Financial Independence / Retire Early

2011.11.10 16:15 Financial Independence / Retire Early

This is a place for people who are or want to become Financially Independent (FI), which means not having to work for money. Financial Independence is closely related to the concept of Early Retirement/Retiring Early (RE) - quitting your job/career and pursuing other activities with your time. At its core, FI/RE is about maximizing your savings rate (through less spending and/or higher income) to achieve FI and have the freedom to RE as fast as possible.

2024.05.22 02:06 liam-rodri23680 Disappointment in my Math Grade

Failing my math test has left me utterly disappointed and frustrated with myself. Despite putting in hours of study and preparation, I made several silly mistakes that ultimately cost me a passing grade. One of the most glaring errors I made was misinterpreting the instructions for solving quadratic equations. Instead of factoring correctly, I rushed through the process and overlooked crucial steps, leading to incorrect solutions. It's agonizing to realize that such a simple oversight derailed my entire performance on that section of the test.
Another mistake I made was in my haste to complete the algebraic manipulations. I failed to double-check my calculations, resulting in errors in basic arithmetic operations. Simple additions and multiplications that I could have easily corrected with a bit more attention slipped through the cracks, dragging down my overall score. It's frustrating to know that my impatience and lack of thoroughness undermined the hard work I had put into mastering the material.
Moreover, my inability to manage my time effectively during the test further compounded the problem. I found myself rushing through the last few questions, sacrificing accuracy for speed in a desperate attempt to finish on time. This reckless approach backfired spectacularly, as I ended up making careless errors in those critical moments when I should have been exercising caution. The regret of not pacing myself properly and allowing panic to take over is a bitter pill to swallow, especially knowing that it directly contributed to my disappointing performance on the test.

Hi everyone,
I'm considering a job change and have been redoing my curriculum. I have applied to maybe 30 jobs in Switzerland and Luxembourg but no luck so far.
I've applied to about 40 jobs with 1 callback that led to nowhere.
If you have any tips as to what could be improved I'd really appreciate it!

2024.05.22 02:04 First-Veterinarian-2 Suspended Ukrainian shop for moving to USA - Unjust Account Suspension after Etsy support help

Hello Etsy Community,
Prior to the onset of the war, my family and I had a thriving presence on Etsy. We ran a production unit with a dedicated team that ensured exceptional service and top-notch products, as evidenced by our glowing reviews. Our journey on Etsy began long before the conflict, where we crafted and sold our goods with pride and dedication.
However, as the war unfolded, the landscape around our production facility became increasingly perilous, with bombs falling dangerously close. Faced with this escalating danger, we were compelled to leave our home, including the shop which temporarily closed during this tumultuous period. Despite the upheaval, we remained resilient, driven by a determination to rebuild our lives and our business.
Upon resettling, we made the decision to establish a local production facility, with the unwavering support of our dedicated team who had also relocated. Together, we embarked on the journey of resurrecting our business in a new environment, fueled by the same commitment to quality and service that had defined us on Etsy.
However, our efforts to regain stability were met with a devastating blow. A single decision made by Etsy and one of its representatives, who mistakenly altered the data associated with our shop, led to the destruction of everything we had painstakingly rebuilt. This decision, which violated Etsy's policies, resulted in the suspension of our shop, leaving us reeling from the loss not just financially but emotionally as well.
I haven't had any violations or problems with the store, and I think the problem is that two days before the ban, I reached out to Etsy Support with a query regarding the possibility of changing the country associated with my shop from Ukraine to the USA. However, to my surprise and dismay, the support representative (I have his name in support request, but I think I can't write there), took unilateral action and modified my account's country setting without my explicit consent.
This change, made without proper consultation or authorization, has resulted in the suspension of my shop, impacting not only my financial stability but also my ability to conduct business on Etsy. The shop in question holds immense personal and professional significance for me and my family, serving as a vital source of income and a platform for showcasing our creative endeavors.
I implore the Etsy community to stand with us in this time of need. Our journey is not just about business; it's about resilience and hope. We call upon Etsy's leadership to reevaluate their actions, to recognize the human impact of their decisions, and to work towards a resolution that honors the integrity of their platform and the livelihoods of their sellers.
Thank you for your support and solidarity.
Warm regards, Dima

2024.05.22 02:03 Commercial-Scene109 5 Weeks Out

Hello, 2024 Grad here. I'm looking for advice on how to round out my studying. I test 6/25.
So far: I have completed reading the RX Prep book (just reading/comprehending and highlighting important information). I've made flashcards for the required formulas. I waited until the end to work through the calculations chapters as slowly as I needed to and just finished up today. The whole book took me a solid 2 months with rotations and now work.
The plan:
  1. Revisit difficult topics like ID, ONC, HIV, anticoag, etc .(suggestions appreciated) and work through them again more thoroughly. Summarize info and revisit weekly.
  2. Complete practice questions and practice calculations daily. I think this might get me the best bang for my buck because I haven't done enough practice questions IMO.
  3. Handwrite all study gal tips and key drug guys onto flashcards. Revisit weekly.
  4. Take the UWorld practice exam, required formulas test, and pre-naplex the first week of June.
  5. Skip family vacation to study more if I bomb them and freak out for 3 weeks until I walk into PearsonVue :-D.
Thoughts on the plan? Advice? Do's and don'ts? Words of encouragement?
Thanks!

