices are good so I'd like to support his business.
But to finally get on the topic of the title, the last few coins I've purchased from this shop have been 2023 Queen 1oz maple leafs. I understand that some coins have a premium associated with them and I don't mind that, but I'm curious if I have been overpaying. I purchased some a couple days ago when spot was give or take $28, the shop owner showed me his computer screen to show me his price was roughly $34, and I walked out paying $37 per 1oz round.
Again, I understand some coins have a premium and the local shop has to make his money, but is 25% over spot a bit too much or is this what I should simply prepare myself to be paying for some coins? If that much of a premium is the case with some of these coins, are there any specific coins or bars that have less of a premium that I should look out for?
