2024.05.19 13:26 maicao999 Best modern Groove Metal/Neo-Thrash bands?

I've noticed that groove metal stopped being a relevant genre for a while now. Maybe since acts such as Chimaira, Ektomorf and Lamb of God.
I've always liked the blues-y/chugging vein of the genre. Any examples of new bands or bands that are still active?
In already really into bands like Malevolence.

2024.05.19 13:16 Adventurous_End_7650 A video shooter's perspective on R5 (+ settings)

In the past four weeks, I've deep-dived into the ideal Video settings for my R5. I was never happy with what the camera gave me, so I want to share the following insights just in case they may benefit some of you. It's going to be a bit long winded, read on if you're a nerd and perfectionist like me... Shout out to Jason of Points in Focus on YouTube, as well as Rodrigo Pollo, Josh Sattin and Todd Dominey, who were some of my many sources. There's also a Redditor that has highlighted the wonkiness of Cinema Gammut colors (hi!) and I agree with them.
  1. Shoot in LOG – IMO, yes, you should. Only this unlocks 10 Bit 4:2:2 which grades really well and runs smoothly provided you're on Silicone machines. Arguably, 10 Bit 4:2:2 h265 in LOG was the true game changing feature the R5 brought into the market, so take advantage.
  2. For LOG post production, the Canon LUTs work well if you expose as Canon thinks you should. This gets technical quickly and if you just follow the ETTR dogma, Canon's LUTs will clip your highlights into oblivion. A proper CST workflow in Resolve works better but is complicated for novices. In any case, you will have to test your exposure / CST / LUT workflow so I highly recommend you get yourself familiarised with Zebras and False Color tools (if you use an external monitor). The histogram on the R5 is absolutely useless for video exposure. Clipped highlights, not noisy shadows, are the biggest weakness of the R5's image, in my opinion.
  3. But which LOG flavour and color space? This comes down to your taste, but I have found the following produces the most natural looking footage. I shoot CLOG 1 / BT 2020 at a base ISO of 400. Like everyone else, I jumped on the CLOG 3 / Cinema Gammut Train when the firmware update hit, but I just didn't like the footage 90% of the time. It is proven that the sensor's dynamic range in photography mode is better at ISO 400 than it is at 800 (not surprising) in the Electronic shutter mode (which is what the R5 also uses for video). It's not a huge difference from 800 to 400, but it's there - half to one stop. This was also revealed in the CineD tests – both of them, the initial one as well as the one when they re-tested with CLOG 3. In the manual, Canon claims that CLOG 3 has more dynamic range then CLOG – in theory, maybe. The curve may be designed to give more DR. But on the R5? None of the tests you can find online have properly proven this. The DR is distributed differently, but not necessarily increased. There ARE tests, however, that show the sensor performs better at ISO 400 - so that's what I go with. Bonus: Why not use BT 709? Well, that would defeat the purpose of capturing LOG at 10 Bit 4:2:2 in the first place. You would be throwing out a bunch of color information already at capture.
  4. There can be severe horizontal Banding in underexposed areas. When I first saw this, I couldn't believe my eyes (check out Josh Sattin's comparison of Z8 with R5 on YouTube to see what I mean). A 5K€ camera was producing big horizontal chunky lines of banding running across the image. I contacted Canon and they claimed not to be able to see anything. WTF. I thought my camera was broken. Then I found this in the manual: With Canon Log, movies may be affected by horizontal banding, depending on the subject or shooting conditions. So I didn't imagine things. It's right there. In. The. Manual. To avoid this, expose correctly. In practical use, a non issue, but still leaves a bitter taste.
  5. Cinema Gammut, avoid. In my experience, it gives crazy saturation to red, magenta, orange. It may be a wider color space than 2020, but it can look extremely unnatural. I had rare occasions where it did work well, for example with greens and blues, but skin tones were always a pain point. (If you do want to use CLOG 3 and Cinema Gammut, I suggested you go to -1 saturation in the Canon Log Settings.) I realise this point is the most subjective, so if you have a great CineGammut workflow running, I applaud you!
  6. External Recording – it may work for some of you, but I never bothered. What turns me off the Ninjas is their cost, the noisy fan and hunger for batteries as well as bulk and weight. I shoot mostly Gimbal work nowadays and every gram counts. I bit the bullet and got the fastest Card on the market for internal shooting. If you do use Ninjas, note this: The HDMI interface on the R5 is version 2.0 and it does NOT transmit Cinema Gammut correctly, so set to BT 2020. You will still have to mess around with the legalize settings and post-production hassle (ProRes RAW doesn't work on the dominant Color grading software, Resolve). For me it's a no. Bonus: Make sure your HDMI cable is at least a 2.0 version!
  7. Sound: Manual recording set to a quarter strength gives you the best audio dynamic range (nod to Jason of Points in Focus, who tested this). Run your mic hot-ish and you'll be fine at this level, it works well with the Rode or Sennheiser video mics. If audio is important for you, AVOID IPB Light as it uses compressed AAC audio. The non-compressed LPCM at 48 Khz / 16 Bit that you get with ALL-I, RAW, IPB is pretty decent and noise-free.
  8. I can't stress this enough: avoid Auto White Balance! The R5 dials in aggressive amounts of Tint "correction" to combat any perceived color shifts. It just doesn't work well at all unless you're in perfectly clean 6500K daylight. If you shoot LOG h265, getting White Balance right is critical to getting good skintones. Log doesn't mean RAW, you ARE baking color into the image. Unfortunately the Custom WB function is a mess in R5 for video, but you can actually eyeball this quite well off a monitor, if said monitor is set up correctly with a LUT. I use a color meter (LUMU Power 2) to verify, and it helps.
  9. Rolling Shutter. 8K RAW as well as 4K HQ give you the most rolling shutter at about 15 ms and this is certainly visible in faster paced Gimbal work. Rolling shutter drops to around 9 ms in regular 4K, which is what I now use for Gimbal work. Though it's not a full halving, it's a significant, visible improvement for any panning. I still shoot talking heads in 4K HQ as the Rolling shutter is not an issue with static work. As for my Canon Log settings, I go +1 sharpening for 4K HQ and +3 for regular 4K. That matches them reasonably well.
  10. 12-Bit RAW has about another half to one stop more DR in the highlights, but is also tougher and more fiddly to grade than the 10 Bit H265. It also defaults to CineGammut so it has the same tendency towards saturated reds. (CRAW gets decoded by default as CineGammut in Resolve.) I tend to prefer the look of the 10 Bit 4:2:2 shot in BT 2020 in terms of color. If you do shoot RAW, I again recommend setting to CLOG 1 in camera – not because that Log curve gets baked into the image (it doesn't), but because it unlocks you ISO 400 shooting. RAW capture at ISO 400 in Clog 1 will then allow you to decode in Resolve using the CLOG 2 curve at ISO 400 and reach the theoretical maximum of DR in terms of any video material from the R5.
Point 11 was going to be a wishlist for better features etc. but then I realised, I could buy a R5C... But honestly, the crappy battery performance of that camera really is a deal breaker for me.
Sorry for the long post but I really hope this may help some of you. Good luck and happy shooting!

2024.05.19 13:02 Akranea [F4M] Longterm Overwatch RP!

