Recap + Notes

• The ACL Sox scored 3 in the first, and 3 in the 2nd, and that would end up being all they needed. They smashed 19 hits and scored 13 runs while giving up 10 hits and allowing 5 runs to score. The pitching for the ACL sox so far outside of Grant Taylor (Sox 2nd round pick from 2023, pick 57) has been pretty poor. Good showings from Wolkow, Burrowes, Gil and Flores as well as Mogollon showing improvement in his last two games.
• The Ballers scored 3 in the bottom of the 3rd, two in the 6th and two in the 8th. The pitching for the Ballers has been what has allowed them to stay around .500 so far.
• A tough loss for the Dash. They were trailing 3-0 after 5 innings, and scored 2 in the bottom of the 5th and two in the bottom of the 6th to take the lead. Pitching woes late as Jose Ramirez walked 5 batters overall, allowed the Tourists to come back and score 2 in the 7th and 1 in the 8th and hold on to win 6-4. Noah Schultz is still on a very hard innings and pitch limit so far after 6 starts.
• The Barons bats are ICE COLD and I mean ICEEE cold. Quero's OPS has dipped from .1000+ to .782. Baldwin is down to .892. Veras is down to .863. The bats were never going to stay this hot for this long but all of them didn't need to shut off at once. The pitching has been mostly good in the series against the Blue Wahoos. The barons opened with a 2-0 victory on Tuesday (Thorpe day baby) but lost 5-1 Weds (Iriarte walked 8 batters), 5-4 in 10 on Thursday (Jake Eder) after blowing the save in the 9th on an errant pick off from Gil Luna, 3-0 yesterday (Mason Adams), and 3-1 today after Ky Bush pitched a gem before Anthony Hoopii-Tuionetoa allowed a hitter with a sub .600 OPS to smash a 3 run homerun off him. The Barons are still 9 games over 500 and in first, holding a 2.5 game lead over the Cubs AA team. Hopefully the bats pick it up again soon, although the Blue Wahoos are a good team (They're first in the other division)
• The Knights finally stop the bleeding. Not too long ago the Knights were 13-14, after having battled back to nearly 500. They started the season 2-7 and things were looking up. Since then, they've reverted back to the Knights of old, giving up late leads in games they are winning and being unable to close it out. The Knights went 1-5 against the Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals) and have gone 2-3 so far against the Stripers (Braves) blowing two games they had leads in.

Given that traditional Cypriot musical culture is so severely neglected, and with the pretext of the Eurovision song contest taking place this week, I decided to share some rather obscure and/or forgotten tunes from our tradition that in my opinion have unfairly faded into obscurity.
1) Kozan march/Πατινάδα Κοζάν

The modern name of this piece mainly comes from the Turkish Cypriot community which has retained it to a degree, and it alludes to its use as a wedding march played when the couple arrives. It has also been used in the same context by Maronite Cypriots in most recent years.
The tune in Cypriot Greek was known as "Πολογιαστός" or "Καλωσοριστός" ("[dance] of the greeting") as it was primarily played when the guests would greet the couple and their close relatives. Greek Cypriots no longer play this tune at their weddings.
The roots of this tune much like many other traditional Cypriot tunes is speculated to originate in Anatolia. The main musical motif closely resembles a Cappadocian Greek spoon dance tune from Farasa. As it was usual during the period, main musical motifs were commonly used across regions for a variety of different tunes, and this makes sense in our case due to the known close links between South-Central Anatolia and Cyprus. For example, the well-known Cypriot song "Η βράκα" is derived from "Konyalı" of the Turcophone Greek population of Central Anatolia (Karamanlides).

This tune translates to "the dance of the struggle/wrestling". "Πάληωμα" in Cypriot Greek refers to what the ancient (and now modern) Greeks would call "πάλη" ("wrestling"), as the tune was likely played while two people would practice wrestling between themselves. It is one of the few surviving fighting/war tunes that survived in Cyprus until the modern age, as the wrestling slowly transitioned into a more light-hearted and performative form.
As Kourostatis (an excellent for traditional and folk music all around the world that I highly recommend) mentions in the description of the linked video, this tune was performed at inns by young men to collect money as they provided a spectacle to the other visitors. Eventually it spread to major feasts and celebrations, until it eventually died out as a practice.

