2024.05.19 04:19 BPBAttacks9 KCK woman raises safety concerns after dog attack (5/5/24: Kansas City, Kansas, USA)

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - A woman bitten by a dog in KCK’s Strawberry Hill neighborhood calls roaming dogs a growing problem and is raising her voice to city leaders.
On the evening of Sunday, May 5, Jesse Molina was taking a walk with her husband and her dog Lucy. They saw another dog wandering the street unsupervised. In her three years living there, she’s seen numerous dogs roaming free. She kept a watchful eye but the dog seemed to be minding its own business. Then suddenly, the dog darted at her and Lucy. The dog, which she described as a pit bull and police described as a pit mix, gave them no warning. No bared teeth, no growling. Just attacked out of the blue, unprovoked.
“It took all three of us fighting this dog off and I’ve never, I’ve seen dog fights and this is this was not, this was, it was a monster,” Molina said, clearly still so distraught that she had trouble finding words to describe the moment.
THE ATTACK
She said the dog lunged at Lucy’s throat. Lucy has stitches and staples in various places. Molina has a bandage on her wrist. I photo she took in the hospital shows a deep, gaping puncture wound. She began crying as she described the day and her fear for others.
“It just fluctuates between grief, sadness, profound depression,” Molina said of her emotional state. “And I think gratitude because we’re still alive.” She’s been writing to elected officials. She wants something done to prevent this from happening to anyone else. She thanked her Strawberry Hill community of neighbors with intervening to help. She praised the police department’s animal services unit officer who responded and started an investigation. And she wondered what the solution could be. More officers for enforcement? Stricter laws? More education?
WHAT’S BEING DONE
KCK police said they are already being aggressive with enforcement and education. Police Department spokeswoman Nancy Chartrand researched data on complaints and citations in 2022 and 2023, the most recent years available for year-end reports. Chartrand said the department had a 26% increase in calls about dogs off-leash in 2023 than the previous year. In that same time, they had a 62% increase in the number of citations issued.
A municipal court judge makes the final call, Chartrand said, on what fines and orders to give for violations of several ordinances already on the books.
Ordinances require dogs to be registered, spayed or neutered, vaccinated and kept on a leash. There is an ordinance related to allowing a dog to reasonably place a person in fear for their safety. All are misdemeanors. There is a process for having a dog declared dangerous and requiring additional measures from the dog’s owner.
What they don’t include is automatically euthanizing a dog after a bite. The current steps involve a 10-day quarantine. If someone admits to being the dog’s owner, they get the dog back pending court. In court, a judge decides on fines and restrictions. If no one admits to owning the dog, the dog is put down because the shelter can’t responsibly adopt out a dog with a bite history.
BREED BANS Molina said it’s not the fact that she and Lucy were attacked by a dog in general but the extreme nature of the attack, which she attributes to the breed.
Bans on specific breeds have fallen out of favor in recent years under pressure from residents who consider them arbitrary, discriminatory, and ineffective. Animal rescue groups have argued against them. The ASPCA has said, “Breed-specific legislation, or BSL, is the blanket term for laws that either restrict or ban certain dog breeds in a misguided effort to decrease dog attacks on humans and other animals.” Wyandotte County had a pit bull ban on the books for nearly 30 years and repealed it 5 years ago. Nearly every other city in the metro has repealed breed-specific bans, moving instead to dangerous dog ordinances that focus on the behavior of a dog rather than deeming particular breeds, typically pit bulls, as dangerous.
MOVING FORWARD Molina now plans to move to the suburbs where she hopes she, her husband and Lucy will be safer.
“I’m not going to stay in the city, but I’m going to make as much noise as possible before I leave,” Molina said. “And hopefully it will do something because I don’t know what else to do.”
Chartrand said the police department has been focused on both enforcement and education because, while some are willfully ignoring the rules, others simply grew up with a different perspective on what’s okay. She said the department partners with three outreach groups that hit neighborhoods daily to explain why such rules exist and direct them to free spay/neuter clinics. There are many responsible pet owners in the city, Chartrand emphasized, but those who ignore local ordinances are causing a disproportionate amount of problems.
Chartrand said the number of reported dog bites is down slightly in the past 12 months: 35 versus 42. She added that not everyone is willing to seek charges as a bite victim, and that is an essential step to holding dog owners accountable. She praised Molina for standing firm and encouraged others to show as much conviction.

Gas Shut Off Valve?
Replacing a gas water heater. Turned the shut off near the heater and the pilot light went out. Cracked the nut (circled in green) but heard hissing and smelled a lot of gas. Turned the valve the other way, same thing. Was it just residual gas or is this gate valve broken?
Also, is this little guy near the meter the “main shut off”? I assume so but it’s not labeled…

2024.05.18 17:00 AutoModerator Weekly education, training, and professional development megathread

Hey Everyone,
Welcome to the Neuropsychology weekly education, training, and professional development megathread. The subreddit gets a large proportion of incoming content dedicated to questions related to the schooling and professional life of neuropsychologists. Most of these questions can be answered by browsing the subreddit function; however, we still get many posts with very specific and individualized questions (often related to coursework, graduate programs, lab research etc.).
Often these individualized questions are important...but usually only to the OP given how specific and individualized they are. Because of this, these types of posts are automatically removed as they don't further the overarching goal of the subreddit in promoting high-quality discussion and information related to the field of neuropsychology. The mod team has been brainstorming a way to balance these two dilemmas, this recurring megathread will be open every end for a limited time to ask any question related to education, or other aspects of professional development in the field of neuropsychology. In addition to that, we've compiled (and will continue to gather) a list of quick Q/A's from past posts and general resources below as well.
So here it is! General, specific, high quality, low quality - it doesn't matter! As long as it is, in some way, related to the training and professional life of neuropsychologists, it's fair game to ask - as long as it's contained to this megathread! And all you wonderful subscribers can fee free to answer these questions as they appear. The post will remain sticked for visibility and we encourage everyone to sort by new to find the latest questions and answers.
Also, here are some more common general questions and their answers that have crossed the sub over the years:
  1. “Neuropsychologists of reddit, what was the path you took to get your job, and what advice do you have for someone who is considering becoming a neuropsychologist?”
  2. ”Is anyone willing to describe a day in your life as a neuropsychologist/what personality is suited for this career?”
  3. "What's the path to becoming a neuropsychologist"
  4. "IAMA Neuropsychology Graduate in the EU, AMA"
  5. "List of Neuropsychology Programs in the USA"

US Marine Corps PFC Gary Martini: Vietnam War Medal of Honor Recipient #shorts #history #military
Medal of Honor Citation:
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. On 21 April 1967, during Operation Union, elements of Company F, conducting offensive operations at Binh Son, encountered a firmly entrenched enemy force and immediately deployed to engage them. The marines in Pfc. Martini's platoon assaulted across an open rice paddy to within 20 meters of the enemy trench line where they were suddenly struck by hand grenades, intense small-arms, automatic-weapons, and mortar fire. The enemy onslaught killed 14 and wounded 18 marines, pinning the remainder of the platoon down behind a low paddy dike. In the face of imminent danger, Pfc. Martini immediately crawled over the dike to a forward open area within 15 meters of the enemy position where, continuously exposed to the hostile fire, he hurled hand grenades, killing several of the enemy. Crawling back through the intense fire, he rejoined his platoon which had moved to the relative safety of a trench line. From this position he observed several of his wounded comrades lying helpless in the fire-swept paddy. Although he knew that one man had been killed attempting to assist the wounded, Pfc. Martini raced through the open area and dragged a comrade back to a friendly position. In spite of a serious wound received during this first daring rescue, he again braved the unrelenting fury of the enemy fire to aid another companion lying wounded only 20 meters in front of the enemy trench line. As he reached the fallen marine, he received a mortal wound, but disregarding his own condition, he began to drag the marine toward his platoon's position. Observing men from his unit attempting to leave the security of their position to aid him, concerned only for their safety, he called to them to remain under cover, and through a final supreme effort, moved his injured comrade to where he could be pulled to safety, before he fell, succumbing to his wounds. Stouthearted and indomitable, Pfc. Martini unhesitatingly yielded his life to save two of his comrades and insure the safety of the remainder of his platoon. His outstanding courage, valiant fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty reflected the highest credit upon himself, the Marine Corps, and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

2024.05.18 05:19 lakorai 2024 Camping Gear Memorial Day Deals Megathread (USA)

As promised, The 2024 Memorial Day Camping Gear deal thread is here to help our fellow readers some money for this upcoming holiday break. I have requested the mods keep this post a sticky until June 2, which is when most retailers end their Memorial Day sales. Keep in mind that not all US retailers will ship internationally and any savings you get can be wiped out from import duty, tariffs and taxes from your home country.
Keep in mind inflation has caused many items to have 10-30% price increases as warned by 's post from 2021. Prices will continue to go up as inflation gets out of control, so this could be a better time to buy camping gear than waiting till later in the year.
New for 2024 I am streamlining the deals thread so we can add additional retailers and cut down on clutter. I will list the retailer, example deals and if the retailer participates in cashback sites. Return policy, company background, credit card offers, free shipping etc will no longer be listed as that can be looked up on the retailer's website. This will make the threads appear on less posts and hopefully will flow a bit better. Thanks to several of you who offered this suggestion. I am also adding direct vendor sales as sales start (Marmot, Outdoor Research, Sierra Designs, Outdoor Vitals etc).
This thread focuses on retailers and e-commerce sites in the United States who sell multiple brands, are reputable businesses (ie not scam sites) and they ship and sell to anywhere in the US. I encourage you to check with the vendors directly and to use cashback sites like Activejunky.com and Topcashback.com to save as much money as possible in addition to these links.
Checkout Cashbackholic.com and cashbackmonitor.com to see what cashback sites are offering the highest cashback for whatever site you wish to shop at. Typically activejunky.com is the highest paying cashback site, but sometimes Maxrebates.com , topcashback.com and rakuten.com can be higher.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this sales thread for last year. I hope to have helped save fellow Redditors as much money as possible to help get more people into camping and the Backcountry. If you find additional retailers of note or sales please comment below and I will update this thread.

2024.05.17 20:43 30th-account Unified and automatic way of adding publications/presentations to website/CV

So my lab is pretty big, we've traditionally used a weird combo of google scholar export and manual citations (for presentations) to make a list of our works on our website. And delegated 1 unlucky grad student to do all the manual labor.
The issue is that our lab is growing so now we're doing something like a hundred presentations/publications a year.
I've been trying to set up a way to automate the citations or at least get them unified so that we keep track of everything we do. But there's a few avenues I'm not too sure about.
The current setup is 2 things. I have a list of publications and a list of presentations. For publications, I just get a scraper to directly copy the stuff from my professor's google scholar to the website. For presentations, I have a Google form that everyone fills out (with pdf link) and it links to a spreadsheet that automatically formats into a citation that automatically updates into a table on our group website. The issue is that my professor wants to combine the 2 into a single list (publications + presentations).
So the main change idea I had was for everyone who presents to manually upload their powerpoint/pdf into a OneDrive or Google Drive group folder (I'm thinking Google Drive since it is usually more reliable as a viewing thing). Then link the url to a zotero collection with a manual citation for the presentation. An issue for this is that I can't seem to find any way to automatically update a zotero collections on a website. So I'd still have to manually copy and paste the citation every time someone uploads a new presentation/publication.
I don't know if there's a better presentation/publication display flow for any of you.

