2024.05.17 09:29 ArtificialAnaleptic In defense of "male power fantasy"

I originally started writing this in response to a meme post and it got out of hand so I've tried to write it up fully. The context was that this was in response to a joke video about the Custodes thing that concluded that GW just want to sell more models to women (which I agree with, they like money):
Let ignore for a moment whether female Custodes would result in more women buying/playing warhammer though.
The "just want's more women to get into the hobby"-bit is something that I think a lot of people have struggled to articular a reasonable answer to. There is a sense in which the answers have ended up looking like a saying "women shouldn't be in the hobby". Which is not the case. So let me give this a go:
Some hobbies should be male-dominated, male-coded, and marketed/targeted at men.
While I don't think that's a controversial opinion here (though it would be elsewhere), I've yet to see anyone articulate a more detailed position as to why this is okay.
When the custodes thing dropped, there was a very insightful post by a woman in the main 40k sub about her experience with the Lorcana community. She explained that she had noticed early that the game was much more clearly "female-coded" (to use her wording).
In other words, aspects of the game were more explicitly targeting her gender. And so despite it being still about a 50/50 split of men to women in her FLGS she felt like it was much more approachable than say MTG, though she'd played both in small local tournaments (i.e. she certainly gave the impression of being more than a passing tourist).
I thought this was interesting in so far as it speaks to the fact that there are (again, probably not shocking to anybody in this sub) fundamental differences between men and women ON AVERAGE in terms of the things that they are interested in.
There is also then a compounding effect. So even a small shift in marketing that leads to a roughly 55/45 gender split INITIALLY can cause onlookers to think "sausage-fest" and stay away, leading to an EVENTUAL 80/20 or higher male/female split.
In other words, something that broadly appeals but with slight male-bias will often end up being very male dominated. And vice-versa. Over time this can also become culturally compounded such that it becomes quite ingrained.
Why does this matter?
Because women are encouraged to have female spaces. They're encouraged to practice self-care, express themselves, and a host of other positive-mental-health promoting activities.
Men receive this encouragement in purely theoretical terms. But the things that would actually support this in a male context are now much more often demonized: controlled violence/sparring and fighting, male dominated spaces, shit-tests/banter, "safe"-competition: like, for instance, war gaming. Men are VOCALLY encouraged to have better mental health but this is almost exclusively done by PRACTICALLY suggesting that they behave more like women: "share their emotions, talk, open up, be vulnerable".
I don't want to read massively into what is, at the end of the day, hobby drama about toy soldiers. There are more important things in my life.
But it is striking to me how much it is recognized that men are, mentally speaking, not doing amazing right now. But rather than say, look to build "safe spaces" and environments to foster their well-being, we demonize things that bring them joy and allow for escapism.
Warhammer is a masculine (if not "male") power fantasy (inb4 "warhammer is for everyone"). Adding women under certain conditions does detract from that and does make it a less viable option for male escapism. This says nothing of the many interesting female characters in-universe. It is not inappropriate for some people to feel disappointed about something that impacts their ability to find enjoyment.
In the modern world, there are few opportunities for some men to spend upwards of 3-4 hours in a non-work context, enjoying themselves with other men. Particularly if you take drinking out of the picture, which is not always healthy self-care for some. And war gaming represents something that is physically widely accessible (though you should work out).
Addendum: Obviously this speaks to averages. There are plenty of talented male and female war gamers/hobbyist/painters. But as I've explained, even a small shift in a particular direction can cause something to be dominated one way or another. Something being male or female dominated shouldn't outright prevent men or women from engaging but might make them less likely to or feel hesitant to do so. But equally, women or men shouldn't feel that they have to give up/mediate their options for self-care and enjoyment for one another.

2024.05.13 21:18 mrsnakers I'm taking a big break from DaD. Here are my thoughts on the game's state in retrospect.

