I feel like the title is no longer valid. The change of contract doesn't necessarily stop me from attending therapy but the lack of cooperation on my therapist's side is almost forcing me to terminate... This doesn't come easy at all, and I can't even begin starting processing this.
Since my previous post, I've had two more therapy sessions. Here's a summary:

Since my previous post, I've had two more therapy sessions. Here's a summary:
- First Session:
- I expressed how the new contract doesn't fit my needs and work situation. I explained that the current contract works well for me and asked if there was any way to keep it or find a compromise. He stared at me for 10 minutes, then pressed me to admit I felt punished or that he was acting intentionally against me. I admitted feeling scared about losing therapy due to the new contract, to which he said it was entirely my choice.
- I used an analogy to explain my situation: "What if I said I could only come on Mondays and Wednesdays, but you said you couldn't accommodate that? If I replied, 'That's your choice, take it or leave it,' it wouldn't be fair." He didn't respond, and I reiterated that it wasn't 100% my choice and that I would choose the current contract if I could.
- He explained that the new contract is for the patient's benefit, arguing that consistent settings are crucial and that catch-up sessions were detrimental in the long run.
- He suggested I was taking the contract change personally and feeling rejected. I clarified that while I was disappointed, I didn't think he was acting personally against me. Despite my attempts to discuss our misaligned needs, he told me that I am intellectualizing.
- I kept trying to focus on the contract while considering his perspective. I emphasized the need for his input to find a solution but was told I was seeking him to "fix my emotions."
- Second Session:
- I asked if he had considered my proposal to keep the current contract, but he remained silent. I acknowledged understanding his need for structure and consistency in therapy, which I now see as somewhat standard for psychodynamic therapy. However, the new terms don't work for my job situation. He didn't address this.
- I revisited his point about my feelings of rejection and desire for him to "fix my emotions." I explained that my disappointment was about the situation, not him personally. I don’t see this decision as a reflection of his care for me. To which he said "You know, I simply don't agree with this.
- He extensively discussed how he found it concerning that my attachment to therapy had shifted from intense dependence to a more detached, intellectual negotiation. He suggested I was hiding my true feelings of rejection and hurt, questioning why I previously reacted strongly to his comments but now seemed unaffected.
- I considered his perspective, acknowledging I might be numb or scared, but it didn't resonate with me. I genuinely don’t hate him or think he's a bad person. I just hoped for more openness to finding a solution after four years of therapy.
- I said that on very practical level, I simply don’t want to pay for sessions that I’m not doing. And he said that it’s interesting that I am preoccupied with paying for sessions that I’m not going to get, but I’m not preoccupied about him not getting paid for sessions that I was missing. So, apparently those eight sessions that are allowed in the contract, those eight absences, that’s him not being paid and I should be preoccupied about that even though they're in the contract and they're allowed. 🤯
If you’ve read this far, do you have any advice or support for someone stuck in transference hell?

Hi! First and foremost, thanks for your interest and I apologize in advance for how long this is, I like to be thorough. I want to start this off with some important things regarding playing at my digital table. My games are all inclusive both OOC and IC, that means both the players and the inhabitants of the game world will be varied. There will be cultural and ethnic diversity, there will be people with physical disabilities, there will be LBGTQ+ characters, the game may very well (see: likely) explore mental health, gender identity, and any number of things. My games are a safe place and I take that promise very seriously. I cannot stress this enough; bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. There won’t be a warning, there won’t be a compromise, you’ll be out of the game, period. If you can’t manage this, then please save everyone some time and just don’t read further.
Now with that said, let’s discuss the beautiful game of D&D and this campaign and how I DM my games. My games are presented less as a static sequence of events and more of threads in the world that can be followed in any order. In a shorter campaign like this one there has to be a little more structure than a longer campaign, but this is not a railroad. Whatever ending we find to this campaign, we will find it together. Whether that’s the traditional fight the BBEG, talk them down, or join their side and plunge the world into chaos, it’s all on the table.
This campaign is set in the homebrew world that I have created and in truth I am using the campaign to explore individual parts of the world and hopefully expand upon the lore, add new NPCs, sure up any shortcomings, etc. Not because I’m publishing an adventure or anything, just because I really enjoy worldbuilding and having player choices affect the world going forward.
I like to incorporate backstories into the plot, I want everyone to have a chance to really feel a part of the story, not just along for the ride. This is also limited in a shorter campaign like this, but we can work together to give you something to identify with in this world. Whether it be directly connected to a figure in your backstory or just incorporating a theme or dynamic that resonates with your character, let’s find a way. If you give me something to work with, I promise I will find a way. This is a collaborative story, let’s create something hauntingly beautiful together.
There will be a session 0 to go over lines and veils, character creation, as well as just getting comfortable with one another. If there is a need for it to go over additional character creation, getting more acquainted with one another, or anything else we can also have a session 0.5. The point is that we are all comfortable when we begin play. Without any further ado, let’s finally get to the campaign details!

Players Needed: I already have some players, looking for 3-4 more.
Ratio: My games tend to lean more towards the RP heavy side of things though I do mix in combat. There are very few potential combat encounters that can't be solved in another way via talking, parlaying, or creativity. The amount of combat is dependent on the group as a whole. I would say in terms of planned potential combat that it will be a 60:40 or even 70:30 lean towards RP.
Scheduling: Bi-Weekly Wednesday 7pm-11pm CST, for 6-12 sessions. There is a chance this goes longer depending on RP, but I believe it will fit into 12 sessions. There’s no hard start date, just when we get the right players we will start scheduling, but it will be within a few weeks.
Software: Discord for voice, Foundry for VTT, D&D Beyond for character creation.
Our story, however, begins in the lands of Morroch, born after the splitting of the worlds by the World Serpent. It is said that Morroch was a point of direct impact of the World’s Serpent’s bite, leaving behind the most diverse array of biomes on Elysiia, much of it incorporated with serrated mountains and rolling hills. There is much to explore here including the northern region belonging primarily to the Stone Giants of Thulkna who call the Crimson Peaks – given their name because of the reddish color of the soil – home. Let us not forget the western seaboard of the Tilltona Coast, cliff-lined coasts with treacherous waters and frequent storms, home of the Storm Giants of the nation of Salleria.
For this story, we explore the Decayed Heights of the western region of Morroch. A brutal and unforgiving arid desert dominated by three powerful tribes: the Jeswye, renown for their connection to fire and abilities as blacksmiths and warriors; the Sandstriders, Lizardfolk who traverse the vast desert with ease, trading, and maintaining the fragile peace; and the Ironhoof Tribe, fierce warriors who thrive in the storm-battered coastal regions of the Decayed Heights.
Recently, the long-standing tension between the Jeswye and the Ironhoof has escalated to the brink of war, threatening the stability of the entire region and crucial trade routes that allow for safe passage through an otherwise inhospitable region. The campaign will begin in the floating bustling trade city of Vespera, located off the coast of the Decayed Heights. Here the characters have received a request from a representative of the Merchant’s Guild to meet to discuss a lucrative opportunity that is for the betterment of the world.
More world info and campaign info will be given before character creation and upon request (I will never turn down an opportunity to talk about lore and worldbuilding).

Character Creation:
- This campaign can work with players starting at level 3 or level 5. It will be decided by a group vote on which we start at. This allows for the characters to have some level of experience and renown but not be adventurers of legend (yet).
- All characters get a free feat. The caveat here is that if you pick a newer background that grants a feat, you don’t get an additional feat.
- Play the character you want, don’t worry about party composition. It’s my job as DM to worry about balancing the game, items, and encounters around party composition.
- Interparty conflict is fine and makes for good RP, deliberately obtuse characters designed for the sole purpose of being antagonistic to the party are not.
- All official content is allowed and most 3rd party content is as well. If you want to use some homebrew content, send it to me so I can review it to ensure it’s balanced.
- We roll for stats. 4d6kh3, drop the full set if under 72 unless you just want to keep them. Rolled in D&D Beyond. I trust my players to not lie about rolls or to try to re-roll 20 times for ideal stats. If I find that I can’t trust you to be honest then we just can’t play together.

