2024.05.19 11:18 PowerMinute1922 The Man who screams at Daybreak

My last flat was unbearable.
I mean, you try having a family of 11 live above you, when half of them are under the age of 8. Also try having a pair of raging alcoholic neighbours on either side of you. A pair who were once married to each other. My eyes rivalled that of pigeons’ due to no sleep.
I lasted a total of 21 days. I know, new record huh? I just about shoved the keys back in the grubby hands of my landlord when I finally saw the lunacy inscribed on his face. No wonder the rent was dirt cheap.
So I was back on the road, not on the streets though. Luckily enough I started questioning the flat by day 8, looked around for another place by day 15, and made a decision to get the hell out on day 18. 3 days of packing and it was bye-bye.
My new place seemed all the better too: yes, the rent was more expensive, and yes, it only has 2 bedrooms. But at least it was a house, one where pesky neighbours were at least 5 metres away. On my right, at least. On my left? Their house - thankfully - couldn’t even be seen where I stood.
Parking my car, I skipped up towards my new house with my fresh set of keys. And on entering? Silence. Perfect still silence. Thank the Lord. I basked in it for a while before returning to my car, unloading some of my baggage. It took 3-4 hauls, but I managed to fit it into one of the bedrooms. Thankfully, the rest of my things were to be brought by moving vans in about an hour.
I envisioned what the house could look like with a few finishing touches.
“But first…”
I eyed the 2 rooms. “Mine!”
The room I had chosen to be mine gave a bright view of my own smaller garden, as well as a portion of my right neighbour’s house, but that didn’t matter much. The view in the other room would suck: just my car and some reeds.
I was just about done heaving some of my baggage into my newly-chosen room when the doorbell gave an obnoxious ring. I stood, fighting the urge to just run away into one of my rooms when it beeped again.
Reaching the door, I eyed out of the peephole to see nothing but an opaque whiteness. I guess the downside in this house is that the last tenant was a slob. I eyed some of the yellowing walls. Sighing, I opened the door.
“Hello! We’re your neighbours, Jack and Sally, and we live just there,” She motioned towards my right, “We came to introduce ourselves, and to let you know that if you ever need anything, we’re right here.”
She then shoved a basket full of biscuits at my chest, a motherly-smile stretched around her lips. She turned to leave, husband - clearly forced to follow her - in tow, when she turned around.
“Your name, dear?”
“Leen!” I shouted after her.
“Perfect.”
And perfect it was, I thought. Neighbours that respect their distance from you, and give you food? I eyed the delicious snacks in front of me. Definitely an upgrade.
Though it was at dawn the very next day that I woke up, shook.
~
See, I was just sleeping in my newly delivered bed when I heard it. Something that sounded like a bird, a huge caw, before it alternated into different pitches. Disoriented, I tried to wipe the sleep from my eyes in order to focus better. But it just made me more confused.
It sounded like a chicken.
As far as I know, this new place was not the countryside, nor farmland. So what? And why?
I stepped up to my window to take a good look outside. I wouldn’t keep a rooster in my home that’s for sure. Whatever it was, it was coming from…
My jaw dropped.
I closed my eyes and scrubbed at them harshly.
Please tell me why I opened my eyes and saw the exact same thing.
A man, on his haunches, face pointed towards the sky, was making rooster noises.
And he was on my neighbours’ garden. The ones I met earlier.
He looked absolutely demented. I wasn’t even scared then, just flabbergasted. I wasted no time calling the police at this disturbing nuisance.
When they arrived though, I saw my neighbours’ shoot straight from their house, speaking or…was it pleading? With the officers. What on Earth..?
Anyway, it was their problem now, so I went back to bed. I had a whole bunch of chores the next day, and had to get it all sorted before I returned to work.
Shutting my eyes, I wished for peace. And quiet, thank you very much.
~
At last, I woke up at 10 AM. By 1 PM, I had sorted my clothing into its respective drawers, and had decorated my bedroom walls, including a new golden addition. And now? I had food cooking on the stove. It felt satisfying, having cleaned up and now awaiting the prize of food.
I scrolled on my phone as I waited for the pasta to cook, before another ding turned my attention towards the door.
“Huh, what now?”
Unfortunately I hadn’t cleaned the peephole yet, so I had to open the door. There stood Jack and Sally. Or Sally and Jack. Jack looked lost. Sally stared deep into my eyes.
“Was it you?”
“Me? What do you mean?”
“That called the police last night?”
I recalled the past night, and gave her a thumbs up, hoping my smile was reassuring. “Yep, don’t worry, that lunatic will not be coming back ever again. He can go to the zoo if he wants to squawk.”
I should’ve taken the cue from Jack’s paling face, but Sally grabbed hold of me. “Listen here, okay? That man, the one you called the police on...” She trembled, “He’s my son! You can’t do that! He was not even on your property!”
My eyes widened. “He’s…your son?”
“Of course! How can you not see that?”
Nodding at her, I relinquished myself from the hold she had on my arms. “Okay then, sorry for the call. But I do have to mention something,” Jack started to shake his head behind his wife, but I ignored the little-to-say man, “Is there any way you can keep the noise down to a minimum? Honestly, your son has vocal cords of steel! It would wake the entire neighbourhood at this rate.”
Sally stared pointedly at me, then took a look around my house. “Very well.”
She grabbed her husband’s arm as she turned to leave, and I caught the slightest look of fear in his eyes before he was abruptly pulled away.
I dismissed it - and the sinking feeling - on discovering my very soft, overcooked pasta when I came back into my home though.
I managed to also do one thing before wrapping up: I cleaned out my door's peephole. Now I wouldn't have to open the door to know it's them. I'd just speak at them from the inside if they were to come back.
~
I woke, jolting out of my bed the very next morning, or night. I checked my bedside clock to see it was 3:50 AM. The cock-a-doodle-doo was breaking into my head. I grasped my hair in frustration, knowing that I didn’t have the madman’s parents phone numbers’ to call, or maybe scream at them. It was the exact same thing as the day before! Except…maybe…
I strained my ear.
It sounded a lot closer.
My hands, for some reason, became clammy instantly, and the urgent thumping of my own heart - the fragility of my own life - became all the more prominent.
