Fast forward- the house we live is in probate (we are in so cal/la county). We have not been able to do loan modifications and forbearance because we were waiting for the letters appointing my husband as the executor. During this time our loan got bought out by selene. They requested a birth certificate which we ordered but will take maybe another 2 weeks to get. During this time, we received a notice that a notice of default was entered. There is currently 2 properties- 1 is paid off and a rental currently with a tenant that isnt paying with a pending eviction case. The home we live in is the main we want to stay in but has a delinquent mortgage of 150k out of 280k remaining. The plan was to sell the other home and pay off the remaining balance but our target end date for probate is next year sept and our foreclosure is set to kick in end of Aug. We wanted to do the covid forbearance and do loan modification but since my husband was not appointed to be executor, we were unable to do so until now but it seems like all the protections are all expired?…. My husband and I make ok income combined but we are having to choose between our high cc payments + mortgage but clearly id much rather choose a home than my credit. We can try to do a probate sale but we need to evict the tenant first… so we are currently looking into all options such as chapter 13 while waiting for my husbands birth certificate to arrive. Any advice or personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

My 23 yr old son needs this surgery. My plan's benefit has a quantity limitation for this drug. Anyone else have insurance deny this therapy? What can we do to get it appealed. The Dr. asked me to get records from a previous eye exam, when he told us he needed the surgery. I contacted who we had seen several years ago. They forwarded the records to this specialist. I'm guessing that he expected a denial. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. We have a date for the surgery of June 13 for one eye and June 19 for the other.

