2024.05.13 03:43 Royal-Procedure6491 Schools that don't allow the celebration of certain holidays?

So, I was recently hired for a job at a QSI school. I already knew they had a "no smoking" policy. I was fine with that. I think cigarettes are gross and they make people's clothing smell gross. I had heard that the founders were Evangelical Christians and had some weird expectation that the teachers they hired were all Christians, but never encountered a single question about my religion during the interview process.
But now I'm doing the online onboarding, and there is an entire section on how they will not allow any of their schools to celebrate or even acknowledge one specific holiday- Halloween. They say this is because Halloween is a "controversial" holiday. This is the first time I've experienced an international school refusing to allow the celebration of a holiday that, in other schools, is simply treated as a fun dress-up day and not some big, Satanic propaganda thing or whatever the founders of QSI believe it to be.
Does your school refuse to allow the celebration of any specific holidays?

2024.05.09 03:57 5cr4m The Un-Santa, Ol Snag, Scumbag thief of Christmas

I've had this... person in my head for about 20 years now, and I have to give him the lore he deserves.
I'm not too good at drawing faces so it doesn't look like the guy in my head, it doesn't matter. It's more about his personality than his likeness.
𝐒𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐲𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐫 ⅩⅢ
AKA: Dark Santa, the Un-Santa, Ol' Snag, Saint Scrap
The great Shame of Christmas,
The bastard son of Santa Claus himself,
Patron Saint of Electrical Wire Scrappers,
———————— 🎄Santa comes down from the chimney.
🗡Snaggletooth comes up out of the toilet. ———————— 🎄Santa leaves gifts under the Christmas tree.
🗡Ol' Snag cuts your power and scraps your electrical wires. ———————— 🎄Santa Claus is portly from eating all the cookies, with a thick white beard, and laughs heartily, "HO HO HO!"
🗡Ol' Snag is gaunt, with burns and sores all over his hands from scrapping all the electrical wiring, and has an oily thin curly-q mustache, whacks off on your toothbrushes and growls, "OH OH OH!" ———————— 🎄If you leave milk and cookies out overnight, Santa will eat them, leaving a few crumbs and an empty cup of milk as evidence.
🗡If you leave your pets roaming about overnight, Snag will take them to train for cage-fighting matches, leaving any bells or collars behind as evidence. Also if you leave your cell phone sitting out he will try to get into it for blackmail purposes. ———————— 🎄Santa wears a fluffy, red & white winter coat, big belt, red pants, with big black boots, and you can hear him because he's got bells on.
🗡Ol' Snag wears a tattered lime-green wife-beater and faded turquoise sweatpants with stains and you can't hear him because he's barefoot. ———————— 🎄Santa Claus has a magical gift sack that has unlimited space for storing all the gifts he gives out.
🗡Ol' Snag has a magical rolled-up sweatpants leg which can be rolled forever which has unlimited space for storing all your wire and valuables. ———————— 🎄Santa loves children and enjoys Christmas because it's all about giving. But he has a naughty list and a nice list and if children are naughty he gives them a lump of coal instead of gifts, but this is because he "loves them and he wants them to be good." (Supposedly)
🗡Ol' Snag enjoys Christmas because it's all about getting. He doesn't keep any lists because he finds generally finds children more-or-less equally shitty. The only value children have to him is that they're easy marks. ———————— 🎄Santa rides a sleigh pulled by reindeer with one special reindeer at the front whose nose glows so bright that it allows them to see at night.
🗡Ol' Snag rides a scooter pulled by a pack of hyena with one special hyena at the front with rabies, whose mouth foam froths so white, that it shines at night and lights the way. ———————— 🎄Aside from leaving gifts under the Christmas tree, If you hang stockings up, Santa Claus will stuff small gifts inside them.
🗡Aside from leaving jizz on your toothbrush, if you leave your toilet seat up, Ol' Snag will drop a turd in there for you because he's always got the shits. If the toilet seat is closed however he gets angry and pulls the lid off the top of the toilet and hides a turd in the toilet tank. ———————— 🎄Santa has a workshop on the north pole with many elves that are busy making Christmas presents. Mrs Claus is Santa's other half and she lives up there with him.
🗡Ol' Snag has a sweatshop on an abandoned cargo ship on the equator. They make counterfeit cigarettes, cheap fentanyl, crystal meth, and disinformation propaganda for supporting various genocidal warlords around the world. Instead of elves working for the Un-Santa, his staff is mostly the blackmailed children of whom he had accessed their phones in his night-time house visits. One particular child caught his attention, which he kidnapped and abused for 2 decades. In Snaggle's warped mind, this child was like a prodigal son. He eventually escaped from Snaggle's captivity to become a hermit in a cave on a mountaintop. That child grew up to become the famous Grinch Who Stole Christmas. ———————— I think it would be fitting such a character truly gets their traits from many people, not just me. A character like this isn't really living up to their potential without being created from the minds of an aggregate cultural source.
So let's go!
What else would the Un-Santa do? What else would he look like? What's his backstory? (Snaggletooth Stinkeye Henchoker is just a placeholder) we can change it, but I like Ol Snag because he takes, and Henchoker is cuz he whacks it in people's bathrooms. Other ideas are welcome all around.
This is an opportunity for us to vomit forth our most depraved, foul, offensive, appalling ideas formed into a singular lump of a miserable schmuck.
I've been adding traits alongside the original Santa's traits to show the lore-pairing that I've sourced but any format should do. Let's birth this magnificent Tulpa.

2024.05.06 15:00 paulflythe 30 Example of Thesis Statement to Enhance the Strength of Your Thesis

Steve Jobs remarked, "Great things are not done by one person. They are done by a team of people."
Before discussing the thesis statement example, let’s know what the thesis is. And what is the thesis statement? A thesis is the base of your master's or Ph.D. Writings, which give the structure to your arguments.
Conversely, a thesis statement supports the evidence in your essays, papers, and research papers, typically being positioned at the outset of your writing. Your thesis statement should be specific to your argument, steering clear of statements already widely accepted as truths. For example, a statement like "it is known to everyone that cats are cute" lacks the necessary depth for a thesis.
Instead, a debatable thesis statement could be "A cat's cuteness is derived from its small size, floppy body, and playful nature." By including these elements, the thesis becomes debatable, igniting interest and encouraging readers to delve further into the topic. Understanding the mechanics of crafting a good thesis statement is crucial for fortifying the integrity of your thesis data.
This blog also offers a selection of thesis statement examples for research papers to provide additional guidance.

What is a Thesis Statement? How Can a Thesis Statement Generator Help?

It becomes necessary to know what a thesis statement is and how it can help in academic writing. A thesis statement serves as the central argument or main point of an essay or research paper. It succinctly summarizes the topic and presents the writer's stance on the issue being discussed. Crafting a strong thesis statement is crucial as it guides the direction of the entire piece of writing and provides a clear focus for the reader. However, formulating an effective thesis can be challenging for many students.
This is where a thesis statement generator comes in handy. Such tools help users generate coherent and concise thesis statements by prompting them to input key information about their topic, arguments, and supporting evidence. By providing a structured framework and guiding the thought process, thesis statement generators assist writers in articulating their main ideas more effectively and with greater clarity.

2024.05.02 17:25 boopboopadoopity The Ultimate Reference/Context Guide to Bye Bye Birdie (Part 1)

So I'm in Bye Bye Birdie for the first time. There are SO many references that I feel like I had to do research to figure out. I can't believe how much I miss of the references and context. The only place I found these compiled was this text-based personal website last dated 16 years ago, and even then it's only a few (though really key ones!) and some of them don't show up in my 2024 copy - I wonder if they were pared down. Regardless, figured I'd make a context and reference list based on the copy I have!
I can't fit it all in one post, I exceed the text limit, so we'll start with Act 1 with general context stuff and the second post will be Act 2 only :)

Context

How Dated Was the Musical When Released?
Bye Bye Birdie is famously a direct reference to Elvis Presley getting drafted in 1957 and the stir it caused. But note the musical was written and published in 1958, and went on Broadway in 1960. It's like if a musical went on Broadway this year (2024) about a blonde-haired pop star named Tay-lee Quick (instead of Taylor Swift) who performed a world tour, but didn't initially book any dates in Canada, causing a massive outcry, leading to several Canadian officials and the president "Justice Troodoo" to beg her to stop there and... something else silly happens involving her, then she gets punched by a jealous girlfriend, and silliness ensues.
That is how on-the-nose this musical really is. There are many references to what would have been VERY modern events in this musical. For that reason, I'll try to give some equivalences of how the references in the musical would sound if it was written today.
Elvis' Perception in America
This extensive Wikipedia article does a great job of saying in many words that Elvis was insanely influential and deeply controversial. 1956 was a major year of stardom for Elvis -
Phone Calls
Phones are obviously a huge part of this musical! Wanted to combine all the phone references here.
Kim's Phone Number: Kim's number is, according to Rosie in Act 1, Scene 1, "Capitol 7 - 8820". In the 50s, the previous system which used 6-digit phone numbers started to be replaced by one that used an "exchange prefix" and 5 digits after. (Source) (Source) At the time, phone numbers that didn't connect to anyone were given out for shows like I Love Lucy, so that may be what happened here as well, though I don't know.
One Phone Line to Share: Kim's mother asks her to get off the phone early in the play so she can take a phone call. For a long time before cell phones, each home had a "home number" and you couldn't use it at the same time. This is why Kim's mother is asking her to finish up her call so she can call someone and eventually get a phone call as well.
Picking Kim's Number: Rosie uses a rolodex she randomly flips through to pick Kim - which would have been very standard in the 1950s.
The Operator Trying to Get Through: Calls were pushed through using real people, usually women, plugging lines into a "switchboard" to connect them manually. So when Kim's mom says the operator has been trying to get through for nearly three quarters of an hour, she's been trying to not get a busy signal when manually connecting the lines for 45 minutes! That's dedication!
Mr. MacAfee Frustrated with Long Distance Calls: Cost of international calls at this time was per-minute - so calls to New York, Chicago, Fairbanks, Alaska, and Hong Kong would have cost a pretty penny - over $100 for the first 3 minutes in a similar estimation! It sounds like Conrad and Albert didn't really offer to cover this cost, so you can see why Mr. MacAfee is so cross.
Getting Pinned/Going Steady
"Going steady" referred to, in short, being exclusive with someone. "As Time reported in 1957, "Boys and girls who go steady dance together exclusively (cutting in is frowned upon), sip their sodas, absorb their double features and spin their platters in each other's company or not at all. Steady-going girls indicate their unavailability in various ways, [like] the old-fashioned fraternity pins." (Source) It's mentioned in other sources that this could also be school pins, or rings. Something to show your commitment. One of the heads of my production described it like a "promise ring". It's definitely a firmer promise and commitment then just going out with someone, but not quite an engagement.
However, why, if this is such a sweet gesture of romantic love and commitment, would everyone be freaking out about it, and Kim's parents potentially not reacting well to "getting pinned" or "going steady"? (Kim has a line where she exclaims to her mother that she thinks her dad took the announcement "awfully well"). Truth be told, going steady in high school was actually highly discouraged by adults and especially church at the time. This article/Reddit thread sheds some light. I'll copy the first comment here by u/Gfrisse1. "It was felt that going steady would encourage the relationship to develop into one of physical intimacy, something parents wished to avoid. On the other hand, dating a wider, more diverse number of individuals would give them the experience of being exposed to a greater number of character and personality types, thereby helping to hone their mate-selection skills for later on. In the meantime, the short-term relationships were not expected to get much beyond the first- or second-date stage of intimacy. (One-night-stands, or casual hook-ups were not as common-place as they are today.)"
Cigarettes/Age
There are many references to smoking, cigarettes, and how old you should be in this play. It's complicated, but just know that in the 1950s, EVERYONE smoked. Everywhere. In the early 1950s, though, the first studies were coming out with the link to lung cancer, and tobacco companies used every trick in the book to try to squash that. It's genuinely fascinating (and terrifying) how much money and strategy was poured into this misinformation campaign. Read about it here. Anyway, what this means is in the late 1950s, it's not like most were giving up smoking, but because tobacco companies had started more explicitly advertising to minors, several states were in debate about the smoking age. It varied from 21 to 16, but just know that Kim was not considered old enough to be doing it. (Source.)) However, MANY minors did. Think of it like underaged drinking today as the best analogy. There's some specific cigarette references that will pop up in specific scenes, but just know that's the standard.
Patriotism
Fresh(ish) off of the victory of World War II, which was filled with MASSIVE pushes for increased American patriotism (to the degree that Disney even got in on it!), love for the USA was very culturally acceptable and a way to show you were a good person! It was easy to rally around (especially if you ignored the growing civil rights movement of Black people trying to achieve equality, which many white people at the time were very happy to do until they could no longer ignore it - obviously, not touched on in this musical, but significant. Several racist references have been either removed or are requested to be removed by current versions.) But that's why we hear so many classic American anthems in this play!

References by Order of Appearance (Act 1)

Almaelou Music Corporation
This is the end of Almaelou Music Corporation!
Almaelou may very well be a parody of Aldon Music, which would fit due to its major success being in the late 50s, and it's influence in music written for teen girls at the time.
Arpege
Rosie: A five-dollar raise in 1954 and a bottle of Arpege last Christmas.
Arpege is a perfume that was released in 1927 and remained the best-selling perfume of well-loved fashion line Levine for decades. (Source) Albert is quoting a commercial tagline tied to the perfume that was very well-known at the time. It continued to be used in commercials for many years. (Commercial example). It was possible to see 1/2 oz bottles at the time (Source), but Albert gave her a laughably small amount at 1/16 of an ounce. You can still buy this perfume today!
A five-dollar raise in 1954. Secretaries in metropolitan areas could earn around $75 a week. (Source) A five-dollar raise bringing that to $80 a week would, ironically, be about a 1/16 increase in earnings. Also, Rosie is pointing out in an earlier line she has put in 90 hour weeks and hasn't gotten a raise in four years.
Modern example:
Rosie: My last raise was four years ago and you got me that jewelry from Kay Jewelers once
Albert: "Every Kiss Begins with Kay", Rosie. Rosie: Not when that "Kay" is a .25 karat discontinued friendship ring!
Music Business Bum Vs. English Teacher
This is related to the prestige of being an English teacher who is helping people learn a scholarly subject vs. the "seedy" music industry.
Ugga Bugga Boo
"When you wrote Conrad's last hit 'Ugga Bugga Boo' then I knew this was it/You were thru with English forever."
Ugga Bugga Boo is a real song released 1947. It's a comedy song, written by voice acting legend and radio host Mel Blanc (voice of Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, and many others) for his comedy radio show. I do wonder if Elvis had a song in this vein, as the Jetsons did a similar parody with an Elvis expy a few years later, but I couldn't find one.
Geoffrey ChauceWilliam Morris
"It was goodbye, Geoffrey ChauceHello, William Morris"
Geoffrey Chaucer is considered one of the greatest English writers, specifically poets, of all time. Born in the 1400s.
As for William Morris, this could be two references, possibly combining.
William Morris Agency was an incredibly famous music talent agency that would have likely been known by some audience members in the 1950s. They've represented tons of major talent. This is what I believe is the most likely reference given the song context.
However William Morris was a man also considered a legendary poet during his life, born in the 1830s. However, he also made wallpapers and textiles. After his passing, he became infinitely more famous in the public eye for his wallpaper designs than he did for his poetry. This is could be a dig at that Alfred could be great in the English world, but like Morris, his legacy will be for something "silly" instead. (Important to note that his works, both art and poetry, had great impact - and this may just be a coincidence reference, I don't know)
Bliss! Kiss! That rhymes! I wonder if anyone's ever used it before?
Many people had and have, this is a joke of him being unaware of current trends. Dean Martin had a #1 song in 1955 with this very rhyme for instance that audiences may have remembered at the time.
Dentifrice
Albert: Oh one last kiss; it gives so much bliss... what is your dentifrice! No, that's too clinical...
Basically, toothpaste. Which is, kind of, related to kissing? It could actually be a paste or powder for cleaning the teeth, though in the 50s it wouldn't have been the default way to refer to what you used it seems from my research, like in this commercial. May be a way to show off that Albert really does have an excellent English teacher level vocabulary!
A modern example may be "do you use fluoride? No, that's too clinical..."
"What's the story? Morning glory?"
This is most likely a reference to the song "What's Your Story, Morning Glory?" by jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald released in 1958, another topical reference. It's very possible Helen, the teen who says this line, would be aware of the song because Ella Fitzgerald in 1956 had released her "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Song Book" album, her attempt to pull in a non-jazz audience. (Source on Ella's Discography)
"What's the tale, nightingale" is most likely an original line to match the "Morning glory" one, same with the hummingbird line.
"Go to a fancy night club and stay out after ten!"
A nightclub was different from what we think of today. Think tables and chairs, late night musical performances (not the NSFW kind), and in some of the most famous like the Copacabana night club, rubbing elbows with the rich and famous. And drinking, of course! Source on Nightclub Definition
18 in World War II
Mr. MacAfee: I am not an old man! I was 18 in World War II.
This is one that may get a bit better with time. WWII ended in 1945, but the play is in 1958 at the earliest. It's better to demonstrate with a modern example written for 2024. "I am not an old man! I was 18 when Facebook first launched." Not quite the same impact as WWII, but the timeline is similar. Essentially this is not a flex and just shows he definitely is old to a teenager.
No Smoking 'Till You're 14
Albert: Remember the Conrad Birdie Creed dear. No smoking till you're fourteen.
As mentioned in my blurb above, 14 was too young to smoke. A modern version may say "No drinking 'till you're 16" or something. Similar to the line "and stay out of the bar!" later on.
"Go down to Track 12"
Albert: Why don't you girls go down to Track 12 and I'll talk to her.
This is one of the many train tracks that must have run through this station. This station is located in New York, so it would make sense for there to be at least 12.
Wear your rubbers
"Keep your money in your inside pocket. Wear your rubbers. And eat a hot lunch..."
While "rubber" as slang for a condom definitely did exist in the 1950s, I believe it's far more likely Mae is referring to overshoes due to the context, though to be fair, I can't find a source to this being "official slang" besides casual mention in posts like these. Something tells me Mae is not randomly mentioning condoms lol.
A Plain G.I.
Albert: Proud to be a plain G.I.!
Mentioning this because it's faded away from current use and surged in usage most recently at WWII, this is just referring to being a soldier. (Source) Hence, G.I. Joe, if you're old enough to remember that.
Appealing for the Draft
Albert: And that's why he volunteered for...
Men were drafted to join the US armed forces until 1973. (Source)
Jerries
Albert: "Say Mr. Peterson," he cried eagerly, "Do you suppose I can get assigned to the front-line trenches? That way I'll be sure to get one of those dirty jerries..."
"Jerries" is slang for German soldiers and was most popular during WWII. The joke here is that WWII is over at this point - the enemies Conrad would be facing at this time would be the Vietnamese, not the Germans. When Rosie tries to correct him, he just says "whoever's dirty this time!".
2024 equivalent: "Conrad said 'Is there any way I could be placed on Seal Team 6? That way I'll be sure to get that Osama Bin Laden for sure!'" "Albert!" "...Or whoever the terrorist is this time!"
Rosie + Albert's "Origin Stories" for Conrad
Just a few references from Rosie's and Albert's stories in "Healthy Normal American Boy" that may be interesting.
Old Virginie - This may be known as a historical fact for people in Virginia, but Carry Me Back to Old Virginny was popular enough in the state of Virginia that it was the state song starting in 1940. In 1940, the version that became the state song had "Virginia" instead of "Virginny", but people watching the musical would definitely be familiar with the original version as this play was only 20 years later.
Indo-China - An eastern territory that got independence from France claim in 1954, and comprised Cambodia, Laos, and parts of Vietnam. Audiences would have been very aware of what Indochina was - according to Wikipedia, "The events of [Indochina getting independence in 1954 through the Geneva Convention and the political tensions of that between S/N Vietnam and other countries] marked the beginnings of serious United States involvement in Vietnam and the ensuing Vietnam War." (Source) Remember, that's the current war during the events of the play!
Dirty Hong Kong moon - We had a complicated relationship with Hong Kong in the 1950s-60s. Read more here. Though I'm not sure if this is meant to be a mis-insult like when Albert said "dirty Jerries".
A wire to New York
Another Reporter: I'll make sure we've got a wire to New York.
This is almost certainly setting up a telegraph communication to New York, which was still happening (though declining in popularity) by 1960. (Source)
I mean I really feel that girl
Conrad: When I sing about a tree/I really feel that tree!/When I sing about a girl,/I really feel that girl,/I mean I really feel sincere!
This isn't necessarily specific to the 50s or 60s but I think this joke gets missed because it seems so tame today. A huge part of Elvis' appeal was his explicit sex appeal at the time (in the form of - gasp! - hip thrusts!) so he's slipping in accidentally a reference to "feeling up" a girl%20for%20sexual%20pleasure) here. Yeah, that slang started in the 1930s!
Mr. MacAfee's Speech
Just know that this is a lot of great historical references, nothing specific to 1950 - 60.
Ed Sullivan
Ed Sullivan was the nationwide sensation that lead The Ed Sullivan Show, a TV program considered one of the most iconic of all time in US television history. You have to understand just how influential and huge the Ed Sullivan Show was at this time. It's genuinely difficult to think of an equivalent in 2024 - today, people get entertainment from tons of sources on the internet, TV, etc. but in 1960 there were THREE television channels. That was it. THREE. To be fair, there were many, many more radio stations that could deliver information and entertainment, but by 1960 it was a TV nation - as the Library of Congress says, "In 1950 only 9 percent of American households had a television set, but by 1960 the figure had reached 90 percent." The Ed Sullivan Show was well watched and well loved by all of the United States. (And Albert saying that they would appear on Sunday at 8:05 was right, as that's when it aired in real life!)
One reason Ed Sullivan is specifically picked is the absolute bombshell of a privilege to be a normal family on this show beamed in practically every household in the United States. But another is Elvis' relationship with the show. When Elvis finally appeared on the show in 1956, it set a record of the most-viewed TV program ever in the US. In fact, it still holds the record TODAY of having the highest share of TV viewers in all of television history in the US. No other TV program has ever had a higher percentage of people tune in vs. other stations. (I mean, that's helped by the fact that there were only 3 choices, but still!) So yeah - this was a cultural phenomenon that was easy to reference in this show!
Margo out of Shangri-La
Mrs. Peterson: She looks like Margo when they took her out of Shangri-La.
Going to take this one right from that personal website I referenced above!
In the 1937 [movie] "Lost Horizon)" [...] a group of travelers are stuck in a utopia called Shangri-La, somewhere in the Himalayas. One of the residents of Shangri-La is Maria, played by Margo), a Mexican dancer and actress. When the travelers finally escape, Maria insists on going with them. But outside the realm of Shangri-La, her youthful beauty can no longer be maintained and she reverts to her true age, causing her to die and her appearance to transform to the hideously withered, wrinkled features of someone who has lived way beyond a normal life span.
You can watch the movie free with ads here, if you're curious! Also, according to the synopsis, Maria never actually escapes Shangri-La. She just dies and "reverts to her true age". AKA looks very very very decrepit. I'm guessing this is more of an easy thing to misremember and better shorthand, though. See the face at 2 hr 3 minutes in abouts!
Suwannee River
Gloria: Mae, can you hum Suwannee River?
While this is a nice convenient copyright-free tune, it would definitely have been publicly known at the time. It had been sung at least partially by Bing Crosby, on the Honeymooners, etc. in recent years before the musical premiered. Unsure if this is what they were going for, but the original lyrics are racist - no wonder it was Mae's "favorite selection".
Ruby Keeler
(Stage direction) Gloria tap dances as Mrs. Peterson hums gaily. Sort of Ruby Keeler-ish steps with a lot of feet-slapping.
Ruby was a well known actress and dancer in the 1920s-30s (and then later after a break). Here's some footage of her dancing! Interestingly, in her early career she was cast in a musical called Bye, Bye, Bonnie. In a newspaper article review, it seems the plot wasn't very similar to Bye Bye Birdie, though it did involve someone going to jail. (Source)
The Touch System
Mrs. Peterson: I'll find you a typewriter (Exits) Albert: [TO GLORIA] Do you use the touch system? Gloria: Whenever possible.
Albert is just referring to the touch system of typing - basically, not looking at the keyboard while you type. Still relevant today, though not with typewriters, which were standard until the 1980s, so that fits here. Of course, Gloria is of course referring to, uh, something a bit more sensual. (Read: She wants to touch him and not like a friend.)
Kodak Ad
Sullivan: So remember: your surest way to the best in color slides is to insist on the new Kodak! And now, the young man you've all been waiting to see.
Just like media today, the Ed Sullivan Show certainly included ads. This included ad deals where Ed himself would promote a product, kind of like YouTubers do with "This video is sponsored by...". And, as you can guess, one of those products was Kodak cameras and camera related products. Kodak was still a huge brand at the time (there were not cell phone cameras as competition, so it was way more likely your home owned a camera or two), Kodak absolutely was sponsoring the Ed Sullivan show and had been for a few years (Source). Here's an example from the time period. What you may miss about this ad in the musical is that it's not actually advertising a camera! Cameras at the time required physical film be loaded into them, and wouldn't you know it, Kodak released a new high-speed color film in 1959! (I think this may be a coincidence, as Kodak had been selling color film for quite a bit before this) Yet another reference that's right on the nose of the current times (of the time)!
Wear it in good health
Albert: Who let that kid in here? Rosie: I did Albert. Albert: Rosie! Rosie: It's a sort of farewell present to you and Miss Rasputin. Wear it in good health.
Not invented in the 50s by any means, but this phrase really isn't used as much today I think. There's not really a deeper meaning here besides sarcasm that I can find - it's just wishing someone well. Obviously, the sarcasm is dripping here lol.
Dinah Shore
STAGE DIRECTION: ...as Mr. MacAfee throws a tremendous Dinah Shore kiss to the audience.
Dinah Shore was an actress and entertainer that had been popular for years at that point. Super interesting career if you want to give it a read. This is referencing her famous "Dinah Shore kiss" that she would give at the end of her show broadcasts and was a huge part of her brand. Here's an example!
Stay tuned for Part 2! :)