Hey Roleplayers and Reddit users!
I've been wanting to do this for a while now and I am looking for people who want to play a character of the game (male only) to pair with me (female only character of the game) for some fun longterm RP. I have several plots prepared and ideas to share depending on what character you'd want to write/write with and I am happy to discuss more details and possible plots.
Heroes I am willing to write for this RP would be:
My preference is Gency, but I am terribly terribly picky about this and made a lot of horrible experiences. This is something I kind of want done right and if I don't see that happening, I am not willing to write this. If you are equally interested in building their relationship from the longterm point of view, I'd like to discuss.
Other than that I'll gladly play :
If you have ideas for this, wishes you want to include I am happy to discuss! That being said though, I am a very detailed writer and like it if my partners are as well, two paragraphs should be the least you should be able to write and maybe even extend it a little further. Third person would also be perfect, I think writing in first person is kind of awkward and I am not comfortable doing that.
One of my ideas as example is as follows: Both our characters are on a mission. The two need to work together to gather information, perhaps rescue a fellow agent. It is tense. The alarm is going off, red lights are filling corridors and guards begin to flood the building. They will have to hurry to complete their goal without being caught.
Another idea could be more about the slice of life part, what is happening behind the scenes, maybe even the mental toll these missions and the huge pressure has on the involved people. They could build a proper relationship, work on conquering their fears as well as work on themselves to become better and greater heroes! Naturally, I am in for all the action as well. Let's go beat up some bad (or good) guys!
I am pretty active but I only RP on discord so please keep that in mind. Also, I want to speak out a content warning for mature content. Please send the word hero to me so I know you've read this all in your first message.
I usually write 3 paragraphs as the least amount and would like for my partner to match me.
The following will be a roleplay sample of mine which depicts a semblance of my literacy:
____________________________________________________________________________
Their escape through the ventilation system was not the greatest exit strategic, additionally, it was flawed and their position easily compromised. Amelie had already begun to lead the way towards what she figured was the very edge of the fortress where they'd be able to slither away into the night, but he was certainly not making this any more pleasant with his urgent request to hurry. "I am going as quick as I can, but as you are aware, wet clothes stick to these smooth surfaces perfectly well," and indeed it made it quite difficult to shift along the metal of the shafts. She felt the heat too, though for her the very start was certainly only comforting, drying both their bodies and clothes just a little before they'd soon face the consequences and most likely either burn to charcoal or get some lovely burn marks along their skin. That was what she expected, just until his larger frame pushed and squirmed past her before he could even see the glare she was shooting at him. "What do you think you are doing?" She asked lowly, and watched him repeatedly smack his arrow against the relatively thin wall of the ventilation shaft, that soon bulged and began to give in.
Her attention however was caught by his tattooed arm, which seemed to faintly illuminate the air in bright blue. It was just how the rumors proved. Something about him, about that tattoo he donned on his arm that gave him strength on an unimaginable scale. With great curiosity as she witnessed this did Amelie watch the wall next to them burst open, and him slip outside. No hesitation within her motions she followed, and the both stood shielded from the flames that followed. There was a certain thankfulness within her eyes as she looked upon him, knowing there was no reason for each other to linger. Nodding gently, she bid him a word-less farewell before Amelie too, disappeared into the night.
Months had passed after their run in and the mission report handed to Akande caused him to end up a little displeased over the next few days. He wanted the Shimada to be part of Talon, to have his power under their control and thus, increased the offered amount of money and goods should he ever end up appearing once more. Little did either of them know that the famed spider would soon once more come into the view of the archer.
Brazil, ten in the evening. Music played and echoed through the halls, setting the mood for such a high-class event where drinks were shared, dances were executed and most importantly, deals were made. Amelie attended on behalf of Talon, naturally so as she mostly would serve as informant that very night. As such, her gun was not a piece of her attire tonight.
Amelie stood tall and proud as she always did, and her dress once more proved that she was a confident woman. The black dress vacant of any prints upon it did her body justice. Cutting off high upon her thighs, a slit on the side revealing even more of those long, firm legs, the very front was just as revealing, the V shape cutting a rift between her plump breasts, fitting for a beautiful woman like her while the back was cut deep, revealing that signature spider tattoo on her pale skin that was caressed by the tip of her ponytail.
Her hand was firmly wrapped around a glass of red wine she sipped from while circling the area a little, searching for anyone worth being noted and not quite aware that a familiar archer was in the very same room. She stood with her back towards his direction at first, before she desired to move once more and caught the sight of the archer out of the corner of her eyes. He might have seen her smirk slyly, before she turned away again. Amelie knew when she was the huntress, but she did not approach her prey this time. No, he would need to hunger for a taste of her, and that'd let him approach her while she remained still.
Naturally, her thoughts had wandered to him before, thought back on his warmth he soared her in that locker, and at times she humored the thought of a misses romance, even if she was aware it was foolish and nothing alike her. No, she was the heartless woman that murdered her own husband years back, cold to the touch and emotionless. The perfect weapon that once had a loving heart.

2024.05.19 12:54 KrisKristoffersson Is it common for indie artists in the rock/country/blues genre to use sampled drums?

I’m recording and producing my first EP at home and I’m not sure about whether to use sampled drums or try to record drums. It’ll be a pretty lo-fi EP since I want to do it all by myself.
I have a porta studio and a drummer friend with some OH mics and a drumset - but I’m hesitant about it because I don’t know if I have the skills to record and mix drums so that they sound decent.
What are your experiences? Do you know any good rock/blues/country albums that have sampled drums instead of studio recorded drums? How did you/your band record drums on a low budget? I appreciate any advice and input and would also love to hear some examples!

2024.05.19 12:51 Ready_Positive_6419 Exploring the Quantum Basis of Consciousness: Theoretical Foundations and Empirical Investigations Based on Consciousness Wave Function

Abstract
The quantum consciousness theory, particularly the Orchestrated Objective Reduction (Orch-OR) model proposed by Roger Penrose and Stuart Hameroff, posits that consciousness arises from quantum processes within brain microtubules. This paper addresses the theoretical foundations, significant empirical challenges, and potential experimental approaches to validate this theory, specifically focusing on a consciousness wave function as described by a mathematical model. We propose a series of interdisciplinary studies designed to detect quantum coherence in neural structures, investigate the effects of anesthetics on quantum states, and explore the computational advantages of quantum neural networks. By advancing our understanding of quantum biology and integrating insights from physics, neuroscience, and cognitive science, this research seeks to provide a plausible framework for the quantum basis of consciousness.
Introduction
The nature of consciousness remains one of the most profound and elusive questions in science. Traditional neuroscience views consciousness as an emergent property of complex neural processes. However, the quantum consciousness theory, particularly the Orch-OR model, suggests that quantum mechanical phenomena play a crucial role in conscious experience. This theory proposes that consciousness arises from quantum computations within microtubules, which are key components of the cytoskeleton in neurons (Wikipedia) (Center for Consciousness Studies).

Theoretical Background

The consciousness wave function, ΨΨ, as depicted in the attached image, is described by the equation:
see attached Image: A
https://preview.redd.it/rfcva5mn5d1d1.png?width=936&format=png&auto=webp&s=e25ed51268c38e0167a7f6f933a6d48ff5051704
This equation integrates exponential decay, trigonometric modulation, and sinusoidal perturbations to model the spatial and temporal distribution of consciousness.

Quantum Coherence in Biological Systems

Recent advancements in quantum biology have provided evidence that quantum coherence can exist in biological systems despite the challenges posed by thermal noise. Examples include the role of quantum coherence in avian navigation and photosynthesis, suggesting that biological systems can exploit quantum effects (Wikipedia) (Center for Consciousness Studies).

Help with designing user tips
Hi,
I created a FOSS application for video engineers and entertainment technicians.
This means that the application target users who have a specific domain knowledge, it also means that there are complex interactions which are not clear for users who don't read the docs ( :D )
Specifically for the settings page of the application, I would like to add a floating card that contains tips related to the setting in focus as well as potential links to the documentation.
Some initial requirements are:
  • collocated with the setting they affect
  • only shown on screens that have enough space for it
  • Will contain a title and a small amount of text, potentially with links
I have tried sketching an example (see the blue card in the screenshot below) but I am unsure how to integrate it into the existing design.
Tip element in settings, see the blue card on the right
  • What can be the relationship between the card background and the action colour (the application action colour is blue, as in the switch elements)
  • How can I improve the visibility of the relationship between the tip and the setting it affects
The design generally feels out of place to me, but I am not able to pinpoint how it can be improved.
I have tried adding an arrow pointing to the setting in question, but it felt intrusive and almost spammy.
Any help on how to improve this visually and in terms of usability is appreciated
For the curious
The application in question is a FOSS rundown and event timer manager

2024.05.19 11:43 WouldNotEatPeople Rune Sell Exclusion Settings for Mid-Late Game

Rune Sell Exclusion Settings for Mid-Late Game

Purpose:

  • Sell all 6* blue runes and below
  • Sell all slot 2 flats
  • Sell % legend runes with only one % sub and 3 flat sub
  • Sell % hero runes with only one % sub and 2 flat sub
  • Keep runes with 2 or more % sub
  • Keep all runes with SPD sub (except flat main stat on slot 2)
  • Keep all legend runes with SPD main stat and prefix for reapp
  • Use the same configuration for all dungeons
If you are interested in selling/keeping runes mentioned above using sell exclusion settings, you can follow this guide. Also, if you are still trying to roll for perfect blue runes such as runes with 18 SPD or lower (ungrinded), these settings might sell too much rune and will hurt your progression - Try following other guides or you can try to tweak the settings.

