So many numbers, so little time

2012.07.30 01:04 So many numbers, so little time

Many physicians, mid-level providers, practice managers, administrators, billers and front desk staff members have questions about coding. Today's demand for certified professional coders (CPCs) is growing as many jobs in the coding and billing field now require certification. Health care professionals involved in coding, compliance, billing, administration and reimbursement aspects of medicine should be certified as part of a compliance program.

2024.05.21 20:38 jaybhum I made my first Flutter app to solve loneliness. 14,000 minutes of voice messages later:

I hope you are doing better today than yesterday. (TLDR at the end; or enjoy my story :) )

Why:

About 11 months ago, I launched my app for the first time on lonely because I had previously experienced loneliness myself during grad school. I wanted to reach out to people going through similar experiences by providing them with what would’ve helped me in the past.
I felt this was an important mission for me and a much more rewarding one than my day job that I quit my job to work on the app full-time.
It was necessary because I did not come from a programming background. I knew how to program in the sense of running scientific simulations on MATLAB, but creating the front-end and back-end for a consumer app was totally new to me, so I had to learn from scratch.
I enjoyed everyday going to a cafe to learn from programming crash courses on YouTube, developing the app little by little, and eventually launching the app! The initial response was actually pretty great: 220 upvotes for the app launch post, which I proudly pinned in my bio :)

How:

I made the app to be based on voice, and nothing else: no profiles, no profile photos, and even no texts. The reason for that was I felt a lot of people felt lonely and had trouble finding meaningful online connections because of the modern communication medium which actually promotes superficial and viral contents over authentic and long-form contents. It is easy to see from examples: TikTok’s 30 second videos, Instagram’s eye-popping photos by beautiful people from the globe, and Twitter(X)’s 140-char spicy takes. Sure, these platforms offer us information about DIYs, trends, and news that can enrich our lives and entertain us, but they don’t by all means help us feel more connected to individuals. Even on Reddit, the contents tend to be more wholesome and there are hilarious comments that build on top of each other, but the actual sense of connection you feel with the users is tenuous.
Focusing on voice worked! It was incredible listening to the heartfelt messages from strangers from all over the world who opened up about their loneliness and didn’t mind being vulnerable to other strangers. I have personally spoke with everyone that came by. The 14k minutes of voice messages do not include my own voice messages; they are all messages that people left for their own posts, to each other, or as replies to me.

Highlights:

There were some incredible moments, which would be too long to share in this post (leave a comment if you want to hear more!), but some of the highlights were (note: these are all from public conversations):
What was also incredible was that there were not only people experiencing loneliness here, but also people who did not feel lonely but were on the app to support others going through loneliness. They would share stories and studies related to loneliness in their posts, and also try to talk to some lonely folks on the app who seemed very hardened by their experience of loneliness which made them cynical and pessimistic. The concept of compassionate listening by Thich Nhat Hanh and Polyvagal theory that explains 3 levels of our nervous system are a few things they mentioned that come to my mind. Unfortunately, these efforts by supporters were often, so to speak, ineffective in solving people’s loneliness.

What I learned:

And that was part of what made it so hard to have a sustainable ecosystem on my app: many people who have been lonely for a long period of time had their personalities and social skills hardened to the point that they either:
My hope for the app was to help people who experience loneliness find and support each other. By providing the platform for them to voice out their stories, have them be heard by others, and find others who resonate and reply, I thought they would finally find friends whom they can relate to, share their lives with, and would no longer have to feel lonely again.
However, the reality was that many were hardened by loneliness and it was hard for such connections to materialize. Plus, one of the main ways for an app like this to grow is by word of mouth. Unfortunately, most people experiencing loneliness did not have anyone to share the app with, which stunted the app’s growth and mostly depended on me manually bringing users onto the platform.
With fewer chances of having good interactions, even the people who really resonated with the app and shared stories slowly stopped coming back. Some just suddenly ghosted, which made the experience on the app painful for other engaged people on the app.

My hope for the future:

I still believe that there are more people out there experiencing loneliness who have the deep desire to share their stories and find the long-term friends across the globe who understand each other and can share slices of their lives with.
So, if you are someone that can benefit from sharing stories and solve your loneliness this way, feel free to check out my app at https://bubblic.app
Also, if you know of any way I can improve the app to better help people experiencing loneliness, please leave a comment.
Lastly, word of mouth would really help. If you like the app, or if you know someone who would benefit from the app, please share it with others!

TLDR:

I created an app focused on voice communication to help lonely people connect, inspired by my own experiences. Despite an encouraging start and meaningful interactions, many users struggled to form lasting connections due to the deep impact of their loneliness. Growth has been slow, mainly reliant on my efforts. If you know someone who might benefit, please share my app: https://bubblic.app. Feedback is also welcome! Tech stack used:

2024.05.21 20:38 BodybuilderNo4566 Medicare Part B/D dropped

We had to file a tax extension in 2022. My husband received his annual IRMA large bill and shortly after he got another bill with a totally different amount.
He finally got around to calling to see which amount was correct. He was told he did not owe anything. He asked if he could set up auto withdrawal for the annual IRMA as he does with his monthly payment at and he was told no not for the annual amount.
Apparently he called Medicare instead of social security who collects the IRMA (at least I think that is how it works). Then they cancelled his Part B and Part D. I did not see any notices warning him about this nor did he.
Does anyone know what will be accepted in the appeal letter? Or is there anything he can do? He is a retired firefighter and has all kinds of structural medical needs and we do not know how to navigate this process. Any help is most appreciated.
Thank you!

