cheating on university tests

2024.05.15 03:25 Rich-Engineer-5436 cheating on university tests

Hey everyone, looking at the title, definitely not my proudest moments haha… For context, i’m a STEM student, and obviously, I worked hard to be in my degree in highschool, and worked hard enough to go to a nice uni and do a nice degree. Recently, I’m enrolled in a physics class and have been cheating on weekly tests. I guess the moment I got asked “have u been cheating” and i replied “no?” I decided today, I want to finally change out of it. I’ve been cheating on my tests for 3 weeks, and, don’t feel great about it, in fact i feel disappointed. Because I normally don’t condone myself doing it, but getting good grades, gets to me and thus even if i study a lot i guess i don’t study correctly, because my efforts aren’t reflected in my grades.
I attempt to do the practice questions were given, but i’ve been stressed out of my mind, that I just cannot do anything without cheating in it. And honestly, I don’t want to make it a habit. To some extent, i’m a disciplined person, I follow my schedule , study when I need to study, and try to work hard. I really enjoy chemistry, and my grades truely reflect my hard work in my opinions But for physics, i guess it becoming difficult, made it so hard for me. I found it interesting, but i’m just having a hard time. there’s no one around me that can really help me, and also the fact that the center we have help with, they’re not the best.
I always change the way I study a LOT, and am considering that I might have something wrong with me because i’m always consistently changing my study ways. Never sticking to one, thus, I resorted to cheating. If there are anyone that can help me, I would appreciate your understanding. Thank u.

2024.05.15 03:25 smallbluedinosaur I feel unsafe and exposed when I'm worried even though nothing around me is a threat

I'm sort of asking why as well as just venting. Today was a very scary day at school because of a very big test I had to do and in the hours leading up to it I was just terrified... everyone in the preparation room suddenly felt like some sort of danger to me and I wanted to hide from them and disappear from the world completely. I feel really small, I can't explain what goes on but it happens every time my anxiety is high, particularly at school when I'm out there on my own. Nobody else does this as far as I know so I'm putting it down to autism. I've learned that secretly carrying one of my stuffed animals in my bag really helps to feel less alone especially if I completely shut down temporarily like I did today. Overall a terrifying ordeal, would not recommend, but at least it's over now.

2024.05.15 03:23 bossofthisjim 33 [M4F] Ohio/US/Online Attractive title for gamer/weeb who wants long time relationship.

Hiya! I'm just looking for someone with an infectious personality who likes to play ffxiv or other games or watch anime just as much as I do. I feel like I'm fairly easy to get along with and have a decent sense of humor. My love languages are touch and quality time. I really enjoy Japanese culture and love consuming all sorts of mediums from there.
If I'm not gaming I'm probably at work, watching something or sleeping. Some of my other hobbies include watching long format analysis videos on youtube, streaming sometimes, making art stuff, and customizing stuff!
I took a break from playing xiv but am looking to get back in the swing of things. I've been playing XIV for 10 years now! I do play other games and though, like League (aram usually or tft), gacha games (mihoyo mostly + others), minecraft, ffxi, stardew valley and older (j)rpgs. I also like to beta test new games so I'm usually playing something new.
Hope to hear from you, by sending a message or a chat! I'd love to move to discord sooner than later, but want to talk here first.

2024.05.15 03:18 ProfessionalTossAway I’m so tired of this… MCAS, mycotoxins, and no doctor

I’ve been “sick” for over 4yrs now I think. So many doctors and specialists. The most recent functional med doc I saw presented himself as a mold expert but I came to discover he doesn’t know anything about even the basics such as binders for example. And the stuff he had me try (supplements etc) all triggered my MCAS due to obvious non-MCAS-friendly ingredients.
In fact, the only reason I even know about my mycotoxin situation is because I ordered my own MycoTOX test. He never even suggested mold.
I just broke my apartment lease, signed a new lease, found mold in that apartment, broke the lease before moving in, signed another lease elsewhere for a near-flawless apartment, and then found water spots on the ceiling beginning to form a week after moving in. I’m moving to another building and unit tomorrow. Also I got rid of everything I own, except for a 5’x5’ storage unit of stuff. All I brought is my desktop pc, 4 monitors, and my work PC. But despite all my careful cleaning, my PC is causing me symptoms. So I had to stop using it and I have to sell it along with the brand new 4080 I saved up for and bought a few months ago.
My newest terrifying symptom is the tear film on my eye dries up in one spot and I have a dimple on the edge of my cornea. It’s a rare symptom but it’s been present for 48hrs now and burns. I saw an eye doc and he said it’s just dry eyes and gave me a steroid eye drop that doesn’t help at all. But there’s like a gelatinous flap that comes up sometimes and casts a shadow across my cornea. Terrifyinggg. Fuck me.
I just wish I could find a doctor or clinic who’s knowledgeable on MCAS and mycotoxins. I’d see a Neil Nathan doc over virtual appointments but I know they’re expensive and I’m doubtful they would do anything more than try to conform my condition into their diagnosis.
All my medical tests ALWAYS come back completely normal and healthy for western med docs.
I’ve eaten almost exclusively chicken breast with 3 spices, white rice, and kale and broccoli, for over a year. I can’t eat breakfast or lunch foods. I can’t eat anything. I even had to cut broccoli out recently because it started causing me histamine symptoms every time.
I’m just fucking exhausted and I want this to be behind me so fucking bad. 😭