Over the course of my 4 year marriage to my partner, I have arrived at the position that I was abused, manipulated, and functionally enslaved to a mentally ill partner.
In simplest form, the progression is apparently observable. She was diagnosed with cancer in October of 2019 while we were engaged. Due to the diagnosis, we moved up our actual marriage date (our wedding was still set for mid-April) to December 1, 2019. Her surgery was December 13, 2019. In my compassion for her, I agreed to move our wedding date up to offset her anxiety around who would be responsible for her if things went south with her surgical treatment.
Our first month of marriage was straightforward; she was on pain meds recovering from surgery, so the main engagement that occurred was me walking her up and down the hospital hallway as she recovered and trying to meet her base physical needs of hygiene, food, and presence. We stayed in the hospital for 2-3 weeks (with recurring hospital visits for complications).
Quickly after we figured out our marital living situation in her small 3-bed apartment with 2 roommates, our relationship devolved. Specifically, she was irritable because of the pain she was in, causing her to lash out at me with regular frequency for small things. If I didn’t put clothes away in the right place, didn’t anticipate her needs (without her communicating them), or ate the wrong food in front of her she would shout at me and decry me for my thoughtlessness.
These small, critical engagements were wounding and created a distance between us – and there was no upside. She was never kind, never paid mind to needs I might have, and started down a path of cultivating a root of bitterness in her soul. She quickly revealed herself to be venomous, hateful, and vindictive when she felt like she was wronged — and any observation of concern about our marriage resulted me in being accused of being mean or insensitive, even if I spent hours or days calculating the best way to share my concern (and I have a master’s degree in communication where I focused in studying disagreement — I know how to carefully package concerns).
During this time, I worked hard to provide for us, foreseeing a significant time period where I would have to be primary financial provider and caregiver. I increased my income each year we were married by around 25%, finishing our marriage at >$80,000 in yearly income, compared to starting our marriage at a modest $42,000 salary (including dramatically improving our healthcare). Frankly, I increased my income to provide for us in spite of the lack of support at home.
But to be clear: I don’t think it would have been particularly difficult to provide financially if I had an ounce of support at home.
However, the relentless criticism and expectation of mind-reading continued through the years. I rationalized this abuse for the first year of our marriage because of all the excuses to be cruel, she had a good one – she had cancer. I hung onto a hope that it would stop. Contrary to my hope, as the years went on – and our expenses climbed – and I continued to work myself to the bone – she continued to relentlessly critique and even started being more emotionally demanding, expecting me to take responsibility for her inability to cope with her emotions – I was drowning. She was asking too much of me. There was no deliverance from her abuse.
I was exhausted. In the peak of the abuse I endured at her hand, I was working multiple jobs, sleeping 10+ hours a night and napping frequently during the day around meetings and work, then coping with alcohol to numb myself to the abusive dynamic and fall asleep with no support from her. The only time I could approach her sexually was when I was intoxicated, with inhibitions lowered. The only time I could have a conversation with her was with a counselor in the room. Without something to mitigate opportunity for her to be cruel to me, either a mediator or self-medication, I was scared.
I lived at home in a constant state of alert and cognitive fatigue. No matter how I tried to make sense of my home life, I couldn’t. When she looked at or touched me, I would recoil in fear, anticipating some sort of incisive critique or demand expressed. Then she would criticize me for not responding warmly to her, exacerbating the cycle.
I couldn’t meet her needs – I was utterly exhausted. When I would tell her of the exhaustion I experienced in marital counseling, her responses were typically something along the lines of not believing me, denying what I was saying was true, or calling my exhaustion an ‘excuse’. I could interact happily with my friends… why not her?
I did not deny her demands were legitimate; rather, I expressed my inability to meet them because of how fatigued I was. I said ‘I can’t’ so many times. I realize her demands were small; affection, saying ‘i love you’, complimenting her. But it’s disorienting to be consistently berated and belittled by a person and then asked to compliment them and tell them you love them.
The push and pull of abuse is exhausting to a person who is not mentally because it does not make sense.
Further, in counseling I realized that I have forgotten that I have needs. I have lost the tools to even evaluate what my needs might be because, implicitly and explicitly in my marriage, I was told my needs don’t matter.
My marriage made no sense; I was obviously drowning, exhausted with the demands our life imposed on me. I was doing everything I could to get straight. I was in individual therapy, marital counseling, pastoral counseling, trying different antidepressants (4 in total – all with no effect), changing eating habits, trying to reduce my drinking, getting medical tests to see if I had health issues causing my fatigue, and being vulnerable in my friendships in an attempt to invite others in to process and move forward and figure out my marriage. I desperately shared everything I could about my marriage, hoping someone else would crack the code where I couldn’t.
None of my efforts worked. I could not get out of the exhausted state I was in. It’s worth noting here that within weeks of separating I almost completely cut out alcohol, got into a regular sleep schedule, was waking up at 6-7am every day and reading multiple hours (which I couldn’t do in marriage due to cognitive fatigue/distraction), and experienced a resurgence of energy. I have felt the duress I was under lift and lift and lift and the weeks and months have went on.
In retrospect, I was experiencing cognitive fatigue because I was taking the demands my wife was placing on me seriously, but no matter what I did I could not make sense of them. How could she not see that I was doing everything I could to make ends meet – the ends which she was imposing on me? I did not have additional energy left. She would ask me ‘Do you love me?’ and I didn’t know how to respond. How is my work not at least some symbol of love? My dream was to be a poor professor, which she knew – instead I was grinding myself to the bone, working in digital marketing with multiple freelance projects, picking up a bartending gig and a teaching gig on top of full-time employment.
The last straw was when she accused me of abuse. I took that accusation seriously, and weighed it against my experience. ‘Am I an abuser?’ I asked myself. I sorted through my behavior and how I treated her. I came to the conclusion that I may be a poor husband in serious ways; but I am not an abuser. And the abuse question opened the door to the question… ‘I may not be an abuser… but is there abuse in our marriage?’ And the answer quickly became ‘Yes.’
When we were married, I understood that she wasn’t going to work much for a while. However, she worked the bare minimum she could for 4 years, earning at most in a single year $18,000. As the years went on and my income climbed, our debt continued to climb as well. She was still contributing the same, yet spending frivolously on useless knick knacks for our home and a cat. As I packed up our home to sell, the majority of items were dozens of boxes of useless junk she’d accumulated.
She lived a life of mania around finances. We would go to marital counseling and she would regularly express, ‘I would rather be poor and happy than rich and sad’. We were poor and sad. Sure, my income was the highest it’d ever been – but we were still drowning, with debts climbing. At the end of our marriage, we’d accumulated about $20,000 in consumer debt between credit cards and personal loans.
It was traumatizing (and abusive) to go to counseling and be told by my partner she would ‘rather be poor and happy and than rich and sad’ when the factual scenario we were living was neither. She actively denied reality – both my lived experience and the reality of our finances – at my expense. It was killing me, trying to make sense of what we were going through but being unable to make sense of what I was being told and what I was experiencing.
Throughout this time, it is worth adding that she also leveraged my spiritual leadership to ‘set me straight’. I was in a conservative Evangelical space, believing that men are the ultimate provider in a family unit and primarily responsible for the status of the marriage. Because I was not doing what she wanted me to (lavishing her with affection), I was muscled into multiple groups and meetings where pastoral care intervened to restore our marriage. In the moment, I submitted to my pastoral care because of my trust for them and my faith in God. Now, I believe this dynamic was abusive; my pastoral care did not care in any sense for my soul; they only cared about fixing my marriage. No questions around ‘why’ my marriage was so bad were asked; only what was going on and how it could be fixed. I relish the thought of my pastoral care being held accountable for the abuse they exercised upon me during this time on judgment day, albeit through a shaken faith in a God that would enable this dynamic.
With my spiritual community, I shared that I felt like she was my tormentor; that she it felt as if I were on the ground due to exhaustion, and she was standing on my throat, telling me to ‘get up’ and ‘tell me you love me’; that our metaphorical life was a boat, sinking, and I was desperately bailing out water. All the while, she stood at the other end of the boat, desperately bailing water in and looking at me like I was a maniac.
And yet, because there was no adultery, there was no category for divorce. We had sworn an oath before God and were required to fix this.
As I reflect upon my marriage (and the ongoing divorce proceedings), a few things are clear.
She is an abuser. I don’t think she intends to be, but impact matters. She is mentally ill and unable to reckon with basic reality.
She is a manipulator. She manipulated my spiritual community against me. I was viewed as someone to be corrected while begging for help from my trusted friends and pastoral care, whom I now regret being vulnerable with due to their abuse and denial of my reality because I didn’t fit neatly into their thin theological categories.
She is an enslaver. In divorce proceedings, she is doing everything she can to get every dollar from me, leveraging student loans I did not co-sign, my continually increasing income due to my hard work, and denying every claim of dissipated assets she can.
It is truly a mind-breaking experience to see your compassion leveraged against you for money. I had to sit under an attorney proclaiming to a judge that, since I consented to move up our marriage date before her cancer surgery, ‘I knew what I was getting into’. That she is entitled to large sums of money (that do not exist; we never had more than $3000 in our bank account during marriage) due to that decision.
Even apart from the abuse, I did not know what I was getting into. Including the abuse, I am full of remorse for having invited such an evil, hateful person into my life.
This experience has been the most challenging to my faith. As I endured abuse from her, I trusted God in a few ways. That the compassion I showed would maybe be rewarded – or, at least not punished. That my spiritual community wanted what was best for me. That God was not a punitive, hateful God (like my partner). I do not believe this trust was well placed, but am open to shortcomings in my views here.
I struggle to consent to a God that allowed my experience to occur. I’m open and processing in some kind of faith, but I really don’t know what it looks like to find a place to put this pain and betrayal that I’m experiencing.
I am a survivor of abuse, and the abuse I endured was mind-shattering. I sacrificed everything to support a partner diagnosed with serious bodily illness, which drove her to hate me and deny my lived experience because she could not reconcile it with the hatefulness she cultivated over our marriage, choosing bitterness over any positivity for four years, poisoning my well-being in the process.
What I envisioned to be the most compassionate moment of my life — marrying a person with cancer and promising to support and love them — has become nothing but a symbol of pain and remorse. I envisioned a life where my partner and I would fight against the terror of cancer; instead she hopped to the other side, choosing her ongoing health issues as the ally and myself as the enemy.
It took me 4 years to realize it. And as she drags me through court to leverage every dollar out of me I can, my only regret is that I didn’t leave my abuser to her own devices sooner; self-pity, hatefulness, and a sheer disregard toward taking responsibility for anything.
I am grateful but drowning. As we are negotiating settlement, the end is near, and my abuser will soon be unable to execute any influence in my life.

