I am a year and a half into practice and it feels like it's harder, not easier. Is this a thing?
I work in a high volume outpatient specialty where I am the only NP. The people I work with are nice and I've made some friends there, but leadership within the practice is lacking and I do not have good support.
The person who is supposed to lead basically does as little as possible on that front - and unfortunately he is also my supervising MD. This is a person NOT INTERESTED in being in the thick of it, whether it be providing me guidance, giving direction to the team, or guiding the culture of the clinic. It leaves a vacuum for people who WANT to be in charge and that does not go very well.
I'm left to fend for myself and I've only gotten busier and busier.
I've managed to work out some changes in my template, which will reduce my overall patient load. It does not change anything else. Without support, I am completely overwhelmed most of the time, and I guess support isn't an option.
I feel like the MDs in my clinic all cope similarly with the practice style - by showing up, racing around to see patients, talking minimally to everyone else and trying to fly under the radar, then running to their office to chart quickly with the door shut, then out the door before anyone can ask any questions.
Is this typical?

I've never really made secret of how much I dislike the official deity stats. After tweaking the deity rules to my liking and taking into account all of 3.5's released supplements, here's the first of of hopefully many new and old deities updated to 3.5e, taking heavy inspiration from Faiths and Avatars and Powers and Pantheons.

Agile Fighting (Ex) Mask is a devilishly difficult target. He has a +2 dodge bonus to Armor Class. When fighting defensively or using total defense, this bonus becomes +3. In addition, he takes no penalty to his Armor Class or on melee attack rolls when kneeling, sitting, or prone. This ability works only if Mask wears light or no armor and carries no more than a light load.
Divinity Mask is an embodiment of ancient divine power. As such, reality is his to shape as he sees fit.
Alter Reality: Mask may alter reality within the bounds of his portfolio. This functions as a wish spell that requires no XP or material cost. The limits of this ability are fully described in Deities and Demigods. He can additionally alter his size from Fine to Colossal and may additionally alter up to 100 pounds of objects in the same manner.
Avatar: Mask can have up to five avatars at any given time. Mask’s avatar typically appears as a sardonic, slightly built human male clad in soft gray leather armor, wearing a black mask tinged with red and a black cloak, although he may also appear as a soft-spoken human female with glowing pale skin, white starry lights for eyes, and floor-length, dark hair who walks barefoot and is always shrouded in shadowlike gloom. In public, Mask’s form is ever-changing: human, halfling, or dwarf; male or female; and of all ages, builds, and strengths. Whatever his form, Mask’s tread and movements make no sound and leave no trail.
Divine Blast: Mask can create a ray of divine power that extends for up to ten miles, dealing up to 26d12 points of damage, as a ranged touch attack with no saving throw. Mask can unleash a divine blast 19 times per day, and alter the visual, auditory and sensation-based qualities of his divine blast as he desires. Mask’s divine blasts generally take the form of faintly red-tinged rays of silent shadow.
Divine Shield: As a free action 18 times per day, Mask can create a shield that lasts 10 minutes and stops 100 points of damage from attacks. Once the shield stops that much damage, it collapses. Any damage Mask is naturally immune to does not count towards the shield’s limits.
Fast Acrobatics (Ex) Mask can avoid the normal penalties for accelerated movement while using his acrobatic talents. He ignores the normal —5 penalty when making a Balance check while moving at his full normal speed. He can climb at half his speed as a move action without taking a —5 penalty on his Climb check. Finally, he can tumble at his full speed without taking the normal —10 penalty on his Tumble check.
Kip Up (Ex) Mask can stand up from a prone position as a free action that doesn't provoke attacks of opportunity. This ability works only if he wears light or no armor and carries no more than a light load.
Lord of Shadows (unique salient divine ability) Such is Mask’s mastery over shadow that it is considered an extension of his own being. Mask can see perfectly in all forms of magical and non-magical darkness. Any creature that casts a shadow within the range of his divine aura (500 ft) is treated as flanked and flat-footed, and Mask can attack through any such shadow as though in melee range.
In addition, once every round Mask can spontaneously cast any mystery, any spell with the [darkness] descriptor or from the shadow subschool (with an additional +50% effectiveness), or from the school of illusion except for spells with the [light] descriptor, at caster level 60^th (70^th vs SR) with a DC of 48 + spell level.
Master of all Thieves (unique salient divine ability) Mask is thievery incarnate, the epitome of which every thief, rogue and trickster in Toril consciously or unconsciously desires to emulate. This mastery manifests in the following methods:
First, Mask is always aware of the value of every individual piece of equipment carried by everyone within 1 mile of him, or within 10 miles in any condition other than full daylight. He is aware of their most expensive items and their most beloved keepsakes. By succeeding at a Sleight of Hand check against his victim’s Sense Motive check, he can then attempt to steal any one item of his choice within the same area, or he can choose to afflict the item with soul’s treasure lost at caster level 60^th if feeling particularly vindictive.
In addition, Mask can steal metaphysical concepts in addition to physical valuables. When dealing sneak attack damage, he can forgo 1d6 damage per two spell levels of sneak attack dice to instead steal the highest-level spell, maneuver, psionic power or spell-like ability the victim knows and retains the spell for up to 10 hours later. Mask can cast the effect himself within that limit, using the original caster’s saving throw DC and caster level. He can also instead choose to steal an ongoing beneficial spell effect from a creature and enjoy its benefits for its full duration. Furthermore, Mask can steal knowledge of a feat and gain its benefits for 10 hours, although the creature retains the feat.
The touch of Mask’s bare hand against any non-magical lock or chain erodes it into dust. Magical locks must succeed at a caster level check against Mask’s touch (CL 70^th) or suffer the same fate.
Finally, as the deific incarnation of thievery, Mask’s skills exceed normal thieves; he uses the sum of his levels to determine his effective rogue level for the purpose of his rogue class ability progression and bonus feats. He can inflict sneak attacks on creatures normally immune to such effects.
Steady Stance (Ex) Mask remains stable on his feet when others have difficulty standing. He is not considered flat-footed while balancing or climbing, and he adds his thief-acrobat level as a bonus on Balance or Climb checks to remain balancing or climbing when he takes damage.
Uncanny Presence (unique salient divine ability) Mask’s dexterity and grace are nearly unchallenged. He has Dexterous Fortitude and Dexterous Will as bonus feats, and if he is subjected to a spell that has a partial or half effect on a successful save, he suffers no adverse effect if he successfully saves. Mask is additionally immune to all divination effects unless he wishes to be affected, unless an epic spell using the Reveal seed is used and manages to penetrate his spell resistance, which alerts him to the caster and their location immediately.
Mask’s presence also distorts creatures’ perception of reality. His divine aura also suppresses all forms of immunity to illusionary effects within its radius, although creatures naturally immune to illusions instead gain a +4 bonus to their saving throws against such effects.
Possessions
Mask carries Stealthwhisper, a +8 eager keen speed longsword of shadowstrike. Stealthwhisper’s blade is pitch-black, never reflects light, cannot rust or corrode, and makes no sound when swung. The blade is so perfectly balanced that it is considered a light weapon, allows its wielder to use his Dexterity modifier for damage rolls and adds its enhancement bonus to the damage dice of its wielder’s sneak attacks. Mask can resize the weapon to the shape of a short sword, greatsword, dagger or bastard sword when he desires. (CL 60^th)
Mask also sometimes wears the cloak of shadows, a black velvet cloak that allows him to become completely invisible as per superior invisibility that cannot be broken except via epic spells utilizing the Reveal epic spell seed that successfully penetrate Mask’s spell resistance. It also allows him to fly at his land speed with perfect maneuverability and shapechange at will, and he has been known to loan out his cloak to particularly worthy worshipers. (CL 60^th)
The Shadowlord also wears +7 studded leather armor of freedom and quickness with no armor check penalty, Dexterity penalty or spell failure chance.

