2024.05.21 16:39 TheeMiniCorndog Best "ROI" Build/Platform Question/Discussion

*Note* This is not to start a "this car is bad/this car is good" argument. I'm merely looking at the economics of a drag build and trying to be as efficient with my money as possible.
That said, is there any particular reason to build specific chassis/platforms that's more expensive besides "variety is the spice of life"?
Context: I have a built, supercharged LS3 C6 whose drivetrain is completely aftermarket. At a certain capacity, though, I think that the same parts in any "chassis" would yield comparable results. Translation: If I put 20k in parts into a stock car whose book value is 50k (car A), I have a 70k capital investment. Conversely, if I put 20k into a stock car whose book value is 10k (car B), now I have only 30k invested and could be essentially as quick. This may be oversimplifying things dramatically, but if I can free up money and have a comparable experience, why not? Furthermore, what are some good suggestions and things to avoid while trying to be so budget focused? Thanks!
Lastly, and this might be a HUGE caveat: I'm ignoring buying a faster stock car for the moment. Why? I'm trying to free up some capital. Modifications rarely have much resale value, and labor for mods (if subletted) is almost always a sunk cost. As such, it seems logical to just buy a faster stock car that will hold its value. Problem with that is that if you spend more money in a stock car, now you are investing more capital. Money you will have better odds of recapturing at time of sale, but still more held captive
TL:DR: Why not build a cheap/beat up platform rather than a higher end exotic? If performance is the same, objectively, the only difference between a mint, twin turbo Lamborghini and a turbo 200k, rebuilt title SN95/f-body is cost.
Again, this isn't a slight towards expensive platforms. They certainly can be worth their weight in gold in coolness and appeal of the public.

Emmerson Gray felt slip case
Just came today. This is navy. Just enough padding to keep it from being abraded in my bag while not adding bulk when I’m reading. Exactly what I wanted! Seems well made and fairly tight fit.

2024.05.21 16:31 bagelbelly Selling a Car on FB Marketplace and numerous dealerships have messaged me

I've listed a 2021 Hyundai Palisade for sale, and I've had at least 10 dealerships from my state and surrounding states message me asking for the vin.
Not long after sending them the vin, they send me an offer and offer to come pick up the car. The most recent dealership offer was an acceptable offer. He made it seem very simple.
The dealership is 2 hours away. He will have us meet a dealership representative at a Wells Fargo Bank local to me. We will go in the bank, I will receive X amount of dollars, and then I sign the bill of sale. Then they have their own transportation pick up the car and haul it away.
It seems legit, but it also seems like there's a catch. I've researched the dealership and the "acquisition specialist" that I've been communicating with.
Is this a familiar process to any of you all? Anything funky to expect from the dealership? Anything to look out for?
Thanks in advance.

2024.05.21 16:31 McParat Insurance release form

Just received a release form from an insurance company for some property damage that happened to my front yard due to a car accident. The language states: “For and in consideration of the payment to (me) of the total sum of $xxx, receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, …”
I have not received any check or payment yet and the agent stated that they will send me the check after I sign the release form (which prevents me from going after them for more damages/money later on). The fact that I have to acknowledge receipt of money that I haven’t received yet and won’t receive until after I sign seems a bit suspect.
Is this standard practice? I’m worried that if I sign this that they may never send me anything.
Thanks in advance.

2024.05.21 16:31 Due_Push9959 No Time of Sale Report

I flew from Colorado to Texas to purchase my Bolt. The dealership told me they could not apply the federal tax credit at point of sale but I could apply the credit to my 2024 taxes. This looked legit from what I can see online. In my excitement about my new car and desire to get on the road for my 16+ hr drive home I did not realize they didn't give me the point of sale report. I've been asking for it since I arrived home and realized they didn't provide it but now it is over 2 weeks later and the salesman barely replies to my calls and emails and just keeps saying he is waiting to hear from finance. I see instructions on IRS.gov about how to file if you don't have a copy of the time of sale report but I suspect the dealership didn't even report the sale. Any recommendations on what I should do now?

