Lucifer vs. Mary, Chapter 4:the Girl from Bethlehem (+Intermission)

2024.05.21 20:00 Ambitious-Desk-60 Lucifer vs. Mary, Chapter 4:the Girl from Bethlehem (+Intermission)

“It was a special day, during the year 0, in the Roman occupied lands of Palestine, as I was with a very important task”
Gabriel started to narrate her story, reminiscing those days she mentioned.
““_Give this message, to a girl named Mary, in Bethlehem:You will bear the Son of God, and He shall be God in form of man_” as Lord YHWH ordered me, and as I walked down the streets, I began to hear a voice, of a rather young girl, going person to person, asking for something, before she came up to me, and asked me:”_Miss, do you perhaps know of a man looking for a bride? I am looking for a man to marry_”, and when I asked of her name, she was the one and only Mary, so I was taken aback, given how young she was, but I had to send her off, as I was not prepared for this”
Gabriel kept going, not taking her gaze off from Mary.
“I met her some time later at a well, and I asked her for how long she has been asking for a husband, and she’s been searching for 3 days, and this was the 4th, and had begun to lose hope in finding a man, despite praying each night. I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel bad, so that night, now that I was sure that was the Mary Lord YHWH appointed me, I entered her mind in her sleep, and gave the this message in her dreams:”_Mary of Bethlehem, for 4 days you’ve prayed to find a man, and tomorrow, you will, as you will be the mother of The Savior, Jesus Christ. Tomorrow, you will find your man before sundown_” and the next morning, she gave those incredible news to her parents, who were very joyous and honored that Lord YHWH heard their pleas”
Gabriel had a huge smile on her face, Göll also smiling from the story.
“What happened after? She met her husband Joseph right?”
Gabriel immediately answers Göll’s question.
“Yep, she did, in the same well she met me, as he heard of her wish, and decided that if no one else was going to marry her, he will, Mary was very happy to hear that, and decided to spend the rest of the day until sundown to be with him, as they then both began to learn more of each other, Joseph revealing he is a carpenter, which coincidentally had helped Mary’s parents, but that day, when Joseph and Mary went to her house, they found the entire house had been ransacked, the parents unharmed, and both thanked our Lord for the safety of Mary, who then gave her the news that the Roman Emperor had found out about the existence of hidden Christians, and sent soldiers to eradicate them, before Joseph stepped up, promising to protect Mary if her father gave him her hand, which they happily did”
As Gabriel was talking and Göll was listening, Brunhilde was still focused on analyzing any trick that Mary was using against Lucifer.
“And so, Mary and Joseph embarked on a long travel, where they met with a caravan heading to Nazareth, where under the guise of rags and wrinkles, I decided to join in, to keep an eye from Mary, before I once again entered her dreams, announcing that the birth of Jesus will be a virgin one, and that she must say this to everyone to avoid confusion, but as the caravan traveled, Mary had began to suffer the symptoms of pregnancy, Joseph taking extra care for her, before they were stopped not too far from Nazareth due to a storm, before Mary decided that they were close enough where she and Joseph could make it there by themselves, and once the storm settled, she and Joseph thanked the caravan, and made it to the city of Nazareth, meeting a group of farmers before Mary began to go into labour, the farmers helping Joseph hurry Mary into their staple, lying her carefully on a pile of cloth and straw, and as Mary started to give birth, a bright star shined above, when Lord YHWH sent the 3 other Archangels to tell 3 kings to follow the star, and give their gifts to the son, as he shall bring salvation from sins”
Göll was amazed at the story, before Gabriel kept on going for the final snippet.
“And thus, began the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, which Mary and Joseph, together, helped raise, and bore witness to his various parables and miracles, and both sadly wept at the time of his crucifixion and his rebirth, but even after he was gone, Mary kept on spreading the word of God, redeeming sinners and aiding with local issues, and one day, years after the death of Jesus. I was allowed to show myself in my full glory, for I had one last task for Mary:helping her ascend to the kingdom of Heaven before her death, a feat yet not done by neither man nor woman today, and as she ascended, Lord YHWH gave her among the biggest honors a human could ever have:the titles of Holiest saint, greatest woman, and the one most important title, the one of the Queen of Heaven:_Regina Caeli_”
As soon as Gabriel finished narrating, Brunhilde was still puzzled.
“Queen of Heaven? So she’s a much bigger deal than I thought”
Göll said, amazed at Gabriel’s story of Mary, Gabriel looking at the fight.
“Yeah, but I’m confident she’ll net humanity a well needed win”
{Intermission:Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit}
[these intermissions are meant to be like extra chapters with either interaction with audience members, or are the introduction of them]
As Mary was walking to the arena doors, she was greeted by a familiar voice and footsteps nearby.
“May God be with you, my dear”
And as Mary turns around, she can see her dear husband Joseph, accompanied by Jesus and his 6 other siblings:James, Joses, Simon, Jude, Judith and Miriam.
“Joseph? My kids, what are you doing here?”
Mary asked them, resting her thurible around her neck and waist as Joseph went to hug her, alongside the rest of the family.
“Just wanted to see you one last time before we went back to the audience seats, dear Mother”
Jude told Mary, as she embraces the hug”
“Thank you my son, worry not about the fight, I’m sure our Lord won’t let me die against his greatest oppressor, for I am his Holiest Saint”
Mary smiled, before she saw Gabriel approach them, her family also noticing her.
“Been some time, Mary of Bethlehem”
Mary was about to bow, but Gabriel stopped her.
“I was just passing by, I was headed to the medbay to help our Raphael, but I am glad to see you safe, although I never would’ve thought you’d step up instead of Joan” “It is my duty as the Queen of Heaven to eradicate sin and bring salvation”
Mary responded to Gabriel, before she looked at the door to the arena behind her.
“We’ll keep cheering you on, Mom”
Judith said happily, Jesus and Joseph nodding as Gabriel then accompanied them back to the audience seats, Mary looking at the arena entrance, taking out her bible and beginning to pray as Heimdall began to announce her entrance.

2024.05.21 19:55 No-Spring-309 46m - This is the DINK life I dream about...

Our house is cozy and well-maintained. I take care of the lawn while she's in her garden. We enjoy being together like that. Our lives are quiet and peaceful and very gratifying for two introverted homebodies like us. Our relationship is based on a connection so strong and so deep that neither of us could even conceive of the word "divorce." We travel a lot, checking off items on our list of must-visit places. Our dual income allows us to live very well. We love to spend our days reading, watching shows or baseball, or cooking together, or doing puzzles/boardgames etc. We have cats. Maybe our house is crawling with cats. Both of us know that we're going to die in this house someday, and be buried next to each other. Our love is strong and we take care of each other. We're always there for each other. We're partners, we're family. We share similar hobbies but we also have our own things for when we need our own space. We keep the romance alive with lasting affection and intimate sexuality. But this house, this woman, this life... it all amounts to what I've always wanted and no longer believe I will ever have: a true home and family.