2024.05.15 03:16 WolfPackLeader95 Ranking and reviews of tactical fanny packs

Backstory as to why I tried so many fanny pack carries, I have pretty bad sciatica pain so I can’t wear belts for extended periods of time as they flare up the pain.
I have owned all 4 of these below, I’d say the most popular bag that’s obviously not on the list is the Vertx S.O.C.P and the reason I did not purchase it is due to the size and it’s kind of ugly. I’ve seen reviews of it and it looks way too bulky for my taste. I prefer something more simple that blends in with everyone else’s fanny packs commonly worn. I also prefer wearing them crossbody / over the shoulder and not around the waist, again due to sciatica.
Out of the 4 below I gave away the Elite gunner and Vertx long walks. I mainly use the 945 bag as my regular EDC with a shield. I use the Vertx Everyday pack with a Ruger LCP II for days I will be out all day as it’s way lighter.
  1. 945 Industries Q.A.P.L Bage (Large) https://www.945industries.com/bags
Pros: Nice quality best looking pack in my opinion, quickly rips open. It is clear winner and is far and away best option I’ve tried. Fits any popular micro 9 with an optic and light. I run a shield plus with a Holosun 407K and a streamlight TLR6 HL fits very easily and has space for a spare mag inside main compartment. Fits up to a Glock 19.
Has front and rear pocket.
Cons: It can fit a stock Glock 19, but an optic gets caught up a little bit, I could rip it open reliably in practice about 7 out of 10 times, when you’re life depends on it that is not good enough for me and it’s why I run a shield instead because it never gets caught up on shield.
The front and rear pocket is on the smaller side with no organization slots/ pockets but can still easily fit a phone or wallet. There is option for additional side pouch, but that is too much going on for me.
It is EXPENSIVE, I’m sure a lot of the cost is that it is only sold with their holsters, you have the option to buy additional holsters but you do not have the option to NOT buy a holster. I mean it’s nice to have a dedicated holster for your fanny pack but if you have bought other packs like I have and already have Velcro backed holsters it is a bit steep.
The pull tab is a bit small for my liking, wish they had the option to make a bigger pull tab. My hands are on the larger side (2XL gloves) but still relatively easy to open. Would also be better if pull tab was a different brighter color for low light conditions.
  1. Elite gunner https://elitesurvival.com/products/hip-gunner-concealed-carry-fanny-pack
Pros: Very nice and thick materials, easily rips open. Fits a Glock 19 with optic and light easily. Has nice large pocket in front with some organization slots. Pull tabs are a brighter color compared to bag so can be easily seen when trying to draw.
Cons: It’s not too bulky but it has a hard cardboard insert that cannot be removed which adds rigidity but wearing something rigid is not comfortable and makes it protrude from your body more.
The Velcro patch is small, every other pack on the list has the interior fully lined with Velcro but this pack is just a smaller square which limits where you can mount your weapon.
No rear pocket.
  1. Vertx Everyday Fanny Pack
https://vertx.com/everyday-fanny-pack
Pros: nice and slim design very similar to lululemon fanny pack. Has the option for extra large pull tabs for zippers. Nice materials, front pocket is roomy with pockets and has a rear pocket that can easily fit a phone. Can fit a micro 9 with a flush mag, light, and optic, it’s a snug fit but it works.
Cons: It doesn’t rip open, packs mentioned above can be open with just one hand and ripped open. You need 2 hands to open this, one hand holding the pack while the other unzips it open.
I’ve seen some people say it can fit a Glock 19, I put a stock Glock 19 without a holster to test fit and it fit but very snug and I’m not comfortable carrying without a holster. Maybe you could carry with just a trigger guard but I would not recommend.
  1. Vertx Long walks Multipurpose waist pack
https://vertx.com/long-walks-mp-waist-pack
Pros: Very nice materials, and easily fit many items in it. Can easily fit a Glock 19 with light and optic, has additional pockets in main compartment with firearm where you can put extra mag or other items. If you want to carry a lot of items and firearm off body this great choice.
Cons: Very bulky, looks inflated even when completely empty.
Too me having extra pockets in the main compartment is also a con, in practice your hand can get caught in them when reaching inside and you must secure anything in the pockets if not they will fall out when you open them.
Zipper open, slowest one for me to open and draw compared to others on the list.

2024.05.15 03:16 babiebunniepog over the hedge

Hi, I need help finding a very specific book and it has been driving me mental for years now and I really cannot find it but I know it exists. it was just a simple over the hedge book, the inside of the book such as the wire coil spine and the artwork on the pages were very similar to the one in the 2006 over the hedge animation book (can't post a picture) but it wasn't that one, it was sort of in the style of a diary with a thickish squishy and padded cover (if that makes sense) with the tabs of each different section sticking out from the the top of the book, I believe it was just a fact book with maybe a few puzzles in? I got it when I was a kid when I went to go and see santa and it was a present but l've not stopped thinking about it since 😭🙏

2024.05.15 03:10 shroomzombie [TOMT]Help me find this 90s-00s obscure horror animation?

I’ve been looking for the name of this animation on and off again for years.
I think it was on Adult Swim and I know for a fact it was drawn animation but I don’t know if it was an anime or cartoon. It could’ve been a part of an anthology. I watched it as a kid in the early 2000’s and was absolutely terrified because it was grotesque and gory. It was about a boy who found a dead(near-death) rabbit on the side of the street and he put it in a box under his bed when his parents told him he couldn’t keep it. Then the rabbit becomes a zombie?? Or tells the boy to kill his parents?? Im shaky on that last bit but im pretty sure the parents get killed.
My uncle said it was called “To the Max” or something but he very well could have been wrong.
Was this an actual show or was I just demented at the age of 8😭

2024.05.15 03:10 Brylan-Stonk Finished second year, feel absolutely devastated at grades

