Radio

2024.05.19 00:41 MorganRose78 Radio

Alex always had a thing for vintage electronics. So when he spotted an old, dusty radio at the flea market, he knew he had to have it. The stall owner, a withered old man with piercing eyes, warned him about the radio. He claimed it was cursed, that its previous owners all met mysterious fates. Alex laughed it off as a ploy to jack up the price, but the old man let it go for a mere five dollars, almost as if he was eager to be rid of it.
Back in his apartment, Alex placed the radio on his bedside table. It was a beautiful piece, with a wooden casing and an intricate dial. He plugged it in, expecting nothing more than static. But to his surprise, the radio hummed to life, the dial lighting up with a soft, eerie glow. The tuning knob moved on its own, settling on a station that played an old, melancholic tune.
That night, Alex woke up at 3:33 a.m., his room filled with the crackling sound of static. The radio had turned itself on. He stumbled out of bed and switched it off, blaming a faulty switch. But the next night, it happened again, and the night after that. Each time, the clock read 3:33 a.m.
One night, as he lay in bed, the radio switched on, and through the static, he heard a faint whispering. He strained to listen, and though he couldn't make out the words, the tone was unmistakably pleading, desperate. His skin crawled, and he quickly turned the radio off.
Determined to get to the bottom of it, Alex did some research and found that the radio was from the 1930s. It had belonged to a family that had perished in a fire, their home burning down in the middle of the night. The only survivor was a young girl, who had been found clutching the radio in the charred remains of her bedroom. She never spoke again, and when she passed away years later, the radio was sold at an estate sale.
The more he discovered, the more uneasy Alex became. The nightly disturbances continued, and he began to feel a presence in his apartment. Shadows seemed to move on their own, and he often felt a cold breath on the back of his neck.
One particularly dark night, the radio turned on with a deafening screech. The static was louder than ever, and through it, he heard the voice of a child crying for help. His blood ran cold as he realized the voice was calling his name. Panicked, he tried to unplug the radio, but it seemed fused to the socket. The room grew colder, and he felt an invisible hand grip his arm, freezing him in place.
The voice grew louder, more frantic. "Help me, Alex! Help me!" It was as if the spirit was in the room with him, trapped between worlds. Gathering his courage, he shouted, "What do you want from me?"
The room fell silent, the static stopping abruptly. Then, the dial on the radio began to spin wildly, finally stopping on a station that played the old, melancholic tune once more. But this time, there were words sung by a hauntingly beautiful voice:
"In the night so cold and deep, A soul lost, in shadows it weeps. Find the fire, find the light, Free me from this endless night."
Alex understood. The spirit was bound to the radio, reliving the night of the fire over and over. He knew what he had to do. He took the radio to the place where the family's home once stood, now an empty, desolate lot. As he stood there, the radio began to burn in his hands, a fire igniting from within it.
He dropped it to the ground and watched as it was consumed by flames. He could hear the distant echoes of a child's laughter, free at last. The fire died down quickly, leaving nothing but ashes. The presence he had felt lifted, and the air seemed lighter.
From that night on, the disturbances ceased. The haunted radio was no more, and the lost spirit was finally at peace. Alex never bought another vintage item again, but he never regretted helping a lost soul find its way to the light.

2024.05.19 00:29 MorganRose78 The House

It was a cold, dreary evening when Sarah moved into the old, abandoned house at the edge of town. The locals whispered about it, but Sarah, newly divorced and eager for a fresh start, paid no mind. It was a steal, after all.
The first night, Sarah noticed the house had a peculiar chill that seemed to seep into her bones. She wrapped herself in blankets and dismissed it as the building’s age. As she drifted to sleep, she heard a faint, rhythmic tapping. It sounded like someone gently knocking on the walls, moving through the house. Tap. Tap. Tap. She reasoned it was probably just the old pipes.
Over the next few days, the tapping persisted, growing louder and more insistent. Sarah tried to track the source but found nothing. Each night, it grew closer to her bedroom. One evening, determined to get to the bottom of it, she stayed up, flashlight in hand. The tapping started as usual, but this time, it seemed to be accompanied by a whisper, almost too faint to hear.
“Let me in…”
Sarah’s heart pounded as she strained to listen. The whispers grew louder, mingling with the tapping. She followed the sounds to the basement door. Mustering her courage, she opened it and descended the creaky steps.
The basement was dark and musty. As she shone her flashlight around, she saw nothing unusual—until the beam landed on an old, dusty mirror leaning against the far wall. The tapping was now a pounding, echoing in her ears. She approached the mirror, her breath visible in the freezing air.
In the mirror’s reflection, she saw herself—yet something was off. Her reflection smiled, though Sarah was not. The mirror-Sarah’s eyes glowed with a malevolent gleam. Frozen in terror, she watched as her reflection raised a hand and began to knock on the glass.
“Let me in…”
The reflection’s voice echoed in the basement. Sarah stumbled backward, tripping over an old, discarded chair. Her reflection pushed harder against the glass, the surface of the mirror warping as if it were a liquid barrier.
“No!” Sarah screamed, scrambling to her feet. She turned and fled up the stairs, slamming the basement door behind her. The pounding continued, louder and more frantic. She knew she couldn’t stay there.
Sarah grabbed her keys and fled the house, never looking back. She drove through the night, not stopping until she reached her sister’s place in the next town. She never spoke of what happened, but she couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched.
Months later, the old house was sold again. The new owners, a young couple, moved in, eager to start their life together. The house seemed perfect—until the wife noticed a strange, rhythmic tapping on their first night. Tap. Tap. Tap.
“Let me in…”

2024.05.18 23:47 Only_Unbeyond_32449 I just don't get it

My friend recommended me a first time yakuza game that being "like a dragon ishin" since it was recently added to gamepass He said I would like it since I'm really into action games and since he knows I really liked ghost of tsushima when I played it a couple years ago. He loves the yakuza series and so i decided to give it a shot I watched a couple of reviews and both were very positive of the game But when I started it up and played a couple of hours I just really wasn't impressed at all, I was borderline annoyed. One of the reviews said it played like sekiro, so that guy clearly never played sekiro. I feel I should mention I play on an xbox one S And I really don't know if that has anything to do with my experience other than graphics. First off the general gameplay out of combat is very dated Its slow and clunky to move around Making my character run out of breath and him taking a second to get back to it is borderline criminal (though I understand how that might add to the "charm" of the game) I can't even walk in a circle when move my analog 360⁰ I'm able to make like 8 more circles before my character actually turns around due to an animation that plays when you turn Just everything about it feels incredibly dated despite it coming out recently It feels like a low end ps3 game and reminds me of shenmue 😭 This leaks into the combat as well it's very slow and clunky. My character is just frozen in place when doing a combo unless I actually make it connect first, there's 0 momentum to it and there very clear input delay that makes it hard to properly react to enemies attacks and the fact you're locked for 0.5 seconds after an evade. Id expect a lock on feature in a game like this but because I have to deliberately line up my body with an enemy and be standing within a foot of them to hit them it's makes the combat not very enjoyable. And finally the graphics, they're TERRIBLE hence why I brought up my console because it might just be that. The base settings were to prioritize graphics and it still looked blurry and the textures were muddy and blended into eachother. Once I switched to prioritize gameplay NOTHING CHANGED AT ALL. My games rocking a solid 30 fps (unacceptable when you are prioritizing gameplay) I feel like if anything they shouldve just made this game a next gen only if it's this terrible on last gen consoles I really wanna stick with it, I want to like it I dont wanna be a hater especially when everyone is always talking about how good the yakuza games are I just don't get it though, what am I missing?? Am I just a lost cause for this franchise??

2024.05.18 23:12 wampyricspirit I need advice

I work in a warehouse and my job is to stack cases onto pallets and wrap them to be shipped to the company’s stores. As I was setting a case down on my pallet yesterday, I strained a muscle in my back and the pain was so bad that it took my breath away and it honestly felt like I was stabbed. I can’t bend over or twist without being in pain and my job requires me to be able to move and do those sorts of things. Even when I’m sitting or laying down I’m in pain.
My employer sent me home and was able to set up an appointment with the worker’s comp doctor the next day (today) and I told him everything about my injury and I didn’t leave out any details. I told him that I would rate my pain 9/10 and I physically cannot do my job. He proceeded to do his “examination” by testing to see if I had any numbness or tingling in my limbs but didn’t bother to test my physical range of motion. He also didn’t check if I had any muscle knots, a spasm, etc. He then insists that it isn’t a serious enough injury to keep me out of work based on everything he sees and what I’ve told him thus far. So he cleared me to go back tomorrow and recommended that I just take ibuprofen, apply ice/heat, and work through the pain until the injury resolves itself. I wanted to explode but I didn’t argue with his judgement and left my appointment.
There’s no way in hell I can perform my job without being in excruciating pain and potentially making my injury worse and my employer doesn’t offer any light duty. Where do I go from here? What do I tell my employer? Can I get a second opinion from another doctor?

2024.05.18 22:57 Valhallas_Dragon Human Human Fruit Model: Amaterasu

(based on the MHA Quirk: “One For All”, this is the upgraded form of a previous Devil Fruit I’ve made called the “Charge Charge Fruit”)
Abilities: the user gains the ability to summon Amaterasu’s armor (a Battlesuit which will adjust to the user’s body, shape and size when equipped), the user can also (without transforming) store energy gained from sunlight within their body with every breath they take, with this power the user can unleash devastating physical attacks which emit wind blasts upon release, this energy also allows the user to amplify their own body with the energy they have gathered to increase muscle mass, while in “Amaterasu form” the user gains access to 6 new abilities,
Black Star Whip: the user can conjure a series of “Sunspots” from their hands which the user can manipulate and reshape into a series of tendrils which grab hold of objects/enemies for various kinds of attacks or to rescue allies,
Levitation: the user possesses their own gravitational field which can “detach” the user from the earth’s gravity allowing the user to float through the air weightlessly,
World Sense: the user possesses the sun’s ability to “see the world”, this ability will warn the user of incoming danger via vibrations felt within the user’s head,
Exploding Fist: the user can absorb and store kinetic energy when they move around, this energy can be used to further boost the user’s attacks to go beyond their limits, (this also let’s them safely match their higher power output without drawbacks)
Dark Cloud: the user can absorb carbon into small spheres and use them as smoke bombs which release black smoke to cover the user if they try to escape,
Comet: the user can temporarily boost their own speed for up to 10 minutes at the cost of cutting their own speed in half for 10 minutes after the boost wears off,
Awakening: (Zoan Awakening; Enhanced Strength -Durability -Speed, accelerated healing, Awakened form),
Weaknesses: (standard devil fruit weaknesses), Power overload (if the user’s body isn’t strong enough to handle the immense power it can put a strain on the user, do permenant damage or even destroy parts of the user’s body as a side effect),

2024.05.18 21:47 xretailxslavex Couldn't speak randomly

32F, 240lbs, history of autoimmune disorders, non-smoker
I was in the car with my husband and I felt some weird tingly sensation in my throat, kinda felt like movement then I went to say "wait somethings wrong", but it came out pretty strained, raspy or not at all. It took a minute or two for my words to come out normal.
I was having a lot of anxiety over it, but I'm pretty sure breathing wasn't an issue, but I was freaking out so I can't be 100% certain on anything.
I used ketoconazole cream about 20 minutes beforehand. I've used it before. No other meds taken recently.
I have a dust mite allergy and cough up stuff every morning, I've also had an esophageal ulcer that I took meds for, I was pretty sure it was healed.
Wondering when I need to worry. I think I have a referral to an ENT, but he's booked out 6 months.

Into The Music S8 Episode 19 - Milky Way
╔⏤⏤⏤⏤╝❀╚⏤⏤⏤⏤╗
Hey everyone! I hope you all had an excellent week. Mine was pretty good, especially because I took a little break from doing album reviews. This break allowed me to recharge and appreciate some new music. But now, I'm back and bursting with excitement to share some fantastic tunes that have caught my attention. These new releases have been on repeat on my playlist, and I can't wait to discuss them with you. If you still need to listen to these tracks, I hope you discover some gems to add to your playlist. So, let's not waste any more time diving into the music and exploring what these talented artists have brought this week.

Other Releases of the Week:

Milky Way -Alice
This week, Alice released their last single as a seven-member group, and five members decided to leave the company. Fairy Tale opens up the single, bringing in some magical synths that blend well with the members' vocals, which I've always enjoyed. The bouncy vibe is something that works well for this group. The hook keeps pulling me back for more, as I've not gotten it out of my head since it was released. Milky Way is the title track for this comeback. Synths and a sweet melody open up the track, as the funky vibe fits well with the smooth vocals that the group delivers. The hook hits hard with the vocals and innocent vibe, which makes me sad that we will not get music from this group anymore. For a final release, this single is one I'll still be back to, even all the other stuff they have released during their time as Elris and Alice.

봄눈 - 10cm
10cm released an OST this week for Lovely Runner, which I've been watching each week. An acoustic guitar opens up the track, bringing in a sweet melody. The vocalist fits well with the vibe as his voice blends well with the piano and guitar melody. The hook has this sweet feeling that fits well with the spring season and the Drama it's a part of. We do get some strings that add to the overall melody. I'm not the most significant 10cm fan, but this tune is one I can see myself returning to a lot since it fits that style of music I like.

Where Is My House? - Jin Hwi PARK
This week, I discovered the indie single Jin Hwi Park, thanks to her new release. Acoustic guitar opens up the track, crafting the melody that you hear throughout. Jin Hwi has a sweet, delicate voice that blends well with this acoustic vibe. The instrumental is mostly a guitar with a tambourine in the background. We do get some drums during the second verse that bring this tune to life, making it a little more upbeat. I felt relaxed listening to this tune for the first time. At times, the instrumental reminds me of Wave to Earth, which helped pique my interest in this song.

바다님 - Yangbans
Indie rock band Yangbans is back with a new single I wasn't expecting. Synths and guitars open up the track, with percussion crafting the vibe and melody. The band's vocalist comes in with smooth vocals that work well with the instrumental. The synth blends well with the instrumental, adding to the vibe and delivering something different. One thing I love about this band is how everyone fits together in whatever they are playing or performing. This tune has an experimental vibe that works well for the band.

Algorithm - ITZY
ITZY is back with a new Japanese single that delivers two new tunes. The Algorithm opens up the track with a smooth vibe that doesn't sound like ITZY musically. The group performs a sweeter sound as the vocals fit well with the vibe. The hook is catchy, as it helped pull me back for more during the week. The chorus has this bouncy synth beat that adds to the overall vibe. I love the funky vibe during the verses as it breathes fresh air into the tune. Algorithm might be the most playful ITZY song I've ever heard. No Biggie is the B-side and was released before Algorithm. Synths open up the track with sweet vocals from the members that fit well with the backing track. The rapping we get is all right, but it only adds a little to the tune. The hook has vocal effects added to it, which felt weird to me at first, but I'm starting to like it more. The Algorithm single is a nice change of pace for the group, as it doesn't sound like they are yelling at you.

