HELP: Need advice on dating my ex's former co-worker

2024.05.14 08:21 Popular-Arachnid-981 HELP: Need advice on dating my ex's former co-worker

I am in serious need of guidance on a post breakup dating issue. A serious boyfriend (30) (Hank) and I (32) were together for 2 1/12 years and lived together for 1. We broke up in almost a year ago semi-amicably but stopped speaking 5 months ago.
Cut to now, I matched with a former co-worker of his on Hinge (Ben). Hank was “laid off” from that job in May 2023. However, they worked on the same team, interacted frequently while they worked together, and follow each other on Instagram but they do not have contact after Hank left that job (to my knowledge). My ex never liked Ben and would talk shit about him to me during our relationship so I was aware of their relation to one another.
Do I mention this to Ben at all or not? We have plans to get drinks later this week and I am conflicted. Hank is my ex and irrelevant to either of us since they no longer work together and haven’t for some time. On the other hand, it feels weird not mentioning it because I am allowing this guy to talk about himself and his job, some of which I already know via my ex. I had been playing dumb but he has since said where he works and the team/type of work he is in within the company (small team)...not to mention I have his first and last name and he is easily google-able.
I don’t want to come across as a crazy ex that is dating my ex-boyfriend’s former associates but I also don’t know that I owe him anything. I also want to give Ben a chance to bail if he thinks it’s strange. Keep in mind, when Hank and I were dating, I had gone to a few intimate dinner parties with partners and associates of the team but Ben was never there.
When is an appropriate time to bring this up?
P.S. (Read for additional background if interested + additional question:
Should I even pursue this at all? The chance of my ex and I getting back together is just about 0% but I low key still love him and in my delusional mind if I managed to really get my shit together maybe some fay we could...and I think that this would be something Hank (my ex) would find messed up as he feels as though Ben took his job from him (however unwarranted). I can't be certain but I think he may have even said it would bother him if we were to even break up and I were to start dating Ben. That being said, I know that they sexted while we were together (we had an open relationship but still). Additionally, I don't know where my ex and I even stand. I am assuming it isn't on good terms because he blocked my number (presumably because I called him a couple times post 3AM when I was drunk/high but I was messed up in the throws of a break up and that's typical toxic bs). I'm taking it to mean he is so over me and doesn't want to deal at all, thinks I am a mess, and couldn't care less. So more power to me? Part of me thinks, and hopes that he blocked me because he knew it was over and had to just make a clean break (I had heard he was having a bit if a life crisis shortly after our break up...not just bc of me but not nott bc of me)....I say this because for a few months after our break up we would text. Just about this and that. Nothing necessarily of substance but just little things. Also, right before he blocked me he had messaged me pictures of our old apartment and said "do you miss it?"...I think he was trying to reminisce but I'm not sure because I didn't respond, didn't plan to, and then called him drunk at 3AM. He didn't answer but then the next day when I texted him to apolgize for calling late (because I knew he hated that) he had blocked me and I found out he dropped off my childhood decorations at my brother's house rather than at mine.
Soooo it's over. I just can't help but hesitate because he did mean a lot to me and frankly he had some legit reasons for the break up. Not that I was cheating or anything but I was using drugs behind his back, which he was unaware of exactly but the affects of my behavior had repercussions (i.e. not wanting to have sex, being lazy, not being a proactive partner, not working out, etc.)....It's hard to say but I took it for granted..He was not saint either to be honest. He pushed for an open relationship that I didn't want but agreed because I was in love with him and I loved our connection.
Ok, I'm sorry. I got off topic. The question is - do I mention to this new guy that I used to date his former coworker? When do I bring it up, if at all? I had planned on playing dumb but feel as though I no longer can because it's been made crystal clear that they worked at the same company, at the same time, in the same group.

2024.05.14 07:30 Correct-Art1763 Amazing quotes from JL & JLU

I love both of these, and so many amazing lines still hit me to this day. Shows like this make me wish stuff like the Sonic games actually started trying again. Here’s a list of lines that, after all this time, still absolutely break me, give me chills, or both:
“For all that fierce exterior, I’ve never met anyone who cared as deeply about his fellow man as Bruce Wayne, except maybe you.”
“I did what I thought was right then, and that’s what I’m doing now.”
“You grabbed power!” “And with that power, we’ve made a world where no 8-year-old boy will ever lose his parents…..because of some punk with a gun.”
“I’m not the man who killed President Luthor. Right now, I wish to Heaven that I were, but I’m not.”
“I got cheated out of my childhood.” “I know what that’s like.” “You do, don’t you?”
“One little scare, and you betray us?! You stole Kara’s DNA! Violated her trust! MY trust!”
“The creature knows only rage and seeks only oblivion. Your mace may be the one object on Earth that can grant him peace.”
“We don’t do that to our enemies.” “Speak for yourself.” “I’m trying to speak for Superman.”
“Time and again, I’ve beaten you. Humbled you. What makes you think today’s outcome will be any different?” “Because this time, I won’t stop until you’re just a greasy smear on my fist.”
“Gentlemen, it’s been an honor.”
“Tell me. How many of us do you have to kill to keep us safe?”
“We create our own purpose in life. Now go create yours.”
“If you’re quitting because it’s easier than continuing the fight, then you’re not the heroes we all thought you were. The world needs the Justice League, and the Justice League needs you, Superman.”

2024.05.14 06:50 ApplePieMoody I feel guilty about the fact that I consider leaving my girlfriend

My relationship with my current girlfriend has always been quite like a rollercoaster from the beginning.
From trust issues, lack of communication, jealousy... it's been two years and I can safely say that the first year of our relationship was quite a mess.
I've never cheated on her. And never have I considered it. I did do things that she didn't want me to out of resentment, but in the end, I've always been faithful to her. But she never trusted me.
Fast forward to a month ago, after trting for a wholr year to build back trust. I realised that she may never really trust me, and trust is the foundations of a solid relationship. And I knew it was for the better to let go. And after an argument about one of my co-worker that I wanted to get to know(no romantic interest), I told her that things didn't work for me and that she lacked the trust I tried so hard to build after that first year of relationship.
And after explaining my view, to my surprise, she told me she understood what I said, that the fact she showed jealousy was out of fear that I took her for granted and would cheat on her if she ever showed me that she trusted me.
But the damage is done, it's really weird but I feel like I can't trust the fact that she trusts me, and I really feel like an idiot.
TL DR : Spent my entire relationship thinking my GF didn't trust me. Now she shows trust, but I don't believe her and feel like an idiot for thinking that way

2024.05.14 05:55 kibii_ my sister gets on my nerves

i love my sister, would give her the world if she asked, but omfg she’s such a stupid b!tch sometimes!!!
she got divorced a couple years ago for cheating and she complained about her husband all the time, i would get so angry at her for it. granted i don’t and will never know the full extent to their relationship, according to her he’s a good family guy, he’s just “too old” for her. they don’t look comparable, she was always antagonizing him, and he takes things too seriously. neither of them are angels in this story though. my sister just gets on my goddamn nerves because she’s so confident and wrong and she’s just inconsiderate!!
she always blames her harsh attitude to be a product of her childhood, but we grew up in a similar environment and i hate to say- i never turned out to be like her. recently she did something that gave me a anxiety attack, and instead of stopping, she kept laughing and insisted i forgive her after i calmed down because “it was an accident”.
and maybe her relationship part seems irrelevant but they raised me when i was neglected by my parents, so i saw her ex husband 24/7 as a kid and seeing her disregard her family for another guy so easily really severed my relationship with her. tbh as much as i love her as sister i hold sm resentment toward her.

2024.05.14 05:33 Straight-Message-432 "Children" expose deceit, "farm" is in civil strife, "painting cake" seeks comfort

"Forget the tears of your parents, forget the tenderness of your husband", this is what Guo Wengui said to deceive Yan Limeng; "My father is Guo Wengui, and his insults and injuries to women are infuriating, and I will not stand idly by", this is what Guo Wengui's daughter Guo Mei said to Accusation of Guo Wengui's evil deeds; "Comrades, please act in advance", this is Guo Wengui's ecstasy soup. Nowadays, Guo Wengui is in prison and facing verbal and verbal criticism from his relatives and society. It can be said that he is truly "betrayed and separated from his relatives". As usual, Guo Wengui, who is in prison, continues to "live chat randomly" in an attempt to cover up everything and "grant money" to himself as a "red-letter criminal and fraudster" who is being rounded up by the judiciary. "Smashing the pot, exposing the lie, and judging" is like Lingchi's knife cutting into Guo Wengui's vital points. Masturbating orally is no longer helpful, and will only be self-defeating.
https://preview.redd.it/f9n1pqawab0d1.jpg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aac58dd0affa51f66b1641cc3922adbecca69796
If it sticks to the pan, it will become moldy, and if it is covered with gold, it cannot conceal its "broom star" characteristics. Judging from the past, it has become an iron rule that "sticking to the pot will lead to mold" and "supporting Guo will lead to death", and Guo Wengui himself has the attribute of "broom star". It is a fact that "investors" have lost their entire fortune and lost their lives; it is a reality that "those who support Guo" have had their marriages broken up and their husbands and wives are at odds; it is a norm that "those who stick to the pot" are being pursued through judicial investigations and public opinion. It is Guo Wengui's method to squeeze everyone to the extreme; it is Guo Wengui's conspiracy to structure every sentence ruthlessly. Bannon stuck to the pot, was deceived and arrested, and the judicial investigation has not been slowed down; the pro-democracy movement stuck to the pot, was abandoned and scolded, and now fights back to expose the deception of Wengui; Yan Limeng stuck to the pot, was banned and condemned, and encountered Wengui defrauding Dai Gao cap. From a practical point of view, there are countless people who stick to the pot, but only a few who get good rewards. Yan Limeng, who was deceived by Guo Wengui and Bannon, became their puppet in creating the "epidemic made in Wuhan". When the rumor-mongering platform Guo Wengui's "career" is to confuse right and wrong, and the "ability" of a liar is to tell nonsense. Guo Wengui vividly interprets these two.
Trapped in a quagmire, it's hard to stop cheating. The "Guo Scam" is full of loopholes. At this point, Guo Wengui's lies and scams can be called a "sieve", full of loopholes. For a long time, he has used his identity as a "victim" to "sell misfortune" to the world and "fool" ants, creating a scammer's way of "having the 'blue and gold' in his hand, and he is not afraid of spreading rumors and smearing." Looking at Guo Wengui from a "family perspective", Guo Meizai once said in a tweet: "Wang Yanping is Guo Wengui's nephew's daughter-in-law, and later became Guo Wengui's 'girlfriend'", and mentioned that "Guo Wengui loves women but also harms them", tweeted Although small, it contains a huge amount of information. Combined with Guo Wengui's long history of skillfully using "pornographic, ethical" and other obscene words, it can be seen that Guo Wengui is a "practitioner" of his words. Every ridiculous and shameless evil act, every scam that is outraged by people and gods, and every deception and abduction. Lies are all "true portrayals" of Guo Wengui's life. Guo Wengui's "revelation" is actually a "mirror". Outsiders can see Guo Li's miserable past in the first half of his life, while Guo himself has modified it to deceive the world. This is the nature of a "charlatan". Everything is revealed in the report, and the Plague Turtle scam is difficult to continue; everything is encircled and tried during the investigation, and Guo Qiao is struggling.
The Guizhou donkey has no skills, and masturbation cannot change the ending of the "lost dog". As usual, Gui Wengui continued to incite his ignorant comrades to harass the blame-breakers by "financing" for himself, "seeking profits" for his comrades, and "breaking the news" to the world. Lawsuits were lost one after another, scams were exposed one after another, and summonses were served one after another. Guo Wengui was already at the end of his rope, had no way out, and was sitting in jail. Today, Guo Wengui is still in prison seeking comfort and "mouth high" to relieve his depression. He is already in the predicament of a "lost dog" and a "drowned dog". Behind Guizhou Donkey's helpless wail is the ringing of the doomsday bell. It is Guo's deception that the end is coming. sign.
"Children" expose deceit, "Farm" is in civil strife, and "Happy Country" is coming to an end; "Painting" seeks comfort, "Live Broadcast" makes people happy, and "Plague Turtle" jumps over the wall in a hurry. At this point, "the country will be subjugated by fraud" has become a foregone conclusion, and the script of masturbation has long been ineffective. Continuing to struggle will only add more jokes and be self-defeating; "reality slaps in the face" has become the norm, and the deception of gold-plated drama has failed, and rumors continue to be spread. You will surely burn yourself by playing with fire and bring about your own destruction. I would like to advise the little ants who still support Guo and wait and see, don’t hesitate to collect debts while Guo Wengui still has interest, otherwise when Guo Wengui is shackled and imprisoned, debt collection will become an empty dream.

2024.05.14 05:28 Otherwise_Abies_8494 5 Takeaways from the Mallards-Gators opening series.

