Picks Of The Week (by u/lefuniname)

1. Fanatics - From My Nightmare EP [OYO] 💎

Recommended if you like: Master Error, Amplify, IMANU
Welcome to another entry in my "okay let's explore subgenres that aren't dancefloor or neuro for a week" series!
My first pick is the newest EP by Belgian multi-genre, but nowadays mostly Jump Up producer Fanatics! Since he has started putting out music in 2016, he has been featured on some big labels of the scene like Down2Earth, Cre8dnb and Gradient Records. While those are names that even someone who isn't exactly well-versed in the Jump Up scene (yes I'm talking about me here) could recognize, he still counts as a Hidden Gem of The Week™ for me.
His newest From My Nightmare EP is released on the up-and-coming Hungarian Jump Up label OYO! Not only do they have some of the most unique and creepy cover arts I've ever seen, they've also been putting out some real quality music by some of the best newcomers of the subgenre. Since their inception in 2019, producers like Master Error, L3MMY DUBZ, Gino or Yatuza have joined the army of weird felt puppets (I promise this makes sense if you are familiar with their cover arts). There's not a whole lot known about the origin of the label as far as I can tell, all I know is that they have seen support by fellow Hungarian Neurofunk powerhouse label Eatbrain on multiple occasions, with some of the first OYO releases even having Eatbrain in their label credits on Spotify. So does Jade secretly enjoy Jump Up so much he created a secret Jump Up sister label? Or is he simply supporting the local labels? Well, I sadly don't have an answer to that. No matter what the answer is though, the music is sick, so let's talk about that!
I've been on a real 174bpm 4x4 kick lately. Mostly because I wanted to make a whole mix out of just those kinds of tracks, but also because there's just something inherently fun about the switchup from the usual syncopated rhythms to the more straight-forward ones. So when I started listening to the From My Nightmare EP and the first track, the title track, immediately channeled the spirit of an underground Techno rave in Berlin, my ears perked up. From the weighty and deep kicks, to the white noise stabs, to the horror-esque vocal sample, everything just screams Techno in this. Put those elements together with some snappy snares and a relentless 4x4 beat at the usual DnB tempo and I'm very happy. Just makes me want to close my eyes and move my arms around weirdly in a dark room.
While we're switching back to the usual syncopation, we're keeping the dark bunker vibes alive on Black Magic. Dogs bark, sirens blare in the distance, ominous sounds creep up from the depths below, everything adds to the creepy atmosphere the track is building. Then, the bass-face causing stabs cut through this thick atmosphere to the minimal funky rhythm of the metallic drums. Listening to Black Magic feels like you're in a haunted lumbermill in the foggy woods where no one can help you, running away from the serial killer throwing axes at you, but in a good way.
Let's get even more horror-esque, let's enter the Netherworld! After a charming gentleman tells us that our soul will burn in hell forever, a series of weird-but-surprisingly-catchy jump up melodies on a heavy two-step beat guide us along on our way down. These "newschool jumpup" sounds are usually not my cup of tea, but they are woven into the dark atmosphere well enough and change often enough that I don't mind them here at all. Not just that, I actually kinda enjoy them.
Last but definitely not least we've got Zealot to finish the EP off. I don't even know how to describe this one properly, I feel I lack the vocabulary to convey the madness of its drop. It's fast, it's incredibly hard-hitting, it's got this super catchy swing and flow to it, I simply want to aggressively nod my head while listening to it. The way that rhythm progresses throughout the drop activates a region in my brain that says "yes I like this". Probably my favourite of the EP.
In short: Great stuff if you enjoy the darker variants of Jump Up or 4x4 rhythms.

2. Odyo - Supernatural [Fresh Recordings] 💎

Recommended if you like: Nelver, LQ, Nuvertal
I think after all this darkness we could use some relaxing liquid, don't you agree? That's why my second pick for this week, which is also my second Hidden Gem Of The Week™, is Odyo's lush new single Supernatural!
Odyo is a Vienna-based producer that specialises mostly on the smooth liquid side of DnB. However, he's dabbled in all sorts of other sounds of the genre since he started producing around 9 years ago. Wait, but isn't he only 21-ish? Yup, he actually started producing at age 13 and even started DJing at 12. I feel older with every review. After a few years of sharing his music only on SoundCloud, first under his old KETAPETA moniker (an excellent name if I may say so myself), then from 2016 on as Odyo, the Austrian producer started releasing on the local Fresh Recordings in 2018, where he became a regular. His talent even earned him a spot on the Liquid-focused mega compilation ProgRAM 100: Software on RAM's sister label ProgRAM in 2020! However for this new release he's back on his home label, Fresh Recordings!
... but what is Fresh Recordings even? I'm glad you asked! Like a lot of their contemporaries these days, the Austrian up-and-coming label started in 2014 as an event series and platoform that wants to showcase local bass music talent, with a focus on DnB. Not just that, they even started a video podcast for called FreshTV, with reports about said events, artist interviews and more. Since the launch of the actual label side of things in 2017, they have released great after great track by local underrated talents like Frank Lemon, Skyfade or Phonetic. Seriously, check all of them out, they are so damn good.
Speaking of damn good, let's talk about Supernatural. Let's get the negatives out of the way first: It's too short, I want more. Okay that was all of them, onto the positives: The choir-like background atmosphere is simply beautiful, I love how the main synth sounds and how it flows throughout this short journey, I love how dramatic it sounds when the lower ends of the track go crazy and overpower everything, I love how much flair all the little elements like the Ohhh vocal sample, the short piano part or the techy glitch sound bring to the track, I love love love it all. The best thing? It gets even better with every listen.
Supernaturally beautiful, incredible well-produced liquid. Definitely keeping an eye on Odyo in the future!
Other liquid things from this week: - BCee, Charlotte Haining - Life As We Knew It (<33) - Rochelle Jordan - Love You Good (produced by Alix Perez & Machinedrum!) - KALOA - Should've Listened 💎 - Mage - Hold You Down - Monrroe, Riya - Closer - Hugh Hardie - Dream In Green - Kemi Ade - PROMISE (Redeyes Remix) - Cyantific - Falling Apart - Elixr - Nobody Like You - Warm Roller - Cold Heart 💎 - Catching Cairo - Surface (BCee Remix) - Bert H - Truth Of A Lover / Left Unknown - Muffler - Little Forest

