2024.05.16 23:58 mattovfm Corners of Europe challenge - Part 1 (Santa Clara) - @mattovfm

Managers,
10 days ago, I made a Reddit post explaining the 'Corners of Europe' FM24 challenge concept. Here is that post. I would strongly recommend reading that to get a grasp of the idea - it is really interesting.
Following on from that, and 10 daily uploads since then, I thought I would do a post on here following up from that, as a way to invite you to watch my videos over at youtube.com/@mattovfm , and also to be able to show new viewers, and anyone who wants to try this career concept for themselves, the progression of the career itself. This is my first time doing it and I believe it is a unique concept (as far as I am aware), so it is all realistic and anything can change in the future, but this is how the first season and a half went. Enjoy the read!
I took the job over in Santa Clara with the aim to achieve the first goal of the challenge - win promotion. A newly relegated team, this proved to be the perfect job for it. We started the season well, picking up 6 wins in 9 games. We also made the Round of 16 of the Portuguese Cup... until Benfica came to the western most place in European football.
A great start to the season meant some inevitable bad form was on the horizon. 1 win in 6 games in the League put our unexpected (for me, personally, but maybe not the board) but welcomed title pursuit in jeopardy. And with two huge games to decide if we take that title coming up, a trip to P. Ferreira, the team we trailed at the top by 6 points going into the game, and a visit from 2nd placed Benfica B proved definitive for our season. Episode 5 was make or break.
A 1-0 win against the Benfica B team was a huge result to get the mental edge over a team who couldn't get promoted, no matter what (due to league rules). The momentum was carried early on into the P. Ferreira game...
Until a 94' equaliser denies us the chance to catch up in the league. For now.
With 10 games left and only our best efforts acceptable if we want to win the league, we went on to win 8 out of the 10, and drawing the other 2. However, was this enough? Even though promotion was pretty much expected after a great end to the season for us and was an expectation for myself and from the board, that title was still there to be won, and who wouldn't want that.
In P. Ferreira's final 8 games, 6 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss. A bit of magic needed to deny them of the title.
Final 2 games for the opposition; Benfica B, Porto B. Two teams who we lead 2-0 and both managed to do a comeback on us this season, possibly the games that, on reflection, may have lost us the league, showing why their teams, no matter the level, are the leaders of the country as they are.
And they proved once again why they are the elite of Portugal. Benfica away proving too tough a test for P. Ferreira, we steal first place on the penultimate day of the season. One final game to wrap up our season in the final episode of the week.
And we end the week as league champions! From 6 points behind to winning by 4, the episode ends a great week of football with a trophy lift to conclude.
Overall, an eventful week of football in the first season of the 'Corners of Europe'. Most importantly, we achieved the goal to win promotion, ticking off the first of 10 goals set out from the start. We also used the first of our 5 tactics to do so; counter-attack. Although not the most fun and effective, it was still nice to learn for a season. The perfect start to the challenge.
As stated in the first post, the ideal jobs are not going to come that easily. We start the 24/25 season with Santa Clara, and after coming up with lots of money from the Second Division generated from player sales, we spent some in the summer. It took a while to steady the ship in the First Division, until we played one of the greats of the country, Braga. A 2-1 win against the struggling giants got us our first win after 6. But it didn't just stop there. A historic 3-2 win after flying two hours in to the town of Lisbon, we were able to defeat the 20x reigning league champions in their own back garden, none other than Sporting Lisbon. A historic episode topped of by a win in the Portuguese Cup against a team who we played last season in the league, but now found ourselves two leagues apart, in Penafiel.
And after weeks of insecurity around the KA job, the offer finally came up. Leaving on a high with 3 huge wins, lots of money and a Second Division title, one very warm door closes to open to a new chilly one, some 3000km to the northwest of Europe. As our time in the Azores islands, in the middle of the Atlantic, draws to a close, the full Santa Clara playlist, in numerical order, can be found here.
Time for a new chapter in the 'Corners of Europe' challenge, over in Iceland with Knattspyrnufélag Akureyrar (I think KA is enough, though).
Here's the first video in Iceland from a few days ago, and if it interests you, make sure to come and check out this week's daily content (5PM UK time) - it's already looking to be another great season!
Thank you for reading. Hope to see you on the channel, and thank you for all the support so far. It's been my pleasure. youtube.com/@mattovfm

