Short Term Experience with Cityfibre and Gigabit Networks - with measurements and some details!
Hello folks. I thought of posting some very cursory, surface-level data on how CityFibre and Gigabit Networks has been performing for me and provide some numbers that i wish were available when i was searching myself.
Apologies in advance if a lot of this info is already well understood as well as for any conjecture that might be incorrect. If you spot any inaccuracies let me know and i will fix them.
This is the sort of post i wish was available to me when i was choosing a provider and obviously it is very biased to the details i care about. YMMV on whether or not any of this matters to you.

TL;DR

Overall, my short term experience with CityFibre + Gigabit Networks has been good. I am withholding long term judgement because i have not had a chance of using the high bandwidth available to these type of connections enough to know how heavily they might be oversubscribed.
I also don't have data on latency to popular consumer (ie: gaming) services. My personal opinion is that it may vary and will largely depend on which IP provider you will choose and how well they are connected to hyperscalers and other providers. Mine is a tiny regional provider so no expectation of them having a dedicated hand-off to any of the hyperscalers where a lot of those online services are hosted.
I can testify that the local loop provided by CityFibre to my ISP is stable and in the single-digit milliseconds range consistently which is good enough for me (more on that later). CGNAT is a pain and i plan to fork over the 5 GBP/month extra to get a Public IP from the ISP.

EDIT: While it wasn't a focus of my post, u/RandomBitFry mentions in the comments that Gigabit Networks' support panel is pretty much broken and Gigabit Networks is pretty unresponsive.
That matches my experience with them 100% and the only way i have gotten anything out of them is by calling in to their support number. If you are not a fan of phone calls, this is not the ISP for you.

The in-depth stuff

Basic data

Type of connection: Fiber to the Home with nominal 1 Gigabit/s symmetric bandwidth and CGNAT IP access.
Optical Access Provider: Cityfibre.
Internet Provider: Gigabit Networks.
Area: East Midlands.
Contractual Setup: Split optical access/IP access network handled by two different entities. My contract is only with Gigabit Networks but the Optical Access provider is very visible in the relationship and handles all the physical aspects of, and Day 1 communications about, the install.

CityFibre

Type of deployment: GPON deployment over BiDi optics (thanks u/hacman113 for confirming!).
CityFibre's website has a few press releases talking about their network but i have yet to see an in-depth look at their infra. If you know of any, please share it!
Physical delivery: Over-the-street aerial carrier wire from (BT?) Pole. Delivered and installed by Kelly Group.
Physical Entry point: Wire coming from the pole is attached to anchor point on house front then fiber cable down to ground level to a fiber box outside and then local tail entering the building through brick.
Optical Network Termination: Calix Gigapoint GP1000G. The ONT is terminated with a single SC connector over G.657.A2 Single Mode Fiber (Appears to be this Hexatronic product in particular) drop cable.

Data below is relevant to Gigabit Networks only as i believe CityFibre's role in the delivery of my access ends at the Layer 1/Layer 2 and all matters related to the actual Internet connectivity are, to my understanding, Gigabit Networks' responsibility.

Gigabit Networks

Stock CPE: Fritzbox 5530 It is delivered with already baked-in profiles for Gigabit Networks over CityFibre.

Addressing

Gigabit Networks made the choice of using RFC1918 (Private) IP addresses (in the 10.0.0.0/8 range) instead of CGNAT-dedicated IP space (100.64.0.0/10) for their subscribers.
This is very unfortunate and while it technically does not violate RFC6598 (the RFC does caveat that rfc1918 addressing can be used in some situations), it is in my opinion the worse of the two choices and using CGNAT space would have been more suitable.
Some third-party CPEs might struggle with having the same addressing on both sides of the WAN boundary and while Gigabit Networks has no obligation to account for all corner use cases, this was a missed opportunity to follow Internet conventions better.

WAN IP Assignment

DHCP over IPv4 (IPv6 is also available but i did not test it) over VLAN 911. There is (to my knowledge) no PPPoE or other Subscriber Access technology involved.
I believe tagging your traffic with vlan 911 and requesting an IP with DHCP should be enough to use a third party CPE but i have not tested that yet.
They may perform some form of MAC filtering which would require spoofing the Stock CPE's own MAC Address or possibly communicate to the ISP your new CPE's MAC. I will update this post once i got a chance of testing it.

Provider Connectivity / Capacity speculation

Gigabit Networks appears to have BGP sessions in both LONAP and LINX facilities in London to interface with the outer Internet, PeeringDB: Gigabit Networks Ltd.
Their only publicly advertised datacenter location seems to be Equinix LD6 in Slough.
I hope they have more, private, locations for some of their presence because otherwise this would be a rather concerning single point of failure (as rare as large DC outages might seem to be, they do happen).
However my connection to Google goes over a Zayo link so they are also (as they should) buying commercial IP transit. Screenshot: MTR to www.google.com.

an excerpt from an MTR traceroute to a Fastly destination

My connection to another popular Internet property goes instead over a Cogent link so they appear to have some form of diversity. Screenshot: MTR to a Fastly destination.

an excerpt from an MTR traceroute to a Fastly destination

Given they own their own IP space (although not much, a /22 and a /24), i am relatively confident they have resilient paths and would be able to deal competently with internet weather by moving their advertisements around in case of issues with one of their links.
Given they are a small ISP, i am slightly concerned their CGNAT capacity might be a bit more of a bottleneck than their diversity or peering layout.
Buying more beefy NAT boxes is expensive especially for a startup that might not have an established relationship with hardware vendors and deep discounts (pure speculation on my part! it's possible they splurged and they have a lot of headroom in NAT capacity too. It is a resource that is directly tied to compute and new kit that can do in the hundreds of gigs of line rate NAT is released every year so this might not be a problem).
For this reason, i will purchase their Public IP service so that i am off their NAT boxes and just receive IP transport from them.

Measurements

I have a prometheus instance at home running blackbox_exporter and hitting a few different destinations. I have been collecting data for a bit more than a week, hitting a couple of nodes on the Gigabit networks as well as a few Internet properties with ICMP and HTTP HEAD requests.
All probes were performed by a vanilla Ubuntu box on bare metal (i5-4xxx, 16 gb ram) over onboard Gigabit ethernet, into a switch and straight into Gigabit Networks' stock Fritzbox CPE. The CPE is the first IP hop from the prometheus box.

BIG DISCLAIMER: both the ICMP and HTTP measurements carry with them massive caveats.ICMP is not really representative of real world traffic and in this context it probably represents at best an absolute best case scenario and i wouldn't expect real world traffic to behave the same way.

TCP and UDP traffic might be choppier, windowing might be a mess for whatever reason, shaping might be in place etc.
HTTP measurements are more realistic but they are infinitely more impacted by the status of the application server you are hitting than the actual network path to them so the raw numbers do not mean much.

If the BBC takes 300 ms to send back a blob of HTML headers to me, it's very likely not Gigabit Networks' fault.

ICMP Reachability

Gigabit Networks ICMP Reachability.

Gigabit Networks ICMP Reachability

Line in green represents my CPE first IP hop in Gigabit's Network. This is the first IP node after CityFibre's optical network handoff to Gigabit that replies to ICMP pings.
It may not be physically the first box owned by Gigabit on my path but for all intents and purposes it is as close as i can measure from a network standpoint and thus it is, to me, a fair representation of the CityFibre path between me and my ISP.
Over the course of a few days, it never dropped and Round-Trip-Time was steadily below 8 ms. Given this is still technically an on-net path, it could be better.
Note that the destination is inside my ISP network and thus likely to be before CGNAT is applied so that wouldn't be a factor.
With that said, it is still single-digit ms across the access portion of their network so i am satisfied with it until i will have a reason not to be.
Line in Yellow represents the last hop i could find that replies to traceroute packets with a Gigabit Networks' owned IP. This node is likely after CGNAT is applied to my traffic and i consider this to be the "edge" of Gigabit Networks from my perspective.
The next hop is frequently either a commercial transit link (Zayo or Cogent) or in some cases a LONAP handoff.
I view this as the correct hop to measure "end-to-end" my path to the Internet as this is the only portion that is under Gigabit Networks sole control.

