2024.05.22 00:58 dscarbon333 Why don't more people seemingly know about the "alternative treatments" for various conditions per se, and the perspectives, there associated, vis. items like depression etc.?

Given that information in other posts about available information(if looking for it perhaps, per se), regarding "alternative treatments" for the situation that may be associated with the idea of "depression" and or the other nutritional augmentation/modification related items are somewhat "lesser known" than more "conventional approaches"/"main stream approaches", why are the "main stream approaches" the "main stream approaches" as per majority of physicians etc., general public etc.?
One might argue that these specific referenced items of information in question being "less well known" than more "well trumpeted" items like pharmaceutical medications, etc., amounts to somewhat of a "betrayal" arguably; and hence one might be lead to ask one's self "who is involved" in the betrayal arguably? "What are the mechanisms" via which this "betrayal" is proliferated throughout society, in general?
Well, presumably, this betrayal would involve several key actors.
-Sources of Information,
and
-Framers of Information.
A "source" of said information could essentially be argued to entail/involve organizations like the main-stream-media and/or a run-of-the-mill mainstream medical providers arguably.
Hence one might wonder perhaps, where the source of said issue vis. there associated potential entities/individuals/there associated organizations may lie, perhaps.
To suss this out, one may be "well guided" to potentially asses the sources of revenue etc., for said organizations etc., as appropriate etc.; "Follow the Money", "Qui Bono" etc.(not necessarily always true but at times may be useful "guides" perhaps)
To work from the "ground up" one may hence be "well guided" to asses, for example, the revenue sources of Main Stream Media first, as this is most ubiquitous source for "medical advice" in general perhaps;
-Pharmaceutical companies within group of largest 5 ad spenders vis. main stream media;
https://www.fiercepharma.com/marketing/hey-big-spenders-pharma-ranks-top-five-industries-for-tv-media-spending-says-report
https://www.foxbusiness.com/money/which-pharma-brand-spends-the-most-on-tv
https://www.statista.com/statistics/953104/pharma-industry-tv-ad-spend-us/
-As is somewhat obvious media companies are in general, in some regard, directly or indirectly often effectively "advertising companies", in effect;
https://www.pewresearch.org/journalism/2014/03/26/revenue-sources-a-heavy-dependence-on-advertising/
Further, one can not truly reasonably expect to rely on main stream media coverage alone for decent medically oriented advice unfortunately perhaps in general.
None the less, fortuitously there are run of the mill health care providers. Hopefully they wouldn't have any conflicts of interest with financial behemoths like large pharmaceutical companies right?
Well, unfortunately pharmaceutical company money is very present in both the education of the average western-medicine oriented doctor, as well as in the environment which they may operate in, in a post college etc., "setting" if one will, etc.
For example;
Pharmaceutical companies "presence" in Canadian medical schooling;
https://www.sootoday.com/around-ontario/canada-how-big-pharma-can-impact-the-education-of-med-school-students-1634906
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3778453/
In US, etc., as well;
https://time.com/6171999/big-pharma-clinical-data-doctors/
https://www.propublica.org/article/we-found-over-700-doctors-who-were-paid-more-than-a-million-dollars-by-drug-and-medical-device-companies
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19723256/
Well, if pharmaceutical company money is creating "conflicts of interest" within medical schools, and among run of the mill doctors, well, certainly, regulators would call them out if they did anything "inappropriate" right?
Unfortunately, there may also be potential "conflicts of interest" present within regulators potentially as well for example, via the "revolving door", and other there associated phenomena, as well as through funding and other more direct financial conflicts of interest as well; as may be documented via the following perhaps;
https://www.science.org/content/article/hidden-conflicts-pharma-payments-fda-advisers-after-drug-approvals-spark-ethical
https://www.science.org/content/article/fda-and-nih-let-clinical-trial-sponsors-keep-results-secret-and-break-law
https://www.hawaiipublicradio.org/npr-news/npr-news/2016-09-28/a-look-at-how-the-revolving-door-spins-from-fda-to-industry
https://web.archive.org/web/20240415060010/https://www.science.org/content/article/fda-s-revolving-door-companies-often-hire-agency-staffers-who-managed-their-successful
https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/how-corporate-funding-distorts-nih-research/2018/06/22/ad0260c8-7595-11e8-9780-b1dd6a09b549_story.html
Also, within there-associated research institutes/clinics/labs etc., the desire to secure sources-of-funding may also acutely draw in the influence of pharmaceutical companies into the "scientific research" process associated with the field of "medicine" if one will in general for example;
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9302569/
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19858802/
https://www.propublica.org/article/federally-funded-health-researchers-disclose-at-least-188-million-in-conflicts-of-interest-can-you-trust-their-findings
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIsMldhzxns
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1y_EkKhs5BQ
Further, within research institutions and research at Universities etc., people would only, even if unduly influenced by pharmaceutical industry or other industry finances etc., directly or indirectly, none the less behave ethically, and in an up-standing and competent way in regards to conducting their research right? They certainly wouldn't produce dubious "scientific" or otherwise "academic" oriented research perhaps right? Surely, they would be concerned with being called out, and the there-associated consequence for doing as such etc. perhaps?
Well, it turns out that quite a lot of modern "scientific research", even if "fancy" and "rigorous" in its supposed "methodologies" "verbiage" etc., is actually of "dubious" origin, and representative of something less than "integrity" and "excellence" potentially, lets just say seemingly;
A large amount of "scientific research papers" submitted to "Academic Journals", are later retracted, etc.;
https://www.theguardian.com/science/2024/feb/03/the-situation-has-become-appalling-fake-scientific-papers-push-research-credibility-to-crisis-point?ref=labnotes.org
Many, if not most of the scientific, etc., papers that clear the review process and are published, are later found to be un-reproducible, vis. results etc., outcomes etc., for "whatever reason", seemingly;
https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-39054778
https://www.sciencenews.org/article/cancer-biology-studies-research-replication-reproducibility
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replication_crisis
Hence, from the education, to the research, to the regulation of the "medical industry" in the US, etc., one may find, arguably, objectively speaking, a relatively profoundly large presence of "pharmaceutical industry" financial influence involved in practically every stage of the; research, review of the research(if the "research" is even somewhat "legit" to begin with), govt. institution associated actions(for example; "Approval", etc.) associated with said associated "research", and one can even see said same organizations(Ph. Companies) similarly being the leading contributors to the main-stream-media associated "coverage"/"discussions" of said associated items, both directly, via advertising, and indirectly vis. implicit bias of said profit driven or funding driven main-stream media outlets etc.
Hence, arguably, the "influence"-of pharmaceutical companies' "motivations" may have a disproportionate and relatively overwhelming per se, influence upon the "medical" information that is presented-to, and made-easily available to the average member of the public in the "Western World" in general perhaps.
As an aside obviously, if one will, there are many other books, articles, research papers etc., which may somehow none the less, "make it through" this net of biases and still somehow report on it, if one will; on this, there associated variety of topics in question, which one may further perhaps research and analyze as to one's own preferences perhaps.