- I work in tech so I like to try to do cool tech shit with my VTT.
- I’m a power nerd and love a bit of everything. Anime, comics, rp, tech, ttrpg (obviously), video games, writing, wrestling.
- For me D&D is a collaborative storytelling experience. I’m not out to murder your PCs or make things overly difficult for the sake of making you sweat.
- If I had to rate my skillset as a DM I’d say I’m very good at improv and storytelling but I don’t have a huge vocal range so I won’t be mesmerizing you with a unique voice for each NPC. I do what I can.
- These games are designed for me to experiment with technology, new in-game locales, cultures, etc. and as such some aspects are generated on the go or in the case of technology might experience some technical difficulties.
- Rule of cool. Yes the rules have a place, no we won’t be throwing them completely out. But if something is creative and feasible to at least attempt, yeah you can roll for it. If it’s not feasible I won’t even ask for a roll.

Lately I wanted to finaly play Pokemon Gold emulator on my phone, but to spice it up a little I wanted to make it a bit more difficult and interesting for myself, so I'm gonna try to make it into a modified Hardcore Randomizer Nuzlocke! Sadly, since I don't know how to actually randomize a game, I'm gonna try to achieve a similar outcome with cheats and a random number generator site.
I would like to ask for opinion and advice regarding stuff like if my rules are resonable for Pokemon Gold and won't go against the way progression, mechanics and locations are structured in this game, or if the way I want to handle item and trade evolutions sounds balanced.
So far the rules of the playthrough include:
I'm not sure if these levels are too high or too low, since the entire Johto region operates on low levels and I want to make use of these evolutions, but I don't want them to be broken :P
What do you all think about this set of rules? Does it sound reasonably hard but fun? Do you have any ideas for improvement? Would love some feedback!

- Basic nuzlocke rules.
- No use of items in trainer battles, but allowed in pokemon encounters.
- Level caps set to next gym leader's ace or the third elite four member's ace.
- The number of pokemon you can have in the gym is restricted to the number of pokemon the gym leader uses. The levels of your pokemon as you enter the gym should mirror the gym leader (e.g. you can only take 2 pokemon to Violet City gym, one at level 7, one at level 9). Pokemon are allowed to level up past the level cap in the gym itself.
- Pokemon encounters are chosen via numbers generated from 1 to 117, which correspond to a base form of every pokemon line excluding legendaries. The number is generated as soon as you have your first normal wild encounter in the location. Then you must encounter the randomized pokemon of the same level as the wild encounter. The pokemon encountered might be evolved if the level of the encounter allows for it. That includes trade evos, but not stone evos (but I'm not sure about that rule).
- When facing a static Legendary, generate 3 numbers and choose one of them, then proceed with the encounter against the randomized pokemon in place of the legendary.
- No fishing encounters in places, where no other way of encounter is possible.
- You can't leave a location until you finish it, after which you unlock it and can explore freely. To finish a location, you have to either:
- get to another entrance to the location that leads to a town or a place with a pokecenter (e.g. if you enter route 30 from Cherrygrove City, you would have to cross route 31 and get to Violet City to finish the location. After that you can enter and exit the routes to heal or buy items and reenter the routes 30 and 31).
- Beat the boss of the location or finish a story beat found there (e.g. to leave a gym you must fight the gym leader, or to leave the Sprout Tower you have to face sage Li).
- If the location has no story beats or doesn't lead to to another location (like early game Dark Cave) it's considered as unlocked you can exit and reenter it freely

WARLOCKS: For the Warlock super you cast a field around you that catches all projectiles shot at you and throws them back at the enemy that shot them. Basically just say "no u" to damage.
HUNTERS: You dead-on sprint through anything in your way. Doubles sprint speed at T3 mobility, but triples at T10. Downside: you can't stop running. Upside: anything you run into just sort of stops existing.

Strand could be entanglement, a connection that forms a bond between two objects that works (spookily?) at a distance. They are both connections. Also with darkness being based around knowledge, if we look at only one of two entangled particles and it is spinning up then we can know without looking at the other particle that it is spinning down. Look at the Strand Clones; they are copies of the hunter that created them that have been entangled by the hunter. When they dodge, they create an unstable version of themselves that will explode when an enemy comes near it, or just unravel peacefully after a certain amount of time. Strand is often associated with sewing, weaving, and fabrics. Throughout other pop-culture what is also described as being sewn, weaved, or (more commonly) made of fabric? That’s right; space time. I think that strand has something to do with other timelines; other threads of existence. Perhaps the hunter pulls a specter from some other timeline to use as a weapon. (I mean what haven’t Guardians turned into weapons at this point). Maybe when Warlocks weavewalk, they enter another timeline identical to ours with a tether being cast between the two to keep them connected (if you don’t like that make up your own reason for why they stay partially visible in our world).

At 100 stacks of "Slowed," however, the target freezes. Then, when damaged the target shatters, like in fission when we break atoms apart and release the energy. The target even shows this release of energy in Destiny because they glow bright then take damage. With fusion being the stronger of the two, it is certainly interesting that this season, Season of the Wish, the season before they drop the "theory of everything," Prismatic, Solar (fusion) is stronger than Stasis (fission). They might just (probably not) deliver this slap across the face in the Lightfall/Season of the Wish finale. Also on the less deep and more obvious side of things, they are both just fire and ice, I mean come on… that’s just cliche 101.

If you send a spaceship to the closest solar system (which is about 4 light years away) at the speed of light you will reach it in four years. Well, not really, there's also space dilation. Basically the faster you go towards something the smaller the distance between you and it. That's why a theoretical trip to another solar system at high speeds would have you decelerate after you reach the halfway point, so that you don't get farther from your destination. Satisfied sigh Oh, the complications of relativity, aren't they wonderful! Anyways back to what I was talking about: Arc transfers energy into motion and motion into energy. Thundercrash launches the Titan at high speeds until they hit something, releasing the energy as lightning, damaging the enemy. The Hunters' Arc staff deflects things by transferring their speed into energy and that energy into speed in a different direction. Warlocks use Chaos Reach to conjure stored energy and rapidly accelerate it in a beam of damaging energy. Titans' Fists of Havoc slam to the ground converting their falling momentum into damage like Thundercrash, and when they use their shoulder charge, they punch an enemy, changing their momentum into energy, and transfering that energy into a punch. Arc is energy transferal. Strain might be the opposite of energy transferal. Immovable objects, unstoppable forces, permanent momentum.
Ok ok ok... hear me out (also take these with 27 and a half grains of salt. I'm a Titan and brutality is a part of my culture.):
TITANS: For their super they get a force field tightly hugging their bodies for a short amount of time. The amount of damage they would have taken builds up and as they release this energy, they blast out in an explosion of damage that is completely unstoppable by any form of enemy with any kind of shield (it also stuns all champions). I'm talking Bubble popping power. If they take no damage, they get half of their super energy left and no explosion is caused. I call the Titans' super: UNBREAKABLE WILL
WARLOCKS: For the Warlock super you ground yourself completely and extend this unbreakable field of influence beyond allowing you to move (floating above the ground as always). ANY projectile or attack thrown at you is caught in this field and stopped until the super ends, when you unleash all of these projectiles back at the sender (if they aren't already dead). Melee attacks bounce back and damage whoever just hit you. I'm talking CATCHES Thundercrashes and turns that Titan towards any of their allies and LAUNCHES them. You are THE uno reverse card. I call the Warlocks' super: UNENDING VOLLEY
HUNTERS: You guys are the most mobile of the three classes, thus I have given you a roaming, movement-based super. You dead-on sprint through all that stands in your way. Doubles sprint speed at T3 mobility, but triples at T10 with all speeds between. Downside: you can't stop running. Upside: anything you run into just sort of stops existing. You are a living, breathing, and (most importantly) running .50 cal BMG round. Anything you can't kill in one hit you just run through allowing for another drive-by (through?) to be made. I call the Hunter's super: UNSTOPPABLE SPRINT
Now looking at Prismatic:
Prismatic is the sum of it all, it's the way that general relativity and quantum theory will eventually click into the perfect, symmetrical, equation. "The theory of everything," and "The Final Shape," kinda sound similar too. Just saying. ¯\_(-_-)_/¯
I don't have a lot on Prismatic.

I could talk about Blink working on both Void and Arc (which I will a little anyways >:D) Void works 'cause of the physics behind hawking radiation and arc working because of what happens at "absolute fast" which is similar to absolute hot but instead the motion is given direction and not just molecules bouncing around really fast. Absolute hot is the opposite of absolute zero by the way for those that don't know. I could talk about my theory on resonance. But I won't, because this comment is already WAY TOO LONG and talking about anything more is going to make my brain start holding my heart ransom, threatening a heart attack.