Rune Sell Option

  1. Select all grades - (1* to 6*) and (normal to legend) - This will sell all runes with respect to exclusion setting
Select all runes and grades from 1* to 6*
  1. For slot 2, select flat stats (HP+,ATK+,DEF+) - This will sell all flat runes on slot 2, ignoring the sell exclusion setting
Select flat stats only for slot 2

Sell Exclusion Settings

I did my rune exclusion settings by rune slot and their corresponding available main and sub properties primarily because it looked neater this way. Doing it this way also helped to reduce the number of possible substat combination with respect to their main stat - I had used a different setting with similar purpose before, but it was way messier. This configuration uses all 8 settings so please bear with me.
Setting 1 to 6; (Will only keep hero and legend runes with SPD or % main stat with 2 or more % sub)
• Select all rune set, 6* grade, and legend & hero grade. • Set prefix to yes/no (default) ‣ For main properties; • Setting 1: On slot 1, ATK+ • Setting 2: On slot 2, SPD, HP%, ATK%, DEF% • Setting 3: On slot 3, DEF+ • Setting 4: On slot 4, HP%, ATK%, DEF%, CR, CD • Setting 5: On slot 5, HP+ • Setting 6: On slot 6, HP%, ATK%, DEF%, ACC, RES ‣ For sub properties; • Setting 1-6: Select all percentage subs • Setting 1-6: Leave SPD unticked - will be used in setting 7 • Setting 1: On slot 1, you can't get DEF%, so DEF% is excluded • Setting 3: On slot 3, you can't get ATK%, so ATK% is excluded • By excluding the unavailable subs, you can increase the subs combination to 2 (or more if you want to reduce number of runes). I would still recommend 2 for most players. • Leave the minimum subs to default or customize to your liking. I simply leave it to default since I still roll runes with low base.
Setting 1 (Slot 1) - Main: ATK+ Sub: HP%, ATK%, CR, CD, Res, Acc Sub: 2 Prefix: Yes/No
Setting 2 (Slot 2) - Main: SPD, HP%, ATK%, DEF% Sub: HP%, ATK%, DEF%, CR, CD, Res, Acc Sub: 2 Prefix: Yes/No
Setting 3 (Slot 3) - Main: DEF+ Sub: HP%, DEF%, CR, CD, Res, Acc Sub: 2 Prefix: Yes/No
Setting 4 (Slot 4) - Main: HP%, DEF%, ATK%, CR, CD, Sub: HP%, ATK%, DEF%, CR, CD, Res, Acc Sub: 2 Prefix: Yes/No
Setting 5 (Slot 5) - Main: HP+ Sub: HP%, ATK%, DEF%, CR, CD, Res, Acc Sub: 2 Prefix: Yes/No
Setting 6 (Slot 6) - Main: HP%, ATK%, DEF%, Res, Acc Sub: HP%, ATK%, DEF%, CR, CD, Res, Acc Sub: 2 Prefix: Yes/No
Setting 7; (Will keep all runes with SPD sub regardless of main stat except for slot 2 with flat main stat)
• As before, select all rune set, 6* grade, and legend & hero grade. • Set prefix to yes/no (default) • Only select SPD substat • Set the sub quantity to 1 sub (default) • Leave the minimum subs to default or customize to your liking. Again, I simply leave it to default since I still roll runes with low base.
Setting 7 - Sub: SPD Sub: 1 Prefix: Yes/No
Setting 8; (Will keep all legend runes with SPD main stat regardless of substat, mainly for reapp target)
• Select all rune set, 6* grade, and only legend grade - If you are in the late game, you can also select lesser rune sets that you would consider reapping to further reduce number of runes. • Set prefix to yes if you are only looking for reapp targets for SPD slot 2. If you don't have a lot of SPD runes, just leave it to yes/no (default) • Only select SPD main stat • Select all sub • Set the sub quantity to 1 sub (default). I'll mention it again in case you forgot: I simply leave it to default since I still roll runes with low base.
Setting 8 - Main: SPD Sub: All Prefix: Yes
End note:
In case you haven't noticed xD, I didn't set the minimum substat value for all of the substat since I don't really care about the starting value of the subs. I usually upgrade most of the runes, tricking myself into thinking that they will roll high. I also think that I will be selling too much runes if I were to raise the substat value above the minimum since I am only keeping runes with 2 percentage subs.
If anyone is wondering why I had excluded SPD subs from setting 1 to 6, I just wanted to keep runes with SPD sub regardless of other subs as done in setting 7. This means that runes with flat main stat or runes with only SPD sub and 3 flat subs will be kept as long as it had SPD sub in it (except for slot 2 flats that is set to be sold regardless of the exclusion setting). Therefore, setting 1 to 6 can focus on keeping runes with 2 percentage subs or more.
Also it may seem redundant when I selected SPD main stat in setting 2 and also in setting 8. Setting 2 helps to keep hero and legend SPD runes with 2 percentage sub while setting 8 will keep all legend SPD runes with innate regardless of the subs for reapp purposes.
One of the downside to these settings is that it will sell all runes (legend included) with only one percentage sub. This means that you might miss out on some lucky triples, quads and reapp targets. An unfortunate example would be a legendary CD main stat rune with ATK% as the only percentage sub. If you already have a bunch of reapp targets and typically sell those runes, it's fine I guess.
The other shortcoming to these settings is that rune with flat subs will be sold. For example, if you want to maximize the HP of some units, you would typically look for HP+ sub on HP% rune. When using these settings, it is high likely for those type of runes to be sold off. Having a few more setting slots or different configuration might help.
If you are using a new setting for the first time, try looking at the runes selected, in case the exclusion settings sell runes that you would consider keeping on your account. If the settings applied sell too much of said runes, it is either:
a) I have messed up somewhere b) You might have messed up somewhere c) The setting is unsuitable for your account
I've been using these settings for a while and it gets the job done. But I still check some of the selected runes from time to time just to be sure. I do think that it is pretty ridiculous to have to use 8 exclusion settings just to sell flat slot 2 runes and to keep runes with SPD sub. Go ahead if you need it though. Also, if anyone could think of improvements to these settings, or want to share their settings with similar purpose, I'd appreciate it.

2024.05.19 11:42 AFrostNova Can a language's writing system affect its native speakers memory?

I was recently having a debate with a friend. He is a native speaker of mandarin & cantonese, and while I am a native english speaker. The essence of our discussion was whether or not character based languages innately improve a speakers memory vs alphabet based languages?
Their argument (for) was that this was the same topics such as the argument with Japanese blue v Green & perception. Language you learn affects the way your brain operates, so it is by itself a possible claim. Expanding on this, the number of characters you need to know for fluently engaging in society is significantly larger than the number of letters you need to know. He argued that if you forget a word you can sound it out & guess the meaning from its root and prefixes/affixed. He additionally brought up memorizing stroke order (but my counter there, that stroke order is fairly consistent across characters & intuitiveh
I argued against, as we don't read words one letter at a time anyway. It is remembering whole words, and to that end his own argument (remembering root words, prefixes, etc.) not only makes it comparable to mandarin, but in my opinion the Chinese radical system actually makes it easier to guess the meaning of a new character (at least in traditional) compared to english. Additionally I think the comparison to the "blue/green" studies is unfair - this feels to be a better example of nature v nurture. Does something about being a character based language speaker improve your memory, or does the fact that their (in china) education system emphasis memorization (poetry recitation, etc) lead to it.
That is a huge oversimplification of our discussion it was multiple hours. But the gist is, is there something about chinese & other character based languages that make their speakers better at remembering things?

2024.05.19 11:38 Main_Star2546 Game Abby is too Sociopathic, Hypocritical and Violent to be Likeable (and why there's a chance the show will change this).