"The dance of the knives", as it is explained in the video, used to be a popular dance in weddings celebrations and other feasts that functioned similarly to the "dance of the struggle". Two dancers would performatively move against each other, with several variations according to the region of the island. In the Kokkinochoria region where the video was filmed, the two dancers would pretend that they had an argument until one of the two would pull a knife and "stab" the other one. Then an elaborate theatrical performance would follow, with the "killer" first feeling remorse, then losing their mind and "skinning" the other dancer. Eventually the "slain" dancer would rise up and the two would embrace and dance.
In other variations, the two dancers would either engage in some sort of combat, performing various moves with their knives, or there would be minor changes to various phases of the performance. This dance also likely derives from similar Anatolian dances with performative dance involving sword combat, but the Cypriot one (and especially the version of the video) deviate significantly, which show some rather unique elements arising from local Cypriot customs and social realities. It was noted, for example, by various British travelers in Cyprus that there would sometimes by drunken quarrels and murders by knife at Cypriot weddings.

Case #2798: The Appalachian Murders
The meeting with Mr. Raines, though frustrating at times, did give me a slight better insight as to what it was I was dealing with. Unfortunately, it’s the farthest thing I wanted my leads to bring me to. I still can not reasonably rule Ms. Blackwell out for the murders in the Appalachian Mountains. I still need to gather more evidence to prove anything that I just found out and stop looking to Ms. Blackwell as my primary suspect.
I assured Ms. Blackwell would have constant surveillance during my time in Asheville to have my interview with Mr. Raines. Upon showing Sheriff Kirkpatrick the letter from my mysterious caller and what I had learned about Cloud Nine not assuring the security of their properties, he agreed to have a deputy monitor everything that happens at the Blackwell estate everyday until I could prove her innocent. After, if I were to prove she hadn’t killed anyone, Sheriff Kirkpatrick would partition to have her placed in witness protection. If the actual killer was out to get her, we’d have to take precautions to prevent another murder from happening concerning this case.
The cigarette carton I brought for Mr. Raines had to be opened and examined before I was to go into the interrogation room to speak to the convict. My gun and pen being taken away from me before I was allowed in the windowless room with nothing but a table to separate me from the killer.
Once Mr. Raines was lead in by guards, chained, he slumped down in the metal chair across from me. The guards quickly hooked his cuffs to the table before leaving us alone. He was middle aged, his once brown hair graying on the sides and gray beard scraggly. He appeared tired. Almost like any kind of fight that was left in his buff body was completely gone as he glared at me from across the table. Before I could get a word out, the older man asked for his cigarettes, to which I handed him the carton. Not even asking if I was fine with him smoking in the same room as me, he asked for a light as he placed one of the cigarettes in between his lips. I used the one match I was allowed to bring in and threw it out in the can behind me. As smoke began to fill the room, I asked if I could record out conversation. Mr. Raines only replied with grunt, to which I just assumed was a ‘yes.’

DET. RYAN SNOW: This is Det. Ryan Snow at the [PRISON NAME REDACTED FOR PRIVACY] in Asheville, North Carolina. I am with Mr. Leighton Raines, conducting an interview to understand what took place in Cabin #2 of the Appalachian Mountains. Mr. Raines, do you know why you were imprisoned?
MR. RAINES [EXHALES SMOKE]: I killed my fiancé.
DET. RYAN SNOW: Can you tell me why?
MR. RAINES: I blacked out. Went mad. Killed her. I’m telling you what I told the court.
DET. RYAN SNOW: Do you believe that’s what happened?
MR. RAINES: What I believe and what really happened are irrelevant. I killed Bonnie. It’s as simple as that.
DET. RYAN SNOW: You wrote in the guest book that Bonnie heard something in the attic and that you ignored her.
[SILENCE]
DET. RYAN SNOW: You stated in it that you told her not to worry, but that the Ouija board hidden up in the attic ended up on the coffee table and you were holding a knife when you-
MR. RAINES: How… How did you know what I wrote in that book…? That the Ouija board was in the attic…?
DET. RYAN SNOW: Mr. Raines, I-
MR. RAINES: I… I had no idea that piece of shit was up there… I didn’t… How’d you’d find out that’s where it came from?
[SILENCE]
DET. RYAN SNOW: Mr. Raines, I’m going to have to ask you to hold off on your questions for a moment and recount every detail you remember when you went to that cabin.
MR. RAINES [SHUFFLING IN CHAIR]: Fucking Christ! [INHALES THEN EXHALES SMOKE] Fine… I… It was supposed to be a romantic getaway… Just me and… Her… To celebrate our upcoming marriage… I proposed to her on those God forsaken mountains… We hiked and I…

