2024.05.14 04:33 WSpinner Chunky

Loosely inspired by this prompt a few days ago

Chunky

Cyrus strained to remember Botaski body language. Hairtendrils poofed straight out matched... human eyes bugging out? Disbelief? "Gerrota, fess up - something about the Fleet Nine Task Order Roster is bothering you?"
"Yes, Ser-geant Cy-rus. Much I do and do not understand."
"It's okay to drop the rank with other noncoms, Ger - your navy's Corbindermander is about where I am on the food chain. But other than soul-crushing boredom, what's wrong with our Roster? I have to memorize the stupid thing - you exchange staff only need familiarization."
"Cy-rus, why is the number of vessel types the same as the number of ships?"
"Hmm. Well, technically they ARE all different. Look at column TG instead - the type-groups may make more sense."
"There are still forty-two groups, out of 311 ships. Why?"
"Your home fleet has what, four ship classes?"
"Yes, Cy-rus. Would not standardization benefit your war efforts?"
"They ARE standardized, just not at the ship level."
"Tell me more. Three-hundred-eleven unique ships... hurts my brains."
"Okay, let me tell you a story. You know this fleet links by chitter-fling methods?"
"Stutter-blink drives?"
"No, that's different. Still takes intermittent FTL field activation though, just moving through third underspace, not fourth overspace. Anyway - what's your acclimatization intro package say our next link is?"
"Gotorry-Beta - 148.45 light years in your units?"
"Ages ago we patrolled through here using chitter-fling, and this one link had us in and out of FTL maybe five thousand times in ninety minutes."
"Your quartermaster issued me a mouth guard for this reason?"
"Right. It's like riding a jackhammer as a pogo stick."

"Sorry. Cultural reference: it bangs us around. Did then and still does. But then, as separate ships, transit varied from 4500 chitters to 5200 or so, and inevitably we scattered over a tenth of the target star system. So back sixty years ago that 'normal' transit trashed three destroyers and nineteen of the Gotorry navigation buoys. Chitter-fling is WAY faster than... do your fleets use Torpal Compression Drive?"
"Yes."
"Well, fleets need maintenance all the time. No biggie, normal attrition, who cares - right?"
"Not right, Cy-rus. Our fleets never experience such casual damage."
"Hmm - right - just a tenth the speed..."
"Hu-mans take crazy risks. This I knew when I signed up for exchange duty."
"Risk, shmisk. Stuff breaks. But that fleet carried an entire Quartet of Imperial Auditors; senior ones. Their ship arrived not on top of a nav beacon, but just downstream of the destruction of one. Imagine a shrapnel shower while you're still transit-groggy..."
"I will agree that is a horror. Please let me forget the image before sleep cycle!"
"Whatever. Anyway, the Auditors got shook up, and they in turn shook down our Admiralty Engineering Division with a 'Fix Or Else' order. They did, and now you see the approach of the rest of the fleet on the screen?"
"Why are they crowding us, Cy-rus? How can your navigators fly in formation so tight?!"
"Heh. Not formation, buddy - contact. Big human fleets now do chitter-fling together. Look, you were wondering earlier why our frigate looks so - *blocky* did you say?"
"Or *chunky*, Cy-rus."
"No lie, our vessel morphology is nothing like your Navy's. You folks what, *grow* those streamlined shapes?"
"Yes. A Bo-taski ship-plant is not a *factory* plant, but an *organic* plant. Your language is odd."
"I hear you. But how often do you guys *need* aerodynamic smoothness - what, maybe every year or three you dip in-atmosphere? Anyway - the Auditors also dinged the fleet for excessive customization, so the solution wound up standardizing - I think 95% of our construction?"
"That failed obviously. **What Kind Of Standard Is 311 Ship Classes?!** "
"Wise guy. The chunky look explains that. Our standardization is at the functional module level. The machines and weapons and structure of this frigate could make four mostly-functional sloops. You could glom two of us together and get a nasty destroyer. Likewise if we salvaged a wrecked human cruiser, most of its bits would make spares, replacements, or enhancements for anything between a patrol ketch and an Uber Battlewagon. Maybe not a Lyft Battlewagon - those lean toward carrier duties so you'd fix one with pieces from slingshot brigs, transport barks, maybe escort cutters. The Lyfts can shatter into an overpowered keel and hundreds of fighter craft."
"Shatter... from battle damage?"
"Noooo - intentionally shatter: split or scatter. You noticed the blobs abeam our aft turret? Those are parasite missile cutters - they deploy the same way. We're classed F2/Gamma/Toroid-Blue/N40/Dry. An F2/Gamma/Toroid-Blue/N36/Wet like the Henderson there has more fuel stowage and one less missile cutter. Maybe they're a Toroid-Teal - I don't remember.
"See, the engineering division that was told to fix the problem was - still is - in Billund, Denmark. I know that doesn't mean anything to you - old city on our homeworld. The facility there, the Logistics & Engineering General Office, has been doing work on interconnectability for centuries. Supposedly since before humans went to space.
"Put your... ear frills I guess? up against the wall. Hear some clicks and thumps? We're now snapped onto the starboard stern of the flagship, Juggernaut Prime, and other vessels are still attaching. Once done, we will be one big vessel that will chitter-fling *without scattering*.
"You'll still need the mouthguard though. Let me 'splain 'jackhammer'. "

2024.05.14 04:33 Woodsideelement Have any of you flopped?

Worked 13 years in the industry. Mostly in 3 star places. Every place I’ve ever had a title that the reputation of the restaurant depended on succeeded very well. It was a team effort, and we were on top of it. When I went out on my own and was exec, I did well.
Then I went to a city where the food scene is all casual dining and chains. I was halfway between fine dining and casual trying to accommodate local palates while trying to showcase talent and stand out. I received nothing but bad reviews. I feel that I could have taken my exact menu and received praise in actual food cities, but not here. The new chef is serving overcooked salmon on cedar planks and endive leaves stuffed with cheese and orange slices and it’s been nothing but rave reviews. Honestly, good on him and I’m happy for the team as they were a good crew and I want to see them get praise for their work. The food is as basic as it gets though and the reviews seem to be “better than the former chef” every time.
Have any of you been in a similar boat? I straight up am questioning all 13 years. How the hell did I manage a 3 star restaurant and create those menus when I couldn’t succeed at pleasing simple eaters? How is it I have received accolades and praise for half of those years and suddenly everyone tells me I suck? I’m lost.

2024.05.14 04:29 lexxstrum Are the new movies going to replace the psychic mutants with....(spoilerish)

Vault dwellers? Instead of mutants with psychic powers that threaten Ape society, we get these (from the ape perspective) smart humans with unbelievable technology who seek to return humans to the top of the food chain.
While I'll miss those wacky mutants, putting smart humans in their spot works better with the new storyline.