Other Divine Powers As a lesser deity, Mask may take 10 on any check. Mask treats a 1 on an attack roll or saving throw normally and not as an automatic failure. He is immortal. Senses Mask can see (using normal vision or darkvision), hear, touch, and smell at a distance of ten miles. As a standard action, he can perceive anything within ten miles of his worshippers, holy sites, objects, or any location where one of his titles or name was spoken in the last hour. He can extend his senses to up to five locations at once. He can block the sensing power of deities of his rank or lower at up to two remote locations at once for ten hours. Portfolio Sense Mask senses any theft or criminal act, as long as the event in question affects at least five hundred people. He is similarly aware of clandestine goings-on that take place in shadows if the event is of similar scope. Automatic Actions Mask can use any action relating to thievery and shadows as a free action regardless of the prerequisites, as long as the DC for the task is 20 or lower. Mask cannot do anything as a free action if the task would be a move action or part of a move action. He can perform up to five such free actions each round. Create Magic Items Mask can create any kind of magic item that facilitates deception or theft, as well as any magic item tied to the shadows, as long as the item's market price does not exceed 30,000 gp.

Settings
This document is to help you determine exactly what each setting in the Ulti-Planner app is for. We hope it clears up anything not so intuitive.
Main Settings
Settings - See Secondary Screen information below.
Calendars/Lists - This allows you to pick which event calendars or reminder lists are “On”, or featured in your main views in the app. If you have calendars on your system that you don’t want to see regularly you can turn them off here(you can still have them available in a custom calendar filter).
This also is where you can choose the default calendar and list that is used when you go to create a new event or reminder.
Time Zone - This is how you turn on timezone support. If this is off it uses the system timezone of your current location, otherwise it can show times based on the timezone selected.
Tags - This is the screen that allows you to setup colors and Icons for hashtags. It also is where you can create keywords that also have a color or icon. These are keywords that the app looks for in your title, so for instance a “Dentist Appointment” event can have a tooth icon and blue color by identifying “Dentist” as a keyword.
App Icon - Allows you to change the main app icon to one you like. The premium version offers a wide variety of options.
Email Support - Our preferred way to hear from you if you have feedback or issues. The system automatically adds system and device information that we otherwise end up asking for in a lot of situations.
Rate the App - Access to the AppStore to rate the app, we really appreciate a good rating or review.
Settings Secondary Screens
Display
We pride ourselves on allowing you to setup the look of the app to match your personality and preferences.
Theme - The app is designed so that in the regular light and dark modes of the phone, it has a theme color that will be featured in most titles and accessory views. Changing this to the color you prefer really goes a long way to making the app feel more like you want It to.
Solid Background - If you would rather have the entire app be themed in a custom background color you can turn this switch on and choose the solid color in the next selection.
Solid Color - The color to be used for the background if in Solid Background mode. In some very rare instances the actual Theme color set above will also be used for certain secondary touches in the app. This is also where you can find the new “FADE” choices, which present as a gradient background from a dark top to another color on the main top level views of the app.
Interface - The app actually has 2 looks that can be chosen, Modern or Traditional. Traditional has a bit more simple look with more straight lines and bars showing colors. Modern is a newer take that uses rounded edges to give the app a newer look.
Mode - We allow you to set the app in Dark or Light mode locally, or Auto which uses the system wide Dark/Light mode setup.
Large Title Bars - With the advent of bigger screens, sometimes rather large titles are preferred on the screens. But if you want to maximize the amount of Information available we allow this to be turned off to give you even more room.
Tabs - On iPhone this allows you to turn the entire interface into a tabbed based app, So instead of accessing some of the other views using the top menu, you will be able to quickly use the tabs at the bottom to move between sections of the app.
Title - The top title bar text can be set to take on 3 different looks.
Modules
The Premium version of the app allows for several powerful sections of the app, each in their own right with features rivaling other full apps in their genre.
Reminders - This allows you to use Reminders in the app including on the calendar views and in a full screen, with customizable views and lists to view all of your reminders sorted and presented the way you want.
Contacts - The contacts screen allows you to fully access your contacts and display them by groups and favorites.
Projects - The projects screen is a system in which to organize your reminders, along with Events and Contacts, into full on projects that are organized and interacted with using a Kanban(column based) project board with custom statuses. It takes advantage of context menus and drag and drop, to allow you to quickly categorize where in your project workflow each task is.
Goals - Goals is a way to keep track of your habits from within your calendar. Each goal is actually a specialized event that is keeping track of your progress, so you can track things you want to aspire to do daily or weekly. Things like exercise, health, and productivity habits are right in front of you to do to keep your streaks.
Focus Sessions - Focus sessions are a way for you to really start a timed session dedicated to really focus on one task or project. We have a traditional timer or Pomodoro, which is a system where you focus for a set time(like 25 minutes) followed by a break(5 minutes) and then that cycle is repeated until 4 focus sessions are completed.
Features
These are the main features that you will enjoy when upgrading to the premium version. Watch your productivity soar.
Weather - We hope you find it very handy to have your weather and forecasts shown right along with your calendar events. Apple weather forecasts for your location, along with forecasts shown for events when you travel.
Quick Entry - Also called Natural Language Entry , this is a way to type in your events and the app will parse to try to create the event based on what you say like “Meeting at 9pm at Bobs Cafe”, this uses its own entry view that also will show you templates and locations to try to predict what you are typing.
Icons - Icons are a great way to assign meaning to events, calendars, and keywords so you very quickly recognize what is coming up in your agenda without having to even read text. Some users love the visual cue that assigning these icons give you.
Hashtags - We have built out a system that can assign tags to your events and reminders in order to use them to filter and sort your items quickly and assign colors and icons.
Advanced Views - Extra calendar views are in the premium version including the Block Week and Agenda List views for when those solutions are the way you want to visualize your schedule.
Calendar
Single Calendar Filters - The app features a very powerful filtering system, which can be turned on/off at the bottom of the calendar screens. This option allows you to populate that list initially with each individual calendar you have turned on, so a filter selection will be available for each. If this is off, the filters will be exclusively specialty filters and custom filters created using the “+ create filter” available in the filter bar.
Note: Custom Filter’s is one of the most powerful features of the app.
Default Length - This is the default length of the event when it is created.
Drag and Drop - A lot of the calendar screens have the ability to drag reminders and events from a day list to another day in order to reschedule it. If you turn this feature off, the day views then are likely to have very advanced context menus with a bunch of features to interact with the item when you hard press and hold on them
Month
Month Display - The main way to customize your month calendar. If you want to see text, icons, timeline bars, dots, the weather, or Birthday images, this is where you can choose the look that best suits you. Note: If you would like to use multiple different displays, using a custom calendar filter allows you to quickly swap between calendar looks, as well as what is contained in them.
Text Size - When drawing the calendar using calendar text, this sets the size used.
Week Start - When drawing the calendar this will start the calendar based on the day selected.
Colored Text - When drawing the month days, if using text this will draw that text in the calendar or tag color associated with this event.
Week Numbers - Shows the week numbers in front of each row of the calendar.
Hide Other Months: In the depiction of the month, if some days show are in the previous or next month, it will just show them as blank if this is on, otherwise they will be grayed.
Landscape Next Month: On iPad and Mac if you have this on, it will show a small Month below the day for next month.
Note: You can turn the month into a full screen view without the day view or a week view that has the week as a strip of days at the top, by swiping up and down, or using the zoom menu options.
Week
Horizontal - On the “Block Week” this will change from reading up and down to left and right.
First Day - On the “Block Week” you can set the first day including starting with today.
Day
Wrapping Events
Status Icons - These are small icons that are shown in the Grid and on the right of the events and reminder in the day view of the month screen. They indicate things like if a list, location, attendees, or note is present, or if it is recurring.
Three Day Grid - The timeline day grid main view can be shown as a single day or 3 day view on the iPhone. A 7 day option is available on iPad and Mac.
Day Bar - A day bar is a visual timeline of your current day. It shows all 24 hours with coloring shown where in the day events are scheduled.
Reminders
Default View - In the Lists it is the default view type you want to see, either list or card.
Hide Recent- In the main overview of all Reminders, you can hide the section called recent, which shows you which groups you have accessed the most recently
Overdue Today - This will show overdue dated reminders on today on the calendar if they haven’t been completed.
Hide Completed - This hides reminders in the calendar views (and possibly list views depending on sorting) if they have been completed.
Hide Sublists - In the Reminder list views you can use have the embedded sub-lists shown inline and indented.

