It is hard for me to say this, but if this book has made its way into your hands, it means that it is already too late for you. For some reason, whichever it may be, you are already in the middle of our situation. And taking the chance now that I already said something so depressing, here is another thing: there is no way for you to get out of it.

Are you being surrounded by strange events lately? I don’t know, maybe the lights around you blink more often than not, the radio changes stations without anyone touching the dial? The animals are suddenly extremely aggressive, or maybe unnaturally tame towards you?

Suddenly you can’t shake the feeling that someone, or something, is staring at you from somewhere unseen in the room…

I guess that I don’t need to mention how this all started. You probably saw something you weren’t meant to see, didn’t you. Some random person breaking the rules of reality in one way or another. A guy flying, a girl on the streets spitting fire, objects appearing out of nowhere.

Nothing makes sense and no one seems to care or know how to explain it. Well my friend, I am sorry to inform you that you have been infected. You are incubating the Arcane Infection, and you are now Awake.

Now, you are a Mage. A Bastard Mage, if you don’t have a master to guide you… which is most probably the case.

If this is the first time you read this book, or any kind of Draconian Text, this probably doesn’t make any sense. I know, it didn’t make sense for me either when I was in your place, almost seventy years ago. But trust me, everything will be explained in time. Just be patient, and stay with me, ok? Keep calm, and keep reading.

The first thing you need to learn is to shut up. You cannot talk about this with anyone who hasn’t experienced it and holds some sort of relevant position in society. Really. Famous scientists, politicians, Mayors, I don’t know. Anyone who tends to be trusted by non-mages. Just. Don’t.

If you already did, let’s hope they didn’t believe you. With some luck, you were disregarded as a fool, a maniac or a person with too vivid of an imagination.

If you survive past three days or so after opening your dumb mouth, you should be safe? Now don’t do that again. The Black Pages don’t like it when you try to talk about this…

Remember that sensation of being stalked? Let’s say that it will eventually go away, unless you are stupid or naive enough to try and bring attention to this deal.

Yes. Magic is real. Good for you. Now shut your piehole and keep reading unless you want to be remembered soon. Walls have eyes and ears, and they’ll probably continue to have them for two or three months. Trying to run away will only perpetuate this, so the best thing you can do is not think about it.

Do something stupid in these months and you will die. Disappear. Kaput. Remembered.

There are people who want to maintain this as a secret. That is another thing I will explain in time.

Right now you have two options: You can learn how to manage this new “gift” (if you want to call it that) in a remotely appropriate way; or you can just be another idiot, and try to live a normal life.

What? You think I am being unnecessarily aggressive? Well maybe I am. But you need to understand the gravity of this situation.

Because I lied. You have no options. Learn how to use this new capability to your advantage, or you will die in a freak accident.

If after reading this you prefer to just keep on with your life like nothing happened, then good for you. Close the book, and put it back where it was. With some luck it will land in the hands of someone less dense.

Still reading? Good. Excellent! Sit down, get comfortable, maybe grab a drink. This is going to be long.

Among the words of this tome in your hands, you will find all the information I have been able to gather along my eighty god damn years of life, or at least all that you need to know to keep yourself alive until getting a proper guide.

It will be a long journey, and many of the things here won't make much sense, especially because I had to take the time to adapt and translate documents three or four centuries old to a mostly understandable format.
So you better be thankful.

The first thing I want you to know: please, for the love of God, do not settle for the things I am exposing here. All the information in this book will be absolutely basic, it won’t replace a formal education.. All the information here is for you to know where you are, how to start, and where to aim.

And now is when I am going to start telling you what IS inside this book.

We will start with something simple: what is Magic (or “The Art”) exactly, how did you end up in this situation and why is it important that you study it by yourself.

Then, after the general explanation, I will talk a little about our “Society”, if we can call a bunch of lonely, grumpy jackasses a “Mage Society”. There are some non-written rules of etiquette and other details that you need to keep in mind, if you want to keep the head on your neck.

Another section of the book will talk about the dangers around us… and this section will be, ironically enough, quite short, because the less you know about it, the better.

Mystery is your greatest ally, it’s everyone’s greatest ally. All that you don’t know is as important as what you do know. And that is what the fourth chapter is about. Each Mage has their own magical system, according to which they can create a Heart. There are as many ways of Magic as Mages in the world (so, not really that many), but all of them share some similarities.

Chapter Five is about the foundations of a ritual. Not every magical system has rituals, but it is always useful to learn and understand how these work, just in case you may find yourself in a desperate situation..

Finally, Chapter Six will be a directory with Formulas, Glyphs and Thrills that should serve as a starting point for all of you. Nothing too complex, but still, very useful. I left a few blank pages here, for you to add anything you learn and feel convenient.