2024.05.17 14:13 TackleWorth6604 Anyline: A Fast, Accurate, and Detailed Line Detection Preprocessor

Anyline: A Fast, Accurate, and Detailed Line Detection Preprocessor
intro
Anyline is a ControlNet line preprocessor that accurately extracts object edges, image details, and textual content from most images. Users can input any type of image to quickly obtain line drawings with clear edges, sufficient detail preservation, and high fidelity text, which are then used as input for conditional generation in Stable Diffusion.

Technical Details

The model and algorithms used in Anyline are based on innovative efforts stemming from the "Tiny and Efficient Model for the Edge Detection Generalization (TEED)" paper (arXiv:2308.06468). The TEED preset in ComfyUI also originates from this work, marking it as a powerful visual algorithm (TEED is currently the state-of-the-art). For more details, please refer to the paper.
TEED

Comparison with Other Line Extraction Preprocessors

Anyline uses a processing resolution of 1280px, and hence comparisons are made at this resolution. Comparing with other commonly used line preprocessors, Anyline offers substantial advantages in contour accuracy, object details, material textures, and font recognition (especially in large scenes). It also performs better in reducing noise in most scenes, resulting in cleaner image processing with fewer inaccuracies during generation.

Effects Overview

Anyline, in combination with the Mistoline ControlNet model, forms a complete SDXL workflow, maximizing precise control and harnessing the generative capabilities of the SDXL model. Anyline can also be used in SD1.5 workflows with SD1.5's ControlNet, although it generally performs better in the Anyline+MistoLine setup within the SDXL workflow.
https://preview.redd.it/vkc8bcop9z0d1.jpg?width=3208&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=45a7f8062c451e45011dc2b24888b0ff9fe482e1
Note: The final result is highly dependent on the base model used. Please select the appropriate base model according to your needs.

Installation

To use Anyline as a ComfyUI plugin, you need to install comfyui_controlnet_aux first! You can follow the instructions here: https://github.com/Fannovel16/comfyui_controlnet_aux?tab=readme-ov-file#installation
Once you have comfyui_controlnet_aux installed, follow these steps:
  1. Open your IDE and ComfyUI command line, ensuring the Python environments match.
  2. Navigate to the custom nodes directory:cd custom_nodes
  3. Clone the repository, or manually download this repository and put it in the ComfyUI/custom_nodes directory:git clone https://github.com/TheMistoAI/ComfyUI-Anyline.git
  4. Navigate to the cloned directory: cd ComfyUI-Anyline
  5. Install dependencies: pip install -r requirements.txt
  6. The model will automatically download upon first use. If this fails, manually download from HuggingFace Repo and place the .pth file in the specified directory.

ComfyUI Workflow

Upon installation, the Anyline preprocessor can be accessed in ComfyUI via search or right-click. The standard workflow using Anyline+Mistoline in SDXL is as follows
https://preview.redd.it/d3linq6u9z0d1.jpg?width=2073&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3b9435350b189d189801f2fc35b4408b64724040
You can download this workflow JSON here: ComfyUI Workflow

Limitations and Future Development

  • Anyline may encounter difficulties with images that exhibit camera-like blurs or soft focus, and may require iterations based on community feedback.
  • Due to limited personnel, there are currently no plans to develop an Anyline preprocessor plugin for AUTOMATIC1111-WebUI. We will contact the developer of the ControlNet plugin in AUTOMATIC1111-WebUI to discuss integrating Anyline into their plugin.
  • We also plan to contact the author of ComfyUI or the developer of ComfyUI-Controlnet to integrate Anyline into ComfyUI for easier future use.

Now, I tend to be firmly in the "fuck you I won't do what you tell me" camp, so I gave it some consideration before voting AGAINST Prop 4... What I ultimately landed on is this:
The SEC has 5 commissioners, and we've all seen how much noise just one SEC commissioner can make; how much of a distraction they can be (looking at you, Ms. Hester)...
Well, GameStop has 5 board members that are currently smack in the middle of WORKING to turn the company around... Can you imagine disrupting their flow now, either by replacing one (thus removing one person who's already up-to-speed with one who isn't) or adding a sixth (with who knows what biases/agendas/etc) into the mix...?! Or worse: Having to replace/add even more than one...?!
No way. They're doing fine so far... I say: Let 'em cook.
And now it's story time kiddos, so gather 'round (some words edited to avoid the [REDACTED] auto_matic mod_erator)...
The splividend was 84 years ago, and I was there on the night it happened. I had X,XXX shares BrOOKED, and I had just made a recent XX purchase that I let settle (in PLAiN) and didn't touch, for fear that they'd be in some weird transitional state on the night of the splividend...
Anyway, what I saw happen was this: Shortly after market close my BrOOKED shares received the splividend, quick and clean, no problem... My PLAiN shares tho? The splividend didn't hit there until hours later, during the long period that the splividend was rolling out to all the brokers and other institutions... And I wasn't the only one who saw this, I saw plenty of others commenting the same thing at the time...
So don't you fucking try and tell me there's no difference!!! Y'all can all HOLD however you want: broker, retirement account, PLAiN, BrOOK, whatever... Hell, find some paper certificates and shove 'em up somewhere safe, IDGAF you do you, there's no shame in your GameStop... But never tell me there's not some kind of functional difference between BrOOK and PLAiN, because I've seen it! And the recent Computershare AMA (see that post, since I can't link to it because [REDACTED]) affirms it yet again again again:
...shareholders, and the aggregate number of shares they hold in either DRS or DassPP format...
Well, we know DassPP = PLAiN, which only leaves one thing that "DRS" can mean: Motherfucking BrOOK.
And now for my prediction, or maybe just my hope/wish: We've all seen the absolute enshittification of the gaming industry recently, with the latest debacle of Sony fucking-over the Helldivers players... And that's just one in a long line of the big AAA game makers thinking they can do whatever the fuck they want, their own paying customers (aka players) be damned...
Well, wouldn't it be great if some company were to, IDK, build a way for the Power to be given back to the Players? Some kind of tech-stack that would be easy for game makers, big and small, to adopt, that would give them an instant and easy way to access the blockchain, complete with an in-game currency that is automatically interoperable with lots of other currencies, and not only in-game assets that are tradable on a wide array of marketplaces, but that they can earn royalties on forever (incentivizing them to continue supporting games that players actually like playing for longer than they do today...)
IDK, but that would Delight the shit out of me... And I personally think that not only is this what GameStop is still cooking-up behind the scenes, but I think GME Entertainment is going to be a new games development and publishing arm of GameStop, one that will build some initial proof-of-concept games that show-off the power of this new tech, and which will eventually be spun-off, with shares in the new company being distributed to GME holders...
And, oh yeah, didn't Microsoft just layoff a bunch of game development teams that had previously made a bunch of games that people loved...? Seems to me that if a new, scrappy, videogame development/publishing house needed some top-tier talent, now would be a fine time to snap some of those people up...
I mean, what do you do when "pHySiCaL GaMeS ArE DyInG So tHeRe's nOtHiNg tO SeLl"...? Start making digital games of your own to sell... But WTF do I know?
Anyway, thank you for coming to my GME Talk.

2024.05.16 03:00 Only-Experience-4000 My Citation Guide: for those who don't use reference managers

  1. Search of Copy and paste the studies title into Google
When opening results on Google, you can use this method to open them faster and not have to go back to the Google page: if you are on Mac = hold the 'command key' and click on the hyperlinked date within the in-text citation. if on Windows hold the 'ctrl' key and click the hyperlinked date within the in-text citation: more on this here: https://www.wikihow.com/Open-a-Page-in-a-New-Window )
Open a few versions of the same study in different journals and look through to see if any have the citation already formatted; if so, take it and go; if not, export one in endnote format if they have a button for that
If you need to export it it usually has a few formats, I prefer the endnote format (to open this you need to download endnote downloading endnote and, using that, download the citation, and it automatically formats it to APA7, which you can copy and you are done (get endnote 20 here https://support.clarivate.com/Endnote/s/article/Download-EndNote?language=en_US )
If these websites don't have the citation or no export feature, you can try step 3 or format it yourself. I am familiar now with step 3, and its much faster than formatting it yourself.
  1. ChatGPT: open a ChatGPT chat and put in this prompt in the same message before pasting your information; "format this into APA7..." in the same message, copy and paste the whole top half of any of the webpages you opened with the study, make sure it has the title, journal name, date, doi link author. Don't worry about there being other content in the message such as advertisements and stuff as ChatGPT will look for what it needs to make the reference. You can also use this method for other kind of references such as websites as long as yo ucopy in all the information you need. Here is all the information you'll need about APA7 requirements:
https://guides.library.uq.edu.au/referencing/apa7/journal-articles
https://guides.library.uq.edu.au/referencing/apa7/book
https://guides.library.uq.edu.au/referencing/apa7/book-chapter
https://guides.library.uq.edu.au/referencing/apa7/webpage
Sometimes, I just skip to step 3 because I find it faster and more accurate than the rest of the steps, as not all journals format their references properly.

2024.05.15 21:01 Shazam8301 If I admit to running a Stop Sign in court, but that the stop sign was blocked by cars parked on the shoulder, will I get out of the 3-point ticket?

I was driving down this road in my town and I totally blew through this stop sign, which to me, came out of nowhere. There was a cop waiting 50ft after the stop sign who immediately pulled me over and ticketed me a 3-point ticket for blatantly running the stop sign. I told him I just totally missed it and didn’t see it until I was right next to it.
After driving away, I realized that there were cars parked leading up to the stop sign, covering it from view until you were basically directly next to it. I drew in this picture to show the cars lined up along the shoulder the entire length of that part of the road. Both before and after the stop sign. I was pulled over a few houses after the stop sign because there was hardly any room to park on the shoulder.
When I go to court to fight this ticket, if the cop doesn’t show up, do I even have to present my case, or does the case automatically get waved? If the cop does show up to court, would my explanation be enough to get the ticket waved? This is my first driving citation.
Any professional responses are appreciated!! Thanks!

2024.05.15 15:08 tokemura PSA: published study IS NOT a bulletproof evidence. Read the actual paper with critical thinking before citing it!