HTTP Tests

Common Internet Destinations HTTP Reachability.

Common Internet Destinations HTTP Reachability

Google takes about 30 ms to reply to a HTTP Head. Of that, about 9 ms are spent getting to Google and the rest is waiting on Google to render the fulfill the HTTP request within their network netprobe-google-http: breakdown by phase.

netprobe-google-http: breakdown by phase

BBC takes quite a bit longer but again, only ~17ms of it are spent reaching their HTTP Edge and the rest is internal request handling: netprobe-bbc-http: breakdown by phase.

netprobe-bbc-http: breakdown by phase

In the future, i plan on swapping the Fritzbox with my own Juniper SRX340 firewall, purchase Gigabit Networks public IP service and once my home office is setup, possibly do some gaming and inspect my path to those servers and report back here with similar measurements for them.
Hope this helps!

2024.04.08 22:16 JoulesBurns Help choosing TWO breeds that would get along well [Breeds]

**Introduction**
1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?* The first dog I was close to was born the same month I was and she went everywhere with me as a child. My father was a show handler and later judge. I grew up with Boxers and then Shelties when I was a teen. I currently live with my sister who has a Min Pin and am fairly involved. I often watched and cared for my brother's weimaraner and vizsla. My first on my own dog was a Potcake/American Village Dog who I only took through puppy star. She had been a shelter puppy, and had major fear of other dogs from a ridiculously young age. Did some playful trick training and household training with her and she was an out and about companion when she was doing well with reactivity, but often had to pull back more than I wanted to. Did a lot of enrichment toys and find it games and the like for her mental stimulation, but all just for fun. I'm more confident doing training with food motivated dogs, but I well know this can be down to the individual.
2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a [reputable breeder]( http://ownresponsibly.blogspot.com/2011/07/identifying-reputable-breeder.html)?* Reputable Breeder, this time. My girl was spay incontinent from being shelter spayed as a puppy and screamed at the sight of other dogs from the moment I got her when she was 12 weeks old. Wanting something raised with a good start, good health testing, and an ENS program.
3) Describe your ideal dog.\* Ideally a dog that would be comfortable going on trails and doing some hiking and camping or traveling around dog friendly cities. I don't need them to be best friends with everyone, but I'd like them to be able to handle being around people at events. I'd like them to have decent off switch/settle ability indoors. I'd like to stick around moderate energy and have a dog that isn't constantly prodding for more play in an obsessive way. I'm happy to have them laying on me or chilling in the same space. I would like them at least a little eager to please and interact. Would like something that can tend a little more towards happy or goofy.
4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?\* Looking at Silken Windhounds heavily with aside consideration to whippets. I really love their looks and the smooth movement of their gait is gorgeous. I also like that sighthounds have a purportedly good off switch indoors and I think a dog joy running is gorgeous anyway. I'm only really leery for the glass canon aspect they can have in being a bit delicate.
Also considering the Bedlington Terrier which I really like the lighter coat texture and longer face and tight triangle ears compared to poodles. I doubt I'd do the funny cut very much, and I honestly like their conformation in being a bit sighthoundy. Their personality traits seem pretty good, but they are a bit harder to research as info on them seems a little slim even within their club site. Somewhat the same for the Basenji, though my step mother had one so I have met one, but I know they usually hate water and I love water and already own a small doggy play pool. Both of these are on the smaller side of the size I'd like to have, but the Bedlington is currently high on the list.
Trying to talk myself into a poodle as I know they all around probably fit what I need since they're sort of a generalist but I really don't love the look of their coat, and I'm not talking about the cuts. I really prefer the look of a naturally smooth faced dog is really the shallow fact of it, and I do know that also goes for the Bedlington. A tight shaved poodle looks like a raggety weim in shape, if I'm honest. I'm also concerned by the size range of the standard since they can often get into the 60lb+ and my goal is around 40lb with flex on either side. Whereas I'd really like to stay above 25lb which is a bit of an issue for the miniature and moyen/medium breeders it seems like. Also, finding undocked is an issue in the US.
Others that have been on the short list (but are mostly off) were springer spaniels, wheaten terriers, carolina dog, and irish setter. I like a ton of dog breeds and especially like full snout/tight lipped profiles. Most of my favorites are high energy or high drive and I don't really feel like I could meet their needs. Border collie is probably my favorite breed in looks, but I know I'll never be enough for them. I don't want anything brachy though.
5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do? I want to do general training and adapt from there based on what the dog enjoys. First and foremost I want a dog for being a dog. I've considered training up a therapy dog or doing some agility training, but more for the dog's enrichment than my own interest in competition. For the sighthounds I was considering FCAT or fly ball and for the terrier Barn Hunt and the like. Dock diving would probably be fun. I'd like to train for recall, but I'd never try to rely on it, if that makes sense. I'm most interested in is just being able to enjoy my dogs.
6) Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport?\* Mostly answered this above, I think. I'm considering myself open to the possibility of getting into sports, but it would just be for fun and I know how ridiculous the people culture can get there. I would consider conformation a bit since there are some rarer breeds in my short list, but I'm not dedicated to the idea currently. I do like when a dog is at least a bit more engaged and I know that's a bit of a toss up for some of my interest list.
**Care Commitments**
7) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?\* I'd consider a 30min AM/1hr PM schedule reasonably doable with that likely being higher for a puppy. I can also take day time breaks to do short training sessions.
8) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?\* Part of this would be in the AM/PM schedule. I'd rather do one neighborhood walk a day than two, if I'm honest, but I don't mind a exercise walk and a later sniff stroll at least some of the week. Weekend hiking and park trails are definite once they're old enough. I would not do dog parks, but I know for silkens they coordinate breed meet ups, and I would possibly do that now and then if it's part of the breed culture. I know the dog daycare nearby at least says that they do evaluated play groups for their day camps. I might consider that when young, but I'm really on the fence with it. Would also like a dog that could be trained for fetch games for extra yard exercise if they're too pent up. I've also used flirt poles, kongs, pinata boxes, and brain games for bad weather. I'd also probably figure out outlet games for whatever breeds are picked. (Ex. My girl had a drive to dig, so we made dig games to tell her when and where it was appropriate to dig.)
9) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?\* Weekly brushing would be fine. I could probably get used to daily if needed. If I do get a high groom breed, my plan would be to learn to groom them myself, though I find especially things like ear hair plucking a bit daunting. I have a harder time trusting someone with my dog out of my sight, but I'd probably also at least find someone to do washes with when they're young for exposure to being handled by other people calmly.
**Personal Preferences**
10) What size dog are you looking for?\* Really looking at the 30-40 range ideally. 60+ I think would be a bit much at this point, and especially because the goal is to have two dogs.
11) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?\* No worse than a boxer or a sheltie, so. LOL Honestly would rather deal with trying to train down barking a bit than getting jowels rubbed down my arm after every meal. There is an allergy concern in the family, but they are already medicating, but it's probably smarter to go with a lower dander dog or at least one that is lower.
12) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?\* I would love to train reliable recall, but I don't mind staying paranoid and keeping on leash in all unfenced areas. I live near a metro, so there's not great opportunity for open available land anyway. And having had a reactive dog, I have no problem with staying on leash in public trails.
**Dog Personality and Behavior**
13) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?\* I'd be happy with a snuggly dog. My last girl was more of a roommate dog who hated when anyone moved too much on the same couch. I'd like something a little more snuggly this time, but I'm not going to be heart broken if they're a little more aloof. I'd like more middle of the road than pure velcro as far as constantly touching.
14) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?\* I think a little of both. I do like a dog that can entertain itself at times, but I really do like when they're happy to engage and interact more. So scale tipped towards eager-to-please without needing constant attention.
15) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?\* I'm very used to alert barkers, so I don't mind it. I would like the ability to train a good ability to think and realize things are ok and calm down quickly. I don't mind a little aloof, but I'd like gregarious enough to get on out in public without it stressing them out.
16) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?\* I'd rather be lower risk on this scale as I do want to have two and I've already had to deal with a dog who was dog fearful. I'd rather not every 'my dog is just saying hello' I come across be a massive set back this time.
17) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?\* I'd really like to avoid a poop or rock eater as those are way harder to manage or train down. Barking is also self reinforcing so a little less prone to barking, but honestly rather a barker than coprophagia or constantly worrying about blockage
**Lifestyle**
18) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?\* 1-2 hours at a time with maybe 4 hours on a weekend now and then. We're fairly homebody and when we do go out it is often to outdoor shopping or parks that are fairly dog friendly territory. I'm more worried right now about doing alone training to lessen the chance of separation anxiety.
19) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?\* Spouse would be fully involved and for some reason has a preference of the second dog being another breed for variety. They also aren't as interested in the whippet for the good silken/whippet combo pack. They also want no unnecessary altering like docking which narrows the breeder pool for some breeds by a lot. They on the same page with a park/trail companion but are less interested in the formal training aspects.
20) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?\* Currently have two older cats who grew up with my previous girl. Once they are gone, I plan to be a two dog only household so I do plan to get the second dog when the first is young (12-18months).
21) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?\* That's not a current possibility. I don't mind doing room management for visits if it was needed.
22) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?\* No.
23) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?\* Near Atlanta. Not aware of anything hard on books for breeds.
24) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?\* Summer can get up towards 90F, but usually not for very long. The last few winters have been really mild with it rarely being below 40F.
**Additional Information and Questions**
25) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.\* The current plan would be to eventually have a male and a female since that's the best bet for everyone getting along.
26) Feel free to ask any questions below. Looking for advice on two breeds who are likely to get along really well and might have an easier time matching play styles. Mostly just trying to get help settling the question as we've been doing a drain circle on this for a long while now.