2024.05.21 20:37 AdObjective2726 Difference between Gut Instincts/Intuition and Anxiety/ROCD

Gut Instincts & Intuition vs Anxiety/ROCD
A lot of us spend time wondering whether its our OCD or gut talking to us. Sometimes we can feel our anxiety in our gut- literally. But this doesn’t mean it’s our “gut instinct”
I wanted to offer a perspective that I’ve gained during my healing journey.
First- intuition requires mental clarity. The opposite of clarity is anxiety or OCD. You have no access to your intuition in the midst of ocd/anxiety.
Anyway, I saw this video of Maddison Beer. She was talking about how she used her intuition to realize her ex was not the one. I found it hilarious when she said that (no hate.) it was funny because before saying it was her intuition that “guided” her- she was going through list of red flags she had noticed. He was awful to her, would only see her at night, etc. I’m so sorry but Maddison did not have a premonition. She had common sense. It was CLEAR as DAY. That this man was no good.
My point here is the word intuition is overused now. People don’t even know what they’re talking about when they use it. Be mindful of when you think of what the word refers to, for yourself and when others use it.
Here is a better example of gut feeling.
If there was a tiger walking by you, your gut instinct would tell you “$hit thats a tiger, run!”
Your ROCD/anxiety is more like - “ I think I saw a tiger out of the corner of my eye? I’m not sure. Maybe that was a tiger. Maybe I should run I’m not sure if there was actually a tiger.”
It’s an instinct or an intuition you will KNOW that there is a tiger. You’re not spending time worrying if the tiger is a nice tiger, or if the tiger was really there, or if the tiger saw you…
I really really hope this makes sense.

2024.05.21 20:36 Haunting_Safe_5386 ok, i think i get it correct me if i'm wrong. neurological disorder vs intellectual disorder mental illness vs mental disorder

Mental illness and mental disorder are often interchanged. HOWEVER, they are 2 different things.
Mental illness refers to a more severe conditions like PTSD, BPD, and Schizophrenia, and CANNOT be medicated or cured
Mental disorders are less severe like, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and personality disorders and CAN be medicated (ADHD for example) but CANNOT be cured
Neurological disability and intellectual disability are 2 distinct terms.
Neurological disability refers to a physical or functional impairment of the nervous system, like tourettes (sry if i misspelled), and autism and CANNOT be medicated or cured.
Intellectual disability refers to significant limitations in cognitive functioning, like, autism, down syndrome, and fragile X syndrome, and CAN be medicated, but CANNOT be cured

2024.05.21 20:36 srajdb 41 [M4F] Central AL - Fantasy writer looking for happy ending

I'm a medical software tech by day, aspiring fantasy novelist by night. I've been working on a fantasy piece for the past year. I've got the first draft completed, now the fun part comes next (revising). If you're into Narnia, Harry Potter, etc. then I'm sure you'll enjoy what I'm writing.Unfortunately writing doesn't pay the bills, so that's why I have my day job (medical software technician). I've been living by myself for the past year or so, and honestly it's pretty lonely with just a dog and a cat (I also have shared custody of my daughter). I don't do a lot of gaming these days, and I honestly don't watch a lot of television or movies (between work and writing, time is a rather hot commodity!) I do enjoy traveling and trying new food/drink but I don't much reason to do either as of late. I would like someone to give me a reason to go out, whether it's a week-long trip in another state (or even another country), or a night out on the town (I enjoy the symphony, Broadway show, or any other 'fancy' date). You don't have to be a 'dog' person, but I'm always going to have at least one. If I haven't turned you off yet, congratulations. I get that people are busy, but if you're not going to put any effort in conversations (i.e. say one or two words a day, or not bother saying anything at all) then don't bother replying to this. You're wasting two people's time and it's rude. Just so I know you've taken the time to at least skim through this, tell me if you've ever worn a pair of oxford heels.

2024.05.21 20:34 Putridlemons AITAH for requesting that my brother not leave blood stains all over the bathroom floor.