I tiptoed to my window and peeked outside. Nothing.
I then slowly treaded to my spare bedroom, and pulled the curtains apart. Zilch. Nada. Though…
Almost as if under a spell, my head turned towards my main door. I…I could somehow feel it. Just to confirm though, I peeked out of the door-hole.
And with a slam, I collapsed in my new, dream home.
~
When I came to, I was lying on white sheets, and a bright white light hung over me.
A hospital.
I was in my own room, which I found odd. It was not like I needed it. But then a doctor walked in, followed by 3 other people, and it all made sense. Everything - blurs and sureness - melted into a perfect picture.
Sally, Jack, and their son.
He couldn’t be more than 17 really. Though he looked 37 a few hours ago. Face pressed against the glass of my peephole, mouth wide open towards it, eyes pointing in different directions as his face reddened and contorted.
I was deaf in one moment. Then came the COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO.
Of course I fainted. Who could blame me?
“Good afternoon, I’m Dr Lam. You’re in A&E right now. Are you able to tell me your full name and date of birth?
My voice answered the Doctor’s questions, but my eyes stared dazed at the youngster’s abdomen, not daring to reach his its eyes.
“Well, nothing seems to be wrong with you. You may have just been dehydrated. Did you have any headache or pain before you fainted?”
I replied in the negative.
“Luckily, your friends’ son had found you passed out, and ensured your speedy arrival to hospital, so I wouldn’t be worried about any damage.”
My eyes finally strayed, looking towards the ground. I held the nauseousness of bile down my throat. Following a brief check-up, I was allowed to leave.
And 2 people and a demon followed me out.
“Well, Leen, that should give you a lesson,”
Sally.
I turned towards the family, who stood in a 3 person arc. Only 1 managed to look away, equal parts shame and guilt. I don’t need to mention who that was.
“Don’t worry. You can look at me, I don’t bite: not now and not at dawn,” a strained voice whispered at me. “I promise, it’s only at dawn when I…when I…”
“Hush Dean, don’t work your voice that much. You’ll need to save it for later.”
I was still dizzy. That didn’t stop me from running half-hobbled to the taxi stand, where I begged and claimed to many that I would provide double payment if they were to take me to my house.
It took a while, but I managed to pack some of my clothes. There was no way in hell I was sleeping at that damned house again, not now, not ever. I called and booked at a nearby hotel in the meantime.
I was done packing necessities by the evening. Walking out of my house, I saw no sign of those three. I would have been relieved, had I not come face to face with than one thing: standing in my garden, leaning against my car. My breathing picked up instantly.
Dean
It stood with its back resting against my car. And It noticed me immediately. Seems like it was just waiting for me to notice it.
“Are you leaving?” It sounded almost sad, but I needed it to move away, or my only way out of there would be in jeopardy.
“For the night.” My answer? Almost smooth, but even I could hear the first shake in my voice.
It nodded though. “Okay.” And he moved from my car. I counted the distance. 1 metre. 2. 2.5-
It made a sudden dash at me as I - in flight response - ran frantically to the driver’s seat, locking the door. I came in half-squashed, my backpack still on my back. But I didn’t care.
Its face was pressed against the window.
“Mum is waiting for a person that will like me for me, not run away. You’re supposed to like me.” It said, matter-of-factly. It then wailed, and sunk beneath the car window.
I did not dare to sit up and see what it was doing.
I didn’t even need to though. The sound came a split-second later.
COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO
Tears spilled from my eyes. My limbs felt weak. I couldn’t even breathe. It suddenly sprang up to the window. Eyes enlarged: looking at me and everywhere at once.
“I can actually tur-COCK- in the day too, but M-DOODLE- said it would be too much for you,” wheezing, it exclaimed again before adding, “but this is ME. Do you-do you, do you like me?”
With dead limbs I weighed my foot on the pedal, and jump-started the car to speed off. My head shook left-and-right in response, stomach heaving with nausea.
Human preservation kicked me into taking proper control of the car when I saw, out of the rear view mirror, Sally. This time with a rope, which locked around the creature’s neck before she tugged, drawing it into her house. At one point we locked eyes. And what do I mean by we?
Answer: the 2 of them and me.
It was honestly a miracle that I did not get into a road traffic accident.
I spent 3 days living in the hotel after that, my job long-forgotten in the aftermath.
By day 4 I broke down and called my older sister, asking to stay at her place for a while. Her house and area seemed fine the times I’d stopped over. I guess I clearly did not seem right though, as she many-a-time asked me what was wrong. My answer? Stress. She persisted, years of living together as kids helping her figure out my lies, though she ultimately gave up after a week. She knew it was something I didn’t want to share, and that I was safe now. That was enough for her.
For me? I guess at the time I so badly wanted to tell someone. Though it couldn’t be my sister. I didn’t want to cause any trouble. Nor see if she’d even believe me, or instead rank me at the same IQ level as her two 5-year-olds.
For a few weeks, I stayed with my sister and her family, reassuring both her and myself that I was fine. Thankfully, we worked together to find a small apartment. Next to a kids school too - bonus points. I now craved safety above all else. After moving out though, I realised I needed my belongings back.
So, who picked up my stuff from that cursed residence, you ask? The moving people. I called the police from a random phone booth first to head over to that area, emphasising on seeing some suspicious looking men, whilst I got them to collect everything. I did not dare to call the police on that family though. I would prefer if the link between me and them got cut, drawn and quartered.
So now I’m here, in an apartment which thankfully hasn’t shown any sign of insanity. Inspecting my belongings, I noticed that there was one thing missing.
My gold frame, used to encase my make-shift certificate - made by yours truly after her 21-day record from the previous apartment - was gone.
I felt somewhat miffed, but then I realised something.
Something which can maybe bring the light out in this whole situation.
I counted carefully. I broke my record.
With a grand stay of 2 days. Now that - that I don’t think I’d ever be able to beat.