I've had this idea for a centralized/decentralized network of intrinsically linked entities that is engineered to implement polycentric governance principles so that the ecosystem acts as a mesh-network to all the participants of the network.
I'm calling it a Cellular Cooperative.
FWIW, I had no idea what "polycentric governance" was until like a month ago… when I managed to write the right prompt to get one of those LLM AIs to inform me that PG is what I've been thinking about but didn't have the words to discuss.
Do y'all think this is the right venue to have this kind of chat? If so I'll share more :) There is a *lot* to it.
Since there seems to be interest, and no one told me to bugger off, here's what I wrote this morning… and what Gemini spit out when I shared.
There's a bunch of other supporting terminology that I haven't introduced cuz it's more operational than structure.
Such as Cellular Integration, Cellular Lifecycle Management, Cellular Culture, Cellular Collapse, Cellular Degradation, Dynamic Contracts, Dynamic Operating Agreements, And more.
Also, this isn't designed to take advantage of traditional Cooperative entity structures. It's meant to be implemented in a Limited Liability Company, or a Series LLC.
That way each Cell has its own corporate veil.
First, the goal that has had me going down a rabbit hole of governance and behavior psychology for years now, is:
Make owning a business as easy as applying for a job. For a wide range of industries. What I'm sharing is only a part of that.
The concept of a Cellular Cooperative (CC) itself, is pretty simple… the real complications arise from finding the optimal folks to produce value… and coordinating everything.
Which, when you read this, I am like 87% sure a whole lotta ya are gonna have "oh… this or that technology do this." What I'm sharing is the architecture of a blueprint that only represents the exterior of a home.
The interior blueprints - what the home is composed of, and how - the tech you're probably thinking of - is a different topic. So, no blockchain or DLT or web3 or any of that stuff is within the scope of what I'm sharing.
Please keep in mind, there is no "official" definition for these terms that I've been able to find, within this organizational metaphor.
So… I'm kinda making up the terms as I go along. And I know, some of the concepts are likely labeled by some other word, or damn similar. :)

This entails fostering both strong senses of independence and interdependence, with improvement being seen at a central level as a continuous, gradual phenomenon. Terminology:
A Cellular Organization (CO) is a wrapper than coordinates Cells. For example, a CO may be a publicly traded company, a non-profit, a cooperative, a school, an institution, etc.
A CO is not Holacracy, or Sociocracy. But, both of those Operating Models can be implemented within a CO.
A Cell, aka Cellular Unit (CU), is an intentionally small group of actors, resources, stakeholders, and shared mission, that produce, and provide, value. A CU is abstract, therefore it can apply to all sorts of organizations - groupings - in the public, and private.
A "Cell" is akin to a "Circle" in Sociocracy. But more abstract.
A Cellular Venture (CV) is a group of Cells that have come together to produce some sort of shared value based on common interests, resources, specialties, etc. A CV implies that the Cells have defined, and agreed upon, an Operating Agreement, as well as how the associated CV Cells are most efficiently coordinated.
A CV that involves the coordination of multiple Cells, which means the Cells, and actors, within a CV get to choose what kind of governance is applied.
Sociocracy, Holacracy, Hierarchy, etc…
A cross-functional team can be considered a CV too; however, that concept is typically just a "hierarchy in a hierarchy." so there is no autonomy within that structure. The "team" is mandated.
Cross-functional teams suck, and I feel that "HIAH" is an apt acronym when pronounced out loud, because I feel like I get punched in the face when people randomnly destroy them because of pIvOt In PRioRiTiEs.
A Cellular Venture can be a Cellular Organization. It's a simple concept. People -> Cell -> Cellular Venture -> Cellular Organization. Nothing really novel in that. It's Sociocracy. :)
A typical Organization, as of 2024, typically puts no thought into the actual structure, and governance mechanisms, of the Organization, and Culture.
An unfortunate repercussion of this is that the support structures, and systems, that "emerge" typically then calcify into a traditional hierarchy, and traditional systems.
This lack of forethought in the deployment of support systems can then reinforce a system which is more oriented toward lowering costs, and increasing "shareholder value," as the Organization grows and scales.
I, personally, believe that this happens because the support systems at scale are not thought about until stakeholders have stuck their stakes in. So the contributors don't get steak. :( Just shitty hamburgers.
But - here's where this thought experiment gets really fun. At least to me.
A Cellular Organization is not flat. It is multi-dimensional because it facilitates the CVs, which are flat. And Cells aren't necessarily locked into a single CV.
Which makes a CO a centralized/decentralized Polycentric Network. Which means it needs to be Polycentric Governed.
This brings me back to a "Cellular Cooperative." It is just a CO with the democratic principles, and systems, baked in.
And, I believe, with some conscious effort put into architecting governance structures up front which are designed to be supportive and enduring, that a CO can become distributed - enabling the organization to better compete in the larger markets while maintaining its democratic structures.

My favorite part about doing this research has been verifying that my hunches are accurate by describing what I'm working through to LLMs… and then they predict what I was considering as solutions to a challenge.

Alright, so to begin, I enjoy this mod. However, it does have its flaws.
​
Positives:

• It's very fast in terms of game speed, much faster than the base game HOI4. In-game years seem to fly by. This is great news for anyone with an older PC and just great news in general cause game go fast good.
• All of the major powers have robust focus trees; there's always something for you to do.
• Lots of fluff in this mod. Everything from obscure colonial conflicts to the Spanish Flu is present in this mod and usually in a meaningful way.
  • For instance, one of the first things you do as Germany and France is negotiate the Agadir crisis, and you can totally provoke a war within the first year of the game if you want.
  • When the Spanish Flu hits, it hits hard, and you need to play a PP minigame to find a vaccine while mitigating the crippling effects of the Flu on your society.
    • I acknowledge this isn't for everyone, but I personally enjoy a bit of historical RP and the representation of the Spanish Flu as the serious threat that it was
• Every nation feels unique to play, however there are a few problems with this that I'll cover later on

Negatives:

• Unfortunately, HOI4 AI is still HOI4 AI and as such is pretty stupid.
  • Nobody ever guards their ports for some reason, meaning that Gallipoli is actually pretty easy most of the time
• There is one particularly bad design decision that can completely cripple your game if you wander into it without knowing
  • Occupying Ottoman core territory will result in a negative malus to resistance and compliance that is insanely bad to the point where I question if the devs were Turks
  • Your gun production goes into the toilet, there is no recovering from it, you cannot produce enough to cover the cost of occupying the territory.
  • This completely destroyed one of my British games where I successfully capitulated the Ottomans. After that I was literally unable to play the game cause no guns
  • However, I will note that I didn't see this in my most recent game, so therefore it may be patched out.