First, I'd like for us all to acknowledge how, uhhh, for lack of a better term toxic this game and community has become. In doing so, it's probably best for our own souls to simply acknowledge that we ourselves behave more toxically in this game than perhaps other multiplayer games. I know I personally do not get into heated arguments / name call / and 'git gud' other players in other games nearly as much as this one.
Often I've thought it's simply because I just care about this game so much or that it's simply a reaction to other players who really are toxic unlike me.
But let's be honest with ourselves - it's all of us.
However, it's not entirely our fault.
-- Here are my observations upon taking a break and going back to some old school games in the same genre (specifically, I've started playing Ultima Online again - which SDF emphatically told Terry is his primary inspiration for this game). --
When I first launched this game, like many of you - I expected something akin to a Dungeon and Dragons dive into the unknown. RNG was expected and yet, skill / knowledge should allow us to overcome some of that RNG and make the game work in our favor - at least for replayability's sake.
At first, that is how the game felt. Most players - like myself - had no clue what we were doing and were experimenting. The mobs felt scary, the minibosses near impossible, and extracting was a miracle that gave us a relief and a dopamine rush that made it all the stress feel worth it.
But as expected with practically everything in life once the mechanics are better understood, the mystery starts to wear thin. The same thing happens at a job, with political ideologies, hell the same thing happens when you get a partner. And this game is just a series of systems, so it's no exception to that rule. I fully expected some of the mystery to wear off, I fully expected to feel familiar with it after a certain point. What I didn't expect, was for the game to start feeling like a game of Counter-Strike where I am up against people with certain perks / aspects that make it feel akin to playing in a lobby where some people have hacks enabled and sometimes those players are me and my squad. (And certainly there are actual hackers no doubt, but I am not talking about that specifically. I am talking about how this game currently feels when everyone is "playing it correctly".)
Map knowledge, min-maxxing gear, perk and skill selection, comp selection are at an all time high right now (which again, was to be expected) but simultaneously - the end game content seems to simply be PvP, PvP, then when you're done and PvP some more.
This is where the game starts to feel like a CS lobby filled with hackers. This is where the frustration starts to build, and where I see a possible culprit as to why it's some common for people to be hardcore venting while being met with various "git guds" on this subreddit, discord, or simply being toxic dirtbags in VOIP. We didn't sign up for this kind of end-game but dammit if we didn't get addicted to it before it devolved and now - we're angry. We feel like we've lost something, but we can't stop trying to find it again.
The Dev's also feel like they've lost something and are trying to "find it again". They want to find balance, they want to maintain a healthy relationship with their player base, they want to compete with other games of a similar genre while maintaining their unique inspiration from late 90's hardcore fantasy games and DnD. In trying to search for this missing thing the devs have been twisting knobs back and forth in PvP balance for about a year now.
This is why it feels like we're being driven around by the devs in circles as we scream "take a left" and "No! Take a right!" and the devs seem to listen - we are all desperate to get back to that place where the game first captivated us and the mystery was strong.
How could such a feeling have been maintained, at least for longer? And how could the feeling of having lost it been staved off?
The simple answer (but truly complex if we're being honest) is this: The foundations of this game are not strong. The concept is strong but the foundation feels rushed to produce a playable version, rather than a quality vision.
One of those foundational issues is the modules, the zone / swarm, and maps themselves. The modules were advertised - some time ago - as being Dynamic. Meaning, each time you open a door to a new module you would not know what module you'll enter nor what creatures / loot may be hidden within nor how that module might connect with other modules.
I would argue that had Dynamic Modules been fully invested in and implemented from the start, the mystery could have been maintained for longer and the PvP "end game" might have been staved off in it's full edifice that has been erected today. Perhaps then even juiced players would have to deal with the RNG of the dungeon and callouts of "rotate" or "go on flank" would more often be supplemented with "fall back and regroup".
Also to blame is the swarm, forcing players to clear or avoid modules as fast as possible to avoid being left behind, and thus run into each other and forced to PvP.
I will also posit that the 'simple' mechanics of melee / ranged combat and the simplicity of movement and lack of meaningful evasion mechanics has been a failure in the foundational structure of this game. Had these areas been more 'cooked' then perhaps the game wouldn't be nearly as punishing - unfairly so - when one player simply out gears another or one squad simply rushes down another due to their comp. These very basic mechanics also mean that cheesing AI isn't just "the easy way to get through hell" but actually a preferred method in many occasions simply because once you get off rhythm, your ducking and mashing A vs D gets thrown off and you start to eat hits. It's not fun to dance around a Beserker and widdle him down and it isn't much more skillful than "I stood on a veiny Hell bloodclut and hit him in the head until he died".
This also affects compositions and how one team pushes into another. Half of the Trios gameplay is simply "Does their composition benefit from entering a doorway or holding it?" - what the fuck is that?
The simplicity of mechanics has also necessitated a simplicity of AI as an answer - if AI could climb, open doors, and properly scare the shit out of you - yet all you have to deal with them are these undercooked melee mechanics - you would get roasted by a basic Axe skeleton much more often than anyone would like to admit.
And yet, the lack of meaningful AI and mechanics means moving from module to module consists of opening a door, running past, and shutting it behind you. This might be good for when you're evading a buff ball team, but it also the same system that is enabling that team to begin with.
So here we are - the lack of dynamics modules and undercooked movement / melee mechanics has meant that the Devs have focused nearly entirely on balancing PvP rather than a core game-play loop. Entire systems and entire wipes have been devoted to "balancing" and creating QoL for these systems. Because if someone has better gear than you - they basically win - then gear needs to be stronger for beginners and thus a Squire and thus a Quest system and thus a Marketplace where the mystery and allure of items goes to absolutely die as everything in the game is accessible through gold. No longer does finding a piece of gear in the dungeon that fits your character hit in any meaningful way.
This is not a Dungeon Diver any longer. It will continue to bleed players, and new players who try it thinking "I like hardcore games, I like DnD, I like loot" will quickly turn it off once they realize it's just a shitty version of Counter-Strike but half of the lobby has speed hacks and extra damage and you do not.
Previously, I was for a Marketplace. Previously, I was all for GBMM. Previously, I thought I would one day be "good enough" to rock BiS because I will have mastered many difficult systems. Now it's just a matter of "do I feel like running BiS right now or not" - everything is so accessible that it has lost meaning and feeling and simply is a RNG of how geared the other team is on the map.
Now I'm more for self-found only gear, removal of marketplace, removing of GBMM, skill trees > Multiclassing - and I'd go so far as to say I think they need to turn this game off for a few months, put everything on a test server, and go back to fixing the foundation then relaunch it.
SKILL STILL EXISTS and I will never deny that - but it could exist in a more meaningful way with better foundational systems that do not force the entire game to devolve into PvP hit trading and door play.
TL;DR
The game's foundational systems are rocky and have turned this game into a PvP fest. The lack of Dynamic modules means the best compositions with the best items with better map knowledge will simply rush through and win. The fact that players often have better loot than half of the modules means that PvP is always the best bang for your buck. These incongruent foundations have devolved this game into a crappy version of Counter-Strike where half of the lobby has better damage / movespeed than you do. The melee / range and lack of meaningful evasion tools mean gear check will always be king and makes aforementioned "counterstrike feeling" feel ever worse. And yet, the devs - unable or unwilling or are simply blind to it - have instead been balancing the entire game around "PvP" for almost an entire year - taking up resources and time - because it's the one faucet of the game everyone agrees is causing issues. And yet, nothing has been done to prevent PvP engagement after PvP engagement from becoming the only real end-game content.
All of these foundational systems working incongruently are causing a fractured and toxic playerbase because we didn't sign up for a PvP fest, we signed up for a Dungeon Diving experience with a small squad.
I'll be playing Ultima Online Outlands in the meantime. I might check back on this game after sometime. I made a lot of cool friends and really enjoyed playing with some of you. My in game alias's were ThrustinTheseHips / Dolphin Lover - if you had a good time playing with or against me I will always cherish it! But boys, please take care of your mental health. This game can take a toll - no lies.