거친 하루- Son Yeji
Another indie singer I discovered was Son Yeji with her track Tough Days. A guitar opens the song, bringing in a spring vibe as the singer's sweet voice blends with the instrumental. I love how relaxing the vibe of the melody is. The innocent nature of the guitar adds to the vibe of the singer's voice. We do get a little bit of piano from time to time, which adds to the instrumental. I love the singer's voice. It made me deep dive into her discography. I can't wait to listen to this singer more, as I'm impressed with this indie release I found during my week.

ringringring - SURL (설)
SURL (설) is back with their second single of 2024. Percussion and guitars give the track a brighter, funky vibe. I love this band's vocals, as they work well with the instrumentation. The other band members do an excellent job playing their instruments. The hook is perfect for this tune as it adds to the vibe. The singer's performance is something that I love whenever I listen to this band. I find this new song something that fits wonderfully into the catalog of tunes. Now, if this song is greasing the band up for an album, I can't wait to hear more.

빛을 담아 너에게 줄게 Part. 2 - The Wind
The Wind is back with a part 2 to their song Sirius. I'm not the biggest fan of part 2's in music, but I want in with an open mind. The song opens up with a melody that reminds listeners of the original Sirius but gives this version its own vibe. The members of the group sang excellently and delivered some fire vocals that hit hard. The hook is catchy and bouncy, keeping that innocent sound that made me fall in love with the group. I love the group's overall performance, which fits the vibe wonderfully. I will say it almost sounded like the chorus was going to deliver the original vibe. I find this part 2 to be an excellent fit into the group's discography and one I'll be listening to a lot.

Non-Korean Releases of the Week:
Ain't No Love In Oklahoma (From Twisters: The Album) - Luke Combs
Luke Combs is back with a new single for the Twisters movie soundtrack. Guitars open up the track with a thumping percussion beat as Luke combs in with his deep voice, which made me like him in the first place. The vocal performance is packed with emotion, and I can't help but sing along during the hook. The instrumentation is smooth, blending well with the emotion that the singer brings to the table during his performance. The guitar solo is another addition that adds to the song, pulling me back for more.

Psycho Killer - Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus releases a Cover of Psycho Killer by Talking Heads. The production sounds like something Lady GaGa would do more than Miley. Miley's vocal performance is a little strange, but she works well with the instrumental, which surprised me. The verses have a lot of vocal effects added to Miley's voice. I don't mind all these effects, but I would like to hear a Raw vocal performance from Miley. I don't hate this cover; I need to get used to how strange this tune is. However, Miley does a great job with it.

Maid Sizyousyugi - TAKANE NO NADESHIKO
TAKANE NO NADESHIKO is back with a new single I've listened to a few times this week. The group continued with that cute sound that I had fallen in love with. The fast-paced guitars add to the instrumental, moving the tune forward. The vocals are cute, as always, and the members put on an excellent performance that pulls me back for more. The drumming is terrific, adding an energy to the tune that fits with the performance. The hook has a catchy vibe that pulled me back for more this week.

2024.05.18 20:18 Myk1984 "It's no surprise AH never called Dr. Michelle Jorden, the expert forensic pathologist, when you compare AH's testimony about the December 15th incident to Jorden's analysis."

Dr Jorden's expert testimony about the December 15th, 2015 incident from Disclosure of Expert Witnesses
Substance of Dr. Jorden's Opinion
Dr. Jorden will testify regarding the pathology of Amber's multiple injuries…Specifically, Dr. Jorden will testify that
(1) the injuries depicted in the photographs reviewed are consistent with Amber's description of the incidents of physical violence;
(2) Amber's description of her injuries is consistent with the type of injuries that would result from the recounted incidents of physical violence
_____________
AH'S DESCRIPTION OF THE DECEMBER 15TH INCIDENT
____________
Definitions provided by Dr Jorden
Blunt force trauma: physical trauma or impactful force to a body part resulting from an impact with a dull, firm surface or object. It is different from penetrating trauma, where an object pierces the skin.
Contusion: a region of injured tissue or skin in which blood capillaries have been ruptured. A contusion is a bruise.
Abrasion: rubbing or scraping of the surface layer of cells or tissues from the skin or from a mucous membrane.
______________
PHOTOGRAPHS REVIEWED BY DR JORDEN
Dr. Jorden considered the following photographs taken on December 16th -17th, 2015:
Photos taken on the 16th of December, 2015
Photo 1: 11:44 AM
Photo 2: 11:44 AM
Photo 3: 2:39 PM
Photo 4: 2:40 PM
Photo 5: 2:40 PM
Photo 6: 2:41 PM
Photos taken on the 17th December, 2015
Photo 7: 00:46 AM
Photo 8: 00:46 AM
Photo 9: 10:19 AM
Photo 10: 10:19 AM
Photo 11: 10:20 AM
ANALYSIS
Dr Jorden identified:
Dr. Jorden will opine that Amber's injuries from this event were caused by blunt-force trauma to the head.
The hairline abrasion appears to have been caused by an acute injury, which is consistent with Amber's description of events.
Not all abrasions result in swelling nor do they result in infection and the appearance of pus.
The photographs do not demonstrate evidence of traumatic alopecia; rather, the photographs show pink/red abraded areas in the scalp, and the hair follicles are intact.
_______________
AH'S TESTIMONY ABOUT THE PHOTOS
Photo 1: 11:44 AM
AH: It’s a few days later. My face is healing. (AH lied about when the photo was taken to explain the lack of injuries)
Photo 2: 11:44 AM
AH: I had a pretty gross bruise right in my head, my temple. Difficult to see it in this light, but I remember it was pretty ugly.
Photo 3: 2:39 PM
AH: This is my face with a busted lip, which is difficult to see in this picture, but my two black eyes, one is worse than the other…and my broken nose. (Dr Jorden only identified "a contusion under Amber's right eye", not "two black eyes". AH's lip injury doesn't appear until the following day, and Dr Jorden doesn't even mention AH's nose, let alone her "broken nose".)
Photo 4: 2:40 PM
AH: That's my face sometime after Johnny beat me up.
Photo 5: 2:40 PM
AH: This is my face sometime after.
Photo 6: 2:41 PM
EB: I'm just going to draw your attention to an area up here. What, if any, bruising did you sustain in that area? (EB drew big yellow circles on the photo around Amber’s “bruises” because there is nothing there to see)
AH: I had bruising on my temple, my chin, my neck, and the back of my head. I had swelling and pieces of my scalp...ripped, torn. They were gross, and pusey, but this is from the bruising around my temple from one of the blows. One of several blows. (None of the photos depict "bruising on AH's chin, neck, back of my head, or ripped/torn pieces of scalp)
Photo 7: 00:46 AM
AH: I think that's maybe that night or the next night after Johnny left me on the bed. (First appearance of lip injury. The lip is uninjured in photos 1-6)
Photo 8: 00:46 AM
EB: What’s portrayed on your lip?
AH: Well, he busted my lip when he punched me. It's bleeding in this picture. It kept reopening. You know, it's a mouth. Your lips move. (Streak of dry blood on the chin is for dramatic effect...wash your face Amber!)
Photo 9: 10:19 AM
AH: It's a picture of my bruised temple. Johnny had his hand on part of my face with my face down, and he was punching my head, repeatedly punching my head. That's what caused that bruise on my temple.
Photo 10: 10:19 AM
AH: This is my lip a few days later.
Photo 11: 10:20 AM
AH: That's my scalp with a chunk of it missing from when Johnny was dragging me by my hair. (Dr Jorden stated the photographs "do not demonstrate evidence of traumatic alopecia". But rather "pink/red abraded areas in the scalp and the hair follicles are intact".)
That doesnt line up with the testimony from AH who stated
"My head was bleeding from the ripped-out hair, chunks of hair on the floor, all over the place, actually. It was just all over the apartment.”
AH also testified that THIS PHOTO depicted “chunks of my hair that Johnny ripped out while dragging me and punching me”
Or Raquel Pennington's testimony
Q: What is this a picture of, Miss Pennington?
A: The picture is hair pulled back to show the abrasion on the scalp where hair has been removed.
Q: What is this a picture of, Miss Pennington?
A: It's a picture of a clump of Amber's hair on the black carpet in the bedroom, PH4, with my finger there to show the scale of the hair.
Q And how did you know that that was Amber's hair?
A: Hair had been ripped out of her head. This is the colour of her hair. It's her home.
_____________
It’s no wonder they scrapped calling Dr. Jorden to testify. After AH’s fictional fairytale of events, there is no way Dr. Jorden could testify in good conscience that the photos are consistent with AH’s description of events.

The source control N100 disposable respirator : Baianda EF600 NIOSH N100
Hello again,
Here's a normal sized review, unlike my previous exhaustive posts. It's about a - not commonly spoken - high filtration efficiency respirator. Hope you enjoy it.

Introduction

I'm happy to introduce you the only N100 source control disposable of this shape on the market : The Baianda EF600 respirator.
Disclaimer
I personally chose the models i was interested in, as i thought they may be very good alternatives in respiratory protection. For all my new and old reviews you see here, i pay for the service/logistics/products. The only exception was Uniqon. Uniqon back in the day, volunteered to send me the samples, when i asked for distributors to purchase their products. Since that company mainly supplied hospitals/industries and didn't participate in the consumer business, it was impossible to find them online. For the Baianda respirators, i paid for the two masks + shipping fees + customs + vat. Τhis is an unbiased review, but from the perspective of a mask enthusiast.

Certificates

Pricing and similar models

I purchased both N100 and KN100 disposables for 9.83$ each. Prices found in China and US, usually range for 18$-25$, for unknown reasons. Maybe, those were the 2020 marked up prices. There's also a Baianda OEM N100 disposable, the Parcil Safety DR04 N100. Similar disposable respirators from 3M, such as the 8233 N100, 8293 P100 and 8835+ ffp3 are listed equally high at ~10$. Many brands carry the same shape in different grades. For example, the Jinfuyu (JFY) 4301 P100 and a few more.
The competitors

Hands On

Unlike the 3M equivalents, the Baianda N100/KN100 respirators have already assembled the adjustable straps. Therefore, the product is ready for use, without wasting any time. The N100 version has the LOT number printed on the mask and the KN100 alternative the LA China sticker, that means the mask can be used by Chinese enterprises. The large external nose wire isn't as 'beefy' as it looks. It's easily bendable, but it doesn't play a major part, as the whole sealing job is done by the 'sticky' gasket. The inner gasket seals great around the face and closes any gaps, preventing any leakage. Companies that have similar 'sticky' gaskets, such as 3M, Makrite and others, will have an advantage fitting many different faces and providing high fit factors.
https://preview.redd.it/9u9drecn811d1.jpg?width=3993&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=04bd8ad27a0af01dc575d7eb6c4be50343116f8e
N100 EF600
The breathing resistance is - of course - higher than the common N95/KN95/ffp2 respirators, but the construction of the mask somehow prevents a heat built-up on the inside. This respirator is suitable in specific industrial and healthcare settings, for workers who have to deal with very high particle concentrations and at the same time the source control is important.
Cleaning the gasket and readjusting the super wide straps if necessary, may 'unofficially' make the mask reusable. Using the Baianda multiple times for short periods will likely justify it's price and purpose on a consumer perspective.
Unfortunately, i haven't used any of the similar competitors from 3M yet to compare the size, fit and comfort. One thing's for sure, there's no unvalved alternative for this shape and grade, as far as i know.
The inner gasket
Pros
- Provides the ultimate protection in disposable respirators, if it fits.
- The only source control disposable at this grade (N100).
- The sticky gasket used by Baianda, similar to other companies is something like a 'cheat', in a good way, to achieve a nearly guarantee seal on adult faces.
- Even if the respirator is non reusable, under certain conditions and after cleaning the gasket, it can be reused. The wide headstraps will remain tight after use.

Cons
- Price is very high on this respirator and this also applies to it's rivals.
- Accessibility is another issue, as there is limited availability in the US and only found in super high prices. The KN100 version in China was available at the JD platform, on their official Baianda store, similarly priced at ~ 18$ , but out of stock.
- Pressure drop in top grade disposables is higher than normal consumer grades and the EF-600 is not an exception.
- The problem with sticky gaskets is that they can become sweaty in hot weather. A big sealing advantage may result in some discomfort on the long term for this kind of shape, under certain circumstances.
The big nose wire

Fit Test Results

I was curious getting the Baianda respirator, for the fact that i get excellent results in disposables with sticky gaskets. Most of the time, regardless of mask shape, i have side leaks on the right side of my cheek and less often around the nose, usually on small/medium sizes. My face is on the large size, therefore, for most of the adult disposables , i pass the fit tests, if the dimensions are right. A correct size is more vital for the perfect seal, regardless the shape of the mask to pass a fit test, at least for my face.
The LOT of the respirator indicates that it was produced during 2020 and the expiration date on the package is on 8/2025.The overall fit factor for the N100 models was 8127 under the osha protocol. I didn't want to sacrifice a fit test for the KN100 model, since it looked identical from the outside. Here are the detailed results for the EF-600:
Exercise / Μodel Baianda EF600 N100
Normal Breathing 17171
Deep breathing 3821
Head Side to Side 26693
Head Up and Down 53906
Talking 3493
Grimace Excl. -
Bending over 7383
Normal breathing 18430
Overall ff 8127

Conclusion

Baianda is a serious company that mainly focuses in products for professionals on the industrial and healthcare safety. No coincidence NIOSH has given to them the N100 certification. Let's hope they can expand more in disposable respirators