The primary criticism levied against Abby is that she is Joel's killer. TLOU had set up Joel and Ellie to be the main characters of the franchise and it was incredibly jarring to see a new character come out of the blue and quickly murder one of them, while irreparably changing the focus of the other. While a valid criticism, this post is not addressing this. It is instead aiming to analyse Abby's character and her choices throughout the story, and outline why they do not make her a "likeable" character.
To put it forwardly, Abby is a sociopath. While Joel is certainly not a saint, Abby is portrayed as somebody who is cold, uncaring and can revel in cruelty. Some of the most notable points highlighting this include:
  1. She tortures Joel to death. It would be perfectly understandable if she had simply executed him on the spot, especially given the reveal of her backstory later. However, she undergoes the decision to draw out his pain and kill him in the most brutal and sadistic way possible. After blowing off his leg, she has Mel apply a tourniquet so that she can keep him alive and continue to make him suffer as she beats him to death. She is only stops because her crewmates eventually felt it had gone long enough. The implication is that she would have continued to torture Joel, including in front of Ellie, as long as she wanted. This action can be sympathetic to some, but there is no way it can in any way be viewed as moral or justifiable.
  2. There is a revelation in the game's dialogue that she had previously tortured Scars to blow off some steam. This clearly demonstrates that her behaviour with Joel was not exceptional. She is somebody who regularly engages in this practice for her own satisfaction.
  3. She sleeps with the partner of her best friend, who is pregnant. Mel had travelled with her to a remote part of the country while pregnant and risking the life of her child to ensure that she could support Abby. There was also a discussion of potentially starting a fight with Tommy's group prior to killing Joel, indicating that violence and a risk of injury and death were anticipated. Regardless of these sacrifices, Abby still allowed her own interests and desires to outweigh the trust and friendship of Mel. She grieved at the death of Mel and Owen but mostly at their loss. She did not display remorse over the fact that she had hurt Mel when she was alive.
  4. Abby appears to take pleasure in the idea of slitting a pregnant woman's throat, specifically acknowledging that she is pregnant. This is just outright disturbing. It is almost universally accepted this is taboo, and there are even examples of animals in nature who know that there is something wrong with killing a pregnant creature. While one could definitely envision Abby killing a pregnant woman *in spite* of the fact that she is pregnant, the idea of her taking any pleasure from knowledge of this fact, even if out of spite, is horrendous.
  5. Abby betrays the WLF, an organisation which she had become a key member and trusted companion of, in order to protect a stranger she had recently met, and decided that she wanted to protect. While it is understandable that she may have had moral hesitations to kill Lev, this may not immediately justify her killing off many of those she once considered friends and companions, and who had provided for her.
  6. Perhaps most importantly, Abby does not reflect on how her newfound choice to protect Lev have essentially made her into a mirror of Joel. In choosing to become a guardian for Lev, she slaughters many of her own people because she protects the new person she has chosen to care about. Her journey to protect Lev strongly mirrors what Joel had done to protect Ellie from the Fireflies. Yet, in spite of this, Abby does not come to reflect on how her journey should make her more empathetic to the man who had hurt her. The main point of the game is empathy, but Abby's conscience is fully set on the idea that Joel is an unforgiveable, unrepentant murderer who took away somebody close to her, but that her own actions are thoroughly justified and immune to any form of scrutiny. She pays no heed to the fact that her actions may have just made many more traumatised Abbys. Additionally, while it would be surprising and probably unrealistic to see Abby wish she could take killing Joel back, she never once acknowledges how her actions traumatised Ellie the same way Joel had traumatised her. As far as she is concerned, she was always right to kill Joel, and any attempts by Ellie to do what she had done, even if for the same reasons, are wrong.
A combination of the above make Abby far too unlikeable. I believe that it there is a strong chance that many of these factors could be watered down or retconned in the new show, if part II is actually played by those working on the show who had no prior experience with the franchise.
  1. Abby may not deliberately and slowly torture Joel to death. It is probably more likely that she will just bash him to death in a fit of rage. Alternatively, if this part of the story is kept it will be mitigated by other changes.
  2. Any reference to Abby torturing random Scars will most likely be removed. Alternatively, it could be changed to killing Scars to blow off steam.
  3. The sex scene will likely be retained (I have zero faith Neil Druckmann will let it be cut), but she will probably show more remorse for it.
  4. This part will most likely be changed to Abby saying "an eye for an eye" or "so was Mel", as opposed to "good".
  5. Abby will be highly hesitant at first to kill her own people, but will gradually become numb to it similarly to the game. This is arguably the most forgivable point (audiences miss this sort of thing all the time unless they want to pick on a story) so it probably won't be changed much.
  6. There's a 50/50 chance this could be changed. In all honesty, given the events of TLOU Pt. II it feels almost as if the setup for some genuine character growth for Abby was made but eventually cut because of "executive decisions". It would definitely tie into the message of empathy that the game is supposed to invoke. However, once again noting Neil Druckmann and his tendency to make bad decisions out of spite, there's always the chance that this again could be missed.
These mark many of the arguments I noticed that people had made against Abby's character, and what could probably be changed in the show given how prolific they are.

The Nady CM 90 Cardioid Condenser Mic has been a game-changer in my recording studio. I've been using it for capturing the nuances of my acoustic guitar, snare drum, and piano, and it never fails to impress me with its high sensitivity and extended smooth response. The microphone's sturdy turned-brass housing and internal shockmount ensure that it can withstand even the toughest recording sessions. I also appreciate the fact that it comes with a microphone clip, foam windscreen, and a zipper pouch, making it easy to transport safely.
One of the standout features of this microphone is its transformerless design, which minimizes self-noise. This has allowed me to capture even the subtlest details of my performances without any unwanted background noise. Additionally, the microphone requires 48V phantom power, so it's compatible with most professional mixing boards.
However, there have been a few downsides to using this microphone. For instance, I found that it can sometimes be overly sensitive to certain sound sources, making it difficult to achieve the perfect balance in my recordings. Additionally, the microphone's construction, while sturdy, may not be able to withstand the rigors of constant touring or frequent use in a live environment.
Overall, I would highly recommend the Nady CM 90 Cardioid Condenser Mic to anyone looking to capture high-quality audio recordings. Its versatile design, rugged construction, and impressive performance make it a great addition to any recording studio or live sound setup. In terms of performance, this microphone delivers excellent sound quality, capturing even the most subtle nuances of my vocals. Furthermore, the size and flexibility of the stand make it easy to position the microphone wherever needed, making it perfect for various recording scenarios. Overall, I believe the Zingyou Condenser Microphone Bundle offers exceptional value for its price, providing professional-grade sound quality and durability without breaking the bank.

🔗AKG C414 XLII/ST Stereo Matched Pair Microphones

I've been using the AKG C414 XLII/ST Stereo Matched Pair for a while now, and I must say, it's a game-changer in my home studio. This pair of condenser microphones has a knack for capturing high-fidelity audio, making my recordings sound much more dynamic.
One of the standout features of these microphones is their ability to switch between nine polar patterns. This flexibility allows me to tailor the sound capture for different applications, ranging from vocals to acoustic instruments like guitars or even percussion. The peak hold LED display is also incredibly useful, helping me avoid nasty overload peaks during live performances.
The C414 XLII version stands out from its sibling, the C414 XLS, mainly because of its unique capsule design. This design gives the mic a slightly brighter sound compared to the XLS, while also offering impressive spatial reproduction that's reminiscent of the legendary AKG C12 microphone from 1953.
On the downside, I've noticed that the C414 XLII can be quite sensitive to noise from surrounding sources, such as air conditioning systems. However, the built-in filter helps mitigate this issue, ensuring that my recordings remain clean and free of unwanted interference.
Overall, I've been extremely impressed with the AKG C414 XLII/ST Stereo Matched Pair. It's a versatile, high-quality microphone that has made a significant difference in the quality of my recordings. While it may be a bit pricey, I believe it's a worthwhile investment for anyone serious about capturing professional-sounding audio.

🔗PreSonus PM-2 Matched Pair Cardioid Condenser Microphones

As a reviewer who's been using the PreSonus PM-2 microphones in my little home studio, I can't help but rave about them. These cardioid condenser mics are a gem, offering a surprising level of clarity and versatility for a budget-friendly price.
One of the things that stood out to me was their ability to capture even the most subtle nuances of the acoustic guitar. The cardioid pattern helps deliver an amplified input audio, making it perfect for recording a range of instruments and ensembles.
The golden touch doesn't stop there. The gold-sputtered capsule ensures enhanced conductivity, enabling efficient signal transmission. And did I mention how light they are? The ultra-light chassis makes them incredibly easy to handle and convenient to use.
However, as with any product, there are some cons. Some users have reported issues of durability, with one microphone stopping working after just six hours of use. While this is a concern, it's important to note that these are budget-friendly mics and may not withstand the same level of abuse as higher-priced models.
Overall, I'd say the PreSonus PM-2 microphones are a fantastic choice for anyone looking to create detailed recordings in a studio setting. They offer great sound quality, especially when used in stereo mode. The build quality might not be top-notch, but the value they provide more than makes up for it. So, if you're on the hunt for affordable, high-quality mics, give these a try.

I recently purchased the 5 Core Karaoke Singing Wired Mic, and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed! As a frequent performer at weddings and conferences, I needed a reliable microphone that captured my voice perfectly without any background noise interference. The unidirectional Cardioid Pickup Pattern on this microphone did just that, enhancing my performances and keeping the focus on my voice.
One of the highlights of this microphone is its sturdy build. The steel mesh windscreen and anti-dent ring make it incredibly durable, while its professional XLR connector ensures seamless compatibility with all PA systems. I also appreciated the brilliant and transparent sound quality it delivers, thanks to its ultra-wide frequency response and built-in Pop filter & windscreen.
On the flip side, the 5 Core Karaoke Singing Wired Mic might not be the best option for those who prefer a wireless microphone. Additionally, the lack of an on/off switch may be inconvenient for some users.
Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the 5 Core Karaoke Singing Wired Mic. Its combination of performance, durability, and versatility make it an excellent choice for any singer or performer looking to enhance their live performances. If you're in the market for a reliable microphone that won't let you down, I highly recommend giving this one a try!