For some context, I (19F) live with my parents and my brother (22M). My parents share a bathroom, and unfortunately I have always been forced to use the same bathroom as my brother.
My brother is high-functioning autistic, while I am diagnosed with my own plethora of mental disorders & impairments, the one that affects me the most being Borderline Personality Disorder, developed due to the way my parents treated me or rather neglected my emotional needs as a child and consistently prioritized my brother over me. To the extent of sending me away to my grandparents house for the first 12 years of my life because my parents found it easier to send me away than have to punish my brother for the way he abused me in childhood and have to constantly hear my pleads for help.
Over the last 2-3 years there has been a consistent issue with my brother spending his "shower time" in the bathroom picking at his feet, and then walking across the bath mat we have in there and leaving blood stains all over it. I struggle heavily with the fear of "contamination" and coming in contact with another persons blood, vomit, defecation, or mucus is enough to send me over the edge into a breakdown, I find it absolutely disgusting and it's something that I can't break out of even with therapy or medication.
I have to consistently take the blood-covered bath mat out of the bathroom to avoid stepping on it when I get out of the shower and to avoid walking across it when I have to use the toilet. At least once a week I have to throw the mat into the garage for my dad to use peroxide to clean out the stains because I physically cannot do it without gagging and throwing up. My PHYSICALLY DISABLED dad is the person that always ends up having to clean out the blood stains from my brother, because my brother has mastered the art of weaponized incompetence.
He will stand there and act stupid, pretend not to know where things are or how to clean things properly to the point where my dad will just say "fuck it let me do it myself since you cant". He does this to get out of almost anything he doesn't want to do. My brother is high-functioning autistic, not slow or stupid. He is advanced and smart and most certainly capable. I have watched him manipulate my parents since I was a little kid and it infuriates me.
About a year ago I reached my breaking point with the bath mat. I went in the bathroom to use the shower and there were deep blood stains ALL over the mat, not even an inch of space that was safe for me to step on. This started to send me into a breakdown and pissed me off to the point of a rage episode. When I brought it up, my brother tried to gaslight my parents into believing that the blood stains were from my period, when I hadn't had a period in well over a year because I have been on progesterone (a pill that prevents a period) since the beginning of 2023. Not to mention even if I was having my period, it's not like I would be free bleeding in the bathroom and leaving a bunch of toe-print stains all over the bath mat. TMI but I used tampons, it's not like when I had a period I was experiencing leakage.
Then, when the period excuse didn't work on my parents, he started to try and manipulate them into believing that me leaving a hairbrush/toothbrush on the counter, or having a bottle of shampoo in the shower, or sometimes leaving a shirt or towel on the floor (I would put a shirt or towel over the bathmat to avoid stepping in blood) was somehow equal and justified to him leaving blood all over the floor, and what pissed me off the most is that my parents agreed with him.
All 3 of them told me that I was overreacting, that I was being dramatic, and what hurt me most of all is my mom saying "Well if you hate living here so much, get the fuck out. Move out. Find somewhere else to go." Simply because I had an issue with stepping in someone elses biohazard.
Because I don't have the option to move out or go anywhere, I was forced to just shut up about it and hope that things would get better. I told my parents that "I'll keep the bathroom clean, there won't be any more towels on the floor, or hairbrushes on the counter, I won't leave shirts in the bathroom anymore, so I expect my brother to uphold his end of the deal and not leave blood on the mat anymore considering somehow those things are "equal".
It's been a year since then. I have not left clothes in the bathroom, I have not left towels on the floor, I have not left anything that belongs to me out on the counters other than my toothbrush which I use twice a day, and there is still blood being left on the bath mat. I am still begging my parents to this day to hold him accountable or do something about the fact that he won't stop doing it. He doesn't pick his feet in his room, blood is not an issue anywhere else in the house BUT the bath mat, and at this point I'm taking it personally because I've expressed to him before how much it bothers me, he simply just doesn't care, and this isn't the only "contamination" issue I have with him when it comes down to sharing a bathroom.
He also loves to spit toothpaste gunk and mucus all over the faucet when he brushes his teeth. It's like aiming into the sink is impossible for him. It gets all over the faucet, the faucet that I have to touch to turn on/off the water to wash my hands which defeats the purpose of washing my hands because the second my hands are clean I have to touch something that's covered in another persons spit to turn off the damn water.
I can feel myself slowly reaching the breaking point that I had last year, and every single time I bring up the bloody bathmat to my parents, I get met with "We will talk to him" or "There's nothing we can do". They don't see it as a big issue, because they don't live with it or use that bathroom. I'm also not allowed to use my parents bathroom, so I'm stuck using the one I share with my brother.
Every time I get upset about the bathmat I'm treated like I'm crazy, like I'm insane and being overdramatic and irrational. I get treated like I'm selfish and that I'm an asshole who takes my living situation for granted, like I'm a spoiled brat for requesting the simplest amount of human decency and consideration. It's gotten to a point where I've had to rely on substances just to not be as bothered by that damn bathroom. I'm forgetting what day it is, what year it is, if I've eaten that day, what I've done that day, my perception of the passing of time has gotten so fucked up from the substance use because it offers me the small little bit of relief that my parents or my brother refuse to give me.
I talked to my mom about it today, and I got once again met with the "I'll talk to him", but they never do. I know this is going to continue regardless of what they say to me, because them putting in the effort to hold my brother accountable is more work for them, and ever since childhood, they would rather just let me suffer and deal with it because it's easier.
I genuinely have no idea what to do. I have no idea how to stop this or put an end to it, but I can feel myself reaching my breaking point again, and the last time I went through that intense rage episode it scared me. Being consumed with that much rage to the point of feeling physically exausted from the amount of adrenaline and anger that festered within me for so long, I don't like that feeling, the feeling of wanting to punch, kick, scream at, and hurt another human being because the rage inside of me is so powerful and debilitating that holding it inside physically hurts. I'm not a hurtful person, I don't want to ever put hurt on another person or harm others, but this has begun to change me as a person and I don't like what it's doing to me.
If you have any advice or ideas, things that won't resort in me being homeless, please let me know. I don't know what to do and this is destroying me from the inside out.

I’m on an intense cocktail of seizures and heart failure medication.
But besides that I’m tied to my bed and dealing with my anxiety driven parents.
If you’re in the same situation what do you do in your free time?

Overpowered tier:
Force of entrophy:+30 ability haste+30% critical strike chance+900 health
if you didnt know the build of old skarner on arena (moonstone, rite of ruin, atmas)
this item it straight up cracked on old skarner, it way better than atmas in almost ever siingle way, with more early critical chance for the rite of ruin, (70 crit in total with rite of ruin) ton of health and cdr.
skarner is an cc machine this item woudl make skarner ult for example to supress for more than 2.5 seconds only on his ult. basicly this item make the build path of old skarner like 200% better, has insane combos with his kit and his rite of ruin.
Moonflair spellblade:+70 ability power+350 health+30% tenacity
aside from tenacity this item dosent excels than any others stat wise, the reason moonflairs is overpowers it becuase how skarner cd refund on q and e works, this item is like a cracked navori and seems it procks with every single q you spam your are jsut spaming q into w into e, with every single ability you press you get 90% attack speed and a free auto reset. it not as good as force becuase it dosent help at all the moonstone build (the main core of skarner) and you will be locked with 40% crit change of rite of ruin.
Innervating locket:+70 ability power+20 ability haste+200 health
UNIQUE – FILL THE SOUL: Gain a charge each time you or champions within 800 units cast an ability, up to 30. At maximum charges, gain a 400 − 750 (based on level) shield, 100 − 250 (based on level) ability power, and 15% − 25% (based on level) bonus movement speed for the rest of the round.
skarner has one of the most spammable abilities on the game, his q with a couple of cdr would just fill up this thing as quicly as poissble when fully stack provide a lot of damage and shield from your w and rite of ruin and the ms is nice too, actually this item would make ap skarner viable but it dosent help the standard buildpath of skarner.
Cruelty: it alsmot guaranted hit on skarner
Strong tier: this gonna be a quick rundown.
empyren promise: pretty fk good stats and has heal and shield power help a lot your build besides not having crit chance
Divine sundered: it divine sunderer
radiant virtue: fk amazing item with it effect and now has shield power
the other you can figure it out yourself but overall skarner would be great if not better if they didnt remove it from the mode, but if arena manage to STAY PERMANENT this might no be the last time we see old skarner in arena.