Kilpack Launches Dystopian Military Sci-Fi Trilogy with Battle Calm
W.D. Kilpack III, a native of West Jordan, Uta., had his sixth novel, Battle Calm, published on Amazon.com. This is the first book in a trilogy called the Battle Calm Cycle, set in a dystopian future. It is Kilpack's first hardcover release, but is also available in eBook and on Kindle Unlimited.
https://preview.redd.it/uypg3kt5f80d1.jpg?width=807&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6106b31b716bafc8414bf53a110d47d85e30e61c
Battle Calm centers around Badger, a Keeper, who is the greatest soldier alive. He knows to never celebrate victories, no matter how hard-won, because the enemy never stops. When Badger succeeded his father, Red Skin, as Keeper Base Leader, he was well prepared, raised to handle anything the enemy threw at him. He was the best killer, and the most respected tactician. He knew Red Skin’s Laws like he wrote them himself. Most importantly, he was always calm, no matter how frenzied the combat. These were only some of the reasons why he still had all his original parts. His two closest friends are Trinity, who would die for him, and Korry, who would follow him without question. They are all Keepers. They fight, they kill, they live to kill another day, even when it means bugging out to another Base ... and another. That is life when life is war. They know nothing else. But even war cannot last forever, regardless of the infallible truth of Red Skin’s Law #35: “Under conditions of peace, men attack themselves; thus, there never has been, and there never will be a time without war. It is the greatest, most perfect thing men can do.”
Kilpack said, "I wrote the very earliest drafts of these books when I was 14. Don't worry, they've been revised many, many times since then. I'm very happy with the state they're in now. The military aspect is much more authentic in a lot of ways, despite being a fictional branch of the military. Research and Q&A with some veterans went into restructuring that aspect of the story both through direct feedback and pointing me to the right places to dig and find out for myself."
Kilpack is an award-winning and critically acclaimed internationally published writer, with works appearing in print, online, radio and television, starting with his first publication credit at the age of nine, when he wrote an award-winning poem. He has since won 23 book awards, including The International Firebird Book Award, The BookFest Award, International Impact Book Award, both Editor's Choice and Top Pick from BooksShelf and Honorable Mention from L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future Contest for his novella, Pale Face, which was recently optioned for development for a Hollywood movie. He has been editor and/or publisher of 19 news and literary publications, both online and in print, with circulations as high as 770,000.
He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Westminster University. As an undergrad, he double-majored in communication and philosophy, while completing the Honors Program. As a graduate student, he earned a master of professional communication with a writing emphasis. He was also a high-performing athlete, qualifying for international competition in Greco-Roman wrestling.
For 25 years, he was a communication professor and a nationally recognized wrestling coach. He is an accomplished cook and has cooked nearly every type of food on a grill. He is happily married to his high-school sweetheart and is father to five children, as well as helping to raise five step-children. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he continues to live, consult and educate. For more information www.Kilpack.net
Praise for Pale Face
Pale Face is "pretty darned good. I like it. I love how [Hector] sees the aliens and the white men in the same light. A nice, brutal, ironic twist ... this is good stuff." — Dave Wolverton, international best-selling author
Praise for Crown Prince: Book One of New Blood
"Author W.D. Kilpack III presents an atmospheric and immersive journey into a richly crafted fantasy world, balancing a strong character-led adventure with a wider web of plots, setting up a highly complex and enjoyable fantasy saga to follow. There’s a clear flair for character, dialogue, and attitude from the start, with Natharr's intense presence affecting all who encounter him and making for some really dynamic clashes. The weightiness of his responsibilities and the depth of the world-building immediately gripped my attention and, as the story unfolded, the way the characters’ attitudes and actions were shaped by the realism of the worldbuilding was totally compelling. This book delivers on every promise of pulse-pounding adventure — thanks to the swift pacing of the plot, coupled with dark storytelling, strong descriptive skills, and captivating character development that balances emotion with duty well. Overall, I would certainly recommend Crown Prince as an incredible opener to an exciting new fantasy series, and I’m all the more eager to continue exploring this fantastical realm." — USA Today best-selling author K.C. Finn
Praise for Order of Light: Book Two of New Blood
"W. D. Kilpack III's Crown Prince captivated me. His vivid descriptions plunged me into a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and emotions. I devoured the first book in the New Blood Saga, desperate to see where the tale would lead. So, it was with bated breath that I cracked open Order of Light, the series' second instalment. Kilpack doesn't disappoint. The themes that resonated in Crown Prince deepen and twist in Order of Light. He has a way of making words just flow vividly on the page. On page 106 of my Australian paperback version, a revelation about Natharr, the Guardian of Maarihk, floored me! His journey of self-discovery weaves flawlessly with the Crown Prince's own remarkable growth. New fantastical creatures emerge from Kilpack's boundless imagination. The Quiet One and Bu, meticulously detailed in all their wonder, are testament to his storytelling prowess. But fear not, I won't spoil the magic! Suffice it to say, fans of epic fantasy, your search is over. Kilpack is your new literary lord. From exhilarating battle sequences to poignant moments of reflection, Order of Light is a masterpiece. If I could, I’d give it a six! Both it and Crown Prince deserve a place on your bookshelf. Trust me, you won't regret immersing yourself in Kilpack's world." — Jose F. Nodar, author of Books, Pens & Larceny (South Wales, Australia)
Praise for Demon Seed: Book Three of New Blood
"Demon Seed is the thrilling and fast-paced third book in the New Blood Saga ... Kilpack does not disappoint! Demon Seed is a shocking and brilliant tale that will reintroduce readers to characters we have come to love/be invested in. In this third book, the stakes are as high as ever and the story the reader is taken on will enthrall, captivate and excite its readers ... Kilpack from the beginning hooks his readers and keeps them enchanted to the very end. I have to recommend Demon Seed to readers that love epic fantasy! Demon Seed is one that is full of shocks, thrills, and twists and turns galore that will keep you on edge from beginning to end. [It] is an incredibly suspenseful novel and this is thanks to the wonderful author, whose work I love ... [Demon Seed] did not let me down, this saga has not lost its momentum or uniqueness. Kilpack is an exceptional author [who] knows how to flawlessly transport his readers into the story ... the descriptions are phenomenal ... Demon Seed is a magnificent and entertaining book that will easily entertain its readers for many hours! That is why I of course have to award this incredible book five stars!" — RedHeadedBookLover.com
Praise for Rilari: Book Four of New Blood
"Embark on a captivating journey with W.D. Kilpack III's Rilari: Book Four of New Blood, a tale that expertly weaves tension, mystery, and awe-inspiring heroism. Kilpack's world-building skillfully combines politics, magic, and ancient lore, creating a rich tapestry for readers to explore. The characters, especially Natharr and the Knights of Ril, are well-developed, and the dynamic between Nathan and his summoned companion adds depth and heart to the story. Kilpack successfully incorporates profound themes of resilience and unity into the gripping plot, leaving readers emotionally connected. Riliari is a triumph, offering an enthralling adventure filled with courage and the enduring spirit of humanity." — BooksShelf.com

