2024.04.15 21:11 WinRepresentative803 Supernatural girlfriends.

Supernatural girlfriends.
Kou desuga. Rosario to vampire To love ru
Hello friends, how are you, I hope you are well.
I come to this new topic, to talk, as it is no secret to anyone that the supernatural exists in 100 girlfriends, we have several examples of this with the god of love, the ghost of hakari's father and the god of infinity that was shown to us in the last chapters. But what I'm getting at is will Rentarou also win the heart of some supernatural girl? Like if after 50 girlfriends from girlfriend 51 they start to have supernatural girlfriends like a vampire, an alien or a ghost or a goddess herself, that would also be cool to see.
Note: the image above are some examples of supernatural girlfriends, we have a mummy, a vampire and two aliens.
Before you ask me which anime I took, the photos are three anime and one manga.
Kou desuga. Rosario to vampire. To love ru.

2024.04.11 00:33 TheEVILPINGU The Winning/Losing Heroine Tropes in Harems and Love Triangles Are Real, and They Need to Cease to Exist

This post will consist many sub topics, thus many romance titles will be mentioned to regarding that. Especially harems and love triangles in general.
If you don't want to get heavily spoiled in this genre, and don't know what the romance tropes are with the losing/winning heroine tropes, you may pass.
Even then I will spoiler tag the titles that has no obvious leading and premise one or other. The ones that aren't trope slave romances. In actuality there should be no problem at all, but still I wanted to warn.
If you have already have a decent grab of this topic, and doesn't mind some spoilers, or you want to learn what these tropes are, how they corrupted the romance animanga genre in general, you can safely continue to read. What I'm going to talk about has obvious leading, and conclusion to begin with.
The problem comes mostly from winning/losing heroine tropes; it's no wonder it made me hate the long haired tsunderes.
It's so prominent that it passed the point of being a sole trope, and it become a law of romances. That's really concerning, and quite strange. What are the losing/winning heroine tropes?
Winning heroine tropes; Being the first girl introduced, transfer student, tsundere, being in the cover art of the manga alone, having long hair (blonde is the strongest one).
Losing heroine tropes; Being childhood friend, tomboy, deredere, energetic in general, having short hair.
The most prominent ones are long hair vs short hair aspect of the heroines. Be it harem romance of any kind, or love triangle, "the obvious main girl" you will encounter in a randomly selected series will probably have the long hair, and at least one other competitor(s) will have short hair.
Scale of this curse, and which aspect tops which is a question. Would the childhood friend with long hair lose to the short haired? Dagashi Kashi is an important example here. Not only Saya, the childhood friend has long hair but she's a tsundere as well. Hotaru, the main girl has short hair. Childhood friend curse is quite potent, yes. But, Hotaru is definite main girl, and is on the manga cover art alone. This series is another example of; adding some kind of love triangle to the equation, that the other heroine has no chance of winning by design in any way. And, of course they uses the tropes. Not to mention open ending conclusions.
Let's look at the some more apparent examples; the lord of the romance tropes; Nisekoi. Even non-harem, romance animanga/light novel consumers heard of this series. What happens in that anime? There will be spoilers but it's actually quite obvious, and not even worth of your time.
It's a manga series that uses all the tropes known to exist; yes, all.
Chitoge is the first girl introduced, she has long blonde hair, she is a violent tsundere, she is the transfer student. She is strong, capable of anything, and rich. She has a bodyguard that helps her, cares a lot about her. The premise is designed to make the MC stray away from his mutual love and spend time with her forcefully. Playing the fake lovers...
Her "rival" Kosaki has short hair, is the childhood friend and made arbitrarily shy around her crush that is mutual. She has totally useless wingwoman. She is caring, selfless and heavily supportive. There is countless confession interruptions that are laughable. And, many misunderstandings, of course.
Tsugumi is short haired tomboy, and she has blue hair. The blue short hair curse is a thing as well, but contrary to what's believed, it only comes from short hair curse solely. Blue hair has nothing to do with this actually. She is the bodyguard of the main girl, she doesn't know what to be loved is, and unaware of her femininity. Even her caretaker doesn't know she is a girl. And, of course unarguably the best girl. Yes, this is a war. Always been. Spoiler regarding Tsugumi in the manga; She confesses to Raku closing his ears behind, so he doesn't hear anything, and decides to help Chitoge instead, because she cares about her, and she like him too. So she gives up. What a cringe reality we live in. And she is actually a tsundere, and a lovely example of how tsunderes should be.
That said, there is Marika, voicing out your love that much is total losing flag. She is not even taken seriously.
Kosaki's sister, Haru is the same. She just your everyday disposable heroine, just like the teacher. Coming much later on to the competition is not even worth mentioning. This is another thing romance authors does, and think this is a good fucking idea; adding girl in the middle of the series where a random NPC having more chance of winning. It's just disrespectful to your intelligence.
Yes. These authors mocks our intelligence. We are expected to sit and suffer through this non-stop stalling shitfest forming, watch the heroines we support getting shit on one by one.
As you might have guessed, this goes beyond the losing/winning heroine tropes too; having obvious conclusion from the first chapters in a love rivalry is another biggest problem of romances. Nisekoi checks all the shitty things a harem romcom could have had.
The highly regarded love triangle, Toradora has the same premise, just like Nisekoi as well. And, the devotees of that series will now begin to write furiously, and that's not going to change the fact that Toradora is a shitty trope slave love triangle.
One to one comparison literally can be made. MC loves another girl, she is short haired tomboy, she loves him too. But, because this is an anime, it can't be that easy now, can it? Nope. We add aggressive long-ass haired tsundere again. She forces her way into the MC, again. He is forced to spend time with that shortie. And every other meaningless, devoid of logic things...
Everything that happens in a series like these are obeys but one thing; make the certain heroine lose, make the certain heroine win. The mentality is making the worst girl win, and shit on the best girls, one by one, slowly, but surely. In literal desperation, and that's just not funny at all.
What's the another problem of these? The authors sell and serve their works as justified, having logical endings. The two biggest trope slaves are old fortunately, and hopefully we won't get them much. But, we do, and we will get more.
The same author's work Golden Time has the premise of similar to shit on mutual love, short haired tomboy.
Another one with the same premise is; More than Married Couple. Everything, one to one can be said to this series again. Premise wise.
We have four series that shits on mutual love for the sake of worst girls. And, that's just the tip, which is weird.
And, I should add. In these series, anime cover art consists all the casts while the manga only the obvious winner. Producers makes this knowingly to make it not as obvious for the anime consumers, and wonder a bit, have crumb of hope for their waifus, and buy the manga. Lol.
More than Married Couple's second season is still not confirmed, just like Nisekoi didn't get the rest of the adaptation. That should tell some things. This needs to change.
Rent a Girlfriends has four heroines. We all know the long-ass haired hypocrite, selfish, family friendly prostitute tsundere is the main girl. And, what all other three girls have in common? Yes, all three has short hairs. Odd... indeed, isn't it? Non-stop stalling again, and all the tropes, shitty things. It's the epitome of hell.
What about Oregairu? Normally, it's sold as a love triangle between Yui and Yukino, but this is harem in not-disguise at all; Kawasaki, Iroha, even Haruno, the teacher and Saika. It's harem. Oh, Toradora is harem in a way too. More than one love interest can be considered harem.
Again, short hair vs long hair. Yukino is tsundere, ice-queen, smart, rich, a Mary Sue if you will. Yui? Classic short hair, airhead, energetic deredere. Predictable from the first episode, another trope slave. And this series without doubt is one of the worst representation of romances, and devotees of it will surely have a saying. Season 3 spoilers; The series is designed to make Yui suffer non-stop, insufferable Hachiman and Yukino's stalling is a total torture to through.
I don't care how they adapted the LN. This does not matter, it doesn't change the fact that this series is a trope slave to its core. Yui is just superior. Gahamama, she shouldn't be forgotten. Nothing less can be expected from the best girl's mama.
Wait... there is something wrong here... Ruka from Rent a Gf, Yui from Oregairu... they... both are short haired derederes. Interesting. Yes, short hairs are often associated with another losing heroine trope; being deredere, airhead combo. It's not really needed to be losing heroine but they add anyway. I think there is an untold rule the authors must obey, if they don't the world will end. That seems like a logical explanation to these things at this point.
I should add that there are instances where the short haired girl wins in the competition, and oddly it's against the another short haired heroine. And yet in one of them the worst ending welcomes us.
Two series that I talk about; the bad love triangle Just Because! The great and unique example; Kokoro Connect
Anyways, there is no end to this trope slave harems or love triangles. I will quickly go through some of the short hair vs long hair trope, and jump to the how romances should be done with giving examples. I spoiler tagged the ones the winner is not obvious. Though manga cover art and premise tells some things clearly.

