The Ultimate Reference/Context Guide to Bye Bye Birdie (Part 1)

2024.05.02 17:25 boopboopadoopity The Ultimate Reference/Context Guide to Bye Bye Birdie (Part 1)

So I'm in Bye Bye Birdie for the first time. There are SO many references that I feel like I had to do research to figure out. I can't believe how much I miss of the references and context. The only place I found these compiled was this text-based personal website last dated 16 years ago, and even then it's only a few (though really key ones!) and some of them don't show up in my 2024 copy - I wonder if they were pared down. Regardless, figured I'd make a context and reference list based on the copy I have!
I can't fit it all in one post, I exceed the text limit, so we'll start with Act 1 with general context stuff and the second post will be Act 2 only :)

Context

How Dated Was the Musical When Released?
Bye Bye Birdie is famously a direct reference to Elvis Presley getting drafted in 1957 and the stir it caused. But note the musical was written and published in 1958, and went on Broadway in 1960. It's like if a musical went on Broadway this year (2024) about a blonde-haired pop star named Tay-lee Quick (instead of Taylor Swift) who performed a world tour, but didn't initially book any dates in Canada, causing a massive outcry, leading to several Canadian officials and the president "Justice Troodoo" to beg her to stop there and... something else silly happens involving her, then she gets punched by a jealous girlfriend, and silliness ensues.
That is how on-the-nose this musical really is. There are many references to what would have been VERY modern events in this musical. For that reason, I'll try to give some equivalences of how the references in the musical would sound if it was written today.
Elvis' Perception in America
This extensive Wikipedia article does a great job of saying in many words that Elvis was insanely influential and deeply controversial. 1956 was a major year of stardom for Elvis -
Phone Calls
Phones are obviously a huge part of this musical! Wanted to combine all the phone references here.
Kim's Phone Number: Kim's number is, according to Rosie in Act 1, Scene 1, "Capitol 7 - 8820". In the 50s, the previous system which used 6-digit phone numbers started to be replaced by one that used an "exchange prefix" and 5 digits after. (Source) (Source) At the time, phone numbers that didn't connect to anyone were given out for shows like I Love Lucy, so that may be what happened here as well, though I don't know.
One Phone Line to Share: Kim's mother asks her to get off the phone early in the play so she can take a phone call. For a long time before cell phones, each home had a "home number" and you couldn't use it at the same time. This is why Kim's mother is asking her to finish up her call so she can call someone and eventually get a phone call as well.
Picking Kim's Number: Rosie uses a rolodex she randomly flips through to pick Kim - which would have been very standard in the 1950s.
The Operator Trying to Get Through: Calls were pushed through using real people, usually women, plugging lines into a "switchboard" to connect them manually. So when Kim's mom says the operator has been trying to get through for nearly three quarters of an hour, she's been trying to not get a busy signal when manually connecting the lines for 45 minutes! That's dedication!
Mr. MacAfee Frustrated with Long Distance Calls: Cost of international calls at this time was per-minute - so calls to New York, Chicago, Fairbanks, Alaska, and Hong Kong would have cost a pretty penny - over $100 for the first 3 minutes in a similar estimation! It sounds like Conrad and Albert didn't really offer to cover this cost, so you can see why Mr. MacAfee is so cross.
Getting Pinned/Going Steady
"Going steady" referred to, in short, being exclusive with someone. "As Time reported in 1957, "Boys and girls who go steady dance together exclusively (cutting in is frowned upon), sip their sodas, absorb their double features and spin their platters in each other's company or not at all. Steady-going girls indicate their unavailability in various ways, [like] the old-fashioned fraternity pins." (Source) It's mentioned in other sources that this could also be school pins, or rings. Something to show your commitment. One of the heads of my production described it like a "promise ring". It's definitely a firmer promise and commitment then just going out with someone, but not quite an engagement.
However, why, if this is such a sweet gesture of romantic love and commitment, would everyone be freaking out about it, and Kim's parents potentially not reacting well to "getting pinned" or "going steady"? (Kim has a line where she exclaims to her mother that she thinks her dad took the announcement "awfully well"). Truth be told, going steady in high school was actually highly discouraged by adults and especially church at the time. This article/Reddit thread sheds some light. I'll copy the first comment here by u/Gfrisse1. "It was felt that going steady would encourage the relationship to develop into one of physical intimacy, something parents wished to avoid. On the other hand, dating a wider, more diverse number of individuals would give them the experience of being exposed to a greater number of character and personality types, thereby helping to hone their mate-selection skills for later on. In the meantime, the short-term relationships were not expected to get much beyond the first- or second-date stage of intimacy. (One-night-stands, or casual hook-ups were not as common-place as they are today.)"
Cigarettes/Age
There are many references to smoking, cigarettes, and how old you should be in this play. It's complicated, but just know that in the 1950s, EVERYONE smoked. Everywhere. In the early 1950s, though, the first studies were coming out with the link to lung cancer, and tobacco companies used every trick in the book to try to squash that. It's genuinely fascinating (and terrifying) how much money and strategy was poured into this misinformation campaign. Read about it here. Anyway, what this means is in the late 1950s, it's not like most were giving up smoking, but because tobacco companies had started more explicitly advertising to minors, several states were in debate about the smoking age. It varied from 21 to 16, but just know that Kim was not considered old enough to be doing it. (Source.)) However, MANY minors did. Think of it like underaged drinking today as the best analogy. There's some specific cigarette references that will pop up in specific scenes, but just know that's the standard.
Patriotism
Fresh(ish) off of the victory of World War II, which was filled with MASSIVE pushes for increased American patriotism (to the degree that Disney even got in on it!), love for the USA was very culturally acceptable and a way to show you were a good person! It was easy to rally around (especially if you ignored the growing civil rights movement of Black people trying to achieve equality, which many white people at the time were very happy to do until they could no longer ignore it - obviously, not touched on in this musical, but significant. Several racist references have been either removed or are requested to be removed by current versions.) But that's why we hear so many classic American anthems in this play!

References by Order of Appearance (Act 1)