That weightiness to his character was a key point of interest to me that comes across right from the opening pages, plunging right into the thick of it for a wonderful change of pace. Crown Prince is intriguing, grand, strange, and shadowed by ill-omens. It is Shakespearean." — Tom Mock, author of The Long Nights • "A very good book ... [and] a very great read! Natharr is very much tested as he strives to save the life of newborn Crown Prince Vikari. This book reads wonderfully, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know the story. It is full of pulse-pounding adventure and also features great, extensive world-building! Definitely a recommend from me!” — Philip Chase, Ph.D., medievalist and author of The Way of Edan • 5/5 Stars — "Author W.D. Overall, I would certainly recommend Crown Prince as an incredible opener to an exciting new fantasy series, and I’m all the more eager to continue exploring this fantastical realm." — K.C. Finn, USA Today best-selling author of The Book of Shade for Reader's Favorite • 5/5 Stars — "The literary creator in his act of creationism. Such is W. D. Kilpack III in his intriguing invention of Crown Prince: Book One of New Blood. Intermingling real world matters of both realm and state, and legendary phenomena of ancient times, Kilpack builds a mythical epic of worlds within worlds, all suspended in time and universal fantastical realism. He has crafted an imaginative tale perfect for lovers of mysticism, magic, ancient battles, romance, and supernatural fantasy. Natharr, the Guardian of Maarihk, is one of the Firstbborn [with] abilities like the gift of prophetic Sight, and he [is] charged with protecting and preparing the newly born prince of the realm, Vikari, until he is ready to take his rightful place as heir to his father’s throne. Set in a richly imagined and described enigmatic world, the story explores themes of family, love, friendship, destiny, time, and power. Adventure and action keep the reader quickly turning the pages ... deliver[ing] a strong narrative of structure, character development, and world building, which smoothly paves the way for the next book in the series, Order Of Light, which I cannot wait to read. Crown Prince is a masterful example of original storytelling, a phenomenal literary creation!" — K.L. Davidson, author of Ten Thousand Fields (British Columbia, Canada) • 4/4 Stars — "Crown Prince stands out with amazing descriptions, complex characters, and intriguing supernatural elements. Book one in the New Blood [Saga], the storyline is incredibly promising. The author has a flair for setting the scene and creating memorable characters. I absolutely loved the descriptive prowess of this author, the thing I enjoyed most about the book ... W. D. Kilpack III genuinely takes the time to help us immerse in the fantasy world, no matter if he describes a battle scene, a peaceful moment, or a mythological creature like a Hamadryad or a Manticore, he always manages to conjure the best images in our minds. The author does a great job of incorporating the supernatural elements in a general atmosphere of myth and legend ... there was nothing I disliked about this novel. I am rating Crown Prince 4 out of 4 stars ... fans of sword-and-sorcery fantasy will definitely find this novel a delightful read ... the series has the potential to acquire epic dimensions ... I am looking forward to reading the sequel, Order of Light."OnlineBookClub.org • 5/5 Stars — "I absolutely love Crown Prince! It is a very dark epic-fantasy story following a very intimate cast of characters. The way things unfold, you’re thrown into the thick of the action right from the beginning that sinks you in right. The way events unfold to the way characters come together, you cannot help but keep flipping the pages. By the end, I was so invested, I felt so intimate with these characters, that I had to find out what happens next, so I immediately ordered book two, Order of Light! It’s such a good story! It’s such a dark-but-good story, with very good character work, you get really close with these characters, and you can’t help but want to know what happens next!" — Usman, host of Bards and Books YouTube channel (British Columbia, Canada) • 5/5 Stars — With the maps and appendix, "the characters' names, titles, and the names of fascinating places all conjured up by the mind of W. D. Kilpack III [helped] me better understand the intricate facets of this novel. Creating worlds and characters is not a easy, but the author did an excellent job. Crown Prince has everything you want: intertwining sword scenes, the battles of a war, kings, queens, knights, magic, fairies, love, sex, great beasts, and unthinkable dangers thatNatharr has to endure. Kilpack puts you in the middle as Vikari starts to grow and learn. So does Natharr for he begins to love the child as his own. Kilpack's ability to crystally describe a scene [was] like I was taking part in a meal or a sword fight. Crown Prince flowed smoothly and any fan of fantasy will rejoice [and] if you have never read a fantasy novel (like me), this one will get you hooked into the genre." — Jose F. Nodar, author of Books, Pens & Larceny (South Wales, Australia) • 5/5 Stars — "Crown Prince is one of the most brilliant fantasy novels that I have ever had the pleasure of reading and a book I am now obsessed with! Crown Prince is an incredible, thrilling and memorable story that will take its readers on a journey like no other. Crown Prince captivated me from the first page thanks to the book's sharp literature and strong opening ... [the author] is not only a phenomenal writer for his flawless ability to capture his reader's attention, but he is also a great writer for his descriptive powers and characterization of characters which will hook his readers! Crown Prince is a sensational, thrilling and addictive story that will thrill you as well as entertain you." — RedHeadedBookLover.com • 5/5 Butterflies — "Crown Prince was such a delight to read! Normally, we don't see the child growing up ... or really get a chance to get attached to whoever raised him. This author took that trope, shook it up and turned it into something amazing! We get to see the heir as a baby, to see him grow up [and] develop that close bond a son has with his father. It's a really beautiful thing ... normally glazed over in this type of story ... but you get to see how strong their bond is. I'm so grateful! Something else I really enjoyed is how well Darshelle and Natharr played off each other. Often, they have deep conversations that involve a culture clash, where they may not agree with each other's perspective, but they are willing to try to understand. I [also] loved this author's world building, especially the magic forest and all the interesting creatures that live in it! The village of the cat-people was such a fun scene and so interesting showing the cat-people society and how it was different. It was really fun! If you don't grab yourself a copy of Crown Prince, you're doing yourself a huge disservice! It's a wonderful story and such a fun read!" — Madam Crystal Butterfly • 5/5 Stars — "Kilpack delivers a stunning blow to the belief that Indie-Fantasy is worth any less that its salt. Crown Prince is a well-crafted epic with unique plot mechanisms, well-developed and believable characters, and a world grounded in the visceral and the real. I could not recommend this series any higher!" — Clay Vermulm, co-host of Sinister Soup Podcast • 5/5 Stars — "A fantastic world of swords and magic! A very strong start to the series! W.D. Kilpack III does know how to draw a reader into a world of swords and magic. I found myself unable to put the book down, diving deeper into the fantastic world. I can say, that I am a fan of his work and will soon be reading Order of Light, the second book from the New Blood [Saga]." — BooksShelf.com • 5/5 Stars — Crown Prince is "a great mix of fantasy and action and adventure! It kept me on my toes the whole time and I was completely hooked! The world building in this book is amazing. I could read 20 books in this world. The fight scenes and characters are amazing. They pull you in so deeply ... that I didn't want to stop reading way past when I should have!" — Jay.Rae.Reads • 5/5 Stars — Crown Prince illustrates "the burden of knowledge and the responsibilities involved in being able to see the future. Natharr is a great hero: think Aragorn/Alanon/Teddy Roosevelt. He bears the burden of being Guardian of Maarihk with dignity but, at the same time, is human and has flaws, like having a bit of a temper. Darshelle is conflicted and a walking contradiction, being proud and strong, while still insecure and flawed. I love the world, where magic is more subtle, while there is another element that reminded me of Greek mythology, because the gods are real and took direct action in history. There is some violence, which seems to fit well within the framework of this world where epic fantasy and realism are intertwined." — Critic, Salt Lake City, UT • 5/5 Stars — Crown Prince is "a fantastic tale filled with all things beautiful, dark, and magical! Filled with adventure and drama! The author's world is absolutely stunning, and I can't wait to read the next installment in the story!" — Cherumanalil (Bangalore, India) • 4/4 Stars — Crown Prince is "an adventure full of thrilling moments [that] hook you right from page one. Each page has a new secret to unfold. This book made a mark on my mind and now I cam curious to read the other books in the series. I loved reading it and have rated it four stars. Books like these deserve the hype!" — Read With Emilee • 5/5 Stars — "From the start you are drawn into a world of fantasy. With each page, you want more. The author gives the feel you are the character fighting for your life and those you defend. A great read, with the power to keep you from putting it down. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in something new, with a twist and feel of a classic fantasy!" — Tom Carr, author of Talking to Yourself in the Dark • 4/4 Stars — Crown Prince is "an absolutely brilliant fantasy read ... [Kilpack created] a master introduction. The plot building was incredible. The journey sucks you in so much that you immediately want to carry on with the series. I'll definitely complete this series." — Twilight Reader (Wales) • 4/4 Stars — "If you're looking for something new with a a twist of classic fantasy, this is for you. It amazes me that someone can create an entire world from scratch with everything that this involes. Character building is wonderful and the descriptions of what happens are good. It is very detailed, so you get immersed in the story. Lots of things happen in this book. I loved this world. A new author I discovered and hope to read more from this author in the future!" — Rhianny DD Morris (South Wales, Australia) • 4.7/5 Stars — Crown Prince "transported me into a world where life-and-death situations were commonplace and everyone had a cause to fight for! The distinction between the Firstborn and the Aa was fascinating [and] really got me hooked! The characters are fantastic, descriptions of battles draw in you and there's a shock in every chapter! I love fantasy books and I'll add this to my pile of highly recommended sagas!" — Books with Gina (England) • 4.5/5 Stars — Crown Prince is like "watching a movie. The author has narrated ... in a very fluent and visual way. It is an adventurous and twisted novel that will always keep the reader wanting more. Every page is a new unfolding and a new mystery. The plot is exquisite and emphasizes important values like willpower, determination, and truth. A captivating read [especially] those in search of something abnormally smart!" — Reads.Nancy • 4.5/5 Stars — "Crown Prince is one of the most fantastic fantasy books that I have read so far! The book is a blend of thrills, mystery, fun, excitement, and drama! It has got everything that a good book should have. The plot is unpredictable and twisted. So much is happening all at once, but the smooth narration takes care of it all." — Just Pratibha (India) • 4/5 Stars — "A fantastic read! What a grand story in Crown Prince. I am very impressed with the writing and storytelling. Kilpack does a great job of building a world filled with princes, pasts that dictate the future. Kilpack details the scenes, filled with action, and brings the creatures to life! Crown Prince is filled with swords and sorcery, magic, myths and legends, that really bring it as believable. This author is a great storyteller. The story brings the reader on a superb journey. Who could ask for more when it's filled with magical/fantastical creatures and other interesting beings?" — Amy's Bookshelf • "Once I got into [Crown Prince], I struggled to put it down! The world Kilpack has created is so detailed and imaginative you can't help but be drawn in. This book is a fantasy that give you war, knights, romance and hidden dangers. It covers it all! As the first in the series, it sets the scene brilliantly ... I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy books and fairytales!" — Kat Books Teas Cakes (UK) • "I had the pleasure of reading Crown Prince and Kilpack — he makes maps, folks! — emphasizes detail. The characters are living real lives, even though it's a fantasy. It was well done! He built his world with great care and precision." — Ken Weene, Ph.D., co-host of the Let's Talk It Over videocast

