2024.05.19 04:20 Engelgrafik Does anybody remember in the mid '80s the story about dogs ritualistically killed in the woods?

Just curious. Pretty sure this happened in '86 or '87.
The story told by an acquaintance of mine at the time to a few of us goes like this:
Someone or a group of people found a bunch of dogs skinned and burned around a fire pit. They took pictures or notified the cops. They investigated and found the dogs and had them removed, and then some time later people discovered more dead dogs out there. That time, they left the dogs there, assuming that whoever did it the first time didn't like that they had them removed. ie. they didn't want more dogs killed.
That's the story anyway.
So my family and I moved away in '87 and I pretty much lost touch with just about everybody I know who heard that story.
Fast forward to a few years ago I'm on a Midland group on Facebook and people are referring to a part of Midland called "Dead Dog Swamp" or "Dead Dog Road" or something like that, can't remember exactly. I asked what that referred to and they said sure enough there's a "rumor" that someone killed a bunch of dogs out those woods. However, what they described seemed like north Midland. Like near the soccer fields I think. Which doesn't make sense since it's not like you can hide much up there.
And like I said, I always thought this happened west of town where there are a lot of woods... But then I started putting 2 and 2 together. Mind you, in '86/'87 there was no Mall or anything up there. I remember visiting Midland around '95 or '96 when my Dad was living there and so I remember there being that "new mall". But going back to '86 or '87... there was almost *nothing* up there. It was all fields and woods (I think some farms, the soccer fields, etc.).
We all lived in the north part of Midland, so that "area" seems like it could make sense. I mean, yeah, Midland is small, but still it's interesting that this area is just north of where we lived.
And then there's this: I remembered another friend of mine confronting some dudes in a metal band he was certain stole his dog, and they would wear canine teeth in a necklace. I always assumed they were fake... but then we started wondering.... Everybody felt they were going around stealing people's dogs. I know for a fact this was all happening around the same time because we only lived in that area of Midland for about a year and then we moved out of State. In other words, all these old friends of mine, all these events, all of it happened in '86 or the first half of '87 because before those years I didn't know any of those friends and didn't live in that part of town.
ANYWAY....
I guess I'm just curious if anybody ever did any investigation into this. I can't find anything online.
PS: I apologize if this is a well-known and well-worn-out story for Midlanders and I'm coming in her all naive and assuming it's an old legend or something. But I really would like to know if the story has been documented in some way.

2024.05.19 03:19 bdwells88 Place to play soccer?

We recently moved to Waverly/Prairie Village area. My son plays soccer but our yard is a steep hill. He has kicked a ball around Waverly and Riverview Park but I’m wondering if there’s a public soccer field or even just a decent field nearby that he could play in to practice. Any recommendations? Blessed be.

2024.05.19 02:58 newbdbdbsnsko How can I stimulate a border collie as much as possible in a city environment?

I live in an apartment in Michigan, and am truly in love with the breed. I understand that border collies are working dogs and are happiest on farms and when they have a job, but I think it’s rather unfair to need a farm to have such an intelligent and beautiful partner. It’s a small complex with a big field to run around in, as well as multiple soccebaseball fields surrounding it as there are multiple schools in the area. I live in a nice walkable neighborhood, and want nothing more than have a walking/hiking companion. I’m willing to invest the time, but am worried about mental stimulation. I had a australian cattle dog in the past that was found on the street, but that was when I was younger. She tore up the apartment, and we ended up giving her to a farmer. Any ideas on what I could do with a border collie in such a setting to properly have them feeling worn out at the end of the day?
If I determine it would be too much, then im certainly willing to wait for when my situation changes. I do not wish to subject another dog to what my last dog had to go through, due to my uneducation on the breed at the time.

2024.05.19 00:54 Character_Whole_8945 We're building a brand new sport from scratch!