2024.03.12 22:14 milkshaqu Having trouble recovering a corrupted 32gb microsd

I'm not familiar with data recovery at all and I really need help. I made this post in a different subreddit about how the microsd I use for my ds has been corrupted. What happened was I tried making a new folder on the sd but when I did that, there was a file called USBC. in it already. I didn't ever create this file, I got confused and tried deleting the folder. but it would not let me do this, so I took the sd out of my computer and reinserted it. Whenever I put it back in, windows was telling me that I needed to reformat the sd card. There was data on this that I don't want to lose, but I've been careless in the fact that I haven't backed up this sd card in quite a while. If I use my old backup, I'll still have lost quite a bit of data. After trying to find a solution for a while, and after the chkdsk command on terminal not working, I found this post and tried the testdisk program it talked about. It was quite useful in the fcat that after I used it, windows no longer asked me to reformat the sd card. But I still have a problem, since my data is still gone (and the device I want to use the sd with doesn't even recognise it at this point). Whenever I check the contents of the sd, the only thing left on it is the USBC. file I mentioned earlier. It says that the file takes up 0kb, but when I look at the properties of the sd card it says I have used up the same amount of storage that I had before the corruption. I cannot move or copy this file out of my sd, as windows tells me filename is invalid / too long. I'm really lost. I came to this subreddit from this guide that somebody left under my other post. Though this guide seems useful, it isn't really working for me? Does anybody have any ideas on what I can do to fix this?

2024.02.24 03:42 Confident_Fishing693 The cuts of Central Board of Film Certification run deep (political influence of the BJP Govt is heavily involved in these cuts)

The cuts of Central Board of Film Certification run deep (political influence of the BJP Govt is heavily involved in these cuts)
Excerpts from the article:
The CBFC routinely orders changes to movies: a toning down or removal of sexual content, violence, and abusive language, especially if the filmmaker would like a more favourable age rating (a U or U/A, rather than an A or S). Of late though, a different kind of censorship has taken shape, regardless of what a film’s classification is. These modifications go beyond the guidelines on the CBFC website. Instead, they span the government’s concerns on diplomatic relations, police overreach, political balance, religion and caste.
Filmmaker Onir, whose 2010 film I Am won the National Award for Best Hindi Film, said that the CBFC’s censorship has expanded in recent years. In the past, Mr. Onir recalled having recourse to the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) to appeal cuts to his films. “But now, there are no tribunals,” he pointed out. The FCAT was abolished in 2021, a move that the Union government said was a part of overall reforms of tribunals in the country. Mr. Onir said that not all filmmakers had the resources to go to a High Court, where CBFC decisions can now be appealed.
In the Awadhi film Hari Shabnam, censors cut a scene showing a police officer taking a bribe. The 2021 Kannada film 100 cut out “naaye” (dog) from all dialogues referring to police officers. In the Tamil drama film Vindhya Victim Verdict V3 (2023), a line referring to a character as a “former IPS officer” was removed.
In 2017, a committee headed by veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal said in a report that the CBFC should expand its age ratings and give up its censorship powers for films. The Union government, which constituted the committee, did not accept this suggestion, and instead proposed a Cinematograph Amendment Bill in 2021 that would grant it powers to withdraw certification for films it had already cleared, a provision that had previously been struck down by the Supreme Court. The Bill has not been introduced for passage in Parliament since.
The on-screen version of the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Pathaan introduces one of the villain’s henchmen as an ex-SBU agent. The SBU, or the Sluzhba Bespeky Ukrayiny, is the Security Service of Ukraine. However, the original, pre-screen cut of the film announced the character as ex-KGB, a former agent of the erstwhile Soviet Union’s spy agency, the Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which orders cuts and modifications to films before they are released, asked the filmmakers to make this change before it could be screened publicly.
In fact, this is just one of over 1,000 cuts and changes ordered on over 300 films across multiple languages (including English) that were cleared for theatrical release across the country over the last few months. The Hindu collected and reviewed the censor board’s data on cuts made between November 2022 to the first week of February 2023 from two of the CBFC’s nine regional offices (Mumbai and Chennai), to understand the larger context in which the board seeks changes to films.
In the case of Pathaan, for instance, the seemingly innocuous swap of spy agencies could reflect on India’s growing oil imports from Russia, even as the country balances its global position with regard to the war in Ukraine. It is unlikely that the antagonist Jim’s henchman being either ex-SBU or ex-KGB made any difference to filmgoers; the film has reportedly grossed over ₹887 crore since it was released on January 25.
The Hindi dub of the Tamil film Mookuthi Amman (2020), a fantasy-comedy, was ordered to remove a reference to the “Prime Minister”, with a parenthetical simply saying that the use was a “wrong reference”.
The Telugu version of the Tamil comedy film Gulu Gulu (2022) was similarly ordered to remove a reference to “India Prime Minister”, with no explanatory note. In Pathaan, references to the PM and the Prime Minister’s Office were replaced 13 times with the more generic “Minister” or even with “the President”.
In the yet-unreleased Hindi crime fiction film Dil Hai Gray, censors ordered the removal of the term “government” itself, along with a reference to “Motabhai”, without explanation.