The story of the relationship between Sigmund Freud and his American nephew, Edward Bernays. Bernays invented the public relations profession in the 1920s and was the first person to take Freud's ideas to manipulate the masses. He showed American corporations how they could make people want things they didn't need by systematically linking mass-produced goods to their unconscious desires.
Bernays was one of the main architects of the modern techniques of mass-consumer persuasion, using every trick in the book, from celebrity endorsement and outrageous PR stunts, to eroticising the motorcar.
His most notorious coup was breaking the taboo on women smoking by persuading them that cigarettes were a symbol of independence and freedom. But Bernays was convinced that this was more than just a way of selling consumer goods. It was a new political idea of how to control the masses. By satisfying the inner irrational desires that his uncle had identified, people could be made happy and thus docile.
It was the start of the all-consuming self which has come to dominate today's world.
“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. ...we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons...who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.” - Edward Bernays, Propaganda - (granduncle of the founder of Netfix)
“If you’re anxious for to shine in the high aesthetic line as a man of culture rare, You must get up all the germs of the transcendental terms, and plant them everywhere. You must lie upon the daisies and discourse in novel phrases of your complicated state of mind, The meaning doesn’t matter if it’s only idle chatter of a transcendental kind. And everyone will say, As you walk your mystic way, “If this young man expresses himself in terms too deep for me, Why, what a singularly deep young man this deep young man must be!” ― William Lutz, Doublespeak
It has been suggested that Josef Goebbels should be mentioned, & I recommending researching how these studies in marketing & public interest evolved with Nazi era influence, how the Nazis used these tools towards their efforts, and postwar how these tools of influence persisted & evolved with marketing. Some of this is addressed within the timeline of The Century of Self.

thanks to u/bluefishcake for letting me use his setting, thanks to u/Sp3zn4s696, u/AnalysisIconoclast, u/An_Insufferable_NEWT, u/SpaceFillingNerd, and everyone at the SSB discord. You guys helped me do what i thought was impossible. I have been a long time lurker, and this is my first post here. please give feedback and tell me what I can do better. I would greatly appreciate anything I can do to make this more enjoyable. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 5 months ago, Solo Nobre, UN Interstellar Directorate Sgt. Everett Janson An annoying buzz sucked me out of the pleasant dream; it faded away within mere moments. 5:00 AM, just like always I rose from my bed, stretching and blinking the last remains of sleep from my eyes as I surveyed the darkened shapes within my room. The apartment seemed to be just as I left it, with the slim window by my bedside offering a slice of the metropolis of New New York. God Bless noise-blocking windows. If not for them I wouldn't sleep at all. I sit up on the center of the bed and take care of my prosthetics. Can't keep them on me during sleep, the damn things have a mind of their own when I dream. I grimace as I tune them, the process always being unpleasant. Damn penny pinching VA. Couldn't spend a dime more for proper neuro-link, I sigh as I finally finish the re-calibration of the final prosthetic and attach it into the socket in my arm. I flex the mechanical muscles and smile, "Works fine." Breakfast was a meager affair, with coffee and cold dinner from yesterday being the main highlights. I make sure to add one ration bar for the midday slump; just in case. I sit at the table, chewing on a stale chunk of nutri-bread as I look at my second-hand Omnipad; my current recommended feed being a mess of news stories. Let's see.... A Shil'vati tourist murdered by extremist group on Franklin. Negotiations between the Alliance and the Imperium over the Asherna system stall to a halt. Directorate marines take out Consortium slavers, who established a base on Pandora II … I hummed to myself, washing the taste of synthetic nutrients down with a swig of coffee. Another boring week then? I swipe a metallic finger across the glassy surface of the Pad, switching to my current messages. A frown crossed my face as I gazed upon the first message. Another denied claim, VA being cheap as always. I shook my head at that, marking it as read before moving onto the rest of the messages. Old buddies want to get drunk, my sister in law is asking for money again, can’t she keep a job and... I frowned again as I saw something new, actually new. Message marked... delivered by interstellar courier? My frown deepened. "The hell?" “Dear Sgt. Janson, I am As’lia, a film student at Empress' Zah’rika’s Academy for Young Ladies. I am directing a documentary series about the recent conflict between The Imperium and The Directorate. Currently I am attempting to find veterans of both sides so they could share their stories. My series has been recently approved by both of our governments' Ministries of Culture in order to foster more mutual respect for our peoples. I am currently able to offer you 650,000 credits for your participation and another 40,000 per month in recurring payments, however, you will have to provide your own transportation to Shil. Please contact me if you are interested. Sincerely, As’Lia” What the heck, am I dreaming? I thought to myself, putting my pad away and grabbing my work bag. I”ll deal with that message later tonight, this can’t possibly be real. Why would anyone want a grumpy, sad excuse for a soldier for their documentary? I zoned out as I fell into my normal routine at work, trying to make the most of the long day working as a Bailiff. I had to sit through case after case of people who did something utterly moronic. There was a money launderer who physically washed the money, a drug dealer who was actually selling boxed cake mix, and worst of all, a man who smuggled mint candies into Shil territory. I finally managed to get back home around 12:30 AM. Exhaustion washed over me as I flopped down onto the battered couch in the living room, the message from As’Lia floating to the surface of my mind. Despite my misgivings, I had to face the facts. Working a job I hate, fighting with the VA for what I rightly deserve, and being another lonely, forgotten veteran in a nation with millions just like me. After that, I knew what I had to do. I responded to the inquiry with a resounding yes before sending 50,000 CUs to my sister in law with a message stating “Don’t ask for more” before getting all my affairs in order. 3 months ago, Solo Nobre Spaceport, UN Interstellar Directorate
Sgt. Everett Janson I am standing in front of the ship that will take me, others who received the message and the first Directorate Embassy to Shil. As I stepped aboard, I was greeted by a Naval Infantryman who showed me to my berth. The ship was a retrofitted Heavy frigate. From the moment I stepped on board, I felt like I was finally home. The berth I was assigned to already had two others in it. A large bulky warborg, and a tall willowy man with an eyepatch, we all introduced ourselves, the Warborg was called Fred, and he used to serve with Cerberus. The other man was named John, and he's a Naval officer and diplomat. As soon as we made basic pleasantries, an announcement went out for “all documentary personnel, please report to the meeting room.” The meeting room wasn’t much, just a bunch of chairs, a large computer screen and a table bolted to the floor. Once we all filed in, I saw that there were two more members of the group, but I didn't have much time to look around, because soon after we entered, a man in a fine suit came into the room. “Hello folks, I assume that you all know why you are here” at this there were various nods to the affirmative “great, well here are some extra orders from central military command. You are to represent the Directorate in the most positive light possible, you are to figure out any flaws in the Imperium's defenses, and you are to promote coexistence between our two nations.” The suited man then closed his pad and asked “any questions?” At that, there was silence, the suited man smiled, and left the room. All the rest of us shared introductions. The other two were named Rosalina, and Margit. They were a strike pilot, and a tanker respectively. We all started chatting and played cards for a while. Funnily enough, we were all deployed to Orvet III for the initial Shil invasion. John and Rosalina fought in orbit, and Fred, Margit, and I all fought on the ground. We all realized that we met before, Fred’s Platoon was relieved by my company, and Margit’s company. Rosalina and John provided support fire during the final push to defend Orvet. A discussion started sharing what everyone did during the other parts of the war. Fred was deployed to provide naval infantry an extra boost in boarding actions, Margit was like me, we both spent our time fighting in the frontlines, Rosalina was deployed to harass Shil shipping, and John seemed to have the most interesting time, he launched attacks against Shil worlds, killed a Shil princess, and secured Alliance support for our war effort. We were all surprised that he was going to Shil. I would bet that there is still a sizable bounty on his head for his deeds. After talking for many hours we said our goodbyes and went back to our berths to get some sleep. 8 Hours ago, Shil, Shil'Vati Imperium Sgt. Everett Janson Finally we made planetfall onto the surface of Shil, the others all have business to attend to elsewhere, and so I am by myself. I am supposed to be at the academy at 4:00 pm, and it is 8:00 am now. My luggage was already at the embassy and with nothing to do, so I decided to go on a guided tour of the city. Having found a reputable company and booking a 4 hour tour of the city. The guide himself was a small, skinny looking Shil boy who upon seeing me nearly freaked out, to be fair, now that I think about it, I do look pretty goulish. The skin on my face is literally stapled on, and I am probably more metal than flesh. After he calmed down, I asked him “where to first?'' After that, he started leading me around the city and talking without end. I learned more history and politics in that first hour than I have learned throughout school. Even the horrified looks and hushed whispers of the passersbys didn’t detract from the marvels. We passed life-like statues, beautiful buildings, and exquisite architecture. Man, maybe there would be less crime in New New York, if the architecture was anything other than brutalist prefabs. Although the one young girl who took one look at my grimacing countenance dropped her cone, pointed and wailed upon seeing the effects of what could generously be called meatball surgery did dampen my spirits just a little. I didn’t really know what “the enemy’s heart” would actually look like, I may have expected a place even more brutalist than my home world, not something with green spaces, and color in every hue of purple. Soon we were coming upon the imperial palace, goddamn, this is beautiful, why don’t we have things like this? Oh right, the Shil bombed it. I decided to ask my guide about a good place to get lunch. Soon, it was time for me to get to the Academy. I got a taxi and asked the driver in my broken Shil to “take me to Empress' Zah’rika’s Academy for Young Ladies.” The taxi ride was quite nice, I got to see more sights that weren’t covered by the walking tour I took previously. After a nice 20 minute ride in silence, I arrived at the academy. The Academy was quite large and imposing. I walked through many halls that were filled with artwork that is truly amazing. It took me a bit to get there, the Academy was like a maze. After 20 minutes of backtracking and checking a pretty outdated map that I had. I finally found my way to the room where filming was being done. The room was large, filled with film equipment, and painted a disgustingly vivid shade of violet. There was a large table with many Shils sitting on one side, and a bunch of empty chairs on the other side. Huh, I guess I am the first human here. The Shil on the other side of the table started to glare at me, especially at my FISTer patch. I sat there in an awkward silence, hoping that something, anything, would happen. Finally after 12 minutes of silence, the other humans filed into the room. Good, at least I am not the target of their ire any more. About 8 minutes later two young Shils walked into the room. The first one introduced herself as As’lia, she was the one who sent the message that brought me here. She said “ welcome all, thank you for coming to participate in interviews for my new documentary about the conflict”. She then looked around, and saw me, in my old uniform, my cybernetics polished to a dull shine. She said “ok, do you want to go first?” I replied with “I guess”. Present day, Shil, Shil'Vati Imperium Sgt. Everett Janson “Six years,” I sighed, “It has been six years since we found out we aren’t alone in the cold, cruel universe. Six years ago humanity was just recovering from the Razing of The Rim," I continued, "we were not ready, nor were we expecting to have to fight alien invaders. The war was 4 years of brutality We lost two planets, millions of lives, and a large part of our navy, but we were able to inflict severe losses to their population, their pride, and their willingness to invade random worlds. Now, we have peace, fragile as it might be, but peace nonetheless.” The purple skinned girl started raising her hands simultaneously up to her shoulders, and I broke my eyes off from the camera lens. What did that even mean? she repeated the gesture, faster and faster, until she sighed. “More emotion, it needs more emotion!” “Sorry,” I muttered, rehearsing what I’d just said- what else was there to say? They came, they saw, they attempted to conquer - though at least at a heavy cost. I’d bet that there are now thousands of Shil’vati Marines with a well-earned fear of drones and tanks now. We tried it again, and this time she seemed satisfied enough until we came to the new part. “A few months ago, I got an email from some Shil’vati film student who wanted to interview me for a docu-series about the war. At first I couldn’t imagine: ‘me, a human sergeant, going to the homeworld of my nation’s greatest enemy, to help some film student pass their class’. But I then took a look at my life and thought maybe this might actually be a good thing. My goal is to show the other perspective on the war that greatly affected both of our nations.” Six years ago, 14 days to invasion 93rd Mechanized Infantry battalion, 2nd company, Orvet III, UN Interstellar Directorate Cpl. Everett Janson It is dark and cramped in the belly of the CV270. The troop bay is practically a freezer under the lacking winter sun. My company had been doing exercises out in the woods near Karlov city, and we were finally heading back to base. We, the men and women of the 93rd Mechanized Infantry, had been posted here in response to the Free World secessionist crisis. The free world league was crushed, and the Rim was brought back into compliance, but we were still here. Erik, my squad leader, opened up his hip flask of some dubious liquid that was probably against regulation and offered it around. “Come on Janson, sure you don’t want some,” he growled in his gravelly voice, I replied with a curt “nope” and went back to dozing off, dreaming of an actual bed to lie my head on. Right as I attempted to drift back off to sleep, a crackly message came over the troop bay radio. “The corvette Pendant, and the Q-ship Henry Kissinger, have detected something big on sensors. Readiness 3 declared. All personnel are to be deployed in anti-invasion positions.” With this pronouncement, the entire squad stopped their banter and the became deadly serious. The driver kicked the engine into full gear to the Aton Ridge, a set of hills and forests that the 93rd was to hold. The other vehicles in the company rushed there too. In two hours, we were at the ridge. The place was abuzz with activity, naval Seabees worked with our engineers to set up comms, prefabs, and entrenchments. There were Warborgs with their glossy black armor and unsettling amber eyes, helping move entire howitzers and crates of ammo that must weigh at least 600 pounds. Infantry and armor crowded the area and waited, we waited for something, anything to take our minds off the terror of the idea that we will have to fight aliens. Every day, more combatants arrived. On day one, Two heavy infantry companies and one Mech company of Cerberus Mercs arrived. On day two, a bunch of policemen and logistics personnel showed up. On day three though, an entire regiment of Free World League remnants who caused us no end of trouble during the Razing, arrived with artillery, a signal platoon, a bunch of AA weapons, and tanks. Their CO said “a cease fire has been signed between us, we will defend humanity from the alien threat.” I liked his attitude but I wasn't as hopeful as him. The free worlders’ gear was old and but serviceable, but their tanks were practically 4 person coffins. Despite that, if they were hull down, they should be fine. We swore that no damn alien would take the ridge, unless we were all dead or ordered to fall back. Six years ago, 1 day to Invasion 93rd Mechanized Infantry battalion, 2nd company, Orvet III, UN Interstellar Directorate Cpl. Everett Janson We spent 13 days on the ridge just entrenching, with more forces arriving daily to turn our position into a fortress. We don’t know if it would be enough, though. We did our best to get any rest that we can before the inevitable invasion. At about 11:20 that night, we got another radio message “The system defense fleet has engaged and crippled the enemy fleet, but was forced to retreat under withering enemy fire. Readiness 2 declared. Prepare to repel the invaders, LONG LIVE THE DIRECTORATE!!!” With that we ran to our positions and waited. I was sent to assist the missile company, and the other anti orbit forces. Within 12 minutes, I was sitting on the side of a mobile anti-orbital gun and fiddling with my computer, trying to connect the gun batteries together. As I looked off into the distance, I saw missiles, loaded with bomb pumped lasers, shoot off into the sky. The cold winter air was filled with chaff, jamming waves, and other methods to reduce the accuracy of orbit to ground fire. I just sighed, pulled out a cigarette and lit it. I turned to senior gunner Goldman, and offered him one too. He took it, and muttered “480 CUs that this will be worse than the siege of Tau IX, back during the Razing.” Another gunner yelled out “nah, make it 900”, soon all the gunners started shouting even higher amounts of cash. It took the gun officer to get all of them to shut up and get back to work. In just a few hours, the gun officer yelled out “ready up, the aliens are overhead.” The gun crew, and all the gun crews across the ridge sprung into action. They fired up the computers and the control software rotated all the pieces into place. I yelled out “battery set, fire when ready.” The gun officer shouted “load Nuclear, Set airburst”, the senior gunner shouted “coils at 100%”, and the other gunners set the autoloader with 8 missiles. The gun officer then growls “wait until they hit high atmo, I want the shots to be as effective as possible.” It didn’t take long though for the guns to fire. The shot being flung at hypersonic speeds made an incredibly loud crack as it sped through the atmosphere, soon it engaged its engine and went into the murderous final stretch. Across the region, it looked like fireworks were grazing through the sky. The computer stated “good hit, scratch 8.” We didn’t care, I routed orders to batteries, and the batteries obeyed. Soon shot two was fired, with the same results, more shuttles being turned into slag. The active camouflage tarps that were set up over the guns didn’t hide much because of the huge flashes of projectiles coming out from under them. But for every shuttle we downed, 5 more took their place, and as we kept up our steady barrage, the aliens’ orbit to ground fire became more accurate. The gun crew I was with took this as a sign to switch to kinetic shipkiller rounds. Due to the haze of chaff and jammers, the alien ships had to enter the atmosphere, and this made them a good target for our batteries. Throughout that night, we destroyed frigates, transport ships, and maybe a cruiser. But the cost was high, many of our positions were blown to kingdom come by lasers from orbit, a lot of us died at the ridge in the night. When the morning finally came, there were scorched pits everywhere. We cheered because the enemy's orbit to ground shots didn’t kill us all. But now the enemy had made planetfall, and I went to rejoin the 2nd company, my work with the Missile company finished. I grabbed up my com equipment, my spare mags, and my laser designator and got in a nice, slightly less cold than average foxhole. All around us, I heard the hiss of alien lasers striking into the ground around the area inaccurately and the crack of our retaliatory counter fire. Both of which were really just meant to suppress the enemy at this range. The Aliens made landfall later that day, but boy did we have a nasty surprise for them. Their landing sites were rendered into glass by nuclear weapons the minute they committed to any given landing zone. Poor bastards, I wouldn’t wish that fate upon anyone. Yet, I delivered that fate for thousands of them, I called out coordinates into the Coms, and marked them with a laser designator. About 30-60 seconds later, a nuke, airburst, or kinetic strike hit their positions. Their laser fire tried to find our silos, our mobile batteries, and our subs. They weren’t having the best luck with that. The flash of ionized air was almost as common as the mushroom clouds of our low yield nukes. The sound and light of it all was overwhelming. It was beautiful, and horrifying in equal measure. It was a symphony of artillery, and I had the honor of conducting it. My baton, my designator. My tailcoat, a suit of Battle Plate. I was caught up in the flow of it so much, that I nearly caused a blue on blue. After that mishap; I was relieved of duty, and rotated back so I could rest. Present day, Shil, Shil'Vati Imperium Sgt. Everett Janson As'lia turned to me first and asked “Mr. Janson, what unit were you in?” I replied with “93rd mechanized, at Aton ridge.” “What did you do during the conflict?” I gave a grim smile and said “Don’t you mean the invasion?” This answer seemed to make her wince in discomfort, but she didn’t answer. I didn’t care either way. “I was a FISTer, I called in artillery, directed orbital fire, and did my best to blunt your forces' advances,” I answered. “Did a good job too.” She didn’t seem to fully understand the significance of my post. Next she asked “Why did you fight? You could have had a nice life anywhere else, but you chose to fight in a backwater in your outer rim.” I truly smiled at that one. Time to spread some Directorate propaganda. I spoke carefully, “I fought because I believe in the Directorate, not the government or the powerful, but the people. I fight for the people and their security.” She states impassively. “That is an admirable goal.” She continues by asking me “did you have friends in the army?” I reply with, “ I had some great friends, sadly I haven’t kept in touch with them” She then asked “have you killed anyone”... continued in the comments

2024.04.24 13:38 samx3i The meaning of the American History X subplot

My wife and I are watching the entirety of the IMDb Top 250 as a fun little movie project. Last night was American History X, which definitely deserves its place on that list.
The thing I find myself thinking about most every time I see this movie is the subplot that basically sandwiches the film.
SPOILERS FOR A QUARTER CENTURY OLD MOVIE AHEAD
One of our two leads, Danny Vinyard (played by Edward Furlong) is a teenager in high school. A white high schooler is taking a beating from three black students for allegedly telling the teacher that Little Henry (played by Jason Bose Smith)--was cheating.
Danny Vinyard exits a bathroom stall, confronts Little Henry who talks a little smack, and Danny responds by taking a long drag off his cigarette and blowing the smoke in his face. Little Henry lets it go because he has to get to class. Danny helps the bullying victim up, telling him he needs to stand up for himself.
As the film concludes, we return to that same bathroom. Danny uses a urinal and in walks Little Henry, this time with a loaded handgun and shoots Danny repeatedly, killing him.
So what's your take on this subplot? The film's other lead, Edward Norton's Derek Vinyard, is the real star and focus of the plot in which he kills two black men seeking some sort of retribution for an incident at a local basketball court. His incarceration changes him significantly, partly seeing fellow neo Nazi skinheads in prison not having any real ideals they stick to, befriending a black inmate (Lamont played by Guy Torry), and his continued friendship and support from Dr. Bob Sweeny (played by Avery Brooks).
Derek gets through to his younger brother Danny and helps realize all the hate and propaganda is bullshit and fuel for angry youths who aren't actually doing anything to improve their or anyone else's situation; they're just lashing out stupidly.
Derek and Danny tear down all the Nazi propaganda and iconography and seem to be headed down a new path, all for Danny to get killed over something that didn't really seem to have anything to do with race to begin with.
So then I can't help wondering... is Derek going to go back to the way he was? His father planted the seeds of racism, his father's murder radicalized him, and then Cameron (played by Stacy Keach) turned him into the Nazi thug.
Is the film suggesting this fairly maleable character is going to turn back to his Nazi ways since his brother was murdered by a black teen, or is "What did I do?" as he's holding his brother's body implying he's taking responsibility? That he's not blaming others anymore?
But then... how is this his fault? Aside from Danny being white and Little Henry being black, race doesn't seem to be a factor. Yes, Danny blew smoke in Henry's face, but Henry was bullying a kid and maybe Danny would've done the same thing to a white bully. It didn't really seem like the bullying nor the smoke blowing were necessarily a racist thing either way.
I'd be interested in reading other people's thoughts on this subplot or even just how people feel about it.

Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev decided to launch the withdrawal of the Russian "peacekeepers" from Karabakh

The troops were deployed as peacekeepers but allowed Azerbaijan to illegally blockade the ethnic Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh and commit an ethnic cleansing in 2023. Azerbaijani opposition forces have since urged Aliyev to remove the Russian soldiers since the mission was accomplished and there was "no point in keeping them".
On Wednesday, Russia and Azerbaijan confirmed the decision to launch the withdrawal of the contingent without allowing the minimum 5-year term to end. Video of the column was posted on social media, allegedly showing their withdrawal. Another video.
The press wrote that the control of the Dadivank church in occupied Nagorno-Karabakh was transferred to Azerbaijani authorities a few days ago. Azerbaijani authorities have an extensive record of desecrating Armenian churches and cultural monuments.
New images were circulated from Azerbaijani-occupied Shushi, showing the desecration of St. Ghazanchetsots Cathedral. This church was bombed twice during the 2020 war by Azerbaijani forces with the use of Turkish-made guided munitions. It injured several civilians located inside the church. The Human Rights Watch noted that the two attacks "suggest that the church, a civilian object with cultural significance, was an intentional target despite the absence of evidence that it was used for military purposes."

interview with Armenia's lawyer Yeghishe Kirakosyan about the Armenia v. Azerbaijan trial at World Court

Context in Tuesday report: "Armenia asks World Court to pursue ethnic cleansing case against Azerbaijan."
REPORTER: What's the latest?
LAWYER: The Court heard the preliminary objections by Azerbaijan in the suit brought by Armenia [about state-sponsored racism and hate propaganda targeting ethnic Armenians]. Azerbaijan argues that the Court is not authorized to hear this case. Azerbaijan's counter-claims against Armenia are completely baseless and we responded to it yesterday. Azerbaijan will respond to our arguments today. Armenia will make its final statement on Friday to conclude this preliminary phase. The next case will begin next week, this time Azerbaijan v. Armenia, again about the Court's jurisdiction.
REPORTER: What do we want?
LAWYER: At this phase, we want the Court to rule against Azerbaijan's claim that the Court has no jurisdiction over this case. Azerbaijan's argument is completely baseless.
REPORTER: Why does Azerbaijan believe the Court has no right to hear this case?
LAWYER: (1) Paragraph 23 of the convention on racial discrimination states that parties must attempt to negotiate before they sue each other. We argued in Court that we only filed the lawsuit after it was evident that any possible negotiation window was closed and pointless because of Azerbaijan's actions. (2) Azerbaijan argues that the suit filed by Armenia does not fall under the article on racial discrimination convention. They want to isolate and present the violations during the war merely as ordinary war crimes tied to the war. We expected this from Azerbaijan, but we presented our counter-arguments: The Azerbaijani government had created an atmosphere of hatred towards ethnic Armenians prior to the war. Moreover, we presented the war as a result of this decades-long campaign of hatred.
REPORTER: Is the law on "Armenia's side"?
LAWYER: Armenia's lawsuits are strongly backed by facts, whereas Azerbaijan's legal actions are mirrored responses. They want to create an artificial sense of equilibrium to show that they, too, have "facts" to present.
REPORTER: Did you mention the destruction of Armenian cultural heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh in the lawsuit?
LAWYER: Yes. Erasing or falsifying history to remove ethnic Armenian traces is a form of racial discrimination by the state. We described this in detail in the Court. More evidence will be presented. The World Court has already required Azerbaijan to protect Armenian cultural sites in a prior order.
REPORTER: What about the return of Nagorno-Karabakh refugees?
LAWYER: In November 2023 the World Court mentioned the right of ethnic Armenians to return to Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan is still required to create the necessary conditions. Sadly Azerbaijan has not complied with the order. When the ongoing lawsuit advances from this preliminary phase to the main phase, we will discuss the NK Armenians' right to return, and the rights of Armenia-based Armenians and Diasporans. The violation of racial convention affects every ethnic Armenian around the world.
REPORTER: When?
LAWYER: The preliminary phase should end and the verdict should come in late 2024 or early 2025, followed by the launch of the main phase to investigate all evidence.
REPORTER: Azerbaijan refused to comply with the previous World Court order. Will they comply with this one?
LAWYER: Azerbaijan continues to ignore international law but this is going to bite them in the long run. It is already having consequences. The legal processes are slow, the legal processes don't always lead to immediate results, but they are very important. This is a long-term process. Equip with patience.
REPORTER: What's your response to those who claim these legal processes are pointless?
LAWYER: It doesn't take much effort to sit on a chair and express an opinion without making an in-depth analysis. That type of rhetoric is dangerous for Armenia. We must strengthen our ties to the international legal system, be a full member of the international community, and follow international law. It was an important decision by Amenia to join the International Criminal Court.
REPORTER: It doesn't sound like the Armenian government wants to drop the lawsuits against Azerbaijan, after all.
LAWYER: The statement about mutually dropping suits was about possible developments in the distant future. There is no decision in Armenia to drop the lawsuits. Azerbaijan says the lawsuits hinder the peace efforts, while we argue that these lawsuits strengthen the basis and create the conditions for a stable peace. For example, the preamble of the racial convention states that its enforcement is meant to ensure peace. Armenia demands Azerbaijan to end the violation of this convention, and Armenia demands compensation for the violations.

Pashinyan visited Tavush again to discuss the border delimitation with border residents

Some analysts believe Pashinyan bought time ahead of the April 5 meeting in Brussels and eased the tensions on the border by not outright rejecting the idea of transferring the control of 4 Soviet-era Azeri villages to Azerbaijan; they believe there are no plans to give these territories. Others believe he will transfer the territories soon in exchange for the deployment of (less militarized) border guards and more stability with the replacement of a "line of contact" with a "border" (as done in Shurnukh). Others believe it's an attempt to pressure Azerbaijan to accept a map and launch a larger delimitation effort that will overall benefit Armenia when the territories of 31 Armenian villages are returned.
These are parts from Pashinyan's Wednesday meeting with border residents.
RESIDENT: You made promises during the 2021 campaign but didn't keep them. Isn't it best if you resign and declare snap elections and continue with this plan if people vote for you again?
PASHINYAN: We worked on every promise made during the 2021 campaign and I spoke about it in parliament in detail. My third resignation would not have any impact on geopolitical and global events. The role of a leader is to work on a program and change it as necessary to adapt to new conditions as things change around the country. Not all of my decisions are popular but I'm doing it for the sake of Armenia at the expense of my personal popularity. You will decide whether you vote for us in 2026 or not. Our efforts are aimed at turning Armenia into an independent state so it won't be a fortpost. I want to see a garden in front of houses instead of constantly encroaching trenches. I want to see a border instead of a line of contact. That border must have a checkpoint and you will decide whether to have contact with Azeris or not. I know why I'm sacrificing myself and the well-being of my family. It's for the independent Republic of Armenia.
Margara, Armavir, is just 50 meters away from the Turkish border with the Turkish army nearby. We want to achieve similar peace in Tavush and I expect your understanding and cooperation.
Last time I promised to involve you in the border delimitation commission's work. We have since created a working group representing the villages and regions. They will routinely meet the border commission and be present during border visits so they can keep their villagers informed.
Right now most of the tension is around ensuring the security of Kirants and Berkaber; we are building a school there. This is a work that must be done with the help of border commissions and armed forces. It's a difficult task but this is a positive process that will confirm Armenia's border. I grew up in these forests [Pashinyan is from Ijevan] and I want this process to advance so we can have peace and prosperity in this region. To be honest, my optimism continues to grow with the advancement of this process. We have a very good chance to achieve something.
REPORTER: [asks about a nearby bridge, unintelligable]
PASHINYAN: We have the 1976 map and we know our borders with millimeter precision. If necessary, we can build a new bridge next to the existing one so you can continue to use that road. It's not a matter of many kilometers, it's a small area. We will repair and build as many roads as necessary. This is not an issue of roads, this is primarily an issue of the security of Armenia and Tavush borders. You must be allowed to trade with nearby Azeris and develop your local economy. No one can give a 100% guarantee but we can reach 90% and above if we take steps. The alternative is war and conflict. The regional bespredel needs to end, and the South Caucasus must live under the rule of law. There is international law, there is a border, and there are rights. Armenia will be 100 times stronger if we stand on what's legitimately ours.

... Tavush residents reveal details from their meeting with Pashinyan

RESIDENT1: Our concern is the security of the road. Pashinyan said there is no decision yet and they don't plan to withdraw the Armenian forces in the near future.
REPORTER: One of the residents claims Pashinyan told them there would be "mutual concessions".
RESIDENT2: I don't trust Azerbaijan.
REPORTER: Pashinyan said we can build an alternative road.
RESIDENT2: Well, that road currently travels through the border. If Azeris close this road then we should close their road that travels through Armenian territories [presumably south of Mt. Odundag]. Azeris are currently using our lands for pasture.
REPORTER: Pashinyan earlier said that there will be war if we don't do this delimitation on 4 villages.
RESIDENT2: In the 90s we were fighting with rifles and slingshots. Today we are behind Azerbaijan in technological advancement and manpower. I don't want a war today. There are so many traitors and sellouts who betrayed us during the 2020 war for pennies.
REPORTER: Can you give us details from the meeting?
RESIDENT3: No. I know what your agenda is. I'm satisfied with this man's [Pashinyan's] work. For 32 years nobody cared about our access to our 800 hectares of land [presumably occupied by Azerbaijan south of Odundag]. Now they manipulate this topic. Who are all these people who spend all day in our village? [parliamentary opposition factions have started to regularly visit border villages to "show support" and rally protests to prevent Pashinyan's efforts]. They had never heard of our village before. They confused Berkaber with Berkavan during a speech. What is this?
REPORTER: Do you support the surrender of those 4 villages?
RESIDENT3: Whose villages? I'm 77 and my father died at the age of 90. His father, in turn, was very old [and lived through the events]. He told me these are Turkish [Azeri] villages. These are not "four villages in Tavush". Berkaber is Tavush, Kirants is Tavush, but not those. Why do you distort facts by referring to them as "four villages of Tavush"? People living in cities think this is about the Tavush/Ijevan territories.
REPORTER: But what about your safety after the delimitation?
RESIDENT3: It's so good you have finally come here, after so many years, to worry about our safety. Where were the parents of concerned figures when we, the residents, were protecting our borders with hunting rifles? "We stand with you," they say today. That's great, but you are going to disappear as soon as Azeris fire a single shot.
REPORTER: What did Pashinyan tell you?
RESIDENT4: He said we aren't "surrendering lands", we are going for a "bilateral compromise" solution. The Berkaber lands currently under Azeri control must be exchanged for their lands. The people support the exchange scenario. People also agree that Azeris should not cross the river. Pashinyan said he is still negotiating and will take all of our demands into consideration. We opposed Pashinyan's offer to build an alternative road. We oppose the transfer of the "triangle" area.
REPORTER: What did Pashinyan speak about?
RESIDENT5: He complained about those who live in Yerevan, who don't even know where our villages are, talking about "surrendering Armenian villages" when in reality it's about Soviet-era Azeri villages. He spoke about the layout and fragmentation of lands and our lands. He spoke about legal documents proving property ownership. I'm glad to see so many visitors to our village, and I'm glad to see you too. We don't want to be forgotten.
REPORTER: In the neighboring village Voskepar, Pashinyan told residents they have resolved 90% of the disagreements with Azerbaijan.
RESIDENT6: He told us nothing has been decided yet and that some issues must be discussed and resolved.
REPORTER: Do you support the transfer of 4 villages?
RESIDENT6: Nobody supports it but nobody wants war. Everyone wants peace. And it's 3 villages, not 4. And the 3rd one is only partly under our control.
REPORTER: Wouldn't your village be in danger after the transfer of these territories?
RESIDENT7: We, the residents of Berkaber, do not mind if Azeris take the 680 hectares of land near our village in exchange for keeping the hill near Voskepar under Armenian control for safety and accessibility reasons. It can be a solution.
REPORTER: Have you asked Pashinyan about this?
RESIDENT7: Didn't have a chance. Listen, don't cuss Pashinyan for this. We want a distinct state border; we will protect it ourselves. Give us a border so we know where to stand.
REPORTER: What 90% agreement was Pashinyan talking about?
RESIDENT8: Well, he said 90% of what people want, can be accomplished. He urged us to get the news directly from him and not trust rumors. He said he will try to do everything in our favor, he is trying to find solutions raised by us. Let's wait and see. If he acts against us, we will protest.
REPORTER: Do you think Pashinyan changed his plans as a result of the protests after his first visit?
RESIDENT8: Maybe. He respected our opinion and came to talk to us directly. We actually weren't expecting him to return [lol], but the man came and spoke with us again. He said he will not reach agreements behind our backs.
REPORTER: What did he tell you about those 4 [Azeri] villages?
RESIDENT8: He said he is negotiating to keep Azeris on the other side of the river in Lower Voskepar (Aşağı Əskipara) [possibly what the other villager was saying about the need to keep the hill near Voskepar under Armenian control]. They are currently negotiating to exchange the territories in Berkaber [presumably south of Mt. Odundag] with the territory near Lower Askipara [presumably to maintain the control of the road].
REPORTER: Did Pashinyan speak about building an alternative road?
RESIDENT8: He suggested launching a process of building an alternative road but people are against it. We have one right now and need to keep it.
REPORTER: What about the deployment of border guards and withdrawal of heavy forces?
RESIDENT8: That will come after the negotiations. After they delimit the border they can discuss the border guard issue. It's normal to replace forces with guards as long as both sides do it.
REPORTER: Did Pashinyan warn about a possible war this time around?
RESIDENT8: No. We didn't ask him. Our conversation was quite honest. //
Azatutyun interviewed several residents of Voskepar present at the meeting and they were satisfied with the discussions.

ranking ruling party MP says it is time for Armenian companies to start raising standards and stop exporting "fake cognac"

Babken Tunyan is the deputy head of the parliamentary economic committee. He believes it's time to take steps to raise product standards in Armenia so the country can diversify its exports and export destinations.
TUNYAN: We have government programs that subsidize the import of modern technologies and the hiring of experts to help our businesses raise their standards, but we need tools for oversight.
For example, today Armenia exports large quantities of cognac [to Russia] but everyone knows that most of it is not real cognac. We need to decide what we want: (A) Continue to export fake cognac and earn revenues at the expense of destroying our reputation and our ability to export to other markets, or (B) set stricter standards that define what cognac is, and monitor it.
Option B will be painful for some businesses, and the state will receive less revenue for a brief period, but this is the path we must choose if we want a higher-quality economy. The same is true for dairy and other products. We aren't even sure if the quality is sufficient for Armenian consumers.
QUESTION: What if Russia decides to fuck us over and cuts the supply of energy and trade?
TUNYAN: Independence comes with a price. The population must be prepared to face hardship and frequent controlled power outages, but we hope it won't come down to that because our actions toward diversification aren't done against Russia; they are done to help Armenia.
REPORTER: Why did you ban Russian MIR payment cards? What will happen to the monetary transfers to/from Russia?
TUNYAN: And what will happen to Armenia's financial system if we violate these Western sanctions or don't investigate the source of money transfers? Our banking system would be isolated from the rest of the world. We didn't ban MIR. The Central Bank made a decision. The [Russian] VTB bank is still accepting MIR.

No More Lies. My Grandfather Was a Nazi. Jonas Noreika (with commentary).
No More Lies. My Grandfather Was a Nazi.
In Lithuania, he was celebrated as a hero. But we can’t move on until we admit what he really did.
[The comments are in italics and square brackets, followed by BalticSSRs signature at the end. The rest belongs to Silvia Foti, unless otherwise specified. - BalticSSRs]
Silvia Foti’s grandfather Jonas Noreika. Family photograph.
By Silvia Foti
Ms. Foti is a journalist and the author of the forthcoming “The Nazi’s Granddaughter: How I Learned My Grandfather Was a War Criminal.”
When I was growing up in Chicago during the Cold War, my parents taught me to revere my Lithuanian heritage. We sang Lithuanian songs and recited Lithuanian poems; after Lithuanian school on Saturdays, I would eat Lithuanian-style potato pancakes.
My grandfather, Jonas Noreika, was a particularly important part of my family story: He was the mastermind of a 1945-1946 revolt against the Soviet Union, and was executed. A picture of him in his military uniform hung in our living room. Today, he is a hero not just in my family. He has streets, plaques and a school named after him. He was awarded the Cross of the Vytis, Lithuania’s highest posthumous honor.
On her deathbed in 2000, my mother asked me to take over writing a book about her father. I eagerly agreed. But as I sifted through the material, I came across a document with his signature from 1941 and everything changed. The story of my grandfather was much darker than I had known.
I learned that the man I had believed was a savior who did all he could to rescue Jews during World War II had, in reality, ordered all Jews in his region of Lithuania to be rounded up and sent to a ghetto where they were beaten, starved, tortured, raped and then murdered. More than 95 percent of Lithuania’s Jews died during World War II, many of them killed with the eager collaboration of their neighbors.
Suddenly, I no longer had any idea who my grandfather was, what Lithuania was, and how my own story fit in. How could I reconcile two realities? Was Jonas Noreika a monster who slaughtered thousands of Jews or a hero who fought to save his country from the Communists?
[Even "moderate" bourgeois nationalists use self-contradictory phrases like "save the country from the Communists" which sounds as stupid as "saving people from food", "saving people from a happy life" or "saving them from the defeat of nazism". The Soviet Union destroyed 85% of all nazi forces and played a key role in uncovering and investigating the Holocaust. The Socialist Revolution of 1940 transformed Lithuania from an agrarian fascist state into a highly-developed and industrialized country. But the nationalist nonsense about "saving the country from communism" is now state ideology in the Baltics. Credo quia absurdum. - BalticSSRs]
Those questions began a journey that led me to understand the power of the politics of memory and the importance of getting the recounting right, even at great personal cost. I concluded that my grandfather was a man of paradoxes, just as Lithuania — a country caught between the Nazi and Communist occupations during World War II, then trapped behind the Iron Curtain for the next 50 years — is full of contradictions.
[Again with the neo-nazi "double genocide" Holocaust denialism. So who's better? Those who perpetrated the Holocaust and served the German fascists? Or those who put an end to these atrocities and punished those responsible? Truly, a paradox. The nationalists, as usual, are too cowardly to deny the Holocaust and the Nuremberg Trials openly. So they hide behind this "double genocide" nonsense. And the Lithuanian people overthrew the fascist government of Smetona all by themselves in 1940, by declaring a general strike. So the Lithuanian people occupied themselves too? - BalticSSRs]
In this way, perhaps, Lithuania is like many other countries that spent 50 years under Soviet occupation. During this time, there was a deep freeze on the truth: Lithuanians were only allowed to talk about how many Soviet citizens were killed during World War II. References to Jewish victims were scrubbed away by the occupiers. I would like to think that if Lithuania had been a free and independent nation after World War II, it might have acknowledged its own role in the Holocaust.
[This is a damn lie. The Soviet Union has always acknowledged the systematic mass murder of the Soviet and European Jews by the fascist invaders AND the nationalist collaborators. Towns in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have Soviet memorial plaques in memory of the Jewish residents that were mass murdered. The Soviet people were united - the Slavs, the Jews, the Balts the Romas, the Greeks - all were subjected to the Holocaust. The hitlerites wanted to exterminate the SOVIET PEOPLE as a whole. Silvie Foti's demagogy vilifies the Soviet people by giving one targeted group mention, while omitting everyone else. And then she accuses the Soviet Union of doing what she just did in the article. The last sentence is a gem. "Free and independent" as Finland, for example, a known nazi ally and a Holocaust perpetrator? We know how West Germany "acknowledged" its role in the Holocaust - by sheltering high-ranking nazis and giving them cushy jobs. - Baltic SSRs]
https://preview.redd.it/sz0lvhpigquc1.jpg?width=549&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6abaca496accd70c17a47995e96cdd5a7e589fba
[the West "acknowledging" its role in the Holocaust - BalticSSRs]
Correcting historical memory turned out to be dangerous. When I publicly questioned the official story of my grandfather’s life, I was vilified by the Lithuanian community in Chicago and in Lithuania. I was called an agent of President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Lithuanian leaders still believe their country’s identity depends on holding onto its heroes, even at the cost of the truth.
[The snake is eating its own tail. But Foti had it easy. Compare that to Rūta Vanagaitė who actually lives in Lithuania. She published detailed research on the Lithuanian nazi collaborators and their leading role in the Holocaust in Lithuania. Vanagaitė was immediately declared a "threat to national security". Her book (How Did It Happen?) was immediately withdrawn in Lithuania - now de facto banned - and she was forced to publicly "apologize" for her "misleading claims" to avoid prison. - BalticSSRs]
The twists and turns of Jonas Noreika’s short life made it easier to hide the bad by accentuating the good. And yet there was so much bad.
[If serving the nazis and murdering Lithuanian peasants and workers is "good", then we have to question Foti's definition of good and perhaps her sanity, as well. - BalticSSRs]
In 1933, as a young soldier in the Lithuanian Army, he wrote “Raise Your Head Lithuanian,” Lithuania’s equivalent of “Mein Kampf,” which incited hate toward Jews as a solution to Lithuania’s problems. In June 1941, he led an uprising against the Soviets, even as he was collaborating with the Nazis. In July, he ordered the murder of all of the 2,000 Jews in Plunge, the town from which he led the uprising. In August, the Germans welcomed him as the new district chief of the Siauliai region, and the same month he signed orders to send thousands of Jews to their eventual deaths. Under his watch, roughly 8,000 Jews were killed.
[Organizing fascist uprisings against the Soviet government IS helping the nazis. These nationalist groups never, ever fought against the nazis. Only the Soviet partisans did. Any Baltic anti-Soviet movement was affiliated with the nazis and/or recruited by the Abwehr - the nazi military intelligence. - BalticSSRs]
In the version of history that is now celebrated by Lithuanians, my grandfather and others like him were forced to sign those documents by the Germans. But when I dug deeper, I learned that becoming district chief brought him the best house in the region, about 1,000 reichsmarks each month and a job for my grandmother. That sounded to me more like temptation than coercion.
He did stand up to the Nazis, not by saving Jews but by trying to stymie recruitment for the SS. In March 1943, he was sent to a Nazi concentration camp. He was released in January 1945, then conscripted by the Red Army. Later that year, he began organizing the revolt against the Soviets, who had turned from Lithuania’s liberators to its occupiers. The Soviets captured him the next March. He was executed in February 1947 at the age of 36.
[This is another big lie used by the Baltic fascists. They are trying to paint the nationalists sent to the concentration camps as "victims of nazism". That's exactly WHY they were sent there in the first place. Realizing that the war is being lost, the nazis formed organized groups of collaborator fronts cleverly disguised as "independent/democratic patriots". Sending them to a concentration camp was a legend to create a convincing sob story of a prisoner who "miraculously" "escaped". In reality, these Baltic and Ukrainian nationalists were known as "honorary inmates". They virtually didn't work, enjoyed full rations and even received allowances to buy additional food, cigarettes and fresh newspapers. The Stutthof and Sachsenhausen camps had many "honorary inmates" acting as nazi spies and "patriotic" fronts, like Stepan Bandera and Bruno Kalniņš. By the end of the war, the average survival rate of death camp inmates was 1-2 months at best. If Noreika had been an actual prisoner, he would have most likely died. His "stymieing the recruitment" is just a part of the same fairy tale. The nazis recruited 36,000 Lithuanian auxiliary troops. "Stymieing" alright. - BalticSSRs]
Transforming a Nazi collaborator into a national hero requires four steps of manipulation. One step shifts all the blame to the Nazis, even though my grandfather, like many Lithuanians, willingly participated in slaughtering Jews. The second step creates a victim narrative, asking how a Jew killer could be sent to a Nazi concentration camp. The third step discredits counternarratives by labeling them as Communist propaganda told by enemies of the state. The final step refuses to accept that two seemingly contradictory truths can coexist: Noreika bravely fought against the Communists and shamefully participated in killing Jews.
[That is correct, but not entirely. Foti doesn't ask the question WHY the Lithuanian nationalists are doing this. The answer is based on class. The German fascist invasion gave chance for the defeated Lithuanian bourgeoisie and landowners to reclaim their former property - the fields, the factories and resources - the means of production that they lost during the Socialist Revolution of 1940, which they did not anticipate. The Lithuanian nationalists, in a typical nationalist fashion, are willing to whore themselves out to the devil himself if it means reclaiming at least some of the private property. Even if it means being a German/British/American slave and selling the people of Lithuania for pennies. A nation is a bourgeois concept. It is the essence of bourgeois domination over the people, especially so during the age of imperialist capitalism - the final stage of capitalism - BalticSSRs]
After researching his life for the past 20 years, I’ve dared to call my grandfather a Nazi even though he never officially joined the party. He worked with the Nazis, acted like them, was paid by them, hated Jews like them and, like them, facilitated torture and murder.
Did Lithuanian officials actively hide the truth because it would make the country look bad? Or were they in genuine denial in a democracy too fragile to face its own history? Unfortunately, this isn’t just about my grandfather. He is a microcosm of the entire national story, and that national story echoes across Eastern Europe.
[Our previous note makes it obvious that this is deliberate. It is a lie. And it doesn't matter whether it's a fabrication or a "convenient" lie by omission. The fact that the Baltic governments have to rely on these damn lies just to exist shows the essence of bourgeois nationalist hegemony in the region - it is a continuation of the same capitalist class, the same imperialism. In a sense, it is a continuation of the German fascist project, under a different guise. - BalticSSRs].
The passage of time has created the space to speak about the truth, but also increased the urgency of doing so before remaining memories fade and another generation passes. Analysis of a dark past is always traumatic. But we will never achieve clarity and healing if we base our history on lies. Although later generations might not know the details, they will still experience the emotional pain passed down from parent to child to grandchild.
[Again, the Baltic nationalists "stretch" it out deliberately, so that the last living witnesses would die. Otherwise, they could seriously harm the nationalist myth-making. - BalticSSRs].
I have made my peace with my grandfather. I have vowed to reveal his crimes by giving witness to the truth, and I have vowed to try to correct Lithuania’s memory of the Holocaust, in part by asking for honors bestowed on him to be stripped. This can lead to reconciliation between Lithuanians and Jews as we remember what happened and learn from it to ensure it never happens again. Perhaps acknowledging this truth will allow Lithuanians to have a healthier national identity and a pride in our poetry, our language, our food — but not our dark past.
[The workers of the world are already reconciled by their shared class. We need not any nationalists who are trying to teach us "sympathy" for the oppressors and killers. It is obvious that two Lithuanias exist - Lithuania of the working man, where the people, regardless of their creed or nationality, can live and prosper in peace. Lithuania of Marytė Melnikaitė, Petras Cvirka and Antanas Sniečkus. That is the Socialist Lithuania. And the bourgeois Lithuania - the realm of terror, hatred and lies. "Lithuania" of Jonas Noreika and Adolfas Ramanauskas. The two can not ever reconcile. Because such "reconciliation" demands total surrender of the Working Lithuania to the bourgeois Lithuania. This means "reconciling" with a python that will eat you alive. That is the capitalist Lithuania of today. And it is obvious which Lithuania the honest working people should be proud of. Being proud of your revolutionary past, present and future. That is what acknowledging the truth really means! The article itself is a rather clumsy attempt by "moderate" nationalists to sit on two chairs - to demonize the Soviet Union AND to distance themselves from fascism - the latter is the logical continuation of a capitalist dictatorship. The petty bourgeoisie want to have their cake and eat it. - Baltic SSRs].