Almaelou Music Corporation
This is the end of Almaelou Music Corporation!
Almaelou may very well be a parody of Aldon Music, which would fit due to its major success being in the late 50s, and it's influence in music written for teen girls at the time.
Arpege
Rosie: A five-dollar raise in 1954 and a bottle of Arpege last Christmas.
Arpege is a perfume that was released in 1927 and remained the best-selling perfume of well-loved fashion line Levine for decades. (Source) Albert is quoting a commercial tagline tied to the perfume that was very well-known at the time. It continued to be used in commercials for many years. (Commercial example). It was possible to see 1/2 oz bottles at the time (Source), but Albert gave her a laughably small amount at 1/16 of an ounce. You can still buy this perfume today!
A five-dollar raise in 1954. Secretaries in metropolitan areas could earn around $75 a week. (Source) A five-dollar raise bringing that to $80 a week would, ironically, be about a 1/16 increase in earnings. Also, Rosie is pointing out in an earlier line she has put in 90 hour weeks and hasn't gotten a raise in four years.
Modern example:
Rosie: My last raise was four years ago and you got me that jewelry from Kay Jewelers once
Albert: "Every Kiss Begins with Kay", Rosie. Rosie: Not when that "Kay" is a .25 karat discontinued friendship ring!
Music Business Bum Vs. English Teacher
This is related to the prestige of being an English teacher who is helping people learn a scholarly subject vs. the "seedy" music industry.
Ugga Bugga Boo
"When you wrote Conrad's last hit 'Ugga Bugga Boo' then I knew this was it/You were thru with English forever."
Ugga Bugga Boo is a real song released 1947. It's a comedy song, written by voice acting legend and radio host Mel Blanc (voice of Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, and many others) for his comedy radio show. I do wonder if Elvis had a song in this vein, as the Jetsons did a similar parody with an Elvis expy a few years later, but I couldn't find one.
Geoffrey ChauceWilliam Morris
"It was goodbye, Geoffrey ChauceHello, William Morris"
Geoffrey Chaucer is considered one of the greatest English writers, specifically poets, of all time. Born in the 1400s.
As for William Morris, this could be two references, possibly combining.
William Morris Agency was an incredibly famous music talent agency that would have likely been known by some audience members in the 1950s. They've represented tons of major talent. This is what I believe is the most likely reference given the song context.
However William Morris was a man also considered a legendary poet during his life, born in the 1830s. However, he also made wallpapers and textiles. After his passing, he became infinitely more famous in the public eye for his wallpaper designs than he did for his poetry. This is could be a dig at that Alfred could be great in the English world, but like Morris, his legacy will be for something "silly" instead. (Important to note that his works, both art and poetry, had great impact - and this may just be a coincidence reference, I don't know)
Bliss! Kiss! That rhymes! I wonder if anyone's ever used it before?
Many people had and have, this is a joke of him being unaware of current trends. Dean Martin had a #1 song in 1955 with this very rhyme for instance that audiences may have remembered at the time.
Dentifrice
Albert: Oh one last kiss; it gives so much bliss... what is your dentifrice! No, that's too clinical...
Basically, toothpaste. Which is, kind of, related to kissing? It could actually be a paste or powder for cleaning the teeth, though in the 50s it wouldn't have been the default way to refer to what you used it seems from my research, like in this commercial. May be a way to show off that Albert really does have an excellent English teacher level vocabulary!
A modern example may be "do you use fluoride? No, that's too clinical..."
"What's the story? Morning glory?"
This is most likely a reference to the song "What's Your Story, Morning Glory?" by jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald released in 1958, another topical reference. It's very possible Helen, the teen who says this line, would be aware of the song because Ella Fitzgerald in 1956 had released her "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Song Book" album, her attempt to pull in a non-jazz audience. (Source on Ella's Discography)
"What's the tale, nightingale" is most likely an original line to match the "Morning glory" one, same with the hummingbird line.
"Go to a fancy night club and stay out after ten!"
A nightclub was different from what we think of today. Think tables and chairs, late night musical performances (not the NSFW kind), and in some of the most famous like the Copacabana night club, rubbing elbows with the rich and famous. And drinking, of course! Source on Nightclub Definition
18 in World War II
Mr. MacAfee: I am not an old man! I was 18 in World War II.
This is one that may get a bit better with time. WWII ended in 1945, but the play is in 1958 at the earliest. It's better to demonstrate with a modern example written for 2024. "I am not an old man! I was 18 when Facebook first launched." Not quite the same impact as WWII, but the timeline is similar. Essentially this is not a flex and just shows he definitely is old to a teenager.
No Smoking 'Till You're 14
Albert: Remember the Conrad Birdie Creed dear. No smoking till you're fourteen.
As mentioned in my blurb above, 14 was too young to smoke. A modern version may say "No drinking 'till you're 16" or something. Similar to the line "and stay out of the bar!" later on.
"Go down to Track 12"
Albert: Why don't you girls go down to Track 12 and I'll talk to her.
This is one of the many train tracks that must have run through this station. This station is located in New York, so it would make sense for there to be at least 12.
Wear your rubbers
"Keep your money in your inside pocket. Wear your rubbers. And eat a hot lunch..."
While "rubber" as slang for a condom definitely did exist in the 1950s, I believe it's far more likely Mae is referring to overshoes due to the context, though to be fair, I can't find a source to this being "official slang" besides casual mention in posts like these. Something tells me Mae is not randomly mentioning condoms lol.
A Plain G.I.
Albert: Proud to be a plain G.I.!
Mentioning this because it's faded away from current use and surged in usage most recently at WWII, this is just referring to being a soldier. (Source) Hence, G.I. Joe, if you're old enough to remember that.
Appealing for the Draft
Albert: And that's why he volunteered for...
Men were drafted to join the US armed forces until 1973. (Source)
Jerries
Albert: "Say Mr. Peterson," he cried eagerly, "Do you suppose I can get assigned to the front-line trenches? That way I'll be sure to get one of those dirty jerries..."
"Jerries" is slang for German soldiers and was most popular during WWII. The joke here is that WWII is over at this point - the enemies Conrad would be facing at this time would be the Vietnamese, not the Germans. When Rosie tries to correct him, he just says "whoever's dirty this time!".
2024 equivalent: "Conrad said 'Is there any way I could be placed on Seal Team 6? That way I'll be sure to get that Osama Bin Laden for sure!'" "Albert!" "...Or whoever the terrorist is this time!"
Rosie + Albert's "Origin Stories" for Conrad
Just a few references from Rosie's and Albert's stories in "Healthy Normal American Boy" that may be interesting.
Old Virginie - This may be known as a historical fact for people in Virginia, but Carry Me Back to Old Virginny was popular enough in the state of Virginia that it was the state song starting in 1940. In 1940, the version that became the state song had "Virginia" instead of "Virginny", but people watching the musical would definitely be familiar with the original version as this play was only 20 years later.
Indo-China - An eastern territory that got independence from France claim in 1954, and comprised Cambodia, Laos, and parts of Vietnam. Audiences would have been very aware of what Indochina was - according to Wikipedia, "The events of [Indochina getting independence in 1954 through the Geneva Convention and the political tensions of that between S/N Vietnam and other countries] marked the beginnings of serious United States involvement in Vietnam and the ensuing Vietnam War." (Source) Remember, that's the current war during the events of the play!
Dirty Hong Kong moon - We had a complicated relationship with Hong Kong in the 1950s-60s. Read more here. Though I'm not sure if this is meant to be a mis-insult like when Albert said "dirty Jerries".
A wire to New York
Another Reporter: I'll make sure we've got a wire to New York.
This is almost certainly setting up a telegraph communication to New York, which was still happening (though declining in popularity) by 1960. (Source)
I mean I really feel that girl
Conrad: When I sing about a tree/I really feel that tree!/When I sing about a girl,/I really feel that girl,/I mean I really feel sincere!
This isn't necessarily specific to the 50s or 60s but I think this joke gets missed because it seems so tame today. A huge part of Elvis' appeal was his explicit sex appeal at the time (in the form of - gasp! - hip thrusts!) so he's slipping in accidentally a reference to "feeling up" a girl%20for%20sexual%20pleasure) here. Yeah, that slang started in the 1930s!
Mr. MacAfee's Speech
Just know that this is a lot of great historical references, nothing specific to 1950 - 60.
Ed Sullivan
Ed Sullivan was the nationwide sensation that lead The Ed Sullivan Show, a TV program considered one of the most iconic of all time in US television history. You have to understand just how influential and huge the Ed Sullivan Show was at this time. It's genuinely difficult to think of an equivalent in 2024 - today, people get entertainment from tons of sources on the internet, TV, etc. but in 1960 there were THREE television channels. That was it. THREE. To be fair, there were many, many more radio stations that could deliver information and entertainment, but by 1960 it was a TV nation - as the Library of Congress says, "In 1950 only 9 percent of American households had a television set, but by 1960 the figure had reached 90 percent." The Ed Sullivan Show was well watched and well loved by all of the United States. (And Albert saying that they would appear on Sunday at 8:05 was right, as that's when it aired in real life!)
One reason Ed Sullivan is specifically picked is the absolute bombshell of a privilege to be a normal family on this show beamed in practically every household in the United States. But another is Elvis' relationship with the show. When Elvis finally appeared on the show in 1956, it set a record of the most-viewed TV program ever in the US. In fact, it still holds the record TODAY of having the highest share of TV viewers in all of television history in the US. No other TV program has ever had a higher percentage of people tune in vs. other stations. (I mean, that's helped by the fact that there were only 3 choices, but still!) So yeah - this was a cultural phenomenon that was easy to reference in this show!
Margo out of Shangri-La
Mrs. Peterson: She looks like Margo when they took her out of Shangri-La.
Going to take this one right from that personal website I referenced above!
In the 1937 [movie] "Lost Horizon)" [...] a group of travelers are stuck in a utopia called Shangri-La, somewhere in the Himalayas. One of the residents of Shangri-La is Maria, played by Margo), a Mexican dancer and actress. When the travelers finally escape, Maria insists on going with them. But outside the realm of Shangri-La, her youthful beauty can no longer be maintained and she reverts to her true age, causing her to die and her appearance to transform to the hideously withered, wrinkled features of someone who has lived way beyond a normal life span.
You can watch the movie free with ads here, if you're curious! Also, according to the synopsis, Maria never actually escapes Shangri-La. She just dies and "reverts to her true age". AKA looks very very very decrepit. I'm guessing this is more of an easy thing to misremember and better shorthand, though. See the face at 2 hr 3 minutes in abouts!
Suwannee River
Gloria: Mae, can you hum Suwannee River?
While this is a nice convenient copyright-free tune, it would definitely have been publicly known at the time. It had been sung at least partially by Bing Crosby, on the Honeymooners, etc. in recent years before the musical premiered. Unsure if this is what they were going for, but the original lyrics are racist - no wonder it was Mae's "favorite selection".
Ruby Keeler
(Stage direction) Gloria tap dances as Mrs. Peterson hums gaily. Sort of Ruby Keeler-ish steps with a lot of feet-slapping.
Ruby was a well known actress and dancer in the 1920s-30s (and then later after a break). Here's some footage of her dancing! Interestingly, in her early career she was cast in a musical called Bye, Bye, Bonnie. In a newspaper article review, it seems the plot wasn't very similar to Bye Bye Birdie, though it did involve someone going to jail. (Source)
The Touch System
Mrs. Peterson: I'll find you a typewriter (Exits) Albert: [TO GLORIA] Do you use the touch system? Gloria: Whenever possible.
Albert is just referring to the touch system of typing - basically, not looking at the keyboard while you type. Still relevant today, though not with typewriters, which were standard until the 1980s, so that fits here. Of course, Gloria is of course referring to, uh, something a bit more sensual. (Read: She wants to touch him and not like a friend.)
Kodak Ad
Sullivan: So remember: your surest way to the best in color slides is to insist on the new Kodak! And now, the young man you've all been waiting to see.
Just like media today, the Ed Sullivan Show certainly included ads. This included ad deals where Ed himself would promote a product, kind of like YouTubers do with "This video is sponsored by...". And, as you can guess, one of those products was Kodak cameras and camera related products. Kodak was still a huge brand at the time (there were not cell phone cameras as competition, so it was way more likely your home owned a camera or two), Kodak absolutely was sponsoring the Ed Sullivan show and had been for a few years (Source). Here's an example from the time period. What you may miss about this ad in the musical is that it's not actually advertising a camera! Cameras at the time required physical film be loaded into them, and wouldn't you know it, Kodak released a new high-speed color film in 1959! (I think this may be a coincidence, as Kodak had been selling color film for quite a bit before this) Yet another reference that's right on the nose of the current times (of the time)!
Wear it in good health
Albert: Who let that kid in here? Rosie: I did Albert. Albert: Rosie! Rosie: It's a sort of farewell present to you and Miss Rasputin. Wear it in good health.
Not invented in the 50s by any means, but this phrase really isn't used as much today I think. There's not really a deeper meaning here besides sarcasm that I can find - it's just wishing someone well. Obviously, the sarcasm is dripping here lol.
Dinah Shore
STAGE DIRECTION: ...as Mr. MacAfee throws a tremendous Dinah Shore kiss to the audience.
Dinah Shore was an actress and entertainer that had been popular for years at that point. Super interesting career if you want to give it a read. This is referencing her famous "Dinah Shore kiss" that she would give at the end of her show broadcasts and was a huge part of her brand. Here's an example!
Stay tuned for Part 2! :)

Golden Rapture Mining Corporation (CSE: GLDR) is a newly listed gold exploration company focused on redefining a historical, significant and high-grade gold deposit.
Golden Rapture’s listing comes when Canada’s initial public offerings (IPOs) are experiencing a financial regarding what’s to be expected, as investors flocked to futuristic A.I. tech stocks.
Only 51 Canadian IPOs were completed in 2023 (15 were mining companies), raising a meagre total of $202 million, a decrease of 88% compared to 2022 and 98% compared to 2021. This $202 million is $597 million below the previous low of $799 million, recorded in 2016.
With Nvidia’s market cap worth more than Canada’s entire economy, we’re bound to see a reversal away from overpriced tech stocks. Commercial and retail investors are already rushing back to good ol’ gold to hedge their bets.
Gold is the ultimate hedge in an uncertain economy. Gold always stays in fashion for investors.
The Making of Ontario’s Newest High-Grade Gold Camp
The Rainy River gold mining district of northwestern Ontario, where Golden Rapture operates, is renowned for its rich history. Its first gold discovery dates back to 1885 during the short-lived “Lake of Woods Gold Rush.” Bonanza gold grades and visible gold were common on this exciting property. The gold rush was short-lived when most prospectors stampeded on to the bigger gold rush at Klondike in 1897.
The area represents a treasure trove of forgotten opportunities that are being brought back to life using modern and efficient techniques. Unlike many exploration companies, the company said it is not looking for typical geophysical anomalies but also for multiple large, high-grade gold structures identified on the surface that can be drilled immediately. The firm owns an astonishing eighteen (18) mine shafts on its spacious 10,000-acre property in the historic Rainy River, with eight (8) gold zones, giving it more chances of success.
Bonanza Gold Results
The Rainy River property has been a hidden gem for many years. The short-lived “Lake of the Woods Gold Rush” in the late 1800s revealed bonanza gold grades visible on the surface. Historical gold results were as high as 740 grams per tonne.
It is being adequately explored using modern exploration methods, including drone technology and 3D geologic models. Recent sampling results by Golden Rapture were as high as 204 grams per tonne. And judging by the picture below, they’re just scratching the proverbial surface.

