2024.05.05 14:40 Hlorpy-Flatworm-1705 The Missing Five Game
Due to technical difficulties, the suggested names of five families' newborns got deleted from Nicole the Namer's computer. Using the criteria given, help her come up with more choices to send to them.
- The Nicholses - Fern and Sage Nichols are expecting a little boy. Since they are forgoing a middle name, they want a hyphenated name for their son, with one of the names being related to nature, specifically botany.
- Lola Warwick and her boyfriend, Henry Webber, are expecting twin girls. Though she loves the name Jessica, it is already the name of her boyfriend's eldest daughter. She likes popular names from the 1980s and 1990s, while hed prefer names that embrace his Hungarian roots.
- Trevor is extremely picky so he and his wife, Hannah, knew theyd have to go to a naming coach when they found out about their third child. They have an older daughter, Alveoli Jayne Bennett, who goes by Allie and a son named Cisco Daniel Bennett, who goes by Coco. Trevor prefers unconventional names, and Hannah wants to honour her late grandmother, Ruth Katherine Ally.
- Paul and Seth Westwood are adopting for the third time. Their adopted daughter is a 5 year old who has requested to change her current name, Topanga Stephanie, since doesn't fit her and is funny to other kids in her class. The couple have three other children - twins named Oliver Cole and Altway James and a son named Corbin Dean. They want a name with the same vibe as their sons' names but also want to keep their daughter's initials the same as before.
- Tyler and Jenna Collins can't believe their luck. After four daughters, they are finally having their first son. Their daughters are Tessa Antoinette Rae Collins, Violeta Renee Ophelia Collins, Noella Solene Danielle Collins, and Makaila Therese Octavia Collins. Just like their daughters, they want their son to have two middle names. They really like literary and historical names, but also want the name to reflect how blessed they feel to have their son.
My responses will be in the comments. Thanks to anyone who decides to play! :)

2024.04.27 14:29 SnappinTurluh MOD Note: Why do I think Taylor and Travis' relationship is BS?
| Alright, let’s chat about why I think the relationship between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce is some straight up bullshit. I'm going to do my best to set aside the obvious fact that there is *zero* chemistry between them, IMO. First, let’s talk timeline. Although it’s a little messy, we have a rough idea of when this “relationship” started. Travis mentioned his affinity for Taylor on the July 26 New Heights podcast after attending the Eras tour on July 8. In Taylor’s POTY article, she stated they started hanging out right after that. However, Travis stated they started dating about a month before Taylor’s first game on September 24, so end of August. There’s a few week difference there. Whatever. Travis isn’t exactly known as an academic, so we’ll let his math skills slide. Now, I don’t know about you, but if I started dating the world’s biggest pop star, I wouldn’t be spending my time on IG liking pictures of other girls in bikinis, revealing outfits, etc., when I don’t even follow the girl I’m supposedly dating. Yes, I know that’s not a big deal, but stfu and let me build my case. In both the months of August and September, Travis continued to “like” photos of Coco Jones, Dixie D’Amelio, Megan Thee Stallion, and Madeline Hope, among many others. I have posted the photos below so you can judge for yourself. Does anyone think Swifties would have been ok with Joe liking these pictures while supposedly falling in love with Taylor? Of course not. Also, keep in mind that he met Kayla through IG flirting, so this is his MO. Here are some of the photos Travis liked while he was supposedly courting Taylor: https://preview.redd.it/u5s205bs1ywc1.jpg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2ce6fbc23bd52d0adc11bf33362c90b0dabdad38 21 year old Dixie D'Amelio... August 29, nearly a month after they began dating, according to Taylor. According to reports, Travis met Coco Jones at the ESPYs on July 12 and followed her after they met, and then proceeded to like nearly every one of her photos in the weeks following. (Coco didn't follow him back and apparently wasn't interested in him.) Additionally, he took Megan Thee Stallion as his date to the CMT Music Awards in April, so it's *definitely* a little strange to like photos from a girl you took on a date to an awards show while supposedly dating Taylor. Moving on. Taylor started attending NFL games. You cannot underestimate the value of free press. This is why pap walks are so important, and this is why so many celebrities (including Taylor) coordinate them ahead of time. They understand the