Maybe good or bad depending on pov:

• Trench warfare is the name of the game in this mod. It creates a very slow style of combat that might not appeal to everyone, but I enjoy it because I like a defensive style of gameplay.
  • A key part of this mod is building up to overcome trench warfare, through unlocking doctrines, creating tanks, opening new fronts, building an air force, etc. I feel that it accomplishes this pretty well.
• Some nations get more love than others
  • Now I put this in good or bad cause fundamentally it doesn't really affect the overall game
  • But you'll notice that a French game has more fluff than a British game for example
• The primary bottleneck in-game is industry
  • It takes a very long time to get a strong industry because world tension never spikes high enough before the war starts to get anything more than partial mobilization
  • You'll never have an enormous amount of factories
  • Battles will actually destroy more equipment than manpower
  • So your capacity to fight is effectively determined by how long your stockpiles of equipment will last
  • Building up an army and military industry before the war is thus very hard, meaning that you do most of that during the war
  • However, if you have access to the international market you can totally equip a huge army that way
• Everybody has enormous historically accurate division templates
  • these are bad
  • the easiest way to win the war is by reducing the width of your infantry to like a 6/1 15 width division. then you can build more of them and they hit harder cause you can fit more support companies into a single battle. And the AI will still be using its enormous divisions. Seriously this is so effective it almost feels cheesy
  • I put this in good or bad cause I know some people like the rp and cause the industrial bottleneck still applies here. You can't keep an offensive going forever, and while these divisions are more effective, they tend to suck up a lot of artillery and support equipment.
• Theres a lot of alt history paths
  • Some of them are stronger that historical especially for weaker nations
  • others effectively cripple you if your already strong
  • however I like that the options are there and they all have a bit of fluff
• There is a bit of post war content
  • but most of it involves being hit with massive negative focuses
  • and the stuff that exists isn't fully fleshed out yet
  • The fluff is interesting tho
  • I don't put this as a negative cause its not the main focus of the mod
• Random events
  • I know some people hate these so I put it here
  • They can be positive or negative
  • Nothing crazy just stuff like French political factionalism and army epidemics
• Research is kinda funny in this mod
  • Theres not a lot to research in the early game, everything becomes available in like 1914
  • It means you rather quickly research everything available by like 1912
  • Not necessarily a bad thing cause its part of the mod design of really building up when the war starts
  • you do get a decent amount of research bonuses through focuses that you can use for the funny research zone between 1912 and 1914
  • The mod doesn't have fully updated tech, like for instance it still uses old style planes instead of a designer
• In terms of each nation being unique I'll quickly cover each one here. There are some nations that are much easier to play than others, as you'll soon see
  • France is an absolute powerhouse.
    • The earliest I've ever gotten tanks was as France.
    • You get really good industrial and production bonuses.
    • You can get really cheap doctrines early on
    • Your focus tree is extremely strong with a lot of very nice bonuses
    • Lots of fun fluff
    • You can win the war by sitting back and waiting, something I'll cover when talking about Germany
  • Britain is clearly the junior partner of France
    • unfortunately not a lot of love for tanks in the British tree, which means its very hard to produce them. Which is sad cause the brits were the tanks dudes historically
    • Your options are very open for what you can do, but it does nudge you a little towards fighting the Ottomans
    • Your specialty is navy, and you do have to focus on beating the Germans. However this is not that difficult if you just blob your navy and build anti-sub destroyers. You don't really have to worry about any other naval theatre which means you can concentrate on the germans until you sink enough ships then you can send the fleet wherever.
    • While you are less powerful than France, you're still very strong and once again can win the war by waiting
  • USA
    • If you want to go alt history and get involved early then its pretty fun and can be strong but there's a lot of negatives to deal with
    • The historical path is spectator mode.
    • By the time you can join in historical mode the Germans have already won or they are about to die in like a month.
  • Russia
    • Pain
    • endless pain
    • So as Russia you have a ton of negative maluses to overcome, and you have an enormous frontline to maintain with very poor industry to keep everyone supplied
    • You can go alt history and remove a lot of these maluses, but the industrial bottleneck I talked about earlier will still be present
    • If you start losing hard enough you will just begin to explode
    • The Russian Empire seems hard coded to lose at times
    • Soviets don't really have much to do other than fight the white movement which is painful Siberian no supply fighting.
  • Italy
    • Pain
    • Bad industry, bad army
    • Alt history can fix it
    • and even historical has options to give nice bonuses
    • luckily your main opponent is the Austrians so like its pretty much an even match
    • Like the rest of the entente, you can win just by defending which is easy for you cause mountains
    • Attacking is very difficult for you, cause mountains
    • Invest in strong mountaineers if you want to go anywhere
  • Germany
    • You are pretty strong, but not stronger than the entire Entente
    • However you are also a ticking time bomb
    • If you don't win the war fast enough you start getting increasingly worse negative spirits based on real life events such as the famine that Germany went through
    • Its much harder for you to deal with the Spanish Flu because you have a smaller faction
    • The war is going to get more difficult the longer it goes on
    • You can keep fighting but man its rough
    • AI germany will eventually capitulate in 1918 which is what I meant by you can win the war by just defending as the Entente
    • To win the war as Germany you actually have to break the lines of the entente which means you NEED to engage in costly offensives
    • You have a strong industry but not enough to reliably maintain huge offensives for a long time
    • You need to know enough about navy to beat the British otherwise you will never be able to trade for anything which means no rubber for planes
    • You are also the only competent major power in your faction. The ottomans and austrians will often need your help to not die.
  • Austria
    • More pain
    • once again you can go alt history to get rid of a lot of the negatives
    • however you do feel like a junior member compared to Germany in terms of industry and manpower
    • Your primary opponent will be Italy and Russia. luckily they also have a ton of negatives which means your actually fighting on a somewhat even ground
    • Your weak industry means you have a really hard time sustaining offensives
    • You have to deal with your allies. Germany is a ticking time bomb that will capitulate if it hasn't won by 1918 and the ottomans are the ottomans
  • The Ottoman Empire
    • Hey check it out more pain
    • You are the most junior member of the central powers and oh boy do you feel it
    • industry is pitiful, army is weak
    • once again going alt history can be a better idea
    • The British are going to be very annoying, however you're smart enough to use port guards
    • The limited frontlines work to your advantage cause you're always going to be fighting on small frontlines so you can concentrate your troops
    • Once again, your faction members are active threats to your existence
• I'm not going to cover all the minors but some of them can have a fun time
  • Romania is hell on Earth if you join the entente
  • Greece is the funny zone
  • Bulgaria is actually pretty strong for a minor
  • Serbia is 50/50 easy defense or hell on earth
  • The problem with minors is the industrial bottleneck hits even harder for them so if you don't have access to trade or the international market it can be very hard to sustain your army.