And this would be the real reason behind this tome: take whatever you can, leave what you create for others to use. I started this book as some sort of reproduction of the classic “Metodología del Fantástico”, that dear Gwendolin de Recattio left for us almost four hundred years ago, and that is obviously beyond obsolete at this point.

That and also probably burned to ashes as many other manuals end up.

Take notes damn it, I will leave spaces for everyone to make a little mark. But for the love of the Gods don’t use your real name, don’t be an imbecile.

That casual exclamation to the so-called ‘gods’ makes it clear that this book is either heretical or very old. Then again, the Wohlian it is written in is quite modern… but that could be the effect of magic, right? After all, this thing is written in ‘draconic’, which seems to be a magical language that self-translates or something?

But that was not the only thing that kinda came to my attention. This guy, Gato, is treating magic like this incredibly serious and dangerous thing… and I can’t help but feel a little nervous about it. I mean, everyone seems to be doing just fine, even if there are a few rules that I have to consider. Was this deal really so complicated?

Well, Gato was the expert, and it felt like everyone respected them plenty so… I will abide by them!

Besides, the knowledge here is beyond promising! A part of me wants to skip right to chapter 6 and start learning new runes! But no, I have to be patient, I have to learn the way it was intended and take my time absorbing/acclimating to the knowledge!

That does remind me, I have my own runes to learn and start using, too… should I begin practicing that before I start learning new ones?

Annotations?

I quickly open the file on my computer to compare… and just as I thought, these annotations are not on the scanned version. The beginning is exactly the same, but the writing makes it obvious that these two were written at different times, by the same hand but, still, copied individually!

Cracking my knuckles, I finally get back into the book. Finally, some answers at hand!

purpose:

Build a database of roms to auto import into playnite so when rom is downloaded it has all the data, it’s also nice to offline search what games are available to look out for.

How to do it?

1) use script to scrape a static site for rom names, this will then write to a database.txt file
2) second script will convert roms found in database.txt and make into shortcuts with correct name
3) third script names with exertion of rom file that would be downloaded e.g chd or iso
4) set up an auto scan folder in playnite for the platform of choice and select the folder where all the shortcuts are,
5) update playnite library and let it do the rest, after if you del these shortcuts all the game data will be there. So say shortcut is named “ssx3.iso” if user was to have the “ssx3.iso” in the auto scan folder it will then mark as installed. Other than that it will mark all ps2 games as uninstalled so user can see how many games are installed.

extra:

If scrape sites with links to roms, script will make shortcut to the url of the rom. If rename url shortcut to extension for playnite to scan then change extension back to url,
copy shortcuts to a folder in playnite dir E.g “playnite/system/Store/ps2” when scanning finished control all, edit, got to actions add one for ps2 emu. And another name it “downalod” untick as play action, set as script and put start-process “{PlayniteDir}/System/Store/ps2/{Name}.url”
If have portable fdm for each platform have “start-process “location to fdm portable” first then start-process “location to {Name}.url” wait 5 secs kill edge.exe
What that will do is, if a game not installed, click the box next to “install” and it’ll say download, on click it’ll open correct version of fdm then download the rom and close edge
I’d personally have different fdm portables set up so when downlaod done it’ll exit app, and set the download dir for each platform to “D:/Roms/PlatformName”
For legal reasons I can provide scripts I used to do this but users will need to input there own urls in script to scrape that site or sites for the roms ect. If devs okay this I’ll upload all 3 scripts and you can use yourself if not then you’ll have to make your own scrips but above method will still work

It is apparently recommended that I carry the decision letters of all the colleges I received admits from. I was admitted to four MBA programs for fall ‘24 program. Now, the letters have been taken down from the application portal and the colleges are not willing to issue a copy of it for the visa interview purpose. I wanted to ask if anyone was asked to show a copy of the decision letters from other colleges by the VO during their visa interview? Just want to understand how rarely or frequently do they ask to furnish the proof of admits from colleges other than the one you are enrolling in.

NV - Back in December I was involved in a low speed collision. Basically what happened was they were taking a right turn and I was as well. We were both stopped waiting on traffic to clear. Car in front of me proceeds to go then stops suddenly since another car came out from the next road. In the process of them moving I went to move and accelerated I would be surprised if I hit 5 mph. Since it was sunny out i didn't see them stop again and bumped into them. Very little damage was done to the car, the ding they had on the side was worse then what I did to the back. But still my fault we exchange info shake hands and go about our day. Yesterday I had gotten a copy of a demand letter from geico that an attorney had sent from California. They were demanding something like 75,000 which my policy limit isn't that high. In the demand letter they said I was going at a high rate of speed when I hit them stopped and they suffered about 8k worth of chiropractic care and supposed quality of life loss. I know geico is just going to settle and not fight it.
My questions is it normal for those demand letters to emblish the truth? Should I hire an attorney to send a response letter? Since geico will only pay out my max can they come after me for the remaining 25k. I have no major assets other than a different truck and 2 trailers. The other is tied to a bank and I don't own a home.
I know geico will handle it but I don't want any surprises on my end then I already have.

