FL Studio running with Wine lagging when right clicking and dragging and drop.
Hi, I have a problem with my newly fresh FL Studio 21 installation running on Wine (wine 9.8 staging, winetricks 20240105, latest Garuda Linux OS (Arch based distro)).
The app works very well, but it starts going very slow when I drag and drop any item or use the right click options, and when that happens, I have to wait like 30 seconds for it to get back to normal and keep editing, but this is so bothering that I can't use drag and drop and right click options, this is so important and I don't know why that happens.

Could be so helpful if any of you have used FL Studio with Linux and has solved this problem.

2024.04.30 17:19 BroasisMusic Clean OS install tomorrow. Any way to save my tags and places?

I'm doing a fresh install of Windows 10 tomorrow, but I've spent months tagging samples and instruments and plugins in different favorites groups, and also have a decent amount of locations in my 'places' menu.
All of my midi, projects, sample packs and the Ableton library and expansions are on an external drive which is not changing, so the location of these files will not be altered.
Is there a preferences file or some other database / library file that I can backup to keep all my favorites tags once I fresh install and put Ableton on the new machine? I care less about what's under 'places' as that would be much simpler to recreate. But I've spent many hours digging through my samples to tag the ones I've tagged and would hate to lose that.
How can I make this process as easy as possible?

2024.04.29 01:08 arcco96 Using midi to learn instruments

Hi,
Grew up playing guitar with jam man stomp box. Just found arturia microfreak and antistatic bracelet association along with doepfer dark energy learn button... Realizing you could use midi mapping and rerecording to automate accompaniment.... Likely how all my musician friends learned to play. Is it literally a personal file? Is there a way to tune your instincts to a midi code doped audio signal such that you just need to plug in the instrument into a box... Siding on the reality that instruments are likely too hard to learn manually. Before I rig up virtual synth training ground could anyone help me figure out how the pros practice? Machine learning experience and recent synthe exposure really making this one feel unfair. Please help me retain the benefits of my practice! Is there a database of musician maps how about song performance profiles so I can learn to jam? More importantly can this be extended to all audio (polygloticity with increasing returns)... Even linguistics (autocorrecting self developing code)... Hoping to harmonize