2024.04.16 00:01 StalinAnon The flaws in Capitalists funded Hitler into power.

If you have been on the internet and see debate around capitalism vs socialism in Nazi Germany. There is this very common belief that Capitalists funded Hitler into Power. There are many issues with this. Impressivecourage466 listed 24 individuals as Capitalists wide support for Hitler, but out of those 24 individual only 2 could have been said to have been Capitalists that funded Hitler into power. Even then those 2 can not stand up to further scrutiny than "were they capitlalists?" and "did they fund Hitler in anyway?"
In this topic however there are many issues, one of which was who was funded and another was when. Bergbauverein, Hermann, Steinke, Osram, IG Farben, Lange, AEG, Springorum, and Accumulatorenfabrik AG gave a grand total of 2.1 million Reichsmarks to Hitler between the 23rd of February to 13th March 1933. To a keen observer however you might have realized something Hitler was already Chancellor in January 1933. So of the supposed 3m Reichsmarks that funded Hitler into power came, after he was already in power. You then have individuals like, Kirill Vladimirovič Romanov, who gave 500000 gold marks to Ludendorff which only equated to rough 13000 Reichsmarks, this was also before Hitler had any presence. Even with people like Gustav Krupp, he gave around a Million Reichsmarks again after Hitler was already in office. Sir Henri Deterding also never gave money to the Nazi, he bought agriculture products to send it Germany.
There was another interesting instance of where Leftist misportray the events that actually occurred, industrialists said in the even of a Marxist uprising they promise 5 million Reichsmarks to fight the uprising. Hitler was not just given 5 million Reichsmarks and because the communists never rose up he never got the money. Again this was After January 1933 when Hitler was already Chancellor.
There were in reality only a Few Capitalists that funded Hitler in any way before he got into power. Emil Kirdorf was 1 of them however he stepped away from the part and stopped funding the party only after a year of membership in 1928. Bernhard Reemtsma and for him he didn't so much finance Hitler's rise in as much as he financed anyone that was in charge of tax legislation. Funny enough for Reemtsma, he meet with Hitler in 1932 July and after that meeting his cigarette ads were plastered in Nazi newspaper, this was not so much Reemtsma funding Hitler as Hitler making a moral compromised to get campgain funds. Since Nazis hated cigarettes and were concerned about public health. Hjamlmar Schacht a wasn't party member did not fund Hitler into power given he was unemployed during Hitler's Rise. More interesting note on Schacht is that I have never seen evidence that Schacht gave money to the Nazi party at all. Schacht then spent time in a concentration camp. And Finally, Fritz Thyssen he gave the Nazi party a loan, which the Nazis had to repay. Thyssen did give money to Ludendorff but not Hitler, and this was during a the time Hitler was not a major player. Thyssen also had his business take away from, spent time in a concentration camp, and was extremely critical of their economic policies.
There were business that supported Hitler, just like there were generals, artists, novelists, and politicians. But it was not "capitalists" support it was a few capitalists supported the Nazi rise.
To Quote Richard Evans:
Nazi student leaders often got themselves deeply into debt by paying personally for posters and pamphlets with many others it must have been the same. The Nazi party depended on such commitment; much of its power and dynamism came from the fact that it was not dependent on big business or bureaucratic institutions such as trade unions for its financial support as the 'bourgeois' parties and the Social Democrats to varying degrees were, still less on the secret subsidies of a foreign power, along the lines of the Moscow-financed Communists. The result of all this was that business proved not much more willing to finance the Nazi Party than it had been before. True, one or two individuals like Fritz Thyssen were enthusiastic, and provided funds to subsides, the extravagant tastes of leading Nazis, such as Hermann Goring and Gregor Strasser. And, in broad terms, the speech was reassuring. When the time came, it made it that much easier for big business to come round to the support of the Nazi Party. But in January 1932 this still lay some way in the future. For the time being, the Nazi Party continued, as before, to finance its activities mainly through the voluntary contributions of its members, through entry fees to its meetings, through the income from its press and publications and through donations from small firms and businesses rather than large ones.
And to quote Turner:
Beginning in the early 1930's and continuing down to the present, such charges have been repeatedly made. they form the core of one of the earliest and most persistent explanations, for the origins of the Third Reich. That explanation accords a decisive role to bug business and classifies Hitler's regime as a manifestation of capitalism. That view have proved too doctrinaire and reductionist for most historians, who prefer analysis that takes a larger range of factors into consideration. Yet because of the surface plausibility of the charges leveled against big business and the ceaseless repetition of those charges, even mainline historians have, with few exceptions, felt obliged to include big business support among the factors contribution to the triumph of Nazism.
This topic has essentially been diluted into propaganda. After Hitler's rise, yes businesses attempted to try stay on good terms with the Regime but that does not mean they attempted to put him into power.
To put the bow on it, Hitler hated Capitalists:
The persistent war against German 'heavy industries' was the visible start of the internationalization of German economic life as envisaged by the Marxists. This, however, could only be brought to a successful conclusion by the victory which Marxism was able to gain in the Revolution. As I write these words, success is attending the general attack on the German State Railways which are now to be turned over to international capitalists. Thus 'International Social-Democracy' has once again attained one of its main objectives.
It was left to the Revolution to destroy this standard organization, until a time came when it was taken out of the hands of the nation and socialized, in the sense which the founders of the Republic had given to that word, namely, making it subservient to the international stock-exchange capitalists, who were the wire-pullers of the German Revolution.
The War was now a hopeless affair, and only the foolhardy could think of victory. It was not the people but the capitalists and the Monarchy who were interested in carrying on.
That objective was the destruction of the national economic system and the establishment of international capitalistic domination in its stead. And this goal has really been reached, thanks to the stupid credulity of the one side and the unspeakable treachery of the other.
Essentially every issue was because of Capitalist.
So I will end this with saying, just because it sounds nice does not mean it is. Capitalists did not fund Hitler into power, most investments capitalists made occurred after Hitler was in power, and this was not a guarantee that would be free from state influence. The Nazi policy was not Privatization in such private business flourished, and instead the policy was called Gleichschaltung or synchronization. With the entire goal of Nazification of society and "socializing" the people of Germany.
If you think I am wrong feel free to say as such however do not expect such a gross over generalization to go unchallenged since there is no legitimate evidence to support it.

2024.04.14 11:35 SwanUpbeat5909 You are offered a million dollars but must spend a year in this fictional dictatorship. Do you accept?

This is a minor dictator in my fictional story. Lets say someone offers you a million dollars but immediately before that you have to spend one full year in this guy's shithole. Do you accept:
Kazarin Navrael Veyvoyan,President of Republic of Vragaria and Chairman of National Autonomy Party of Vragaria
-has stayed in power for the part 35 years
-anyone who publicly criticizes him is forced to pay a fine
-only 52 legal TV channels, and 17 of those are just state owned propaganda
-ultranationalist isolationist one-party state described as authoritarian
-built a 30 ft (9 m) bronze statue of himself in capital
-requires all government buildings to contain portraits of him (!)
-made his own birthday a national holiday
-had the anthem rewritten to add a verse briefly mentioning him and had his name carved into the side of a mountain
-had only an 8th grade education but somehow thought he was qualified to run a country
-made his teenage nephew a colonel for his 18th birthday
-embezzled tax money to renovate his own house
-state propaganda claims that a new star appeared in the sky when he was born
-obese standing at 6'1 270 lbs,one of foreign media's favorite habits is mocking his immense gluttony
-censors anyone he disagrees with
-superstitious,had banks print notes with numbers divisible by 7 like 14 or 70 cuz he thought 7 was his lucky number
-net worth of $40 million, lives in a mansion on a mountain just outside the capital, his car costs $460k and he has a $700k yacht and he once spent $70k in a single year on importing booze, junk food and tobacco from other countries
-collects expensive silver watches, guns and jewelry and hoards said trinkets in his mansion
-said to smoke half a pack of cigarettes a day
-meanwhile statistics:82% literacy rate,10% of 15 million population lives below poverty line (so about 1.5 million dont make a sufficient income),ranked 27th worst country for press freedom and 58th out of 200 countries in GDP
-asked a TV channel owner to create a game show on the channel where contestants would compete over who could list the most compliments for the dictator and whoever won got a million dollars cash (basically you verbally kiss his ass to get rich)
-titled himself 'His Honorable Excellency'
Etc.
So your deal is this:
  1. You spend a year in a country with mediocre living condition ruled by an obese narcissist
  2. But you get a million dollars cash once you leave
Deal?

Fluoride Dilemma & the Legacy of Propaganda: How Edward Bernays Shaped Public ill Health
The recent landmark federal court case against the EPA has thrust the issue of water fluoridation back into the spotlight. And the evidence presented is deeply concerning. The plaintiffs, including the Fluoride Action Network, highlighted the 2022 systematic review by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) which found a staggering 52 out of 55 studies linked fluoride exposure to reduced IQ in children - a 95% consistency. If these findings are indicative of a widespread problem, the ramifications go far beyond just lower test scores. Diminished cognitive abilities and impaired brain development could fundamentally hamper a child's adaptability - their ability to process complex information, think critically, respond to environmental changes, and ultimately thrive in our rapidly evolving world.
Anecdotal accounts seem to corroborate this premise. Reports describe individuals exhibiting an uncanny indifference to even devastating news or unable to contextualize major events, a vacant gaze akin to a non-player character (NPC) in gaming. While mere anecdotes don't constitute proof, they raise disturbing questions about whether ubiquitous fluoride exposures could be numbing our collective ability to adapt as a society. This potential for mass cognitive dulling is eerily reminiscent of the tactics advocated by Edward Bernays, the so-called "father of public relations." Bernays, the nephew of Sigmund Freud, pioneered insidious propaganda and public relations techniques to mold opinions and consumption habits. His methods were employed by major corporations to boost profits, often at the expense of public health. It's worth noting that Bernays' grandson, Marc Bernays Randolph, co-founded Netflix, which has become a global platform for shaping public opinion and consumption habits in its own right.
Some of Bernays' notable campaigns and the broader propaganda efforts of his era include:
  1. Promoting bacon as a healthy breakfast food for the Beech-Nut Packing Company (1920s)
  2. Encouraging women to smoke cigarettes as a symbol of female empowerment for the American Tobacco Company (1920s)
  3. Helping to popularize fluoridation of public water supplies (1950s)
  4. Normalizing smoking, leading to a rise in smoking-related illnesses
  5. Promoting processed foods, such as Crisco vegetable oil, margarine, and refined sugars, as healthier alternatives to natural, whole foods, contributing to obesity, diabetes, and chronic health issues
  6. Downplaying the negative health effects of sugar consumption, likely contributing to the obesity epidemic
  7. Demonizing healthy fats and dietary cholesterol, leading to a shift towards unhealthy low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets
  8. Downplaying the risks of pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals used in agriculture, leading to environmental contamination and potential health risks
  9. Promoting prescription drugs as solutions to health problems, often downplaying side effects and the importance of lifestyle changes, contributing to an overreliance on medication
These are just a few examples of how propaganda campaigns during Bernays' time have had long-lasting impacts on public health and well-being. While not all of these campaigns can be directly attributed to Bernays himself, his pioneering techniques in public relations and advertising have undoubtedly influenced the way industries and interest groups shape public opinion and consumer behaviour, often prioritizing profit over public health. Some have even speculated that Bernays and Freud were aware of how EMF exposure and sleeping in electrified buildings could negatively impact blood and make people more susceptible to manipulation. Freud's own research into sleep and dreams may have played a role in this. Interestingly, Freud himself suffered from a severe cocaine addiction, which some attribute to the EMF exposure from sleeping on a metal bed in an electrified home, as the old wiring of the time emitted higher levels of ELF and radio frequencies. While this theory ventures into controversial territory, it raises intriguing questions about the potential unintended consequences of emerging technologies on both individual and societal health.
What is clear is that many of the dietary shifts and public health measures promoted by Bernays and his contemporaries have not produced the promised health benefits. In fact, many have directly contributed to the rise in chronic disease we see today. As we confront the evidence of fluoride's neurotoxicity, we must also grapple with this broader history of marketing trumping science in shaping public health policy. Critically examining the mistakes and manipulations of the past is essential if we wish to chart a healthier course forward. The fluoride lawsuit serves as a clarion call to question entrenched dogmas, scrutinize special interests, and place the well-being of the public and future generations above all else. Its hard to tell weather this master of coercing people was an utter genius as the ramifications go much further than this,
As we examine the potential health risks associated with the consumption of phosphoric acid in sodas, it's worth considering the historical context that may have contributed to the normalization of this practice. One influential figure who stands out in this regard is Edward Bernays, the pioneer of public relations and propaganda. While there is no direct evidence linking Bernays to the promotion of phosphoric acid in beverages, his history of shaping public opinion and consumption habits on behalf of corporate interests raises intriguing questions. Bernays' career was built on the idea that public relations could be used to mold public perceptions and drive consumer behaviour in ways that benefited his clients, often at the expense of public health.
Given Bernays' track record of working with food and beverage companies to promote their products, it's conceivable that he or his contemporaries in the public relations industry could have played a role in normalizing the use of phosphoric acid in soft drinks. This could have been achieved through a variety of tactics, such as:
  1. Downplaying potential health risks and emphasizing the benefits of phosphoric acid's tangy flavor and preservation properties.
  2. Framing the use of phosphoric acid as a marker of modernity, innovation, and technological advancement in the beverage industry.
  3. Influencing scientific research to generate favorable evidence for the safety and benefits of phosphoric acid while downplaying studies that raised concerns.
  4. Shaping government regulations to ensure that phosphoric acid remained legal and widely used in the food and beverage industry.
While these scenarios are speculative, they align with Bernays' known strategies and the broader influence of the public relations industry on shaping consumer habits and public health policies. The lack of direct evidence linking Bernays to the promotion of phosphoric acid in beverages does not rule out the possibility that he or his contemporaries played a role in normalizing this practice. As we continue to grapple with the health implications of food additives like phosphoric acid, it's crucial to consider the historical context and the ways in which public opinion and consumption habits have been shaped by powerful interests. By critically examining these influences and prioritizing public health over corporate profits, we can work towards a future where the food and beverage industry promotes, rather than undermines, the well-being of the population. The potential role of Edward Bernays and the public relations industry in normalizing the use of phosphoric acid in sodas serves as a reminder of the need for transparency, accountability, and scientific integrity in our food and beverage systems. Only by confronting these historical influences and demanding change can we hope to create a healthier, more sustainable future for ourselves and generations to come. It's hard to tell whether this master of coercing people was an utter genius, as the ramifications go much further than this.
The potential link between fluoride exposure and cognitive impairment, particularly in children, is indeed a serious concern that warrants further investigation and public discourse. The systematic review by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) that you mentioned, which found a high consistency of studies linking fluoride exposure to reduced IQ in children, is a significant finding that should not be dismissed. It highlights the need for more rigorous research to establish the causal relationship between fluoride and cognitive development, as well as to determine safe exposure levels.
The potential societal implications of widespread cognitive impairment is thought-provoking. A population with diminished critical thinking skills and adaptability could indeed have far-reaching consequences for social, economic, and political systems. However, it's important to note that anecdotal accounts, while concerning, do not constitute scientific evidence. More robust data is needed to support this premise.
The historical context provided, particularly the influence of Edward Bernays and the early days of public relations and propaganda, is relevant to the discussion. Bernays and his contemporaries undoubtedly played a significant role in shaping public opinion and consumption habits, often prioritizing corporate interests over public health. The promotion of water fluoridation, among other campaigns, is a prime example of how public health measures can be influenced by factors beyond scientific evidence.

On Philosophy and Science

By
Tyler Johnson

I feel terrible on the Invega injection. I must think about what I am doing and what I am saying to the people that work for me. That is without a doubt. My only goal today, may be, just to get through this life. That would suffice, sufficiently. Yes, to some degree, I am dismayed by the fact I must propel the use of enchantment to spellbind the demon of Schopenhauer to appear at my wits end where he will somehow implore me to write better. Writing just to write. Too manic. I will know when I have written a good piece. Maybe my place isn’t to be a good writer. Maybe I’m not a candidate. It’s okay. Life goes on. Suffering exists. There is a job to be done. I am still thankful for my inner workings. My suffering is more real now than ever. I feel everything more than ever; or so it seems. I write with chaotic rage. I have my own relationship with food, as they have their own. The image of God? More like the psychology of someone who is obsessed with themselves. Writing my thoughts till I rot. Till blood is no longer pumping through my veins. For what cause? For the cause of the shipwreck all. All born into fame. The real famine that is game. Wonder lust. Wonder lost. Paid the price. To serve my ship of DNA in fortune but not fame. In poverty possibly. But not riches. Yet not rags. At least it was not all about me. It was for animals. It was for prophecy.

An Evolutionary Perspective on Vegans for Health

Clearly, we are living in desperate times. People dying of water poisoning isn’t the entirety of the problem. The problem can come from nutritious value as well such food intake. Animal products do not cost as much as vegetation sources. Look at fast food restaurants’ price on cheeseburgers and salads to put it simply. Just perceive on a macro-economic scale, or globally, animal products are at a very low demand, while plant sources are very high. Rightfully so, plant sources should be in high demand, and cost more, because the supply is very limited for these products. Yet, we will blame this on the corporations or people running them. This gets back to “we are doing the best we can”. It gets back to evolution. Like, how we left our meat-eating ways by killing our food, to learning how to have new food sources. Because we had to survive. Calling a physics “feud” for religion’s sake when there is theoretical evidence to say it could have been a debate. Or evolution not being made clear whether it’s a science, philosophy, or subject in and of itself. You could theorize many reasons for why we started to cook our own food, Kinetic Energy=1/2 x Mass x Velocity^2, and Energy=Mass x Light^2 both fit Newton’s third law of thermodynamics in my opinion (Force=-Force^2) not Force=Mass x Acceleration, and Charles Darwin may have been the greatest philosopher to have walked the earth, but he’ll never be credited as such so long as preachers have a say. I cannot say for sure yet, since I just started, but I am giving vegan keto a go because I think it may help me. I also started smoking organic Natural American Spirit cigarettes again to my bump up within my income from government sanctioned Section 8 vouchers every month. This is more money; I just do not have any reasons the game has to be against the rich if it doesn’t have to be. There are obvious reasons we should tax the rich, they will fall in line with why we should not procreate biological children into debt slavery. Same with biological children that will consume animal products. I have lived the stressful 40-hour work weeks, and it is near impossible to stick to your morals and beliefs. Without work I have found it much easier, at least on medication, and I was brought up with a healthy relationship with food, so it was easier to obtain once all was in place. Against religious principles in mind (Amorality), people seem to prove them more patriotically than ethically. And appeals to patriotism seldom suffice against history like the theory of evolution will. That is my main argument. Why not treat it as such? If our ability to learn is incapacitated I would argue we have very little after that.

It is clear our planet has disbanded any hope of the redemption of our global economy after the demise of oil. Oil is 80% more powerful than any other form of energy, and that means combined, air, water, and sun energy will still barely touch the 20% mark even if we focus all our infrastructure on those three sources. Yes, it is a problem of food, the industrial revolution has carried humanity through. From both an evolutionary and philosophical stance, be it the atoms in our bodies or the quantum gravity around us, we see danger, and no number of soft definitions can substantially probe that wrong. Why the glimmer of hope? I would say the glimmer of hope lies in the principles, beliefs, and science we carry on into the post industrious age.

I would like to make the assertion that as a human collective consciousness we are falling fast from what I will call at this time an enlightened scope of reality. I surmise debt slavery could be as bad as it has ever been. And yes, people moving into the bigger western civilization cities is stopping reproduction at the quickest rate in human history, due to the fact science has enabled us to be thorough in our own interconnected breeding rates. One might say, who is an anti-natalist, all is lost on the enlightened frontier. With absolute vigilance, and even a lean towards vindictiveness, it is still, and will always be, the human capacity to trivialize sentience and make its own. As the owner of sentience, we are not stewards of the planet. We are responsible caretakers. Do I believe we are doing the best we can? Typically, yes, this is what I agree with. As there are so many rudimentary problems with welfarism. We can deduce it might be a problem developing the socio-economic systems in Africa and South America because then they will have nuclear weapons, and we are unsure of that outcome. This is a very valid argument. The worst-case scenario would be nuclear war and the best case would be that these countries give up their traditional Catholic God beliefs. This isn’t too difficult to do. Many people become secular in their thinking, at least through adulthood, however, when they become old and needy, they pick religion right back up like they never left it. This is what happened to my grandfather. He always carried kind of an Einstein approach to God right into his dementia which I will say has claimed his life. Is it possible a disbelief in God can give us a better functioning brain? Probably something we will never truly know unless all the humans left on earth were atheist, since demons have played such a prevalent role in our past as societies and empires. I guess the questions should be asked. Are we just playing subjective quantitative roles in society in reducing the population? Are we deterministically intrinsically just playing out our roles? Or are we playing arbitrary selfish roles that are consequentially helping someone else do better in their life? I am by no means a pro-moralist or death philosopher; however, death plays a huge part in my philosophy, obviously from the animals in nature standpoint, the attrition rates are far too high for me to be comfortable with, and I don’t see that changing. For some reason it is hard for people to latch on to this equation, and if they claim to be anti-natalist, they are outing themselves to the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement subjective conclusion. So, is there any difference. I would say worldly and globally there must always be a fundamental difference between differentiating belief systems. That’s too obvious. Yet, the conformity to ones of another, or vice versa can be a problem to the main problem of sentience. In terms of human reproduction, we can find the illusion in ourselves that our lineage, bloodline or what have you can play an extravagant role in solving human problems if not mere reproduction for satisfactory means. This is a giant problem among enthusiasts thinking they are solving the problems of global warming. I fell into this category a little bit in the past. It is an impossible standard. On the other hand, you have conventional physics, however creative, still used as a weapon of false ingenuity. I will not use a false sense of “eternalism” that quantum mechanics is claiming to coincide with that puts all of us into subjective isolated experiments, unless of course we are playing roles in each other’s realities, then this substantiates their claim.

Conventional Physics for the Rational Person (Light x Velocity Potential of Hydrogen x Radius x Momentum)…

Physics is a language unlike any other that many do not acquaint themselves with due to the extraordinary depth of the equations we find literally representing the universe. Many, if we are lucky, get to find out what the Big Bang and “Newton’s” atom is and never return to it so long as we live. Is it not for any reason? That we so regret the physics that is cast before our eyes if math does not compute? That spirituality should supersede science. The answer for any logical person is absolutely no, the most valuable science, particle physics, should definitely have a higher range of observants, opinions, and interaction, so as to not be interpreted as sheer math problems, but defining and most of all, expanding the conscious awareness of the Physical Universe to any well noted educated mind, enveloping the dream of founder of the American Atheist Society, Madalyn Murray O'Hair for conscious peaceful community. If we were not as subservient as we are right now to sports and were more psychologically judicial in all our ways to put more money into development of more structure that could teach real, foundational unified physics than economies and businesses, sentience would be exceptionally better off. Instead of prison training camps where only elite minds get scraped up into the backlash of “manipulated advertising physics”, anyone could learn and expound theories, and much more research and intentional comradery would take place to investigate even deeper into the biological physicality and elemental physics thoughtforms and mind graphs that are everywhere in Evolution. The “talking the physical universe to death argument” obviously is not the end all be all of life seeking purpose, and sentience should still be greatly outlasted as the arbiter of the mainstream. But I believe botany can help humans do what must be done in nature to bypass emotional standpoints caring for family and property rights, in other words, the current mainstream. Just expressing the importance of Newtonian Particle physics or even more so particle “theory in” physics. Why do we need more minorities engaged in particle physics? While IQ is not so innate as it is passed down, even in the west someone with “their average” IQ may still go to war. The problem is more circumstantial than passed down. So, building infrastructure or at the very least encouraging it, in Africa and South America, and a way of teaching eliminating privilege and endorsing philosophy and debate to oppose the nature of gladiator games as we head into fierce global decision in terms of the oil crisis and how we will lockdown populations once the earth can no longer transport import/export as it may please to. This is not being debated/talked about as it should be and needs to. It will be or there will be nothing left to talk about but Anarcho-Mayhem. Wrong? People in minority driven regions like Africa or South America have many capable people to derive non-violent philosophies and most westerners have yet to enable a theory of life divorced of violence. Anti-natalism really is one of the only ways. Nuclear biological physics really is the best way to perceive the evolutionary world at your fingertips so what is the hold up? Google is an obvious factor. Also, people like Musk do not speak up fairly about social issues. We need more insight, introspection, debate, discussion, less sports, sex, music, and hypocrisy. No matter what the cost, even human life, a problem of sentience should be perceived as a problem for all. Be as it may true that so long as Catholicism exists this might not be possible. If atheism does not take the throne, how can we win? The only way to find out the way I see it is to give it your all and try no matter working or disabled. Crutches or full body cast the winter fades and the sun blazes while the weak freeze and the abominations burn. Whatever is acceptable today should always be improved upon tomorrow. Obviously not all religion is bad like Rastafarian for one or some new age religions. But many have overstayed their welcome and need to leave. Humans should take a closer look at physics and learn to understand and interpret at will what the universe is doing. Before it’s too late and to become more aware consciously, scientific in thinking and in life, to make do with resources the best, they can.