As of April of this year, I have completed my second year of studies in my major, and have gotten my grades back for the Winter semester. All I can say is, I'm utterly disappointed.
By far, my GPA is a 3.3/4.0. A lot of people would say that this is a decent average, but I disagree. My GPA coming out of first year was the same, so my grades haven't even improved, despite having another year to achieve that.
I came into second year with the intention of getting straight A's in all of my courses. As someone who is not in STEM (I'm in a social science major), this seemed pretty doable to me. But it didn't end up turning out the way I wanted it to. First off, I didn't get the best professors this year (I didn't give enough care towards the quality or reputation of the prof, just chose classes that would give a comfortable schedule), so I had a more difficult slate to begin with. Despite that, I chose to go along with it and make the best of it that I could. I tried to see it in a positive light, as in "challenging profs would allow me to learn more and grow as a person".
Right from the get go I implemented new study techniques that I hoped would help me excel in my classes (making question sheets/flashcards, taking thorough notes from the textbook). Turns out, it only helped somewhat. In some classes, I ended getting straight A's throughout. However, I had a bunch of other classes in which I only got B's (and even one C) as a final grade. Some of the classes were genuinely difficult (thanks to tough graders), while some I feel like I didn't put in the proper effort despite going in with the goal of doing so.
This is what truly hurts me. Not the part where I had hard profs, but the fact that a lot of this was within my control and that I still fumbled the bag for quite a bit. At the very least I can say that I put in more effort than last year, but in brutal honestly, I still fucked around for a bit. I have ADHD, and I STILL haven't fully gotten it under control. I had a damn year to do it and I still failed to tame it. It was as if I knew what to do (I watched as many "How to get 4.0 GPA type videos on YouTube), but my brain (still MY fault) didn't act on it properly. I would study hard for concepts that I could understand, but would still give up when things got hard. This manifested itself in the form of missed deadlines (for tasks I simply couldn't get), doing things last minute, and on multiple choice tests, doing poorly on the questions that I refused to study because I felt it "wasn't relevant" or because I got too lazy to go the extra mile. I made schedules, but didn't stick to them completely because I allowed myself to get distracted too easily with other stuff that didn't matter as much.
I valued studying and academics, but a part of me still valued having fun and a social life more. On the positive side, this drove me to get involved in more deeply in extracurriculars, which led me to build a huge group of supportive friends and the expansion of my network, which ultimately led me to obtain two pretty dope executive positions at some large student clubs and win second place in a case competition. This helped a lot in gaining experience on my resume, which allowed me to land the internship I'm doing this summer. On the other hand, I began to prioritize hanging out with friends and relaxing, which led to a lot of wasted time that I could have used to sharpen my knowledge of the subject matter I was supposed to learn in class. I partied more, which led to more hangovers and even more lost time. I made some really great memories along the way, but I was also still "all-over-the-place" and wasn't completely on top of my stuff.
Now, I feel like I have limited my post-graduate chances. I have ambitions to do either an MBA, go to law school, or simply do a masters in my major and go into research/academia from there. I very badly want to do all three at prestigious schools (U of T, McGill), or even the Ivy Leagues or Oxbridge. However, I don't think my chances of getting into Harvard Law or into an MA program at McGill will be too high after they see my average. I do have some pretty strong ECs as of now (which I am extremely grateful for) and am looking to begin with research in my third year, but my GPA so far just doesn't cut it.
I know that I'm still in my second year, and that I have a chance to still turn things around and raise my GPA to something much more competitive by the time I graduate, but the dream of being that "perfect 4.0 student" is impossible now. It hurts so deeply considering that I was one of the top (academically) students in my high school (3.8-3.9 GPA), getting honour roll all 4 years and earning a dope entrance scholarship. I feel like I wasted all of that, and that I'm continuing to waste my potential by failing to tame my bad habits.
So for my next two years, I'm promising myself that I'll be that top student I always wanted to be. I'm still gonna aim for that 4.0 every semester onward, or at least dean's list throughout the rest of my uni career. I want to fight for that high average and discipline, but I fear that I'll be doomed to repeat the same bs I did this year, considering that I spent two years being a mediocre student. I don't want to do that again, I want to actually EXCEL and react my FULL POTENTIAL. I fully regret giving in to laziness, I condemn myself for prioritizing partying over studying, I regret not asking for help when I needed it the most, and I regret any other imprudent decision I have made during this year.
I genuinely want to do better this time. I want that 4.0 desperately. Rant over.

Google rolls out a search filter, named “Web”, to show only text-based links in results

  • Google has introduced a new "Web" filter in Google Search results to exclusively showcase text-based links, simplifying searches to classic blue links and filtering out images, videos, and other non-text forms.
  • The Web filter is part of Google's effort to enhance user experience by providing more focused search options, appearing atop the results page alongside other filter options or under the "more" menu.
  • This development was partly inspired by feedback from users who desired the option to view only text-based web page links in their search results for various reasons, such as preference, internet access limitations, or the need for longer-form text documents.
  • The Web filter marks a nostalgic return to the pre-2007 era of search before the introduction of universal search, allowing users to tailor their search experience more closely to their specific needs or preferences.
Danny Sullivan, a prominent figure at Google, humorously shared his long-standing wish for a Web filter within the search engine, emphasizing his persistence and dedication by saying, "Since I joined Google, I’ve just been a boy standing in front of the search group asking it to love a Web filter." His personal investment and eventual success in seeing the Web filter come to fruition highlights the impact of consistent advocacy and passion in achieving product innovations.
"Since I joined Google, I’ve just been a boy standing in front of the search group asking it to love a Web filter. So happy to see it’s arrived – congrats to the hard-working team on this project that through their own efforts made it a reality!"
The fact that Google tested this "web results" filter back in February of this year reveals the deliberate and thoughtful approach the company takes in rolling out new features. It underscores the extensive testing and feedback collection phases that major tech companies undertake to ensure their updates significantly improve user experience.

2024.05.15 03:01 Straw_hat89 34[M4F] Mexico/Anywhere - Latino searching for his forever person to go on picnics during Sundays.