1. Kolm pitching and confidence.
In a series that had many interesting storylines such as Jorgensen’s and Behen’s first series with their new teams, Evan’s first official series in MLW after being drafted with the first overall pick in the past draft and Cheetam’s first series as manager it was Preston Kolm who caught my eye the most.
I thought that surely Jorgensen would get the ball for game 2. Instead, manager Tommy Coughlin decided to go with Preston, clearly, he impressed him in the offseason, and he certainly impressed me as well. He showed great command, his pitches looked sharp, movement was working, and you could see that as he got deeper into the game his confidence was rising, he even broke out a Kracht-esque sidestep pitch for a strikeout. He ended up with a no hitter and a near perfect game just ruined by a single walk.
Now, with no intention of ruining the Mallards hype party, it is important to note that the Gators are probably not the most competitive team in the league, and their offense might be the weakest of all teams. They only scored one run in 9 innings (granted, the Mallards scored 2) but still, it was an amazing first outing for Kolm.
What was interesting to watch is that the confidence was not only bounded to pitching, but it carried over to everything else. He made some nice defensive plays in the field including a really tough one. At the plate he reached in 4 out of his 6 plate appearances.
I will follow his progress closely as the season goes on, but the Mallards suddenly have really nice depth in their rotation, with 3 very capable arms on the roster.
2. Sawyer Behen can pitch!
Coming into this series many eyes where on Behen, and for good reason. After the very loud and controversial trade that saw Behen land with the Gators, there is a lot of pressure on him to perform this year, especially with the comments he made during the offseason, and if this series is any indication of what we will see from him, ohh boy did the Gators win this trade. After Jorgensen’s departure the Gators will need to fill the franchise player vacancy. And while I don’t think Behen can be enough of a hitter to fill that void, he showed he can be the face of the Gators pitching staff. Behen looked unhittable, and aside from a Robles rocket to left field, no one really made strong contact off him. His final line was 7IP, 1ER, 16K and 9BB. With Behen at this level on the mound, rookie Evans talent and Cheetam as a third arm the Gators quietly have a solid rotation, capable of winning games even against the most dangerous offenses as they nearly did in the 3 games against the Mallards.
3. Gators rookies are here!
Aiden Richard joined the Gators as an undrafted free agent, and while I’m sure it was not the debut he hoped for, as he went 0-2 and had a whoopsie play in right field that resulted in a Robles home run which ended up being the winning run for the Mallards. He looked good. He was responsible for one of the few Gators’ hard-hit balls, unfortunately it went just foul instead of what would have been a monster home run. But his swing looks good, he clearly has power and I think as the season goes on and as he racks up more plate appearances, he will be a good player for the Gators.
As for fist overall pick Jeremy Adams it was mixed bag, he started off great with a well hit ball to open the series for the Gators but wasn’t able to get any hits after that. Still, he managed to reach base 4 times in 10 PA’s. Which was the best mark on his team. The swing looks dangerous and there is definitively a power threat in there. I think it will take some time for him to adjust to MLW pitchers and rules, but I am confident he will figure it out. However, what really impressed me was his pitching. It is normal for first year players to struggle as pitchers, but Evans looked as comfortable as a veteran star pitcher. He only allowed one run in 3 innings of work and that run should have a major asterisk next to it, as Richard pushed the ball over the fence on a batted ball that would have never made it past the fence without some help. Overall, I loved what I saw from him on the mound, and Behen now must be absolutely remarkable if he doesn’t want to lose his spot as the guy in the pitching rotation. I would go as far as to say that Evans might already be the best second arm in the league, (if he will be the second arm for much longer is really in question) to say he has ace potential is an underestimation.
4. What happened to the Mallards offense?
If you would have told me that the Mallards would manage only 2 runs in the whole series against the Gators, I would have called you crazy. Nevertheless, that is exactly what happened, and I have no idea what to think about it. I had previously called the new Mallards offense the best assembled lineup in modern MLW history. The fact that they couldn’t really get anything going against a rookie pitcher and a 2.48 ERA pitcher in Behen is honestly, surprising. There is no point in trying to analyze why this happened. Its too small of a sample size. Let’s just call it an off day for them, but its something that is worth paying attention for their next series.
5. What happened to the cheat code?
I believed Cheetam could return to his usual form as a hitter, after an awful 2023 season, but it was a torrid start. If the Gators want to play playoff baseball this season, they need Cheetam’s bat to wake up. He is now the leader of this incredible young team, and I fear that if they keep getting no production out of him their season will be a short one.

2024.05.14 04:47 Soft_Gardenwolf My husband is secretly awful

I’ve been with my husband for 11 years, married for 4, we are 32. We have a 2 year old and I’m pregnant with another. Our friends and family think we have the perfect life. The careers, the salary, the house the cars ect. I do not take my blessings for granted. Everyone adores my husband, praises him for being such a good husband and father, but is he? He’s secretly awful. He is a certified man child with no self management skills and it’s ruining our life. It’s always been a background issue but add in the kids and the fact that I’ve grown so much as a person and he has not, and the resentment is unbearable.
I handle every single adult aspect of our life from bills to appointments (even his) because he simply can not. He forgets EVERYTHING. If I don’t give him directions he just kind of stands there like a sim. He will “take care of me” by doing things I ask him to do while I lay on the couch for a hour with morning sickness, which I am thankful for! But also, I have to remind him to floss, take vitamins, go to the dentist, get hair cuts, brush his teeth, eat lunch, ect. I have to give him specific directions with house work and the baby. He is a great father and he does not complain about doing anything I ask him to do, it’s just that I shouldn’t have to ask because he’s a grown ass man. Sometimes I have to ask him to do the same thing literally 5-40 times before it gets done. He has zero time management. Honestly, I don’t know how he’s so successful at work. Speaking of work.. I have to wake him up for work at 430am or he will not get up on his own. He makes zero effort to be romantic unless it’s a holiday I reminded him about and since I’ve been pregnant he can’t last longer than 20 seconds for sex (wish I was exaggerating) I’ve been asking him to become more aware, thoughtful and self productive for a very very long time. I got him a planner for our anniversary a few weeks ago, he hasn’t used it yet. I speak to him, I get silence. He says he’s thinking or answering in his head so 7/10 if I talk to him I get no answer and it makes me feel insane. I know he loves me, I love him. I want to just focus on loving him. We fight so much about the same 5 things we can’t even enjoy being a young married couple starting a family. I want him to make the changes so we can move forward. Hard to move forward when he is in complete denial that he does anything wrong. He said the only problem with our marriage is that I am always bitching at him and I seem so unhappy…. What can I do besides beg him to grow up? I can’t leave him, I don’t want to and even if I did it would ruin all of our lives mainly the babies. He doesn’t cheat or abuse me, so should I just keep being his mommy and single handedly hold the weight of the whole family on my own and just suck it up? He would be happy to live happily ever after with me raising him like he’s one of the kids. If I stopped nagging we would have the perfect marriage everyone thinks we have.

2024.05.14 03:50 BL4NKOfficial Stay or no? M32 F29

So, I'm 32M. I've been in a relationship for 12 years 29F. When we started dating I already had my issues. Substance abuse, depression, social anxiety, cheating (on my part. I know. Its a shit thing to do). But, we worked through that. Any problems we had we worked through. We were at the bottom. I was at my lowest economically. Until, we had kids. My depression has always been bad. I always try to keep an optimistic front. Always see things from positive point of view. But, she started being affected by postpartum after our daughter was born. And, then the spiral. I started feeling less love and trust (granted I worked super duper extra hard to "try" to work the trust back up. She just can't let it go and try to move forward) I get berated with complaints about how much I don't do all the time. How im a bad parent. How what I'm doing now for the family doesn't mean much cause I'd do it anyways if I didn't have kids. 3 and a half years. I spent coming straight home from work. Avoiding hanging out with friends. Being open about who I'm communicating with. Where I'm going and who will be there when I'd get guilt tripped into hanging with friends. The whole time I'm getting practically no physical intimacy. No emotional intimacy. No concern for how im doing or feeling. It wasn't until about a week ago. That I came clean about how I really feel. That I'm done with our relationship. She spends her time yelling at the kids, making excuses for not wanting to go back to work, guilting me into spending money we don't have on HER because she deserves it. Even though I'm going broke already trying to handle the bills and kids on my own. And, how I was okay co parenting. Here come the water works. I start feeling guilty. And, I don't leave. And, all I do is give and give and get told I'm not enough. I'm a nice person. And, I tend to get manipulated by people because of it. And, I've been growing in my work and social life. But, now. I'm stuck feeling like I'm beating a dead horse. We should broken up when I chose to be unfaithful the first time. And, now. I'm the one who's losing interest. I don't want to leave for someone else. I just want to leave to focus on the kids and my mental health. And, I feel like she could benefit from the same thing. The past week. She has been "trying" and I'm still just not in it. The night we had the conversation about how I feel. She desperately threw herself at me sexually. And, I should have said no. Immediately after I felt bad. Because, I know I don't want the relationship. And, I'm still entertaining her. Maybe from a place of not knowing how she is going to react. I know she isn't good with change. And, I'm trying to be good to her while also separating. I may not be "in love" with her. But, I do still love her. She made me who I am today and I don't want her to be bad off. Sorry for the loooong rant. But, I need to vent to someone other than a friend or family. I'm severely depressed and lonely. We don't even sleep in the same bed. I'm just I'm done. I don't know if I should stay or go.

2024.05.14 00:51 yenom08 Today my car was meant to brake down.

Fortunately enough today I was able to enjoy this glorious victory. A small victory of many to come, but a victory nonetheless.
69,420 days have gone by since we have seen movement and volume like today. I saw my portfolio go green for the first time since the flash crash. Granted there is no green, there is no red. There is only hodl.
Back to the story at hand… I sat for hours as I waited for a tow truck to come grab me, but god were those hours cherished. Reflecting on life, bills, debt, high mortgage rates, general cost of living… selling never crossed my mind and it never will.
I remember why I held in 21’ it was because of the buy button being disabled. We all felt cheated.
I remember why I held in 22’ it was because of the DD & beginning to understand the bigger picture of CS&DRS.
I remember why I held in 23’ it was because I starting gaining a lot of faith in RC & the GS team. They were doing/planning/testing some big stuff.
Now I know why I hold in 24’ it is because when all else fails, I am apart of something bigger than myself. There is no WE, but together all the I’s matter.
All us apes have our battles. 2024 isn’t an easy time to live in if you are not already set. Keep your head up, eat your bananas and DRS the peels when you’re done. (NFA)
As for me, I’m going to buckle up and enjoy the greatest show on earth. Well I guess I won’t be buckling up any time soon.
P.s. if at all, take this as a reminder that you’re doing the right thing here and now. Things happen for a reason.

2024.05.14 00:41 Exciting-Peace-9259 How can I prepare for my ex to come over?

My ex and I broke up in November. He is finally coming over this weekend to pick up his things and I’m terrified for it. He has been incredibly mean and hurtful over the past few months and I experience intense anxiety whenever he messages me. But I also feel like I’m clinging onto some hope for this relationship because we broke up with him cheating on me and getting into a new relationship immediately after. It’s been hard for me and I haven’t gotten into a new relationship yet. I have grown in my professional life, but he doesn’t see that. For example, in the past 6 months, I have gotten fully licensed, have gotten a huge raise, have started to explore more areas of growth that I wanted to do (like teaching and being a trainer), I have built a lot of professional connections, I have applied for a grant that will pay off my $100,000 in student loans, I am starting to look into buying my own home instead of renting a house from my parents… I am doing the things I never thought I could do..
Even though I have all this growth in my professional life, I still feel like that’s not visible from the outside, and it feels like I’m going to come in looking weak and I don’t want him to have that satisfaction.
What can I do to improve my self esteem and make it seem or appear that things are going well for me?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I have not used any sort of cheat, I only play this game with my wife whenever we go on a trail or grocery shopping. Rather, I paid $10-ish to change my gym (?) to be the same as my wife's so we can raid together. I didn't know how raid worked so I initially had a different team. It would be silly for me to pay real money in-game and also use cheat, imo. Subsequently, I received an email that my account has been submitted for deletion. At this point, I thought this was an automatic process after my account was banned.
I was initially upset that I was randomly banned, requested Niantic what ToS I violated, if there were any. Received what seems like a template response that answered nothing.
2 days ago, I made a new PoGo account [Account_2@gmail.com] while hoping my first account would be unbanned. This morning (13MAY2024) around 1030 CST, all my Pokemons are transferred into candies. I didn't have any rare pokemon so that was not the issue, but the issue is that my account was breached, and at this point I made a connection that this could be the same reason my first account was banned, and that the deletion process may not be automatic.
The twist, I work for a 3-lettered organization specializing in cyber. Brought this matter to couple of my colleagues and came up with few theories and additional questions. Here's the note below.
Account_1@gmail.com
"Permanently Banned"
Account deleted. See attached image.
Account_2@gmail.com
All Pokemon Transferred
Account accessed?
Both have different passwords.
Account_1 has 2-factor authentication, Account_2 does not. Did this result in the differing actions? (Deletion vs Transferred pokemons/Different actors?)
Both account's gmail received notification "Pokemon GO was granted access to your Google account" from "IPhone" in "Texas" prior to activity. (Account_1 = 1 day prior, Account_2 = 15min prior to log-in)
Account Deletion request requires Niantic sending an email with a "Code" to reply back with. The said code is STATIC. Amazingly, it does not change regardless of who submits it. Its the same code for everyone.
Theoretically, a spoofed email address sending the code to Niantic will complete the delete process. Second, the *Username does not matter in the Account Deletion form. I can literally name it anything. Cannot test as this is beyond jurisdiction.
Question still to be answered:
How was the email account leaked? Was it leaked/breached?
Why was Pokemon Go specifically targeted (If credentials were compromised, why was this the "first" target out of say, my banking apps?). Either the actor is trying to get my attention (unlikely as there's no benefit, or the actor is only capable of attacking through PoGo app)
Account_2@gmail.com's PoGo is assumed to be breached completely if Pokemon was "transferred"
I can try to sniff the network traffic from the app to see if credentials are being sent in cleartext, but I'm starting to lose interest and am considering just deleting the app. I attempted to notify Niantic but amazingly just received the same template response when my account was banned.
Maybe this info will help someone else, possibly research further but it'll be in the backburner."