2024.01.30 10:36 Shimmering_65 Katherine, A Rant

I’m writing this on my phone, so the formatting, spelling, etc will probably be prettt sub par, sorry in advance. This is just my opinions, which I had to convey to someone because it’s been nagging at time for the longest time. You can like or dislike any charcaters you want, and I’m not saying my opinions should be law, just sharing my thoughts.
I want to start this off by saying, I started off appreciating her charcater. My taste in charcaters is usually those who are more good orientated; so I’m aware that I was never going to love her charcater. But, she was a damn good villain.
That entire masquerade party in season 2 was perfect. And when she pretended to be Elaina to kill that warlock? So cool. Her leaving after giving damon Klaus’s blood to cure his werewolf bite slightly redeemed her for me, and the fact that she went into hiding makes perfect sense. It also made sense (sort of) when she wanted the cure (the eliminate the threat of Klaus) and her karmic punishment of being turned in to a human was was so funny. And then she had her redemption arc: helped stefan with his trauma, fought the temptation to commit suicide for the sake of her daughter, hell even (sort of) apologised to Elena.
And then she possessed Elena as a passenger. And, I’m going to be real with all of you, I skipped those episodes. I felt so cheated. I hate invested so much in sympathising with Katherine only for her to throw all of it away. And I was so done.
And, when I couldn’t handle waiting to watch the entire series and looked up spoilers, and found out she was queen of hell, I honestly just had to laugh.
I feel like they ran a good charcater into the mud, to the point she’s just being evil for the sake of being evil.
I do sympathise with Katherine, having her child taken away from her, her family killed, and being on the run, that is so much trauma for one person to face. My real problem is her lack of empathy, particularly towards Elena. Katherine knows the Greif of losing loved ones, the fear of being hunted purely for just existing, and being swept up in machinations beyond one’s control. But, she throws her fellow doppelgänger under the bus. It makes perfect sense for her character to do so, but still, it irks me.
Her tale of survival over the centuries was inspiring, manipulating her way through the world with expert precision, i loved her for that. And it was smart how she pretended to be Elena. But, it got to the point where it was over the top imo.
Like, manipulating the Salvatore brothers and leaving them with permenant trauma? Turing in emily as soon as she no longer had use for her? Betraying all the other tomb vampires by escaping last minute? Still manipulating the Salvatore brothers, particularly damon, when she came back? Yeah no.
He blatant disregard for others, shown perfectly in her attitude towards damon (calling Elena being in a relationship with him the worst mistake of her life, for example) really makes me feel much less empathy for her.
You know when a charcaters action makes sense, but it still irritates you? Katherine being upset with elena for having a better life is that for me. Yes, objectively, Katherine has been through more than elena. But Elena’s life hasn’t been a cakewalk either, and it’s not Elena’s fault that what happened to Katherine happened. And yet, she blames elena. I can see why, but it’s still irritating.
I also think it’s worth mentioning she acts as a vampire without humanity without turning it off. He personality inherently inclined her to murder and such.
IMO it would have been a perfect end for her if she had died after Elena’s apology, and if she didn’t passenger into Elena’s body, instead, her charcater was dragged along for a few more episodes for no reason.
I’ve often seen an arguement in her favor be that she turned Caroline, and Caroline ended up better because of that. Katherine didn’t know that. In fcat, she was going to have Caroline be the sacrifice in the ritual. Yes, Katherine did something good for Caroline, but purely by accident (and she manipulated Caroline too using threats against her loved ones so there’s that).
So, in conclusion, Katherine, imo, was a great villain who went downhill. She has experienced significant trauma, but her lack of empathy towards others and her teased but never seen through redemptions make her unbelievably irritating to me.

2023.12.13 01:57 Efficient-Shirt-4118 Support needed

I’m 26, “graduated” hs with a certificate of completion because I didn’t pass the FCAT 😖 it’s so annoying, the language arts test was the first ged test I took and passed it by a few points. Anyway, I have the math test left and I’ve failed it by ONE point twice already. I feel discouraged because ive been putting it off pretty much ever since 2018 it’s embarrassing to show the timeframe of when the tests were taken and honestly just don’t want to do it anymore cause i suck at tests, clearly. Does anyone have any tips on studying for it? Im a stay at home mom and come April my youngest kid will be in daycare so there’s no more excuses as to why I don’t have something going for myself. I feel stuck and in a rut. There’s so much I want to do and I feel so uneducated. I could use any tips and honest motivation cause I feel like a bum and disappointment to my children and fiancé. Thanks 😵‍💫

Have you ever wanted to go to a Dog Show?
Infodog.com is your go-to website for discovering dog shows in your area that you can attend. To help you navigate the site, I have included some screenshots for reference. All Breed shows are a great choice as they offer a wide variety of dog breeds for you to watch and enjoy. However, please remember a couple of important rules. It is recommended that if your dog is not entered into the show, it's best to leave them at home. Additionally, always ask for permission before petting other people's dogs. Not every dog is comfortable with strangers, and we strive to create enjoyable events for our furry friends just as much as for ourselves. Lastly, don't hesitate to ask questions, engage with fellow attendees, and make new friends along the way.

2022.10.27 03:03 nikkipizza [HAPPENING NOW] Important SFSS Council Meeting - LIVE UPDATES - Revisitation of Controversial Call for Annual SFSS Donation to an External Organization & Revisitation of Questions of "Anti-Indigeneity" and "Pro-Colonial Rhetoric" of the SFSS

Hi all,
There is an SFSS Council Meeting happening right now, open to all students.
We will be revisiting the request for the annual $10,000 donation to an external organization. To specify, this donation was proposed to happen indefinitely, and every year.
Some Councillors have asked for more information (due diligence) regarding their questions about the external organization prior to donating (context here), which has created controversy and a strong request for condemnation and apology from the SFSS Council for "anti-Indigenous and pro-colonial rhetoric."
There are also other items on the agenda, which can be found on the SFSS website.
---
Feel free to refer to the previous posts on this topic.
Live Updates Post (Context)
Preliminary Student Poll and Further Discussion
---
This discussion has been controversial within Council, and responses from the SFU community have indicated that more discussion is warranted.
Council is currently in-camera (confidential) and likely will be going ex-camera (public) in a few minutes. You can join using the link on the SFSS website. (UPDATE 6:26pm - We are now ex-camera and discussing the motion regarding the external donation).
Thanks everyone!
Kind regards,
Nikki Kirigin, Vice-President University & Academic Affairs
Simon Fraser Student Society

Counselor from school: Pretty good. I have known her since my freshman year and she’s known me both in an academic and athletic context.

11th grade English teacher: I had a really close relationship with her and she also helped develop my writing skills.
Interviews
Dartmouth (9.5/10) - This was my first interview and my interviewer was really down to Earth. I was able to talk about all the different aspects of myself that I wanted to get across. I had high hopes for Dartmouth after this one (lol).
Northwestern (6/10) - This felt very rushed as my interviewer was trying to keep to a certain time. I wasn’t able to get all the things across that I wanted to and I got stumbled on a few questions. We bonded over the fact that she taught at my school before and her kids were currently applying to my school/private schools like my school. She left me hanging and didn’t show up to out first scheduled time so we had to reschedule it. I didn’t feel the best about my chances at Northwestern already and this didn’t help.
Wesleyan (7.5/10) - It was short and with a current student. It was super chill and laid back. She didn’t have any set interview questions for me and it was more of a conversation despite the fcat that it was an evaluated interview. I kind of wish it was a bit more formal though because I don’t think I was able to truly talk about why I was interested in the school and more things about myself.