2024.05.18 20:07 otay007 Mr. Weller’s Clinic

Being a natural skeptic, this is a story I never thought I’d be telling. I grew up reading those short, half-edited horror stories that were so popular on the internet, scaring myself out of sleep too many times to count as a kid. These days, I’m still too scared to fall asleep, just like I was when I was 11 reading stories on boards I had no business browsing. This time, though, it isn’t typed words on my aging laptop that have my heart unable to beat calmly in my chest. It isn’t the long traded campfire story that has the hairs on my neck standing in unease.
It’s the envelope sitting on my desk, taunting me as I glance at it from across the room. The top torn open haphazardly, its contents situated neatly against the worn wood grain.
It’s the words that are typed so neatly along the page, bringing back every foul memory I can conjure.
“Thank you for donating.
Come back and see us again soon,
Mr. Weller.”
~
The sun hung lazily in the sky, casting a golden hue over the endless river of asphalt stretching out before me. This highway, flanked by gnarled mesquite trees and sporadic billboards advertising the next southern baptist church, had become somewhat of a familiar friend over the years. It was the unofficial gateway between my life at college and my small hometown nestled on the border of Texas and Louisiana.
I adjusted my review mirror, catching a glimpse of my own tired reflection. Summer break was finally here and I had high-tailed it from the campus as soon as my last final exam hit my professor’s desk. Gone was the grueling cycle of exams, papers, and endless nights spent hunched over textbooks. Whoever said that the college years were the best of their life needed to find the nearest sharp object to take a seat on.
As I drove, the familiar scenery slipping by in a soothing blur, my phone rang, jolting me from my thoughts. The screen flashed “Mom”, causing the involuntary roll of my eyes.
“Hey, Mom, I’m on the road. What’s up,” I spoke into the phone, trying to keep the exasperation out of my voice.
”Hi, sweetheart! How close are you to home?” Her voice was warm and overly sweet, exactly the tone she used when she was about to ask for an inconvenient favor.
“Probably a few hours out. Why?”
“Perfect! Listen, can you do me a favor and pick up a case of beer for your dad? He invited his friends over tonight and I don’t have time to run to the store with all the cooking-,” she explained quickly, probably sensing my sigh of annoyance before I could even take a breath.
”Mom,” I interrupted evenly, “you do realize there are, like, zero places to stop for miles, right? The last couple hours are practically deserted.”
“I know, but most gas stations always have the kind your dad likes. Just stop at the next one you see, okay?”
I groaned internally, glancing at my half full gas gauge. I had filled up the tank this morning specifically so I wouldn’t have to stop once on the drive.
“Fine, I’ll see what I can do.”
”You’re the best,” Mom sighed in relief, her tone calm again. “Drive safe, honey.”
With that, she hung up, leaving me to the rhythmic drone of the road and my dusty second hand CD’s once again.
I kept my eyes peeled for the next gas station, hoping to get the beer run out of the way sooner rather than later. About 20 minutes after Mom’s call, a rundown gas station came into view, its neon sky flickering erratically against the dusky sky. Like most gas stations in the middle-of-nowhere-south, it looked like it hadn’t seen a renovation since at least the 70’s.
Pulling in, I parked next to a rusted out pickup and stepped out, the heat and humidity immediately oppressive. The place reeked of old oil and dust, the air thick with the smell of mildew. I made my way inside, the crude “bell” over the door made of old fishing lures and soda caps jingling half-heartedly as I entered.
If I thought the outside of the joint was sad, the inside was plain pathetic. Dimly lit and cluttered with off brand snacks and outdated magazines, I wouldn’t be surprised if it hadn’t been stocked since at least the 70’s. I quickly located the cooler, grabbing a case of Keystone Light and headed to the counter. I tried not to breathe the air in too deeply, a little afraid of whatever strange diseases probably lingered.
The attendant behind the counter was a greasy, wiry man with sunken eyes and a gaunt face. He glanced up from his equally disheveled book, watching me approach with an intensity that made me uneasy. Placing the beer on the counter, I fished out my license, hoping to make this transaction as quick as possible. He eyed me while I pulled my wallet out, his voice reeking of prolonged cigarette and cheap whiskey.
“Headed to Texas?” he gruffed.
I nodded slowly, trying to piece together how he knew. I was still at least an hour and a half from the border. “Yeah, lucky guess.” I chuckled uneasily.
”Not lucky at all,” he drawled out, “Saw yer license plate.”
I turned towards the glass door, seeing the direct line to my car.
“Ah,” I responded, not quite sure what else to add as I put down my drivers license next to the case of beer.
Is this how social interactions at gas stations are supposed to go?
The greasy man picked up my license, his gaze lingering on it a bit too long as he rang the beer up without glancing at the register.
“You’re an organ donor,” he remarked, casual, as if it were something he asked every day.
Nope. Definitely not a normal interaction.
”Uh, yeah. Just in case, I guess.”
He handed back the license and I fought the urge to wipe whatever strange grime he accumulated on his hands off my card.
“Makes you a good person,” he nodded, offering me a rotted grin.
I forced a smile, increasingly eager to get the hell out of this place. “How much?”
”Fifteen seventy three.” He replied, his accent catching over the vowels.
I handed over two wrinkled 10s, wondering if I should tell him to keep the change so I wouldn’t have to handle anything else he touched. Before I could decide, the man spoke again, peering back at the door.
”Yer headed the wrong way if yer trynna get to Texas. Should take the next left up ahead.”
I frowned, unable to keep up my polite mask much longer. “The road’s straight the whole way,” I argued, “I’ve driven it a hundred times.”
The grimy mess of a man simply smiled, a thin, almost predatory smile.
“Only bein polite. Suit yerself”
I took my change and beer, muttering a quick thanks before bolting it out of there. The encounter left an uncomfortable feeling in my chest, and I couldn’t shake the feeling of those piercing eyes on my back as I walked to my car.
Last time I do a favor for mom, I thought dramatically.
Once inside the safety of my car, I locked the doors and started the engine, eager to put distance between myself and that disgusting gas station. The man’s words and shit-eating grin echoed in my mind, but I dismissed them. The road home was straight, I knew that much for certain.
As the miles ticked by, I found myself turning the music up louder and louder, trying to shake off the unease from the encounter. I tried focusing on the familiar landmarks and the lyrics of the songs I’d heard a thousand times. Thankfully, it only took a few songs for it to work.
The sun began to dip lower into the sky, casting long shadows that stretched across the road. I figured I was about an hour from home at this point, my mind itching to be home.
It took me longer than I’d like to admit to see that something was seemingly… wrong.
When I glanced to the side, expecting fields of unkempt brush and patches of cactus, instead I saw short, twisted trees. My eyebrows furrowed, trying to make sense of the misplaced flora. I let off the gas slightly, slowing down the car to take in the patches of damp, soggy earth peppering the fields. I looked behind me, my brain desperate to rationalize the sudden change of environment. I gripped the steering wheel tighter, a knot of anxiety forming in my stomach.
This wasn’t right. I had driven this route countless times and the scenery had never changed so drastically. How in the world had I driven myself into a bog?
The road, usually straightforward and predictable, now seemed to wind and twist as my car crept along it, each bend revealing more of the eerie, waterlogged terrain. Doubts crept in, swift and harsh. Had I missed a turn? Was that psycho right after all?
The feeling of unease grew stronger with each passing mile. The familiar landmarks were gone, replaced by dense foliage and the occasional decrepit and rotted building. I glanced at my phone, picking it up in hopes of checking my GPS, but my heart sank when I saw the “no service” icon in the corner.
Panic began to set in, a cold sweat breaking out on my forehead. I needed to find a way back to the main road, or at least to a road sign.
Just as the sense of dread threatened to overwhelm me, I spotted a building up ahead, its bright lights cutting through the encroaching darkness of dusk. Relief flooded through me. Whatever this place is, surely someone in there can tell me where I got turned around.
However, the sight before me only had my eyebrows furrowing deeper. A clean, well-lit, white building stood amidst the desolate landscape, almost cartoonishly out of place. It looked brand new, too pristine for its surroundings. Like a beacon of hope in a sea of… muck.
Desperation overrode my hesitancy of such a place, fueling my decision to pull over. I parked my car in the well-paved lot, comforted by the other vehicles sitting under the bright lights.
I made my way to the entrance, the glass doors sliding open smoothly as I approached. The stark white walls and sterile smell hit me immediately, a stark contrast to the humid smell of wood rot outside.
Is this some sort of clinic?
I paused as I looked around, my eyes landing on a front desk. A cheery looking woman with a bright smile sat behind it, her eyes already on me.
”Good evening! Are you here to donate?” she called out, her voice light and airy.
I turned back to the door for a moment, my instincts not quite thrilled being in such a strange place, but the idea of trying to get myself un- lost in the dark pushed me further towards the front desk.
”Uh, no. I’m actually lost,” I responded, giving the woman a weak smile. “I’m trying to get to Texas and I think I may have taken a wrong turn. Can you point me in the right direction?”
Her smile didn’t falter, but there was a flicker of something else in her eyes. Disappointment? Annoyance? It was hard to tell.
”Of course, sugar. But why don’t you take a seat first?”
I glanced around to what I now assumed was a waiting room. The occupants were an odd assortment of characters, each making me more uneasy than the last. An elderly man in disheveled clothes sat closest, muttering to himself while looking straight through me.
A few seats down sat a young woman with stringy hair, as if she had just gotten out of the shower. Her eyes looked red and puffy and I could only assume she either was terribly allergic to bogs, or she had been crying for a while.
Next, a man with a little girl sitting beside him caught my attention. The girl clutched a small stuffed bunny, her eyes regarding me curiously. She seemed to be the only person aware of my existence and I threw a small smile her way. Her eyes shifted immediately, darting nervously back to the man beside her. The man had no reaction, continuing to stare straight ahead with a vacant expression.
Lastly, a businessman sat in the corner, his wrinkled suit and messy hair contradicting his aloof demeanor. He held a phone to his ear, checking his watch intermittently. The whole scene of the room reeked of impatience and unease, making my skin crawl.
What the hell is this place?
I turned back to the front desk, forcing a smile. “Listen, ma’am. I’m really just looking for directions. I don’t need an appointment.”
The woman tilted her head slightly, her smile never wavering. “Mr. Weller can see you for a donation. It won’t take long.”
“I really don’t have time for that. I just need to get back on the road,” I insisted, the edge of desperation beginning to creep into my voice.
She ignored my plea, typing something into the computer. “Mr. Weller will be with you shortly. Please, take a seat.”
Frustration boiled over. I was about to argue further when I noticed the other patients had started to stare, their gazes heavy and expectant. The atmosphere in the room shifted to feel charged, almost oppressive.
Deciding I had seen quite enough, I muttered quickly. ”Thanks, but I’m going to pass,” and turned on my heel, making a beeline for the exit.
The nurse’s cheerful farewell followed me out, a stark contrast to the chill that had settled in my bones.
I hurried back to my car, the clinic’s lights painting long shadows across the parking lot. Sliding into the driver’s seat, I locked the doors and took a deep breath, trying to steady my racing heart. The “clinic” had rattled me more than I cared to admit.
As I started the engine and pulled back onto the road, the clinic quickly disappeared from view, swallowed by the hungry night. My mind raced, grappling with the bizarre turn of events. The woman at the front desk’s insistence, the strange people in the waiting room, and the clinic itself…
none of it made sense.
Determined to put this fever dream behind me and find my way home, I refocused on the road ahead, hoping that with a bit of luck, I could retrace my steps and escape this unsettling detour. The landscape grew darker, the swamp closing in around me, but I pressed on, clinging to the desperate hope that familiar sights were just around the next bend.
The feeling of unease clung to me like an unwanted second skin as I drove further on, minutes passing with no change. Eventually, at least an hour passed, the monotony of the road broken only by the occasional curve and the distant croaking of frogs. I had long since shut off my radio, seeing as no amount of Lynyrd Skynyrd could make the situation better.
My eyes strained against the darkness, searching for any road signs or landmarks.
Yet as time wore on, familiar trees passing by, an alarming realization began to settle in.
Despite making no turns. Despite the road seemingly taking me far away,
I was back where I started.
Bright lights pierced the gloom ahead, the parking lot coming into view mocking my attempt to leave. My heart sank, a cold wave of dread washing over me the closer I got.
I was back at the clinic.

2024.05.18 19:25 Omegarus211 Ragnarok: Second Coming - Chapter 6

Ragnarok: Second Coming - Chapter 6
Chapter 6 – {Awakening}
“What a sudden turn of events! Camulus has undergone a startling transformation, and has now suddenly gained the advantage! Can Henry come back from this? Or will Camulus crush him like the unstoppable force he has now seem to have become.”
“What are we gonna’ do nowwwwww?” Goll whined, tears streaming down her face as she shelled up on the floor.
Arthur looked at her sympathetically, as if he were a dad looking at his crying daughter. Kneeling down, he placed a hand on her shoulder and rubbed gently, trying to rouse her from her worry. “There, there, the fight is not over yet.” Arthur assured her softly.
Snapping up into a sitting position, she grabbed a hold of whatever cloth she could get her hands on and began to shake Arthur as hard as she could. With tear now of anger rather than sadness, she began to shout at him. “WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN, “The fights not over yet”? HE'S JUST TAKEN ON A STRONGER FORM, AND HENRY CAN BARELY KEEP UP WITH HIM AT HIS BASE LEVEL! HOW THE HELL DO YOU SUGGEST THEY GET OUT OF THIS ONE?!”
He tried to get out a response as he shook back and forth wildly, “Just-keep-wa-tching-the-ma-tch.”

As Goll had a meltdown up in the stands, Henry was struggling to stand on the field. His left arm had been rendered little more than a clump of bruised flesh and powdered bone, the mangled limb twisted at a truly sickening angle. The rest of his exposed form was bruised, bloodied and battered, micro cuts crisscrossed his frame alongside deeper gashes and rents in his flesh from the many blows he had endured over the course of the fight. And now he stood, staring up at his opponent, stronger than ever, like a stone wall, waiting for Henry to shatter himself on his now indomitable stature.
And yet, the light still burned in Henry’s mind. Like an everlasting flame, the spark of warmth, of passion and determination still burned in Henry’s soul. He would see this fight through, no matter the odds stacked against him, or the forces that sought to block his path, he would endure. It did not matter to him that one of his arms had been mangled. The god could have a leg, if they wanted, perhaps even both. As long as he could raise his sword, he could still fight. And if he could fight, he could win.
All it would take, is one good shot.
“I would advise you to surrender now. Perhaps they’ll let you keep your life.” Camulus suggested, a deep grimace on his face.
Planting his sword in the cracks of the stone, Henry propped himself up on the blade, his muscle screaming for release, yet he could not stop. He strained to smile, his eyes bleary as he looked at his adversary. “I’m sorry,” he declared, pride creeping into his voice, “but a King bows to no one, not mortal, and since the gods show themselves cruel and fickle, not even them. As a leader, I would be a disgrace if I chose any path other than battle.”
Camulus processed his opponent’s words for a second, then a toothy grin stretched on his face, one of pride and excitement, but more worryingly, one of sheer bloodlust, “Then we’re of the same mind.”
Camulus’ image blurred as he seemed to vanish into thin air. Confusion didn’t even have time to set in, as the god’s fist smashed into the plate of armour protecting Henry torso just below the sternum. The shock wave of the blow boomed throughout the stadium. Henry heaved as the hit knocked him away, but before he could go very far, a nanosecond after the punch, the sole of Camulus’ foot slammed into Henry’s face brutalizing his nose and adding more momentum in addition to the punch, sending him clear across the ring, crashing into the walls and the arena.
Henry hacked up a glob of blood as his head spun for the 1-2 combo of devastation. Camulus sauntered toward Henry as if he were taking a stroll through the fields. The image vanished, before appearing directly above Henry in an instant. A wicked grin near split Camulus’ face as he began to hammer down on Henry’s form. All Henry could do was shell up in hopes to stave off the onslaught. The blows came in a million a second, embedding him deeper into the stone as the armour continued to crumple under the pressure.