2024.05.22 00:56 PizzaGolfTony Considering a new teaching Position in New Taipei.

 Hello everyone. Here is yet another post about someone considering a move to Taiwan. Please move along if tired, or be kind if you decide to stay. I am a 40 year old single male. I would be working at an international school with a 120k/month salary( housing allowance and all). Would be teaching PE to elementary students. Around 28 classes per week(seems like a lot). I am lucky and have multiple other options, but I love Taiwan and am considering this position. I guess I am just looking for thoughts or considerations from an outsiders perspective. I would love to settle down in Taiwan and start taking language classes and all that. I have spent a lot of time there before. Thanks for anything and everything. ✌️❤️

2024.05.22 00:49 MuroTheSimp So... one small thing about Story Mode seems pretty clear now. (Minor VR Beta Story Mode Stuff)

Victory Road is the first IE game with a proper side quest system to it like in many RPG games. Which I feel seems to be the most likely answer as to how one aspect they talked about before will work: The recruitment of players to fill out the rest of Nagumohara's team.
We know that the Story players we see now (Sakurazaki, Shisendou, Kisoji, Shinohara, Kameo and Yagyu) will apparently be the only real scripted story recruits. And that to fill out the rest of the team there will be a specific pool of players to choose from to fill out the rest of the team.
How exactly we choose or recruit those players was a topic of minor discussion. But with this simple addition it feels likely that it will be done through side quests.
It is easy to imagine. A point where the objective description on menus becomes something like "find students to join the football club" and all of the sudden a bunch of side quest markers pop up all over the map at Nagumohara, and it staying that way until you manage to get a full team of eleven players completed.

2024.05.22 00:45 Master-of-legend CS101 students, do you think the labs are effective at teaching you coding?