I’ve been to my local post office about 4 times now trying to do this. I live in Richmond, VA and the mail in my area is really, really bad- my long distance partner sent me a letter that took 3 months to arrive- so I was advised to sign up for notifications about deliveries. Okay. So I go through the website and find out I need to change my address because I previously signed up for it at my old address. Sure. I input all my info, pay a dollar, and go to the post office for an in-person identity verification. Guy scans my stuff, says I’m all good, and then I go home and check my email and I have an automated message saying my identity couldn’t be verified and that they can’t move forward with the change of address. What gives?
I go back two more times. They keep telling me different things about the forms of ID/proof of address. Whatever. Today I bring in my drivers license and current lease. I scan the barcode (not expired!) and again everything seems in order. Head back to work and find another email: “Unfortunately, we were not able to verify your identity and are not able to act upon your change-of-address request.” No next steps, no indication of why my identity couldn’t be verified.
Y’all. Am I doing something wrong? I’m about to just give up completely because I feel like I’ve been given the runaround, but after all this I’d really like to get my change of address so I at least didn’t waste my time. Asking here because my local post office has been not exactly helpful (although I understand that this seems to be an especially tumultuous time for postal workers, particularly in my area). Please advise.

Carlos looked up from his plate of succulent roasted meats and vegetables, all covered generously with a rich gravy, and raised an eyebrow at Amber. They were in Mayor Stelras's personal dining room, enjoying the service of his personal chef. "You know you do. You've read the letter yourself, what, a dozen times now?"
Amber set the letter aside yet again and took another bite of her own lunch. "Yeah, I know. It's just…" She shook her head and chuckled. "Out of all the things that happened the last few weeks, this one is somehow the hardest for me to believe is real. It's ridiculous. I know it's ridiculous. I've personally met and spoken with royalty! Kindar should be nothing compared to that! But, somehow… This is hitting me harder than anything."
Carlos nodded calmly. "Makes sense to me. The presence of royalty is completely new to you. It's huge and important, and far beyond anything you ever expected might happen, but the only thing you've experienced before that's different is its absence. You don't have any memories in the back of your mind telling you 'that's not how this is supposed to work.' For Kindar, you have a lifetime of memories telling you that he's more powerful and better supported than you are, and that you're mostly helpless against his bullying. Now that you're the one in power, and he's the one helpless against you, that's not just new, but contradicts a lot of your past experiences. Some part of you in the back of your mind is having difficulty reconciling the contradiction; it's like you have a subconscious voice shouting 'that's wrong; it's not how this is supposed to work!' For meeting Princess Lornera, that voice is only confused and surprised, not feeling like something's wrong."
"Hmm." Amber cocked her head and paused. She looked down and idly speared another forkful of tender steak. She made a few more contemplative sounds as she chewed and swallowed. "That makes some weird kind of sense. I think." She shook her head. "How did you know that? I never would have figured it out."
Carlos chuckled. "Don't feel bad about it. Not many people would ever figure out that kind of thing about how human minds work without being taught. I certainly didn't. My dad's a therapist, and he taught me a lot."
Amber blinked, then blinked again. "I have never heard of that profession before. In fact, I think it doesn't exist here."
Carlos realized on reflection that "therapist" hadn't translated. There was no word for it in Ganler, the native language here. "Huh. … I hadn't thought about it, but I'm not surprised. It took a long time for people where I grew up to realize that kind of thing can be important. Or maybe the hard part was realizing that it takes education and training to do it well."
"Ah."
They ate mostly in silence for a while, occasionally humming in thoughtful consideration while they chewed. Eventually Amber was leaning on her elbow, just watching as Carlos scraped up a few last bits of gravy from his plate. She stared distantly at nothing. "Hmm… You know, I'm tempted to actually accept, just so I can rub his face in how I succeeded better at his own greatest ambition than he ever will."
"Hmm? Oh right, Kindar." Carlos chuckled. "I imagine a few sessions of smugly condescending to him would be rather cathartic revenge for you. Would it be worth the downside of helping him actually achieve his ambition, at least to a minor degree, though? I'm sure that if Darmelkon had any other viable options for helping his son with this, he would have taken care of it years ago. If we refuse, we'll be denying Kindar from achieving his ambition at all. Wouldn't that be better revenge?"
"Logically, yeah, that makes sense. But it just doesn't feel satisfying to me." Amber took a sip of water and pushed her empty plate away. "I want to show him how badly we outclass him now. I want to see his face when he realizes that he will never measure up to the 'annoying stupid girl' he used to tease."
Carlos put his hands together, resting his elbows on the table, and rested his chin on his hands as he looked at Amber. "Not to mention how much money Darmelkon will pay us for doing it." His voice was calm and level.
Amber nodded quickly. "Yes, that too."
"You realize we're already rich now, right? Receiving taxes, and all that."