DET. RYAN SNOW: By “her” you mean… Bon-
MR. RAINES [SNIFFS]: Don’t. Don’t say her name. You don’t deserve that… [INHALES SMOKE BEFORE EXHALING] … We wanted to get away and just be together… She was getting nervous about the wedding… So, I booked the cabin to get her away from the stress of getting the whole wedding together… Her parents never really cared for our relationship and my best man had gotten the flu, so I knew she wasn’t having the best time getting everyone she wanted together for the wedding… Up there… In that cabin… It was just us… No upcoming wedding… No disappointed parents… No friends who were getting sick or canceling… It was just us… The world… No one else existed except B-… [INHALES SMOKE THEN EXHALES]
DET. RYAN SNOW: The guest book, you said she heard noises. When did she start hearing them?
MR. RAINES [SIGHS]: Yeah… Yeah, we both heard some noises coming from the attic I think… On our… Third day there? I just thought it was an animal and thought the little dumb ass would find its way out, so I told B-her to just ignore it… I couldn’t open that attic anyway… It was locked. I…
[SILENCE]
MR. RAINES: You… You said that the Ouija board was up there…?
DET. RYAN SNOW: You didn’t know?
MR. RAINES: Of course not! Had I been able to get up in that shitty attic and saw that fucking toy up there, I would have gotten Bon- my… Her… Out of there! I don’t believe in that hocus pocus, but she did and I knew she’d be having a panic attack over it. I brought her there to get away from the stress, not make it… Make it… Worse… The… The attic… It was locked…
DET. RYAN SNOW: I’m sorry?
MR. RAINES: The attic was locked… When the police came… I called them and told them everything I knew… They had gone to the attic to see about the noises I told them about when they asked me to explain what happened… It was still locked… The attic… Said it could only be unlocked and locked again by a key… I hadn’t broken the lock… There was no key… How’d I get that Ouija board…?
DET. RYAN SNOW: Mr. Raines, someone else found the Ouija board up in the attic during their stay in the cabin, there could have been two, the one you had may have come from somewhere else and the one the next tenant found was-
MR. RAINES: Wait, what?
DET. RYAN SNOW: What?
MR. RAINES: There’s been people staying in that cabin after me?
[SILENCE]
DET. RYAN SNOW: Yes…?
MR. RAINES: No… No, no… No, no, no! [CHAIR SLIDES AS MR. RAINES STANDS] No one should have gone up there after what happened! That place should be burned down! What happened to me shouldn’t happen to anyone else! It left me to rot in this prison! It wants more! It’ll get more if people go up there!
DET. RYAN SNOW: Mr. Raines, please, calm down! What do you mean? What are you talking about? What is “it?”
MR. RAINES: What am I…? What kind of detective are you? The Ouija board, me waking up to me killing my Bonnie, the noises! None of this shit is clicking with you?
[SILENCE]
MR. RAINES: “It” is a demon! Something from Hell that made me kill my beautiful future wife using that God damned Ouija board!

