Russian expession
"Аппетит приходит во время еды" is a Russian proverb that translates to "appetite comes with eating" or "appetite comes while eating" in English. This proverb suggests that sometimes you may not feel hungry initially, but as you start eating, your appetite increases. It's often used to encourage someone to start a task or activity even if they're not initially motivated, as once they begin, their interest or enthusiasm may grow.

2024.05.21 07:26 tourdecrate Why are there no social worker focused novels?

Not sure what the proper flair for this should be. But yeah. There’s thousands of novels about cops and criminal lawyers, which I suppose makes sense as they’re necessary for a crime thriller or mystery novel. There’s also tons of authors who write novels with doctors or pathologists as the protagonist. John Grisham somehow made civil law thrilling. There’s novels featuring all kinds of soldiers, mercenaries, and rebels. I’ve seen books starring politicians, teachers, librarians, , corporate execs, IT specialists, park rangers, sex workers, NGO workers, journalists, artists, museum curators, scientists, and psychologists among others.
Why are there practically no novels by or about social workers? Especially that can be considered bestsellers? I feel like there’s so many ways a social worker protag could make for a compelling plot. With all the roles social workers play, there’s plenty of territory for plots and settings. Also, since social workers are so often in solitary opposition to large or powerful systems, it would make for a very natural “Cassandra Truth” or “vs the world” dynamic as a source of conflict. I could see a mystery, drama, or thriller work with a social worker as the main character.
The other thing I’ve noticed is that on the rare occasion that a social worker is depicted in fiction or other media, they aren’t ever really shown “doing” social work. Like when you read John Grisham, he painstakingly walks you through the briefs, the conferences, the legal strategy, and the case law research the characters do between the plot threads. Robin Cook practically teaches a med school class in his novels, discussing surgical procedures, pharmacology, and differential diagnosis in detail. Books with Wall Street protagonists will spend two chapters explaining how the protagonists goes about shorting a stock or in dialogue with a broker. When there’s a social worker in fiction, the only way you know the character’s a social worker is that someone says they’re a social worker or they introduce themselves as one. Sometimes it’s never brought up again. Sometimes the character is shown doing their job, but it’s heavily simplified. There’s no detailed case management shown, no motivational interviewing happening, no case formulation, no documentation, no dialogue from therapy sessions or groups or supervision. I put down one book because the social worker protagonist kept referring to his client as a druggie, hopeless, a lost cause, and a waste of resources and breaking confidentiality discussing the details of the minor client’s life to the county sheriff who came out on a home visit with him. Is it too much to ask to have a social worker who is both a relatable protagonist and thinks and behaves like a social worker?

2024.05.21 05:19 savantandscholar1 Histrionic Personality Disorder and narcissism

A nice private casual family vacation, but not for Mallory Ervin. In the videos you notice her family is all casual laughing and just there to have fun, but Mallory had to make sure it's a fashion show with her obscene $20,000 vacation wardrobe. During her little attention seeking ootd skit, she was quick to mention her mother's shoes were Gucci, even though the mom didn't show her shoes. LOL She literally dresses like a circus clown in those tacky La Vie Style house dresses, that cost about $1000 each. She pairs them with clunky hooker shoes because she's 5 feet tall. Everything about this woman is pure narcissistic behavior and attention seeking down to her neon wardrobe. I can't stand this woman, but her cult followers are worse. I don't understand how they fall for her whole scheme. She's a theater major for fck sake. She does anything for attention and then profits off of it. A makeup YouTuber, reality tv star, an author writing about her fake addiction, selling cheap graphic tees for her scam motivational speaker line "living fully" and now selling cheap china pjs for $100 to her same gullible audience. It's actually sad how people fall for this. What's worse is she pretends she's a christian. She might want to read the part of the bible about greed and vanity. She's such a good Catholic she didn't even know we don't eat meat during lent. There's always going to be con-artists in the world and gullible losers that fall for it.

2024.05.21 05:12 Bupefiend AA Speaker tape recommendations?