  3. Is free energy corrupt physics?

Physics can be geometrically illustrated or precisely calculated. There should not have to be a difference if they logically exist at different rates. As if the population has dwindled down to 10 already or we are ready to take the morphine hit, and nothing else matters but death. Talk to me after you have a near death experience. Western diseases can be looked at as diseases of luxury or even statistics. Third world countries still celebrating religious passing of souls. Incredulous. Physics is a science, not a story like religion. The social commentary is overdone. Whether the particles are protons and electrons, or the wave particle duality is present before the morphine hit on the death bed will not make a difference. We are animals at best. We are theorizing. Again, if the physical disassociation exists geometrically or calculated is the same linear direction. The special relativity can be the news of the collective universe at present. General relativity cannot be proven by quantum mechanics because there is no God’s eye view to look through to view the physical universe. What is happening in the world is special relativity and what is happening in universe in relation to our position in it is general relativity. I would say measuring the speed of light is obviously not too sensical unless considering empty matter and what it theoretically could mean. You are observing the problem and giving it an abstract meaning, you are not changing it indefinitely, so to speak. You are only human. It is 1+1=2, not 2+2=5 to juxtapose 1984. Anthropics needing to disappear is an ignorance of psychology. We all are fighting to survive, through the blood of our ancestors at the very least. Another reason it cannot be God of the Gaps because even if it is Kinetic Energy instead of force the Kinetic Energy calculates the position of the particle while the force exchanges equally. Our psychologies work like KE theory, because we must label things we cannot explain. Mentally I do not have a problem with that. I would have gripes with proposing psychology is god of the gaps. Any notion towards the term for that matter when it comes to physics for lack of a better forgoing.

Forward

My current credibility is not much college, but enough to realize it may not really be for me. I started out wanting to be a professor. And, then understanding how, that may not be formidable, I was just to be a teacher, I finally gave up on that as well. That was 10 years ago, and now the madness haunts me day and night. It only gets more progressive, as sometimes I feel stable. My first interest was psychology, until I learned that what I liked about psychology was mostly introspection which mostly led to philosophy.
Preface

I am convincing myself that I am writing this book out of gratitude and strength, but it is more jealously and hate, for what I have not been able to achieve on social media. Fortunately, this is what it has got to be. It is my hope now. In other words, I have the time and money to do something other than what I have failed at for so long on social media, so why not try it? I don’t really care if no one reads, although maybe it would be better that way, it can still be, to me at least, like a work of art I can keep close or give to people, and maybe even sell cheaply. When I say I don’t pride myself on these matters anymore, I really mean it, and I mean they really make me nauseous, especially when you start to swing for the more anti-libertarian, very strict, very liberal, somewhat doctrine, or cult-like propaganda Efilism has shown me it can be. This can become toxic, make people dangerous for themselves or others and people can and do get hurt just from words in my experience. It happens very rarely, but it happens with the mentally sick and that is just what statistics what have you understand as facts. I do not consider anyone the leader, or Efilism to be cult-like, in writing this, although I have, in its social media presence, thought about it in those ways in the past, unfortunately. I, now, am looking at it as the philosophy of Gary Mosher, a little bit different than what I know of David Benatar’s philosophy, which is only from hearsay at the time of writing this since I have not gotten to his book, Better Never to Have Been, yet. At times this book is meant to be serious, at other times it is meant to be more of a mockup. I am by no means a professional writer, but I certainly have a passion for it. It is just, I think I will tend to veer into passive-aggressive bits of information that are dialogically placed to reach pieces of persuasion or amusement, but come off as more nihilistic, which is accurate.
Introduction

Philosophy had its place with me, and I suppose, so did psychology, freshman year, aged 18 at Old Dominion University (Norfolk, Virginia) that my father was well-off enough to pay for. The year was 2010 and had just graduated high school with high hopes still for college and the job market. All this would be shortened by drug experiences that would lead me to finding my inner spirituality, one might call it. I had become the college-drop out in a well-to-do town full of Christianized suburbanites. I had wanted to be a few things in college until mental illness disabled me, kept me tied to psychiatric wards and my father’s money until I was 26 and able to live off government welfare. During that time Alcoholics Anonymous was a social group, which was enduringly beneficial as well. It was around this time, being left on my own, I was able to discover efilism, antinatalism, and more about veganism. Things were not steady for another year or so and then I was able to get it together. I do not wish to implore my psychological story, but if I feel it gives the reader context, I will, thinking it is best for the philosophical discussion. Is my brain working off madness, or pure reason? You may decide for yourself. I just do not want the book to be too existentially analytical, but if it must be, it must. Right now, I am wishing I could turn off my nightly entertainment habits, or the luxuries, at least, of my entertainment, financially, would cease to exist, and be no more, for I have been listening to Socrates dialogues and they must have inspired me none the less. Now I am 30, writing this book. I do not pride myself on calling myself any of the labels anymore, as I’m not a professional, but I have before, and it helped me to get to where I am today. Again, I know it is not helpful to the philosophical dialogue to continually impress upon the reader my background, so I will try to get that out of the way now. I live a very isolated life, talking to very few people, yet still more than some, which I prefer. But the mind is a craniological mode constantly playing tricks and it is good to keep the roaring lions tamed in their cages from time to time, as not all people from the past, Socrates included are perfect to me, and not even Jesus was a god to me as he would have still had the bodily functions of any regular human, the real character who was the man, that is, and not just one the anthropomorphic interpretations of the universal Creator. I think genetically these are the best years of my life with modern science, but I do not think I have good genetics and think I must have had predispositions to some mental illness. I can still study and maintain, but again, my craniological modes are nonsense, either up or down, I am either exhausted or manic, and not ever in between, week in and week out. I just feel this would only affect me with school as I cannot work. Nothing to pass on genetically, let alone become a parent, carrying the burden thereof. I aborted one fetus in my mid-twenties, thankfully, and it is still one of the top three things that has happened in my life. The other two would have to be getting on meds and disability (as well as Section 8) in no order. If I had had the baby and not been on meds I would just be locked up full time, most likely, in a metal hospital, anyway, and one of the main reasons I am glad I did not have the baby is because I would not of been able to take care of it with my condition and figured I would have eventually had to miss my child support payments and would have been locked up that way. Which could have been immeasurably bad. That is just the truth, but of course the baby was spared a terrible upbringing as well by a couple of drug addicts, or if it was lucky, it may have been put up for adoption. I played American football mostly and was very good at it. My high school football team won back-to-back state championship games, never losing a game. During my junior year I was on a casual visit to West Virginia University on our bye-week visiting an old teammate. Unfortunately, we got into a fight and my friend bumped his head and wound up in a coma and never came out of out of it. This would trigger some PTSD and cause some depression eventually leading to manic episodes before I got out of high school. I want the reader to consider, above all else, I am an abject denialist, meaning I am in denial of all things. Though I claim satanism/Pythagoreanism, I am in abject poverty to the state and its institutions, medications mostly, meaning, in the old times I would have been most likely tortured to death or held against my will, or on so much medication I would have forgot who I was, in an insane asylum. I am well off now, all things considered. This fight against nihilism, my worldview, starts genetically passed on through a mental illness or extreme desire for the academics or passed on through a trauma, where one will naturally find themselves in what I call the three percentile of society that does not fit in, finds themselves lost, without the ability to form relationships, physic vampires to some, demons to others, or geniuses, but rather, since I am one of them, and represent this class, I will say they are introspective individuals that can speculate on deeper levels than most. They might be homeless or professors, but chances are, you were not born to be one of them. In relative terms, and in the philosophical sense, all of us are and are not one of them. We are all people just the same, all ticking different clocks. My clock looks different than yours, but it still tells the same time, or the correct time, more precisely. This is all just more clearly to say, that to know yourself it is important to study great minds, and that is my only task here, before I start to open my own pathways accordingly.

Prologue
February 25, 2018. Feng Ji flew back to Shenzhen from Shanghai. It was evening when he arrived in Shenzhen, and Feng Ji took a taxi back to his company from the airport. On the way back to work, he decided it was time to make a decision.
^((\Game Science have two studios, one in Shenzhen and the other in Hangzhou)*)
Feng Ji called the other partners and asked them to come to the company for a meeting to discuss what to do next. At 2 o 'clock in the morning, Feng Ji wrote down three roads for everyone on the whiteboard in the conference room. "The first path is for everyone to concentrate on making a single-player action game; The second path is to make a popular RPG+SLG mobile game; The third way is to divide into two teams, one team to do mobile games, and five or six people(another team)are ready to do a single-player action game."
Everyone took the third option.
Before receiving Feng Ji's phone call, Yang Qi sent a microblog(like a tweet). He knew what Feng Ji was going to say, and he was waiting for the call. He wrote on his microblog: "The New Year begins to do something crazy, and 10 years in the gaming industry seems to be waiting for this day. I went out for a meeting in the midnight, and the trees of the whole community were whispering my name..."
Yang Qi posted such a microblog that day
1
I was sitting in Feng Ji's office on August 16, 2020, listening to him tell me the above story. Then he thought for a moment and told me that the 2 a.m. meeting wasn't really a "turning point."
"It's really not that dramatic." Feng Ji told me, "We have discussed this for a long time. And I was looking through the business plan we wrote when we were financing in 2016, you know? To write this thing for Financing, I looked the plan, found that there is a third of the content to write that we are going to do a single-player video game——I have now forgotten, and then I went to check the chat history... It really is."
Feng Ji is the founder of Game Science studio. In 2014, Mr. Feng and several of his longtime colleagues who had created Asura left Tencent to form Game Science.
^((\Asura: 斗战神.)* *It literally means “god of fighting”, which is very close to “Victorious Fighting Buddha”, the title Wukong was awarded after finishing his journey. It’s a MMORPG they made at Tencent, also based on Journey to the West, but the style was too young and radical, and the beginning was good, but the follow-up update went wrong*)
Several of the early works of Game Science were fashionable at the time. Yang Qi's art style is aamazing and prominent, and Feng Ji knows how to make the game more stylish. Their strategy is to find the most popular genres of games on the market, plus top-notch art, worldview, and stories. "100 heroes" is a card game, and "Red Tides" is an RTS, and Red Tides auto-chess...... It is an auto-chess. When the project was first launched, the auto-chess theme was in full swing, and the number of people online in the game was good, but after that, auto-chess seemed to be suddenly forgotten, and all the auto-chess game data was declining, and so were theirs.
(*100 heroes and Red Tides: their mobile games**)**
The character design of \"100 heroes\" is very cool
In November 2017, two months after the open beta of "Red Tide", the company's partners felt that RPG+SLG seemed to be a project that could make money quickly. So they started making an RPG+SLG type game. The new game follows the worldview of Red Tides and uses the universe as a battlefield. Feng Ji is the chief planner of the game, and Yang Qi, the co-founder of Game Science, is the art director.
By the beginning of 2018, Yang Qi had drawn a lot of concept drawings for this new game, and Feng Ji had already done some preliminary design. But Feng Ji didn't see anything interesting on this game. "I can't stand it anymore - you know what I mean, right?" Feng Ji said to me, "I can't stand it, which means that I don't really want to play this game."
"Although we all think that sooner or later we will begin our single-player video game, sooner or later, we always feel that the time is not ripe, and we always feel that it is not the right time, for example, we don't have enough money, or ...... Anyway, we just want to wait for a moment.“ Feng Ji explained.
But Yang Qi didn't want to wait any longer. "Once at dinner, Yang Qi resolutely proposed that the single-player video game must start now. Feng Ji told me, "He(Yang Qi)said that you can always find a reason not to start——there is not enough money / not enough people / conditions in all kinds are insufficient...... If you wait like this, you may never start. But he felt that if he didn't, the company might not be attractive enough to him...... So, we started to talk about it in earnest.”
That afternoon, I met Yang Qi in Feng Ji's office. Compared to Feng Ji, his state seems calm and detached, and he seems to be accustomed to detaching himself and evaluating himself and the whole thing from the perspective of a third party. He pulled his mask down to his chin and smoked a cigarette with a fruity popping bead. We talked while smoking.
I asked Yang Qi why he was so resolute in this matter, he said very easily: "We also waited for a while, we have made some other games, you know, you must live first."
I asked him the question again.
He thought about it for a moment, then told me seriously, "Because I don't think I can work like this for a few years...... My body couldn't bear it. For example, I used to rotate for several days without weariness, but now I have to sleep after staying up all day. Moreover, people's creative life is limited, and a person's golden time for creation may only be a few years, when you have experience, physical strength, and flexible brains...... This is your most precious time, and if you don't create something good at this time, you may never get another chance in this life......"
After deciding to play a single-player video game, Yang Qi was "obviously in high spirits". At that time, Game Science didn't have their Hangzhou studio, and all the developers were working on the second floor of the Shenzhen office, and after that meeting, they vacated a small corner of the first floor for the project, and Yang Qi moved down the next day. This made Feng Ji feel very good. As the founder of Game Science, he felt a responsibility to the other "people who came out with him". He also wants to see his friends at work in high spirits——even just in high spirits.
2.
Game Science's Hangzhou studio is located in an entrepreneurial industrial park on the outskirts of Hangzhou. The Pioneer Park is newly built, and there are small buildings in the Hui stylescattered in the park, with white walls and black tiles. I walked into the park on a hot summer afternoon, almost all the houses were empty probably because the COVID-19 is not over yet. There are some workers who are maintaining the roads.
Game Science's new office in Hangzhou
"Originally, it was said that there was Starbucks or something, but because of the COVID-19, it has not yet been settled.” Feng Ji said, pointing to a house in front of him which was obviously unopened.
^((\Hui style:)* 徽派风格. *It refers to the ancient architectural style of Anhui and Zhejiang provinces, mainly with wooden frames, white walls and green tiles, elegant and exquisite, with exquisite carvings*)
Game Science has a small four-story building here. It was about 2 P.M. when I went, and their day was just getting started. Lights were off in the room, and almost everyone was lazily slumped in their chairs, looking like they were going to fall asleep at any moment. There are either animations or gameplay videos on the screen, or some unintelligible but cool interface. All of the windows had no curtains, and some had a few pieces of cardboard glued to them with scotch tape to keep them out of direct sunlight.
"I haven't had time to install the curtains yet. Feng Ji led me upstairs. The second floor is a common area, with several treadmills and bicycles in the corner, and some tables and chairs in the middle. The third floor is empty, with a 70-inch monitor on the wall, and a few wooden knives and two shields in the corner. Feng Ji told me that they will do a preliminary inertial motion capture here, which will serve as a reference for the next step of more detailed optical motion capture. The fourth floor is his office, but he says he doesn't often stay upstairs.
The single-player game team moved to Hangzhou in December 2018. Feng Ji likes the atmosphere of Hangzhou, the pace here is not as fast as Shenzhen, and the housing prices are not too high. As a relatively mature development company with sufficient development experience, Game Science avoids most of the risks in the game development process. Their core creative team have worked together for many years and know each other's abilities. They are familiar with the game development process and have experience developing successful games. They have always controlled the size of the project and have always maintained a very small team with a lot of experience and tacit understanding.
In the beginning, there was no objection to what to do. By default, everyone wants to make an action game with weak network, focusing on combat experience, and fighting with cold weapon. Of course, there is a debate about the specific style, but the general direction has not changed. They talk every day, when they eat, and when they are at workstations. The style of the game, the character traits and a lot of details slowly form a consensus. At that time, Feng Ji was obsessed with "Dark Souls", and Yang Qi preferred "Monster Hunter", and the consensus was to make an action game with "a very strong sense of enemy oppression", "exquisite level structure", and "fragmented narrative with a mysterious style".
Prior to this, the engines used by Game Science were Cocos and Unity, and the common characteristics of these two engines were simplicity and low learning cost. When it comes to new projects, the best option is Unreal. So everyone started learning the Unreal engine from scratch. Feng Ji learns how to move the camera, Yang Qi tries to build the scene and adjust the lighting, and another planner, the "village chief"(Jiang Baicun, Lead Game Designer), begins to build a white box, "where to set up blocks, how to paint the air wall".
In May 2018, the pre-research team built the first basic scene to experiment with the most basic sense of fighting, AI and combo feel. Once successful, they decided to start experimenting with an experimental level that would show off the "final effect". They chose Huaguo Mountain. You'll see a scene in yesterday's(August 20, 2020)13-minute video of Black Myth: Wukong, where the protagonist walks by cloud, accompanied by a loong, and the background is a densely vegetated mountain peak, which is Huaguo Mountain.
^((\Huaguo Mountain:)* ***花果山****. It literally means mountain which was full filled with plants and fruits. It is where Sun Wukong was born, at the beginning of the story, Wukong became the king of the mountain, and here that he fought against the heavenly army when the Jade Place decided to wipe out his force.*)
^((\Loong: 龙.)* *The divine animal of China, totally different from dragon. The Loong in 2021 video Game Science released is a typical one*)
Huaguo Mountain scene in the demo
At the end of 2018, the Huaguo Mountain level was basically formed, and they realized the basic game functions. The protagonist was born and walked out of the cave——the Heavenly Soldiers are besieging Huaguo Mountain, the protagonist moves forward in battle, fights with a Heavenly General, and after the battle, the protagonist rises to the clouds and fights against the Heavenly army under the gaze of The Four Heavenly Kings.
^((\The Four Heavenly Kings: 四大天王.)* *The four protector gods in Chinese mythology, each with an unique weapon and appearance, guarding the four heavenly gates in the east, west, north and south*)
"100,000 Heavenly Soldiers come over one by one, and the stick will become a very exaggerated state......" The group presented this level at the 2018 annual meeting. This part of the picture is shown at the end of the 13-minute video, and the state of the Heavenly Soldier now looks unnatural, and Feng Ji told me that they plan to redo this part.
In the demonstration, the golden hoop stick in the Monkey King's hand can be made longer
In 2019, the group grew to around 20 members, with the goal of "achieving a complete level". After discussion, it was decided that the level should at least "be of a quality that the player can experience". The name of this level is Heifeng Mountain. In "Journey to the West", Heifeng Mountain appeared in chapter 16 "Guanyin Temple's monk swindled the treasure, Heifeng Mountain's yaoguai stole the cassock". In the original novel, it is the first serious yaoguai / yaojing that Sun Wukong encountered on the way to get the Buddhist scriptures, and it is also the main content of the demonstration you see in the video.
^((\Heifeng Mountain:)* ***黑风山.****It literally means black winds mountain. That’s where Sun Wukong met the first decent yaiguai(different from those weak one)——the black bear*)
***(\Guanyin: 观音)****. The powerful bodhisattvas of Chinese Buddhism who helped Wukong many times on the way to the west. The bodhisattva has no gender, but in folklore, people have given Guanyin a female figure*)
^((\Yaiguai / yaijing: 妖怪/妖精.)* *Just like monster, kaiju, demon......*)
3.
Although some preparations have been made, the Heifeng Mountain level is still harder to make than they imagined.
"When you actually start it, it's really hard to make a level that has a narrative and allows the player to be emotionally engaged." Feng Ji told me, "There are many things in your heart, do you want the yaoguai to talk to you? What is this yaoguai doing when you are away? Why do you have
to fight with him? I wonder if there should be some foreshadowing in the front?"
All the "wants" are related to technology and industrial processes. Nowadays, originality is no longer the deciding factor for a high-investment commercial game, realization is more important. In reality, " realization" means several simultaneous workflows, each of which must be as efficient and quality as controllable as possible.
If you want to do a short piece of engine-generated CG, the general process is as follows: first the literary planner writes the script, then the artist draws the 2D storyboard, and then builds a simple level model with a texture-free polygon model (because there are no textures, everything is white, which the developers call the level "white box"). Once you get the white box, you can make a dynamic storyboard inside. If you want to show a close-up of a character's face, you need to do it in motion capture, and they'll do it with an inertial motion capture device and then put it into the game to see how it looks. If there's something not right, you have to remove it and start again. If everything's OK, the optical motion capture can be submitted to produce the final product.
During the game's development, there are countless production pipelines going on simultaneously. The larger the game and the more technologically advanced it is, the more uncontrollable it is. And if it gets out of control – whether quality or efficiency——it can end up being a disaster.
They used Heifeng Mountain as a minimal workable model. Until everything was ensured, the development team was afraid to start a large-scale production. Feng Ji calculated the account for me very seriously, "For example, optical motion capture——a studio with 60 cameras, a team of dozens of people to serve you, the cost of a day is 200,000 to 300,000 RMB." If you say: 'I haven’t made up my mind today, so I won't do it yet.'——You still have to pay the money. ”
Feng Ji showed me the playable version of the Heifeng Mountain level on the spot, and I also played it——the version is not very stable, and occasionally jumps out. He was a little nervous and keep reminding me that "the present feel is far from the best effect", "some skills have not been finalized", "the values need to be changed", "it is indeed not the final level, and there are still many details missing".
Actually, I was surprised enough. There is no difference between the demo video and the actual playing. I heard that a streamer was quite excited after watching the demo of this game, and he sighed to his friends: "The 3A of China is coming!"
The Heifeng Mountain boss battle in the demo
But Feng Ji didn't want to mention the word "3A". On the one hand, he felt that this statement might attract some attacks, and on the other hand, he felt that the definition was completely imprecise ——"What do you mean by saying 3A? Of course we know what each A is, but the specific definition ...... Very vague.”
"At least one A is that it costs a lot of money. I said, "Can you tell me about the cost of developing this game?"
"You can think like this: if a player plays for one hour — not that they get stuck or die all the time, it's a relatively smooth gaming experience......," Feng Ji told me, "And the development cost per hour is 15 to 20 million RMB."
4.
If you often go to Zhihu(a chinese app, just like Quora), you will see a series of questions related to "China" and "3A" every now and then, such as "Why doesn't China have 3A masterpieces?", or "When will China have 3A masterpieces?", and "Does China have to have 3A masterpieces?".
These questions are full of good hopes, and some doubts about the fact that iron does not become steel - we already have the largest game company in the world, and we have such a profitable game industry—so why don't we have triple-A yet?
Discussions about \"domestic games\" and \"triple-A\" always attract a lot of attention
Sometimes, I think for a lot of people(including me), the "Triple A" is like a gold medal at the Olympics. There's a whole bunch of stuff behind it. Anyone who has been in the gaming industry for more than a year can easily say "what is between us and triple-A". But sometimes, you can't tell exactly what the problem is without doing it in person.
If you watch the 13-minute promotional video carefully, you will realize that the monkey as the protagonist is silent most of the time—he doesn't speak, there are no close-ups of his face—all the characters have no close-ups of facial expressions. This inevitably makes people feel that the motive for the battle is not clear. Feng Ji said that this is actually a standard "technical problem".
"There's an uncertain rumor that Naughty Dog has a 1:1 ratio of art and technical art. Feng Ji told me. You can think of technical art as "a badass person who understands both technology and art", which is not accurate, but not too wrong. Specifically, the job of Technical Art is to provide technical support to the art team and improve the quality and efficiency of art. To put it another way, if a job requires close collaboration between technology and art, then a technical art is needed.
"One of the reasons why we wanted to find technical art was that we had to work on the story. Feng Ji said, "There are a lot of problems in motion capture, such as cohesion, environmental interaction, and alignment. Do you remember the battle with Ling Xuzi, that is, the wolf, at the end of the video?"
^((\Lingxuzi: 灵虚子.)* Black bear’s friend, also appeared in Heifeng Mountain. He wasn't a mighty yaiguai, in the original novel he was beaten to death by Wukong with just one hit. There's something strange about him, in the novel he is written as 凌虚子, but in the video it's written as*******虚子, the pronunciation of and 灵 is the same*)
"Yes.”
"Actually, the earliest version we designed was that the protagonist turned into a giant ape, and there would be a very exciting execution. The wolf pounced down from the roof, and the great ape held it up, grabbed its teeth with his hands, and pressed it to the ground, and then charge to the wolf. Feng Ji said, "Sounds good, doesn't it? Okay, as soon as the hand touches the teeth, it will be molded." We can't get the protagonist to stand in a stable position, so the teeth will come out of the fingers.”
"Technical art is about solving these kinds of problems. "He can align the models and even determine what the material of each model is. In more advanced cases, the material of the tooth can even insert the flesh into the blood...... But we didn't do it well, we did it for two months, gave up, and changed the ending (that’s why another monkey appeared in the end). We delayed the design for several months this time, and in the end, we couldn't solve it."
So, I didn't see the shot in the end. However, Feng Ji said that they did not want to give up, and sooner or later this execution would be made.
Feng Ji told me a legend that in Naughty Dog, there is a separate button on each art's table. As soon as you press this button, a technical artist will come over and ask what the artist is having. "Is there a problem with the particle emitter, or does the fluid feel wrong? Or is there a problem interacting with the scene? I'll fix it on the spot.”
Game Science knows the importance of technical art, but they don't have enough technical artists. Not only is there no game science, but there are not too many mature technical arts in China, and "they are all in big factories like Tencent and NetEase".
But some of the problems were solved. In the promotional video, the monkey picked up a knife called "Red Tide". Feng Ji told me that it was not a pre-programmed animation. The monkey can walk over anywhere, clench the knife, pull it out of the ground and put it in the ear. The key here is to walk over and draw the knife. It took about two or three months for the development team to smooth out this movement, which most people are not aware of.
Feng Ji stood up and demonstrated to me, "Have you played The Last of Us: Part 2? Have you ever noticed the movements of the characters in it? Like I'm sitting here, and the game prompts you to press a button, and you pick up an object——no matter where you're, whether you're facing something or sideways, the movement is very natural?"
The rope in The Last of Us: Part 2 has a high degree of realism, whether it is bent in the player's hand or stretched and straightened, it is very natural
I struggled to recall this inconspicuous detail in the game. Feng Ji continued. "We first thought it was to capture a few more movements, but then we found that the direction of the characters, especially the direction of the feet, is very subtle, if we only do frontal movements, what if the thing is on the side? Do you want to turn around? But there is no material for a smooth turn, and it is very strange to rely on procedural fusion——there are ways to achieve it without awkwardness, such as brute force cracking, I design 32 actions, just to take this knife, all directions are taken into account as much as possible. But in the game, you don't just have to hold a knife, you have to open a door, and you have to hold a hammer. If all actions are multiplied by 32, neither the production cost nor the amount of resources is acceptable.”
Feng Ji continued, "Then we worked on methods, and watched the public speeches made by big manufacturers at GDC. Then we found out that Ubisoft had come up with a solution, which was "Motion Matching". The most powerful thing about this technology is that we only need to record a batch of basic motion animation data according to a set of rules, and then without any animator trimming, Motion Matching can automatically produce a complete set of smooth and natural character movements for you.”
I asked, "Is this library open source?"
"There are some opensource versions online, but they are very immature. We've made it production...... We pushed back the details of Ubisoft's various plans, and in some places Ubisoft didn't disclose the specific implementation method, we also managed to make it, such as what specifications to design the whole set of movements, how to realize some strange walking animations......" Feng Ji said, "But if you compare yourself with Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, or even bolder, with God of War or The Last of Us, you will find that you are just not as good as it." Their library of basic actions and corresponding math algorithms are a black box for you. But it's also their moat.”
I asked him, "If you make all of this, it will be your moat?"
"Of course——But they have a lot of iterations of generations, and there is no way to do this quickly."
5.
They still have to keep making choices. For example, the style of play, is it going to be a Monster Hunter style game, or a God of War style game, or a Soul game? They found that each style corresponds to a different emphasis and detail. If you study God of War, the focus of development will be on the performance and execution, and if you study Monster Hunter, you will first have to solve the problem of large-scale enemy movements. If you're going to make a Soul game, you're dealing with character growth and duel-style combat——there are challenges in every direction, and the most important thing the development team wants to know is what the overall feel of the game will be for the player. They want to be sure about "how would the player describe our game?"
This bothered them for a while, and then Feng Ji figured it out, "If we go to benchmark a very specific product...... You will naturally turn into a second-rate game. Even if you can pay tribute well, it will naturally make players feel like a second-rate game.”
They began to consciously distance themselves from the best of the best. "I'll admit that they have probably the best solution for the current action game. Feng Ji said to me, "But we have to keep our distance from these games." They don't want players to directly associated Blackmyth Wukong with a certain design of a specific game. As a result, they abandoned their weapon parry and used the "Copperhead Iron Arm / Unbreakable body", they prowl by turning into a cicada.
^((\Copperhead Iron Arm:)* 铜头铁臂. *Now there is no accurate translation of this spell, in short, it means that the body is as hard as metal, almost unharmed. In the novel, the Monkey King's body has always been indestructible, but it needs to be used as an active skill here in game.*)
^((\Cicada: 蝉.)* *Wukong always turned himself into a cicada/a fly/a bat......to sneak into yaigauis’ caves*)
In the demo, the Monkey King, who transforms into a golden cicada, will not be discovered by ordinary miscellaneous soldiers
Level design is another issue, Feng Ji used to be very obsessed with the box-style design of "souls" games, the so-called box-style design, almost specifically refers to the sandbox-like levels achieved by Japanese games with highly accurate design. But by the end of 2019, as development progressed, the development team realized that Blackmyth Wukong wasn't a good fit for box-style level design. After discussion, the development team finally decided that if they wanted to express the grand epic sense of "Journey to the West", it was more appropriate to use multiple levels + teleportation to represent their big mythological world, so that each map could have more design ideas.
But Feng Ji also retains the right to "make a certain sense of box court on a single map". "Of course, I will respect the requirements of art for realism. Many scenes in "Dark Souls" are churches, and you can design a lot of loops, up and down, but you can't force a lot of steps or elevators in the forest, ......right? So we will do it specifically, Heifeng Mountain is a little flat, and Leiyin Temple can be deeper...... But I still want to keep a certain amount of openness, so that players can still explore the map.”
^((\Leiyin Temple: 雷音寺.)* ^(\It literally means a temple with sound of thunder. It’s the destination of journey to the west in novel. And there are two Leiyin Temple, one is real, and another is created by the Yellow Eyebrow King(****黄眉大王**** to deceive Sun Wukong and his partners. The author called it "Little Leiyin" in his novel, Game Science translated it as "New west" in the TGA trailer. The Yellow Eyebrow King is a person who ran away from the Lei Yin Temple, his story is in chapter 65)*)*)
Feng Ji was keen to tell me about the worldview and overall style of the game, but I decided not to reveal too much here. I can't make much of a judgment until I see the final presentation. This game is not a replica of "Journey to the West", and they don't want to continue the sharp style of "Asura" that subverts everything and challenges everything.
They sometimes don't want to talk about Asura, and they seem to be a little worried about what players will say when they think of that game. But they still wanted to tie this game to their first game, Asura. For example, in the 13-minute video, the subtitle at the end is "After Baigu, go back to the west".
(\Baigu: 白骨****. It literally means white bone, and Baigu yaiguai appears in chapter 27 of the novel. They adapted this part totally when creating Asura*.
"Do you know why we say this?" Feng Ji said to me, " Asura players have a meme, called 'After Baigu, there is no Journey to the West'. We planned 5 chapters at that time, and the third chapter is called 'Goodbye Madame', and Madame refers to Mrs. Baigu——we did 3 chapter of the plot in total, and there was a plot animation and dubbing, which was very good, but it came to an abrupt end in the third chapter. The task descriptions later were all textual later. That's why players say that.”
The CG of \"Goodbye Madame\" in \"Asura\" left a deep impression on players.
On August 20, when the video was released, Yang Qi post a microblog on Weibo: "(This theme) is a burden for us for more than ten years. Many colleagues don't say it, but everyone knows that this knot is unavoidable. It's an honor to show you the progress of the development today, and we will do our best in the future, hope we will never disappoint you again.”
I asked Feng Ji on WeChat: "Can you help me ask Yang Qi, why use the word 'again'?"
Feng Ji replied to me: "He probably thinks that "Asure" has regrets. Then he added, "I have that too, but I don't have any resentment."”
I asked, "Resentment? To whom?"
Feng Ji said: "To me, I was not so brave at that time.”
6.
I showed some of the articles I had written to a friend. I said to my friend, "I don't want people to feel like the whole development is very tough——like reportage in the '80s.”
"It's okay. My friend said, "I still feel a little bitter, not very serious."
"Then I'll change it. I said, "I'm afraid that some people will think they are bitter, but in fact they are really not bitter, and they are so happy."
When chatting with Feng Ji and Yang Qi, I asked them, what are you most worried about after the video is released?
Feng Ji said that his biggest concern is that the video does not get the response they expected and goes unnoticed. Yang Qi is worried that after the video is released, many manufacturers will poach people. But as a bystander, what worries me most is the suspicion and attack of public opinion on them——suspecting that this is CG, animation, and deception, accusing them of playing with feelings, swindling, and sadfishing.
As of the morning of August 21, Yang Qi's trailer has been reposted nearly 100,000 times on Weibo, almost all of which are praises and praises
It's not to blame the players. Every suspicion corresponds to at least a few cases that have occurred. Players deceived by fake propaganda——getting angry, and then cynical, believing that giving trust and enthusiasm is a dangerous thing to do. At the same time, "feelings" have become a derogatory term because they have been abused. There seems to be some kind of paradigm, when we say that some people decide to pursue their ideals, we have to express the choices and sacrifices they make, including some noble and sad keywords, some typical moments, like a lonely back walking towards the sunset.
But Feng Ji and Yang Qi did not show bitterness, unwillingness, entanglement and sacrifice. Feng Ji's eyebrows fluttered when he talked about this game. He would start with a certain point, keep spreading, keep associating like Wikipedia, and talk farther and farther. And that's why I need to ask myself again, "does this article describe the joy they showed?" You know, when people are doing what they love, everything they see is so nice.
At the end of that conversation, I don't know why, maybe because of a certain sentence, or some kind of opportunity, our conversation went in a strange direction.
"Yang Qi used to tell me that if we walk on our knees now, we can walk to a mountain of gold and silver——that is, we can make a lot of money. If you can succeed by walking on your knees, I will kneel with you right away. You don't have to convince me, I really want to make money. Now the question is, what path can you tell me that can definitely make money in this kneeling way?
"I really can't answer him. Feng Ji said to me, "Many people point to a product today and ask me, is it possible to succeed by just learning it and strengthening our strengths? But you also know that many people have better execution and resources than you, so how can you compare with them? So in the end, you still rely on your own intuition——you have to impress yourself first, only when your own intuition is strong, you are more likely to impress users." If you're not sensitive to something——let's put aside anything like Ego——you're not sensitive, and your iteration speed will lose to those who have more passion, then how can you succeed?"
But even then, they may still not succeed in the end. Game development is a long-term ongoing project, especially for a game of this magnitude. There are still a lot of problems with the current promotional video, such as the fact that they have been developing it silently for two years, and the number of developers has changed from 7 to 30 now. In the future, they will spend at least two years to develop, there is still a lot of work to be done, a lot of people to join the team, and a lot more to happen.
After the video was released, Feng Ji began to feel a little anxious. He told me on WeChat that he was a little worried about being held too high. "It's just that I don't really feel safe yet...... I'm just this kind of person——hard to be happy until things really happens."
I told him he would get used to it—it wasn't just a pure blessing. Actually, it seems to me that maybe he doesn't realize it now, but it's already happened. All these praise and exclamation is exactly part of the matter and is the reward that the team deserves.
I'm still willing to believe that. When you decide to do something you really like, good things happens.
7.
A few days before the video was released, Game Science continued to release the teaser poster on its official Weibo. One per day, each poster is accompanied by a few sentences or a short poem. On August 19, the day before the trailer was released, they capitated the poster with the words:" I was so much older then,I'm younger than that, now."
The \"poster\" is actually a video, accompanied by the sound of a bonfire burning and beeping, and the person in front of the camera is shaking a fan and staring at the campfire, you can find more images on their website: https://www.heishenhua.com/
This quote comes from the song "My Back Pages" by American folk superstar Bob Dylan. In this song, Bob Dylan cricitized and ridiculed his past without hesitation (Incredibly, he was only 23 years old at that time). The song has a total of 6 bars, and each bar is preceded by an introspection on his past, followed by this sentence. The last two bars go like this——
In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I'd become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
My existence led by confusion boats
Mutiny from stern to bow
Ahh, but I was so much older then
I'm younger than that now
Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats
Too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking
I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms
Quite clear, no doubt somehow
Ahh, but I was so much older then
I'm younger than that now
Epilogue.