Hello there,
So, how's the start of the week treating you? Are you feeling those post-weekend blues yet? I always do tbh, I have no freaking idea how the weekend can end in the blink of an eye, but maybe that's because I have only Sundays off. So I treasure them as much as Gollum treasured The Ring. But here we are, we have to enjoy even week days, right? And I'm pretty sure that together we can make them way more enjoyable.
About me:
Ok ,let's start by putting a name and a face to whoever is writing this: My name is Miguel, and I'm just a 34 years old guy enjoying a peaceful, and simple life in a small town in Mexico. Here are a few pics because I know that for some people physical attraction is important. But keep in mind that those pics are all good angles and lightning, so maybe I'll have to send you a selfie after just waking up to show you my reality haha.
In terms of personality people describe me, primarily, as a really chatty, goofy, and curious person. But also as caring, supportive, empathic, and attentive. I value honesty, good communication, respect, loyalty, kindness, and empathy. So I'd love to find someone who's in the same channel because I'd love to receive what I can provide.
I consider myself a homebody type of person: I love to spend plenty of time at home watching Netflix, baseball games, interesting (they are random but I prefer to call them that) YT videos, sometimes listening to music, and I have been getting into reading recently (It helps me to sleep better). When I'm not at home I like to go for walks around town or spending time at the plaza or the park. On rare occasions I go to the city either to go to the movies, a baseball game, or just to buy clothes.
I have been slowly getting back into working out after some time dealing with injuries, so I'm taking things slowly, and being mindful about my body. Important to mention I workout at home, so if you into that we can maybe be gym buddies. Another thing I'm getting back into it is learning new languages. On top of Spanish and English, I also speak Portuguese, a bit of French, and I'm currently starting with Norwegian (people say it's easy so why not).
Last but not least, animals are a really important part of my life, especially dogs, and even when I don't have pets of my own just yet, my family and I, we take care of a couple of stray dogs, and one feral cat (I'm pretty sure my parents love them more than they love me). So cute dog and cat pictures are always on the menu.
I hope the post is not too long, but I really wanted to share some random facts about myself just to make you laugh and learn a bit more about me.

2024.05.15 02:59 DIO-Heaven-Acension I will always support KasHIMo 🗣🗣🗣

The slander is LIES. The antis are LIERS.
If KasHIMo has million fans, then I'm one of them. If KasHIMo has one fan, then I'm THAT ONE. If KasHIMo has no fans, that means I AM BRINGING MYSELF BACK FROM THE DEAD TO PROVE THAT STATMENT WRONG! If KasHIMo’s stocks aren't rock bottom. ITS BECAUSE IM THE LAST INVESTOR! If KasHIMo’s fight is I T animated with the upmost care than I AM WUTA! If I WUTA myself than I will GOATJO MYSELF🗣🗣. If ‘it’ is KasHIMo down players than I WILL BE THE ONE TO LEAVE IT ALL BEHIND.
FACT: KasHIMo did not use his domain on Wukuna because he didn't want to do it if the king of vows couldn't do it!
FACT: The Internet ITSELF was not ready for KasHIMo to receive his crown, but now google has been cured of the FALSE fraud allegations.
FACT: When someone posted on April 12, 2024 ‘What would you change if you woke up as Gege’ I was not able to post what I would say because REDDIT could not handle the glorious TRUTH of KasHIMo being proliferated!!! And now today I can finally post what I wanted to do as gege all that time ago.
This is that what I would have posted (mostly unedited) but wasn't able because I wasn't ALLOWED to by the ANTI KasHIMo government! (as the first comment on this post since it is long)
TLDR: KasHIMo is STILL HIM! WILL ALWAYS BE HIM! HE’S THE GOAT 🗣🗣🗣
————————————————————————
Since this post is in two parts I separated it. The first part was just general praise to KasHIMo but this the 2nd also relates to KasHIMo but not completely. Culling games was my favorite arc so obviously the thing I would do if I woke up as gege pertains to that.
I forgot to save the post asking “what would you do if you woke up as Gege in regards to JJK”
I'm hope I can do that now and it wasn't also because it was so long.

2024.05.15 02:59 ruben11450 Are Flea collars safe for dogs?

So today i went to the vet because i wanted to prevent my dog from getting leishmania, the doctor advised me to use a collar, they had seresto(that prevents fleas and ticks, im not sure it does kill the leishmania fly) and leishcollar (that was specificly made for the leishmania flies but doesnt prevent ticks and fleas) by MSD Animal Health. I went with Leishcollar as it was made specificly for what i wanted and the vet administered a pill to prevent the fleas and ticks that works for 3 months. After this i went home and while i was watching some videos on youtube, i got curious of how these collars work, wich im not sure it was a good idea, as it showed me a couple of videos suggested that these collars were dangerous and killed dogs. I saw one of those videos, there was a man saying the collar killed his dog, about 2 weeks from getting it, with symptoms similar to intoxication. After this i went down the rabbit hole, there were a lot of videos, mostly about a well known brand (wich i will not say, im not sure i can name it) that sources like cnn even say it was responsable for about 2500 animal deaths. Seresto has Imidacloprid and Flumethrin, leishcollar has Deltamethrin. In the leishcollar docs it says the side effects are in very rare ocasions (1 in 10000) lethargy or hyperactivity, gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea and hypersalivation, neurological problems such as ataxia and muscle tremors. I can not confirm these tests.
The thing is, should one trust these collars, specially this one? Are there many reported cases of these doing arm to the animal? What should i do? I dont really see a lot of other options to prevent leishmania.
Another question, at the vet the nurse when applied the collar, she told me to not cut the excess collar and just try to keep it connected to the collar, while in the leishcollar document it clearly states to remove the excess collar, even when i bought scalibor it said to do so, what should i do? Should i remove the excess? Can there be arm to keep the excess (it is perfectly secured to the rest of the collar)?
PS: I meant to write a more elaborate post, but my computer froze and i had to write all of this again, so if i remember anything i could have forgot, ill update it.