The Primarchs and the Astartes are pondering what lies ahead, and the attitudes are vastly divergent. For some, there will only ever be war (Sigismund comes to mind). Some are contemplating the fate of the Thunder Warriors, afraid of being disposable tools to be discarded once the galaxy is conquered. This fear have major impacts and is one of the factors leading to the betrayal of so many. On the other side, we have some with a more positive outlook: legions or Primarchs actively trying to make themselves useful to the Imperium beyond their initial function as tools of war. I can't help but ponder, in an alternate timeline, what might have been the role of the Legions and Primarchs in a setting without the Heresy, and would love to know your opinion on this.
Setup: Post-Ullanor. Erebus trips on a rock and dies on his way to Horus or something. It isn't too important as to "how" to get there, merely that we are at the point where things unfold in a more "expected" trajectory without grand betrayal. There is no widespread Chaos corruption. The Imperium is consolidating its peace time administration and conquest and frontier are replaced by long-term governance. The Emperor's project is continuing apace, but it will take centuries to complete and deploy (it was a ramshackle and rushed affair, as Vulkan pointed out).
Some Astartes legions are better fitted for this reality than others. There was always a post-crusade "cleanup" intended; which Legion falls where?
Tier 1: "Elevated" Legions: These Legions have been actively looking forward to doing some empire-building and are at the forefront of the new order, with a niche to fill.
III. Emperor's Children: This assumes no corruption on Laeran. Since their very beginning they were ever exemplars of the Imperium, even representing the Emperor for some time. Fulgrim have vastly varied interests beyond warfare, in the arts but in industry as well. He transformed Chemos from a dying rock to a thriving place. I am confident they would have a role to play.
VII: Imperial Fists: They were already assigned their very post-crusade role after Ullanor. Dorn is the praetorian of Terra, he completes the Palace, fortify the Solar Realm, and then the Imperium. They are the castellans of the new order.
IX: Blood Angels: Saguinius is beloved and very good at rebranding his sons. They would adapt fairly well, with their Primarch being a premier diplomat and propaganda tool.
XIII: Ultramarines: Administrators per excellence. That very scenario is their dream timeline; ultramarian reforms would potentially become more widespread and make the Imperium a more manageable polity.
XV: Thousand Sons: Magnus was also actively looking forward the post-Crusade world. Nikaea is an issue however. Assuming he doesn't crosses any line (I know, that's a big ask), Prospero could still act as a beacon of knowledge and education in the Imperium, that timeline's Alexandria. If the Emperor's dream involves humanity maturing into a psychic species, Magnus and his legion will have a key role to play.
As a bonus, Ahriman gets his vineyard.
XVIII: Salamanders: Both their love of humanity and their talents as craftsmen make them very suitable to that new era, I would say. Let them defend the everyman and craft wonders.
XX: Alpha Legion: [REDACTED]

Tier 2: "Kept around" Legions: These Legions stays mostly the same. There will always be uprisings here and there, or various events requiring a military response.
I. Dark Angels: The Lion is one of the Imperium's foremost generals, and the 1st Legion is the template for all others. I don't see them changing too much.
IV. Iron Warriors: Some amends will need to be made, but they are far from irredeemable. There might even be time for Perturabo to be finally building stuff; let him fortify the sectors close to the Eye of Terror as catharsis, and erect the occasional palace or odeon. The IVth is an industrious force and only their neglect during the Crusade prevents them from being in tier 1.
VI. Space Wolves: Let them be the Emperor's Executioners if that's what they crave. They won't build stuff, but are loyal to a fault.
X: Iron Hands They are one of those legions with little regard for civilian welfare I feel, yet they also have that "crafting" edge and links to the Mechanicum. I feel like they would be fine.

Tier 3: "Removed" Legions: These Legions need to go, and for one reason or another have no place in the "peacetime" Imperium.
VIII: Night Lords: They were already pariahs and on the verge of being branded for censure in the real timeline. Vale Dominus Nox.
XII: World Eaters: See VIII: Night Lords
XIV: Death Guards: Between their "war crimes!" specialty and Mortarion's bitterness I see little place for them. Just send the 1st if the objective is xenocide.
XVII: Word Bearer: In a post-Monarchia timeline, it is a wonder they maintained the charade of their loyalty for so long. Any closer look at this legion will end up with them joining the II and the XI.

Tier: I don't know
V: White Scars: Hard to say. They are part of the Imperium out of pragmatism. With the Crusade complete, would they just fly away into the (galactic) sunset? They were mistrusted by the Terran court, despite their immense worth in the end.
XVI: Sons of Horus: The most celebrated Legion for much of the Crusade, and yet made up of gangers. I am uncertain of their role; they were as well. Possibly tier 2.
XIX: Raven Guards: I wish I knew them better. Possibly tier 2.

Let me give a bit of backstory for my SaaS.
I started working on it just over a year ago as a means to sharpen up my coding skills. I wanted to learn how to develop APIs to make myself more desirable in my industry. At the time I started it, I never really intended for it to be anything more than a side project. I was in no real rush to get out an MVP.. I was just taking my time and going with the flow.
But in the last few months I came across this subreddit and got inspired that I could maybe transform this to a viable income stream so long as the product is worthwhile to businesses. I then added Lemon Squeezy as the payment processor so I'm ready to accept paying customers right out the gate.
With that said, I'm a coder by trade and marketing is not my specialty. I never heard of an MVP until I discovered this subreddit. Creating a watchlist never crossed my mind. As such, I have no real momentum in terms of early adopters, beta users, anything.
And maybe most importantly, I did not validate my product whatsoever. I think I spent maybe 20 minutes googling for competitors before I started building it out, and I found a few, but it didn't deter me because like I said my intention was just to learn. I've since found out that the market is totally saturated. I'm seeing this as a good thing however, because it tells me this kind of tool will always be in demand (I hope).
This brings me to today, and I can say I think the product is finally ready to launch! It's not finished though. I plan to add much more interesting templates, and payment links, but it's at a state that it can be used by businesses.