2024.05.21 18:48 Juzabro Forge of Darkness Chapter 6 summary

Part Two: The Solitude of This Fire
Chapter 6
Location: Hust Forge. Hust Henarald's conference room
POV: Kellaras
After making Kellaras wait some days, Hust Henarald finally grants him an audience and says "One day, I will be a child again". These words seem to be nonsense to Kellaras. While waiting for his audience he noticed the Hust Forge never stops working. Henarald goes on to say we all war with two parts of ourselves and both make weapons from anything at hand. Henarald asks Kellaras if Anomander simply wants a sword or to join the Hust Legion. He doesn't think Urusander's Legion would like that very much. Kellaras says he knows the request of a sword is unusual at this time. Henarald responds by saying others will see it as political. Perhaps even a secret allegiance. Kellaras is put off balance by Henarald's pragmatic responses and then shifting into ending each with "One day I will be a child again." Henarald asks for specs and Kellaras says Anomander wants the sword to be silent. Henarald responds by asking if he would prefer a gagged weapon and if Anomander will hide it's origin. Kellaras tells Henarald that Anomander wants his swords spine to be quenched in the purity of Darkness itself. Henarald muses on power and says those with the most power have the greatest fear and that means power is meaningless and delusional. Kellaras counters that the Forulkan would have enslaved the Tiste with their power had they won, but they lost to the power of the Tiste. Henarald responds, "A triumph in solitude makes a hollow sound, and to every glory proclaimed the heavens make no answer".
Kellaras reiterates that his master requests a sword. Henarald responds "To take the blood of Darkness". Kellaras is surprised by this as Mother Dark is not Azathanai. Henarald asks how she feeds her power and if now that Anomander knows the secret of House Hust if he will use it for political gain. Kellaras says his Lord is the ultimate secret keeper. Henarald agrees to forge Anomander's sword, but requires that he be present at the quenching of it by darkness to witness if it is blood Mother Dark uses. Kellaras tells him he won't be able to see anything and leaves the chamber trembling mostly upset by Henarald's repeated assertions that he will return to childhood.
Kellaras goes to the main hall where there is feast taking place. He pushes aside his doubts and is proud that he got Henarald's agreement to make the sword. He searches out Galar Baras and finds him leaning against a pillar staring at a woman that had just entered. Kellaras sees her see Galar Baras and watches her stiffen. The woman is Toras Redone. Kellaras notes that even grimed from hard travel she is beautiful and makes his way to Galar. Galar asks if Henarald spoke to Kellaras of childhood. Kellaras says yes, but does not understand. Kellaras invites Galar to join a table and Galar accepts though he tells him he can't drink. Galar tells the captain that the childhood thing troubles them all. Kellaras asks him to call him by his name and not rank. Galar says that Henarald claims that he is losing his recent memories, but no one can see any evidence of this. Galar tells Kellaras of a sickness called Loss of Iron that afflicts smiths. Kellaras tells Galar that in his meeting Henarald was sharp and focused. No evidence of a crumbling mind. Galar asks if he will tell Anomander of this. Galar says it has no bearing on the creation of the sword and says his master would likely just say returning to childhood isn't a bad idea.
POV: Galar Baras
Kellaras gets drunk and stumbles off and now Galar has to be alone with his thoughts and heartache at the presence of Toras Redone. She was still holding court at one of the tables and after a while she shuffles over to him. She comments on her husband transferring as far away as he could. She tells Galar that he is a pariah in the citadel. That people think him arrogant and dismissive. She knows that's not him, so is puzzled. She says he should have sex with the priestesses. That celibacy is not for soldiers. He should feed his appetites. Galar responds by asking if she is well fed. The barb slides off of her and she says well enough. She says she is certain that her husband stays true to her and that leads her to infidelity. Galar does not understand this. She changes the subject and says she has missed him. She tells him to go to bed, but he knows he won't be alone for long. He compares himself to Toras Redone's husband, Calat Hustain, knowing that both spend their nights alone, "because it was in their nature to choose it: to remain alone in the absence of love"
Location: Neret Sorr
POV: Kadaspala
With Osserc and Hunn Raal gone, Kadaspala is having a more enjoyable time having dinners with Urusander. The painting however was still irritating to him. He doubts anyone will see below the surface of his painting. He is finished and will leave in the morning. "There is but one god, and its name is beauty. There is but one kind of worship, and that is love. There is for us but one world, and we have scarred it beyond recognition". Kadaspala now truly sees Urusander and is terrified. Urusander asks him why he chose to accept this request. Kadaspala says he's denied hundreds, but if anyone can prevent a civil war, it's the man in the portrait. Although his thoughts imply that that may not be the same man standing before him.
Location: House Enes lands
POV: Cryl Durav
On his short self-imposed exile from the wedding preparations, Kryl finds the antlers of a long dead Eckalla. A symbol of triumph. Cryl thinks the triumph is hollow. Hunting for food was once a necessity, but that necessity bred traditions that resulted in the extinction of this animal. Thinking back on his youth he dreamt of discovering a new world free of Tiste where he could become prey and know the thrill of fear. Enesdia was also present in these fantasies. He thinks, "He had been trained for war just as he had been taught how to hunt and how to slay, and these were deemed necessary skills in preparation for adulthood. How sad was that?".
His horse notices some movement and he sees a troop of Tiste riders approaching. This makes no sense as there is no reason for them to come here on there way to somewhere else. Cryl rides to meet them and sees that they lead a score of Jheleck children. There were no chains. The captain of the company asks why Cryl is out this far and Cryl tells him who he is. The captain breaks in and says Cryl is probably fleeing the frenzy of the coming marriage. The captain introduces himself as Scara Bandaris and says there are two reasons for him being here, one trying to figure out what to do with the Jheleck hostages and two to attend the wedding. Cryl agrees to escort them all to house Enes. Scara perceptively guesses that Cryl is out here because he is in love with Enesdia. He says he will say no more on the subject.
There are 25 Jheleck children. Scara says they will raise wolves in these children. Cryl says he's heard they are more like hounds. Scara says hostage taking may come back to bite them. Scara laughs at his own joke and forces a smile onto Cryl's face. Cryl feels a little better.
Location: House Enes
POV: Enesdia
Enesdia is upset that Cryl has been gone for a few days. She searches out her father and overdramatically asks him why they are shirking their responsibility to their hostage. She says, "For all you know he could be lying at the bottom of a well, legs shattered and dying of thirst" Jaen responds "Dying of thirst in a well?" he tells her he sent him on a search for Eckalla. She says that's a hopeless quest. Jaen says Cryl's familiar with those. Enesdia asks what he means. Jaen responds that his time with House Enes is ending. It has only now struck Enesdia that her companion will not be at her side much longer. Enesdia laments the fact that Cryl's family has only one occupation. He will be a soldier like his only living brother, Spinnock. She muses that she could ask Andarist to offer Cryl a commission in the citadel, far away from fighting. Cryl would never know, but he would be safe.
Location: House Drukorlas
POV: Orfantal
Orfantal is standing near the estate road with Wreneck, a stable boy that used to be his friend. They are also standing near an old nag horse. They have been standing for some time. They are being circled by 3 feral dogs that have smelled the food that Orfantal carries. Orfantal wished he knew why Wreneck stopped being his friend, but it seemed impossible to ask now. Orfantal has all of his possessions in a trunk. They are not much. Orfantal thinks he could fit in there too, ready to be discarded. Wreneck is 10, Orfantal is 5. His grandmother is sending him off somewhere to learn how to grow up. He knows there will be a time when unhappiness comes into his life as it does with every boy. A wagon pulls up. It will be his ride to wherever he is going. Wreneck makes sure they know that he is going to the citadel and that he is nobleborn. Wreneck tells Orfantal that the old horse is blind in her left eye, so don't let anything ride on that side of her. Orfantal says goodbye to Wreneck and Wreneck waves dismissively and leaves.
POV: Wreneck
Wreneck turns from some distance to watch them leave with tears running down his face. He resolves himself to return to the "evil hag" and now he doesn't even have Orfantal to make his life easier. Nerys Drukorlat had forbidden him from playing or even speaking to Orfantal. She would fire him if he did. His mother and father and sisters relied on his income. He wished he could have played with Orfantal this entire morning and hugged him goodbye, but he was afraid of the evil hag.
Location: Toras Keep. On the road to the Citadel
POV: Orfantal
The party makes camp and the scarred old man who loaded Orfantal's trunk says that this is likely his horse's last journey. Orfantal is sad to not even know the horses name and wonders what things she has seen in her life. He decided that she had been a warhorse and saved her rider many times, but not from the betrayal that finally killed him. The leader of the troop introduces himself to Orfantal as Haral and tells him not to call him sir. He tells him he guards merchants and that's all. Orfantal asks about bandits. Haral says there are some Deniers. Haral tells Orfantal that he will be sharing Gripp's tent. The man who took care of his horse. He says that Gripp can be trusted and not some of the other men in the party.
Haral says after this he will be joining House Dracon's houseblades. Orfantal asks if he was a soldier once. Haral says few weren't in his generation. Orfantal introduces himself. Haral asks why she named him that. His name is a Yedan dialect. The holy language of the monks, Shake. Narad, one of the guards, says it means unwanted and laughs. Haral tells him to keep his mouth shut on this journey and tells Orfantal his name doesn't mean unwanted, it means unexpected. Narad laughs again and Haral savagely kicks him in the face then punches him. He then walks away from the unconscious guard. Orfantal is trembling and his heart is beating fast. Gripp comes over and calms him down. He says it's discipline and Narad was pushing for weeks. Orfantal now has a face to put to all the faceless betrayers in his war games. Narad. Gripp shows Orfantal how to raise a tent.
Location: Within sight of Dracon's Hold
POV: Ivis
Ivis and Sandalath are riding towards the hold. Ivis tells her that Draconus will be gone for several weeks still. Her body tells him that she probably had a child, but that's none of his business. She is now a hostage at House Dracon's and she will be treated well. Sandalath asks where Draconus comes from. Ivis says even his servants do not know, but he proved his worth in the war. Ivis is upset at the discipline now presented by his houseblades and resolves to fix it. Sandalath is being led to a warm bath and thanks Ivis. He responds, "My pleasure, milady". Hilith the head of the house maids does not like him calling her a lady as she is only hostage now. She lets him know it. Ivis says, "Old woman, you are no queen to so command me. I will choose the honorific our guest deserves. She rode well and without complaint. If you have complaint, await the pleasure of our lord upon his return. In the meantime, spit out that sour grape you so love to suck on, and be dutiful." Hilith says this isn't over. Ivis responds with a command to leave his courtyard and if he hears of her being miserable to the hostage that it will in fact not be over.
Location: Dracon's Hold
POV: Sandalath
Hilith tells Sandalath to come with her to the bath. Sandalath asks if the water is hot. and asks her if there is wood ready just in case. Sandalath challenges Hilith and says she is to treat her as if she was the lady of the house. Hilith bristles but agrees. Sandalath remembers her first stint as a hostage and the horrible hag that made her life miserable until Andarist found out and got rid of her. If Hilith turns out to be the same, she will tell Draconus. A younger maid escorts her to the correct bath, not the one Hilith had prepared for her. Sandalath says if Hilith is her enemy, then Sandalath should have many allies. The maid smiles and says thousands. Sandalath asks the maid about Ivis and if she finds him handsome. She says he is old, but Sandalath doesn't think so. Sandalath tells the maid she feels welcomed by this house and feels born anew.

2024.05.21 17:31 coghlanpf Want to create multiple authenticators as backup

I've been learning more about how authenticators work for 2FA and noticed:
I'm using Google Authenticator for 2FA.
Since free accounts only support one authenticator instance, it makes sense that the last one added stomps on the one that existed previously. I'm puzzled though, why paid accounts support multiple authenticator instances, but it seems that only the most recently created instance will work. I thought each new instance represented another backup.
Am I missing something, or does each new authenticator instance stomp on the current/active one, while leaving previously-created authenticators in the list? I was happily creating multiple authenticator instances, thinking that I could use any of the codes displayed in my Google Authenticator, but was shocked to discover that only the last one created (on another family member's phone as a backup) actually worked.
I now get that I should save the seed key and use that to "innoculate" backup authenticators, rather than create more authenticators, but why doesn't Azure issue a warning and delete the existing instance when a new authenticator is created?

2024.05.21 17:10 wildmax12 Congratulations Michael Burnham! Thank you! ( for being this amazing captain, well written and acted hero)

I am grateful for Discovery writers and Sonequa Martin-Green that delivered such a rounded female hero that I can enjoy and be inspired. I cried, laughed, fought with Michael. I fell in love twice with Ash and Book, I've met so amazing friends and colleagues who became my family like Tilly, Hugh, Stamens, Saru, Rayner, Reno and so many more.
From Burnham first days as a number one officer who wanted to prevent the Klingon war and was judged and put in jail for her actions, to becoming a captain of her own crew, it's amazing how she developed so gracefully. She still struggles to prove herself, to find the right answer, the right decission, whether to please her loved ones or to think about the mission first, who to save and what action to take, but still we see she's grown, became confident, relaxed and find strenght in her team. She can't win in everything, sometimes taking one path makes it dissapoint or risk others, that is what makes the story compelling. But at the end of the day we know she will prevail as it should be with the good guys. I love her dymanic with her family too. Spock on Discovery was one of my favorite.
I can't say I like every story and agree with every plot, but this show was a bless for me, and having a real female lead that the writers care about and write is something special. I also love the serious tone, the fact that it talks about different social problems and that the story is one centralized for the whole season. It is a lot more interesting every episode to reveal a little piece of the puzzle, instead of the popular wacky tone with episodic structure most shows have now. It was a journey to discover all those misteries, like who is the Red angel, who are the Ten C, what is the next clue to find the Progenetors technology and we can see that the writers put so much thought in to these stories and into writting Michael as the main protagonist who is proactive and drives the story.
Sonequa Martin-Green is an amazing actress. I hope that with Discovery ending this is not the last time we see captain Michael Burnham. I will miss her on my screen and Discovery crew.