This PSA is inspired by the recent post here called Did you know olive oil is terrible for your skin. The OP is referencing a really BS study that proves nothing (check good breakdowns in the comments) and the post surprisingly has got so many upvotes ☹
It's time to say out loud that if a paper is published as a study it is not an evidence automatically. I have found an informative video from Lab Muffin Beauty called Rosemary oil for hair growth? How to spot bad science. She explained really well how the research is done, how studies are published and reviewed and why not every study is an actual science (+how to spot methodology errors).
I also constantly see comments where people reference some studies they didn't actually read (the paper itself with methodology, not just the abstract) thinking if a study is published then it's a proof. Well, it is not.
My own minimum criteria for a study to consider it worth referencing:
  1. The study is peer reviewed in a journal with good reputation and high citation rating;
  2. The study is done in-vivo on actual volunteers with actual topical product;
  3. It is placebo controlled, meaning the product is compared to no treatment at all (and both formulas are disclosed);
  4. It is double/triple blinded;
  5. Number and distribution of volunteers is statistically significant (hello claims "9 of 10 women" from Garnier);
  6. The result is measured with objective methods, better instrumentally, not just a questionnaire;
  7. The result is not only statistically significant, but also significant for the consumer.

2024.05.14 02:52 Ela-Rites I (28F) took some LSD in 2021 and subsequently had a full blown psychotic break for 18 Days. AMA

One night in late January my boyfriend and I took more acid after taking an initial dose. Everything seemed fine, usual tripping stuff. I remember later feeling so much love and so connected to everything that I asked my boyfriend if he wanted me to break up with him, if that would make him happy. He doesn't recall this conversation at all.
When he responded, it was as if he were repeating my words in slow motion, and everything I said afterwards he simply repeated as a question. After that, I remember a hallucination in which my boyfriend was telling me I took the perfect ratio of acid to my body weight to "unlock" my third eye. By morning I was acting so strangely that I was taken to the hospital by my boyfriend and mom. I was released briefly the next day but I remained incoherent so I was taken to a different hospital on the following day.
They eventually sent me to a psych hospital where I remained for the rest of the days I was "officially" psychotic. They put me on one of the strongest antipsychotics, which snapped me out of my mind's own inner hell after over a week, and I still wasn't completely back.
They released me with a prescription for the antipsychotic I was on, and I still remained delusional (but no hallucinations) for about six months before I finally fully came back to reality. I have some fragmented memories of being in psychosis, so AMA.
EDIT: I am so sorry I didn't get to everyone's questions, now I'm so overwhelmed by the comments I don't know how much more I can answer, but I will try. I had no idea this would blow up! Thank you guys for all your supportive comments, the few that weren't really got under my skin, but I was also having a bad night.
EDIT #2: Okay, unfortunately I have to stop answering questions in the comments, but I'll try to answer some common ones here.
  1. I was diagnosed with Schizo-Affective bipolar type disorder after the break. My paternal grandmother had Bipolar type II.
  2. I don't know EXACTLY how much acid I took, I just took one and a third gel tabs. Also, we didn't test the tabs we had so it may not have been pure LSD, I don't know.
  3. The hallucinations and delusions were complicated, so I'll just summarize them and my behavior:
I thought in the hospital that aliens were trying to abduct me, I kept sneaking out of my hospital room, taking off my clothes, and I did pee myself several times.
I thought my dad was God and my mom was Gaia. Everyone's pupils seemed to be huge.
I also experienced two nurses not meeting my eyes whenever I looked at them to ask them something, but it was like they shifted their eyes automatically, as if some force was controlling them.
I thought I was the virgin Mary at one point and that my boyfriend was either Satan or Jesus.
I remember thinking everyone was zombies, and that my grandma was rescuing my cousin and I and taking us to outer space.
I had a horrible experience where I felt myself losing consciousness and felt as if I was going to hell, like my consciousness was literally being destroyed.
  1. I am doing much better now, although I occasionally have manic episodes.
Thank you everyone for reading and asking questions, I hope you all have a wonderful day and life.

2024.05.14 01:55 flwwhtrbt Mini Pirate News

Well, let's wrap up what I've found at the very least interesting in the last couple weeks for pirates and purists alike! This one is very small, not much happening lately!
Sony:
As maybe you've seen, there's no better indication that 'if they don't let you buy it, then pirate it' than Sony delists Ghost of Tsushima PC from various Steam regions, much like Helldivers 2 saw.

Following Sony's decision last week to delist Helldivers 2 in 170 regions worldwide on Steam, it seems this will be the firm's PC stance moving forward, and it has since done the same for the imminent PC release of Ghost of Tsushima. More regions have been added to the list, taking the total number of territories affected to 180, which is now consistent across both titles.
Previously, Sony has said that Ghost of Tsushima's single player offering would be unaffected by this additional requirement. The game's Steam Page still states that a PSN account is required to play the Legends multiplayer mode, but it was delisted anyway. Due to the open nature of Valve's platform, these changes are pretty visible, and including Sucker Punch's primarily single player open world epic in this blanket ban comes as a legitimate surprise.
SteamDB's post here shows the refund.
This is bullshit. The good news? Sony do not use Denuvo for their PC games, so it will be available as soon as possible to be pirated.

Rockstar:
By all accounts, it looks like Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption will be releasing on PC - in line with their usual tactics of releasing on a console platform and leaving PC for last, at least it will (probably) be coming to PC.

Denuvo:
A Denuvo 'outage' made a completely single-player game Persona 5 unplayble - amusingly Denuvo claim that "there was no outage related to its servers at this time"
The thing we can take away from this is Denuvo sucks, and it's just better to play the damn thing via Yuzu or Ryujinx.

Related, we now see that it is confirmed that Homeworld 3 will release with Denuvo. The only good news is that Gearbox is one of the few publishers who remove Denuvo. So...just wait for this one.

And Star Wars Battlefront (2015) regarded by most to be 'uncrackable' due to its online only nature has been cracked by the new-to-the-scene-but-kicking-bum-and-cracking-older-games Delusional - which is amazing. You can play offline. I've noticed KaOs has their repack up for it now.

Just...interesting and useful:
This video guide via YouTuber 'MonroeWorld' shows you how to SSHFS - mount your Steam Deck as a Windows drive.
"Access your Deck's storage using whatever file manager or tools you want ON AND FROM Windows. In a few minutes, you can copy roms, access compatdata, backup/restore save files and more without ever leaving the comfort of Windows. In about ten minutes, you will have your common Steam Deck locations mounted as drive letters in Windows - accessing them just like any other Windows drive"
Here is a github link for a GUI for the sshfs manager
Even better u/ReplacementFun53 has a full written guide on how to do so here!!! - 100% what you should be checking out, it's perfect!

FitGirl:
Has a new section on her page (remember, always use the official site, not one of the dodgy rip-offs) Updates now have their own sub-section on her page for games which have, you guessed it, been recently updated - called Updates Digest. Super handy! I love seeing these kind of incremental UX updates, yay!

Hydra Launcher:
Hydra is an open-source launcher released in the last few weeks by the Brazilian community. Being able to download and launch games from fitgirl and dodi - it has/is a torrent client, automatically applies metadata for games, emulators and roms; seems to hope to be an all-in-one piracy portal. Personally, I prefer to manually add games from trusted links myself. But I'm paranoid. At least it is interesting.

Hydra is a free open game launcher focused on being 100% safe, self-sufficient, ad-free, without registration, without subscription and without waiting times.
Hydra combines games from platforms like Steam and Epic Games with trackers from repackers/crackers known and trusted by the pirate gaming community (such as Fitgirl, Dodi and KaOsKrew.
The game downloads are done directly through the platform, as we have our own private torrent protocol.
Hydra currently has the capability to search among a list of more than 13,000 repacks posted in secure places on the internet, but not limited to that. being self-sufficient, Hydra can navigate the trackers not only looking for updates of games that are already registered but also for games that have just been released.

Lastly the AMA with Dodi:
Well and truly locked in for the 16th. I have a post pinned at the top of PiratedGames, and have just reached out to the mods of Piracy about posting in their sub letting the users know what is happening. I also just posted in his discord server (at his behest). The only thing yet to be determined will be the exact time, for Americans it may be the 15th (your time), but...time-zones fry my brain so I don't know. Really excited about having him come by, the repacker scene is fascinating to me, so I can't wait to hear what he says.

Guides?
I'm working on one lil guide since its been awhile since my last. Most probably will post after the aforementioned AMA.

Lastly?
Thanks to all of you, we're nearing 17k members here and you're all super lovely. This is such a strange sub-reddit because everyone is so damned nice. I just wanted to thank you all for being here, it makes it so nice.
If you wanted to show off your Deck's home screen - then this post a couple days ago is where you can do it!