2024.04.18 15:31 DoGsPaWsLoVe Wednesday 04/17/24: 15 Posts

Wednesday 04/17/24: 15 Posts
Here is a recap of the 15 monetized posts from Kylea G Weight loss Journey.
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with WW nor a mental health professional. These opinions are my own based on social media content, medical sources, and internet searches used primarily to estimate/locate prices on purchases. I wish no harm to Kylea or Joseph "Joe" Gomez.
⚠️ Trigger Warning: Addiction, Compulsive Buying Disorder, Death, Disordered Eating, Grief, Pregnancy Loss, and Religion will be discussed.
PubMed (National Medical Literature Database):
Compulsive Buying Disorder https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1805733/#:~:text=Compulsive%20buying%20disorder%20(CBD)%20is,in%20the%20US%20general%20population.
The theme of the monetized content was shopping.
  1. Her body needed rest. She is wearing a "Coors" t-shirt.
  2. ⚠️ Death/Grief New Ring Part 4 - To justify her purchase of jewelery (again) to honor her deceased grandmother, she added the detail that she looked at the ring 1 week prior to make sure it was "the one". (Of note, she will not wear or resize her wedding ring.)
  3. ⚠️ Death/Grief New Ring Part 5 - She clarifies the style of ring she chose to honor her deceased grandmother. (Do you think it is right that she has been paid to post about a new ring 5 times in approx. 24 hours on a weight loss page?)
  4. ⚠️ Disordered Eating aka Milk & Honey Breakfast stop - The only food or beverage posted for the day was scrambled eggs, fresh fruit and coffee.
--Point #1: This is a weight loss page. Kylea claims to have used WW her entire journey.
--Point #2: Based on her chosen content, she consumed 1-2 WW points for the entire day (a Premier Protein Shake) out of approx. 23 WW points.
--Point #3: This is extremely dangerous messaging for followers looking to her for inspiration, information, and guidance.
--Point #4: I have shown through 1.5 weeks of recaps she does not provide source(s) to back her viewpoint on nutrition or health (not even WW if they have questions), offers no resources, and speaks harshly/blocks those that question her.
  1. Joe got a haircut and beard trim - Why is this relevant monetized content to a weightloss page titled "Kylea G" not "Kylea and Joe"?
  2. Sixstar Froot Loops Protein Shake - Joe purchased a case of 15 for Kylea to try once home.
  3. "I wanted one more dress for vacay" - The 1st image shows 21 dresses +/- 1 or 2 (possibility of returns/exchanges) that Kylea claims were for the upcoming cruise next week. The number of dresses exceeds the quantity needed for the trip.
--Point #1: Please read the "Clinical Symptoms" section of the link above on Compulsive Buying Disorder (CBD) aka shopping addiction, and keep it in mind these next few post recaps.
  1. Dress Justification- "That girl worked hard to be where she's at. So as long as it's within reason, I'm getting her whatever dress she'd Ike for the rest of my life."
  2. Michael Kors Part 1 - Kylea states she had a "girl you deserve it moment" and "now I must drive my car far away from the mall."
--Point #1: In comments, Kylea admitted she sat and spent 2 hours thinking about the purse/wallet before purchase. She justifies the purchases because they were on sale.
  1. Michael Kors Part 2: Justification - "I went into the Michael Kors store 3 times to look at this bag." She claims her other purse is stained from denim, she couldn't use this style previously due to her weight and states, "This isn't a splurge I make very often, if ever."
--Point #1: Per the PubMed article, Kylea displays signs of CBD.
--Point #2: The 2nd image with this post show the 7 dresses she used for monetized content but claims she didn't purchase. She shops daily, looks at items multiple times before purchase, and lashes out at followers post-purchase.
  1. Live Music - Kylea planned to see another artist that saved her life with their music. Kylea's love and passion for music are deep-rooted and meaningful. She is an aspiring singesongwriter and I wish her well in her career pursuits. Respectfully, it is hard to keep up with all the people that have saved her life.
  2. ⚠️ Generalizing Addiction - "It's hard to explain how just 2.5 years ago I almost lost my life due to addiction & how I stand here today as the most alive version of me that I've ever been."
--Point #1: It is dangerous to generalize addiction. I will not rehash my points yesterday questioning her mental and physical health.
--Point #2 Kylea frequently uses false timelines for monetary gain. Her life changed 07/05/21. 2.5 years ago was mid Oct 2021. Tell the truth about when events happened. I don't feel paid creators should earn income based in deceit.
  1. Spending Rant - "If you don't like how I spend my money and live my life, you don't have to follow my page. I'm not going to buy 10 more purses but if I wanted to that's my own business!"
--Point #1: Kylea chooses to not disclose that she is a paid content creator and/or offer a simple explanation to her followers that their likes/comments/views/shares earn her money.
--Point #2: Kylea chooses to use falsified timelines and details of tragedy to enhance engagement. Consider the emotional impact of these 2 statements (and variations of) she uses frequently:
Example 1: I lost my son last fall. 😢 Example 2: I lost my son last year due to medical neglect from a UTI that caused me to go into labor. (She never pursued the allegations of neglect legally.)
Now hethe truth: I experienced an early pregnancy loss 09/05/22.
I am not mocking or downplaying the stages of grief due to pregnancy loss. I have experienced it myself. I am sorry to Kylea and Joe for their loss.
  1. Michael Kors Part 3 - Reduced Sodium Tajin fits in her new purse.
  2. Bedtime - This is your reminder she is experiencing an endometriosis flare. She will return home tomorrow.
Takeout Purchase: Milk & Honey Breakfast= $17 est + tip
Purchase: Sixstar Froot Loop Protein Shakes= $26.24; Joe's Haircut and Beard Trim= $24 est.; A Lister Midi Dress= $14.99; Michael Kors Mercer Medium Pebbled Leather Crossbody Bag= $89; Michael Kors Medium Crossgrain Leather Wallet= $69; Airbnb room= $60/night + fees; Live Music= $30 est.
I strongly feel Kylea's health/weightloss content is minimal at best. In my opinion, the name of her Facebook page needs to change. Per 1.5 weeks of daily recaps, her content is a lifestyle page. I have shown patterns of dangerous and misleading content. I sincerely hope Facebook takes action.