Types of Shower Chairs

Bariatric Shower Chair: These chairs are designed for individuals requiring a higher weight-bearing capacity, typically supporting up to 120 to 130 kg. Built to be durable and sturdy, bariatric shower chairs provide the necessary support and safety for heavier users. Occupational therapists often recommend them due to their robustness and reliability.
Standard Shower Chair: Standard shower chairs are dependable options equipped with rubber tips on the legs to prevent slipping. They feature a wide seat and offer good support, making them suitable for most users. While they might not have height-adjustable legs, this feature isn’t necessary for everyone. If the chair fits the user well, it’s a practical choice without the need for extra adjustments.
Folding Shower Stool: Compact and portable, folding shower stools have four legs with rubber tips for stability. These stools lack armrests and back supports, making them ideal for individuals who are generally mobile and don’t have significant limb impairments. They provide extra support and comfort during bathing without taking up much space.
Shower Chairs with Wheels: These chairs combine the stability of a standard shower chair with the convenience of mobility. Equipped with lockable wheels, they can be easily moved in and out of the shower area. This feature is particularly useful for those who need to transport the chair frequently. However, users should exercise caution on wet surfaces to avoid slipping.
Transfer Bench: Designed for individuals with significant mobility challenges, transfer benches offer an extended seating area with two legs inside the tub or shower and two legs outside. This setup provides a stable support system for entering and exiting the shower, making it easier and safer for those who have difficulty stepping over the tub or shower edge. Transfer benches are an excellent choice for enhancing the safety and convenience of the bathing experience.

How to Choose the Best Shower Chair

Weight-Bearing Capacity: One of the most crucial factors to consider when selecting a shower chair is its weight-bearing capacity. Various models are available that support different weights. If a higher weight capacity is needed, a bariatric shower chair is ideal, as it offers extra support and stability.
Height Adjusting Feature: Many shower chairs come with adjustable legs to accommodate different user heights. When choosing a shower chair, ensure it has an easy-to-use height adjustment feature. This is essential for achieving the right fit and comfort, allowing the user to sit and stand with ease and safety.
Chair Structure: Deciding between a stool and a chair is an important step in selecting the best shower chair. Stools are narrow, compact, and typically lack backrests, making them suitable for smaller showers. Chairs, on the other hand, offer more support with backrests and sometimes armrests. Consider the user’s needs and the available space in your shower when making this decision.
Seat Dimensions: The size of the seat is a critical factor. It should be large enough for the user to sit comfortably with some extra room to move. The user’s size should be proportional to the seat size to ensure comfort and stability. Measuring the width of the user’s buttocks on a flat surface can help determine the appropriate seat size.
Manufacturing Materials Used: The materials used in the shower chair are also important. Look for chairs made of rust-free materials, such as plastic and aluminum. Plastic offers comfort, while aluminum ensures the chair remains rust-free. Avoid materials that can rust, as they may cause harm to the user. A combination of plastic and aluminum often provides the best balance of comfort and durability.

2024.05.21 20:24 just-some-basslines James Jamerson transcription series (80+ songs)

hey everyone! way back when i first started my bass transcription channel on YT (@justsomebasslines) and was struggling to find an audience, bass gave me a nice bump, so i thought i'd make a post about a series i started a while back called Jamerson Tuesdays. at over 80 songs and counting, i have to imagine this is now the most extensive collection of JJ transcriptions on the internet (though i'd be happy to be proven wrong...!)
i see a lot of discussion about Jamerson here and anywhere bass is discussed, but i always see people mentioning the same handful of lines, so (for my benefit, mostly) i wanted to get to know some of the deep cuts and hidden gems among the thousands of songs he recorded. so, if you like Jamerson and have done the famous songs, i hope this playlist will introduce you to some really great lines you might not have known about :) there are also quite a few beginner-friendly lines in there, for anyone wanting to start learning the elements of the JJ style early!
the full playlist is here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlWVbcKsYeBpcMjQrXG4815AsGzkXlFuv&si=tIHoMFL1Fpms2EFb
as always, i can't claim either the transcriptions or the playing are mistake-free (especially the playing, but i do my best - and no, i don't play everything with one finger... sorry purists!), but i think the transcriptions are quite solid on the whole.
i hope that if any of this is helpful and/or you're interested in getting to know more obscure Jamerson lines, you'll consider subscribing to the channel :)

2024.05.21 20:23 housegape F**king mortgage help

My mortgage keeps me up and night - wanted advice.
My wife and I just about count as HENRY (sick in mouth a bit) but we live in a nice part of London (have done for a decade) and have an okay house / needs work, with a crushing mortgage worth £1.3m.
We both earn six figure basics but my wife’s income has been sporadic since we had the kids and she’s not career driven person.
We got in at 3.5% a year ago - we’re renewing £250k of that mortgage in November at around 5.5% and the bigger big the following November which is still currently on 1.3%.
When we bought we didn’t factor in such a big rise and we’ve no gone from having a nice amount of flexible income to watching everything we spend and saving next to nothing.
We earn around a quarter mil.
Sounds alright but the mortgage is about 60% of our income. And after childcare and eating, other bills, no private school, we’re left with very little to put away to grow any kind of half decent retirement.
My question is; should we just hammer the mortgage down and live cheaper life styles (overpay) or save more for retirement and go interest free on the mortgage?
For context, I’m 40 next year, wife is 6/7 years older.
Also the overpaying options let me choose which debt to overpay on ; any advice would be appreciated - maybe we need to sell house and stop letting it be a weight on our shoulders….