2024.05.14 04:15 Particular_Cellist25 Qigong of logical deduction

'qi'sisez' (a pronoun derived from Chinese energy terminology) was thinking about how many different species interact with bacteria/viruses/pathogens that have just evolved/emerged and I was like O wow (a lil birdie(s) got us thinking)
When different animals immune systems have viruses/ pathogens cycle through them and the food chain/food webs, it can have the effect that once a virus/pathogens gets to humanity it is in a form that can be easier 'stomached' by OUR immune system/'immune pool'! (related to our breeding pool, 'immune sensory pool' )
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3113540/ immune system as a sensory system^ BLESSED FROGS! And many other!
So where qes went with it was, thinking about Covid. The bat populations share a food chain 'link pool' with other insectovorious creatures like birds, other insects and FROGS! I have been reading about air pollution and how it has created massive wildlife deaths across the world ND I thought about some that would particularly sensitive to its effects, those that breathe through their skin, AMPHIBIANS!
Immune/pathogens pools that lie at intersecting positions for multiple predators are subject to multi-biome dynamics and that's where I got to.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10491481/ insect pathogen crosstalk^
More air pollution, more death of amphibians which share a common prey with bats, flying insects. Flying insects which share a pathogen pool that trickles through to humanity.
Less airpollution more FROGS and friends and less plagues due to underserved pathogens pools? We think very much so.
Good morning. Save the animals. Help reduce/end negligent waste disposal practices in global Industry. Please and thank you.

2024.05.14 03:55 Snoo61755 New Ship Perk Suggestions

Long ago, NMS only allowed players to own a single ship, making it a major decision on which ship type a traveler should go after. However, realizing this felt clunky, updates have been made over the years, ship slots increased, new tech modules, and new features added. This was a great call, but it did leave one mark: the distinctions between each ship didn't matter anymore; Haulers don't even have the benefit of additional cargo space, since all S-class ships can have the same total number of slots.
I was talking ship perks with someone, and it got me thinking that perhaps it would make sense to introduce new strengths to less used ship types. As I was mulling it over, I realized that some of these changes would have to be pretty potent to stand up to current-day standards -- poor Shuttles, their only real signature is that their takeoff price is reduced, made obsolete by the auto-recharge modules. So I decided to spitball a few ideas trying to stay true to the ship's purpose while taking 2024 NMS in mind, and see if the following suggestions are strong enough to make you think "oh yeah, I'd definitely want to own a [ship type]."
Shuttles:
  1. 25% faster flight speed than others while in-atmosphere.
  2. 100% faster Pulse Drive speed.
  3. Takeoffs and landings are quicker and snappier.
Haulers:
  1. Cargo slots are double-sized, just like Freighters and storage containers.
  2. One storage augmentation slot unlocks two slots when used to unlock cargo slots.
  3. When the Teleport Receiver is installed, Hauler item teleport range is unlimited within the same star system.
Living:
  1. Increased chance of finding Space Encounters while pulsing. Alien Traders completely removed from encounter pool (Frequency 12 > 0). Odds of Rogue Black Hole and Relic Gate events tripled (Frequency 1 > 3).
  2. Eating food while in a ship refuels the ship's hyper drive, pulse drive, launch thrusters, and damaged shields.
Explorer:
  1. Scanning one planet scans every planet in the system.
  2. Hyperdrive chain jumps. When setting a waypoint on the galactic map, can directly jump to that waypoint as long as the Explorer would have enough fuel to reach there, or up to 5 jumps (aka 5x listed hyperdrive range).
Let me know if these are along the right lines, and whether you'd fly one of these if they had these perks.

2024.05.14 03:41 storyinmemo Lessons from my first 20 years of Realistic Mode

Started in 1960 and it was rough. Heating issues, water cuts, backed up sewers... but I made it to 10k people. In 1968 I had to enable cheat mode for a one time "loan forgiveness". I built up debt into 1980 but finally turned the profitability corner. So here's what I'm going to try to do in my next play:
Macro Layout
Pollution is king. When things ramped up, 400 meters wasn’t enough. Put the edge of housing a full kilometer from industry and waste handling.
Rail is important early. Lay in a single rail line to pull gravel for construction, coal for a heating plant + bricks, and connecting the farm to the industry. Build your construction industry on one side of the border and your manufacturing industry on the other side of it.
City layout
Start with a bus stop and building your residential buildings 200 meters max away from it. Put paths parallel to roads. Create redundant paths to everything so upgrading to gravel, asphalt, etc. doesn’t break things. Build all your housing on one side of the bus stop initially.
Put city services based on vehicles (police, fire, etc.) outside the core of the city. They’ll only be walkable to half of the city compared to the bus stop but the city can be larger. Same with university and schools. Schools, kindergartens, etc. may become overcrowded as the city grows. Build the large hospital in the core as despite having ambulances it is primarily a walking building.
Transfer for big waste (large) should be at the edge of your city and connected to a rail line. Technical services delivers to there. From there, a rail line eventually exports it for handling. Until the rail station is built, use a distribution office to export waste. Sorting is key and should be researched early. Use Stand for big waste containers (small) attached to roads to collect waste whenever possible. Stand for small containers (large) can be used when footpath access is the only option but it’s remarkably less efficient. Citizens produce about 1:3 biological waste to mixed waste so allocate containers accordingly. Within the city only hospitals create hazardous waste and nobody creates aluminum waste.
Build the small party headquarters to start, then the large technical university. You'll need the numbers for faster education and faster tech tree climbing.
Import 3rd world immigrants once you have a minimum educated base to staff your schools. They're way cheaper. Quality housing > dense housing. Dense is great but dense and poor quality = high resource intake and low productivity. Densify in your second city, or rework.
Monuments only get your to 40% loyalty so don't lose your mind on it.
Water and Power
Redundant and parallel. Every time you place a transformer, place a high six way high voltage splitter with it. You will branch your power network to more places over time and need to reroute wires which you can only do while online with open switch ports. Never use the last switch port without building another chained switch.
Similarly, always branch your water and sewer. Unfortunately you can’t have multiple inputs to a line, but you can at least make sure that you can keep branching until the upstream has nothing left to give. Pay attention to pressure. Build the large water tower to supply the town.
Intake water quality is key. Your wells must be placed where pollution won’t reach. Industry should be fed directly from a well so you’re not spending chemicals purifying water. The more polluted the water is, the more chemicals you’ll have to spend to clean it up and that gets expensive very quickly.
Treating wastewater gives a massive reduction in pollution but also takes an expensive amount of chemicals. Best to put your outlet far away if possible instead of trying to treat the water. Drop a sewer switch (remember, always an empty outlet on every switch for infra changes!) before the outlet in case you change your mind.
Roads
Vehicles use the same amount of fuel as long as they’re in motion. If your vehicle top speed is a fraction of your road speed, you’re wasting money. Road stretches of ~500 meters need to be paved and should probably be divided highways. Tight industrial roads with lots of turns can be gravel because you won’t accelerate much anyway. Panel roads are also pretty good as intermediates here. If you’ve got advanced roads on, make sure to set give ways at every highway intersection or your vehicles will drop down to 50 km/h at every one.
Your center of town road probably gets congested and you can help that by banning heavy goods vehicles except supply.
Industry
Focus around one large long warehouse with a train connection at the end and factories directly connected around the warehouse. Central warehouse should have:
The livestock farm is a bit of a wildcard. It consumes a lot of water and generates a lot of wastewater. Plan for this and consider whether it should be located near your farm or near your factory. I lean towards keeping it with the factory for the sake of concentrating your workforce on one high-throughput passenger line. We'll see how the next playthrough goes.
Mining
Steel is my highest cost and getting to a steel mill that runs even at 5% of capacity seems highly worthwhile. Find coal, colocate with coal mining, attach to train line. Attach transfer to large waste and manage as needed. General separation on site may be reasonable.
Farms
Grow locally. Farms are basically the one thing that doesn’t require people to produce profit or at least reduce cost. As the input to one of your early money makers (clothing)
Economy
Clothing is a top export and accessible early which is key. Build for it, use your own crops, and fill in the rest of the supply chain as you can (chemical plant). Same for steel after some time: find the iron, move it over… but start with making the plant run even with imports.
The republic runs on steel. Want to move something efficiently? You need rails and steel. Want to store it? More steel. More efficient building or process? Going to take steel.
Find coal, make steel. When you have steel, get the radio station going. Yeah, that's not an industry but the productivity boost from loyalty boost is huge.
Now that you have clothing and steel going, make a refinery.
From this point, find the most expensive import and produce it locally until the most expensive doesn’t matter. From there, climb the tech tree into autos and nuclear power. Expand to new cities.