9. "The future of Mankind relies on the Guardian of Maarihk. Can and ancient force, lost aeons past, overcome fate? "
  10. Despite growing power of the forces of chaos, there is a glimmer of hope as Natharr realizes that there are also forces of order in play. It is made plain when he and his comrades escape the faceless realm and Natharr’s Sight is released. It reveals just how strongly the world needs the Guardian of Maarihk and the return of the legendary Knights of Ril to the land where Mankind was created. Racing for home unwittingly leads to unearthing an ancient force created by the Olde Gods, believed lost aeons past. Meanwhile, Darshelle and the crown prince struggle to make the most of their lives without Natharr’s protection. Forced to make their own way, the fruit of Quiet One’s efforts comes fully to bear, as Nathan and his summoned companion reawaken the animus of the ancient wood. The ramifications are horrible and far-reaching, changing their world forever.
  11. • 5/5 Stars"Demon Seed is the third book in the New Blood Saga by W. D. Kilpack III is one hell of a ride and it simply cannot be described in just a few sentences. It just can’t! The author’s forte is his descriptive prowess when presenting a scene. Case in point, the meeting with Drah in the cave. I will not spoil it here for future readers but it is outright scary. Then Natharr acquires a new 'fan,' which requires a diplomatic touch. Add to that the moment when Nathan realises what he has become and how he struggles with all that it means with all of its far-reaching ramifications. The way the book manoeuvres through its many intricate facets left me exhausted but still wanting more! New characters intermingled with old characters. New revelations concerning Nathan were presented in ways that were fascinating, intriguing, and scary, all at the same time! Demon Seed is deep, raw, powerful, and entertaining. It is worth the time of starting with book one, Crown Prince, and relishing every page!" — Jose F. 2024.05.12 18:37 Complete_Win_3840 Damnation Game and Mister B Gone by Clive Barker