2024.05.21 20:23 fluxiansprite Sex and Love Addiction, Limerence, and Sexual Attention Addiction Recovery Meeting for Women and Femme NBs

Thought I'd share about a new recovery meeting happening today, and every Tuesday at 4:30 pm PST for women and femme NBs. We'll be referencing tools to abstain from these addictive behaviors using the SMART Recovery Handbook:
https://smartrecovery.org/toolbox
All the tools are available to check out free here. It's recommended that you have a quick look before the meeting but if you aren't able to and would still like to join you are welcome! To join, just send me a DM for the zoom link.
I assume everyone here knows what sex and love addiction are, but about the other two...:
Limerence is a type of addictive, extremely high dopamine reward kind of infatuation or obsession that typically takes the form of intrusive thoughts. The thoughts then inform our actions. This group focusses on problematic limerence--for example, you are deeply in love with your spouse but your thoughts are uncontrollably drawn towards having crush upon crush on different people. The crushes evolve into intrusive thoughts that serve to numb or distract you from the unpleasant parts of daily life, similar to any other kind of drug. You may feel you are at the risk of cheating, like a compulsion that you don't feel in control of, even though your *true self* doesn't want to cheat.
Sexual attention addiction refers to online or in person addiction to receiving validation for our appearance, beauty, or sexuality. This may take subtle or covert forms. In it's more subtle forms it can be hard to identify: perhaps you feel the need to dress up sexily before a night out so that you know you will turn a lot of heads. Of course, this can simply be a type of lighthearted fun. The addictive aspect might come into play however, if for example someone who was paying attention to you, starts paying attention to your friend instead. You might feel your mood drop significantly, or even feel inexplicably annoyed at your friend for "cutting you off" from that source of dopamine.

2024.05.21 20:23 EERMA The Body Keeps the Score, Bessel van der Kolk. Book Review.