TL;DR for Strife/Strain supers:
TITANS: For their super they get a force field around them that absorbs damage and then explodes. The explosion stuns all 3 kinds of champions and only happens if damage is taken when shielding. Get half of super back if they take no damage.
WARLOCKS: For the Warlock super you cast a field around you that catches all projectiles shot at you and throws them back at the enemy that shot them. Basically just say "no u" to damage.
HUNTERS: You dead-on sprint through anything in your way. Doubles sprint speed at T3 mobility, but triples at T10. Downside: you can't stop running. Upside: anything you run into just sort of stops existing.
Okay, okay, I'm just going to ramble now. Take note that some terms/concepts here will feel weird and out-of-context without knowledge in these specific subjects.
Let's take a look at Void and Strand: Void could be gravity, a sort of connection that gets stronger as two objects get closer. Strand could be entanglement, a connection that forms a bond between two objects that works (spookily?) at a distance. They are both connections. Also with darkness being based around knowledge, if we look at only one of two entangled particles and it is spinning up then we can know without looking at the other particle that it is spinning down. Look at the Strand Clones; they are copies of the hunter that created them that have been entangled by the hunter. When they dodge, they create an unstable version of themselves that will explode when an enemy comes near it, or just unravel peacefully after a certain amount of time. Strand is often associated with sewing, weaving, and fabrics. Throughout other pop-culture what is also described as being sewn, weaved, or (more commonly) made of fabric? That’s right; space time. I think that strand has something to do with other timelines; other threads of existence. Perhaps the hunter pulls a specter from some other timeline to use as a weapon. (I mean what haven’t Guardians turned into weapons at this point). Maybe when Warlocks weavewalk, they enter another timeline identical to ours with a tether being cast between the two to keep them connected (if you don’t like that make up your own reason for why they stay partially visible in our world).
Alright now let's look at the easiest of the three groupings to talk about: Solar and Stasis. Solar is heat/fusion. Fusion happens in the sun and so it makes sense that solar is a subclass focusing on heat. Look at the buff "Radiant." It doesn't exactly have anything about it pertaining to fire, but I would certainly describe the sun as "Radiant." (this one's iffy but I thought I'd include it anyways). Now look at Stasis. I think that it HEAVILY relates to fission, which is (sort of but not really) the opposite of fusion. Let's look at the stasis debuff, "Slowed." This effect is the opposite of Solar's "Scorched" effect. At 100 stacks of Scorched, a target will ignite. Stars go through this same process at their birth, they slowly gather more and more mass, more and more heat, until eventually fusion happens, the star... ignites. At 100 stacks of "Slowed," however, the target freezes. Then, when damaged the target shatters, like in fission when we break atoms apart and release the energy. The target even shows this release of energy in Destiny because they glow bright then take damage. With fusion being the stronger of the two, it is certainly interesting that this season, Season of the Wish, the season before they drop the "theory of everything," Prismatic, Solar (fusion) is stronger than Stasis (fission). They might just (probably not) deliver this slap across the face in the Lightfall/Season of the Wish finale. Also on the less deep and more obvious side of things, they are both just fire and ice, I mean come on… that’s just cliche 101.
Okay moving on to Arc and Strain (my name for the 3rd Darkness subclass). This one is a bit more difficult. Arc is manifested as lightning. It's described as pertaining to motion and speed. It is "Arc-celeration." Time dilation happens when moving rapidly through space. Because space and time are the same force, the faster you move through space, the slower you move through time. This is very unintuitive, but the slower you move through time, the faster everything else moves through time (from your perspective). If you send a spaceship to the closest solar system (which is about 4 light years away) at the speed of light you will reach it in four years. Well, not really, there's also space dilation. Basically the faster you go towards something the smaller the distance between you and it. That's why a theoretical trip to another solar system at high speeds would have you decelerate after you reach the halfway point, so that you don't get farther from your destination. Satisfied sigh Oh, the complications of relativity, aren't they wonderful! Anyways back to what I was talking about: Arc transfers energy into motion and motion into energy. Thundercrash launches the Titan at high speeds until they hit something, releasing the energy as lightning, damaging the enemy. The Hunters' Arc staff deflects things by transferring their speed into energy and that energy into speed in a different direction. Warlocks use Chaos Reach to conjure stored energy and rapidly accelerate it in a beam of damaging energy. Titans' Fists of Havoc slam to the ground converting their falling momentum into damage like Thundercrash, and when they use their shoulder charge, they punch an enemy, changing their momentum into energy, and transfering that energy into a punch. Arc is energy transferal. Strain might be the opposite of energy transferal. Immovable objects, unstoppable forces, permanent momentum.
Ok ok ok... hear me out (also take these with 27 and a half grains of salt. I'm a Titan and brutality is a part of my culture.):
TITANS: For their super they get a force field tightly hugging their bodies for a short amount of time. The amount of damage they would have taken builds up and as they release this energy, they blast out in an explosion of damage that is completely unstoppable by any form of enemy with any kind of shield (it also stuns all champions). I'm talking Bubble popping power. If they take no damage, they get half of their super energy left and no explosion is caused. I call the Titans' super: UNBREAKABLE WILL
WARLOCKS: For the Warlock super you ground yourself completely and extend this unbreakable field of influence beyond allowing you to move (floating above the ground as always). ANY projectile or attack thrown at you is caught in this field and stopped until the super ends, when you unleash all of these projectiles back at the sender (if they aren't already dead). Melee attacks bounce back and damage whoever just hit you. I'm talking CATCHES Thundercrashes and turns that Titan towards any of their allies and LAUNCHES them. You are THE uno reverse card. I call the Warlocks' super: UNENDING VOLLEY
HUNTERS: You guys are the most mobile of the three classes, thus I have given you a roaming, movement-based super. You dead-on sprint through all that stands in your way. Doubles sprint speed at T3 mobility, but triples at T10 with all speeds between. Downside: you can't stop running. Upside: anything you run into just sort of stops existing. You are a living, breathing, and (most importantly) running .50 cal BMG round. Anything you can't kill in one hit you just run through allowing for another drive-by (through?) to be made. Hello! I made a couple of posts ago detailing some insights I had while reading about enneagram, and while I'm pretty sure that I have a lot of E1 traits, someone brought up that I may be a SO9, which can share some general traits with SP1. You can see my last post here, if you want to read the post where I provide some general background and things from my childhood.
But to put some context: I'm extremely self-critical and I tend to define myself by the things I do. If I stop doing, I lose my sense of self. I'm very hardworking and I place a lot of importance on being competent so I can more effectively help people around me with whatever they need. I need a sense of purpose, otherwise, I feel lost and I don't like that. I'm extremely independent and I feel uncomfortable receiving help from others, but I love giving and helping people. All of this, plus the description of E1 disintegrating into E4 under stress, led me to believe that I'm for sure an E1.
Before I run into the same comments: I don't relate to any aspects of E2 or E3 besides wanting to help people and being hardworking or career-focused. I don't see myself in either of their respective disintegration (I'm not domineering or demanding, at all, and neither do I cling to titles or achievements to prove my worth to someone), so I've discarded the heart triad for some time now.
Something happened a couple of weeks ago that made me think about how I behave during stress, and maybe this could help a bit knowing if I'm truly E1: I currently work from Monday to Friday and attend college on the weekends, leaving me pretty exhausted overall. I had an assignment to work on with a classmate, but some things happened at work that demanded I put in more time than usual and I couldn't have it ready as soon as my classmate wanted. They got really mad at me and said I was ungrateful for all the help he had given me before, and I just apologized and felt horrible about it. However, another part of me was resentful because my classmate is unemployed, and their income comes from some Airbnb his family manages, so they have a lot of free time to do whatever they want. They can get their homework ready as soon as possible, while I can't because I rely on my job to survive. I really wanted to say that to them, I felt like they weren't trying to be understanding towards my circumstances, but I felt like it was ultimately my fault for not managing my time properly, and I didn't have the right to say they had it "easier" than me.
Anyways, I felt horrible about that, I started avoiding them out of shame and I just kept thinking about how I ruined everything. It also didn't seem like they were convinced by my apology either. I still think they could have seen things from my side as well, but I don't know why a part of me insists that it's always my fault and I don't have the right to demand anything from anyone. I'm very averse to conflict and sometimes think a part of me is convinced that if I blame everything on myself, things get resolved quickly and nobody else has to feel bad about themselves. But then I feel this resentment that nobody tries to see things from my point of view, nobody tries to put themselves in my shoes, and I never can bring myself to ask someone to understand, maybe it's because I don't expect them to.
In real life, I dislike arguments and conflict. I do everything to make sure I never disappoint someone or let them down. I hate to be put in a spot where I have to pick sides because I want everyone to get along. I know it's obvious by now, but I have a lot of trouble asserting myself.
Previously, I typed myself SP1 because of the inner critic and holding myself to high standards. But there's a key part of E1 that I don't resonate with, and it's expecting perfection of others and demanding it as well. I feel extremely uncomfortable when I have to give criticism or evaluate someone at work, mostly because I'm afraid they'll get mad at me or that I may unintentionally start some drama. I hate drama. Especially because I know some people don't give a damn about apologies, no matter how sincere you are.
Another thing is that I have understood better the instinctual variants and while I do resonate with the description of self-preservation, I often neglect my physical needs in favor of doing whatever I need to do for either my family, my coworkers, or my classmates. I used to pull all-nighters just to have homework ready as soon as my classmate did so they wouldn't blame me of slacking off, even if that meant I'd doze off at work the next day.
Another thing that I didn't see much in E1 was the terrible sense of identity. As I was saying before, I define myself by the things I do. I don't know who I am without that. I know it shouldn't be like that, but I was never given space to develop my sense of self in my childhood, I'm in my late 20s now and I have lost hope I'll ever improve in that area. But this is something that I've seen more reflected in E9, the lack of inner self, the disconnection from one's psyche. Yes, I am perfectionistic and self-critical, but if someone took away all the things that make me feel like myself, I'd be lost and empty.
While I know that usually E2 and E7 can be self-indulgent, I didn't see it much in E1. Whenever I'm stressed, I distract myself with food or drinking. E1 can do it, but it seems like it's to release themselves from the burden of their own self-imposed standards, but I do it to forget about the stress and pressure for a while. I don't know what enneagram does that.
One last thing that makes me doubt, but not as much as the above, is that I'm ENFJ and I've seen a lot of people say that it's not compatible with E9, and that only introverted types can be E9. But SO9 does sound like an extrovert, so I'm confused here.