2024.05.13 23:42 jayseejewel How the Polyamory could have been handled differently (P.2)

This is party 2 of a discussion regarding how poly could have been handled a little better in BG3. I recommend you read through the first part here: https://new.reddit.com/BaldursGate3/comments/1crb2s7/how_the_polyamory_could_have_been_handled/ so you can get context and I sound like less of a rambling weirdo.

Astarion:
Out of all the discussions, people were the most confused by this choice. Not only does making him poly at the last minute feel contrary to a lot of statements he himself makes throughout his romance arc, but it also runs counter to what other characters say about him and his backstory as a whole. He is one of the most insecure characters in the game, he was trained for two hundred years to lie in order to avoid punishment, and he has far more trauma and healing to do than the other characters. Astarion is the most likely to lie about the Halsin relationship in order to avoid appearing weak or demanding. Out of the poly players who expressed disappointment, Astarion was the one that bothered them the most, since many felt he wasn’t fully consenting.
Most of my reasons for why he’s not a good poly option (from a development standpoint) have already been stated in earlier sections, so most of this will be spent diving into the “Is he fine with poly or not?” debate, which had me intrigued. (This will be the longest section and won’t be as connected to the overall topic, so if you want to skip to the Halsin part, feel free.)
I’ll start with the main arguments I see defending him being poly.
Argument 1: He says he’s fine with Halsin and the twins, so we should take him at his word.
While this can definitely be argued, and it’s not good to treat an adult man like a baby, his constant lying as a defense mechanism and current issues with sex/relationships do need to be taken into account (if not by the players then at least by the developers). There were plenty of people (some of them victims of SA) who talked about their own experience of tolerating poly because they were scared of their partner leaving or finding them too demanding/narrow minded. This led to their self-esteem and views on relationships growing worse rather than better. For someone like Astarion, who outright admits he has never had a healthy relationship and doesn’t want to lose this one, it’s understandable that people view his response as a coping mechanism rather than his own genuine feelings. There were also two different mental health professionals who reminded players that although a few victims of abuse do enter poly relationships, statistically most do not and it is far more common for them to agree to poly relationships out of pressure (which often make the person’s mental issues even worse in the long run).
Argument 2: He claims to be fine with open relationships during Act 1.
This is countered by the fact that everything he says about himself in Act 1 is a lie (unless he’s specifically talking about Cazador). He lies about wanting to sleep with you, he lies about his identity until he bites you, he claims to only care about sex (then later admits it makes him feel disgust and loathing), and he brags about his former conquests (which you later find out he regrets and feels guilt over). His statements that he’s fine with open relationships are made when choosing between him and another Origin character in Act 1 or 2, but this is also said at a time when his act is still up and he isn’t in love with the player. If you choose between him and another Origin character AFTER he confesses and let’s his guard down, he insists that he is NOT fine with sharing. “You’ve decided to replace me?” If the player says they care about both him and the other person, he’ll say, “Don’t give me that. I can see what this is.” Then he promptly breaks up with them. This second reaction is not only said using his genuine voice (whereas before he was still using his fake one), but a few poly people mentioned that this isn’t a normal reaction from someone who is fine with poly.
This isn’t to shame people who want to think Astarion is fine with it, or to judge players who went through with the poly relationship. Instead, this is once again asking the developers why they chose this option, rather than someone who wouldn’t spark so much debate or remind abuse victims of their past without giving them a dialogue option to address it. (This is a similar issue with Astarion’s brothel scene. They should have either removed it by having him say he’s not comfortable again, or at the very least, let players talk to him about it after.)
I think it’s pretty clear that after reading the discussions and evidence both sides provided, I myself lean heavily to one side. However, the main defense I personally have for the opposite side is that the writers were sometimes vague about Astarion’s true preferences and wishes. I especially felt this during the origin playthrough, where his narrator would constantly flip between him liking hedonism and despising it. It gave the impression that two opposing authors were wrestling while writing him, unable to decide where he truly stood on things. It felt similar to how the devs tried to write a respectful story of overcoming abuse and the fear of being sexualized, only to turn around and repeatedly sexualize the character in both the game and promotional material. I really wish the writers and developers had picked a lane and stuck with it.
Now I’ll get into the evidence for the counter theory: That he’s not actually open to sharing, but says he’s fine with it to avoid appearing weak or losing his partner. I personally prefer this theory because it makes the writing seem more intentional, adds more nuance to an already complex character, and feels more realistic. However, even if this is what the writer or actor were trying to convey, it’s still a far worse alternative to simply keeping him out of the poly options in the first place.
  1. His hedonistic playboy persona is stated to be a façade. Anything he says in act one about being poly and wanting open relationships is stated when he is both wearing his mask and before he trusts the player. Every statement about relationships here has to be taken with a grain of salt because his mask is centered around attracting victims for Cazador. Since he hated bringing “sweet innocents” to his master, it makes sense that he would initially try to attract the opposite (“criminals and brothel goers”) by sleeping around and making a show of wanting casual relationships.
  2. Once he gets comfortable in the relationship, he makes it clear he is looking for someone who will make him feel safe and value him for his personality over his body (“I don’t want you to think of me in terms of sex. I don’t think I want anyone to.” “How do you want me to see you?” “As a person. Is that so much to ask?”). If the player chooses to sexualize him, he will go through with it, then regret it later and break up. He makes it very clear in Act two that he’s not actually looking for casual hookups because they make him feel “ashamed and alone”. So it is odd that he’s fine with Halsin (who seems to care more about the sex and the body than the emotional bonding) and the brothel (which is solely about sex). One can argue that he’s fine with the poly relationship because he’s not taking part, but Halsin DOES wish for him to take part ‘eventually’.
  3. Jumping off of that, Astarion’s dialogue makes it clear he wants a partner who cares about more than just sex, but if you tell him you want to date Halsin solely for the sex (and because Astarion’s not doing it with you), he will say that’s fine and he doesn’t mind the player seeking sex from others. This seems to counter his previous statements and arc. It’s especially strange that even if you reinforce his greatest insecurity (that his refusal to have sex has made his partner immediately seek out other people), he will still claim to be fine with it.
  4. In terms of dialogue, the actor for Astarion seems to be very intentional when using the fake theatrical masking voice vs. the more genuine softspoken voice he uses when he’s comfortable and being honest. The fake voice is blatantly obvious throughout the Act 1 romance, in Act 2 if you force him to obey the blood merchant (his voice goes from genuinely scared to flirtatious and over the top within seconds), and in Cazador’s mansion where he’ll speak genuinely to you, then be over the top when addressing Cazador’s servants. He’ll often use jokes and loud laughter to conceal his true feelings and insecurities. Meanwhile his laughter in the confession scene, graveyard scene, and Spawn epilogue is quiet and subdued because he’s being genuine. It feels like a strange coincidence that when addressing both the Halsin situation and the brothel situation, his voice becomes very loud and high pitched again, he immediately starts making jokes, and his laughter is over the top. This hints at him not wanting to go along with either situation, but he’s putting himself through it because this is what his partner wants and since he’s tolerated sexual stuff he hated before, he can do it again. Plus, after killing Cazador, he wants to ensure no one views him as weak. He has to prove to himself and his lover (at least in his mind) that refusing to take the Ascendant powers was good and he’s strong enough to not need it. I can understand players not picking up on the voice changes (because not everyone is going to replay the game or even care) but those who did notice it believe it’s done intentionally (either by the actor or the writer or both). If it’s not intentional, then it’s a strange decision to make from a developer’s standpoint.
  5. Throughout the threads I read, most poly people made it clear that poly relationships require complete trust, clear communication, and general confidence. Astarion himself admits to lacking all of those traits to some degree. If you don’t romance him, he will literally not trust any of the characters right up to the epilogue (he’ll hold a knife behind his back while talking to the Dark Urge). Even though he does seem to genuinely trust his lover by Act 2, he will still lie to them several times. He lies about being fine with the drow twins (he states he’ll leave if he hates if but never does despite disassociating), feigns confidence when the player says they’ll become a mind flayer (he says he only cares about them becoming ugly but expresses his true fears only after the fight, that he’s worried they are no longer the person he fell in love with by losing their soul), he manipulates his lover when confronting Cazador despite being conflicted about it himself and wanting reassurance, and (on a more minor note) he continuously claims he’s doesn’t care about Yenna or the Gur children despite getting upset when they’re in danger. This is a character who, even after he kills his tormentor, struggles to be honest with his partner. That isn’t a good combination when addressing poly. (Again, it could be worked through in real life, but is better avoided in video games where there isn’t time to address it).
  6. There are also plenty of situations where he agrees to do things he outright hates. In Act 1, we know he is (at least somewhat) disgusted by having sex with the player or Laezel, but he’ll do it. In Act 2, he tries to be genuine about not wanting to touch the player until he no longer feels disgust, but if the player pressures him, he will cave and obey. He does break up with the player afterwards, but it is only after he has gone through with the act. In Act 3, he will state three times that he doesn’t want to take the tadpole, but if the player pressures him by bringing up his darkest fear, he will give in. Worse, he will give in and STILL stay with the player romantically despite them clearly manipulating him to do something they know he fears. He does thankfully break up if you fail the checks, but if you succeed, he goes through with it. If he’s willing to cave to something as huge as altering his entire body, it makes sense that he would cave to something he views as more minor (like tolerating unwanted sexual acts in a brothel or sharing his partner).
  7. I didn’t know this until I saw others mention it but there are points where he will flirt with NPCs if he is single (the girl in the sewers), but he uses neutral dialogue if he is dating the player. This reinforces the theory that he doesn’t actually plan to sleep around or be with others as he claims (though there are some dialogues that I think slipped through the cracks where he still flirts with others despite being in a committed relationship).
  8. If Halsin propositions you after Cazador has been killed, Astarion no longer asks if you’re doing this because he hasn’t been fulfilling your sexual needs. However, he does give another response that feels out of place: “I’ve realized it doesn’t matter if anything (in our relationship) changes.” Parallel this with what he said at the graveyard, that “no matter what happens, I don’t want to lose this (relationship).” It’s very odd to have him say he doesn’t want to lose the relationship, but then the next day he is totally okay with losing it. Granted, it is nice to know that even if the characters break up, he’ll be fine, but it does feel contradictory for his character, especially with how devastated he acts if they DO end the relationship. If the Halsin statement is just an act and he’s overcompensating, however, then it feels more intentional on the writer’s part.
  9. I’ve seen lots of people say that Ascended Astarion also shouldn’t be fine with poly, and I agree, though it’s for different reasons than Spawn Astarion. Unlike SA, I think Ascended would absolutely do the brothel scene because 1. He’s actively suppressing his trauma and playing a new character and 2. He feels in control in the brothel and is the focus. However, with Halsin, he doesn’t have any control. For someone obsessed with possessing his lover and ensuring they can never leave him, letting them sleep with Halsin doesn’t fit his writing. He isn’t participating. He doesn’t know what they’re doing behind his back. For all he knows, Halsin and the player might be discussing how to kill Astarion or escape him. In some deleted party banter, Halsin literally tells Ascended Astarion he doesn’t approve of the abusive spawn/master relationship they’ve formed. With that knowledge, not only should Halsin not be willing to join a poly relationship that he thinks is unhealthy, but he has a motivation to help the player get away from AA (and AA would know this). I could see Spawn Astarion hesitantly agreeing to the Halsin thing despite not wanting to share, but AA just wouldn’t. It feels contrary to both his and Halsin’s writing.