3. Various Artists - X1 [Flexout Audio]

Recommended if you like: Invadhertz, Wingz, Hyroglifics
I think after all this liquid we could use something a bit deeper and darker, don't you agree?
Let's talk Flexout Audio! The London-based label headed by Tom Bassi is pretty much essential listening for everyone who enjoys the deeper ends of the DnB genre spectrum. And that's not just something I just throw out there so it sounds good, they are literally in my top 5 DnB labels. If my personal opinion doesn't convince you, then just look at this small sample list of artists they have featured over the years, many of which they either discovered or have acquired as a core artist for the label: Data 3, Philth, Amoss, Visages, Ed:it, Hyroglifics, Fre4knc, Charli Brix, Subtension. Pure quality all throughout. Tom really did a bom-Bassi-tic job there. As we're now in the middle of Flexout's 10th year of existence, Tom decided to start a new EP series celebrating this milestone, the X series! This week saw the release of the first entry in that promising-sounding series, X1, and it's amazing, so let's talk about it!
We are eased into this first EP with Too Much, the lovely collaboration between Invadhertz, the Italian duo now based in London, Felix Raymon, one of the most underrated german producer in my opinion, and Jamal Dilmen, whose lush vocals you might recognize from a lot of other Felix Raymon tracks. Right from the first few piano notes I knew I would love this track and my gut feeling has definitely not misled me here. Too Much has everything I'm looking for in a deep liquid type track: soothing vocals, deep vibes, great rolling drums. It's not even just the individual elements that are awesome, they are all so incredibly well interwoven that everyone involved managed to create something even better than the sum of its parts. And I haven't even mentioned that insanely well produced heavy switchup towards the end of the drop, where the lush piano melody is amplified tenfold with a massive bass on every note. I will never get too much of this track.
Let's go a little deeper with Trail and his track Chased. On it, the Toulouse-based frenchman blesses our ears with a lot of heavily distorted, sub-bass heavy wubs, contrasted with a lot of sharp but very echoey toots and the occasional processed vocal sample. Might sound simple, but it's laid out in a way that it never gets boring. Great minimal yet heavy track.
Next up we've got Wingz and his remix of Data 3 - Komparen. I am enjoying most of the stuff the Vienna-based (hey, Vienna again!) newcomer is putting out these days, but this one is different. He has knocked it out of the park with this remix. The bassline throughout the drop is sending chills down my spine, the snare slaps me left and right every second and all the melodic variations keep my full attention for all four and a half minutes. Incredible new spin on the already great original.
On the fourth spot of the EP we've got another Flexout veteran: the Bristolian legend Hyroglifics! Or Londoner. I'm not sure. Literally the only mention of his place of origin that I could find was the "BS6" in his Twitter bio and apparently that's in Bristol. Anyway. His track Dogtown is probably the heaviest of the EP. While the drums are shuffling along, a weighty bass is relentlessly following you through most of the track and causing bass faces all over the place. Last but not least we've got Wreckless with his wobbly stepper Don't Want To Forget How Your Voice Sounds, which is definitely in the top 5 longest track names I've come across here. The London-based veteran producer takes a relatively minimal approach and lets the catchy bass-laden melody do most of the work. While that groove slowly burrows itself into your head the longer you listen to the track, various little atmospheric elements and higher-pitched melodies keep coming in and leaving again and before you know it, five minutes have passed.
All in all, a great collection of tunes from all over the deep DnB spectrum!
Other deep things from this week: - Thread - Eyes On You / By Ur Side 💎 - Rohaan - CCC - Incident, Sonic Rain - Echoes / Never Be 💎 - Black Opps - Trauma EP 💎 - Hound - Pressure Point / Amnesia 💎 - Various Artists - XX Remixed [Breakbeats & Basslines] 💎