Prospective Geology in a Historic Gold Camp
The Golden Rapture property shares many geological similarities with the nearby Rainy River producing mine, which offers potential for both Open-Pit and Underground mines. Evidence of previous production is abundant at the property.
Rainy River’s flagship property is the Phillips Township Gold Property, located near intermediate gold producer New Gold Inc.’s (TSX-NGD) Rainy River Gold Mine, which has a reserve of over 8 million ounces. New Gold acquired the property in 2013.
Golden Rapture could one day also be bought out by a prominent player in gold exploration and production.
https://preview.redd.it/gowyqvww0uxc1.png?width=662&format=png&auto=webp&s=a48921fa0625b3c86f4f03b8f37b743a4bbc7b8f
Exploration of the property first occurred during the Lake of Woods Gold Rush. The Philips Township Gold Rush started in 1885, and many properties went into production.
The Dryden district produced over 300,000 ounces of gold, mined intermittently from the early 1900s to the 1990s. However, past work needed to be more piecemeal and limited in scope. Dryden Gold Corp. (TSX.V-DRY) has consolidated the district for the first time, giving it a unique opportunity to apply a holistic, camp-scale approach to exploration.
Excellent Infrastructure = Low-Cost Exploration
One of the Golden Rapture’s key advantages is exceptional Infrastructure, which translates into low-cost, year-round exploration. Golden Rapture’s land package straddles the Trans-Canada Highway, with an extensive network of logging roads and trails providing drive-in drill access.
The town of Kenora Dryden, with a population of over 15,000, offers a skilled labour pool and an array of mining and exploration services. This allows Golden Rapture to leverage local talent without the added costs of maintaining a remote camp.
Ultimately, companies that can advance projects from discovery through to resource development are best positioned to create outsized shareholder value. Dryden Gold CEO Maura Kolb summarizes this opportunity:
“We’ve strategically picked up ground along what we call the Manitou-Dinorwic deformation zone,” commented Maura Kolb. “It goes from the northeast part of the property down to the southwest. We believe it’s the most important structure for gold — big and long-lived.”
She adds that they’ve seen high-grade plunging ore shoots, a common theme among major gold camps like Rainy River. “When these intersections happen, you get high-grade shoots,” explained Kolb. “It’s pretty typical. In these systems, you see this happening quite a bit.”
Highly Experienced Team
When investing in new explorers, keep a close eye on their team, especially their leaders. Richard Rivet, Golden Rapture’s CEO and President, is an accomplished company builder and Entrepreneur with more than 25 years of experience as a senior executive officer, founder, and director of private and publicly listed companies.
Rivet founded and served as President of King’s Bay Gold Corporation (TSX.V-KBG) from 1998 to 2009 and also founded and served as President of Mainstream Minerals Corp (TSX.V-MJO) from 2006 to 2010.
Behind Rivet is a team of serial entrepreneurs, such as Michael Birch, former Manitoba’s 2001 Aboriginal Entrepreneur of the Year. Birch serves as the company Director. He has consistently pioneered business ventures with First Nations. He serves as President of Direction North Transport, a company specializing in remote winter road transportation.
Alongside Mr. Charbonneau as a director is another entrepreneur with private and public company experience. He has over 30 years of experience running numerous businesses in Montreal. His public company experience includes being a Director of King’s Bay Gold Corporation (TSX.V- KBG) from 1999 to 2003 (now Lion Rock Resources TSX.V -ROAR).
Within our current information age, a company publicist is vital to garnering attention from both retail and commercial investors. That’s where CFO Ryan Yanch steps in. Yanch boasts over 11 years of experience in public markets. He co-founded marketing agencies and leads Guerilla Capital, consulting for over 50 public companies, hosting mining conferences and advising firms on compliance through Complychain Solutions.
Golden Rapture also boasts several prominent Advisors with decades of experience in finance, mining, geology and compliance. One notable Advisor is James Tworek, the CEO of Element79 Gold Corp (CSE: ELEM, FSE: 7YS), a Canadian precious metals exploration company.
Native Leadership & Community Relations
Golden Rapture boasts strong ties to the Aboriginal community. Director Mike Birch is an Oji-Cree award-winning Entrepreneur who recently ran as a Progressive Conservative Candidate for the Keewatinook Riding. Birch was nominated as Aboriginal Entrepreneur of the Year and owns multiple Native-owned businesses that provide employment opportunities in remote Manitoba Communities.
In addition, Jason Wilson sits on the advisory board of Golden Rapture and has a strong track record of brokering deals with First Nations and the Canadian Government. Northwestern Ontario remains extremely mining-friendly, ranking 12th overall as the most attractive jurisdiction worldwide for Mining Investment. The local community is heavily in favour of mining, given the Employment opportunities.
The nearby Rainy River mine has been a saviour for surrounding towns like Fort Frances & Kenora, where many former workers from the shuttered Resolute Forest Products mill found employment.
Well-funded to Cover Expenses
As of January 31, Golden Rapture had about $636,000 in cash. It also has $5 million in institutional financing from Crescita Capital LLC (agreed upon on March 11 of last year), through which Golden Rapture may draw capital from time to time over three years. Golden Rapture has yet to raise any capital from this equity investment facility, more than a year after their agreement.
Buy Low on Gold Explorers
The gold exploration and development companies market looks favourable due to an intersection of macroeconomic components. Historically significant levels of worldwide debt, loose money supply policies, and other geopolitical vulnerabilities have expanded gold’s appeal as a safe-haven asset and a common hedge for inflation, often driving investors towards the gold sector.
For exploration companies, this translates into a strong demand for new, high-quality ventures in steady mining jurisdictions. There’s a specific centre on projects with district-scale potential that can bolster long-life mining operations. Companies that provide consistent news updates and growth development through drilling success are pulling in premium valuations.
The current environment, moreover, favours solidification, with well-funded companies procuring earlier-stage ventures to construct development pipelines. Larger miners progressively seek exploration companies to renew depleted reserves, often through joint venture agreements or strategic investments.
The Investment Thesis for Golden Rapture Mining
· Newly listed mining explorer holding a premier land position in an underexplored historic high-grade gold camp with multi-million-ounce potential.
· Early drilling successfully confirmed a robust geological model and identified multiple high-grade structures
· An aggressive exploration program is underway to expand known zones and test new targets.
· Strong management and technical team with a proven track record of discovery and value creation
· Well-funded for ongoing drilling and exploration with a tight share structure and attractive valuation
· Drilling costs: Among the Cheapest in Canada, management can drill at $140 per meter.

He previously was the National Director of the Aboriginal Peoples Commission (APC) for the Jean Chretien government and is currently an advisor to the B.C. government on Indian and Northern Affairs and a Director for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC).

He previously was the National Director of the Aboriginal Peoples Commission (APC) for the Jean Chretien government and is currently an advisor to the B.C. government on Indian and Northern Affairs and a Director for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC).

2024.04.30 16:52 HOBTT27 Culture Takes Time To Solidify; We Can Really Only Identify it in the Rear View

I see a lot of posts on here that say something to the effect of "why don't the 2020's have a discernible culture??" or "the 2020's basically feel like an extension of the 2010's."
I don't know the age of the folks posting these kinds of things, but I'd hazard a guess they're quite young and haven't experienced much visible culture shift in their time as teens & young adults. But the reality is that we don't really notice big cultural shifts in the moment; there aren't actually firm demarcations between when one era ends & another begins. Down the road, after some time has passed, we're able to look back & see just how much things were changing right before our eyes, we just couldn't see it because it moved so slowly.
It's like trying to watch a flower bloom: if you sit there & stare at if for a while, you'll think, "this sucks; it's not moving," but if you go away & come back to it later, you'll say, "wow, it bloomed; it looks completely different."
In the mid-2010's, I asked a friend about the cultural differences between the 2000's & the 2010's and they sort of shrugged & said, "I don't know; I don't really think there's a difference. Everything in this decade feels like an extension of the 2000's." But nowadays, after the 2010's have ended & time has passed, I'd imagine that same friend would easily be able to identify a myriad of ways the culture had changed between those two decades.
It's too hard to discern "moments" of culture shift when they happen, because that's just not really how culture works. We don't all wake up one day & decide that a particular fashion or music style is passé; we drop them & adopt new ones slowly, over time. People try to pinpoint these moments in hindsight, but even so, they're still not totally accurate. Many people will claim that the "Grunge Era" died with Kurt Cobain in April 1994, but in reality that isn't the case; people continued wearing ripped jeans & flannel and listened to Pearl Jam & Nirvana after he was buried. Yes, it was probably a turning point, but in the moment, I doubt anyone declared grunge culture & fashion dead the minute Kurt passed; it happened over time.
This has all been a longwinded way of saying: please stop trying to identify culture shifts in the moment; it cannot accurately be done. Yes, it's fun to make predictions & track what things are changing in real-time, but complaints that "the 2020's have no culture" are completely baseless & invalid. Yes, culture is more splintered, so there is less of a defining monoculture that we all participate in, but there is still culture happening all around us & it's always changing. Of course today feels pretty similar to the late 2010's... the late 2010's weren't that long ago! But does today feel similar to the early 2010's? No. Not at all. Because enough time has passed that we're now able to look back & see just how much has changed from then to now.
The 2020's absolutely has idiosyncratic cultural features. You just can't see them because you're living through them. You're only going to realize what it looked like once the culture has moved on to the point that today's culture becomes unrecognizable to life at some point in the future.