Just picked up a copy of each. Prepare me mentally for the horrors I'm about to experience? I loved weaveworld more than life it's self. I understand it's a different style. Are we talking hellraiser body horror and gore fest? I've been trying to find scarier than weaveworld but not as utterly Disgusting as Scarlett Gospils was. I love Imajica, Wraveworld, the Great and Secret Show but I understand those are fantasy influenced. Scarlett gospels truly shocked me to my core lol.

2024.05.12 16:16 RighteousVengeance What are Your Top Five Misfits songs? How About the Five Worst?

I've seen a few posts on YouTubes where the author shares their opinions as to the top five songs of Jem and the Holograms and The Misfits. (The Stingers don't even have five good songs. As far as I'm concerned, the series jumped the shark with the introduction of the Stingers.) And I find myself in disagreement with the choices. Some of the songs chosen seem kind of meh, comparatively speaking. while some truly great songs are overlooked, especially where The Misfits are concerned. So, I thought I'd review each song by The Misfits.
And I've set aside the listing of each song in order of appearance in the series, together with the links, so if anyone wants to do the same, you can just copy and paste the list and post your own ranking, if you'd like.

Five Best Misfits Songs:

Number 5: Takin' It All 14
This is one of those videos that I seldom see mentioned when people compile their list of favorite Misfits song. And I don't understand why. Granted, it's The Misfits being obnoxious, but isn't that what they're supposed to do for this series?
Tune is catchy, vocals are awesome, and by the standards of this series, the lyrics are also great. The video itself doesn't quite measure up, but it certainly isn't terrible. Overall, this video captures very well The Misfits' ambitious nature.
I especially like the refrain "We're takin' it a-a-a-a-a-ll. (We're takin' it, takin' it, takin' it all.")
Ironically, this song was used in the contest with Jem and the Holograms, and lost to Jem and the Holograms', Music is Magic. Personally, I thought The Misfits had a much better performance. Perhaps it was Jem's amazing high notes for Music is Magic that scored them the win.
9/10
Number 4: Surprise! Surprise! 68
"Do you like surprises?"
Not from The Misfits, I don't. At the beginning, the lyrics seem fairly innocuous, even benign. But the music, coupled with Pizzazz's ominous delivery, communicate beautifully that any surprise offered by The Misfits will be anything but pleasant. And the video worked very well with a fantasy sequence of what else? The Misfits tormenting Jem and the Holograms with nasty surprises.
9/10
Number 3: I'm Gonna Change (Roxy) 109
While this song is credited as being performed just by Roxy, it's obvious that Ellen Bernfeld performed this and used Pizzazz's voice. And there are backing vocals, which makes this a Misfits song in all but credit.
Roxy has decided to abandon The Misfits and live for herself. And this is her personal Declaration of Independence. It is nice to see this new insight into her character and find out that she can register other emotions besides anger and extreme contempt.
The video is quite excellent, underscoring Roxy's illiteracy as letters of the alphabet, incomprehensible to Roxy, blow in the wind like leaves. The way it alternates between black and white and full-color is an interesting effect.
I was planning on excluding this one in my ranking, as it's just Roxy and not all The Misfits. But I decided this is an undervalued gem (no pun intended) and add it to the list.
9/10
Number 2: I Like Your Style 73 (The title is actually "I Like Her Style" according to the opening credit, but the refrain is "I like your style.")
Welcome to The Misfits, Jetta! And may I say your debut was awesome?I think this one is so criminally underappreciated. The tune is catchy. The lyrics on point; for once, Pizzazz isn't singing about herself or her entitlement. The animation didn't do any fantasy sequence for this song; it depicted Pizzazz being Pizzazz, but hey, that's not always a bad thing. Jetta's sax was a nice touch, a few riffs here and there and not intruding on the singing. Love Stormer's and Roxy's backing vocals, too.
Why does this never seem to make anyone's top ten list? What's not to like about it?
10/10
Number 1: Universal Appeal 18
I've seen this one in Top Misfits Songs before, and for once, I understand why.
Music, lyrics, video, all are on point. The video was especially enjoyable, particularly the eclipse at the beginning, with Jem as the sun and Pizzazz as the moon. I also enjoyed the refrain of "universal appeal" when Roxy and Stormer come in from opposite sides. For once, Roxy isn't scowling or contemptuously sneering, and actually seems to be enjoying herself. I was so surprised by this, I almost started to like Roxy. I'm not kidding. I was looking at her in this video and thinking, "Who the hell are you, and what have you done with the real Roxy?"
Even The Misfits' costumes were cool. Reminiscent of the 1930s, but with a modern twist, down to the pillbox hat worn by Pizzazz.
This may their best one. Maybe even the best number in the series.
10/10.