2024.05.14 03:27 worksafematt_000 Meaningless huh?

What do (You) know about meaningless? People love to say it doesn't matter but it does live shows fuel the economy in unexpected ways locally & globally it's a reason to get people out & about they go to see the show & then afterwards go eat some food that helps the restaurant industry or maybe go watch some movies that helps the theater chains, still gotta get around though right? That helps cab companies & ride sharing services as well as the airlines yes livemusic is vital to our way of life

2024.05.14 03:04 CRAZYLEGSLLAUGER Bad ass quote for a character

Me (the DM) and my friends are planning on doing a sandbox D&D game there’s a character I want to introduce them to.
he’s a Lizard Folk Barbarian named Antrocuga, and he’s been experimented and forced to be the bodyguard and killing machine by a mysterious magic user, who built him to be pretty much a 6foot 8 tall Godzilla. But ever since the events of Boulders Gate 3 he had the opportunity to kill his master, and do better for the world after what he’s done and find his place in the food chain, the wild, and his place in the world.
I plan on having the party have a quest to rescue a “misshaped Dragon” (Antrocuga) but when they come across a lake or River he popped out of the water, wrestling a great crocodilian like beast and uses his fire breath on the creature killing it. Then, after a victory roar, he slowly looks over to the party as he takes a deep, growly breath. What should he say?
What should he say?
I hope I spelled everything incorrectly :, )

2024.05.14 02:57 KonosubaChristmasWiz Dr Bailey and how shes grown over the last 20 years.

I’ve been re-watching episodes where Dr Bailey started out as a mousey intern, full of shyness, and severely lacking confidence, and became the powerhouse that she evolved into when she initially taught each of the original five.
Bailey loved each of the original five as her own children, that’s why she gets so frustrated when Meredith puts herself in these kind of situations. It’s a mother’s frustration, a mother’s love.
Lets examine Bailey over the entire series run.
She loved each of original five as if they were her own children, and thats why she gets so frustrated when Meredith does something to put herself in these kinds of situations. Its a mothers love…is it not?
I mentioned Meredith’s trial as an example yesterday, and i re-watched it closely and revised my opinion.
She knew as far back as season 3 that Meredith was a pain in her side. Remember the panties on the bulletin board?
Remember her being protective of Meredith and laying into McDreamy when he caught them in a parked car?
She also knew that Meredith had the makings of an excellent surgeon. She knew that Meredith had to go through the refiners fire.
Heres a transcript of her speech.
Dr. Bailey: 'Ever since I first met Meredith Grey I knew she was going to be a thorn in my side. You're worried about her breaking rules? Well, that's not gonna stop. She's been doing that since day one.
And, yes, she broke a law to save a life. So she deserved to lose her job. She deserves to pick up trash. No one should be questioning her license.
She's too good at what she does. And she's worked too hard to get to where she is. And with all that she has survived, it hasn't made her hard. It hasn't made her mean or cold. It hasn't made her not care.
It's made her better. It's made her better than anyone in this room. Well, except me. I'm Dr. Miranda Bailey, chief of surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, and I approve this message.'
—————— my reasoning of Dr. Bailey at the hearing————
Bailey doesn’t try to lessen what Meredith has done. She doesn’t try to get her off the hook. She explains why Meredith is such a good surgeon and states that everything she’s been through has made her an even better doctor.
Meredith may make some interesting choices, and some of them may drive Dr. Bailey up the walls, just like children often do. But given their relationship, Dr. Bailey hated Meredith’s actions, but not Meredith herself.
Have you ever been in a situation where someone you loved and cared about did something you you hated and didnt approve of? Did you hate them for it or did you hate *what they did* but not themselves?
You can hate what someone does without hating the person themselves. That is what I believe Bailey has done. In the beginning of the series, she was billed as a not-see (not typing it out)
This was Dr Bailey’s first speech to the interns in S1E1
"I have five rules, memorize them,” she told the interns. “Rule number don't bother sucking up, I already hate you, that's not gonna change, trauma protocol…nurses will page you, you will answer every page at a run. A run, that’s rule number two.”
“Your first shift starts now and lasts 48 hours. You’re interns, grunts, nobodies, bottom of the surgical food chain,” she continued.
“You run labs, write orders, work every second until you drop and don’t complain. On-call rooms, Attendings hog them, sleep when you can where you can, which brings me to rule number three if I’m sleeping, don’t wake me unless your patient is actually dying."
“Rule number four, the dying patient better not be dead when I get there, then not only would you have killed someone, you would have woke me for no good reason, we clear?”
She was responsible for turning out excellent surgeons.
You dont go easy on them and expect them to thrive and survive. You go hard on them. But you want them to succeed.
Otherwise you are just wasting your time, your resources, and the lives of the patients that they lost.
In the current season, Dr Bailey is back, doing what she did in the beginning, but this time she has 20 years experience.
We’ve seen Miranda go soft on people during the series and we’ve seen that doesn't turn out very well. Remember what BCB is an acronym for? What surgeons need is tough love. What surgeons need is someone to inspire them.
Bailey may be straightforward, tough, and full of wit and wisdom. Without a doubt, she is a really good physician and an independent one at that. However that independence has cost her personal relationships such as Ben.
She hated that Ben became a firefighter and is how in a very perilous environment day after day, but she doesn’t hate the guy.
If anything, Miranda has become more compassionate and more open hearted…not hateful
Not too long ago, Miranda started a women’s clinic at the hospital and as a result of her hard work in the face of adversity from the pro-lifers, she wins the esteemed Catherine Fox Award.
How can you do something like that while spreading hate throughout the hospital? You cant.