Beyond these basic concerns, the self-preservation instinct may place emphasis on other areas of security in terms of whatever that means for a person of a specific type (once it mixes with one of the nine passions).Then, I'd be definitely a social type, with a slight inclination towards self-preservation, SO/SP if I have to be sure. But then reading the description of SO1, I can't relate much. Sure, I make long posts on the internet about my opinions and I may get into an argument on Reddit or PDB, but I'm very meek in real life. My go-to strategy is to gain as much skill and knowledge as possible to help people solve their problems, but I don't have this cold attitude in which I think I'm better than them. I do believe that once I reach an answer, that must be the correct one and I can tell others that this is the right way to do it and save them some trouble with it, but if someone comes up with a different solution, I'll definitely consider that and not cling to something that may not work anymore.

Every form of visual media functions according to its own temporality. In the case of popular culture most of these temporalities are a matter of movements.
All forms of visual expression are marked by a form of movement particular to their medium. Manga, anime, and film each have their own “grammar” of movement. Lining up photographs of real people like frames in a manga, for example, would not produce the same effects as a manga. On the contrary, it would lack reality (riariti), and the only effect it could produce would be of kitsch. This is because the kind of movement specific to the photographic medium clashes with the manga form.
These techniques for expressing movement include everything from the macro-level of speed lines in manga. Used effectively, they produce the effect of realistic movement. Reality (riariti) in anime is produced not by naturalistic backgrounds or by imitating cinematic techniques but only by realizing the kind of movement that is unique to anime. Under these conditions even a character drawn with a single line can seem just as real or even more real than a person in a photograph or a film. Now let us consider the question of temporality in manga and anime while paying attention to how they express movement.
A comparison of the work of Ishinomori Shotaro and Nagai Go is useful in thinking about temporality in manga. Ishinomori and Nagai use very different methods for representing time. Simply put, one uses “cinematic time” and the other “gekiga time.”
As Kato Mikiro has also argued, Ishinomori’s work brought the representation of time in manga to an extremely sophisticated level. In Ishinomori’s work, time “flows,” as it were, at the mostly consistent speed. It is his well-known techniques for describing intervals in dialogue - for example, the kind of time produced by the contrast between the dialogue within speech bubbles and the handwritten dialogue outside the speech bubbles - that maintain the objectivity or intersubjectivity of time in Ishinomori’s works. It is a more chronological, measured time that flows straight and even, without slowing or faltering.
In Nagai’s work, on the other hand, time no longer flows. It contracts and expands along with the reader’s subjective viewpoint. Action-packed, high-impact moments are drawn with large frames and take up many pages. This way of representing time, hardly used by Ishinomori at all, has become the trademark of Japanese manga in general. Ishinomori’s Masked Rider (Kamen raidaa) and other works in the squadron genre have been more often adapted as live-action dramas than as anime. This is in stark contrast to Nagai’s works, which have almost always been adapted as anime. There are no doubt reasons internal to the industry for this, but that does not explain everything. It seems clear that Nagai’s work itself has a greater affinity for being adapted as anime. And one of the things that anime have adopted from manga is the kind of atemporality represented in Nagai’s work.
In an earlier essay I was critical of this sort of atemporality in the work of Miyazaki Hayao. Here, I would like to return to that earlier essay to reconsider the atemporality of manga and anime.
As Miyazaki himself points out, anime starts out as the stepchild of manga. Anime often borrow techniques directly from manga. The best known example of this is the use of so-called manpu (Takekuma Kentaro) but the atemporality of anime is also derived from manga. Miyazaki compares anime’s atemporality to a traditional Japanese form of storytelling known as kodan storytelling, in which time and space are grossly distorted and exaggerated according to the passion and expressivity of the characters. The kodan “Kan’ei sanbajutsu” (Horse riding in the Kan’ei era), for example, is a long and extremely detailed description of how Magaki Heikuro climbs up a stone staircase on a horse. This kind of unlimited extension of a single privileged moment is typical of the atemporality of kodan storytelling, and Miyazaki is extremely critical of it.
One sees this kind of temporality most often in gekiga comics like those of Kajiwara Ikki. The most extreme example is perhaps Nakajima Norihiro’s Astro kyu dan (Asutoro kyu dan), the climaz of which is a single baseball match between the Astros and the Victories, the description of which took three years in serialization and more than two thousand pages. Astro kyu dan was a groundbreaking work, but it was neither minor nor avant-garde. It was published in Shonen jampu (Jump), a leading manga magazine, and, with the exception of a few raised eyebrows here and there, readers had no trouble accepting it.
The media space of manga and anime clearly tends toward atemporality. Manga about sports inevitably favor these descriptive techniques. The time between the moment the ball leaves the pitcher’s hand to the time it is swallowed up in the catcher’s mitt, the moment when a long-distance runner speeds up just before the finish line, the time of a round of boxing: all of these extremely short periods of time are extended and rendered in elaborate detail. The impact of a particular scene is heightened in direct proportion to the time spend describing it and the density of the narrative. Such techniques have been used most effectively in manga and anime. There is nothing in films or even novels capable of rendering this sense of atemporality quite as naturally. This point may have to do with the particularity of “Japanese space” that I discuss later.
Of course, the imaginaire, the realm of the imagination and fantasy, is atemporal to begin with. Dead people, for example, do not age in this realm. This is very different however, from Sigmund Freud’s notion of the atemporality of the unconscious. The unconscious is atemporal by its very nature, while the Imaginary can accurately be said only to strive for atemporality. In the imagination there is often a striving toward unlimited experience, which leads to a frantic gathering together of privileged moments.
In an essay on schizophrenia, the psychiatrist Nakai Hisao writes about the distinction between chronological and kairological time. Chronological time, named after Chronos, the Greek god of time and the father of Zeus, refers to physical time that we can measure on the clock. Kairos, on the other hand, is the Greek word for “opportune moment” and refers to time as human beings actually experience it. When we feel as if a boring lecture will go on forever or the time spent with a lover is over in a millisecond, it is because we are experiencing the time of kairos. Nakai writers that at a certain point in the progress of schizophrenia, patients experience “the collapse of kairological time and the maintenance of chronological time.” If this is possible, then there is no reason to think that the opposite might not also happen. Chronological time might recede, and the individual might leap headfirst into kairological time. In borderline cases and hysterics, for example, kairological time is clearly dominant. The time experienced by these individuals is often marked by the “here and now” of narcissism.
There are several other ways in which anime and manga strive for atemporality, or the suppression of chronological time. Characters like Sazae-san and Doraemon never grow old, and their stories unfold cyclically, always in the same setting. The technique of the tournament form that anime borrowed from manga magazines like Shonen jampu is another example of an atemporal form, like an infinite musical scale. The way the ranks of the enemy grows infinitely stronger is nothing if not a technique for introducing cyclical atemporality even as it disguises the passage time. In anime there is also the issue of the voice actor. What does it mean that the voice actor seems ageless and immortal? Often we have no idea how old they are in reality, and they may play the same boy roles for years on end. They must be immortal as well: When Yamada Yasuo, who did the voice of Lupin, died, the role was taken over by a virtual vocal clone of Yamada’s named Kurita Kan’ichi.