2024.04.02 14:52 DazyCrude Drum & Bass Community Platform / Wiki

Hi all! Wanted to raise something here and ask for feedback and/or interest.
I am working to deploy a completely free, community driven online platform specifically for drum & bass production.
The idea for the platform is to eventually become a large database/knowledge base with master lists on where to find free and premium DAWs, hardware, MIDI packs, plugins, presets, production tutorials and sample packs - specifically related or useful to drum & bass production. These lists will be created based off all entries submitted by users, so over time it should grow to an extensive resource, both for free and premium material. All users will be able to comment on all entries and share their thoughts.
Alongside this, I will include a community section where users can connect, showcase their music, ask or give feedback, share tips & tricks and potentially start collaborations. I know that platforms like Discord and Telegram are widely used, but I dislike that they are too closed. I’ll use a modern and open source community platform, to hopefully engage users to interact and contribute.
It might take time before it gets proper engagement, so I am trying to decide if I should continue. Does this sound like a decent project to continue with? Would you consider joining and contributing?
Feel free to share feedback and ideas or questions, if any.
Thanks in advance.

2024.03.29 20:57 SROTDroid March 29th, 2024 - /r/Chiptunes: Who needs fancy instruments and production studios when you've got beeps and boops?

/Chiptunes

41,645 chipsters for 15 years!

You know what I love? Pirating shit. It's incredible. I get all these cool games and software and it doesn't even cost me anything! And some guy on /piracy posted a meme once saying it's always morally correct so I feel no sense of wrongdoing whatsoever with it!
But my favourite part isn't the free shit... Well I mean it is but for the purposes of this feature, it's the keygen software. For the uninformed, when you buy software it tends to require a license key, usually in the form of a serial code (or these days a constant online connection to a licensing server without which you can't use the software even if you did buy it because capitalism was a mistake). So Scene releases will have an executable in them that generates you a key and/or modified program files. It's pretty nifty stuff, and it's often accompanied with cool graphics and a particular Old Computer Program aesthetic. And there has been a tradition spanning many decades now that these keygens are loaded with just the most banging mod tracker chiptunes imaginable.
I'm not going to try and explain all the expansive history and details of tracker music, becuase 1. i aint know shit, and 2. There's an incredible, must-watch video documentary about it already that you should absolutely watch. It's a truly fascinating subculture that's been thriving for nearly 50 years of computer history. For anyone who saw my /edmproduction feature a few day's back (which I know i none of you because nobody reads the posts on this sub), you may have perhaps been intimidated by the complexity of it all. DAWs, synthesizers, MIDI devices, VSTs, it's too much, for both the brain and the wallet. But Chiptune ain't about that life, you only need a computer and some free software (my recommendation #notanad) and you're cruisin'.
Chiptune is, in my mind, the epitome of musical resourcefulness. It is a genre that does an awful lot with very little, and can use nothing but simple synth waves on old 80's hardware to create incredible pieces of music. It's simple enough conceptually to be accessible to anyone, but there's enough depth that people can create masterpieces out of those same tools. You have definitely heard Chiptune music before, it includes (perhaps retroactively) basically every piece of 8-bit and 16-bit music out there. Simple stuff like the Super Mario theme or Tetris theme that use the rudimentary NES sound chip, or really cool pieces like the Chrono Trigger or DK Country soundtracks with their fancy samples and MIDI-compatible hardware. Video games are certainly where Chiptune has made its most lasting impressions and even in modern games you'll still hear chiptune-inspired tracks frequently.