2024.05.01 02:37 number9muses PotW #96: Howells - Elegy for Viola, String Quartet, and String Orchestra

Good evening everyone, happy Tuesday, and welcome to another selection for our sub's weekly listening club. Each week, we'll listen to a piece recommended by the community, discuss it, learn about it, and hopefully introduce us to music we wouldn't hear otherwise :)
Last time, we listened to Gade’s Symphony no.1 You can go back to listen, read up, and discuss the work if you want to.
Our next Piece of the Week is Herbert Howells’ Elegy for Viola, String Quartet, and String Orchestra, op.15 (1917)

some listening notes from Alex Burns
Elegy was composed in 1917 and is scored for solo viola, string quartet and string orchestra. Modelled on Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, Howell’s Elegy was composed as a personal tribute to a fellow student at the RCM, who was tragically killed in the First World War. The work serves as an early indicator to Howell’s later memorial works, and was a gateway to some of his more complex chamber works.
The genesis of Elegy comes from an unpublished three-movement work Suite for String Orchestra that Howells composed around the year 1917. The slow middle movement was taken out of this work and transformed into what we know now as Elegy. The premiere took place at the RCM, with Charles Villiers Stanford conducting. The work was popular and was performed around the country, especially around London. Gerald Finzi was particularly fond of Elegy and commended it on its workmanship. The early popularity of the work was evidently important to Howells as it confirmed his skill set and determination to become a composer full time.
Elegy begins with the solo viola oscillating around a G. This sensitive opening paves the way for nearly all the motivic material in the work. The motif is then imitated by the orchestra with full harmonisation, highlighting the development of the motif. The basis of this theme is moving in thirds, which is then kept as the underlying constant throughout the work. This technique is very Vaughan Williams-esque, with his works The Lark Ascending and Phantasy Quartet using similar orchestration ideas. This further cements the fact that Howells took much inspiration from his British contemporaries.
Howells constant adapting and developing of texture is one of the highlights of Elegy. From the distant solo opening, to using a full string orchestra and quartet, who are also split in parts to create even denser harmony, the texture is an ever-developing factor throughout the work. Howells’ use of solo and full tutti passages also support this idea. Using the string quartet Howells is able to create a much smaller sound due to having less players. By adding a soloist this creates scope for much more dynamic melodic lines. The string orchestra then add to the drama of the work by utilising Howells’ quintessentially British harmonic language and adding a depth of sound that supports the woody timbre of the viola.
The melancholic atmosphere carries throughout the work, with a few snapshots of hope developing through major-minor harmonising in the accompanying strings. The lower tone of the viola adds to this feeling of melancholy, with its moody timbre and slow tempo throughout. Howells also supports this atmosphere by his use of modal harmonisation, notably his use of the Phrygian mode. The use of modes was highly popular amongst British composers of the time, especially those who were contemporaries of Howells.