something i was thinking bout recently, is a lot of the issue with bubble stem from the fact that its a full 360 protective bunker. and these issues are both pvp and pve as trying to balance a 100% damage mitigation in all directions area denial defence seems to be difficult.
Many suggested buffs/changes to bubble to make it more balanced (be it buffs or nerfs), in either PvE or PvP would negatively impact the other in fairly substantial ways
in pve not being able to shoot through the bubble, its lack of linger defences once you leave, its Oversheild only refreshing upon exiting and re-entering, the bubble dying with the casting titan, and others. are all issues that if changed, would BREAK PvP in a fairly horrible way.
and the inverse is true with balance changes to bubble in PvP reducing bubbles PvE viability.
NOW, swapping bubble's asset for banner shields and calling it a day is going to cause more issues then fix.
BUT, with a fair bit of fiddling i think the out come would be a far better support super for PvE and PvP.
starting off with the most important aspect, aesthetics.
the casting animation would have the titan pump their fist into the air to summon the void sheild, before grabbing it with both arms and slamming it into the ground casting the Wall of Void, leaving the titans Frisbee in the middle of the Wall, which would act as the construct of light sustaining the wall
(if you having trouble picturing the casting animation, think chaining the sentinel sheild cast animation into the Bastion barricade animation),
Moving on to the actual important details functions. (I'm using Wall of Void as a place holder name)
similar to the Banner sheild behind the Wall of Void with be a visual indicator as to its ranges of effects, these effects would be
a good starting point for the Health and Duration of the Wall of Void, would be wells. through play testing and player usage this could be revised
the wALl oF vOiD, would linger until destroyed or its timer runs out. this is due to the easier time killing the players using the wall, so long as you don't try a frontal assault, like a monkey with a shotgun.
i didn't choose the dyslexic life the crayons did it. if you read all this thanks, i just wanted to get it out of my head.

2024.05.15 02:57 BeginningSome5930 The Seven Wonders of Nature

The Seven Wonders of Nature are seven locations and phenomena named by Oliver Zann, the famed explorer of the Juran Jungle, as sights that every man should see. Oliver’s wonders were clearly a play on The Seven Wondrous Buildings of the World described by Oswaldi the Circler, though unlike his predecessor, Oliver’s wonders were published after his tragic death at the hands of cannibals while exploring the island of Picketa, and thus are incomplete.
The southern lights are a strange phenomenon that can be glimpsed in the skies above the vast southern steppe of Beringia and the surrounding sea. They are colorful, vibrant, and seem to dance in the air. According to ancient Beringian myth, the lights are in fact the blooming leaves of a great tree that stands beyond the edge of the world, whose shapes and colors tell of past, present, and future. Aurora, one of the greatest conquerors in history, was born beneath the lights and upon her death she was supposedly subsumed into them, forever altering their pattern.
Calving Cove is a lagoon on the northern shores of Old Eoc that is famously the spawning ground of great whales, who migrate there from both the Inner and Outer Oceans. Whale species that can be found there during their respective breeding seasons including singing humpback whales, powerful predatory leviathans, and cachalots, the largest creatures in the oceans. Whalers from Skrell or Kwind have traditionally found Calving Cove a perfect hunting ground, but in recent decades they fear to sail there. This is due to the presence of Mel, a white leviathan of astounding size and fearsome temperament, who protects the lagoon. Mel seems to attack any ship on sight, and has sunk nearly a dozen vessels to date.
The Floating Stones of Samosan are hundreds of boulders that hover suspended above a sinkhole deep in the jungle. Each boulder is lashed with veins of ore, and they range in size from smaller than a fist to the size of a buildings. Scholars have long known that the the true wonder of the site is not the boulders, but rather the ground beneath them, which seems to emanate some sort of magnetic force the holds the metal-laiden rocks aloft. No scholar has been able to explain this magnetic phenomena, but where science fails, legend provides an answer; The sinkhole is supposedly the final resting place of the fabled Red King of Samosan, and it is his incredible will that lifts the earth even after death. Strangely, for a few days in 1385AC, the stones were said to swirl fiercely, as if caught in a storm, before returning to their gentle floating.
The River Jura is the largest waterway in the world. It is fed by dozens upon dozens of tributaries in the Juran Jungle Basin, and at its greatest width, it is so vast that the shore cannot be seen on either side. Jura is home to uncountable fish species, including flesh eaters said to devour prey in rabid schools, and aquatic archers that strike insects by spitting water. Other animals found in its waters include otters, dolphins, and snakes, crocodiles, and turtles that are all said to grow longer than ships.
The Eocs are a series of snowcapped mountains from which both the nation of Old Eoc and the subcontinent of Eoci take their names. Their inclusion amongst the wonders is hotly contested, as both the Upper Jaw mountains on the border of Ceram and the Dunkle Mountains in Devoni (neither of which Oliver Zann ever saw) have both been revealed to be far taller. Still, the Eocs are impressive, with lakes of glacier-blue water and valleys of old pine forest.
The lava fields of Orisla are renowned for their fearsome appearance, being made up of active volcanoes and the lands between them. According to the Faith of Lucism, each volcano is a fiery hellmoth made by the destroyer god Botar. However the ongoing industrial revolution has lead some to compare the volcanoes to factories spewing forth smoke. It was on the slopes of one of these ashen mountains where the knight Syr Jorge supposedly slew King Tylos, last of the Manfishers, after the latter went mad and, according to legend, transformed into a twisted dragon.
The Seventh Wonder of Nature is a mystery, as Oliver Zann was killed while exploring the island of Picketa with only six of his wonders detailed. Some have suggested that the final wonder might come from one of the regions Oliver never ventured to, such as Ceram, No Man’s Land, or Devoni, but others have suggest that would be an insult to the explorer’s legacy, instead speculating on what Zann might have intended his seventh to be based on his travels. In either case, candidates put forth include the Upper Jaw mountains in Ceram, the Rift of the World in Devoni, the Pricklewood in No Man’s Land, the lapis lazuli mines of Ambri, the Isle of Birds and Bats, and the Coral Bastion.