“So, what do you think?”
Kani brandished their mask in front of Chris, showing it off like it was an As Seen on TV product and they were a hand model. The two reclined on the couch of Hodder House, sipping tea and waiting for everyone else to gather for the team’s second bimonthly therapy session since taking on some new recruits.
“It’s gorgeous,” Chris took it delicately into his hands, turning it over. “I love the interaction between the blue and pink and white. Did you make this all yourself?”
“I got the mask from some template, but the decoration’s all me. I also painted my hammer to match; it’s still drying upstairs though,” Kani took their mask back, looking over it fondly. “So what about you? Did you come up with your superhero identity like we talked about?”
Gar crashed onto the couch, popcorning Chris lightly into the air. “What’s this about superheroes?”
“Gar, how’d you come up with Beast Boy?” Kani asked. “Like the name.”
“Well, I was a boy. And then I thought, huh, I can turn into beasts. And then I was Beast Boy,” Gar wore a self-aware grin. “I considered some other options, but Animal Man was already taken, so.”
“We’re trying to be superheroes like you, Gar. Kate as well,” Chris explained. “I have a code name in mind although I’m not sure if it’s that good.”
“What is it?” Gar asked.
“Well, I used to feel like such a burden to those around me, and I still do, slightly. But now that my other form has changed, I think I need a new title to accompany it. I was thinking I would go by Blessing, although I’m not sure if it is too sentimental,” Chris smiled sheepishly.
“Aww, that’s so cute!” Kani playfully punched Chris’ shoulder. “It’s a little cheesy, but we can try it out. For my code name, I kept trying to come up with stuff but it wasn’t really working, so the best I can come up with is Porcelain.”
“Porcelain? Why?” Gar eyed Kani’s mask, the materials of which Gar couldn’t tell, but it was definitely cheaper than porcelain.
“Okay listen, I was thinking of how I make things brittle and I can’t do much with that. The Brittler? So I was like okay, what are things that break easily? And Porcelain sounds kinda cool and mysterious. So yeah,” Kani explained.
“Well, I support it. They’re better names than Coagula,” Gar shouted out the last word, drawing the attention of Kate, who was chatting in the kitchen with Holly, one of the former members of the Siblinghood of Dada.
“Why is my name being used in vain?” Kate walked over to the group, Holly trailing behind her.
“Oh no real reason, we’re just sharing our favorite venereal diseases,” Gar quipped before being lightly smacked by Kate on the shoulder.
“Haha, very funny. At least my name is less juvenile than Beast Boy,” Kate chuckled. “You’re a grown-ass man.”
“It’s a legacy!” Gar protested, his attention being drawn by everyone settling into a loose circle in the living space.
Jane led this movement, settling into a large armchair. Others in the circle included Dorothy, Arani, Jamal, new recruits Bobby and Milkman Man, and the ever-floating Fog misting above the crowd. The Fog seemed to be more settled than they were last meeting, no longer darting around nervously. Bobby also seemed anxious last meeting but had less of a grimace this time. Milkman Man had always been sturdy, drinking a glass of milk politely.
“So, hi everyone. Does anyone want to go first?” Jane asked, and a hand immediately shot up.
Surprisingly, it belonged to Arani, who usually took a lot of coaxing to share anything.
“Sure, Arani. Go ahead. What’s on your mind?” Jane sipped a cup of tea, cross-legged.
“I’m sorry to hijack this session before it begins, but it’s an urgent situation. I’ve received some bad news from back home. For context, I came here fleeing my father. His name is Ashok Desai. He works in organized crime and has brutally controlled my life and that of everyone in our neighborhood,” Arani took a deep breath as if sharing this information strained her.
“This has been happening for a while. What’s new is that apparently, his control has expanded and his oppression worsened. He’s effectively made himself lord of most of the city, imposing curfews and regulations and taxing or punishing anyone who breaks his arbitrary rules. He likes exercising cruelty whenever he can. He’s been able to accomplish this as he has acquired new abilities. I’m not sure exactly what these are, but this fact doesn’t surprise me.”
“Anyway, I wanted to bring this up because I’m actually… unsure of what to do about the situation,” Arani concluded.
Everyone took all that in. Kate broke the silence, “Well, what are your options?”
Arani took a moment to form her words. “I could ignore it all and stay safe here. As far as I know, he and his men are constantly looking for me. This new expansion could even be a ploy to get me back. It would be safest for my survival to remain as far as possible, and let him come to me if he must.”
“Yet, on the other hand, I see a grave injustice. I could travel to India, and risk my own life in the process, mostly to help others harmed by his regime. I could stop Ashok Desai once and for all, and prevent him from hurting anyone else. I’m not sure which course of action to take. If any of you have any thoughts, I would appreciate hearing them,” Arani exhaled deeply, looking focused at the floor.
“Organized crime is no joke,” Milkman Man spoke up. “We ought to do something about this.”
“I see what you’re saying, but let’s not get overzealous. This is clearly very personal for Arani and she might not want our interference,” Jane moderated.
“Well, does she want our interference?” Holly asked while swaddled in blankets, her deadpan voice barely able to register a questioning tone.
“If I do go, some backup might be appreciated,” Arani nodded.
“If you’re scared of getting hurt, we can protect you,” Dorothy offered. “And then what would be the harm in going?”
Arani still looked unsure.
“Are you scared of it being difficult, emotionally?” Chris asked gently.
Arani looked down without a word.
“It’s ultimately your call, but we’ll be there for you either way,” Jamal chipped in.
The room was silent for a few moments, Arani staring seemingly into space, completely still. In her mind, she was looking at so much, at all she had experienced in her first family and this new one. She reflected on how her father sought to whip her into shape to survive anything the world could throw at her. But she was tired of merely surviving.
“I want to do it. I’m done with running,” Arani announced.