“It seems Camulus has this battle won.” Andrasta commented, her tone pointedly neutral.
“Yes, but at what cost?” Cnabetius answered, his voice wavering as he was on the verge of tears.
“The little one is right,” Caturix answered, “that form may give him great physical might, but it comes at the cost of a deteriorating mental state.”
Lugh spoke up. “And you would know about this?” he prodded, trying to get more information out of the Battle King.
Caturix’s jaw clenched as he watched the fight intently, his mind and body on edge from the brutal display

Swinging his arm wide, he dug his arm into the arena and dragged it through the stone, palming the side of his opponent’s head and sending them flying through the air, before quickly crashing into the ground with a sickening thud.
Seeing his fallen foe splayed across the ground, Camulus crouched down and tensed, as if he were an apex predator waiting for the right moment to strike his prey. Henry, meanwhile, was struggling to breathe after the bombardment of blows. He heaved as he struggled to rise to his feet, the misshapen armour now digging into his body at odd angles. His knees were shaking as the struggled to rise to his feet.
In an instant, his adversary was again upon him, battering with every kind of blow at every angle one could think of. Punches, kick, elbows, knees, chops, Camulus even made use of the spikes and blades on his knuckledusters, raking and slashing them across any exposed flesh he could see. Henry struggled to withstand the hail of blows, each hits threatening to knock him over. He couldn’t dodge the assault, he could barely block or even see the hits. The sheer speed and ferocity of the onslaught made it nigh impossible to even find an opportunity to counter, let alone pull it off successfully.
Camulus began to laugh uproariously, seemingly enjoying the punishment he was inflicting upon his prey, almost relishing in the game of life and death. Each blow forced Henry back, his will struggling to keep him from being knocked clean off his feet.
A punch smashed into Henry’s stomach, making Henry wretch as he struggled to keep his stomach contents from being violently forced from his body. An instant later, an upper cut hammered into his jaw with the might of a catapult, launching his body high into the air. Henry’s head wrung like a gong as not even a moment later, Camulus was directly above him. Henry tried to raise his sword to strike at his foe, but he found it kicked away as Camulus began to spin, gaining momentum as he prepared to strike his opponent down. As his fists came down, for just a moment, the metals shone like diamonds in the sunlight.
[Colchester Crash]
This time, there was no defence, no counter to the blow. It connected squarely into Henry’s chest, as the blow slammed down both combatants like a meteor. The ground was blasted to pieces as small rock were smashed to dust in the wind, and largerocks sent flying in every direction. The building seemed to be cracking apart, sending both god and man alike into a panic as they rushed to either escape or stop the damage from becoming worse. The sound boomed throughout the entire Realm as the dust settled into a thick cloud that covered the arena.
Several moments passed as the cloud slowly died away to reveal the carnage. What ever hadn’t been destroyed before the impact as certainly pulverised now. The floor was a mess, rock jutting up from the earth at random intervals, as if they were whales breaching the surface of the sea. Cracks like spider webs sectioned the ground, transforming the terrain into a grid of madness.
It was from that chaos one of the combatants forced themselves into the light. The rocks moved and shifted, giving way to reveal Camulus almost completely unharmed.
Physically, at least.
Mentally it was clear that something was not right. His eyes were red deeply bloodshot and demented, his grin splitting his face as his teeth slowly grinded together. If his sanity hadn’t fled him before, it was certainly gone now.

“Uh, guys”, Cnabetius stammered, “I don’t like that look he has.”
“It’s quite worrisome.” Andrasta replied, a slight warble in her voice from fear.
“Most worrisome.” Lugh added.
Meanwhile, Caturix began to shake, the pace of his breath increasing steadily as he took in the sight, his worst nightmare come back to haunt him. ‘Dammit, I knew this would happen, I knew that if that form was released it would be the end for all of us.’

He remembered that day as if he were living it. The day when the true God of War was decided.
The great battles of unification had taken millennia, dozens, if not hundred of God’s staking their claim as the one true God of War. It was an intense and bloody affair, but at the end, it had come down to two men, two unbroken warriors; The Battle King, Caturix and the Untameable Flame, Camulus. It had been a battle that had been brewing for centuries, and in Caturix’s mind, it did not disappoint.
For days, the two warred, battering each other bloody with everything they had in their arsenal.

Caturix hit Camulus with every attack in his arsenal, yet the kid refused to fall, refused to yield. Instead, the young God only used each blow as motivation to hit back harder

Blow after blow, each stronger than the last. But just as Camulus refused to fall, neither did Caturix. Even [Across the Channel], professed by many to be the knockout blow against him was not actually enough to drop him, not on it’s own. In fact, as the battle drew to it’s close, it seemed as if Caturix was finally beginning to get the better of his rival.
He hit another [Magh Ithe] flush into Camulus’s chest. How many he had hit at that point was lost to Caturix, he lost count after 36. But this time, after so much punishment, Camulus finally looked as if he was about to drop.
‘Just one more.’ Caturix thought tiredly, yet hopefully to himself. ‘Just one more hit, and he might finally go down’.
Caturix moved in, charging up a final blow, ready to finally put an end to this.
“Eat this! [Europa: Overlord]”
He launched the move with full might. The mere force of the group rending it asunder.
Only to find a fist connecting squarely with his jaw.
Now, Caturix had endured the feeling of a punch countless of his millennia of combat. He had endured countless punches in this fight alone. So it it is all the more notable that this punches, out of the uncountable masses, was the one he recognised about all others. He remembered it for one simple reason. Never before, and never since , had any one blow struck him as hard as that one punch.
At that moment, Caturix knew one painful, and consuming truth. He was going to lose.
The Camulus struck with [Across the Channel].
Whilst the first one had been impactful, this second flurry carried with it far greater speed and power, too great for even the battle king to withstand. It was as if Camulus had gathered a second wind, twice as strong as before. The final blow smashed into Caturix’s temple, sending his brain spinning through several dimensions as the battle king, after so long, finally fell.
Camulus was the victor. Yet he did not stop.
Instead, Camulus leapt upon his foe with ferocity, like a rabid animal tearing at a carcass. He began to pummel the battle king mercilessly, wanting his pound of flesh from his opponent. It was here, up close, that Caturix could see the change his opponent underwent, the strange blue markings that were spread across his body like war paint, and his deeply bloodshot eyes. The beating was relentless, as the new monster sought to punish Caturix for daring to challenge it.
He knew he had to do something to seal this monster that had been unleashed from with Camulus’ soul, lest he rampage throughout the Realm.
[Sheathing of the Blade]
Caturix stabbed into Camulus at specific spots with the spikes on his gauntlets, finding the vital points where energy was drawn from, and sealing them. He would not know whether it worked in the moment, as he passed out a second later. It would only be when he awoke days later, did he find out his success.
It would be the first and last time he would fight Camulus for the top. Not because he saw himself as lesser, but because he did not want to risk unleashing that terror again

And now, that terror was staring him in the face once again.
He could see that same all-consuming desire for blood and destruction. He tensed preparing to fight the one thing that put fear into his heart.
He was bought out of his thought by a loud WHAM that shook the stadium as Thor rose to his feet. The God of Thunder stared down at his one challenger, ready for that long awaited rematch.
“Ah, w-well...” Heimdall stuttered, still feeling from the chaos that had just occurred, “It would appear that the winner of Round 1 is...”
Camulus’ Attention was now laser focused on Thor, tensing as he prepared to leap towards a new opponent.
“The Celtic God of War...”
Ready, set-
“Camu-”
A breath could be heard from the rubble.
It was a quiet, rasping breath, yet it could be heard with clarity across the entire stadium. Everyone froze as they realised where that breath came from. The rocks shifted as out from the rubble emerged the battered, but still living form of Henry V.
“Damn, that was too close for comfort!” Lancelot huffed, still trying to get his wits about him, “You almost got pasted there, and that means we both would have died, you damn fool. Not like that matters much now...”
Camulus’ head turned to regard the bloodied king, salivating with demented glee, ready for the continued brutality.
“Since we’re gonna be dead in a few seconds regardless.”
As Henry lay there, broken and bloodied, he could hear voices from the audience.

“HENRY!” his father yelled, “Don’t you give up now, boy! You are the best of all of us! Show that god what's what?”
“Let that god know the might of the English!” Henry VII shouted.
“Show them what a real warrior can do!” Richard Lionheart roared.
“C’Mon dad, you can do this” Henry VI cheered.
Hotspur stepped forward, gathering his breath before screaming to the Heavens, “MONMOUTH! What do want to do?! What is your one true desire?!”

“To win, my way.”
Pushing off his good arm, he strained to sit up, collecting his breath as he did so. “Never surrender, never retreat.”
“Oh sure,” Lancelot responded, the sarcasm layered on very thick, “and how exactly are we supposed to do that.”
Henry slowly stood, carefully balancing his weight between the sword and his weary legs. “There is one thing we can do... just one.”
https://preview.redd.it/30opimuez71d1.png?width=4096&format=png&auto=webp&s=8725c7ced4d0cd872401fed592c0d97a92102b10
Closing his eyes, he focused deeply, bringing out every thought every emotion he had ever had, then let all of them flow from his mind. He let complete and total calm take hold in that moment. There was no emotion, there was no doubt or second guessing, there was only truth. Absolute, irrevocable truth. The deepest instinct, the greatest of them all.
“[Royal instinct]”
Less than a second later, Camulus had leapt to within striking distance, ready to end his foe. But whereas Henry was completely overwhelmed before, now his clarity was absolute. He knew exact what would happen, how each and every muscle within Camulus’ body would move before they even did so. Henry knew what Camulus’ second move would be before he even began his first.
Camulus shot out with a wild punch, which the more focused Henry deflected with ease. If he had use of his other arm, he may have even followed up with a punch of his own. Instead, he simply let Camulus’ momentum work against him.
The god overshot, and was sent crashing into the ground a few times before slamming into the wall.
As the crowd looked on in shock at what had just happened, they turned to look at the man who had done it. He had change, it was clear to see for all through the change on his eyes, once filled with brown tones, now a crystalline, pale silver. The sword had morphed to reflect this new state, reflecting the mind of a king. Whatever this was, it had shifted the tide of battle yet again.
https://preview.redd.it/i40thhpcz71d1.png?width=4096&format=png&auto=webp&s=8e2d91981867bbda4480edf1c3da008a9146e66a
“Damn! What is this?!” Lancelot cried, “I feel my head is full of everything and nothing at the same time!”
“[Royal Instinct]! A fine tuning of the instincts within all of us. By using this we, can reject all unnecessary thoughts and information, both new and old, as well as higher awareness and clarity of vital information. On the absolute truth of the situation will be known to us, truth we’ll know before the lie can even be made.”
Camulus soon broke his way free from the rock and charged. He leapt forward again, this time with an elbow, again deflected. Again, Camulus skid across the rocks for several metres, but this time, he was able to right himself and charge in again. But again, the resulting attack was deflected.
This repeated several more times, each attack and recovery was faster than the last. But Henry parried them all with perfect clarity, as he bided his time for the perfect moment.
After another parry, Camulus righted himself and prepared the blast into Henry at full speed, all thought of technique gone from the raving gods mind. Henry readied his blade for his own strike.
The mere tap of Camulus’ foot sent shock waves through the ground as he rocketed forward and max speed. But Henry was undeterred. Swiftly parrying the blow, he brought his arm in and then swung out. The pommel connected directly with Camulus’ temple, sending the force of the impact through his head, almost seeming to paralyse the god, as he crashed and skidded across the ground limply.
For the first time since the transformation occurred, Henry had seized the advantage.

‘Where the hell am I?’ was Camulus’ first weary thought after being shocked back to sanity.
‘Ohhh fuck, my head hurts worse than that time me and Cna went drinking at the place the humans called Mamucium.’
Taking a moment to clear the thunderstorm in his head, he scanned over the decimated arena, his dizziness turning to confusion. ‘OK seriously, what the hell happened here?’
Pushing himself from the rubble, he survey the situation, trying to understand what was going on. Then suddenly, his skull felt as if it was about to burst, and his eyes swan with illusions and distortions of reality, hearing voices whispering behind his ears. Camulus clutched at his head, forcing the thoughts down. After a minute of excruciating pain, he finally returned to reality.
'Dammit, what's going on with me? Focus! You have a fight to win!'
“Damn, we might have knocked him out cold. I’m loath to say it, but I think you were right, we may have a chance after all.” Lancelot commented, almost in awe of the current situation.
Henry chuckled, “Wouldn’t have figured you to be one to admit when you were wrong.”
Lancelot froze for a moment, before scoffing at Henry’s comment, “Just because you were right doesn’t mean I was wrong, jackass!”
For a moment, Henry laughed at Lancelot’s Haughtiness, before that cheer was replaced by boiling pain, as he dropped to a knee. Lancelot was confused for a moment, before he felt a warm liquid pour from his eyes. As he dabbed at his eyes, he saw the crimson colouration that quickly gave away what that liquid was.
Blood.
“What the hell is this? What’s going on?!”
Henry stammered as he spoke, still trying to get his wits about him. “A-ah yes, t-here is a cost t-to using the form.”
https://preview.redd.it/bzcy3g8vz71d1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=a7682905a9a922d062639ce0d01afe3c1fff92e6
“And what would that be?!”
“Working the mind at such an acute level can result in overload if stressed too hard, or used too long. I’ve been used to using against humans...”
“...and you just now used it against a god.” Lancelot finish.
“Y-yes”
“Jesus Christ,” Lancelot mumbled, “WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?!” he them screamed.
“I’ve made peace with the fact that even if I win, I likely won’t live much longer anyway. So right now, in this moment, I don’t care how much damage I do to myself, or how much time I have left is eaten away. As long as I have enough to win this fight, long enough to bring humanity, and the people I care for, one step closer to salvation, it matters not.”
Both Camulus and Henry stood, readying their guard, their bodies battered and bruised, yet their spirits unbroken, they both knew one thing. Win or lose, this fight was nearing its end.