2024.05.21 16:30 woogeroo Specialized concept stores & shoe stock

I’ve got to say I’m amazed how bad the shopping experience is at the Specialized Concept store near me. Combined with the general problems with stock of shoes in the UK, it was a bizarre experience when I visited one recently.
That combined with Specialized not even offering wide fit shoes in the UK is just bafflingly annoying.
Has anyone had a good experience with a Specialized concept store somewhere in the UK? Are there even any decent bike shops anywheee in the country trying to that actually have stock of a range of brands & sizes to try on? helmets, shoes, kit are all a problem.

2024.05.21 16:28 DangerShart Is it game over for European legacy manufacturers?

I have been following the development of EVs in China for a few years.
Just watched this video about the new Xiaomi car.
TLDW 664bhp, 0-60 in under 3 seconds, 400 mile range, and can add 300 miles in under 20 minutes.
All for under £33k
Now obviously the price will be a lot more if it ever comes to Europe but the presenter seems to think there is nothing from the legacy manufacturers that can compete and I am struggling to disagree.
I expect a lot of people will dismiss Chinese cars for reasons and the badge has a lot of value in the UK but in the rest of Europe they all drive Dacias anyway so I don't think this is as important.

2024.05.21 16:26 PretendReason7905 SA Car Thief Details.

Since a few friends and I have been watching and tracking car thefts lately and since Bexar County court system is dropping most cases that aren't violent or a murder, it's time to fill y'all in on the fun stuff.
If you have a stolen vehicle, I deeply implore you to check Wingate Avenue in the city. This is the area where vehicles are ending up and the dude who's actually been stealing numerous vehicles is on the street living in the most beautiful house you can imagine.
The crazy thing is that this dude, despite having stolen multiple vehicles, keeps getting released back into the public. He has a home burglary charge where he was physically caught breaking into someone's home that was dropped. He was charged and found again with cocaine on him, but that was dropped. He has had multiple stolen vehicle reports with his DNA and literal personal items found in the vehicles but the police are doing nothing about it. This dude works for a cable company and will literally leave his receipts with his name on them IN the stolen vehicles. These receipts have his name AND his id number because they're from when he goes in to sell stolen copper for excess cables. That's how stupid this guy is, but he keeps getting released. This is y'all's San Antonio car thief.
WILD that mods removed this post before but it's been slightly edited now. 🤔

2024.05.21 16:25 cold_mountain28 What happened to today’s Honda

My first car was a Honda accord I bought 5 years ago. Although it was a 4 years old used car with almost 100k miles, the salespeople at the dealership were patiently walking me through the car, answering all my questions and accompanying me to the test drive, about 10k USD out of the door also a good deal within my budget at the time. Reliable, beautiful car never had any problems.
Because of my good experience with Honda, I never hesitate to recommend Honda to my friends who are looking for a new car. Two separate cases, I’m with them in two different Honda dealerships, equally terrible experience. One dealership makes 21k CRV almost 29K OTD with extended warranties and anti theft devices, changes sales person in the middle after I tell them we are not paying for what we don’t need, implying me to shut up if I’m not the one who’s buying the car. Another dealership has 2020 civic for 25k, became angry after test drive my friend told them he will consider it but need to test drive other options as well “Don’t test drive it if you are not buying it”. Additionally, both 1.5t engine feels louder than my 2.4L engine.
One of my friends eventually got Mazda cx5, with lower price and better dealership experience, another got same year certified BMW 330i for about same price as the civic.
Is that because of the changes after covid or differences between the states (I got mine from NY, both recent experiences are in the CA)?

2024.05.21 16:21 hawkeyedre Vredestein Hitrac vs Continental Control Contact

I drive a 2018 Honda Civic and am looking for new tires. I'm not planning on keeping my car for more than a few years so not trying to spend a lot of money. I'm trying to decide between the Vredestein Hitrac and Continental Control Contact Tour All Season Tires. Found sales on each where they're $450-$470 before taxes and installation. I live in Iowa where we get snow and ice. Never had snow tires and never had any problems, so I'm looking for all season tires that do okay in the snow. I also drive a lot on the highway commuting to work. Any recommendations?