Let's come to the how harems should be handled, what makes them unique in this trope slave filled genre?
The World God Only Knows is an harem example of some kind to this. There is no obvious main girl, the manga cover art only shows the MC. So there is no cheating with changing the anime cover art. Lol. Season 3 of this series is a standalone masterpiece I would definitely recommend it.
The last arc that is not adapted in the manga is not that great but not that bad either. Manga ending spoilers; The only thing, ironically Ayumi the first girl introduced was the best girl, and she didn't win. Well, she is tomboy, and has short hair. This series uses the tropes too, as there the another childhood friend, and the MC literally gives her a letter in end that says "I will never love you." Compared to season 3, and the Ayumi's parts were god tier, with all the other heroine's arcs, the manga unfortunately is very weird. Chihiro is a good girl so that's not the worst ending at least.
Amagami SS, PhotoKano, Seiren, KimiKiss: Various Heroines, and the gigachad We Never Learn uses the route based endings which is the supreme choice to how harems should be concluded ultimately. Yes, even the teacher gets her own ending. They all being well-made is just the cherry on top. The world never seen more gigachad than We Never Learn's mangaka.
I highly recommend especially Amagami SS and We Never Learn. Watching the anime first of the We Never Learn, then reading the manga start to finish is the way.
There is the true harem romcom which does it uniquely; all girls are well respected, they all are the main girls, there is just no one main girl with others being side chicks. Yes, the peak fiction that is called 100 Girlfriends. Not much to say here, simply peak. We need more tomboys though!
The Quintessential Quintuplets. The time has come for the harem that should be golden standard of one winner heroine ending harem romances.
Manga cover art tells nothing again, the romance tropes that are never ending misunderstandings, stalling does not exists here. Some tropes that is takes in some places such as the firework day is there, but they are handled uniquely.
All the quints are well respected, all have their own spotlights. No main girl. Spoilers for the bride; >! Yes, Yotsuba's win denies all the tropes I called earlier. She is short haired airhead deredere. But I know this made certain group, which is a lot of people angry. Their claims are laughable, and that doesn't matter. People saw Yotsuba as a filler entertainment factor just like other trope slave harems, so her being a winner ripped them down from their reality. For the first time a deredere won, and they just couldn't know how to respond, so they hate her, and the ending.!<
The best in that series won, no doubt here, even then I would want to see other quint's ending here. After the main winner's ending the true ending and other quints' the alternative ending, none will be sad I think. Everyone's happy.
This always will top the harem ending, and it's not even close.
Megami no Cafe Terrace
Amagami-san Chin no Enmusubi
Mikadono Sanshimai wa Angai, Choroi. There three follow's the TQQ's steps, they don't have a main girl. All of them are great.
Unique love triangles are, not gonna spoil them for the ones who wants to watch/read them;
Ookami Shounen wa Kyou mo Uso wo Kasaneru; Don't let the cross-dressing get you. It's good.
Aku no Hana; Strictly manga needs to read. Pass the anime.
Onanie Master Kurosawa
Kokoro Connect
Nagi no Asukara
And, lastly I want to talk about the series that are created exactly to be subversion of harem tropes.
Love Comedy Manga ni Haitteshimatta node, Oshi no Make Heroine wo Zenryoku de Shiawase ni Suru: This masterwork is Nisekoi if it were to be good, Tsugumi gets the love she deserves. Just read this, and you may thank me later. It's crazy that managakas themselves are aware of what they are creating, which actually makes everything worse to comprehend.
Make Heroine Wo Katasetai!: The side character knows he is in Nisekoi. But a one shot. Shame, great things does not last long.
Flag Capture in the First Move: Rejection of romance tropes in small parts.
That's my ted talk. Of course there are much to talk, many other aspects and things that I forgot 100%. But, that way it would be a never ending post, and we would have argued non-stop. So, I will stop here. Oh, lastly, I hate neutron star dense MCs. Well, it all comes to how you do it. Lol.
Thank you for giving your time and reading it.