Important Features of Cardioid Microphones

Cardioid microphones are an essential tool for any recording setup, both in professional and home-studio environments. These microphones offer a directional pickup pattern, primarily capturing sound waves originating directly in front of the microphone while minimizing off-axis sound. This feature makes cardioid microphones particularly useful for reducing unwanted noise and echoes. Here are some important features to consider when looking for a cardioid microphone:
  • Polar Pattern: Ensure that the microphone has a cardioid (also known as unidirectional) polar pattern. This ensures that it primarily picks up sound waves coming directly from the front and minimizes sound from the rear and sides, helping minimize background noise.
  • Sensitivity: Look for a microphone with a high sensitivity rating, as this indicates that it can reproduce quieter sounds more accurately, making it ideal for capturing subtle musical nuances or spoken words.
  • Frequency Response: A wide frequency response range will ensure that the microphone can accurately record a variety of instruments and vocal ranges, providing a balanced sound across different frequencies.
  • Self-Noise: The lower the self-noise rating, the less noise the microphone will introduce during recording, contributing to a cleaner overall sound quality.

Considerations for Choosing a Cardioid Microphone

When selecting a cardioid microphone, there are several factors you should consider to ensure that you get a microphone that meets your needs. These include:
  • Application: Determine the specific application you'll be using the microphone for. This could be voice-over work, live performances, studio recording, or podcasting. Different microphones may be better suited for specific applications, so choosing one that aligns with your intended use is crucial.
  • Budget: Set a budget for your microphone purchase, as prices can vary greatly. Make sure to prioritize features that are more essential to your needs while staying within your budget constraints.
  • Brand Reputation: Research the brand and choose a company with a history of manufacturing high-quality microphones. This will help ensure that you invest in a reliable product that holds up well over time.
  • Accessories: Consider whether any additional accessories like stands, mounts, or pop filters are necessary for your setup. Some microphones may include these accessories while others require separate purchases.

General Advice for Using Cardioid Microphones

To make the most of your cardioid microphone, consider the following advice:
  • Proper Placement: Position yourself at an appropriate distance from the microphone, typically between 6 and 12 inches away. This ensures that the microphone effectively captures the desired sound waves while minimizing background noise or plosives.
  • Avoid Sibilance: Proper microphone technique is essential to prevent sibilance, which can become evident during recording. Make sure to angle the microphone away from the direct line of the spoken word, and use a pop filter if necessary to further minimize sibilance.
  • Reduce Handling Noise: Invest in a high-quality shockmount or boom arm to reduce handling noise while recording in a home studio setup, or implement good microphone handling techniques when using a handheld microphone during live performances.

FAQ

  1. What is a cardioid microphone?
A cardioid microphone is a type of directional microphone that primarily captures sound from its front while minimizing noise from the sides and rear. Its name "cardioid" refers to the heart-shaped audio pickup pattern. These microphones are commonly used in stages, radio stations, and video recordings to capture voices or musical instruments accurately and with minimal background noise.
  1. How do cardioid microphones work?
Cardioid microphones work by having a diaphragm designed to respond more sensitively to sound waves coming from directly in front and less to those coming from the sides or back. This design enables these microphones to isolate the desired sound source and minimize the collection of unwanted noise, thus improving the overall audio quality.
  1. What are some common applications of cardioid microphones?
Cardioid microphones are commonly used in live performances, interviews, podcasts, and video recordings. They are ideal for capturing voices and musical instruments with high precision and minimum background noise. Examples of their applications include on-stage performances, radio interviews, and YouTube vlogs.
  1. How do cardioid microphones compare with other polar patterns?
Cardioid microphones have a heart-shaped pickup pattern that focuses on capturing sound from the front and minimizes noise from the sides and rear. Other polar patterns include omnidirectional (picking up sound from all directions), figure-eight (equal sensitivity to sound from front and back, less from sides), and supercardioid/hypercardioid (narrow frontal pickup and high rejection of side noise).
  1. Which are some popular manufacturers of cardioid microphones?
Some popular manufacturers of cardioid microphones include Rode, Shure, Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, and Blue Microphones. Each brand offers a variety of cardioid microphones, with different features and price points, to cater to various user requirements and budgets.

2024.05.19 11:00 Ashamed-Math-2092 Quirk: Fictional Character Copying.

Basically, Midoriya has this very weird form of power copying. Essentially, Midoriya can pick any fictional character that has a straight forward, less complex powerset. For example, he picks Superman. He now has to maintain the idea of "Superman" with his quirk in order for this to work. (That's him using his quirk already technically). Next, he basically has to seek out quirks that could be fit into a Superman shaped mold technically.
So a strength quirk of some kind, some kind of heat/laser quirk, a flight quirk, an ice quirk, etc. He basically has to touch people with these quirks, so he can store them. He can't use any of the quirks he's stored. They don't have to be exact 1-1 fits, they only need a vague resemblance. So for instance, here Midoriya would have to seek out people like Sato, Todoroki maybe, Aoyama perhaps, or Captain Celebrity.
He doesn't have to cover every minor power that showed up in one comic issue, or a throwaway ability that was forgotten by the author. Just has to be close enough. Eventually, if the quirk deems he's gathered enough, he can start the creation process and thus the quirk will spit out patchwork of different quirks Superman power set in this case. The quirks will be altered a bit to fit whichever character was shown, but they will still keep the same rough power level, and similar requirements.
For instance, if Sato was used here as the strength aspect, then Midoriya would have to eat sugar to maintain that. If Todoroki was used for heat vision here, they would be less laser like since the source was less concentrated, though Aoyama may have been thrown into the mix as well, so the colour taken might have a blue sheen. He can store several of the same type of quirk to get closer to the character's power level, but the more quirks he stores, the more tired he gets.
If Midoriya stores too powerful of a quirk, like Captain Celebrity's or All Might's, the copy he's stored will be nerfed down to whatever the power level was when the original owner was whatever Midoriya's current age is.
He can only have one character's power set at a time.

2024.05.19 10:53 ImCodeGreen Make use of previous owner setup and general first timer questions.

I'll be moving in to a new apartment and the living room has 4 bookshelf speakers mounted to the wall and all are nicely wired in the walls. I'm thinking of reusing them, or at least the wiring setup but wanted to gauge some opinions from you guys since I don't know much, and just started reading some posts here recently to learn a bit.
Here is a rough top-down view of the living room, with the following things to note:
I realize those speakers are pretty old, but maybe still usable? I'm going to be coming from literally just a 32" TV, so anything will be an upgrade. My main concern is the placement of them being so high (and if they're actually going to sound better than a modern TV).

Goals/expectations for the home theater setup:

Main questions:

  1. Are the Bose 161 and Onkyo SKM-100 usable for casual use - or just worth replacing in 2024?
  2. Is the height/placement of the Bose and Onkyo problematic? (wall mounted 7-8ft off the floor)
  3. What would be a decent center channel to "match" the existing speakers and recommended AVR?
At least for now, I'd prefer to spend less than $1k and try to preserve at least the speakewiring placement already in place. I was thinking of getting a 7.2ch Denon AVR, and plug the Onkyo rears into the surround ports (not surround back). I could also get a center channel, and a sub later down the line.

2024.05.19 10:52 jennithomas321 On-Page vs. Off-Page SEO: Different but Equally Important

What’s the Difference Between On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO?

On-page SEO focuses on optimizing parts of your website that are within your control, while off-page SEO focuses on increasing the authority of your domain through content creation and earning backlinks from other websites. To further understand the difference between the two, you have to understand, at a basic level, how search engine algorithms work. Let’s break it down.
There are two main buckets that search engines (SEO) look at when evaluating your site compared to other sites on the web.
  1. On-page SEO looks at what your site (or your page) is about
  2. Off-page SEO looks at how authoritative and popular your site is

On-Page vs. Off-Page SEO: What’s the Difference?

Put simply, what you rank for is largely determined by on-page factors, while how high you rank in the search results is largely determined by off-page factors.

How Does Each Type of SEO Affect Your Rankings?

What is On-Page SEO?

On-page SEO (also known as “on-site” SEO) is the act of optimizing different parts of your website that affect your search engine rankings. Where your website appears in search engine results pages is determined by a number of ranking factors including site accessibility, page speed, optimized content, keywords, title tags, etc. On-page SEO is about optimizing the stuff that you have control over and can change on your own website.

On-page SEO checklist:

How do you make sure your on-page SEO tactics are up to snuff? Here is a helpful checklist for on-site optimizations that can help curate your strategy.

Title Tags

Put your targeted keywords in the title tag of each page on your site. There are many best practices that go into writing an effective title tag.