Amber threw her head back laughed uproariously. When her laughter finally tapered off, she leaned forward and looked Carlos in the eyes. "You may have heard that Darmelkon is rich, but you clearly don't understand how filthy rich he really is. Yes, I was shocked when he offered a hundred gold bounty for finding us back before we became nobles, but that was only because I didn't know why he considered us valuable. For this? For helping his son achieve his otherwise impossible greatest desire? A price in platinum would be cheap! I would bet that he'll pay in mythril and be glad about it."
"Hmm." Carlos quickly did the math in his head. 100 gold was roughly equivalent in value here to a million dollars on Earth, and is also equal to 1 platinum. So 1 million dollars per platinum. 100 platinum is 1 mythril. So each mythril coin is around the same order of magnitude value as 100 million dollars. Just 10 mythril to match a billion dollars. "Okay, that's more than I thought. So he's a major business tycoon? What the hell is he doing living in a backwater in the middle of nowhere like Erlen?"
Amber shrugged. "I have no idea. Ask him."
Carlos stared for a moment and snorted. "I suppose it doesn't matter." He took a deep breath. "Alright, I guess we're at least seriously considering it after all. So, let's break it down, pros and cons. Pros: personal satisfaction for you, Darmelkon loses any basis for claiming we still owe him a favor, and we get a ridiculous amount of money. Cons: Kindar becomes a noble. Also, we have to put up with him being here for a while. Anything else?"
"Another one for pros: Even with the favor and Darmelkon paying so much, Kindar himself will personally owe us, bigtime." Amber grinned. "His house will just about be permanent vassals in service to us."
Carlos hesitated, then frowned. "… Just how much, and how long, do you intend to keep paying him back for how he treated you?"
Amber raised an eyebrow and shrugged. "…Until I get tired of it? I don't know."
"I'm all for giving him a well-deserved comeuppance, turning the tables, and giving him a taste of his own medicine to teach him a lesson. But I will not countenance continuing to humiliate and abuse him long term!" Carlos shook his head emphatically. "If we do that, we would be bullies just as bad as he was. I hate bullies, and I refuse to be one."
Amber slowly lowered her eyes, blushed, and nodded shyly. "I… You're right. That is not the kind of person I want to be. I'm sorry for suggesting it."
Carlos leaned forward and reached out to gently put his right hand on top of her hands. "It's okay. What's important is that you recognize your mistakes, learn from them, and make yourself a better person. My parents taught me that very, very thoroughly."
"Yeah." Amber sighed and shook herself. "Thanks. I'll try to remember that. And… Should we just call off the whole idea?"
"Only if you truly want to." Carlos squeezed her hands gently. "If you can get some satisfaction without taking it too far, then that's completely okay, and you were right that there are serious benefits to it. Even having him as a vassal house, as long as we treat him reasonably. Though… Hmm." He frowned. "There has to be a reason why strong noble houses aren't raising up new vassal nobles all the time, right? It's not all that hard to make a noble soul plan if you know the requirements details."
"I suppose. Lorvan probably knows the reason."
Carlos nodded. "Yeah. I feel like he might just ask if we can figure it out ourselves, like he did about nobles keeping mana wellsprings, though…" He shrugged. "I'm sure Darmelkon knows too, and he wouldn't have asked if the Crown forbids it, or anything like that. He's ambitious and ruthless, not stupid. We should ask, certainly, but I expect any consequences we might have overlooked will be manageable. As I see it, the core question is just…" Carlos reached his other hand forward, firmly clasped and lifted both of Amber's hands, and looked her in the eyes. "Amber, what do you want to do with this?"
Amber stared back for a moment, then averted her gaze. "Don't you have an opinion about this too? Why are you only asking me?"
"Of course I have an opinion, but all he did to me was loan me a sword in a dungeon and then act rude and arrogant when he demanded it back afterward. You are the one who grew up being bullied by him. How to treat him matters far more to you than it possibly could to me." Carlos squeezed Amber's hands reassuringly. "Amber, please, look at me." He waited, and after a few seconds Amber hesitantly turned her head to face him directly again. "My opinion on this is that I want our response to be something that you will be content and happy with. All other relevant considerations that I can think of are less important than that."
Amber stared and slowly nodded. "I… Thank you." She squeezed Carlos's hands back and awkwardly extracted her hands from his grip so she could lean forward and rest her head on them, propped up by her elbows on the table. "I think… I do want to accept, but maybe with some conditions. I still want to show him up in person and see his reaction. Part of me still feels afraid of him, and I want to prove to myself that he doesn't have the power to threaten me anymore. That seems like something your 'therapists' would say something about. Would they say it's a good idea? Do you know?"
Carlos nodded. "Yes, absolutely. Standing up to something you used to fear is a great way to resolve residual fear of it that lingers in your mind."
"Then, yeah. I want to do that, and I do still want to get some payback." Amber hesitated. "But if I start bullying people like he did, I'd start hating myself as soon as I realize it. So, no bullying. And that goes for Kindar too. If he can't learn to stop being a bully, then he doesn't deserve what he wants. Let's give him a chance. Make our conditions clear, and demand partial payment up front, but give him an opportunity to earn our help."
"That sounds fair." Carlos cocked his head and frowned in thought. "Having him with us may require adjusting some of our plans. … Actually, we're overdue for making certain plans in the first place. I got a bit too carried away with my excitement over all the spell keywords we can learn now. Sorry."
Amber grinned. "Have you forgotten that I told you I'm well known for always having a plan? What do you think I've been doing the past two days?"
Carlos raised an eyebrow, then grinned back at her. "Oh really? Let's see what you've got!"