2024.04.01 09:27 StarJake20 Date A Live Wheel Unfortunate #6

Like the last five times I did this, the punishments are inspired by Dude Perfect's Wheel Unfortunate, only modified to fit Date A Live. You get to pick which punishment is the worst for the spirit you have in your mind.
Publish your phone number: The punished DAL character must publish their phone number on social media (via Instagram Story, Facebook story, or a TwitteX post as long as it’s public, it doesn’t matter if it’s permanent or temporary) and answer as many calls as they can until they change their SIM card or their temporary story fades away (but some might save the phone number so it’s best for the spirits to change their number).
Three rounds with Tenka: Inverse Tohka (or Tenka) is out; someone must fight her to calm her. The punished character has to survive three boxing rounds against Tenka, who will take it seriously and brutalize the punished person. The first round is basically a normal boxing match; the second round has Tenka able to use a shock collar on the punished person, and the third round has handcuffs on the punished spirit. If Tohka is chosen, it’ll be a Rosario + Vampire situation (the episode where a mirror causes Moka to split her outer and inner selves). If not, then Moon Knight situation where Tenka controls Tohka’s body to punch Tohka. (It would be rough for spirits weak with physical combat like Yoshino, Kotori, Miku, Natsumi, Nia, Mukuro, Mayuri, Rinne, and Rio)
Watch a soccer (football) game blindfolded: The spirits watch a soccer game; however, the punished person has to be blindfolded throughout the entire game. This would annoy everyone since they would have to be blindfolded for hours and depend on listening.
Ecchi Calendar Photoshoot: The punished person must have an ecchi, risque, or borderline hentai calendar photoshoot and take 12 pictures for the months on the calendar. These photos include ecchi forms of an astronaut, a detective, a sailor, a construction worker, a scientist, a lifeguard, a cowgirl (or cowboy, both literal or western themed), a gardener, a rocker, an animal theme, a wrestler, and a Christmas one. Three bonus photos are included for the front and back covers, alongside a nude photo, which would be hidden in the calendar. The punished person must then sell them on the streets and make $1000 off them (as of April 2024, 151338.50 yen). The prices are dynamic depending on how the DAL character sells them, but they must make the total needed in profit. Embarrassing and annoying for every spirit.
Open Mic Comedy: The chosen DAL character has to do standup comedy in a public place. There is no script, and the character is allowed to have notes on hand. This might work out for Yoshino via Yoshinon, Kotori (though only directed toward bad jokes revolving around Shido), the Yamai Twins, Miku, Origami, Nia, Kurumi, and Reine/Mio. However, they must make the audience laugh hard or remain a standup comedian throughout the day. It's just a difficult and miserable punishment not only for the one doing the comedy but likely for anyone in attendance if the spirit cannot make good jokes.
Un-Crafty Meal Taster: In this punishment, the DAL character has to taste terrible burgers and smoothies made by DAL characters. Tohka might make a giant Japanese food combination burger and a smoothie mixed with random Japanese food. Yoshino might mash frozen food into a sandwich alongside blended frozen food into a smoothie. Kotori would combine a lollipop, candy, spicy burger, and smoothie. The Yamai Twins would mix chicken with unbearable sauces and do the same for their smoothie. Miku would mix lots of seafood (primarily shellfish with their shells) into her smoothie and burger patty. Natsumi would use junk food and drinks (like literal gas station food) in her burger and smoothie. Origami would put ‘her fluids’ and strange ingredients in her burger and drink (I’m sure we all know what they are rather than turtle soup like in S3). Nia would go for full-on vegetables for her burger and smoothie. Mukuro would mix a bunch of Chinese Food to create a soggy ‘Chinese Burger’ and a ‘Chinese Food Smoothie.’ Kurumi would go for a land meat supreme for her undercooked burger and have her smoothie mix undercooked blended meat. Shido would likely burn his burger and use burned bento food for his smoothie. As for Reine/Mio, I honestly do not know what she would use to make an abomination of burgers and smoothies. Regardless, I’m sure anyone with this punishment will suffer from tasting terrible food from the spirits and Shido.