2024.05.19 11:14 Hopeful-Cake4759 In a LDR but might be falling for local guy. Help!

I (30f) am in a LDR with my bf (30m) but might have fallen for local guy (34m). What to do in this case?
So me (30f) and my bf (30m) have been together for almost 3 years. We’ve been visiting each other 3-4 times per year and then spending a generous amount of time together. We’ve been on vacations together and are overall really happy. We chat and videochat daily. He’s very sweet and affectionate, he’s quite charming and good looking. English is not my first language but it is his, however even if I can speak English fairly well, he makes an effort to learn my language.
He plans to move to my country to be together, but in the past 1.5 years, little to no effort has been put into that thought by him. That discourages me a little. Also, he has been unemployed for years as he has been battling mental health problems. He does have a very small business going on but once he moves out of his country, that would be over. In our relationship, I would be the sole breadwinner, and even if I love him and am ready to do so, I am a bit afraid that I would grow resenting him at some point. The future scares me a bit, as I myself have been burned out at some point.
Now to my problem. A few weeks ago I met this guy, he’s from my town. He’s older, has an apartment, a really good job, works out, is very responsible and is interested in me. I went out with him twice, as friends. He’s funny, sweet, really smart, he’s also quite good looking but maybe less than my bf. We have a lot in common, and I enjoy his company. I find myself sometimes thinking that a relationship with him would actually be a better fit for me.
What should I do? I feel shitty to do this to my bf, but I also feel stressed because he doesn’t actively take steps to move here. Thinking about a future with him stresses me out because he cant provide for us.
Help?

2024.05.19 11:00 outdoors_nature3986 Dissapointed abput my career

I was always ambitius but the company I've worked for 10 years told me despite the fact my results were great, I am not management material because I am too frendly. I finally left this company due to so much gaslighting and mobbing I just could not take it anymore -it was horrible. Unfortunately despite the fact I was interviewing for months I only received one offer. I took it only because I really wanted to get out of that toxic place. Money is not as good, commute is a lot worse than I thought (should be 40 minutes one way but with traffic it's twice as much), but I thought I'll give it a proper go. I think I came in already pis*ed of how my previous company treated me, so I got demotivated very fast... only after a couple of days of being there I was told to be slow (it's a new programme and new area for me, same field but a completely different part of it) however I actually felt like I was doing great considering, so I was schocked. I then also heard from other people that my manager has been saying this about me around the office. But this was on my second or third day of training and I felt like I was catching up quickly already doing some stuff on my own, if she had a question about a customer when she came in in the morning I already had an answer prepared etc so I found it bizzare.
Because I am much more experienced than my manager (she is very young) I have a lot more knowledge of seing the whole picture, so I gave her some ideas on what should be done, what this company is missing to improve sales, and learnt the next days she introduced the ideas to her supervisor but as her own. Two weeks' gone by and I already feel like I just want to leave.
I am too sensitive? I've been told this so many times by my previous manager when I told him I won't tollerate to be shouted at, that I am to sensitive, taking it too personal...that I am now actualy doubting any though I have about work.
I got so angry with this situation that I applied for other jobs and suprisingly very quickly I got 3 interviews lined up next week all much closer to home so less commute and with wfh possibilites. However I am now afraid they are all just as*holes. How do I get my motivation back?

2024.05.19 10:59 exsapphi New Zealand needs to be looking towards a green future for our own economic viability (as told through the history of glass)

The thing about this climate crisis that no one talks about is that economically, this is not new. This is the same sort of shift as any other massive economic shift we've seen in history, whether resulting from technology or environment or society or any combination of the three. It will be rapid; as rapid as the economic expansion of Europe when it discovered just how profitable colonisation and slavery were. But it's not really anything unseen in an economic sense.
How markets work is this: everything is just supply and demand. If there is a known demand for something, in a roundabout way, the market will ensure that demand is supplied. It might melt a few glaciers in the meantime, or be delayed by a war or two, but it's a force akin to that of nature, or evolution, or cause and effect. The markets will balance. Eventually.

A detour through history

The Chinese never developed eye-glasses. They didn't have the need for glass, because their drink of choice was tea, so the materials they worked with were mostly ceramics. In Europe, the cultural drink of refinement was wine. This didn't need to be kept hot, or be brewed and poured perfectly and all that stuff I'm told is important with tea. But it had requirements and qualities of its own, and one of them is that it looks pretty on display -- and that's why Europe developed and refined glass so much faster than China.
Glass is an incredibly old invention. It's fragile, much more fragile than pottery, so we rarely find it in archeological digs. But it's been invented in and/or expanded to many many cultures throughout history since at least 2000 BC in Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Syria, followed by the Greeks, the Romans, the Canaan, and the Persians. Basically anyone with an empire, including the Chinese, was making glass. Unfortunately they'd only just discovered transparent glass by the late Bronze Age, when the Bronze Age collapsed due to a series of environmental, migratory and urban changes.
(A good reminder that historically, periods of mass technological advancement are followed by civilisation collapses and dark ages. Until the present, of course. But that's been true of every present.)
A lot of glass-making technology was lost, but some important things were saved and some new stuff was rediscovered, and most of this discovering happened in Europe because they had, as I mentioned, wine. And rich people wanted to show off their pretty, colourful wine, and that only worked if your glass was transparent. And Italy had access to pure silica quartz, plus soda ash via their trade with the Levant, and so some clever spark there developed the first pair of eyeglasses.
And that's how you have Mecca, Italy and Venice (the latter of whom had been producing the famous Venetian glass, but moved all their glassmakers to Italy because they'd built all their buildings out of wood) all mass producing eye-glasses with consistent standards for Europe and the Middle East by the 14th century.
This might seem like a small development, but gradual loss of sight used to be a disability. Like, it seriously disabled people from doing many things. Far-sightedness meant artisans couldn't create and scholars couldn't read -- I can't even imagine how many people died falling off a horse just because they were short-sighted. For civilisations to have access to devices that got them decade of productivity out of some of the most skilled people in their societies was massive. And that's part of how you get European dominance over Asia, because the Chinese economic powerhouses didn't care about glass as much as Europe did. It's not enough to just invent something. To develop a technology, a society needs both the resources to play with and the need to play with it. That's why we get so much advancement from war. You can thank Germany for your microwave.

How on earth is this relevant to the market or our climate crisis?

Glass will be invented, and then it will be forgotten, and then it will be invented again. But only some economies flourished from it.
We have no control over anything but us. And that's terrifying. The climate change that crippled the Bronze Age wasn't even their fault and they still got thrown back to the Dark Ages.
We are going to see our own change in the market. We are going to live it. And one thing is true, whether National or ACT or BP like it or not: fossil fuels cannot continue to be relied upon as a commodity. Not long-term. It's a dying industry, slowly but surely, and it'll die whether we manage to wean ourselves off petrol or whether we use it all up first.
To a lesser extent, this is true of other non-renewables too. We are not at critical mass yet with our lithium-ion batteries, but we're now at the stage where people in the third world all seem to have cellphones. This is not a sustainable practice for a limited metal we have to mine from the earth. When something is running out, we don't have to stop using that material in the things we build; if we start to use it all up, it will soon get too expensive to build with, and that will stop us.
And that's why we have to stop using it: because if you as a country or industry pour all your energy and resources into developing technology based off that now-scarce resource, you will be left with no usable technology when that resource runs out.