I was introduced to an AA speaker tape a few years ago that made an incredible impact on my recovery. I've probably listened to hundreds of hours worth of this guy's recordings (Bob D from Las Vegas, Nevada fwiw). My understanding, perception, willingness, open mindedness, how I think about people/the world, and my overall hope/belief in there being a better way has been solidified with the help of these tapes, but also through in-person meetings and applying the actions/principles of the 12 steps. I still have a long way to go, but I at least KNOW the path to take.
I have someone in my life that I care very deeply for but have been struggling to help in the way she needs. She is sober but pretty discontent, unfulfilled, overwhelmed, and irritable a lot of the time. She has more sober time than me (by quite a bit) and doesn't react well when I try to make motivating, AA related suggestions, so I've been trying to think of other ways to plant the seed of willingness/desire/hope/anything. (I know this isn't something that can be forced on anyone. That's not my intention. This person has spent time in AA before, has had a good experience , and is only recently drifting away due to work/young kids). I've tried my best to talk to her about all this in a non judgmental, understanding way but she gets defensive when I do. I don't think she's in a place where she can receive this message from me. It occurred to me that maybe she would have a similar experience with speaker tapes that I've had- if I were to find some good ones. The biggest reason, she claims, for why she doesn't attend AA meetings is that she simply doesn't have the time. She does commute to/from work and spends at least 10 hours in the car every week though. I'd love to compile a list of a few specific speakers that could potentially resonate with her. I have a couple from Bob D I was going to send her way, but am unfamiliar with pretty much anyone else. Would appreciate any suggestions- especially speakers that a mid 30s, agnostically inclined, semi outsider, single mom could connect to.
If anyone is interested I'll plug my favorite tapes. I have a Playlist on Spotify as well as youtube links. Favorite topics include: surrender, fear, resentment, change in perception, drastic 180 degree stories of recovery

2024.05.21 03:38 The-Persistent-Fox [M4ApF] [I’m a furry!] I really need partners!