2024.03.23 22:18 SanderSo47 Directors at the Box Office: Spike Lee

Directors at the Box Office: Spike Lee
https://preview.redd.it/xp5s85nfh5qc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=91b45ea8c874d14e526db17255a31a9c44b609ac
Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Spike Lee's turn.
Lee enrolled in Morehouse College, a historically black college in Atlanta, where he made his first student film, Last Hustle in Brooklyn. He did graduate work at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts in film and television. He continued making some student films, with the help of his classmates Ang Lee and Ernest Dickerson.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

She's Gotta Have It (1986)

"A seriously sexy comedy."
His directorial debut. The film stars Tracy Camilla Johns, Tommy Redmond Hicks, John Canada Terrell and Lee himself. The plot concerns a young woman who is seeing three men, and the feelings this arrangement provokes.
Lee originally wanted to make a film focused on a bike messenger, but lack of funding shelved it. So he decided to make something within a very limited budget. Despite facing challenges, Lee managed to redirect an $18,000 grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, as well as more grants from other institutions. Lee adopted a cost-effective approach, working with minimal locations, and no elaborate costumes or sets, to complete the film without the prolonged effort of raising substantial funds for a larger production.
After getting a distributor, Lee had to make the sure the film could be as profitable as possible. And it succeeded; on a $175,000 budget, it earned $7 million domestically. It also received great reviews, and Lee quickly rose to prominence, especially as he achieved this on a very low budget.
  • Budget: $175,000.
  • Domestic gross: $7,137,502.
  • Worldwide gross: $7,137,502.

School Daze (1988)

"Dog or die."
His second joint. It stars Lee, Laurence Fishburne, Giancarlo Esposito, and Tisha Campbell. Based partly on Lee's experiences as a student at Morehouse College in the Atlanta University Center during the 1970s, it is a story about undergraduates in a fraternity and sorority clashing with some of their classmates at a historically black college during homecoming week.
While Lee enjoyed great reviews for his first joint, that wasn't the case here. It received mixed reviews, and critics were polarized over Lee's handling of its subject matters. Although, now that Columbia was distributing, the film was a box office success.
  • Budget: $6,100,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,545,844.
  • Worldwide gross: $14,545,844.

Do the Right Thing (1989)

"It's the hottest day of the summer. You can do nothing, you can do something, or you can..."
His third joint. It stars Lee, Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Richard Edson, Giancarlo Esposito, Bill Nunn, John Turturro, Samuel L. Jackson, Martin Lawrence and Rosie Perez. The story explores a Brooklyn neighborhood's simmering racial tension between its African-American residents and the Italian-American owners of a local pizzeria, culminating in tragedy and violence on a hot summer's day.
Lee conceived the film as he discussed the 1986 incident at Howard Beach, Queens with Robert De Niro. The original script ended with a stronger reconciliation between Mookie and Sal than Lee used in the film. In this version, Sal's comments to Mookie are similar to Da Mayor's earlier comments in the film and hint at some common ground and perhaps Sal's understanding of why Mookie tried to destroy his restaurant. Lee has not explicitly explained why he changed the ending but his contemporaneous notes compiled in the film's companion book indicate Lisa Jones expressed Sal's reaction as "too nice" as originally written.
When it premiered, it was clear that a masterpiece has arrived. It was hailed by critics as one of the best films, not just from the year, but ever made. It was also a box office success, continuing Lee's streak. Lee received his first Oscar nom for Best Original Screenplay, and Aiello was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, although they didn't win. Many also expressed disappointment at the Academy for not nominating it for Best Picture. But if Lee wasn't known in Hollywood, he now was.
  • Budget: $6,200,000.
  • Domestic gross: $27,545,445.
  • Worldwide gross: $37,295,445.

Mo' Better Blues (1990)

"Tonight."
His fourth joint. It stars Lee, Denzel Washington, and Wesley Snipes, and Spike Lee. It follows a period in the life of fictional jazz trumpeter Bleek Gilliam as a series of bad decisions result in his jeopardizing both his relationships and his playing career. The film focuses on themes of friendship, loyalty, honesty, cause-and-effect, and ultimately salvation.
It received favorable reviews, although many felt it didn't live up to the standards of Lee. At the box office, his streak ran out and Lee had his first bomb.
  • Budget: $10,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $16,153,593.
  • Worldwide gross: $16,153,593.

Jungle Fever (1991)

His fifth joint. It stars Lee, Wesley Snipes, Annabella Sciorra, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Samuel L. Jackson, Lonette McKee, John Turturro, Frank Vincent, Tim Robbins, Brad Dourif, Giancarlo Esposito, Debi Mazar, Michael Imperioli, Anthony Quinn, Halle Berry and Queen Latifah, and explores the beginning and end of an extramarital interracial relationship against the urban backdrop of the streets of New York City in the early 1990s.
A few months after the murder of Yusuf K. Hawkins on 1989, Lee began conceptualizing the film, jotting down ideas and eventually organizing them into scenes on index cards. Subsequently, he commenced writing dialogue with specific actors in mind, envisioning Wesley Snipes, Ossie Davis, and John Turturro for the roles of "Flipper Purify," "The Good Reverend Doctor Purify," and "Paulie Carbone," respectively. Lee initially filmed a prologue addressing racial issues, but at the encouragement of distributor Universal Pictures, he decided to remove the "offending" scene.
The film received great reviews, and Samuel L. Jackson was commended for his performance, with many considering his breakout role. Lee also recovered from his previous bomb, and the film became his highest grossing film.
  • Budget: $14,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $32,482,682.
  • Worldwide gross: $43,882,682.