American comics are fundamentally loyal to the techniques of cinema. In other words, they use chronological time in every respect. The flow of time from frame to frame is always even, and emotional prolongation and exaggeration is minimized. The characters’ subjective viewpoints are rendered through their monologues, and they do not demand readerly identification any more than necessary. In Japanese manga, on the other hand, particularly since kairological time was introduced by Tezuka, there has been a proliferation of techniques for rendering brief moments with high density and a very light touch. As these techniques were developed and further refined, they forced readers to identify with the characters even as they made it possible for them to read at a very fast pace. There is nothing else like this in the history of representational culture. It is very different from the way short time periods are presented in long novels such as the four days of the Brothers Karamazov or the single day of Joyce’s Ulysses. The high temporal density of these literary works derives from their indexical and polyphonic narrative structures. What they lack, moreover, is speed. The paradoxical combination of high-density and high-speed forms of expression is the unique quality of the media space of manga and anime.
The atemporality of manga derives from the screen effect whereby something looks as if it were stopped because it is moving so fast. Atemporality is not the only effect made possible by this copious description of instantaneous moments. I have pointed out that it also makes speed-reading possible. What does the copious description of instantaneous moments have to do with speed-reading? Here it would be useful to explain one of the most conspicuous codes that characterizes manga and anime.
Synchronic Space in Unison
Manga has its own very particular set of codes. As is well known, manga have multiple means for communicating these codes, both visual and verbal, as well as various supplemental onomatopoetic and mimetic expressions. Its methods of visual expression are far from simple. The background may be drawn in great detail, but the characters must be drawn using symbolic abbreviations. This is necessary to maintain visual continuity for the same characters from frame to frame. The characters’ emotions must also be expressed symbolically. This is the function of so-called manpu. Movement is expressed symbolically using various kinds of “speed lines.” I use the word “symbolic” here to indicate that these expressions directly transmit meanings as simple codes, leaving almost no room for multiple interpretations.
A frame from a manga chosen at random illustrates what I mean in greater detail. It is easy to see that multiple code systems coexist within even a single frame. We may begin by reading the text, but the shape of the bubbles that envelop the text are also expressive of emotions and situations. The manga as a whole consists of a very long list of codes, including the facial expressions of the characters, manpu, onomatopoetic and mimetic expressions, and speed and concentration lines. In manga it is almost impossible for a given mark, ln the paper not to carry any meaning. Answering that question alone would make for a fascinating history of representational culture. But for now let us leave that aside and move on.
Some readers may be wondering whether there is really anything unique here about manga and anime. Don’t film and theater have their own complex systems of codes? What is unique about manga and anime is not the layering of codes on top of one another, or even the number of codes in use. What is important is that in manga and anime these codes do not create a polyphonic effect. Instead, they work in unison.
What do I mean by this? Even though multiple layers of codes operate in a manga or an anime, they express the same meaning, or the same emotion. Multiple code systems are synchronized to convey the meaning of a single situation. The more precise and rhythmic this synchronization is, the more rapidly we end up reading them. Speed-reading is an effect of this unison of codes, but at the same time the codes are brought into greater synchronicity by being read quickly.
One more crucial factor is that each of these codes that we have been discussing is highly incomplete on its own. No single manga code can convey meaning by itself. The text of the images alone do not relay sufficient meaning to be read in isolation. This means that all of the code systems must supplement each other. It is only this mutual supplementation that makes possible the synchronization and the unisonic effect of the whole.
For this reason the space of manga functions a representational space that is both excessively overdetermined in meaning and highly redundant. A related phenomenon is the rapid spread of those unsightly so-called telops that have become so irritatingly common on television programs in recent years. The words of the performers on variety shows are repeated for emphasis using subtitles, to which are added (in all likelihood synthesized) recordings of the laughter of the crew. Here also, you have multiple codes working in unison to ensure that the viewer was no way to react but to laugh. Some have pointed to this as an example of television becoming like manga. But I am more interested in considering what it is about our culture that makes us so found of these redundant and exaggerated forms of expression.
According to Frederik Schodt, who has also written about Japanese manga, the Japanese preference for combining visual with verbal expression has its roots in the kibyoshi picture books of the Edo period. Schodt’s thesis will of course require careful study before we can be certain. But at the present moment it does seem to be the case that Japan is the only country in which the fundamental grammar of popular culture can be described as the copious expression of multiple codes in unison. It is not that there are no examples of this in other countries, but nowhere else has it attained the widespread popularity and sophistication that it has in Japan.
This distinctive medium, which becomes meaningless when the codes are separated out and excessively meaningful when they are synchronized, brings to mind something else as well. It is very similar to how the Japanese language itself uses phonetic kana along with Chinese characters. As the anime director Takahata Isao has argued, anime and the Japanese language stand in a very intimate relation to one another. Takahata’s point is the anime is the Japanese language. Of course, there have been claims like this before, such as the one that suggests that manga resemble Japanese calligraphy. Misconceptions about kanji, particularly the idea that they are ideographic, and fascination with the refined look of the characters led even Jacques Lacan into thoughtless remarked that “the Japanese cannot be psychoanalyzed.” [*12. Jacques Lacan, “Avis au lecteur Japonais,” in Le seminaire de Jacques Lacan, ed. J. A. Miller, vol. 11 (Paris: Editions du Seuil), 497-500.] If we accept the distinction between the Symbolic and the Imaginary, we have to recognize that this is wrong. If there is something unique about kanji, it is not that they are closer to symbols than to letter. It is entirely possible to be attached to the visual appearance of writing, to treat it like a fetish, whether it be kanji or alphabetic letters. For the same reason we should avoid facile conflations of the imaginary function of anime and manga with the symbolic one of the Japanese writing system.
My sense is that the uniqueness of the two-pronged kanji/kana writing system employed in Japanese has less to do with its visual qualities than with the fact that reading it is a highly context-dependent process. And it is this fact that helps regulate the emergence of symbolic effects into the Imaginary. What we can say at this point for sure is that neither a Chinese character nor a phonetic reading on its own is sufficient to denote meaning. And it goes without saying that it is only with the addition, in synchronic unison, of katakana and roman letters that the full meaning can be gleaned. It is probably not a coincidence that the code systems of anime and manga work in a similar way.
The ease with which we enter into the world of a manga and the extraordinary speed at which we are able to consume them suggest that we may “read” them in the same way that we read Japanese writing. If this is indeed the case, we might make a further hypothesis about the Japanese writing system. We cannot claim that Japanese writing somehow blurs the boundaries between the Imaginary and the Symbolic. We can argue, however, that it provides us with a sophisticated mechanism for processing imaginary objects using symbolic operational forms.
This hypothesis helps explain a number of stranger phenomena. The first of these is that drawing ability is not the most important factor in assessing Japanese manga artists and anime directors. In fact we are strangely forgiving of their technical skills in drawing. The ability to draw certainly doesn’t hurt, but it is merely an added value. There are any number of Japanese artists who are considered “greats” but whose drawing ability is inexpert when judged by the standards of the West. Even Otomo Katsuhiro, for example, is not valued in the West for his ability to draw. Instead, his international reputation rests on his ability to tell a good story. This tendency to downplay drawing ability is also reflected in the fact that almost all critical writing on manga and anime to date focuses exclusively on narrative and character analysis.
It seems likely that we Japanese inhabit a cultural sphere that has experienced a rather distinctive development of technologies for the symbolic processing of imaginary things. This hypothesis has implications that are not limited to the theory of manga and anime. But because those implications would take us far beyond the scope of this book, we leave them for later and return to the main argument, bearing this hypothesis in mind.
The Space of Multiple Personalities
It should be possible to further expand on and generalize from these notions of the multilayered codes in manga and anime and the way they function in unison. It should be possible, for example, to think of a character in a manga as a kind of code. In my understanding, manga works have a structure that resembles a patient with multiple personalities. The better the work, the more occasions it provides for the multiplication of these personalities. To put it differently, the more perfect the manga, the more completely it succeeds in integrating the totality of its character into a single mutually supplementing system of partly personified characters.
In clinical practice it is well known that the separate personalities of patients with multiple personality disorder are highly incomplete in themselves. It is not uncommon for these individual personalities to be simple types whose entire nature can be expressed with a single phrase. In this sense it might be more appropriate to refer to them not as “personalities” but as individual “specs” (functions). This sort of incompleteness applies to many manga works as well.
It should be clear that what I am opposing to this space of multiple personalities is Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion of polyphony. Here is Bakhtin on the space of polyphony:

Compared with the novel, the formal characteristics and the range of narratives and narrative perspectives in manga are much more tightly circumscribed. What manga have instead is a much greater diversity of styles than the novel. This is also typical of most subcultural forms. To put it in semiotic terms, manga are impoverished on the syntagmatic axis (i.e., the horizontal structure) but extremely rich on the paradigmatic axis (i.e., the vertical branch).
For this reason it is not possible for manga to convey narratives above a certain level of complexity. The personalities of characters in manga have to be simple enough to be understood at a glance. If many manga contain only characters that belong to identifiable types, this is because the characters have to be arranged according to a code in which each one of them carries a single meaning. But this is no reason to complain about the lack of complexity and depth in manga characterization. In manga, a single personality is often divided among multiple characters. In other words, an entire manga work in its entirety is the coordinated expression of a single personality - of, for example, the personality of the author.
If it seems like I am belittling manga and anime by making this argument, this is not my intention. But just to be sure, let me make my defense of them explicit. The characteristics of manga that I have described above are weaknesses in terms of their capacity for literary expression. But do we not live in a time when the authority of the literary has been considerably weakened and the exponents of so-called high culture are being banished to an ever-shrinking territory?
If the weaknesses of subcultural forms like manga fall under the category of what I have just described as the syntagmatic, their strength lies in their paradigmatic diversity. One example would be popular music, where a diversity of sounds and arrangements are applied to simple structures, making for virtually infinite repetition and renewal. These days, techniques like sampling and remixing are not limited to music. We can all remember quite clearly how refreshing and powerful we found the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion (Shin seiki Evangerion), which was produced almost entirely using these technical refinements. Subcultural forms will surely continue to seduce and bewitch us with their uncompromising superficiality. They may not be able to portray “complex personalities,” but they certainly do produce “fascinating types.” The beautiful fighting girl, of course, is none other than one of those types. That she can only survive in a subcultural habitat is due to the reasons given above.

The Atemporality of Manga and Anime
Every form of visual media functions according to its own temporality. In the case of popular culture most of these temporalities are a matter of movements.
All forms of visual expression are marked by a form of movement particular to their medium. Manga, anime, and film each have their own “grammar” of movement. Lining up photographs of real people like frames in a manga, for example, would not produce the same effects as a manga. On the contrary, it would lack reality (riariti), and the only effect it could produce would be of kitsch. This is because the kind of movement specific to the photographic medium clashes with the manga form.
These techniques for expressing movement include everything from the macro-level of speed lines in manga. Used effectively, they produce the effect of realistic movement. Reality (riariti) in anime is produced not by naturalistic backgrounds or by imitating cinematic techniques but only by realizing the kind of movement that is unique to anime. Under these conditions even a character drawn with a single line can seem just as real or even more real than a person in a photograph or a film. Now let us consider the question of temporality in manga and anime while paying attention to how they express movement.
A comparison of the work of Ishinomori Shotaro and Nagai Go is useful in thinking about temporality in manga. Ishinomori and Nagai use very different methods for representing time. Simply put, one uses “cinematic time” and the other “gekiga time.”
As Kato Mikiro has also argued, Ishinomori’s work brought the representation of time in manga to an extremely sophisticated level. His techniques were then adopted as a kind of grammar unique to manga and eventually rendered even more sophisticated in the hands of artists like Otomo Katsuhiro. One can certainly see the influence of film in these techniques (Ishinomori himself was also a great fan of Western films). Even more than someone like Tezuka Osamu, Ishinomori intended his manga to be like films. In contrast to this, Nagai’s techniques are more specific to manga, almost as if he were taking a position against cinema. Because this point is very closely related to the emergence of the beautiful fighting girls, let us look into it in greater detail.
In Ishinomori’s work, time “flows,” as it were, at the mostly consistent speed. It is his well-known techniques for describing intervals in dialogue - for example, the kind of time produced by the contrast between the dialogue within speech bubbles and the handwritten dialogue outside the speech bubbles - that maintain the objectivity or intersubjectivity of time in Ishinomori’s works. It is a more chronological, measured time that flows straight and even, without slowing or faltering.
In Nagai’s work, on the other hand, time no longer flows. It contracts and expands along with the reader’s subjective viewpoint. Action-packed, high-impact moments are drawn with large frames and take up many pages. This way of representing time, hardly used by Ishinomori at all, has become the trademark of Japanese manga in general. Ishinomori’s Masked Rider (Kamen raidaa) and other works in the squadron genre have been more often adapted as live-action dramas than as anime. This is in stark contrast to Nagai’s works, which have almost always been adapted as anime. There are no doubt reasons internal to the industry for this, but that does not explain everything. It seems clear that Nagai’s work itself has a greater affinity for being adapted as anime. And one of the things that anime have adopted from manga is the kind of atemporality represented in Nagai’s work.
In an earlier essay I was critical of this sort of atemporality in the work of Miyazaki Hayao. Here, I would like to return to that earlier essay to reconsider the atemporality of manga and anime.
As Miyazaki himself points out, anime starts out as the stepchild of manga. Anime often borrow techniques directly from manga. The best known example of this is the use of so-called manpu (Takekuma Kentaro) but the atemporality of anime is also derived from manga. Miyazaki compares anime’s atemporality to a traditional Japanese form of storytelling known as kodan storytelling, in which time and space are grossly distorted and exaggerated according to the passion and expressivity of the characters. The kodan “Kan’ei sanbajutsu” (Horse riding in the Kan’ei era), for example, is a long and extremely detailed description of how Magaki Heikuro climbs up a stone staircase on a horse. This kind of unlimited extension of a single privileged moment is typical of the atemporality of kodan storytelling, and Miyazaki is extremely critical of it.
One sees this kind of temporality most often in gekiga comics like those of Kajiwara Ikki. The most extreme example is perhaps Nakajima Norihiro’s Astro kyu dan (Asutoro kyu dan), the climaz of which is a single baseball match between the Astros and the Victories, the description of which took three years in serialization and more than two thousand pages. Astro kyu dan was a groundbreaking work, but it was neither minor nor avant-garde. It was published in Shonen jampu (Jump), a leading manga magazine, and, with the exception of a few raised eyebrows here and there, readers had no trouble accepting it.
The media space of manga and anime clearly tends toward atemporality. Manga about sports inevitably favor these descriptive techniques. The time between the moment the ball leaves the pitcher’s hand to the time it is swallowed up in the catcher’s mitt, the moment when a long-distance runner speeds up just before the finish line, the time of a round of boxing: all of these extremely short periods of time are extended and rendered in elaborate detail. The impact of a particular scene is heightened in direct proportion to the time spend describing it and the density of the narrative. Such techniques have been used most effectively in manga and anime. There is nothing in films or even novels capable of rendering this sense of atemporality quite as naturally. This point may have to do with the particularity of “Japanese space” that I discuss later.
Of course, the imaginaire, the realm of the imagination and fantasy, is atemporal to begin with. Dead people, for example, do not age in this realm. This is very different however, from Sigmund Freud’s notion of the atemporality of the unconscious. The unconscious is atemporal by its very nature, while the Imaginary can accurately be said only to strive for atemporality. In the imagination there is often a striving toward unlimited experience, which leads to a frantic gathering together of privileged moments.
In an essay on schizophrenia, the psychiatrist Nakai Hisao writes about the distinction between chronological and kairological time. Chronological time, named after Chronos, the Greek god of time and the father of Zeus, refers to physical time that we can measure on the clock. Kairos, on the other hand, is the Greek word for “opportune moment” and refers to time as human beings actually experience it. When we feel as if a boring lecture will go on forever or the time spent with a lover is over in a millisecond, it is because we are experiencing the time of kairos. Nakai writers that at a certain point in the progress of schizophrenia, patients experience “the collapse of kairological time and the maintenance of chronological time.” If this is possible, then there is no reason to think that the opposite might not also happen. Chronological time might recede, and the individual might leap headfirst into kairological time. In borderline cases and hysterics, for example, kairological time is clearly dominant. The time experienced by these individuals is often marked by the “here and now” of narcissism.