Yip-Yap-Howdy, y’all!
My name’s Audely! I’m an 18 year old maroon furred fox in Texas! I’m in need of a literate, friendly, and fun partner willing to experiment, write, and hang out with!
I’m fairly experienced, and would consider myself highly-literate to novella in terms of literacy.
Now, I’ll make this little introduction short:
I request that my partner participates, shares ideas with me, actually talks, and isn’t afraid to say “no” to something. For me, I believe it’s crucial to have a happy partner, and will treat you wonderfully! I’m friendly, but if my chatter’s bothersome to ya, please tell me and I’ll shut my muzzle up and focus on the story.
With that being said, if you wanna divert from a story we’re doing, I’ll be happy to hear ya out on the idea! Worst I can say is “no,” but I usually try to make a “compromise” if I’m uncomfortable to do something with ya, whether it be graying out the area I don’t wanna do, or even biting the bullet and going straight into it, I’ll do my best to serve.
The only catch is that I stay as my fox, Audely - who I’ll introduce ya to in private.
I’m interested in military / post apocalyptic plots sets in the near future and am a sucker for enemies to lovers with a bit of romance. Down below, I have a plot written out for us if you’d like to read:
Roleplay: “Rally ‘Round the Flag”
Thunder booms over the desolate concrete jungle of New York City. Loosely standing rubble and structures were mostly all that was left, including a severely damaged Empire State Building that loomed eerily in the hazy distance. A cold, wet female sat watch in her perch overlooking a road. Mortar holes peppered the concrete and old, rusted barbed wire snaked across the middle of the street, connecting to different strong points to hold off a long-lost last defense from years prior. There were multiple destroyed armored vehicles parked in their final destination - some more damaged than others. It was hard to imagine that just 16 years prior, it wasn’t like this… But she still had faith in her government. After all, it is what restored peace.
The NDG - or better known as the “New Democratic Government of America” - came into power in February of 2020. It was ran and organized by General Robert A. Frost. At the time, he was a respected and highly intelligent 33 year old man who was not only an excellent motivational speaker, but the man who promised to restore the United States to its beauty - to revive a righteous, just, and prosperous nation. However, shortly after he brought this new policy into effect, it didn’t take long for him and his party to show their true, wicked colors. However, his rigor in his speeches and passion entranced many people, which kept his motives unharmed and continued with little resistance until a civil war broke out just a month after. However, Frost had managed to deteriorate every single state’s government at such a staggering rate that the little bit of resistance that showed was crushed. From his success and jaw-dropping speed in completely taking control, followers of the NDG fell in love with Frost, which cemented his unyielding leadership in this “New United States of America.”
Of course, he couldn’t wipe out everyone who disagreed, and many were disgusted and hated him to hell and back, but those who were open about it were simply, “Culled so that Progression of Restoring the Nation remained undisturbed.”
Audely Clearwater, a 19 year old fox from Texas, was an HVT to Frost - actually on his most-wanted list. The young, maroon furred fox was born in Texas shortly before the wake of the NDG, and had little memory of the United States or his parents prior to the takeover. His mother, a 24 year old woman, and his father, a 26 year old man who was mutated into a fox in a project named “Project Tail Wag,” were 2 of hundreds of thousands murdered by Frost. They exchanged their lives for Audely’s sake, sending him to live with family friends all across East and Central Texas. When Audely turned 13, he ran away after NDG forces surrounded his caregivers’ ranch in order to “bring youth under the wing of the NDG.” He barely escaped, and went into hiding until he turned 16. Throughout that time, Audely learned how to flee, beg, and fight to escape capture after picking up stealing and robbery to survive. However, he was caught by a group of officers of the State of Texas Army & Marine Corps. Forced to be taken under their wing after begging to not go to jail, he was trained extensively for the inevitable “some day, when we strike back.” And, it turned out, it would happen just a year later. He saw extensive combat, and even as a young and inexperienced soldier, Audely had gained a reputation as an excellent soldier.
Frost did not like this. He wanted Audely’s hide. Especially for his rarity as an anthro. He needed the fox to be exterminated.
. . .
2 years had passed since then, and Audely was still on the loose. At 19 years old, he became an icon for the effort to push back. Frost was furious and put a bounty out for his capture:
“Immediate promotion and Officer School scholarship for next 3 generations of your family for FREE for the capture of Audely Clearwater.”
And, there sat the woman. She had created herself to be an elite soldier of the NDG… and she was one of Frost’s top officers he had. She answered directly to him. The thought of fame and glory nearly made her smile. The NDG was close to catching him after a few weeks of tracking him and his squad down in NDG-controlled Maine and New York. They managed to kill his squad, but he once again miraculously escaped… for now.
If the intel was correct, then Audely should be within 5 miles of her position at this exact moment. She felt nervous, though…
Would she be able to finally clamp his mouth shut, and his limps bound for all to see, the Terrorist finally stopped and morale shattered for the resistance forces? Or, would the last thing she see be his snarl before he ultimately takes her life, marking yet another death for the NDG by the actions of Audely?
If you think this plot’s gonna suit ya, or if ya wanna try me out as a partner, please send a DM or comment for my Discord info!
With Southern Charm, kisses and tail wags -
Love, Audely

2024.05.21 02:30 ctmred The Killing of Roger Fortson

The Killing of Roger Forsten
(Am hoping this is an unlocked link)
This is another *Read the Whole Thing* from JVL examining the murder of Airman Roger Forsten by an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Deputy. The one observation I've been talking with friends about is this one: "Guns aren’t really about guns. They’re about the culture war." This is absolutely spot on -- because the proliferation of guns are about convincing yourself you are protected against the people you are told to fear, and about the chaos. The chaos is on purpose and why the GOP won't help fix this problem. You are meant to pay attention to lots of random shootings and you are meant to know that no one will save you or your kids. The fear and the cynicism is again what the GOP wants for you.
These officers shooting first and asking questions later are the direct stand-ins for the more careless folks who invest in guns as their protection. They imagine that they will also be able to shoot first, because the people asking questions later will understand every bit of the motivation to shoot. Especially if it is utterly haphazard. They expect that they will be protected by being fearful of the "right" people.