Is this the darkest Legion story ever told? We say goodbye to some old friends, hello to the new creative team, and look at Legionnaires 77 - 79 and Legion 121 & 122
The times are dramatically changing and we say goodbye to the longtime creative teams that, believe it or not, crafted this version of the Legion for 6 years. To put this into perspective, Paul Levitz's second run lasted 7 and the 5YL Legion lasted 5. So they're one of the longest runs in Legion history.
I wanted to make a point about the sales on this book to clarify an error I made before. Up to this point, this was the lowest-selling Legion book ever. The only saving moment they had was Final Night, where sales spiked up again because of the book's connection to DC's big crossover. But once that was over, they just went back down again, eventually cratering and heading for cancellation.
But, post-threeboot, Legion sales were even worse. Every Legion book follows the same pattern - nice sales for the first issue and then an almost precipitous drop quickly after.
However, and this is where I'm going to be a little mean, I think that this version of the Legion is the worst-selling Legion book when compared to the rest of the comic industry at the time. I think that Legion v7 selling 15,000 copies a few years ago is much worse than Legion v4 selling 17,000 in 1999.
Let's talk about the high points of this run:
  • I'm going to call out Jeff Moy first. He lasted the entire run, brought a youthful energy and enthusiasm to the book that the other title was never able to match, and made the book his own. Yes, I could nitpick anatomy, perspective, and storytelling problems, but I can't argue with the simple fact that he drew the hardest superhero book for six years, hit all his deadlines, and created a good-looking book. His Legionnaires were fun, happy, and looked their ages. He's also a part of some of the best stories of the run and his contributions were unparalleled. I don't know if he gets put onto the Legion artist pantheon but he definitely deserves consideration.
  • I know it seems obvious to say that Mark Waid was the best writer this run saw, but I don't know if that's something you can argue against. I think they really missed his talents when he left and the book would've been much better if he stayed.
  • Roger Stern and Carmela Merlo brought a competency and professionalism to the writing team when they joined and brought back a lot of the youthful energy the book needed.
  • KC Carlson oversaw one of the worst times in Legion history (the end of 5YL) and somehow made a reboot work that didn't completely offend longtime readers. It's a tough job to oversee two interconnected books (also something that was never attempted before or since) and made it work.
  • We got some classic Legion tales: the Mordru battle, Violet and the Emerald Eye, the creation of the Fatal Five, the Daxamite attack on Earth
  • We got the definitive takes on a few characters: Triad, Invisible Kid, Shrinking Violet... and some great updates on a few: Brainiac 5, Star Boy, Bouncing Boy, Matter-Eater Lad... and some of the best new Legionnaires: Gates, XS, Kinetix, Kid Quantum, and Monstress.
And the low points:
  • For every Moy book that looked good, we got some really bad artwork from Lee Moder and Scott Kolins.
  • I still will never figure out why Tom McCraw kept his plotting job after the bad ending to 5YL and he had just as many misses with this run. I know he's constantly talked about as a Legion historian, but there needs to be more to your job, right?
  • I've seen a lot of posts defending Tom Peyer, but I just never saw it. He'd get one good issue out of 12 and, for the most part, dropped the ball more often than he scored. There were too many times when it just felt like he was phoning it in.
  • Some absolute clunkers of stories: almost everything after the Mordru saga, the reintroduction of Invisible Kid II, almost everything involving McCauley, almost everything involving Apparition and her past...
  • Some horrible new versions of the characters: Apparition, Ultra Boy, Element Lad, Saturn Girl as mind-controller... some shaky new versions: Live Wire, Cosmic Boy, M'onel, Umbra... and the worst new character in the Legion: Koko.
All in all, it's a run that has high highs and painfully low lows. I will still argue that this run needs to be included in any reboot/relaunch of the Legion and ignoring some of these characters and changes would be to the detriment of the series. But I also don't think it comes close to the second Levitz run or the first couple of years of 5YL.
Let's continue the reread:
Legionnaires #77
The entire Legion heads to the beach for sun, sand, romance, and to catch a thief... kinda...
These are the kinds of issues that this creative team has shown they do well so I'm expecting it to be fun. I've said before that I love it when the Legion is hanging out and just being friends.
Let's focus on the important parts of the story:
  • Almost the entire team heads to Summer World, a planet that is basically all beach, so they can relax, spend some quality time together, and bond.
  • While there, Element Lad wants to figure out who's been stealing stuff the past few issues (such as the crystals a while ago), so he's got Sensor, Monstress, and Kinetix to help. They go undercover (yes, the gigantic woman and the talking snake) to try to figure out which really rich person was behind all the crimes.
  • In a fun twist, the criminal ends up confessing and turning himself in as he realizes that the Legionnaires are after him and he can't take the strain and pressure. Yes, it's silly, but it works in this issue.
  • Lori Morning arrives as well, alongside Amilia Crugg, and we get a nice fashion moment with Monstress.
  • To show you just how seriously the Legion is taking Jan's quest for the thief, Monstress deserts him to join Lori and XS to go on some rides. Like I said before, this issue is just about fun and anything remotely heroic is put to the very far back burner.
  • On the romantic front, Chuck and the Luornu's spend some time together and it's revealed that at least two of the three personalities like him. We also get more Dyrk/XS moments, which I'm glad to see, and the introduction of a Monstress/Jan romance... now I'm sad that we won't get much more of this before the change in direction.
  • I also have to give credit for how they handled Kinetix here - she finally gets her personality back and was key to a lot of things going on in this issue.
Maybe it's because I just had a nice, hot vacation, but I really enjoyed this one and loved that it showed the personalities of the Legionnaires again. Although, to be honest, I would've loved to have had just a couple of panels of Gates complaining about the opulence, the sand, and the heat...
It's also the final issue for the writing team and I think Tom McCraw, Roger Stern, and Carmela Merlo really leaned into what they did the best. It's a nice way to wrap up their run.
LSH #121
In a complete change of tone, we're back with the Fatal Five (four?) story. Let's go random stream of consciousness while I read...
We start with a desolate planet called Tenazor and a huge ship crash lands into the surface. Is this the Fatal Five? Someone else?
Oh, and I have to say I love the Walt Simonson sound effects they use here - not sure if they paid him for the style and look but they should.
Half the team is flying back to the Outpost (although at this point I'm honestly not sure who's assigned where, but that might just be my bad memory... or I'm wondering why the lightning twins aren't here) when their beach memories are interrupted by Brainiac 5, who's nice enough to recap last issue. He tells them they warped the whole Outpost through a stargate and they crashed on the planet from the first page... even though the ship that crashed didn't look big enough to be the Outpost.
Umbra and M'onel have already arrived at Tenazor and, since it's under an orange sun, the Daxamite is only at half strength. Which is perfect when going against the Fatal Five. The villains have already started turning the locals into slave labor, because they have to make the villains even more villainous, right?
M'onel tries to fight everyone by himself, uses absolutely no strategy aside from attack, and gets blasted by the Emerald Eye. I will repeat what I said last issue - does any Legionnaire actually think before they rush into battle? He and Umbra are quickly defeated before the rest of the Legion arrives, including Gates and Brainy.
We get a nice moment between Kinetix and Violet, as the latter worries about facing the Eye again and Kinetix reassures her that she's afraid because she hated the evil that she did. They hug and I, once again, wish they did more with Zoe.
Brainy comes up with the incredible plan of while the Legion is fighting the Fatal Five, he'll sneak in and regain control of the Outpost. Yep, that's it. No need to consider strategy, or the best members for attacking the different foes, or how Ferro is going to accomplish anything...
Subplot: Dreamer has, of course, a bad dream about something ending too soon for the Legion. We all know it's this series (only 4 issues to go), but wouldn't it be great to do a subplot with Dreamer where she wakes up, surprised by a good dream?
The battle starts and Karate Kid takes down the Empress (who I guess isn't tied to the Eye at all) with one move. Wow - they could've actually written a compelling fight scene and let the two of them go but, instead, just let Val defeat this killer with one move. Kind of a waste, if you ask me.
As the fight continues, and the Legion actually uses teamwork to go against the Persuader, we get a very strange scene with Gates single-handedly teleporting the Eye away. He also gets to throw in some nice socialist dogma while he's doing it, just in case there was anyone who wasn't sure what his political beliefs are. Just kinda overkill right now...
Element Lad and Kinetix try to change the Emerald Eye into something less threatening, Sensor makes Validus think his lightning is going against him so that Violet and Ferro can knock him unconscious. (That's something I never thought I'd see in a Legion comic).
And then Koko takes off to save a green monkey. Yes, you read that correct. We're interrupting the action to focus on Koko saving another monkey.
Brainy distracts Tharok, allowing Dyrk to cut the power to the Outpost and end the threat. He blasts the villain with a force field (just going to say now that I really liked that they added this to his arsenal - using the force field as an aggressive weapon was a great add to the character).
Element Lad creates a magnesium flare and blinds the Emerald Eye. Another thing I didn't think I'd see in a Legion comic.
We wrap everything up very quickly, as the villains are captured, M'onel flies the Outpost back into space, and Brainy leaves Koko on the planet so the white monkey can bond with the green monkeys. The Legion wonders what harm Koko can do, but we see that he's already leading the monkeys with a Legion wristband on him.
That's not going to go well, is it?
I actually kinda liked this one, if only for the massive amount of teamwork used. They probably didn't need to reform the Fatal Five for this, and they defeated them really, really easily, but the Legion worked as a team, so that was okay for me. Or maybe I'm just in a better mood today...
The more I think about it, the more I feel like the creative team used the Fatal Five for no other reason than they knew this was their last chance. It's their final issue and I think they wanted to go out with a bang, using the best villains in the Legion arsenal. I now kinda wish they had scrapped a lot of the previous issues and done something a little more epic. But that's been a constant complaint for the McCraw/Peyer team - they just never knew how to actually lay out a storyline.
Legionnaires #78
Here we have it - the first regular Legion title written by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning (Or DnA). Oh, and a barely remembered artist named Olivier Coipel shows up for the final two pages as well. Let's see how they handle these characters...
One of my favorite things to notice during rereads is how well the new creative teams introduce new concepts and ideas and how well they keep characterizations consistent. In some cases, the teams slow build, adding things here and there and try their best not to completely recreate the book. In other cases, they immediately start throwing their new ideas in.
Rereading this book, there are a couple of elements that are almost immediately evident:
  • A more scientific slant to the book. Rather than have the book feel like a regular comic book, DnA immediately throw in basic sci-fi concepts such as Asimov's Law of Robotics (almost too much of that, but I'm still happy they're doing it). Brainiac 5 comes up with a solution to their problems by reprogramming their opponents. The book finally feels like something that is happening in the future. (On a complete aside, why would Brainy use anything by Asimov? Wouldn't Colu have come up with their own rules for robots because they created robots first? Or because they are superior, intellectually, to Earth?)
  • Continuing with that, the introduction of Robotica. Unless I completely forgot some older Legion story, this is the first time we're hearing of a robots-only world... okay, I can think of a couple from the very old days of the Legion but I'm not sure that's what they're referencing. I doubt any reader knew where this was going in this first issue by the writers.
A change in a few relationships:
  • Jo and Tinya immediately change, as they show her want to work away from her husband and do something without him. In one page, they establish that they're not just an annoyingly-attached couple that can't exist without the other. It's also the first time Tinya felt a little like Phantom Girl.
  • Live Wire brings up the idea of marriage to Saturn Girl and she's receptive. Wow - that's fast. But, again, they immediately throw out the "Garth can't handle the separation and acts like a petulant child" storyline and have him acting like a more mature character.
  • XS and Monstress joking together about their teammates, showing that they're more connected than we thought.
  • Brainy no longer being a complete ass, but just kinda snarky and curt. It's a subtle change, but shows some growth.
One smart think DnA did here was just use 4 main characters for the story: Cosmic Boy, Apparition, Brainiac 5, and Monstress. Instead of being overwhelmed by the gigantic team, they went small (something they'll continue for over a year) and focus on just a few of the characters.
And finally, the last two pages start the destruction, as stargates are destroyed and whole systems are wiped out. Death and destruction are coming and heading towards Earth...
LSH #122
Legion of the Damned, Part One
After reading this book, I spent some time trying to think of comic series that underwent dramatic, intense changes in both style and level of quality. I mentioned this before, but I always find it interesting when series get new creative teams and go in dramatically different directions. I like to see what big and small changes they make.
For this series, the change is incredibly dramatic.
The only comparable book I can think of is when Grant Morrison and Richard Case took over Doom Patrol. It went from a fairly standard, somewhat uninteresting superhero book to a trip through Morrison's crazed vision of a broken bunch of heroes. The book was immediately 10000 times better and eventually joined the Vertigo universe to allow Morrison to push the envelope even further.
I can't imagine what it must have been like at the end of 1999, after spending years reading the Archie Legion, to suddenly have everything shift to such a degree.
DnA have taken everyone's fears of Y2K and turned them into the Blight, an evil alien consciousness that has taken over the Earth, destroyed everything (including Interlac, which is no longer on display), and taken possession of the Legionnaires, turning them into slaves.
At the heart the of Metropolis is The Stem, the huge organism from which the Blight conjure energy ribbons for transportation. It's also believed to be part of the network that brought the Blight to Earth.
There are almost no beings left on Earth, just the Blight. The scared few who are free are trying to escape by getting resistance leader R.J. Brande to use the last remaining stargate to help them get off planet. And leading them are Live Wire, XS, Chameleon, and Shvaughn Erin.
But they face the possessed versions of Umbra, Ultra Boy, and Karate Kid and, except for Cham, fall under the Blight's control. Cham's lost, desperate, trying to find help, when the four Legionnaires from last issue (Cosmic Boy, Apparition, Monstress, and Brainiac 5) finally return to Earth with no clue of what's happened.
Wow, we just got really, really, really dark.
Legionnaires #79
Legion of the Damned, Part Two
DnA and Olivier Coipel continue this story, so I'm going to assume that this whole series was done months earlier to ensure they could hit this bi-weekly schedule. In that case, the previous creative teams had to know that their run was over far sooner than I guessed before.
We start this issue with Cham explaining to the four what happened and just how quickly the Blight took over the Earth and their former teammates. His big reveal, of course, is that everyone was taken to The Stem.
To further stress the darkness of the story, we see inside The Stem and see XS's fate. She's been taken prisoner and is now being processed for power sapping. She's trapped inside a cocoon, breathing some strange liquid, but because of her powers, she cannot be kept unconscious. So she's aware of the horror around her. She's heading towards the end and knows she's about to lose everything.
Then we get a flashback to when the four finally reached the Legion Outpost. Tinya is being her usual annoying self, whining about not getting to see Jo. Monstress is trying to keep positive but Brainy is tired of her tantrums. It's moments like these when you remember that Tinya's around 16 years old... and married... and emotionally immature. Last issue's change is already tossed to show that she sometimes is going to act like a little kid.
As the four board the Outpost, they immediately realize that it's empty, hasn't been used in a while, and something very bad is happening. The Blight recognize they're onboard and blow up the Outpost just as they get away. But the blast destroys their ship and they crash on Earth. I guess the Blight brought the Outpost to Earth at some point, right?
Tinya wakes up from that nightmare (strange that she's super annoying in her own dream) and chats with Cham about how they need to get into The Stem to try to figure out what's actually going on.
Within The Stem, XS is being taken further into the chamber when she starts communicating with a telepath. She's waking up, her speed powers allowing her to get over the sedative. She sees the remaining Legionnaires hanging from the ceiling, like food, and then decides it's time to escape. She also recognizes the telepath - it's Saturn Girl. She bursts from her cocoon, grabs Saturn Girl, and starts running.
Outside The Stem, the five head towards the huge organism, looking for a way to get inside. Brainy spots a opening and explains the science behind how they can get in. I'm just going to point out right now that I really like the way DnA are handling Brainy. He's actually acting super intelligent, and above the rest of the team, and irritating in a stubborn, smug way instead of just being an ass.
Inside The Stem, Jenni's too tired to continue and Imra tells her to leave her behind. Then Imra shares what she's seen, what she's learned inside The Stem and XS is stunned.
To make matters worse, the Blight have sent all the possessed Legionnaires to destroy those who are free.
We'll finish off the Blight next week!
Our next Legionnaire in the spotlight... Element Lad!!!