The atemporality of manga derives from the screen effect whereby something looks as if it were stopped because it is moving so fast. Atemporality is not the only effect made possible by this copious description of instantaneous moments. I have pointed out that it also makes speed-reading possible. What does the copious description of instantaneous moments have to do with speed-reading? Here it would be useful to explain one of the most conspicuous codes that characterizes manga and anime.
Synchronic Space in Unison
Manga has its own very particular set of codes. As is well known, manga have multiple means for communicating these codes, both visual and verbal, as well as various supplemental onomatopoetic and mimetic expressions. Its methods of visual expression are far from simple. The background may be drawn in great detail, but the characters must be drawn using symbolic abbreviations. This is necessary to maintain visual continuity for the same characters from frame to frame. The characters’ emotions must also be expressed symbolically. This is the function of so-called manpu. Movement is expressed symbolically using various kinds of “speed lines.” I use the word “symbolic” here to indicate that these expressions directly transmit meanings as simple codes, leaving almost no room for multiple interpretations.
A frame from a manga chosen at random illustrates what I mean in greater detail. It is easy to see that multiple code systems coexist within even a single frame. We may begin by reading the text, but the shape of the bubbles that envelop the text are also expressive of emotions and situations. The manga as a whole consists of a very long list of codes, including the facial expressions of the characters, manpu, onomatopoetic and mimetic expressions, and speed and concentration lines. In manga it is almost impossible for a given mark, ln the paper not to carry any meaning. The brush or pencil strokes and the panel layout, as well as the empty spaces and the abbreviations, all contribute in some way or another to the meaning. When we stop and think about it, it is quite surprising that we have read such huge quantities of manga without ever being conscious of all of these codes . How is it that a system of codes of this complexity has come to be shared as a common grammar so unconsciously - and accurately? Answering that question alone would make for a fascinating history of representational culture. But for now let us leave that aside and move on.
Some readers may be wondering whether there is really anything unique here about manga and anime. Don’t film and theater have their own complex systems of codes? What is unique about manga and anime is not the layering of codes on top of one another, or even the number of codes in use. What is important is that in manga and anime these codes do not create a polyphonic effect. Instead, they work in unison.
What do I mean by this? Even though multiple layers of codes operate in a manga or an anime, they express the same meaning, or the same emotion. Multiple code systems are synchronized to convey the meaning of a single situation. The more precise and rhythmic this synchronization is, the more rapidly we end up reading them. Speed-reading is an effect of this unison of codes, but at the same time the codes are brought into greater synchronicity by being read quickly.
One more crucial factor is that each of these codes that we have been discussing is highly incomplete on its own. No single manga code can convey meaning by itself. The text of the images alone do not relay sufficient meaning to be read in isolation. This means that all of the code systems must supplement each other. It is only this mutual supplementation that makes possible the synchronization and the unisonic effect of the whole.
For this reason the space of manga functions a representational space that is both excessively overdetermined in meaning and highly redundant. A related phenomenon is the rapid spread of those unsightly so-called telops that have become so irritatingly common on television programs in recent years. The words of the performers on variety shows are repeated for emphasis using subtitles, to which are added (in all likelihood synthesized) recordings of the laughter of the crew. Here also, you have multiple codes working in unison to ensure that the viewer was no way to react but to laugh. Some have pointed to this as an example of television becoming like manga. But I am more interested in considering what it is about our culture that makes us so found of these redundant and exaggerated forms of expression.
According to Frederik Schodt, who has also written about Japanese manga, the Japanese preference for combining visual with verbal expression has its roots in the kibyoshi picture books of the Edo period. Schodt’s thesis will of course require careful study before we can be certain. But at the present moment it does seem to be the case that Japan is the only country in which the fundamental grammar of popular culture can be described as the copious expression of multiple codes in unison. It is not that there are no examples of this in other countries, but nowhere else has it attained the widespread popularity and sophistication that it has in Japan.
This distinctive medium, which becomes meaningless when the codes are separated out and excessively meaningful when they are synchronized, brings to mind something else as well. It is very similar to how the Japanese language itself uses phonetic kana along with Chinese characters. As the anime director Takahata Isao has argued, anime and the Japanese language stand in a very intimate relation to one another. Takahata’s point is the anime is the Japanese language. Of course, there have been claims like this before, such as the one that suggests that manga resemble Japanese calligraphy. Misconceptions about kanji, particularly the idea that they are ideographic, and fascination with the refined look of the characters led even Jacques Lacan into thoughtless remarked that “the Japanese cannot be psychoanalyzed.”
My sense is that the uniqueness of the two-pronged kanji/kana writing system employed in Japanese has less to do with its visual qualities than with the fact that reading it is a highly context-dependent process
The ease with which we enter into the world of a manga and the extraordinary speed at which we are able to consume them suggest that we may “read” them in the same way that we read Japanese writing. If this is indeed the case, we might make a further hypothesis about the Japanese writing system. We cannot claim that Japanese writing somehow blurs the boundaries between the Imaginary and the Symbolic. We can argue, however, that it provides us with a sophisticated mechanism for processing imaginary objects using symbolic operational forms.
This hypothesis helps explain a number of stranger phenomena. The first of these is that drawing ability is not the most important factor in assessing Japanese manga artists and anime directors. In fact we are strangely forgiving of their technical skills in drawing. The ability to draw certainly doesn’t hurt, but it is merely an added value. There are any number of Japanese artists who are considered “greats” but whose drawing ability is inexpert when judged by the standards of the West. Even Otomo Katsuhiro, for example, is not valued in the West for his ability to draw. Instead, his international reputation rests on his ability to tell a good story. This tendency to downplay drawing ability is also reflected in the fact that almost all critical writing on manga and anime to date focuses exclusively on narrative and character analysis.
It seems likely that we Japanese inhabit a cultural sphere that has experienced a rather distinctive development of technologies for the symbolic processing of imaginary things. This hypothesis has implications that are not limited to the theory of manga and anime. But because those implications would take us far beyond the scope of this book, we leave them for later and return to the main argument, bearing this hypothesis in mind.
The Space of Multiple Personalities
It should be possible to further expand on and generalize from these notions of the multilayered codes in manga and anime and the way they function in unison. It should be possible, for example, to think of a character in a manga as a kind of code. In my understanding, manga works have a structure that resembles a patient with multiple personalities. The better the work, the more occasions it provides for the multiplication of these personalities. To put it differently, the more perfect the manga, the more completely it succeeds in integrating the totality of its character into a single mutually supplementing system of partly personified characters.
In clinical practice it is well known that the separate personalities of patients with multiple personality disorder are highly incomplete in themselves. It is not uncommon for these individual personalities to be simple types whose entire nature can be expressed with a single phrase. In this sense it might be more appropriate to refer to them not as “personalities” but as individual “specs” (functions). This sort of incompleteness applies to many manga works as well.
It should be clear that what I am opposing to this space of multiple personalities is Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion of polyphony. Here is Bakhtin on the space of polyphony:
- A plurality of independent and unmerged voices and consciousnesses, a genuine polyphony of fully valid voices is in fact the chief characteristic of Dostoevsky’s novels….a plurality of consciousnesses, with equal rights and each with its own world, combine but are not merged in the unity of the event…not only objects of authorial discourse but also subjects of their own directly signifying discourse…. The consciousness of a character is given as someone else’s consciousness, another consciousness, yet at the same time it is not turned into an object, is not closed, does not become a simple object of the author’s consciousness. In this sense the image of a character in Dostoevsky is not the usual objectified image of a hero in the traditional novel….He created a fundamentally new novelistic genre.
The space of manga and anime has virtually nothing to do with these characteristics. In fact that space is more like an even more extreme version of what Bakhtin describes as having come before Dostoevsky. In other words, manga and anime give us “a multitude of characters and fates in a single objective world, illuminated by a single authorial consciousness,” in which “a character’s discourse [can] be exhausted by the usual pragmatic functions of characterization and plot development” and made to “serve as a vehicle for the author’s own ideological position.”
It is a fact that is often misunderstood, but like many other subcultural productions, the degree of freedom of expression in manga genre is extremely low. Compared with the novel, the formal characteristics and the range of narratives and narrative perspectives in manga are much more tightly circumscribed. What manga have instead is a much greater diversity of styles than the novel. This is also typical of most subcultural forms. To put it in semiotic terms, manga are impoverished on the syntagmatic axis (i.e., the horizontal structure) but extremely rich on the paradigmatic axis (i.e., the vertical branch).
For this reason it is not possible for manga to convey narratives above a certain level of complexity. The personalities of characters in manga have to be simple enough to be understood at a glance. Strategies you can use to fight back against gangstalking
1) Direct Confrontation: You could literally confront them and ask them why they are gangstalking you. That would be the direct confrontation route. They will feign ignorance and pretend they've never heard of gangstalking and try to make you sound and feel crazy. You can reaffirm by letting them know that you know gangstalking is real, and that you'd like for them to leave you alone. Let them know that you can put a restraining order on them if they keep following you around.
2) Indirect Confrontation: You could indirectly confront them, maybe be friendly and introduce yourself and ask directions or something. Try and glean some more details from them that way. Tell them, "You look real familiar to me. I feel like I've seen you somewhere else? Were you at XYZ last Friday? And maybe ABC a couple of weeks ago? It's a weird coincidence. I keep seeing you around". Try to make them uncomfortable by mentioning multiple places you've seen them at. See if they start sweating or show any signs of being nervous. If they start tugging at their ear or nose or look away while answering you, you can be sure they are lying.
3) Intimidation: You could also start staring them down to intimidate them. That's basically what I did to get my gangstalking to stop a LONG time ago. There was this super tall CIA Agent looking guy at the grocery store, and I knew he was following me. So I stared him down, and he got real nervous and smiled and grabbed a bundle of bananas real quick and ran off. Maybe having big scary looking pitbulls or rotwilers with you at all times while walking outside could help with intimidation. Or you could literally start open carrying a firearm around on your belt.
4) Ignore / They Don't Exist: You can also completely ignore them and pretend they don't exist and not let their presence bother you.
5) Kill With Kindness: Or you can kill them with kindness by smiling and waving at them and being friendly whenever you see them. Keep in mind that frequency weapons are being used on gangstalkers to remove their empathy, though. This was confirmed by the whistleblower named Bryan Kofron. So any methods intended to appeal to the gangstalker's humanity and empathy will likely be ineffective. However, never underestimate the powers of charisma and human decency. Most gangstalkers were forced into that profession by being victimized and gangstalked themselves to begin with.
Basically, you don't want to let them intimidate you or get you to change your life in any negative way. One goal of the targeted individual program is to essentially make you a prisoner in your own house and in your own mind. That's part of why I've started going for walks at the park almost every day lately. They don't want you to have a healthy social life or to have any social support structure whatsoever. The end goal is basically to get you in the crazy house. The whole program is designed to drive you insane and make you LOOK insane to your friends and family. Really, the only people you can talk about this openly with are those of us who know this is real already. The police and FBI are in on it. They absolutely will not help you whatsoever. They will gaslight you and pretend they have never even heard of gangstalking. That's because they are in on it.
Researching and discussing conspiracies like 9/11 was what got me put on the targeted individual list. I posted my theory of 9/11 on Abovetopsecret back in 2010. Someone on the forum threatened me and my whole family in a cryptic way to try and silence me. I didn't sleep for a whole week pretty much. Then, around 5am one morning while walking my dog, an FBI looking black Lincoln Town car drove by me. While it drove by, it rolled down the back window that was facing me. There was nobody in the backseat, but the message was well received. One night not too long after that, the walls of my bedroom started vibrating and buzzing for no apparent reason. My girlfriend at the time was absolutely frightened and asked me what that was. I just told her I didn't know since I really had no idea at the time. But now I realize that was the radio frequency mind control weapons being broadcast at us.
By the way, my relationship of 4 years ended shortly after that. I now realize that my girlfriend had been turned against me with frequency weapons. She started acting strange and in sort of a subliminal manner she would be mean to me for no reason. When she moved out, she was absolutely devastated and she seemed desperate to get back together but her pride prevented her from saying anything about it. When she broke up with me, it was like I was talking to a completely different person. She crossed her arms and told me not to touch her ever again. It felt like she was an actor in a movie or something. Like I mentioned with gangstalkers, her empathy was completely removed and she wasn't the same person anymore.
To this day I'm still single almost 14 years later. I had started to suspect that the perpetrators were finding out which women I was pursuing and were bombarding them with negative thoughts about me via electromagnetic radio frequency based mind control weapons. One lady who I know online confirmed this to me. She told me that one time she went to sit down at her computer specifically to talk with me. As soon as she sat down, she said she heard a loud ringing frequency tone in her ear, and she got very irritated and had the sudden impulse to stand back up and not talk to me. She said another time she heard nothing BUT the ringing in her ears, all other sounds stopped registering. And now it has been six months since she mysteriously stopped talking to me altogether. We never fought. We never had an argument or disagreement. She was straight up turned against me.
Frequency weapons aren't just used to broadcast false thoughts and manipulate people's emotions against you. They are also used for remote electroshock torture in order to make a person associate being around you with pain. I frequently receive sharp electrical shocking sensations in sensitive parts of my body such as my head, throat, fingers, toes, groin, stomach, etc. This isn't just done to us however. This is also done to our friends, family, and any potential dating opportunities. Many times in recent months I've had women I'm pursuing suddenly start experiencing sharp stomach cramping and other pains out of nowhere. One lady who was a waitress even openly stated that she thought it had to do with me, and mentioned how it was slow at the restaurant on the two Fridays I had been there. This is very real, despite what the online gangstalkers will try to say in the comments on this post.
Oh, and people are also being turned against each other within their dreams. I've witnessed it first hand by observing my own dreams. A woman who I was interested in was depicted negatively in a dream which had nothing to do with her otherwise. But she wronged me in my dream, which had an emotional effect on me which got committed to long term memory. And I woke up suddenly holding a grudge against her for no apparent reason. So if you've ever had a person turned against you out of nowhere for seemingly no reason, this is very often the reason.
Ultimately the Illuminati is trying to play God with gangstalking and radio frequency mind control weapons. They are trying to play our lives like Mario kart, and they want to steer us off course. So it's very necessary to become as knowledgeable as possible about yourself so that you know what your true thoughts are and what are falsely implanted thoughts. Also you want to learn to reprogram your own subconscious mind by telling it positive affirmations about yourself, your life, your goals, and what you hope to achieve. Someone on here suggested you can also program yourself to block out the influence of the frequency weapons by repeatedly stating, "I am blocking out all frequencies outside of the normal human hearing range". This is something I've been trying lately. Grounding is also important. Go outside daily and walk barefoot on grass for 15 to 20 minutes to discharge the built up artificial frequencies and reset your body to be synced up with Earth's harmonic resonance frequency of 7.83 hertz. Tree hugging also is effective in this regard. Sitting with your back against a tree and reading a book is a good idea too.