Thanks, all <3

Compromise
First Prev
“Alright, so uh...” Alex picked the last larva out of the bowl and ate it. A burst of umami and the unexpected taste of alcohol. Now that it had soaked up some of the spice from the broth, it was pretty good. Not particularly flavorful, but a better eating experience than he would expect from a grub. “Why did Eleya put two towns into a warship?”
“I do not know.” Carbon was less fussy about the variety of ingredients presented, eating without playing favorites. It was what she’d picked out when pressed to recommend something for him, and the speed of the devastation she was enacting on what had been a bowl nearly filled to the brim said that it was actually a personal favorite. “I had heard some suggesting converting retired Naval ships into housing, using a decommissioned carrier as a space station once it could be towed into a proper location. Swapping out launch bays for community towers is not a long bridge.”
“That seems...” It seemed desperate. But given what he’d seen, desperate was where they had been in the weeks following the disaster. Where they still were, even if things were improving.
Were things improving?
“Born out of desperation, yes.” She closed her eyes for a moment. “We did not have many colonies, we had not built so many stations. We only kept old ships for parts as another means of efficiency in our fleets. There had been hundreds of thousands in transit all over the Empire at the time. On their way home, on their way to relieve others who now no longer had a home to return to.”
“Yeah, that-” He shifted some of the shredded cabbage-potato around his bowl, trying to figure out what to say. The ‘that sucks’ he had stopped himself from blurting out felt offensively inadequate. “That does present a huge challenge. Did they end up bringing ships online for that?”
“Oh, we did everything. Any idea that was not completely untenable got the blue light. Repurposing ships, building sealed micro-arcologies on less habitable planets, mining out sufficiently large asteroids, asking the Confederation for help. I saw one proposal that suggested an inflatable space station. I thought it was a completely deranged idea.” She paused and picked up the bowl, slurping out some of the broth. “Then Humans arrive to bring aid, and do you know what the first structure they brought with them was?”
“An inflatable space station.” He saw that coming. Everyone - well, everyone who was sufficiently interested in space ships - would recognize the Redoubt class from that description alone. The very definition of form following function, each ship was little more than a central cylinder with hard points for a dozen habitat modules, and engines bolted to one end. Light, fast, cheap. Once deployed, you had a small space station that could be packed up when you were done. Old technology, sure, but they were everywhere, and the configuration options were extensive.
“Exactly. Forgive me, but I laughed. I knew the intent was to help, but having seen that proposal just weeks before...” She smiled and laughed despite having just apologized for such a thing.
“No I get it, it’s a goofy looking ship.” He could see the humor in the situation as well. Having gone from ‘this is too dangerous’ to ‘of course the Humans brought one’ was pretty funny. It put a smirk on his face and got him close to laughing along with her. “Probably used it as a command post until something heavier arrived. Kind of the primary use case for those in Search and Rescue, which is what I think the aid mission was first considered.”
“I was not involved with that aspect of recovery operations, but it stands to reason.” She set her utensils aside in a very specific way, sliding the bowl towards the end of the table. “I cannot tell you why they put all these people here. My first guess would be that it was a somewhat straightforward swap. The bays are very securely attached to the structure, but they are intended to be removed and replaced. It would be important that Eleya use her ship as a proof of concept.”
“Royals lead?” Seemed the logical jump.
Carbon nodded. “The Sword is recognized as her flagship. It is named after her. The Stronghold is based heavily on the Imperial Palace in Ama’o - may it rest. Taking in civilians, thousands of them, is hard proof that she is not simply hiding in here. Having the senate on board also brings with it the need for support staff, creating a symbiotic relationship. It is... a good compromise.”
“Okay, wait. How is The Sword of the Morning Light named after Eleya?” That legitimately confused him. “All I know is the -ya suffix is feminine.”
“Another name mauled by your automatic translation, though this time it is a portion of the Empress’ full formal titles.” She gave him a pointed look, a little smirk hiding on the side of her muzzle. “The strictest translation would be ‘the sword that is used to cut back the night,’ but that is even worse. If I were doing translations and feeling poetic, perhaps I would call it Dawnsword. It would convey the meaning of the name well enough, I think, without being verbose.”
“Then why do you call it the Sword like we do?” He figured just using the actual Tsla name would be easy enough if Dawnsword was a better translation.
“When in Rome.” Carbon snickered. “The Confederate systems I was working with before leaving for the Haultain were not set up to handle Tsla, and none of the Humans I spoke to recognized the name when I said it, so it became a force of habit.”
“Ah, that’d do it.” He’d ask about the actual name another time - it being one of Eleya’s titles felt like a natural transition to learning the rest of her titles, and he didn’t give a single damn about doing that right now.
“Alright, Eleya needs places to put people, and a place to put a temporary capital until the new location can be properly sorted. Two birds with one stone, I suppose. Wouldn’t staying at Schoen be more of the... leader thing to do?”
“If she were to stay here beyond the end of this endeavor, perhaps so. For now, having this ship - and its civilians - as a base of operations, in what even we consider to be one of the most secure solar systems, is reasonable. Most governing at that level has been done remotely since before the disaster, so it doesn’t impede anything.” She paused to sip her tea. “No one needs a senator to be on site anyway. Their presence traditionally just interferes with real work.”
That did get a laugh out of Alex. “The more things change.”
“The more they stay the same, yes?” She said with a grin.
“It is so. All right, mystery of the Dawnsword’s surprise towns is put to rest.” He stopped talking as Haraya came out of the woodwork to remove Carbon’s dishes, bustling away with even less stiffness than before. Why did he feel like he was forgetting something? “Heck. Did... Did anyone tell you we have an appointment to see a designer about our uh, our insignia?”
“No, but my communicator has been going off like I am being told something like that.” Carbon laughed and leaned back into her chair, fishing the slim black device from her jacket, the screen coming on.
Alex was not intentionally staring at his wife’s abdomen as he pushed the bowl away and set his chopsticks out like she had done. “Zenshen said it was this afternoon.”
“Mmh, afternoon. Another curious translation.” She teased him gently, flicking items off her screen one by one. “Neya says it is with Aetena Lyshen, at three. He has stated that his schedule is open today, and we may come in earlier if we so desire. Oh. How unexpected.”
Three o'clock, Tsla’o time, was probably like a solid five or six hours away. Plenty of time to have a deeply personal conversation about what Neya had told him. Or, perhaps, just go talk to the guy sooner. It wasn’t like he was putting it off... but he was putting it off for now. “What’s up?”
“Neya contacted the Colonel to make sure that Zenshen was attached to your detail properly - it turns out she was. You are both already on the artifact project, so it was just a slight shift of duties. The Empress went through appropriate channels, and Lehnan agrees with her decision.” She glanced up at him as she processed that. “I did not expect it to be so proper.”
“She is trying to turn over a new leaf, at least as far as you are concerned. Ensuring I have the help to not fuck things up, and doing it properly, could be a part of that.” He managed to make it sound like a statement, even though it was very much a question. Did his insistence that Eleya needed to start following through on her words actually sink in?
“It is possible. She will need to do more than fill out a little paperwork to prove herself.”
“Yeah, obviously. It’s just that you seemed surprised, so I was left with the impression that was unusual.”
Carbon stared down at the phone in her hands. “I do not know. From what I have seen, she will normally adhere to formal channels. But in the past, when it has come to dealings with me, she has not. Relied on her word being law to make things happen.”
Like making it legal to marry a Human. Changed who knows how much legal history with a stroke of a pen, to unfold some new machinations. “Zenshen made it sound like she was mostly there to act as a buffer between me and the military, keep me from offending anyone. Which strikes me as Eleya looking after her investment.”
“That is a reasonable assumption. I fear she has more intent sunk into you than we can see, so...” She also stopped talking when their waitress returned for Alex’s dishes, giving the young woman a warm smile. “Perhaps it really is.”
Alex, being privy to at least one plan that Carbon was unaware of, instantly did not want to comment on that. “Like you say, it lies with her to prove... herself good.”
“So it does.” Carbon smiled at his butchering of their turn of phrase before glancing down at her communicator again. “All right. Do you have any further plans for this morning?”
“Not a one. Want to push up the meeting with Lyshen? For that matter, do we have any plans tonight?”
“I do want to get that done. Designers can be particular. Best to get started sooner, and also have a meal that we can excuse ourselves for without appearing rude.” She smirked, displaying a little bit of the knowledge she had accumulated growing up in an elevated class, and started tapping away at the screen with both thumbs. “As for this evening, nothing that Neya has made me aware of.”
“Sounds good to me.” Left the evening open to actually have a sit down with Neya, perfect. “Oh shit, that reminds me. Neya wants us to bring her breakfast.”
“Does she. Very upset about not being able to come along?” The tone she had said that Carbon was familiar with Neya pretending to be put out by that, as did the barely hidden smile and tiny little snort of a laugh.
“Absolutely heartbroken.” He played along. “I had to promise that we’d get her something this morning and that you’d make breakfast again tomorrow.”
“Mh. We will see who is making breakfast when the time comes, but I will have something sent to her and we will proceed to our appointment.” She flipped through the applications on her phone and started typing something else out. “There.”
Carbon slipped the slim black screen back into her jacket and stood, stretching a little bit before walking over to the end of the bar, Haraya hustling out to meet them with a small device like the one Carbon had used to pay in the other little restaurant. She set her palm down on it, it processed for a moment and played a happy little tune.
“Thank you both, it was an honor to serve you.” Haraya bowed again now that the transaction was done.
“You did well, thank you.” Carbon said it in Tsla as she returned the bow, glancing over at Alex to ensure he was doing the same thing.
Sa meha.” He was. Paying attention to what Carbon was doing was getting him pretty far, as was having memorized how to say ‘thank you’ in Tsla.
They turned to leave, but Haraya spoke again before they could take a step. Quiet, and very timid. “May I ask you a question?”
Carbon didn’t even think about it as she looked back. “Of course.”
“I was mostly asking the prince, I am very sorry.” She looked just this side of terrified to be correcting a Royal.
“Oh yeah, shoot.” Alex caught himself speaking in English way too late. He pursed his lips and inhaled, just barely preventing himself from rolling his eyes at that little faux pas. Based on what Carbon had said about Haraya getting her information about how nobles work from movies, she would have interpreted that as aimed at her. He queued up a very quick reply. “Please do.
“After you left, last night.” She glanced over at the bartender, who was not paying them any attention at all. “Adana kept saying a strange word, I assume it to be Human - untranslatable.”
The irony of the translator not being able to digest something in English was not lost on Alex. What had he said to the kid?
Carbon, meanwhile, thought it was hilarious. “It is actually two words, a phrase. Oh, busted. In this case I believe it means that he got caught doing something he should not have been doing.” She laughed, looking up at Alex with a grin.