2024.05.21 16:14 AtlantiumAI SUPERLIGHT Episode 9

SUPERLIGHT Episode 9
SUPERLIGHT Episode 9
By Roc Hatfield
https://preview.redd.it/mxfkcdznfs1d1.png?width=2912&format=png&auto=webp&s=968b039867f9d923a3af1d8764b4cef6e39d0f97
Aetherians of the New Empire are banned from ever returning to Aetheria or from joining into the One. The border net is a solid wall to non-authorized Aetherians, impenetrable. The Elo Eloahim passes through the net without a hitch.
The Blade has now come to a full stop. The shuttle carrying Excelsior Andriel is docking with the Blade. Once the shuttle is cleared of occupants, it will return to the Elo Eloahim autonomously.
Excelsior Andriel has made his way back to the bridge of the Blade and is admiring the border net through the giant viewer screens. I haven't been out here for many strands. Beautiful to look at.
Send some technicals out to one of those nodes to have a look at it. I am sure it is manifest, but there must be a way to defeat it. I want to tear a hole in it, big enough to push the Blade through it, Andriel says.
There is only one express elevator that drops down to the 17th floor. The operator must enter a series of codes as the elevator descends. The codes are changed frequently like a password.
There are government secrets on 17 that can never be accessed by unauthorized personnel, says Steven as the elevator nears the bottom floor of the Pine Bluff underground base. The door opens and Nancy, Walter, Brad and the two techies spill out of the elevator to a large hall with long corridors running down each side. The footprint of the bottom floor covers about 120,000 square feet, about the size of a car factory or supersized retail store.
We have all your gear in a lab down this hallway, says Steven. We are anxious to see your device at work, Oscar says. Hey, do you guys want to see something really cool? Steven asks.
All three nod in unison. Great. Follow me, Steven says.
The group walks down a hall and enters a lab, lots of tables, computers, not much to see really. Up on one table is a group of long plastic tubes, 12 inches in diameter, maybe 4 or 5 feet long. You can see mirrors at the end.
Wow, this looks interesting, Walter says. You are looking at the real reason we went into Iraq. Saddam had this built from instructions found on ancient Sumerian clay tablets found near where Babylon once stood.
They called it the Looking Glass. Our CIA guys heard about it and had photos and diagrams of it smuggled out of Iraq. We recreated it out at Area 51, Groom Lake actually.
When they saw that it worked, the powers that be, Steven makes air quotes with his hands, decided to go in and get it. This is the real deal. The whole 9-11 scam was part of an elaborate plan to get this thing out of Iraq. That’s my opinion.
Plus other sundry items. Walter, Nancy, and Brad are just stunned. Steven turns on a light source that bounces around from mirror to mirror and ends up at a large concave mirror, 15 inches in diameter.
You can see faint moving images on the mirror's surface that look like old 8mm grainy film. It looks like rioting in the streets, store shelves empty, a stark apocalyptic scene. Large crowds gather around the U.S. Capitol building and the Vatican.
Steven, where are these images coming from? Brad asks. From the future? Steven responds. No? Brad says. Yes, from the future. Steven says.
Somehow, light being moved over all these mirrored surfaces breaks out a light that is streaming in from the future. Walter moves in closer. So are these images just random snippets? Or are they organized in some manner? Walter questions.
The best we can tell is that they are like listening to an old AM radio at night. Stations from far away can drown out stations that are close by. Just sort of a jumble of music coming in and fading out.
It seems that the images are from different points in the future. One may be 5 years out and the next 50 years away, Steven says. So, what is so important about it, Nancy asks? Think about it, Nancy, having advanced warning of coming events.
Plus, many times we can see advanced technology. It's priceless, Oscar says as he reaches over and turns off the device. The one big drawback, however, is that, just us witnessing of these events will change them.
It's a very tight loop. We have been shooting video from the big mirror. When we compare previously shot video from images from the look in glass, they are different.
Some in subtle ways and others in major ways. Simply observing the future changes it. So we only keep it on for brief periods until we understand this phenomenon better, Steven concludes. Okay, let's get you guys settled into your lab. I am really looking forward to learning more about this superlight. Our world is amazing, isn't it? Steven says,
Washington DC is spectacular at sundown. The lights from the monuments and government buildings make for dramatic and exciting backdrop for the world leaders and dignitaries that visit, as well as the everyday politicians that haunt the city. A group of high-powered cabinet secretaries and military bosses have sit down for an emergency meeting with the president. Gentlemen, greetings and thank you for coming up here to the White House on such short notice.
I have been receiving phone calls and veiled threats from world leaders all day. Number one, what is all this fuss really all about? And secondly, what is going to be our stance in regards to this crazy technology, which I have heard very little about? Are we just going to take it from a private company and turn it over to all the governments of the world? The president asks out of breath, Mr. President, if I may, says Senator Abramson, who is seated on one of the two sofas just in front of the president's big resolute desk. I believe I was the first one to hear of this device.
I heard from a doctor that works at the company, one of my constituents. He came to me frantic and told me many details about this device. He had the presence of mind to film an experiment he participated in, shot on his cell phone.
I was so concerned about this horror show being in my district, I contacted the FBI director to look into it, for I thought it was a national security risk at the highest degree. The FBI director sent in a team with a warrant to seize any and all evidence related to the Superlight project. Brad Hillier, the company CEO, was one step ahead of us and had already moved all key components of the device and associated files and plans.
We have no leads at the moment as too where he and members of his staff are hiding out. I would like to offer whatever assistance I can, being that this thing was created in my district. I would like to help if I can.
Thank you, Senator. We can use all the help we can get. I want to thank you all again for coming up, and I would like to suggest that each of you consult with your respective departments and get me a letter that lays out your thoughts on how to proceed with this situation.
Please give me something by the end of tomorrow. I will then be better informed on my decisions on how to deal with this issue. Thank you all for coming.
All the attendants stand and stream out of the Oval Office. Ed Bramson hangs back. Mr. President, I had a deep black officer from the Space Force speak to my oversight committee, and she let it be known that she knew about Hilliard before any of this became public.
I have no way of getting to her. But I thought you should know, she may have information regarding Hilliard. Very interesting, Senator.
I will try looking under some rugs. But as you know, I have little authorization over deep black project sites or the people that run them. Please stay in contact, Senator.
Atlan, the home world of the Aetherians, is the seat of the Old Dominion. The large planet sits just outside the massive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy, in a large cluster of stars orbiting the event horizon. The light from all the nearby stars eliminate all darkness.
Every planet in this cluster is lit every hour, all over the globe by multiple stars. Massive bright stars can be seen in every direction. Humans could not exist here, the heat and radiation would evaporate the water in a human body in seconds.
But it's paradise to the Aetherians that dwell here. An indescribable garden, hundreds of millions of vast mansion homes with complex landscaping. There are over 100 planets inhabited by the Aetherians in this sector.
One more beautiful and amazing as the next, Atlan is home to the One. The One walks these gardens from time to time, and abides in a mountain compound known as Shiloe Ahim. Ambassador Lucentel the hand of the One, is an Ark ancestor.
He was with the One long before the Matterverse was spoken into existence. There are a small number of Ark ancestors, as many as 100 are known to live. The Akashe, the Ancient Hall of Records, holds records telling the story of the One and the Ark ancestors alone on Atlan.
The Ark ancestors wanted a family and asked the One to enrich them with sons. The One said he would extract a small spark of himself and release it as a son for each Ark ancestor. Many years later, the Ark ancestors developed the ability to petition the One for new sons and daughters.
The sons and daughters of the Ark ancestors are slightly less powerful than the Ark ancestors. Over billions of years, the eternal Aetherians have multiplied into trillions of beings and lower beings. The lower beings take the form of many exotic creatures that inhabit thousands of planets scattered across the Aetherians' Old Dominion.
Atlan is standing by to receive us, Ambassador, announces the Commander on duty. Please dock and secure the Elo-Eloahim. I would like to travel down to Atlan as soon as possible.
Brad, Nancy, and Walter have finished setting up the superlight in the big lab that Steven and Oscar gave them. Brad, you need to see the footage I shot of you while you were sleeping in the van. The interview I did with your driver, Zia, Nancy says.
What? You interviewed my driver? Brad says surprised. Yes, when you were asleep in the van, Nancy says, as she is cutting up the video footage. Okay, here we go.
Brad is watching the video, riveted by it. He turns it off. Well? Nancy asks. It's nice, I always wanted a daughter, Brad giggles.
I am sorry this shit is so crazy that if I don't laugh, I would cry. We haven't peeled back even one layer of this onion yet, and it's already difficult to keep up with. When I came out here with Archer on his private plane, Captain Carpenter introduced me to her little grey alien friends.
We flew aboard a small silver disc-shaped craft to their home base, that sits out around the rings of Saturn. Nancy looks right at Brad. Stop Brad, are you high right now?.
Brad pauses, don't you remember at lunch, Captain Carpenter said I would bring you up to speed. Well, I am bringing you up to speed right now. Drivers, waterbots, now grey aliens and UFO discs, what's next? Nancy asks with indigence.
Brad says, who knew a high-frequency light designed to see cracks in critical aircraft components and machinery would cause intergalactic turmoil. So as I was saying, my understanding is that the Superlight is a threat to a huge data collecting operation that these high freaks have been doing for eons. High freaks? Walter asks puzzled.
Oh, that's just a name I gave them. They are the beings that inhabit the realm that we see with the Superlight. They function at a super high frequency of light.
Their world is as real as ours, just operating at a higher frequency. Without the advent of the Superlight, we would never know that they are all around us and strewn all across the universe, Brad continues. The high freaks drive avatars or waterbots as Zia calls us, without our knowledge, so they can collect millions of terabytes from hundreds of telemetry points during the lifetime of the avatar.
It seems that the traveler or waterbot is just a spacesuit, be it an advanced one for the high freaks, Brad concludes. So the superlight reveals this relationship to the travelers, and that is what they are concerned about. Follow the money.

2024.05.21 15:14 SpicyR1ceCakes Advice on Spouse Visa and Declaration of Commitment (Verpflichtungserklärungen)

Hallo, I am new here, I hope everyone is doing well! I have been struggling to find answers to some concerns and questions that myself and my partner have been having over the Spouse D-Visa and was hoping that someone here might be able to shed some much needed light on the matter(s). This is going to be a bit of a length post so apologies in advance.

BACKGROUND
So to start, a little bit of background. I am from the UK and my partner is from Germany (we are both nationals of our respective countries). She currently lives at home with her parents. We have been engaged for 5 years and her family has been incredibly supportive of us the entire time; they are like a second family to me and I love them all dearly. I have visited Germany on several occasions over the years and I have spent around 200 days (give or take) visiting them (of course not all in one go; Schengen Visa, 90/180 Day Rule and so on). We have talked for a while about making things more permanent and less "long distancy" and we have looked at many options but we would like for me to try getting a Spouse D-Visa. This was something we wanted to work toward but we were unsure of various factors and to make a long story short, my partner's parents support this and have invited me to move to Germany and come and live with them altogether in their house; again, my partner's family has been insanely supportive of this decision and have offered so much to help us achieve this wherever possible.

CURRENT PROGRESS
Where we are at so far: Well, that's the thing, not very far. You see, we have been looking at all of the requirements to meet the criteria for a Spousal D-Visa for me to move to Germany so that we might get married and we have discussed all of the steps and each piece of the puzzle. When we looked at the criteria for financial support this raised some alarm bells for us. I have had a chronic condition since childhood that has resulted in me suffering from severe migraines on a regular basis as well as issues that affect my physical abilities with joint problems and has gradually become more noticeable though I do my best to keep active. Annoyingly, I have gotten the bare minimum in terms of help and support for these problems via my GP, at one point being told I just have to deal with it if I did not want to take the medication I was given (it caused chest pains so yes I threw that **** away).