All I feel for my parents now is indifference. All I see in them is financial support.
I'm a 24-year-old man, happy on the face of it, with a good job, a great education and a great girlfriend. I thought everything was going well in my life. However, I realised that this wasn't the case. I had a breakthrough: I no longer feel anything for my parents. No love, no hate, no contempt, just nothing. As the title says, for me they're just a financial help.
I wasn't aware of this until a few months ago (well 6 months ago), but a discussion between friends made me realise it. It took me even longer to realise that I needed to talk about it, and today I've decided to talk about it on reddit, because it's weighing on me, and I don't know what to do.
To put it in context, today I'm with my girlfriend, quite a long way from my parents. I'm the eldest of 3 siblings. My parents divorced when I was 8-10 I think, and at first it was shared custody. As far as I remember, the divorce didn't affect me that much. It was a bit more complicated for the rest of my siblings, but nothing more. We alternated between my father and my mother on a regular basis, and everything was fine on the face of it.
However, my father is a violent person. He regularly lost his temper at the drop of a hat. He wasn't an alcoholic, he wasn't depressed, he was a normal person, but he sometimes lost his temper. And of course, we paid the price. I won't go into the details, but first it was my brother, who was almost sent to hospital, and then after an initial blow of pressure from my mother, he took it out on me. It was very violent. To tell you how angry he got over nothing, my beating was provoked by forgetting my notebook at school. That was it.
But apart from that, he was surprisingly a good father, who looked after us, organised activities... Even though I was still afraid of him. One day, I told him, and he said that was fine, that way I wouldn't do anything stupid.
Anyway, after his outburst against me, my mother took me to lodge a complaint against him. Then, of course, she got custody of the children. And that's when another ordeal began: life with my mother.
You'd think that with her everything would be fine, but it was horrible. I'd be tempted to say that with my mother it was worse, but that's probably because I spent longer with her (about ten years, before I left home).
So now you're probably wondering what it was like: well, she was violent in every way, both physically and psychologically. She's still a woman, so it wasn't as violent as with my father, but it was definitely more humiliating (pulling my hair, kicking me when I was on the floor, throwing herself at me to hit me, threatening me with a knife and saying she was going to kill me...). As with my father, she had violent outbursts (I strongly suspect she's bipolar, but she never wanted to admit it). On top of that, there was a lot of psychological violence, where I was belittled, humiliated, in short, the whole package. The worst was her mood swings, where one minute everything was fine, then the next minute I was being called names. I remember one memorable moment when I wanted to buy a $40 game, and I'd saved up half of it, and Mum told me she'd pay me half. So, all happy, we go to the shop, I get the game, I give her my $20 and she gives me her credit card so I can go and buy it. Only, I don't know what happened, but when I got to the checkout, she started calling me a thief, saying that I was ruining her, that I was a shit, that I was going to get us into trouble, that I was no better than my father, etc. I was so shocked that I couldn't believe it. I was so shocked that I didn't know what to do, and by the time I'd made up my mind, I'd bought the game... the next day was horrible. Or again: I was humiliated because I had put the pasta in the water before it boiled (my mother didn't want to cook, she was ‘lazy’). It may not sound like much, but it was a regular occurrence, mood swings and being insulted for no reason at all. Was she angry about a phone call? We took the blame. She spent all her time taking it out on us.
After a while, it started to take its toll, especially on me. I became unbearable with her. In fact, I was entering adolescence, the age when you start to rebel, and so I rebelled against her. But of course, she made me look like the big bad. One day, she even tried to make me look like a schizophrenic. Especially as, according to those close to her, she was very brave, because she was continuing with the divorce proceedings, continuing to ‘fight’ against our father, who had appealed against the sole custody decision. But she never gave up for several reasons: because she was simply lazy, because it would have been too complicated to abandon all the legal procedures, especially in relation to her family, and because this situation, which made her look like a poor, grieving mother, suited her anyway. In exchange, all she had to do was provide documents and go to the tribunal once a year on average. So, in terms of difficulty... Especially as everyone was supporting her, I was stuck. The only thing I can say in her defence is that she had a long depression, but I think that was mainly due to her poor mental health, which she never wanted to treat. But in my opinion, that in no way excuses her crises.
Fortunately, I was a surprisingly good student, so I never had to worry about getting into a good university. There were a few problems during my time at school, including of course bullying, mainly because my mother was so horrible that I shut myself off, had no friends... So obviously I became an easy target. But being away from all these family problems forced me to educate myself. I asserted myself, and the harassment stopped on its own. I even became friends with my former harassers.
Then the problems with my mother started to stop when I went away to boarding school. Then, after I graduated, I had to leave home to go to university, with a student loan. Even though my mother had other problematic behaviour with me, and with the rest of my siblings, I gradually distanced myself from her. I won't go into the details, but it had a lot to do with financial problems, where she demanded the money from my loan, or the money I was saving... And then recently I got back in touch with my father. It's complicated, because I haven't seen him or anyone else in his family for a long, long time. In fact, one point I haven't touched on is that my mother did everything she could to turn us against our father and his family, by telling us horrible things. It was typical parental alienation. So, on top of not having seen him for a long time, the fact that he beat me up, and his constant bouts of bloodshed (even if it's not physical), I'm finding it very hard to get back into a good relationship with him. Looking back, I know that a lot of the things my mother told me were false, or very exaggerated, but it's still complicated to sort out the truth from the falsehood.
Today, I can no longer call my father ‘Dad’ or my mother ‘Mum’. I find a way to avoid having to say these words. Or I force myself to use them when I need money, for example. I try to maintain a semblance of a relationship, but my parents realise that something's not right, especially my father. But for example, my mother has had serious health problems (several cancers...), and that hasn't affected me that much.
I've been able to take a lot of distance from everything my mother put us through. I realise what she put me through. But it's going to be a long time before I can tell her the 4 truths and move on. With my father, it's a bit easier, because there hasn't been as much damage. I think deep down there's still a bit of love left for them, but it's going to take a while for that to come back.
I hope I've made myself clear. Obviously, I haven't suffered nearly as much as some people, but it's weighing on me and I want to talk about it. I don't really know why I'm doing this, but I'm sure it's an outlet, because I can't really talk to anyone about this situation. I hope this will help a bit. Like it says above, I'm 34. I finally went back to my PCP after a few years of not seeing him, and we had a fairly in-depth discussion about my current needs and so on, and it was then he made the determination that I very likely have ADHD, whiiiiich explains a lot. A lot, a lot.
I can't drive without forcing myself to focus, and even then sometimes it doesn't work. Especially if I listen to music. I forget the stupidest things, go into rooms and forget why, sometimes it's as soon as rounding a corner. I buy food or ingredients and forget them. I've had tempura supplies sitting for a month or so..
Now I'm being told this isn't 'normal', and I've been living with executive dysfunction for a long, long time. I wasn't lazy. I wasn't forgetful. I wasn't unmotivated. I was just dealt a house of cards I'm constantly re-organizing because I forgot about them again. I'm kind of beside myself and not really sure how to handle the information. I guess it just.. never occurred to me that this wasn't 'normal'.
Now, to top it all off, my lovely insurance declined a pre-auth for medication that might FIX this, and did not elaborate why without a physical letter - Hooray. Anyone have experience with CVS Caremark and getting a Pre-Auth denial appealed? If not no worries, I'm sure I'll dissect the letter when it arrives and find a loophole if I need to. I'm good at that. :')