The World, the Flesh, and the Devil Pt1, Ch3.0: And The Devil Sends Cooks
Uranus - Secret Underwater Lab, formerly of Tyl Regor
It was a strange homecoming for the Grineer tubeman Kahl-175 after they left Cetus and departed Earth. The two of them had barely managed to exit the atmosphere when the RailJack expertly maneuvered in the zero-G environment to lock umbilicus and essentially tow the Skaut along, Cephalon Cy’s voice broadcasting over the comm-link.
“Locked and loaded. Uranus course plotted. Reliquary Drive online.”
“Belay. Utilize the solar rail network instead.” Wukong said quickly.
“Affirmative. Update: riding the rails will be two hours with current traffic volume.”
Wukong waved a taloned hand dismissively, “Acknowledged. Let’s get under-way.”
Kahl-175’s deep-set features were furrowed and perplexed, his voice rumbling out from under his camo helmet. “This longer. You said Blue-Girl saved with plan.”
“That’s correct, Kahl. But I don’t like being under anyone’s thumb, so to speak, thus we’re using the solar rails instead.” the space simian said over his shoulder as his tail wrapped around the ceremonial urn and walked with it towards the umbilicus. “I’ll be aboard the Railjack, stay here and monitor the link between the ships as they’re non-standard connections.”
Kahl-175 made a meaty fist in his ballistics glove with his thumb extended, gazing at it curiously, “Under whose thumb?” he mused aloud but when he looked up, he was alone.
The solar rail network was a series of space stations at nearly every major planet which provided relatively safe and efficient travel to and from each other for vessels that weren’t inherently capable of the velocity required for interplanetary travel. For a modest transit fee, and another less-than-modest bribe, you could ride the light-rails inspection free with the other jockeys from one end of the Origin system to the other in less than a day. As previously stated, it was relatively safe but there are always reports from time to time of space pirates and the like, interrupting the flow of orbital and extra-orbital traffic with their brutal raids and swift pilferings. Such is life in the Origin system.
Thankfully that was not the case when the Railjack reached Mars’ solar rail junction with the Skaut in tow, which appeared to be light with transiting craft. The singular but sizable fee was paid, as it was not standard procedure to have two separate craft buddy-jump together as it was likely an attempt to avoid paying a second transit fee, but Cy cited to the junction cephalon an obscure and entirely likely out-of-date policy about military vessels that was entirely too long and too complicated for it to argue with.
Once their tethered ships were aligned and they were given a healthy push to the next rail transit at Ceres, Cy gave a short laugh with Wukong standing at the Navigation display.
“Ignorant specter. Solar rail junctions have a one minute window to launch. Cephalon interactions, after the fee paid, are manually overridden after sixty seconds. I call it the Ordis Clause. Ha ha.”
“Clever. Ceres to Jupiter, to Saturn, to Uranus then?”
“Correct.”
“Highest degree of probability of attack from undesirables?” the space simian inquired, tilting his head back and looking up at the ceiling from their mapped path after noting the region that Cy marked while he asked.
“Ceres to Jupiter. Sixty-four point six percent chance of incident this solar cycle.”
“Noted. Considering we’re towing another ship, we’re two for the price of one. They’ll probably make a run at us. Link comms to the Skaut. Kahl-175?”
After a brief pause, “Kahl here. Ship still secure.”
“There is a chance we’ll be attacked during the next transit jump at Ceres, so immediately after the push, I’m going to seal the two ships and detach the umbilicus. If we do get attacked, we won’t be connected and can maneuver independently. Are you able to pilot that vehicle in a fight?”
“Kahl came out tube able.” he rumbled quite proudly. “Kahl need someone to shoot tail gun.”
“I’ll handle that. Thank you, Kahl.” and as he spoke, another Wukong came down out of the dorsal turret and headed over to the Skaut while they were still connected.
“Welcome.”
The remaining transit to Ceres was uneventful with Wukong leaving the piloting and forward artillery to Cephalon Cy after he took position in the dorsal turret, which would allow him three hundred and sixty degrees of upper hemisphere coverage. And yet another Wukong was waiting patiently towards the rear of the vessel near what had been deemed the Slingshot. Similar to a coil- or rail-gun, it magnetically propelled whatever object inside it to incredible velocities, and depending on the object, the ability to gain forcible entry to large space-faring ships. This Wukong had also taken the time to don an Itzal-model Archwing chassis and weapon harness allowing him to maneuver in zero-g along with providing more-agile fire support. He wouldn’t be as well protected outside the RailJack’s impressively dense hull but the Itzal was specifically designed for stealth engagement with sensor bafflers and visual distortion, which cumulatively would render him effectively invisible against the black backdrop of stellar space.
Kahl-175 was familiar with the concept of vehicular space combat but he was a foot-slogger by design, so he had spent the intervening time memorizing the various switches and modes he would have to operate in a combat scenario.
“Autocannons online? Check. Engine boost charged? Check. Shields? Hull integrity? Check.”
The Ceres rail junction inquired electronically, re-confirmed their transit and payment, then pushed them along without any audio interaction. Once the tethered craft were outside of the junction’s sensor range, Wukong and Kahl went ahead and locked down their respective vessels, sealing off and retracting the umbilicus to coast together towards the scattered remains of a former asteroid belt that drifted between Ceres and Jupiter. The iron and rubido composition of asteroids had a scattering effect on ship’s sensors, which made it an effective area for ambushes.
Radio silence.
Space pirates, as a whole, aren’t particularly intelligent except for their captains and maybe their enterprising first mates, but even they were more cunning than brilliant. Smarter raiders would have chosen to attack commercial vessels, but perhaps the allure of capturing military vessels and adding them to their armada was too good to ignore.
Once the RailJack and Skaut were fully within the scan-disruptive effects of the surrounding debris, the pirates struck, swarming out from their hiding holes, mostly naturally occurring crevasses, and approached the pair from several attack vectors, radio comms exploding with unshielded demands to surrender and prepare to be boarded.
Cy broadcast in a flattened tone, “Raiders, your short lives are about to become crap dipped in misery. Crew, if you would.”
The Grineer military-grade autocannons on the nose and tail cut loose at that moment as well the Railjack’s Vekti model Laith shrapnel blasters unloaded their barrages from the forward artillery points and dorsal turret while simultaneously executing a split-Y maneuver to distance their vessels away and broaden the enemy’s field of fire from being concentrated on them together.
Wukong stepped onto the chambering sconce, powering up the Archwing chassis, which dutifully fed him into the Slingshot’s barrel.
“Cy, if you’ve got eyes on the lead vessel.” the celestial chimp prompted.