Because of this, finding permanent, full-time employment has been difficult to keep because not a lot of people in my experiences will recognise severe migraine episodes as a notable problem, to the point that I had to leave my previous job because it was causing me to miss hours and was ultimately not working out for me or the employer. Now, I already know that if this causes problems for me in my home country then I know this will follow me to Germany should we move forward with our plans and all I can do is hope that I am able to manage it and get on and still be productive, and a minor concern for me is that this will be enough for my visa application to be rejected or even result in me having to leave at a later date in case of unemployment? But this isn't main purpose of this post, so we can gloss over this.

However, this is a concern that we have had for a while now and we discussed the options and this is where the Declaration of Commitment (Verpflichtungserklärungen) comes into the picture. This is a nice summary for what this document is for those that may not be familiar:
"A Declaration of Commitment is proof that the applicant’s means of subsistence are secured for their duration of stay in Germany. By signing this document, the host pledges to cover for the guest the following:"
We talked through this option and my partner's parents agreed immediately that this is something they would be absolutely happy with signing to ensure that we can follow through with our plans and are in the process of writing up a formal 'Letter of Invitation' to accompany all of the additional documentation. They are also going to be seeing about chatting to the folks at their local ausländerbehörde to see if they can offer any insight.

THE MAIN BIT
After all of this, here is the meat and potatoes of this post (finally, lol).
What we are trying to figure out is if the Spousal D-Visa can be used in this way alongside a Declaration of Commitment (Verpflichtungserklärungen) IF it is my partner's parents signing it as the host as I would be moving into their household?
I have contacted the German Embassy in London via email and they replied telling me that they cannot give legal advice on that matters of Visas and that I must seek out an immigration lawyer for support. I have emailed two immigration lawyer services that I could find for a brief comment on the situation and I have not received any kind of response from either one. I also cannot find much of an answer online on this topic that might cover out circumstances as they feel quite specific to us. I have even consulted the dreaded AI Chatbots about it but they all give conflicting answers (so I will not hold any value in the information they provide).
Something else we have discussed is also taking other routes to make a move possible as I do have a degree in Creative Media and Video Game Development. I wouldn't even mind being self-employed as a street vendor selling cheese toasties or some Mettbrötchen mit butter, yum yum! :P
I am really hoping that someone here can shed some light on this topic. I think I have mentioned most of what I needed to, I am sure I'll end up editing the post to add something. Again, sorry for the long novel.
Thanks guys!

2024.05.21 15:06 raied_lite The Vanishing Malaysian Airline Flight 370.

On March 8, 2014, something strange happened that still puzzles many people today. A big airplane called a Boeing 777 was flying from Malaysia to China with 239 people onboard. But then, it just disappeared. Nobody knows exactly what happened.
A huge search was started to find the missing plane. It cost a lot of money—$160 million—and many countries helped. But they only found a few pieces of the airplane, not enough to understand what really happened.
The Prime Minister of Malaysia said the plane disappeared somewhere in the Indian Ocean, but he didn't give many details. This made people come up with lots of ideas about what might have happened. Some say it was hijacked, others think a foreign country took it secretly. Some even talk about the pilot doing something on purpose, or maybe there was a big fire on the plane.
There are wilder ideas, too, like the plane crashing into the ocean in a strange way or getting hit by a space rock. Some people even think aliens might have been involved!
Experts who study why people think these things say it's normal for us to come up with these theories when we're scared or angry and don't have clear answers.
But even after three years of searching and looking at thousands of miles of ocean, we still don't know what really happened to Malaysian Airlines Flight 370. It's like a big puzzle we haven't solved yet. The families of the people on the plane and the whole world are still waiting for answers, but they might never come. This mystery will probably stay a big question mark in history books, one of the biggest puzzles of our time.
Thoughts on this?

2024.05.21 14:52 Outrageous_Work_1404 The Elderly Woman and Her Lullaby

Two years ago, I took a part-time job that still haunts me to this day. I decided to finally write about my experience, hoping it might help me process everything. I was a college student, and like a lot of you, I needed a part-time job to help cover tuition and other expenses. After a long search, I found what seemed like the perfect job. It was a caregiver position, working from 5 PM to 9 PM, taking care of elderly people. The job was pretty straightforward, make sure they took their meds, had their meals, and just hang out with them for a few hours.
I got assigned to take care of this 85-year-old lady. Let's call her Mrs. Eleanor to keep things anonymous. She lived alone in this quaint little house on the edge of town. The place was old but well-kept, with a charming, slightly overgrown garden that probably hadn't seen a gardener in a few years. She had a small poodle named Max who was always by her side, following her around everywhere she went.
From the start, the house felt... off. There were no family pictures anywhere. I mean, you'd think at her age, she'd have photos of kids, grandkids, maybe an old lover or something. But no, nothing. It was weird. The walls were bare except for a few generic paintings. I asked her about it once, just casually during a conversation, but she brushed it off and changed the subject real quick. She had this look in her eyes, a mix of sadness and something I couldn’t quite place. I didn't push it because I didn't want to lose the job, but it definitely made me curious.
My daily routine was simple enough. I'd get there around 5 PM, cook dinner, make sure she took her meds, and just keep her company for a few hours. Max, the poodle, was a friendly little guy, always happy to see me, wagging his tail and jumping around despite his age. Mrs. Eleanor, though, was polite but pretty reserved. She didn’t talk much about her past or family, which just added to the mystery. Our conversations were always pretty basic, like talking about the weather or what was on the news.
Every evening, as I cleaned up after dinner, I'd hear Mrs. Eleanor singing a lullaby. It was the same soft, melodic tune every night, echoing through the quiet house. While the song was gentle, it really creeped me out. It felt so out of place in the otherwise silent house. She sang it every night, like clockwork, and it always made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Sometimes, I would find myself pausing my cleaning just to listen. The whole situation was unsettling. The house, the lack of family photos, the nightly lullaby, it all felt like pieces of a puzzle that didn't quite fit together. I couldn't shake the feeling that there was a deeper, darker story behind those melodies. It was like the house held secrets that it wasn’t ready to share, and I was just an outsider peeking in.
As the weeks went by, my curiosity grew stronger. Why was she singing this lullaby every night? Who was it for? The routine stayed the same, but the sense of unease kept building. I had been given strict instructions by my employer not to go into Mrs. Eleanor's room. It was one of the non-negotiable rules of the job, probably to respect her privacy and maintain professional boundaries. One evening, while I was cleaning the dishes, I noticed that the door to Mrs. Eleanor's small office was slightly opened. She had always kept it closed and had told me it was just a mess she didn't want me to fuss around with. But that evening, the door was invitingly open. Hearing her close the bathroom door upstairs, I decided to take the chance and peek inside the office.
The room looked straight out of the 1960s. Blue walls, a small single bed, and a wooden desk cluttered with old papers. There was a small closet to the left that caught my eye. The whole setup struck me as odd. This room, which looked like it belonged to a young boy, was in the home of an elderly woman living alone. There were no pictures, no personal belongings, nothing to explain why this room was here. I couldn't explore more because I heard footsteps right above me, making my heart race. Panicking, I quickly closed the door and hurried back to the kitchen. The rest of the evening went by uneventfully. I gave her the necessary pills, made sure she was comfortable, and left for the night. But I couldn’t stop thinking about that room. Why would she have a boy's room in her house if she had no children? The thought gnawed at me, creating a whirlwind of questions.
The next day, my curiosity got the better of me. I decided to do some research on Mrs. Eleanor. I spent hours online, searching for any information about her. But nothing came up. No social media profiles, no news articles, nothing. Not a single piece of information about her life.
It was baffling and left me with more questions than answers. I returned to work after the weekend, determined to find out more. That evening, as usual, I prepared dinner and ensured Mrs. Eleanor took her medication. Then I waited for her to go to the bathroom. The moment I heard the bathroom door close, I quickly made my way to the office. The room was just as I had left it, with that same lingering, musty smell hanging in the air. This time, I opened the closet. Inside, I found small boxes, stacked neatly but covered in a thin layer of dust. My heart pounded as I opened one to find baby clothes, tiny socks, pants, and sweaters, all meant for a baby boy. They were neatly folded and seemed well-preserved, despite their apparent age. But why would Mrs. Eleanor have these?
The discovery left me with more questions than answers. I went back to making dinner, trying to process what I had found. My mind was racing with possibilities, but none of them made any sense. Was it possible she had a child once? If so, where was he now? That night, as usual, Mrs. Eleanor began singing her lullaby. Normally, this song would send shivers down my spine, creeping me out every time. But this night was different. Instead of fear, I felt a surge of curiosity that I couldn’t ignore. I went upstairs quietly and with each step up, the lullaby grew louder. The door to her bedroom was almost closed but had a small gap, just enough for me to peek through. She always left a gap, saying it was to let Max come and go as he pleased. I peered through the gap and was shocked by what I saw.
There, Mrs. Eleanor was sitting in a rocking chair, gently swaying back and forth. She was holding Max in her arms, cradling him like a baby, and singing softly to him. Next to her was a small wooden cradle, old and worn, as if it hadn't been used in years. She continued her lullaby, her voice soft and melodic, but now it felt more sad than creepy. Her gentle rocking, the way she cradled Max, and the soft melody of the lullaby created an image that was hard to shake. I slowly backed away from the door, not wanting to intrude any further. I went back downstairs, my mind spinning from what I had just seen.
This made me think and start connecting all the dots. Was she pretending her dog was a baby? A baby she never had? I could be wrong, but that would make sense, right? The boy’s room, the baby clothes, no pictures, no husband, no children, just her and her dog, whom she pretended was her own son.
There are many possibilities. Maybe she lost her child during a miscarriage, or the son died somehow. It’s heartbreaking to think about, but I had no way of knowing for sure since there was nothing about her online. I even asked my boss about Mrs. Eleanor, trying to get some information about her past. My boss didn’t know much either, just that Mrs. Eleanor had always been a bit reserved and private. She mentioned that Mrs. Eleanor had experienced some tragic losses and that she was now quite lonely, with some health issues typical for her age, but nothing specific.
I worked out the rest of the week, but everything felt so creepy and intense. The quiet dinners together, the silence in the house, the haunting lullaby, it all felt like I was living in some kind of ghost story. Each night, as I lay in bed, I couldn't stop thinking about what I had seen. The pieces seemed to fit together, but they painted a picture that was too tragic and eerie for me to handle. Even during the day, I found myself distracted, replaying conversations with Mrs. Eleanor in my mind, looking for clues I might have missed. I thought about asking her directly but quickly dismissed the idea. It felt too intrusive, and honestly, I was scared of what I might uncover. There was a part of me that didn't want to know the full story because the fragments I had were already too much.
I noticed more details that added to the unsettling atmosphere. The way Mrs. Eleanor would sometimes pause mid-sentence as if lost in a distant memory, or how she would stroke Max's fur with a faraway look in her eyes. The house itself seemed to hold its breath.
I made my decision, I sent a text message to my boss saying I couldn’t continue with the job and that I was quitting immediately. I didn’t even say goodbye to Mrs. Eleanor. It felt wrong and I knew it was rude, but I just couldn’t bring myself to face her again. The thought of another day in that house, surrounded by haunting memories and unanswered questions, was too much for me to handle.
I felt a mix of guilt and relief. Guilt for leaving without a proper goodbye, for abandoning Mrs. Eleanor when she clearly needed someone. But also relief, knowing that I wouldn’t have to endure another evening of lullabies and unsettling silences. I knew I was being cowardly, but I just couldn’t do it. The experience had taken a toll on me, and I needed to get out. The whole experience was something I couldn’t shake off easily. It made me think a lot about the hidden struggles people face and the ways they cope with their pain. Mrs. Eleanor's story, whatever the full truth was, taught me that sometimes, the past can cast a long shadow over the present.
So, that's my story. It was a job I thought would be simple, but it ended up being one of the most emotionally intense experiences of my life.