The three phases of the colonized intellectual

Phase 1: Racial and regional culture.

Colonialism asserts that the colonized are barbarians without nations or culture, who need colonialism in order to be saved from themselves. It does not bother with making a special case against the existence of any individual nationalism, but for the sake of efficiency, instead chooses to deny the existence of culture on regional or racial grounds. This also has a reciprocal effect on the colonizing Europeans nations, forming them into an international mass of whiteness.
In an attempt to negate the Europeans' claims, the colonized intellectuals assert an international or interregional culture, such as Pan-Africanism, or Pan-Arabism. The colonized intellectual first finds the qualities that define white culture: dull reason, stifling logic, rigidity, ceremony, protocol, skepticism - qualities of the capitalist colonialist venture and the cold calculation of surplus value. Within these limits, the intellectual then defines the regional culture by finding the opposite of those qualities: poetry, exuberant nature, naivete, petulance, freedom, luxuriance - portraying the colonized as irresponsible. Although it emphasizes international solidarity against colonialism, the simple negation of racial capitalist culture does not culminate in an overall antagonistic contradiction to colonialism. The intellectual who forwards it desires most of all to be seen as equals to the Europeans. They attempt to combat the colonizer on their own terms, resorting to racialized claims to match the concept of whiteness and the vision of a universal Europe. Equal footing in this case then could only mean that the colonized intellectuals meet the European intellectuals as the exploited to their exploiter.
However, soon objective problems undo this attempt at regional culture. The intellectual finds that the fight against colonialism differs in progression amongst the nations of the region. They abandon their asserted regional/racial culture once these objective problems make it clear that the decisive unit of struggle against colonialism is the nation, not the region or race. As culture is a reflection of struggle, it too differs amongst the nations, revealing that culture is first and foremost national. To be connected to reality, productive, and substantive, culture must be a national culture, not a pseudo-continental culture. The problem with the racialized cultures, is that they are a negation without transcendence of the colonialist's whiteness, whereas national culture is the progressive negation of the colonialist claims of barbarity. In order to really find a regional culture and cultural unity of a region, first there must be national liberation for all nations in that region. Specifically national problems expose racial universalization as immaterial, returning the intellectual back to the nation.

Phase 2: Stuck between the colonizer and the masses.

Phase 2A: Persuading the colonizer with defensive shallow national culture.

As the intellectual returns to the nation, their approach to the national culture has been altered. In the period preceding colonialism, the intellectual has a dynamic attitude towards the people’s culture, but after colonialism, this is replaced by a static attitude full of concrete particularism. The intellectual claims that national culture is the folklore of 'the people', turning it into simple self-discovery and at attempt at defining an abstract people through historical appeals. National culture becomes defined by narrow terms and limits, a rigid structure. Particulars of the nation are elevated to mystical proportions to signify the nation's historical roots. The intellectual brings forth cultural items in a mechanical way, finding the most surface level cultural items to display the existence of a national culture. It is loud, it is bold, and it is cliche.
This aesthetic of particularism is a defense mechanism to preserve what remains of the old culture and life before colonialism. It is also an attempt to assert the nation to the colonizer. The intellectual hopes they can stop the colonial occupation by putting the shallow culture under the occupier's nose. But to do this, they must necessarily make the culture comprehensible to the occupier, translating the culture into a language they will understand. This locks the intellectual into the style and aesthetic of the colonialist, dooming the culture to shallowness, and especially making it alien to the national masses.
The national masses have their own relationship to the national customs. Following conquest, they continue to practice the customs of pre-conquest culture. They do this as a means of asserting their nationhood, in the only way they know how. In doing so, they prove by themselves that their nation does exist, despite the colonizers' claims to the contrary. This demonstration of nationhood upsets the racial (nation denial) justification of colonialism and is subsequently prohibited by the colonizers. When, in spite of prohibition, the masses go on practicing the customs, the colonizer responds with repression, calling forth a correspondingly violent reaction by the colonized. Such violence unites and emboldens the national masses, furthering their claim to nationhood.
But this practice and defense of customs is not in itself a struggle for national liberation. Rather, the violence is too only a defensive reaction to prevent losing what little remains of material life before domination. Customs are built by, and reflect the needs of, struggles that existed before the fight for national liberation. In their practice, the masses parade out something that is dead and try to pretend it is alive. Culture, on the other hand, reflects the living, always adapting needs of the present. Culture becomes solidified into custom through changes in the economic structure. Thus, asserting that customs are the primary symbol of the nation deteriorates the culture, making it lifeless, highlighting the past while ignoring the issues of the present. However, there is a positive side to the masses continual practice of customs under colonialism. By experiencing the masses’ demonstration of nationhood, the intellectual sees that the nation is being created through the masses' struggle against colonialism.

Phase 2B: Moving towards the masses, recreating their struggle.