• Worked in the banking industry for 2 years post-graduation (graduated in 2022)
• Don't have a job offer at the time of application, will be heading there to find work (fingers crossed)

Timeline:
Sep 4 2023 - Submitted ECCTIS Application (Academic + English Verfiication), paid £217.50
Sep 12 2023 - ECCTIS application completed and was successful
May 3 2024 - Submitted HPI application, paid HPI application fee (SGD1458) and 2-year healthcare surcharge to UKVI (SGD 3671.92)
May 9 2024 - Biometrics appointment at VFS centre in Singapore (remember to bring the document checklist and appointment letter along with you, as well as upload all the required documents on their portal 1 day before your appointment)
May 9 2024 - Visa application forwarded to UKVI (lady at VFS told me it would take 15-20 working days)
May 15 2024 - Visa application was processed and successful! :) Super fast, was expecting to receive it around June
May 21 2024 - Collected passport with 90-day vignette sticker inside
Visa duration: 20 July 2024 - 20 July 2026

Note about my timeline: I decided to submit the ECCTIS application first as I heard there was a 30 working day turnaround time and I thought this would've been the longest part of the whole process. Besides, you needed this document to submit in the HPI application. I was still on the fence about applying for the visa, I was also still employed at the time and I wasn't sure if I would be staying or resigning, hence why I didn't apply for the HPI visa right away.
Documents I uploaded:

• Degree certificate
• ECCTIS Academic & English Verification
• 3 month Bank Statements
• Photocopied Passport

My experience:
Honestly, I think my application process was quite smooth and hassle-free, I was just worried that the documents I uploaded were not enough but in the end the process was faster than expected. The only thing I was stressed out about was uploading the documents because it stated to upload them before the day of your appointment and I procrastinated doing so (lol). And the annoying bit was ensuring that my documents were not password protected (which my bank statements were) and I had to re-scan them in order to submit the documents on the portal, but a minor issue overall.
I've also read about the 90-day vignette confusion, I was also confused about this but it seems like it's 90 days from the day my visa starts, at least in my case.
Hopefully this helps give people a rough timeline on what to expect, feel free to ask any questions and I'll try my best to help :)
Would also love to hear from those who are in the UK right now and have any advice to share on housing, opening bank accounts, finding jobs, UK phone numbers etc. as these are the hurdles I'm currently trying to get through :')