But it's not all video game OSTs and cracked software, no, there are many talented artists still keeping the art going strong. And if you're interested in delving into the world of Chiptune, as a listener or creator, /Chiptunes is the place to visit! It's filled with Chiptune enthusiasts and composers alike discussing the art form, recommending music and posting their own original chiptunes. While most chiptune artists these days are using PCs with emulated software, you still see some madmen running old hardware setups and other insane builds.
As with any good online subculture worth its salt, Chiptune as a culture isn't localised to one place on the web, but rather split across innumerable forums and independent websites that haven't been updated in decades and probably all hate eachother. Which is how the internet should be, really. There's nothing I hate more than discovering that the hub for discussion on some really cool niche hobby is a single opaque Discord server. Fuck I hate Discord. But I digress. From the simple tracker databases like modarchive.org to incomprehensable injoke-laden forums ripped straight from 2007 like my beloved BotB (never change), there's loads and loads to explore. And if you're looking to check this stuff out, I'd highly recommend going to /Chiptunes and exploring all the cool creations people have made over the years!
And just for fun, here are some of my favourite chiptune tracks:

2024.03.03 20:09 Arceist_Justin Bogus copyright claims by LatinAutorPerf, UNIAO BRASILEIRA DE EDITORAS DE MUSICA - UBEM, and LatinAutor - UMPG -- On original content! Please Help!

I have been uploading YouTube videos of my RPG Maker projects and despite the fact that the audio in the games is 100% original content, nearly every single one of my videos pertaining to this particular RPG that I have been working on has been claimed by LatinAutorPerf, UNIAO BRASILEIRA DE EDITORAS DE MUSICA - UBEM, and LatinAutor - UMPG
despite the fact that the audio in the video is 100% my creation. The audio tracks in my game are done by me in midi editors, DAWs, SF2 utilities, VSTi's, and Ableton Live.
The tracks that I am supposedly infringing on are NOT what they claim to be.
I have had mixed results with this. Sometimes they uphold the claim despite the fact that it is NOT theirs. Such as my "Flaming Flames Burn" track. Others, they do not respond at all and I win by default. It is very anxiety inducing to wait a month just to see what happens each time this occurs.
I even had public domain music get claimed. A Huge part of my game takes place in Argentina and I made the map music for Argentina, the Argentina National Anthem taken from a midi file. I mixed it with the Super Nintendo soundfont to make it sound like it is coming from an SNES. And it truly does sound like an SNES song, but this company claimed it despite the fact that national anthems ARE public domain. Now I have to wait until April 2nd so see if they uphold illegitimately or they ignore.
A Google search for the company brings up a lot of results dating as old as five years ago to a couple of months ago with people complaining about the fake claims from this company.
How can I go about making YouTube remove this company from their database? It seems that their claims are fake.
They seem to be picking on this game in particular as my other two projects rarely get claimed.
I am in the USA and in Michigan.

The title is a bit of a nightmare, but basically for the track I'm working on right now, I have the Hard-clip audio at 0db disabled, cause it removes the static and it has a nice effect. But whenever I render the project the effect goes away and the static returns. Is there a way to fix this?

Serum failed to load?
Just updated to the latest update of FL Studio 21. All of my other projects, Serum loads in just fine. But this particular project it doesn't. How do I fix it?
It kept saying at first THE DATA FOLDER DOESNT EXIST. IT MAY HAVE MOVED, something along those lines and gave me a few options.
And then Serum just fails to load but I can open a new serum channel and works fine, just not with the current serum channels.

Trying to use Linux as your main operating system is possible. After so many years of active development it has reached maturity. There are distributions for every user case, but where Linux shines, is in the stability of long-term support releases. A stable, robust system is always welcome. Daily tasks, like browsing the web, doing online work, streaming media, and editing office documents are some things that are so easy to do nowadays in Linux systems, that there is little to no difference with Windows or macOS.
However, there are some things that hold Linux distributions back from reaching greatness. Some of them make it really easy to transition from Windows or macOS. Familiar interfaces like the ones in Linux Mint, elementaryOS or Kubuntu are just perfection, and Ubuntu has been the standard Linux distribution for many years. The problem is not usability and ease of use, because, while there are many choices for command line enthusiasts, like Arch, Gentoo or LFS, the operating system has been made famous for beginner friendly approaches, like the ones mentioned before, or by SteamOS, by Valve, the gaming distribution that ships with the Steam Deck.