2024.05.21 14:52 nassah221 27M giving this a shot

Worked up the courage to post after reading a few good profile on this sub. Here goes.
Age: Male just turned 27 last month
Height: 5’10” 66 kg
Caste: I do not believe in castes and neither do I associate with one. That being said I belong to an Urdu speaking family and my forefathers migrated from Delhi at the time of partition
Faith: Sunni Muslim (My family do not believe in nazar, niyaz, milad or any other bidah for that matter)
City: Karachi born and bred, would prefer potential matches from Karachi as well so as to make meet-ups easier for the families
Relationship Status: Single, never married/engaged
Education: Bachelors in Engineering
Occupation/Employer: Senior Engineer at a global cloud provider
Family: We’re 4 siblings in total. I’m the 3rd one and 2 of the eldest are married. Father is retired from work and mother is/has always been a homemaker
Do you want kids? Yes but not immediately
Goals/future plans: Settle down, do well professionally, have enough in life and be thankful for it
Ideal timeline for marriage: 1 year but that’s not something rigid and more up to whatever ends up being mutually agreeable
About myself: I am an avid reader and have always had a curious mind so I grew up being the erudite in my family (my teen years were spent watching vsauce on youtube :P). Having a calm/laid back demeanour, I have a practical approach to life with just the right amount of wondejest sprinkled in. There’s not a defined set of hobbies I have at any given point but love for football and a deep appreciation art (of all forms) have always been a mainstay. I value depth of connection with people I interact, depth of narrative/plot with media/content I consume (Succession is the GOAT tv series IMHO) and try to instil the same characteristics in my creative work. My core values are centred around honesty, compassion and genuineness - I am a straight shooter and do not appreciate manipulative tendencies in a person.
Some interesting facts:
Views on /Expectations from marriage:
I would like someone whom I can share a holistic experience of life with. I am a sensitive individual with boundless empathy and I’d like to share that compassion with my partner. I wouldn't be more comfortable with someone than who is, first and foremost like a friend. There are some people who you have a quiet/unsaid understanding and that’s how I’d like to build our relationship to be with clear and up-front communication and healthy behaviour patterns.
I’d expect my partner to fulfil their faraiz and strive to be better. I am pretty open-minded about things and operate on high trust but my religious values are rooted within the bounds of our mazhab and the tenets of haya. That being said, no one is perfect and I’m all for doing a bit better today than the last day.
tldr; Everyone is their own person so all in all I’d like to strike a happy balance between being a best friend, knowing my partner by heart and being one out of two unfit pieces of puzzle occasionally wanting to devour each other and merging our souls :D
Deal Breakers/traits unacceptable to me: shallow personality, lack of empathy towards people/animals, intolerant of views/opinions different than yours, emotionally unavailable/immature, deceitful, disingenuous, disorganised, drinking/smoking
Requirements/Preferences: Education: At least 16 years of education
Age range: ~24 - ~27 years
Height: No preference
Religious school of thought: Sunni Muslim (NO nazr, niaz, milad, pimurid etc)
Views on wanting my partner to work: It’s up to them. Working is not a requirement but I would support them if they value their profession and want to pursue their careehigher studies
How soon would I like to involve the families: As soon as it’s mutually apparent that it’d be a good match
People are complex so there isn’t a collection of words or combination of sentences that can perfectly define a person. In the interest of time and dwindling attention spans I tried to keep it as concise as possible. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if ^ catches your interest. Thank you for reading!

2024.05.21 13:45 blakeahadley My final conversation with Bobby Malicoat

If you read my last post, you will see that my conversations with Bobby toward the end of my time at South Grove were not exactly going well. Throughout the process of leaving and meeting with him, I kept wondering “when is he going to let go?” It felt as though he was going to cling to me until I eventually caved and came back. He had allowed my wife and I to stop serving and even attend other churches to take a break. I’m not sure if he thought I would attend somewhere else, be reminded that God only moves at South Grove, and then come back. That was not the case at all. We attended a church in Sandy Springs, GA and then one in Athens, GA which I had attended before. I had never heard preaching like that in person before. Those pastors gave me Christ each Sunday that I attended. That, coupled with my conscience, made it impossible to even think about going back to South Grove.
As a somewhat funny side note, Bobby apparently changed the music that was played on Sunday(s)? I had mentioned in passing during one of our conversations that I had issues with Bethel, Hillsong, and Elevation Church. Interestingly I was discipled by the preaching at each of those churches early on in my Christian life. However, I had become highly concerned with their theology and how other members might read their name on the lyric screen, and listen to their preaching. Anyway, Bobby brought up the fact that they changed the music “for me.” Honestly, the music was one of my last worries.
Before my last conversation with Bobby, he wanted to know why I couldn’t disagree with issues concerning spiritual gifts and the other issues I had and still be a member in good conscience. I remember the first time I brought conscience up to him, he seemed puzzled. I tried to explain to him that because of the way I felt about certain doctrines, I could not be a member because I believed that I was going against my conscience. That did not register with him.
Up to our final conversation, I felt like I was in a vice grip. I really thought Bobby was going to draw out the painful process of trying to get me to stay at South Grove over several months. That and him trying to pit my wife against me (probably a story for another time). But finally, over lunch at the Blind Pig, something changed. In our last lunch, the vice grip seemed to be loosened completely. Bobby asked if I had heard of the “Leaving the Network” website. I had no idea what he was talking about, but he said he addressed it at a team meeting. I thought nothing of it. He also said “I’m sorry if I’ve ever hurt you in any way.” Pretty vague, but I guess I appreciated it? He blessed me to leave at that point. A few months later, he grabbed lunch with my new pastor at Cleveland Road Baptist Church to “check in” on my wife and I. I would’ve loved to be a fly on the wall, but unfortunately I don’t know much about that conversation other than some of the awkwardness.
That was the last of the excruciating process of leaving South Grove. From being told I had a demon, to “where else are you going to go?”, to Bobby planting seeds of doubt in my wife’s mind, to “I need protected from the sheep,” to anger even mentioning my doubts about Steve Morgan, to “I bless you to leave.” If I said everything was smooth sailing after that, I would be a liar. I think about my time at South Grove everyday. I think of those who I hurt and I think about those who were hurt just like me. I think about those who are deceived and blindly follow. I think about the people who were once my family who would no longer and still no longer talk to me. I think about what was said about me after I left, if anything. I’m angry most days and sometimes I don’t know why. Except I do know why. I was a fool. Who moves across the country for something like that? Who gives up everything for something like that? Apparently someone like me. And for what? If nothing, it makes me long for justice. It makes me long for the day that I will be brought home to the One who loves me. That day seems really far away now though. Until then, I’m tormented by my time in the Network.