DET. RYAN SNOW: You’re saying… You were… Possessed…?
MR. RAINES [SLUMPS BACK IN CHAIR AND INTAKES ANOTHER PUFF OF SMOKE]: Knew it wouldn’t hold up in court either, so I confessed to just killing her and… And nothing else happened after… No black outs… My cellmate’s a dick, yet I haven’t killed him… Yet… So, I just assumed the demon went back to the cabin to get its next victim. Never told anyone my theory about it, because I knew they’d think I was crazy…
DET. RYAN SNOW: I thought you didn’t believe in that kind of stuff?
MR. RAINES: I don’t… But that’s all I could understand about how I could have… Killed her… The Ouija board… The knife… My not remembering what happened no matter how hard I try to dig deep enough into my memories to find the answers… I… I don’t remember…
DET. RYAN SNOW: The autopsy… Her heart was missing… You don’t remember taking it…?
[SILENCE]
MR. RAINES [INHALES SMOKE THEN EXHALES]: No… The police couldn’t find it either… Some people… The press and… People who didn’t fully know about me… Theorize that I… That I… [SNIFFING] That I ate her heart… There was blood all over me… Even some around my mouth… So… [SNIFFING]
DET. RYAN SNOW: People think you… Ate her heart?
MR. RAINES: Some kind of… Ritualistic killing from what I remember them saying… That I communicated with that demon and made a deal with it… Her heart being what sealed our… “Contract…” Christ, it sounds so stupid saying it out loud… I just… I don’t remember messing with that Ouija board or… Anything…
DET. RYAN SNOW: Do you remember anything about that day? The moments before you… Before blacking out?
MR. RAINES: We went for a hike to get her away from those sounds in that attic… They were scaring her and I thought a walk would calm her down… She said she’d been hearing things at night… Was having nightmares of someone telling her things… Telling her I’d been cheating on her… I should have just taken her away from that place, taken her home… [SNIFFING] I never should have asked her to marry me… [INHALES SMOKE THEN EXHALES] We got back after she seemed to calm down… I opened the door for her and we walked in… That’s… That’s when things went black… That’s all I can remember before blacking out… Before I… Woke up… [SNIFFING] God… The fear in her eyes… [SNIFFING]
DET. RYAN SNOW: Was there any indication before the trip that she believed you had been cheating on her?
MR. RAINES: No! No, of course not! I would never! I would never cheat on her! She was everything and I could never see any other girl behind her back like that! No, she was just stressed about the wedding and everything going on, so I just chalked it all up to her mind playing tricks on her. I worried she was getting cold feet and… And I just was so afraid of her… Leaving me…
DET. RYAN SNOW: I see. Did you worry for a while, even before the trip, that she would leave you?
MR. RAINES: I… I had my concerns… But then she said ‘yes’ when I asked her to marry me… I thought all those feelings… All those worries, all the back lash from her family… I thought it would all go away… Then I booked… That… Fucking cabin… [INHALES SMOKE BEFORE EXHALING]
DET. RYAN SNOW: Did you book the cabin through Cloud Nine Vacation Rentals?
MR. RAINES: Cloud Nine Vacation…? No, I booked it through some bitch named… Ah… Alba Larson? She said she was the landlord. I booked it through her.
DET. RYAN SNOW: How did you come across her contact information?
MR. RAINES: I was looking up places in the mountains to book a place for us… Posted on Facebook for any recommendations and she reached out to me… She vanished off the fucking Earth, so the police couldn’t find her.