Five Worst Misfits Songs:

Number 5: Free And Easy 106
In a word, bland. I've heard worse, but this song is so utterly flavorless and lacking in Misfits' character that it could be just as easily be sung by Jem and the Holograms. I can't even award extra points for Jetta's sax playing.
Besides, the song suggests that The Misfits are adverse to work. And while The Misfits' have many, many faults, laziness is not one of them. They often go to great lengths to put their machinations into operation, and they didn't attain their ability by being indolent. They have been seen many times in rehearsals. Say what you will about The Misfits, but they are hard workers.
This song just isn't The Misfits.
5/10
Number 4: I'm Gonna Hunt You Down 142
Oscar Wilde described foxhunting as, “The unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable!”
Pretty insipid, flavorless stuff. The only thing that really stands out about this video is watching Jetta fall off a horse.
4/10
Number 3: Queen Of Rock And Roll 54
Another meh-fest. The most interesting thing about this video is the visuals itself. Pizzazz decked out as royalty and Jem and the Holograms bowing in homage to her. The song itself is lackluster.
4/10
Number 2: Outta My Way 1
Not just the first song by The Misfits, but the first song in the entire series. And to put it kindly, this is not an auspicious beginning. If I were watching this series from the beginning when it first came out, once I saw this video, I might have thought, "If this is what this series has to offer, I think I'll pass on the rest of it." The music's okay, but the lyrics are repetitious and not especially clever. If nothing else can be said for it, it does establish the general tone of The Misfits as a group, as their songs tend to be pushy, aggressive and very self-centered.
The video was a bit disturbing, as it depicts The Misfits torturing Jerrica. I was somewhat shocked when Pizzazz put on the boxing gloves; I expected it to depict Pizzazz beating up Jerrica in a boxing ring. Thankfully, Pizzazz only punched a target on a dunk tank that Jerrica was seated in. (You're meant to hit the target on dunk tanks with baseballs, not punch it. But since when does Pizzazz ever play fair?)
The visuals are what gives this song its low rating. Although the repetitious lyrics are hardly a saving grace. When viewed against the other Misfits songs in the series, this one comes across as a generic Misfits song, but a rather vapid one.
3/10
Number 1 (Worst of the Worst): Jack, Take A Hike 58
Full disclosure: like several songs in this series, this one was used more than once. And the first time I saw this one was in the episode, "The Jazz Player," where Pizzazz interrupts 1940's jazz trumpeter Tapps Tucker and physically forces him out of the studio. This is a new low, even by The Misfits' standards. Hence, my opinions on this might be somewhat biased by disgust, especially since the accompanying video to this song depicts a fantasy sequence in which The Misfits (mostly Pizzazz) torment the elderly musician, treatment normally reserved for Jerrica and Jem and the Holograms.
I'm especially baffled that Stormer would participate in such a thing. And what about Jetta, since she's a saxophone player and is obviously jazz influenced? You would think that at least Jetta would have some respect for a jazz legend like Tapps Tucker.
That aside, the song itself has an obnoxious, bratty-sounding "nyaah-nyaah-nyaah!" quality to it. And this seems to be a bad marriage of music and vocals. Somehow, Pizzazz sounds below the pitch when she sings it. Even being as dispassionate as I can, if I were ranking the worst of The Misfits songs, this would probably be at the very bottom.
Pizzazz, ESAD. And shame on you, Jetta. Shame on all of you. Musicians of your calibre should have more respect.

2024.05.11 00:52 CosmicKnots Trying to get better (cognition, confusion, concentration, etc.)

What the title says.
This is a first post on a new account that exclusively revolves around trying to fix what I consider my incredibly broken mental state, as an icing on the cake of the psychotherapy that I... don't have yet I think, but I'm talking to a therapist. Uh... yeah. My idea of "fixing my broken mental state" is, in addition to doing all the therapy stuff, posting on forums about it, and I guess thus getting more conscious about it? I talk a lot on the internet, I... think, so why not talk about that.
I'm feeling very tired right now, so I'm not gonna put in a ton of effort into this post, but I'm just gonna run through a couple of different points that describe my issues the best and leave asking for suggestions. I might do a follow up post, and I hope for interesting answers!
Needed context: I have PKU, also known as Phenylketonuria. To put it simply, and probably a bit reductively(?), it's a genetic metabolism disorder. Basically, I am, like, terrible in Biology, and especially especially bad in phrasing my already limited knowledge in english (I'm german), so let me phrase it like this: There's proteins. Proteins have amino acids. Body needs to do things with amino acids. Phenylanaline is an amino acid. My body can't do anything with amino acid because error. It just pumps the shit into the brain. Hilarity ensues (aka. mental disabilities, concentration problems, sensibility, etc. all that fun stuff)
https://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/phenylketonuria-overview
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/phenylketonuria/symptoms-causes/syc-20376302
You might find more if you look at those two pages under "Symptoms"
The solution: Just eating extreeeeeeeeeemely little Protein. So no burgers, no milk, no meat, no bread, no noodles. (The highest amount I could take in, in my life was 16 grams of protein per day. That was the highest!) And lots of replacement stuff and drinks. But - I take medication called Palynziq since November '21 shortly after I turned 16. A couple of months ago it actually started working very well (It usually needs a while) and I started eating everything!
Other context: I'm very obese. My BMI is 41, and I think it even used to be 42 or 43?
So yeah, I think this is enough context.
To put it vaguely, the mental problems I have can be summarized like this:
-Extreme disorganization
-Extreme concentration problems
-Extreme memory problems (I generally don't remember anything)
-Extreme intellectual disability (!!!)
-Extreme confusion
-Extreme sensitivity
-Godawful motor skills (Breaking everything that I touch, I had like 13 phones by the time I was maybe 14 or 16?)
-A weird... immaturity. This is something where I don't know if I'm able to quite describe it in concrete terms. It might fit if I'd elaborate on random examples, but I'm too tired to do that right now. Let's just say that, even if you put obvious temper tantrums aside, I tend to react to things in a manner which, by every emotionally mature person in any room, can be easily recognized as a bit... childish? I know that's very vague.
-A general feeling of over indulging on things that I like (this is being formulated very shitty. Think of proto-substance abuse without drugs)
-Lots of lying and deception from my part, when talking to other people
This should cover all of my general feelings and issues that I have, but every one of them is a little microcosm of insane mental fuckery.
To expand on some of these a bit, I do not meet a single deadline that is given to me, and surprise myself with how intensely I can procrastinate. I also have an incredibly hard time with thinking. The central theme of most conversations I have is how I expand simple 2 minute question-answer convos into 45-90 minute long torture fests where I'm cognitively stuck in a rut and can not think of a single thing to answer, no matter how irrelevant or even really easy that topic is.
What tends to happen is that my brain either just gets hung up on a word for no reason (like if you'd ask me if we should buy scissors... best convo 10/10, i'd just mentally repeat the word "scissors" a bunch of times, instead of thinking about the issue), or my brain simply - and this sounds kind of dumb - can not spawn a SINGLE association with a given word. And when asked to, say, examine the pros and cons of something, I am unable to even think of one thing, and if I happen to think of an argument that thing is some random illogical bullshit that can usually be refuted by the person thinking for, maybe, 2 seconds.
I am so INSANELY infamous for just spouting really dumb bullshit and coming off as and being utterly fucking stupid, to the point where it has been an ever-staying presence in my life for every single day I'm alive.
The procrastination issue is also a thing where, even if I get the idea to do a thing that I'm supposed to do, I'll forget it after 0.5-1 seconds because my brain is scattered as fuck. Even if I'll set myself a reminder to do it, I'll just ignore the reminder. And until I can do something about it I alrady ignored it.
It feels like to actually start doing a thing I'm supposed to do, I'm supposed to a. hold a thought, b. think the thought through and c. act based on the thought through, three INCREDIBLY hard things for me, especially c, ESPECIALLY c.
So it feels like any solution that could've been given to me is completely irrelevant because I won't follow through with it. Why? Well, the answer has been reduced to "Because I simply won't" while it actually is "Because I don't know how to make myself do a thought immediately and I forget a thought after a second", but thinking about it more and more has left me so perplexed that I reduced it to a "Because I simply won't",
I have phases of extreme confusion, where not only my entire world seems to be a giant blur (this is the case for most of the time of my day, between medium and hard, well... most of it is just unconsciousness and being switched off. 99% of my day I spent in front of my computer, doing random shit, and i enjoy that a lot; but even reducing computer time has shown to not do anything, but thats too much to get into now) but also everything is completely non-understandable, no matter how clear someone phrases anything, and no matter how easy something is. It's not that I don't understand a given sentence, it's that my brain broke and I don't understand the world. (think of alzheimer here)
I also have an extreme, EXTREEEEME habit of indulging in intense fantasies and daydreams where I pretend I do something else that I'm doing at the moment. INCREDIBLY fucking common, I would argue it accounts for 90% of my "life joy".
Ok, so this is where I'm gonna stop myself from writing, because it's already too much. Well... I could write more, but I'm gonna leave it for now.
There might be some stuff I'm missing, and I think for the most part I phrased things like shit but oh well, too bad!
I got my thoughts out pretty quickly though, so thats nice.
I will end this post on the two following things:
I have been referred to as fairly intelligent numerous times in my life, even though most of my current life involves me being not just a kinda buffoon in a colloquial way but actually, severely cognitively stunted.
What are your thoughts? Feelings? Suggestions? Does that sound like anything particular you've heard?
Might add onto stuff later. I'm happy to reply to comments! Thanks if you've read that far! :)