2024.05.20 22:52 Manifestopheles Arvanite Poetry

Mirëmbrema and greetings from Greece, vëllezër. I hope it's ok if I post this here, as I'm not trying to advertise anything commercial, but I would like to point your attention to my latest project: the past year I've finally started doing research into my Arvanite heritage. While my relatives are all mostly convinced we have no relation with the Arvanites, because our grandfather claims that his grandfather changed his name to "Arvanitis" and hence they don't consider it an indication of our origin.
The truth, however, is that my great-great-grandfather's original name, "Kakissis" was even more incriminating, as it's clearly an Arvanite name referring either to the name Kakia (which is an Arvanite nickname for Paraskevi, i.e. it would refer to the children of Kakja), or, maybe ka kishë (has a church, indicating that they didn't want to convert to either Islam or maybe Catholicism, as my family comes from Southwest Morea, so most likely descend from Dredh/Arbëresh stock who fled Italy in the Middle Ages to avoid becoming Catholic). Regardless, all this information pushed me to do my research and try to learn the language on my own. Finding people to teach you Arvanitika is impossible in Greece, as even most native speakers only speak it partially), but, fortunately, there are a few books available (although you won't believe the hoops I had to jump to even get my hands on them), and with the help of modern Albanian textbooks and dictionaries I've actually been making a lot of progress, I think. Nowhere near being able to speak it reliably, but I can at least translate and form coherent sentences in writing, which leads me to the topic of today.
As a way to practice the things I've been learning I've decided to start writing poetry again (I used to write extensively almost a decade ago before stopping) but this time in Arvanitika. I've started simple, writing haiku, senryu (basically a haiku, but not focused on scenery so much as human interaction and/or commentary etc.) and tanka (another japanese form similar to haiku but extended by two more verses), but have already made a major discovery in what could become a new, Arvanite form of poetry, called Ethëna (a saying, basically). Ethëna seems to have been a major social activity among Arvanite communities, by which one would invent a little verse or proverb based on some experience or insight and share it among their peers. In terms of poetry it's still something I'm developing, and, while not all my ideas are groundbreaking by any stretch, I would say it mostly combines attributes of an aphorism with epigrammatic poetry, often with a healthy dose of satire.
Either way, I feel this is probably the most significant journey I've embarked upon, solely motivated by a desire to preserve and, better yet, hopefully enrich a language which has languished in neglect for far too long -- as well as to master it for myself. For example, I wrote a poem about the word faleminderit, inspired by the fact that Arvanitika has no official word for "thank you", while both falem and nderi exist in our vocabulary. So I'm constantly on the lookout for words the Arvanites may have known, either from Albanian, Latin or Medieval Greek, the latter of which probably had the most significant influence on Arvanitika as we know it today, as all the dictionaries available in Arvanitika are woefully incomplete.
So anyway, if anyone's interested, please check out the following link: https://gjuhaezogut.wordpress.com/
I'd love to hear any and all of your feedback, especially since I'm not a native speaker. Faleminderit.

2024.05.20 21:46 TheKingsPeace Evangelical men and their wives?

There are stories of evangelical men being terrible husbands. Of being abusive and treating their wives like a servant.
I don’t think that’s the majority of devout Christian men though. And the huge majority of pastors, motivational speakers seem to value having a good marriage or treating their wife like a “ Queen.”
Whenever a pastor mentions their wife, they always say how stunningly beautiful she is, or what a knock out she is. In fairness their wives seem to put s lot of attention to their appearance, and seem to care about being a good wife.
They seem caring but deeply patronizing and domineering too. Like they love their wives, but mostly as a subservient helpmate and not a life partner or even friend.
Does anyone have insight to this? What’s up with the Christian view of marriage?

2024.05.20 21:39 Ruskulnikov Why did some young Irish men fight for the British Army in WW2 and how common was this?