Haraya’s relief at how this turned out was immediately visible. She was still tense, but didn’t look like she might have just caught an execution. “Adana likes to play with the door controls. They beep and flash, and he can activate the viewscreen... And open the door. That is what he was doing when he found the prince in the hallway, when he should have been in bed. It is not an offensive term?”
Et.” Alex shook his head no. Score another point for knowing the basics.
“It is as he says. A harmless statement.” Carbon picked up the slack from Alex trying not to advertise that he spoke their language yet. She looked over to him again. “Perhaps used to tease a friend when they get caught out?”
He nodded as sagely as he could, a smirk barely suppressed as he caught that shade she was directing at him.
“His mother will be so glad. She has been concerned it was some kind of swearing, or something worse. I told her that the prince had been kind in my interaction with him, but she was-” Haraya exhaled sharply, wide brown eyes darting between them with a hint of that fear creeping back in. “She was afraid despite that.”
“Ah. If that does not settle her, please get in contact with me.” She pulled her communicator out, swiping along the screen for a moment and holding it out to the young woman. “We can arrange a meeting to clear anything up.”
She looked down at a swirling orange circle on Carbon’s phone, “I am not allowed to carry my- May I get it?”
“Of course.” Carbon smiled.
Alex lowered his voice as Haraya hustled away. “You sure giving her your number is a good idea?”
“No. But she is earnest and correct in her assessment of you.” She shook her head, her words quiet and sharp. “That boy learned a simple phrase, and his mother thinks it is a curse? I know why she did. I have met my own people. I think a gentle nudge may be in order to prevent it from being passed along.”
“When you say gentle nudge...”
She held a hand out to ease his concern. “I was thinking tea.”
Haraya returned, phone in hand and followed by an older, grumpy looking male dressed in the same natural fiber clothes save for a vibrant red scarf around his neck, voice raised as he tried to keep up with the excited teen. “You may not use your-”
Akai.” Alex gave what he assumed was a manager a needlessly cheery greeting with a little wave of his fingers. Oh man, he had loved being a shit to managers when he was younger, particularly if they were on a power trip. The opportunity hadn’t presented itself recently, and the urge to abuse the power that he allegedly had now was so tempting.
“Floor boss!” Carbon was a step ahead of him, greeting the gray male in their own language loud enough to draw his attention away from their waitress. “What is it that I may not use?”
Alex’s translator sat unused for several seconds as the sounds that guy made never made it past shocked guttural noises, the realization of who he’d been yelling in the general direction of sinking in. Haraya was too busy getting Carbon’s contact information to notice, or might have just been ignoring this exchange as hard as the bartender was.
“It was- My words- Did not for you.” He held up his hands and backed away.
“Ah, a simple misunderstanding?” Carbon offered him as the phone dinged complete, and she slipped it back into her jacket.
“Yes, of course.” Couldn’t get out of there fast enough.
Haraya bowed again as she hid her communicator, the same black rectangle that Carbon and Alex appeared to have. “Thank you. I hope I will not have to contact you, but that you have offered...”
“The prince has shown me who he is, what is in his heart... It will not do to have anyone doubting his character.” Carbon smiled and returned the bow.
Alex followed suit.
The fear in her eyes was gone, and if anything there was a little bit of admiration in there now as she thanked them again, quietly, before running off to whatever her next duty was.
They left the same way they had come in, through the main dining area. The crowd had shifted, some groups gone, new ones in their place. Conversations to fill boredom, meals he didn’t recognize being consumed at every pace conceivable. Once again, he was pretty sure this was his kind of joint.
It only took the gentlest of questions to get Carbon talking about what she’d been doing all morning as they walked back to the tram, riding all the way to the stop closest to the bow this time. Alex was only slightly familiar about what she was talking about - had something to do with preventative maintenance checks on one of the shuttles. It was interesting to find out they had developed a very similar system to what he was used to, checking in on functionality after so many hours of use.
He didn’t understand the majority of what she was describing, but he enjoyed listening to her talk about things with such enthusiasm.
Lyshen’s office was easily the furthest forward he had been on the ship yet. Took the elevator up to deck 20 and then just walked towards the bow for another five minutes. He must have been as close as one could get to the plate armor and whatever buffer they put between it and the habitable areas. It seemed almost entirely unused - he was sure some of the bulkheads had dust on them.
For Alex, there were two potential reasons for this. Aetena Lyshen preferred the solitude of the area. It was actually very quiet, even compared to the hall in front of their cabin. Or, he had pissed someone off and gotten banished to a spot as far away as possible.
Whichever option, Lyshen had put some work into his workspace. The door was ringed in a delicate gold filigree, a lacework of glittering geometric shapes with his name and title contained in a small banner above the door. They were meeting with a Royal Artisan.
Carbon tapped the door controls and it slides open almost instantly. The young woman with light red fur inside is dressed nearly as formally as they had been last night, though in muted grays. She bows. Not too deep. “Welcome, the Chief Artisan is preparing for your arrival. It should be just a few minutes.”
Chief Artisan. Well. Alex shot Carbon a sidelong glance as the receptionist turned and they followed her through a waiting room. A simple rectangular area, with a few upholstered chairs and benches scattered around. It was the most Human looking area he’d been in so far.
The far wall caught his eye as they walked through, windows looking into a workshop. Alex walked over, the large floor beyond housing a dozen or so Tsla’o, all seated at desks or workbenches, engrossed in whatever they were working on. Almost to the last, they were using hand tools.
Alex had never really seen craftsmen up close, doing their thing. In movies, or videos, sure. But not right here a few steps away, carefully engraving some sort of... Breastplate? Cuirass? Big chunk of metal that looked like it went over the chest.
“I believe that is yours.” Carbon stepped up next to him, a smirk in her voice as she leaned against his shoulder. “To go with your gauntlets, and the rest of the armor that is no doubt being fabricated.”
“What makes you say that?” How could she pick that up from looking at it for, what, three or four seconds?
“Consider the size.” She nodded at it, the artist working on it laying out a star near the shoulder. “Who else would wear such a piece?”
“Huh.” Compared to the guy who was doing the work, it wasn’t exactly massive, but he would need a lot of padding to wear that. This raised a few questions for him about the ethics of receiving such gifts. But he wasn’t a politician... Not as far as the Confederation was concerned. “I guess it is.”
They stood in silence and watched work progress. A woman in the back was carving something, perhaps a chair leg. One guy in the corner making hinges with an induction forge and a tiny, specialized anvil.
Before long, the secretary approached them again. “The Chief Artisan is prepared for you now. Please.” She gestured to the only door that went somewhere other than the corridor.
The Chief Artisan was sitting behind his desk, wearing an outfit similar to his receptionist, pale green eyes switching back and forth between two screens. The primary one was built into the desk, and had been jury rigged to a Human made laptop that sat on top of it, a rat’s nest of cables connecting the two. There was a holoprojector built into the desk, a jumble of images floating over it. He waved them in and gestured to the chairs across from him, “Please, sit.”
Alex was quick to oblige, glad to be just some guy for the moment. Carbon didn’t seem to mind either, taking the seat beside him without a word. Aetena was the first green Tsla’o Alex had seen, sort of a dark forest green with jade stripes visible on his neck. Apparently a bit of a rarity given how often he saw the other colors on the ship.
“I am sorry to keep you waiting, the connection to your Solanet has gone down. Despite that, I believe I have enough saved locally to begin the process.” Lyshen trailed off, lost between the two displays before closing a dozen images from the holo. He picked a pen up from the table and arranged the remaining pictures neatly, four different coats of arms that claimed to belong to a Sorenson. The red enamel barrel blurred into an arc as he spun the pen in his fingers, voice picking up speed as he locked on to Alex. “There is a large amount of heraldry available for your surname, do you know which coat of arms belongs to your particular family?”
There was a deer, a deer head, a rearing horse and a weird shaped star. Maybe it was a flower, or a drip of paint. They were all surrounded by leaves and the occasional knight’s helmet. Alex wasn’t sure what any of it meant and up until now, he’d never even thought about it. Knights and damsels in distress had never really been his thing. “Uh, can’t say that I do, no.”
“Mmh. What geographic region does your lineage trace back to? I could find no significant references to the Berkley Soresons on your Solanet.” He leaned back and the pen continued to trace crimson circles in his hand.
“The name comes from Europe, but the last couple of generations have lived in California, and America before that for who knows how long... We’re from a little bit of everywhere.” It was an inside joke with the family, which had ties back into nearly every corner of the globe at this point. Now they had a relative from somewhere way off the globe as well.
That puzzled Aetena, ears flicking as he turned back to the Human screen and picked over the keyboard slowly. He didn’t like what he found. “All of these originate from the continent of Europe. Do you happen to know which country?”
“No, I’m not sure. Had an uncle do the family tree thing once, but between the civil wars and The Collapse, the lineage got spotty about a hundred years ago.” Alex wasn’t really into the whole ancestry thing once you got outside of living relatives. It was novel, sure, but right now all he really wanted to do was ask if he could borrow that Solanet access when it came back up. The rest of the ship had access to the Confed’s milnet, which tightly restricted what he could be sending across it - he just wanted to download a couple of movies and some music, but milnet barely overlapped with the wider public network.
Lyshen set his hand down and the pen switched back and forth like a metronome, clicking on his desk at the end of each arc. He closed his eyes for a moment, jaw working silently before he closed the images and started pulling up new ones. “Perhaps we should move on to other aspects of this endeavor. As I have been told that you wish to integrate Tsla’o and Human cultures in your marriage, I had intended to blend the existing Tshalan sigil with some of the Sorenson family heraldry. I thought it would be best to use the gear-star surround from the Princess’ family crest as a base to build from. Something that is immediately familiar to Tsla’o, to put the viewer at ease. As it is indicative of starship commands, exploration and the outer colonies, it will solidly represent both of you and the way you met.”
Alex raised an eyebrow at Carbon, “sound reasonable?” He had no idea if it was or not, but it did sound like it. Also, if they were serious about integrating parts of Tsla’o and Human cultures, they needed to actually get on that.
“Yes. I agree, that would be a good place to start.”
“Thank you.” He busied himself bringing up a few more pictures, rough combinations of the ten point gear-star and the various items from the Sorenson crests, bits of decoration and detail work.
The door chimed behind them and Lyshen stopped with a sharp glare. He eyed the clock and sighed, a whispered curse under his breath before he set his pen down and straightened up. “Come.”
There was a soldier partially concealed behind the door, the rank plate on his uniform loaded with details, not that Alex could read them yet. He swept the room with a rifle as he entered, the short barrel ending up pointed just a hair under Alex’s sternum. A pair of soldiers took up positions on either side of the door and covered him, a few more lined up in the waiting room.
When he spoke, it was crisp and authoritative. “Please back away from the Human.”