Personal Statement (9/10) - I rewrote my common app essay six times to get it to be the way I wanted it. It was an overall very vulnerable process for me and I think I was able to show a lot of different sides of me…all from a very mundane topic as well :)
Overall supplemental essays: I would rate my supplemental essays overall very highly. I spent a lot of time on them and decided to focus on quality and not quantity in terms of the amount of schools I applied to so that I could perfect my essays. I knew as a test optional applicant, that more focus would be put on them so I put in a good amount of work for them. I think I am also a pretty good writer in general and it comes somewhat easy to me so that probably helped as well.

2022.01.08 00:05 FoxAlistair This build makes Plague the 2nd best killer in the game :D

I've ran this build on Plague a lot of times now and I've won most of my games using it either due to getting all five stacks or survivors DCing. But anyways, I'm fully convinced that this build makes Plague one of the strongest killers in the game, so here it is:

The build:
Deadlock, Thanatophobia, Pentimento, Plaything

Now it's no secret that Pentimento + Plaything is a deadly combo, but on Plague it is a nightmare to face. If you combine it with the fact that she can use Thanatophobia better than any killer and the fcat that she can get her corrupt purge at any point in the game when she wants to, you've got yourself a game-slowing, fast-downing, kill-rushing machine. The fourth slot can be whatever you want, I choose Deadlock though.
Whatcha think? You wanna cause true pain as killer? :)

2021.05.19 18:38 OllieGarkey Can we talk about the NAP, Property, Taxes, and the history of States?

So I'm not interested in some sort of formal debate where we all win on the internet for totally pwning people who disagree with us with FCATs and Logique.
I'm actually interested in the reasoning behind the right-libertarian/individualist libertarian view of taxation as theft.
I raised this in a conversation on reddit, have gotten downvotes but no responses, and so I figured the best place to raise it would be here where instead of random folks who happen to have a libertarian perspective but aren't the best at explaining it, I'd find people who are quite good at explaining it.
My view is that any attempt to define taxes as theft under the Non Aggression Principal inherently defines any property which is land or goods derived from land also as theft under the NAP.
The Homestead Principal makes sense only if the earth is empty and land is unused. But unfortunately for us, literally all land on which any country sits exists as land stolen from some other group at some point. This is even true of groups such as Kurds or Scots or Han Chinese whose histories are older than recorded history.
(To be specific, the Scots are the descendants of Gaels, Picts, Angles, Vikings, and several other groups, with the Picts being mentioned directly with the earliest written history mentioning what is now Scotland by Pytheas of Massalia in the 3rd century BC. The Kurds are also descended from multiple groups including the Medes of the 13th century BC, but also Parthians, Armenians, and various Persian groups. The Han Chinese are descended from the Neolithic peoples of the yellow river but conquered and supplanted other neighbors nearby.)
All of these groups conquered their neighbors at such stages, or were conquered from within by thugs with weapons, who declared themselves to be the nobility and demanded protection payments in the form of taxes.
Literally all property currently held descends not from that homestead principal, but from conquering states, and was established by conquering states.
If taxes are a violation of the NAP, then how is stolen property - which all property inherently is thanks to the violent origins of property - not itself a violation of the NAP?
Is it just a game of luck where the people who ultimately ended up with control of all these stolen goods get to keep them when the state is disestablished, or is there a mechanism within right libertarianism for dealing with the consequences of history which have actively harmed so many people, such as the Native Americans?
Again, I'm not interested in a fight, but I am interested in whether this is dealt with, and if so, how?
I'd be happy to just politely discuss this even though as an Anarchist without adjectives who wants to disassemble economic as well as state power structures there are places where we might disagree.
I genuinely want to understand the thinking here.

2021.05.13 13:29 STC_Ducky The Worst Part of Vermintide (and how to improve it)

I think we can all agree that vermintide is pretty fun.
Actually, that's an understatement, It's RIDICULOUSLY fun. Not my most played game on steam but with 450h on the clock I can say that I got my money's worth. What kept me playing for that long is the gameplay, that sounds obvious, becouse it is, killing pact-sworn is really satisfying and the extreamly high variaty and skill ceiling help the gameplay from becoming boring. So then, what's the worst part? Easy. Not doing that.
Allow me to explain.
The worst part about vermintide is simply put, every single second you spend in the game that's not the gameplay in other words your progression. I don't think it's controversial to say that rewards start to feel emply and pointless at a certain point in the game, however I'm going to dive deeper into each possible reward and expain why all of them aren't all that fun to receive, as well as giving sugestions how to improve them keeping resources needed to implement these to a minimum.
1) Loot chest
By far the most common for of loot, you get one at the end of each adventure and the quality of the chest is boosted by the amount of dice, tomes and grims collected (as well as whatever Ranald is happy or not). This is actually a really solid idea, risk/reward system of harder mission/better loot is really good. The problem we face is loot itself, It's really easy to get a grasp on game mechanics and be playing on champion around the 20h mark, you will also level up in the meantime, increasing your power and once you have an orange weapon with a max level character, you basically can't get any better. Yes, reds exist but they are way, way to rare and mechanically nearly identical to oranges. If fact (in case you didn't know) you can roll max stats on an orange weapon, I have an orange geatsword with 5% attack speed and 30% block cost reduction, if I was ever to drop a red greatsword, It's mechanically identical to the orange one. To make matters worse is the fact that you can't simply choose your stats, you need to roll for them, which is a slow, boring process that adds nothing to the game except waste your time, becouse you will be swimming in blue and green dust if you spend more than 50h in the game.
Improvement idea: The use of red weapon right now is showing off, that's it, so can easly make them even more show-offy for higher-end players. Red weapons could count kills that you made with them, same as strange weapons from TF2, you could then hower over the red weapon in your iventory and show off as it says "100 000 enemies slain". If you want to go further Lohner's emporium could sell modifications to red weapons to count specific things such as "stormvermin slain", "enemies pushed", "friendly fire damage done" ect.
2) Ravaged art
The second most common collectable, ravaged art can be found on any map and rewards you with a map specific paining for collecting 3 and 30 piecies of art on the map. Unlike every other collectable item in the game where art spawns is randomized and there is A LOT of various places it can spawn in. My biggest problem with art is that collecting it takes a really long time, since it was added to the game I probably played for around 200 hours and I have exactly two paintings for collecting 30 pieces, on most maps I have around 15-20. Collecting art takes way too long and the reward is at that someone in a lobby might say "nice painting" if you put it in the main room of the keep, becouse no one is going to Saltzpire's quaters to see the Sienna painting you put on the wall there.
Improvement idea: It's much more satisfying to get paintings for completing challanges instead of just grinding the same map over and over again. In fact the cosmetic packs for GK and engineer already reward you paintings for completing challenges. You can add more challanges or re-purpose the series of Helmgart challanges to reward new art instead. More frames for painings should also be added around the bridge of shadows so that you can more easly show off your hard work.
3) Banners and Throphy room
For completing missions and defeating lords you get banners and throphies. These are a fine addition, there is nothing really exciting about them, but as a new player it's actually fun to get them. What I absolutly do not get is why Chaos wastes don't have any equivilant to this. Weaves have leaderboards for those that care, but not having anything change in the pigramage room was a huge dissapointment for me when I completed my first citadel.
Improvement idea: Have 4 banners, one for each expedition hanging in the pilgrimage chamber, have the altars to diffrent gods upgrade upon completing the citadel expedition with the appropriate character. You don't even need to add new models, you can simply take those models that appear as treasure in the citadel and add them to the chamber.
4) Frames
Hilariously, a simple frame you get around your character is one of the better reward types in the game. There are a lot of frames to collect and many of them are specifically aimed at high-end players. I have no real problem with frames except for the fact that at this point they are the bare minimum of a reward for doing something hard and fatshark doesn't give anything away as easly as these frames.
Improvement idea: Stop relying on frames so much, also add a frame for compliting all Helmgart missions on cata as all careers.
5) Skins, Shilling and Lohner's Emporium of Greed
Okay, first of is the Emporium an improvement over the Bogenhafen Chests? Yes, but in the immortal words of captain Price "It's not hard to improve on garbage." The biggest problem with the chests was the fcat that it was a grind to get a completly random item. Now it's a grind to get the item you want, which is an improvement. But the grind is still real. Let's say that you play a lot of slayer and again, to show off, you want to get the most expensive slayer hat, which is just the basic slayer hat with an eyepatch. that one will set you back 1840 shillings. You get the base of 4 weekly quests and 2 more if you own the Bogenhafen and Ubersreik dlcs. On top of day you get one daily quest per day. This combined means that you can earn a max of 375 shillings per week and would need to spend at least FIVE WEEKS of doing every quest to get this hat. Now, I get it, these are supposed to be drip, cream de la cream of Vermintide showmanship, but getting a hat for a month of playing doesn't really seem worth it. Not to mention that some careers, like ranger have about 4 hats and the rest are reskins. The illusion prices are also absurd considering that you are not really able to flex with illusions at all.
Improvement idea: So, it's a grind, okay, this whole game is a grind, what bugs me the most about it is that you can't get more shillings than the game allows, so It's an artificial grind becouse there is to actual way to grind shillings since there is a cap. The smple solution to this is having a way for us to grind shillings and we have just that. We can reward shillings for completing expeitions at a rate of 5 for recruit, 25 for veteran, 50 for champion, 100 for legend, 200 for cataclysm. That slayer player would need to complete 19 legend expeditions to get the hat, which sounds very time consuming and hard, but at least this would give us the option to grind istead of having a cap on it, completing 19 expeditions is way faster than waiting 5 weeks.
6) Weave Expeditions and essence
This is just a little sidenote, weaves have been vastly improved since release, but that does not mean they are perfect. First off, the essence gained for completing weaves is laughable, even recruit weaves tend to be harded than legend missions and they give way, wayyyyyyyyy too little essence, essectially forcing you to go and play some other gamemode so that you can play weaves, it's stupid. Another thing is that the only reward for completing weaves is frames which are, as I mentioned before. The bare minimum and still way too little for people to give the mode a try due to it's quite frankly horrid reputation.
Improvement Idea: We need a cool reward for playing waves, and the answer to this has been in the palm of our hand the entire time. WEAVE-FORGED WEAPONS, some of the skins for weave forged weapons are simply beautiful and rewarding these would go a long way for people to give the mode a try. The simplest way I can thinkabout implementing this is a quest for each weapon, every 5 unique harder weaves you would receive a new weave-forged illusion. For example If you complete waves 1-5 as Markus you get a weave-forged Halbard, 6-10 is Handgun ect. This would also work becouse as you unlock more weaves you can play specific ones to get the weapon you want, so you usually play Marcus, but want to unlock the weave-forged flaming flail, you simply use Marus to get to weave 55 and then play sienna on weaves 50-55 to get the flail. Oh and increase the amount of essence you gain, seriously you need 21k essence to upgrade a weapon to max, you get around 800 essence per legend game that's around 26 legend games to completly upgrade a weapon.