What are National doing?

This is a political sub, so I won't mince words: something's gone wrong with National. Something's always been wrong with ACT, but National's change is recent. Power has been centralised in the board and the candidate selection process is no longer in the hands of the rank and file after Steven Joyce's shakeup, instead dominated by corporate interests. And they have dominated. We have a cabinet of lobbyists, and not just on National's side of the board; Luxon has pulled together the whole industry.
When we attribute "intentions" to things like forces and political parties, it can be easy to forget there's not a concerted, rational mind at play behind their decisions, and their actions are influenced by all of the people and factors and forces that make them up. When I say, "National has been bought by lobbyists", I don't mean every single person in the party is corporate shill. I just mean that there is enough corporate, business, and big-money influence in the party that they are no longer being governed primarily by their voter base or even their party members.
Nothing makes this more obvious than National's direction in politics. When your LABOUR and GREEN parties are the ones proposing to fix your climate crisis via free-market ingenuity that we can patent, sell on and capitalise off, something has gone wrong. There is money to be made in climate change, and National are off chasing oil down the bottom of a well.
If we don't wean ourselves off fossil fuels, we will find ourselves paying for it the increased price for them when we don't have the green technology to utilise at the end of supply. If we don't put our minds to green tech and science, we won't have the environment-saving and cleaning and reinforcing products and knowledge to sell on when the demand for them peaks through the ceiling -- instead we will be buying from other countries at big prices, paying to ship their experts here to tell us how to manage our estuaries or dump sites or skink habitats or whatever it is we need to fix next. New Zealand got lucky with our green energy; we were already using renewables by sheer coincidence when the climate crisis struck, and it made our transition to this new world very smooth. We will not be that lucky again.
Look at what we produce as a country. We held on far too long to our wool market out of some idea that it was "what we were supposed to be doing", and it nearly wrecked the country. Because it took us so long to change, and because we'd converted all our land into pasture, the most effective market for us to turn to became beef. Now that market is thriving, and we are willfully ignoring the real economic costs that will come with being a beef export country, and that cost is methane. There is not a future where countries will be allowed to emit methane for free. And there are no methane-light cows to switch to. Not until we develop them.
And this is what people talk about when they talk about environmental solutions still to be developed -- as if other people are going to develop them. That is incorrect. WE are the Cow Country. WE are the ones that should be foremost of the cow-fart field. If we do, we will be the ones benefitting by selling our bio-engineered cows and our science that made it happen. But if we don't, if we trail behind, we let other countries get out in front, and then our industry relies on them, and their industry outgrows us.
And these are all individual product or problem examples, but we are dragging our feet across the entire green industry. Why?

Big Oil does not care if your tech is Green

I say big oil, but there are other anti-environment and pro-corporate interests at play here. And again, there's not some big puppetmaster moving his pawn pieces, but there is influence, and companies don't want the world to go green, because when they do, they stop getting money for all the things they're getting money from right now. They don't care about the environment because they don't have the capacity to care; they are not a they. They are a force, a conglomeration, a hivemind of workers breaking their back for the company, until they clock off and become their own person again.
Their only interest is keeping ahold of their incredibly profitable market, and that market needs machines that use oil, and consumers willing to buy those machines, and people who aren't thinking about switching to a non-oil version of their tractor that doesn't exist yet (because no one has found the need to invent it. Or had the right resources.)
Oil cares about oil. Mining cares about mining. Tobacco cares about tobacco. Beef cares about beef. And we get value out of these industries as a country, as a society, so when they say"This thing is bad for me", we do have to listen to that. Otherwise we won't get our beef, or our oil. But "This thing is bad for ME" isn't the same as "This thing is bad for YOU". And companies are relying on consumers to not know the difference.

Back to National

Tobacco lobbyists have bought out Parliament, and are literally drafting our tobacco laws. And they are just one interest around the table. But they have had a huge effect. Imagine what's happening to the interests of your politicians when you have your lobbyists working together. Imagine where the interests of lobbyists for mining and oil might meet. Now imagine fisheries has a guy in there too.
Our oceans should be feeling very nervous right now.
It's the small influences we can't see that make these big decisions later on. The people who select our future MPs. The people who decide, hey, I'm going to try this new glass technique. But it takes an awful lot of decisions to make a glassblowing society.
A lot of what we do, we don't do consciously, like developing eye-glasses. But the benefit of our open democries, of our information-based societies, of our unprecedented understanding of economies and markets and science and climate, should mean that when we choose to do something consciously, we can do it.
When we don't, something has gone wrong.

A Green Future

To get to the sort of green economy the non-business parties are picturing, you need someone who has the time and acumen to get us there.
That SHOULD be National. There is so much involved in politics; our politicians are running so much. And they're spending most of their time undoing the last guy's policies. Labour's policies sound like the Greens. National doesn't have any except "win". ACT are doing Charter Schools again. And the policies are being made are being made in the interests of business people.
Our politicians don't have visions like Hollyoake of a New Zealand forging our own future, or Muldoon's determination to make things better for the average kiwi, or (heaven help me), Roger Douglass's respect for politics. None of the old guard are happy with how politics is shaping up, and certainly not the right, or who eventually became the right, in Douglass's case -- this is what he had to say on the subject: “John Key lived by the polls and it’s very dangerous. If you want to help people, you have to tell them the truth. The problem is that the politicians of today, they want to help themselves. So they poll in order to know what to say and it’s disgusting.”
I think in that one sentence, Douglass sums up everything wrong with the modern National Party. Once upon a time, National were in it to help people. They're not anymore.

Where to now?

It's all just markets.
If National won't change, they'll kill their market and they'll be replaced by a new party, just like the Liberal Party and Reform Party and Social Credit Party before them. National and Labour have always been around, but not always as these parties, or in these forms. The political spectrum will move to meet demand -- even when curtailed by corporate interests.
Or National will change, take control of their candidates and board, and live to fight for another century or so.
Either way, the economy will continue, and so will climate change. We will still need to develop new technologies using our available resources, and direct our technology-developing towards fixing environmental solutions. I hope New Zealand will benefit from this, and not just witness it. But if it's not National making the push, another political party will. We can see that happening right now, with the other parties suggesting their own green business ideas that National should be sweeping up votes for. There is voter and consumer demand for green businesses, and National are distracting us instead with shiny baubles because the corporations influencing them don't want you to see them.
Another thing Douglass was frustratingly right about: all our parties are doing at the moment is undoing each other's policies. It's hard to see New Zealand making any forwards progress at all if that's our direction.

