2024.05.21 21:55 Particular_Speed_975 Thinking of independence from family?

For some background information, I am 19F Indian student going to my junior year of college. I moved to the United States, Pennsylvania for my college. I’ve been here two years now.
My family, my stepmom, my dad and my stepsister have since also moved to the United States, Chicago last year, one year ago, quoting “they want to be closer to me to help me.”
I’ve believed my family to be abusive, specifically my dad. I have since coming to college, tried to minimize contact with them, to no real avail. They get upset if I don’t call them everyday at least once, if I don’t visit on every break for the full duration of the break.
They have finance everything for me so far. I’ve worked campus jobs and have managed to save almost 7k USD.
My dad has been admitted to the hospital for cancer and has been undergoing treatment since November 2023, last 7 months.
I was forced to fly to help with whatever my they needed for all this time, while also forcing me to fly over to Chicago every other week during my semester for additional help.
For more details: when I say they force me, I mean that my stepmom states everything that is currently going on being stressful, which I’m sure it is, and using that as a reasoning to beat herself up and to not treat herself better until I come visit. I love my stepmom just as much as I do my biological mom and I don’t want to burden her, she also states my stepsister as wanting to see me and missing me as additional reasons for me to visit.
This last time that I intended to visit, I had told my stepmom that I’m visiting for only 10 days as I have an internship during the summer. She lashed out at me, saying that I’m selfish, don’t care about her or my sister and much less, my father. I was upset and had enough and said that I’d no longer be visiting for said 10 days.
After that, my stepmom made a series of calls to me and went back and forth, in which she listed all the sacrifices she and my dad made to pay for my college in the United states. Which made me feel guilty for being mad at them and hence, I flew to Chicago.
Now that I’m back at Chicago, my stepmom brought over my biological mom and my maternal grandmother. She yelled at me for overthinking all the times my father yelled and beat me, saying that it’s normal for an Indian family and that I should be grateful for them supporting me to study in the United States. (Which I am, but I also earned a majority of my college paid for by scholarships. My family can afford to send me to college as they have assets that are worth 2million USD now after they’ve sold a house worth 120k usd to send me to college. They have so far spent a maximum of 60k usd on my college so far)
My biological mother supported these statements and also told me a couple of things that my father did for me.
She also yelled at me for not understanding that my father was only frustrated with his life and that he was never happy about yelling at me or beating me. And further told me to transfer schools so I can form a new social circle who won’t “pollute my mind with stupid ideas like not coming back.”
My stepmom has also said she’ll contribute to the down payment of a car I’m planning to buy as I mentioned it earlier to make me stay with them for longer as “being with family is always a support. You cannot abandon or cut off your family”
I also have a fiance, 19M, that is in the United States and knows about this. My stepmom basically also said that I shouldn’t trust my fiance as he grew up in the United States and only after marriage can I trust anyone.
I just want to be financially independent so I don’t have to put up with my stepmom and my father yelling at me constantly and that I can’t trust my significant other and how they yell at me for talking to anyone but them.
I want to cut them off but it’s trust that it’s more financially beneficial to stay with them and to put up with everything.
What do I do?