So, that's it, this is my analisis of the worst part of vermintide and ideas on how to improve it, a lot of people say that fatshark is lazy and while sometimes It's hard to disagree with that statement I personally think it's due to having so many internal projects, remember versus mode? Still, I think my ideas are easy to implement and would at the very least be a net gain over the current systems, what do you guys think about them? Is there something I missed or are my ideas actually bad?

2020.06.14 06:31 deama15 General screen tearing/stutter fix for non gsync/freesync users

I posted this on another subreddit, but thought I'd post it here too cause this is a PC reddit.
I encountered this interesting addition on another forum, so I thought I'd rephrase it here for anyone that's interested, as well as add some more bits to it from what testing I've done.
So basically, you know when you see screen tearing lines and enabling vsync helps but there's still some there? Well, maybe this solution is for you! However, you will need a decent GPU, enough to pump fps stably above your monitor's refresh rate.
RTSS (Rivatuner Statistics Server) recently (last year lol), added a new feature called "scanline sync". What this does is it caps fps to your monitor refresh rate, precisely (or very, very close at least). But why do you need this? Why not just set fps cap to 120 for a 120hz monitor? That's because when they say your monitor is 120hz, it isn't actually 120hz exactly, it's probably something like 119.5hz or 120.9hz, and this changes whenever you reboot your computer or monitor, or switch from fullscreen to windowed. For some monitors you can check this by going onto your monitor OSD settings.
So basically, once you've installed RTSS, there's a global section for all applications, and you can also add individual applications. Anyway, click on Global and leave the framerate limit at 0, but change the scanline sync to -500 if you're on a 1080p 120hz display. I'm not sure how different the value should be if you're on a different resolution or even refresh rate, but try -500 as a base. If you click on scanline sync itself, you'll see it changing to stuff like x2, and x/2. Basically, x2 means double your refresh rate, and x/2 means half your refresh rate. Keep it at just "scanline sync" for now.
If you have a good enough GPU to keep your fps stable and above refresh rate, then it should get rid of most if not all tearing at this point, in addition to getting rid of general micro stutters. To help get rid of tearing even more, go into your nvidia control panel and enable "vsync - fast" option globally (or for an individual application), this won't introduce any lag time but will reduce tearing lines some more. AMD has a similar vsync fast option, though I don't know the name of it. At this point it should be basically real smooth.
If you're having trouble keeping it at your default monitor refresh rate, say 120hz, then you can try to use the x/2 option. I'm not too sure how to configure this one, or even if it can be, but setting scanline sync to x/2 (60fps) still gives you a smoother outcome than just capping the fps at 80 even though you have a 120hz monitor, so it still seems to work.
To adjust the scanline sync, you will have to click on Global (or the application you want to adjust it for) and click on setup at the bottom. On the FCAT tab, under the general tab, tick the enable frame color, and set it to 2bars. Before you run the application, make sure the "show on-screen display" at the top is on, and "show own statistics" is on as well over to the right so that it displays all the monitoring stuff. So the way you know whether it works or not is you look at those 2 white bars on the left, if they're both the same shade, and transparent-ish then there should be no tearing and it should give you a smooth outcome, for the corresponding fps at least. But if one of them is solid white, while another is transparent, and they flicker between those states, then you have a problem and should play with the scanline sync values, or even graphics settings as your GPU may not be able to handle it. It seems that no matter what value you set it to, if you set scanline sync to x/2 it always gets flickery, so I'm not really sure how to adjust it with x/2, I think the best way is to set it to normal scanline sync, adjust it so it looks the best, and then just switch it to x/2. Also, make sure you're running the game in windowed mode and disable any fps limiters, I'm not too sure if this method works with fullscreen as I run everything windowed these days.
BONUS:
If you want, you could also try to use this method to get videos to play smoother on your computer too, though you'll probably have to use a different video player, or at least I don't know how to do it with other players.
Download mpv player. Once you get it extracted you should be able to just run it fine, no need to install it. Before you do that though, where the mpv.exe is located, create a folder called "mpv" and inside of that folder create a file called "mpv.conf", this is where configurations for the player will be.
Here is my .conf file configuration:
vo=direct3d video-sync=display-resample blend-subtitles=yes interpolation=yes tscale=linear osd-status-msg=${playback-time/full} / ${duration} (${percent-pos}%)\nframe: ${estimated-frame-number} / ${estimated-frame-count}
The conf above should basically repeat frames, or slightly slow down the video in order to sync up to your monitor's refresh rate (you shouldn't notice this stuff though), and if you have scanline sync setup on RTSS (and probably nvidia's fast sync too), this should get rid of tearing and make videos smoother, at least as smooth as it can get with 24fps...
My conf also does some other stuff, but I actually forgot what else it does, one of them is adjusting the scaling filter, so if you're viewing a 480p on a 1080p monitor at fullscreen it will use a linear scale, which I liked more, another is to use GPU instead of CPU to play the video, etc...
Don't bother to do x/2 with this as it will just make it worse; it shouldn't take too much power to get a 24fps video to sync up to your refresh rate (even at 120hz), if the video was 60fps, then maybe you might have a problem on low-end GPUs.