I'm looking for tips and advice about what to do about my tax situation. I have been using the same tax preparer for 9 years and have never had something like this happen before. I moved across the country last year and my tax preparer said they could and would be happy to do my filing this past year.
I submitted all of my documents they would need by April 1st but my preparer did not file my taxes until May 3. They did file for an extension but I was never told they did this or that they were being filed late and had to pay state penalties. This year, they did not set up a meeting or call time to go over my taxes with me, which I thought was strange but given the lack of communication and delay, I was just happy to have them done finally.
Last week I received a letter in the mail stating there was an error on my taxes and that I owed more to my previous state of residence. I also revieved a voter ID card issued from my previous state. I only lived and worked in this state for 3 months last year before moving. I started reading through all of the paperwork I had received from the preparer and it appears that they filed my taxes stating that I am still a resident of my previous state and they filed a tax credit for the income tax I made in my current state with my previous state. It also seems that they may have used a copy of my expired drivers license from a previous year since I never had a chance to speak with my preparer and submit a copy of my new drivers license.
My vehicles, drivers license, voter registration, professional licenses, and home are all listed in my new state that I've lived in for over a year now. I recently applied to a graduate school program and in-state tuition. I'm worried how this mistake will affect my eligibility for financial aid and in-state tuition, as well as my profesional licenses, job, etc.
I left 3 voicemail and 2 emails last week and finally spoke to the tax preparer's secretary yesterday and she said to send then the letter stating I owe more to the previous state and my current drivers license and they would see what can be done. I have not been able to speak to the tax preparer, I can only speak with the secretary which is extremely frustrating.
The extreme lack of communication and professionalism has been very stressful and upsetting to say the least. I could understand a very technical error but filing someone's taxes in the wrong state entirely and screwing up thier college financial aid seem completly negligent. Should I even continue working with them to fix it or try to find someone else? My biggest concern is getting this fixed so that I can start college this fall and maintaining my licenses for my job.