2024.05.19 10:59 FamousAttitude9796 God’s Firstborn

God’s Firstborn
Oikeoumenē
When He brings his firstborn into the world, it says, "Let all the angels of God worship him."
Hebrews 1:6
In most translations of the Bible, people will read that God brought his firstborn into the "world." Many people are led to think the writer is talking about God the Father bringing the pre-existence Son into the world and into the womb of Mary and then the angels are expected to worship baby Jesus, "Let all the angels of God worship him."
However, the word here is referring to the heavenly economy of God and his angels. The writer tells us explicitly that he has been speaking of the world to come, "For He did not subject to angels the world to come, about which we are speaking" (Hebrews 2:5). The same Greek word is used here as Hebrews 1:6. Hence, Hebrews 1:6 can hardly be a reference to God bringing a pre-existent Jesus into the planet earth and into the womb of Mary. Baby Jesus was not born into the "world to come."
In chapter 1 of the book of Hebrews, two other factors show us what the writer has in mind. In verses 4-5, the writer quotes the second Psalm and God's promise to David at 2 Samuel 7:14. In context, these verses are pertaining to the risen Jesus who had given purification for sins and had become superior to the angels having inherited a better name than them (1:3-4). And like Paul at Acts 13:30-33, the writer applies the second Psalm, "You are my son, Today I have begotten you," to the risen Jesus. In the same way, the promise to David, "I will be a Father to him and he will be a Son to me" is applied to the risen Jesus. The word "firstborn" at Hebrews 1:6 refers to the fact that Jesus is the firstborn out of the dead (Col 1:15,18; Revelation 1:5). The writer is referring to God bringing the firstborn out of the dead into the heavenly economy where He seated Jesus on His throne at His right hand making him superior to the angels, and it is for this reason that the angels are commanded to bow down to him.
...the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, angels and authorities and powers having been subjected to him. 1 Peter 3:22 (see 1 Cor 15:24-28; Eph 1:20-23).
Having made purification of sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on High, having become as much superior to the angels, as he has inherited a more excellent name than them. Hebrews 1:3-4. Angels must bow down to the risen Jesus because he became superior to them when he sat down at the right hand of God. Note also how the writer is profusely contrasting Jesus with the angels in chapter 1. Now look at chapter 12.
But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven. Hebrews 12:22-23. As Paul says, we are seated with Christ in the heavenlies (Ephesians 2:6). Here in the heavenlies is where God the Father is, and where myriads of angels are. At Hebrews 1:6, writer is referring to the fact that the firstborn out of the dead is brought into this heavenly economy, the world to come. The "world" in question is the economy of God and his angels, the "world to come."
Oikoumenē
The Greek word commonly translated as "world" in Hebrews 1:6, is the word oikoumenē. It is derived from the Greek word(s) for house or household. A "household" is the people who live together in a dwelling. The word oikoumenē has been commonly defined as "habitable earth." This definition gives people the notion that an oikoumenē is wherever people are able to reside. However, this is obviously not what the word means as the following passages demonstrate. The word oikoumenē refers to the residents themselves, a population of people, an economy of people. Like the Greek word for "household," the word oikoumenē refers to the people themselves. Including the two occurrences in the book of Hebrews shown above, the following lists every occurrence of this word in the New Testament:
Observe how every single use of the Greek word oikoumenē is referring to a population of people.
The Gospel preached to People
This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole oikoumenē as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come. Matthew 24:14. A Census of the People
Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the oikoumenē. Luke 2:1. A Kingdom of people
And he led him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the oikoumenē in a moment of time. Luke 4:5. Calamities coming upon the People
There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the oikoumenē for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Luke 21:26. A Famine coming upon the People
One of them named Agabus stood up and began to indicate by the Spirit that there would certainly be a great famine upon the whole oikoumenē. Acts 11:28. They have upset/disturbed the People
When they did not find them, they began dragging Jason and some brethren before the city authorities, shouting, "These men who have upset the oikoumenē have come here also." Acts 17:6. God will judge the People
He has fixed a day in which He will judge the oikoumenē in righteousness through a man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.” Acts 17:31 Worshiped by the People
Not only is there danger that this trade of ours fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis be regarded as worthless and that she whom all of Asia and the oikoumenē worship will even be dethroned from her magnificence. Acts 19:27. The Jews among all the People
For we have found this man a real pest and a fellow who stirs up dissension among all the Jews throughout the oikoumenē, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes. Acts 24:5. The Gospel heard by all the People
But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? Indeed they have: "Their voice has gone out into all the earth, and their words to the extents of the oikoumenē.” Romans 10:18 The People who dwell on the earth
Because you have kept the word of my perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, that hour which is about to come upon the whole oikoumenē to test those who dwell on the earth. Revelation 3:10. The Devil deceives People
And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole oikoumenē was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Revelation 12:9. The Kings of the People
They are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the whole oikoumenē, to gather them together for the war of the great day of God Revelation 16:14. Notice how every single time, the word oikoumenē is referring to the people, an economy or population of people.
Sometimes there is an overlap in meaning with the Greek words kosmos and oikoumenē. This occurs when the word kosmos ("world") is used in Scripture to refer to the people of earth. It is used in this manner routinely in the New Testament. When it is used this way, it functions similarly to oikoumenē. Compare Matthew 4:8 and Luke 4:5.
In the case of Hebrews 1:6 and Hebrews 2:5, the word oikoumenē is referring to the economy of all the personages of heaven, God and his angels.

2024.05.19 10:58 Excellent-Escape5313 AITA for not letting my husband take a new job position?