  10. This is the second most convincing piece of evidence for me: The Drow twins. If you ask Astarion to join a ‘group activity’, he’ll use his fake voice and flighty laugh and agree to go through it, saying he’ll run away if he doesn’t like it and comparing the act to burning in the sun (a little concerning that he’s already comparing the two). Then during the act, he will immediately ask the player what they want “us” to do. Not only is he lumping himself in with the prostitutes, but he is also doing something that an Origin playthrough reveals is a trigger for him (he tells the drow twins that being ‘told what to do’ reminds him of his time as a slave). If the player tries to check up on him, he ignores them and says he wishes he was drunk. Then he disassociates and never brings it up again. This has been viewed two ways: either he doesn’t want to have casual sex anymore and wants to be in a one-on-one relationship, or he does want to do stuff like this but just needs to heal more before he can. I lean toward the first assumption because he is acting flighty and fake BEFORE the sexual act even begins. If he really wanted to do it but changed his mind after, it makes more sense for him to sound genuine at first, then fake halfway through.
But the main thing that sticks out to me is his reaction to you asking for only ONE drow twin. If you do, he will accuse you of having a thing for prostitutes and call it embarrassing, then glare at you for the rest of the conversation. This is especially sad because not only have the player’s actions made him feel like a prostitute again, but now he seems to be wondering if you started dating him BECAUSE he was a prostitute, not for who he really is.
Compare this to the Halsin situation and the drow ‘group activity’. For Halsin, he says he was expecting this for months. He’s had several months to plan his reaction and decide what he’s willing to tolerate. Hence, he has a very rehearsed reaction. With the twins, he had less time to anticipate this but probably also worried about it (especially if the player asked about them earlier and he said no. Now he expects the player to try again and has planned accordingly). Again, this response feels rehearsed and fake. The only response where he uses his real voice is when you ask for one of the twins alone. This is something he likely wouldn’t plan for, so we get to see his gut reaction for the first time: he doesn’t want you to do it.
Now some people argue that he’s fine with Halsin and not the other Origin characters because Halsin is just a fling and won’t try to take his spot. If that’s the case, he should be fine with the twins too. If anything, they are even less of a threat. Yet he doesn’t want you to do it and responds accordingly. If he truly was poly, he would respond like Karlach did and tell you to have fun, or like Shadowheart telling you to give him a heads up first. But we don’t see that.
One other thing about the twins that I felt I could point out: if you or the twins ask to do a group activity before Cazador is killed, Astarion says he’s not comfortable with this yet. The “yet” part has been pointed out to show that he’s fine with it after Cazador has been killed (even though he still disassociates later). However, another explanation of the “yet” part is that he’s trying to soften the blow because he’s scared of using a blunt NO. We see this with Araj, the blood merchant. Even though he is absolutely disgusted with her treatment of him and how she’s “defiling” him with her fantasies, his rejections of her are very soft and nervous. Even when reinforced by his friend/lover, he says “It’s still a no, I’m afraid” with a smile. Turning down sexual encounters is tough for him, even when he has people backing him up, so I can see him using words like “yet” or “I’m afraid” to soften the blow. I know several people in real life who do this, despite later admitting there was no “yet”.
There’s another part of this dialogue with the early twins that I want to point out (really overanalyzing here but if we want to believe the writers do things intentionally/with a lot of forethought, I think it’s okay to read into the words they use). When Astarion says he’s not comfortable with the twins, the player’s response is “I wouldn’t ask such a thing of you”. This will raise his approval and make him respond positively. The promise you give him is not “I’ll ask them later, after we’ve killed Cazador” or “I would have liked to but okay” (that one doesn’t trigger his positive response). He only approves of you saying you won’t ask him to do things like this (stated in a tense that implies you will NEVER ask him to do such a thing, regardless of Cazador’s stabbed or unstabbed state). This could have been the writer hinting that if you bring him back after, you’re going back on your promise and thus have to see the disassociating scene. That…or the writer wasn’t thinking too hard and we are simply thinking too much.
  1. With all that out of the way, we’ll get to the final point that solidifies this theory for me personally. It’s the statements of Shadowheart and Minthara if you ask to do a three-way relationship with one of them and Astarion. Shadowheart’s response is: “I think you’re overestimating his willingness to share. He may seem like a carefree hedonist, but there’s something fragile beneath the façade.” Minthara says something nearly identical, that sharing would wound his pride and he is far too fragile to handle it. You could even add Astarion’s line from the other end, where if you ask Astarion to share with you and Karlach, he will say they shouldn’t because Karlach loves the player and relationships are fragile (implying that he either thinks open relationships don’t work if there’s love involved, or perhaps he himself can only do open relationships if he doesn’t love the other person).
The main argument I’ve seen disproving these statements by Shadowheart and Minthara is that they’re just plain wrong about him. If so, it’s a strange writing choice to not only have both of them be wrong about the exact same thing, but they’re both high wisdom characters who are proven to understand Astarion in a lot of ways other characters don’t. (All three of them have been enslaved and manipulated, Minthara comprehends the depths of his relationship with Cazador within minutes of being in the camp, and Shadowheart is one of the closest to Astarion in terms of friendship and liking him.)
If Astarion actually is fine with poly, then it means both Shadowheart and Minthara are wrong. That means the writers either made a mistake or made a very weird writing choice.
However, if Astarion is actually pretending to be fine with sharing as they say, not only is the writing consistent but these dialogues become very clever foreshadowing. I want to give the writers the benefit of the doubt and believe they did a good job with Astarion, so I prefer to lean into the theory that he’s pretending because it makes more sense for him overall.
That was quite a long tangent and somewhat unnecessary, but he’s a character whose mannerisms and statements are meant to be heavily analyzed, so it’s fun to go more in depth. Let’s move on.
  1. ISSUES WITH HOW HALSIN WAS PRESENTED
We’re finally at the last point, and in a way the direct cause of this entire thread: Halsin. Now, I have no issue with Halsin being poly (again, he’s listed as one of my four ideal options for it) but I do have several issues with how he was written and presented. The Shadowheart part I will skip over because I already got into it, but there are many other problems to address and most of them could have been fixed very easily.
  1. He is not presented as poly until Act 3. I was reading through a thread full of people who loved him and several of them were early access players who had requested he become a romance option. However, the reason they requested him was very important. In EA, all three of the male options seemed immature (Wyll), condescending (Gale), or straight up evil (Astarion). Meanwhile Halsin was, in their words, a mature man who seems like the type to settle down with them in a cottage and help raise their kids. This is the impression he gives and what drew many people to him. As a result, many of these players were extremely disappointed to reach Act 3 once the game was out and discover that not only was he the complete opposite of their initial impression, but he won’t even stay with the player after the game ends (in most cases). Honestly, if I was a developer and saw that they liked him for those earlier reasons, I wouldn’t make him strictly poly because that wasn’t what the players wanted. They wanted him because he was muscular and a good, stable man. It was a very odd choice to turn around and give the players the opposite of what they asked for. But if the devs were truly determined to go the poly route, they should have at least gone back to Act 1 and 2 and slipped in some hints that he was poly. I saw some newer players who recently played the game for the first time and wanted to romance him for the aforementioned reasons (stable, mature, kind, huge). They ignored all other romances until Act 3, then got hit with the “I’m only poly” discussion. Had they known he wasn’t monogamous, they wouldn’t have blown off all the other options.
  2. But let’s ignore that. We’re focusing on the world where he IS completely poly (though some were arguing that it should at least be an option to ask if he’ll try being monogamous with the player.) The way he is presented still has a lot of issues according to poly players. For one, the way he tries to butt in on the relationship is done in a really sketchy manner (especially considering what some of the Origin characters have gone through/are currently going through). It would have been far better to do what they did with Minsc and give the PLAYER the option to hit on Halsin, rather than the other way around. Have them offer poly to him, and then he can discuss it from there. Having the proposition come from Halsin himself puts him in a negative light, and it’s pretty clear the writers didn’t actually want to portray him as a bad person so they messed up here.
  3. The flagging for Halsin’s dialogues is awful and despite seeing people report it for eight months, that hasn’t changed. Even if you pick the most neutral option, he will still hit on you by saying “I think you feel the same way”. Not a good idea. “I HOPE you feel the same way” would have been infinitely better. Women often have to deal with people assuming their friendly, professional conversation is something more when it isn’t. It’s not a great idea to bring that into fantasy games too. It hit too close to home for some.
  4. Even if you use the most neutral option at the Act 1 party (“Go have fun and mingle”), your main dialogue option the next day is “Sorry for coming on so strong last night”. It’s a strange thing to say. Again, I’m not sure how developers missed this and why it was never patched out. I saw people reporting it since the release.
  5. He will also ask for a relationship at neutral approval. In most of my playthroughs, I stopped talking to him beyond the Thaniel quest and avoided asking about his personal life. He still led his proposition with “I think you feel the same way”. How does he know when we only spoke to him three times? They should have at least required you to go through all his extra dialogues before triggering this.
  6. When Halsin says he loves you, you have two options: reject him straight away, or ask about his opinions a little more. Oddly enough, if you ask a bit more and THEN reject him, he’ll have a proper response. “That’s fine. I understand. I won’t ask again.” However, if you reject him as soon as he starts talking to you, his response is very off putting. He’ll protest and say, “but you asked me about my former lovers” or, if you didn’t even do that, he’ll claim “you looked after me with the care of a lover, not a host.” These pushy assumptions turned a lot of people off. This is entirely on the writer, in my opinion. He should have realized how weird these sounded.
  7. Halsin is the only person you can’t dismiss from your camp at any point through dialogue. All of the origins have to be pursued and recruited intentionally. Halsin is the only exception. This makes some sense because you need him to cure the Shadowlands, but for Act 3, he literally has nothing to do. They should have given players an option after the Ketheric fight to dismiss him and tell him to take care of the Shadowlands. It makes a lot more sense narratively and would help avoid a lot of the more awkward parts later.
  8. Halsin’s initial dialogue about monogamy vs. polyamory is mostly fine, with him comparing it to gardens and wolves vs. bears. But (and don’t quote me on this because I can’t recall the specifics), if you ask your partner to do poly and they say no, Halsin will be a little more judgmental about your partner, saying he was hoping they would be more “open minded”. Statistically, the majority of BG3’s players are going to be monogamous, so it’s strange to see nearly every character (monogamous or poly) criticize monogamy in some way. It is called selfish, narrow minded, and old fashioned by at least 3 characters to my knowledge (Halsin, Act 1 Astarion, and even Gale (who is monogamous himself)). If the developers truly wanted to be inclusive, criticizing one’s lifestyle and having no characters openly defend it in the game (even those who practice it) is a disappointing choice. In this case, it might be an unintentional mistake (maybe they feared that by defending monogamy, they were somehow demonizing polygamy or polyamory), but it would have been better to just leave the criticisms out of it entirely if that was the case.
And that’s it. I think that’s all the points from myself and others that I wanted to compile. I don’t think any of this will be changed in BG3 but I hope all of these points and opinions will at least improve any future games. It’s great that BG3 was able to make nuanced characters with their own opinions and preferences—I much prefer it to “everyone is poly and no one gets mad if you cheat” games where characters feel more like statues than living beings—but I do wish they thought the poly options through more carefully (trying to make poly people comfortable while leaving room for monogamous players to enjoy the romances too).
The only feasible fix the developers could make at this point to avoid all the issues mentioned is keeping Halsin poly but removing his connections to other Origin romances (or at least Karlach and Astarion). At this point, that’s the only thing that could realistically be done. I also wish they made characters break up with you if you cheat on them in the brothel, since that’s what many people including myself would do.
Again, these opinions are my own (and those that aren’t come from a variety of comments across Youtube, Reddit, and Larian’s forums). I enjoyed getting to see so many different viewpoints and appreciated how civil (most of) the people on both sides were. It’s an interesting topic and here’s hoping game studios handle it better in the future.