value of free press, especially when a celebrity has a project coming out. As Taylor started to attend the games, the attention grew, and grew, and grew to the point where the NFL commentators began talking about it, Swifties were buying tickets just to potentially see her at games, the NFL began highlighting her attendance, and news outlets around the world reported on the supposed romance. The Sports Business Journal reports: “After winning the Super Bowl in February and Taylor Swift’s heart last fall (via her relationship with TE Travis Kelce), the Chiefs rose to the top of CreatorIQ's 2023 NFL earned media leaderboard, generating an estimated $316.6 million in digital earned media value (EMV), reports SBJ’s David Broughton. The number of sponsored and non-sponsored social media posts mentioning the Chiefs grew 349% over calendar year 2022. The team's top EMV-driver was ESPN (@espn on Instagram), with $33.6 million EMV via 577 posts. People Magazine (@people), Entertainment Tonight (@entertainmenttonight), and E News (@enews) powered a collective $20.4 million EMV. Taylor Swift has appeared at 12 Chiefs games since Sept. 24 and was responsible for extensive social conversation, with #TravisKelce and #TaylorSwift prompting a respective $30 million and $27.2 million in value. However, most of the team’s momentum stemmed from its Super Bowl victory in February, when the Chiefs netted $74.2 million that month. MLB, MLS, the NHL and the PGA of America are among CreatorIQ's sports clients.” (https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Articles/2024/01/30/taylor-swift-kansas-city-chiefs-super-bowl-earned-media-value) Additionally, CBS reports there was a 400% spike in Travis’ jersey sales while StubHub stated there was a 3x demand for Chiefs home game tickets. And, a poll commissioned by LendingTree stated: “20% of millennials and 24% of Gen Z'ers said the Berks County native's "influence" is making them care about football.” (https://www.cbsnews.com/philadelphia/news/taylor-swifts-massive-influence-from-nfl-viewership-to-sales-both-big-and-small/) So what did that actually mean? It meant Taylor Swift was (and is) a cash cow for anything she touched, including a shit ton of ad revenue. When viewership increases, companies pay more for ads during that program. From Travis to the NFL, and even the small businesses who made Taylor’s jewelry and other swag, Taylor brings in the bucks. Additionally, Taylor was seen multiple times drinking Travis-endorsed products at Chiefs games such as Zen Water and Casa Azul. Coincidence? Perhaps. But unlikely, IMO. I suspect that was done out of contractual obligation or to strengthen Travis' future endorsement deals with those products. Here are some relevant photos: https://preview.redd.it/u0jtupif2ywc1.jpg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dfac3fcc1b03206c7ea1d1ea369443c8fc54ba04 https://preview.redd.it/7iu4ncvg2ywc1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=07d9d1731d7318c79a6ddb36f8f0a2fea0ceceda https://preview.redd.it/98zo5mkj2ywc1.jpg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5d62169ceb9194992a63dbf761e0d4a982d97c36 https://preview.redd.it/cc8dmvgk2ywc1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5ed0b9a394a0a6d4f782bcbbdc2c68ba314d4c43 Now, thanks to the tracking of Taylor’s jet, we’ve had a pretty good idea of just how much Taylor and Travis spent together during the early months of their relationship. And….it wasn’t much. In fact, it appeared that Taylor would arrive shortly before the game and leave shortly after the game for the first few months of their relationship. The reality is we saw *very* few photos of them publicly together. I know Swifties claim that Chiefs fans in Kansas City leave Travis alone, but you will never convince me that the most popular couple in the world was able to spend a significant amount of time together in public and not *one* person managed to share a photo of them out and about. (That car photo doesn’t count because that was likely planned) And yes, I know Taylor was touring and Travis had games, but we saw plenty of pap walks from Taylor alone or with friends in New York when she could have been with Travis. She wasn’t. Fortunately for Tavis shippers, they’ve been spending more time together recently. Good for them. Additionally, let’s call a spade a spade. Both Taylor and Travis have *very* different types than the person they are currently with. Travis’ most recent exes, Maya Benberry (who says Travis cheated on her), Kayla Nicole, and possibly Zuri Hall are African American, while Taylor’s exes have been skinny white guys. Now I’m not saying your tastes can’t change, but doesn’t that seem very *convenient*? And it’s become apparent Travis has an interest in the entertainment industry. He’s already hosted one