“Prepare to ring their doorbell.”
The RailJack performed a short engine boost, abruptly thrusting forward to gain some distance from the pursuing raiders, quickly spun port-side before fully stopping to briefly divert engine power to the Slingshot, and with a crackle of discharged electricity briefly along the skin of the ship, Wukong was fired out towards a large Corpus crewship. Cy continued his turning maneuver and plowed forward back into the teeth of the now-incoming pirates, guns blazing.
Wukong smashed explosively through the reinforced hull of the crewship, a brilliant shower of sparks flying as he ruptured conduits and circuitry in the skin of the vessel, pulling the emergency release valve on the Archwing unit right before impact, leaving it in standby mode outside the ship with its stealth systems engaged.
Klaxons blared deafeningly with flashing lights at the explosive decompression in the area of the ship he erupted into, which appeared to be an upper bay. The space simian reached out and found the comforting weight of his staff in his hand, raptor-beak blades no longer hinged down but outward like sickles ready to thresh wheat.
He stalked forward at a quickened pace, eyes fixed forward to the corridor outside the bay. Motion ahead.
Uranus - Secret Underwater Lab, formerly of Tyl Regor
The Grineer cloning facility on Uranus, once considered hidden beneath its vast ocean, had been operated under the sole discretion of the renowned biologic experimenter Tyl Regor seeking a reliable means to either treat or ultimately cure the clone rot which plagued the Grineer forces. It provided all the necessary infrastructure that Wukong required for this part of his plan and as it was relatively difficult to reach without detection, they would hopefully remain undisturbed for the duration.
The Skaut craft slowly surfaced into the dock section of the facility, grapples launched, reeled-in, and locked. Wukong regarded their impressive haul of raw Tower material while speaking into the comm to Cy as the exit ramp descended to the loading dock.
“Return to Earth and get those repairs taken care of as soon as possible. You’re free to resume Reliquary Drive use at this time.”
“Inquiry: why is it now permissible to use the-” Cy began.
“That’ll be all. Over and out.” Wukong interjected before muting the comm and turning to regard Kahl-175 with his impassive countenance, the high-pitched screams of the dying space pirates still ringing in his ears. “Do you know this place, Kahl?”
The Grineer tubeman had indeed been looking about fervently, eye, both natural and cybernetic, darting around like he was attempting to spot incoming sniper fire. “Yes. Born here.”
“Is that going to be a problem?”
“No problem. Familiar ground.” he replied with a small shake of his head.
“Excellent. Then I shouldn’t have to show you around.” Wukong said with a curt toss of his own head towards the chamber exit. “Let’s get this loaded onto the lift to sub-level 13-40 with the large centrifurnace. We’ve got a significant amount of work ahead of us.”
Wukong firmly closed the lid atop the thermal centrifuge, spinning the wheel tight after flipping the latches until the seal indicator flashed green. The space simian stepped off the top of the two story tall machine and drifted downward to the floor next to Kahl-175.
“Big tubeman.” the former Grineer rumbled.
“Not exactly.” Wukong replied laconically while giving a thorough final check over the machine as he walked around it. It was essentially a large, transparent sphere, now full to the brim with the Unum’s Tower flesh, that would use a low, simmering heat and centrifugal force to separate the varying densities of organic material, which would either be siphoned off to the seven surrounding smaller, vertical tubes for storage or reintroduced to the suspension for further rendering.
“And by that, I mean this machine will be doing the exact opposite of growing flesh. It will break down the material to its most basic parts, or specifically to the one part I require, which is called ‘amino’. The basic building blocks of life, Kahl.” the mercurial monkey explained as he approached the control panel, striking several keys in quick succession. A slow but insistent hum started beneath their feet, drawing Kahl’s attention downward. “There. I’ve initiated the process by activating the heater cores beneath the centrifuge. It will take some time to bring the mass up to proper temperature, so you have time at your leisure to either eat, rest, whatever it is that you do when you aren’t involving yourself in guerilla tactics with the Narmer.”
Kahl-175 opened his mouth to reply as he brought his attention up from the vibrating floor only to find himself alone with his thoughts in the very place he was created.
A full day passed before Wukong would find Kahl-175 in the centrifuge chamber, which had significantly grown in temperature and noise in the interim. The tubeman was watching the machine with an intense expression, almost a rapt fascination that Wukong wasn’t sure the former Grineer had noticed his approach.
He simply said, “Wukong.” to which the space simian inclined his head in acknowledgement before taking a lap around the machine, noticing that the lateral tubes were indeed beginning to collect liquid. Wukong gestured to the tubeman over to the control panel as he read over the various gauges and indicators on the large holographic display. The vast majority of this field of science wasn’t within Wukong’s realm of esoteric knowledge, but thankfully the computer knew what to do as it had been originally designed to perform a very similar function to Tyl Regor’s tubemen that failed his various experiments.
“Kahl, this reading here is the important one.” Wukong said, pointing a glinting talon at the display before gesturing to one vertical tube over his shoulder nearest the control panel. “That tube is collecting the first render of amino. It’s unfortunately also the material that takes the longest to process, however as we are now operating at full temperature and speed, it’ll go quicker moving forward. Once that tube is full, which means the gauge will be read one hundred percent, we’ll make our trip to Deimos and talk to Kaelli.”
Kahl went to speak, just opening his mouth before Wukong interjected with a raised hand, “Yes, I know you’re eager to move forward but I require a bit more patience and there is still work to be done here, work you and I can accomplish together which should take your mind off things. How does that sound?”
“How long?” Kahl inquired finally.
“Three days.”
“When can we start?”
Kahl-175 and Wukong worked tirelessly over the next few days, disconnecting equipment from one of the various entrances to the facility and then reinstalling around the amino collection tubes as to prevent any type of viral or bacterial contamination, breaking only for Kahl-175 to get food and grab maybe a few hours of sleep before getting back to it. The amino, in its purest state, was extremely susceptible to biological influence and it was of the utmost importance to keep it free from contagion. The devices were powerful entropic field generators that any organic substance would be disintegrated passing through them and their calibrations were very delicate and their alignment with respect to each other very specific as not to inadvertently destroy the sample that they were meant to protect. After the final series of calibrations were complete, Wukong stepped away from the console and turned to Kahl-175.
“It’s time. Let’s go.”