It stormed in Starfall.
Perhaps elsewhere, too. Allyria couldn’t be sure. But a storm never kept a raven from its duties, and so surely that wasn’t an excuse for hers to have not yet returned from the North. Not that she was expecting a reply – she never got those from Widow’s Watch – but it was unusual for the bird to be gone as long as it was and Allyria tended to worry about them after a while.
“Maybe he’s stopped to roost with some friends,” she wondered aloud. Birds were social creatures. Not like her.
From the north-facing windows of her tower, Allyria could see that the ironmen’s structures had held through the lashing rains and heavy winds of the past two days and were now awash in noon’s sunshine. Those structures would eventually be home to however many Dornishmen who’d joined the Princess’ caravan thus far on their way to the Great Council.
Time was running out. They’d be here soon.
Allyria thought the sight of the waiting tents might make her sad – a reminder that Lord Erik had gone. But she had his gift to remember him by, and had already filled the secret compartment of the broken-looking far eye with treasures: a sea shell, a few coins, a small figurine of a sheep carved with wood and wrapped in real wool that was given to her when she was a child. She held the lens in her hands, fiddling with it as she gazed out the window in the hope of seeing black wings.
“I am talking to myself,” she said. “When I send letters to Widow’s Watch, I am addressing no one but myself.”
She had been writing the northern holdfast for years now. Allyria thought it a pity that star keepers outside the Citadel did not converse more with one another. She had never been North, and would likely never go, but she knew that the stars would look different from the peninsula jutting into the Shivering Sea than they did from here. Different, too, from Seagard and Bear Island. From the Fingers and from Claw Isle. But while Cailin passed to her the records of those maesters, there was none from that eastern holdfast – the small castle on the lonely strip of land jutting out into the wide, mysterious sea north of Essos.
She wrote them nonetheless.
Her raven always returned, but never brought with it a new message. What was done with the scrolls she attached – handwritten copies of her star charts, occasional questions and observations – she did not know. Perhaps the bird simply dropped them into the sea.
“I ought to stop talking to myself.”
Allyria gathered a few things and headed for the stairs that would take her down from her tower and into Starfall. It wasn’t often that she was awake during the daytime (she had the storm to thank for that) and she could do with some company.
Qoren was the obvious choice, but he had become difficult to find as of late. Perhaps it was because of the impending guests, but whereas normally he’d be waiting outside her chambers by nightfall, now she found herself charting the stars alone, occasionally opening the door to her tower in the hopes of finding him. But she was always disappointed. Tonight she resolved to go further than the top of the tower stairs, however. She’d go all the way to the barracks, if she had to. And it turned out she did.
“Qoren, milady?” The sentry outside seemed doubtful as to whom she was asking for. “The deaf one?”
“Yes, Qoren.”
“I think he’s in the yard with Lady Arianne.”
“Could you tell him I was looking for him when he gets back?”
Satisfied with his obligatory promise to do so, Allyria wandered up to the rookery a second time. Her bird had still not returned. The last message she’d sent Widow’s Watch was an unusual one, which was perhaps why she held out hope that this time, despite years of precedent, would be different. She’d written it half-awake after being pulled from a strange dream. In it, the Dornish Princess arrived at Starfall wrapped in long silk made from moonlight. She’d brought with her a chest and in it were the remains of Ulrich: his ribs, his skull, his arm. The chest was leaking blood all over the floor of the great hall, pooling at the Princess’ feet, but the hem of her silvery gown was not stained. It seemed to sit atop it, like oil upon water.
Allyria had described the dream in her letter and carried it to the rookery while still in her bare feet and nightgown, sleep crusted in her eyes. She’d been in the process of binding it with string when a final thought occurred to her, which she hastily scribbled at the bottom of the parchment.
If the sun sets in the west, how could darkness come from the east?
She pictured the raven stopping to roost in the rocky cliffs of the Prince’s Pass, her letter fastened to its ankle as it caught up with old friends. Perhaps they discussed her ramblings amongst themselves, swapping their own theories about what the cryptic message from the stars meant: darkness comes from the east. Perhaps they lined their nests with her parchment.
She meant to go back to her tower, perhaps catch some precious sleep before night fell and the stars came out, but Allyria found herself instead on one of the balconies overlooking the training yard. It wasn’t noise that drew her there, for Arianne and Qoren were quiet. The only sounds in their training was the shuffling of feet on sandy stone, a soft grunt here and there, the occasional muffled thud of steel greatswords on leather. Allyria wasn’t sure what it was that prompted her to pause and observe.
She leaned over the rail and watched them spar. They did not speak to one another, she noted, communicating only in nods and small gestures. Sometimes, when her sister was concentrating, she stuck her tongue out the corner of her mouth. But Arianne’s expression now was grim. She blocked and parried. She watched how Qoren moved his feet and imitated the motions.
Then, the sky darkened. For a moment, Allyria thought a new storm was rolling in. But this was a different sort of darkness. It was as though someone were slowly draping a veil over the whole world… except that she could see a thin layer of orange on the horizon, just beyond the castle’s walls. There, in the distance, it was day. But above Starfall, quite suddenly, it was night. The temperature sank, frogs in the banks of the Torrentine began to croak, shadows sprung up where none had been, and those that were there grew blacker, more distinct.
Allyira might have thought she were imagining things, but Arianne and Qoren had stopped their sparring and turned their gazes towards the heavens, along with every sentry on the wall. Around them, and around Allyria, too, guards were similarly staring at the sky in confusion and wonder. But no one spoke. They were all looking at the same sun – now a ball of black with only a thin halo of light around it – in a tense kind of confusion. It was disorienting. Allyria felt her heart thumping in her chest and realised, as though from a distance, that she was frightened. She had lived her whole life within these walls and yet the sight before her now was of another world.
So, too, were her sister and Qoren. Arianne was in the shade of the balcony but the steel of Qoren’s sword reflected a bar of silver light across her face. Beside her pale features, Qoren’s grew even darker in the black shadow – his dark hair was now black as pitch, his eyes obscured beneath black brows, even his armour, dyed leather, was black.
Darkness comes from the east.
Whole minutes passed before the day’s second sunrise seemed to happen before her eyes: the sky lightened, shadows returned to where they ought have been, and the sun grew bright and yellow once more. The frogs and the bank insects grew silent. Birds sang again.
Allyria flew.
Past guards, past guests, past the members of Starfall’s counsel, all headed in a panicked confusion towards the courtyard, Allyria ran. She took the stairs of the Palestone Sword tower two at a time, losing a sandal along the way but abandoning it entirely.
How could I have been so stupid? she wondered. Darkness from the east! It wasn’t the tree, it was never the tree!
In her chamber she found her desk in a state of disarray. Her work had been much more organised with Qoren’s involvement and the absence of it showed.
Darkness comes from the east. Dawn. Dawn!
She hadn’t yet found the chart she was looking for when she heard a pounding on the door. She ran to it quickly, dragging open the heavy wooden board and finding an unexpected face on the other side. Her confusion must have shown, because the steward began with his explanation.
“I don’t mean to disturb you, my lady, but a raven came and I thought you would want to read it right away.”
Allyria blinked.
“It’s from Widow’s Watch.”
She snatched the scroll from Colin’s hand the moment he showed it, unravelling it hastily as she rushed back to her desk. The astrolabe sat crooked on the wall. She didn’t realise she’d accidentally knocked it askew in her haste.
Pressing the parchment flat against her desk, she read the words written in an unfamiliar hand.

A drawing was etched beneath it and Allyria scanned the markings quickly. They painted a picture of the night sky, each star’s position carefully logged. The Crone’s Lantern, the Ghost and the Galley, the Sword of the Morning…

Allyrica looked up from the paper at the astrolabe on the wall. The device that had deceived her.
“The next Sword of the Morning. It’s Qoren.”