The TV on the wall of the cafe Gentry was sitting at blared the evening news. She had gotten sick of hiding in her hole and wanted a breath of fresh air, but now was regretting ever showing her nose. The sub par sandwich and the bitter coffee didn’t help, either.
But the place wasn’t the one she frequented, so she was less likely to get spotted this way.
The federal channel gave way to the local program and Gentry tuned into the words, eyes on the window overlooking the street.
“Today in "Patriot's Pulse" we are asking people’s opinions in the streets about the most pressing issues that stir our glorious nation,” the TV bellowed. Gentry wondered if other cities of the country had to go through this government-sanctioned clownery or it was their unique position close to the border that warranted this endless stream of brainwashing.
“What issue do you think should get more attention?” the interviewer went.
An elderly woman’s voice overlapping the traffic noise answered: “I’m retired and I need medicine for my hip. My pension hardly covers the bills and the treatment. I love our country but I don’t understand we don’t have enough money for…”
“For healthcare, exactly,” the presenter interrupted and took the microphone over. “With the constant threat of the enemies it’s paramount that we ensure the safety of the nation first. Sadly, this woman and many other retirees have to suffer because of the necessary cuts to the social needs. The growing generation has a responsibility to protect our borders and help the country.”
Gentry scoffed and bit into the stale bread.
“And you, young man? Are you in school?”
“Yeah!” came a youthful male voice.
“Ah, very good. Have you already enlisted?” the interviewer asked.
“Of course! I’m graduating this year and can’t wait to get a gun and go kick some ass!”
“Haha, that’s the spirit! It’s people like you that our motherland relies on most!”
No shit.
The presenter got back on track, “What do you think do we need to talk about more?”
“People like my brother. He left my mom and I and ran away across the border because he was afraid to serve, a wuss!”
“Oh, so he betrayed the country and fled?”
“He did! I’ve always said he was a— ” the muffled noises from the speakers made Gentry turn her eyes to the TV. A woman with a frightened face was dragging the young boy away from the camera, frantically gesturing towards the cameras.
“He’s joking! Joking!” she waved. “It was a neighbour! He was a traitor and a coward. We don’t know him!”
“Exactly!” the presenter’s face came into focus again. “This is so worrying. So many of the youth have succumbed to the putrid influence of our enemies that they are leaving the loving embrace of the country that gave them a roof over their head, education, and jobs! We encourage everyone report those who disseminates dangerous destabilizing ideas especially if they are talking about running away. Please use the phone numbers you see on the screen.”
Destabilizing ideas, huh.
The government was patting itself on the back for providing the bare minimum to people who were of any use and abandoning those who weren’t anymore, be it because of age or otherwise.
Holding their own citizens hostage. The system was blowing its own trumpet for not starving its citizens and letting them to earn a living.
As if it wasn’t what any government was supposed to do!
The evening streets were starting to fill with people, the cafe window slowly darkened, reflecting Gentry’s own sour face.
Perhaps, Exxy felt trapped with her, too. She probably wanted a real family, not a living arrangement with a fellow runaway.
Had she been unhappy living with G? They got a cheap flat after getting out of the camp. At first, it was a tiny, dark and empty cage, not too dissimilar to a basement. But then, Exxy’s pampered potted plants that took over every little nook of the small apartment quickly turned it into a real home. Gentry used to groan every time her friend insisted they take the pots outside for rainwater and sun, but secretly loved the look on Exxy’s. The plants thrived and gratefully sprouted tillers which Exxy would dutifully repot without losing a single one.
Then, she took all of them with her when she left.
All but one.
G sighed.
It was all her own fault that they grew apart. If she really wanted to, she’d at least make an effort to stay in touch.
Case in point: Pete. The smartphone lying on the table still showed the string of his messages, sent as soon as he was well enough to type.
“I lived, bitch! The police are already up my ass about what happened. I said I didn’t know who you were, just in case.”
“wtf is everyone hating me”
“just saw your interview.”
“Don’t call me anymore.”
Outing him in front of the whole city: what did G expect? She deserved it all. The loneliness, the shame, the resentment. Now the guy had to deal with the fallout of her loose tongue AND he didn’t get the justice he deserved. Not only hadn’t the investigation moved forward with his, but he also started getting more threats. On his hospital bed! What a nice surprise to wake up to.
It had to be her who was getting the threats, but she was just too cowardly to come forward and show her face. What a spineless excuse for a human being.
Ding!
** NEW MESSAGE **
No way! It was… the last challenge?
A picture.
Somewhat relieved to take her mind off the heavy thoughts, she enlarged the image and peered into the screen. The decrepit airport on the outskirts, what seemed like the abandoned waiting room with rows of decaying seats and a departures display slantingly hanging from the ceiling.
G knew the place but only from the thrill seekers’ vlogs and pictures from the Internet. It wasn’t a particularly creepy place, just an old and deserted airport that used to faithfully serve the city in its younger years, left behind after a newer, bigger one was built. Now attracting all sorts of rebellious teenagers and an occasional tourist, it had been slowly falling apart under the elements.
Besides the picture, the letter was empty, not offering any additional instructions. If that was the final challenge that was supposed to bring her to Ashtapada, then the picture had to hide a clue. To what though? How does one find an answer without having a question? Was there someone already there waiting for her? Was she supposed to hurry?
It was tricky to go to the airport now, though. First of all, the journey itself would take a couple of hours and required either renting a car or asking someone to drive there. Secondly, it was getting dark already, and she’d rather not meet any homeless inhabitants of the place who might not be delighted about an intruder.
There HAD to be some clue in the picture! A piece of cake would surely help boost her brainpower.
In half an hour or so she was already getting frustrated. The paper napkin on Gentry’s table was covered in scribbles that hardly helped.
...daytime...
birdpoop on seats & floor (no shit!) (lots actually)
...empty?
walls covd. in graffiti (can’t read)
lights out (why would they be on?)
The only thing of value was some graffiti that was discernible, covering the table along with some street gang symbols. The departures column said something in characters G didn’t recognise and the time and date were covered with two stickers: a weird sort of cow head with clown makeup and the Moon. The text recognition software on her phone seemed to finally point in the right direction because apparently, the characters were Chinese and spelt “八條盤碁” that lead to a webpage about Ashtapada.
Did there use to be a flight to Ashtapada? Why else would the departures display show its name? There was no way the dilapidated airport was still accommodating flights from anywhere.
Also, why Chinese? It wasn’t uncommon in to see Chinese characters in airports but the rest of the cities’ on the departures board weren’t written like this.
What about those stickers? Were they just random addition from a local teenage gang or another clue?
Well, why not travel to the site first thing in the morning then?
The cup was empty and it was already dark outside. It was time to move, even though her flat was even darker and emptier. The only thing that waited for her at home was Exxy’s monstera plant, the only one surviving the exodus. Gentry paid the bill and left the cafe.
What she didn't notice though was a burly young man a couple of tables over who texted someone and briskly walked out after her, neglecting to pay for his untouched dessert.
The evening streets were full of people dashing home and car horns blaring at every junction. The faceless crowd made her feel safe, providing the background to disappear into, but the noise was so deafening that it hurt Gentry’s ears. She quickened her pace and in no time found some relief diving into the apartment building where she rented the flat now. The one they used to rent with Exxy. She squeezed her phone in the pocket of her leather jacket and felt it vibrate.
It wasn’t from the Ashtapadan race: just another newspetter she didn’t remember subscribing to. Unable to resist opening a notification though, G tapped on the 5 WAYS TO SURVIVE AN ARMED ROBBERY (the last one will SHOCK you!) and quickly glanced through the badly-formatted list, each accompanied by a silly gif. The “article” was utter trash, that much she could tell just by briefly looking through it while waiting for the elevator.
“IF YOU HAVE ANY SUSPICION THAT THE HOUSE THAT’S SUPPOSED TO BE EMPTY ISN’T EMPTY, DON’T WALK IN” it said.
How was she supposed to know if it’s not empty? Of course the robbers would be discreet, not putting up “ROBBERY IN PROGRESS” banners while doing the deed.
“IF YOU MEET THE ROBBER, DON’T WAIT UNTIL THEY TAKE YOU HOSTAGE, RUN”
Yeah, wasn’t human “fight or flight” response already supposed to take care of that?
“MAKE SURE YOU SEE ALL ROBBERS, ONE MIGHT BE HIDING BEHIND YOUR BACK”
Whoa, article. Paranoid much?
“IF YOU’RE SEIZED, DON’T COOPERATE, TRY TO MAKE SOME NOISE AND RUN AWAY, PREFERABLY TO A CROWDED PLACE”
Horrible advice. Everyone knows you’re supposed to keep calm and give them the money or whatever else they are after. How are such “safety lessons” even legal?
“FINALLY, IF YOU AREN’T ARMED, USE EVERYTHING YOU HAVE ON HAND: A BROKEN GLASS, A MOP, OR THROW A CAT AT THEIR FACE”
Great ideas! Maybe also splash some boiling water into their eyes? That worked out well...
The door to her apartment was creaked open.
Had she forgotten to lock it? No, it never happened before. What did that stupid article say? Don’t walk in? It didn’t seem too stupid now!
She had only taken several steps back to the elevator when its doors opened even before she had a chance to press the button. A guy she’d seen at a Pete’s cafe walked out, eyes full of grim determination, hand reaching into his denim jacket. The sound of several thudding steps and low male voices came from her apartment door, none looking like they were there to throw her a surprise birthday party. These guys weren’t here for the money either.
Her few belongings weren’t worth getting stabbed over. The flat could be thrashed too, for all she cared. With a blood-curdling scream, she threw her phone at the startled man’s face and dashed to the stairs.
It felt like a surreal nightmare. But it’s easy to know if you’re dreaming or not. When you’re not dreaming that is. If you scream at the top of your lungs and it comes out like a proper scream — good news! Whatever made you yell is real and is probably breathing down your neck.
G was almost flying down the stairs, voice soon hoarse, then raspy, then lost, the pounding of several pairs of feet behind her. The few doors that creaked open on the way down promptly shut as she was rushing through the stairs. The neighbours who wanted to see who was making all the noise preferred not to get involved.
A familiar stress-induced lucidity came over Gentry again as she contemplated how easy it seemed to cross one flight with just two leaps if there’s enough motivation. She knew that if she were to twist an ankle she would probably not feel the pain, adrenaline pumping through her veins just like that evening at The Clockface. She changed her mind. Make some noise and run away? Use what you have on hand? Don’t walk into the compromised apartment and watch your back? Excellent advice!
***
It wasn’t before the morning sun began its journey across the sky that G finally saw the ramshackle airport. It really was in the middle of nowhere: it had taken her two attempts to hitchhike but ultimately she just walked the whole way over. After losing her pursuers, sitting at a dark bus stop, she had realised an uncomfortable truth: there was nowhere that was safe for her now. No friends left to stay at.
Maybe it was good, after all. No people to get into trouble anymore. The police would just charge her with assault. No phone, no spare clothes, pockets empty, she had stood up and started walking. She still had her legs. She still remembered the clues. She would get to Ashtapada if it took her away from this damned place. Still shaken from what had happened, she tried calming herself with the physical exertion of the walk but it wasn’t what helped her after all. It was the rage and resentment. With a cold clarity, she hated the system that had brought her up. Hated the people, hated the streets, hated the violence, hated the person she had to be there.
They wanted her gone? Fine.
She wasn’t one to be asked twice.
The first thing that G noticed stepping into the abandoned waiting room was the smell. The rot and decay of the seats covered in bird droppings and the dusty choke of the air assaulted her senses and made her eyes water. In a fit of cough, she inhaled even more of that foul tang and had to rush outside through the broken glass of the gates, into the small airport apron. It looked peaceful in the crisp morning light. The asphalt on the ground was covered in deep cracks with low grass and weeds poking through. Some signs of vandalism were visible, too: some soot on the ground, some airport equipment that had been dragged outside and blown up, some obscene graffiti.
Could it be called vandalism though? If the place was deserted and not in use anymore, wasn’t it just being repurposed? Like a stray dog that technically can’t be neglected, this place didn’t need being cared for anymore. Maybe it started living its own life after people left. Like this, it had immeasurably more personality than any inhabited place. Could whole cities come alive like this, after everyone rendered them dead?
“Got a cig?” — came a hoarse male voice from behind. Not threatening, but it made G jump.
She turned around, ready to run again, but the hunched man in some dirty oversized coat, the rest of the clothes not matching each other in the slightest, looked innocent enough, if a bit groggy.
“Sorry, don’t smoke,” — she answered, still a bit apprehensive.
The man grunted but stayed silent otherwise. An uncomfortable pause filled the air, though it seemed like it was only Gentry who was uncomfortable: the man just sat on the ground, closed his, and soaked in the light. He looked pretty old, grime caking his face adding a decade or two, no doubt, and G suspected his body odour was mixed into stench of the waiting room.
“You live here?” — she asked. If he’d been here when the race organisers were setting up the clues, he might be of help, especially since she had no phone and no Internet to look up information.
“Yeah, why? Wanna move in?” he answered, not bothering to open his eyes.
“I was just wondering if...” — she suddenly had an idea that never occurred to her before — “Have there been people like me coming?”
If there were other contestants, as the NPC said during the simulation, they might come here too in search of clues, and they might help each other. Or rather, she’d have to piggyback on their findings since the only thing she could figure out was the Chinese word for Ashtapada.
“Constantly,” the homeless guy answered. “Those jerks barge in, bother me with petards, break glass, sometimes threaten to beat me up. Hate them.”
G could relate.
***
After several of hours of looking, the horrible smell wasn’t as noticeable anymore, or maybe it had been somehow diminished by the rain that came after a promising sunny morning. The man went about his daily business, not bothering her. The filth on the floor seemed less and less disgusting as Gentry’s fatigue grew. In the end, after all her efforts to find a clue proved fruitless, she finally took a seat on the floor in the corner, not trusting the broken seats, and scrutinized the departure table again. The Ashtapada graffiti was there, as were the stickers. After a while, her new buddy sat near G in silent contemplation, reeking of unwashed skin and old cigarettes.
It was tricky to think without a smartphone at her disposal and the ability to look anything up in an instant. So what did she have? Assuming the code was in front of her, it must have been hiding the time of departure to Ashtapada, supposedly from this airport. Why not just wait here and see when someone arrives to pick her up? She could just camp here, the stench be damned, and meet the organisers when they arrive. There was no way she could actually decipher that weird cow face and moon symbols! Not unless there was someone to bounce her ideas off of.
“See those stickers on the display?” she asked the bum who was enjoying a smoke. So he had a stash after all! Just wanted a freebie. “The ones on the right of the Chinese graffiti.”
“Yeah,” he puffed out. “What about them?”
“What do you think they mean?”
“Fuck me if I know. There’s so much crap on the walls here, who cares?”
No, that didn’t work.
Gentry fell silent again, and her neighbour didn’t mind. After a while though, he spoke up.
“What I do hate, though, is that people use language they don’t understand to seem all edgy and what not when they write shit on the walls. Or tattoo it on themselves, you know? I had a buddy once who thought he had “Follow your heart” tattooed on his back. It actually said “sissy”. When I told him, he didn’t believe it, thought I was bullshitting him.”
G, who has heard a similar story a thousand times, just grunted in acknowledgment. Then with a sudden realisation, shifted to look at him, face incredulous.
“You know Chinese?” she said in disbelief.
“Yeah. Used to teach it, believe it or not,” he said with a shrug exhaling the last wisps of smoke.
“I want to believe,” she answered and pointed to the board. “So what does that phrase in Chinese mean?”
“Something like eight stripes game of Go,” he said without skipping a beat. “I’m telling you, it’s just random crap.”
“What about the stickers? What’s Chinese for a cow? Or a clown?”
“Now that I think about it,” he answered, “It’s not a cow. It’s an ox.”
“Why?”
“Because “ox” and “clown” are written with the same character.”
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
That was something. Could it be a clue? What next?
“And the moon? What’s “moon” in Chinese?” — he gave an answer that didn’t stick in her mind whatsoever, — “Do the two symbols make up a new word?”
“Nah.”
Another dead end. After a while, the steady droning of the outpour lulled her into a tranquil stupor. She didn’t dare doze off with a stranger in the same room though. To avoid falling asleep, she forced herself to speak: “You’re pretty smart. What are you doing here? There’s plenty of work in the city for someone who knows languages.”
“Nah,” he said again, sitting back and stretching his legs out. “The city can bait me with fancy shit all it wants, I ain’t going back. It just takes more than it can ever give, you know?”
“Tell me about it. Still. What if there’s a city that doesn’t take? Or rather, it does, but you don’t mind it because you’re happy to give whatever it asks for. Because it doesn’t demand, doesn’t bait, doesn’t hold anything over your head. It just lets you be. And do what you want.”
“What kind of communist propaganda have you been reading? There ain’t no place like this on this godforsaken planet. And if there was, they probably just harvest organs from suckers like you.”
“Maybe, maybe.”
G focused on the departure table again. Something she forgot about was that the board itself had some words: Ashtapada was written under the “destination” heading, so could the stickers code the time and date?
“Say, erm... sorry, what’s your name again?”
“Call me Kei.”
“Right, Kei, if the symbol for the clown-ox was a time, would it make sense?”
“I dunno, like, an ox could mean “the second”, I guess. It’s from that old story about the zodiac. So, perhaps, 2 pm?”
“Right.”
“Beats me what the clown face would mean though.”
“Ok. And the moon where the day should be?”
He regarded the display with a skeptical look.
“In English, Monday actually comes from the word for Moon.”
“Wow, Kei, how many languages do you speak?”
“Sixteen.”
Gentry went silent for a while.
The man lit another cigarette.
“Kei, what day is it?” Gentry said.
“Monday.”
“And the time?”
“Around noon, I think.”
It was all coming together now.