DET. RYAN SNOW: Mr. Raines… Someone did indeed book themselves in that cabin after you. Many did actually, but only one of them booked through Mrs. Larson. Everyone else booked through Cloud Nine Vacation Rentals. That person is under suspicion of murder as well. Now, the thing about Mrs. Larson, is that she’s been dead since 2005 and the property was bought out by Cloud Nine when no one could locate any family of Mrs. Larson.
[SILENCE]
MR. RAINES: Y-You’re… You’re fucking with me…
[SHUFFLING SOUND OF DET. RYAN SNOW TAKING OUT A PHOTO OF MRS. LARSON AND HER DEATH CERTIFICATE, PLACING IT ON THE TABLE]
MR. RAINES: Th-That’s… That’s… That’s her… She’s the one I spoke to about… What the fuck…? What the actual fuck?
DET. RYAN SNOW: Mr. Raines, are you absolutely, one-hundred percent, sure that you killed your fiancé?
MR. RAINES: I don’t know… I don’t know… I… I can’t remember… Someone else is accused of murder…?
DET. RYAN SNOW: Yes. They booked the cabin through Mrs. Larson and went through something similar as you did. They heard sounds in the attic, heard voices, and found a Ouija board in the attic. There were five of them and one was accused of murdering the other four. However, her story matches yours in a way and I believe there may be someone either impersonating Mrs. Larson or just some sick killer luring people to that cabin to kill them. Why they’re leaving you and this other person is what I’m also trying to figure out. I can’t rule out anything. I can’t say for certain that you’re both innocent. They could have looked up your story, did some digging, and repeated everything that happened to get away with it. I’m still trying figure out if you both did indeed speak to a Mrs. Larson, or if you just made all that up.
MR. RAINES: Well I spoke to someone! That’s for damn sure, but how the hell could they have been dead for five years?
DET. RYAN SNOW: Exactly. You’re saying you were possessed. This person also believes they were framed by something that didn’t show itself until they got the Ouija board. I don’t believe for one second it was something supernatural, but it definitely has something to do with the occult. You said your wife believed in that stuff, yes?
MR. RAINES: Y-Yeah…
DET. RYAN SNOW: I see.
MR. RAINES: So, now what?
DET. RYAN SNOW: If you have nothing else to offer, I’ll need to take my leave and continue my investigation on this current suspect. If I can prove that they’re innocent and see if I can find out who the real killer is, I will have the court petition to release you and clear you of the murder.
MR. RAINES: And if you can’t?
DET. RYAN SNOW: Then you and my current suspect are going to be imprisoned for a very long time and those cabins will remain.
[CHAIR CLATTERING]
MR. RAINES: No! No, you can’t let that place remain open to the public! If what you say is true, then that place needs to be burned down! Whether or not a demon is to blame for my Bonnie dying, there’s seriously something wrong with that place!
DET. RYAN SNOW: Mr. Raines, there’s nothing I can do about the cabins after I prove or disprove you and this person. What happens to them is up to nature at this point as I also plan on taking down Cloud Nine. They failed you and this person, despite the kind of people you could turn out to be. I’m afraid that’s all I can give you and all you can give me… [CHAIR SLIDES AS DET. RYAN SNOW STANDS]
MR. RAINES: Wait! Wait!
DET. RYAN SNOW: Yes?
MR. RAINES: I… I remember… One last thing… I remember… Something after I woke up from my black out…
DET. RYAN SNOW: And that is?
MR. RAINES: Howling…
DET. RYAN SNOW: Howling?
MR. RAINES: Yes, howling.
DET. RYAN SNOW: It’s the mountains.
MR. RAINES: I just- you- mother fuck- [DEEP BREATH] I understand that and I thought the same thing, but there was something… Off about it… It wasn’t until I got off the phone with the police that I heard it… That howling… I thought it was a mountain lion at first or maybe a group of coyote… But… It sounded… Almost human… An animal… I can’t describe it, but… It still haunts me…