Malcolm X (1992)

His sixth joint. It stars Denzel Washington, Angela Bassett, Albert Hall, Al Freeman Jr., and Delroy Lindo. It focuses on the life of African-American activist Malcolm X.
Since 1967, Marvin Worth has tried to make a film based on Malcolm X. Worth had met Malcolm X, then called "Detroit Red," as a teenager selling drugs in New York City. However, the project was stuck in development hell as there were still unsolved stuff over his life, and it saw the involvement and eventual departure of stars like Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy. The production was considered controversial long before filming began. The crux of the controversy was Malcolm X's denunciation of whites before he undertook his hajj. He was, arguably, not well regarded among white citizens by and large; however, he had risen to become a hero in the African-American community and a symbol of blacks' struggles, particularly during the presidencies of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush.
Once WB got involved, they hired Norman Jewison as the director. Jewison in turn got Denzel Washington to play the lead role. But some people complained that a black director should helm a Malcolm X biopic. One of those who complained was Lee; since college, he had considered a film adaptation of The Autobiography of Malcolm X to be a dream project. Jewison left the project, though he noted he gave up the movie not because of the protest, but because he could not reconcile Malcolm's private and public lives. Lee was eventually hired, and he re-wrote the script to accommodate his vision. It was the first non-documentary, and the first American film, to be given permission to film in Mecca (or within the Haram Sharif). It also featured a cameo appearance by Nelson Mandela, before he became President of South Africa.
The film received critical acclaim, particularly for Washington's performance. It was also a box office success; it hit $73 million worldwide, despite its 202-minute runtime. Washington received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, losing to Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman, a decision which Lee criticized, saying "I'm not the only one who thinks Denzel was robbed on that one."
  • Budget: $35,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $48,169,910.
  • Worldwide gross: $73,102,910.

Crooklyn (1994)

"A new look at the old neighborhood."
His seventh joint. It stars Alfre Woodard, Delroy Lindo, Zelda Harris and Lee. Taking place in the Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, during the summer of 1973, the film primarily centers on a young girl named Troy Carmichael, and her family. Troy learns life lessons through her rowdy brothers Clinton, Wendell, Nate, and Joseph; her loving but strict mother Carolyn, and her naive, struggling father Woody.
While it received positive reviews, it wasn't a box office success. It didn't surpass its production budget.
  • Budget: $14,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $13,642,861.
  • Worldwide gross: $13,642,861.

Clockers (1995)

"When there's murder on the streets, everyone is a suspect."
His eighth joint. Based on the novel by Richard Price, it stars Harvey Keitel, John Turturro, Delroy Lindo, and Mekhi Phifer. Set in New York City, Clockers tells the story of Strike, a street-level drug dealer who becomes entangled in a murder investigation.
The film originally entered production with Martin Scorsese attached to direct; he had previously collaborated with Price on The Color of Money. Scorsese eventually dropped out of production to focus on his passion project Casino, at which point Lee stepped in to direct and rewrite the script, Scorsese remained a co-producer alongside Lee.
It received generally positive reviews, but it fared very poorly at the box office.
  • Budget: $25,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $13,071,518.
  • Worldwide gross: $13,071,518.

Girl 6 (1996)

"Six is for sex."
His ninth joint. The film stars Theresa Randle, Isaiah Washington, and Lee, and follows the life of an aspiring actress in New York as she is upset by the treatment of women in the movie industry during one of her screen tests with Quentin Tarantino.
The film was one of the worst received films in Lee's career, and it made just $4 million, becoming his lowest grossing film.
  • Budget: $12,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $4,939,939.
  • Worldwide gross: $4,939,939.

Get on the Bus (1996)

"On October 16, 1996, the one year anniversary of the Million Man March, Spike Lee invites you to lift your head, raise your voice, and..."
His tenth joint. It stars Richard Belzer, De'aundre Bonds, Andre Braugher, Thomas Jefferson Byrd, Gabriel Casseus, Albert Hall, Hill Harper, Harry Lennix, Bernie Mac, Wendell Pierce, Roger Guenveur Smith, Isaiah Washington, Steve White, Ossie Davis, and Charles S. Dutton. It follows a group of African-American men who are taking a cross-country bus trip in order to participate in the Million Man March.
The film was well received, and it barely recouped its production budget.
  • Budget: $2,400,000.
  • Domestic gross: $5,754,249.
  • Worldwide gross: $5,754,249.

He Got Game (1998)

"The Father. The Son. And the Holy Game."
His 11th joint. It stars Denzel Washington, Ray Allen and Milla Jovovich. The film revolves around Jake Shuttlesworth, father of the top-ranked basketball prospect in the country, Jesus Shuttlesworth. Jake, in prison for killing his wife, is released on parole for a week by the state's governor to persuade his son to play for the governor's alma mater in exchange for a reduced prison sentence.
Despite good reviews and Denzel's presence, it wasn't a box office success.
  • Budget: $25,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $21,567,853.
  • Worldwide gross: $21,567,853.

Summer of Sam (1999)

"The summer of '77 was a killer."
His 12th joint. It stars John Leguizamo, Adrien Brody, Mira Sorvino, Jennifer Esposito, and Anthony LaPaglia. It follows the 1977 David Berkowitz (Son of Sam) serial murders and their effect on a group of fictional residents of an Italian-American neighborhood in The Bronx in the late 1970s. The killer, David Berkowitz, his murders and the investigation are shown in the film, but the focus is on two young men from the neighborhood: Vinny, whose marriage is faltering due to his cheating, and Ritchie, Vinny's childhood friend who has embraced punk fashion and music.
The film polarized critics and audiences with its story and content. It continued Lee's poor box office streak, not even hitting $20 million.
  • Budget: $22,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,288,130.
  • Worldwide gross: $19,288,130.