The intellectual starts to identify with the masses through their movements and their development of national consciousness, moving the primacy of the contradiction within themselves towards the masses. The longer any open battle and combat for national liberation persists, more intellectuals will be moved from phase 2A, through 2B. The national masses' staying power, their ability to persist in their struggle despite repression, setbacks, and any other attempts to stop their struggle, impresses the intellectual and impels them to stop whatever else they were doing.
The intellectual begins to openly criticize colonialism, rather than attempting to persuade it. When the intellectual first attempts to prove the existence of the nation, they, in a kind of clumsy way, raise above all else the particulars of custom. But now, the masses have displayed their fresh vibrant quality of creation in the struggle. By counterposing this quality of the masses to the qualities of the colonial administrator, the opposition between the colonialist and the intellectual are brought to an antagonistic contradiction, progressing past the racial and regional culture of phase 1.
The intellectual’s work now changes forms, from poetry to novels, short stories or essays. The work becomes more direct. The abstract indirectness of poetry fades away as the intellectual becomes involved in the masses' struggle. The content of the work changes as well. Gone are the intellectual’s emotional cathartic outbursts towards the colonizer, which were always acceptable to the colonizer anyway. As long as violence is left to the domain of art, and doesn’t make its way to the masses, these outbursts will always be applauded.
But now the audience is shifted. In phase 2A, the audience is still the colonizer, while in phase 2B the masses become the audience. The intellectual now insists on describing the sacrifices of the national masses. They attempt to capture the masses in their moment of national creation. The intellectual analyzes and describes the moment of revolt with unnerving precision, creating a careful rendition of truth. But Fanon asks if this version of truth is real, or if it is outmoded, irrelevant, called into question by the actual reality being created by the masses.
Despite their rationality and commitment, the intellectual still fails to live up to the rationality and irreversible commitment displayed by the masses actually in motion. The intellectual is not capable of showing the reality of the nation this way, because culture is the continual never-ending struggle of the nation. As soon as the artist sets down to catalog the moment, it has passed. The intellectual that attempts to create culture and a work of national significance by simple replication of motion is chasing a dead end.
The intellectual who is intent on describing the national culture must make a full break with their colonial side. The intellectual is still caught in a contradiction that makes the creation of culture impossible. They must decisively define the masses as their subject. This objective choice must first begin within the intellectual, through recognizing their division between their colonialist education, and the colonized nation. Fanon calls this the intellectual’s alienation. This alienation is a result of what the intellectual has taken from colonialism. The transaction has been one-sided; the colonizer did not actually give what the intellectual took. Everything ‘given’ has been in the interest of colonialism, making the intellectual the one who was really taken. In an attempt to reverse what they gave, the intellectual proclaims against the colonizer, proclaims for the nation, proclaims against being divided, attempts to reunite with the nation through old dead customs. But to really reverse what was taken, the intellectual must give instead to the masses. The intellectual must reunite with the masses and the living culture of the present struggle. This will suddenly call the alienation into question.
The intellectual of 2B begins with simply highlighting the contradictions between the nation and the colonizer. But culture is authentic when it reflects the reality of the nation, and the reality and culture of the colonized nation is not just its life under domination, but actually its liberation. The culture describes where the nation is going, not just where it is at or where it has been, calling upon the whole people to join in the struggle for the existence of the nation. They must move to rousing the masses to liberation.

Phase 3: Revolutionary national culture

The intellectual transitions into their role of delivering marching orders for the liberation struggle, becomes more direct and calculated. It is only by calling the national masses to combat that the intellectual can assist in proving the existence of the nation. All other attempts at proving the nation's existence are for the colonizer only. The present colonial situation is no longer a matter simply for the intellectual, for their personal anguish, which they only communicate to the oppressor, but instead is channeled out to the national masses in every direction. The intellectual is called to the masses in their struggle for national liberation, but just the same, the intellectual calls the masses to rise for national liberation. Fanon’s word choices: rouse, galvanize, combat, signal that this is not a portrayal for artistic sake but for the purpose of revolution.
Only the intellectuals who are rousing the masses for the current national struggle at hand, speaking directly to the masses, are creating works of national culture. In all other roles, they fall short. Until they reach this point, the culture of the nation does not exist for the intellectual. They cannot create national culture, nor proclaim the nation by extension, until they rouse the people to combat. Then the intellectual can finally create, and finally becomes creative. To fight for national culture means fighting for the liberation of the nation. The intellectual who wants to fight for culture, must take part in the action by spurring the people into further action, fostering hope and using the past to open up the future.
Phase 3 creation does not 'trifle with the reality' of the nation, a characteristic of phase 2 creation, but rather reinterprets the images of the country for revolutionary purposes. It also finds the exact moment of the struggle, place of action, and ideas around which culture will form. The word 'will' is the main difference between phase 2 and 3. Phase 2B describes where the moment of struggle took place, rather than where it will take place. Phase 2B tells us about the struggle after it has passed, while phase 3 leads and amplifies the wave of the struggle.
Phase 3 literature is pedagogical. It presents things in a clear manner, and its account is meticulous and develops progressively. The most esteemed praise Fanon places upon the intellectual is to say that, through understanding their creation of national culture, the masses have performed an intellectual and political act:

To understand this poem is to understand the role we have to play, to identify our approach and prepare to fight.

This is the outline to any combat. The colonized national masses understand their position within the chain of command, the battle plan, and are ready to deploy at any moment. Fanon says that all colonized subjects will perform these acts when they receive the message of the national culture.
The intellectual and the masses' real movement against the colonial world is the determining factor for the culture. National liberation defines the national culture in explicit terms, determining the shape the intellectual’s work takes. Customs in all art forms will be upset during the revolutionary upsurge, updated to be relevant to the current struggle. The rough skeletons of customs are kept while the content and form are changed, transforming customs into living dynamic culture. New amateurs join in the creation of national culture, pushing old intellectuals to adapt to the new forms. Comedy and farce as artistic forms become less important, and drama is no longer simply for the intellectual only, but becomes part of the national masses regular experience, part of the struggle. Characters are portrayed in action or in combat, or instead of depicting single subjects, multiple people.
The degree to which the new culture reflects the old customs, is only determined by the capacity for the old customs to be appropriated to the new ends of advancing the national struggle. In practice, appeals to custom are not excluded by a set of rules, but rather the awakening to the real national culture, which is always in the moment changing, naturally excludes custom by definition. Custom is stagnant and in contradiction to the radical reality grasping required by revolution. National culture deteriorates and erodes all customs obsolete to the present. Involving or carrying through the customs is not the critical part of the formation of the new national culture, but rather the nation adapting and struggling against their colonialist, neocolonialist, or imperialist reality, creating national culture along the way. The intellectual’s appropriation of the nation's history is progressive only in the context that it is used for national liberation.