⚠️ Attention all traders and holders of Chinese stocks: You should read this if you don’t know what a VIE is. Sure, most of you will be repelled by the great wall of text here (so many words!), but you might want to keep this post nearby.
Hello. You are aware that Wall Street’s bustling bazaar hosts a veritable Forbidden City of Chinese companies draped in ticker tape rather than silk. Today, I will provide background and data on all allowed Chinese companies listed on three of the largest U.S. stock exchanges: New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Nasdaq, and NYSE American.
I should note that a bustling troupe of 26 national securities exchanges are registered with the SEC in the United States. Most are owned by the Nasdaq, NYSE, or the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE).
Nonetheless, based on data from the World Federation of Exchanges as of August 2023, the NYSE and Nasdaq were the top two exchanges behemoths of the global financial stage, accounting for 42.4% of the total $110.2 trillion in valuation traded across 80 major global exchanges.
🖼️ I had a photo of Wall Street to add here, but I'm only allowed to include one attachment.
2022 vs. 2023
According to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, as of January 8, 2024, there were 265 Chinese companies listed on the three U.S. exchanges, with a total market capitalization of $848 billion. That valuation is down from a year prior—January 9, 2023—when a slightly lower 252 Chinese companies were tracked, but they represented a total market capitalization of $1.03 trillion.
Since January 2023, 24 Chinese companies have entered the spotlight of the three U.S. exchanges, raising $656 million in combined initial public offerings (IPOs). On the other hand, eleven Chinese companies have folded their tents and delisted.
China Securities Regulatory Commission
The American stock exchanges witnessed a springtime bloom of Chinese IPOs in the first quarter of 2023. However, this listing activity came to an abrupt halt as the clock struck March 31, 2023.
Why? The China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) implemented a revised approval process for companies going public overseas.
I won’t get into the details, but China has rules to cap foreign investment and ownership in sectors deemed strategic, such as technology. In the past, those regulations have driven several Chinese firms to the legal gymnastics of a Variable Interest Entity (VIE) structure—a clever contrivance that allowed them to leapfrog domestic constraints.
However, under the revised review mechanism, every company, regardless of its corporate ownership structure, must now bow before the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) to register its intent to list overseas.
🖼️ I had a photo of the CSRC building to add here, but I'm only allowed to include one attachment.
The gatekeeper
Therefore, although the CSRC touted this regulation as a necessary measure for enforcing regulatory compliance and preventing fraud (which is true), it also helps regulators act as gatekeepers poised to block any proposed listing they deem poses a risk to their national security or jeopardizes China's national interests.
This process is wide-ranging. For instance, it includes an evaluation of the company’s safeguards against disclosing what the Chinese Communist Party considers potential state secrets. But we’re not talking about top-secret black-ops projects meant to be hidden from international oversight committees. No… any company that collects personal information on more than one million users requires stern data security review mechanisms for its cross-border data flows.
For perspective, TikTok has over 150 million users in the U.S. alone and is not subject to the same scrutiny from the Western nations.
Currently, the CSRC approval process is reportedly taking upward of six months.
Audit inspections and investigations in China
You’re probably unaware of the HFCAA, so let’s start there.
The Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act of 2020 (HFCAA) is a law that requires companies publicly listed on stock exchanges in the U.S. to disclose to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) information on foreign jurisdictions that prevent the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) from conducting inspections.
That law laid down a stern ultimatum: If Chinese authorities kept obstructing the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) from inspecting audit firms in China or Hong Kong for three consecutive years, the companies audited by these entities would face a ban from the bustling arenas of the U.S. exchanges.
Basically, either China allowed the PCAOB to inspect the audit firms, or the companies had to change to another auditing firm within three years.
Then, as 2022 waned to its final days (literally, on December 29), President Joe Biden signed a Consolidated Appropriations Act, which contained a provision that will tighten the noose, shortening future timelines from three consecutive years to only two.
Once they looked under the rock
Finally allowed to conduct full investigations of audit firms in mainland China and Hong Kong after over a decade of obstruction, the PCAOB announced the findings of its first round of inspections in May 2023, identifying deficiencies in seven of eight audits conducted by the auditing firms KPMG Huazhen and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Hong Kong. Audits of Chinese Companies Are Highly Deficient, U.S. Regulator Says
On November 30, 2023, the PCAOB announced fines against three audit firms in China, totaling $7.9 million for misconduct. For perspective, that number included the second and third-largest fines ever doled out by the PCAOB.
Why were the fines so bad?
Those sneaky Chinese accountants
Imagine a gaggle of accountants in the far reaches of PwC China and Hong Kong applying for a U.S. auditing curriculum. But alas, these foreign accountants find the U.S. auditing training tests a trifle tedious, so someone came up with the answers and decided to pass them around like a secret note in a schoolroom.
From 2018 to 2020, over 1,000 of these busy bees completed their U.S. auditing online exams by copying the answers from two unauthorized apps with a fervor that would make a gossip columnist blush.
When confronted with the evidence, PwC China and PwC Hong Kong response: 🤷‍♂️
And let me remind you, this happened late last year. Both firms are expected to provide reasonable assurance that their personnel will act with integrity in connection with internal training and to report their compliance to the PCAOB within 150 days—April 2024.
🖼️ I was planning on using an AI-generated image of Chinese accountants cheating, but I'm only allowed to include one attachment.
State-owned enterprises
According to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, this graph represents the total market capitalization of Chinese companies listed in the three U.S. exchanges.
Market Capitalization of Listed Chinese Companies
The number of listed companies has stayed at around 260. However, all Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs) have delisted themselves from U.S. exchanges, most of them soon after the PCAOB announced it had secured complete access to Chinese auditors’ records.
Variable Interest Entities (VIEs)
Most traders—and that means you—are unaware that 166 Chinese companies currently listed on the three major U.S. exchanges use a VIE structure.
As of January 8, 2024, these companies have a market capitalization of $772 billion. For perspective, that represents 91% of the total market capitalization of all the Chinese firms listed on the three major U.S. exchanges.
What the hell is a VIE?
It is a complex corporate structure that grants shareholders contractual claims to control via an offshore shell company without transferring actual ownership in the company.
A Variable Interest Entity (VIE) is a bit like a riverboat casino’s cleverest trick, allowing a company to sell its chips on a foreign table without ever letting the players hold the cards directly.
A VIE is a structure used primarily by companies that wish to partake in the financial streams of another country (the U.S. exchanges) without breaking local laws (Chinese laws) that prevent full ownership.
Remember, Chinese companies structured themselves as VIEs to circumvent China’s restrictions—not U.S. restrictions—on foreign ownership in industries the CCP deems sensitive.
Therefore, when you hold stock in one of these Chinese companies, you’re not officially holding any actual ownership in the company. Because if you did, then that company could be breaking Chinese restrictive caps on foreign investment and ownership.
That’s why they set up a façade, or a legal entity, that controls the business on paper, but the true power and profits are funneled back to the company pulling the strings.
Granted, it’s not as shaky as asking a random stranger to hold your shares, but it is crafty, and you should be aware of the risks.
Wait. What are the risks?
You need to understand that there’s a shadow of potential risk looming. Potential. Now, don't mistake me for the town crier of doom; I'm not proclaiming that the sky is falling on these shares. Nor am I declaring that disaster is certain for Chinese stocks.
What I am pointing out, however, is the presence of a risk—a subtle beast that might just catch you off guard if you remain unaware.
And let’s face it: Most of you are completely oblivious to these issues.
There are two sides here: 🇺🇸 & 🇨🇳
🇺🇸
Since July 2021, the SEC has imposed additional disclosure requirements for Chinese companies using a VIE to sell shares in the U.S. These requirements include greater transparency about the relationship between the VIE and its Chinese operating companies.
In summary, the SEC aims to push VIEs toward the company behind them to offer more clarity on U.S. investor ownership in the Chinese operating company.
🇨🇳
On the other side, Chinese companies that list overseas using a VIE were not required to register their listings with the CSRC, as the VIE is not considered a Chinese company under China’s law. This is the reason VIEs were used in the first place.
However, as I mentioned earlier, after March 31, 2023, the CSRC established requirements for all new Chinese companies to register and receive permission before going public overseas—even those planning to use VIE structures. That’s why there was a boom of Chinese IPOs before that deadline.
Granted, on September 14, 2023, a Chinese auto insurance platform became the first company that received the elusive blessing of the CSRC to list, and it did so using a VIE arrangement, breaking the long, dry spell that had plagued Chinese IPOs when she listed on the Nasdaq four days later.
However, even though VIEs received some sort of recognition from the CSRC, the VIE corporate structures still hold dubious legal status under China’s laws. Remember, VIEs purpose is to avoid being considered a Chinese company under China’s laws.
So… do you see the potential risk here?
Umm… No, I don’t get it.
Think about it. Either country could potentially increase regulations for VIEs, but if the SEC forces them to be more transparent, the VIE would not be able to circumvent China’s restrictions. That’s one risk.
Also, at some point, China’s CSRC might question whether it’s appropriate to recognize a corporate structure that was created to circumvent its laws.
Which leads me to this: What’s keeping the CCP from deciding to start reigning in those VIEs?
The answer is simple: They’re not in a hurry to do so because if misfortune should befall, it’ll be the foreign investors who’ll see their assets deflated like a punctured balloon.
🖼️ I would've added a nice image or two by now, to balance all the text and make this more appealing, but I'm only allowed to include one attachment.
If a VIE-listed company goes private at a lower valuation, businesses fail, or there’s a valuation discrepancy, the enforceability of a VIE’s contractual arrangements is unproven in Chinese courts. With VIE-listed companies, foreign investors’ recourse in the Chinese legal system is as elusive as a catfish’s whisper.
Yeah, but that’s unlikely…
Sure. Of course, I’m not saying every Chinese stock will have these issues. But it can happen. And it has happened.
The unlucky case of Luckin Coffee
Due to the lack of compliance with international audit inspections, Chinese corporate financial statements’ reliability for valuation and investment is not assured.
Such is the case of Luckin Coffee. In a bold bid to capture Wall Street’s hearts and wallets, Luckin Coffee showed up dressed in finery, flaunting alluring figures of revenue, operations, and bustling customer traffic.
At her grand debut, the stock sashayed onto the Nasdaq at $17, swirling up a storm of interested buyers to the tune of $561 million in capital.
For a fleeting moment, Luckin shimmered like a star over the financial firmament, boasting a market capitalization that soared to a heady $12 billion, with shares peaking just over $50.
Ah, but as the adage goes, ‘Truth will out.’ And out it came—the revelation of those embroidered numbers caused the company's stock to plummet like a stone tossed from a bridge, leaving a wake of investor losses and culminating in a disgraceful delisting from Nasdaq 13 months after her debut. Luckin Coffee Drops Nasdaq Appeal; Shares to Be Delisted
🖼️ I would've added an AI-generated image of a cup of Luckin Coffee jumping from a bridge, but I'm only allowed to include one attachment.
Well… but that won’t happen to me…
Uh-huh. On April 2, 2020, after announcing that employees—including its chief operating officer—falsified 2.2 billion yuan (about $310 million) in sales throughout 2019, Luckin's shares nosedived -80%.
This is from one of you unluckin bastards: I've lost 240k on Luckin Coffee, all my life savings. Now I'm broke af.
I’m sure many of you might reckon yourselves immune to a similar debacle since you think you’re smart enough to use stops to escape any runaway losses. It's time to wake up and smell the Luckin coffee. Chinese news catalysts often strike like lightning at night, and the stops you set under the sun cannot shield you from storms that explode in the moonlight. Dumbass.
Chinese regulators can be mercurial
Even though the PCAOB is currently able to perform its oversight responsibilities, concerns remain around the possibility that Chinese regulators might backtrack, potentially clamping down once again on the PCAOB's ability to access audit firms and personnel across mainland China and Hong Kong.
If that happens, the PCAOB can quickly declare a negative determination. HOWEVER, this action would only start the countdown under the HFCAA, giving U.S.-listed Chinese companies a window of TWO years to secure services from an auditor in a compliant jurisdiction or face a trading ban. That’s it.
Of course, within that time, Chinese regulators could agree once again to allow access to the PCAOB, thus resetting the two-year countdown without significant consequences.
What lurks in the shadows
Although the risk of PCAOB non-compliance looms over these financial engagements, it is the ghost of potentially misconstrued—or, let's say, creatively presented—earnings reports coming to light that should scare you most. Or, on the flip side, present the biggest opportunity.
I believe it is possible that there are several ghosts out there—ghastly financial figures dressed up a tad too finely—lingering in the shadows, unchecked and unchallenged. If they’re found and unveiled under the harsh spotlight of scrutiny, the fallout would be immediate and severe, leaving investors scrambling.
And if that happens, it’s not about diamond-holding through the plunge since the company might opt (or be forced) to delist from the U.S. exchanges.
🖼️ I would've added an AI-generated image of an attractive young Chinese ghost woman, implying both the allure of Chinese stocks, but also the risk of getting closer. However, I'm only allowed to include one attachment.
You need to understand a crucial concept. Many traders believe that if a company messes up, plunges, and gets delisted, it means the company is basically over—dead. But that’s not the case here. A delisting does not equal death.
I mean, Luckin Coffee is still out there, alive and kicking.
16,218 stores and counting, covering 240+ cities across China.
You would think that a company like that would not be able to cheat on its balance sheet. Yeah, just like you would think PwC China would notice 1,000 accountants cheated their way through the U.S. auditing curriculum.
🖼️ I would've added an AI-generated image of a Chinese accountant dabbing like a boss for getting his cheated accounting diploma, but I'm only allowed to include one attachment.
So… is it too far-fetched to believe more ghosts might come to light, now that the PCAOB can supervise the numbers?
I mentioned a flip side since you could specialize in tracking everything the PCAOB does. If you can get a whiff about increased auditing on a certain company, you might decide to play a short position in anticipation of a potential ghost coming to light. Be warned, though, that it’s not as if they tweet out which companies they’re auditing.
If I were to do it, I would research and join whatever digital saloon young Chinese ledger-keepers convene in. Perhaps I’d stumble upon a post by SumYungGuy or another pleading for advice on how to parley with the PCAOB Laowai making a fuss over his figures. The poor lad's in a pickle, you see, since he cheated the exam and doesn’t know squat.
Methodology
For the purposes of this table, a company is considered Chinese if:
  1. It has been identified as being from the PRC (the People's Republic of China) by the relevant stock exchange;
  2. It lists a PRC address as its principal executive office in filings with the SEC; or
  3. It has a majority of operations in the PRC, including a company structured offshore but whose value is ultimately tied through a relationship in the PRC.
⚠️ Some Chinese companies that use offshore corporate entities hide or do not identify their primary Chinese corporate domicile in their listing information. This complicates tracing, making it difficult to guarantee that this list captures all Chinese companies registered offshore.
I should also point out that this list does not include companies domiciled exclusively in Hong Kong or Macau.
⚠️ Remember, this list only considers Chinese companies listed on three of the largest U.S. stock exchanges: New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Nasdaq, and NYSE American.
Oh, and btw, this isn’t a list I came up with. This info was compiled by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission. It’s their methodology and list.
Since the majority is a VIE, I’ve marked the ones that are not registered as a VIE with an asterisk (*). This is determined using the most recent annual report filed with the SEC. A company is judged to have a VIE if:
  1. It explicitly describes using a VIE to conduct all or part of its business operations in China, or
  2. It describes a subsidiary in which it has no direct equity interest but relies on contractual arrangements to exercise control and receive economic benefits from its operations in China.
⚠️ For companies that have been listed for less than a year, information contained in the company’s most recently updated investment prospectus, as filed with the SEC, is used instead.
Chinese companies listed on U.S. exchanges
Companies are arranged by the size of their current market capitalization. All companies utilize a VIE corporate structure, except those marked with an asterisk (*).