Apologies if this is not a suitable post for here and I’ve no desire to rake up any contentious politics/history just for the sake of it!
I’m from England, but three of my grandparents were from Ireland and this is something I’ve found interesting from reading into our family history. My dad’s mother’s family were Catholics from rural county Monaghan and a couple of her brothers somehow ended up fighting in the British army in WW2. The details I have on this from my family are scarce but one of her brothers apparently crossed the border to the north and lied about his age in order to enlist (he must only have been 15 when he joined, but his age is recorded as a couple of years older on the army records I found). He was killed in France whilst still a teenager.
I’ve always wondered what his motivation for this was and I’m wondering if this was in any way common during the Second World War? Did many Irish men do similar and, if so, what compelled them? Money? Secure employment? The prospect of leaving home?
I know that the British Army used to aggressively attempt to recruit Irish soldiers in WW1 but was this still happening at all by WW2?
Any info/ suggestions would be very welcome and apologies if I’m being historically ignorant!

2024.05.20 21:38 HRJafael 3 vying for 2 School Committee seats in Montague

https://archive.is/daXVh
All but one of the races on the ballot for Tuesday’s town election are uncontested, with three candidates competing for two open seats with three-year terms on the Gill-Montague Regional School District School Committee.
Montague voters can cast their ballots from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at their respective polling places: the Montague Center Fire Station for Precinct 1, Franklin County Technical School for Precincts 2, 3, 4 and 6, and the Gill-Montague Senior Center for Precinct 5. School Committee incumbents Lori-Lee Adams and Carol Jacobs are both seeking reelection to another three-year term, while Montague resident Scott Hyman is challenging them for one of the two available committee seats.
Lori-Lee Adams
The committee appointed Adams, an Air Force veteran with roughly 20 years of experience in education, out of three finalists to fill a vacancy a few months ago. Adams said she hopes to improve the school district’s “strategies for cultural diversity” and engage the community to share ideas with the schools, informing a broader array of curriculum subjects.
“One of the big things that the school district will be able to improve on and implement is our strategies for cultural diversity and implementation of various strategies to allow the students to become more knowledgeable on the diversity within their own community,” Adams said. “It’s really being able to provide the appropriate education and the cultural knowledge to the teachers and the paraprofessionals, as well as to the community. It’s not just about the students that are in the district, although it’s the students that are most impacted by what the district decides. It is really allowing the community ... to be able to educate the educators as well.”
Adams, who works as a speech pathologist for the district, was educated in Montague’s public schools and joined the military upon graduating in 1989. She received her state teaching certificate in 2010 after working as a teacher of students with hearing impairment in Brattleboro, Vermont, and a one-year stint working as an assistant speech pathologist in the Gill-Montague district.
Throughout her career in education, Adams said her primary motivation has been to set students on a path to success after they graduate.
“My biggest priority is ensuring that the children that are in the Gill-Montague Regional School District are given the absolute best chance they have to excel beyond their high school education,” Adams said. “There’s always room to grow. The fact is, we have new students coming in each year and we have students going out each year. There’s always going to be room to grow, and it’s our job as a school committee to be able to support progress in our community.”
Scott Hyman
Although Scott Hyman, a self-described “conservative libertarian,” has never worked in education, he said he decided to run for the Gill-Montague School Committee out of a general discontentment with the education system nationally. Hyman admittedly “doesn’t know what’s happening in Montague,” but said he hopes to ensure that local students are graduating with the basic skills they need to become productive members of society.
“These kids have to learn the right stuff so they can get out of school and they can get jobs and be productive members of society. If you can’t do math, you can’t comparison shop, you can’t do much of anything. [If you can’t] read, you can’t sign leases. It’s just ridiculous,” Hyman said. “You’ve got to teach them reading, writing, you’ve got to teach them history, you’ve got to teach them, you know, the standard subjects. Apparently, these days, some of that stuff just doesn’t seem to be as important.”
Hyman said he graduated from the University of Massachusetts Boston with a degree in philosophy and took one class on philosophy of education. He said if he is elected, he hopes to study the school district’s budget and search for ways to better use its funds.
“I don’t know much of anything about how the school system runs. I did see one post online where somebody complained the schools don’t have enough money, and somebody replied, ‘They have way too much money.’ ... I really don’t know, but I’m not opposed to getting there, taking a look at it, and giving it some thought to see if maybe we can do things a little bit better,” Hyman said.
Multiple attempts to contact Carol Jacobs were unsuccessful by press time on Monday.
In addition to voting for Town Meeting members representing all five precincts, Montague voters will see the following positions on this year’s ballot:
■Selectboard, three-year term — Richard Kuklewicz.
■Moderator, three-year term — vacant.
■Assessor, three-year term — Ann Cenzano.
■Board of Health, three-year term — Melanie Ames Zamojski.
■Library trustee, three-year term — Patricia Perham, plus two vacancies.
■ Library trustee, two-year term — vacant.
■Montague Housing Authority, five-year term — vacant.
■Parks and Recreation Commission, three-year term — Barbara Kuklewicz.
■Soldiers memorial trustee (veteran), three-year term — vacant.
■Soldiers memorial trustee (non-veteran), three-year term — vacant.
■School Committee representing Gill, three-year term — James Delorenzo.
■ School Committee representing Montague, two-year term — Clifford Spatcher.