Summary

We began with the intellectuals' attempt to negate the European colonialists' claim that the colonized have no culture. And this attempt has gone through three phases, where only the final phase has not been a dead end. In the first phase, the intellectual is insignificant to the national masses. This is a historically transient phase, upset by national realities. In the second phase, the artist is producing for the nation and for the colonizer. It is probably the most prevalent and common phase, and the one most commodified. In the third phase, the intellectual is a revolutionary, intertwined with the masses and the creation of culture.

We are struggling with money right now as a result of too many setbacks. My mom and dad worked hard for this house, however, my dad wanted to move after my mom died 10 years ago. My grandma from mom's side did not want us to move, so my father did not sell our house before.
I'm not really sure, maybe out of respect as people were still grieving.
However, now my dad said he wants to move out and sell this house because staying in here feels "too heavy". Along with financial struggles and other factors, it seems like staying in here long-term does not serve us anymore.

Doing this feels like I'm betraying my mom. It feels so strange, I am relapsing and I'm in so much pain right now. But we need to pay my dad's debts and my student loans and expenses (I'm still in college), the commute from my dad's job is exhausting too, the location of our house is not really ideal. It seems like this is the most practical thing to do instead of staying here and incurring more debts. Yet I feel like once I get out of here, I will finally lose my last piece of her. Be gentle with them and make supplication for them (17:24)

Lash those who accuse chaste women with insufficient witnesses with 80 lashes, and never accept them as a witness (24:4)
If you, as a visitor, are asked to leave, then leave (24:28)
If you are a man, lower your gaze (24:30)
As a woman, you should also lower the gaze, you must additionally not reveal adornment except what I’d apparent, and you should cover the bosom [except to listed people] (24:31)