Tell them, "You look real familiar to me. I feel like I've seen you somewhere else? Were you at XYZ last Friday? And maybe ABC a couple of weeks ago? It's a weird coincidence. I keep seeing you around". Try to make them uncomfortable by mentioning multiple places you've seen them at. See if they start sweating or show any signs of being nervous. If they start tugging at their ear or nose or look away while answering you, you can be sure they are lying.
3) Intimidation: You could also start staring them down to intimidate them. That's basically what I did to get my gangstalking to stop a LONG time ago. There was this super tall CIA Agent looking guy at the grocery store, and I knew he was following me. This is something I've been trying lately. Grounding is also important. Go outside daily and walk barefoot on grass for 15 to 20 minutes to discharge the built up artificial frequencies and reset your body to be synced up with Earth's harmonic resonance frequency of 7.83 hertz. Tree hugging also is effective in this regard. Sitting with your back against a tree and reading a book is a good idea too.
Detoxing heavy metals can also be useful with supplements like chlorella, cilantro, moringa, liquid bentonite, etc. Potassium iodide capsules may help with removing the skin fungus associated with morgellons. Hot baths with Epsom salt, borax and bentonite may also help with thus. Lately I've been taking a supplement called Opaline Dry Oxy in order to help with my breathing, as my diaphragm and lungs have been under heavy attack. I found information which stated that this supplement was especially helpful for morgellons sufferers and was effective in oxygenating the body and raising the blood oxygen levels. So far I would say it is indeed helping.