Hi, does anyone know if EndNote or Zotero can be used for bluebook citations ? If not, is there something out there that can automatically generate the citation?
Thanks!

2024.05.12 18:09 Swan_Z Ex-Swans in the playoffs

Today was the first leg of the playoffs for the 23/24 season and I was interested to see how many ex-Swansea players were on the team sheets for the playoff teams.
Turns out, there's quite a few! We've been a 'selling' club for quite a while now, with our board opting to adopt the "Player Trading" model. In turn, we've managed to get large sums for players we've brought in for relatively cheap. Unfortunately, this means that our best players tend to leave every season whilst the board scramble to try and find the next best thing. Of course, this has been very frustrating and very risky as we've seen with some of the duds we've signed as replacements over the course of our championship tenure.
I'll go through the 4 teams in the Playoff race:
Norwich - (0) they didn't have any ex-Swansea players on their team sheet today! However, they were the bottom seed in the playoffs. Could this mean that the less ex-Swansea players in the team = the worse the team is\ citation needed*
West Brom - (1) West Brom with a sole ex-swan in Kyle Bartley who also happens to be their captain.
Kyle Bartley was with the Swans for 6 years spanning 2012-2018 having gone on a few loan spells in between. Sadly, Kyle's stint came to an end in the summer of 2018 as the Swans were relegated from the premier league transferring to West Brom for a reported fee of around £4m (according to Transfermarkt) He has since gone on to be named captain and achieved promotion with West Brom to the Premier League. With a single stint in the prem the found themselves relegated back to the Championship! With West Brom only having 1 ex-Swansea player, they found themselves with 75 points and 3rd seed in the playoff push.
Southampton - (2) Ryan Manning and Flynne Downes - they also have our ex-manager Russel Martin!
Ryan Manning was bought from QPR for roughly £250k (according to Transfermarkt) in 2020, and although he made a few appearances under then manager Steve Cooper it wasn't until the 2021/22 season where Manning's role truly flourished under Russel Martin. Manning was slowly becoming a fan favourite and some would consider him to be first name on the team sheet in Martin's second season. Unfortunately, like Martin, Manning ended up leaving the team in the summer of 2023 joining Martin to Southampton. Sadly, although Manning was offered numerous contract extensions, he decided to decline opting to leave for free. One would think that had he of signed a contract extension, Swansea would have received a hefty transfer fee for him.
Flynne Downes on the other hand was bought for around 1.5m from Ipswich and was a top priority transfer for Russel Martin. We quickly saw that Flynne Downes had extraordinary ability wowing in his single season for the Swans. However, an offer from West Ham for upwards of £10m was too good to say no and Flynne Downes left in the summer of 2022. Flynne Downes managed to wrack up 35 appearances for West Ham before reuniting with Russel Martin in Southampton this season and has heavily featured in Martin's plans this year.
Southampton have had somewhat of a hot and cold season, looking incredible in some games but fragile in others, finishing the season strongly with 87 points and finding themselves 2nd seed in the championship playoffs. Although Southampton have spent a fair sum of money this season, their fans will be disappointed to not have gone up automatically.
Leeds - (4) Joe Rodon, Joel Piroe, Daniel James and Connor Roberts. Narrowly missing out on automatic promotion, Leeds with 4 ex-Swansea players in their team sheet.
Joe Rodon, a Swansea youth product spending 15 years in the tier system and finally breaking out into the first team under Graham Potter in Swansea's return to the Championship. Rodon started playing consistently under Potter and featured under Cooper but left at the start of the 2020/2021 season with Tottenham splashing close to £12m for the young Welshman. Mourinho definitely considered him one for the future but with the change of management in Tottenham, Rodon fell out of favour and ended up going on loan to Stade Rennais and then this season has gone out on loan to Leeds and has been prominent in Leeds' back line featuring 43 times this season.
Joel Piroe - having been Swansea's top goal scorer the last two seasons, it's no surprise that another team would be after his services. having joined from PSV for around 1m, Joel Piroe showed his prowess with excellent finishing in his two seasons with the Swans netting a sweet 46 goals in 96 appearances. There were rumours of a premier league switch last summer but they came to nothing and ended up with Joel leaving the Swans to go to newly relegated Leeds for around £13m. Unfortunately, Joel hasn't had the start he would have hoped for with Leeds and has struggled for consistent game time under Daniel Farke and hasn't reached the heights of his two previous seasons but there is still hope for Joel.
Daniel James, oh my sweet boy Dan James! Having joined for free from Hull in 2016, Dan James made an appearance in a cup game while we were still in the premier league but didn't get his break out until we were relegated to the Championship. Unfortunately, we would only get 1 season out of Dan James but after a breakout year, he caught the attention of a LOT of teams. With a transfer seemingly done with Leeds, Huw Jenkins pulled the plug thinking we could get a lot more for him (turns out we could) and Dan James was sold to Man United for around £15m. Dan James would see quite a lot of game time under Solskjaer in his first season at Old Trafford but his appearances would start to dwindle until Leeds finally got their man in 2021 for a reported fee of around £27m. He featured quite a bit for Leeds but then went out on loan to Fulham last season (not entirely sure what happened for this random move) Leeds were then relegated. He's now back at Leeds this season and has played a vital role in their push for promotion having featured 40 times in the league and scoring 13 goals.
Connor Roberts (this one still hurts) came up from the youth ranks in Swansea having been with the club from 2004. He started making appearances in the Premier League the season we were relegated but got his true breakout season under Graham Potter in our first season back in the Championship. the Welsh Cafu featured heavily in his three seasons in the championship with the Swans just missing out on promotion twice under Steve Cooper with heartache in the playoffs against Brentford. Sadly, Roberts' time at the club came to an end in the summer of 2021 moving to premier league outfit Burnley for around £2.5m which I would consider absolutely criminally undervalued. In his first season with Burnley, Burnley found themselves relegated back to the Championship but with no surprise, he would only spend 1 season in the championship and then gaining promotion with Burnley, winning the league under Vincent Kompany. oddly, Roberts was sent on loan to Leeds in the winter transfer window, when Burnley were struggling in the premier league and eventually being relegated. Roberts hasn't had much of an impact at Leeds but has most certainly strengthened the squad depth for Farke. Either way, unless he gets a move away from Burnley, he will be back in the Championship next season.
Leeds were unfortunate to not gain automatic promotion, finishing the season with a record breaking 90 points the highest point tally to not get automatic promotion. Their shaky start to the season and flaky end to the season has cost them. Their fans of course will be frustrated by the miracles Keiran McKenna has pulled off with Ipswich. Despite that, they find themselves 1st seed for the playoffs and some would consider them the favourites to win at Wembley although their recent form suggests that they may struggle to get over the line.
Conclusion
It's clear to see that we've let some really good players go since we we've been relegated to the Championship and often enough, our best players have ended up in promotion chasing teams. There's no surprise really that good players will end up in the better teams. It's just a shame that most of these players only saw a few seasons of consistent play in our championship tenure. One could only dream to have seen these players play together. The way our club operates though is through these big money moves and it's currently hard to see who the next player that will leave for that big sum will be.

2024.05.12 16:15 PoisonedWhispers [Part 2] An analysis of the behaviour that leads to misinformation on the subreddit and in general; methods to curb this; and other malarkey.

The Short Version can be found here.

Part 1 can be found here.

Example 5 - There's more to a BBC YouTube title

Returning to this dastardly subreddit, for my next example, points 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 are relevant. OP provided a screenshot of a BBC YouTube title, stating: "Israeli hit squad dressed as doctors kill Palestinians in hospital." Per point 2, by failing to immediately link to the video, or immediately mention what the video contains, folk could come away with the conclusion that the BBC never reports that these were militants. In other words, some might believe that the misreporting here extends past the video title, when it does not, and this could be avoided by providing salient details sooner rather than later. This submission was made during the temporary ban, and I thought it was interesting enough as a case study to come back to.

Example 6 - Oxfam's full position

For this submission/meme, points 1, 2, and 6 are relevant. I saw that we weren’t going to get good-faith engagement with the entirety of Oxfam’s position here on why they initially opposed airdrops, and I attempted to outline the full extent of their views so that it can be critiqued appropriately. This meme is not too dissimilar from some Twitter leftist fixating on one short clip of Destiny during one of his heated gamer moments; his actual positions aren’t being engaged with, and it’s intellectually dull. There’s more to Destiny’s positions than a twenty-second clip; there’s more to Oxfam’s position than the one tweet. The fact of the matter is that there’s a long series of tweets here, and while the tweet OP chose to highlight is risible, is dumb, and is insufferable, we are more than capable on this subreddit in being more nuanced and fair when it comes to our criticism.
As I highlight, there were some concerns here that were not entirely unreasonable. At the time of my comment, there weren’t yet any reports on injuries due to airdrops. These reports appeared in the following days and weeks, where Gazans were killed when a parachute in an airdrop failed to deploy, and some drowned in their attempts to retrieve parcels that landed in the sea. Retrospectively, I wouldn't say that aid should not have been airdropped merely because it would result in these deaths, but a fair assessment of Oxfam here at the time should have taken these concerns into account.
Oxfam’s associate director also endorses a Twitter thread where some prescriptions are given on how ought this aid delivery be facilitated. He recommends that the Gaza port be reopened, and to open more crossings. The Biden administration recognized that airdrops would not sufficiently alleviate the problem of being unable to get sufficient quantities of aid distributed, and while the port was not reopened, Biden did announce that a temporary port would be built. Further, Israel approved the reopening of the Erez crossing.
The misinformation in OP’s post stems from the fact that folk will be disinterested in reading the twitter thread or any additional threads where they might have elaborated on views. Out of the thousands that interact with the post, a significant chunk will come away with the incorrect belief that Oxfam’s opposition to airdrops was merely due to what was stated in the meme. That is misinformation being propagated — not the most egregious, Hamas-esqe level of misinformation in the world, but misinformation nonetheless.

Example 7 - NYT: Bananas, or Cool as a Cucumber?

For our final example points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are relevant; it’s the whole shebang. To give a quick recounting here, Hobbitfollower isn’t the only masochist that might, occasionally, choose to exclusively sort by new. When I saw the submission, I read the article, and I was a bit annoyed that the Jerusalem Post article doesn’t even link to the mission report that I was interested in reading. I searched for it, posted a link to the report in the very first comment of the thread as surely my fellow dggas would also like to read the report, and then I, well, read the report.
When I returned back to the thread, I quoted favourably from the mission report to support another individual's comment. (I would again quote from it in another thread the next day to highlight why Israel struggled to acquire forensic evidence.)
But as I scrolled down the thread I came across the subject of our example; 50 upvotes, no article linked, and clearly a charged comment. Consider the steps involved to truly engage with this comment; one would need to:
  • Click and read the article.
  • Search for the mission report.
  • Read the mission report (as some folk probably won’t wanna read 20 pages right off the bat).
  • Search for the NYT article; bypass the paywall (which is trivially easy nowadays but is still a barrier, and people are lazy); and read the article.
This is a very charged thread: there are going to be a large group of pro-Israel folk browsing this thread, frustrated and irate as bad memories are invoked of all the times they’ve had to deal with or seen pro-Hamas folk engaging in rape denialism. In much the same way a leftist sub is not going to be interested in a dispassionate analysis of an Israeli strike with high civilian collateral damage, this sub — at times — will struggle to calmly assess the subject matter. An expected behaviour isn’t necessarily the correct behaviour — the actions we believe one ought to take.
When a misleading tweet goes viral, the damage has already been done, as a considerable amount of people won’t see the subsequent Community Notes that might be slapped on it. Likewise, some of the thousands who see OP’s highly upvoted comment will think, “Oh, this has a lot of upvotes, I guess it must be true. How horrible of the NYT to frame this as a both sides issue”, and thus misinformation has spread. This incorrect belief will mold their perceptions of the NYT. When they encounter more reporting by the NYT on I-P in the future, they might even think back to this moment: “Ah, I remember when these bozos tried to say that the Israeli accusations were the same as the Palestinian accusations.”
I also referred to OP’s comment as disinformation. In every example discussed so far, I don't assume malicious intent. I just begin with the foundation that a mistake was made, and I don’t enmesh myself by throwing out accusations of lying. In this case, however, OP has indirectly acknowledged that I was correct, but they still haven’t bothered to edit their original comment. Once again, this comment is a really good example of point 1. I obviously also disagree with their conclusion, and the process by which they’re arriving at their conclusion is still very flawed — and other people are simply going to adopt their conclusion while not even attempting to reach there by their own independent assessment. If you see someone quote from an article, and they don’t even link it, and the comment is very charged, I would encourage y’all to seek out the article yourself; you may come away with a different interpretation.
I'm sure you've seen this meme before: "I'm just waiting for Destiny to comment on this so that I know what to think 😎." We meme about it, but there is, of course, an undercurrent of truth here, as we have confidence in Destiny's ability to research, and thus we feel comfortable adopting his beliefs and opinions. It's nice not having to do the research ourselves. Lazy fucks.
This applies to Reddit comments you see as well. Don't just adopt the conclusion of someone else because their beliefs align with yours and they're speaking with authority. Do the legwork yourself; be mindful of The Six Points; and you might find that someone on your own side is actually spreading misinformation, or is espousing an opinion that you disagree with.