Got my biometrics day after. I've already uploaded a bunch, and I just wanted to know if I'd missed out on anything. This is from India, if that's helpful.
No place to upload a scan of the passport so I haven't done that. The upload page is ambiguous here - it says 'Travel document of ' but doesn't actually give an option to upload. Please suggest if this is something I should upload under additional documents or something anyway, so as to not get charged when I'm there for the appointment.
A scholarship offer letter, which gives details of fee waiver and the stipend.
A signed letter I sent to the scholarship committee, accepting the scholarship.
Their email acknowledging my acceptance.
Since it'll take a month for the scholarship to kick in, bank statements and a letter from the bank showing what my minimum balance was over the previous 28 day period.

Edit: my English language ability and my previous qualifications have been assessed by my university and the CAS mentions this - that's why I am not uploading anything related to that. As for accommodation, i haven't booked anything yet - but in the visa questionnaire I've given a description of where I'm likely to stay (student housing)

Posting from a burner account. I'll keep this as brief as possible.
In 2019 I had a very unpleasant separation/divorce with family court involvement. The family court case resulted in our 2 children living with mother and spending time with me (father) on an equal 50/50 split.
The stress of the divorce and family court case caused me to stop working for some time. Shortly after the family court judgement I made a UC claim so I could provide for my children. When asked if the children lived with me I explained about the court order and the fact they would be with me 50% of the time. I even supplied the court order to UC for them to see this judgement.
The claim was awarded and since then I have been receiving UC every month. Yesterday I received a letter stating I had to attend a telephone compliance interview which I have just completed.
The agent on the phone told me that as I wasn't claiming child benefit my UC claim has been flagged, and in fact only the parent in receipt of child benefit can claim UC. Mother claims child benefit for both children and refused to relinquish half of this, despite the children living with me and me paying equally for all their expenses.
Consequently, UC tell me my claim is incorrect which means not only will they stop my UC, I will also have to repay the last 4 years as they are technically "overpayments" - this could be over £20k.
I am at a loss as to what to do - UC have advised me to try and find some proof I am the main contact at my children's school, doctors, dentists etc... though I fail to see what difference this will make as legally I am a non resident parent (and don't get me started on fathers roles being diminished by the family court, that's another story altogether!)
I queried why the DWP accepted my claim in the first place if it was wrong, to which I was told they were approving any claim with children involved during the pandemic. I also queried why its taken them 4 years to raise this to which they had no answer other than my account had just been flagged.
Surely this should not be my problem if they were not following their own rules when deciding to award the claim? I have never been anything but completely honest with them and as I mentioned earlier, they saw a copy of the court order in relation to the children's living arrangements at the time of the claim.
I'm at a loss as to where to go from here. Any advice would be hugely appreciated, thanks for reading.

I had a customer coming to POC yesterday she had a $30 Kohl's cash and when I scanned it it said the cash was not activated now I had already got in two previous Kohl's cashes from different customers with the same issue those ones were increments of 10. Because they were not expired because they came in on the right dates you know we did the yes we can policy because this last one was a bigger amount than 10 I called the h2 on the walkie to let her know that this is a reoccurring issue and because of communication with the walk is very choppy back and forth instead of coming up so I can show her what's going on she asked me you know can you explain it to me on the walkie so I did. I mentioned to her you know I'm going to do the the yes we can but it's something that's happening more than once. From there kept cashing out the customer, I tried looking up the coupon on her rewards she could not remember her password to get into her app and I went through her emails and could not find it. The H2 came up at some point near the end of to he transaction and she was more bent out of shape that I honored it and that I said I was going to honor it on walkie without her full okay but at the end of the day that was what they were going to do, and she asked me to say it on the walkie. She kept repeating herself and cutting me off if I tried to explain what happened. Truthfully I mainly called her up to let her know that it was a reoccurring issue not for her to fix anything. Was I honestly in the wrong because I don't feel like I was. You know often I'm left with a long line by myself and barely any support to begin with In all the years I've never had anybody tell me that I had to wait before I did anything not in that kind of situation. If it's an expired cash and they're having a fit about it I call them up so the manager can handle it, this one was not activated properly she is an older woman and she is a regular. Her order was still almost $200 even with the adjustment and I took the physical copy of the Kohl's cash. I also had an issue with her earlier in the night were customer was already having really angry I deescalated the previous situation in front of main manager , main manager walked away and boom this previously angry woman's receipt didn't print. The computer rebooted I looked up her transaction number it shows that it was paid for, I had watch her balance go to zero and freeze with printing her receipt. The ladies coming back for her receipt today and the H2 I had a bad night with ended up printing out the receipt after the customer left I was right it was paid for but throughout the whole night as she's trying to find the merchandise credit and all that stuff she's going back and forth saying I bet she didn't pay for that stuff or it didn't go through. But I looked up the transaction number and we had this woman waiting such a long time that she was getting angry all over again. I'm just frustrated right now.