For context: Me (F30) and my husband (M32) got married 8 years ago. After we had our 1st child I was suffering from severe postpartum depression. I was not a pleasant person to be around during this time, but we had yet to really fight, until I happened to see that my husband was messaging & flirting with a woman I did not recognize. I was able to read the convo before he noticed I was looking. I confronted him, he was immediately defensive stating he was talking to one of his friends before storming off. I had never been a paranoid person up until that moment. I dropped the argument, went through his phone a few nights later and found conversations with several women. I took photos and confronted him a couple of days later, and tried to show him that I had proof and found it had been deleted from my phone. This is the first time he had told me I was crazy. The next several years were plagued with arguments and mental breakdowns. At some point I started to believe I was actually crazy. Similar scenarios played out over the next 2 1/2 years. I would have some kind of proof of his indiscretions and it would always be deleted. At some point, he was drunk and admitted to me that he was talking to other women. He to convince me it wasn’t “really” cheating, because it was only online and it was the same thing as watching porn. When this confession was later brought up, I “imagined it” and he had never said that. In the next couple of years I had our 2 child. Around our 5th wedding anniversary, he left his phone unlocked for the first time in 3 years. I saw he was messaging multiple women. I still vividly remember what I saw. I took photos and reached out to several women. He had been talking to one for as long as we were married, and I learned was not just “online fun.” I confronted him and left. We were separated for over a year. I had not filed for divorce, yet. I’m one who believes in fighting for your marriage. I sought out counseling and one day, he cried to me to let him join the counseling. We attended counseling together for multiple months and eventually moved back in together. I remained guarded and paranoid. He’s never truly owned up to what he did. Counseling faded away over time. I’ve always wanted answers, I want to know everything and I want to hear it from the horses mouth. I’ve never gotten that.
To the best of my knowledge, he has stopped talking to other women and has been more attentive and loving. Recently he has been considering taking a position within his company that would require frequent traveling to different locations across the country. This has resulted in arguments. I bring up the past and he responds by telling me that it’s been long enough, and that I need to let go. This has caused a huge rift between us again, and he says that I am in the wrong for trying to control him.
AITA for not letting go of the past and trying to prevent him from taking a traveling position?

2024.05.19 10:54 too_much_Beer Why is Eberl rejecting de Zerbi? Has he lost his goddamn mind?

For clarification, “rejecting“ in this case means that he answered the question from a ZDF journalist (Can you clearly say if the next coach is italian?) with a clear No.
Why?! After all these rejections from other coaches (Alonso, Nagelsmann, Rangnik, Glasner, Flick, Tuchel) de Zerbi seems our best option. He plays very good possession based football and lead Brighton to a 6th place finish last season. I know he can be difficult at times, but he‘s still better than nobody.
I hope it‘s either a (really bad) bluff from Eberl or that he already has another Manager that no one knows about.

The US has a secret police force larger than the CIA
Employee count of CIA = 21,575.
Employee count of the Pentagon's "Signature Reduction Program" = +60,000.
This is America's secret police. The following quotes are from https://fightgangstalking.com/ :
“…The signature reduction effort engages some 130 private companies to administer the new clandestine world. Dozens of little known and secret government organizations support the program, doling out classified contracts and overseeing publicly unacknowledged operations.
"Federal spy agencies are using Americans to spy on their fellow citizens – the same approach to governance famously employed by communist East Germany."
Pentagon’s Signature Reduction Program
See Newsweek’s article: https://www.newsweek.com/exclusive-inside-militarys-secret-undercover-army-1591881
Some excerpts from that Newsweek article, plus more background information on the Pentagon’s Signature Reduction Program, can be found here: https://fightgangstalking.com/
“The largest undercover force the world has ever known is the one created by the Pentagon over the past decade. Some 60,000 people now belong to this secret army, many working under masked identities and in low profile, all part of a broad program called “signature reduction.” The force, more than ten times the size of the clandestine elements of the CIA, carries out domestic and foreign assignments, both in military uniforms and under civilian cover, in real life and online, sometimes hiding in private businesses and consultancies, some of them household name companies.
“…a little-known sector of the American military, but also a completely unregulated practice. No one knows the program’s total size, and the explosion of signature reduction has never been examined for its impact on military policies and culture. Congress has never held a hearing on the subject. And yet the military developing this gigantic clandestine force challenges U.S. laws, the Geneva Conventions, the code of military conduct and basic accountability.

Staged Incidents
Note these documented cases involving the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS, Canada's equivalent to the US' CIA) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP, Canada's national police force), which were reported in national newspapers.
From https://fightgangstalking.com/ :
“Disruption operations often involve tactics which are illegal, but difficult to prove. These tactics include – but are not limited to – overt surveillance (stalking), slander, blacklisting, “mobbing” (intense, organized harassment in the workplace), “black bag jobs” [home invasions], abusive phone calls, computer hacking, framing, threats, blackmail, vandalism, “street theater” (staged physical and verbal interactions with minions of the people who orchestrate the stalking), harassment by noises, and other forms of bullying. Many of these tactics were used by the FBI during its illegal COINTELPRO operations, as documented by stolen official documents and subsequent Congressional investigations.
"Although the general public is mostly unfamiliar with the practice, references to “disruption” operations – described as such – do occasionally appear in the news media, even though that fact would apparently be news to the editors of The New York Times. In May 2006, for example, an article in The Globe and Mail, a Canadian national newspaper, reported that the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) used “Diffuse and Disrupt” tactics against suspects for whom they lacked sufficient evidence to prosecute. A criminal defense attorney stated that many of her clients complained of harassment by authorities, although they were never arrested."
She can add me to that list too.
How to Develop a Hypnotic Sleeper Agent
By Dantalion Jones / Masters of Mind Control
The following “was” on the web, but has been removed. Surprise, surprise. But I saved its web files to my computer years ago, knowing that sooner or later it would be removed. I made a jpeg image of the web page as it once appeared, attached here.
Quoting the now-removed webpage: “How to Develop a Hypnotic Sleeper Agent” (from here to end of post):
Amid all the conspiracy theories one of the most feared is that there exist "sleeper agents" in our society who are programmed to come into service when they are triggered by a phone call or key word.
These alleged sleeper agents don't even know they are programmed to become saboteurs, soldiers, suicide bomber, etc because of the thoroughness of their programming. They are the feared "Manchurian Candidate" that the movies portray.
The question is "Are they real?"
If they are true sleeper agents there is no way of telling until they are activated. One can however theorize exactly how they are made.
Indoctrination
Using indoctrination a person can be made to embrace a religious or philosophical belief that would make becoming a sleeper agent possible.
This would be a person so committed to an ideal they would be willing to wait patiently as a member of society until they are called into action. These people would know their mission and consciously hold it secret while interacting with the rest of society.
Conditioning
Conditioning is a repetitive process where the desired responses are enforced and rewarded and unwanted responses are punished. This can be done consciously as part of training drill and it can be done subconsciously using hypnosis or drugs to create amnesia.
Hypnosis
It has been demonstrated that hypnosis can create "amnesia walls" in which the subject has no conscious memory of what happened in the hypnosis session. It has further been demonstrated that hypnosis can give post hypnotic instruction to be carried out automatically in the waking state without the subject knowing it or questioning the behavior.
What follows is conjecture and theory based on testimonials of people who were alleged to be sleeper agents and soldiers.
Continuous Supervisions
Continuous supervision doesn't mean that the subject is cut off completely from society. It means that they are constantly overseen and every aspect of their lives are managed (without their knowledge or consent) to support their hypnotic programming.
This would include:
• Repeated reinforcement of all hypnotic conditioning.
• Handlers. Handlers are people who help maintain the subjects environment to maintain all the programming. They can play the role of family, friends, lovers, psychologists, coaches or any roll the subject perceives as supportive. The truth is the handlers are their to support the successful fulfillment of the programming and not the subject as a person.
• Minimal sleep so that the mind/brain does not process all the sleeper conditioning during sleep.
• Creating constant environmental challenges like unemployment or poverty. This gives the subject something other than their programming to focus on.
• Frequent hospitalization. This gives overt opportunity to sedate the subject for conditioning. If the subject has a history of hospitalizations for mental disturbances all the better. No one will take them seriously.
It's real, and it's happening in secret. You have been warned.