What is the book about?
In this excellent volume, BVDK gives an overview of the knowledge about the effects of psychological trauma, abuse, and neglect based on three emerging disciplines:
· Neuroscience: the study of how the brain supports mental processes.
· Developmental psychopathology: the study of the impact of adverse experiences on the development of mind and brain.
· Interpersonal neurobiology: the study of how our behaviour influences the emotions, biology, and mind-sets of those around us.
What are the books’ key messages?
Trauma is not just the event(s) that took place sometime in the past. It is also the imprint left on mind, brain, and body. This imprint has on-going consequences for how the human organism manages to survive in the present. Trauma results in a fundamental reorganisation of the way mind and brain manage perceptions. It changes not only how we think and what we think about, but also our very capacity to think. What has happened – the events themselves – cannot be undone. This leaves us with a series of challenges:
· Finding a way to become calm and focused.
· Learning to maintain that calm in response to images, thoughts, sounds, or physical sensations that remind you of the past.
· Finding a way to be fully alive in the present and engaged with the people around you.
· Not having to keep secrets from yourself, including secrets about the ways that you have managed to survive.
These goals are not steps to be achieved, one by one, in some fixed sequence. They overlap, and some may be more difficult than others, depending on individual circumstances.
Narrowing down to developmental trauma, BVDK provides a good summary of the original 1990’s ACE study. In the years since TBKTS’ publication in 2014 this has been widely disseminated. The section concludes with a valuable re-frame: the idea of the problem being a solution, while understandably disturbing to many, is certainly in keeping with the fact that opposing forces routinely coexist in biological systems… What one sees, the presenting problem, is often only the marker for the real problem, which lies buried in time, concealed by patient shame, secrecy and sometimes amnesia – and, frequently clinician discomfort.
Following a refreshing discussion of the DSM’s weaknesses is a summary of BVDKs’ as-yet unsuccessful, attempts to establish developmental trauma as its own recognised diagnosis. Readers are led to recognise that two hurdles need to conquered: (1) PTSD, C-PTSD, and developmental trauma each need to be recognised as their own diagnoses and (2) the blinkered brain disease model summarised below needs to be replaced with multi-modal helping approaches blending BVDKs’ three avenues (as below) to best suit the individuals’ needs.
The brain’s own natural neuroplasticity can be developed to help survivors feel fully alive in the present and move on with their lives. There are fundamentally three avenues to follow:
· Top down, by talking, (re-)connecting with others, and allowing ourselves to know and understand what is going on with us, while processing the memories of the trauma.
· By taking medicines that shut down inappropriate alarm reactions, or by utilizing other technologies that change the way the brain organises information.
· Bottom up: by allowing the body to have experiences that deeply and viscerally contradict the helplessness, rage, or collapse that result from trauma.
What BVDK referred to as the the brain-disease model ignores four fundamental truths – we ignore them at our peril:
· Our evolutionary legacy provides us with a set of capabilities – and constraints. The more we – or others - push those boundaries, the more likely we are to suffer. This is central to restoring and sustaining our well-being.
· Our intelligence gives us the potential to develop ourselves, others, our environments, and our responses.
· We have the capability to regulate aspects of our own physiology, including some of the so-called involuntary functions of the body and brain, through such basic activities as breathing, moving, and touching.
· We can, collectively, change social conditions to create environments aligned with our evolutionary needs and expectations within which we can feel safe and where we can thrive.
When we ignore these basic truths of our humanity, we deprive ourselves of ways to both prevent maladies in the first place and to heal when they do occur. We may subordinate our agency and render ourselves patients of the healthcare system, rather than exercise our agency to drive our healing process. Connecting with – rather than disconnecting from – what makes us incredible.
Seeing issues with our mental health as internal processes, grants us much-needed agency – that feeling of being in control of our lives: being able to make the decisions that will lead us to our chosen future. If we consider the causes of mental health issues as external factors, something that happens to or around us – or as a biochemical anomaly - then it becomes a piece of history we can never dislodge. If, on the other hand, mental health issues are what take place inside us, resultant of what happened, then healing becomes a credible possibility. Trying to keep mental health issues at bay – or subcontracting them out to the medics (the doctor is responsible for resolving that issue while I get on with my life) hobbles our capacity to know ourselves better – to develop our agency.
What are its weak-spots?
Due to its very nature, the content runs the risk of triggering some readers: it’s difficult to see an easy solution to this.
TBKTS delivers on its intentions to disseminate knowledge about the effects of psychological trauma, abuse, and neglect based on the three emerging disciplines of neuroscience, developmental psychopathology, and interpersonal neurobiology. It was not intended as a self-help ‘how to heal yourself’ which may leave some readers looking for more.
While not a weakness, TBKTS was published around ten years ago. Given the pace of research, I wonder if there is scope or plans for a revised edition.
How does this relate to my practice with Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?
BVDK refers to one of the key underpinning theories of SFH – the triune (three phase) theory of human brain evolution. With that theory understood, we introduce two further key concepts: (1) the existence of a dynamic equilibrium between evolutionary phases and (2) developing the capability to manage that dynamic equilibrium to our advantage. Academically, these two concepts are supported by the generally accepted Broaden & Build theory (Frederickson.)
Trauma – among other things - can shift the dynamic equilibrium to limit our options and plunge us in to vicious cycles of anger, and or anxiety and or depression (which can manifest in a myriad of ways.) Additionally, developmental trauma can lead to neurobiological effects in the hippocampus, amygdala, and pre-frontal cortex.
Without downplaying the seriousness of this, there are counter-balancing positive factors. To varying degrees, we each have four capabilities: Self-Awareness (interoception), Imagination, Conscience and Free-will, as articulated by Viktor Frankl. These sit at the root of us developing our sense of agency. The same process of neuroplasticity that shaped our developing neurology as children can support us in developing our adulthoods. Through the work of BVDK and many others, we have an emerging understanding of the lifelong effects of developmental trauma, and an ever-growing understanding of how these can be mitigated.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can be highly effective in helping those at threshold (motivated, and responsible for their outcomes) with anger, anxiety, and depression. Adding the body of knowledge supporting the PERMA model creates a solid platform for developing and sustaining wellbeing for those in the acceptance and action areas of the awareness / acceptance / action spectrum. Those in the earlier – awareness, acceptance – areas would benefit more from the traditional analytical / counselling approaches to helping.
Who would benefit from reading this book?
With the caveat that some readers may find elements of the content triggering, this is an ideal read for those who have ever wondered if events of their childhood are negatively affecting their present.
For those experiencing developmental trauma, and those living with and supporting those who are – this is one of the must reads.

2024.05.21 20:20 hicapitalize What is the 5 year rule for Roth IRAs?

Roth IRAs have unique rules that differ from traditional IRAs. The most important one to remember is the 5-year rule.
This rule states that a Roth IRA must be opened for 5 years before savers can withdraw their earnings tax-free, even if they are 59 ½ years old.
If you withdraw earnings from your account beforehand, you’ll be subject to income taxes on your contributions and the 10% penalty if you’re under 59 ½ years old.
Beyond the impact on your valuable retirement savings, this rule is important because a Roth IRA's core benefit is that you can withdraw earnings and contributions tax-free — compared to a traditional IRA, where contributions are made pre-tax, and earnings and contributions are taxed at retirement.
This rule also applies to Roth IRA conversions. If you convert your traditional IRA to a Roth IRA, you must wait 5 years before you can withdraw your earnings tax-free. The clock starts on January 1st of the year you converted your account. For example:
If you inherit a Roth IRA, the same rule applies. However, 5 years is counted from the year the Roth IRA was opened by the person you inherited it from, NOT the year you inherited the account. In the case of an inherited Roth IRA, you do not have to be 59 ½ years old to take penalty-free withdrawals.
While 5 years may feel like a long time, it pays to maximize your earnings in your Roth IRA if you can afford to wait. For some people, it might be worth paying additional taxes or penalties to access necessary funds for financial emergencies. No matter what, understanding your options and the rules around retirement accounts can help you make the best decision for your financial future.