Purgatory

I was perma-banned some time after my previous comment for a comment I made in a different thread. Before I get to that in the next fuck-me-who-knows-how-I'm-gonna-write-that-I'm-so-fucked section, I did want to bring up two final examples.

Example A - Haaretz and Amputations

For Example A, points 1, 3, 4, and 5 are relevant. Obviously, I can’t attempt point 6 because I was banned. Now, I actually agree with OP as I share their skepticism towards the notion that these amputations are “routine”, but referring to the article as a "fake story" is too strong, and, as always, their process here is flawed. The claims they make here about the Haaretz article and CNN article are misleading, but it is immediately upvoted because it feels right, particularly because the first reply just poisons the well. Haaretz did not speak to an anonymous person, they are reporting on a letter they have seen written by a doctor and sent to senior Israeli officials; the doctor did not justify the claim that the event is routine based on having seen only two amputations, that's merely the amputations they saw in the week they wrote the letter (but the phrasing here is ambiguous, as the doctor could be referring to the handcuff injuries as being the "routine" event); and the IDF did not confirm or deny all the claims, but gave a fairly standard, boilerplate response instead. The misleading claims in this comment was eventually addressed — and, as I’m sure you’re irritated by the repetition by now, the goal of this post is to turn this “eventually” into an “immediately.”

Example B - Wikipedia and Devious Editing

For Example B, points 1 and 5 are relevant. I want to be very careful with this one as I don't want to be misconstrued. Similar to the previous example, I mostly agree with their conclusion that these Wikipedia pages can be very flawed, and partisan editors can tarnish the objectivity that we wish could be maintained across all articles. However, you know the drill by now, point 1. There’s much to be said about the infamous “24-hour window” debacle, and I made a submission a while ago on this. I think there are parts of this story that both the pro-Palestine and pro-Israel crowd get wrong — but the latter is generally more correct, and I would agree with OP here that the information here is, at the very least, incomplete.
However, per point 5, the articles they are critiquing are not linked. How many people here actually sought out the two articles referenced here? As I’ve already demonstrated, we know how many misleading or false claims you can get away with before they’re finally addressed. A user in that thread made some edits to the contentious lines in question in the Wikipedia article. This was the Wikipedia article at the time OP’s comment was made. OP quotes this section:
Prior to the raids, Israel had called for the more than a million people living in the north half of the Gaza Strip to evacuate during a 24-hour window, while Hamas instructed those residents to stay put.
The two citations here are a Reuters article and a Politico article. The Politico article is arguably redundant, but it’s not being cited because it’s supposed to make a statement about a 24-hour window; it’s being cited to support the statement about Hamas:
Hamas is complicating the situation, urging residents to stay in their homes.
The Reuters article also mentions this:
“We tell the people of northern Gaza and from Gaza City, stay put in your homes, and your places," Eyad Al-Bozom, spokesman for the Hamas Interior Ministry, told a news conference.
Contrary to what OP said, both articles use the word “evacuation” at some point. The first part of the quote from the Wikipedia page is supported by this statement in the Reuters article:
On Friday Israel gave more than a million residents of the northern half of Gaza 24 hours to flee to the south to avoid an onslaught.
In a follow-up comment OP claims that the archived link, which pulled the earliest version of the Reuters article available, does not support the line. This seems to have been an error on the part of whoever chose this hyperlink. When the Wikipedia article first mentions calls for evacuation, this was how the Reuters article cited looked like at the time; regardless of the veracity of the claim, the article did support what the Wikipedia page mentions.
To reiterate, OP is completely correct about this pernicious problem with Wikipedia. It’s just that in this example, I don’t think it qualifies as a case of those darn pro-Palestine editors back at it again. The nuanced position here is pretty difficult to get to, and I don’t think the editors wrote this line in the interest of distorting the truth to serve their own side.
Example B.5: A better yet slightly flawed post on Wikipedia and Euro-Med Monitor
This post about how Hamas supporters are influencing Wikipedia does better in terms of substantiating their claims — but there are issues here that I would have loved to address, and there is a good critique on OP’s prescriptions that was buried at the bottom. Unfortunately, OP has been suspended from Reddit. If you’re reading this mate, call me 🥺.
There are a lot of hyperlinks in OP’s post (lol, sez fucking me), and it’s completely reasonable that someone won’t feel inclined to click every single one; that’s not an expectation I would ever demand. From going through the post, there are several small critiques I would have made (e.g., while I don’t believe the Mondo article should have been cited, OP claims that in the article, “The only people criticizing Wiesel here is the author of the opinion piece.” FWIW, the article does reference and cite a Haaretz article, and a Foreign policy article, both of which levy criticism against Wiesel), but I’m just going to focus on this line:
In fact, it is owned by a man named Ramy Abdu, who is a literal Hamas lobbyist.
If you’re going to call someone a literal Hamas lobbyist, that is definitely a link I’m clicking. What I know about Abdu is simply what I can assume about his beliefs from various tweets I’ve seen by him over the past several months; but I’ve never looked into their background other than being aware of their position at EMM. Upon opening the link I see… a 2013 article about Clare Short. From reading the article, it looks like OP missed some steps in outlining how they arrived at their conclusion, and I saw only a few people inquiring about this. To fill in the steps on what I presume OP wanted to say, from the article they linked:
Moshe Ya’alon, former IDF chief of staff, outlawed the Council for European Palestinian Relations (CEPR) – a Belgian non-profit organisation that lobbies on behalf of the Hamas-led Gaza Government – using emergency defence regulations.
I haven’t looked into CEPR, and they obviously disputed the lobbying charge; I’m just going to take the claim at face-value. In 2011, Abdu was assistant director of the CEPR, and still held a position there for several years. They've since left the organization, but per point 1, if this is how OP arrived at the conclusion that Abdu is a “literal Hamas lobbyist”, I think it could use a bit more work, with additional clarification on what they mean by lobbyist here. I’m sure they can do it, it just happened to not be in this post.
I'm not going to harp on about point 5 here as I only apply that to incidents where a claim is made; one or two articles are linked; and then no one reads them, assuming the claim must be true as long as articles are provided. I would literally never make the prescription that if someone writes an effort-post, we must click every hyperlink to fact-check. I mean, it's not like I would have any other motivation for saying that... sweats profusely 🙄
Just to make one final point on EMM, it is a rubbish outlet, and any time I encounter one of their articles, I roll my eyes knowing I’m going to get some outlandish claim where I can find fuck-all for corroboration from other outlets. However, sometimes there is corroboration, where EMM was the first to notice that the IDF labelled a bicycle as an RPG in the drone footage they published, and then the NYT confirmed the finding (except for the other stupid claim made in the tweet.) But anyways, these moments are astronomically rare.

Example C - A Mysterious Royal Website (What a weaselly little --)

Okay, I lied, one final example as it’s interesting to see how people here parse articles and headlines, but before I address the example, let me talk about Reuters headlines.
Reuters headlines
They’re not always consistent on this front, but I generally like how Reuters writes their headlines. A Reuters headline will often contain the phrase “US says”. [30] [31] [32] What I’m expecting in the article when I see a headline containing this phrase is some official representing the Biden administration outlining what their particular policy, position, belief, etc., is on whatever the subject matter may be, or some action they took which makes it clear what their position is. In the given examples, we have statements from Biden, Blinken, the US military, and so on. Sometimes the US officials remain anonymous, sharing information in private briefings.
If there isn’t an official statement by the US available on a matter, the headline might use the phrase “source says” to talk about ongoing developments. [33] [34] “Reuters will use unnamed sources where necessary when they provide information of market or public interest that is not available on the record. We alone are responsible for the accuracy of such information.” [35]
Relevant to Example C, Reuters uses the same guidelines for “Saudi Arabia says” [36] [37] and “sources say” for information relevant to Saudi Arabia. [38]
Israeli outlets, A royal family website, and Saudi sources: An amusing chain of events
Keeping the previous section in mind, when I came across this version of a Jerusalem Post article posted to this subreddit, you can imagine what I’m expecting here — particularly because this would be momentous news to see Saudi Arabia make a public statement that they helped defend Israel. Instead, we get reporting on what Saudi Arabia’s royal family said on their website, and what a source connected to the Saudi royal family told KAN, another Israeli outlet — and we don’t get links to either of them. If there was no statement on the royal family’s website, this would have been a bad headline to write based on what this source said. Unfortunately for the JP, there is no official website for Saudi Arabia’s royal family. You’ll see in the current version, they remove the reference to that website, and also add the following line:
The Al Arabiya news site said sources had informed it that Saudi Arabia had not participated in the interception of Iranian drones and missiles.
Here’s the article by the Saudi state-owned outlet, which is essentially their mouthpiece to deny the ongoing report. I24news, however, didn’t get the memo:
Saudi Arabia publicly acknowledges role in defending Israel against Iranian attack
While Jordan had openly disclosed its role in the defensive maneuver, Saudi Arabia's acknowledgment came in the form of a summary on its official website
When I first saw the JP submission on this subreddit, I bookmarked it for later to come back to and find the sources, as it’s not the first time I’ve seen dubious reporting from KAN news. I was also curious if anyone in the thread was going to highlight some of the discrepancies in the article, and, well, shoutout to this keen reader! Fact-checking the JP article slipped my mind, but thanks to a comment I saw on another subreddit, they correctly pointed out that the website referenced was not affiliated with the Saudi royal family, and thus the article the JP and other Israeli outlets had presumably read should not have been taken as an official statement. Christ, this is obvious from the very first line:
A source from the Saudi royal family, who prefers anonymity, converses with the Kan public broadcaster. The individual subtly acknowledges Saudi Arabia’s supposed involvement in thwarting Iranian attack drones bound for Israel the previous evening, citing that Saudi Arabian airspace automatically intercepts “any suspicious entity”.
The same figure takes a swing at Iran, accusing them of instigating a conflict in Gaza. This, they suggest, is a deliberate attempt to unravel the progress established towards normalizing relations with Israel, as per Kan’s report.
In the words of the official, as put forth by Kan, “Iran is a nation that endorses terrorism, and the world should have curtailed it much earlier.”
Why would the official Saudi royal website use an anonymous source within the royal family to make their public announcement, and why would they quote what the official said to an Israeli outlet?!
It’s fascinating to see this play out: the supposed source spoke to Kan News; Houseofsaud presumably sees this and makes an article on the Kan segment; the JP sees this article and the segment, poorly reads it, and then cites it and the original Kan segment; outlets like the Daily Wire pick up on the story from the JP; and then on it goes, spreading like wildefire, before the Saudis take note (“oh fuck, oh fuck, where are these reports coming from?”) and disseminate a message denying that any “official” website publicly confirmed their involvement. The Saudis are involved, and they’re keeping tight-lipped about the extent of their involvement.
Just to quote one more line from the i24news article because it’s shockingly poor:
The post subtly hinted at Saudi Arabia's involvement in intercepting suspicious entities in its airspace, highlighting the kingdom's proactive stance in safeguarding regional stability.
This is written based on this line from the HouseofSaud article:
A source from the Saudi royal family, who prefers anonymity, converses with the Kan public broadcaster. The individual subtly acknowledges Saudi Arabia’s supposed involvement in thwarting Iranian attack drones bound for Israel the previous evening, citing that Saudi Arabian airspace automatically intercepts “any suspicious entity”.
It’s the individual/source who is being subtle, not the post itself as i24 news mentions.
Anyways, this is not a case of misinformation by the subreddit. There's nothing wrong with posting a JP article, and this is easily the least offensive Example, but point 5 is nicely relevant here. I thought y'all might find this to be interesting, particularly because some people probably still believe that Saudi Arabia has publicly acknowledged their involvement, and maybe that could be someone reading this section. It's also another example where, because I’m banned, I can’t offer a bit of nuance. stares intently at 4THOT
It’s a shame Destiny didn’t finish reading the article, I’m curious what he would have said. He speculates that the report was from intelligence or monitoring, but moves on before finishing the article; it’s also the updated version of the article, without the tidbit about the Saudi royal family website.