The problem: native Linux software

When users start with Linux, there is an adrenaline rush. It's something new, exciting, and shiny. By default, there is a software center for apps, but there is also the terminal. With a simple command, all apps can be installed, updated or removed. And it can do a lot of other things too. The desktop can be customized. Different icons, themes, colors, sounds and layouts can be applied without breaking the system. However, after updating the software, personalizing the desktop and installing a couple of apps, the magic is usually gone. Users are left with a system with very functional, but unfamiliar apps.
These apps are powerful, and most of them are really good alternatives to those made for Windows and macOS. Most of them are even there, for those systems too, just in case users want to learn to use them before transitioning to Linux, or in the case they want a free functional program without advertisements. Those programs, although very good, require learning again. If a designer was used to Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and Illustrator, it will be frustrating or annoying to find that those programs are not in Linux, and that they will have to learn how to use GIMP, Darktable and Inkscape instead, and start from the beginning.

Open Source alternatives
If the designer has work to do, and they have a deadline, they will probably just stay in Windows or macOS and finish their job with the programs mentioned before. Real work can be done in Linux, but it requires patience and the will to learn something new. About 98% of what can be done with Windows can also be done with Linux, but it's that 2% that matters for professionals.
Some of these open-source applications are perfect replacements for business software, as they would just do the work very similarly. Per example, a Microsoft Office user that relies on Word, Excel and PowerPoint will find that OnlyOffice Desktop Editors is perfect, and does not require any payments at all. But the Linux community usually recommends the much-loved LibreOffice, that has more tools, is older and has been the choice of many, but sadly, it is not as compatible with the Microsoft suite as OnlyOffice. In this one, documents can be exchanged in their native formats without messing up the layout.
But some other programs, even when they are heavily shown as drop-in replacements, are not. Audacity is the perfect case for this. It is usually presented as the free open-source Adobe Audition, but Audacity cannot do nondestructive editing, or careful speech volume leveler without plugins. The audio editor and multitrack view are one and the same too, and it is not optimal to mix, per example, a professional song.
In order to do what can be done with Audition, a Linux user might edit the audio clips with Audacity, then place the track in another software like Ardour or Reaper, and add the effects, mastering and add the MIDI instruments there. In Windows programs, like FL Studio, all of that can be done in one place without going back and forth, and they usually come preloaded with ready to use plugins.
To circumvent this problem, there is a software called Wine, which brings a compatibility layer to run Windows apps natively on Linux. Their website has an application database, saying which programs, and in which version, run well in Linux systems, depending on the distribution and version of Wine. Per example, at the time of this analysis, Adobe Photoshop CS6, Lightroom 5.x 64-bit, and Audition 3.0 run perfectly. For Photoshop and Lightroom, most work can be done, but for Audition, the version is too old and does not have the plugin for automatic pitch correction.
But all three of them require a license, and unless the user relays on piracy, finding these specific versions legally is really difficult. A reason to choose Lightroom over Darktable, Rawtherapee and Lightzone, is because those programs overcomplicate simple functions, like HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lighting), to edit each color individually. That can be done but there is a steep learning curve when there could simply be easy to use sliders, like in Lightroom, or like in many photo editing apps in Android, apps that are for free.
Video editing is another difficult conversation. Die-hard fans of video editing in Linux will say that Kdenlive, Openshot and Olive are perfect and more than enough. But they lack a simple yet powerful feature: playback quality. With reduced playback quality, a low-end computer could edit a video and then play it in its full resolution after it was rendered. Windows programs, like Vegas Pro and Adobe Premiere have this feature. Android video editors usually have this feature enabled by default so editing always feels smooth and the end result is a high-quality video. Lower quality proxies are not a real alternative, because they have to be pre-rendered and a lot of time is wasted.

The other alternative: Android

There is another open-source operating system that can do professional work, and its library of apps is huge. The only problem is that officially, that OS is confined to mobile devices. This one is called Android, developed by Google LLC, and it also uses the Linux kernel. Because of that fact alone, a newcomer might think that Linux and Android are compatible with each other, but that is not the case. Android is stripped of many Linux components, so, to run Android apps, Linux had to rely on emulation, just like Windows or macOS would do.
Different teams forked the Android Open-Source Platform to adapt the OS to x86 CPUs, like the ones used in computers, and Androidx86 was born, and from it, some obscure systems were born. Different Android systems for PC, like RemixOS, PhoenixOS, PrimeOS and BlissOS came to fill that niche, but again, the interface of most apps is for mobile phones. For example, FL Studio for Android or any Office app that does not require a monthly fee.