This law firm based on über Christian legal practice (as evidenced by their website and US SUPREME COURT actions they are a part of ( https://independencelaw.org/case-news/ ) is coming for our Childrens’ sexual health and identities and what bathrooms and sports they can use. But ultimately, their physical safety and lifelong mental health.
They are trying to bring religion into school.
Is thisss-, wait, we’re in America, right? 🤷‍♂️
The biggest red flag, is they want to do it for free, the other is that all 9 republican school board members we’ve learned, fully support this Pennsylvania and Virginia plaguing initiative.
Help me, help you. Help me help you. Not trying to lead, just organize.
I’m late to the game but I have children. In one way or another our whole family is -to the person and puppy, diverse, in one or more ways. We’re no longer talking about skin color, ADA, age, stuff were hopefully closer to being past.
We would need to move, if this Christian Right anti-gay anti-‘woke’ pro-life anti-trans law firm is hired -PRO BONO- by the signature of one human tonight (Emily Zimmerman, President), that our constituents elected.
I don’t think the constituents who voted for these 9 board members would still vote for them if they knew that they planned to create a future SCOTUS loss, by not allowing, but cattle-prodding WARWICK SCHOOL DISTRICT TO DEFY CONSTITUTIONALLY required SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE.
what transpires tonight will affect over 32,000 people and HUNDREDS of children. It will cause deaths. It will cause violence and bullying. It will cause close-mindedness, mockery, and enough tears to fill Lititz Springs Pool
If it works, more and more schools and counties will give way.
Yes, it can be changed when people see kids killing themselves for being bullied and girls giving birth at school.
Yes elections happen. It will eventually get better. But instead of having to fix a wrong, 3 years now when a bunch of 3,4,5,6,7,8 graders get traumatized, why can’t we just get it right the 1st time?
I know of a 10 year old who wants to “come out” in dramatic fashion, next Fall when school opens. Not only is child being told they can’t be who they are, but who they know in their soul they are. They are also being told that because of the ILC and Randall Wenger, Esq. and WSD Board that they can’t for SURE (come “out”),now that they will be going to be a Christian school.
Regarding this monumental Warwick School Board Meeting tomorrow night (which Id like them to move a 3rd time, to the STADIUM), because -we make the JH Auditorium too small- in the next 31 hours.
In order to do that. We need to collaborate. Quickly. Bodies. All we need is bodies. (And speakers. You have until 3:30 tomorrow to email Boardsecretary@warwicksd.org to be put on list. And give them hell. I can’t get thrown out of this one so need to be professional, but please come and spill tea tell stories, shame, anecdotes (heartwarming), and logically raise questions so salient and unassailable that instead of signing the contract (https://www.warwicksd.org/website/document/?d=board%2F4att5-21-24.pdf )
They listen to us instead of the other 8 men & women to their left and right.
We all know somebody that is “different” whether we like it or understand it —>we don’t care. we. Just. LOVE them.
If you don’t know ANYone like that, do nothing. Or be an awesome ally. If you DO, go pick them up, grab some of that Frisco’s Chicken on your way to the Warwick HS Football Field for 5:30/6:00 PM tomorrow night for this Rally.
I didn’t take up this mantle, nor will I. But I will temporarily kick up a storm if need be or do whatever I can to help those already leading the efforts against allowing Warwick to put ILC on retainer, mostly on behalf of this child that doesn’t have a Dad, and other children I know about in the WSD.
Dm me, email and phone I will gladly share if you want to talk, and snap of course.
But pls, anyone on Facebook that can reach just about anybody and everybody. If this matters to your heart, or your children, or you, please hack-up this reddit message however you want, or use your own words, and reshare it on THAT social media platform. Twitter and IG too. Hell, threads and truth social if you’re so inclined. I hear there’s a thing called Tik Tok that some people watch 😉
If you plan to vote for Biden and not Trump, this is miniBiden and miniTrump in your backyard, and Trump wants to burn Of Mice & Men & The Catcher in the Rye, any book that helps a kid figure out if they might be gay, bi, trans, asexual, etc, and force your son or daughter to share bathrooms and sports teams based on what PHYSICAL gender they were assigned at birth, not what they and their parents know and accept them to be.
Gender Identity is not physical. Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes…ya don’t.