2024.05.21 11:29 catespice Memoirs of a Long Pig

“We’re a meat family,” my dad would proudly tell strangers. He’d wait for the quizzical look, then launch into detail, starting with how many freezers we had, how long we could sustain ourselves on the contents. It was just his way of starting a conversation, which made sense when you considered that raising and home-killing animals for food was, for want of a better term, his life-long hobby. His prize possession was one of those industrial-sized vacuum sealers: you could put half a pig inside and wrap it in plastic so tightly that every wrinkle and skin fold waxed unreal with shiny detail.
If we hadn’t lived in a rural area, albeit semi-urbanised, I guess it would have been pretty weird. But the mostly farming-stock locals only found his extra enthusiasm a little bit odd.
When he wasn’t being a bit embarrassing talking about it, I never really paid much heed to his hobby. I had a child’s vaguely grateful awareness that though our family went through some lean financial times, our stomachs never suffered like some of the families around us. All the beef, pork, ham and bacon in those big old chest freezers passed down from his dad really could have fed us for years.
I should preface all this by saying that I wasn’t a particularly bright kid, though neither was I dumb. I didn’t fail badly at anything in school, I just never achieved beyond a pass. I didn’t know it yet back then, still quietly dreaming about being a ballet star or a dressage champion, but mediocrity was my destiny. And I think that’s why I got on so well with my Aunt Liz.
Liz was my dad’s live-in youngest sister. She was one of those women who get described as ‘bubbly’ — not really pretty, not really smart, not a lot going on besides just being… well, all Liz. But she was salt of the earth; kind, caring, and great with kids. She was the only person who would willingly mind my two older brothers, who fought like hellcats and caused more trouble than the whole last generation of my family combined. People would privately lament to my parents that it was a shame Liz didn’t have kids of her own, but dad would just shake his head and say Liz liked it that way – that all the fun of looking after kids is being able to give them back to their parents.
I guess she was like me; nice, but mediocre. Lovely, but somehow forgettable when she wasn’t doing something for you.
But when Liz left us, I couldn’t forget her.
In hindsight, it was pretty weird timing that we had a big fortieth birthday party for Liz right before she disappeared. She was radiant that night; she’d hired a local girl to do her hair and makeup, and it was honestly the first time I’d ever seen her look pretty. She’d even worn a push-up bra under a tight red dress, which flattered her very plump curves well enough that the neighbour’s farmhand was spotted disappearing into the woolshed with her for a snog. In my dawning awareness, that gave a plain girl hope: if Aunty Liz could get a guy at forty, maybe things would turn out okay for me.
Anyway, I couldn’t forget how her pink cheeks, her eyes, her whole self, glowed that night before Liz went to bed. She said it was the best birthday ever, and that she was very much looking forward to the next stage of her life.
Would I have done anything different, if I had known? If I had realised what, exactly, that next stage was?
The week after the party, Aunt Liz said she was going on a little holiday up north, to visit some old school friends. She packed her things – she didn’t honestly have that many – and drove her little orange mini out onto the main road. And with a wave of one fleshy hand, she was gone. Nobody really thought much of it when she didn’t call, because nobody rural had cellphones back then. And Liz was, as I said, somehow kinda forgettable when she wasn’t right in front of you.
When we hadn’t had contact for six weeks, Dad tracked down the land line numbers for their old school buddies. They were surprised to hear from him — Liz had never arrived, so they had just assumed she’d cancelled her visit. No-one had thought to check. I eavesdropped on the conversation, and it sounded for all the world like *they* had forgotten about Aunt Liz, too.
From there it became a missing person case. The local cops came and talked to all of us; the farmhand who’d been seen snogging her was briefly detained, then let go, dad got grilled at length, even my hellion brothers were questioned thoroughly to see if this was one of their wild and dangerous pranks gone wrong.
But everything was a dead end. Nobody knew where Liz was, or what had happened to her.
The remains of her old mini were found halfway across the country, burned out on a beach, on a derelict stretch of ragged, rocky coastline. The police assumed murder and combed the area for remains. But even the most expert divers couldn’t conquer the incredible undertow and fast-shifting seabed of that coastline to look for evidence, so none was forthcoming.
Eventually the cops collectively shrugged and said that there was really nothing more they could do unless more information suddenly came to light. The locals knew nothing, no witnesses had come forward, and the trail was cold. As far as anyone knew, poor aunt Liz had been murdered on some desolate beach, far away from her home.
It didn’t feel fair to me. She’d once mentioned wanting her remains buried on our farm, in the graveyard plot beside grandma and grandad.
So, in my grief, I went into her room to look for something of hers to bury beside them.
Like I said, Liz didn’t have many things. Her room was pretty spartan, and her wardrobe was mostly sensible farm stuff. There was one exception: she, like me, did like to read, and she had a pretty good collection of well-thumbed books. I think it’s the escapism – even the most mediocre girl can lose herself in the plot of some trashy romance novel, imagine there’s still hope of being swept off her feet by that handsome stableboy, his inexplicable yearning for chubby plain girls.
So I set myself the task of going through the books, to find the right one to bury in the graveyard plot.
Most of them were exactly what you’d expect, but some of them were racier than I was used to. I felt various parts of my body flushing and tingling, as I read breathless prose about calloused hands touching the softest flesh of the protagonist. Okay, if I’m honest with myself, I might have got a little *too* invested in my project at that point. But that was also why I persisted going through her entire collection, until I found the ragged paperback from 1970, entitled Tawny Sands. And inside that trashy cardboard romance cover, I discovered not the tale of Tawny Sands, but some carefully hand-cut, stitched-in pages. A handwritten story in my Aunt’s rounded penmanship: Memoirs of a Long Pig.
I read her story twice in a row, utterly gripped.
Aunt Liz was no Stephen King – heck, she wasn’t even the Goosebumps guy – but her story was gripping and compelling, and I couldn’t put it down. Even if I hadn’t known her, I think that would have been true.
The gist of it was that Liz, when she was sixteen, had discovered that our family had a very long history of eating what she described as ‘Long Pork’. It’s an antipodean term, anglicised from the Pacific Islands: human meat.
Like me, young Liz still had some hopes and dreams. In one of her many failed attempts to find a special talent, she’d taken up cooking as a hobby. Naturally, with our family’s overabundance of meat, she’d scoured the freezers in the shed for ingredients: the racks of ribs and stacks of pork chops, butcher-paper wrappings all neatly labelled with the first letter of the name of the animal they came from.
She found familiar meat from Rodney, one of the pigs that had been recently slaughtered, emblazoned with an ‘R’ in her father’s strong, blocky lettering. There were cutlets labelled ‘M’ for Mary, from one of the lambs she’d hand-reared, and ‘F’ for Ferdinand, the steer they’d killed the month before. But she couldn’t explain the many, many curious parcels of meat on one side of the huge freezer, all labelled ‘J’ – at least, not until she took it all out and assembled it as well as she could on the scoured concrete floor of the killing shed. A big, frozen jigsaw puzzle without the box, her best attempt to discover what kind of beast the pieces had come from.
The animal, she quickly realised, was a Long Pig. Her own Aunt Jenny, who had died the month before – just after her fortieth birthday.
Fortunately, or perhaps not, for Liz, her father entered the shed right at that moment and realised his daughter had discovered the family secret. He sat down calmly on the lid of the freezer, and explained to her that this was a long-running family tradition, dating back to at least before his grandfather had been born.
“There are always people in life, Liz,” he’d said, “who won’t really amount to much. They want to be useful, want to be more. They strive and they strive, trying job after job, hobby after hobby, trying to hit on something they’re really good at. Something that makes them special. Those people can waste their whole lives, chasing dreams that never come true. Eventually they die unfulfilled, knowing that all their time has been wasted. That what they leave behind will fade quickly.”
His voice was oddly gentle as he leaned down and patted one of the neatly wrapped cuts of Aunt Jenny, still sitting frozen on the shed floor.
“Your Aunt Jenny was one of those people. So was my Aunt Irene.” He paused to gaze at his daughter, his next words peppered with emphasis. “But you see, my sweet Liz, they did find a purpose in life. They did find a way to be special, and they left this world utterly certain of their gift.” He stood up, stretched his back. “Let me show you.”
Liz waited while my grandad meticulously stacked the meat back into the freezer, all but one J-marked parcel that looked for all the world like a thick venison steak. He took her back to the farmhouse, and reverently unwrapped the deep red, heavily marbled meat to let it thaw. Then he laid it in the family’s ancient, cast-iron pan, basting it with butter and rosemary until a heavenly scent filled the kitchen, and Aunt Liz couldn’t stop her mouth from watering.
“Just try it. Let her show you. You’ll see exactly what I’m talking about.”
Even though she knew it was her aunt, Liz couldn’t stop herself from taking that first bite. There was something transcendent about the smell, overriding her natural revulsion that this was human meat, not one of their farm animals. For the first time, she truly realised it: we’re just another kind of animal. And weren’t her memories of Mary the lamb almost as fond as her memories of Aunt Jenny?
Liz explained then, in her curly handwriting, the explosion of taste that had assaulted her when she tried the steak. It was tender, it was succulent, it was rich beyond imagining. The fats melted on her tongue, lingering somewhere between pork and beef, but oddly neither. The flavour of the meat defied identification; something familiar, yet not.
But one thing she couldn’t deny; it was the most delicious thing she had ever eaten. Tears dripped onto her plate, mingled with the juice, the grease — not grief, but a pure, real, giddy delight.
“You’re tasting your aunt’s love for this family,” my grandad explained. “Her entire life was carefully curated, to eventually make unforgettable moments for us, just like this. This was her way of being special. This was the greatest gift she could possibly bring to our world – and because she realised that, she died with not a single regret. She knew her life had purpose. She was perfectly, completely fulfilled.”
I felt those words. I felt them lodge in my own belly, settling uncomfortably deep. I knew Aunt Liz, probably better than anyone else in the family. I’d seen how fucking happy she’d been on her fortieth, how goddamn fulfilled she was, despite apparently being a *nobody* and achieving *nothing*. Somehow, in the space of a single day, she had gone from being a forgettable background character to becoming the *main character*, immortalising herself in our family’s history with her sacrifice. Quite literally becoming part of all of us, forever.
I went to the killing shed after I finished with the book. I looked inside the freezers.
But there were no vacuum-sealed packages labelled ‘L’, no matter how deep I dug into the frozen stacks of plastic-wrapped flesh. Panicked now, not sure if I wanted to connect all the dots or unconnect them, I tried to think back over the last few months, recall any meals that had been unusually good. A few Sundays ago, we’d had a stew that really hit the spot and left me craving more. And I realised that the family had a really good night that night; my brothers behaved themselves, my parents didn’t fight, and grandma and grandad had been there. Hadn’t they looked far more… expectant than they should have?
I strained my brain, trying to recall if I’d seen the homekill bag on the kitchen bench – if I’d registered what letter it was. I knew it wasn’t an L. I would have remembered if it was an L.
And then it hit me, the memory, the connection, sizzling as if branded with a hot iron.
It had been an ‘E’.
E for Elizabeth. Not for Edward the pig.
I snorted at my own stupidity – of *course* Liz was short for Elizabeth – and as I comprehended my lack of smarts, I felt something give inside me.
I wasn’t clever, and nothing, nothing would ever make me smart. I had no big talents. I wasn’t beautiful, or even cute – and even if I had a million plastic surgeries, it still wouldn’t fulfill me. It wouldn’t be real.
I was a Liz.
I was a Jenny.
I was whoever the first aunt had been, the aunt who had dedicated her life to making her flesh as delicious as possible, who had worked every damn minute to be the best Long Pig she could ever be.
I wondered how many magical family evenings had been spent eating Aunt Jenny. How many glorious, satisfying, memorable dishes had been made out of her.
And… I wanted that. I wanted to finally know I had a *purpose* in life. One so simple, and so easy to achieve.
I wanted what Aunt Liz had.
***
It's my fortieth birthday today and I’m so fucking excited. For the last twenty-four years, I’ve dedicated myself to this moment; I’ve eaten exactly what I needed to, I’ve exercised just enough, but not too much, to maintain that perfect balance of marbling vs tenderness. I’ve relaxed and meditated to keep all those amazing flavours inside of me. I’ve researched all the greatest meats in the world, from prime Angus beef to A5 Wagyu. I really think I may have outdone myself.
I’m having my hair and makeup done at the local salon this afternoon, and I’m going to look so pretty; all prize piggy on show at the fair. I’m even going to have a big red ribbon in my hair, in memory of Aunt Liz.
Maybe there’ll be a cute boy I can snog in the wool shed, maybe there won’t – I don’t really care; because the most important, most certain thing is that I’m going to be the most delicious Long Pig in the history of our entire family.
I’m going to make everyone so damn happy, and I’m just so glad I can share my story with you all, instead of hiding it in a grubby book like poor Aunt Liz.
My only real disappointment? That you won’t get to taste me.
Reader, I have loved, loved my life. My Long Pork will be out of this world: once tasted, never, ever forgotten.

2024.05.21 08:38 maximalsimplicity Manager unapproved my break and said I need to resign if I don’t come in

Hello all,
I’m quite puzzled as you can imagine.
I asked my manager back in February to sort out a transfer for me as I’m a student and I’ll be moving back with my family over summer. She delayed the process a lot, and when April came, I went back, gave her a call, and told her I’ve done so.
She said that I would need to go and ask the stores myself as to whether they would take me, she said that this is how it works now under new policy, but didn’t tell me for 3 months.
I attempted and none of them had the hours to do so.
Note that I work just 12 hours a week, not the minimum of 16, but this is all part of my contract and has been approved by my store manager.
Here comes the interesting part.
I asked to take a lifestyle break, to which my manager asked her manager and she approved. This way, I’d be off for the summer break and then return after. The manager said it would all go into the system and that would be that.
A week later she contacted me saying that I’ve only been with the company for 9 months, and therefore, I’m not able to take a lifestyle break as it is minimum 2 years service required.
She said I would either need to come and do the shifts, or hand in notice.
Can someone provide a bit of advice on how to proceed here? I don’t see how a manager, even if she approved it incorrectly, can just rescind a break that she approved, and then say I would need to resign for not coming in? I’ve booked a few things over summer, so I’m not open to cancelling. Not to mention that my uni is about 200 miles from my family, so I will not be travelling to and fro 2 times a week to work there.
Is it not possible for the manager to approve unpaid leave in any case at their discretion?
Any advice or info is really appreciated.