reality show (Catching Kelce) and is hosting another show (no doubt as a result of this relationship). And he apparently wants to take his Kelce Jam music festival around the country. With Taylor’s help, of course. Additionally, Travis and Jason’s New Heights podcast has become one of the most popular podcasts in the world, in large part because of the Swift fanbase tuning in. (Oh that sweet, sweet ad revenue.) So let’s recap and connect the dots. Travis publicly announces he’s interested in Taylor, Taylor’s team gets in touch (according to Travis) to set things up, they quickly become the world’s hottest couple during a Chiefs winning season and while Taylor is releasing multiple albums and is on a world tour, sales of everything from Chiefs tickets to merchandise spike, viewership spikes, Taylor is exposed to a new audience consisting of tens of millions of people while Travis and the NFL manage to bring in hundreds of thousands (if not more) of new fans to watch or attend games. And you want me to believe this is entirely organic? Fuccccccccccck no. “But wait!” Swifties will say. “Taylor is a billionaire! She doesn’t need any free press!” Theoretically, sure. If she was ready to retire. But Taylor is known for wanting to break records and sell more albums than anyone else. Do you really think she would turn down hundreds of millions in free press and potentially hundreds of thousands of new fans for just showing up at a game a few hours a week? Absolutely not. This is the same lady whose merch costs pennies on the dollar to make yet charges 80 bucks for a poorly made cardigan with upside down patches. Taylor didn’t become a billionaire by passing up opportunities to make even more money. And if Taylor didn’t care about making money, why doesn’t she radically cut merch and ticket costs? She won’t and she doesn’t because she is the Queen of Capitalism. Here is what I believe happened. Taylor’s team saw an opportunity for her to create America’s sweetheart couple. The pop star and football pro in a whirlwind romance. What’s not to love about that? Especially knowing that the relationship would generate even *more* interest in Taylor’s brand during the most crucial time in her career so far, in the midst of releasing re-records, the Eras tour movie, and on a worldwide tour. Oh, and a brand new album (that turned out to be a love letter to Matty Healy). So she took it. She set aside her craving for skinny white dudes and traded it in for an overweight, hairy, popular football player. In exchange, Taylor would increase her chances of breaking those records, selling those albums, and becoming even more untouchable. While Travis saw his earning potential rise exponentially. Jersey sales skyrocketed. Endorsement deals rolled in. Career opportunities were presented. Ad revenue was generated. And everyone in their orbit financially benefitted. EVERYONE. Where do I see things going from here? I honestly have no idea. Although I call the relationship “fake” a lot, they obviously enjoy each other’s company enough to spend time together. But this relationship isn’t natural, and there’s *a shit ton* of pressure on both sides to keep the money printer printing. That may very well be enough to keep this façade moving forward. But at some point, I believe Taylor will say enough is enough and recognize how oversaturated she's becoming and how this entire relationship is just. not. worth. it. Especially given Travis' immaturity and anger issues. And no offense to Swifties (not that I give a shit about ya’ll) but if you can honestly listen to TTPD and think she’s happy with Travis, you’re not listening to her lyrics. Maybe that’s why she called you vipers and retweeted a review calling you morons? I’m certain I’ve left a few things out. If there’s something I missed, please say it in the comments. But I hope this answers a lot of the “Why do you think their relationship is fake” questions I get. As always, STAY MAD, SWIFTIES! 2024.04.12 16:37 aang721 Sónar 2024 - New to techno looking for Hard Techno + Must-see acts to broaden our horizons
Hey guys, me and my friend have just confirmed a trip to Barcelona this June, we're excited but relatively new to the techno scene.
Would anyone mind listing the can't miss acts aswell as the "hard/harder" techno acts? We appreciate good minimal techno and the variety of subgenres associated with techno, but hard techno is definitely something we're enjoying at ton at the moment. Right now my favourites techno artists are
DJ Gigola, Paul Kalkbrenner, Amelia Lens, Boys Noize, I hate Models, Brutalismus, FOSS, VTSS, Aaron Hibell, Catz and Dogz, horsegiirl, Boris Brejcha. I know you guys will probably cringe at this list but I like I said we're relatively new and open to experience the variety of techno that Sonar has to offer.