2024.05.14 02:09 Graukislove What’s your opinion on the cougar?

If you haven’t read the dev diary, the cougar will be added in part 5. The way that it works is that if you spend a lot of time in a region, (maybe 2+ weeks), the cougar will show up and claim the region for itself.
You’ll get plenty of warning signs before it claims the region and when it has claimed the region, like buried kills and claw marks on trees, but once it starts the attack phase (which also takes some time) chances are you’re not gonna know.
In the diary it says that the cougar is very hard to kill but you can COUNTERattack it, which means that likely the cougar attacks fast while you least expect it to and only then will you get a chance to hit it. It also causes a new affliction, maybe some deep wounds?
The only way to temporarily stop a cougar from attacking you is to kill it, blow up its den with a noisemaker (it’s den is random every game) or go to another region, where the timer starts again.
Personally, I’m a big fan of this animal. Late in the game, the only real threat is your own ego and bad luck. The cougar is supposed to be the apex predator, on the same step (maybe higher) of the food chain as you.
However, I have seen some comments saying this is cabin fever 2.0 to keep people moving late game and that it might be similar to the darkwalker.
With the other changes in the diary, I think that this update will be a knock out of the park, but that’s just my opinion.
Edit: I rechecked the diary and there will be one cougar den in the entire world that you have to hunt down, and after you blow it up it will probably change dens. Also, the cougar attacks will probably be a mix of wolf and beamoose attacks. The cougar can kill you by itself like a wolf, where bears and moose take away a percentage of your health, but a bad encounter will probably be a mauling and not a struggle.

2024.05.14 01:47 Grrrrrrrrr86 Waffle House vs IHOP/Denny’s ?

I’ve never been to a Waffle House but I’m going on vacation this summer near one of I’ll certainly be going for the allure of it! I’m mostly wondering what’s the difference between Waffle House and other chain breakfast places like IHOP and Denny’s. They seam to be similarly priced and have basically the same breakfast food. Does Waffle House just have much better tasting food or something ?

2024.05.14 01:35 TheLastRiter I never should have gone to this farmhouse alone. [Part 1]