2024.05.10 07:18 Malibu-G I don't feel any excitement for this current anniversary, and that makes me sad.

After the leora/elaine event last anniversary, I am looking forward to the next anniversary. Last anniversary was given a lot of time a time and effort by the devs, and you can see it on the events during that anniversary.
This current anniversary feels dull. I didn't get any hype because of the previous events before this anniversary.
-Celestial Anomaly got lazy as they didn't bring back the 3 bosses before. Those relics I did grind before become just a waste of time as Rival Runes plagued the contents.
-Warm up match became unbearable with how fucking Shimmer fest the team comps of all players alongside with Reso and Divinantes (Rival Runes destroyed this content for me as well).
-They promised the new Andras-Dragon redesign but it's fucking almost half a year. And also these events are recycled a lot of times, kinda boring now to do these side events.
-They removed shimmer records in Falsetto Fantasy and moved it to the PVP side of the game which again are plagued with Shimmer Meta. Atleast in FF we can construct our own relics.
They just didn't try, and that's what bums me out. A lot of players told me they moved all their attention and resources to Afk Journey which I kinda believe now. Don't hate me, I just really like the game and play it for a long time that's why I rant my emotions here about this game. Thanks for reading my post.

2024.05.06 16:46 TigerRider [Request] MCs trade off protecting each other and caring for injuries

So I just watched the Underworld movie series for the first time recently and this request is inspired by the second movie, Underworld: Evolution, which hit some tropey buttons of mine that I'm craving now in book form. In the movie Selene and her love interest Michael are off being badasses being chased by bad guys. Throughout the movie they get into fights and the two of them trade off who is protecting who. First Selene protects Michael but she gets hurt, so then Michael has to protect her and tend to her injuries. Then the tables turn and while Michael is protecting her he gets injured and Selene has to tend to his wounds and protect him. Rinse and repeat.
I love that they're both capable and on equal footing in terms of abilities. Neither of them is a damsel or just standing around when shit goes down. There aren't any impassioned speeches about how one of them has to stay behind because it'd be too distracting for the other person or they wouldn't be safe. They work together to get the job done and keep each other safe. And equally important for me is that in the process of protecting each other they get injured in some way that leads to the uninjured character having to do field medicine to patch them up. I love how moments like that can allow for the characters to show their feelings for the injured party and maybe also needing to see parts of their body that they haven't seen before to treat the injury.
To summarize what I'm looking for:
Books that I enjoyed that I think hit on this trope (forgive me if I don't remember things quite right!):
{Paladin's Strength by T. Kingfisher} – There's a small scene in Paladin's Faith that hit my buttons (when Marguerite fell off her horse and Shane was feeling her body for injuries and using the voice. Yum!) but Paladin's Strength is my favorite of the series and I think is my prime example of what I'm looking for. I loved when Istvan unknowingly attacked Clara and she was injured. There was a scene with them in a safehouse where they were masaging each other's sore muscles. Just the whole book was spot on.
{Kate Daniels Series by Ilona Andrews} – It's been years since I finished this series so I don't have any specific examples, but I feel like the tropes I'm looking for had to have come up at some point, and I know that both Kate and Curran are capable badasses.
{Touch of Power by Maria V. Snyder} – I think this is the book I've reread the most and I love with all my heart. Avry is a magical healer so she's often healing herself and Kerrick her love interest. Kerrick doesn't do any physical injury tending since Avry has magic to do that, but early on in the book she's greviously injured and he holds her hand while she's unconcious which we later learn actually helped her heal herself, because he was unconciously transferring his forrest magic to her.
Fantasy, paranormal, and sci-fi are my favorite romance subgenres but also open to contemporary, thriller, mafia, or any other genre (not into historical though). MF is my preferred pairing but open to any and all pairing types.
Thank you for reading!