To me, Jan Arrah is the soul of the Legion and the one who made the Legion a family instead of just a team. Having suffered from quite possibly the most horrific origin story of any super-hero ever created, he became the backbone of the team and one of the best leaders ever. Perhaps he, more than almost any other character except for Dream Girl, benefited from being the team leader during the Levitz run and that's what's coloring my judgment here. But I don't think so. I think the strength of the character has been there from very early on and Levitz and Giffen leaned into it, turning him into a must-have Legionnaire.
Sadly, post-5YL, he has never been used to his potential and most of the creative teams don't seem to understand his importance.
  • Let's go back to the beginning - his entire planet was wiped out by Roxxas, leaving him as the only survivor of the planet Trom. As a child reading these books, I don't think I ever quite understood the magnitude of the suffering or the crime. As an adult, it's stunning that he can even get out of bed in the morning.
  • Looking back through the issues, has Jan always had the best (or worst) hair of any Legionnaire? From the feathered look in the 70's to the awesome perm in the 80's, he's always been styling an epic do.
  • I actually quite liked the way they turned Jan bisexual in the 90's and made it something completely normal and natural. It was epically progressive writing for the time and surprising from one of the big two comic companies. Looking back on it now, however, I do wish that their whole motivation for changing his sexual preference had been for a better reason than "he wears a pink costume."
  • Speaking of costumes, I've always liked the Element Lad costume - especially when he had the Interlac letter E on his chest. It just felt more futuristic, if that makes sense.
  • What I didn't like about that change was how they handled the Shvaughn Erin side of the story. The Jan/Shvaughn romance had been one of the strongest parts of the series, romantically, and a mature relationship that readers were happy to see. I honestly think they were in the same category as Jo/Tinya or Mon-El/Tasmia. But to reveal that Shvaughn was essentially a stalker who changed their gender to get close to Jan really debased it.
  • I always love the issues where Jan lets loose and actually shows just how powerful he is. I mean, think about it - he could kill Superman in a heartbeat. He could've killed Darkseid and ended the Great Darkness Saga in one move. Luckily, his moral code is one of the strongest, but he could easily defeat any other Legionnaire. I think of that early 70's issue where he's about to kill Roxxas but can't - he just can't go against his own morality.
  • I was far less of a fan of Jan in PZH as they just turned him into a stoned airhead who stumbled around, never really did anything of any importance, and seemed completely clueless about any social interaction. When he suddenly turned into a mineral, that made things worse. Sadly, they were only starting to use him in a slightly interesting way at the end of the series.
  • And I really struggled when he turned heel at the end of Legion Lost. I get the reasoning but he just wasn't the character to do it to. It was so out of left field that it felt like something being done for shock value instead of story value.
Thoughts? What are your memories of Element Lad?
Next week we get to the end of the longest Legion title to ever exist and see what happens to the characters after that. See you next week!

2024.05.18 18:41 Nugget_bob211 Seasons ranked worst to best with a small review of each season (give your opinion in the comments if you want to or something)

This was originally a comment on a post from like 17 days ago or something, but I think it was too long because it didn't let me post the comment, so I decided to just make my own post
I'm halfway through rewatching the show, so this is my ranking so far, it might change though. Also, I didn't add clipshow episodes since I don't really consider them real episodes. I also added a little review to a few episodes that I thought could use it. anyways here's the ranking:
10 - Season 10 (awful, just awful. It's rarely funny, characters are just husks of what they used to be and they ran out of ideas by the time season 9 rolled around) best: The last one worst: TOW Estelle dies (This is my least favorite episode of the show even when taking clipshow episodes into consideration. I would've loved to see them take Joey dealing with the death of someone important in his life seriously, it would've been great. but instead they used Estelle's death for jokes, and with Phoebe of all characters. This episode genuinely makes me mad)
9 - Season 8 (I usually put the most meh/forgettable stuff at the bottom, but season 10 was so awful that it saves season 8 from being dead last) best: TOW Rachel has a baby [part 1] worst: idk, TOW the Stripper I guess (almost every episode in this season is the same quality. I just don't )
8 - Season 9 (it had more good stuff that I could remember than season 8 did, that's the only reason it's above it, still bad though) best: TOW Emma cries (It's actually not bad. There are some funny moments and the Ross and Joey storyline is actually really good) worst: TOW the sharks (Monica thinks Chandler watches shark porn... that's all you need to know)
7 - Season 6 (it has 3 of the best episodes in the show, but overall not too memorable. I didn't really like Elizabeth and I disliked Paul even more. TOW Unagi is also really overrated) best: TOW Ross got high worst: TOW the ring (I think, can't really remember this season too well)
6 - Season 5 (I used to have this as my number 3, but upon rewatch I realized that overall it's not that good. most episodes suffer from one or two storylines that drag it down. there aren't really THAT many standouts either) best: TOW Ross's sandwich (best episode in the show. There is exactly one joke that doesn't land and that's it, up there with some of the best breaking bad and better call saul episodes IMO) worst: TOW the Yeti
5 - Season 7 (I don't like Tag at all and some of the episodes are not that memorable, but when this season is good it is GOOOOD. I had a fairly hard time picking my favorite episode because there are like 6 of them that could all be my favorite) best: TOW Rachel's book worst: TOW all the cheesecakes
4 - Season 3 (I didn't like this one the first 2 times I watched it, but seeing it a third time made me realize how good it gets after the shit fest that is episodes 3 to 5. not too many standouts, but it's consistently good and has like the second best drama in the show) best: TOWithout the Ski trip worst: TOW the hypnosis tape
3 - Season 4 (This season is so funny. It might be the funniest season in the show. It also has a LOT of standout episodes, just to list a few: TOW the jellyfish, the 'cuffs, the ballroom dancing, the fake party, just to name a few) best: TOW the jellyfish (best season opener in the series. It's got good drama as well as being incredibly funny and overdramatic. TOW the fake party is a very close second, since it might just be the funniest episode in the entire series, even funnier than TOW Ross got high) worst: TOW the cat
2 - Season 1 (the show starts off really strong. Some of the main characters haven't completely found themselves yet, which makes one of them specifically more likeable. Phoebe is actually really likeable and funny. Ross isn't such a horrible person and is also funny. The jokes are good and all of the friends actually feel like friends who care about each other instead of just being terrible people like in season 10 for example) best: the best episode is probably TOW the Birth, but TOW the boobies is my personal favorite worst: TOW the fake Monica
1 - Season 2 (It's everything season 1 did good, and it's even funnier with probably the best drama in the show. there are a few stinkers here n there, but the sheer amount of standouts makes up for it. It's probably tied with season 4 for the funniest season in the show. The characters have found what works for them, but still feel like that isn't all that there is to them like in season 10 for example) best: TOW Eddie won't go worst: TOW the lesbian wedding (You can't call me a homophobe since I'm a lesbian myself)

2024.05.18 18:30 toniwax I don't know about you but I'm BUYING some land for my parents!

I don't know who started the trade, I don't know if we're gonna win, I don't know if roaring kitty is involved or not or if he doesn't care about this stock or if he really is behind his new posts on his account on X. I don't know if wall street started it to somehow in a bigger picture inflict somekind of very hard blow to retail traders like us maybe to prevent future attacks towards their monopoly. So many theories, so little answers!
What WE do know today is that THIS is REAL!
Yesterday was as beautiful as it was scary. Because yesterday, their sneaky attack on the market and on our communications at the same time was a confirmation that we have inflicted them some serious damage! THEY revealed themselves! WE brought the price of a highly shorted soon to be delisted stock from .04$ to 3.9$ do you know how much money they lost? A sh*t Ton! And even though their attack yesterday was impressive they had to lose another shit ton of money to execute it!
Yes, they are big and scary and Yes, they have a lot of money and they lie and cheat and manipulate the market and pay mainstream medias to sh*t on our favorite stock. And this week when we attacked them they had a big meeting all together in fancy suits in an office overlooking the Manhattan Skyline! They agreed, all together, to fight us to the death and they inflicted us a nice blow but WE are still alive, THEY are still suffering and at the end of the day they can pretend to be together on this one but they are ALL financial SHARKS! And believe me when I tell you that each one of these Hedge Funds have an exit plan strategy. They have a limit at how much they can lose. One of them didn't have a great year, one of them took a too big of a risk shorting this stock and ONE of them WILL break! They gonna eat each other alive!
WE NEED to break THEIR ALLIANCE! THEY NEED to doubt, not US!
They are doing it for ALL the wrong reasons, they want their boss to buy his THIRD F*CKING house in Florida. WE are doing it to save our lives and the lives of our loved ones.
I'm from FRANCE, My parents live in the south and they called me the other day and told me that they were going to be kicked out of the land they live on soon! They're going to be fine I'm sure and still enjoy their lifes but it does break my F*CKING heart that at their age after working all their lifes they can't have a home for themselves because everything is so damn expensive! You might be doing it to clean your wife's maxed out credit card or catch a breath on your over expansive student loan. Or you just want to buy yourselves a nice Lambo or the next FF 91 2.0, fine by me. We are putting our lifes in this game! This is our strength as much as our weakness! We are very emotional about it! So next time they turn down our communications, next time they attack us, close the charts, go to the mirror and look at it real good because I'm in there! we are ALL in there. We are all the same! All together! Bunch of hard working diamond pressurized apes!
The game is simple: BUY, DON'T SELL, SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS TO EVERYBODY AND REPEAT!
That's it! Now I don't know if we are going to win this! If they are going to crush us on MONDAY morning! Maybe! But I know that if I have the slightest chance of winning enough to buy my ageing parents some land, some HOME... then I AM NOT FCKING SELLING SHT! I AM BUYING MORE ACTUALLY! I'll be taking some extra hours at work this week and I'll be putting some more in this bad boy! I don't give a f*ck if I lose that money!
Because personally, I actually LOVE the stock! This is a great stock and a great story! So this weekend PREACH, my brothers, PREACH! Call your friends and families and tell them you LOVE the stock!
Love you all! Good luck! Godspeed! Hope your dreams and prayers comes true one day! See you in the trenches on Monday et TENEZ votre putain de ligne! 🪖

2024.05.18 18:24 DoublleA Can somebody use undetectable AI for me?

Sorry if this sounds selfish but this is really only a one time thing for a friend. I need someone to use there undetectable AI account to paraphrase this please.
IntroductionThe rise of fast food chains in the United States from 2000 to 2010 had an impact on both the culture and economy. This period saw an increase in obesity rates among Americans, which coincided with the growth of these eateries. In this essay we delve into the connection between the expansion of fast food franchises and the obesity epidemic examining factors that influence health. Through an analysis of data, health studies and relevant literature our goal is to provide an understanding of how consuming food has played a role in fueling obesity during this particular decade, in America. The Growth of Fast Food Chains
Between 2000 and 2010 there was a rise in the fast food industry. Popular chains such as McDonalds, Burger King and Subway expanded their reach by opening stores to meet the demand for budget friendly meals. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that the number of fast food eateries increased by around 20% during this timeframe (U.S. Census Bureau, 2011). This expansion made fast food more convenient for a range of people, including kids and teenagers.
Obesity Trends in the U.S. (2000 2010)
The prevalence of obesity in America has been on a trajectory during the early years of the 21st century. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the rate of obesity among adults rose from 30.5% in 2000 to 35.7% in 2010 (CDC, 2011). Similarly among children and teens aged between 2 and 19 years old obesity rates increased from 13.9% to 16.9% over that period. This continuous increase signals a concerning public health issue with impacts on illness rates, mortality rates and healthcare expenses.
The Impact of Fast Food, on Eating Habits
food is commonly known for its levels of calories, excessive saturated fats, sugars and sodium with little nutritional value. These aspects of food are closely associated with weight gain and obesity. Studies show that regular consumption of food is linked to consuming calories and maintaining poor eating habits (Bowman & Vineyard 2004). Research conducted by Pereira et al. (2005) revealed that individuals who ate food than twice a week were more likely to gain weight and develop insulin resistance compared to those who consumed it less frequently.
Influence of Socioeconomic Factors
The easy availability and affordability of food make it an attractive option for people with incomes. Fast food establishments are often concentrated in low income areas where residents have limited access to dining choices (Powell et al. 2007). This situation, referred to as "food deserts " , worsens the issue of obesity because disadvantaged groups tend to rely on food as their main source of nutrition.
Impact of Advertising and Promotion
The aggressive advertising tactics used by fast food companies also have a significant influence on eating behaviors particularly among young individuals, like children and teenagers.
Many businesses invest sums of money each year in marketing showcasing their products across platforms, like TV, the web and social networks. Kids are especially influenced by these strategies that highlight the appeal and ease of food reinforcing harmful dietary patterns early on.
The impact of obesity, on health is significant and variedObesity is a factor in chronic illnesses like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and certain cancers (Flegal et al., 2012). The rise in obesity rates has led to an increase in health issues putting a strain on the healthcare system. The financial implications of obesity are also noteworthy with studies indicating that medical costs linked to obesity made up around 10% of healthcare expenses in the United States during that time (Cawley & Meyerhoefer 2012).
Policies and public health effortsIn response to the escalating obesity crisis, different policies and public health efforts have been put into action at state and local levels. These initiatives aim to encourage eating habits through measures like food labeling requirements, restrictions on advertising foods to children and campaigns raising awareness about the risks of obesity (Koplan et al., 2007). Schools have been a point for intervention well, with endeavors to enhance the nutritional value of school meals and boost physical activity among students.ExamplesVarious real life examples and stories showcase the effectiveness of taking action to address the issue of obesity. For example, New York City put in place a set of strategies to combat obesity, such as displaying calorie information on menus and prohibiting trans fats in restaurant dishes. These initiatives led to improvements in people's eating habits and a slight decrease in obesity levels, within the community (Dumanovsky et al. 2011).ChallengesThe obesity epidemic still poses challenges despite the efforts to address it. Unhealthy eating habits deeply ingrained in society, the presence of the fast food industry and disparities in status all add layers of complexity to this issue. Moving forward it is crucial to focus on creating an environment that encourages choices for vulnerable communities. This entails advocating for policies that restrict the marketing of foods to children, enhancing access to options in low income areas and urging food companies to improve the health profile of their products.
Psychological marketingWhen it comes to food marketing companies go beyond advertising tactics by leveraging deep rooted psychological triggers that influence consumer behavior. Bright colors, catchy tunes and recognizable mascots are commonly used in food ads to build a memorable brand image. This technique is particularly effective with audiences like children and teenagers who're more susceptible and likely to develop lasting brand loyalties. Research indicates that exposure to these advertisements can lead children to prefer calorie, nutrient foods ultimately impacting their dietary decisions and contributing to weight gain (Boyland & Halford 2013).The impact of portion sizes
One overlooked but significant factor contributing to the obesity crisis is the increasing sizes of portions served by food chains. Over time portion sizes have substantially grown, with meals exceeding the recommended calorie intake for a single meal. Young and Nestles (2002) study reveals that fast food item portions have expanded over the years with some items now more than double their size. This phenomenon of "portion distortion" results in calorie consumption as individuals tend to eat when faced with larger servings often underestimating the actual caloric content.
Changes in lifestyle and time constraints
The contemporary way of life characterized by schedules and time limitations has also played a role in the heightened dependence on fast food. With an increase in dual income households and longer work hours many people find themselves lacking the time to cook meals. Fast food emerges as a solution offering cost effective options that align with busy routines. Nonetheless this convenience comes at a price as frequent consumption of food is linked to dietary patterns and increased calorie intake contributing to the surge in obesity rates (Smith, Ng & Popkin 2013).Another significant measure involves restricting the promotion of foods to children. By reducing kids exposure to food ads policymakers aim to lessen the impact of marketing on their eating habits. Some cities have also imposed taxes on beverages and unhealthy foods in an effort to discourage consumption through penalties. While the effectiveness of these strategies may vary they mark progress in combating the obesity crisis.
Approaches Rooted in Communities
Community based strategies for addressing obesity highlight the importance of initiatives and grassroots movements. Programs that concentrate on enhancing access to foods encouraging activity and educating community members about healthy eating have shown positive outcomes. For example community gardens and farmers markets can offer produce to residents living in areas with access to healthy food options promoting better dietary choices. Schools and community centers can also play a role by providing nutrition education and physical activity programs.
The Impact of Technology
Technology has increasingly become an asset in the battle against obesity. Mobile applications and wearable gadgets enable individuals to monitor their calorie intake and exercise levels offering feedback and motivating lifestyle choices.
Furthermore social networking sites can play a role, in advocating for public health initiatives and sharing details on diet and wellness. Although technology isn't a solution to the issue of obesity it provides avenues to involve people and groups in embracing healthier habits (Stephens & Allen 2013).
Future Directions and Recommendations
The approach to tackling obesity needs to be multi-faceted and should involve collaboration between government departments, health workers, local communities, as well as the food industry. In future, there is need for more efforts in creating an atmosphere that supports healthier selections particularly among the disadvantaged groups. This means that one should continue to campaign for policies aimed at reducing children’s exposure to unhealthy food advertisements, improving availability of healthy foods in deprived neighborhoods and encouraging manufacturers in the food sector to change their products into a healthier version.
Further still public health campaigns will try and focus on having balanced diets regularly done exercises. Schools and offices can succeed by developing well-structured meals alongside opportunities for exercising. More research is also needed to understand why some people are poor eaters or overweight than others.
Policy Proposals
To further combat the menace of overweight, policy makers should think about enacting a variety of evidence-based strategies. Some of them could be: Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Taxes: Taxes on sugary drinks can decrease consumption and raise funds for public health projects. Zoning Regulations: By controlling the number of fast food restaurants in given areas, intake will subside and encourage establishment of grocery stores among other healthier alternatives.Menu Labeling Laws: This makes sure that restaurants indicate calorie counts as well as other nutritional information to assist customers in making informed choices. School Nutrition Standards: Schools meals and snacks in the course of learning ought to meet recommended nutrition levels so that students are eating healthy. Addressing Behavioral FactorsBehavioral interventions also play a significant role in dealing with obesity. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and other psychological approaches aid individuals to develop better eating habits and deal with triggers involved in overeating. Programs addressing weight control which incorporate behavior change counseling together with diet and exercise components show promise towards helping individuals achieve successful long term weight loss.Long-Term Commitment and Sustainable Change
Society must collectively make a commitment that will last over a long period to reduce obesity rates. The approach should be ongoing and flexible enough to accommodate changing circumstances and new information. For this change to be lasting, there must be continuous investment in public health infrastructure, research, and education. Therefore, significant strides can be achieved in reducing obesity rates by nurturing a culture that appreciates wellness.
Cultural Shifts and Public Perception
In addressing the obesity epidemic another critical factor is shifting public opinion as well as cultural norms with regards to food and health. The acceptance of fast food and oversize portions as normative has been one of the major drivers towards unhealthy eating habits over the past few decades. This would involve public health campaigns focused on what constitutes healthy balanced meals and promoting on good home cooked fresh meal benefits instead. To change public perception cooking classes nutrition workshops media campaign advertising preparation advantages of healthy meals at home for instance.
Strengthening Health Care Interventions
Routine screenings, counseling and support for weight management by health care providers are crucial in handling obesity. Obesity prevention and treatment should be integrated into primary care to ensure consistency and comprehensiveness in people’s health. Personalized advice can be availed by the healthcare practitioners and also set realistic targets as well as referring patients to dietitians or structured weight loss programs.
Advancing Research and Use of Proven Practices
To better understand the intricate contributors to obesity and curate effective interventions, it is important to sustain research. Longitudinal studies that follow diet patterns, activity levels, and disease outcomes offer useful information on how to prevent or reduce obesity. By exploring behavioral, environmental and genetic factors that affect obesity, this will enable us to make interventions that are specific for different populations and situations as well.
Conclusion
The period between 2000 and 2010 registered a sharp increase of obesity rates that is closely linked to the spread of fast food outlets across America. This public health menace can only be fought with multidimensional approaches that will change public attitude, improve education, enhance corporate accountability and support inclusive research plus health care interventions. By creating an environment where good health is appreciated through provision of necessary resources and support, we can achieve significant milestones in curbing cases of obesity within our population as well as overall improvement in their welfare.