19 May 2024: Copper prices are strong but is inflation strong?
https://preview.redd.it/xif4d7uefc1d1.png?width=782&format=png&auto=webp&s=ce05ee55baacdf319ef34482b47136a1095ad47b
Copper price has always doubled over a 5-year period. I am no expert in commodities, be it hard or soft commodities. However, if we are to use the 2019 price point to assess the doubling of copper price, it may not be a fair point. Reason is that the price date back then was 2019 and nearing that of the major burst up of COVID cases globally.
Now price momentum wise, copper seems all too good to have a further burst up since breaking above 5 USD per pound. Will it last? I truly cannot make such a call in terms of price momentum as futures price bet requires a shrewd understanding of timing and space of the price plus ongoing narratives and supply and demand dynamics. All these datapoints are not easy to be gathered and I certainly do not have an edge.
If I am to say copper price will go up further, its really a tough call as there may be signs that inflation may be coming down based on what Walmart and even McDonald may be commenting in US. However, if I am to look at the China containerized freight index, which is going out, it shows a seemingly healthy global economy, which is unshaken by global disruptions in terms of wars in various regions.
Will inflation come down this year? My take is inflation is sticky and its impact on equities prices are impacted by Federal Reserve's interest rate decision. I do not expect Federal Reserve to take an extreme rate hike move in face of upcoming US presidential election.
This will be a year where volatility may be not as significant compared to earlier part of the year. Unless there is significant escalation of war risks or any sudden systematic risks due to big banks' collapse, the time period now to US presidential election should not see drastic escalation of risk premium for global equities investors.
Making macro calls is not easy. My call is as good as yours but what I can say is the safeguard to my investments will still be the choice of a fundamentally strong company like Xiaomi (#01810HK listed in Hong Kong).
As always, this should not be construed as any investment or trading advice,

2024.05.19 10:23 Excellent_Tap998 You’re stupid if you get caught cheating in CS

I’m not gonna act like a saint and say don’t cheat. Everyone cheats in CS. You’re lying if you want me to believe you get 100% on all HWs without help or looking at solutions.
But what fascinates me, is the fact y’all are dumb enough to get caught. You do realize that every Professor lies when they say have special software that detects cheating? It’s just a MOSS check. There are dozens of articles that show you how to evade moss.
You’re a genuine dumbass if you just change the order of the code and the variable names.
You’re even more of a dumbass if you copy you’re written solutions word for word and don’t even bother changing variable letters. You do realize you can find the answers online right? Copying your friends and getting caught is even more sad than just cheating alone.
I think cheating in college is just sad and somewhat pathetic. Not trying to act superior but if you have to cheat in your classes, why are you in them? Like what’s the point of being here and getting a degree if you’re not learning. It’s gonna screw you over in the future. The only instance I get is if you’re taking a BS gen ed class but that’s not the majority of cases. I also get it if you had a busy week and didn’t get to it the night before. But if you’re so behind to the point where you don’t even understand the problems … just why?
But what’s even more stupid is the fact yo dumbass got caught. It ain’t that hard.

2024.05.19 10:20 n1c0_ds The LEA started requiring an Anmeldung (without telling anyone about it)

A little heads up for people applying for a residence permit at the Berlin immigration office.
  1. Since a while, people are get their application declined because they don't have an Anmeldung. Their website clearly says that the Anmeldung is optional, but some case workers send you home if you don't have it.
  2. Last week, they started checking the Melderegister, and cancelling the appointments of people that don't have an Anmeldung.
This means that immigrants must now find an apartment and register their address before they book an immigration office appointment, which can be 3-6 months in the future. An immigration lawyer pointed out that it's illegal, and the case worker answered "manchmal sind die Vorgaben halt anders als das Gesetz".
I'm leaving this here because it might seriously delay your residence permit application.

2024.05.19 10:18 tyrrorreignns 37M Gay guy from Ohio(USA) looking for new friends to chat and game with

Hello potential friends! I'm a cis gay man from northwest Ohio who was born and raised here but spent the last 15ish years in southern Arizona near the Mexican boarder. A lot of things have happened in the last year and it's made me realize that, while I have queer friends, I don't have any friends who are also gay men and as such there's a certain connection and understanding that I've been missing in my life. I'm sure we all understand how difficult it can be to find people to share multiple large aspects of your life and I'm hoping to find that here.
A few quick answers to what I assume will be common questions.
Career: I normally work in medicine but had a rare medical event of my own last year that left me unable to work temporarily and I am still on the mend. Hoping to get back to working soon!
Family: I'm currently living with an old friend from high school and her family while I recover from the above.
Marital status: forever alone, lol
Pets: 3 dogs. They are my world and they also have the combined cognitive function of a can of spray paint
Interests: - Video games: easily my biggest hobby. I'm a through and through Zelda fan oh and love most RPGs. Recently I've mostly been in to more comfy game or open world games. Common evening activities are Minecraft/modded Minecraft, Stardew valley, Skyrim, the Sims, core keeper. Though recently my closest guy friend and I have been hoping to try some of the spooky co-op games like lethal Company as he does love his horror games.
Music: I can enjoy most music but left to my own devices I tend to cycle between alt rock from the 1990s/early 2000s, soundtracks to musicals (currently obsessed with Hazbin Hotel), and crooners from the early to mid 1900s
I just realized how long this is getting so I think I will try to wrap up. I'm a nerdy gaymer just looking for similar people who want to have fun and be there for each other. As you can see I tend to be long-winded, excessively verbose, and stupidly sarcastic. Fair warning, I'm currently basically following an Australian time zone as my best mate lives in Melbourne and it's easier for me to talk to her this way so don't be surprised if I'm not conscious during the day. Hope to hear from some lovely folks soon!