Finito

I'm going to close out this section here. There's always more to include, more examples that demonstrate the aforementioned points, but I'd rather focus on my own comments instead of threads where I was unable to contribute my thoughts. There's been a plethora of discourse here surrounding the campus protests, and maybe those are still ongoing if I manage to post this at a sooner date. For completely legitimate and fair justifications, all of these threads are going to be very charged; and maybe upon reading this post some of y'all might feel more inclined to analyze these situations dispassionately, mindful of cases where the reporting might not be the greatest.

Example D - A Late Fact-check (Still lying, dude!)

I fucking lied again, there’s more. Literally the day after I finished writing the above paragraph, a new example popped up that I can’t resist the temptation to include. Stop giving me material! As I spoke of above, the campus protests have resulted in a charged atmosphere on the subreddit, which means that this post stating that a “Jewish-Israeli family’s restaurant was targeted in a hate crime” is immediately catapulted to the front page. The biggest problem here is that, per point 2, the presentation of the post led folk to believe that this was a recent event because OP had omitted the date this took place, and this led to one user to thoughtfully suggest that it might be worth setting up a GoFundMe to help the owners with the repairs.
To reemphasize the point I’ve made throughout this post, I’m looking to incentivise better behaviour to occur sooner. It took nearly 10 hours before one jolly chap came along to do the fact-check. Naturally, had I seen this post while browsing arnew, I would have done the same, and so would a couple other users here as well who are good for this sort of thing — and that's unfortunate that I’m saying a “couple” instead of “many.” There is no curiosity amongst everyone who interacted with this post to inquire into the event; not even something simple as requesting OP for an article. So folks, always ask for a source if OP doesn’t provide one just so you have a bit more context. (Also, I am fascinated with the anecdote OP attached to this post. Did they just make up their credentials?)

Example E - Hebrew Sources and False Confidence

This is a wonderful example to close out this section because it exemplifies so many of the problematic behaviours that I have demonstrated in this post. I was only made aware of this thread because a user here DM'd me a link to the thread. I will refer to the individual posting misinformation in the comments as "OP", and I'll refer to the submitter of the post by their username, Sylmd. The rebuttals to OP are excellent, and I will focus more on the behaviour here.
Sylmd posted a submission doing a quick lil' fact-check on a Destiny tweet, noting the fact that he seemed to have misread or misremembered a particular report. I say "seemed" here in case Destiny was referring to some other report or article he had read, but that seems unlikely as he has referenced this report in several of his debates, and the report was the subject of his previous tweets. Regardless, it was a small mistake, and apart from failing to immediately link the tweet and the report (link your sources you silly goose), Sylmd's post is civil, calm, and makes no accusations of malicious intent.
According to OP, Destiny was actually right, and 300+ IDF soldiers were in fact injured. Now, there's so much that is astonishingly problematic with OP's comment, and I gotta... mention it all! Sorry!
Naturally, they don't ever quote from their sources, which means it's on us to try and find the relevant sections. OP claims that the articles linked will demonstrate that 380 Israelis were injured -- despite the fact that Sylmd is obviously doing a fact-check on how many Israeli soldiers were injured, and that's literally the subject of Destiny's tweet.
Whatever, I'm sure the articles at least "discusses around 380 injuries"? Fuck no they don't! There's no mention of this figure anywhere, and OP somehow racks up 50 upvotes when they accuse Sylmd of lying after they correctly point this out. Did these people actually read the articles, find this magical 380 figure, and think, "Grrr, Sylmd you mendacious scumbag, I see through your Hamas propaganda." Sylmd was sitting at -31, one hour after the thread was made. (If you refer back to Example 2, you'll see that I felt compelled to make a submission when I saw a user was being downvoted for correctly pointing out that an article did not prove a particular claim.)
It gets worse. Apparently, you have to "click through all the links in these articles buddy." Well, okay, that's pretty elaborate, how silly of us not to realize this. OP wants us to open up nine Hebrew articles, translate them, and then tally up the number of casualties. Problem? Surely we get to the 380 figure if we click through all the hyperlinks in the article? Fuck no we don't! And even if we did, this is the most blisteringly cumbersome way to prove a claim. The sheer condescension in OP's comment is equivalent to that of a Twitter leftist: "It's not my job to educate you honey, you must read the literature."
So where does this mysterious figure come from? Well, as Sylmd correctly pointed out (before OP mentioned it), they are grabbing this figure from Hebrew Wikipedia. Sylmd doesn't provide a link to the article in question, so I will provide it here, and as you can see, the two articles that OP linked came from this Wikipedia page. I'm not convinced OP actually read either of these articles.
That's not all. They then linked a report in Hebrew in their edit. Where did they get this report from? It's not on the Wikipedia page, maybe this is something they have bookmarked? Nope, they got it from another user in the thread! After all is said and done, they still somehow racked up 270 upvotes for this awful rebuttal, and they were, "Proud to take a blast for defending the truth."
Do I even need to mention the points here? It's an authoritative comment; the linked articles give an "aura" of being correct; and there's confidence in all their comments.
To quote from Example 1:
Anyways, since I began this post it looks like the upvotes and downvotes on the original comment have since shifted. Mashallah. It's the behaviour I was describing before: all the low-effort garbage gets upvoted first, and then other people break the circlejerk and try to add nuance. But it would be nice if the nuance was added first and foremost without the need for tedious fact-checks.
That still holds true today.

Consistency and Principles

Do I only address misinformation from the pro-Israel side? Not that it should matter, but no, I will address misinformation from the pro-Palestine on this subreddit if I see it and I feel like addressing it. I was irritated to see muppets like Rob Rousseau spread conspiracies about a "suspicious link" between ISIS and Mossad, and I encountered a user here who was sprouting similar conspiratorial nonsense. You’ll notice that (1) I was blessed to be called a “Reddit pseudo intellectual libtard” (not wrong, not false, this hurts bro); and (2) I apply the exact same methodology here as I do for the examples of misinformation I've addressed elsewhere — which isn’t to say I’m doing anything commendable here. I just read the articles, trying to find the primary sources where relevant, and then see if the “reporting” accurately conveys what was said or written.
However, digging up the original source can be a time-consuming endeavour, and compounded by the fact that I might not speak the relevant language — which means that there was a case where I inadvertently made a comment containing misinformation. A couple months ago someone requested a steelman of the argument that Israel is conducting a genocide against Gazans; I offered one, and to support the case I used a misquote taken from a Bloomberg video which omitted a crucial part of Yoev Gallant’s statement: the reference to Hamas, and thus radically changing the context of the statement. I hold myself to the same principle when it comes to curbing misinformation, and I was more than content to edit my comment to ensure it did not propagate further than it already had.
Some of you eagle-eyed readers might recognize this Gallant quote, as it made a very marked appearance within… South Africa's genocide case against Israel. Here, that salient reference to Hamas is also omitted, and the accompanying footnote cites the same Bloomberg video that I did. As I wished in another reply, Bloomberg did indeed take the video down eventually. Now, I can be excused for my mistake as I’m not making the positive case outside of my steelman. For South Africa, this is unbelievably shoddy work when you're officially bringing a genocide case against another state.
Anyways, I've gone through many examples in this schizo-post, and it's entirely possible that I've made an error at some point; the irony is not lost on me. Feel free to point these errors out. I might not agree with your assessment, but I'm always willing to hear the arguments.

Prescriptions: The Six Points (Déjà vu)

I'm going to end with The Six Points because that's the focus of Part 1 and Part 2. As previously mentioned, this post is not intended to demonstrate that the misinformation the pro-Israel crowd spreads is as egregious as the misinformation the pro-Palestine spreads, whether in general or on this subreddit. While misinformation from the pro-Palestine crowd slips by every now and then on the subreddit, I would make the case that, generally speaking, it is quickly addressed. In my experience, however, I was finding quite a few cases of misinformation from the pro-Israel crowd were taking a concerning amount of time to be addressed; and in the interest of ensuring that it does get addressed in a more timely manner, I believe the following prescriptions would be helpful to keep in mind when browsing the subreddit:
  1. Value the process just as much — if not, more — than the conclusion.
  2. Be wary of how the presentation of information or the omission of pertinent information can lead to the inadvertent spread of misinformation.
  3. Be aware of how “charged” topics/threads lead to poor reasoning that lacks dispassionate analysis.
  4. Be aware of how pre-existing beliefs about an individual or organization alongside the usual biases leads to a reluctance to fact-check, where claims are taken at face-value because they feel right.
  5. Link the article. Read the article. (Thoroughly.)
  6. Redirect criticism to areas where it will be the strongest.

US Marine Corps PFC Leonard Mason: WWII Medal of Honor Recipient #shorts #history #military
Medal of Honor Citation:
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as an automatic rifleman serving with the 2d Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Asan-Adelup Beachhead, Guam, Marianas Islands on 22 July 1944. Suddenly taken under fire by two enemy machine guns not more than 15 yards away while clearing out hostile positions holding up the advance of his platoon through a narrow gully, Pfc. Mason, alone and entirely on his own initiative, climbed out of the gully and moved parallel to it toward the rear of the enemy position. Although fired upon immediately by hostile riflemen from a higher position and wounded repeatedly in the arm and shoulder, Pfc. Mason grimly pressed forward and had just reached his objective when hit again by a burst of enemy machine-gun fire, causing a critical wound to which he later succumbed. With valiant disregard for his own peril, he persevered, clearing out the hostile position, killing five Japanese, wounding another, and then rejoining his platoon to report the results of his action before consenting to be evacuated. His exceptionally heroic act in the face of almost certain death enabled his platoon to accomplish its mission and reflects the highest credit upon Pfc. Mason and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