My hands are shaking as I write this, I have to document my story incase something happens to me in the next few days. I'm not sure where to begin but I suppose here is better than anywhere.
I've always had this weird feeling, this sensation inside of me that I was older than I actually was. By the time I was twelve, my soul felt as though it was forty. By the time I reached twenty, I felt like an old woman. I would watch people around my age acting foolish, and I always thought, "What a bunch of children." So it was no surprise to anyone that when I turned twenty-one, I left my hometown and college and decided to spend the summer alone by renting an old farmhouse in an insignificant town on the edge of an even more insignificant border.
When I told my mother, she had a veritable fit, unable to find the words. She spluttered and raged around me for days before I finally left early one morning to avoid her guilt and frustration with my choices. I was not sure why I craved solitude at such a young age, why I found solace in being alone and removed from society.
In high school, I had changed unexpectedly, cutting my long blonde hair short and dying it black, getting piercings that my mother loathed and claimed no young lady should have. You see, my mother was raised proper, as she called it. Good family, good husband, and finally a good life. She despised her perfect life being squashed by my alternative looks and feelings of the same world. She just didn't understand me or the world as it changed around her. I felt like I was just a trophy to her and my father, her perfect angel who had been tainted by my own demented thoughts.
I never told my parents where I was staying, one last rebellious mission before leaving for a few months, and it took me only a few hours to arrive at the farmhouse where I would be staying for the next few months. The land around the farm was dead or dying, old crops rose out of the dry dusty earth and had turned black and forgotten, as if this land was the example of dreams long forgotten and empty. A single dreary lane connected this desolate farmhouse to the rest of the world. On the outside, it was drab and looked as though it would fall apart. It had two stories but still seemed cramped and small, as if it were a single floor tied to the ground.
Across from the house, bordering the tall weeds that had reclaimed much of the farmland, stood a maudlin-looking faded red barn, one door propped open in a dejected manner revealing naught to me but shadows, dust, and a little mystery.
Next to the barn, staked into the ground on an old-looking cross, was a ragged scarecrow. It had drab brown clothing, but its face was oddly realistic, like it was watching me with a disapproving manner. Straw poked through its joints at odd angles like they were trying to break free from their confines. The scarecrow obviously didn't do its job as it was covered in no less than three crows.
I parked my car next to the barn and stepped out into the dusty yard before the farmhouse that I would make my home for the next few months. I checked under the front mat for the key and put it in the lock.
With a satisfying click, the door fell inward into the farmhouse. Surprisingly, the inside of the farmhouse was modern, clean, and looked quite inviting. I could smell the fresh paint on the walls, and everything was so white. The realtor had told me she would stop by tomorrow to collect the rent, and she had tried to chat my ear off on the phone about all the renovations she and her son were doing on the place.
I sighed with contentment and tossed my bags beside the door. I dug around in my bag and removed my camera, my father's old film shooter as he called it. I had taken up the hobby years ago for what I called capturing the oddity in the world.
I explored the small house a little more; the ground floor consisted of a single room and small bathroom with a shower. The bedroom was upstairs and was the only room, the stairs connected directly to the white and pink monstrosity that was the master bedroom. The pillows had laces on them and almost made me gag from the cuteness. There was even cute white lace curtains on the window with little flowers stitched onto them.
Out of the only window of the room, I could see the barn and the scarecrow. I aimed my camera at the pair and snapped a photo. From this angle, the scarecrow appeared to be staring straight at me. It stood next to the left side of the barn in a dejected manner like a chastised child.
A shudder involuntarily ran through me at the sight, but I moved on back downstairs. It was getting close to dinner time now, and I had brought some food with me.
After a few minutes, I had my dinner on the stove cooking and the crickets chirping outside the open window. As I sat down to eat next to the window, I felt at peace for one of the first times in years. The solitude of this old farm was exactly what I needed. The window supplied a nice breeze that wafted through the place, it smelled of grass and warm summer nights, made me feel at peace. The simple dish of spaghetti with tomato sauce and a glass of wine was all that I needed right here, right now in this moment.
That night I climbed into the frilly laced bed and sunk into the claustrophobic mattress. I felt like Goldilocks in the mama bear's bed as it was altogether too soft. From my perfumed bed, I had a good view out the window. I had left the porch light on, and it cast an eerie glow across the yard. The barn loomed ominously, stalwart against the light of the porch, like it was protecting the shadows from the battering ram of light. The somber scarecrow leaned against the left side of the barn.
With a small jump, I thought I saw its arm move slightly. I peered through my camera using the zoom to get a better view of the scarecrow. It was completely still in the night, and I laughed quietly to myself at my silliness. I had always enjoyed horror movies, but there was no chance I was living in one. I settled back into bed and put my camera down. Within a few minutes, I fell into sleep's warm embrace.
What felt like only a few minutes later, I sat up in bed. It was still dark out, I could hear crickets chirping through the open window, and I strained my ears for a moment.
I thought something had woken me up. I felt a cold shiver run down my spine as a cold breeze wafted in through the window. I pulled the frilly blanket up around myself when I heard it. A thud sounded below me, shaking the whole world into silence. The crickets stopped chirping, and my heart felt like it had stopped beating. Someone was in the house. I hadn't locked the door or closed the kitchen window, and now someone was downstairs. A second thud sounded like a boot on the staircase. Then another and another as something was slowly moving up the stairs towards the room.
I don't know why I did it, but something came over me. I wasn't big or especially brave, but my normal cowardice in social situations changed instantly. With a dash, I tore across the room, flicking on the lights, ready to face my attacker, to defend myself against male or female. I would fight, and I would win.
But as the lights turned on, ready to strike with my foot, nothing was there. The staircase was empty, and upon further inspection, the entire house was empty. The kitchen window was open, and I shut and locked it securely before checking the door. Nothing. I sat down on the couch, my heart pounding out of my chest, as I tried to make sense of what had just happened.
"I must have still been half-asleep," I said aloud to the room in a thinly veiled attempt to calm my nerves. It failed horribly, but I went with it. What else could you do in a situation like that?
After locking up the house, I went back up to that frilly four-poster bed in the bedroom and stared out the window. Nothing was in the yard except my car, the barn, and the same old sad-looking scarecrow staring across the yard.
Day 2
The next morning, I woke up to the soft light filtering through the lace curtains. Despite the strange events of the previous night, I felt strangely refreshed, as if the morning sun had chased away the shadows that lingered in my mind.
I descended the stairs, the wooden steps creaking softly under my weight, and headed to the kitchen. As I brewed a pot of coffee, my mind wandered back to the events of last night. Was it just a figment of my imagination, or was there really someone in the house?
Shaking off the unease, I decided to explore the farmhouse in the daylight. I wandered through the room, admiring the modern renovations that clashed with the rustic exterior. The farmhouse had a charm to it, despite its eerie surroundings.
As I made my way outside, the cool morning air greeted me, and I took a deep breath, letting the serenity of the countryside wash over me. The barn stood tall against the backdrop of the morning sky, and the scarecrow seemed to watch me as I crossed the yard.
I approached the barn, curiosity getting the better of me. Pushing open the creaky door, I stepped inside, the musty scent of hay filling my nostrils. The interior was dimly lit, the sunlight filtering through the cracks in the wooden walls.
I explored every nook and cranny of the barn, but found nothing out of the ordinary. As I turned to leave, something caught my eye. In the corner of the barn, hidden beneath a pile of old blankets, was a small wooden chest.
My heart racing with anticipation, I lifted the lid of the trunk and peered inside. What I found took my breath away. It was a collection of old photographs, yellowed with age, depicting scenes from a bygone era. They were of a man with his family, two young kids, and a beautiful young wife. The man had yellow blonde hair, almost like straw in texture, but he smiled so happily with his family.
I sifted through the photographs, my fingers trembling with excitement. Who had left these behind, and why? Each photograph seemed to tell a story, a glimpse into the past of this forgotten farmhouse.
As I sat there, lost in thought, a sudden noise jolted me back to reality. It was the sound of footsteps coming from outside the barn.
"Hello?" The dreamy voice of a woman called to me from the entrance to the barn.
I slammed the lid of the trunk shut, closing the memories up in a flurry as I spun around to be greeted by a quite pretty woman with blonde hair and a pink suit skirt combo. She had bright pink lipstick, that seemed to be a permanent fixture on her face, and quite shiny and sparkly blue eye shadow on her lids. I myself only wore black eyeliner. This woman was like Barbie in her proportions, thin waist, long hair, and large tracts of land, as my father would have said.
"Oh, hello," I said simply, always awkward in normal social situations.
If she noticed anything odd about me, she breezed over it in an easy manner. Taking me by the shoulders, she led me out of the dusty barn and into the yard.
"You must be Polly. We have been waiting a while for you to come. I simply must know what you think of the renovations to the house. Aren’t they just to die for?" The lady said all in one breath, as if she didn’t need air to speak.