2020.06.11 13:23 DevinC1200 Desperate to get a life

So I'm 22 and I'm currently sitting at my job in a factory on a fifteen minute break and I need real help. No not like emergency I'm in an immediate life threatening situation kind of help but more existential "midlife" crisis panicking because I feel I'm wasting my life away type of thing. I'm probably going to go on a rant here because I really have a lot to say and nobody really to say it to which I've felt has been the case for many years now, so I'll probably be on my second break from work or maybe even at home by the time I'm done writing this. But anyway, to actually get to the point, I feel like I'm stuck in my life and I'm wasting my valuable time and potential doing nothing at all when I could so easily be spending my time furthering myself, my life, and possibly even humanity in general in some way shape or form. I apologize if any of this sounds arrogant, I promise I'm not but things tend to come across differently over text so bare with me. I have always been a very smart person- I have an IQ two points below super-genius, and I have always had such an easy time learning new things. I have extensive knowledge of math and literature as well as science and history subjects among others, and when it comes to more practical, less scholarly matters, I excel as well. I have good judgement, critical thinking skills, wisdom beyond my young years, problem solving talents, creativity, and much much more to offer. And I'm not just hyping myself up; I can back up any of these things with countless examples- in school I almost never got below a 95 on any test, even subjects I wasnt extremely good with; I've never made a stupid thoughtless mistake like gotten a tattoo I regretted, or driven drunk, or done hard drugs, or made friends with the wrong people; I can recite facts and answer trivia about countless subjects, and I've been known to draw and write some very compelling material from time to time. Hell, my personality isnt even so bad- back when I used to have friends I would make people roll on the floor- literally- from laughing so hard. And I'm not super out of shape or disabled or anything crazy like that. My only real limitations in fact (or at least the biggest), are an overwhelming lethargy and lack of motivation which may stem from an undiagnosed case of mild depression. Despite the fact that I could ace any test a teacher could throw at me, I never got good grades in school. I knew the material and learned what I needed to and more, but I just couldn't bring myself to complete assignments. All the way up until high school I would procrastinate, turn in late, and often miss entirely big projects, almost all homework, and especially long essays. It never helped that in elementary school i got into trouble for causing disturbances in class (I guess to get attention) and in middle school I had to deal with hostile peers because my school was a bit ghetto and I was a bit "strange" to a lot of the other kids. I was held back in 8th grade despite achieving extremely high scores on my sats and fcats (big end of year tests for those not familiar) every time I took them. High school was a bit better, and I made friends and tried a little more in school, but I still didnt excel. I ended up going to summer school and failed many classes including History which I had to repeat three times and still didnt bother to get good grades in. Oh and I failed to mention that despite my general likeability (I made friends easy enough) I never had long term companions, inside or out of school, because I ended up moving three or four times, and went to two each of elementary, middle, and high schools. And I have 5 older siblings various members of whom have shared a home with me throughout my life, yet I often felt like an only child because my next oldest brother was 6 years ahead of me, and he hated my guts. I tended to avoid the rest of my family for similar reasons, and my single mother was almost never around because she was a nurse and worked all hours of the day and night to take care of us. Overall i was a pretty lonely kid, even up until high school when I made real friends that I actually hung out with outside of school for once. This was pretty much fine with me (I think?) Because I was used to keeping to myself anyway. I passed time reading books, playing games and with toys when i was a kid, collecting things I thought were cool, keeping my room organized, and creating things from my imagination, like a card game I invented in middle school much like the battling card games yu-gi-oh or magic the gathering (which I now play a lot of, incidentally). I guess my point here is not to elicit sympathy or anything for my seemingly shitty upbringing- actually I know a lot of people who have had it much worse- but instead I guess I'm just looking for a new perspective, and maybe I'm tired of trying to face all my issues alone. My real purpose in writing this is, well, to get advice. And to ask for help. Because right now I cant afford to go back to college. Much like grade school, I failed to complete more than 3 semesters of community college for the same reasons- I simply could not do the work for the life of me. And in college it gets hard- you have to really study, and write multi page papers. They wanted me to read an entire book in a few months or something- and I couldn't do it. Obviously I regret it now, and I'm starting to grow out of that depression or laziness or whatever you want to call it; in fact I'm practically losing my mind while I anxiously await an opportunity to actually DO something meaningful that will help secure my future. Of course I should have listened and done my work and be diligent but I feel like I was a different person back then. And now I'm suffering from someone else's mistakes. They're mine of course, I just dont think I would have done what I did knowing how desperate I would be to be on the right track and in a good place right now.
So the TLDR of this post is something like: hey, I'm a lost but smart guy/kid (I dont even know what to call myself at this age) with a lot of potential in a lot of different areas, and I am in desperate need of a good opportunity to advance my life in a positive direction. If you have an idea of something like a website I can look at, or someone I can talk to, or maybe if you or someone you know is willing to try me out at doing some creative or intelligent work or really anything less miserable than working in a factory pushing plastic pieces of medical syringes into boxes for 8 hours, or even if you just have some sound advice, please PLEASE just comment it for me to read. I will take almost anything I can get that has any kind of potential. Also I dont post much so I'm sorry if this was hard to read. I dont expect many people to read all of it. Thank you anyway.

2020.06.08 10:01 adamcboyd SEEKING: hard-number info on GPU VR perfomace currently

I have an odd situation. I'm looking to build a system that the main hardware being the CPU, motherboard, memory, etc are all going to have a three to five year lifespan but the graphics card needs to only make it till the end of this year when the 30 XX lines come out from Nvidia. so I'm trying to find actual numbers, whether it uses FCAT data, or just some dude taking video of it actually showing the difference, on what video card is the most bang for the buck right now knowing that I'm going to stop using it in about 9 months or so. Since this is for a business issue, just sitting out and waiting is not an option and I do have to buy something. It also has to be able to play all popular titles at a reasonable rate.
I was settled on a 3600, or a 3300x until I saw the 10700k kind of take the new title as current best CPU. I'll build some z 490 board and some match tram with it.
I really just want these hard numbers and I'm trying to find them. My logic-based brain is trying to see the A/b comparison and trying to figure out what I can do to get by with the least amount of money spent but still getting the maximum amount of performance. As a side note I have to build 10 of these machines. So the timing sucks and I totally understand. I absolutely agree and in a perfect world I would do this completely differently. But I don't have an option and putting in a 1660 or like an RX 580 just isn't an option. Eileen towards Nvidia because of all of the texture compression stuff they do on there and as well as DLSS which I firmly believe will completely assist in VR titles going forward.
And while the 5700xt seems to be a good card, I don't see it benefiting from the stuff and videos doing for VR specifically and don't want to go down that line if I don't have to. I do know that they're cheaper and that's the trade off. so any information you have would be great. I've been looking everywhere for this and every ad I find or every copy on a website is either recycled and they change the date to be more current but they're talking about 900 series cards, or they're giving completely different benchmarks for completely different things and I'm really trying to find specifically VR tested and proven graphics. I have a range of headsets from the original Vive with TP cast, a 5 Pro, an HP reverb, of Lenovo, 2 daydreams, the gear VR prototype, PlayStation VR, 2 Quests, and a Valve Index. so I'm pretty familiar with the hardware. However my 2080 TI at the house is not nearly a fair comparison of what these rigs need to be and I'm trying to keep the build cost under $1,000 not including the headset.
I deeply appreciate any help and any constructive comments. I will go to any website you suggest and watch any video you suggest. I will answer any questions and I will eagerly await any helpful replies.
Thank you for being a solid community and I have always enjoyed this subreddit so I do appreciate being able to chime in and call upon everybody's collective knowledge to help me accomplish my goal. I really tried to do it alone but it's quite difficult from my point for some reason.
Thanks again!