VANCOUVER, BC / ACCESSWIRE / April 30, 2024 / Alta Copper Corp. (TSX:ATCU)(OTCQX:ATCUF)(BVL:ATCU) ("Alta Copper" or the "Company") is very pleased to provide an update on significant developments and progress to date on several fronts at its 100% owned Cañariaco advanced staged copper project.
Highlights:
  • New Geological Model ("2024 Model") Identifies Several High Priority Drill Targets: a new geological model for the Cañariaco project has been completed with the re-interpretation of zonation of grades within the Cañariaco Norte deposit while identifying several high priority drill targets (See Figure 3 & Figure 4);
  • Conducted a generative study to define and prioritize a portfolio of targets for future testing in underexplored areas of the Cañariaco Sur and Quebrada Verde Targets (See Figure 1);
  • Planned increased drill hole coverage in areas with less drill data to obtain a better understanding of the geometry and continuity of mineralized zones, breccias and the various porphyry intrusions within both the Cañariaco Norte and Cañariaco Sur deposits (See Figure 2);
  • Drilling will focus on the under explored Cañariaco Sur porphyry copper gold deposit, the undrilled Quebrada Verde porphyry target and enhancement of the Cañariaco Norte deposit with both infill drilling and testing of several recently identified high grade zones open to depth;
  • A 40 Platform drill permit application ("DIA") based on on Environmental and Social Impact Assessment studies completed by Yaku Consultores was submitted in December 2023 to Ministerio de Energia Minas ("MINEM"). Up to 47,000 metres of drilling will be staged in phases of 10,000 to 20,000 metre drilling each targeted to commence by Q4-2024 or earlier;
  • A meeting was recently held regarding initial comments received from Dirección General de Asuntos Ambientales Mineros de Perú ("DGAAM"), Servicio Nacional Forestal y de Fauna Silvestre ("SERFOR") and Autoridad Nacional del Agua ("ANA") on the DIA application. The Company readily addressed all comments with approval of drill permits now expected by Q3-2024 or earlier;
  • Optimized Preliminary Economic Assessment ("Optimized PEA") with publication of results now targeted on or before May 15, 2024; and
  • Alta Copper continues to advance its long-term involvement with the community in a fashion that endeavors to benefit all stakeholders. The primary objective it is to improve sustainable development in the community which will allow for better quality of life for all community members with or without a mining project through the implementation of Economic and Social Development Support Programs and Corporate Strategic Partners. The provision of S/250,000 soles of a total of S/750,000 soles of a previous commitment has been further ratified for the development of sustainable projects in the area.
Giulio T. Bonifacio, Executive Chair, commented "We are very pleased with progress achieved to date on several fronts inclusive of our Optimized PEA and while this has taken longer than initially anticipated the results and the additional time taken will be more than justified. During the field visit in February, engineers from AGP and Ausenco identified excellent opportunities to improve the project with changes to the infrastructure layout for the site. Following this, Whittle also identified several opportunities for optimizing the mine plan. These various improvements have required additional time to incorporate into the Optimized PEA however they will prove to be of great value while further guiding the future development of the Cañariaco project which is one of the largest copper deposits in the Americas not currently held by a major. We have benefited from the wealth of previous studies and engineering work completed to date which will result in a study that is more advanced on several levels than one typically sees in many other PEA level studies."
Joanne C, Freeze, President & Chief Executive Officer, commented "We are very pleased with the results from our 3D Geological Modelling inclusive of an extensive and thorough review of our deposits which has identified several high-grade zones which are open to depth and laterally at Cañariaco Norte. We have also gained a better understanding of Cañariaco Sur and Quebrada Verde while identifying several high priority drill targets. All of this has clearly demonstrated further expansion potential in the two known deposits as well as the Quebrada Verde porphyry target. We are equally pleased with the recent gains with the Community which we will continue to advance as we further engage by way of our community offices and field activities in preparation of the upcoming staged 10,000 to 20,000 metre drilling program."
Optimized Preliminary Economic Assessment
Whittle Consulting Pty Ltd ("Whittle") and Ausenco Engineering Canada Inc. ("Ausenco") and AGP Mining Consultants Inc. were engaged in 2023 for purposes of advancing project optimization which involves a rigorous analytical and computational process using Whittle's Strategic Mine Planning software and Integrated Strategic Planning concepts. To date, hundreds of iterations of pit shells have been conducted to establish the most advantageous mine plan. In addition, statistical studies that identified several compelling alteration effects on the deposit, were incorporated into our 3D Geological Modelling and have been linked to zones with higher copper grades all of which will be incorporated in our Optimized PEA.
Based on what are considered very positive developments with our 3D Geological Modelling, more fully described below, positive metallurgical testwork on Cañariaco Sur and Whittle optimization, the Company is now targeting to publish the optimized 2024 PEA on or before May 15, 2024. The Optimized PEA has benefited from previously conducted engineering studies over many years, especially 2010 through 2014 and 2021 to 2022, which will prove to show many aspects developed beyond a typical PEA level.
2024 Geological Modelling
A new geological model for the Project has been completed with the re-interpretation of district-scale and project-specific geology including statistical analyses on alteration effects to various lithologies. This new geological model, has identified significant mineralization potential and numerous high priority drill targets which will provide the foundation for the planned staged 10,000 to 20,000 metre drilling program targeted to commence by Q4-2024.
The 2024 geological modelling has identified several high-grade copper zones with previously untested potential depth extensions. These zones as well as internal zones, where infill drilling could expand some high-grade zones, will be drill tested with the goal of further enhancing the current substantial mineral resource already defined at Cañariaco.
Methodology
The 2024 geological model for alteration and lithologies relies on detailed logging of 85,000 metres drilled between 2006 and 2013, largely in Cañariaco Norte. Information which was captured in historic logs has been recently reviewed. Multi-element geochemical data available for most of the holes was used to establish lithological and alteration zonation modelling. The data collected has not previously been incorporated into a formal three-dimensional geological model.
Interpretation of geology was hand drawn on cross sections, where appropriate, and together with the other technical datasets, was integrated into Leapfrog software to generate the new three-dimensional model.
Next Steps
Our current geological model and observations from historical drilling will provide the framework for our upcoming diamond drilling program. (See Figures 1 to 9 following). In addition, a generative study is underway to provide a portfolio of targets for future testing, in a district that remains underexplored.
Community Relations and Field Activities
Alta Copper continues to advance its long-term involvement with the community in a fashion that will benefit all stakeholders. The goal is to improve sustainable development in the community which allows better quality of life for the community members with or without a mining project nearby through the implementation of Economic and Social Development Support Programs and Corporate Strategic Partners.
Our community relations team together with community members recently reviewed 40 agricultural products potentially suitable for production in the area and chose 5 products (coffee, dried mushrooms, gooseberries, green peas and trout). These products were chosen as they will allow coverage of all 3 altitude zones in the project's area of influence while identifying potential for major positive community impacts that can result from:
  1. technical assistance to improve product quality;
  2. expansion of current production given the existence of large market potential; and
  3. better income for the producers and clear interest from local producers.
We have introduced Corporate Strategic Partners in coffee and mushrooms, whom are major Peruvian exporters, and have identified groups that could be suitable for the gooseberries, green peas and trout.
Alta Copper has also recently provided the first third of the S/750,000 soles committed (US$ 210,000) for the development of sustainable projects in the area. These projects are to be chosen by a committee made up of community members, Cañariaco Copper team and the Lambayeque Chamber of Commerce.
Alta Copper currently has field personnel working with locals and consultants preparing for the upcoming drill program. The team has been conducting maintenance work on local roads, the field camp as well as conducting other various environmental tasks required for the drilling. In addition to the technical aspects, this work allows us increased community engagement.
As of February 2023, the Company has four community offices which, allow the Cañariaco Copper team many more opportunities to engage with the local community. The dialogues and exchanges of information with the local community are much more frequent and continuous now.
Qualified Person
The scientific and technical information contained in this news release has been reviewed and approved by Alta Copper's, President, CEO and Director, Joanne Freeze, P.Geo., who is the Qualified Person as defined by National Instrument 43-101 - Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects ("NI 43-101").
About Alta Copper

2024.04.29 08:36 SorryToPopYourBubble The Phoenix Suns: A Legeacy of Failure (2023-24 Update)