I have tried so many things to get this to work with no luck. From what I've seen in other threads it could be a corrupted ISO, but I downloaded it directly from windows and have tried both dynamix file manager to upload and tried to copy it directly to the ISO file with no luck. I think it could be that I don't have a GPU in the server and have only been using integrated graphics but don't currently have a GPU laying around to test it. CPU is 12th Gen Intel® Core™ i5-12600K @ 4455 MHz. Tried typing reset into the shell with no luck. Any help is appreciated.

2024.05.22 01:48 Lowriskplease hot water tank rental thoughts

Thoughts on renting these? I'd never thought of it before. I live in a condo and my current tanks needs replacing. I like the idea of no maintenance fees, no charges for service and repairs etc.
I assume the negative here is that rentalafter 8 years that I've paid, with my monthly retnal fees, the total cost of the unit if I just bought it and every payment after that is a "waste".
It seems that some contracts let you replace the tank at any time if you so choose though. So If I calculate I've paid for the tanks purchase cost after 8 years, I could switch to a new tank and new rental contract and continue on....seems fine in that case?
Or is that not how those contracts usually work?

2024.05.22 01:46 ComplexAnnual1823 I’m always doing something wrong at work

I was asked by my manager to check some calculations the day prior, we had a few days til the project needed to be completed so I was going to start first thing in the morning. I got to work today and did my typical routine, grabbed some coffee, some fruit and sat at my desk. Within 15 mins, my manager asked me to chat so I called her and she’s frantic. She’s blaming me for the math being incorrect and now she’s shared it with the whole team and said somethings that tbh made me want to throw my hands up and quit. She lightly accused me of not doing anything at work. While offering to help I was told “You don’t even know what’s wrong”. So I shut my mouth and let her troubleshoot on the call. After feeling pretty bad the entire day, I did some digging and turns out the original information provided to me (by my manager) was incorrect and the numbers were highly overestimated in comparison to our client provided numbers, calculations were correct tho! I just brought this to her attention to be like “see it wasn’t my fault”, but of course very polite. My manager just said “ok”.
I’m aware of some things I could have done differently but my blood pressure is high to say the least lol

2024.05.22 01:45 bestdna2024 Seeking Help to prevent further e-commerce Affiliate set-up Disasters!