2024.05.20 21:31 Jammyboy88 GMAT Focus - Score: 675 - My debrief

Hi everyone,

I’m very happy to share with all of you that I got a 675 on the GMAT Focus Edition on May 8th, 2024. It was honestly the biggest satisfaction I’ve had in the last couple of years of my life.
Here’s the score breakdown I got:
Quant: 83 (81st percentile)
Verbal: 85 (96th percentile)
Data Insights: 82 (94th percentile)
Total: 675 (96th percentile)

I prepared with Target Test Prep and I’m very thankful and grateful for the high quality of the course itself and the help I got from it. I’m a non-native speaker and I work full time in a managerial role (thus my spare time is very limited). Thus, I can tell you that getting a nice score on the GMAT is something I’m now very proud of.

Back in 2020 I had started ‘studying’ for the GMAT by taking some exercises on the Official Guide during my summer holidays. I ended up realizing I would have never been able to take the exam itself. Everything felt so complicated and out of the ordinary that I thought I just was not adequate for it.

At the end of 2022, I became convinced I really needed to get an MBA in order to further improve my career - Italy is not the best country in terms of career progression – and make the difference. Thus I embarked – this time for real – on the GMAT journey. I immediately started looking for third party courses. I went for the free trial of Target Test Prep and within a couple of days I figured it would be the one that would accompany me throughout my journey.