Headings (H1)

Headings are usually the largest words on the page, and for that reason, search engines give them a little more weight than your other page copy. It is a good idea to work your target keywords into the headings of each web page but make sure you accurately reflect your page’s great content.
Make sure your H1s limited to one per page, all other headers are H2 or H3

URL structure

Put keywords into your URLs if possible. However, do not go changing all of your current URLs just so they have keywords in them. You shouldn’t change old URLs unless you plan on redirecting your old ones to your new ones. Consult a professional before doing this.

Alt text for images

Any content management system should allow you to add something called “alt text” to all images on your website. This text isn’t visible to the average visitor – alt text is in fact used by screen reader software to help blind internet users understand the content of your images. Search engines crawl images in a similar way, so inserting some relevant keywords while accurately describing the image will help search engines understand your page’s content.
Writing an alt attribute for each image keeps your website in compliance with WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). Keep the following things in mind when writing alt text:

Fast-loading pages, or page load speed

Google wants to help its users find what they’re looking for as quickly as possible to provide the best user experience. Therefore, optimizing your pages to load faster helps your site rank higher in the search results.
Google has a tool called PageSpeed Insights that will analyze your site on both mobile and desktop. and then suggest tips to optimize page speed. There are also several quick fixes to eliminate whatever is bogging your site down and slowing your page load time. Key site speed factors to consider:

Mobile Friendliness

In recent years, Google has prioritized mobile page loading speed as a key ranking metric.
How do you know if your website is mobile-friendly? Unfortunately, Google recently dropped support for some free public tools that helped. However, you can now use Google Search Console to analyze this type of information. Specifically, the Core Web Vitals report can help you identify if your mobile pages are loading slower than they should be.

Page Content

The content on your pages needs to be useful to people. If they search for something too specific to find your page, they need to be able to find what they’re looking for. It needs to be easy to read and provide value to the end user. Google has various ways to measure if your content is useful.

Internal Linking

Linking internally to other pages on your website is useful to visitors and it is also useful to search engines. Here’s an internal link to another blog post on our site that talks more about internal linking. Very meta.
When adding internal links, make sure to have relevant anchor text. Anchor text is the clickable text in a hyperlink (usually indicated by blue font color and underline). To optimize your anchor text, make sure the selected word or phrase is relevant to the page you’re linking to.
On-page SEO ensures that your site can be read by both potential customers and search engine robots. With good on-page SEO, search engines can easily index your web pages, understand what your site is about, and easily navigate the structure and content of your website, thus ranking your site accordingly. As a best practice, make sure your page content includes 1-3 relevant internal links.

Schema Markup

Adding structured data helps Google better understand the content of a page. Google also uses certain types of structured data to display “rich results” in SERPs such as a recipe with start ratings or step-by-step instructions with an image carousel. These rich results often appear at or near the top of SERPs and generally have higher click-through-rates than normal organic listings.
Google prefers structured data to use schema.org vocabulary, and recommends using JSON-LD format. They also provide a handy Rich Results Test tool to check your code. While there are a variety of ways to add structured data to your website (plugins, Google Tag Manager, etc.), it’s always best to get a professional involved if you’re not comfortable writing code.
Check out Google’s guide to structured data and rich results here.

Social Tags

Having your content shared on social tells Google that people find your content relevant, helpful and reputable. Not every page on your site is share-worthy, but you can optimize the pages that are with these tips:

Core Web Vitals

User experience is key to a website’s long-term success. In spring 2020, Google unveiled Core Web Vitals, a common set of signals that they deem “critical” to all users’ web experiences.
The purpose of these signals is to quantify the user experience with a website, from page visual stability and load time, to interactive experiences.
To check your LCP score, access your Google PageSpeed Insights and make sure your page hits LCP within 2.5 seconds. To accomplish this, remove unnecessary third-party scripts that may be running, upgrading your web host, activating “lazy loading” so page elements load only as users scroll down the page, and remove any large page elements that may be slowing it down.
One of the simplest ways to optimize cumulative layout shift is to add height and width dimensions to each new site element. Also, avoid adding new content above existing content on a page (unless responding to user interaction).

Page Experience

Google is working on a new ranking signal (likely to come out in 2024) that prioritizes websites with positive user experiences.
The ‘page experience signal’ will consist of Core Web Vitals, plus mobile-friendliness, safe-browsing, HTTPS security, and intrusive interstitial guidelines.
According to Google, “optimizing for these factors makes the web more delightful for users across all web browsers and surfaces, and helps sites evolve towards user expectations on mobile. We believe this will contribute to business success on the web as users grow more engaged and can transact with less friction.”

What is Off-Page SEO?

Off-page SEO focuses on increasing the authority of your domain through the act of getting links from other websites.
A good analogy for how authority works is this. If you have a bathtub with rubber duckies in it (the ducks are your pages), and you start filling the tub with water (links), your duckies are all going to rise to the top.
This is how a site like Wikipedia ranks for pretty much everything under the sun. It has so much water in its bathtub that if you throw another rubber duck in it, it’s going to float to the top without any other effort.
There’s a score called “Domain Authority” that calculates how authoritative your website is compared to other sites. You can type your domain name into here to see your score.

How to optimize for off-page SEO

There are several factors that influence your off-page SEO rankings. While each one is tackled with different strategies, they share an overarching goal of building the trust and reputation of your website from the outside.
  1. Inbound links
  2. Social media marketing
  3. Guest blogging and guest posting
  4. Unlinked brand mentions
  5. Influencer marketing
The biggest off-page SEO factor is the number and quality of backlinks to your website. Some examples of ways you can build links to your website are:
While link quantity is still important, content creators and SEO professionals are realizing that link quality is now more important than link quantity. As such, creating shareable content is the first step to earning valuable links and improving your off-page SEO.
How many links do you need for good off-page SEO? That is a tough question and it’s going to be based on the domain authority of your competitors, as you want to make sure you’re playing in the same sandbox.
SEOs also used to believe that buying links was a valid way of link building; however, Google will now penalize you for buying links in an attempt to manipulate page rank. You can also be penalized for submitting your links to link directories whose sole purpose is to increase your domain authority. Again, quality wins out over quantity when it comes to link building.

Is On-Page or Off-Page SEO More Important?

It’s not about choosing between on and off-page SEO, that would be like having to choose between a foundation or a roof for your house. On-page and off-page SEO work together to improve your search engine rankings in a complementary fashion.
However, SEOs generally advise getting your on-page SEO ducks in a row before focusing too much on off-page SEO.
Just like building a house, you want to set the foundation first before building the rest of the house. Like a foundation, you may need to come back and do some maintenance to your on-page SEO from time to time. Balancing the two will help make your website “bilingual” so that your users can understand it as well as the search engine robots- and that’s how your rankings start to improve.

2024.05.19 10:09 GivingUp86 Why do we have good feelings when we see beautiful landscapes?

Some activities, related to survival and reproduction, trigger dopamine release in our brain (eating, intercourse etc.). Why seeing a beautiful natural landscape triggers dopamin release and good feelings? Is it because we associate positive impressions to it like that natural landscape could generate more food, like there is no danger (for example predators) etc. or because its colours and image simply helps relaxation (like for example green and light blue colours)?