TIDBITS AFTER WEEK 2
Team-specific flags
Around the stadiums there are flags hanging from stands and fences. They can be “faceless” 2-color patterned flags or they can have team-specific logos, texts and such.
Of the 357 teams that have been shown on camera so far, 277 had team-specific flags, 78 had faceless ones and 2 teams (AIK Solna and Hereford) had a curious case where their flags weren’t faceless but they were for the wrong team (Arsenal).
Team-specific crowd chants
While there are several generic chants (some region-specific) that will play for every team, there are certain chants that will only be heard when a specific team is playing that match, as long as the stadium is of decent size (none of the Div2 or Div3 ones).
Of the 330 teams that have been shown on camera playing on big stadiums so far, 123 had audible team-specific crowd chants.
Commentator mentions
Between minutes 75 and 85, the main commentator will mention the current situation of the match’s score for whichever team is in possession at that moment. It can be a generic comment where the team’s name isn’t mentioned, or a special line that does mention the team’s name. When a team can have a special mention in that timeframe, the colour commentator might also mention the team by name during the half-time break.
Of the 253 teams that have been mentioned on camera so far, 30 had their mention using the team’s name.
Real stadiums
Real stadium models are very rare, with most teams playing their matches on generic stadiums that repeat over and over. It’s not until we get to the top divisions that the real ones make an appearance.
Of the 279 teams shown on camera playing at their home stadiums so far, only 22 of them played in real-life stadium models, and 2 of those teams (AC Milan and Inter) played in the same stadium (San Siro).
That’s all that was left to mention about the 2nd week of the season. On the following post I’ll move on to the next week of matches, with a recap of Week 3 Day 1, including a short description of each recorded match accompanying their stats and events. Will post it on Tuesday 30th.

2024.04.09 20:45 dani26795 [FIFA 07] World Wide League 07 Week 2 Day 5 (9th-7th Divisions)

Following the previous post, here’s a recap of the 5th day from the 2nd week of the "World Wide League 07" project (full playlist of it can be found here).
Some notes:
You can find descriptions of each division as well as the teams participating in them on the Week 1 posts previously submitted in this subreddit.
Every time you see a team with their name in bold, it's a team of which every match will be recorded.
For ordering the leaderboard table, I simply use whatever the game displays (when there are full ties, it simply orders the teams at random) and then do some correlation since once the 1st week of matches is done, the first match of the next week happens automatically offscreen.

The Survivors, Nine Years Later
So, this post translates an interview with Numa’s parents, but doesn’t translate the column on the right. so here’s the translation:
https://preview.redd.it/8msh57rxgnrc1.jpg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5506098a448f1a7b9ef8dcc963891ccd8e7e7d1d
THE SURVIVORS TODAY
Fernando Parrado (31): He confesses this is his best year, while in between diapers and milk bottles of his daughter, Verónica María, who is 1 month old. He married the Belgian model Veronique van Wassenhove, works at his father’s shop, practices jogging and is a motocross fanatic.
Gustavo Zerbino (28): Changed Medicine for Bussines Management and is the president of the Old Christians rugby club. He lives with his family (he’s an “undefeated bachelor”), practices football and plays with his dog, Fritz.
Roberto Canessa (28): He received his medical degree a week ago. He works in two hospitals, practices motocross with Parrado, and also tennis and squash. He’s father to Hilario (4) and, if the ultrasound doesn’t lie, another boy will come in November.
Antonio Vicentín (28): He lives in a Mediterranean-style house. He films video-cassetes of his two-year-old daughter, Lucía, collects weapons and likes hunting. He works at a real estate firm while he finishes his law degree. He plays a prop position in the Old Christians and, to him, rugby is sacred.
Eduardo Strauch (34): He interrupted his arquitecture studies after the accident. But he works at a friend’s study and passes his days between plans and carperter’s squares. He shares his life and memories with Laura Braga and has a nine month old daughter, Olivia.
José Luis Inciarte (33): Gentle, down to earth and hard-headed (“because of being Basque and taurine”), he married Soledad González Mullen. He’s an angronomist and works in dairy production. José Luis and María Soledad, his children, surround him when he comes back from the countryside.