2024.05.19 10:17 Hotpot-creations Short story - Mystery: Emily Is Missing

Short story - Mystery: Emily Is Missing
Emily Is Missing Story and image by Hotpot AI
Private investigator Dirk Armstrong had seen all the greatest sleazy hits in his line of work. The cheating spouses, the embezzling employees, the fake Worker's Compensation injuries. It had all become pretty mundane. But when a call from a new client came in, it caught his attention. This case was different, like something out of a movie. This case was about a missing heiress, Emily, who had vanished without a trace.
Emily came from an old-money banking family, with a fortune that could make anyone's head spin. And now, she was gone. Her family was desperate to find her, and they turned to Armstrong for help.
As Armstrong delved into the case, he quickly realized that this was not a simple missing person's case. There were layers upon layers of lies, deceit, and hidden motives in high society. The family's desperation to find Emily seemed to be more about protecting their fortune than finding their beloved daughter.
Armstrong's investigation led him to Emily's closest friends and family members, all of whom seemed to have something to hide. But one person stood out to Armstrong: Emily's brother, Marcus. He was the one who had hired Armstrong, and he seemed to be the most anxious to find his sister. But his anguish also seemed a bit overwrought. Maybe even faked.
As Armstrong dug deeper, he discovered that Marcus had a gambling problem and was in deep debt. Could he have something to do with Emily's disappearance? Armstrong couldn't shake off the feeling that Marcus was hiding something, but he needed concrete evidence to prove it.
Then, four days after she had gone missing, there was an traceable email communication from someone who stated that they had kidnapped Emily and were holding her hostage. They made a demand for a ransom of one million dollars, and stated that they would be in contact again soon.
Not long after this, Armstrong received a call from an overseas insurance company. They were investigating a million-dollar claim for Emily's kidnapping. They explained that six months earlier, the family had taken out a specialty insurance policy on Emily for high net worth individuals. It was a highly unusual policy, paying five million dollars in any case of kidnapping, seven million dollars in cases that are resolved by paying ransom, and 10 million dollars in cases where the insured individual dies in the course of the kidnapping.
The insurance company had serious doubts about the legitimacy of the claim, and wanted to send their own investigator to interview Armstrong. They wanted to know if he had found anything suspicious in his investigation.
Armstrong couldn't legally reveal the details of his investigation to any third party, but he did tell the insurance company's investigator that something didn't add up. He couldn't put his finger on it, but there were certain things about Emily's kidnapping that didn't ring true.
The insurance company's investigator thanked Armstrong for his time and left, but his words lingered in Armstrong's mind. He couldn't shake off the feeling that there was more to this case than meets the eye.
Weeks went by with no further word from the kidnappers. Everyone feared the worst. Police detectives gently counseled the family that there was little hope any kidnapped victim is still alive this long after the abduction and involving this long a silence. Because they didn't follow up on pursuing the million-dollar ransom, the family expressed fear that the kidnappers had panicked and killed Emily in order to walk away from the whole plan with impunity.
But then, early one morning, the seemingly impossible happened—Emily appeared. She looked exhausted, malnourished, and was wearing the same clothes she was wearing when she disappeared. She told a strange story of being abducted by three men in Halloween masks and thrown into a van. She said they had kept her in some warehouse in the inner city, handcuffed to one of the warehouse's metal support poles.
She said that she was never allowed to catch as much as a glimpse of the men's real faces the entire time. They did not abuse or physically harm her, she said, but they provided only minimal care during her captivity. Then, at daybreak this day, they suddenly removed her from the warehouse, put her in the same van, and drove her near home and tossed her out of the vehicle.
This all sounded very dramatic, but because of the insurance money at stake, no aspect of her story or the situation overall could be accepted at face value. The insurance company's investigator interviewed Emily at length, but could not find flaws in her story to gain leverage with since she had been—or claimed to have been—confined and blindfolded at all times in the kidnappers' presence.
Usually, a good insurance investigator can tell whether someone's story stinks by picking apart their story and analyzing all the details. But in this case, that wasn't possible because Emily had not seen anything at all, and only heard a few things, none of which were helpful to police and the investigation.
As Armstrong continued his own investigation, he ultimately uncovered a shocking truth: Emily was not really kidnapped. It had been a fraud pulled by her family, who had been experiencing financial pressures despite being pretty rich compared to most people. They had concocted the plan, and Marcus was the mastermind behind it all. He had convinced Emily to go along with the pan to fake her kidnapping, promising her it would solve all of the family's money problems.
Armstrong confronted Marcus with the evidence, and he finally cracked. He confessed to everything, including Emily's involvement. The family's greed had blinded them, and now they were facing serious consequences. Emily herself was destined to do several years in prison for her participation, which was critical to the entire scheme.
As Armstrong handed over his findings to the authorities, he couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction. Justice had been served, and Emily was safe and sound. But the case left a lasting impact on Armstrong. He had seen the dark side of high society, where money and power could corrupt even the closest of families. And he knew that he would never look at his job the same way again.

2024.05.19 10:17 rather_pass_by Ai SEO tool speedy brand backed by Google ventures!!!

Found it very funny. Speedy brand, the new product to generate SEO content. Backed by yc and... Google Ventures!
For sure, we are all curious how speedy brand can determine which content will have a higher SEO score and which one lower. We don't know if speedy brand has cracked this code.. probably not!
But even if they did, Google ventures has played their cards by backing them. If their product does work, it will be not surprising for them to take over the company, get their algorithm, then update their own search ranking Algo.
To me it's a clear case of conflicts of interest. Sure the founders might make big money, but the users.. unlikely.