1968-69: You enter the league alongside the Milwaukee Bucks and proceed to go 16-66. One of the worst records in NBA history. On the bright side, you might be the #1 pick.
1969-70: You lose the #1 pick to a tiebreaker coin toss to the Bucks. That #1 pick becomes the 2nd-greatest scorer in NBA history. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. You get a consolation prize though. Getting beaten in 7 games by the Lakers.
1970-71: Settle into mediocrity to change the decade. Enjoy this middling futility for the next 5 years
1975-76: Holy shit you did it. Inside a decade of your young existence, you make the NBA Finals.....In which you get smoked in 6 by the Celtics juggernaut. Next year is your time though
1976-77: Your time to go 34-48 and miss the playoffs.
1977-78: Rebound into a first series 2-0 best of 3 loss to those fucking Bucks
1978-79: The best season in franchise history at this point. 50-32 and you breeze past the Kansas City Kings in the semifinals. All that stands in your way is the Seattle SuperSonics......Who go on to rip your heart out in Game 7 and then smoke Washington in 5 in the Finals.
1979-80: You are even BETTER this year! 55-27! and holy shit the Lakers clap your cheeks in 5. Remember that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar guy you got screwed out of? Yeah, the Bucks traded him to the Lakers back in 1975 thus making it your problem.
1980-81: For the first time in your history you win your division and take the 1 seed. 57-25! Nothing can stop you.
1980-81 Semi-Finals: You lost. In 7 games. To the Mickey Mouse organization known as the Kings
1981-82: You are in decline now and get swept by the Lakers in the Semis. Bet you wish you'd won that coin toss right about now.
1982-83: This is probably your last real chance at a championship for a while. 53-29 and just have to beat the Nuggets for a date with the Spurs. In typical Suns fashion you fucked it up.
1983-84: You are 41-41 and somehow crash-landed in the playoffs again. Just take the first round loss and get out.
1983-84 First Round: Wait what? You beat the Trail Blazers 3-2?
1983-84 Semi-Finals: AND you beat the Jazz in 6 despite them owning you in the regular season? A trip to the Conference Finals is in your future
1983-84 Conference Finals: The clock strikes midnight on the Cinderella story as the Lakers make you their bitch for the 3rd time in 5 seasons.
1984-85: Make that a 4th time in 6 seasons and they sweep you a 2nd time.
1985-88: You are trash after a decade of chasing a championship. But it won't be long before a new chance arises
1988-89: Alright fuck this shit you are here for BLOOD THIS TIME. 55-27!
1988-89 First Round/Semi-Finals: You destroy the Nuggets and Warriors. Now is the time
1988-89 Conference Finals: TIME TO GET SWEPT BY THE LAKERS AGAIN
1989-90: Another 54 win season and another shot at glory! THIS TIME IT WILL BE DIFFERENT!
1989-90 First Round: You squeak past a Jazz team and your prize is. Oh dear god not them again. NO!
1989-90 Semi-Finals: You DID IT. You finally beat those cocksuckers from Los Angeles in a series! In 5 games no less!
1989-90 Conference Finals: You turn this triumph into misery by being eliminated in 6 games by the Portland Trail Blazers. Fuck.
1990-91: You squander 55-27 again by being beaten 3-1 by the Jazz. It must be nice to have this many years of talent and not get a damn thing out of it.
1991-92: You sweep the Spurs. Remember that name. Course now Portland is back and bitch slaps you in 5.
1992-93: Shit needs to change! Heres a Charles Barkley to lead you to the promised land and by god does it work. Barkley wins MVP and you go 62-20
1992-93 First-Round to Conference Finals: You slay your sleep paralysis demon in the Lakers and edge past the Spurs and the team that robbed you of a championship back in 78 in the SuperSonics. For the 2nd time in your history you are going to the NBA Finals
1992-93 NBA Finals: You run into the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls 3peat buzzsaw and lose in 6. This definitely won't be the end of your window though
1993-94: It was the end of your window. Hakeem knocks you out in route to a ring.
1994-95: Last year was brutal for you guys. You get consolation though. Losing to the Rockets again. They win the championship again.
1995-96: You have a new sleep paralysis demon. It's name is the Spurs. Charles Barkley fucks off for the Rockets via trade.
1996-97: The SuperSonics also crush your balls in a vice because this is Phoenix and if you aren't regularly getting beaten by Seattle you are the Diamondbacks and you've won a championship unlike the other 3 teams in Phoenix. But at least you drafted Steve Nash.
1997-98: Lose to the Spurs in the first round again for reasons of Texas owns this franchise.
1998-99: Trade Steve Nash to the Dallas Mavericks after the 1998 NBA Draft because you are fucking idiots. Your reward for this incompetence is being swept by Portland
1999-2000: You actually beat the Spurs in a playoff series. Only to then lose to WHAT DO YA KNOW! THE FUCKING LAKERS. Least you drafted this Shawn Marion guy.
2000-2001: The Jason Kidd experiment ends as you lose another playoff series to your other overlords from California. The now Sacramento Kings.
2001-2002: You can't lose in the first round if you don't even make them!
2002-2003: Heres this Amar'e Stoudemaire guy. Oh and another First Round exit to the fucking Spurs
2003-2004: 29-53. You are trash. Something needs to CHANGE NOW!
2004-2005: The answer is to ask the Mavericks to give you Steve Nash back and make Mike D'Antoni the full-time head coach. He wins MVP and for the 2nd time in team history you go 62-20
2004-2005 First Round-Semi-Finals: You swept the Grizzlies and made Dallas pay for giving Nash back. Only a brick wall could stop you.
2004-2005 Conference Finals: It's name is the Spurs
2005-2006: It's ok because you came back on strong and have another shot at the crown with Nash winning his 2nd MVP in as many years.
2005-2006: First Round-Semi-Finals: You barely survive a double attack from the Los Angeles duo of the Lakers and Clippers and all that is in your way is the Mavericks team you crushed a year before
2005-2006 Conference Finals: Revenge is a bitch as the Mavericks assblast you in 6
2006-2007: 61-21. 1st seed for the 3rd straight season. For the love of god this has to be the year
2006-2007 First Round: You beat the living shit out of the Lakers in 5 games! The dragon is dead!
2006-2007 Semi-Finals: YOU LOST TO THE FUCKING SPURS AGAIN???????
2007-2008: It's time to make a move. Shawn Marion is tired of being dangled over the trading block like a juicy steak. SEND HIM TO MIAMI TO BRING IN THE WASHED UP REMAINS OF SHAQ
2007-2008 First Round: You didn't lose to the Spurs in 6 games this time! You lose to them in 5.
2008-2009: Miss the playoffs entirely as the most notable thing Shaq does is win All-Star Game MVP
2009-2010: Trade the malignant cancer to the Cavaliers and rebound to a 54-28 3 seed in the West.
2009-2010 First Round/Semi-Finals: You channel dark magic to slay your demons in the Spurs and Trail Blazers. Dare we hope?
2009-2010 Conference Finals: YOU. LOST. ANOTHER. FUCKING. SERES. TO. THE. LAKERS.
2010-2020: The wheels completely fucking fall off as Steve Nash leaves and you wander the desert until at last a new core forms behind DeAndre Ayton, Devin Booker, and a MASSIVELY overpaid poorly aging Chris Paul
2020-2021: To no real surprise after barely being under .500 the season before you charge into the playoffs as the 2 seed.
2020-2021 First Round-Conference Finals: You allow the sports world to laugh at LeBron James crying like a bitch, obliterate the Nuggets and the league MVP, and then survive a series with the Clippers where Patrick Beverly tries to assassinate every member of the starting lineup. For the 3rd time in team history. You are going to the NBA Finals.
2020-2021 NBA Finals: You proceed to become one of less than 35 teams to blow a 2-0 series lead and you do it to the team that got Kareem instead of you all those years ago. The Milwaukee Bucks.
2021-22: You are destroying teams left and fucking right. Devin Booker is an MVP candidate. Monty Williams wins Coach of the Year. The hunger drives you to a franchise-record 64-18 record and no team that has been 8 games better than the rest of the league has EVER failed to win it all. AT LAST THE SUNS WILL RISE AS CHAMPIONS!
2021-22 First Round: Ok that series against New Orleans was a little disappointing but it's ok. The 8 seed is a tune-up series 99% of the time and Monty broke momentum by resting the starters. You'll be fine. It's only the Mavericks next. Beat them and worry about whoever wins the 2 seed-3 seed series.
2021-22 Semi-Finals: What ensues is perhaps the greatest travesty this franchise has ever committed against its fans. Up 2-0 the Suns proceed to be obliterated the rest of the series before a 43 point loss in Game 7. All the hype, statistics saying it was a LOCK, broken records, and everything is destroyed before your very eyes. Worse this might've been your last chance as Chris Paul's albatross of a contract has you deep in the shit and unable to pay guys like DeAndre Ayton. YOU BLEW IT!!!!!!!!!
2022-23: Congratulations! Robert Sarver has been removed from power! Celebrate this by massively overpaying DeAndre Ayton and then looking like you are running in place like a hamster on a hamster wheel. Jae Crowder is being a little bitch about Cam Johnson being on the team. It's time to make a move. Trade Crowder, Johnson, and Mikhail Bridges to the Nets in exchange for Kevin motherfucking Durant. He immediately gets injured 2 games after showing up. The end result is a 45-37 record and a team that wouldn't have made the playoffs if the Western Conference didn't shit itself.
2022-23 First Round: You expended all your luck to barely win every game you won causing the most unconvincing 5-game series win in recent memory against a Clippers team that had no Paul George and no Kawhi Leonard. You are going to do it again aren't you?
2022-23 Semi-Finals: ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? You can't win in Denver. The refs hate you the entire series. The NBA refuses to suspend Jokic because fuck you that's why. AND YOU GET BLOWN THE FUCK OUT AT HOME TO LOSE THE SERIES A SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR? DO YOU HAVE NO FUCKING SHAME?
2023-24 Offseason: The fans are justifiably pissed at Monty Williams. This guy just stands on the sidelines being carried by high-end talent and turns into a potato when shit hits the fan. Get fucking fired and replaced by the massively overrated clown and ex-LeBron puppet that is Frank Vogel. Then send a bag of 2nd round picks and more bench pieces and the King of Choking to the Wizards in exchange for Bradley Beal.
If you'd stopped here you might've won something. Instead, you listen to the cry for blood again. The fans are pissed at DeAndre Ayton. He is a bum they say. After so many years he should've become an elite big man they say. They aren't exactly wrong but what you do is ASININE. GET IN ON THE THREE-TEAM TRADE THAT SENDS AYTON TO PORTLAND, DAMIAN LILLARD TO MILWAUKEE, AND JUSUF NURKIC TO PHOENIX. CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE GOTTEN A BIG MAN WHO IS ALMOST 50% WORSE AT SCORING AND REBOUNDS AT ABOUT THE SAME CLIP.
2023-24 Season: What ensues is entirely predictable. You have no defense. Your bench is being carried by Grayson Allen doing his best bargain-brand Steph Curry impersonation. Bradley Beal is clearly getting old and Durant and Booker simply cannot score enough to consistently drag this team to victory resulting in a 49-33 season where you barely avoid the new-fangled play-in bullshit
2023-24 First Round: You get mauled by a Minnesota Timberwolves team that is somehow good and are swept in the first round. Half the fandom is blaming Devin Booker again like its somehow his fault that the front office thinks NBA team structure is a math problem they are only allowed to give wrong answers for. Another chunk of it pretends the writing isn't on the wall that this team is about to collapse. Then there's the realists that know its OVER. All the hopes. All the dreams. Lying in ruin yet again.
I've been critical of this team in the past as this is the 3rd or 4th year I've updated this Legacy of Failure but this may truly be the end of the window. This was it. All-in or bust. A team that hit 20 at blackjack and said "hit me" instead of taking their winnings. Now where are they. A team WELL over the cap sinking endless cash into 3 players without the skill pieces for it to matter. There is no defensive prowess. No bench depth. There isn't even a quality big man unless you count rebounding as all a center should be doing. It's just Booker, Durant, Beal...and Durant will be 36 next year and Beal is about to be 31 and in VISIBLE DECLINE. The only option I see at this point is to just launch the nukes into the rotten structure. Trade Durant and Beal for whatever you can get and tank your asses off in the hope you can form a more decently built core around Booker...course even if you pull that off you'll still have to contend with a multitude of resurgent teams like the Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder. You blew another golden window for success doing the same old shit that always costs you in the end.
and as a long-time fan of this team who knows damn well the Suns are the NBA equivalent of the Atlanta Falcons with the winning history of the Minnesota Vikings. I may legitimately cry if Oklahoma City, Denver, or Minnesota win this years Finals. The Thunder haven't won since they were the SuperSonics. Denver would be a repeat champion despite a history of being trash. Minnesota would be yet another fucking team leaving the championshipless club while the Suns remain entrenched in it despite having so many chances to win that they should probably be a top 5 team in terms of championships won. I can't take anymore of watching team after team finally win while the Suns keep punching us in the dicks.

2024.04.27 05:15 JorVetsby I feel like a stand-up comic who bombs day after day

I started teaching in 2010, and for much of my career I had a lot of success by blending content with humor. I teach high-school ELA, and I'd always try to add witty comments whenever I could, whether it's commenting on something from a story, or just doing some light "crowd work" any time an opportunity presented itself in class. If something mildly interesting happened to me over the weekend, I'd often start class on Monday with a quick little bit about it (in true stand-up fashion). Obviously some classes are going to be more responsive than others, but I always felt like it's was working, and usually working well, since the main thing it did was invite banter and conversation with the kids, creating a fun and comfortable atmosphere.
But the last few years, that approach has completely fallen flat. So many of these kids seemingly have no sense of humor, or even a sense of what is supposed to be funny. Now, whenever I try to tell a humorous anecdote or make a witty comment, I get nothing but crickets almost every time. They just stare at me blankly, or worse, won't t even look up from their phone. Needless to say, it didn't take long before I stopped even trying to be funny. Now I feel like a completely lifeless teacher who's been stripped of his superpower, just delivering straightforward and bland lessons, not even bothering to be funny or witty. It's not like I'm expecting big uproarious laughter, but usually you can expect some acknowledgement of a joke from your audience.
And I think I know why. Covid and tech addiction are major contributors, for sure, but the main reason is that the current generation of teens have never actually known comedy. Most adults grew up on watching sitcoms and comedy films. As a teen, I watched and rewatched Friends and Seinfeld, as well as all the classic comedies of the 90s and 2000s. But they don't watch TV anymore. Their whole concept of humor comes from 10-second video clips of epic fails, and they only know shows like SNL or Friends if they happen to accidentally flash across their screens. 10 years ago kids were obsessed with The Office, which was great, but those days are long gone. Basically, today's kids do not pick up on nuance or subtlety, so for something to be funny it has to be big and obvious and over the top. But that is not me, and definitely not my sense of humor.
So yeah, every day I feel like a comedian who just can't win with his audience, and I don't know what to do. Of the five classes I teach, I actually have one that has a lot of fun personalities and are a joy to teach, but my other four are all dead silent and joyless, and that has really taken a toll on my mental health this year. I'm not connecting with them, I feel like a terrible teacher, and it makes me want to quit and do anything else that won't involve me feeling like a failure every day.
Anyone else having this experience?

He previously was the National Director of the Aboriginal Peoples Commission (APC) for the Jean Chretien government and is currently an advisor to the B.C. government on Indian and Northern Affairs and a Director for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC).