2024.04.06 00:47 HitchHikersGuide_ Hoohoo… how interesting…!

A man takes a drag from a cigarette as he walks the streets of Yokohama, gripping it between two fingers. He exhales as he looks up at the stars, smile on his face. “Yokohama… wow, I’m finally here!”
He drops the cigarette into a hole in a manhole cover, appearing a few feet ahead of it just as the cover is shot up with a loud explosion. “Hoohoo, fun! Oh, what to do next…! Perhaps I’ll go find Dar…”

2024.04.05 18:18 Nazer_the_Lazer [OT] Five years ago I responded to a prompt about a hyper capitalist future where Bio-DRM chips determine what you are (or are not) allowed to see. Today, it’s a complete dystopian novel!

TL;DR: eBook or Hardcover or Paperback
Not Too Long; Did Read:
Hello!
I’ve been on WritingPrompts for a while, you may have seen me around when I pop in to reply to a few prompts. Or maybe you remember the specific moment from a few years ago when I replied to this prompt.
[WP] In a close future all people in your country are obliged to have Bio-DRM chips implanted. These chips were supposed to prevent you from seeing content you didn't pay for, but big corporations took it way beyond this scope.
That idea exploded into a world of gray meshes, ads, and the search to escape it. I loved the idea of Richard not being a revolutionary, but a bitter man in a society rather apathetic to the system.
So, I ran with it.
I'm very grateful to have the opportunity to present the completed A Sight To Be Sold, a dystopian novel that adheres pretty closely to the original prompt but goes in hard on the idea. Here is the summary:
Richard Wright hates the world he’s forced to live in, as he’s constantly battered by a slew of advertisements no matter where he looks. This is by design, as Richard is beholden to the same implant that the rest of the world is required to have installed in their eyes at birth: a Visual Rights Management implant. Nobody can see a thing without paying “sight-rights” to access it. While most of the world has become complacent to the system that was established decades ago, Richard is bitter with the hand he’s been dealt—he would do anything to get out of the system, even at the cost of his fellow man.
Do you want to experience the ideas of a world similar to 1984, Fahrenheit 451, or The Running Man?
Do you want to see someone embittered toward the shackles of the world, with the dreams of escaping it?
Then you're looking for:
A Sight To Be Sold.
The dystopian story takes place in a future where censorship is the default, and you have to pay your way to regular visual sight. It's a tale of an embittered man whose one goal is to escape the limits of his vision, and the heart changing journey he has on the way

Chapter 01
Richard Wright enjoyed walking through the higher class districts of the city of Goge—but mostly because it upset the residents. His mere presence boiled their blood, as he constantly noticed their sidelong stares and eyerolls. But Richard liked being in their spaces–it served as an ugly reminder that people like him lived in the same society they coveted. To Richard, their disdain for him was invigorating.
On this particular day through the districts, Richard’s stomach growled, reminding him of his original intentions in this part of town.
He did his best to ignore the signs of eateries surrounding him, each of them covered in fuzzy gray blurs hovering ethereally in front of the signage. In strong, bold font flew the text associated with the Graywall: “See it now!” or “Get a glimpse!” often followed by additional, tantalizing subtext to purchase the sight-rights to the sign. It was a clear, yet almost subtle reminder of the gap between Richard and those living in the neighborhood. If you couldn’t afford to see the signs, you couldn’t afford what was available inside. If you deliberately refused to purchase the rights, you weren’t welcome at all. Richard picked up his pace and lowered his head as the tempting aromas wafted his way.
While patrolling down the street, an officer eyed Richard with curious interest. Richard avoided his gaze, hoping to get through his trip without an interrogation. Luckily, by turning the street toward a corner store, Richard checked to see the officer had not followed him. He breathed a sigh of relief.
As Richard continued toward the corner store, he noticed a car pass him with gray mesh hovering over its exterior, inviting him to either buy the rights to view it, or advertising the brand of the vehicle — it changed based on the angle at which Richard was standing. He wasn’t sure that the car advertised on the Graywall was the same as the car beneath the mesh, as these companies would occasionally outbid one another to advertise their products atop competitors’ wares.
Richard made his way within the corner store, accosted by gray items on shelves all the way to the back of the building. When Richard walked in, the lone cashier greeted him, but Richard paid no attention. Instead, he looked up and down the shelf of gray cylinders containing dried noodle soups. He refused to purchase any Soup Premiums and would be left to guess which flavor he was selecting. He picked one up, weighed it in hand as if it helped him determine the flavor within, and shrugged, grabbing another and making his way to the cash register. He picked up a gray orb from the display of fruits, hoping he’d selected a ripe apple.
The cashier smiled at him warmly as he set his meager meal down. She looked at his meager pickings, her smile waning a smidge.
“Can I interest you in anything behind the counter?” she asked, scanning his selections.
Richard hardly looked at the monochrome display behind her, either littered with “Get a glimpse!” messaging or simply ads for cigarettes. He scoffed, thinking how uninviting it would be to want to bring more gray into this world.
“No,” he grunted plainly.
“All right, please stand still to process payment,” she said, raising a scanner to his eyes. The smooth, black device with a glass pane on one end emitted an invisible scanner both identifying Richard and extracting money from his account. He widened one eye slightly, followed by a beep from the device, which indicated a successful payment. As soon as his purchase had gone through, the gray meshes previously covering the items blinked away. A bruised, soft apple, and two packages of dry, vegetarian noodle soup. Richard frowned at the sight. He had intended on grabbing shrimp noodles.
“Can I interest you in…” she faltered when she saw he had already collected his items and was halfway out the door. He had no patience for whatever sight-deal they were running that day. Richard’s mind was too occupied on how long he would get his meal to last.
Leaving the establishment, Richard made his way back toward his neighborhood and peeled the sticker off his apple with a modicum of disgust. It was labeled ‘Tampering with this sticker before purchasing this apple is a federal crime, punishable by fine or Wipe.’ He crumpled it, knowing it was the item that triggered the Graywall to be placed on the fruit. Richard took a bite from his apple. The crispness long faded to a disappointing mush. He swallowed glumly as his face grew sour. What better way to power through his mood than to share it with the district that hated him?
“Hey!” a voice called from behind him.
Richard scoffed, and closed his eyelids to roll his eyes. He reopened them and turned to nod at the officer of The Watch calling to him. The officer gestured for Richard to approach, but Richard only nodded once more, remaining obstinately in place. The officer shrugged and jogged to Richard, looking him up and down. Richard followed suit, looking over the officer.
From shirts to shoes, they were a brilliant, clean hue of blue, a paragon of representation of The Watch. This officer’s blue hat covered most of his blond hair, with wisps peaking out. The members of The Watch were required to wear blue clothing on duty, never shrouded by the grays of Graywall to let others know whom they were addressing. No reason to conceal the people enforcing the law on others.
“What are you doing around here?” the officer asked, presenting a smile that went all the way up to his blue eyes. He was young, Richard thought, as he looked at his clean face, with only the slightest hint of stubble at the base of his chin. The officer’s youth also reeked of inexperience, indicated by the fact that he was offering Richard a smile, rather than the normally allotted tuts or glares.
“I’m looking forward to my gourmet,” Richard replied, holding up his soup and bruised apple for effect.
The officer’s smile widened, amused. He almost looked like he enjoyed the joke. Perhaps he was easygoing.
“Your name?” he asked as if making conversation.
Richard blinked with surprise. The officer could have scanned his eyes to discover his name, but for some reason opted for questioning. Richard found it refreshing and decided not to be glib.
“Wright,” he replied. “Richard Wright. What about you?”
“I’m Officer Kat,” he said, while pointing to the badge from which his name floated. It was difficult to impersonate an officer when the outfit they wore always revealed your name. His badge also indicated he was a recently promoted captain. He looked Richard up and down once more.
“Where’d you get those?” he asked with a flick of his head.
“I just bought them,” Richard took another dissatisfying bite from the spongy apple.
“No, not the food. Your clothes, where’d you find those?”
He sounded as though he was interested. But Wright was familiar with this deceptive line of questioning.
“Made them myself,” Richard said, unable to mask his pride.
“Yeah?” he asked, eyebrow raised. “You sure you made them?” His affability melted away in five syllables.
“Sure I’m sure,” Richard replied. His sincerity was gone.
“You haven’t heard of anyone selling these kinds of clothes?” he prodded.
“These kinds of clothes?” Richard asked with mock shock. “You mean to say someone is selling clothes without Bio-VRM? Isn’t that…” He lowered his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “Illegal?”
Officer Kat frowned, having lost the last bit of his earlier composure.
“I’m sure you know that failure to report the lack of a Bio-Dependency is equivalent to committing fraud. I have sources telling me that a Visual Rights Management-Free Black Market exists in the direction you're heading.”
“Black Market for cloth,” Richard scoffed. “You know, you would have just called that a ‘market’ a few decades ago,” he said bluntly.
“Yeah, and go a handful more decades before that and we were taking ownership of one another based on the pigment of our skin. Times change for the better. Your selective memory only serves to make you sound ignorant. Bio-VRM comes with huge benefits and you know it.” He sounded offended. “Try not to get caught up looking into the past with rose-colored glasses.”
“I don’t know if that’s possible when I have to pay sight-rights to look through those glasses,” Richard replied without missing a beat.
Kat sighed, trying to regain his good-natured tone from earlier.
“There’s a reward for turning in whoever is dealing with the materials in that neighborhood, in case you’d like to share some information,” Kat informed.
“I made this, Kat,” Richard insisted, ignoring the Bio-VRM propaganda. “I don’t need VRM on things I made for myself. I’m sorry you’re so used to seeing gray fabric on people instead of actual clothing, but it’s the truth.”
“I don’t see gray fabric. I pay my premiums, Wright,” he replied smugly.
Richard’s lip twitched and he scoffed. The Watch was known to raid neighborhoods, and would tear houses and families apart in the name of stopping illicit activities. They could ruin a man’s life with the guns at their hips and do it with little to no consequence. And even with all that power over Richard, Kat still felt the need to mock him for his inability to pay to bypass the Graywall. Richard angrily turned around before saying anything he would truly regret. He wasn’t planning on being the reason for any raids anytime soon. Trying to look nonchalant, he continued his way back home.
“Be sure to let any member of The Watch know about Black Market activity! It’s a substantial reward!” Officer Kat called after him.
Richard didn’t give him the satisfaction of a response, but he couldn’t help but sulk before turning a corner down another road.
As always, I want to thank this community for the opportunity and ideas its given me. Without you all, this book never would have come to be. Your support—whether by purchasing, reading, or commenting—sincerely gives me so much morale to continue and has me very optimistic and excited for the future both here and in the larger publishing community.

2024.03.26 02:26 RTSBasebuilder Breaking Point: The Third French Republic/National France

Levi wiped the sweat from his brow as he navigated the battered truck down the dusty dirt road. The Algerian sun beat down mercilessly, baking the cracked earth and turning the air into a shimmering haze. He'd been driving for hours, ferrying soldiers to the construction site of the trans-Saharan railway, where thousands of forced laborers toiled under the watchful eyes of the military. Tuaregs, dissidents, and poor souls rounded up from the colonies - all breaking their backs under the pitiless sun for the glory of the Republic.
Levi tried not to think too hard about the thin, haunted faces of the laborers, or the way the soldiers fingered their rifle triggers as they watched them work. He was just doing his job, same as everyone else. Keeping his head down, trying to survive in this strange new world.
It was grim, thankless work, but it paid better than anything else a Jew could hope to find in National France these days. He remembered the day that his truck and business was brought under the military heel years ago,
He was just sitting down to a breakfast of black coffee and stale bread when a sharp knock sounded at the door. He opened the door to find two soldiers standing in the hallway, their faces grim. Levi remembered his stomach turning to lead.
"Levi Benhaim?" one of the soldiers asked, consulting a clipboard.
"Yes," Levi said, his mouth dry. "What's this about?"
"Under Military ordinance, approved by the Marshal two days ago, Your truck has been requisitioned," the soldier said brusquely. "Report to the motor pool at 0800 for reassignment."
Levi remembered struggling to process the words. "But... I need my truck for my livelihood. How am I supposed to earn a living without it?"
The soldier shrugged, unmoved. "Take it up with the quartermaster. We're just following orders. 0800, Benhaim. Don't be late."
They turned and marched away, leaving Isaac staring after them in shock. He closed the door slowly, his mind reeling.
This was it, then. The moment he'd been dreading since the ships came in from the mainland, packed with soldiers and refugees. The military had finally decided they needed his truck more than he did. Ever since the Commune had taken Paris and the government had fled to Algiers, life had become increasingly difficult for people like him. The military junta that ruled in Marshal Pétain's name was suspicious of anyone who didn't fit their narrow vision of French identity - white, Catholic, and fiercely nationalist.
Levi glanced at his watch and cursed under his breath. He was running late. If he didn't make it back to the city before curfew, he'd be in trouble. The military police were always looking for an excuse to rough up someone.
He reached for the radio, hoping for some music to take his mind off his troubles. But instead of the soothing strains of jazz, the airwaves crackled with the bombastic tones of official propaganda.
"...the decadent Syndicalist regime that has usurped our beloved homeland," the announcer droned. "But fear not, loyal citizens of France! Our brave soldiers, under the leadership of Marshal Pétain, will soon reclaim what is rightfully ours and restore the glory of the French nation!"
Levi snorted and switched the radio off. He'd heard it all before. The promise of a glorious reconquest, the demonization of the Commune, vigilance against "the subversives" among them. It was the same tired rhetoric they'd been spouting for years, even as the people grew more restless and the cracks in the façade of unity began to show.
He was jerked out of his thoughts by the sight of a checkpoint looming ahead. He slowed the truck, his heart hammering. The soldiers waved him to a stop, their faces grim beneath their kepis.
"Papers," one captain barked, holding out a hand.
Levi fumbled for his identity papers, military timetable and travel permit. The soldier studied the documents, his eyes narrowed at the address stenciled on the truck, then finally waved him through with a grunt.
Isaac let out the breath he'd been holding as he accelerated away. One obstacle down. Now he just had to make it through the city streets and hope he didn't run afoul of any thugs spoiling for a fight.
-----------
As he neared the Casbah , Levi's heart sank. Up ahead, a crowd was gathering, blocking the road. He could see the blue flags of Action Française fluttering above the sea of heads, hear the angry chants of the mob.
"France for the French! Death to the traitors! Vive le Roi!"
Levi's knuckles whitened on the steering wheel. He was all too familiar with the Action Française and their ilk. They'd been a thorn in the side of Algerian Jews for years, but since the fall of the Metropole, their rhetoric had grown even more vicious. They blamed the Jews for everything from the Commune's victory to the economic hardships of the military government to the existence of the Republican government itself, and they weren't shy about expressing their hatred with fists and clubs.
He slowed the truck and looked desperately for a way around the crowd. But the narrow streets of the medina left no room for maneuver. He was trapped.
Taking a deep breath, Levi eased the truck forward, praying silently to a God he wasn't sure he believed in anymore. If he could just make it through without drawing attention to himself...
The truck crept forward, inch by painstaking inch. Levi hunched low over the wheel, his heart pounding against his ribs. The chants of the Action Française grew louder, more frenzied, as he neared the edge of the crowd.
"Non, non, la France bouge, elle voit rouge! Non, non, assez de trahisons! Non, non, la France bouge, elle voit rouge! Non, non, assez de trahisons!"
A knot of blue-shirted men broke from the throng, moving to block his path. Levi braked, fighting down the urge to gun the engine and plow through them. That would only make things worse. The men surrounded the truck, staring at the stenciled address on the side - twisting into hate as soon as they recognised his quartier.
One of them, a burly brute with a scar down his cheek, stepped forward and slapped his palm against the hood. "Where do you think you're going, huh?" he sneered. "This is a French street. No room for your kind here."
Levi licked his dry lips, trying to keep his voice steady. "Please, monsieur. I'm just trying to get home. I don't want any trouble."
"Hear that, boys?" the scarred man jeered. "The Jew doesn't want any trouble! Well, maybe you should have thought of that before you betrayed France, huh? Before your kind in the banks and factories sold us out to the Kaiser, and left France to the mercy of the Reds!"
The mob roared its approval, pressing closer to the truck. Levi could feel their breath on his face, see the madness in their eyes. They were like wild animals, whipped into a blind frenzy.
"I've never betrayed anyone," he said, trying to keep his voice calm. "I'm a loyal French citizen, just like you."
"Liar!" The scarred man slammed his fist on the hood, making Levi flinch. "You're a parasite, sucking the lifeblood from true Frenchmen! A rootless cosmopolitan, with no allegiance to King, God or country! We're sick of you lot, with your greasy hands in everyone's pockets. Maybe it's time someone taught you Yids a lesson!"
The crowd surged forward, hands clawing at the truck, at Levi. He cringed back, certain that at any moment they would drag him out and tear him limb from limb.
But then, miraculously, the shot of a revolver cut through the din.
The crowd went silent and turned, towards the direction of a tall man in the uniform of the Gendarmerie.
"That's enough! Let him through!"
The mob parted reluctantly.
"This isn't worth our time," the policeman said.
"We have bigger traitors to deal with. The Syndicalists, secessionists, insurrectionists. They're the real enemy."
The scarred man looked mutinous, but he backed away from the truck. "You're right, Lieutenant. We'll save our strength for the real fight."
The policeman nodded curtly and walked up to Levi's window through. "Get out of here, Levi. Next time, I might not be here to save your hide", he whispers.
Levi nods. "I'll have Rachel send your wife a basket as thanks, Jacques".
Then, almost casually, Levi grabbed a cigarette carton and matchbook, and rested his arm on the windowsill. Jacques leaned into the cabin.
To those fanatics outside, it looked like he was giving the Jew a well-deserved beating, or an inpromptu search on the fifth-columnist. A good enough deception for Jacques to slap Levi in the back and surreptitiously slip the pick-me-ups into his hand.
Stepping back, Jacques waved Levi through.
Levi didn't need to be told twice. He stepped on the pedal, the truck lurching forward through the gap in the crowd.
In the rearview mirror, he could see the mob closing in behind him, their attention already turning to some new target to hunt.
As he left the Casbah behind and entered the European quarter, the streets widened and the buildings grew grander, their Art Deco facades gleaming in the fading light. But even here, signs of strain were evident. Sandbags and barbed wire surrounded government buildings, and armed soldiers with Adrian helmets and kepis patrolled in pairs, their eyes hard and wary.
The sun was sinking low on the horizon as Levi turned onto his street. The muezzin's call to evening prayer echoed from the nearby mosque, mingling with the distant sounds of the city - honking horns, shouting voices, the occasional burst of gunfire and the ringing of a church bell in a vain attempt to drown out the call to prayer.
Algiers was a powder keg these days, with tensions between the French Exiles and the native Algerians constantly threatening to explode into violence. The military junta did their best to keep a lid on things, but Levi knew it was only a matter of time before the whole rotten regime came crashing down. The only question was whether it comes before the attempted Reclamation, or after.
He pulled the truck into the narrow alley beside his building and killed the engine. For a moment he just sat there, hands trembling on the wheel, as the adrenaline drained away and left him feeling weak and shaky.
That had been too close. If Jacques hadn't intervened... Levi shuddered, not wanting to think about what would have happened. He'd heard stories of Jews who'd fallen into the hands of Action Française. Beaten, humiliated, even killed, their deaths brushed off as "unfortunate accidents." In the French Republic, Jewish lives were cheap. Not as cheap as an Algerian, but still cheap.
Wearily, he climbed out of the truck and made his way up the rickety stairs to his apartment. Inside, his wife Rachel was waiting, her face pinched with worry.
"You're late," she said, hurrying to embrace him. "I was so afraid... I heard on the radio there was trouble in the streets."
Levi held her close, breathing in the familiar scent of her hair. "It was nothing," he lied. "Just a traffic jam. You know how it is."
Rachel pulled back, searching his face.
"You're sure? You look pale." "I'm just tired. It was a long day." Levi mustered a smile.
"Is David home?" "He's in his room, studying. He wants to be an engineer, build things to help the people. I worry for him, Levi. A Jewish boy, with dreams like that... it's dangerous."
"I know. But we can't crush his hopes. Not now. He needs something to believe in."
Rachel sighed and leaned her head on his shoulder. "We all do. But I'm afraid, Levi. Afraid of what's happening to our city, our people. Every day it gets worse. And the Marshal... All he and his army clique cares about is that this hatred, the violence is useful, emotions to be redirected to restoring the Metropole. When will it end?"
Levi paused, thinking. But he could only shake his head and slump his shoulders.
"I don't know," Levi admitted. "But we'll survive. That's all we can do."
Outside, the last light of day faded from the sky, and the rumble of armoured cars announced the start of curfew. Another night of huddling in the dark, praying that the knock on the door wouldn't come. Another night of fear under the eyes of a government that promises liberty, equality, fraternity. But even as the darkness closed in, Levi held tight to a stubborn flicker of hope. Hope that somehow, someday, the tide would turn.
That the true France - the France of reason, of enlightenment, of "liberté, égalité, fraternité" - would come. Where workers can decide their own fate, and not the whims of a desperate, paranoid, tyrannical "republic". A France of the Communes.
Until then, all they could do was endure. And pray that dawn will come.