“Take a picture, it’ll last longer,” Bobby, the Love Glove, quipped as he settled into a meditative pose. A couple of team members gawked at him, notably Gar, as the rest began to prepare or suit up for the mission. “Alright, here I go.”
A wave of psychedelic yellow-orange-purple-green swirls washed over Bobby, enveloping him. He then blinked out of existence, his onlookers exchanging excited glances as this was the first time they had witnessed him leaving for a visit to the Glove Tree. Bobby meanwhile found himself in a liminal void, a grassy mound poking out of the endless sea. Bobby walked up towards the domineering Glove Tree atop the mound, various specialty gloves swinging submissively in the soft wind. The curvature of the tree was strangely erotic, mimicking sensual lumps and contours of flesh that seemed to beckon Bobby to come. He was smitten with the tree, strolling past it and running his one-gloved hand over its sumptuous roots and bark.
Eventually, he remembered what he came for, pressing his hand into the tree to signal he was ready. With a whispering flash of light, Bobby’s current glove was replaced with a purple one, the Portal Glove. Bobby stepped away lazily, reluctantly waving goodbye to his lover. And then he blinked back to our dimension, startling those around him.
“I’ve got it blokes. Are we ready?” Bobby looked around, seeing a team well assembled.
Coagula and Beast Boy were in their signature super suits, and they stood besides Porcelain and Blessing who donned their ramshackle costumes for the first time. Deadly Six equipped himself with several firearms and blades to accompany his manipulative abilities and was showing Dorothy Spinner how to use a baton for self-defense. Celsius had also taken a few weapons from Jamal’s cache, not wanting to only rely on her natural powers.
“I think we’re ready. Ready, Arani?” Jane turned to her friend, who nodded. “Let’s go then.”
Love Glove stretched his non-existent arms out wide before projecting an open palm forward. A portal shot out of his glove, purple and spinning dizzyingly at the edges. The team filed through one by one, Bobby the last to hop through. Closing the gateway behind him, he looked around to see an imposing building in front of him. Architecturally it was a strange mix of palatial tradition and a gritty industrial warehouse.
“This is my father’s headquarters. We’re in western Kolkata, but he has goons all over the city at this point,” Arani debriefed the team, a rifle slung over her shoulder. “There’s going to be guards crawling all over the place and as soon as they see anything out of the ordinary, i.e. us, they’ll know what’s going on and won’t hesitate to attack. The plan is for you guys to distract them while I search for and eliminate Ashok. Ready?”
The team nodded, some more enthusiastic than others. They weren’t all cut out to be superheroes and most had little combat experience, but they were here to help a friend. Feeling a novel feeling that people had her back for once, Celsius turned around and led the charge, jogging towards the front door. It was the middle of the night, helping cover them, but Arani wasn’t that concerned with subtlety.
Arani jostled the locked door, turning back to her team for assistance. Chris stepped forward, his white and gold supersuit shining slightly in the moonlight. He quickly shed it for a brighter form anyways, transforming into a large ball of divine might. With his large wings and wheels, he burst through the front facade of the building, sending wood and metal flying. The rest of the team piled in behind him, Arani now at the back of the clump, but still on high alert.
Alarms began to sound at the intrusion, and after a few beats of silence armed people began arriving. To the dismay of Arani and others, instead of just the able-bodied men she was accustomed to, these goons appeared to include children. There were also a few women, signaling that Ashok had expanded his direct control over more people than ever. Shouts came from the guards, in Bengali which none of the Totally Not Doom Patrol understood, and Arani wasn’t going to blow her cover by translating.
After not getting the response they wanted, the goons opened fire, and the team reluctantly shuffled forward, hesitant to harm the armed forces that contained child soldiers. Blessing and Fog tried to absorb most of the bullets with their surface area and Coagula worked to dissolve as many as she could, but the real intervention came from Milkman Man. He leaped forward high into the air, attracting fire, before slamming like a comet directly into one man, splattering him all over his comrades.
“Milkman Man, no!” Jane cried out, rushing forward.
“What? These thugs must be stopped!” Milkman Man protested, his white suit somehow still perfectly pristine.
While this played out, Arani stole off towards another direction, attracting no attention. She slipped through the dark hallways, only illuminated by the red light of the alarms. When people rushed by towards the grand kerfuffle, she ducked into side passageways. She knew the complex relatively well from earlier days when she was allowed to explore it, her father sometimes seeking to groom her to be his heir. At other points, he merely sought to keep her under lock and expunge her imperfections, by committing sins himself.
This all flooded back for Arani as she made her way into Ashok’s principal laboratory, hoping to potentially find him there, working late at night. She didn’t know if she was disappointed or not to find him absent, the room eerily silent. Still, pausing for a moment, she circled the room, looking for anything that could help her and being sucked into the past.
She thumbed over a stack of papers, already divining their nature by the cover page. Ashok may have been a crime lord, but he also kept his scientific research professional. He came from poverty and rose through the ranks of scientific academia, rapidly becoming a well-known figure in the area. However, he had a chilling secret, or rather alter ego, moonlighting as a masked crime boss to fund his wild experimentation. He had always had an interest with things outside of the mainstream, that other professionals even considered unethical. Therefore it wasn’t much of a leap for him to work outside of the law, and he reveled in the financial and political winnings he stumbled upon in the world of organized crime.
A particular recent research interest for Ashok was interdimensional portals, although differently from the leading research in gateways to other earths like our own. He had heard of dark pocket dimensions said to be inhabited by otherworldly, mystical beings outside of human comprehension. He was interested in these realms, hoping to study their alien compositions and/or even use their boons against his enemies. Shortly before Arani fled her home, he got his wish. He discovered a portal to a dimension of horrifying creatures, and he began making plans to use their frightening power to further solidify and expand his reign.
This colored Arani’s decision to leave, and it reminded her of the task at hand. She wasn’t going to get any more of her search, so she moved to regroup with the team to see if they had discovered anything. She worked her way through the winding hallways by following the loudest noises. The strategy worked, bringing her to her support group turned militant task force. They thankfully had disarmed and tied up all of their assailants, some looking a little more beat up than others. Milkman Man stood slightly apart from the rest of the group, looking into the distance. Kani examined their hammer for wear and tear, while Dorothy cautiously approached Milkman Man.
“Hey, I know you and Jane just said some harsh things, but it’s okay! I didn’t get everything right my first try either. I’m still learning a lot, I mean this is my first big mission too,” Dorothy put her hand on Milkman Man’s reassuringly, and he didn’t pull away. “You made a big mistake, but Jane always tells me that you can always bounce back, no matter how big the mistake. Do you want to rejoin us, just being a little more careful this time?”
Milkman Man breathed back milky tears, taking Dorothy’s hand to rejoin the others. “I wouldn’t mind that one bit, thank you miss.”
Meanwhile, spotting Arani, Kate ran over to her. “Hey! Find anything?”
“No,” Arani replied. “Did they tell you where Ashok is?”
“Nope, they won’t talk,” Kate responded.
“Then we’ll have to force it out of them,” Arani resolved, walking towards one man with her rifle pointing menacingly at him.
Picking up on the vibe, Jane stepped in front of her comrade. “Hey, hold on. Whatcha doing?”
“I’m going to get information out of this man, whether he wants to give it or not,” Arani said plainly.
“Torture? I know that you have a lot of history with your father - “
“Call him Ashok.”
“...with Ashok, and you can do whatever you will with him, but we have to draw our lines somewhere to avoid putting more misery into the world. These people are likely roped into this position by systems of oppression and have been forced into this,” Jane pleaded.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about. Some of these faces are a surprise to see, but these men, I know their brothers in arms. They do not merely choose to be here, they relish in the violence and the oppression of myself and countless others. The only thing separating most of them from my father is they haven’t had the chance yet to slit his throat and take his crown,” Arani pushed past Jane, getting ready to use her powers to broil the man until he croaked.
“Arani, please,” Jane stopped that thought as a loud growling noise echoed from down the hallway.
Everyone stopped and looked in the direction of the noise, their spines prickling with fear. A beat of suspense passed, and then a wet patter could be heard in the darkness, getting closer and accompanied by snarls. Under the flashing red lights, the vague outline of something started to appear. At first, this seemed to be difficult due to the dim lighting, but the approaching thing seemed to have a shape and anatomy that defied earthly conventions.
It passed through a certain corridor of shadow, making its form visible. Its head peeked out first, almost dog-like with pointed ears and a pig-like snout, large fangs dripping with spit and curling around and around in strange formations. The rest of its body seemed to follow a cylindrical shape with cancerous lumps and sharp blades of flesh poking out at odd angles. It brought its hind legs up behind it, standing up to emit an uncanny roar.
Swiftly, the monster was joined by countless other Lovecraftian beasts. They were mounds of flesh and eyes and pointed edges and alien tendrils, some merging or literally bleeding into each other like a mad science experiment. Some looked almost disturbingly humanoid, while others were utterly alien, appearing like nothing human eyes were meant to see. These were Ashok’s extra-dimensional evil creatures, having escaped onto our plane of existence with his help. They emitted all sorts of strange unintelligible sounds, and variously pounced, dragged, or sliced towards the Totally Not Doom Patrol.
As a crazed battle commenced, Arani tried to shout above the noise, including that of her rifle as she unloaded it into the oncoming wave. “These are Ashok’s creatures! He must have set off a portal nearby! I need to-” Arani groaned; getting through all of these demons wouldn’t be easy or quick.
“Need help getting past? We help with that, we can,” The Fog spoke slowly, many voices struggling to articulate together.
Arani nodded, raising her hand to drift into the Fog’s mass. It kneeled to absorb her, carrying her away into it. Arani momentarily found herself in a strange misty forest, a brief reprieve from the tangible world of combat. She quickly exited though as she was spat out of the thought-cloud, having ridden over the crowd of monsters. This part of the corridor transitioned into glass walls, moonlight filtering in. However, there was no evident stable portal around. Instead, or indeed, she saw her father, Ashok Desai.
In terms of his face, he looked mostly the same as he always had, wearing a cold expression. However, he now possessed scars across his skin from where Arani had burned him when they last parted ways. In addition to this change, he wore a bizarre suit of armor. It was a jarring clash of green and silver chrome, a sort of exoskeleton that wrapped around his body and contained several embellishments, including pipes pumping some sort of liquid. Under a green hood two chrome horns poked out just above his forehead, casting dramatic shadows across his face.
And most notably, his torso was framed by red plating resembling a gaping maw that could chomp down any minute. Within the wide-open mouth, his chest was a literal cavity, an endless void that seemed to go on forever. After a moment of staring, Arani realized that he himself was the portal to the dark dimension.
“What have you done to yourself?” was all Arani could muster, her body losing all of the steam it had now that she was actually face-to-face with her tormentor once more.
“You should be answering that yourself, little girl. Who are these freaks you’ve enlisted to aid you in this little outburst?” Ashok snarled, his formerly suave voice having cracked into a bite, even more so with these recent transformations.
Arani’s mind was too overwhelmed to respond. Seizing the opportunity, Ashok grabbed her by the shoulder. Her body instinctively responded to swat him away, but his suit seemed to magnify his strength. With this surprising strength, he threw her out of the nearest window, crashing through the glass. She landed in the central courtyard of the building, a once-lush garden that had fallen to the wayside as of late. Arani was cushioned by a bush and thankfully not having fallen any floors.
As she regained her senses and looked back up to where the rest of her team should be, she saw the Fog and Jane, the former having carried the latter over in concern. Ashok ignored them, stepping through the glass to hobble towards his daughter. With her body language, Jane asked Arani if she needed any backup, readying a fireball from one of her heroic personalities. Arani shook her head. This was her fight. Jane was worried but also appreciated the decision as her people were extremely busy already with the monsters Ashok had unleashed.
As Ashok neared his daughter, she scrambled to her feet and repositioned her rifle, pointing it right at his face.
“Ah, you’re going to kill me? Just like you killed your mother,” Ashok tsked. “I won’t say I’m surprised.”
Arani quivered, her resolve failing her. “I didn’t kill her! It was her choice to bring me into this world. She would mourn to see what you did to her daughter after she birthed her.”
“She wasn’t as stubborn as you. She would find what I did and who I’ve become to be glorious,” Ashok gestured up and down his body. “Look at me. I have become Kalki, the 10th incarnation of Vishnu, a god in my own right. I will return us to the Satya Yuga now, cleansing the world of its conflict.”
“You’re insane. How would anything you’re doing stop conflict?” Arani spat.
“A cataclysm must first occur to lead us into a new age. I have found a shortcut to that cataclysm in other worlds, and I will find more. People may suffer now, yes, but that is the way of things,” Ashok looked up, seeing the sky begin to brighten as morning neared. “A new day is rising. You can still return to me, join me, and witness greatness. I will protect you, and cleanse you, and purify you before I purify the world.”
Ashok had always been deranged, but he seemed more off-kilter than ever to Arani. His eyes had a crazy look in them and his body heaved with each breath. The exoskeleton was holding him together, but the void in his chest seemed to be almost caving in on itself, sucking in more flesh over time.
Arani almost chuckled. These were the last howls of a dying dog, and she remembered why she had returned to this place. She tossed aside her rifle, looking down at her hands as pure elemental power coursed through them.
“You couldn’t purify me of anything. Not least my abilities, which I wish you could. But they’re a part of me. This pain that I always carry with me, it cannot be downplayed or ignored or excised. And I would rather use these wicked, painful, sinful powers to kill you, than anything else in this world. Yes, out of spite,” Arani’s mouth was a fierce line, but her eyes were smirking.
Kalki roared gutturally, producing an attached metal scythe from one arm of the suit. He charged at Celsius, swiping through the air with surprising speed, but still little dexterity or coordination. Arani bobbed and weaved, putting up ice walls when the blade got too close for comfort. She then burst the ice outward, pushing forward her left hand to release a plume of ashy smoke. Ashok hacked and coughed at the emission, twirling away to produce another scythe on the other hand. As he brought the scythes down towards Arani, he resembled a praying mantis, eyes bugged out.
Arani wasn’t quick enough to dodge, forming a forcefield of ice around herself that Ashok hacked away at like a wild animal. Taking a moment in her refuge to analyze the situation, she looked all over Kalki’s suit for any edge. The pipes running around the exoskeleton caught her eye, surely transmitting some sort of enhancing or even vital juice to get him to operate on this level.
Waiting until a perfect moment in Ashok’s attack cycle, Arani broke the ice shield and scurried backwards, quickly flinging out shards of ice specifically aimed at the pipes. Her aim was mostly true, and Ashok howled in discomfort, staggering back as the liquid coursing through him and his suit began to spill out on the grass. Feeling in control, Arani then feinted backward before lunging forward, pushing a torrent of white-hot flame smack into Ashok’s front.
He apparently planned for this as his suit put up some sort of static defense field, but it was flickering inconsistently, likely due to Arani already puncturing his functioning. As his field began to wear away, a couple of creatures pushed through it and his chest, having prominent humanoid skulls and bone-like protrusions. Arani didn’t get a good look at them as they melted away, not even able to escape the stream of flame to reach her. Hearing her father really shouting in pain now, Arani paused the fire so he could hear her words.
“You tortured me to be tough, to always watch my back. I have friends now who make sure my back is well protected. But you? Yours isn’t looking too hot,” Arani spun the grunting Ashok around, his arms hanging limp at his sides.
Arani conjured a small wall of ice that pushed through Ashok’s back, breaking through the metallic suit, into his skin and his innards to crack it open. The void across his chest now ballooned into his back, his whole midsection becoming a portal to hell. His form was destabilized and he began to be sucked into himself, cracking apart and disappearing. The last thing Arani saw of Kalki were his bugged-out eyes, finally seeming unsettled and experiencing the true terror she had once felt. Arani shut her eyes. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to remember that image forever or never have seen it.
When she opened her eyes, she saw that the portal had blinked itself out of existence. Her teammates began filing into the courtyard, following the trail of glass. They were covered in alien excretions and bits, the monsters having faded away as soon as their lifeline between worlds was cut off. Still, they mostly looked concerned for Arani, who was covered in sweat and blood.
The gravity of the moment hitting her, Arani once again couldn’t form a sentence. But she didn’t need to, as she communicated by running up to her found family and grabbing onto them, forming a huge group hug. Everyone reassured each other, pouring their hearts into the clump. They then settled into the courtyard, appreciating its natural beauty still poking through the disarray and lack of care. As the sun began to rise, the group was drawn back out into the broader world by the whir of helicopters.
Arani looked up, watching as news channels local and international had gotten alerted to the superhuman scene and wanted to get the scoop. But amidst the helicopters and the morning ways, a bright yellow dot zipped down towards the group like a ball of tiny lightning. The ball expanded to a full person, the superheroine Karen Beecher, a.k.a. Bumblebee. Her black and yellow combat suit shone as she approached the loosely clumped group, not sure who to speak to.