Maybe to give you a better sense of my taste profile heres some of my favorite electronic artists of all time/at the moment not associated with Techno;
deadmau5, Zeds Dead, Skrillex, Nero, Kaytranada, Four Tet, Romy, the xx, Fred Again, Mau P, Chase and Status, Rusko, Sammy Virji, Chris Lake/Anti-Up, Nia Archives, Ratatat, Moderat, Mura Masa, Porter Robinson, 100 Gecs, Snow Strippers Any feedback would be appreciated, we're super open to explore the new sounds the Sonar has to offer, we're from Canada so our techno seen is very underdeveloped and I haven't been exposed to techno that often throughout my 10 years or so going to shows/fests.

2024.04.06 18:10 throwawaytempest25 Why is everyone been accusing BB Canada 12 for sexism and racism when they should be mad at the bad gameplay? And why are people misconstruing the racial issues in the US seasons to justify it?
Canada first and the bad gameplay let's get some things out of the way
- Forming an all guys, girls, female, male, whatever alliance is not a bad thing as long as the people themselves are using it to be discriminatory through their gameplay or behavior.
- Bad gameplay doesn’t mean the gameplay can’t be entertaining.
- This game involves social manipulation and while we can get mad at people for how they blame, as long as they aren’t awful, they’re allowed to say and be judged by their fellow houseguests, even if we don’t agree with everything they say.
- Big Brother needs to cast more Asian people, Spanish people, and more types of people in general: not just race, but age, maturity, regions, and different places for casting. Canada’s been better at this than US. We don’t need just one or two tokens for a season, and Big Brother US was accused for a while for regurgitating the same types in cast so much so 23-25 was a breath of fresh air, and it allows for new dynamics.
- Canada needs to do an All Star season. Agreed. Us needs a second good All Star season.
- Issues with the gameplay has nothing to do with who these people are outside of the house. A lot of people are falling into this trap.
So the big talking point is Hot Chocolate: (Avery, Lexus, Kayla, Anthony, Spicy). They’re not the only alliance, there’s the Directors (Anthony, Avery, Elijah/GOOSE, Kayla, Lexus, Matthew, Victoria), Anthony and Vic have their agreement meant, the Big Sisters (which has 7 women, two of which are gone), and Hot Chocolate and the Big Sisters Alliance are apparently racist and sexist bigots. I don't get where most of these complains are coming from.
- Anthony and Victoria are running the game, but it’s not because anyone who’s not black is going after them: Anthony’s whole strategy is forming a small collective group to take control, have pawns in the alliance as shields he manipulates to help him go after all the other people going after him. The problem is he has Spicy in the house. Everyone’s targeting Anthony not because he’s black, but because he’s one of the most dominant and social strong Big Brother players in Canada (depending on who you ask), but they don’t realize he’s working with Spicy, and Spicy’s just a bad game player stretching herself trying to play the middle:
- He even said the former part himself with his goodbye speech. Janine, Donna, and Dinis were all targeting him (rightfully so, he is the big bad of the season). Bayleigh is going after him, and most of the Hot Chocolate alliance realize half of the time they’re doing what he wants them to do. Even Todd, the person people think is this braindead idiot (being absent minded at times doesn’t make you an idiot) figured this out, that’s why Anthony was worried Todd would put him up over Vivek.
- And no, when I call Anthony the villain the season, I don’t mean he’s some jerk spouting slurs or joining some nationalism rally. A good reality tv villain is either entertaining, does stuff to make people want to get them evicted, and is at least strategic enough to get buy the game while aggravating the people trying to get him out. Anthony being arrogant is not the same thing as saying “down with all white people.”
- And trust me, I don’t like when Big Brother players steam roll a season either. BB19 would have been the worst season for me had Josh not gotten Paul out and BB22 was a boring steamroll with the only drama being toxic. I don’t like the starstruck mentality the cast has with Anthony and Victoria, but I’m at least glad most of them are wisen up or realizing they’re being played. Goose was right, Spicy V was trying to make him target Matthew and Lexus, she’s just spinning to Kayla and Avery like she did nothing wrong even though it’s her fault.