I’m seeking advice on implementing an affiliate program for my well-established e-commerce business. In January, recognizing the potential of affiliate marketing, I hired a specialist to help set up the program from scratch. We began by integrating the Share-A-Sale plugin directly into my WooCommerce site, which turned out to be a major headache, but we managed to complete it. A month later, as interest grew and new members joined my affiliate network, I decided to add a partnership page to my website. Unfortunately, the implementation led to a significant conflict when the affiliate specialist’s coworker added the YITH plugin. This caused my checkout to stop working, creating a mess and resulting in a significant loss of revenue. The specialist advised that these plugins aren't necessary for running an efficient affiliate program, yet we are on several different platforms including FlexOffers, Share-A-Sale, ClickBank, CJ Publisher, and Awin. I've been extremely frustrated and confused about how to manage all this while running a business and ensuring seamless integration. After doing my research, I've found that the correct process would have been to: Install the YITH plugin first, Then integrate Share-A-Sale through it. Is the correct? After losing thousands of dollars in revenue, I now understand that to effectively run our Affiliate Marketing Program, I need to: Uninstall Share-A-Sale. Install the YITH plugin. Integrate Share-A-Sale with the YITH plugin. This sequence should ensure a smooth and efficient operation of our program. Initially, I was misadvised to add Share-A-Sale directly to the site rather than integrating an affiliate management plugin first.
I'm also exploring other plugins such as: Pretty Links Thirsty Affiliates Monster Insights Affiliate WP Slice WP Here are my questions: The Affiliate Specialist insists that I do not need a plugin or a Partners page to effectively run the affiliate program. I'm having a hard time believing this and want to be sure I'm correct before making any accusations. Can anyone with experience clarify this?
Is the YITH plugin the best choice for managing multiple platforms like FlexOffers, Share-A-Sale, ClickBank, CJ Publisher, and Awin, or are there better plugins available?
Are there more effective ways or essential plugins to seamlessly integrate and manage these platforms?
Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated, as affiliate marketing seems to be a bit overwhelming.
Thank you in advance for your help!

2024.05.22 01:43 domints Carpuride logo generator

I want to share with you the thingy that I've created, it's working, but it might be rough around the edges (looks-wise mostly).
https://carpu.dszymanski.pl/
You select the model, you upload image, you click the "Download boot logo" button and you get `isp_part.bin` file, which you can put onto USB stick/SD Card to change your carpuride's boot logo :)
It's doing all the calculation, generation etc in your browser so if you're low on memory it might get a bit mushy for you for a moment. No file is sent out of your computer, it all stays on your device :D
I've tested it on my W708 (car unit), W502 (motorcycle unit) and W103 for one dude on Facebook, all happy :) If you know the dimensions for other devices I could add them, if you have `isp_part.bin` that support created for you and can share it, it would be even better because I could ensure that the format stays the same :)
Any additions appreciated, I might add them to this page :)

2024.05.22 01:43 udubber3 Modify binary plug-in without closing Eclipse?

Hello,
My apologies in advance if this has been addressed numerous times, but I am a bit flooded on resources related to ESAPI, so it is a bit hard to keep everything straight. These resources, however, have helped me get a good start on my application.
I first started with a simple single file plugin that displays some information via the window (no WSL/Xaml files, keeping it simple). Once I get the selections from the users I enter a click button function (again, my apologies on the lack on C# nomenclature, I'm a newbie), I want to manipulate data with the patient (add a course, calculate dose, etc...). This is where I learned that single file plugins don't support writing to the database (although I think I learned this earlier in tutorials). So I just ported all my code over to a binary plug-in and effectively works the same. The major downside I am running into with this method is that whenever I change something on the code, I have to close eclipse, build the esapi.dll file, and then relaunch eclipse. Is there any way I can make changes and view their impact without having to fully re-launch eclipse?
Thanks,
-a newbie

But I measured with the calculator and got 32E but since I’m in Canada, I ordered the 32ddd below and the wires reach around under my armpits and i can’t wear it more than a few hours. The band does feel okay and everything is contained in the cups (but too much on the side).

2024.05.22 01:37 Beautiful_Dog5553 Contractor not building to plans; would getting a new contractor to finish be hard?

I hired a contractor to remove a load bearing wall for me. They had engineering plans drawn up by a structural engineer AFTER we executed the contract. The contract states that the contractor must build to the engineering plans.
The plans include a new concrete footing under the house that is needed to guarantee the structural integrity of the house by bearing the load that has been redistributed to a new post. This new footing was not discussed prior to contract execution, or even prior to the commencement of the project work. It was only "discovered" 2 weeks into the project when we failed our county inspection for not building to the engineering plans. Now the contractor is claiming that this was "unforeseen" and is insisting on writing up a change order to the contract to charge me the cost to install the footing (in addition to the original contract pricing). My stance is that this cost should already be included in the initial contract price, given that the engineering plans clearly state the new footing must be installed, and the contract says they must build to the plans.
If I refuse to agree to the change order + additional cost, the contractor can terminate our contract. If this were to happen, how hard would it be to find a new contractor to finish the remaining work in the project? (install the concrete footing, repair drywall, install hardwood flooring, and paint) Would we need to get an entirely new permit with the county, or could the new contractor perform the work under the existing permit?

2024.05.22 01:35 Hotjoe91 Steps counted during exercise?