2024.04.26 15:35 cheeksonclouds Wore a kebaya for nothing

Context: Continuation from this post
We had our company Hari Raya celebration at a hotel recently. I wore a baby pink baju kebaya and we matched color-wise (he looked cute af in his baju melayu). He didn’t comment on my outfit or talk about anything else aside from work. We did not sit together either. It was fun while it lasted. Just a little sad after the event because it was the only time I could get to know him better outside of work but I didn’t get to interact with him much. It feels as though he doesn’t care to act on our mutual attraction since he didn’t take the chance to interact with me more. But then again he is quiet and shy…so I don’t know.

2024.04.25 21:50 Another206er What do you consider to be the best/most iconic Seattle Sports moments?

I’m talking the moments that made/make you emotional, or a play call that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stick up; those epic sports occurences that will live on forever. In celebration of our rich sports history, I’d love to hear which moments stand out to you as all-time, unforgettable events!
Here are my top 9 in no particular order. Apologies for the recency bias and wordy post!
1995: The Double:
Just thinking about this play makes me miss Dave Niehaus so much. The man lived and breathed baseball, so for him to make this iconic call must have been the greatest thrill. In my opinion this is the best moment in Mariners history, and iconic to all of baseball. There’s not much sweeter than watching some of the biggest legends in Seattle Sports take the playoff series from the Yankees in the King Dome. Watch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_7x_77DeSU
2014: The Nope (Also referred to as the Tip):
Oh it felt so good to beat our rival 49ers like this in front of a home crowd. It was probably one of, if not the, loudest games in Seattle sports history. It was such a well-fought game between two of the biggest powerhouses in the league, back and forth all game and the nail-biting last drive by the 49ers was so tense. I was watching the game at a bar in Bellingham and you could have heard a pin drop during the final minutes until Sherman tipped it to Smith to send us to the Super Bowl. The whole place erupted; people were jumping on tables and spilling their drinks all over. Such an epic climax to an amazing game. Watch the last drive by the 49ers (final 5 minutes):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXhHim68J-E&t=36s
2004: The Storm bring home Seattle’s first Championship trophy in 26 years:
The first one is always the sweetest. Sue Bird, Lauren Jackson, Betty Lennox; all legends. The Storm defeating the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA Finals was monumental and would lead to Seattle’s first pseudo sports dynasty. Unfortunately, all I could find was this super grainy video of the postgame celebration after they clinched the title (watch):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vqwLxAWkA4&t=67s
2016: Sounders FC beat Toronto 5-4 in PKs to win their first MLS Cup:
Specifically Stefan Frei’s save on the second PK by Toronto stands out to me as the defining moment. Granted it wasn’t the best try taken by Bradley but it still takes incredible reflexes to guess right and make the save. The boys buttoned it up by making all 5 of theirs, which is also quite a feat considering the pressure. It was a huge moment for the Sounders who would go on to repeat the following year. Watch the tense shootout:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duhzQjhY1GY
1996: Payton and Kemp outlast Malone, Stockton, Jazz in Game 7 to advance to the NBA Finals:
We were such a good team that year. Payton and Kemp seemed unbeatable to me when I was a little kid, they just played such complementary ball. The last free throws by Hersey to nail the coffin shut on the series were beautiful. After that game my young naivety really assumed we were the team that could finally dethrone Michael Jordan and the Bulls in the Finals. Oh how wrong I was lol. The last five minutes of the Conference Finals were epic though. Watch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65Bd8vQY7Vc
2010: The Beast Quake:
Hands down this is my favorite one. Marshawn icing the game while being underdogs against the defending Super Bowl Champions at home in this fashion was just dope. I get emotional just listening to the play call from the commentary, I can recite it by heart I've watched it so many times. Steve Raible’s call has even more excitement but I didn’t hear until well after the game. The Beast Quake really felt like the moment the Seahawks franchise turned the corner and became serious contenders. Watch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSBJxtEed1s
2022: Cal Raleigh Walk-off HR in the bottom of the 9th to end the Drought:
Talk about chills, Cal Raleigh just has ice in his veins. This is one of my favorite at-bats ever. Ending the 21-year playoff drought in the biggest moment against a divisional rival in front of a home crowd is beyond epic. Big Dumper crushes the slider in the bottom of the 9th inning with two outs and cements his place in history. My favorite part is him mouthing “holy fuck” as he rounds the bases in front of a full stadium going wild. Watch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTGoZLPstJw
1979: Sonics bring home first and only NBA Championship in a Finals rematch with the Bullets:
I wasn’t alive for this one but how exciting it must have been to hoist the city’s first championship win since the 1917 Stanley Cup (62 years!?) against a powerhouse Bullets team no less. I am quite sour that Oklahoma City now owns the banner, just plain wrong. Watch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFCMXLtTu3Y
1991: Washington Huskies defeat Michigan in Rose Bowl, split NCAA Title with Miami:
Still our only College Football title (I really thought 2023 was our year, ugh) and often ranked as one of the best NCAA teams of all time. I was too young to appreciate it when it happened but this was a huge achievement to usher in the modern era of football for UW. Great for the school, and great for the city. Watch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KleZ8Ujqn8

Honorable Mentions:
1917: Seattle Metropolitans win Stanley Cup, a first for an American team
2001: Mariners tie single season record with 116 wins
2012: King Felix’s Perfect Game against Tampa Bay
2014: First Play Safety on Peyton Manning in Super Bowl XLVIII (43-8)
2015: Chris Matthews' onside kick recovery vs Green Bay in the NFC Championship Game, one of the greatest/most improbable comebacks in NFL History (I got to be at the game for this one, it was absolutely incredible to witness)
2022: Sounders become first MLS team to take home the CONCACAF Champions League Trophy, beating Pumas UNAM 3-0 at home to seal the aggregate
2022: Mariners comeback win over the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS after being down 8-1 in the 5th inning
2023: University of Oregon kicker misses the game-winning field goal at Husky Stadium, protecting our perfect season as fans storm the field (also got to attend this game, the vibes were insane, such a fun rivalry)

TL;DR: Seattle sports are amazing and I love this city’s history!

Please tell me about the ones I missed! I'd love to hear other great Seattle Sports stories.

2024.04.25 06:48 Head-Locksmith-3367 Search in Manorville could mean something bigger

Search in Manorville could mean something bigger
https://abcnews.go.com/US/new-search-underway-tied-gilgo-beach-murder-investigation/story?id=109581649
This really makes me believe that Rex could be responsible for more of the bodies found alongside Ocean Parkway. I really don’t think there are two killers as most people on here would believe, and I think this could prove it.
Rex Heuermann has been charged with the murders of Amber Lynn Costello, Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, and Megan Waterman as I’m sure everyone in this subreddit probably knows and would agree he is most likely guilty as there is a heap load of evidence against him, but there were so many other bodies found on this stretch of land and a few of them were escorts just like the Gilgo 4.
Both Valerie Mack and Jessica Taylor were working as escorts when they were murdered, and both bodies were found deceased in a similar manner and dumped in Manorville AND Gilgo beach. Yes, there’s a different modus operandi from the Gilgo 4 but the fact that SCPD is searching these areas right now in connection to the LISK really makes me think they’ve found something in connection to Rex. He’s currently in custody and is most likely guilty for the Gilgo 4, so I would think they’re going to try and connect him to the other victims such as Valerie Mack and Jessica Taylor before pointing fingers at someone else. They need to rule him out first, if anything. It is also not unlikely that Heuermann committed these murders, as Valerie Mack and Jessica Taylor fit into Rex’s “type”, petite women with Mack standing at 5’ and Taylor at 5’3. Heuermann also would’ve been around 35 at the time of their murders so it’s not far fetched to say he could’ve been killing for many years before the Gilgo 4. The fact that all of the victims were essentially lined up across the same stretch of land, and the newer bodies were no longer being dismembered, could have been a sign that the killer was getting too relaxed and wasn’t too worried about where they were dropping the bodies and IF Heuermann committed most if not all of the victims, it lines up with the timing and manners of each body found. So let’s go back and talk about the earliest potential victim of Heuermann, Karen Vergata.
Karen Vergata was just recently identified this past summer and this was a HUGE breakthrough for this case. Her identity was revealed shortly after Heuermann was arrested, however he was not claimed to be a suspect.
Vergata’s legs were discovered in Davis Park on Fire Island, which is close but technically on a different island than Gilgo Beach and Tobay Beach, which is where her skull was found.
Vergata was last seen around Valentine’s Day 1996 and her remains were discovered later that year in David Park.
The only evidence I have for Vergata being a victim of Heuermann is the fact that she was also an escort who found herself in very similar situations to other victims. She needed quick money to support herself and her lifestyle and was desperate to do so, much like the Gilgo 4. I couldn’t find anything about her height, but if she was on the shorter side that could be an argument as well. But most importantly what persuaded me was this affidavit.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wq_AFpVrYSuw4sQcljJdhpy1WfLcZ-Qy/view?usp=drivesdk
If you’re interested in this case and you haven’t read this, you should. It’s extremely compelling and seems to me to be pretty detailed oriented. Of course, we do not know how much of this is true or correctly remembered, as this was over 20 years ago. But if what this person says is true, then Karen Vergata was undoubtedly a victim of Heuermann. This also leads us to believe that maybe Asa knew what was going on to a certain extent. Maybe she didn’t know that her husband was extremely violent, but she knew he used sex workers and they hosted “swinger parties”. If this were true, then that could suggest that Asa had low self-esteem due to her husband sleeping with other women but was just happy to have a husband who provided, or she didn’t care. But being an immigrant from Iceland, she could be easily manipulated by Heuermann as maybe English wasn’t her first language, and listened to him because she knew and trusted him. But I think it would make perfect sense for Heuermann to claim that everything she has had been given to her from him, which could hint at a narcissistic personality, like Ted Bundy. This affidavit would also hint at the fact that Heuermann had homosexual tendencies, which leads me to bring up John Doe, who was found near the Gilgo 4.
John Doe is an unidentified victim who was described as an Asian man between the ages of 17-23, 5’6, and dressed in women’s clothing. It is assumed they died 5-10 years before they were discovered. If what this affidavit says is true and Heuermann was potentially attracted to men, the possibility of John Doe being a victim of Heuermann is also not far fetched, at all. Heuermann’s internet searches would back up this claim as well:
“Twink” is defined as a young, attractive, usually slim gay man.
The fact that Heuermann was searching for an “asian Twink” makes it even more uncanny, I think. Some people theorize that John Doe was trans because they were found wearing women’s clothing, however John Doe could’ve been an escort who identified as a man but was under the request to wear women’s clothing by Heuermann, who seemed to be more interested in women.
Now lets look at the timeline of all the victims in comparison to the map I made (because I don’t like the ones on google):
Potential and confirmed LISK victims chronological order:
First victim: Karen Vergata - Dismembered - Legs found on Davis Island in 1996 - Skull found on Tobay Beach in 2011
Second victim: Peaches - Dismembered - Torso discovered in a trash bin near Hempstead Lake Park in 1997 - Remains found near Jones Beach in plastic bag in 2011
Third Victim: Peaches baby - Skeletal remains found on Gilgo Beach near Valerie MacK - No sign of trauma
Fourth victim: Valerie Mack - Dismembered - Torso discovered in Manorville in 2000 - Head, hands, right foot found on Gilgo Beach in 2011
Fifth Victim: Jessica Taylor - Dismembered - Torso discovered in Manorville in 2003 - Skull, pair of hands, and a forearm discovered on Gilgo Beach in 2011
Sixth Victim: John Doe (Asian Male) - Blunt force trauma - First non-dismembered victim besides Peaches baby - Earliest time of the death could have been 2000-2005
Seventh and Eigth victims: Maureen Brainard-Barnes and Melissa Barthelemy - Maureen Brainard Barnes disappeared in 2007 - Melissa Barthelemy’s body disappeared in 2009 - Both found in 2010 - Both reportedly died to strangulation
Ninth victim: Shannan Gilbert - Disappeared in 2010 - SCPD wrote off her death as drowning, but autopsy says death in “inconclusive” - Discovered in 2011 in a marsh
Tenth Victim: Megan Waterman - Disappeared in 2010 - Found in 2011 - Reportedly died to strangulation
Eleventh Victim: Amber Lynn Costello - Disappeared in 2010 - Found in 2011 - Reportedly died to strangulation
I know I didn’t really get into Peaches and Peaches baby, but I don’t have enough evidence to link them to Heuermann besides that he lives 20 minutes away from where her torso was found, and she was dismembered during this hypothetical era where Heuermann would dismember and scatter his victims. The 4 first potential LISK victims were all dismembered excluding Peaches Baby and John Doe, but we don’t know when exactly John Doe was murdered. If Heuermann did commit these crimes, maybe Peaches Baby wasn’t dismembered because she was a toddler, perhaps there was hesitation due to their age or they didn’t feel the need because of how young they were. It wasn’t until after John Doe that Heuermann probably started getting comfortable after not being caught for so many years, and stopped dismembering the bodies and just dumping them in this remote area where nobody had ever caught him. I just find it interesting that if you follow the timeline of the murders, there IS some sort of pattern.
I also know I didn’t really talk about Shannan Gilbert because I feel there is also a lack of evidence. However I do have a theory. But let me start off by saying that to everyone who thinks that Shannan drowned, I truly think you’re mistaken. I mean just read the autopsy report! No abuse of drugs were found, she was found facing up (which is uncommon in drowning victims) and also CLEARLY states that the findings are consistent with homicidal strangulation, and clearly states that there is no evidence of drowning. So, Shannan (also an escort) makes a panicked call to 911 from a town awfully close to Gilgo Beach while at a clients house, pleading with the 911 officer to send help because somebody is after her, she’s going to be killed. Shannans body is found in the marsh with a missing larynx and a fractured thyroid bone and SCPD points to drowning. SCPD wrote off her death so easily and everyone believed it because of her 911 call (not like the receiver was being helpful at all, though). But I believe that Shannan really did have someone after her. Just because she was hysterical does not mean she was on drugs, I mean I would be hysterical if I knew someone was after me in this isolated town out in the middle of nowhere. Shannan also suffered from BPD, which could explain her “odd” behavior. I find it even more suspicious that her idiot driver left without her, like why on earth would he ever leave her in a state like that? Was he not concerned at all by what she was saying? I have so many questions.
Wrapping all of this up now. IF SCPD is searching Manorville right now in connection to Heuermann and they find something, or if he really was connected or responsible for Valerie Mack and Jessica Taylor, this now opens the doors to many possibilities for this case. This would prove that Heuermann had a different modus operandi in the early 2000s, and who knows how many times this could’ve been changed in between then and now, maybe when he was even younger. This also would prove that dismemberment was something that Heuermann would have had experience in, and could be considered responsible for Karen Vergata and Peaches who were dismembered in and dumped in a similar fashion. And if Heuermann could be considered for those murders, John Doe, who was found in the same cluster of bodies, could have also been a victim, and Heuermanns search history could support that.
I’ve been very invested with the LISK since Heuermann was arrested and I really hope he suffers for what he did. He potentially took the lives of so many young women who were just trying to support themselves. Women with hopes, dreams, lives, families, and a purpose. As a young woman from Long Island, I want justice for all of the women whose lives were taken from them for the pleasure of a sick man who didn’t care for life. He needs to answer for his crimes and give these families and these women closure. They were more than just escorts, they were people. They were a mother’s and daughters.
Sorry if this is disorganized, this case has been my hyper fixation for almost a year now and getting more information is truly exciting and I needed to thought vomit my theories. We’re so close to unveiling the truth!