- But Victoria and Avery said “hot chocolate needs to get the marshmallows out of the horse?” Guys, they’re an alliance called Hot Chocolate….don’t some people put marshmallows inside their hot coco when they drink it? It was supposed to be a pun.
- “But didn’t Hannah from Big Brother US 23 call Brent a cracker?” Here’s what she said. “Even though he thinks he’s all that and a bag of chips, he’s barely a cracker, so…get it together!”
- Like we’re getting mad at black players for making food puns? That’s almost as dumb as when BB21 Analyse thought that eggplants were made with eggs.
- In fact, speaking of Spicy, her goal is to get rid of whoever’s targeting her, but now the girls are trying to make her take down Anthony’s shields, which is actually smart because he’ll be forced and outnumbered to work with them. Game wise, them taking Matt out to make Lexus and Anthony stay more loyal fits even if personally, it’s messed up they’re trying to take out the people they’re working with.
- The issue is with her HOH reign and with them trying to get out Dinis. She got mad at Donna for talking with Tom the same way the girls are mad with Lexus with Matthew, but instead of getting rid of Tom to make Donna loyal even though Donna wouldn’t have betrayed them, she backdoored her own number and all of them realized how stupid it was while Anthony’s cackling in the background encouraging her.
- That’s what led to her and Avery talking about getting rid of Donna with the hot chocolate line. Donna’s not in the Hot Chocolate alliance!
- There are also people on the sub saying it was sexism that caused Dinis to get evicted. Um…no Dinis got targeted BY THE PERSON WHO HE SAVED! Bayleigh tried to save him and the drama with Elijah mad at her only happened because while she was happy to be off the block, she didn’t want Dinis to go home through that! That's not sexism, that's bad gameplay!
US and the racial hypocrisy So if anyone’s saying Hot Chocolate’s racist, let me remind you all of what was said on the most racist season of Big Brother. You can watch it for yourself. If you're too lazy to watch, here's a supercut of the racist statements said on Big Brother 15:
- Talking about an asian contestant saying to make fried rice
- calling getting rid of two black people “black on black crime”
- speaking in a blaccent to mock another contestant whose clothes and bed they touched
- calling a black contestant an Aunt Jemina
- saying Cadence/Monee/Libra are all the same personality being annoying as s**t and are tokens for their respective season.
- making fun of the gay guy
- actually saying the n word
- making fun of someone for being biracial and not knowing if they’re white
- “girls are superficial c*nts
- “she has no merits to be her because she’s a black chick,”
- comparing the only asian contestant to Kim Jun-Um
If anyone in Big Brother Canada 12 has said anything similar to this, valid. But no one has, yet.
But what about Kyle from BB24. Didn't he get unfairly villified for something that he correctly observed while Taylor was some massive racist who used her skin color to win the game? No. - Context if you didn't watch. From winner to first evicted:
- Winner and Runner Up: Taylor (black/f), Monte (black/m),
- Jury: Turner (white/m), Brittany (white/f), Alyssa (white/f), Michael (white/m), Terrance (black/m), Kyle (white/m), Joseph (Arab/m), Jasmine (black/f), Indy (Brazillian/f)
- Pre Jury: Daniel (white/m), Nicole (asian/f), Ameerah (black/f), Pooch (white/m), Paloma (white/f) walked
- All of the girls formed an alliance without Taylor and Nicole because they saw them talking with the guys with Paloma spreading rumors Taylor was this terrible person even though she talked with the guys to get intel on the guys, and Pooch spreading certain ideas about her “blowing up ”when she found out, and she just cried because she didn’t do anything to those people.
- Kyle found out his showmance was in an opposing alliance that left out the guys in his alliance so him and Joseph, recruited Taylor with Michael, Brittany, Monte, and Turner to form the Leftovers and get out Ameerah, Nicole, and Daniel one by one to get rid of the other members and stop the people bullying her.
- Taylor said she would never put a POC on the block…that’s not true. She said she didn’t want to put another black woman on the block, but she was okay with her alliance members doing it for her. That’s why she targeted Indy (Brazilian), Terrance (who was also black and hated her), Jasmine (said person who hated her even though Taylor wanted to be friends with her).