To any students taking CS101 this semester, I want to ask, do you think the labs are effective at teaching you programming? Are the tutors and teachers in the labs helpful enough for you to do well in programming? If not then how did you guys start from no experience in programming to being very good at it? Like did you watch online videos or do practice exercises on a coding website to improve? I really wanted to know your answers because I tend to struggle with Compsci101 and I think I might fail the course this semester, which I think I would need to retake it next semester before doing Compsci 130. So it would be helpful to give me some answers if you think the labs are effective at teaching and if not then how did you guys get better at coding?

2024.05.22 00:41 42gxd Analysis Paralysis on transferring for CM degree

Hello, so I know there are a lot of these questions posited, and I've spent a lot of time lurking the sub and have gotten a lot of insight on the field and college-related topics.
My question is this - does the school I go to really matter? I know the general answer is no, field experience will time and time again be the indicator of what makes a good CM/PM.
I'm stuck between several schools, markedly Texas A&M and UT Arlington. I want to work in the industry for a while and then start something overseas where there is a wealth of opportunities for myself and a means to create them for others.
I know I'm definitely in my head about this and there are so many parameters missing for you all to base answers on, but my question is really about whether the prestige and network of A&M is worth moving and likely incurring student debt for a shot at "bigger" outfits. Thanks.
TL:DR Wondering whether to apply to TAMU for its network/prestige or UT Arlington for a more streamlined transfer and less headache while sacrificing the "college experience"

2024.05.22 00:41 keatonsteuben C722 - the feedback I submitted to the school

The OA was frustratingly subjective. The questions and answers on the exam were posited differently than the quiz/test material I studied in the textbook. The PA and OA did not align. Some of the content on the Objective Assessment was not tested for throughout the textbook. For example, the network diagram charts and WBS charts were not tested for in the course content. There were questions about both of those topics in the text, but no questions represented the chart analysis that is expected of students on the exam.
Please consider restructuring the course material to match the exam, providing students a reliable study experience.

2024.05.22 00:29 the-cactus-person When should I start worrying?

Looked into stpd multiple times, and i think I experience some symptoms. I do have strange beliefs. I've been learning about quantum mechanics and the quantum multiverse, these topics really interest me. And I feel like I can see different realities sometimes. Whenever something scary happens, I can see all the other worlds in which I died from that event. Also I cant always tell dreams from reality, once had to think about a dream for a whole day to figure out that it was definitely a dream. I experience paranoia and magical thinking. I connect unrelated events all the time. I feel like I can know that something will happen a split second before it does. People have told we that the way I speak is strange. I can't seem to put emphasis on the correct part of sentences. I'm also very bad at picking words, but that might be because I know multiple languages. I talk to people often, I have friends, but I do have pretty bad social anxiety, I panick whenever someone calls me, even when it's people I'm comfortable around. Istg I keep forgetting where left and right is, this is something that has only been happening recently. The way I see things is weird too. Objects get stretched out or squished sometimes. I laugh when im not supposed to, even when nothing is funny. This is all I could think of of the top of my head. Are any of these concerning? Could it be stpd?

2024.05.22 00:27 ye_lewd right person, wrong time

** this is a long rant
We broke up yesterday — after 16 months together and what was both our first relationship (both around 18-19 y/o). I met him online, me in nyc and him in LA. We both got into the same college and our first interaction was nothing but sparks. There was no consideration for looks, background, and what nots. To me, that was the purest form of connection and intent of interest. Fom my daylight to midnights, our hours were full of conversations, flirts, and little did I know, the beginning of love.
After three months of talking, he traveled across the country to meet me and those memories felt like scenes out of a Hollywood movie. Those memories I kept on as we did LDR for the next 5 months until college started. While it was hard, I learned with the time difference and schedule differences, it’s not the quantity of time you spend with each other but if the person on the other end is worth waiting for. I waited.
When college rolled around, he filled his schedule once again with student govt campaigns, clubs, and networking events (we go to a highly competitive school). I waited. I gave him my all (my firsts of everything) and we went on dates here and there but it felt nothing of what he promised: the quinesstenial college romance of holding hands down campus, studying in the library, watching the first autumn leaves fall. I asked why we can’t do all of this and he told me he’s busy and that there’s that insecurity in him to show personal life in public. I empathsized as his touch and his care behind the door meant more that what was displayed. So I became accustomed to waiting.
During winter, I reflected on our relationship: the imbalances of love. I asked am I receving as much as I’m giving? My love langauge is acts of service and physical touch. His, as I came to conclude, is quite rare. Because of his ambition, time is his most valuable asset — no matter how busy he is, he always makes time to spend time with me. I know that he loves me because he’s a person who puts up a strong front, a big smile, and what seems to be never-ending energy, but when he’s with me, he’s able to let it go. Like a bird who everyone sees soaring but only I can see when he’s down, with his wing tucked, and defenseless. I came to treasure this trust between us and proud of how deeply connected we became from just talking through a screen to be spending arm and limb next to each other.
-Yet, I couldn’t heal him. No matter how hard I’ve tried, he feels as if he lost himself in with the amount of things he’s trying to accomplish in college and as he tries to find his passion to pursue. Because we only spend nights together in the comfort of my room when both of us are tired from the day’s schedules, that old spark of never-ending conversations of random topics disappeared. For him, he enjoys my company but sometimes he feels as if this relationship felt like an obligation. Because I spent so much time invested to him, I also lost sight of who I was coming into college, full of aspirations to do and explore.
We talked about this issue, and I told him, yes we need to redirect our focus but it doesn’t have to mean the chopping board. As students, the most and least I can give is my time for when he needs support and comfort. I want to be with him along this journey and come out into real adulthood with memories and success to share. But as the stubborn soul he is, he reaffirms that he doesn’t want us to cling on and salvage the bare minimum. he told me, “if I have a chance at loving you again after college, I will fall even harder.”
This love was becoming cancerous. From one day to the next, our love catching closer to the end depsite our souls becoming more saturated with depth. Why can’t love be everlasting like the fairytales promised.
I miss him so much and I don’t know how I should treat him. should i wait for him until we’re ready? what are the boundaries of us? we both agreed to continue to talk because we care and support each other but will he still be soft and gentle to me because he loves me but we’re not in a relationship? will he wait for us?