Part 1. From the first preaching to the twentieth century

Religion in modern Mongolia
The majority of Mongolians are, deep in their hearts, very religious—although they try in every possible way to distance themselves from religion both at the official level and at home, “confessing” secularism, which is fashionable today. Surprisingly, in secular Mongolia it is the intriguing exoticism of Buddhism and shamanism that attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists coming here from all over the world. And if religion attracts outside observers, it must play a certain role in the lives of the Mongolians. But what role?
Indeed, according to the 1992 Constitution, Mongolia is a secular country that guarantees its citizens the freedom of religion (Article 16, paragraph 15) and does not interfere in the activities of religious organizations established by the existing legislation. Religious institutions, in turn, must not interfere in the work of the State (Article 9). Religious discrimination is prohibited by Article 14, paragraph 2 of the Constitution. [1]
The freedom to practice religion, which appeared with the transition from the ideology of State atheism to building a democratic, liberal society, led to the following statistics: If in the mid-1980s, 80.4 percent of respondents identified themselves as atheists, in 1994 71.1 percent called themselves believers.[2] In 2003, almost seventy-five percent of all Mongolians believed in God.[3]
By 2010, 61.4 percent of the country’s population over the age of fifteen were believers. Of them 86.5 percent were Buddhists—that is, fifty-three percent of the population in this age group. The remaining 38.6 percent identified themselves as “non-believers.” [4]
According to the last census conducted in the country in 2020, only 59.4 percent of Mongolians over the age of fifteen identified as religious believers, of them 87.1 percent identified as Buddhists. [5]
The Mongolian Law on the Relationship Between the State and Religious Institutions, adopted in 1993, regulates State control over the “predominant position of Buddhism”, which nevertheless is not recognized as a State religion. According to Article 4 of this Law, Mongolia “respects the dominant position of Buddhism in order to maintain the unity of the people and historical, cultural and civilizational traditions.” [6] Interestingly, according to the results of ethnosociological surveys from different years, of and personal observations, a significant number of Mongolians (between forty percent and seventy-five percent) support this position of the State. [7]
Today it is almost impossible to say that Mongolia is a country of Buddhists, as it is often portrayed in the press and in the media. Striving for dialogue based on equality and parity with all countries and cultures of the world, the country's Government, after moving away from the socialist model of development, is opening the doors to a variety of religious teachings. And in terms of religious policies the Mongolian leaders are willingly (or maybe willy-nilly) reaching the level of the Mongolian Empire of the thirteenth century, the images and symbols of which are actively used in national practices and rhetoric. The unique diversity of beliefs in the country, their peaceful coexistence with each other and with traditional religions (Buddhism, shamanism and Islam), coupled with unique local cults (for example, the veneration of sacred mountain peaks [8]), which continue to play an important role in the life of society, are a distinctive feature of modern Mongolia—something not every country can boast.
There is no doubt that a soul sincerely striving for the Truth and at the same time wandering through the “labyrinths” of various religions and beliefs is sure to find a path to the Light. This accounts for the slow yet steady awakening of interest and love in Mongolia for Orthodoxy, the history of which officially began in Mongolia 160 years ago, although its roots go deep into the imperial past of the “land of the eternally blue sky”.
A trip into the past
Tsarevich Peter hunting in the vicinity of Rostov. Scene from the icon, “St. Peter, Tsarevich of the Horde”
The first Orthodox Mongolians appeared in the Mongol Empire under Genghis Khan and the first Genghisid rulers, the great Khan’s successors. It is widely known that the Mongol khans provided special protection to the Orthodox Church in Russia. It led to the establishment in 1261 in the capital of the Golden Horde by Metropolitan Cyril II of Kiev and All Russia (+1280) of the Diocese of Sarai to pastor the Orthodox faithful living in the Horde. Initially, the heads of the diocese performed two functions: liturgical and diplomatic (“representing the political interests of the Byzantine Empire at the court of the Horde Khans.” [9]
Among the medieval accounts related to Orthodoxy in Mongolia the conversion to Orthodoxy of Tsarevich Dair Kaidagul of the Horde, nephew of Khan Berke (who ruled the Golden Horde from 1257 to 1266) and great-grandson of Genghis Khan, stands out. Tsarevich Dair became interested in Orthodoxy during a visit to Sarai by St. Cyril, Bishop of Rostov and Yaroslavl (+1262), who preached in the Horde’s capital in 1253. Dair persuaded St. Cyril, who returned to the Horde a few years later, to take him to Rostov. Here he was baptized with the name Peter, and according to his Life, after an appearance of the holy Apostles Peter and Paul he built a monastery on Lake Nero in their honor. After his wife’s death, he took monastic vows and died in 1290 at the monastery he had founded. He was canonized as the Venerable Peter in 1547 under the Holy Hierarch Macarius (c. 1482–1563), Metropolitan of Moscow and All Russia.
Despite the skeptical opinion in historiography that St. Peter of the Horde allegedly had to be baptized after fleeing to Russia in order not to be murdered during dynastic strife, his conversion to Orthodoxy stands apart in a series of conversions to Orthodoxy by the Horde nobility, which took place in the second half of the thirteenth and the early fourteenth centuries. Secular historians agree with this, noting that only St. Peter was baptized solely as a result of preaching (in this case, St. Cyril’s preaching) and was not guided by political, dynastic or other secular circumstances. [10]
Other major historical figures of medieval Russia partly associated with Mongolia were the holy Right-Believing Prince Alexander Nevsky (1221–1263), whose active interaction with the Horde is widely known, and the Holy Hierarch Alexei (c. 1292/1305–1378), Metropolitan of Kiev and All Russia, who cured Taydula, the wife of Khan Uzbek of the Horde, of an eye disease.