Bamboozled (2000)

His 13th joint. It stars Damon Wayans, Jada Pinkett Smith, Savion Glover, Tommy Davidson, and Michael Rapaport. It follows a modern televised minstrel show featuring black actors donning blackface makeup and the resulting violent fallout from the show's success.
The film polarized critics, who deemed it too heavy-handed in its satire. It was also a huge flop, making just $2 million at the box office. In subsequent years, however, the film has earned a cult following.
  • Budget: $10,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $2,274,979.
  • Worldwide gross: $2,463,650.

25th Hour (2002)

"Can you change your whole life in a day?"
His 14th joint. Based on the novel by David Benioff, it stars Edward Norton, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Barry Pepper, Rosario Dawson, Anna Paquin, and Brian Cox. It tells the story of a man's last 24 hours of freedom as he prepares to go to prison for seven years for dealing drugs.
Months before the book was published, Tobey Maguire found a manuscript and was interested in playing the lead. However, his commitment to Spider-Man prevented it from happening and he only served as a producer. Lee was interested in the long monologue that Benioff called the "fuck monologue" whereby Monty ranted against the five boroughs of New York; Benioff had considered leaving it out as he thought it might not be dramatic, and Lee persuaded Benioff to keep it in. The film was in the "planning stages" at the time of the September 11 attacks, and so Lee "decided not to ignore the tragedy but to integrate it into his story".
The film was well received, especially for its portrayal of post-9/11 New York. It was also a box office success, helping Lee recover from his previous stumbles.
  • Budget: $5,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $13,084,595.
  • Worldwide gross: $23,932,055.

She Hate Me (2004)

"A new film about one heterosexual male and 18 lesbians."
His 15th joint. It stars Anthony Mackie, Kerry Washington, Ellen Barkin, Monica Bellucci, Brian Dennehy, Woody Harrelson, Bai Ling, and John Turturro. The film touches on a variety of themes such as corporate greed, race, sexuality, and politics.
The film received Lee's worst reviews by far. A huge point was the film's inconsistent tone, feeling that it couldn't decide if it wants to be a commentary on corporate greed or a sex farce. The film also generated controversy for its depiction of lesbian women and for portraying them as wanting to have sex with a man for procreative purposes. It was also a huge bomb at the box office, becoming his lowest grossing title.
  • Budget: $9,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $366,037.
  • Worldwide gross: $1,526,951.

Inside Man (2006)

"It looked like the perfect bank robbery. But you can't judge a crime by its cover."
His 16th joint. The film stars Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster, Christopher Plummer, Willem Dafoe, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. It centers on an elaborate bank heist-turned-hostage situation on Wall Street.
The script was written by Russell Gewirtz, a former lawyer who conceived the idea while vacationing in several countries. A first time-screenwriter, Gewirtz studied a number of screenplays, and spent five years developing the premise. When Universal bought it, Ron Howard signed to direct but had to step out to prioritize Cinderella Man. Lee agreed to direct, feeling comparisons to Dog Day Afternoon. Per Lee's wishes, Marcia Jean Kurtz and Lionel Pina were additionally cast to reprise their roles from Dog Day Afternoon in Easter egg cameo appearances.
The film opened with $28 million, marking the best debut for both Lee and Denzel. Worldwide, the film closed with a pretty great $186 million, easily becoming Lee's highest grossing film and his first to pass the $100 million milestone. The film also received acclaim, and Lee was praised for eschewing his usual style and delivering a straightforward thriller.
  • Budget: $45,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $88,513,495.
  • Worldwide gross: $186,003,591.

Miracle at St. Anna (2008)

"World War II has its heroes and its miracles."
His 17th joint. Based on James McBride's novel, it stars Derek Luke, Michael Ealy, Laz Alonso, Omar Benson Miller, Pierfrancesco Favino and Valentina Cervi, John Turturro, Joseph Gordon Levitt, John Leguizamo, D.B. Sweeney and Kerry Washington. Set primarily in Italy during the Italian Civil War in World War II, the film tells the story of four Buffalo Soldiers of the 92nd Infantry Division who seek refuge in a small Tuscan village, where they form a bond with the residents. The story is presented as a flashback, as one survivor, Hector Negron, reflects upon his experiences in a frame story set in 1980s New York.
The film drew negative reactions, and made just $9 million worldwide.
  • Budget: $45,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $7,919,117.
  • Worldwide gross: $9,333,654.

Red Hook Summer (2012)

His 18th joint. It stars Clarke Peters, Nate Parker, Thomas Jefferson Byrd, Toni Lysaith, and Jules Brown, and follows a well-to-do Atlanta teen who documents a summer spent in the Brooklyn housing projects with his devout grandfather.
The film was unfavorably received, particularly for its twist ending. It didn't even make $1 million, becoming Lee's lowest grossing film ever.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $338,803.
  • Worldwide gross: $338,803.

Oldboy (2013)

"Ask not why you were imprisoned. Ask why you were set free."
His first film. A remake of the South Korean film by Park Chan-wook, it stars Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, and Sharlto Copley. It follows a man named Joe who searches for his captors after being mysteriously imprisoned for twenty years.
An American remake of Oldboy was in development for years. It saw the involvement of directors like Justin Lin and Steven Spielberg, and Will Smith attached to star. Spielberg's idea was not remaking the film, instead adapting the Old Boy manga itself, which is considerably different from the original film. Lee was later hired. His version was 140 minutes long, but the producers heavily re-edited the film to 105 minutes (re-edits by producers also included the "one-shot hammer" scene).
The film received negative reactions. Both critics and audiences agreed that the film was simply unnecessary and it did not improve over the original in any way. It was also a huge box office bomb, making just $5 million. Lee and Josh Brolin were unhappy with the final version. Lee even removed his trademark "A Spike Lee Joint" credit for a more impersonal "A Spike Lee Film" during the editing process. Brolin has also said that he prefers Lee's version of the film, though it is not clear if this cut will ever be released.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $2,193,658.
  • Worldwide gross: $5,186,767.