2024.05.21 21:36 PrairieChild Some thoughts on race/ism in our state

South Dakota has its own particular brand of anti-Indigenous racism, and this is my take on it, as a white resident of Rapid City who lived on the reservation for over 20 years. To wit:
With some exceptions, most white South Dakotans are not openly and aggressively racially hostile. The days of “No Indians allowed” in shop windows are thankfully in the past. But a more pernicious strain of prejudice still permeates much of the culture. You hear it in conversations (or, at least, I do, when white people talk openly around me, assuming I am of like mind) and you often read it in social media postings, especially on news sites.
I’m not sure what to call the attitude in question, maybe “performative sympathy” or “passive-aggressive patronizing.” Basically, it’s when somebody laments how Natives in the state can’t “get it together,” can’t “get with the program,” can’t “get their lives on track,” can’t “give up alcohol/drugs,” etc. etc. (By “the program,” they generally mean assimilated American society.) This is usually couched in faux concern, as if the person saying it is genuinely puzzled and sorrowfully bewildered at this predicament. Often, a sad shake of the head will accompany this pronouncement.
The person in question, of course, rarely gives a care about Native people’s “plight,” and these pat statements are just a way of saying, “Oh well, what are ya gonna do with those folks?” and distancing oneself from the situation, shrugging and moving on to a happier topic of conversation. Why can’t “those people” get it together indeed?
When it comes up in a convo that I’m a participant in, I do my best to bring up the history of how things got to where they are today. I’m a history teacher, after all. I’m well-versed in the subjects of manifest destiny, colonialism, broken treaties, and the like. Usually their eyes will start to glaze over or they will start fidgeting and shuffling their feet, uncomfortable at the way the conversation is going, their mind doing its best to reject input that contradicts their view of the world, no matter how diplomatic and non-preachy I’m being. It’s not the tone that intimidates them and puts them off, it’s the very subject itself.
More often than not, after I’ve had my say, they will just mumble something along the lines of, “Yup, I don’t know how those people will ever get it together. It’s too bad,” as if I had never said anything. People’s sincerely-held beliefs are incredibly difficult to dislodge, as we all know. And being brought up white in South Dakota, unless your situation is significantly different from the norm, you get the same whitewashed story over and over, at home, at school, at church. You’ve heard it your whole life, and doggone it, it didn’t include big fancy words like “colonialism” that make people feel bad when they didn’t do anything wrong. So, the mind shuts out the competing information, stays closed.
And here’s the big secret that maybe you already know: If you don’t believe that history in any way informs the present (because it was “so long ago” or whatever), then the only other option is to – consciously or unconsciously – blame the people themselves. Think about it. If history doesn’t matter and generational trauma doesn’t exist and everyone is born at the same starting line, with the same obstacles stretching ahead of them in life, then the only possible blame for people not succeeding individually or collectively HAS to fall on the people themselves. This is the most pernicious aspect of South Dakota racism. At its root lies a belief that the reason why Native people have higher incarceration rates, lower graduation rates, higher rates of substance abuse, etc. etc. etc. is that the people themselves are somehow defective, somehow lesser. Lesser than whom? Lesser than the white majority.
This is white supremacy in one of its purest forms, but most people don’t recognize it as such. This white supremacy doesn’t necessarily wear a white robe or burn a tiki torch (although look at how they vote and they’re not far off), but it is an unearned superiority complex than many whites learn from a young age. “I don’t know what’s wrong with those Indians. What a pity,” with the implicit understanding that “we” are superior. How else can you explain our demographic superiority? Of course, you and I know the answer to that.
This is one of the single greatest obstacles to race relations in the state moving forward and true understanding and reconciliation happening. How can you understand a people when you see them as faulty, unable to progress, victims of nothing but their own indolence and failure to thrive? You have to put the blame for their lot in life squarely on their own shoulders because to do otherwise would mean interrogating your own state’s history and country’s history in a way that you can’t bear (not you, of course, innocent Reddit reader).
But you don’t want to hear about broken treaties. You don’t want to hear about stolen land. You don’t want to hear about historical trauma. You don’t want to hear about boarding school abuses. You just want a nice story where progress has always progressed and the white man brought the light of civilization into a dark continent and the light of the Gospel to the heathen. “My country, right or wrong” is just another way of saying that you take no responsibility for your country’s wrongs.
And “That was a long time ago” is the great hand-washing, the refrain of a people who dare not look into the mirror, dare not teach what really happened in the not-so-distant past. And so, you have a state where nearly all of the positions of power are held by whites, in government, business, school boards and administration, as well as nearly all the wealth in the state, all the best land, and you wonder how things got to be that way. But then you stop wondering because the questions it raises are too challenging. “Why can’t they get it together,” indeed.

2024.05.21 20:33 ThrowRA63773833 My wife (26F) refuses to talk to me (33M) after finding out about my affair. How do I get her to talk to me?

We are Indians and had an arranged marriage 4 years ago. She was a medical student and was in her last year of medical school when we got married. Since her college was in another state, she left to complete her studies after 1 month of our wedding.
She is a bit reserved and doesn’t engage in talks with anyone much, but otherwise she is a very sweet and kind person. Over the years,I have lacked in so many things, but, she has managed to keep it together without any complaints so far. But, despite all this, I have no feelings/connection towards her and I have felt sorry for her so many times.
Now, we have a 1 year old and I have found the girl of my dreams. Since we are muslims, I am allowed to marry her without divorcing my wife. Any conversation I brought up about this with my wife was met with strong resistance and she said if I were to marry her, she would divorce me.
I cannot leave this girl as she is everything to me now. She and I have an emotional bond like no other. We have even planned our future together. My wife was distraught when she came to know about this and when she messaged her, she was very rude towards her which ticked off my wife.
Now this is where I would be the asshole, I called up my wife and said she had no right to talk to her and stalk her social media handles. Out of anger, I may have said some things that shouldnt have been said. She cut the call after I said everything. I could hear her crying and thats probably what shook me inside. She is with her parents, she has blocked me everywhere and refuses to talk to me. Yesterday, I went to visit our child and she refused to even look at me. She looks depressed and broken. This has made me very sad.
Its so unlike her to stay silent towards me. The longest we have gone without talking is 2 hrs tops. Last I heard, she has been discussing about divorce to her family. I dont want a divorce. I have broken up with the other girl after seeing my wife’s reaction. But, in order to discuss about this to my wife, she wouldn’t even utter a word let alone look at my face since 2 weeks.
I admit what I did was wrong and I am willing to do whatever it takes to save our marriage from divorce. What can I do to make her talk to me again so that I can communicate with her?