Hello and welcome to the club! Airtoboal is a brand new sport that we are all attempting to play, watch, and ultimately launch to the wider world as fun, unique, competitive and spectator sport that can be played by all ages and athletic abilities from liesure fun to professional competition. This group is here to help people learn and spread the sport through discussing it, having fun with it and seeing and improving it together as we go. Let's build this from nothing into what we want it to be!
In short it is a team sport a game of constant movement and continuous motion that involves getting a ball about 5-7 inches in diameter (so it can be gripped by hand) into a litteral bowl, and the bowl is smooth and round enough to be kicked around the field like a soccer ball. The ball must stay in the air (except in rare circumstances), and it is a turnover if a player gets tagged while with the ball or in most cases if the ball hits the ground. The bowl must stay on the ground. It involves some similarities of well known sports, this is how I would compare it:
⚽️Soccer with a bowl, 🏀basketball a little lower, 🏒hockey on grass, 🏐volleyball on a full field, 🏃🏿‍♂️track with a ball, 🏉rugby with more variety 🥍lacrosse without sticks and with more pace, 🥣tag with props, 🏈football except more action and less danger, ♟️chess, checkers, monoply, and risk board game in sport form.
Note: It is not just a combination of all those games, it has similarities to all those well known games. It is it's own unique sport though!
There will be much more explanation about the sport as time goes on here, this is your one stop shop for all of it! That was just the quick overview. We want everyone to understand it clearly and entirely, this is just the very beginning of huge future goals!
So thanks for joining, please ask all the questions you want and need to and get in on the Airtoboal games!

2024.05.18 22:09 dlins renting/reserving artificial turf field for soccer practice

I recently joined an Urban Rec soccer team, and we desperately need some practice lol. so as the new guy, I’ve decided to take some initiative and try to book something in.
dirt fields with netless goalposts are easy enough to find around the city, but reserving a proper turf field with nets seems tough for a casual team.
I’m hoping someone here has done this before and might be willing to provide some guidance!
The CoV online reservation system appears simple enough at first, but actually requires a non-profit/society number and proof of insurance, neither of which seem straightforward to acquire?
I also imagine there must be private rental fields somewhere in the Greater Vancouver area, though I haven’t found a single one so far.
Any advice on this would be super appreciated! Our relegation fight depends on it…

2024.05.18 19:33 Longjumping_Might893 Today is the day I quit gambling forever. May 18, 2024! 🎰💰

I’m a 24 y/o male and I’ve been sports gambling for about 3 years now. I was introduced to gambling by one of my good friends in the summer of 2021 during the UEFA Euro 2021 tournament. Up until that point, I’ve never placed a bet in my life before so I didn’t feel like I could ever become addicted to something I knew what statistically stacked against me and just blatantly stupid. Boy was I wrong!
I created my online betting account and I won my first bet I ever placed which was a $100 bet and it was for England or Spain to win a game (I forgot exactly which one). I remember watching the game and having a new found excitement that I’ve never had before watching my team score and win the game, knowing that I’m benefitting from their success as well! I thought wow, this is a piece of cake; I was at the comfort of my own home and I just made a few dollars watching a game, having the time of my life with my friend on a phone call celebrating with me.
I ended up gambling that whole summer with little to no knowledge about sports betting, and only picking favourites and who I wanted to win. By August, I turned my initial $100 deposit into around $4600! I didn’t know it at the time but as the number grew, my appetite for bets was increasing and my dopamine reward system was becoming less excited by $100 bets.
Me and my friend decided to put the whole $4600 on a x1.50 odds play to win $6900. The play was placed towards the end of a random in-play soccer match that was currently scored 2-1 and it was for under 5.5 goals. The betting site also offered a stream to watch the match which I thought was pretty cool. Our logic for the big play was, we watched soccer the whole summer, teams don’t usually score much at the end of a match, this is FREE MONEY!
During the 84th minute of that match, the team that was up 2-1 scored again making the match 3-1. Me and my friend didn’t really care much at that point but we noticed that the sportsbook took away the cashout button completely now. Come the 89th minute, the team up 3-1, scores another goal making the match 4-1 which is one goal under 5.5. I thought okay now the games decided and no one will have the passion to keep playing.
The extra time finally showed there was only 2 extra minutes awarded during the match, and the time read 93:40, and the ball was at the losing team with 1 goals side, I remember at this moment the announcer of this game saying “surely they’re gonna call the game now, it’s well beyond the extra time!” And at that moment, a player on the team up 4-1 hits the ball to a wide open player at the half field mark, and this player takes off running towards his own net, at this point it’s 1v1 vs the keeper and he missed! But the ball ricocheted off the goal post and another player scored the ball 🤣
I’ve been gambling ever since and lost around $30k. And was my friend the reason for my gambling addiction ?
And kids, PLEASE don’t gamble.