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus (2014)

His 20th joint. It stars Zaraah Abrahams, Stephen Tyrone Williams, Rami Malek, and Elvis Nolasco, and follows a wealthy anthropologist who is stabbed by an ancient African dagger and turned into a vampire.
As the film was released on VOD, there are no box office numbers. It received negative reviews.

Chi-Raq (2015)

He made 24 joints, but only 21 have reported box office grosses. Across those 21 joints, she has made $595,301,405 worldwide. That's $28,347,685 per joint.

The Verdict

Very inconsistent.
Lee has been one of the most important filmmakers of the past decades, even if the quality of his joints have varied. And that inconsistency is shown at the box office; very few of his joints have been hits. Only one (Inside Man) was popular overseas. But as you can see, he's not struggling in finding funding. And some films, despite being less than great, still have some interesting ideas. It speaks volumes how he refers to his works as "joints"... except for the lame Oldboy remake.
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Baz Luhrmann. Very few films, but he's a very recognizable talent.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... Todd Phillips. The journey from sex comedies to Joker is crazy.
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
March 25-31 Baz Luhrmann 30 years, only 6 films.
April 1-7 Terrence Malick What's the deal with The Way of the Wind?
April 8-14 Guillermo del Toro So... no At the Mountains of Madness?
April 15-21 Todd Phillips Who's laughing now?
Who should be next after Phillips? That's up to you. But there's a catch this week.
I'm gonna suggest four names and of these names, you should choose. The director with the most votes will receive a post after Phillips. Here are the four choices:
  • John Carpenter. Known for making films that may not have been appreciated at the time, but grew into a cult following.
  • Renny Harlin. The most successful director with the most flops?
  • Tony Scott. Ridley's brother, known for launching Tom Cruise's career into superstardom and for his collaborations with Denzel Washington.
  • Paul Verhoeven. An influential part of the 80s and 90s known for his satire.
No other names will be allowed for this week. We'll return to our normal schedule next week.

2024.02.24 00:11 duhadventure Why does everyone do the broken masquerade dirty?

You are not alone. Courtesy spoiler warning for the following series that will be discussed: Transformers (Michael Bay), Rosario + Vampire (Manga), Heroes (2006 tv series), Jujutsu Kaisen (Anime and Manga), and X-Men: Evolution, Dance in the Vampire Bund, Monster Musume, and Person of Interest.
I love the masquerade. It's one of my favorite tropes where people have to keep things hidden, sometimes helped by magic that stops the muggles from seeing magic stuff. But what I love even more is when that masquerade gets broken and everyone has to deal with it being all out in the open.
Unfortunately, 90% of the time this is done at the end of the series. I am not counting stories set after the masquerade has been broken, because they usually just gloss over the fact (Looking at you Monster Musume >-<)
Ok, you are ending your series.. Lets take a look at a show like Heroes, where at the end of the series the existence of Evolved humans is revealed to the world at large. There were multiple other times in the story where alternate timelines where they were known existed, but this is changed the status quo for the whole series--
Oh wait, the series ended, and the ramifications of that were only seen in the short sequel series Heroes: Reborn.
Ok, what about the end of Rosario + Vampire's manga run? Huge fight, people know that monsters exist now, lets see where that goes... oh wait, it doesn't go anywhere. They just say "Welp, it's gonna be hard to coexist, but we can do it :D"
And this is a recurring problem. Don't get me wrong, it's nice to have a big dramatic reveal at the series finale of something, but most of the time they leave it open-ended or just skip past all the "we have to deal with this now, here are the consequences". I don't really have a problem with that. The thing I dislike is the lack of media that have that reveal at the start or midway through it and actually do something besides continuing the story.
You did it! Kinda. Person of Interest is an amazing show (IMO), and something that you would think would be a great candidate for the machine's existence being revealed. And it does! Except it didn't. What I'm referring to is S3E22 & 23 (A house Divided and Deus Ex Machina). A group wanting to expose the existence of a mass-surveillance machine captures multiple important people on different sides of the story, and broadcasts their trial to the entire world, where the secrets of the machine are revealed. This should be something that changes the whole story, but it isn't. (The story does change massively, but that isn't why).
Why? Because it was't being streamed to the whole world, just a single office. At the time, I thought they were actually going to do it and blow the whole conspiracy wide open. I'm not even mad that they didn't in this instance, because the episode and series as a whole are fantastic. If you are using the breaking of the masquerade as a misdirect and you execute it well enough I think that is perfectly acceptable, especially when you think they actually are going to do it.
Now lets talk about when they do break the masquerade.
Oh no, another JJK post! No, I'm just discussing part of it. Jujutsu Kaisen, one of the most commonly as of late topics on this subreddit. The part I'm referring to is the end of the Shibuya Incident (CH137 or S2E23) where the government reveals the existence of cursed spirits.
(From the anime sub version I watched) "We need to disclose the existence of cursed spirits." \Multiple gasps around room** "We must publicize the existence of cursed spirits?! Seriously?"
As Gordon Ramsey would say, Delicious. Finally some good fucking food. There we go, a masquerade reveal in the middle of the story with actual visible consequences and disruption to the status quo...
Until they decide to ignore it and go back to the Sukuna plot. It was good while it lasted though. I loved watching other governments getting involved and the brief parts where normal citizens were dealing with it.
I guess I can't have my cake and eat it too. Ok, *flips notes* what do I have left for this section... Ah, Transformers.
Revenge of the Fallen isn't a great movie, but it does have one of my favorite reveal scenes and sets a plot point for the sequel. I just really like the way the Broastcast was hijacked and the existence of Cybertronians was just shoved in everyone's faces. The consequences of that being seen in Dark of the Moon where the autobots openly work with the US government topped off with the Decepticon's attack on Chicago.
Unfortunately, that's all you get out of it, because one, this is a movie with a certain runtime, and two, this is a Micheal Bay movie. Worldbuilding, politics? Miss me with that shit. Give me more explosions, crude jokes and boobs.
Can this be executed well? Yes. Yes it can. Off the top of my head, there are two examples of this situation being executed well. X-Men Evolution (Season 2 finale) and Dance in the Vampire Bund.
Admittedly, I haven't read the rest of Vampire Bund. I was interested in the series solely because the masquerade is broken in the first episode, and the majority of the series deals with the social and political fallout of that in between fights and stuff. Personally, I didn't like the show, but that wasn't why and isn't very important to my argument/rant. The reason I watched the show executed it well, and that's what I was there for.
X-Men Evolution's second season is probably the strongest contender because one of the main points of X-Men in any setting is the desire for peaceful coexistence with humans. The main point of the X-men is acceptance and the struggle against people on both sides who don't want that. The end of the second season sees the existence of mutants revealed to the world, and a significant portion of the final two seasons after is dedicated to the fallout of the reveal.
Closing thoughts. Why do so many series ignore the consequences of the masquerade breaking? The answer is pretty simple.
It's just not what a majority of people are there to see. Most people don't care about the political and social consequences in the story. You watch Jujutsu Kaisen for the fights. You watch Michael Bay movies because you like explosions. A vast majority of people simply don't care about worldbuilding that much, and all forms of media have time slots and deadlines. You can't fit everything into it.
Why can't anyone cater to my specific niche tastes? /s
Anyway, that's my thoughts on the matter. This has been sitting in my head rent-free for weeks now and I really need that space.