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Reservations Necessary To Dine In Barcelona Restaurants?
Asking the age-old question of whether reservations are necessary to dine in Barcelona restaurants is like trying to solve a Rubik's cube. It can take some skill and finesse but, with patience and practice, the answer can be revealed!
To begin with, it generally depends on what kind of restaurant you're planning on visiting. For instance, if you choose to visit a high-end establishment downtown then making a reservation may be essential; however, many smaller restaurants don't require one. In Spain specifically, most local eateries will not insist upon an advanced booking - particularly for lunchtime meals or during off-peak hours. Here are three tips that could help:
Look up reviews online – they often indicate if reservations are recommended
Check out the restaurant website – this should have more information about their policies
Give them a call directly – speaking to staff members might give you the clearest insight into their practices
Ultimately though, there’s no need to worry unduly about making bookings since Barcelona has so much delicious food and friendly service readily available! Whether it's tapas bars, seafood cafes or traditional bistros customers just walk right in and enjoy themselves without any hassle. There’s something wonderfully freeing in knowing exactly where your next meal is coming from without having to plan ahead too far in advance. If freedom and spontaneity sound appealing when exploring this vibrant city then luckily there are plenty of options out there which don't require reservations!
What Is The Average Cost Per Person For A Meal In Barcelona?
When it comes to dining out, one of the first questions we all have is what it will cost. When considering Barcelona restaurants, this question becomes even more pertinent. But how much does a meal in Barcelona typically set you back?
The average cost per person for a meal at a restaurant in Barcelona can vary depending on the type of establishment and food chosen. Generally speaking, however, diners can expect to pay anywhere between:
€15 - 20 for an economical lunch or dinner
€25 - 40 for mid-range meals
€50+ for fine dining experiences
It's possible to enjoy delicious Catalan cuisine without breaking your budget; many eateries offer good value sets menus that include starter, main course & dessert from around €20/person. For those looking to save even more money but still eat well, there are numerous tapas bars offering small plates at relatively low prices. It's also worth noting that many establishments offer discounts during certain times such as early bird specials and happy hours where drinks may be heavily discounted or buy one get one free offer.
So if you're planning a trip to Barcelona and want to experience its amazing culinary culture without spending too much money then make sure you do some research ahead of time so you know exactly what kind of deals are available before heading out into town!

2024.05.21 17:51 Waste_Geologist_7768 Yakima and Eastern Washington

Yakima, WA is a city in Eastern Washington State. It is a central point to all of the PNW and the Rocky Mountain West (places like Boise, Spokane, Missoula, etc.) It is well known that Yakima, Yakima County, and other places around Eastern Washington has historically and is today a satellite hub within the US for Cartels to set up their various operations. Yakima is also nearby the notorious Yakama Nation, a confederacy of various Native American Tribes.
Yakima in recent history is a place often associated with Violence, missing persons, general crime, etc. Mexican transnational criminal organization have a known presence in Eastern Washington and especially Yakima.
As a PNW Native myself I have visited Yakima on many occasions, i’m also Native American and former drug abuser. Yakima is a place that I am very familiar with. What I wanted to do today is hopefully bring more attention to this place it seems that Yakima in general is not discussed as much in media . With everything we have been seeing of Cartels expanding their operations in the US (I.E. Cartels in Montana, Cartels on Indian Reservations) I feel now is the best time to bring more awareness to just how deep the cartels operate in and around Eastern Washington State.

Metal prices rose as a result of China’s efforts to calm the real estate market. Jake Fraser-McGurk Joins Australia’s T20 World Cup 2024 Squad as Travelling Reserve
Excitement is brewing as big-hitting batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk earns his spot in Australia’s travelling reserves for the upcoming T20 World Cup, set to kick off on June 1. Alongside him, Matthew Short adds depth to the squad, ready to step in as potential injury cover.