2024.05.15 02:56 accounts9837 My Awful experience in MAT246 with Soheil + advice

MAT246 (Concepts in Abstract Mathematics) is a proof-based course in number and set theory.
TLDR: The course is irrationally structured and poorly taught. Make extensive use of the textbook and chatGPT as they are better at explaining the material than the prof.
This is a very long review but I think it will prove useful to future students of this course.
Structure:
When I took the course, both sections followed the same syllabus, which was set out by Soheil. The structure of the course was terrible and bizarre. The course is out of 108% meaning it has 8% bonus marks, but according to the syllabus itself, more can be arbitrarily added without notice, at the prof’s whim. For example, after the low scores of the first test, a quiz was administered during the last twenty minutes of a tutorial (this quiz was never mentioned in the syllabus) and the quiz was counted as a bonus, with a 10% weight to the final test mark. Such a boon was not given after the second test. There is also an 800 word essay due at the end of the course worth 4%. It is does not have a rubric and can receive bonus marks for “thoughtful responses”. As the course progressed, weekly assignments had increasingly more bonus marks. In the problem sets, some questions were not worth any marks while others were bonus, and it was not known what questions counted for what prior to receiving the set back. In addition to bonuses, this course is known for curbing grades. These two features are mentioned in some reviews as positives: they in fact should be viewed as a tacit admission of the prof’s inability to create an objective, upfront grading scheme, where marks are not adjusted or added according to class performance, caprice or whatever else.
Lectures:
In two words: confusing and useless. Soheil constantly made analogies with math concepts to real world things which were unnecessary and convoluted (he once compared the expansion of the rationales with field extensions to the fact that, after 9/11 it was discovered that the area underneath was once on water, thus the land was “expanded”). Mostly, the lectures consisted of him reading from the textbook, adding some contorted explanation or analogy. He was often ungrammatical and it was difficult to understand what exactly he meant by what he said. Also, ge was sometimes passive aggressive in his Piazza responses.
After each lecture there is a quiz. For me, this was terribly inopportune as I had to do it at 8pm while rushing to catch the train. Similarly, other students had to commute, possibly without wifi. I found the timing of these quizzes to be very inconsiderate toward the students.
Soheil stated that the content in the earlier chapters will not follow that of the textbook and that the style of proofs demanded in this course are to be formal whereas the ones in the book are informal. Given this, I at first, avoided using the book which was a grave mistake as it is like the Rosseta stone compared to the lectures which are like Sumerian cuneiform.
And I feel that Soheil gave misleading advice on how to study and learn. He rarely took up problems or proofs in the lectures (and few were done in tutorials), which, as I came to learn, is a major failure give that this course is introductory and a major part of math is repeated problem solving. He emphasized rote memorization of many theorems and lemmas, saying that tests mostly require "passive knowledge" when in fact only two or three theorems were relevant and needed citing.

Advice:
With exception to the first part of the course which does not at all follow the textbook, use the latter for the rest of the course. Invest in chat GPT-4 (or whatever is the current version). It explains the concepts incomparably better than the prof and can help in understanding proofs (by giving it a screenshot/picture of the textbook). I suggest looking over the workbook slides and doing the problems. They do not explain the material well and are often ungrammatical but they will contain any material in the course which is not in the textbook. Use the time during lectures and tutorials to read the textbook and work on problems. It is a much better use of time than carefully listening to the prof. Perhaps check in time to time to make sure you are on the right drift. In learning a chapter, I suggest this approach: first taking note of all relevant definitions (this is bedrock of any future knowledge), then read through the lemmas and minor theorems (this helps in learning what a good proof consist of and they may reveal some techniques or tricks), commit to memorize and take note of a major theorem (it is much easier to establish the context of the theorem when you know how its derived than just committing it to memory) and finally, do many problems. It is impossible to over emphasis this. Your motto in mathematics must be: repetitio est mater studiorum. That is, repetition of problem solving. Rote repetition or memorization, is worth little outside of knowing the definitions and major theorems.

I wish you luck in this course. Writing proofs is an excellent way to develop logical thinking skills. This course could really be excellent if only the prof was not this awful (the worst I’ve ever had in fact).

2024.05.15 02:56 blinky84 I misunderstood 'close reading' and accidentally did English class on hard mode

When I was about fifteen, I was ill for a while and wasn't in school for several months. I got work sent home, but I fell behind a bit and had to really work to catch up. I had some definite gaps in my learning, this was late 90s so while I had access to email, it definitely wasn't being used to email teachers or anything. Homework came via packages sent home with my sister.
So I don't know if this is a general thing in schools globally or not, but there was something called 'close reading cards', where you'd have a card with a passage of text on one side, and a list of questions about the text on the other. Cards would be handed out, you'd write down your answers on a price of paper and hand it to the teacher for marking, after which she'd give you another card. Answering the questions would mean reading the text closely. Close reading.
I misinterpreted this. I thought it meant 'close' as in 'closed book'. So I assumed you were meant to read the text, study it closely, memorise the details and then, turn the card over to see the questions and answer them without turning the card over to re-read the text. I was always an advanced reader, so maybe that's why treating it as a memory test seemed reasonable to me. It was not, in fact, reasonable.
I think the teacher assumed I was suddenly struggling and dropping marks because I was ill. This may have been true too, but I didn't realise until some time later that you were not only allowed to re-read the text, you were literally expected to. I'd been doing it on hard mode all along.
English is a stupid language. It doesn't need a hard mode. 'Close', indeed. I was close, but not close enough.