These are only 51 of the 261 Chinese companies currently listed on the major U.S. exchanges to comply with rule three. I kept the market cap minimum at $750M to allow for some wiggle room.
I mentioned earlier that the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission had 265 tickers, but that was on January 8, 2024. Since then, three companies have been acquired, and the other one has voluntarily delisted.
As you can confirm, the vast majority is structured as a VIE.
I was going to include charts to illustrate how several Chinese stocks—aside from the ones with the biggest market caps—tend to display sudden rallies, followed by after-hours reversals. It is important to recognize them, whether you want to capitalize on them, or avoid them entirely. But I can't add any more attachments, so...
Besides, it's unlikely that many of you have even read this far without images.
Have a good day.

2024.05.13 22:47 JustARandomDemigod Chapter 14

The next couple of hours were a blur. Percy knelt by Annabeth, holding her head close. The two of them sat in silence until Lily opened the door with a loud CREEAAK. “Hey.” She murmured. Her face was pale and sweaty, and she looked completely drained of energy. “Hey. You okay?” Annabeth said, taking Lily’s hand. “Shouldn’t I be asking you that?” Lily joked softly. “But yeah, I’m fine. Healing takes a lot of energy, and there are so many wounded. And… I feel so guilty that I couldn’t save Silena. I should’ve helped…” Lily broke off, running her hands through her hair. Annabeth pulled Lily so close Percy could see the green reflected in Annabeth‘s eyes. ”you listen here, Lily Jackson. Silena was a hero, and she knew she had to go down in this war-with the side she betrayed killing her. Silena wouldn’t have cheated death, Lily. She wasn’t that kind of person. You’ve already saved so many lives today-Ethan Nakamura, and all the other turned demigods. You’re a noble person, Lily. You did the right thing.” Annabeth pulled Lily into a tight hug. The sweet moment was forgotten hours later as Lily, Annabeth, Grover and Percy raced through Olympus, chasing Kronos to the throne room. “Stand down, Kronos! You’ll never leave Olympus alive! My father shall have your soul!” Lily yelled, her dagger in sword form. “Foolish girl! You should have accepted my offer while you had the chance.” Kronos growled, standing next to Zeus’s throne, flanked by two of his men. “But my plan has come to fall into place. Your body is better preserved than Luke Castellan’s. With the power of the gods, I shall rule the world.” Lily’s face faltered. “What?” Kronos turned to his men. “When I have control of the girl, kill this miserable boy.” Annabeth realised too late what was about to happen. As all twelve Olympians, plus Hades, burst into the throne room, Kronos’s soul dissipated into gold smoke and spiralled straight towards Lily’s chest.
Lily had never known such unbearable pain. Not even when she held the sky for almost a year straight. When Kronos hit her, she was knocked back flying into a stone alter. Kronos spoke in her mind, but she could hear it broadcasted around the throne room. “Give in, young hero. I am your master. I bend all time and space. I am the father of all. Would you not listen to your grandfather? I will care for your body and mind like your father nor mother ever did.“ Lily could see Hades flinch at those words.”When I am restored to my former glory, I would not dispose of you like Luke. You could serve at my right hand, with immortal fame and glory. We shall destroy the father who never cared for you. All it would take is your loyalty.” Lily could feel Kronos‘s words radiating through her body, willing her to give up and surrender to the lord of time. “No.” She growled. The gods stared at her. Annabeth, Percy and Grover stared at her. Kronos’s guards, still holding Luke, looked shocked. “NO?!” Kronos’s voice boomed around the throne room, echoing through all of Olympus. “No.” Lily gasped, writhing in pain. “You want my loyalty? Tough. It resides with the gods. They blessed me. They chose me. All you know is destruction, Kronos. A hunt without honour or reason is merely unrestricted, uncontrollable anger.“ Lily saw Artemis nod proudly in the corner of her eye. “Olympus to preserve or raze. Those are the final lines of the prophecy. Well, I’ve made my choice Kronos. I made my choice from the moment I heard the prophecy. Olympus will be preserved. And you-you shall be razed.” At that last word, Lily let out a terrifying scream- a scream so loud, so deafening, so powerful, that Lily could see the golden steam shoot out of her a shatter into a billion pieces. Lily sat up, shaking, and gazed at the shellshocked gods in front of her. “Well, that’s the show, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you and goodnight!” Then she promptly keeled over and fainted. Lily found herself lying on the floor of Olympus several hours later, with Artemis and Apollo standing over her. ”what... What happened..?” She murmured, trying to sit up. “Shh, child. Rest. You have done Olympus a great favour. You shall no doubt be rewarded. Your friends are mourning.” Lily shot up straight, ignoring her spinning head and the urge to faint again. “Mourning? Mourning who?” Artemis and Apollo exchanged glances, as if wondering what they should tell the young demigod. “The one whom you call Luke Castellan, the former host of Kronos.” Annabeth told Luke’s demise had been short. The second he regained Consciousness, he’d screamed, grabbed Annabeths dagger, and plunged it into his heart. Soon, they were called to the throne room. Annabeth was declared an architect. Grover became a lord of the wild. Percy declined immortality. But Lily was terrified for her turn. She stepped forward, and her father approached the throne of Zeus. “My daughter. You have done Olympus a great service. The greatest service. Holding the wrath of Kronos would have taken loyalty, commitment, and true effort. Henceforth, Lord Zeus sees it fitting for you to continue your education in Scotland.“ Lily gasped. “We would also like to grant you a place in the official theatre academy of Olympus, as you seem to be excelling at this topic in Scotland, being part of their plays and performances. Lily ran forward. Before anyone could say anything, Lily had her arms wrapped tightly around the Lord of the Dead. “Thank you, father.” She whispered into the souls of his robes. “I... I love you too, my girl.” He said quietly, and the throne room erupted into cheers.

2024.05.13 21:01 StrykerXion The Konami Code Conspiracy Uncovered

In a shocking turn of events, a group of rogue geneticists have stumbled upon what they believe to be the holy grail of human potential... a hidden Konami Code embedded deep within our DNA. According to leaked documents, this genetic cheat code is said to unlock incredible abilities, but with potentially hilarious and chaotic side effects. Imagine a world where a simple sequence of button presses could turn an ordinary person into a superhuman... or a walking meme.
The leaked research suggests the following potential effects:
Up, Up, Down, Down: Activates a "super jump" gene, granting incredible vertical leap. However, test subjects have reported a disturbing tendency towards spontaneous backflips and uncontrollable parkour urges.
Left, Right, Left, Right: Boosts coordination and reflexes to superhuman levels. Unfortunately, this also seems to trigger sudden outbreaks of impromptu breakdancing and an inexplicable desire to wear brightly colored tracksuits.
B, A: Unleashes raw, unbridled strength... but at the cost of emotional stability. Test subjects have exhibited Hulk-like rage, uncontrollable fits of laughter, and an alarming tendency to shout "Hadouken!" while throwing punches.
The choice is yours, dear Redditors. Would you take the risk and unlock your hidden potential, or would you play it safe and stick to button mashing on your controller?

2024.05.13 19:26 Crafter235 Implementing a genie into gameplay

For a pixel, top-down rpg I've been planning, I had the idea of a genre's lamp that's hard to find, due to trying to find its location and go through the gauntlet of a dunegeon. If rubbed, it will summon and all-powerful genie to grant you 3 wishes. Of course, because it could be game-breaking due to its might and power, it would be extremely difficult to find, and that's what would make it a reward (and limited wishes to not make it overpowered). However, I am trying to think of a way to implement the wish-making. Some ideas include:
What are some other ways to implement the power of a wish-making genie?

2024.05.13 17:47 empereur5358 I don’t think Krakoa was bad for Cyclops

Destroy me all you like in the comments, I accept my fate without apology.
What a lot of people tend to forget is, Cyclops hasn’t been the protagonist of the X-men in a very, very long time. Throughout Claremont’s run, it was clear that he felt Cyclops was a bit boring, and tried to retire him after the Phoenix saga with Pryor. He’s even stated that when editorial made him abandon Maddie for Jean, he hasn’t had a single positive opinion about the character. Storm was the real protagonist for like, 15 years (as much as anyone can be a protagonist in an ensemble series).
Scott got popular again in the 2010s, after Morrison’s run (when I started reading the comics), but still suffered under Wolverine’s cultural dominance. Bendis’ post-AvX run is what REALLY brought him back, because most readers agreed with his takeaways despite editorial trying to paint him as the bad guy.
I think as Cyclops fans, we can confuse the forest for the trees a little bit and assume Krakoa has done him really dirty - it hasn’t, not compared to the rest of his history. He got to stand by his principles, he went against the council and revealed the secrets of mutant resurrection, he was still Team leader for a lot of main-team missions and showed off his skills and competence.
Krakoa was about giving everyone the spotlight, and that’s one of the reasons I loved this era. Cyclops will always be there, but how often do we get Forge in a main team? Nightcrawler leading his own team? Karma, Pyro, Prodigy, Cypher - hell, even Warren? We don’t get those stories very often for a supposedly ensemble book.
I think we can give the writers a pass for having Scott be REALLY into the fact that he has a stable family unit for the first time 40 years. This is the most relaxed version of Cyclops I think we’ve ever gotten, because it’s the only time he’s ever genuinely not had to worry about having the deaths of the entire mutant community on his shoulders - that’s definitely character development.
(Granted, if you hated the stories where Cyclops didn’t show up as well as much as the ones where he did, well… I don’t have response to that. Yet.)
Edit: Alright, got my timelines mixed up everyone, so I will acknowledge the 2000s publicly here. I mistakenly thought that Morrison’s run got started in like, 2008, which was blatantly wrong. I associated the 2000s primarily with Scott’s cheating on Jean as his main arc, but Astonishing X-men did pull away from that in a desperate separation from how Morrison’s arc ended. At the same time, I maintain that it’s been a bit up and down for Scott’s importance. But yes, you are all correct, Scott was important for a while, but it doesn’t mean that he should be the most important all the time (my opinion).

I agree to your sentiment, but forming an administration such as this is in total legal power of the president. We may oppose these appointments in Congress, but as long the Patriots have the majority of confidence in the chambers, our voices are irrelevant. All we can hope is for moderacy to prevail.
The Speaker of the House and Senator Wanamaker has already voiced the totality of his support for the president’s selection. Mr. Hanly, we cannot expect us to be victorious in blocking this new cabinet, especially as public pressure demands of us approval for a functioning government. May you read the list aloud again?
For State, James Beauchamp Clark of Missouri. Treasury, Elihu Root of New York. War, Robert Broussard of Louisiana. Postmaster General, Robert Borden of Nova Scotia. Navy, George Chamberlain of Mississippi. Attorney General, Philander Knox of Pennsylvania. Interior, Jim Hogg of Texas. Sustenance, Moses Kinkaid of Dakota. Public Safety, Edward Carmack of Tennessee. Labor and Employment, George Westinghouse of Pennsylvania.
Never since the Barnum administration has a presidential administration been so clearly partisan. These men hold very extreme, reformist, and hawkish views, the country will veer very far off from what President Custer created.
chuckles, Alas, we can do nothing but do our work here in the House of Representatives. Perhaps, we should not fear this for now.
sighs, If that that is what your mind is speaking to you, then I cannot oppose it. After all, we are now partners in opposition.
The previous Custer administration had been marred by the Bryan-Russell rivalry which split the old presidential cabinet in pieces. It was custom that presidential cabinets be diverse in order to please either side of a political debate. As the old administration left, it was expected that a similar status-quo structure would be put in place to appease both hawkish hardliners and isolationist reformists, however the end result was far from that thought. The Chaffee administration was packed solely with so-called “ruffian” individuals, those who held interventionist, nationalist, social reformist, and near imperialistic philosophies. Cabinet members such as Champ Clark, Robert F. Broussard, Moses Kinkaid, and George Westinghouse were chosen due to their alignment with a ‘Chaffean’ belief. The more ‘reactionary’ members such as Vice President McClellan, Jim Hogg, George E. Chamberlain, and Edward Carmack still mostly held firm in their loyalty to the administration. The more ‘reformist’ column which included Elihu Root, Robert Borden, and Philander Knox, though more likely to be uncomfortable with the actions of the other cliques, still abided by the circle as a whole. Though terrifying for his political opponents, this powerful administration would be a blessing to the president himself, smoothing the path to get actions done.