Lucknow: Delhi Capitals batter Jake Fraser-McGurk plays a shot during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 T20 cricket match between Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium, in Lucknow, Friday, April 12, 2024.
Fraser-McGurk, 22, has been turning heads with his explosive performances in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) while representing the Delhi Capitals. With an impressive 330 runs in nine innings and a striking strike rate of 234.04, he has undoubtedly caught the attention of selectors.
Chair of selectors, George Bailey, praised both players’ contributions, stating, “Matt and Jake made compelling cases for initial selection with their respective performances for Australia last summer and, in Jake’s case, more recently in the IPL.”
Recognizing the challenges of the tournament’s hectic schedule, Bailey emphasized the importance of having versatile players like Short and Fraser-McGurk on standby. “The short turnaround between fixtures makes it challenging to get players in at short notice in the event of injury,” Bailey explained. “Matt provides the squad with an all-round skill set option, while Jake provides further batting cover.”
As some players and staff enjoy a brief respite at home after the IPL, key figures such as Travis Head, Cameron Green, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Glenn Maxwell will join the squad later.
The Australian World Cup squad is gearing up for a rigorous training camp in Trinidad, scheduled to commence on Thursday. The camp will feature two practice matches against Namibia and West Indies on May 28 and 30, respectively, allowing the team to fine-tune their strategies and prepare for the intense competition ahead.
With a dynamic blend of seasoned veterans and rising talents like Fraser-McGurk and Short, Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign promises to be an exhilarating journey filled with anticipation and high expectations.

2024.05.21 04:06 Jim1648 Asian Americans Have The Most Income Mobility In Minnesota