2024.03.19 00:03 Wolfgang659 Gifted and Talented Education GATE Conspiracy

My name is Nicholas,
I've lurked on this particular Reddit post for years now. It's taken me this long to compile my experiences for understanding and healing. I want to start with what other users and I share. Some traits have a few differences, but I match up 90% percent or close to. Also, I had similar experiences with shadow people, law enforcement encounters, military families, and even my military service, including the specific function I was fulfilling during my time serving that wasn't a part of my job description.
Below is a comprehensive breakdown of how this ties into the GATE conspiracy for my lived experience.
-Blue eyes (hazel seems equally familiar) Brown Eyes
-Occipital Bun (aka math bump on the back of skull = Neanderthal trait) Yes
-Birth complications (like weeks early or not breathing) Unsure
-Near Death Experience (particularly drowning) Had to be saved by a Jersey Shore lifeguard when I was in elementary school.
-Lack of memory or GATE (we all did many, many hours there, and it's all very vague) Yes
-Windows were covered in all GATE classrooms- Brown paper covered windows, check.
-Tendency to be followed (abductions and general tracking, too) I had an experience in Haifa, Israel, in 2016, where a Marine I was out with while bar hopping was abducted and escaped. I believe they got the wrong guy.
-Law enforcement has been extremely lenient and easy during chance encounters since I was a child. I was a Law and Public safety major in high school, and the teacher was a former Police officer and Corrections officer.
-High IQs - I've been told
-Highly intuitive and sensitive children- I live it every day.
Other similarities that are less common but a few exGATErs agree on too;
-Interest in /x/ phenomenon (occult knowledge) - Had a Wiccan aunt introduced me to all sorts of esoteric beliefs and studies- I am still fascinated. Not just Wiccan practice, but all of them.
-Heavy early twenties drug experimentation period - Lots of weed, lots of stimulant abuse (caffeine, cigarettes, vapes, I abused Adderall maybe two times, but only one pill per escapade. I also drank a lot while in service, and I've done psychedelics in my mid-twenties.
-Forehead scars- I was learning how to shoot my new rifle, and I placed my forehead too close to the scope and the recoil caused the scope to hit between my eyes, causing bleeding and a permanent scar.
-I couldn't pronounce the letter "R" in early speech therapy for my life.
-Firstborn sons Thirdborn son, first one in the military.
-Migraines- No, not that I remember.
-Israeli art student girlfriend (not even joking) Potentially? I had an artsy girlfriend whom I had my first sexual encounter with while in 7th grade. Growing up where I grew up, it wouldn't be a surprise if she was Israeli or Jewish.
-Premonitions/prophetic dreams- Yes.
-Above average intuition- Yes
My name is Nicholas,
Early life summary :
I grew up thirty minutes from the Twin Towers on the opposite side of the Hudson River in New Jersey; my father worked in Newark, New Jersey, and watched the collapse of the Twin Towers from the rooftop of the business he was the manager of. My uncle worked down the street from the Twin Towers and was present for the attacks. I was around six years old when the attack happened, and I'm almost sure I saw the smoke from the attack and the collapse. My family and I moved to a rural community in Northwestern, New Jersey, when I was around eight. I will reserve my GATE experience for a separate section; this portion is more for the reader to understand the gravity of my childhood leading up to GATE and post-GATE experiences before my time in service.
My room as a young boy was decorated with portraits of various Allied leaders of World War 2, whether it was Roosevelt, Churchill, and others. I also had pictures of maps of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the locations of where the atomic bombs landed marked on the map, and routes in and out of the city. It was like any other map, but it was a military one. I had US propaganda posters and pictures from the period as well. One is the famous Uncle Sam photo of him pointing at the person passing by and saying, "I want you."
(Info for reference - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncle_Sam ) I also had various warplanes hanging from the ceiling; the one I remember the most was the Enola Gay, a plane famous for its use in the atomic bombs being dropped on Hiroshima
( Info on Plane here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enola_Gay ).
Mind you, I was no older than 14 years old at this point. I watched every war movie and TV show from back in the 40s to the present day (mid-2000s). I had every single documentary and more. I was also at a very advanced reading level for my age, and I had been reading Dante Alighieri before middle school. Specifically, his work titled "Inferno."
( Info on Inferno here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inferno_(Dante)) ). For those uninitiated, it's a very high-level book. I look back now as an adult and ask myself how I could have read that as a child, but I did. This plays into something that is taking place in the present day. I took an aptitude test through the VA to access a specific education benefit. One of the aspects of this test was reading comprehension, and I scored in the ninety-nine percentile; this means I scored the highest I could score.
Gate Experience
My gate experience is quite fuzzy. I remember doing tests with the various Cards, the Rorschach test, the brown headphones with the curly cable leading to a CD player, the brown paper-covered windows, and even some sort of test or something that's hard to describe that I did on the computer. I remember taking images of little soldiers and setting them up in formations on the screen. Of course swordsmen in the front, archers in the back. That portion is incredibly fuzzy. I have no memories of the people who gave these tests, who they were, or what they looked like. I do remember attending therapy in high school, and I was incredibly hesitant to speak about my younger experience with my therapist. Is it connected to this GATE experience? I'm unsure. What sticks out to me most importantly is the drinking of the pink liquid. I remember the cups were either plastic or paper, small shot cups that could be used to deliver medication to someone—something you see at the hospital or doctor. To this day, I do not remember what the liquid was. I do remember it tasting like that pink cough syrup. But I have a feeling it wasn't that. What it was I'm unsure. Much like other Reddit users you have commented on this post, I, too, was separated from my normal classmates during this period.
I've done a lot of reading on Gifted and Talented Education, specifically on the "conspiracy" side of it.
Here's a podcast about the GATE program; it also provides images of the various tests they would conduct and even the headphones we used.

Highschool
Rather than attending what I would describe as a "normal high school," I attended a technical school that included shop classes that took three or four periods out of the day depending on my current grade (i.e., Sophomore, etc..) Each year, the time spent in the shop class increases from two to three and then from senior year to four. For example, some of the shop classes were nursing, welding, carpentry, auto mechanics, and, more importantly, my shop class was named "Law and Public Safety." Within this shop class, I had a teacher who was a retired law enforcement officer and, at one point, a Corrections Officer. We will call him Bob. Bob was very open about his support of the military, law enforcement, and various forms of public service, including Fire Departments and Emergency Squads (EMTs/Paramedics). Portions of the class were concentrated on physical fitness; other portions were focused on current event research and study. We had to research a topic and then do a presentation about said topic every week. We, of course, studied law, Miranda rights, and various portions of the US government in our class, including the Justice System, the Executive branch, and the Legislative Branch. We also had speakers from all walks of military, police, and emergency personnel. During one year, I believe it was my senior year, we had a field trip to a Boeing aircraft facility. Unfortunately, I could not attend due to one of my low grades in a class. I believe it was math. I wouldn't say I liked high school math and most of my teachers, thus leading to a bad grade. But I digress. Another large portion of our time in class was visits from military recruiters: Navy, Army, Air Force, and the Marine Corps. I have been fascinated with the Marines since I was a child. There was no question whether or not I would join in my parents' eyes; it was just a matter of when. I would speak with Marine Recruiters every chance I had in high school, whether in shop class or during lunch when they had various tables set up in the lunch room with the now infamous pull-up bar. (Which, by the way, was to test children and their physical fitness to see if they were candidates for military service, the caveat being that the children who accomplished the said goal of pull-ups would be rewarded with a free bag or some drinkware that had the Marine logo on it.) So, as a teenager, I was exposed to my way into the military through recruiters when I was fourteen. I told my mom, "You will sign my contract now as a seventeen-year-old, or I will enlist anyway when I turn eighteen." She knew my choice was always going to be infantry. She signed my paperwork. I was also involved in a year-long training regiment before enlisting. We called this the Delayed Entry Program.
(Info on DEP here- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_Entry_Program).
We learned various forms of Marine Corps knowledge and culture, and of course, physical fitness was a significant portion of our weekly meetings, which were usually held on Fridays.
MILITARY SERVICE- I served in the United States Marine Corps from 2014-2018. I was an Infantryman, and my specialty was a MOS (Military Occupation Specialty) called 0352, also known as an Antitank Missile Gunner. Scanning the battlefield for enemy vehicles and identifying and appropriately engaging the target were my primary purposes -my job description- and I ended up making ties to posts similar to what other users have described as military intelligence. A bit of background on my military family (if that isn't evident in today's America, I implore you to ask friends of yours who served whether or not they have a family member who served or is serving. More than likely, that answer will be Yes.)
My father served on the USS La Salle (Page Here- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_La_Salle_(AGF-3)) )
I don't have much connection with my parents, especially my father. I'll talk more about that later.
The TLDR concerning the Wiki is that it was a command and intelligence ship my father served on in the 1980s. The ship's home port during that period was Naval Support Activity Bahrain, in Bahrain an island country located in the Middle East. At this time, the wars in the Middle East haven't occurred yet. My dad admitted he was floating around the Arabian Gulf on various intelligence-gathering operations in Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries.
(Info on Bahrain here- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahrain )
My grandparents served in the Army, one on active duty, another a national guardsman. One of them is alive, another I never met due to him dying before my birth.
My Grandfather, who was on my mother's side, was an integrator during Vietnam; from what I understand, he stayed stateside. (To what degree I'm unaware) The assumption here is that prisoners of war were sent stateside for various levels of intelligence gathering.
My Grandfather on my father's side I know very little about. He was in Indo-China during World War 2
(Info on Indo-China herehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Indochina_in_World_War_II ). It comprised Cambodia, Laos (from 1899), the Chinese territory of Guangzhouwan (from 1898 until 1945), and the Vietnamese regions of Tonkin in the north, Annam in the center, and Cochinchina in the south. The capital for most of its history (1902–1945) was Hanoi; Saigon was the capital from 1887 to 1902 and 1945 to 1954. This is just some info pulled from Wiki.
Always Faithful-Semper Fidelis, I served in the United States Marine Corps between 2014 and 2018. As mentioned previously, my job as a Marine was to not only destroy tanks but to identify them and understand both the capabilities and limitations of each vehicle, including what country it originated from, what category of armored vehicle (Armored Personnel Carrier, Tank, Infantry Fighting Vehicle etc) its weapon system and most importantly how to destroy the vehicle with two different weapon systems named the FGM-148 Javelin or Advanced Antitank Weapon System-Medium,( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FGM-148_Javelin ). Another is called The Saber, also known as the BGM-71 TOW in the military ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BGM-71_TOW ).
To sum up my training in that job, I had to memorize fifty different NATO and Non-Nato vehicles by the way they looked during day time, night time, and through various thermal or night vision optics, how they sounded, and the multiple weapon systems that these vehicles had and how to effectively destroy them. I was damn good at it, or at least the identifying piece, but more on engaging the enemy vehicles later. I took pride in being the "nerd" of the infantry as our other infantry peers were jokingly and semi-seriously calling us. One of the many final tests we had to complete was one where we were shown an enemy vehicle on a screen and had five seconds to identify the vehicle and what country it belonged to on our written test. We had to do this for all fifty vehicles.
( What is NATO? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO )
It felt incredibly reminiscent of that scene in Star Wars Commando where you're a Clone sitting behind what can be described as a child using a futuristic computer inputting answers incredibly fast on the screen.
(Video for Context https://youtu.be/CL5i33CTld8?si=Rbh72TNTq1MUXNLI&t=27 )
What I found myself doing quite often was kind of embarrassing to ordinary infantrymen, especially as a junior enlisted Marine in the infantry. Since my MOS consisted of engaging armored vehicles, I went to a mounted platoon. These types of platoons are called CAAT or Combined Anti-Armor Teams. They are normally comprised of eight vehicles, two squads, and four vehicles per squad or "section," as we call it. We had HMMVVs and MRAP/ MATV Vehicles at our disposal.
(Info on vehicles here-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRAP https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oshkosh\_M-ATV
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humvee )
I drove these vehicles quite often, and I wouldn't say I liked it. I wanted to be a gunner or a dismount, but I was the driver due to my rank and lack of experience. Turns out driving isn't easy. I have to take responsibility for an entire vehicle and the lives of up to four other people in the vehicle—and in some cases, like the MRAP, more lives—ten fully equipped passengers, to be exact, in the MRAP.
In Marine infantry culture, being the driver, in my experience, was always reserved for the junior guy, the shitbag NCO, or someone just filling a need in the platoon. Which, in my thought process, could make more sense. Give the guy you trust the least the reins of a multi-million dollar vehicle with troops and a pretty expensive weapon system. FYI It doesn't make sense through that lens.
In Syria, I found myself transporting the operations Commander around various parts of Northern Syria during the Raqqa Offensive of 2017. I also found myself transporting VIPs and what I can surmise were intelligence agents of either the military or CIA to and from meet and greets with The Kurdish militia group known as The Peoples Defense Units, also known as YPG/YPJ. I was also invited to these meetings with men in Marine Corps Desert Camo Fire Resistant Operational Gear, commonly known as FROG gear. (Context Here- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army_Combat_Shirt )
Their looks, how they spoke, and the nature of calling them by pseudo-first names raised many eyebrows in my then 20-year-old brain. They wore the same uniform, but I know a Marine when I see one, and I know who isn't. They weren't. At least not your average infantry Marine.
We sat with these Kurdish fighters and had Chai tea, many, many, many French light cigarettes, food, and chit-chat. But it wasn't for fun; we were working and uncovering what was going on in the militia's ranks. Unfortunately, I cannot remember a lot of these meetings. Portions of my deployment still escaped me due to the nature of the destruction I witnessed. Children playing around undetonated bombs and having to withhold supplies from starving people out of fear of accidentally running someone over in a crowd due to them finding out Americans were giving out water and food. At least, that is what we were told.
A few other points of interest
I would also transport supplies to a base known as the "Concrete factory," where the militia group and special forces would operate. These militias were getting brand new uniforms and weapons, including BGM 71 TOW, the heavy anti-armor weapon system I specialized in.
I was in on every single convoy brief or troop movement as a Corporal; I was also briefed multiple times in the special forces tent located at our airfield called the Kobani Landing Zone.
This comes back to the cultural differences in the Marines. To reiterate, being a driver is usually reserved for lower-ranking enlisted, "bad" Marines or out of necessity. However, contrary to those beliefs, I was privy to a tremendous amount of information. Usually reserved for leaders of higher rank. At this point, I was a Corporal, an E-4—the starting point of becoming a Non-Comissioned officer. I was a junior non-commissioned officer promoted within that year, and this was my first deployment as an NCO. This is not normal, at least in my experience and how I was made to feel about the situation. I was also compelled by my command while stateside to visit the S-2 Shop quite often. The S-2 shop is military intelligence. Rooms where you turn your phone off, leave it outside in a lock box, and have to be let in by someone with a code were quite often rooms I entered while stateside.
(Peoples Defense Units Wiki)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People%27s_Defense_Units
(Battle of Raqqa Wiki)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Raqqa_(2017))
I can provide proof of military service, photos, and whatever else users would like to skim through. I will not include information that might doxx me or anyone I worked with.
I will leave you with this.
All lies come to the surface, and truth will prevail.

2024.03.18 01:53 Artmantrotsky11 [LORE] Little Boxes

Penn had been straddling on the edge of lunacy since his arrival in Caribou. Every morning, waking up to the sound of car traffic on the third floor of a cramped condo, forced to endure the tragedy of having to meet and work closely with Ron’s cabinet of farmers who thought themselves prodigal revolutionaries, ready to fight and die like Comrade Mao to continue their permanently-failing socialist ‘experiment’. He related nothing to these men, and he constantly scorned Ron for even beginning to think that these rural fuckwit hicks who fought in Gallipoli and Normandy could even begin to fathom what he and Ron had gained in Mandalay, or Myetkyena. They didn’t understand what guerilla war meant. Childer’s had turned the CMLA into the new Red Army; soldiers reported to commissars — propaganda officers! — what a disgrace to what Marx had written! He stormed into Ron’s office for the second time that day, screaming histrionic at the idea of integrating the Soviet military. He paced around the room, twitching at the buzz of every hanging light.
“I just don’t understand, Ron, I don’t understand even a little. This goes against everything we’ve been working towards! Having suits like that worming themselves into the PLANE is going to spell nothing but disaster for us, I can tell you that. The Ohio Politburo are already in extremis, and you think those —”
Ron, sitting calmly at his desk, interrupted Penn with grace, “The Ohio Politburo is doing just fine, and their situation is excellent. Your bias is scathing, Law.”
Penn grimaced and paced to stand by the wide door frame that dominated an entire wall of Ron’s homely office, glancing between the muted watercolor portraits of Marx, Lenin, and Stalin that Ron’s daughter had painted for him, to hang above the door. He stopped himself from leaving, and turned to Ron once more.
“I think, one day, we’re all going to be on a chopping block because of the daft baloney you’re letting Childer’s get away with. I don’t want to hear anything about his reasoning for bringing Canada into this, but I know whose fault it’ll be when I’m sitting in a ditch riddled with lead.”
Ron shook his head. “You are crackbrained, Law. If you can’t see the reasoning behind this, despite everything Childers and I have said, I really can’t imagine how you expect to stay in line with us when things get tough.”
Penn nearly popped a blood vessel. What an asinine remark. “Things have been tough for nearly ten goddamn years! You’ve just made it harder for us to accomplish what we’ve set out to do! If you truly believe that sending cadres into Quebec is a level call, I might as well send my sorry ass to the front lines of McAdams to die like a hero, and not a petulant bug like Trotsky!”
Ron glared. “Equating any man to Bronstein isn’t going to win you any favor with them, Law. I think you need to visit the Red Cross to get yourself checked up on.”
Penn’s face was an angry convulsion. His trips to the Red Cross always ended in some gormless prescription by a Committee Doctor that had no clue what he spoke of. He wasn’t to subject himself to any substances but cigarettes until this revolution was over. He needed the clarity of his mind to continue his work. He just wished his work could be done in his isolated cabin, near Lebanon. Not here, in what might as well be the fucking arctic circle filled with suits and foreign faces.
“I go to that hospital again and it’ll be in a bodybag. Shouldn’t take long anyways; I’m sure sidewinders from Ontario will be dropping torpedoes on HQ any day now.”
He stormed out and headed for the one public door that led out of the CMLA Headquarters. He needed to get some fresh air, somewhere far, far away from the Canadian border.

2024.03.17 18:21 AsleeplessMSW What's it all really for? Social work, politics, disillusionment, and Propaganda

So, the first thing I'll say is happy Social Work month!! 😁👊 It's easy to lose sight of the differences we are able to make in people's lives, especially in the rush of the world we live in, and it's important to reflect upon that.
Not only is it important for us to reflect on that as individuals, it's important to reflect on what social work means for an ever changing world that is either experiencing a growth spurt or falling apart, and maybe both at the same time. Faith and fear are ours alone to manage, but as the world changes, so do it's needs, and so must how we think about what social work means for supporting it's well being in the broadest context.
Regarding the rush of the world we live in, it has increased dramatically in the past 100 years. Not too long before that was the industrial revolution that set a number of things in motion, but as we focus on the world around us, with all the rush of information, not too much processing of how things have developed over time gets done, and that makes a lot of sense when we look at it in terms of information and communication. Overload is a real thing. We all have to choose carefully what to focus on in every moment, because we can only really process a fraction of what the world asks us to process.
So, something that's not exactly pleasant to think about is how Social Work arose to support labor in British colonies in Africa. Whether we like it or not, Social Work serves the purpose of supporting labor in being well enough to work to produce capital. If labor isn't well enough to work, capital suffers. That's not something you'll hear a lot though. The media generally informs people's understanding of the world's functioning overall, and is increasingly full of either what people want you to hear or what they think you want to hear, usually a combination of both. It presents a paradox that can't be resolved with the information used to create it. (Thesis, Antithesis, Synthesis, Immanuel Kant) Bombardment with this contributes to overload, polarized thinking, and group think while usually not actually being very relevant to our everyday functioning. This is why I usually encourage clients to avoid or limit their news media intake.
To shed some light on that, why it happens, why it's so frustrating, why it's so hard to see the other 'side'; I think it's very important to understand what propaganda is, how it developed, why it's ubiquitous, and what it means to us as social workers.
Sigmund Freud's nephew was named Edward Bernays. Early in the 20th century, he created the term 'propaganda' to refer to his ideas about influencing the thoughts and feelings of the masses in order to shape public opinion. His ideas were quite successful. He helped make it socially acceptable for women to smoke cigarettes, doubling the market share by manipulating public sentiment toward women's liberation efforts. He was also consulted by Woodrow Wilson about how to get America to support entering WW1, and was successfully shaped public opinion with 'Make the world safe for democracy!'
In 1928, he wrote a book simply titled "Propaganda". In it, he made the case for how public opinion must be manipulated for social progress to occur, outlined in context by chapter. Chapter 9 is "Propaganda in Social Service" (Bernays knew well the importance of social services to the establishment). The chapter begins by making a very astute remark... "The public relations counsel is necessary to social work. And since social service, by its very nature, can continue only by means of the voluntary support of the wealthy, it is obliged to use propaganda continually."
In a previous chapter, he talks about an example of a politician who seeks to get elected and lower tarrifs. Instead of 'vote for low tarrifs, it's good for all of us!', Bernays suggests "He would dramatize the issue, perhaps by having prominent men boycott woolen clothes, and go to important functions in cotton suits, until the wool schedule was reduced. He might get the opinion of social workers as to whether the high cost of wool endangers the health of the poor in winter.". The whole book is available for free online, and I highly recommend reading it. (https://libcom.org/article/propaganda-edward-l-bernays)
What you are taught about in school is what's relevant to you having a frame of mind to go out and support the Social Work profession (capital letters referring to the institution, not directly the task itself). What did they teach you about economics when you went to school? For me it was Keynesian economics only, in policy class. That makes sense, that's how the institution prefers social workers view economics, but it's skewed, and doesn't help one understand what's wrong with how the world is functioning.
In general, what I mean to say here is that we need to take time to recognize the ways which we are manipulated by the marketing of politics and media and how that can put us at odds with our clients and with each other. I think it's particularly important to acknowledge these issues as the quadrennial season of acrimonious bickering approaches.
As I said earlier, our faith and fear are ours alone to manage. Remember to support those around you in doing what they feel they need to do to appropriately manage that, and even if you can't understand why someone would manage that in one way or another, at least acknowledge that we're fighting the same war for our minds, and its not easy for anyone.
Thank you for doing what you do, and if you've read all of this, I hope it can help bring some insight and peace.