As I stated before, my conversation with Mr. Raines did give me more of an insight to what I was dealing with in the Blackwell case, but it was leading me down a hole I did not want to fall into. Unfortunately, anything else I tried putting together to make this puzzle were not fitting. Both Ms. Blackwell and Mr. Raines stated that they had spoken or at least exchanged communication with Mrs. Larson to book the cabin. They both, or at least Ms. Collins when she visited with Mr. Raines, heard sounds and voices coming from a locked attic. And they both had experiences with the Ouija board. Mr. Raines having no idea how he had gotten it from the attic which was still locked when he woke up from his black out.
There was just one last piece. The howling that Mr. Raines heard after his supposed murder of Ms. Collins. Ms. Blackwell had never mentioned to me about any howling during her time in those mountains. I’m going to conduct one last interview with Ms. Blackwell. Just got back from 10 days in Vietnam (6 in Hanoi and 4 in Hoi-An) and wanted to answer my own questions from my April 13 post in the hopes of being able to help other travelers like us 🙂
Original question:
Hello. We are flying to Hanoi on April 22, but will go to Hoi An to meet up with friends on April 24-27. After that, we will be back in Hanoi from April 27-May 2.
Asking for tips for the following:

1. Is it better to book a sleeper BUS or sleeper TRAIN the evening of April 23 to go from Hanoi to Hoi An? We know flying is more convenient and saves us time but we are really interested in taking the bus or train 🙂

-We went with a sleeper train and it was bearable for us. Not the best experience (people having video calls on their phones in speaker mode, people putting their feet up on other people’s seats, people smoking in undesignated areas) but we came well-prepared with snacks, water, sanitizing wipes, pillows, ear plugs, eye masks, blankets (the train lends you one but we brought our own), pre-downloaded shows and movies. Wifi also never got bad except when we would go under tunnels for a few seconds. The mountainside views were beautiful. If you have the luxury of time, taking the train would be okay 🙂

1. We have 5 days in Hanoi. Should we consider visiting Sapa? If yes, what is the best way to travel there?

The smaller the tables and chairs, the better. 🙂 We came prepared with medicine and rehydration salts in case we get upset stomachs but we never had a problem with any of the food we ate 🙂

**We got a Viettel e-sim at the airport and got the 1 month package for around 350k dong. Guy at the counter set it up for us. That way we always had data. Worked well for us and never encountered any problems with it either.

We’re holding a small (less than 50 guests) family wedding at our home that sits on two acres. The date is June 1st. We have everything else situated except how to entertain the kids so the adults can have a good time. When I say “a ton of kids” I mean adults are outnumbered nearly 2 to 1. And they range in age from 20 months to middle school age. We have a badminton set with light up shuttlecocks that we’ll put up. Ceremony is at 6:30 in the evening. We will have a dance floor which I assume some kids will love. We’re trying to find ideas that are safe so (hopefully) no one needs to make an early exit to the ER. A toddler specific activity would be nice as there are several little ones. Located in KY, So weather will be nice unless it rains, but we have contingency plans for that scenario. TIA!

Log book of Det. Ryan Snow Case #2798: the Appalachian Murders Description of enclosed evidence: One bloody, torn up, blue and green guest book retrieved from suspect.
I have read through the guest book entries during the time Kate Blackwell (only survivor and possible suspect of the Appalachian Murders during the week of 09/20/2017-09/26/2017) and her friends were staying in one of the three cabins owned by Cloud Nine Vacation Rentals in the Appalachian Mountains. It appears the group wrote in it each day leading up to the murders, recording everything happening within the cabin.
The first entry was written by Blackwell, stating that the cabin was beautiful and that she was looking forward to the rest of the week. The next entry was written by Paul Woolfe asking about the attic, stating that the group was hearing sounds, but the door was locked. They pass it off as an animal having getting itself stuck up there, but that the girls would be asking the land lord, a Mrs. Alba Larson, for a key to get it out. Note: Mrs. Larson had indeed owned the three cabins in those mountains, but had passed away in 2005 and the property was bought by Cloud Nine Vacation Rentals not long after when no next of kin was found.
The entries that followed are when my concerns for the well being of not just Ms. Blackwell, but the rest of the group as well began. It was written on the same day as when Ms. Blackwell and Sonja Greymoore said they'd be going to speak to Mrs. Larson about the attic. I will be attaching the more concerning entries to this log, only giving my commentary during points of no consequence to the murders. I will also be attaching the earlier entries from before Blackwell's arrival to see if I can find any similarities between each guests' stay. As far as I know, there have been several missing persons cases concerning that area, however, it is common for people to go missing in the Appalachian Mountains on a daily basis, most of which go cold. One of the only known murders to occur in either of the three cabins happened in 2010. The suspect, a Mr. Leighton Raines, pleaded guilty to the death of his fiancé, Mrs. Bonnie "Bunny" Collins and was given life in prison with no chance of parole. Mrs. Collins was found with her torso cut open and her heart missing. Mr. Raines was in the corner of the room they were found in covered in Mrs. Collins' blood. The couple wrote in the guest book as well. All others before and after were never found or heard from again, but again, those cases went cold and it was speculated that their fates were left to the mountains.
However, I'd be lying if I said most of these entries were not the least bit concerning.