Top 11 Anime with Succubus Characters:
Albedo (Overlord): A key figure in the "anime with succubus" genre, Albedo from the "Overlord" series serves as the supremely loyal and formidable overseer of the Floor Guardians.

Kurumu Kurono (Rosario + Vampire): Kurumu is a student at Yokai Academy who initially attempts to bewitch the male lead with her charm, eventually developing genuine feelings for him.

Sakie Satou (Interviews with Monster Girls): Sakie is a succubus and teacher attempting to lead a normal life. She provides an interesting portrayal as she grapples to control her seductive nature.

Ageha Kurono (Rosario + Vampire): As Kurumu's mother, Ageha maintains the composure and warmth characteristic of a mature "anime succubus," confidently embodying her role in the "anime with succubus" realm.

Mayu Tsukimura (Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun): Portrayed as kind-hearted and slightly clumsy. Mayu is notable in "Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun" for her affable nature and struggles with controlling her powers.

Shella (The Qwaser of Stigmata): Despite limited screen time in this highly controversial series, Shella utilizes her succubus abilities, contributing her character.

Morrigan Aensland (Darkstalkers): Having originated in video games, Morrigan has appeared in various anime adaptations. As a succubus, she embodies the thrill-seeking aspect of her character, often torn between the responsibilities of the demon world and her pursuit of excitement.

2024.02.04 07:31 xBl00dontheWallx A4A Attention all monster/fantasy lovers!

Hello! I'm looking to possibly do one of the plots I will list below! Just a quick few things: I am either going to play as a female or a feminine male, please no irl reference photos for your characters (either drawn or descriptions is fine!), I am a bit busy so I apologize if it takes me a bit to respond!
Now for the plots:
1.) You are a human. Unbeknownst to you, humans AREN'T the only ones walking amongst everyone. You end up (either A.) Volunteering or B.) Attending willingly) what has popped up as a miracle 'church'. It's basically like a church but everyone who attends claims to have had their lives changed in the best ways- getting rich, finding love, etc. You end up stumbling upon the secret behind this church though... It's not really a church. It's a safe haven/retreat ran by/for demons! And even more intriguing, they apparently have been keeping a beast asleep this whole time.. But whoops, you accidentally wake it up one day! (Can collaborate more if you wanna tweak details or add something!!)
2.) Basically the plot of Rosario + vampire, kinda minus all the ladies crushing on you lol. You are a human that has accidentally been accepted into a monster only school! You have to keep your secret of being a human! But maybe someone has already found out...
3.) You are a monster that has been living alone in the woods. I accidentally stumble upon you one day, but instead of running.. I actually keep you company. Each day I return, sometimes bringing gifts, sometimes bringing food, etc. You begin to develop feelings for me (either A.) You could follow me out of the woods and end up at my home or B.) You try to convince me to stay in the woods with you).
4.) You are a police officer that has been tasked with the recent spike of murders in the area. You have no clues about any of them except for one thing.. You see the same person at each scene, standing kinda away and just watching. Something about them feels off.. Like other worldly. (Can delve more into detail if requested!)
I am semi-lit to lit! No one liners or novella please! (I can't keep up with novella people TvT) I am also CST and am okay with time zone differences! (Just give me a heads up!) I am also open to becoming friends as well! Thank you for reading! ☆