“Yup!” Beast Boy nodded enthusiastically, shifting his arm back from an alien tendril inspired by a creature he had just taken down.
“Well, do you all need any assistance the Justice Legion can provide you? Should I talk with the authorities before you go?” Karen was a bit confused about what exactly had happened here.
Before she could question further, Kate approached Karen, bouncing on her heels. “Hi Bumblebee! Huge fan! I don’t know if you recognize me, but I’m Coagula! Anything I touch I can dissolve or coagulate, transmuting-”
“Oh hey, I do recognize you, you and Beast Boy over there. I read an article, you were seen with him fighting crime and filming it or something?” Karen didn’t really read the article.
“Yeah, that’s me! I fight crime a lot, but the filming was actually to get your attention. If you guys are full up on members I get it, but I think you’re missing out on a pretty sweet deal if you don’t consider me for membership. I’m down for any sort of tryout or application I have to do, but I would just love to make the world a better place in an even bigger community!” Kate finally got to say parts of her fantasy pitch she had rehearsed.
Karen eyed Coagula up and down. “Eh, alright. There is no traditional path to becoming a member. Why don’t I have you my contact information and we can talk about getting you an invitation?”
Kate jumped for joy. “YESSSSSSS! Yes! Ahem, thank you. Let’s stay in touch.”
After a few more exchanges and Bumblebee flying off, Jamal leaned over in a hushed voice to speak to Jane. “Let’s head out soon. I like that they got me on camera, because it probably means the underworld will stop coming for me. Their guy wouldn’t be seen with a bunch of weirdos saving the day. But this is a bit too much public exposure now.”
Reporters, locals, and officials trying to cordon off the reporters and locals, began approaching the team, trying to discern the story. Jane nodded, but before she could do anything Arani was being swarmed by the press.
“Are you Ashok Desai’s daughter? What are you doing at his headquarters? Are you here to liberate Kolkata?” The crowd’s voices rang out. “If Ashok is gone, what do you plan to do with his holdings and research? His forces?”
Arani, after regaining her overwhelmed bearings, bluntly pushed the microphones and reaching hands away. “That’s not my problem anymore.”
The gesture was simple, but it spread a smile across Crazy Jane’s face. She hugged Arani, aiding her flight from publicity by pulling her back towards the rest. Chris was in human form again, trying to get Kani to resist the temptation of fame. Dorothy rode on Milkman Man’s shoulders, playing with Holly’s hair from her new vantage point. Everyone came together as Bobby readied a new portal, projecting it where the sun hit just right so that they seemed to be walking off into the sunrise. They crossed through the gateway, ready to enter a new, yet continuous, phase of their journey.