- Kyle was a recruit who saw BB23 and assumed there’d be another Cookout, but the goal for the Cookout was to get a first black winner outside of Celebrity season, not to hate on the non-white people they befriended and even cried for.
- It makes sense to an outsider to be worried about it, but the issue was that he weaponized it for game reasons that didn’t even make sense.
- He assumed Taylor, Monte, Indy, Jasmine, and Joseph were all working together and told Terrance Joseph created the Leftovers (even though he was the founder) to get Terrance to vote out the others and work with Turner, Alyssa, and Terrance to target them after the house turned back to normal.
- Also, Terrence and Taylor were nominated every other week, Ameerah was evicted because he brought in Taylor to form the Leftovers and they voted her out, Jasmine and Terrence hated Taylor, and he assumed Joseph and Indy were working together because they were minority figures despite the fact around the same time he said that, Taylor put Indy and Terrance on the block: Indy said she wanted to throw hot soup on Taylor for no reason and Terrance actively tried to get rid of Taylor numerous times. He called Monte, who was ride or die for him “the villain of the season,” since week 1, even though Monte wanted to take him and Kyle.
- Kyle isn’t a bad person, the sane members of the Big Brother know this, and he almost won America’s Favorite Player and most people think he’s a good player, but everyone agrees he let his paranoia get the better of him.
- What Michael and Brittney did made it look like opportunists, agreed, but Kyle told them he was worried about another Cookout. Both of them tried to talk him out of those because it wouldn’t be fair to judge and it wouldn’t make sense.
- Also, no one is bringing up the fact that they saved that because Kyle gave into those thoughts and made Turner put Taylor on the block. The plan was to backdoor Michael, but since he won the POV, they were going to put up Monte, someone who was closer to Kyle.
- In fact when you take race out of the equation, Kyle essentially turned his back on his alliance because of his paranoia, and when they all found out about it, all of them got rightfully upset and pointed out they weren’t going to turn on him in the first place! He destroyed what he built and the people in the alliance had the right to vote him out when he got put up as a replacement nominee That’s how Big Brother works! Why would you want to keep someone in the game if they backstabbed you.
- And Taylor’s 8-1 win was fair. She explained her game and her situation to the jury, and even before the speech she had locked in votes. Michael said he vote for her and was her ally, Brittany was her friend, she had showmance with Joseph, she bonded with Alyssa, she made sure to make amends with Jasmine and Indy so they left with a good impression of her the weeks they got evicted. Terrance voted for Taylor because of peer pressure (he was a coward who went with the crowd), I though Kyle would’ve voted for Monte, and Turner voted for Monte cuz he thought she’d win. There’s no DEI in having to convince people to give you money.
- So stop with this nonsense.

2024.03.24 22:15 katyaslonenko "Bloody Bijou" (About the significance of the color red)
I think Bijou Watkins will die in the next book because she mostly wears red and has been compared to Charlotte.
Okay, let me explain! :D I noticed how many times someone who wears red (or bright pink) in the series dies an unnatural death. It started with The Cuckoo's Calling:
- Lula wore "a little red knitted hat" the day she was adopted (per Bristow's words). We see her wearing a floor-length red dress again for a photo shoot with Duffield.
- Rochelle wore a bright pink coat, and her phone case was glittery pink.
It continued in the rest of the books:
- In Strike's dream in SW, Charlotte wears red. She's in red again in TRG: "Charlotte, though as beautiful as ever in her red slip dress, looks strangely blank and glassy-eyed". (We know what happens next.)
- In CoE's flashbacks, Brittany Brockbank is wearing a pink tutu while sitting in a pink room writing on pink paper. She didn't die, though - hence the color is light pink instead of bright red.
- In LW, a body was wrapped in a pink blanket. It's a horse, not a person, so it's pink again and not red.
- Joan wears a "frogged and quilted red dressing gown" in TB.
- Margot was wearing a red shirt on the day of her disappearance.
- In TRG, a man nicknamed Red Soles (after the red soles of his shoes) is pushed under a train.
Here's what Bijou wears: a
bright pink dress at the christening, a
red bra when she texts Strike, and a
bright red coat with a
tight red dress underneath when Strike sees her for the last time. Basically, she wears red every time she's mentioned, apart from the time she wears peacock-blue - just like Charlotte in Strike's memories in SW.