The substantive appearance of Orthodoxy in Mongolia dates back to the nineteenth century, when it was the State religion in the Russian Empire and had certain ideological functions. For this reason Orthodox clergymen often followed diplomats to the countries (new and hitherto unknown territories) with which diplomatic ties were being established. This happened in the Qing Empire, which included what is now Mongolia’s vast expanses. The signing of the Treaties of Tianjin (1858) and, to a greater extent, of Beijing (1860) not only lifted restrictions on Russo-Mongolian trade, but also became the prologue [11] to the opening in 1861 of the first Russian consulate in Urga (now Ulaanbaatar) on the territory of Mongolia, and after it to the construction of the first Orthodox Church in honor of the Holy Trinity. According to A.A. Sizova, a specialist in the history of Russia’s consular service in Mongolia, it was “one of the consulate’s first cultural initiatives.” [12] Funds for the church were collected beginning from 1863. The initiator of the fundraising campaign and the idea of building the church was Consul Ya.P. Shishmarev (1833–1915), who served in Mongolia from 1864 for almost half a century. The Orthodox church was built between 1872 and 1875 and consecrated on August 30, 1894.
Prior to the construction of the Orthodox church, services had been celebrated in the consulate building, where the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated on March 22/April 3, 1864.[13] The service was performed by Priest (from 1876 archpriest) John Nikolsky (1831–1893)—at that time the head of the Verkhneudinsk Deanery, cleric of the Cathedral in honor of the Hodegetria Icon in the city of Verkhneudinsk (now the city of Ulan-Ude—the administrative center of the Buryat Republic, Russia). Having celebrated several services, including the Paschal Liturgy, Fr. John left Urga on April 26/May 8, 1864. Later, from 1866 to 1892, he was the rector of the Holy Resurrection Church in the city of Kyakhta (in the Buryat Republic close to the Mongolian border).
After Fr. John Nikolsky, at the request of the Beijing Ecclesiastical Mission (hereinafter: the BEM) to the Most Holy Governing Synod Hieromonk Sergei (Artamonov) was sent in 1865 to Urga on a one-year mission. Even before the end of his mission term Fr. Sergei reported to the head of the BEM in Beijing about his desire to serve in Urga for the rest of his life. But after a while, for personal reasons, he was transferred to the Holy Transfiguration Monastery at the embassy and joined its brotherhood. [14]
The next priest who was sent on a mission was Hieromonk Gerontius (Levitsky), a member of the BEM, who served in Urga from 1866 to 1868. For a short time (from October 1872 until his death on December 27 of the same year), Hieromonk Cornelius (Palikin), a BEM member, served in Urga. He was buried at the Russian cemetery in Urga. [15]
Holy Trinity Church in Ulaanbaatar
A permanent priest in Urga was appointed by decree of the bishop of Irkutsk in May 1893. The first rector of the Holy Trinity Church in Urga was Priest Nikolai Shastin (1862–?), a missionary from Tsakir stanitsa (village) of the Transbaikal Ecclesiastical Mission (today the territory of the Zakamensk district of the Buryat Republic). He served in Urga until 1895. It was he who consecrated the consulate church. The newly appointed rector arrived in Mongolia together with Reader Joseph Kornakov, who graduated from the Irkutsk Theological Seminary. In November 1895, Fr. Nikolai, who was very fluent in Chinese, was appointed BEM member and assigned to St. Alexander Nevsky Church in Hankou (now part of Wuhan, Hubei Province, China), from where about a year later he was sent to Beijing, after which he served for several years in Qiqihar. Later he resigned from the priesthood and returned to Hankou with a new family after the Revolution of 1917 “as an émigré and a refugee.”[16] Thus, despite some allegations,[17] information about Fr. Nikolai’s life can be traced after 1897 right until the dissolution of the Russian Empire; his further destiny is unknown.
The physician Pavel Nikolaevich Shastin
It should be said that in literature in connection with the biography of the Russian and Soviet doctor Pavel Nikolaevich Shastin (1872–1953), who is famous in Mongolia, two different priests are often mixed up: namely Fr. Nikolai Pavlovich Shastin, rector of the Urga church, and Nikolai Iakinfovich Shastin (1851–1909), who served in Irkutsk churches. The latter was the father of P.N. Shastin, the father of modern medicine in Mongolia, and accordingly, the grandfather of the famous Mongolist Nina Pavlovna Shastina (1898–1980).[18]
In the spring of 1895, Priest Alexei Ushmarsky (?), a missionary of Ust-Kiran stanitsa (village), which is now in the Kyakhta district of the Buryat Republic, celebrated the services according to the Typikon of Holy Week, Pascha and Bright Week in Urga.[19] Between 1897 and 1899 Priest Vsevolod Ivanov, an alumnus of St. Petersburg Theological Academy, was rector of the Holy Trinity Church.
From 1901 to 1913 the rector of the Orthodox church in Urga was Archpriest Mily Chefranov (1855-no earlier than 1913). During his relatively long ministry in Urga, Fr. Mily studied the history of Orthodoxy in Mongolia and showed great zeal in the mission, leaving a vivid description of his activities.[20]
New Hieromartyr Amphilochius (Skvortsov)
From 1912 to 1914 Hieromonk Amphilochius (Skvortsov), a private associate professor at the Kazan Theological Academy, stayed on a mission in Mongolia to study the Tibetan language, Tibetan literature and Buddhism.[21] Between 1925 and 1926 he served as Bishop of Krasnoyarsk and Yeniseisk; from 1928—Bishop of of Melekess, Vicar of the Samara Diocese; he was executed by a firing squad in 1937; in 2000 he was canonized and ranked among the holy New Martyrs and confessors of Russia for churchwide veneration.
The last rector of the consulate church (1914-1921) in Urga was Priest Fyodor Parnyakov (1870–1921), a cleric of the Irkutsk Diocese, sent to Mongolia at his own request.[22] By that time, Fr. Fyodor had proved himself an active organizer of parish schools, and since 1913 he had been a member of the East Siberian Branch of the Russian Geographical Society. Curiously enough, he married Maria Reshikova, the daughter of Priest M. Reshikov (Reshchikov?) from the village of Kudara (now in the Kabansk district of the Buryat Republic) on September 20, 1891, near Mongolia--at the Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the village of Ust-Kyakhta.[23]
In addition to celebrating services and pastoring Orthodox people in Mongolia, Fr. Fyodor took an energetic part in extra-liturgical work, setting up a parish trust under the auspices of Consul General A.J. Miller. In addition to specific parish affairs, the area of responsibility of the trust included the organization of schools and a commercial college (opened in 1916), libraries, educational lectures, concerts (a string orchestra of twenty to twenty-two instruments was organized), and the decision to construct a new church. Fr. Fyodor was also an editor of a Mongolian newspaper called The Urga Consumer Society,[24] and between 1914 and 1917 he made several trips around the country, becoming the first Orthodox priests to visit remote Russian colonies from Urga up to Uliastay, Hovd and Ulaangom.
In addition to the church in Urga, thanks to the zeal of Russian diplomats, chapels were built in the frontier town of Maimachen (now Altanbulag of the Selenga aimag/district) and in Uliastai. The construction of a church was planned in Uliastai, and fundraising began in 1916 (the Revolution prevented the implementation of this project). A prayer room was also equipped in a Russian population center in the center of Urga two and a half miles west of the consulate church. According to some information, the missionary camp was set up on Lake Khövsgöl, most likely in the north, since the camp had connections with the Nilova Pustyn health resort, located in the Tunka Valley (today the village of Nilovka in the Tunka district of the Buryat Republic—famous for its hydrotherapy—which bears the name of a monastery that once existed here).[25]
Archpriest John Vostorgov, a Synodal missionary
In July 1916,[26] in order to examine the prospects for missionary work and to promote sobriety, the Synodal missionary Archpriest John Vostorgov and the head of the Transbaikal Ecclesiastical Mission Archimandrite Ephraim (Kuznetsov; from November 1916—Bishop of Selenga, Vicar of the Transbaikal Diocese) visited Mongolia. There is evidence that the two clergymen had first met in Mongolia during their first trip in the summer of 1913, when the conditions for the “hoped for opening of an Orthodox mission” were being considered.[27] The plans were not destined to be fulfilled because of the catastrophic changes in the country. On September 5, 1918, Bishop Ephraim and Archpriest John were executed by a firing squad in Moscow, and in 2000 both were canonized as holy New Martyrs of Russia.
Fr. Fyodor Parnyakov, too, suffered a martyr's death. After being imprisoned and tortured, he was hacked to death with a saber in February 1921. The body of the murdered priest was thrown onto the bank of the Tuul Gol River.
The last recorded priest who served in Urga was Nikolai Fedotov (1879–?), who graduated from the Orenburg Theological Seminary. During the Civil War in the summer of 1918 he left his homeland and by the autumn of 1920, through the Kazakh steppes, he had reached the large Russian trading post of Tzain-Shabi (now Tsetserleg of the Arhangay aimag/district). There was a branch of the Mongolian National Bank, a post office, and a telegraph office in Zain-Shabi. Most likely, after the destruction of the trading post by the troops of Baron Roman von Ungern In early 1921,[28] Fr. Nikolai together with Ungern’s army moved to Urga, where he began to serve at the consulate church until May 1923, when the church and all church property were expropriated by the State, after which he served in a private house. N.M. Fedotov wrote that he had been “sent to Urga to serve as a parish priest.”[29] Given the difficult situation during the bloody Civil War in Mongolia and the atmosphere that prevailed around Baron Ungern, it is hard to believe the words that he had been “sent” there.
Judging by his reports in 1924 to the Renovationist structures of the “Living Churches” in Buryatia, including on the celebration of the Church feasts according to the new calendar, it can be concluded that Nikolai Fedotov was not a priest of the Russian Orthodox Church but was in a schismatic organization, or presumably, had no opportunity to contact the official Church during the hard times. Most likely, Baron Ungern (under whom Fr. Fyodor Parnyakov was executed and relative patronage was given to Nikolai Fedotov) did not get to the root of the Renovationist schism.[30]
There are two main opinions as to how and when organized Orthodox Church life stopped in Mongolia. According to the first version, it was after the martyrdom of Archpriest Fyodor Parnyakov in 1921.
Priest Nikolai Kornienko, a modern expert on the history of Orthodoxy in Mongolia, puts forward another point of view, according to which “at least until 1928 there was an Orthodox priest in Urga.”[31] His version is based on one of the last Baptisms in Ulaanbaatar performed over Nikolai Alexandrovich Brilyov, who was born in the year specified. Although, according to Fr. Nikolai, “there is no information about the assignment of other clergy to serve in Mongolia in subsequent times”[32]—that is, based on the context of the events described, after 1924.
In any case, the end of the revolutionary bloodshed in the Mongolian steppes and the proclamation of the Mongolian People’s Republic on November 26, 1924, sidelined Orthodoxy and other religions from public life into the sphere of family rituals of the country’s populace.
So, after some episodes of the Mongolians’ acquaintance with Orthodoxy (mainly the Thirteenth and the fourteenth centuries), the reemergence and spread of Orthodoxy in Mongolia began in 1864, when the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the consulate church of the Holy Trinity. Subsequently, services were celebrated by priests from the BEM who were temporarily sent on a mission there. The first permanent rector in Urga appeared in 1893—it was Priest Nikolai Shastin, who served in Mongolia for two years.
After the last rector of the church in Urga, Fr. Fyodor Parnyakov, was martyred and Priest Nikolai Fedotov, who was probably not in communion with the Russian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, gradually gave up liturgical activity, Orthodox life in Mongolia died out until the 1990s.