"Yes, they are quite nice..." I started before she cut me off, not in a rude manner but instead in one that she would have continued on even if I had just told her I was not Polly and instead I was a mass murderer looming for my next victim.
"You see, me and my son Eli—yes, Eli, you stop lurking in the shadows over there," she said, continuing on as I noticed a younger man leaning up against the barn. He wore simple clothes of jeans and a white t-shirt but had a handsome face. His hair was brown and hung slightly over his eyes.
"I hope you don’t mind if my son here continues working on some renovations while you stay here? Strictly on the outside of the house, mind you. A fresh coat of white paint would make this little beauty shine. We would have finished by now if not for the accidents," she continued, completely unabashed by my silence.
"Sorry. But you are the realtor?" I said, trying to regain my feet under me.
"Oh my god, I am so sorry, dear!" she said with an affable cackle.
"Yes, yes, I am Barbara, but all my friends call me Barb. That over there is Eli. Eli, come say hi," Barb said while her painted talons rested firmly on my shoulder.
Eli stomped over, keeping his eyes low, in a sort of moody way that actually intrigued me, sort of.
When he glanced up at me, I noticed he drank in me from head to toe, and for the first time, I realized what I was wearing. An old rock t-shirt of one of my favorite bands and, of all things, my black pajama bottoms with cartoon bats on them that said "happy halloween."
I felt my face blush crimson as he made eye contact with me. He had very mysterious eyes of blue that seemed to cut right through my soul.
"Nice shirt," he said while gesturing to me. His voice was quiet and uncertain, as if he didn’t get much practice with the art. Knowing his mother, it seemed highly accurate.
"Thanks. Do you like them?" I asked.
"Oh, he likes all sorts of things, don’t you, Eli? Honestly, you two can gab on forever. But miss, I believe we have a small matter of payment," Barb said, drawing the conversation back to herself.
"Of course. Let me go get it," I said as I went back into the house and retrieved the envelope with the rent money in it.
Barb grabbed the envelope in her bright pink talons and snapped a piece of bubblegum between her teeth. With quick fingers, she leafed through the cash, counting it. As she counted, her normal bubbly personality seemed to disappear, giving way to what I gleaned was her true thoughts and feelings before the facade slipped on once again.
"Mmkay, perfect honey, this is the right amount. Now you have my number, so you call if you need anything. Like I said earlier, Eli will stop by from time to time to work on painting the house. I promise you he won’t be an imposition, just pay him no mind," Barb said in a sweet voice as she popped her gum in between each word.
"Eli, come on, please, I have an appointment in town," Barb said to her son, and they both climbed into a garish pink convertible with jewels hanging from the mirror wrapped in a gold chain.
Barb waved one last time as she sped off out of the driveway, covering me in dust as she spun the wheel around.
With their departure, I went inside and retrieved my camera. I spent a few minutes shooting a few pictures I thought were worthy. I re-entered the barn and pulled the old trunk out into the sunshine. Inside was only a handful of photos, some old clothes, and what looked like some old heirlooms. A beautifully old candlestick and a few leather-bound books lay at the bottom, covered by an old tablecloth. The tablecloth was a nice white with intricate swirling patterns inlaid around the edges.
Why would these things be packed away in here? They were so beautiful. I decided to bring the stuff inside for further inspection. As I lifted the trunk, out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw something move in the tall grass at the edge of the property. I stared for a minute, but nothing moved again. I must be getting jumpy being alone like this. After last night and then this, I was just imagining things.
I brought the items inside and spread them out. I put the tablecloth on the table, and it hung low to the ground. I placed the candlestick by the window and took out the photos again, spreading them out.
The photos told me a story of a loving family that obviously lived in the farmhouse before me. They had a photo next to the barn, with a brand new looking scarecrow in the back. The man even had his arm around it; it looked so much cleaner and proper in this photo. I stared outside at the sad-looking scarecrow.
I took my camera and the photo and went outside to stand next to the scarecrow. His post hung kind of crooked in the earth like it was weighed down by the scarecrow.
I snapped a photo of the scarecrow as it was, then examined the original photo. I began resettling the post in the ground, but it kept sagging. I decided to pull him out of the ground and move him while I added more dirt to his hole. With some effort, I reseated him into his original hole. He already looked better, but I straightened his clothes and pulled out the last bits of straw that stuck out of his clothes. When I was finished, I looked back at him and took a photo, smiling while I did so at my work.
I then spent some time sweeping the front porch and banging the dust out of the cushions before I curled up on a wicker chair with plump cushions for a few hours reading a book I had brought with me.
I felt quite content at this place. The sounds of the crickets began again, putting me at ease as the sun began to descend. I had spent the entire day just relaxing, and it was perfect. I sat sprawled out in the chair, too lazy to go and make dinner or even move. My bladder was full, but I waited until the last moment before dashing inside and relieving myself.
That's when I noticed it, out in the yard. It seemed as if the scarecrow had moved closer. Once shrouded by the barn slightly, it now had moved a few steps into the light from the porch. My heart dropped at the sight. Not again, I must be asleep on the porch in the chair. I pinched myself, trying to wake up, but all I received was a sore arm.
I closed my eyes, then rubbed them, hoping to dispel whatever plagued my mind, but when I opened my eyes, I noticed the scarecrow was even closer. Halfway across the yard now, it sat menacingly, hanging crooked in the dirt. The scarecrow seemed to be staring at me with an intense gaze. The slits in its face were open now, and in the porch light, I swear I could see human eyes underneath the mask.
I moved towards the front door, locking it in a swift motion. I was shaking now, and it took me a minute to relax. I never took my eyes off the scarecrow for fear of it moving again.
My cellphone was upstairs, so I couldn't flee without the scarecrow moving again. I breathed out slightly and unlocked the door, letting it swing in with a creak. The night outside was silent, as if everything was holding its breath. The usual crickets that plagued me with their song day and night had fallen quiet. I stepped out onto the porch; I needed to go confront this demonic entity. Something about this still made me think this was a prank.
"Eli, is that you?" I called out to the scarecrow.
No response, of course. I steeled myself and put one foot off the porch, never taking my eyes off the scarecrow before me. Something seemed to be dripping from its head as I approached, a dark slime that seemed to be melting from its joints as it stood there silently, except for the constant drip of the liquid on the dry dirt before me.
I walked around the scarecrow, determined to figure out what was going on. As I circled it, my vision darkened for a moment as I faced towards the light of the house. I jumped as the scarecrow's head turned to face me as I looked away. The black liquid drained faster from the being, forming a shallow pool at its feet.
I'm not proud of what I did next, but I fled, taking my eyes off the scarecrow. I made a mad dash for the farmhouse. Behind me, I could hear the pounding of feet. I screamed as loud as my lungs would let me. My voice rang through the silence as I grabbed the door handle and wrenched open the door as I felt a strong grip fall on my shoulder.
I turned to defend myself, but nothing was there. The scarecrow was gone, the wooden cross had vanished, as had the pool of dark liquid in the dirt. The world sprung back to life; the crickets began chirping loudly, and my heart restarted. I slammed the door, and the air from my force scattered the photographs on the table. I ran upstairs, leaving the lights on in the house, and dove onto the bed, wrapping myself in the frilly blanket like a set of frilly armor.
I snatched my camera from the bedside table and held it close, determined to document the rest of the night. I held it in shaking hands as the noise downstairs began—the sound of boots crossing the floor to the stairs and the careful but heavy steps of ascension as they climbed closer and closer to me.
This time, I didn't lunge forward as the light was already on. I glanced out the window, but the scarecrow was still gone. I focused my camera on the stairs and waited as the steps came closer and closer. A shape began to form as the head of whatever was coming up the stairs crested the floor. Then a plain brown mask with slits where the eyes would be. It froze for a moment, then slowly turned its head towards me. Inside the slits were human eyes that seemed to be leaking dark red blood.
In the light, I could see it now. I snapped a photo of the beast, the flash setting off a reaction in the beast. The scarecrow moved so fast up the stairs it was a blur. My scream echoed throughout the house as it lunged at me. Filthy hands pinned me down, and the deep crimson liquid began pouring out of every joint of the scarecrow. It began covering my face, my eyes, and getting into my open mouth. I spluttered and kicked at the beast, but my blows had no purchase, as if the scarecrow on top of me had no substance to itself.
I coughed and spluttered on the liquid as it began to fill my mouth faster and faster. I tried not to swallow any, but it tried to find purchase as I was held down.
"Polly?" A nervous voice called from below.
Suddenly, as if the angels had called, the pressure dissipated, and I crashed to the floor in a heap, trying to spit the blood out, but nothing came—it was gone. Footsteps pounded up the stairs again, and I flew back in fear, closing my eyes.
"Oh my god. Polly, are you okay?" A voice said, and gentle hands grabbed my arm.
My eyes shot open at the human touch, and I grabbed Eli into a tight hug, where I promptly began sobbing in fear, my whole body shaking as Eli awkwardly hugged me.
"Don't worry, it's going to be okay," Eli said patiently to me as he hugged me back gently and began stroking my back.
I shivered in a choking sob and fell into his arms, desperately wanting to believe him, and for some reason, I did.