2024.05.18 18:19 SimbaTheSavage8 Helena Sword (An Incomplete Potential NS 1)

Last night my university appeared on the news.
As I watched the broadcast, listening to my old television set sputter and cough like a used car engine, I swore the temperature plummeted several degrees. The newscaster was still droning on in the background but it could’ve just been static. Meaningless.
It is always the same with this news broadcast. Burned and charred stone and concrete lying around in a pentagon in a way that could make any abstract artist proud. I try, whenever it comes up, to ignore everything scrolling on the screen. Or at the very least, skim through the programme. The less details I remember, the better.
But every time, my eyes are drawn to one tiny thing on the screen. It stands out screaming, a splash of red in an ocean of black. I can’t forget it no matter how hard I try, and it slips into my nightmares and I wake up screaming.
A rune of a blood-stained sword, inked in red and carved neatly in the stone.
“This is our pride and joy,” he nodded, gesturing to a rune of a blood-stained sword. His sunflower name badge read James and he was cute. Tousled hair, playful freckles–the works.
I swear girls swooned when they saw him.
The year was 2004 and I wished fighting over James was the least of our problems. Even now, during orientation week, a great hush fell over our little tour group. Everyone shifted their feet nervously and tied their fingers into knots.
James laughed.
“The stories about Helena Sword? That’s just it. Stories.”
“All the stuff you heard about her before you came here, they’re simply not true. Just something stupid to scare the freshies, that’s all.”
He trailed off in the middle of his speech, staring off into the distance.
“It’s been a thousand years after all…”
He laughed again, but it was as empty as the wind blowing down the halls. He cracked a smile, but his face was pale like the rest of us.
“Anyway,” he said, “the library is just down this hallway too. When our founder, Sir Gallus, founded this place, he sought out books from all over the world…”
As the rest of the tour moved on, I couldn’t help but stay behind. I was no archeologist, but there was something about this rune that would not let me go. I stroked the rune, fascinated by how my fingers crossed tall ridges and tiny valleys. It was very simply carved, almost like a child’s drawing of a sword brought to life, but as I turned to catch up with everyone else, I realised I wasn’t alone.
She was pretty, a girl around my height and build, with striking red curls and a rather long neck, almost like a giraffe. A tattoo poked out behind long blue sleeves, dressed in red ink. The girl turned to me and grinned sheepishly.
“Are you lost?”
I frowned. “Sorry?”
“The tour group moved on without you,” she stated, pointing ahead. Indeed I could hear James’ voice in the distance, rambling on about the portraits in the halls. I looked back at her and she nodded grimly.
“My name is Ginny,” she said, extending her hand. I shook it. It was as cold as ice. In fact, when I looked at her, it was like gazing at an ice sculpture, with frosty eyes and dainty lips.
“It’s my first day here too. Except well…my parents brought me here yesterday. So I know this school inside out. Do you want me to show you around? You don’t need that tour group. Especially since they well…abandoned you.”
My head was suddenly foggy. “Yes, please,” I mumbled.
In spite of her offer, Ginny didn’t say much as we walked through the campus. Didn’t point out anything interesting landmarks or anything like that; didn’t talk much about herself either. Instead we wandered through the grounds, enjoying each other’s company. It was the beginning of autumn, and golden leaves were falling down and the trees looked like they were on fire. Overhead we could hear migrating birds singing. It was lovely.
Eventually we reached my dorm.
And hers.
Ginny was my roommate. I found it strange, since I didn’t recall having a roommate or asking for one; and even if I did, wouldn’t I be informed of it months ago? Someone that I would share my life with for the next three years? But then she looked at me and smiled and all my questions flew out of my head. I mumbled a yes to her offer of assistance and we spent the rest of the afternoon making our dorm look like home.
Then we went down for dinner and were joined in the mess hall by two other girls, Ivy and Cleo, who told us their room would be next door to us. We sat down with our mashed potatoes and roast chicken and they immediately drummed up conversation, talking about their lives before they came to university, what they hoped to achieve during their time here, and everything in between.
“So what are you guys studying?” Ivy asked.
“Psychology,” I said. Helping people has always been a lifelong dream.
“Computer Science,” Ivy and Cleo said at the same time.
We all looked at Ginny. She stared back, completely taken aback by the question.
“Um,” she said, “Computer Science too, I suppose. That’s getting popular, right?”
“Yup,” Ivy mumbled, her head bowed over her mashed potatoes like a broken flower. “Everyone is fighting to get their slice of the Internet these days…”
We continued our meal in silence, the conversation suddenly over. We walked up together, too, and it felt strangely uncomfortable. A dark cloth had fallen over our little group, leaving behind an itch we could never scratch.
Finally we reached our dorms and we looked at each other.
“Well, good night then,” Ivy said. Cleo was already inside and I could hear her brushing her teeth.
“See you at breakfast.”
“Good night,” I said. Ivy nodded and closed the door.
Ginny was already in her bunk, her nose in a book. There was already a stack next to her, as tall as a mountain, and by the glare in her eyes, passionate and intense as fire, it looked like she was going to be reading all night.
“Don't classes start next week?” I asked with a frown.
“Yeah,” Ginny said distractedly. Her eyes were glued to the pages and she was flipping through them so fast her hands were a blur. “Just wanted to get started so I’ll be well-prepared, that’s all.”
She peered down at me, her icy blue eyes fixated on my muddy brown ones. “Go to bed. We have a big day tomorrow.”
“Yeah, I guess,” I mumbled, and soon I slipped away from the real world for a world of restless dreams.
For some reason, I woke up in the middle of the night.
I got my torch from under the bed and checked the time on my alarm clock. 4am.
Great.
I lay down on my pillow with my eyes open. I strained my ears, listening out for the sounds of nature. Back home there were birds that sang no matter what time it was, porcupines and rats scavenging around our trash, and crickets that performed symphonies that lulled me into slumber.
But out here there was nothing.
Great.
I couldn’t even hear my roomie. I didn’t really peg Ginny as the type who snored, but her bunk felt…empty. I peered upwards and couldn’t make out her shapeless form huddled beneath her blankets. Books were strewn all over her bunk, their pages wide open like the wings of lost paper birds.
I yawned and squeezed my eyes shut. It was too early to do anything and as Ginny said, we had a lot of things to do tomorrow.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehh!!
It sounded like nails on a chalkboard. Or rather, that of a clawed hand scraping down someone’s flesh, their hooked nails peeling off their skin in strips.
I groaned and smashed my pillow against my ears, but even my fluffy shield did nothing to muffle the loud screeches that rattled from my ears down my spine and to my toes.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehh!!
I couldn’t ignore it any longer. I wobbled out of bed, clutching the bed frame as the world spun in front of my eyes. I breathed deep as another eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhh screamed in my eardrums, making my hair stand on end.
Then I heard someone scream.
Was that Ginny? An image tore through my mind of my roommate in the corner, slowly strangled by rusty iron chains that curled around her body like venomous snakes. I know I shouldn’t open the door–it is a critical mistake made by so many horror movie heroines–but the thought of Ginny, alone, made my heart shiver.
So I yanked open the door.
There was Ginny, frozen like a popsicle stick. The shadows gathered and morphed into a hooded figure that blanketed her bodice.
Something—someone—slithered towards her, dragging behind a long blade. Eeeeeeeeeeeh
Ginny opened her mouth. Was she screaming?
But no, the silhouette brushed up against her skin and whooshed right past her, disappearing into the dorms. Ginny looked over, saw me screaming, then ran over and knocked me back in the room, locking the door shut.
“Are you okay?” she asked urgently.
I nodded a yes. Everything I felt at that moment couldn’t be put into words. It was dammed somewhere in the back of my throat, fighting to get out.
But I just couldn’t.
“What did you see?”
Nothing. Just nothing. My mind was blank. Everything was a hazy mess zooming around through my neural pathways. I sat down and rubbed my head. The room was spinning out of focus.
I needed to sleep.
“Yeah, sleep tight,” Ginny said kindly, pushing my blanket up to my neck. I curled up like a cooked prawn and breathed in deep. It smelled like home.
“Good night, Ginny,” I mumbled.
“Good night.”
We woke up to a sea of noisy chatter. It sounded like a thousand parrots squawking at the same time.
Eyes closed, mine still hazy, I stretched—and immediately bumped my head against the wooden frame.
Ow.
People were talking—no, shouting. It rang in my ears like a bloodcurdling scream. I groaned and attempted to muffle it with my pillow above my ears. Why do people have to be so goddamn loud?
Finally I gave up and sat up straight, forcing my crusty eyes open. Ginny was already gone, and her nightgown was draped across the top bunk like a country flag. The door was creaking in the wind. It slammed against the wall and came back strong.
Ow
Ginny came back. Without a word she took me by the arm and dragged me out of the room. There was a crowd mulling outside Ivy and Cleo’s dorm and as we passed I could hear snippets of their conversation:
“Dead…”
Ginny marched past them and took me down the stairs and to the mess hall, her eyes staring straight ahead like the world had vanished around her. Then she sat me down on one of the benches, took a sip of water and stared at me, her face white and shaking.
“WHAT?”
Even in the foggy haze of sleep, the bizarreness of the morning and the crowds outside the dorms were getting to me. All I had was questions, and I hated having so many questions.
For the first time since I met her, Ginny’s eyes didn’t meet mine. “So uh, you know the guy leading you around yesterday? When we first met?”
The description scratched my memory, and then I remembered. Tall and lanky, with tousled brown hair, freckles and a charming smile. He had a sunflower lanyard pinned on a checkered shirt–and that badge contained a name.
“James?”
“He…”. Ginny took a deep breath.
“He is dead. They found his body this morning.”
Ginny was still talking but I was barely listening. I only met this boy yesterday but it felt like I knew him forever. I felt like I was being pulled under, my reality torn asunder, everything that I know just…shattering around me.
Dead?
My throat was dry. Closing up. I sounded like a strangled cat.
“Yes,” Ginny confirmed dryly.
I looked at the two empty seats opposite me and that momental wave of dizziness turned into nausea.
“Bathroom,” I said.
Ginny watched me go, unblinking.
I rushed to the first unlocked toilet I found, ignoring the glares of girls already in queue. I gagged and watched my dinner and what little of my breakfast I had eaten swirl down the bowl. Then I flushed and staggered out. Everything was lit up way too bright; the chattering of students heading to their classes was way too loud; and I sat down in the corridor and closed my eyes.
I wasn’t sure how long I was out, because the next thing I knew someone was shaking me awake and helping me on my feet
“Come on,” Ivy said.
Her voice was brittle, her face pale. She was as fragile as stained glass, and she could barely walk herself. We limped together, nearly tripping over each other as we went up the stairs, until we collapsed, tangled between each other in a rope of legs.
That was when I felt something sharp brush across my cheek, drawing blood.
I looked up to see a hooded figure standing above us, wearing black gloves and a cloak made out of human skin. Her eyes were glowing crimson as she raised the sword. Rust gleamed at its sides like dew.
The sword slammed down, nearly missing Ivy’s leg.
We looked at each other, barely breathing, barely a word said between us. Then as if on command we got up and hightailed it back to our dorms. Through the shadows as we ran I could see a girl my age watching.
Her red curls shone in the dark like fire.
Ivy slammed the door behind us and shoved chairs up the edge to boot. I wasn’t sure it could hold a sword slicing through a wooden door but it would have to do.
Ivy sat on the bed and closed her eyes, whispering prayers in her native language. I didn’t feel like talking either
Author's Notes
If I remember correctly, this one is about a student who haunts the university 300ish years after her death. She is a witch, immortal and summoned by touching ruins. Her main weapon is the titular sword and instead of wielding it herself she hypnotises other students to kill for her.
The next scene is Cleo framed for killing James, the first sinister look at her powers of hypnosis.
The ending reveals that Ginny (taken from Ginerva, a romanized version of Queen Guinevre, yes me and JK Rowling had the same line of thinking) and Helena Sword is the same person and hypnotising all the other students. She dies when the narrator burns the school to the ground accidentally while trying to get away, ending the curse and resulting in the ruins at the start of the flashback.