“Let them eat cake,” Marie Antoinette once famously said, disdaining the immiseration of peasants in pre-revolutionary France. Joe Biden didn’t use those exact words last week during his interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett, but his tone-deafness about the suffering of millions of Americans grappling with high food and gas prices and unaffordable rents was palpable.
Burnett did her best to allow Biden the opportunity to address voters with a measure of simple empathy – but Old Joe was having none of it. When Burnett gently suggested that Americans weren’t feeling the vaunted “recovery” the White House keeps touting, Biden all but insisted that Americans were simply wrong – and needed to buck up.
It was an embarrassing performance, and coming on the heels of Donald Trump’s remarkable mass rally in Jersey City in the midst of his trial in the Stormy Daniels case, it suggests that the White House is sinking deeper into denial about its prospects for losing – and losing big – in November.
Despite weeks of campaigning and TV ad buys in the key swing states – outspending Trump by a whopping 13-1, while the former president is largely sidelined – Biden hasn’t moved the needle in the polls. In fact, he appears to be losing ground. The latest NY Times/Siena poll has Trump up by a whopping 13 points in Nevada, 9 in Georgia, and 6 in Arizona, three states Biden carried in 2020. In Pennsylvania, where Biden recently barnstormed, Trump went from slightly behind to ahead by 3. Trump also inched up in Wisconsin, a state that many consider the pre-eminent 2024 bellwether.
Only in Michigan, where Biden clings to a 1 point lead, is there a fresh sliver of hope, and that could soon fade as the prospects for peace in Gaza slip further and further away.
Burnett’s willingness to challenge Biden on his administration’s economic performance is just one of the many signs that the mainstream media is unlikely to continue fronting for an administration that keeps gas-lighting voters with misleading data on jobs and GDP growth while a growing number of metrics point to the country’s continuing descent into full-blown stagflation.
By almost every indicator – from sagging consumer confidence and rising home prices to declining real wages and mass layoffs at major firms – Americans do not feel better off than they were during the heyday of the Trump administration – before COVID-19 and the mandated government shutdown all but destroyed the burgeoning economy, resulting in jobless numbers not seen since the Great Depression.
A large number of those jobs – maybe three-quarters – have since returned, but those are hardly jobs that Biden “created” from scratch. Americans, still traumatized by the COVID experience, are grateful for a return to a semblance of “normalcy.” But they hardly credit Biden for putting America back on a solid footing. Unemployment at 3.9%? Perhaps, but many Americans are working two jobs that still don’t pay enough to feed their families, while a record number of those without jobs are homeless – with an increase of 12% between 2022 and 2023 alone.
America, of course, has never been just one country economically, current trends mask the continuing divide. Some, in fact, were protected during COVID and large corporations reaped billions. And though funded through deepening consumer debt, the fortunes of some are now improving. But what many analysts don’t recognize is that a disproportionate share of the nouveau riche and comfortably salaried professionals, especially in government and health care, are now Democrats, not Republicans. The party may still be the “party of the working class” when it comes to the labor aristocracy in the trade unions – but those workers represent less than 10% of the total workforce. Many blue-collar workers – even a goodly share (close to half) of those in unions like the UAW – have drifted to the Trump camp, while the greater mass of non-union workers are voting GOP, and indeed, have done so for years. These voters generally don’t eat cake – not the fancy stuff, at least.
And their ranks now include a growing number of Hispanics and African Americans, especially men, who find Trump’s angry macho posturing appealing, or least comforting. “Polls are just polls,” Democrats keep saying, but we haven’t seen numbers like this since…..well ever. Trump could end up with well over 20% of the Black vote, besting the historic percentages reached by the Nixon-Ford regimes in the 1970s. And amazingly, if current trends hold, he might well take close to 50% of the Hispanic vote –besting George W. Bush’s former record of 41% in 2004, and completely reversing the more recent 2-1 – and even 3-1 – Democratic voting trend. Hispanics interviewed in Larino-rich swing states like Arizona and Nevada tell reporters a simple truth: they can’t afford the rising price of beans and tortillas, their family staple.
Something is happening to the U.S. electorate that goes far beyond Joe Biden. The old “Obama coalition” – the one that analysts John Judis and Ruy Texeira famously predicted – or, at least hoped – would become a “permanent” Democratic majority – is falling apart. It’s not just the large-scale defection of workers of colors, but of youth. Amazingly, Trump, in most polls, is now leading or tied with Biden among 18-29 year old voters, completely reversing the president’s former advantage. And while Biden leads strongly among women, some polls have the gap surprisingly narrow, while Trump’s lead among men remains wide. While the GOP is not about to become the “populist multicultural working-class coalition” that Republicans like Marco Rubio still fantasize about, Democrats are in danger of losing their once broad demographic support, giving Trump and GOP a fresh opening not just in 2024 – but well beyond.
The good news? Signs of a serious freak-out — and even a potential meltdown – about Biden’s prospects in November – once dismissed as mere “bed-wetting” – are finally appearing among party pooh-bahs. Witness the remarkable drunken rant of former Clinton strategist James Carville posted on Twitter last week. Never one to mince words, an angry and exasperated Carville bemoaned the continuing slide of Biden in the polls and confessed that “nothing is working” to convince disaffected Democratic voters to return to the fold. “You can prepare and you can be on TV, you can write pieces, you can have a YouTube channel, you can have a podcast…and it doesn’t matter. Everything we’re throwing is spaghetti at a wall, and none of it is sticking, me included,” he fumed.
Another staunch Biden supporter, CNN’s Farid Zakaria, also took to the airwaves to issue his own stern warning about Biden’s rapidly diminishing prospects. In a blistering six minute review, he listed one area after another where Trump’s political resurrection and standing with voters is exceeding expectations, noting that a landslide win – including a popular vote victory – by Trump in November was looming. Zakaria even broke with the party line on Trump’s presumed “criminality.” suggesting that the four legal trials aimed at discrediting the former president were largely motivated by simple politics, not a concern for justice. “I doubt a criminal indictment in New York would have been brought against a defendant whose name wasn’t Donald Trump,” he deadpanned.
Could all this dire hand-wringing lead to another public call for Biden to step down? That seems highly unlikely for now. Top White House apologists like Simon Rosneberg and Jim Messina continue to insist that Biden is simply suffering from the usual presidential first-term blues – disaffection at the base combined with pre-general election apathy among all voters. Sustained outreach coupled with a persistent hammering of the challenger can turn things around, they say. Once voters realize what the real stakes are – democracy, abortion rights, climate change – and the threat posed by Trump, they’ll surely pull a lever for Biden, even if it’s not with great enthusiasm.
It sounds logical – but the accumulating evidence strongly suggests otherwise. Most voters do question Trump’s commitment to upholding democracy, but nearly as many now question Biden’s. And by a wide margin, they also rate Trump as a stronger and more effective leader. Trump enjoys a 10 to 20-point edge over Biden on the handling of the economy overall, inflation, immigration, crime and foreign and defense policy which are also deemed by voters to be the nation’s top issues. Dismissing this perception – and support for Trump generally – as a form of irrational “nostalgia”– as pro-Biden pundits continue to do, is self-defeating. 2024 wasn’t destined to become a classic “change” election – not with a current incumbent battling a former scandal-ridden one – but that’s what it’s becoming. By all appearances, 2024 is now Donald Trump’s to lose.
Of course, there’s still six months left before the election – and “anything can happen.” But anything includes a further deterioration of Biden’s position. One election-year wild card Democrats clearly didn’t count on was Gaza, which has only compounded voter concerns about Biden’s weakness on the world stage. The chimera of a pending peace may have helped Biden in the polls in Michigan recently – the one battleground where he’s gained ground just slightly – but it’s unlikely to last. Despite mounting pressure from the White House– or perhaps because of it – Netanyahu is digging in his heels and will likely stall in any deal until November, hoping that Trump wins and gives Israel a freer hand to prosecute the war as it sees fit. By trying to have it both ways – castigating Netanyahu publicly, while sending massive new amounts of military aid, Biden has managed to alienate Arab-Americans and Jews both, while leaving many undecided voters both aghast at the carnage and dismayed by Biden’s obvious pandering to both sides.
“Genocide Joe” and the Democrats could well face a decline in support thirty highly competitive congressional districts where the Arab-American vote (though relatively small nationally) is large enough to make a difference, and not just in Michigan. But a loss of support among the much larger and traditionally Democrat-leaning Jewish population – concentrated heavily in the four main “Blue” states, California, Florida, New York and New Jersey – could also weigh heavily on key House and Senate races. And if Trump is right – God forbid – it could even help put New Jersey – where Biden won by 16 points in 2020 – in play for the first time in years.
“We need to do something completely different,” Carville moaned at the conclusion of his recent Twitter rant, before wandering, Biden-like, off camera. But from all appearances, the Democrats, right now, have no Plan B. Not in Gaza or anywhere else.
Biden’s apologists insist on comparing his re-election prospects to Obama’s in 2012, when a once-popular incumbent began sinking in the polls, and for six months prior to the election, seemed headed to defeat, only to pull out of his tailspin, thanks to Bill Clinton and Hurricane Sandy. But the more obvious if daunting parallel might be Jimmy Carter’s predicament 30 years earlier. In 1980, Carter was saddled with domestic discontent over inflation, a general feeling of pessimism and malaise, and a series of intractable foreign policy challenges, including a never-ending hostage crisis. I'm Indian, and we're pretty rare in Libertarian corners online. But it is interesting why Libertarianism never really become mainstream, or even a part of the political discourse here. I have seen some pretty insane justifications for it but I think most of them are incorrect (culture or subordinate nature).
The real thing is more historical and societal rather than cultural. I'll try to explain these things below.
I split this in 3 parts.

Early years (1950s)

This part is known as "license raj", it is one of the most strictly managed economies and it was pretty insane in terms of how long it lasted and how much damage it did. It is just a term used for a system of government that adhered to strict rules, regulations and control over the Indian economy. Under this system, businesses in the country required licences to operate.
Licenses were not easy to get bdw, no one can get it easily. You need approval from upto 80 government agencies to get licences to produce some products. Also the government would decide what, where and how it would be produced.
Governments did not allow things like layoffs and factories closing. This overreaching of powers by the government was so bad and India during these times witnessed mass sterilization from the government (lot of whom were botched), slow growth and even nationalizing of several banks in the 60s.
Foreign investments were also strictly monitored and restricted, free trade was not a possibility. This is a part of the belief of the leaders of those times that you'd need to rely on internal markets for development, not international trade. To achieve this goal, the Indian government erected strict import restrictions and a system of tariffs which was different for each industry.
The early leaders were Socialists (or were inspired by them) and wanted a strong, planned, central economy like the USSR had (our first prime minister (president equivalent) visited the USSR in 1927). This influenced a lot of the early years (or decades) and hence the shitshow you see.
India was essentially run by the congress party in this era and they won most of the elections, although towards the end opposition did increase but they were the dominant political force during these times. (More on this later). Oh, fun fact: Socialist was added to the constitution in 1976.