I couldn't find the exact answer I am looking for anywhere so I figured I'd ask you all. I use Samsung Health/smartwatch to track my steps and workouts and sync that with MFP to work out a calorie deficit. I noticed that while doing an elliptical workout not only were the calories burned counted for the workout but also my step count went up greatly with the workout naturally. I feel like this is inflating the calories burned calculation? I feel like steps shouldnt be counted during a cardio workout as the calories burned are already being calculated from the workout and counting both is falsely inflating the calories burned. Am I alone in this opinion?

2024.05.22 01:33 view-from-afar NHTSA Mandate Industry Comments Suggest Significant ADAS Hardware Upgrades Required for Compliance

Common themes emerge from industry comments preceding the issuance of the final NHTSA rule. Note, extracts below are from only the first 1/3 of the 300+ page ruling read so far:
Commenters raised potential technical challenges to effective implementation of the proposed requirement. For example, Honda was concerned about AEB and radar sensor limitations when operating at high speeds—mainly the complex interdependency between speed and the distance and accuracy at which objects must be detected to be avoided (or even to mitigate a crash). Honda noted that higher speeds mean that objects will need to be detected at greater distances, and at greater distances there is less image resolution, greater positional error, and greater impact from things like roadway geometry. Honda and Porsche stated that requiring braking to occur at unrestricted high speeds leads to misidentification of objects and increases false positive activations. Honda further asserted that camera resolution is limited by the pixel count on the image capture chip and that at longer distances, the number of pixels for an object will be reduced, resulting in blur that makes it difficult to detect objects (the blur can be further exacerbated by the designed focal length of the lens). Further, Honda stated that a higher resolution can be achieved only through new sensor hardware that would require further developmental work as well as more processing power, including a change of imaging processing electronic control unit (ECU). Honda stated that for camera-radar fusion systems, small errors in the fusion algorithm are amplified at higher speeds (due to the longer distances) and could compromise the system's performance. Additionally, according to Honda, these reductions in sensor accuracy significantly increase the risk of misidentification of potential objects and may lead to excessive false positive activations, potentially creating negative safety consequences. This could include situations where the system mistakenly recognizes the same lane as the adjacent lane or roadway objects as other vehicles. Other commenters also raised concerns about the potential for false activations caused by the need for AEB to operate at very high speeds. For example, Volkswagen commented that false activation becomes more of a risk as speeds increase, and that these risks are not controllable, as defined in ISO 26262. Commenters raised concerns about whether braking was the most appropriate avoidance maneuver in high-speed scenarios. Honda was concerned that AEB activation might interfere with other technologies such as the Automatic Emergency Steering. Mitsubishi, and Toyota echoed the Alliance’s concern that in some situations AEB activation while traveling at high speed may induce unstable vehicle dynamics. Mitsubishi stated that these situations may occur due to unfavorable interactions with road surface conditions, road curvature, or for other unpredictable reasons. Mitsubishi thought that such activation could also lead to unexpected outcomes for a vehicle following the subject vehicle.
...Commenters suggested a number of different solutions to resolve their concerns. Most requested that the all-speeds requirement be removed. Alternatively, Honda and others (as noted earlier) asked that NHTSA establish a maximum speed at which AEB detection performance is assessed according to an established test procedure. Volkswagen asked that NHTSA exclude activation against vulnerable road users at high speeds, believing it would decrease false positive rates significantly. Volkswagen thought this could be justified as pedestrians would not be expected on the roads with these higher speeds. p.59-
The Alliance, Honda, NADA, Porsche, and Volkswagen suggested that the agency should allow manual deactivation to mitigate consumer dissatisfaction. Honda and NADA also stated that not allowing deactivation may lead to substantially higher false positive rates, while AAA stated that allowing for automatic or manual deactivation could increase consumer acceptance and minimize the perception that the systems are overbearing. NADA also stated that AEB false positives are a significant source of consumer complaints about AEB systems and that only 59 percent of respondents to a Consumer Reports survey indicated that they were satisfied with their AEB systems ...
NHTSA is not persuaded by comments that suggest that not permitting deactivation would lead to substantially higher false positive rates. NHTSA recognizes that AEB false positives are a source of consumer complaints, but NHTSA does not believe AEB deactivation is the solution to the engineering challenges manufacturers with lower performing systems might face in meeting this rule’s requirements.
p. 92-95
In response to the NPRM, the IIHS, the Advocates, NTSB, AAA, Adasky, and Luminar, expressed support for the full collision avoidance (i.e., no-contact) requirement in all proposed AEB tests. IIHS stated that their evaluations of existing AEB systems indicated that some current systems are completely avoiding collisions at the highest speeds IIHS has tested, which is 70 km/h. Advocates stated that the vehicles are tested under nearly ideal conditions and, by requiring a no-contact condition for success, the benefits of the system will be stronger under less-than-ideal conditions in the real world. NTSB and AAA stated that the no-contact requirement is consistent with the need for safety, and potentially necessary to ensure test repeatability. Luminar stated that they were concerned that regulating some degree of contact in these scenarios presents significant concerns for test efficiency, integrity and cost related to compliance. Luminar stated that the no-contact performance is within the capability of existing technology. Several commenters, including the Alliance, Honda, FCA, Nissan, Volkswagen, SEMA, and MEMA stated that the proposed no-contact requirement in lead vehicle AEB tests is not practicable at the proposed test speeds. Many of these commenters suggested a hybrid approach of collision avoidance at lower speeds and speed reduction at higher speeds. Multiple commenters stated that the proposed test speeds will require earlier intervention by AEB systems to meet the “no-contact” requirement, which they state will cause various unintended consequences, such as false positives due to test speeds or AEB intervention at a time where evasive steering may still be possible. p. 101-
Many commenters stated that the expectation of no contact in the real world is not practical. The Alliance stated that while the research indicated that certain vehicles performed better under certain test conditions, the number of tests run, particularly at higher speeds, is insufficient to make any reliable determination as to the repeatability and reproducibility of testing and that the agency ran only one test per vehicle at each of the different speed ranges in each scenario. Many commenters also observed that no vehicle was found to have met all the proposed requirements ... Further, Honda stated that to meet the proposed higher speed no-contact requirements, current systems would be forced to provide braking intervention with significantly reduced recognition reliability and that current AEB systems would need to be completely redesigned. Bosch stated that its testing shows that when the speed reaches approximately 75 km/h, there are reproducibility challenges with multi-sensor fusion of the object in time to initiate AEB and avoid the obstruction, and considerations should be made on how these requirements align with current functional safety requirements. p. 102-
NHTSA does not expect that false activation would occur for well-designed systems. NHTSA recognizes that false activation could occur when an AEB system has low accuracy and reliability. As mentioned previously, we agree with Luminar and other commentors that no contact performance is within the capability of existing technology. For example, Honda asserted that an AEB system will likely intervene improperly when the road in front of a subject vehicle is curved to the left and there is a vehicle parked on the right side of the road that causes no risk of collision. If the subject vehicle is equipped with sufficient technology to detect the shape of the road ahead, the AEB system would not improperly activate based on the mere fact that a parked vehicle appeared in the middle of AEB’s field of view. There are manners in which an algorithm can assess the shape of the road. The system will also be continuously receiving more data as the vehicle gets closer. p. 109-
Another technical option is having redundant systems as suggested in the Alliance’s comment. Regardless of whatever technical solution manufacturers choose, NHTSA does not believe that it should lower performance to match that of poor performers. Rather, manufacturers with poorly performing vehicles should strive to resolve their systems’ deficiencies so that they can perform as well as the market’s better or best performing vehicles. Additionally, while this rule imposes performance requirements for AEB systems, it does not specify how manufacturers must meet the requirements. The agency is providing maximum flexibility to manufacturers in designing AEB system for their vehicles. NHTSA recognizes that different manufacturers have different economic and practical realities that face their businesses. NHTSA principal concern is with the safety outcome and not the path that a manufacturer chooses to take to get to the required outcome. Given the various technical options, selecting technology for their AEB systems and setting the level of accuracy and reliability are at the manufacturers’ discretion. At the same time, the manufacturers should be responsible for any safety-related defects in their vehicle products, in this case potential false positive activations. Therefore, we expect that vehicle and equipment manufacturers will mitigate and resolve any product defect issues including potential false activation in their AEB systems. NHTSA will continue to monitor complaints on AEB systems from the public, including those involving false activations, and will evaluate the risks they present. p. 110-