PrimeOS 0.5 Mainline
Some features missing in Linux are present in Android. HSL editing is there with apps like VSCO or InShot. Some apps are paid and others are free with advertisements or watermarks, but due to the openness of Android, hacked and pirated versions appeared quickly. Video editors for vertical and horizontal screens can create a good cut of a video even when used in a low-end device.
But Android and its PC distributions are not it. A desktop layout is necessary to work comfortably on the desktop, because a lot of these apps were meant to be used on a handheld device, with fingers instead of a keyboard and mouse. It looks like one cannot have a system full of useful apps and the comfortability of the desktop at the same time, unless it's Windows or macOS. The latter can only be used on Apple hardware, which is very expensive, and as it is closed-source, it cannot be forked to be installed on something else, especially after the CPUs were also made by Apple.
All of this looks like a hassle. Too much trouble just to be different. Why not just use Windows? Everything is in Windows, even the open-source apps, and after the introduction of Windows 11, and the Windows Subsystem for Android, there is native support for these apps. And there is also the Subsystem for Linux 2, that allows graphical apps from Linux to run alongside Windows and Android apps. There is a problem with that, however, and it's that Windows 11 has really high and specific system requirements, which leaves out the vast majority of computers running Windows 10. (Update: the Windows Subsystem for Android was ported to Windows 10 in 2023, unofficially, but works perfectly fine in capable hardware).
Windows 10 does not have access to Android apps natively, but it can run them with a third-party software called Bluestacks, or its competition LD Player. These are emulators and they confine all Android apps in a single window, and they use a high percentage of processing power and RAM. It looks like the simple solution is just that. No hassle, familiar interface and software availability. But Linux users really don't appreciate being told what to use, especially if it comes from a big company like Microsoft, whose previous CEO, Steve Ballmer called Linux a cancer. Apart from that comes the telemetry of closed-source software, and the risk of being infected by viruses and other malware made for Windows.

The apparent solution: Android support in Linux

There is a compatibility layer called Anbox (Android in a box). It is something like Wine, as it would allow nonnative software to run natively on Linux. The problem with Anbox is that it did not work more than it did. Then the only way to install it was through snapd, the controversial package format created by Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu. At some point during installation something usually failed. One of those command-line instructions gave no results or the terminal would say that the CPU is not supported. At the end, Anbox got discontinued.

Anbox (discontinued)
Another solution is Waydroid, which requires a Wayland compositor, something that is not universal in Linux as of 2024, since many popular desktop environments don't support. The major ones, like KDE Plasma and Gnome do, fortunately. The implementation sounded exciting and like it was finally closing the gap. But making it work was also like gambling. Waydroid is still in development and only beta is available. Stress from trying to make it run usually caused users to give up on Android apps on Linux all together. When it works, it's a weird experience, because unlike Android in WSA, apps are not independent. They are running inside a full screen tablet with LineageOS, an open source fork of Android, and only one app can be used at a time, by default.
Waydroid can be tweaked through the terminal to make it support windowed apps, and it works for some of them for not for others. Some of them appear transparent with only the title bar, which, by the way, is just the Android top bar for windowed apps, with no integration with the desktop like in Windows 11 or ChromeOS. It works, but only for some apps, and most of the times, a VANILLA build is installed, without support for the Google Play Store. This can be changed in the terminal but then, a persistent notification will say that the device is not certified by Google Play, and we have to follow instructions to register it using Waydroid and Google's official websites. In short, Waydroid is a hassle for new users that just expect things to work when they install an operating system.