Entry #3 09/21/2017- This was recorded the second day of the groups' time in the cabin. The group was hearing sounds in the attic that was locked, group believed it was an animal, so Ms. Blackwell and Ms. Greymoore went to ask the land lord for a way to the attic. This entry is believed to have been written by Ms. Greymoore.
The land lady wasn't in her house. We tried to look in through the window to see if she was in there, but the place looked empty. Kate tried to call her, but she's not answering. We're going to try finding out who this lady is and really give her a piece of our mind! The boys are saying that they're going to try breaking in to the attic and get whatever is up there out. Kate and Jasper are worried about getting in trouble, but I'm not going to sleep with all that noise over my head!
Entry #4 09/21/2017- After some analysis of the handwriting, it's believed this was written by Jasper Steele.
We apologize for the attic door. We were able to get it open and we thankfully didn't find an animal, but that noise is still concerning us. It stopped and we didn't find anything up there, but we're a little freaked out. Is this some kind of prank?

There's was a fucking Ouija Board up in the attic! Hell to the fuck no! First the noises the origins of which we no not, now there's a Oujia Board! Where's that land lady?
Note: During my first successful interrogation of Ms. Blackwell, she told me about the night they played with the Ouija board and that they stopped playing when it answered a question she asked correctly. Ms. Blackwell was not directly playing the game and she asked a question about what she was thinking about in that moment they were playing. It was after this night she states things got worse. Based on the entries here on, I believe her friends would share this sentiment.
Entry #6 09/22/2017- Handwriting analysis points to this entry was written by Paul Woolfe.
We still can't reach the land lord. She's still no where to be found at her house. We tried patching the attic door up as best we could, but the lock is still broken. We put the Ouija board away because it was scaring Kate, but we didn't put it back in the attic. Luke wants to play it again when things settle back down, but there's still noises coming from in the house. We're looking around for what's making these sounds, but we can't find where they'd be coming from. I'm just gonna say this place is way old and not caught up on any safety regulations.
Note: To save time, the next entries to follow for the next two days are about the group complaining about the faulty wiring and possible tilt of the cabin due to lights turning on and off depending on how they were left before a person left a room or an item being placed somewhere they didn't leave it. Ms. Blackwell told me of all this as well. The entry I'm attaching after this is presumably when Ms. Blackwell told me about Ms. Greymoore wanting to leave because of her boyfriend, Luke Billings, being caught cheating on her with multiple girls. I will be doing a search on each of these girls during the time of this investigation to see what they knew of Luke and his relationship to each of these victims and Ms. Blackwell.

She was out there. The land lord. She was outside, just standing there like she was waiting for Sonja and I to get to my car. Paul and Luke went to talk to her, but she ended up stabbing Paul. Luke says she slashed our tires. She's still just standing there. We can't call anyone because there's no service now. We stopped Paul's bleeding as best we could and are trying to get him to rest. We're going to take shifts watching the land lord. If she tries anything, we agreed to wake the rest up and try ambushing her. I'm so sorry... I just wanted to go on vacation with my friends one more time...

The land lord slashed all of our tires, even the spares. We're going to the trails to get to high ground to try get cell service. If we don't get back home when we told our families we would, we're either lost somewhere on the Appalachian Mountains or that land lord did something to us. Please let us find a way out of this.
Note: There is one more entry written in the guest book. However, it appears to have been written by Ms. Blackwell after the murders took place. She told me that it was when the group returned to the cabin and found the Ouija board on the coffee table that that's when things got blurry for her. I will try to get her to give me a more detailed explanation of that night. If I can get her lawyer, Mrs. Mayfield, away from her long enough that is.
Mr. Steele had been found in the attic, the door shut and locked. It looked like he'd been attacked by some kind of animal; torn and his limbs scattered about the attic. Mr. Billings was found in the living room next to the coffee table where the Ouija board was with a head wound. Hikers found Mr. Woolfe dead from possible blood loss and his body picked off by wild life, his mother identified him by the tattoo of a sword on his arm. And Ms. Greymoore was found in a shallow grave with a piece of paper in her hands near a cave, the grave marked by a stone with a bloody hand print which was found to be Ms. Blackwell's. The back of Ms. Greymoore's head was found caved in and her spine broken. It's assumed she fell and died shortly after. It's believed Ms. Blackwell buried her with the note before making her to the road where she was found. The paper she used came from the guest book.
The note read: Sonja Greymoore, 18. My family lives in Fayetteville, North Carolina. My dad is Owen Greymoore, he works at Kelly's Tires and Tune Ups. There's four others. One is somewhere out here in the woods, two are in Cabin #2 on 3000 Fairy Wood Lane, and the last one is either wandering somewhere around these mountains, dead, or was found by police. Please get us home.
Ms. Blackwell had been picked up by the teens the day before her friends were found. There were no other people, living or dead, found in those mountains. This thing Ms. Blackwell says is to blame for her friends' death is still unknown. I will need to do even more digging as it seems, based on the other entries before this case, there is a pattern to these cabins. I will contact Cloud Nine Rentals once I understand more of these cabins' histories.