2024.05.19 09:59 createdjustforthis23 19/05/2024

I slept fine, I didn’t fall asleep so nicely. I don’t know why, I felt perfectly adequate all evening and then bam I cry myself to sleep. I don’t know how or why, and I didn’t even cry over anything in particular it was just any and everything. And I just kept crying and crying, like a baby. I had to switch pillows twice because I drenched it, but I got to sleep on my favourite pillow by the time I was almost asleep thankfully. I can be so picky with pillows, another thing mum tends to call me, even to this day - the princess and the pea. Or rather she likens me to her… I can’t entirely say I disagree tbh. I just like things a particular way, not all things, I can be relaxed about plenty, but there are some things I just to be just so. My pillows when I sleep for example, how the dishwasher top rack is stacked etc. Entirely inconsequential things really. But anyway. I didn’t fall asleep so nicely. I woke up feeling better, still a bit sad but nothing I couldn’t ignore.
It’s now 12:58pm and I’ve done next to nothing. I’ve been watching BT, I’m not writing the name of the show because I feel like that might be search heavy at the moment? So I’ve been watching that, I’m midway through the third episode now and there are four out so far. I’ve also painted some of my lil clay things with primer. And that’s about it. I really need to clean and tidy my room but the idea of it… ugh. I don’t want to :(
I’m loving BT so much. I like the stories and characters and stuff, but I mostly love the sets and costumes. They’re just so luxuriously opulent and uggghhhhhhh I want to just stare it all. Sometimes I wish they would clear out the cast and just give us a tour of the rooms and show all the details of the gowns. But like I learned in therapy, beauty is something I value highly, not in a vain way but in the way I utterly adore beautiful things whether it be a stunningly ornate wallpaper, a sparkly bead encrusted gown or even a leaf that is the perfect shade of green. I just love it all and it brings me so much joy, more than I realised now that I’m conscious of this value of mine. But the BT house itself, particularly the drawing room ommmmgggg. The blue? I think it’s called wedgewood blue from memory, with the creamy/white detailing. And all the light streaming through. It’s so dreamy. And it makes me love my blue and white bedroom more. And the gowns!!!!!!! I wish I could roll around in them, they’re so sparkly and detailed and beyond beautiful. Particularly the ones crusted in beading and with the luxurious silks and satins and velvets and taffetas and organza and all of it. And the colours! It’s all so dreamy. I don’t overly love the style of a lot of the gowns, that sort of empire line, mainly because it only looks good on women with fewer curves and a flatter chest, they can look gorrrrrrrgeous in them. But otherwise if you have any kind of cleavage it looks so weird and bleh. I love Penelope so much, she’s always been a favourite character and she honestly deserves the very best. And Colin definitely got a glow up prior to this season. His brown coat is so delicious. I’m beginning to wonder if I should read the series…? I do love a lil historical romance. Anyway I don’t even Penelope and Colin to end up together, I mean Lord Debling is so lovely and Colin is off sleeping with hookers… like? Then again I know I am wrong in how I think and feel about all of this. I know I have expectations ghat are unfair, I mean maybe not for everyone but if I’m nothing special and therefore not enough then can I criticise. This doesn’t make sense. Anyway. Actually nevermind I just watched the fourth episode and I am very much Team Colin. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEH!!!!!!!! But now I have to wait for part two in mid June :(
I’m going to the office tomorrow. I don’t want to. But oh well. I’m going to make a concerted effort to get back in twice a week - I’ve been slack with it and it doesn’t help me become better. Leaving the house more is important, so this shall be one of the ways. I’m also going to get some new sneakers and a walking jacket so I can go for walks more regularly. I’d like to go several times a week, but I’ll work up to that. I love my walks, I love them a lot but I just get filled with every negative emotion when I go for them around my house, to the point I’ll start having tears running down my cheeks or shaky trembly hands - it’s pathetic. I think environment is everything, and purpose. When I walk pups at my parents I don’t feel these things, I’ll be a little anxy but nothing I can’t manage. But here? It’s so hard. It’s so stupid I know. But I love walking, I feel better when I do it regularly, so I shall keep forcing myself to do it until I feel okay about it. I know this is what I have to do, but the way it makes me feel inside… it never feels worth it. To be 20 minutes walk from home and feel on the verge of a panic attack is NOT a good feeling and it only makes my panic worsen. So baby steps. I’ve been considering on and off moving to a different area, I think I would feel more comfortable in other areas, I don’t know why I don’t here but I don’t. But moving elsewhere is no different to running from problems so I will sort it out here.
I broke his little bowl. I didn’t mean to :( I feel kind of upset about it, it’s been two weeks in the making with time to shape, dry, prime and I was doing a final layer of primer pre paint and my stupid finger went through the base. So I guess it would never have been a good present anyway because it broke so easily. But I bought a really pretty coloured paint because I thought he might like it and I just feel upset. I showed him it, idk why, I just messaged him a picture of it now and I already wish I hadn’t. I shouldn’t have even made anything for him in the first place, he’s made it abundantly clear he doesn’t care for homemade things - cards, presents, whatever. If he did like them he would comment on them, and he never does, so maybe it’s a good thing this broke. I just like sharing things with him, like when I draw and I like a tree I’ve drawn I want to show him, except I don’t because I’m utterly rubbish at drawing and it makes me look like a five year old. I at least appreciate his honesty, or transparency rather. It means I can understand what he does and doesn’t like. I just think his likes don’t mesh with my like of making homemade cards and presents. It’s not like I only give him that though. Anyway it doesn’t matter, plus it’s probably better for me to not share things like this given I don’t have any skill or natural talent with it. Just because you enjoy something doesn’t make you good at it.
I don’t feel so great this afternoon, mood wise.
I’ve done the absolute bare minimum with my room, and the bar was set very, very low today. I tidied the floor up a bit, I made my bed, did a lazy tidy of my vanity desk thing.. that’s about it. I’ll do more across the week.
I feel.. detached today. This afternoon, rather. I know I love my family, Andy, puppy… etc. I just can’t feel it. I know it’s all in there, but I feel detached and I can’t reach it. This isn’t unusual, I just always try to describe the feeling and always fail. I think knowing I care but not being able to feel myself care sums it up as well as I’ll ever be able to.
I found a little notebook of my early days of therapy, well with this current one, maybe not that early actually but idk. It was just me writing down who I am. The first is “I am a human” because I had to start with the basics. The last line is “I try my best to be friendly” - I think I will continue with this. No one really comments much on me so I will just write it as things feel write. From memory it was also a way to force myself to speak more kindly to myself, ie I am a woman vs I am a monster. And things like I’m generous, I love animals, I am quiet, I try to be patient, I love romance, I appreciate attention to detail, I like to care for others, I am a homebody, I love reading etc. And then scattered amongst it was some honesty, like I can be a control freak, I am quite particular about some things, I am indecisive, I am sensitive etc. And then next to I am a friend I have a question mark. But I want to continue writing these things, I think it’s helpful when I feel lost in myself to be able to read through a list of things I’ve written and be reminded. That sounds so silly to not know who you are sometimes, but sometimes I just feel so unbelievably lost and unmoored from everything, even myself. So I’ll write all the good things, and the bad. I’ll write things that I like, things that I don’t. I’ll write things I want in my life, things I feel like I should want but don’t, things I shouldn’t want but do etc etc etc. It’ll be a little tiny notebook of everything me. I wonder if sometimes it’s possible for me to get any lamer? Unlikely.
I’ve been thinking about stopping journaling here more and more. I get more out of posting it here, it feels like a release, like I’m letting all the thoughts go which is especially helpful with my negative ones, I don’t know.
It’s 5:23pm. I need to wash and blowdry my hair, as it’s still damp in the morning lately. I need to have something for dinner, I guess. I’ve been struggling with eating lately, I feel so ugly and it makes me not want to eat and then that sets off a bad string of things. I’ll have something little, vegemite toast maybe. I need to pack my bag for tomorrow. And that’s it.
I feel better after a shower and chat with Andy, I still feel not good but he perked me up on the outside. He makes me laugh so much :) It’s kind of weird to think I’ll be living long term in Australia, like I’ve always intended on living there - until my mental health and covid messed things up a little for me timeline wise. But to think I’ll maybe say Australian things…? That I’ll say thongs? And I definitely will because I cave quickly, like I was only in the UK two years and I said crisps and trainers and I still do to this day, which I’m actively trying to stop. I wonder what my accent would sound like after like ten years… I really doubt I’d ever lose my accent. It’s funny how I do probably sound a bit different when talking to him versus my mum. I just talk more softly with him, I naturally do anyway to the point I have people comment semi regularly on how soft spoken I am, but idk, I don’t even mean to speak to him a certain way, I just do? And then he hears me talking to mum and I probably sound like I’m wearing Jandals and stubbies while loading up the ute as I prepare for a tramp in the bush. Christ. I do love being from here though, in theory I would rather we live here than Australia, and never say never… but it makes more sense to be there. I don’t really have anyone here other than my parents whereas he has family and friends and his payments and all of it. I don’t really have any ties here. Anyway.
I get to spend time with him tonight :) Night night

2024.05.19 09:55 AudibleDruid Regex components are awesome

Regex components are awesome
I made a simple command line interface for a terminal using regex components. Only 2 commands at the moment but it's easily expandable.
Each command can have any number of arguments, both just happen to have 4 here.
Any suggestions for me to improve? What do you use regex components for?