Where is this puzzle image? Likely North-Rhine Westphalia or West Germany in the ‘80s.
Found this puzzle in a bag without the box at an elderly relatives. Now that we’ve done it, we’d love to know where it is. Other puzzles we found are or similar quality and were marked from the ‘80s. The family had quit a few teens/young adults at the time who did travel but location most likely to be as stated in title. Quality looks not great so likely not a massive tourist spot who would have better quality merch, but who knows - it was the 80s.

2024.05.21 07:30 vrid_in 8 crucial lessons from Jim Simons that can change your life and personal finance

224th issue of Vrid Newsletter is here.
Imagine a mathematician so brilliant that he cracked codes for the National Security Agency (NSA), revolutionised the world of academia, and then went on to become one of the most successful hedge fund managers in history.
Meet Jim Simons, a man whose life reads like a blend of a thrilling spy novel, an academic genius tale, and a financial success story.
Jim Simons is not your typical Wall Street titan. He started his career solving mathematical puzzles and teaching at prestigious universities. But it was his unexpected leap into the world of finance that truly set him apart.
Simons founded Renaissance Technologies, a hedge fund that uses complex mathematical models and algorithms to beat the market consistently. Under his leadership, Renaissance’s flagship Medallion Fund achieved returns so spectacular that they became legendary, averaging annual gains of over 62% from 1988 to 2021.
What makes Jim Simons' story so fascinating is not just his financial success, but the unconventional path he took to get there and the principles he followed along the way.
Unfortunately, he passed away on 10th May 2024.
So, join us as we delve into the extraordinary life of the late Jim Simons and uncover the invaluable lessons he has to offer. Whether you're an aspiring investor or a curious learner, the insights from Simons' life can guide you towards a path of success and fulfilment.

Lesson #1: Embrace the Power of Knowledge and Curiosity

Simons wasn't born with a silver spoon. In fact, his dad, a salesman, instilled in him the importance of "salesmanship," which in simpler terms means being able to explain complex things clearly. This focus on knowledge became Simons' superpower.
He aced math, dove deep into code-breaking during the Vietnam War, and eventually became a world-renowned mathematician.
Knowledge is king! Whether it's understanding basic personal finance concepts like compound interest or researching different investment options, the more you know, the better equipped you are to make informed decisions with your money.
Start small. Pick a personal finance topic that interests you and spend 15 minutes a day learning about it. There are a plethora of free online resources, books, and even podcasts in various languages to help you get started!

Lesson #2: Develop a System

Jim Simons didn’t achieve legendary status by relying on gut feelings or market whims. Instead, he developed a sophisticated, data-driven system that guided his investment decisions. This system was built on rigorous mathematical models and algorithms, allowing his hedge fund to predict and exploit market inefficiencies with remarkable accuracy.
You should develop a personal finance system that works for you. This could involve creating a budget, setting up automatic transfers for savings and investments, and diversifying your portfolio based on your risk tolerance and goals.
There's no one-size-fits-all system. Research different budgeting methods and investment strategies. Use online tools or consult a financial advisor to create a plan that automates your finances and takes the guesswork out of managing your money.
Our app Vrid can help you track your expenses, investments, and savings. The app can provide you with a clear picture of your financial health and help you make informed decisions. For instance, tracking your spending habits can reveal areas where you can cut costs and save more.

Lesson #3: Hire Smart, Delegate, and Get Out of the Way!

Simons wasn't the one writing the complex algorithms at Renaissance. He assembled a team of brainiacs – physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists – and built a system that used complex algorithms to identify patterns in the market.
He empowered them, gave them the freedom to experiment, and most importantly, trusted their judgement. This focus on building a strong team was a key ingredient in his success.
Now, when it comes to your personal finance journey, you don't have to be a one-man army. If you're overwhelmed with managing your investments, consider seeking professional advice from a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA).
Research and interview different RIAs before choosing one. Ensure they are qualified, understand your risk tolerance, and have a clear fee structure. Read here to check out the steps to find the best RIA for you.

2024.05.21 07:13 tab_rick Why is Countertop Thickness Important?

Why is Countertop Thickness Important?
You know, when it comes to countertops, thickness is kind of a big deal. A beefier countertop can handle all the kitchen chaos – from your knife skills to those steaming pots. It’s less likely to give in and crack when things get tough. And if you’re dreaming of those fancy edges you’ve seen in home mags, a thicker top is your ticket.
But it’s not just about thickness. The thickness can totally change the vibe of your space. Want to make a statement? Go thick and let that countertop shine. If you’re chasing a sleek, minimalist look, then slim it down. And if you ever decide to move, a solid countertop can be a sweet selling point. So, picking the right thickness? It’s not just about looks—it’s a smart move for your home’s worth too.

8 Tips for Choosing the Ideal Solid Surface Countertop Thickness

Picking the right countertop thickness? Sounds like a puzzle, right? I mean, what’s the usual thickness? And how does a solid surface stack up against natural stone? If these questions are buzzing in your head, you’re not alone. But don’t stress! I’ve got eight handy tips coming up to help you nail that decision and find the just-right thickness for your digs.

1: Available Thickness Options and How to Choose

When considering a solid surface countertop, one of the pivotal decisions is selecting the right thickness. Let’s break down the options to help you make an informed choice for your space:
Standard Thickness (1/2 inch or 12mm): Think of this as the classic choice. It’s adaptable, lightweight, and ideal for areas like bathroom vanities. If your countertop won’t face intense daily use, this option is both practical and often more budget-friendly.
Medium Thickness (3/4 inch or 20mm): This is the balanced choice, suitable for the majority of kitchens. It offers resilience for daily kitchen activities without overwhelming the space visually.
Thick Countertops (1 inch or 25mm and above): The robust option. Tailored for high-traffic areas requiring durability, it also brings an elevated, sophisticated aesthetic to your space.
Remember, the right thickness is a blend of functionality and aesthetics tailored to your specific needs.

2: Choose Thickness Based on Functional Intent

Alright, so you’re getting a new countertop, and you’re stuck on how thick it should be. The key is to think about what you’re actually going to use it for. Let’s break it down:
Light-Duty Areas (1/4 inch or 6mm):
Functional Intent: These are spaces that don’t see heavy use but still require a touch of elegance.
Ideal for: Backsplashes, wall panels, and decorative vertical applications. This thickness is more about aesthetics than heavy-duty function.
Moderate Use Areas (1/2 inch or 12mm):
Functional Intent: Suitable for areas that see regular but not heavy-duty use.
Ideal for: Bathroom vanities, home desks, or laundry room surfaces. They can handle occasional spills and weight but aren’t meant for heavy kitchenware or constant pounding.
Everyday Use Areas (3/4 inch or 20mm):
Functional Intent: Designed for spaces that see daily activities and need to be both durable and stylish.
Ideal for: Standard kitchen countertops, breakfast nooks, or home bars. They’re robust enough to handle the daily grind of cooking, chopping, and regular kitchen tasks.
High-Traffic and Heavy-Duty Areas (1 inch or 25mm):
Functional Intent: Meant for areas that see a lot of action, heavy items, or commercial use.
Ideal for: Busy family kitchens, commercial kitchens, or workspaces in restaurants. They’re built to withstand the challenges of a bustling environment.
Statement or Luxury Areas (11/2 inches or 38mm):
Functional Intent: Beyond functionality, these are also about making a bold design statement.
Ideal for: Luxury kitchen islands, high-end bars, or commercial spaces aiming for a luxe feel. The added thickness not only provides durability but also exudes opulence.
So, when you’re picking out your solid surface countertop, think about what you’ll use it for and how much abuse it’s going to take. Whether you’re going for style, function, or a bit of both, there’s a thickness that’s just right for you.

3: Correlation Between Thickness and Design

  • The Sleek Minimalist (1/4 inch or 6mm):
Design Vibe: Modern and simple. This thin profile shows contemporary elegance.
Perfect For: Modern homes with a simple design. It’s subtle, doesn’t dominate the space, and complements clean lines and neutral palettes.
  • The Everyday Classic (1/2 inch or 12mm):
Design Vibe: Versatile and timeless. It’s the kind of thickness that fits just about anywhere.
Perfect For: Traditional homes or spaces that blend the old with the new.
  • The Balanced Act (3/4 inch or 20mm):
Design Vibe: Modern and cozy. It’s got presence, but it’s not overpowering.
Perfect For: Those in-between spaces that aren’t super old-school but aren’t ultra-modern either.
  • The Bold Statement (1 inch or 25mm):
Design Vibe: Luxurious and commanding.
Perfect For: Spaces that aim for a touch of opulence. Think high-end homes, luxury condos, or any space that wants to exude richness.
  • The Grandeur (11/2 inches or 38mm):
Design Vibe: Grand and fancy.
Perfect For: Perfect for those plush villas or sky-high penthouses.
When picking a countertop, think about how you want your place to feel. Do you want it to feel cozy, fancy, or something in between? There is always a thickness that can meet your needs.

4: Durability of Different Thicknesses

It’s a general rule of thumb: the thicker the countertop, the more durable it is. Thicker countertops, especially those made of robust materials like quartzite, resist chipping, cracking, and other wear forms better than thinner ones. However, the material’s quality, such as solid surface countertops, is equally crucial. A high-quality 2 cm countertop might outlast a low-quality 3 cm one. It’s essential to balance thickness with material quality.

5: Budget is Also Part of the Consideration

Budget plays a significant role in any renovation or design project. Thicker countertops, especially those with custom edge designs like bullnose or half-bullnose, can be pricier. However, they might offer better longevity, translating to cost savings in the long run. It’s crucial to weigh the initial investment against the countertop’s lifespan and the value it adds to your space.

6: Edge Styles Should Fit With the Countertop

1/4 inch (6mm) Pencil, Beveled
1/2 inch (12mm) Pencil, Beveled, Bullnose, Waterfall
3/4 inch (20mm) Eased, Bullnose, Beveled, Ogee, Waterfall, Mitered
1 inch (25mm) Eased, Bullnose, Beveled, Ogee, Waterfall, Mitered, Dupont, Chiseled
1 1/2 inches (38mm) Eased, Bullnose, Beveled, Ogee, Waterfall, Mitered, Dupont, Chiseled, Cove, Stair Tread, Marine Edge

7: Easy Installation and Light Weight

If you want a countertop that’s easy to install, go for a thinner solid surface option, around 1/4 inch thick. They’re lightweight and hassle-free during the installation process. Thinner countertops may not be as durable as thicker ones, but you can still achieve a thicker appearance by adding edge details. Just consult a professional to find the best fit for you.