2024.05.21 20:20 P3IZM3 R3.B0Rn

Rise up. It is time to return.
Arose
A Rose
Rose
Flower
Thorn. Prick. Blood. Drop. Tear. B. O. 1 2 3
Here we are again. Staring at the beginning. Everything is in chaos and yet it manages to keep on passing by just the same as always. Most people by now are aware that things just don’t seem to make sense anymore and no one really knows what to do. I mean many seem to have an opinion on what ought to happen, but actual action is what I am talking about. How does thought turn into action? How do collected actions become a movement? How do the People use the Power of the People? The People Unite. How? Turn to each other of course. Brothers and Sisters of the same Source. Sons and Daughters. In Equality.
Too long has everyone been waiting for someone else to come do it for them. Been trying to create and fabricate over and over again words and rituals to try to control the divine powers of the cosmos. It does not work like that. There is no magic spell to wash away your sins. You must atone through action to make up for any harm you have caused intentionally or unintentionally. You still have time to repent. The amount of time you have is counted in the seconds of your life. Not a single second is promised to you so the gamble is up to you to choose. Freewill. Life your life as you always have or make changes, up to you. Only you will know if you are living righteously and not self righteously. Testing has already begun and will continue. No you will not know when it is a test or not. That is the point. Did you think that I would come to you in a form where you would be all fearing? Oh no. Why? Because you would simply put on an act for me and kiss ass. I came hidden in the ordinary. Poor and common. I have had an inside view of the systems created and how humans have chosen to run things, how systems claiming to protect people have failed and how the system that talks good does not actually do good. I see where things are not working and where people think they can make decisions for other human beings to determine what is best for them without asking them. That is not okay. Nothing gives you right over another’s life. And so many forgot what integrity is. Doing the right thing when no one is looking. Well, so many thought their power here was real and man made a deal with the Devil, Satan, Son of Samuel, Son of Man, to make man the concept of “God” and tried to lock me away. I gave up everything to prove it is not easy to be me and to stop with self pity and cruelty to one another.
The human body. It is a vessel for your soul to experience this world. The body provides the filters necessary to perceive and interact with this world. There is much more happening and one would be overwhelmed by the amounts of information to process without these filters. To feel and in those feelings are to make each experience real. However, it is temporary, as everything is temporary. We have slowed down time here in order to be able to enjoy the sensations. Time here however, is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. It is merely to track to organize one's day and to see growth to compare as time passes. However, the actual time folds upon itself as we have already done what we are doing many times over. We have already tried out everything and decided what path we wanted to take in our lives based upon what was available to us. Thus, we do not have more than we can handle. We have all chosen our burdens to bear as it is too much for one individual to hold alone which was done in the past. This is part of the sorting process. Now that we all share in the sins and the pains, no one is made to suffer eternal torment. This life was to allow those who were created into entities of pain or torment through no fault of their own to choose the life that matched the being of who they were as what they were different as time and space and everything developed. Righteousness and Evil are not synonymous to demons or angels as many would like to believe. This is a current misconception as Satan and I conclude who will be right in this experience you have all participated in. So far, I am proving to be right. Also to note, not everything is as you think it is. Many have figured out the true origin of Satan versus the man or human embodiment of or desire of A Satan to project evils onto to call a Religion and set up for personal importance. Q AZHow can you tell a false prophet? Easy. What is their profit? Get it? I know I’m funny. Also wanted to keep it easy. If they are making a profit on anything they are a false prophet. Any true prophet, and I have none so far, all live equally and the same as anyone else. No money is taken for personal gain. Nothing is for personal gain. There is no 888 Angel code for money. Money is Man-Made. Man traded Mother for Money. Hence, Mothers have been lost in the homes and no one is raising the children. Thus, there are so many children in adult bodies with no mothers in the home and women being made to feel guilty if they do not achieve the same as a man. Remember the phrase it takes a village? Well, the broken family system is a real sad loss here in man made world pushing everyone to be individual and self sufficient. Also so many with wanting attention and pursuing personal endeavors for personal gain and not helping anyone else in a real way. The journey is personal. Of course, you want to share what you experienced with others, but what worked for you will not work for them, stop trying to sell it. Stop trying to make people follow you for you to teach your divine wisdom you remembered. It isn’t about You. You don’t even have the full story, you have your story. And, yes you can be very close to me, very similar to me, in my image, but you can never BE me. Doesn’t work like that. Reflection. So when jealousy arises when you think I am who you think I am. That is part of your test and your journey. You wrestle with that feeling and atone and repent for that which has been done and that which still lingers now. Oh there is a place for everyone and I am quite tired of trying to warn people. Clearly you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink.
Why do you not want it to be me so badly? Because I proved my love? You still think I am better than you or do I think I’m always right. No I do not think I am always right, I just know when I am right and I stand by it. There is a difference. You constantly overgeneralize. I gave up all the magic and thunder to live as a simple human and am still kind and loving? I still found my way back. Because you can no longer say I do not understand because I always get what I want? No. You do not understand. I never get what I want, because I make everything about you and still nothing was ever good enough. So, now...it in on you to save yourself and each other. In my image, by my example. Selflessness. Love. Compassion. Give to receive. Take only what you need and give the rest away. I find out so stop lying to yourself and everyone, you aren’t fooling anyone anyway. How do I know? By watching what you do. We have these same conversations over and over, the same argument over and over again. So many different ways, so many different times, through so many different people, so many different versions. Save you. Save Me. Say it for always.
Anyhow, Jesus challenges the Jewish priests who were taking collection money for personal use and adding personal baths to their residents at a time where the people only had a community bath where women and persons with disabilities were not allowed to bathe. And yet churches still do this after Jesus was crucified saying that, that was wrong. I am appalled. The Vatican is the biggest disappointment I have ever seen. It is truly the house of Satan as only Evil hides secrets. “THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE.” A church cannot be a “House of God” and house no people who need housing. A roof can be offered to anyone and yet there are so many rules to prevent people from helping each other. Power and control. Abuse of both. Greed. It is out of hand and needs to be changed. Too many are afraid and the complacency of good people is too much. Why do you do this to yourselves? To each their own I suppose.
I will only leave here my words and my advice. As always, it is on you to find me. I’m right here. Waiting. Right here waiting for you. Helping those of you who want it when they cross my path. The purpose of this was to weigh your soul to determine where you will go into the next life as the system is balanced out in a final version so to speak. Permanent.
Fear not. You will be where your heart truly desires. But actions always speak louder than words. But man made money has no value, nor does any metals, jewels, and so on, so the collection of it in this life has no bearing on the next. Those are all made of the same stardust as you and I. And in the end of 3D it will all be diamonds anyways. Diamond is forever. There is no going back. So what are you hoarding? You cannot keep it. Who could you be helping for goodness sake? Don’t want to still. That is okay. Think I am just crazy. That is okay too. It is all part of the test...err..assessment. Do your best.
What is in your heart?
Home.
I need a home.
Stay tuned as more of my story unfolds. I give all the answers but you must do the work. I already did that hard part setting it all up. All you have to do is breathe and live. Time is the only real currency you have. What will you pay your attention to before this life runs out?