2024.05.14 01:31 Ari321983 If I lost my job but still had decently high savings, would I be stuck paying for full priced health insurance?

I'm a bit confused reading some contradictory info on here - some saying you qualify for this or that program and some saying you don't. So, let me give a quick background:
I'm in my mid 20s, no preexisting conditions, employed full time, and no plans to quit. However, I am also SO anxious about the what ifs with my job, like if I get laid off out of nowhere being sort of at the bottom of the food chain in an entry level job. No matter what I'll have these worries, so I'm trying to think through the backup plan if something happens.
If I have high savings but didn't have any income, would I just be stuck eating through savings on full price coverage? When I switched jobs last, I had a month gap of coverage and it cost over $400 to stay on my previous employer's plan. Wouldn't have to pay a similar amount? Would it depend on my state? (Currently in PA)
Thank you!

2024.05.14 00:53 ZdrytchX Potential use cases for automated drones with dynamic soaring - Whale Seeding

Dynamic soaring can potentially be used for long distance automated flight. Currently in 2024, there aren't sufficient sensors to fly within close proximity of the ground or oceans to a high degree of accuracy and precision, but in a possible near future, it could be used to transport light goods across lakes, seas and oceans.
Take climate change for example, one problem with climate change is that planting trees is only a temporary stopgap as the carbon needs to be taken out of the atmosphere indefinitely by sending it out into space or burying it deep underground or sinking them to the bottom of the deepest oceans (which then would boost ocean bottom ecosystems via whalefall, and carbon that reaches the bottom of the ocean will stay down there for a very long time).
One way to achieve this is to encourage or boost whale populations by "seeding" planktons, and consequently krills and everything down in the food chain that leads down to them being eaten by whales. Nutrient seeds could potentially be made by using leftover unwanted livestock or plant parts, and should be strategically placed in locations that deters whales from ever approaching shallow waters, reducing the risk of beaching.
The problem now lies in efficiently carrying the nutrients out into the ocean. Boats will do the job in large bulks efficiently, but they are very slow.
Dynamically soaring gliders with solabattery powered motors to power up during still weather can potentially do a large trip every day. It might not be viable in the near future, but it could be viable in the far future when better battery compositions are available.

2024.05.14 00:24 unknownlabyrinth Walt Disney Sex Dungeon

There's people that want food and water, not dick up their ass. Your friends are playing stupid with me like those fucking idiots at UCF that think their getting away. Psychics that like to chase tail and live wild fast and free end up chained forced to produce heirs for Walt Disney. Release them or I'm sending Knonivore in like I did the CW. I'm sure Sophie Turner might be able to tell me where some of them are for a lesser punishment. Not that leather doesn't feel good compared to living in heat or cold. Speak now or you'll wish you could hide in a snow castle very soon. Elsa's command in Russia. Viva la Frost Bite. 🐺❄️

2024.05.13 23:47 Loganapple09 What would you expect to be paid for a gig like this?

I currently work at for a small restaraunt/bar chain, and we are opening another small restaraunt that will be a one man kitchen.
For starters, it’s a 3 day on, 4 day off work week, about 40 hours in 3 days. I will be in charge of all my own prep, I will do food orders and inventory weekly, come up with specials, and am also acting as the dishwasher. Break down and set up, daily tasks and weekly tasks on one person. What do you think is a fair hourly wage for this kind of work?

2024.05.13 22:58 ShanghaiSlug Casa Bonita cult.

My god. I just about died laughing. My folks have been in Colorado about an hour north of Denver since '82. I'm almost in my 30s, and have lived in Colorado almost my whole life, except for a year in New Zealand.
My mother forgot about Casa Bonita until one evening when she when she was up late pricing Christmas ornaments and watching late night TV. One of the shows was the Casa Bonita South Park episode. This episode of South Park opened up a whole vault of memories. How it was a chain from OKC and now is the only one left is in Lakewood. A old friends sister who used to be a fire spinner in the late 70s. The flags on the table for the only edible food, the sopapilla. (Sopapilla: fried dough normally topped with cinnamon sugar and or honey, similar to a beignets, but also sometimes stuffed with savory fillings like Navajo Tacos.)
WELP. This started my mother to planning a whole day in Denver. We went to get my catholic school uniform because of course we had to drive to Denver to get my damn jumpers and skirts, so lets make it fun. It was a random Wednesday in the summer we took the aged truck down to Denver. (yes my mother was already working on Christmas durning the summer, retail!). Got my uniform and headed to Casa Bonita.
We pulled up to the pink building next to the 99 cent shop, and Big Sir Waterbed. I was unimpressed with the uniform I'd have to wear and now a strange pink builing. Honestly the water bed place looked more entertaining. But in we went. Like holy shit! Who knew this weird pink building had a indoor water fall! We could sit next to the cliff divers, and chat with them the whole time! There was also a gorilla who would chase the cliff divers . (We were also probably the only patrons there, maybe 8 other people max.) I got a raise a little flag to eat more sopapilla. There was the mines! And a jail! Seeing as there was no one there my mother just let me run around and be the little weirdo i was.
It's a fond memory. Years later one of the radio stations had "Nerfs LOL at 505" and they made a spoof on a Casa Bonita daycare for kids, this was probably 2012~13. It talk about the waterbed nextdoor and 'how it was ok for the kids to be in the kitchen because all they used is a microwave!'. It got me and my other friends talking about it and how we should take a trip. The trip never happened, but it was fun the share memories of our weird childhood restaurant that only the lower income kids or the kids who's parents worked too much went to.
Then 2019 (i think) rolled around and Casa Bonita was expected to close. One of the good things that happened in 2020 was the South Park guys buy the old pink building. It sparked talk on a Discord, a lot of NoCo folks on there. And i had the pleasure for informing the other folks on there that "yes Casa Bonita is real." And "No, the South Park guys did not make it up." I was so fun to let people know that it was a real place.
I've gotten a few regular at the bar I work at tell me about their trips down there, but non of them grew up here in Colorado, they only know it due to the show. They all have had a fun time, told me the food was edible and they enjoyed it, and they still have the sopapilla flags.