2024.05.18 18:17 Timpanzee38 Argus Isle's Isolation, Part 1 (Siege of Kabaheim prelude)

Airspace above Argus Isle. Mercenary Guild Territory
Wind buffeted The Agent as he leaned out of the gunship and looked down. The gunship was hovering above the clouds directly over Argus isle. The Guild needed to figure out what was happening with the storm that had completely isolated the faraway outpost, and this was the best idea they had come up with for getting a team in. Didn't mean The Agent liked it. The gunship's co-pilot tapped him on the shoulder.
"You've done this same maneuver before! Just like Fort Intrepid, except we can't see the ground!"
"That's what I'm worried about!" The Agent shouted back "We've got no idea what's happening down there!"
The co-pilot just shrugged and gave him a thumbs up. "Whenever you're ready!"
The Agent took a deep breath and looked down at the maelstrom below him. He did not like this, but orders were orders... One last glance at the gunship, and he leaped off. He plummeted down into the clouds. Pulling All-Red from his back, he cut a path through the clouds. The clouds were thick, almost like they were made of a honey-like substance, but All-Red made short work of it. 1 minute later The Agent broke through the clouds like a red meteor and slammed into the ground in a small fruit grove. He took a few steps out of the crater and looked around.
Just then 2 figures spilled out of his shadow. They were the other members of the team, Umbra Operatives E-137 "Saffron" and C-569 "Edward". Saffron immediately tore off her helmet and puked.
"This... is why... I stick to the ocean..." she mumbled before sliding her helmet back on.
"Well your wish will be granted" The Agent told her. He looked up at the incessant rain and quickly reviewed the plan in his mind. Edward would link up with the Umbra Operatives that were already present on the island when the storm first arrived. Saffron would link up with the sirens that had been secretly stationed here as part of the defenses, then check on the integrity of the Argus Artillery Apparatus (AAA). The Agent would go directly to the commander in charge and find out what was happening. They all knew their roles, and with a quick nod, Saffron and Edward faded off into the shadows of the trees.
The Agent made his way south towards the only population center on the island. He had landed in the northern highlands, so he got a good lay of the land as he made his descent. The city seemed intact, though he noticed a few shipwrecks on the coast. Off the western coast on it's own small island, the AAA looked fine as well. The AAA was a massive railgun that fired rounds at a fraction of the speed of light. It couldn't move though, and relied on portals to line up a shot. It was the shadow council's belief that whoever was making this storm wanted to prevent the AAA's use, destroy it, or capture it...
As he made it to the city limits, a Guild patrol in full hazmat suits met him on the road. They immediately recognized him.
"Oh! It's The Agent! You were the red comet we saw fall?"
"Yes, that was me, I need to see your commanders ASAP."
"Of course sir! Follow us!"
As they made their way through the city, The Agent noticed how empty it was. No civilians were in sight, with windows everywhere boarded up.
"Where is everyone?" The Agent asked the sergeant.
"Martial law has been declared, with everyone ordered to the emergency shelters. Except for shelter 7, as that's in the quarantine sector."
"Quarantine sector?"
"It's the rain sir, anyone who ingests it seems to turn into a... husk of themself... all those found infected have been quarantined... the higher ups know more"
They soon arrived at the Guild headquarters building, and The Agent was quickly was quickly ushered in to a war room. Standing in there was Commander Kate Reed, along with a dozen other officers. They all quickly saluted The Agent, then got to business.
...
"So to recap, the storm arrived suddenly 1 week ago, it hasn't stopped raining, and anyone who ingests the rain becomes a...husk?"
"Correct" commander Reed told The Agent. "We quickly realized it was the rain doing it, and ordered all the civilians into the emergency shelters, where they would be safe from it and have access to secure, untainted water reserves. Many were infected though, which is why we moved them all to a certain sector of the city and quarantined them there. We can't get any message to the outside world, and portals don't work. All ships that have tried to brave the storm wash up a day later as a shipwreck. We haven't tried aircraft for that reason.
"Hmm... Okay, but the AAA seems fine?"
"Yes, but of course with portals not working, it's useless-"
Just then an aide burst into the room. "Ma'am, sorry to interrupt, but a patrol just found something. Down on the beach near the AAA, they found a washed up siren. Looks like The Agent here, but she is completely unresponsive!
"WHAT!" The Agent shouted. Saffron had gone to check the AAA's integrity, but what happened- Then it hit him. The rain. Ingesting the rain made people into husks. The rain was mixing with the water. Saffron was breathing the water when she went to check the underwater sections...
Shit...

2024.05.18 18:14 MechaBOI42069 Now that we're nearing the end of support, I thought it would be a good idea to make one last push and repost the big bug list. Please Frontier, fix these bugs before moving onto JWE 3.

This list contains bugs that range from game breaking, to near insignificant. All are included as it would be nice to see most if not all of these fixed. More important bugs are higher on the list.
I'm asking for your help to note any I may have missed and to forward these to Frontier. The game is ending support soon and it would be a shame if these bugs never get fixed.

If there are any bugs I have missed, please do post them in the comments below and I'll add them to the list.

Gameplay Bugs:
  1. Concavenator has a broken fence climb animation that causes it to escape through any fence, even if it fails
  2. Pterosaurs when flying over lagoons sink into them and have trouble escaping
  3. Pterosaurs in general still seem to be getting stuck quite often, causing them to starve and die
  4. The species viewer seems to have a memory leak going on, as it lags more and more the longer you use it
  5. When you have nothing selected in the bulk demolish menu, everything you hover over will be highlighted red
  6. The day-night cycle can cause quite some lag on lower end machines, especially during dusk
  7. There's severe FPS drops when the day/night cycle is active, especially during dusk

  20. Scorpios Rex does not do its custom struggle animation against medium carnivores anymore, only on other Scorpios Rex
  21. Archelon is for some reason counted as a small marine in the hatchery, despite the Nothosaurus that is half its size being counted as a medium

2024.05.18 17:49 ARadioactivetoaster The Forgotten Trial: Chapter Two

Werthin crouched low on the evening watch crag, the setting sun turns the sky a burning gold. The cold fall wind whipped his light gray fur and carried a strange, pungent scent. He lifted his stance to get his nose more into the wind. It wasn't the familiar tang of industry from the beavers nor the energizing hum of golden chi. This smell was raw and primal – the unmistakable odor of. “Death.”
The rest of the pack started to smell it too, Werthin could see a few thousand heads turn and sniff the air, wisps of condensation visible in the sunset. The pack had decided a unified action was taken, knowing what that meant he flexed his exposed chest, his abs rippling his fur, as he leaned up onto two feet and let out a howl. Every wolf lifted their head and joined into the harmony of their voices. The one that carried the loudest was the wolves current leader, Wutzel.
The howling died down when a lone speedor was spotted far on the horizon, a small dust cloud following it. Werthin climbed down and dashed through the maze of tents and other impermanent residencies to a wooden watchtower where his fiance Worina was crouched low, a knocked arrow tracing the rider as the zig-zagged their way towards the camp, tendrils of steam rising from her steady breath.
“Who is it?” Werthin whispered.
Without breaking her concentration, she spat. “Lion, although I have no idea which one is stupid enough or suicidal enough to approach our tribe completely alone.” Even crouching , he was a few centimeters taller than Werthin, her maple fur broken up by much lighter pale vitiligo patterns. Her arms were shaking from the strain of keeping her bow knocked and taught.
Other wolves had taken notice of the speedor and had started to get into defensive positions. As the speedor did a wide loop around the camp, Wutzel ordered the wolves to stand ready but relax. Werthin jumped down and stood next to Wutzel. He had shifted the holster for his double-sided sword to the quick-draw position, although he felt exposed without his armor on.
The rider pulled a hard stop just inside the entrance of the camp. They were a young lion with a dapper yellow and red fur pattern. They looked and smelled 20 at the oldest. Their heavy blue plate armor and crown marked them as royal. He held himself like a prince, even when staring down the entire wolf tribe. If it was not for an ugly sneer with a nose upturned in disgust, he may have even been considered handsome.
Wutzle barked an order, and five wolves lowered their spear and barred their teeth at the lion. The lion put up their paw in response, trying to show he meant no harm, but his sneer was not at all reassuring. He took in a deep breath and glared at every single wolf, seeming to calculate his odds if a fight broke out. “Who is your leader, if you are even civilized enough to have one?” He muttered coldly.
Multiple wolves lurched forward, hackles raised and fangs showing, but Wutzel snarled a warning, and they backed up but kept the aggressive mirthless smile. Wutzel himself did not look amused at the insult, but he stepped forward. “I guess you can say I am. Which means I am the one that decides if you live or die for trespassing.” Wutzel stood as tall as he could, but he still had to look up to make eye contact.
“Good. I am Prince Leyan of the lions… Why did you kill my dad?” The prince gave a look of pure anger and hatred.
Wutzel’s muzzle started to quiver in anger, his eyes burning red. The rest of the wolves looked like they were just waiting for the signal to kill this lion. “How dare you come into our home accusing us of murder with no evidence! How absolutely suicidal are you? I should have you killed for such an insult!”
The threat didn’t seem to phase Leyan at all. Two strides were taken to get right in the face of Wutzel. The height difference between them was now much more apparent, with the lion towering half a meter above the wolf's leader. “No evidence!? I have all the evidence in the world! It was no secret that you hated him and would do everything you could to rule Chima! So tell me: why did you kill him?”
Wutzel’s ears dropped back, and his pupils dilated. Spit flew from his mouth as he seethed. He kept opening his mouth to speak, but he seemed incapable of finding words strong enough to express the hatred he felt. When he spoke, all that came out was a cold and barely audible. “Kill him.”
Werthin drew his dual-bladed staff and stepped forwards, the humming of the energized edges rung out. Other wolves, some with spears and others with guns, also stepped forward. The prince drew his greatsword as his eyes narrowed into slits. He dropped into a defensive fighting stance, with as much armor and blade between him and the blades leveled dangerously at him. His terror was clear as day, though. His knuckles’ fur was spreading from how tight his grip was, and his breathing was irregular and short.
Werthin dropped into his fighting stance, his blade held close to him, and his chest turned as perpendicular to his opponent as he could manage while still facing him. His current lack of body armor made him incredibly nervous because one lucky hit would be it for him.
The whole wolf tribe was about to pounce on the lion prince when Worina’s voice rang out in warning. “Second speedor inbound! Another lion!”
Wutzel put up his hand to get every wolf to pause as the second speedor whirred up. It stopped, and a much younger lion dismounted, a crown also marking him as royal. This one was in similar armor but with a chain undershirt and a lighter torso plate. Emerald green eyes shone with panic out from behind his glasses. His fur was much darker than his brethren, a dark brown with lighter red highlights in his growing mane. He ran to the side of his fellow lion and tugged on his shoulder. “Leyan! What are you doing!?” His voice quivered with fear.
Leyan shrugged him off. “Avenging our father Laith, now get out of here, you are not capable of handling this.” There was a collective tension and hesitation that rose in all the wolves as they realized that they now had both of the lion princes to deal with. Wutzel broke down into unchecked anger as the new lion stared him down. “Your brother comes waltzing into our land and accuses us of killing your father! He then insults our entire pack! By all rights of the moon, he is ours to deal with, boy. Leave now before we are forced to kill you as well!”
The tension and anger in the pack were thick enough to chew on. The steam rising from the breath of the wolves gave them an almost ghostly look. Their collective eyes darted from the lions to their leader, awaiting a command.
“Please brother! Come home! I am just as hurt as you, but that is no excuse to get yourself killed!” The younger lion pleaded, his voice cracking from stress. "This is how you change everything for the worse!”
Leyan glared at his brother, his teeth barred and his body shaking with fury. “No one needs to hear your words!”
Laith also drew his sword, a narrower tachi whose edges glowed blue with chi energy. The wolves turned their attention to him, but instead of turning to face them, he turned to his brother. Regret was etched into his face as he unsteadily gripped the blade. “I don’t want to hurt you, but I will do what I have to to make sure you are safe.”
His brother’s face flashed surprise at the actions but returned to his rage as he pointed his blade tip between Laith’s eyes. Laith took a step back, the scent of fear wafting off him. “You are still a coward.” Leyan hawked at Laith.
Wutzel snarled, clearly having enough of their crap. “The sibling conflict is awfully cute, but you two are still trespassing on our home. I'll give you two 30 seconds to leave before I let my family have dinner.”
The two lions stared at each other, no words exchanged, but they were clearly having a very in-depth conversation. Laith was doing his best to look big, but his eyes were still darting around, his tachi being shifted from one hand to another. Leyan still looked murderous but seemed to be slowly coming to his senses, as his posture got more and more relaxed as they stared at each other. Wutzel kept tapping his foot and counting out loud. “15 seconds!”
The lions came to some sort of agreement because Leyan sneered once more at the wolves as he turned and stepped onto his speedor. “I will prove to everyone what you did.” He shouted as his ride hummed to life, and he took off. Laith still smelled like fear as he scanned the crowd of wolves with a look of sorrow. His voice was quiet and hurt. “I am sorry…” He then got onto his own speedor and took off after his brother.
Werthin sheathed his blade with a muted shing. He turned to look at the still hatred filled face of Wutzel. They made eye contact, and both of their expressions went deathly grim. “So that's… who's going to..?” Werthin muttered darkly. The rest of the wolves discussed everything that just happened as they slowly relaxed and went back to what they were doing.
Wutzel nodded solemnly. “We are in for one hell of a ride.”