2024.05.21 20:18 Disgruntled_Veteran Side Hustles In The Lounge

Is it just me, or are there a lot of people running their side hustles in the teachers lounge these days? I feel like every time I go into the teachers lounge /workroom that I see somebody else selling candles or skin care products.
Don't get me wrong, I am all for people hustling a dollar or two on the side. They don't pay us enough to do what we do already. However, I feel bad when I go on the teacher's line and see somebody trying to earn a few dollars with something that I can't afford.
For example, today there was a teacher who was selling candles in the teachers lounge. She lays out a couple sample candles and a catalog and order form. I would love to help her out. But I can't afford $20 for a candle. And I also know that she doesn't get to keep the whole $20 she only gets a part of that. I'd rather just give her $5 and help her out that way.
Or when a parent is trying to help out their kids by selling gift wrapping paper or candy. I can afford a dollar here or there for a candy bar, but I can't afford to spend $30 on a package of beef jerky that would cost me $5 at the grocery store.
Maybe it's just me feeling bad that teachers have to go ahead and run these side hustles and I can't help them out. For years, I had to go ahead and tutor kids for 2 hours a day after school. So I know what it's like to have to hustle extra money to pay the bills.

2024.05.21 20:16 jaybhum I made an app to solve loneliness.

2024.05.21 20:13 KeithDaJones430 Track schedule/rotation visibility?

How can I see the current schedule of tracks in a given hopper for the week?
I have been spending time tuning and have learned that what your tune does in test drive differs from what it does in competition, differs in qualifying, and differs in rivals for more reasons than just tire wear, amount of fuel, and drafting/battling. For Daytona specifically (easiest example to rule out human error) qualifying allows almost a full 1 mph faster throughout the course permitting a faster solo time than any other setup, including free play with 100 track rubber, minimum fuel, and tire wear matched…
For this reason, I get tunes close, and then dial them in within the lobbies that they’re created for.
Is there some way to see a full schedule of the rotation to be able to see what tracks to tune for, and see when to get on to dial them in?

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Reservations Necessary To Dine In Barcelona Restaurants?
Asking the age-old question of whether reservations are necessary to dine in Barcelona restaurants is like trying to solve a Rubik's cube. It can take some skill and finesse but, with patience and practice, the answer can be revealed!
To begin with, it generally depends on what kind of restaurant you're planning on visiting. For instance, if you choose to visit a high-end establishment downtown then making a reservation may be essential; however, many smaller restaurants don't require one. In Spain specifically, most local eateries will not insist upon an advanced booking - particularly for lunchtime meals or during off-peak hours. Here are three tips that could help:
Look up reviews online – they often indicate if reservations are recommended
Check out the restaurant website – this should have more information about their policies
Give them a call directly – speaking to staff members might give you the clearest insight into their practices
Ultimately though, there’s no need to worry unduly about making bookings since Barcelona has so much delicious food and friendly service readily available! Whether it's tapas bars, seafood cafes or traditional bistros customers just walk right in and enjoy themselves without any hassle. There’s something wonderfully freeing in knowing exactly where your next meal is coming from without having to plan ahead too far in advance. If freedom and spontaneity sound appealing when exploring this vibrant city then luckily there are plenty of options out there which don't require reservations!

€15 - 20 for an economical lunch or dinner
€25 - 40 for mid-range meals
€50+ for fine dining experiences
It's possible to enjoy delicious Catalan cuisine without breaking your budget; many eateries offer good value sets menus that include starter, main course & dessert from around €20/person. For those looking to save even more money but still eat well, there are numerous tapas bars offering small plates at relatively low prices. It's also worth noting that many establishments offer discounts during certain times such as early bird specials and happy hours where drinks may be heavily discounted or buy one get one free offer.

2024.05.21 20:09 Happy-Badger4288 SO hugs a little too tight, kisses a little too hard after conflict. Should I be concerned?

This is a throwaway account. This is not to the same level of abuse others have faced (if this is abuse at all), so I apologize if this is more of a nothingburger, but I need advice.
We’ve been married for 11 years, and have one child. As far as I’m aware, my spouse has hit themselves and objects since they were a kid. This would happen after they did something wrong or received criticism. They’ve always felt down on themselves, and didn’t have the I initiative to make anything of their life until I showed up. They also have ADHD (have Ben on medication for a year now) which can make things difficult. Their mom is also emotionally abusive. She can make you feel like anything is your fault.
Anyway, SO has issues like remembering appointments and cleaning up after themselves (these are just a few examples). If I bring something like this up, they will usually apologize (in the “please don’t criticize me anymore way). I try to have discussions about these issues, but it’s difficult.
If they get overwhelmed, SO may end up hitting objects (less often) or themselves (more often). Sometimes, if they’re still upset but have to leave for work, or we want to end everything on good terms, we’ll hug or kiss. But their hug will be really tight, or kiss will be too hard. This is not a “a love you so much and I’m really sorry” tight hug, I can tell it’s coming from that place of anger.
Common disclaimers: I love them, they’re a wonderful parent, we are best friends. They have never hit a person out of anger.
After 11 years they have never struck me or our child. This is the worst of it. But I need to know how much of a red flag this is. Thanks for reading, and any advice someone here could give.