2024.05.15 02:55 allthedarkspaces my neighbor's basement is hiding something awful

I naturally fell into babysitting around the age of 14. Through friends and family, I got leads for babysitting to score some cash, which definitely beat having to work at a restaurant. The job had its ups and downs, but overall it wasn’t a bad gig at all.
Yet, as many good experiences as I had, they were all eclipsed by one night.
A new family in town talked to my dad at work and it turned out that they needed a babysitter. I happily took the job and found myself watching their 10-year old boy a couple of weeks later. There was nothing out of the ordinary about the family themselves. They were the model citizens of suburban America, complete with the white picket fence and blue shutters. Nothing about their house was strange or even unique. Their son Avery was very mild-mannered and polite. Even their car was basic. Not that these were bad things, but I expected it to be a very boring night.
What I did not expect was the uncomfortable, inexplicable feeling that I got when I set foot in the house. A chill ran through me, but there was no draft. I rubbed my arms as I gazed at their staircase as we passed. They gave me a brief tour of the house before they left a note of instructions and all the usual information I expected from a job.
While trying to figure out what was making me so uneasy about the place, I noticed something about their basement door when I passed it. A padlock was placed on the door, along with a deadbolt in place.
"Any questions?” The father asked as my mind was pulled out of my curiosity.
"No, sir. Everything looks great!”
So they left and Avery and I played some games before I made dinner. A couple of times, I thought I heard Avery call me into the den. Both times, I found him sitting on the couch in what most recognize as the TV-zombie state. He denied having called me, and I went back to making dinner. After the third time, I told Avery it wasn’t funny and that he should stop.
“I’m not doing anything, I’m just watching TV!”
His voice went to that higher tone of pleading, sounding desperate for me to believe him.
“Avery, I know it’s my first time and sometimes you wanna test things out, but I’m trying to get dinner ready so if you call me again, I’m not checking on you, okay?”
“I didn't say anything.”
The child glared at the TV with a pouting face, and I began to feel bad. As many times as I’ve heard lies, I was starting to sense that he was telling the truth. So what was I hearing?
“Hey, it’s fine. I’m not mad. Promise.”
Avery turned his head back towards me, seeming to test if I was the one fibbing now.
“How about I let you stay up a little later if we forget about it?”
“Do you really promise?”
“Pinky promise.”
With our contractual pinkies interlocked, spirits were raised again and I was able to finish dinner. Although I didn’t finish without hearing Avery’s voice calling me once more. I ignored it, and when Avery didn’t mention it at dinner I figured it was him fooling around again. The whole time we chatted as we ate, I couldn’t help but feel that something was not right about this house.
As hard as I tried to not look, my eyes kept diverting to the heavy padlock and chain on the basement door. Curiosity got the best of me and as we were cleaning up, I couldn’t help but ask.
“So Avery, what’s the deal with the basement door?”
“What do you mean?”
His words did not match his demeanor. It was obvious he didn’t make eye contact as he forced his sentence out.
“C’mon, you know what I mean. The padlock, chain, and deadbolt. Y’all have dangerous chemicals down there?”
Avery’s face grew paler and he stared at the wall for a moment.
“Hey, it’s okay. You don’t have to tell me. I didn’t mean to…”
“Dad said no one can talk about it anymore.”
This really threw me off, and I couldn’t possibly finish my sentence now. A thick veil of tension materialized between us.
“So you…you guys aren’t allowed to talk about it?”
Avery shook his head.
“Ah, okay. That’s cool. No big deal.”
It was nothing but a big deal.
Was their dad doing something illegal down there? Or was it something strange that no one could do anything about it? Maybe their dad was in denial about something going on. There were waaaaaay too many questions going through my head now.
“Hey, how about we put on a movie?”
“Yeah, sure.”
“What am I saying? Everyone likes movies, right?!”
Now excited, we decided on a fun movie that quickly pulled our minds away from the mysterious basement door. Well, that’s not entirely true. Maybe Avery was distracted, but it was killing me. As we ate popcorn, I couldn’t help but watch Avery, wondering what was going on in that little head of his.
Was there something awful going on in the house and there was nothing I could do to stop it? Or maybe the dad was just…
“Stop,” I told myself inwardly.
Mulling over it all endlessly was not doing myself any favors.
So the movie ended, and I ushered the drifting child to his bed. Now, the house was all to myself until twelve, so I had a good three and a half hours to myself. Immediately, I began texting my friend to tell her all about the weird experience I was having that night. She dismissed it, saying that I was getting spooked by a new place. This annoyed me to no end. I’d been at bigger, way creepier-looking houses but never got weird vibes like this.
Then…I heard it.
“Stephanie…..”
I went instantly still and listened intently.
“You didn’t hear that, Steph. Just keep texting your friend and…”
“Stephanieeeee…”
There was no mistaking it this time. It was definitely coming from the basement.
The acoustics couldn’t have been from Avery upstairs. The voice sounded like a little girl’s. In fact, I’m not even sure he could make his voice like that, anyway.
Slowly, I stood up from the couch and approached the door. Maybe like earlier, I was just hearing things. Maybe being creeped out by the house was starting to mess with my head. That made sense…right?
“Stephanie?”
I jumped back from the door, almost wetting myself in the process. There was no way I could dismiss it as anything else now. There was a little girl’s voice coming from the basement.
“H-hello?” I responded.
I couldn’t keep my voice from shaking.
“Is this Stephanie?”
“Y-yes, it’s Stephanie.”
“Can you help me?”
“Who are you? Why are you locked in the basement?”
“My name is Meredith Rosenberg. They’re kept me locked up for a long time now. The police were almost on to them and that’s why they moved. Can you get me out?”
A cold shock washed over me and made it hard to respond. Was I actually babysitting for a family that kept a little girl prisoner?
“Oh my God…um….how long have you been locked up with them?”
“Ever since I can remember.”
I felt somehow hot and cold at the same time, and wanted to throw up. This all made sense now with what Avery had told me. Of course his father didn’t want him talking about the door…
“I just need to find the keys and I can…”
“They’re hidden in the garage underneath the metal shelf. It’s inside a magnetic key holder.”
“Okay, just hold tight.”