2024.05.18 17:31 BurningUpMyLife Better to leave at home for 4+ hours or watch me from the sidelines

I'm in a bit of a pickle,, I play soccer and referee and the times are back to back, meaning 3 hours l be on the field (1 1/2 fully, the other 1 1/2 with the odd break) and it takes 30 minutes to get there and back so 4 hours but likely longer with needing to arrive early. My hope was I could bring my puppy when I was only playing but for the next two weeks that isn't possible (I've already asked but they're short referees).
My question is would it be better to bring her early do some running/time together and then have her on the sidelines (with water, treats, toys, etc). OR should I crate her at home? She's been crated up to 6 hours so it should be okay but normally long periods are in the evening when she's more chill.
She's 7 months old, super friendly, and normally chill but she's an Aussie so she also can be barky and wants to be by my side.
I brought her last week as a test (30 minute game) and she barked at the beginning but then settled.. but also was essentially babysat by another player.. so I'm not sure how well she'll do.
Any dog parents bring their pups to their soccer games?

UPDATE: I ended up bringing my pup to the soccer games, she was extremely chill, the first half of the game she laid down on the side of the field and chewed on her bone. During half time I had a couple of side players ask if they could pet her (which I said of course since she's really friendly). The one ended up babysitting her for the second half of the game and most of my game. She didn't bark, she didn't go after the other dogs or kids, it went about as well as it could go. Going to try again next weekend!

2024.05.18 16:56 True_Pipe1250 I don’t want to sign my son up for baseball again

Hi everyone,
I have a 9-year-old son who has played baseball for the last three seasons. Unfortunately, he has consistently been the weakest player on the team. He's always placed as the last batter and in right field. He is extremely scared of the ball, often ducking, dodging, or running away if a ball is thrown at him. He rarely swings at pitches, usually striking out without much effort. This past season, he managed to get just one hit. Despite my efforts to practice with him and help him improve, he refuses to put in any effort.
Now, it's time to register for fall ball, and he wants to sign up again. However, I'm conflicted. I feel bad for his teammates, as there's always a waitlist due to the high demand for spots in the league. It seems unfair to take a spot from a kid who genuinely enjoys the game and wants to improve, especially when my son doesn't seem to care about getting better or contributing to his team.
He says he wants to play because he enjoys it, but I honestly think he might be doing it for my sake or because he doesn't want to disappoint me. I've suggested trying a different sports, offering to skip fall ball, and his response was, "anything that doesn’t involve balls getting thrown at you."….but then two seconds later he says he wants to play baseball again.
I'm not sure how to handle this situation. How do I kindly tell him that baseball might not be the right sport for him, and that I'm not going to sign him up again? Or should I give him some kind of practice ultimatum? I don't want him to sign up only to be the weakest player on the team again and potentially hold the team back. I'd be perfectly fine if he tried hard and still struggled, but the lack of effort is the real issue. It’s not like he is giving 100% and still sucking. I would be ok with that and sign him up in a heart beat.
Should I let him sign up again? How can I navigate this situation in a way that's best for him and fair to the other kids who want to play?
Thanks for your advice
EDIT: I went with the list idea. Had about 10 choices on it: Boy Scouts, archery, Jiu Jitsu, baseball, swim team, soccer, music lessons, golf, or basketball. He quickly narrowed it down to baseball. I made it clear that I want him to find something he enjoys and not to feel like he has to play baseball or that that’s what me or his mother want him to do. Offered to try something new and circle back to baseball for spring ball but he opposed that as well. So I signed him up for baseball but I did tell him I expect him to practice and if he is not putting in effort we will withdraw him before the season starts and let another kid have his spot. 🤷‍♂️