The Great Axe
Upon the axing of the ‘bloated’ bureaucratic Custerite system, the government experienced the first surplus in budget in decades. These policies were mainly devised by the machinations of Secretary Elihu Root and Attorney General Philander Knox. Many of the departments and sub departments created by the old administration were either merged, reassigned, or eliminated entirely. Funds for government-instituted programs were reallocated into the economic restructuring and control funds, killing off many public programs.
Attorney General Knox took a much harder stance on monopolies and repealed many of the protections handed to them by the Custer administration. Working with Secretary Carmack, the monetary ventures of these companies were now monitored by Bureau of Public Safety, and often threatened government intervention if practices were not up to standard. To the dismay of many radical anti-monopolists, the administration refrained from breaking up these monopolies and they continued to grow their empires that spanned the entire country, only now with increased government surveillance. On the other hand, new policies empowered small business and funds were reallocated to support non-monopoly affiliated business. Though these small business finally did detach themselves from the shadow of monopolies, in many areas competition remained harsh of them as the larger and more wealthy corporations dominated consumers.
Secretary Knox at work
In an attempted to stir back competition, Congress passed the Roosevelt-Garfield Bill in May 1902, penned by Representative Theodore Roosevelt of New York and Senator James R. Garfield of Ohio. The bill capped the wealth and support received by regional wings of corporations in “designated developing areas”. Harsh fines and possible shutdowns were imposed to any that tried disobey or cheat the law. Domestic American business saw a more competitive landscape throughout the coming years, though the wealth gap between big and small business still widened.
The Prince of the World
In a recent news report posted in the Hartford Courant, an interview with esteemed writer and author Mark Twain in February of 1903 caught the attention of many. The interviewer asked Twain a question regarding his past comments about President Chaffee, “In less than 10 words, how would you describe the foreign policy of the president.”. Twain paused for a moment and responded, “Ambition to a near toxic degree.”. Twain coined the term “Chaffean Policy”, and his sentiments were shared by most of the President Chaffee’s critics in foreign policy.
Chaffee famously declared in his tantalizing second round campaign speech that he would find America’s place under the sun. To most, Chaffee would deliver on that promise in a mere few years. America would achieve these feats quick and ambitiously. The American military occupation of Fujian Province and its establishment as part of the American sphere of influence was a victory to those who sought to expand American prowess in the Fat East. The American intervention to support the Filipino republics against the Germans who acquired the Spanish Philippines empowered the anti-German nationalists. The incidents at Manchuria and the souring of Russo-American relations bowed in favor of those who saw the Russians as autocratic tyrants. The establishment of American representation and interests in the Congo General Administration pleased the African opportunists. The quashing of the protests in Bahia Blanca strengthened those who wished to expand influence in South America. The US even demanded that the Argentine protestors be harshly punished by the Argentine government, which stirred the country's public even more. All in all, one group was certainly ecstatic of foreign policy the new administration was veering towards, the nationalist-imperialists.
American-administered railway construction in the Congo General Administration
These policy gave Chaffee’s administration immense bi-partisan support from the imperialists of the political spectrum. After the US was able to negotiate with the Germans not to continue their conquest of the Philippine Islands, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge would praise the president’s policies in a speech. “Never before has America shined so brightly to all societies of the world. Each step we take, we walk closer to the golden throne of a perfect civilization. There we shall take our rightful place as Prince of the World, under the service of the Lord, our God and Christ the Savior.”. The President himself was consistent in his constant declares of “American Sovereignty” against the grand foes that seek to dismantle it. Though notoriously less rambunctious and outgoing than his predecessor, Chaffee’s rare appearances gained much fanfare to his supporters, especially if he spoke out directly to them. The opposition continued to oppose these policies, the radicals and anti-imperialists joining forces to counteract the nationalist machine. Representative Hiram Johnson would try to push for an impeachment for Secretary Carmack, due to his actions in Bahia Blanca that led thousands deported, though his efforts fell flat. To the wider public, imperialism was either a non-concern or a broad support. A majority of American would not oppose these policies, most of them saying it was for the betterment of American prestige and international power.
Mass deportation of Argentine war immigrants back to Argentina
With fears that a possible conflict may stir up between the US and any other nation, Chaffee ordered Secretary of War Broussard and the War Department to hastily prepare a last resort war plans in case of war with every single major power in the world stage. Acknowledge the gargantuan task of defeating any major powers, the war plans describes very desperate and depraved tactics, such as using chemical warfare and bombarding international shipping. The plans would also describe the spoils of war that the US would seize if they were the win against their foes. Broussard's plans were kept top secret and never showed publicly, though many rumors got out and spread throughout the rooms of lawmakers, however those rumors was mostly either dismissed or sidelined by the general public and basically unknown to the rest of the world.
The Disobedient Son
While feelings of American expansionism were warm at home, abroad it utterly enraged many. In a golden room in a place in Berlin, Philipp, Prince of Eulenberg, after his meeting with George von Lengerke Meyer regarding the Philippines, told Vice Chancellor Arthur von Posadowsky-Wehner, “Americans are a brash and egomaniacal people. Always seeking glory, but never willing to sacrifice. Their great leaders of old, Hancock, Clay, Hale, would weep at the sight of this nation that stands before us.”.
The Kaiserreich was increasingly growing ambitious and hostile policy in the world stage. Along with her ally, the British Empire, they counterbalanced the Franco-Russian Entente for supremacy on the world stage. Woes for a conflict were already brewing in Europe. In the German-aligned Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia (informally the Kingdom of Illryia), tension was growing with the Russophile Balkan-Slavic intelligentsia and the German ruling class, reigned by Bernhard von Saxe-Meiningen, or by his regal name King Konstantin I. A military arms race between the French and the Germans continues to flare up as both vie to be the premier continental power. The Germans would still hold claim the mostly ethnically and linguistically German Rhineland, which had been handed to the French after the Napoleonic Wars. The British and the French would compete for their massive colonial empires, seeking to establish dominance as the greatest empire in history. It didn’t help that Secretary of State Clark openly denounced the “colonial competition” of the French and the British, saying it put global peace in jeopardy. Clark sent multiple letters to UK Prime Ministers Robert Gascoyne-Cecil and Charles Spencer denouncing the UK’s policy of “encroachment”, stating that wherever the French sought to spread influence, the British would follow.
The Franco-British \"Great Game\" would distract both governments from fully decrying the US
The United States would be viewed as a bumbling yet dangerously ambitious nation, one that the Germans sought to keep passive and behaved. The US had aligned neither with the Franco-Russian nor the Anglo-German alliance, historically holding a famed neutral stance in global squabbles. However as President Chaffee’s more hawkish foreign policy began to soar the US above what the foreign empires expected, those nations began to antagonize the Americans. Even the French, who have a merely professionally lukewarm relationship with the US, began to get anxious. French Prime Minister Georges Picquart would describe the American foreign policy as “…inherently hostile to all non-Americans.”. Though no foreign nation would threaten military action against the US, the sentiments established would lead to many nations seeking American to stay put during foreign affairs. The Argentine public particularly had a rabid distain for the US. After their loss in the war, Argentina would suffer crippling economic conditions, further exacerbated by their political divisions and lack of national confidence. The new Argentine president sought to rebound relations with the US, which angered many of the populace who demanded to cut off relations from their former foe. The growing hostility of these nations was apparent to many in the government, though their reactions were muted and unenthusiastic. Most simply shrugged this concern off as unimportant. Senator Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., recently appointed to the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, would state “The hostility and discrediting from foreign governments against the United States is matters that that foreign government solely has dictation over. Our government has no command over that they may say or do.” Holmes' address was met with cheers from the chambers.
The things he allows...
The first Chaffee cabinet would be one of the most politically powerful and influential administrations in American history. Coordinating excessive actions such as the expulsion of all Argentine immigrants, the grand “War on Crime”, the exaltation of the Hancockian Corps, and the detachment from the gold standard to fiat currency. Secretary of Labor and Employment Westinghouse moved ambitious yet business-friendly employment policies. Westinghouse imposed many policies that benefited the technological sector of the market, and many technological feats were aided by and complete by Westinghouse’s investments. Westinghouse’s company went beyond electricity and aided in the creation of groundbreaking inventions. Such as the “Whirl-craft”, the first American flying helicopter in 1903. Westinghouse would be a common figure of criticism by opponents. As the Housing Crisis continued and the costs of housing continued to be high, Westinghouse’s department was criticized in their inaction. Many saw that it was Westinghouse’s job to combat the issue, yet he did little to address the problem.
Secretary Westinghouse was a patron of rapid technological advancement
Secretary of Sustenance Kinkaid helped to imposed the “Market-by-Market” system. The government would classify a business based on their productivity, general environment, and profits. With the data collected, they get classified as either THRIVING, COMFORTABLE, or IN JEOPARDY. Based on their classification, it would determine the amount of aid and support they would receive from their local governments. While this system did revive thousands of small businesses that were on the brink of collapse, certain opportunistic administrators would forcibly close down IN JEOPARDY business that cut costs that would go in supporting them. States like Illinois and California would be the most notorious for their business shutdowns, as dictated by their local governments. Many local officials would get canned by their involving in this practice, such as Milwaukee Mayor David Rose, who shutdown many business in the city. Local legislators across the country would always try to push or support the practice of the man on top. Elsewhere however, such as in Texas and Virginia, local business thrived under the system. Someone who didn't thrive was a particular John D. Rockefeller, who was enraged that the government seemed to discriminate against his businesses. Rockefeller wrote in an open letter that "...no fair ground and no consistent market means no capital and no benefits for all.".
Most notorious out of all Chaffee’s cabinet was Public Safety Secretary Edward Carmack. Feared by both politician and civilian alike. The Bureau of Public Safety, called by John D. Rockefeller as the “Carmack Machine”, struck hard on the criminal civilian population. Carmack’s 6-year “War on Crime” envisioned a United States free of the crime and instability ridden tenures of the past, going as strict as possible on any wrongdoers. With the Hancockian Corps in his pocket, it was common sight for BPS agents or the local Hancockian chapter to chase down people on the streets accused with simple crimes. One heavily publicized case involved a 27-year old man, who was brutally beaten after being apprehended for a property damage charge. Carmack’s “masterplan” faced its major opponents and supporters nationwide. Nativist figures that supported his expulsion of the Argentine immigrants such as Representatives James K. Vardaman and John Temple Graves supported Carmack. Those who sought to combat monopoly and corruption power, which Carmack worked heavily to oppose, supported him, such as Representatives Oscar Underwood and William Sulzer and Senators Henry Cabot Lodge and Joseph W. Bailey. Opposing the BPS were the likes of Senators Eugene Debs, Anselm McLaurin, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., Marion Butler Representatives Theodore Roosevelt and Francis Bellamy, and Governor Henry George Jr.. All would oppose Carmack for their own person reasons but united in their opposition. On October 1903, all mentioned would sign the “Declaration of National Renouncement”, documents declaration their oppose to the BPS’ handling of national crime, and demanded the resignation of Secretary Carmack and multiple others in the bureau. The declaration would fail in removing Carmack, though it succeeding in bringing the issue to the public spotlight.
Secretary Carmack was one of the polarizing people in the Chaffee government
The public became polarized in their opinions of the War on Crime. The Boston Custer Society, one of the largest public players of President Custer’s tenure, opposed the BPS and their operations. The BSC had already been frustrated at President Chaffee’s attempts at dismantling the Custerite Society and sought to keep the structure created by their patron. The Association for Social Co-operation also opposed the BPS, and especially the Hancockian Corps. Jacob Coxey and his followers would raise $12,000 to victims of “BPS brutality”, as well as holding their common rallies against government policies. Many also supported the BPS’ efforts, particularly war veterans who were granted added benefits directly by Carmack’s department, as well finding employment through the Hanockians. Carmack starkly told reporters outside the Capitol that "...all may curse me as they wish, but all men bow before the same divine judgement."
The Hero and the Villain
SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
"PRESIDENT CHAFFEE CELEBRATES THIRD YEAR OF PRESIDENCY IN LOS ANGELES" by Vincent Uba, March 4, 1904.
"Almost 100,000 cheering supporters watched on today as the President rode around San Francisco celebrating his third year in office... Accompanied by Vice President George McClellan, Secretary of State Champ Clark, and Secretary to the President and his son Adna Chaffee Jr., signs were raised bearing the names of the members of his administration... Behind all the cheers and excitement, many in the city— and the wider country, wonder if the President would dare to march on into a second term as his enemies begin scheme their next political action."

President Adna Chaffee was dubbed the “Hero of the Rio de la Plata” during the War of Continental Alliance. Some continue to call him that. Though his enemies call him something very different. Coined by Representative Edward M. House, he dubbed Chaffee the “Ferro-Fiend”, saying he was an iron tyrant. Chaffee’s military background made him unfamiliar with many of the duties of the presidency. This would be used both for and against him. Supporters argued his handling of the country proved he went beyond his lack of knowledge of administration and that he thrived even though he knew little. Critics would claim that Chaffee’s ignorance of the web of governance led him to be weak and surrendered his duties to opportunistic individuals. From an interview, House Speaker John Nance Garner would say “I show my full confidence and supply for the competency of the President and his administration. Based on my own eyes, his capacity to work his duties has been more fruitful than any past administration in my lifetime.
Chaffee remained mainly quiet from the public scene during his tenure, a stark difference from his rambunctious predecessor. His image in the public eye remained as an either benevolent or malicious head honcho, one who’s quiet but one who everyone knows has power. The society that grew during his tenure would be both similar and different from the Custerite Society he promised to reimagine. On one hand, casual public life would remain the same, the economic and social stability and patriotism and understanding between normal civilians would continue and flourish during his tenure. On the other hand, policies such as the axing of institutions, the open shift towards nationalism, and fear used by the likes of the BPS shows very obvious change in society. The cult of personality adhered by fanatics of the old president would not go away, neither didn’t the radicals who called for drastic change. As the issues of the past faded away, new and prevalent issues would rise to take their place. America enters the 20th century its own friend and enemy.
23rd President of the United States of America, Adna Chaffee

2024.05.13 15:16 Optimal-You-8238 Unsatisfied with fiancé, should I break up?

Hello all,
I’ll try to get to get to the point. I (25F) have been dating fiance (33M, almost 34M), for a year and a half. We knew ea other as work mates (long story) for a few months before and have been living together since this January (when we got engaged).
I do love him and he’s a great guy overall. Treats me well, respects me, tries to fix things I dislike, doesn’t watch porn anymore, wants a family, works hard etc.
At the beginning the age difference was if anything a plus for attraction, as I’ve only had one other relationship in college years ago w a guy my age, and I really appreciated him being more mature and knowing what he wants out of life. However now (and for the past little while) I’m questioning whether this is the right relationship for me.
For work reasons that cannot be fixed any time soon, we must both work from home as we work together. Usually he works more than me and I take care of the home so it is a nice balance.
Here’s my main struggle. At the beginning we had the usual intense honeymoon sexual relationship. Living apart also accentuated that. I remember him craving it lots and saying how he thought we’d never even be able to work together without just getting it on all the time. In hindsight it was just an infatuated man speaking but it really falsely set up my expectations. Overtime sex has quieted down as is normal, especially towards the time when we were about to get engaged and I was spending lots of time at his place (genuinely bc of work). It went down from 4-5 times a week to about 3-4.
In my other relationship, given that the guy was in his late teens/early twenties and that we were both toxic AF, we had crazy sex all the time. I know this is unrealistic but I do yearn for it quite a bit. Overtime our sex life has gone down to 2-4/week, w 80% of the weeks being at about 3x.
I’ve had many more convos than I wish to admit regarding this topic w him and how I feel undesired and how he’s done w me sexually now that I’m not new anymore, and have just grown extremely insecure bc I know he’s putting the effort to do out that frequency (he’s alluded to it), whereas in my head and from stories my mom has told me, the first year or two we should be banging like rabbits.
This especially kills me when I notice him checking out other women and because I do crave intensity in general and just feel a bit too old in this relationship. I’ve also gotten cheated on p badly in the past so probably doesn’t help.
This translates to me feeling undesired, not being affectionate w him, resenting him, feeling masculine for wanting more, feeling like I’m gonna end up unsatisfied forever since as he and the relationship age, it’ll likely become less.
I don’t feel v comfortable initiating at this point bc I just feel v insecure in general. I do have toys and costumes that we use sometimes. And I do believe he is very attracted to me and that I please him.
My main issues are 1) spending all this time together and only a tiny bit of our time being sexual (unlike w my ex), 2) thinking this isn’t right 3) dreading our sexual future. This is the most beautiful and fit I’ve ever been, what’s it gonna be like as he ages and I do too and we become more and more accostumed, have kids etc? He’s had plenty of relationships, both serious and casual, but I haven’t and feel like I’ll be missing out. He also cites the age thing as having less of a drive, saying he is simply focused on building a life together rather than sex. But for me, I’ve come to realize that it’s probably my love language. Lately I’ve just been rejecting him which I’ve never done before and which isn’t good for us, but I just don’t wanna feel like I’m always available anymore. Makes me feel taken for granted.
Meanwhile our families are getting to know ea other and planning the wedding.
I know this frequency per se doesn’t probably sound bad to you, reader but i just feel old, once again, craving intensity and passion. And I am a very sexual, free spirited person in general and just feel like this is breaking me. It also feels low because it is such a small percentage of our time together. I also keep imagining how it’s gonna turn into 1-2x / week not that far from now when I’m still in my 20s, and it might be too late to leave then. I do leave the house and have a life outside of him but it doesn’t help all that much. And he is really happy w this/ me / a stable life in general.
Don’t know if it’s worth breaking up a committed relationship over this, nor if I’m even expecting too much. My single friends have awful dynamics so don’t want that either.
Advice please? Thank you
Update
I have brought up to him the possibility of moving back out or working in a rented room and he hasn’t taken it well at all. He claims I’m never happy and won’t be with this either, that he’s given up his home office for me to be in it, etc. I really do think I would probably feel better in a situation like that but it would also require paying a rent I don’t now, plus we are trying to save for the wedding. my main issue is just wanting more intensity and passion, and not feeling like an old married couple and I have been telling him this for a while, so don’t understand why he’d even feel blindsided. I am aware this is a horrible place to be at as a woman, where he feels unappreciated and like I’m wasting his time. Which is why it’s crucial for me to figure out my shit
Update 2: I’ve been getting a lot of comments on the rejection thing. I’ve literally done that maybe twice and it was in this last week so not a frequent thing whatsoever

2024.05.13 11:56 desound Greedy child trying to get more out of the will of the deceased mother - what legal basis do we have to reply to civil claim given we want the will to stay the exact same as it is?