Asian Americans have the most income mobility in Minnesota

Asian Minnesotans have higher income mobility rates than not only other racial groups in the state but also Asian Americans in other states. www.startribune.com.
Saengmany Ratsabout grew up on public assistance while his father, who had immigrated to the U.S. as a Lao refugee in the 1980s, worked at warehouses and factories to support a family of eight.
INCOME MOBILITY
His was the first generation to attend college, and after starting out making $12 an hour at a social services nonprofit, Ratsabout's income steadily rose as he changed jobs, earned more degrees and climbed the career ladder. The researcher specializing in Southeast Asian studies now makes $110,000 as the executive director of the East Side Freedom Library, which has allowed him and his wife — the daughter of Hmong refugees — to pursue opening their own Lao coffee business.
Ratsabout's steady growth in income tells the story of Asian American economic success in Minnesota. New data the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis compiled found Asian Minnesotans have higher income mobility rates than not only other racial groups in Minnesota but also Asian Americans in other states. The trend is most stark at the lowest income quartile.
Asian Minnesotans in the lowest-earning group made less than $12,940 in 2014. By 2019, a worker in this group had a 57% chance of moving up income groups and a 43% chance of staying at the bottom group or having no wage income at all. The same pattern holds true for Asian Americans who earned up to $32,990 in 2014. Earners in this group had about a 36% probability of moving up one or more quartiles within five years, while all other racial groups had odds below 30%. Ratsabout, 42, said he and his wife "certainly have had mobility."
The data does not break out nations of origin for Asian Americans, grouping together disparate communities with very different paths to this country. Minnesota's largest Asian American community is Hmong, who began resettling here in the 1970s after allying with the U.S. military in the war against Communists in Laos and then had to rise up from poverty as refugees. Meanwhile, the second- and third-largest groups of Asian Minnesotans are of Indian and Chinese heritage and often come to the state as college students or professionals with specialized skills.
There is no single explanation for Asian Minnesotans' income gains, but members of those groups point to a pressure to succeed in practical careers and an emphasis on education as a few shared pathways.
Consistent growth The Fed data shows once Asian Minnesotans reach the highest income levels, this group also has unusually high rates of "persistence," meaning their incomes don't fall back down again.
Many Indian immigrants move here on visas for highly specialized workers, which could explain why their income stays high. But that also comes with an added burden. Eden Prairie resident Murthy Ivaturi moved to the U.S. from India in 2016 to work in IT on an H-1B visa and said he feels he needs to constantly upgrade his skills and perform at a high level while he waits for his green card application to process amid an enormous backlog.
"We need to ensure we maintain our status," Ivaturi said. "That means we should have specialized skills always and we should prove … exceptional talent. We always keep ourselves running in the race and updating ourselves technology-wise."
He added: "There's a lot of pressure that comes with that."
Pressure to thrive — whether to escape poverty, improve chances of remaining in the country or satisfy personal or cultural expectations — might be another reason for Asian Minnesotans' financial rise. Another could be the state's general economy and a host of social service organizations welcoming refugees and immigrants. The Hmong American Partnership, for instance, provides job training in manufacturing, health care, IT and transportation. The Karen Organization of Minnesota also offers vocational training and job counseling to the newest wave of Asian refugees.
"We don't have an explanation for what makes Minnesota different for Asian earnings compared to Asian earnings in the U.S.," said Illenin Kondo, senior research economist with the Opportunity and Inclusive Growth Institute at the Fed of Minneapolis.
He noted nationally, 35% of Asian Americans in the bottom income quartile have a college education compared to 18% of everyone else. But in Minnesota, the gap is small: 25% of Asian Americans in the lowest income group are college-educated compared to 20% of others. So education can't fully account for the difference. Kondo also pointed out earnings for foreign-born workers nationally have been outpacing their American-born counterparts through the two decades leading to the pandemic.
"It's very strong for top earnings, but it's true across the distribution … that could be playing out a little more strongly in Minnesota," Kondo said.
This picture for Asian Minnesotans isn't universal, though. A 2021 report from the Coalition of Asian American Leaders found many felt systemic racism and structural barriers prevented the community from improving economic mobility and building wealth.
Lee Pao Xiong, director of the Center for Hmong Studies at Concordia University, recalled having 30 relatives on public assistance in California working low-wage jobs during the 1990s. As a Hmong refugee in Minnesota, he successfully encouraged them to move to his state for better employment and affordable housing.
Those family members started out driving buses and working in factories, left behind government reliance and worked their way up to stability. They and other Hmong Americans also focused on education as a way out of poverty, Xiong noted.
Now, more than half of Hmong people in Minnesota own their own home. Xiong said those who came here as children, as well as the second generation, are succeeding.
"That's the spirit of the Hmong community," he said.
Yigang Wang grew up in China and earned a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering in California before moving to the Twin Cities in 2010 to start his career. His income steadily progressed as he advanced through the ranks and switched jobs several times, ultimately landing at his current role as an electrical engineering manager in Eden Prairie. Wang, of Plymouth, said he has found Minnesota's job market to be friendly toward Asian Americans and ripe for good engineers.
"Minnesota is very committed to promoting diversity and inclusion, not just in the university but also in the company," Wang, 45, said.
Chen Zhou is vice president of the Minnesota China Friendship Garden Society Board of Directors and lives in Plymouth. Zhou also said the state is generally welcoming to foreign-born newcomers, noting high participation in Asian American festivals and events.
"They feel they are part of this state," Zhou said of Asian Minnesotans. "They feel they are part of the community."
JERRY HOLT, STAR TRIBUNE Saengmany Ratsabout and his wife, Gao Lee, at their warehouse office at Uprooted Coffee in St. Paul on May 8. Ratsabout's rise in income enabled Lee to to quit her $94,000 human resources job and focus solely on developing the coffee business. The couple work with distributors who bring coffee from Laos to the U.S. for the pair to roast locally and sell online. Refugee mentality Ratsabout initially left a job paying around $57,000 at University of Minnesota to start a business with his wife, Gao Lee, in 2020. But their plan of selling Southeast Asian drinks at festivals imploded when the pandemic arrived. Ratsabout returned to the U as a program manager at the Institute for Advanced Studies in 2022, making $75,000, and saw his income leap to six figures when he moved to a job at the library.
Lee went from being born in public housing to eventually making nearly $94,000 working in human resources for a philanthropic foundation before her husband's rise in income enabled her to quit her job and focus solely on developing their coffee business. Now 41, Lee said it was mentally hard to leave behind that salary to pursue Uprooted Coffee because of the refugee mentality of not having enough.
But after years focusing on building her income, she decided she was ready to fulfill her passion, too. The couple now works with distributors who bring coffee from Laos to the U.S. for the pair to roast locally and sell online as well as at various stores and cafes, including the Minneapolis Laotian restaurant Khâluna. But for the parents of two teenage children in Newport, arriving at this point took many years with no generational wealth as a fallback.
"Among our friends who are doing well financially who are Asian Americans, a lot of them went into careers that they were almost guaranteed a good financial package … because they have such a commitment to making their parents proud and supporting the extended family," Lee said. "So I think sometimes in our culture, that outweighs your own interests, your own passions, a bit."