2020.02.22 06:33 kallulah So did you ever cheat?

I didn't know I had dyscalculia in high school. Aside from copying a friend's homework here and there, I'd never done any blatant cheating until FCATS (a Florida state test that's issued in 5th, 8th, and 10th grade) they had a similar scoring system like the SATs and the math section was brutal. If I didn't pass the fcat I wouldn't be able to proceed to 11th grade. I came across a 5 point question and I asked one of the honor kids. I begged her the second the moderator stepped out of the room. She hooked me up with the answer on her calculator and all I had to do was "show the work." she'll always be one of my heros. Granted, I continued to fall through the cracks... but no one would have figured out then that I had a learning disability and I would have been held back for no good reason.

2020.01.17 16:07 Fickle-Ground13 Is capitalism fair 2. Stupid geniuses in my family? I'm One of them?

I agree with you. 95%.
But, at the same time. I would like to hear some peoples point of views, on particular issues that had me struggling mentally for a while.
At age 16... I was in high school and I was not the best in math class. My family moved to the USA from Colombia not speaking english. When I was age 12. I was enrolled to Nautilus Middle School in Miami. I was made to retake 8th grade. Even though, I was supposed to start 9th grade... That was ok. It was not that big of a deal. I learned a lot, I been naturally a good student... Capable of learning things fast, with strengths on some areas, like everyone. I developed my english skills quickly.
During that year, I meet great friends that also transferred to Miami Beach Senior High. Some of them... I still keep in touch with fifteen years latter. I completed, 2 grades in high school in Miami. Until my mother decided that she wanted to try and get a house in a small town in Central Florida... Away from my dad's side of the family. My father had to stay in South Florida due to work, he traveled once or twice a month since then.
The relationship between my parents until this day, has not... Been the most stable in many aspects. Since, I have recollection of time. But they still manage to work their differences as a couple, and not call quits on their matrimony officially. But, I'm not certain, how they call each most of the time. Seems to me... that more than... husband and wife; The easier way to describe their marriage at this point. Could be distant friends if that makes any sense to you... I couldn't deny or confirm that they... Love each other with deep passion. Because that's not what they say or display in their relation. I have no doubts there is some form of love considering they being togher for more or less than 35 years since they meet.
For me it was particularly hard. to leave the city, we had just recently moved into. And my new found friends that time around. To reseattle once again; Away from my dad's side of the family. To a small farm town, where basically I Felt that ... I did not fit, It was a huge culture shock.
The idea of moving to "LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS" the United States of America. was very exiting. Being young and knowing that many family members live there, was a great inspiration for me. To see them in person again and being able to share with my cousins & uncles. That was one of the things that made the transition pleasant and something to look for.
Also knowing that it was a "better country and a greater future for all the family" was a huge motivation for us. We had waited the imigratio process for a decade; Since my Uncle Julio in the US... had started the process of putting his great personal efforts to to be a brilliant mind avobe average in the world to do an accomplis a million things. Before being "able" to file an application to petition for his relatives... outside of the US... Now moving away from my new found friends from Miami to another town in the middle of Central Florida. Was very different. I hated the fact that I had to relocate with my family. I cried as a young teenager during the first year of moving many time because, I hated it in the fact that I had to find new friends, but that time. The culture shock was was a lot stronger. I was mostly a loner and by 11 grade I was in regular english classes with the exception of Spanish as an elective and it was advance spanish.. math on the other hand I would go to the class take the first 10 minutes of notes and sleep for the next 40 minutes... I had no study partners and they would do group work.. etc. Next I failed algebra 2 if I'm not wrong. But I re took it next semester and on that class I manage to make a group of people I would work with. And the teachers was alot more lenient etc. In Florida at that time in order to Gradute HS. You had to pass 2 exams called FCAT. Surprisingly I took the math fcat and I passed it the first try. I know I sat down and worked out the problems logically and what not but I did not think I was going to pass it. And my idea was. I would pass the reading and writing first try and take math again.. but it was the opposite. So 12 grade came by and I was ready to graduate with the 2 exams. I did not have all that much support in my family when it came to study due to my mom always acting like she was too busy with work and not speaking much english back then so. She "knew" I was smart and I could just do most of the work on my own and pass my classes and graduate. Thing that I did. Also during that time my two younger brother where also in school and I would try to help them by leading as an example. During 12 my mother was also more interested in me having a job after school until midnight cleaning some offices and getting back up at 5:30 to be at school by 6.. so it was many things going on. With my younger brother also wanting to be in a gang and develop that tough life mentality..
Any ways one day, I was already done with the FCAT so the next step was to take the SAT so I could see how I would get involve in college. The idea was that I liked to be a chef, but my father from the distance, i would see it 2 times a month for 2 days each time.. he discourage me and told me that i would be a cook all my life and that was not going to be beneficial for my future. So, during school, I had two main subjects I was really interested in. Arts, I had been taking arts since middle schools for my electives, to 12, drawing , sculpting, 2 photoshop semesters and 1 illustrator semester, and the other subject history. I was really good at geography and history in general, I was the kind of young kid back in 2004 playing call of duty ww2 not only for the trill but also because of the historical value, something I also transferred to my brothers, they would be interested in playing Rome and flight simulator on the PC that I, we asked our family to help us build it.. so we can have the "technology" to do school work and have for "gaming"

2019.07.27 17:41 Parodia17 Finding events

I got a 1 year old border collie mix a couple of months ago (he's about 1.5 now), and we've been training hard in fundamentals so that we can compete at the very least in agility eventually. I love going and watching events for a few hours each weekend, and I was hoping you fine folks could point me towards organizations to check schedules for.
My primary interest is agility, but I would like to work him in rally and/or obedience. I also want to visit herding trials. I don't plan to herd with him, but when I'm ready to get a puppy (mannnnny years from now), I'll probably get a working line border collie from a breeder. I would love to eventually dip our toes into other sports, though, just for fun. Even if I choose to never compete outside of agility and obedience, I love seeing what all people train their dogs for. I especially enjoy seeing dogs do what they were originally bred for.
I know about the AKC event calendar, and I've marked down some agility, obedience, rally, scentwork, and FCAT events. I've also checked out CPE and NADAC for agility and I plan to go to a herding trial tomorrow by USBCHA. Typically I go for a few hours in the morning and then come back home. (I leave the dogs at home, and the BC in particular turns into a bit of a handful for my husband after 4-5 hours. I'm still working on his off switch.) What are some other sports/events/organizations that I should look at?
My goal with going to these are equal parts for my own entertainment, learning about different ways to train and different skills dogs can learn, and (in the case of agility and obedience) getting to know people so that when we trial for the first time it's less overwhelming for me.
I live in the Durham/Chapel Hill NC area, FWIW. I don't really want to drive more than an hour or so each way, though I'm willing to go further for sports that I'd otherwise not get to see.