TIDBITS AFTER WEEK 1
Team-specific flags
Around the stadiums there are flags hanging from stands and fences. They can be “faceless” 2-color patterned flags or they can have team-specific logos, texts and such.
Of the 336 teams that have been shown on camera so far, 266 had team-specific flags, 69 had faceless ones and 1 team (AIK Solna) had a curious case where their flags weren’t faceless but they were for the wrong team (Arsenal).
Team-specific crowd chants
While there are several generic chants (some region-specific) that will play for every team, there are certain chants that will only be heard when a specific team is playing that match, as long as the stadium is of decent size (none of the Div2 or Div3 ones).
Of the 336 teams that have been shown on camera so far, 109 had audible team-specific crowd chants.
Commentator mentions
Between minutes 75 and 85, the main commentator will mention the current situation of the match’s score for whichever team is in possession at that moment. It can be a generic comment where the team’s name isn’t mentioned, or a special line that does mention the team’s name.
Of the 169 teams that were mentioned on camera so far, 149 teams received the generic lines without name-dropping, 19 had their name mentioned in the time period shown above, and 1 special case (Liverpool) was mentioned by name during the half-time break.
Real stadiums Real stadium models are very rare, with most teams playing their matches on generic stadiums that repeat over and over. It’s not until we get to the top divisions that the real ones make an appearance.
Of the 168 stadiums shown on camera so far, only 13 of them were real-life models.
That’s pretty much all that was left that I wanted to mention about the 1st week of the season. On the following post I’ll move on to the next week of matches, with a recap of Week 2 Day 1, hopefully with a short description of each match accompanying their stats and events. Will post it next Wednesday if I can.
Next post.

2024.03.02 21:32 dani26795 [FIFA 07] World Wide League 07 Week 1 Day 5 (9th-7th Divisions)

Following the previous post, here’s a recap of the 5th day from the 1st week of the "World Wide League 07" project I began at the start of the year. First off, here’s the full WWL07 playlist, where I place every video related to the project.
Of note: every time you see a team with their name in bold, it's a team of which every match will be recorded. Also, for ordering the leaderboard table, I simply use whatever the game displays (when there are full ties, it simply orders the teams at random) and then do some correlation since once the 1st week of matches is done, the first match of the next week happens automatically offscreen.
WEEK 1 DAY 5
9th Division (Morning)
The division features the midcard of the 3 star teams. This is the first division to have a match played in a real stadium (Boavista’s Bessa).
The 24 teams featured in this division and their stats:
1) SC Heerenveen