Economic liberalisation (1990s)

Now to sum it up, a massive debt crisis and economy being shite (and a political crisis) causes the leaders of these times Manmohan Singh and PV Narsimha Rao to liberalise the economy. Essentially open up to the outside world. In short, Government control was reduced, Import restrictions were lifted, however the state did play a prominent part it was reduced greatly.
To avoid getting too caught up in details, India changed the economic model and enacted several reforms. Essentially doing this to save the economy and get some growth in. This formally marks the end of the License raj which was a term coined by a prominent Indian libertarian C Rajagopalachari.
This marked years of growth, emergence of the stock market, the IT boom, emergence of middle classes and generally fairly positive things for the general population.

Aftermath and Conclusion

So now you might wonder why Libertarianism or even those ideas are not even in the mainstream of Indian Political discourse. No parties (prominent ones or even the small ones) support the ideas or have a libertarian platform, socialist and communist parties are very successful but there's little to no space for libertarians (apart from a few urban folks there's none and I bet they are outnumbered by socialists 10:1 even at our best).
If you ask me there are a few reasons:

• Ideology shared by the founding leaders and politicians:

It is not a surprise that the initial leaders of the nation ( Gandhi or Nehru) were not too keen on our ideals. These leaders have a large following, i.e. a section of the population absolutely adores them and largely supports their actions and shares their views. This is a large section of the population and ideas like free trade or lax regulation don't resonate with them. INC (Indian National Congress), is the dominant party from the 1960s and they generally share these same views (although not entirely).

• Small government doesn't have an appeal:

For example Farmers get loan waivers regularly since it is an easy way to get votes, and since only 1-2% of Indians actually pay income taxes (which are pretty insane bdw) they don't really have a large enough say to oppose and influence the wasteful spending happening. The government often guarantees work to laborers, has price caps and obstructs free trade with regulations in manufacturing and agriculture (albeit not like the OG days). Add the fact that government jobs have a strange appeal to a large section of the populace. Yeah.. "fuck the state" doesn't have the same appeal here, especially when a ton of people love the opposite for their personal goals or they just agree with the state's role in the economy to keep things "safe" and "comfortable".

• Political parties:

Indian politics is a shitshow, I will try and explain it here. Essentially no one cares about personal liberties or personal freedoms. INC (centre-left) never cared about it and has repeatedly trampled over personal liberty and rights of Indian citizens (with little opposition in some cases).
Now surely the opposition to it is better, right?. WRONG, now there is a big national party, the BJP (religious right wing nationalists) they don't give a shit about personal liberty or rights either, although they pretend to but yeah they are Crony capitalism loving freaks who have engaged in blatant regional favouritism , religious hate and government overreach multiple times (internet shutdowns are an example) and in general trying to subvert Indian democracy but don't be fooled every other party will do it without shame as well.
Well you might say " u/breadfruitboth165 what about the other parties?" ok, so the other big parties are: TMC (regional party in eastern India) unironically led by a female dictator who arrests people for making memes about her and engaged in harassing and covering up systemic s*xual assault.
Then there is AAP (centre- centre right from Northern India) it is a populist party with general emphasis on social welfare and free things (literally free electricity, free water and other things like that lol). They're small and losing support as well.
There is the Communist party, I don't need to say anything here. But there is the BSP and SP (both are different and caste based parties big in Northern India) they do not care about anything but their own communities and are pretty shady.
So there is no real political voice for people who want more personal rights, less red tape but these people do exist, albeit it is a tiny tiny minority, which is due to some of the factors I mention, most of them are societal and political.
Indian libertarian parties did exist (they were small) but they were wiped off in 1971 and haven't made a revival since, I don't think they will and the population does not care about it sadly. There are no real politicians who support libertarian ideas some thinkers to exist but they are not in the mainstream and not that relevant either.

For context. I have a chronic health condition that impacts Mobility and energy levels. I have medicaid.
My doctor prescribed a wheelchair for Me and I was fitted by an ATP and an OT. Insurance denied the chair and we have to file an appeal. Since the denial my condition has worsened significantly. Major visible changes. I went from being able to walk a little to now not at all. My doctor is aware of the changes and so are the people involved in ordering the chair. I had to contact the ATP for a loaner and now have a loaner. I want to make sure the appeal gets approved this time. They prescribed me an aero z with a smart drive (due to fatigue and a partially paralyzed arm) but insurance said they denied the chair because they don’t see that a power assist was trialed or discussed. I actually did test drive it in front of atp and ot and they do have notes on it. Just wondering if anyone has any advice on what I can do to make sure things get approved especially since things have worsened since the initial evaluation and the need is more crucial? Also I am wondering how long the appeal process will take?

Good evening. I'm looking to get a second credit card to supplement my AMEX BCP that I will be downgrading to a BCE before the AF kicks in (I don't spend much in groceries as I work in hospitality). I currently have a savings and checking account with PNC Bank. I'm not impressed with the cards. The Cash rewards card seems okay, as my biggest single category would be gas (4%) but doesn't have an intro APR. I would like an intro APR *Just in case* I need to make a big or emergency purchase. Haven't carried a balance before. I'm just concerned with doing hard inquires with the short history, and know PNC is fickle with approvals, but I'm not sure how they treat you with having a relationship. not much info out there about PNC rules. I just want to get the hell out of the Secured card. I only have 9mos history. I would be okay with it, if you think I would be approved with 9mos history, since I still have plenty months of intro rate with Amex. Have a good relationship with PNC at a year with $6k in savings, but will be moving that to a hysa soon. I also have a remaining balance of $10k on a car loan that I'm 6mos. ahead on. I'd like to get a second card before I close the secured cc account for the AAoA, because 2 cards will be fine for me for about a year. I like the citi custom, and I just hear a lot about the CFU.