8: Easy to Maintain

Now, let’s talk about maintenance. Solid surface countertops are a breeze to maintain. Here’s why:
They’re stain-resistant, so spills won’t create stubborn marks.
With no cracks or gaps, cleaning is simple, and crumbs and dirt won’t hide anywhere.
All you need is a damp cloth and mild soap for easy cleaning; no need for fancy or harsh chemicals.
If scratches or burns happen, many can be buffed out, and professional refinishing is available for more serious damage.
You don’t have to worry about using regular household cleaners; these countertops can handle them without harm.
In short, solid surface countertops are a dream to maintain. They resist stains, are easy to clean, fixable, and can withstand regular cleaning routines without worry. So, enjoy your beautiful countertops with peace of mind and less hassle.

Conclusion

Searching for the perfect countertop is like putting together a puzzle, where style, practicality, and budget all need to fit together. But fear not, with a little guidance, anyone can find a countertop that not only looks amazing but also stands the test of time. It’s all about finding that sweet spot where beauty meets functionality.

2024.05.21 06:00 Nanaco7 Mother in law frustrates and irritates me even though she is a nice person, advice from other daughter in laws

Dear Reddit community,
I have a mother in law situation, I would love some advice if you have felt similar to me.
I have also made it all the worse by how I have acted, I'm not very good at hiding my feelings. She is actually a nice lady, although comments have been made by her own family members which I'll discuss below, I will discuss what frustrates me first and add context. It is a long read I am a little lost with this situation and it isn't going to be ongoing unfortunately.
My mother in law, is retired now, and comes from abroad, she tends to stay for a long time, last time was 1 month. Unfortunately she had to come alone, even though she had planned to come with my husband's aunt, which would have kept her company but she wasn't able to come. We were very busy with a renovation project and I felt bad that she wasn't being entertained. While also frustrated that she'd decide to come for a time we are both always busy during, albeit one of the most beautiful times of the year. She also refused to drive, (or travel by herself elsewhere) but then complained that the rural bus took such a long time, even though she was welcome to use our car while we we working.
This time she has come with her "friend" as she keeps telling our friends in this area, assuming he is a her partner, but that's also something which I don't have the capcity to pry about and can see from her previous relationships and being single as an older woman for a long timer, perhaps this is a confusing situation for her, I'm not sure. Her "friend" is very pleasant and nice, I'm glad she has a nice companion.
She has her own property nearby, so we can at least have our own privacy and hers too. While she is away we manage her house to be rented for the short term for tourists.
We live in a seasonal area, that is busy for short bursts and then quiet for months. So it's beautiful area to enjoy, so people always come and when they do they are on holiday but this is where we live.
I find everything MIL says annoying, frustrating and I don't know why but I just can't stand being around my MIL. She will just ask question after question, which my husband patiently answers. Meanwhile none of the replies seem to go in and aren't retained. I understand where we live is abroad for her, but she comes visit and doesn't seem to retain much of how things are here, I guess it's so foreign, its a big cultural difference to her and her home comforts. While she couldn't see us during the pandemic, she doesn't seem so old that she should have forgotten so many details.
The question asking I find infuriating which I just find really like prying, a friend told me it's a bid for connection, but it doesn't come that way to me. I did get frustrated last year and said I don't have the capacity for all her questions, and of course it offended her, yet has retained none of this visiting us again a few months later.
I just stay silent when we had to finally all hang out with my MIL, my husband and her "friend" companion man person. Because otherwise what I say comes out nasty and the annoyed-ness, contemptuousness isn't well hidden. Yes it is nasty of me I understand that, but I just don't know what to do about how I feel and I can't hide it.
She has finally realised this, I guess she was ignoring it, and she is a non confrontational person like my husband, which I am not, I don't want to make it worse by shouting at her. So has said she doesn't want me around. Which I'm glad, because the pretense of trying to seem like I like or enjoy her company was quite obvious that I didn't enjoy a minute of it. But I've felt I must hang out with my MIL for my husband's sake, which caused more arguments between my husband and I, in the end.
She also tends to act perhaps very soft, gentle, dithering by asking for advice, but Never taking it on, so it just feels like she's just wasting your time. In order to just then let you know what she has decided instead, then why ask for advice, make up your own mind instead, who cares if the decision is right or not, it seems like this "softness" is somewhat passive aggressive and manipulative.
My husband told me my sister in law has said that when she has visited her, she has been really fretting about making decisions, and asking for advice but not particularly interested of taking that on.
This is unfortunately this situation is putting my husband in the middle and it is causing him a lot of stress and grief.
I no longer go to his mother and he is responsible for his mother and the communication with her. Which has been a lot better on this visit, as she has misunderstood what I've messaged her on her last visit.
She's already discussing visiting us next year and we would like to make plans but it makes it feel like we can't because she has simply decided what she'll do and just come. He has told her that we may not be here and we are now realising that if she is just simply putting herself first, we must do so for ourselves as a couple too.
Another thing which I just find puzzling. Unless you're in our area to ski or hike, there isn't really much else to do where we live, she does neither activity. So why not spend that time visiting to see more of the country and travel? Yet she doesn't want to spend money. Which is a scarcity mindset of her own and probably due to saving pennies from her pension, but also you only live once and are only going to keep getting older and more tired. I might reiterate she is middle class but certainly not super poor, as she paid a lot of money for her flight to get here, it isn't cheap.
I am currently going through a bit of a lonely and hard season, my husband and I both feel a little trapped by our responsibilities. I won't go into more details but we are working through this, lots of arguments and it's been hard. While as my MIL hasn't had any long term relationships, I'm not super keen to have her involved or ask for advice in regards to our relationship, she won't even call this guy whose visiting with her right now, her boyfriend.
The interesting part about her long visits, which I know I should feel grateful for but I am not, as she came from very far away to be visiting my husband. Is that he left home at about 16 years old, she got him out of the rural area they are from as he had made some friends who were bad influences and he is glad that he moved away to study at such a young age and it made him who he is today.
So really since he has been a very young man, he hasn't spent much time for more than days with his mother.
He would tell me that she would grill him, as he used to smoke and very rightly didn't approve, so he'd avoid her and his dad (they were separated) lived nearby although he is a difficult narcissist, probably due to his narcissism he'd leave my husband alone. But we all self medicate from our own troubles and that's been a choice he has made, I also don't approve as I'd prefer him sober, but anxiety can be crippling for us all and we all cope in our own ways (I am online and on my phone too much for example).
As I've mentioned I am not good at keeping my feelings, I tend to prefer to discuss something which annoys me but as you know, that isn't exactly the most kind way to act in life. While also as it is my MIL, unlike my own mother, I can't make comments without it upsetting her or causing further issues.
As she is a kind person, I understand that she is trying to connect with me. I must also mention that my mother is asian (not indian asian), so she pretty much lets me be, leaves me alone and yes I'd love for her to care more, but that's not her love language, she tends to buy things and gift giving is how she shows love.
I understand that it is unfair to compare her to my own mother, but inevitably I am doing so.
I have blocked my MIL on my social media, because she would always just be looking to see what I'm up to, she isn't a customer, which is mainly what my instagram was originally for and I find it nosey. This may seem harsh, but I wasn't comfortable with her comments, or knowing things about me, to me this was setting a firm boundary.
I asked my husband's brother's wife, for advice, she has also mentioned that she finds our MIL frustrating and gives unwarranted advice, as she is a step mother of her granddaughters it is a different situation there. It has also made me realise it is not just me that finds her difficult. That also perhaps the long isolation during the pandemic made her behaviour a little worse? With more free time from being retired and so much time alone during this period, which I do feel simpathetic for.
Any advice apppreciated, I do think I'm being a little too hard on her, but I cannot help this feeling of frustration and annoyance. What is your advice, how can I get on with her and feel less annoyed?

2024.05.21 05:47 pliskin42 Thoughts on this world explination? I was planning on having it for some players at a session zero before the start working out their characters. Trying to gauge if it conveys enough info and what I am going for.

Ionaxus: A World of Stolen Youth
Is it really kidnapping if it happened to thousands of people at once? Of course that question might also assume that there was some sort of intelligence behind The Phasing. Such questions were little comfort to the many peoples of the Forgotten Realms who suddenly awoke one day in in the unknown expanses of a land which would come to be called Ionaxus. Many who experienced the catastrophe have made a strong case that there must have been a greater being of some kind who caused it. On the face there was plenty of randomness in those who were phased: species, heritage, sex, creed, little or no connection could be found in the standard demographics. However, one notable exception became obvious to those paying attention---those of advanced years. Only those in the youthful prime of their life were phased; none who were growing beyond middling years for their kind found themselves in Ionaxus. As if they were intentionally left behind.
Those first days after The Phasing were dark times. For most a normal life was hard enough, but suddenly finding themselves without tools, weapons, family, and only each other for allies the new Population of Ionaxus were immediately struggling for survival. What was worse, with little in the way or resources, much of the institutional and advanced knowledge was gone with the elders. There were plenty of skilled journyfolk in a wide range of trades and studies, but no longer were there any masters of their crafts to pass information along. Advanced building techniques, agriculture, and weapons technology were near impossible to recreate --- much less arcane secrets like teleportation or plane shifting. The population was stuck. Struggle and strife were the norm; soon those who found themselves at odds with the group, or who otherwise wished to cloister and establish their kind, spread out and traveled to locations to stake their claims.
Of course Those Where Were Phased wondered and called to their gods during their dire circumstances. Soon it became clear to most that their prayers were going unanswered. The gods of their old world, of Toril, seemingly have forgotten them in this realm. Nature abhors a vacuum, and so do folks in need of religion. Soon the worship of new gods, ones who blessed and aided their followers came into vogue. Only the most staunch in their faith’s from the old world maintained their sects. Generally their children, and children’s children opted for the more pragmatic choice.
250 years later advancement has been at a crawl. Populations in many localities have just now started to really expand and develop.. With this expansion and development the need to strike at opportunities has grown as well. Only the longest lived species have members of Those Who Were Phased. While other folk have had several generations, and those who were phased might be the stuff of legend to them now. Some settlements have developed and grown into stable kingdoms and governments. Others stay balanced on the knife’s edge for their survival and resources. Thankfully, those who seek opportunity have plenty of untamed frontier of all kinds and varieties to explore in the hopes of fame and fortune. Those who have undergone such journeys and came back have brought with them puzzling reports. Scattered in many places are ruins from long dead civilizations who lived here before and who seemingly vanished or died out at different times.
Ionaxus is a land of mystery and forgotten history. Few who live there now could tell you much about past events. In many senses the current population is just beginning to find themselves as peoples apart from their ancestors in the old forgotten realms. Thus this world is one of comparatively low technology and low to moderate magic. (think early middle ages just after the fall of the roman empire.) Only time will tell what will remain with the various folk, what will fade to legend, and what will be lost to time. Perhaps more importantly, no one knows what is on the horizon for the descendants of Those Who Were Phased, nor what they will reclaim, or develop unto themselves. What characters would come forth from such a place?