Waydroid in multi window mode
In the 2020s decade, three Linux distributions announced they would support Android apps out of the box. Those are Linuxfx, Deepin and ExTIX. Deepin and ExTIX use the Deepin desktop environment, a little buggy and heavy on resources, and Deepin can only install Android apps through its own software store. That alone would not be a problem if the apps were not confined to those approved by the Chinese government, and they are not a lot. Apps like Instagram, YouTube or Google are not allowed in China.
The ability to install APK files is essential, and Deepin cannot do that, but ExTIX can. The first problem is it uses Anbox. It still has the same problems mentioned before, and as it was discontinued, the feeling that the product is still in development is not going to get any better. The second problem is that ExTIX is a fork of a fork with a very small team behind it. If it does not get enough support, it might die, like it happened to many small Linux distributions. If the implementation of Android apps was on Deepin, and it was more open, the container would probably work better.
The third distro is Linuxfx, which is basically a Windows clone, and Android is only available for paying customers. This is a free open-source operating system inside another free open-source operating system, there is a fee to use it. The Android container is actually a virtualized Androidx86 for PC machine, running every app in a single window. Apart from that, Linuxfx is slow, buggy and it's not trusty. They call the newer versions Windowsfx, risking a lawsuit from Microsoft, like the one that forced Lindows to be renamed to Linspire, for copyright issues. Some might argue that Linuxfx is pointless because if everything looks exactly as in Windows, then users could just stay in Windows and use the real thing. As soon as an unsupported Windows program is launched through the EXE file, the illusion disappears.

One last hope: ChromeOS?

There is another OS that actually integrates Linux and Android natively out of the box: ChromeOS. It is also made by Google, and just like macOS, it is closed-source. It is a tricky situation, because ChromiumOS, the base for it, is open-source, and can be installed on anything, but there is a catch. Android app support is only available in ChromeOS, which is confined to Chromebooks, limited low end inexpensive machines, made by Google or other companies.

ChromeOS
ChromeOS cannot be flashed on a USB drive and then installed on any computer. A Chromebook is necessary, and that would not be a problem, if it was not for two important things. The first one is that they have low storage space, and 32GB is not enough, but they keep selling them this way. The second problem is that they don't allow the installation of APK files. All Android apps need to come from the PlayStore, unless the Chromebook is in developer mode, which is annoying to get in and keep it this way. This also makes the computer less secure.
Google announced ChromeOS Flex after buying Neverware's CloudReady. But Flex does not run Android apps. Flex is basically ChromeOS for any other computer that is not a Chromebook, but it is pointless. It does not even have a use case. Everything it does can be done with any user-friendly Linux distribution, like Mint or Kubuntu. The difference is that actual Linux distributions are faster and more responsive. There is no point in installing ChromeOS Flex unless it is for a person that fears technology and only wants to access the web. They would probably not even activate the Linux container in it.

At last, a real solution

There should be a ChromiumOS derivative that can run both Linux and Android apps, because it looks like the one from Google is the only good implementation that has actually worked. The thing is, there is another option. It is called FydeOS and it's coming from China. Like ChromeOS Flex, it can also be installed on almost anything. It has its own account system, but users can also log in with a Google account, or with a local account.
It has Google Drive sync, Android apps, PlayStore through OpenGApps, and the Linux container is also there. It uses Debian, which has old packages but that limitation can be circumvented by using Flatpak, a packaging format for every Linux distribution that has up-to-date apps. Unlike Deepin, another Chinese operating system, FydeOS is not restricted in the number of applications, and anything can be installed, from the store, or as an APK file.
After testing it on a laptop with 256GB, a 5th Gen Intel i5 and 16GB of RAM, everything was working. Linux apps like Krita or GIMP ran alongside Android apps like VSCO and InShot. The Linux container also allows the installation of Wine, and a Linux file manager like Nemo or Nautilus, to run Windows apps too, so, Adobe Photoshop CS6 can also run on FydeOS. That means that the user could run SuperTuxKart, Asphalt 9 or Need for Speed Most Wanted, three Linux, Android and Windows racing game, respectively, natively.
Game emulation is also there, either through Linux or Android, for example, with the Dolphin emulator and a ROM for a GameCube game. Google Drive sync is also very important to those working in the cloud offline, something long desired by Linux users, and only possible through third party clients like InSync. This integration is native to FydeOS. Alternatively, OneDrive sync is available, although it is still buggy, and other clients, like Dropbox and MEGAsync can be installed through the Linux container.