Hi all,
This is a real headache to explain, but basically my great aunt got dementia and her daughter who she was not close with at all (given she screwed her over and colluded with her cheating husband to buy a house for below market value) is contesting the will.
The will states she is only to receive 15% of the estate, while her siblings get more, and the reason why is because she colluded to get the house cheap as mentioned. They were divorcing at the time and instead of getting any profit from the house sale, she got none because it went all to her ex and the will was switched to her daughter’s name. They had an estranged relationship and only a decade ago started BARELY talking. The relationship never recovered.
Fast forward to now, my great aunt passed away from her dementia and she left my family, not just the siblings, her estate and money. When the will was announced and the daughter was only getting 15% she accused the rest of the family as abusing the elderly woman and not taking proper care + is saying that she tried to take her mom but was told she couldn’t by my grandma (all hearsay with no proof) and that she should have given the will only to the siblings and their grandchildren, not her sister or her nieces.
We got served with this info and that she believes we had manipulated her in her dementia into making that will a real thing, even though it’s the original and only will, never amended or changed. This was done in front of a lawyer who is willing to testify to that, but she’s saying everyone is corrupt and lying, even the lawyer. Apparently it’s got legs to stand because we have to file a response. Most of the response procedure is straightforward, but we’re puzzled at the legal basis for our response that these are bullshit.
We are wondering what legal basis we have to challenge the claim to make sure the judge does NOT grant the plaintiff a variation on the will / keeping the will as is / as written by the deceased… is there any legal basis? Thank you for reading.

2024.05.13 10:46 Rosewylde21 Hopes for Reconciliation - Squashed

I had hopes for reconciliation. We broke up in January. I reached out earlier this month to try and figure out why. We talked for 5+hours then the next night we went to dinner to continue talking about the breakup. Upon returning to his house, I had to use the restroom so I asked to do so and when we entered I found his girlfriend to be at the house. A girlfriend he had had since August/November. I found out that day that she was the true reason he broke up with me. I should have walked away at that moment, but for some reason I wanted even more closure to know the why for cheating etc. I still loved him even after that. However, he told me that he had been struggling with his decision to originally end things with me and that he had come to the realization I’m his “person” and that he needs to fight for me on the first day we reconnected and hadn’t expected her to be home and hand had an opportunity to end it. I blindly believed this to be true because of how badly I missed him. After that we had two great weeks of hashing things out, spending time together, and dating each other? Then he pulled back and said he needed to work on his mental health. Which is fine, he definitely is in a dark place. He requested a week of no contact which I granted, hesitantly, but nevertheless granted. After that time I was trying to figure out where we are and where we are headed. He continues to give me a non-answer answer of “I dont know” and “I’m scared I’ll fail you again, I need to work on myself first”. I kept trying to reiterate that I understand he has things he wants and needs to work on personally, but he can do that and also maintain some contact with me if he has any intention of reconciling. His response to that is he knows but he needs to figure out why he feels so numb some days without feeling for anything, including me, and then the other days he feels so in love with me. Again, another answer that he doesn’t truly want R or to work this out because even at my deepest points relating to mental health I still knew who I loved and wanted to care for. Maybe I’m just not listening to his needs, but in this situation I feel that the betrayed partner deserves to be a little selfish or demanding. Bottom line is R is off the table now and I’m struggling to cope. I already coped with the initial breakup, but now there is the newfound added layer of cheating and the back and forth of wanting to make it work from him. I’ve been journaling and continuing with some of my hobbies, but I need suggestions on how to take my mind off of things and or advice on how to move forward in future relationships once I take the time to heal... Currently looking into counseling as well, but I will have to check insurance and availability etc. just need something in the meantime to focus energy on.
TLDR: Reconnected after until al breakup only to find out he cheated on me for a few months and R is now off the table. Need suggestions/advice on how to occupy my time so I don’t dwell.

2024.05.13 09:12 taggerungDC So I asked AI to figure what was wrong with NBA2K and come up with some solutions. This is what it came up with

As the title says, I asked Windows Copilot to find the key problems with NBA2K and come up with a few solutions. This is what it said was the game's key issues

Key Problems

According to the data it used (consisting of player feedback and reviews)
  1. Microtransactions: The game has been criticized for its heavy reliance on microtransactions, which are seen as essential to compete online1.
  2. MyCareer Mode: While it has potential, the mode could better reward skill and effort rather than "open-wallet shortcuts".
  3. Fast-Break Gameplay: This aspect of the game has been lacking for over a decade and still needs improvement.
  4. Newcomer Experience: The game is not very welcoming to newcomers, which could be improved for broader appeal.
  5. Online Tournaments: There is a lack of online tournaments with playoff brackets or seasons to use squads.
And these are the solutions that Copilot came up with:
  1. Reduce Microtransactions: Make the game less dependent on in-game purchases. Provide more ways to earn competitive items through gameplay.
  2. Enhance MyCareer Mode: Implement a system that rewards players based on their in-game performance and progression, not their spending.
  3. Improve Fast-Break Dynamics: Work on the AI and mechanics to make fast-breaks more fluid and realistic.
  4. New Player Onboarding: Create tutorials and beginner-friendly modes to help new players get accustomed to the game.
  5. Introduce Online Leagues: Add structured online leagues with tournaments and seasons to enhance the competitive experience.

Let's break these down, shall we?

Reducing Microtransations

While we all know Take-Two ain't doing this under any circumstances (blame the whales just as much as you would blame Take-Two), here's what Copilot and I came up with to reduce microtransaction reliance
  1. Balanced In-Game Economy:
    • Adjust Pricing: Reevaluate the cost of virtual currency (VC) and items. Make sure that the prices are reasonable and not excessively high.
    • Earning VC: Increase the ways players can earn VC through gameplay. Reward skill, performance, and achievements rather than just relying on purchases.
    • Daily Rewards: Implement daily login bonuses or challenges that grant VC. This encourages consistent play without pushing players toward microtransactions.
  2. Transparency and Fairness:
    • Clear Information: Provide transparent information about what items can be obtained through gameplay versus microtransactions. Players should know what they can achieve without spending real money.
    • No Pay-to-Win: Avoid making microtransaction-exclusive items significantly better than what can be earned through regular play. Cosmetic items are fine, but gameplay advantages should not be locked behind paywalls.
  3. Cosmetic Customization:
    • Expand Customization Options: Offer a wide range of cosmetic items (skins, hairstyles, tattoos, etc.) that players can purchase with VC. This allows personalization without affecting gameplay balance.
    • Unlockable Customization: Include unlockable customization options through achievements, challenges, or leveling up. This gives players goals to work toward.
  4. Alternative Progression Paths:
    • Skill-Based Progression: Introduce skill-based progression systems. For example, players could earn attribute points based on their performance in games, which can be used to improve their player’s abilities.
    • Career Achievements: Tie microtransactions to optional shortcuts rather than necessities. For instance, players can choose to buy a skill boost or earn it through in-game achievements.
  5. Community Feedback and Testing:
    • Engage with Players: Listen to community feedback regarding microtransactions. Regularly communicate with players through forums, social media, and surveys.
    • Beta Testing: Involve players in beta testing to identify any issues related to microtransactions early on. This helps ensure a fair and balanced system.

MyCareer Improvements

Again, while Take-Two won't likely implement these, here's what Copilot and I came up with:
  1. Player Progression and Development:
    1. Attribute Upgrades: Streamline the process of upgrading player attributes by making it more intuitive and rewarding. Players should feel a sense of accomplishment as they improve their skills.
    2. Performance-Based Rewards: Tie attribute improvements directly to in-game performance. For example, hitting a series of three-pointers could lead to an increase in the three-point attribute.
    3. Diverse Challenges: Introduce a variety of challenges that cater to different playstyles and reward players with attribute points upon completion.
  2. Narrative and Immersion:
    1. Dynamic Storylines: Create a more dynamic and responsive storyline that reacts to the player’s actions and decisions, providing a unique experience for each playthrough.
    2. Off-Court Activities: Expand off-court activities that impact player development and career trajectory. This could include training, endorsements, and personal life decisions.
  3. Customization and Builds:
    1. Deeper Customization: Allow for deeper customization of player builds, including more options for physical attributes, skills, and playstyles.
    2. Template Builds: Offer a variety of template builds that players can choose from or modify, reflecting the styles of current NBA stars and legends.
  4. Economic System:
    1. Balanced VC Earning: Adjust the virtual currency (VC) earning rates to ensure players can progress at a reasonable pace without feeling forced into microtransactions.
    2. Incentivize Skill: Reward players with VC for skillful play and reaching milestones, rather than just time spent in the game.
  5. Accessibility and Difficulty:
    1. Newcomer Friendly: Offer tutorials and guidance for newcomers to help them understand the mechanics and strategies of basketball within MyCareer instead of just in the 2KU section.

Team Play Mode: An Upgraded Pro-Am mode.

This one was an idea I had in my head honestly, I'm glad Copilot also shared the same thoughts. It would work the same as Pro-Am, but with the following changes:
  1. Player Classes and Customization:
    1. Specialized Player Classes: Introduce various player classes that cater to different playstyles, such as Sharpshooter, Playmaker, Defender, etc. Players will be able to pick from these and form a team with one player per class (to avoid a whole team of Sharpshooters. Copilot and I learned from Overwatch's whole Bridgitte situation). This would be independent from your MyPlayer build, so you can't bring your current build in the mode.
    2. Customizable Attributes: Allow players to customize their virtual athlete’s attributes and skills to fit their preferred role on the team. Your Pro-Am League build will be different from your MyCareer build, it will grow and get better as you play this mode.
  2. Progression and Rewards:
    1. Skill Points and PlayStyles: Earn skill points through gameplay, which can be used to unlock new mode-specific PlayStyles, enhancing your character’s abilities. Once you max out a PlayStyle in Pro-Am League to 99 OVR, you'll unlock it for future MyPlayer Builds.
    2. Team Progression: As the team wins matches and climbs the ranks, unlock new customization options and rewards. These can range from Shoes in your teams colors, your team's jersey to wear outside the mode, etc.
  3. Community and Social Features:
    1. Social Play: Encourage social play by allowing teams to set up friendly matches, tournaments, and special events. Start up rivalries with other teams or even try to recreate Kuroko no Basket if you wanna.
  4. League System:
    1. Divisional Play: Similar to real-life conferences, teams can play within their divisions and qualify for playoffs and championships. Teams are sorted into "divisions" and play in inter-divisional tournaments, the team with the most points getting to play in the Season Championship game for various prizes (all cosmetic, but still pretty cool).
    2. Dynamic Leaderboards: Maintain dynamic leaderboards that display team rankings, player stats, and other achievements.
  5. Events and Tournaments:
    1. In-Game Events: Host regular in-game events with unique themes and challenges that offer exclusive rewards.
    2. Official Tournaments: Partner with esports organizations to hold official NBA2K tournaments with significant prizes. They could even integrate it into the NBA2K League if they wanted to.

Miscellaneous Improvements:

  1. Spectator Mode: Allow players to watch live Pro-Am Rec, Theater, or Park games as spectators. This promotes community engagement and provides entertainment. You can even put VC on it.
  2. Fair Play Enforcement: Implement strict anti-cheating measures to maintain a level playing field. Detect and penalize cheaters.
  3. Improved Anti-Cheat: This one is a no-brainer to stop the Zen and Titan users.
  4. Stop porting to PC if you don't plan it to match the Next-Gen version: Self-explanatory. You have no excuse to match PC to Next-Gen.
  5. In-Game Reporting: Again, self-explanatory
This is quite a lot I know. And just for transparency, these are nothing more than a list of things and AI came up with to improve this game of ours. If any of this stuff gets implemented, the River Styx will be a hockey arena for the Arizona Coyotes. Also, I'm putting this in a google doc and a word doc in case this gets deleted