Matrices of the Psyche. Culture

In this (link) publication, we got acquainted with the structure of matrices, their basics. Today I offer a look at human culture as a matrix-driven phenomenon.
Culture is determined by established forms of behavior. Tools and specific actions, instruments for achieving specific results. These forms of behavior can be grouped into areas of activity depending on the desired results and goals. Below I propose to consider the spheres of activity distributed among matrices according to archetypes and strong functions of sociotypes.
https://preview.redd.it/ohqpufog4v1d1.png?width=1195&format=png&auto=webp&s=86655f152f3c37a99b0a00bd406c615ecbb57f7f
Art and religion are divided between humanitarians, sciences between researchers, areas of philosophy between intuitive types, management between rational sensorics, and in the Will matrices there are four branches of government.
Each culture, due to historical and geographical conditions, has formed its own values, traditions and forms of behavior that shape its mentality, strengths and weaknesses. As in the psyche of each individual person, in the collective unconscious of humanity, all 16 matrices are present, and my hypothesis is that cultures were not formed randomly. I believe that every culture is a manifestation of one of the matrices, if we consider humanity as a single organism.
When dividing cultures, I was guided by various views on this topic, including Huntington's clash of civilizations, Lewis's model of cultural dimensions, and others. I have identified several principles for myself. Globally - sensory (feeling) is more dominant in the North West, intuition in the South East, emotion (feeling) in the South West, thinking (logic) in the North East. At the intersection, groups of types are formed, for example, Pragmatists cultures were formed in the North (the intersection of thinking and sensors) most likely due to a colder climate, which required people to pragmatically, rationally allocate resources and rely more on calculations.
Here is a summary table with the distribution of cultures and activities between the matrices.
Images generated with DALL-E 3
In many cases, it is possible to explain why a culture has developed such a matrix in terms of its geographical and historical conditions. For example, the limited resources of the Japanese prompted them to control their effective use, which activated the Enchantress. Conversely, the resource-rich land of the Slavs awakened the Creator's creativity in them. Historical influence can be traced in the case of mestizos - the civilization itself arose as a union of two different cultures - Amerindians and Romans, and this dualism, flexibility, adaptability became the best basis for the manifestation of the Trickster.
Below I offer an approximate map of matrices through cultures. The administrative units of the states were marked by the prevailing culture, but representatives of each culture live in many regions of the planet in different proportions and are in constant movement.
Created with mapchart.net
There are a number of characteristics by which the main cultures of mankind can be distinguished, but language is the key among them, because language is the environment in which culture is born and exists. Exceptions are Africans, Amerindians and Mestizos of America, who, having adopted the language and religion of Europeans, retain their cultural identity.
Each of these cultures has a population destiny and influence that cannot be leveled and if my hypothesis is correct that each culture is a manifestation of one of the 16 matrices and humanity thus functions at an unconscious level as a single organism - the future of humanity will depend on the global integration of all parts on a conscious level.
I am waiting for your feedback and we will continue to consider the context in which the matrices appear in the next publications.