FydeOS is a fork of ChromiumOS that can run Android apps from the Play Store or from APK files, as well as Linux apps through the penguin container, and Windows apps through Wine, Steam or Bottles within the Linux subsystem, which uses Debian by default.

Pros and cons

- Pro: Linux, Android and Windows (Wine) apps are running together in the same machine, natively. Before discovering FydeOS, that was only possible in Windows 11 with WSL and WSA.
- Con: The desktop environment is immutable. No apps can be placed on the desktop and finding apps in the app launcher can be annoying if the user is used to the Windows or Linux start menus.
- Pro: Android integration runs each app in its own independent window, without it being confined in a window for all apps, like Bluestacks or the Android implementation in Linuxfx.
- Con: The file manager is terrible. For FydeOS only gets the Downloads and Google Drive folders. For Android and Linux there are two completely separated folders, and the FydeOS folder cannot be accessed through Linux and Android apps. Files need to be placed in each container's folder and moved to the other one if editing the same file with an Android and Linux, or Windows app is necessary.
- Pro: The OS is clean. Sometimes less is more and every file can be found in the same folder, unless sub folders are created.
- Con: Too limited for advanced tools, and for some things a web search is necessary, like flashing a USB drive with a Linux distro. It requires downloading a browser extension, instead of having a dedicated app for that.
- Pro: Pictures can be enhanced your pictures with AI tools, make content of different types with the AI in apps without having to rely on the browser, like the Bing and ChatGPT apps and using mobile exclusive things, like the Threads app, through the Android integration.
- Con: Some specialized programs for Windows and macOS, like Adobe Audition, still don't have a competent enough alternative for Linux and Android. Basic audio editing in Audacity is possible, but to mix the multitracks with nondestructive effects it is necessary to use another program.
- Pro: Streaming Android apps, like Netflix and Prime Video, can save content to watch offline later, like in the Microsoft Store versions. Spotiflyer, and xManager allow the download or streaming of music without ads for free in a simple way. By the way, installing YouTube ReVanced is unnecessary, as the Chromium browser would just need for the extensions uBlock Origin and Picture in Picture to be installed and that's it.

But is it FOSS?

With all honesty, most people really don't care about the Free Open-Source Software (FOSS) philosophy, and just want something that works. That's why Windows is still widely used and people prefer piracy instead of getting used to something completely new. Besides that, even if the Operating System is FOSS, it all falls apart when tools like Wine and Google apps are used to accomplish work.
People tend to like shiny things. A computer system that looks good, and that is already accomplished, with Linux distributions among the most beautiful operating systems in the world, but they also want something that has the apps they use and love. Companies like Spotify, Microsoft and Blackmagic Design are closing the gap, but Adobe, even though people really want their products in Linux, is not releasing their widely used apps for the penguin anytime soon.
FydeOS might be from China, and might not be completely open-source, but it works. It does what people expect from it and sometimes much more. It even has a store full of APK files so users don't have to go get those files in shady websites.
For people that are sticking to FOSS, they could just stay in a Linux distribution and run Windows and Android apps through a Virtual Machine, like QEMU, or just run Waydroid with its limitations. The Linux community is big and there are developers working on different things, so the world might see a fully integrated Android subsystem in a Linux distribution at some point in the future.
There is, however, a question. ChromeOS and FydeOS are based on Gentoo, a Linux distribution, and Android has the Linux kernel too. If they could integrate the two operating systems in one, and that's considering that FydeOS did it on their own, and they use an open-source implementation of Google services, why can't a company like Canonical or Red Hat do it too?

Appendix: Is it already happening?

A fourth distribution was announced in April 2023, called blendOS v2, based on Arch Linux, promising Android support out of the box, through Waydroid. They claim that just by double clicking the APK file, the app will be installed, and they announced it would have all of those exciting new things that the Linux desktop have been implementing nowadays, like an immutable kernel, and atomic updates. OpenGApps can be installed by choosing the GAPPS build of Waydroid. Let's see how that goes.

blendOS v3 with 4 Linux containers and some Android apps open.
I will be using these Linux distros and testing until I find my perfect balance and the most capable, foolproof and hard to break system.