Ilsa even directly compares Bijou to Charlotte:
"She'd make a nightmarish mother, nearly as bad as Charlotte Campbell." What kind of mother is Charlotte Campbell? A dead one.
I also noticed that the most common epithet used with Bijou's name is "
bloody".
"Bloody Bijou" - that's how we first hear her name in Chapter 2. (Repeated again in Chapter 13 -
"He's slept with bloody Bijou Watkins!" and Chapter 16 -
"I don't want him paying child support to bloody Bijou Watkins"). This, I think, is not very noteworthy in itself - Ilsa called Madeline
"this bloody woman", too - but together with Charlotte parallels and persistent association with red, it might mean something.
__________
To prove (or disprove) my theory, I searched the books for all the occasions when a character wears red, has red details upon themselves, or is seen in a red interior. I excluded the real-life interiors like pubs and restaurants and focused only on fictional ones.
I discovered this pattern: characters associated with red are either
red herrings,
key witnesses, or even
murderers. And the more red we see in a scene, the more important the clue—as if in Rowling's own Hot and Cold game!
Here are some examples of red hints here and there:
- Pink-overalled Lechsinka tells (or, mimes) exactly what designer clothing items were delivered to Lula and Deeby Mack.
- Vashti's shop assistant who overheard Lula has pink hair.
- Marlene Higson wears a pink top. She tells Strike how (where) Lula was searching for her birth father.
- Tassel's red lips, Kathryn Kent's red hair, red eczema on Chard's hands, red wine that Waldegrave drinks. They are all suspects, red herrings, or important witnesses.
- Orlando wears fluffy pink socks. She has a crucial piece of evidence on her.
- In the photo on the party's website, Flick's hair is blond with pink edges but is bright red at the time of the LW events, reflecting her increased involvement in Jimmy's shenanigans.
- Pink flamingoes on the walls of the Athorns' bathroom hint that something important is hidden in the flat.
- Red-haired Nicole Crystal wears pink for the photos. She's a key figure in the Anomie case.
- The pink curtain over Zoe's window tells us that she's a key figure, too.
- Henry Worthington-Fields is red-haired and wears a red tie. His importance: knows Fiona Brewster.
- A rectangular red biscuit tin full of Polaroids.
- Barry Saxon wears a tight red checked shirt. His importance: knows the killer.
And here is what happens when there's suddenly A LOT of red around:
- When Strike interviews Heather, Laing as Roy opens the door wearing a scarlet robe. His complexion is described as "ruddy" (he's also dabbing at his eyes so they are red). He's an ex-firefighter (or so he says). We don't know it in this scene, but he also owns a red and black motorbike, and he's added red blood drops to his yellow rose tattoo. Later in the book, he wears a red and black check jacket (in that scene where Robin falls into curry). Yet later in the book, his face is sprayed red by Robin's rape alarm. In flashbacks, young Laing is red-haired. In more recent years, he had psoriatic arthritis that made him look extra red.
See how JKR paints the murderer in different reds? Same in Troubled Blood. That's how Janice's apartment is described when Strike goes there the first time:
- "Predominantly red, the carpet was decorated in a scarlet, swirling pattern, on top of which lay a cheap crimson Turkish rug". Her front door is dark red.
_________
Finally, I wanted to list all the occasions when someone was wearing red but didn't die or happened to be an essential witness:
- Al drives a red Alfa Romeo.
- Coco's hair is red.
- Judith the divorce lawyer wears a red coat.
- Robin receives a red purse from Pat for her birthday.
- Niels wears a dark pink shirt. Midge wears a dark red tuxedo.
- The new office sofa is red.
_________
But you see, although there are some benign red items in the series, there is also abundant evidence that the color red signifies a victim, a killer, or a red herring.
Where does bloody Bijou Watkins, a woman in red, fit in this triad, do you think?
And another, Bijou-unrelated thought: Gary Topley was a Red Cap, and he was killed (bloodily). Strike was a Red Cap, and he killed someone (earning his "life-saving medal" as a result). What about Uncle Ted, a former Red Cap? I'm curious if there's something there.