In a panic to free the poor girl, I darted into the garage and began feeling the space underneath the bottom shelf and sure enough, there was a magnetic key holder there. Running back, I popped the key holder open and began to insert the key into the padlock.
“Did you find it?”
“Yes, sweetie. I’m almost there!”
“Oh, please hurry! Sometimes they come home early!”
This sent me into even more of a rush, and I barely managed to fumble the key into the padlock. I finally heard the successful click of the padlock, pulled the chain off, and slid the deadbolt to the right.
“I’m coming, Meredith. Hold on!”
I turned the doorknob and threw open the door, only to be met with darkness. Now full of adrenaline, my hands felt around for the light switch. Finally finding my purchase, I flicked the light on which lit up most of the stairs.
“Meredith?” I called out.
Unless I was remembering it wrong, it sounded like her voice was just on the other side of the door a minute ago. In fact, it was quite strange that she wasn’t waiting for me at the top of the stairs. Wouldn’t you immediately run out of a basement that you were locked in for God knows how long?
“I’m down here!” The little girl’s voice called out.
Judging from the distance, it sounded like she was calling from somewhere at the bottom of the stairs. My brain suddenly began piecing all the details of this interaction together and the idea of going down into the basement became absolutely terrifying.
“Meredith, you can come up now! The door’s open!”
I couldn’t hide the tremor in my voice. Why I was scared of a little girl was beyond me, but much like the house itself, something felt very wrong here.
“I hurt my leg, owww! When you said you were getting the key, I went back down to get some of my things and got hurt. Ahhh….”
Her sounds of pain filled me with sorrow, but an invisible force was holding me back from taking another step into that basement.
“Can you move? Maybe pull yourself up on the railing?”
“I can’t! It hurts too bad!”
“Okay, sweetie umm…”
“What’s wrong? Won’t you help me?”
“I-I it’s just…really dark down there and…and I don’t want to get hurt too. Is there any way you can get to the stairs? Any way at all?”
“I tried to sit up, but my shoulder hurts too much.”
“I thought you said your leg got hurt?”
The words hung in the air like a noose. It was only after I said it that I realized there was several things seriously wrong about all of this. A question popped into my head I didn’t even have time to think about until now.
How did she know where the padlock key was?
A deathly silence took up the space between me and wherever this girl was. It was a standoff, and I couldn’t think of anything else to say. There were questions I could ask her to figure out what was happening, but I felt that her answers weren’t going to be honest. Perhaps at this point, the truth was too frightful to know.
"Meredith? Are you still there?"
It was a stupid question, but it was the only thing my mind could conjure. The additional silence only unnerved me, so I decided to try and get a better look. Fishing my phone out of my pocket, I clicked on the flashlight. It didn’t do me any good because of the awful range, so I did the one thing I’d already told myself not to do…
I took a step forward...
Maybe it was the angle of the stairs or the lighting, but that one step gave me more information than I ever wanted to know. I caught a better view of the bottom step, which was essentially a ledge into a black abyss. Something looked different on this step, but it took a second to register what it was.
The step was wet, a pool of some unknown liquid overflowing into the darkness of the basement. I knew for sure that the father hadn’t mentioned any flooding so it would be way too random for that. So I stood there, watching in frozen curiosity as the puddle then suddenly rippled…and I realized the abominable truth.
It wasn’t water.
It was a puddle of saliva…and something was drooling into it from the dark.
A wretched chuckle emanated from the horrid void beyond the step, and it cemented me even further into place. It was a wet chortle, and positively evil.
“How did you like my voices?” The thing said from the dark. “I’ve been practicing."
The epiphany creeped down my spine…it was now talking in Avery’s voice. Everything in my body screamed at me to run. I heard the screams but I couldn’t respond no matter how hard I tried.
"A pity though…almost got you."
At this, the most gruesome face peeled back the shadows and revealed itself, along with its unearthly mandibles and small fountain of saliva. My faculties finally came to and I threw myself into the house and kicked the door closed. In mere seconds, I had the door bolted and chained. Leaning against the door, my chest heaved as I struggled to catch my breath.
Just as I felt I was safe, the door shuddered as a terrible blow rocked it. I screamed and ran upstairs to grab Avery.
I practically dragged the poor kid out the door and called the police. It wasn’t until the operator came on that I realized I was about to report a monster in the house. Thinking quickly, I told them that I heard a burglar in the home.
It wasn’t long before the police and Avery’s parents came home. Nothing was found, even in the basement, but I didn’t even care at that point. I just wanted the hell out of that house and away from whatever that….thing was. Avery’s parents kept glancing at me funny the whole time, probably because they knew I had their basement key. I shoved it into their hands before I hugged Avery and got into my car to drive home. That poor kid has to live in that house with that thing, but there was nothing I could do about it.
As long as I am alive, I will never….ever set foot in that house again.
And as for basements go, I can't go into them anymore. I just simply can't...

2024.05.15 02:54 Sleepingmorty [Unknown (presumed to be a flash game)] [last decade?] mental hospital w/ cat, jump scare whenever you walk into room

Genre: horror
Estimated year of release: 2013-2015, not sure, could be later
Graphics/art style: not sure
Notable characters: a black cat, who kinda looks like Felix the cat, but red dots for eyes, kinda like a stuffed animal, plus the player, and the doctor monster thing
Notable gameplay mechanics: you are walking around a mental hospital, 1st person, holding a weapon (?) you would be following a black cat (think call of duty) every time you walked into a room, ther was a jump scare, maybe of a doctor (?) Before stating “whoops!” Like minecraft after you die, but you just can’t move for 5-10 seconds. I know for a fact that the player youre playing as had some sort of mental illness. There was no ending, other then whenever you get jumpscared 5 times and you fall down, as the cat stared at you for a second, before walking off.
Other details: this was remembered right about when I was falling asleep, and I’m typing this now. This was from when I was very young, so sorry if there’s a lack of details. This may ave been a dream, but from how I remember it, so clearly, I doubt it.

2024.05.15 02:53 allthedarkspaces my neighbor's basement is hiding something awful