Self operating computer
Having every workflow application have the AI be able to use the tools rather than just give advice based on what it sees on the device and hears from the user.
Spoken Timelines: I didn't add links but you could just search what I said on Google.
Dan Schulman (former PayPal CEO): GPT-5 will be a freak out moment. 80% of the jobs out there will be reduced 80% in scope.
Sam Altman thinks GPT-4.5 will automate 100 million jobs globally.
In 2023, Sam Altman said he predicts job losses will begin in 2-3 years.
Sam Altman's AI Capabilities Projection:
AI that controls your computer is coming soon
Sam Altman said GPT 4 is really dumb. So he knows the next model is actually way better.
OpenAI is likely two years ahead of everyone.

Every company’s workflow would be reengineered by May 2026. Nvidia, Dell Are Building Their Own AI 'Factories' (Based on May 2024)
Project Stargate: Nuclear fusion to power the $100 billion data center to be released in 2028. This is likely for scaling for smarter models, make AI faster, cheaper, or getting it to as many hands as possible.
Many leaders in AI give AGI release dates between 2025-2030. Most people that think AI won't take jobs are thinking of todays tech for the future. They don't consider how AGI would be like for AI to take jobs. Like the required technology and how those innovations could be achieved. People don't consider how embodied humanoid robots with AGI could also eliminate many jobs. People think trade jobs are safe. NVIDIA's project groot is training robots in simulation. Who's to say that the robots can't learn to do all tasks. Maybe not in a year, but five years is a lot of progress with the rate AI is advancing. Even if we don't have AGI now, AI will be replacing jobs. If one person can use AI to do the work of one team, then those people who would have been on a team would be laid off. Especially when Agents roll around in 1-2 years.
Sometimes it really worries me about the people who go to college to get a high paying jobs, especially first gen college students from immigrant families. Imagine working hard for the dream of getting a high paying job only to be automated in six years. What happens to their drive? All their hard work for what? Sold a long gone dream and had the carpet pulled under them. In my opinion, even jobs like doctors could be automated if humanoid robots had embodied AGI. Sure it might not be wanted at first, but it has the potential too.
My Thoughts on AGI
AGI would just be the accumulation of all the different innovations needed to reach the requirements needed to meet the definition of what AGI is. Realistically, engineers could do this within six years. So even though I have a general idea of how AGI could be achieved by the end of the decade, I would just have to wait and see when these innovations are created.
Post Labor Info
Most people work to gain money because money is needed to survive and buy things that you want. The purpose of school is to provide people with a pathway to secure a high-paying job. When students say they work hard in school to be successful, it often means they want to get a high-paying career.
But if AI were to start taking over jobs, then our relationship with work would change. There would be mass unemployment, leading people to receive UBI. The government would be forced to give UBI unless they want societal collapse. No one would need to work to have money for survival and buying the things they want.
If everyone had free money, people would use the extra time on bettering their personal lives. They can spend more time with loved ones and do the things they want to do. There would be a paradigm shift in how society is set up. People wouldn’t have to work so hard at school or a job in the pursuit of money. A lot of people don’t like working anyway, especially since the cost of living is causing them to work harder and subsequently deal with mental health issues. Look at Gen Z doesn't want to work, antiwork, wage slavery, 9-5 rat race. Cost of living being unaffordable. People work so hard but can not get by. Hard work is not properly financially compensated and college grads can't find jobs. Meaning from work could be derived from work you want to do not work you do for a paycheck. Look at David Shapiro's YouTube channel for more info on Post-Labor and Post-AGI videos.
It would be better for the next generation of people born in this post-labor world. Nasa researchers found that 98% of 5-year-old children fell into the “genius category of imagination.” This number dropped to 12% for 15-year-olds and to 2% for adults. The reason for this drop is the education system killing creativity. But with the traditional education system gone, that generation is likely to remain geniuses.

2024.05.22 01:19 yettavr6 Any update on "new" Yale lock integration

Anyone have any idea when the updated Yale lock integration is supposed to go live? I'm currently using the old integration where it sends the guest a long winded message immediately after booking. The new integration is supposed to show the code along with instructions for using the lock right in the Airbnb app. This is currently available for Schlage locks, at least if you've signed up for Early Access, but Yale and August have just shown "Coming Soon" for months. Admittedly the old integration is working fine for us, except one time that it didn't, but the new integration seems much slicker based on the screenshots.