2024.05.22 00:23 East_Statement_3173 The state of the community is because there is nothing left to talk about. Story moves at a dogshit pace.

Literally fuck all happens. We get 1 panel worth talking about for a day max then we are back to nothing happening.
Literally fuck all revelations. When we get one it is vague and oda switches to a new topic immediately like he has ADHD. Can’t even stay focused for 3 panels before he switches.
Literally fuck all character development.
Recycling tropes and gags. Offscreening events and sucking nika dick all day.
That’s why people only talk about powerscaling and agenda.
Because there’s no payoff to mysteries we already burnt through every topic there is 10 years ago. The only new things added to the lore is nika bs and a few sentences from vegapunk.
Then the pacing went to shit that we ran out of things to talk about
The chapters are literally reaction faces. Plot barely moves or focus on nika wank that no one gives a shit about.
I am saying there is nothing left to talk about that’s why all we see is agenda and powerscale. Nobody not even fanboys or the anti-agenda posters give a shit about what is happening.
The people making posts complaining about the state of this sub don’t even know what to talk about either. They don’t make posts to discuss the story cause they think the pacing is dogshit too. They never make posts but always complain piratefolk sucks.
If you hate the state of this sub then make a post to give us something to talk about instead of complain. But you can’t do that either cause Oda refuses to tell the story. He refuses to develop anyone or anything.
The state of the community is because of Oda not telling his story. There is no story to talk about and hasn’t been one for years.
Strawhats did fuck all and we can’t even discuss luffy as a person anymore after he got his character assassinated. Lost interest in gorosei after they became bums. Most of the cast got humiliated and treated like shit by Oda.
We ran out of things to discuss.

2024.05.22 00:18 ayanisawesome Master’s interview at UniBo

Hello everyone! I am applying for Work and Organizational psychology program at UniBo, and I was selected for the interview which is gonna be next week. For the students that did the interview: What questions do they ask? The time slot for the interview is one and a half hour, is it actually that long? Do they ask in detail about the topics on the Call for Application?

2024.05.22 00:15 eschatologypilled Are most people not homophobic

This seems like a stupid question but please allow me to expand
So I've been using twitter a bit more often lately, and on there I see a lot of news and discussion about american politics. At the forefront of a lot of it is this constant war over LGBT issues, which also seem to be more extreme and more polarising than they are here. I know that we in the UK have our problems but the sheer passion some americans have when talking about this stuff is kind of shocking.
I grew up in a lefty area and now I'm a student, so most people I talk to seem to be quite liberal. I’m also a lesbian which I don't usually bring up unless there's a reason, but recently I've been slightly more cautious about being honest when the topic does come up. I'm just wondering if that’s reasonable……obviously I can read a room and wouldn’t come out unprovoked to a group of drunk 60-year-old tory MPs but is it silly to be so anxious around virtually everybody? Are most people chill?
edit am I getting downvoted because this is a stupid question if so please know I'm being sincere I'm just a stupid person