2024.05.19 09:51 Alioliou Thaumical precious metal alloys in my world

Thaumical precious metal alloys in my world
My world of fantastic science fiction is based on the real world, but with the addition of magic and thaumaturgy as an additional powerful branch of arts and techniques.
The historical course of my world is similar to the historical course of the real world, but there are sciences derived from magic. Runic engineering studies the interaction of glyphic circuits and geometric shapes imbued with magic with reality. Thaumaturgy and the science of aspects study the converging aspects of matter and its manipulation to obtain new materials and artifacts without classical chemical formulas. Arcanology studies the functioning and principles of so-called spells, incantations, and enchantments. Etcetera.
Science predominates overall, and while it has taken some time, it has swallowed magic, at least partially. There are still many things unknown about the functioning of magic. There are many things that work and have been obtained through trial and error, but whose intrinsic mechanisms are unknown. There are hypotheses derived from quantum physics, of course, but unconfirmed, or impossible to confirm.
But that's not the point.
In my world, just like in the real world, metallurgy has played a very important role. Without metallurgy, we wouldn't have weapons, machines, computing, electricity... we wouldn't have many things. Without metallurgy, they wouldn't have them either, and they wouldn't have thaumaturgy or many enchanted objects they employ.
Within the vast domain of thaumic metallurgy, the most prominent metals are undoubtedly the precious metals: copper, silver, and gold. Throughout the history of my world, these three metals have held an undisputed position of relevance in thaumaturgy. While iron and mercury have also been employed in thaumaturgic practice (the Thaumonomicon, one of the oldest works on thaumaturgy known, mentions thaumium and alchemical brass, two magical metals derived from iron), copper, silver, and gold have demonstrated unparalleled enchantability and magical versatility.
These precious metals have not only been used in the creation of magical objects throughout history but have also been the subject of numerous alchemical experiments in transmutation and aspectual manipulation, although most of these attempts have been largely unsuccessful and have sometimes led to unintended consequences.
In recent times, there has been a growing interest in the use of other precious metals such as platinum, rhodium, and osmium in thaumaturgy. However, this interest is still in its nascent and limited stage compared to the study and practice related to copper, silver, and gold. Thaumaturgy related to these less conventional metals is still to be fully developed, and their magical potential is far from fully understood.

The three main precious metals of interest

Copper has been a frontline choice in creating alloys that function as conductors and catalysts of magic throughout the ages, thanks to its impressive capacity to be enchanted. Furthermore, it stands out for its resistance to aspectual essences and its ability to act as an effective aspectual insulator. Even in ancient times, bronze armor decorated with primitive runes and magical glyphs not only rivaled but surpassed the resilience and tenacity of the finest steel armor of the later medieval period.
Today, this metal remains relevant in the creation of alloys such as molybdocopper, orichalcum, hepatizon, and manganin, which are used in the manufacturing of special munitions. These bullets, engraved with specific enchantments, acquire attributes and particular effects that make them highly effective in a wide variety of situations. The versatility of copper as a magical material makes it a valuable and sought-after option for practitioners of magic and thaumaturgy worldwide.
Silver, on the other hand, also stands out for its capacity to store magic. It has been employed in various ways in the realm of thaumaturgy and magic. One of its most prominent applications is its use in coating weapons and armor made of steel. Silver can be fused with this material to enhance the enchantments present in the weapons and armor, or even to directly manufacture weapons and armor imbued with its own magical properties.
Furthermore, silver has traditionally been associated with protection against supernatural entities and has been used to create a wide variety of protective amulets and talismans. Its teratocidal properties make it an essential component in the manufacturing of specialized weapons and ammunition designed for the hunting and elimination of creatures such as therianthropes, demons, and other supernatural beings. The famous silver bullets are an iconic example of this type of ammunition, known for their effectiveness in confrontations against beings of malign or magical nature. Silver, with its versatility and magical power, has earned a prominent place in the arsenal of magic practitioners and thaumaturges worldwide.
Gold, on the other hand, stands out as one of the most suitable metals for enchantment and magic absorption. Despite these qualities, its use in thaumaturgy has been limited due to its scarcity, high value, and the difficulty in stabilizing its magical properties. Creating enchanted objects from gold requires highly advanced and stabilized infusion altars, or the use of very specific alloys that can enhance its magical manipulation.
Despite these limitations, various gold alloys have sparked special interest among thaumaturges and alchemists worldwide. Below, we will detail some of these alloys, exploring their unique characteristics and potential applications in the field of magic and thaumaturgy.
Copper, silver and gold...

Tychereal gold

Tychereal gold encompasses a set of gold alloys that possess the unique property of influencing the luck of the bearer. This capability is achieved through the infusion of the "probabilitas" aspect into the alloys or through the inscription of specific enchantments. However, it is important to note that the effect on the bearer's luck is subtle.
In certain regions of Central, Southern, and Eastern Asia, red gold alloys, which contain a high copper content, are employed for this purpose because culturally, the color red is believed to bring good luck in these areas. These alloys, when enchanted or infused with "probabilitas," appear to have a greater impact on the bearer's luck, although their effect is temporary and tends to fade over time. Additionally, these alloys are prone to mild oxidation and corrosion, leading to the loss of their desired tychereal property.
However, the most effective tychereal alloy is known as "leprechaun gold," invented in Ireland during the Middle Ages. Leprechaun gold is a lime-green-toned alloy, primarily composed of gold with additions of silver and tin, along with traces of cadmium, and with high amounts of "probabilitas" aspect. Although scientific trials have shown that this alloy has a significant and generally positive impact on the bearer's luck, it presents a serious contraindication: cadmium, a heavy metal known to be toxic and carcinogenic.

Royal thaumium

Royal thaumium, a distinguished and valuable alloy, differs from common thaumium, ancient thaumium or, simply, thaumium (an amalgam of wrought iron impregnated with praecantatio). This exceptional compound is a combination of gold and aluminum impregnated with praecantatio.
By fusing gold with aluminum in an approximate mass ratio of 79:21, purple gold is obtained, a brittle intermetallic compound with an intense magenta color. When this purple gold is impregnated with large amounts of praecantatio, it becomes royal thaumium.
The term "royal" in its name is attributed to its high production cost and its original association with royalty and divinity. Although it shares similarities in appearance and qualities with thaumium based on iron, the properties of royal thaumium are even more pronounced. It can store approximately 53 times more magic than iron-based thaumium, acts as an extremely impermeable aspectual insulator to essences, and possesses a tremendous enchanting capacity. However, it is important to note that royal thaumium is extremely fragile compared to its iron-based counterpart.
Royal thaumium was initially discovered and crafted by alchemists in the late 18th century when the first samples of aluminum were successfully extracted, which at that time were considerably more expensive than gold due to the difficulty of obtaining it. During the early to mid-19th century, this alloy was widely used in the manufacturing of cores for high-power magic wands. Although it has been replaced by more economical thaumic materials today, royal thaumium is still appreciated in certain classic magic circles, acquired by purists and collectors of magical objects.

Aurallium

Within the realm of modern metallurgy, quasicrystals have emerged as structural forms that, unlike conventional crystals, are ordered but not periodic. Most quasicrystals discovered to date are metallic and exhibit symmetries that defy traditional crystalline conventions, such as decagonal and icosahedral shapes.
These quasicrystals are particularly intriguing in the field of thaumaturgy due to their ability to harbor large densities of a degenerate form of the "ordor" aspect, known as "auratio."
Among the most relevant quasicrystals in thaumaturgy are dodecaedrites, quasicrystalline alloys generally composed of aluminum or rare earth metals, infused with huge amounts of praecantatio. These dodecaedrites have the capacity to store massive amounts of magic, surpassing conventional thaumic alloys by thousands of times, making them ideal for the manufacturing of high-powered magical objects and disruptive antimagic munitions.
The term "aurallium" refers to a group of dodecaedrite-based alloys of gold quasicrystals, such as the gold-gallium-terbium alloy AC and other alloys M,X)85.7RE14.3 (M = Ag, Au, X = Al, Ga, In, RE = Er, Lu). However, the most notable of these alloys is "pure aurallium," composed of pure gold impregnated with large amounts of "auratio" aspect essence. This material forms dodecahedral, icosahedral, and tricontahedral crystals of a pale orangish-golden hue with celestial blue highlights.
Pure aurallium is metastable, meaning its quasicrystalline structure can collapse under certain extreme conditions to form amorphous gold, releasing energy and magic in the process. Additionally, this alloy has the ability to induce ordering and crystallization of surrounding materials when magic is applied to it, which could be utilized for various purposes, such as manufacturing enhaced wand cores for specific spells, or negentropic weapons like the "ordor ray."
Aurallium icosahedral quasicrystal.
Nuclear tests conducted by North Korea using this material, whose documentation has been obtained and released by the espionage forces of Acheron (an organization tasked with containing and eliminating supernatural threats), yield terrifying results. Atomic weapons doped with big amounts of aurallium generates negentropic fields that destroy all organic tissue within a radius several times larger than the blast radius and the lethal neutron radius. Animal and plant tissues liquefy and reorganize into perfectly ordered crystals of amino acids, phosphates, and carbohydrates imbued with high-purity aspect essences that may continue reacting dangerously with the environment, potentially producing flux, taint seeds and void gaps. All exposed rock and metal recrystallize into large amalgams of pure single crystals of various pure materials, forming ordered giant minimalist structures. And exposed water is aetheralized into pure aqua aspect that permeates and destructively alters any exposed material.
Surprisingly, despite the high thaumaturgy and technology involved in the production of pure aurallium and aurallium alloys, traces of aurallium have been found in well-preserved ancient legendary artifacts of high power, although the origin of such traces of aurallium is likely accidental or non-conciouss, this explains some of the astonishing qualities of these arcane artifacts.