Luke and Jasper are in Cabin #2 on 3000 Fairy Wood Lane. I'm not entirely sure who killed them all, but I was the one who brought them here... It was all my fault... I should have just let them go... Being alone would have been worth it if it meant they'd still be around... I should have trusted we'd stay in touch... It's all my fault... I'm sorry... I'm so, so sorry... Log book of Det. Ryan Snow Case #2798: the Appalachian Murders Description of enclosed evidence: One bloody, torn up, blue and green guest book retrieved from suspect.
I don't know what the hell just happened. I had received a call from an unknown number on my work land line. The reception was awful, but I could make out that it was male, possibly of an older age. He sounded upset, asking for a female and begging I "bring her back." The way he spoke didn't sound demanding. He sounded upset. Like a child who had their toy taken away and they were pleading to get it back. I assumed he was talking about Ms. Blackwell, but I never got any real helpful information from him.
Front desk had received the call first, the operator saying he sounded normal when she picked up. He had asked to speak to me, but refused to give a name, telling the operator the call was classified and that it was information meant only for me. He wasn't on the line long enough for the station to track where he was calling from.
However, all of that wasn't what was bothering me about this whole interaction. He had called me "Lucky Dime." Only one person ever called me that and there's no way anyone would know that except my parents and I rarely speak to them. Whoever this was, knew more than even my closest friends and I don't have any of those.
To hell with Mrs. Mayfield, I need to speak to Ms. Blackwell. Now.

Wondering if anyone works out of state as PRN? (Or has positive or negative opinions on it). I’ve toyed with the idea before since the PRN requirements are so minimal. I’ve always liked the idea of being staff or contracted somewhere & flying out to CA to do PRN. I say CA bc I used to live there & still have family there, but I’m a Disney/Universal person so I’m also not opposed to FL. Then again I have family in TX so also not opposed to going there too lol.
Whether it’s 2 shifts in 1 week every week, or fulfilling all the days together within 7 days, does anyone or has anyone done this? (One plan would be to work sun/mon/tues at the set job & thurs/fri/sat the following week). Then fill in the PRN in between Wed-Wed. Or fly back once a week if it’s a place that’s a $40 flight. (KY to Chicago for example or to Orlando is $20 sometimes).
For reference in crazy, I used to drive 12-14 hours to Orlando after taking every physics test in the Midwest lol. I was already working full time as a nurse while going to what I thought was going to be pre med classes (did not continue bc I kept going out of town lol). I fly fairly frequently as it is bc my immediate family is in one state, my extended family in another, & me in a whole different state from those 2 altogether. In 2021 I think it was I was full time at my hospital & when 4 week contracts were still around, I was driving 2 hours away for my travel contract in another state. I was 4 nights a week there & 3 nights as my set hospital. Sometimes they were block sometimes it was a different state everyday. I did that for 13 or 14 weeks in total.
Though nothing is really going to steer me away from the plan of this, I would still love to hear the pros & cons/negatives from anyone who has an opinion on the concept general. So I’m open to any kinds of options whether they support this or think it’s dumb. I’m the queen of dumb decisions so I’ll accept it all lol. & Of course I’d love to hear if anyone has any experience doing this themselves too!