My initial level was ridiculously low, in the 450s, getting ca. 30% of questions correct in my sample tests. I was very ashamed, but this motivated me even more to study hard. This is how it all started: every single day I would wake up at 5.30 am and study a couple of hours before work. Weekends became synonymous with full-time immersions.
Thanks to TTP, little by little, I started improving, both in theoretical concepts and in doing exercises. My high school Math phobia was gradually fading and everything started to make sense.
In January of 2024 I took a mock test for the new GMAT Focus Edition (mock #1) and scored a 555, still way below what I wanted. But the score breakdown was clear: my Quant (80) was decent and much improved vs baseline. Verbal was a mess, tho. I really needed to work on that.
I kept pushing and within 4 months – and after several other mocks - I felt finally ready to take my exam on May 8th in Trento, Italy, at a dedicated test center (at the local University).
12 years later, at age 36, I was back to University and I felt very weird. Pressure was definitely there but I knew I could not fail – given all the time, effort and energy that I had put in my studies the prior year.
The check-in experience was very smooth. They were waiting for me and I actually got admitted a bit earlier than expected. I was immediately assigned a computer in order to take my test. Within a few minutes and I was good to go.
The exam starts and – as soon as I see the blue and white GMAT user interface – I feel like home because it’s exactly the same as the one in the mocks and very similar to the one in TTP (thank you TTP). After months of seeing that ugly interface, I can’t be scared. I just have to let it flow.
I choose my section order and I go for Quant – Verbal – Data Insights , with a Break right after Quant. I know that Verbal is kind of easier on my mind than Quant is. So that is the reason of my choice.
As soon as I start, I feel a bit brain fogged, at least for the first question. This is an inequality with three parts – pretty easy according to TTP standards, but I’m not in the best shape yet. It takes me a couple minutes to get it done. I would probably normally solve it in a minute or less. Second question is on rates/ratios, a GMAT classic, and it takes me more than 3.5 minutes to answer. At this point I know I have to speed up, and I magically do – with the exception of a couple questions. My Quant is finally done with two mistakes and one missed question (the last one) due to my losing of focus. At this point I am very unaware and uncertain about my performance and I decide to take a quick break, some food, and a deep breath. After six minutes of break, I am done because I wanna go back - like a warrior – and crash the test.

The Verbal section starts with very easy questions, which make me doubt about my performance in Quant. But I try not to think, and I just go on, very fast, question by question, with the intention of getting everything right. Questions look like a walk in the park after all of the practice test I have taken and all of the reading I have done in the previous months, working hard on my Verbal skills.
Eventually, I will get four questions wrong out of 23 , a very nice result which I’m truly grateful for, especially being a non-native speaker. I have to say I was lucky to find only two reading comprehension passages. That is probably a reason why I am done with the Verbal section with 7 minutes left. However, I do not have the mental energy to go back and review much, so I decide to move on to Data Insights right away.
Data Insights is probably the trickiest out of all the sections. In my mocks I had such a big range of scores in DI, from 39th to 99th percentile. I really did not know what to expect then.
Regardless, I try not to get distracted and I focus on the questions themselves. First one is a TPA question – a pretty easy one – and I get it right. Then the difficulty level ramps up quite quickly, so much so that I get questions 3 and 4 wrong. After that, the experience is pretty smooth until question #15, where I feel some mental tiredness and I get 5 questions wrong in a row – way below my standard performance.
When I get to the last question, I just want to get it done soon and look at my score. I answer very quickly, in less than a minute, even because time left is not much. When I click on the ‘End’ button, I wait for a couple seconds , and… to my surprise, the overall score is a very satisfying 675 ! I just feel like hugging the test center proctor … but I refrain myself from doing it. I, instead, hug my parents, when I get outside. They know how hard I have worked throughout the last year. And they were very supportive. So, thank you mom and dad. Thank you TTP for the highest quality course I could hope for.
I remain at disposal for any questions you might have.
Thanks for reading, and good luck everyone on your GMAT test!

2024.05.20 21:05 IchiTKiller5 I need some advice. About art style, experimentation and tryng new techniques.

To give you some context about myself I'm not a novice artist, I'm also not a native English speaker so forgive my spelling.
I've been doing digital illustrations for over 10 years, since the golden age of deviantart. The medium allowed me to do it without knowing anything about drawing but deep down I wanted to learn so I went to art school. There I didn't learn enough and in my first job I felt very unqualified but it didn't go bad at all. Since then I've been working freelance thanks to my digital skills but completely forgetting about drawing and that discouraged me a lot.
Last year I said enough and I started to practice the basics and I improved a lot. Now I'm motivated and sketching daily but I feel that something is missing in my finished art. I think I have a decent technique that I have done for many years, I'm used to using Sai2, but it doesn't connect well with my recent sketches.
So that would be the advice I'm asking for: How could I bring my technique to a more striking result? or tips to experiment more, in general.
To give you a visual sample, these were my drawings a year ago; these are my diary practices now; and these are my finished illustrations.
This is the first time I post here but thank you very much to anyone who responds. Seriously ❤️❤️