2024.02.27 20:56 aig7775 My Erasmus experience in Lisbon, Portugal

I thought a post like this might help someone and it would be a great way to remember all that happened during my semester in Portugal! In this post, I'll talk about Accommodation, Prices, Transportation, Fun, Overall vibe and tips for students who are about to go on their Erasmus.
ACCOMMODATION
Over the last couple of years, accommodation prices have skyrocketed in Lisbon (a room in a shared flat goes for ~350-500 EUR, pre-Covid prices were 200-250 EUR). In my experience, some people were very happy with their living arrangements (myself included) however finding a suitable place to live in the city with a reasonable price is rather difficult. Facebook groups are worthless for looking for accommodation since there are more scammers than legit landlords (despite this the landlady who rented me my room contacted me from my Facebook post), Idealista is a bit better, however, you still have to be extremely careful. I would recommend that anyone doing Erasmus in Lisbon live somewhere around Arroios (Green Line), Anjos (Green Line), Bairro do Rego (Blue/Yellow Line), Cidade Universitaria (Yellow Line), and Sete Rios (Blue Line), These places have rather good metro lines near them and it's easy to get everywhere from them. !When looking for a flat beware of rooms with no windows, despite them being illegal to rent, there are plenty of them on offer. Furthermore, avoid erasmusu, Erasmus Life Housing and other agencies like that. They charge you excessive fees from what I heard and are there for the landlord and not you! Do not rent a flat in Bairro alto above all of the bars if you value good sleep!
PRICES
For Germans, French, Dutch, Belgian and other high-income countries Lisbon will be pretty cheap and manageable, but for other countries, it might seem a bit expensive on the groceries side. Since I'm from Lithuania I didn't encounter a lot of shock when I saw grocery prices, because they were close to what I had at home. The only thing I noticed that was more expensive was beef costing 9-10 EUkg while in Lithuania the same meat costs 6.5 EUkg. My weekly groceries without cutting a lot of corners came out to 30 EUR. I didn't eat a lot in the restaurants, but the prices vary from 10 to 20 EUR for a meal, but a standout was 1.5 EUR kebab in an Asian place Mae near Arroios.
Entry into a club costs 10 EUR (with no student organisation card, more on those later), drinks in clubs are 4.5 for a shot, and 7-8 EUR for a small cocktail. Cocktails at Erasmus Corner cost about 5-6 EUR at most, they are not brilliant, but it does the job. A beer that's not considered very cheap is 2 EUR (you can find a large one for 1.5 EUR). Smoking is a tad bit expensive in Portugal (for me) costing 5.8 EUR for Marlboro Red and 4.5 for Terea.
Transportation is extremely cheap for students under 23, as it's free since 2024 01 01. Bolt is also extremely cheap with me getting 40-50% discounts in the app most of the time and paying 2-3 EUR for a 20 min drive. FlixBus depending on the destination is 3-20 EUR, but it's very worth it to explore Portugal by bus since the prices are okay and there are a lot of destinations to choose from. Flights to Madeira are 50 EUR roundtrip with no baggage on Ryanair (some lucky people got tickets for 30 EUR roundtrip), Marrakech can be as low as 40 EUR roundtrip, Sevilla - 30-40 EUR, Barcelona 30-40 EUR. Thus Lisbon is also great for discovering neighbouring countries by flying.
Student organisations (ESN and ELL) charge 20 EUR for their card each. ESN is a must-have due to the ESN card discount for FlixBus (10-15% discounts) and Ryanair (10% discount on 4 international flights + 20kg checked bag for free). ELL is a good to have due to their trips being better organised and more events, however all of them are paid and cost from 10 to 15 EUR. For clubs having both is amazing as most of my friends had both so it was easier when deciding on which club to go to.
TRANSPORTATION
I'll talk about public transportation and Bolt since I didn't rent a car in Lisbon. Public transportation for the most part is okay except buses. Avoid buses at all costs, 5 times I tried taking a bus 4 of them the bus either didn't come or was late by 10-20 mins. Metro is great and on time. Due to this, I'd recommend you live somewhere near Blue or Green Line as they connect with most of the city (I preferred Blue Line due to it stopping at good locations: Colombo Shopping Centre, Marques de Pombal, Baixa-Chiado, Praca do Comercio).
Bolt as I said is extremely cheap (I pay 15 EUR at home for a drive I'd pay 4 EUR in Lisbon), take it and enjoy it while you can. The cars are new, drivers have to pass a special test to be able to drive Bolt so everything is extremely smooth and the people who drive you are very nice.
FUN Lisbon is a city that never sleeps there is a plethora of clubs to choose from, the ones I have been to are Lisboa Rio, Lust in Rio, and K Urban. I'd rank them 1. K Urban 2. Lisboa Rio 3. Lust in Rio. Then there are a lot of museums and the one that is a must-visit coming from me, a certified museum disliker, is MAAT. Just don't go 2 hours before closing, spend at least 4-5 hours there and enjoy it slowly, there's a lot to see and read about.
And definitely, trips are the best part of the fun. I visited a lot of places and my recommendations would be: Braga, Porto, Madeira, Coimbra, Portimao, Nazare, Cascais, Cabo da Roca, Praia da Ursa. Don't go to Oceanarium for 25 EUR, it's a scam, wait for a promo to get tickets for 7 EUR which makes it worth it then.
OVERALL VIBE
Lisbon is a great city in and of itself however, it didn't just grow on me. It is cleaner than Milan, but it's still far from what I had at home. I didn't find the city super walkable due to it being very hilly, Costa da Caparica is hard to get to when it's warm due to the sheer amount of people trying to get onto the 3710 bus and Carcavelos is just another beach with no great vibe as Caparica... But having a lot of digital nomads means that many Portuguese speak English rather well, though making friends with them is pretty hard as they will choose to befriend other Portuguese before an Erasmus student. I enjoyed it, but to love it, most likely not.
TIPS FOR PEOPLE GOING ON ERASMUS
I hope you got something valuable from my post and if you have any questions please reply to this post and I'll try to answer once I see them!