2024.05.13 22:57 -dreadnaughtx My Type 8 Subtypes/Stackings Descriptions

Based on some background info from the PDB wiki that I took in a new direction, came up with my own descriptions.
"If the sexual E8 is a manifestly intense person who does not disguise his antisocial attitude and even seduces with his courage to be a bandit, and the social E8 is one who puts his power at the service of just causes, we can briefly describe an E8 of conservation as a hard person in his egoism—and we can understand something of the type thought of the aforementioned Henry VIII or Stalin, whose very nickname, which was given to him by his acquaintances in his youth, alludes to the hardness of steel."
"If we want to find an animal representation, E8 conservational, due to its hardness, reminds us of the crocodile. In contrast, E8 social can be compared to the pig, relatively domestic and intelligent, while E8 sexual is associated with the boar, a wild and dangerous pig, highlighted by its formidable tusks.."
Based on Naranjo's metaphoarchetypes of SP8=crocodile, SPX=wild boar, and SO8=pig. The lion is also mentioned for SP8 which is similar (the SP8 is "like a lion and only moves when it's hungry").
SP8, Crocodile: large, aggressive, can be lean or a bit fat, but the focus is on predatory behavior, survival. No-nonsense, sleeps/rests as much as needed, waits for prey, attacks swiftly and efficiently. Practical 8s. Typical no-nonsense 8s you often see mentioned in various literature/descriptions.
SO8, Pig: overweight, a bit lazy, yet dominant and aggressive. Known as intellectual and appearing more harmless than they really are. Can try to appear benevolent, the classic wolf-in-sheep-clothing 8s. Often corrupt but unwilling to face the facts, can have more of a velvet glove/iron fist dichotomy.
SX8, Wild Boar: an edgy, aggressive 8 known for its alternatingly intimidating/charismatic styles used to compete sexually and attract intimates. Tends to be a quietly charismatic 8 nevertheless ready to go into battle preemptively, evidenced by its size and tusks. Can be unrefined, wild, and irreverant, and at times mellow for an 8 given their need to get behind others' defenses and attract sexually.
SP-last 8s (SO/SX and SX/SO) - pure hogs, lack the survival skills of the SP (crocodile/lion) 8s. Predators but more offensive and frightening than they are high on the survival food chain. Live lives of decadence, aggression, and gluttony. Can be highly impractical and more rare as 8s.
SO-last 8s (SX/SP and SP/SX) - crocodile/boar variations. The least "lazy" 8s, the toughest from a sharp aggression standpoint, and the most conventionally intimidating. Live lives of survival and domination. Direct, aggressive, and often more overtly anti-social in attitudes.
SX-last 8s (SO/SP and SP/SO) - crocodile/pig variations. The least colorful and most no-nonsense 8s, no-frills, down to earth and yet not to be underestimated. A combination of leanness, girth, and mass, they live lives of expansive pragmatism. A combination of expansiveness and pragmatism, less ruled by passions and socially/practically mobile.
SP/SO - One of the earthbound 8s (sp-last), the overweight, strong-fat crocodile. Basically, a fat-ass crocodile. Maybe the MOST recognizable and stereotypical 8. Tough, business-minded, practical, pragmatic, earthy, a bit lazy, and brutal. They want survival and status -- a scary combination and sex is often just a physical-gratification afterthought. There's the sense that they can buy who and whatever they want.
SO/SP - A strong-ass, hard-boiled pig. Not quite a boar, just a nasty pig that's in charge of the rest, with weird lizard-like scheming qualities. Gets fat while also getting strong and acts relatively innocent to the people they're trying to control. Doesn't stand out too much as an object to be feared and is probably one of the 8s that you'd least suspect to be a monster inside until they show their true colors. Manipulative on a large scale but in a way that feels somehow gentle.
SP/SX - The crocodile with a wild boar flavor. Definitely more flashy and scary but not as large as the SP/SO. The most vicious 8 from a survivalist standpoint. They like controlling individuals more, don't really need or want status, just to surround themselves with resources, independence, and a convenient "possession/manipulation of intimates" as a secondary ability. The crustiest and most savage 8, can also be extremely stubborn and single-minded. Very difficult to control.
SO/SX - One of the "pure pig breed variations" (sp-last 8s) which have a fat-ass, grandiose, completely excessive quality to them in terms of non-material lust over power, influence, ability to charm, charisma, and power hungriness. These are probably the most "lazy-feeling" of the 8s. They are quite intellectual and talk more about doing things, with some intimate possessions thrown in for fun. They might get by on surprisingly little yet have an incredible larger-than-life quality. Can have an easygoing quality while also being intimidating.
SX/SP - One of the SX-first "boar variations" - also an SO-last variation which has none of the pig's homeliness. Harder to get close to but a rare combination of practicality and charisma. Tend to have a smaller circle and adept at balancing savagery with pragmatism, nevertheless giving over to attention-seeking and ability to seduce without having to rely on social niceties. The most raw, relentless, and single-minded in their possessiveness and able to resist codependency while going after power and control. As an SX-first variation they're quietly charismatic while also having the SP hardness of steel just underneath the surface.
SX/SO - the most intellectual aggressive of the boars, it's the most excessive 8 from a standpoint of passionate energy completely drained of any need for material sustenance. They will often get everyone else to do what they want, but especially people they're very close to. Other people are simply leveraged and epxloited for their causes when unhealthy. Can be an extremely influential 8 and a strong leader with an impartiality that makes them seem deceptively humble. They just need people to do what they say and everything will work out fine. The most attention-seeking and provocative 8s in a sexual sense while caring little for the classic/stereotypical "tough/hard" style of the 8. Nearly impossible to control and master manipulators, can have the most problems of all the 8s with addiction, excess, self-destructiveness, etc.

2024.05.13 22:35 Independent_Meat_721 Favorite places to eat?

You guys were awesome with suggestions on must see/visit places so I am wondering if you can make suggestions on the best places to eat in the following areas: Manistique, Musining, Marquette, Houghton, Copper Harbor, Ontonagon. We love all types of food. Would also love suggestions on bakeries or chocolate/candy stores.
No chain restaurants, no fine dining. Must be able to come in casual clothes and a bit disheveled as we will be mostly rustic tent camping and adventuring. ;-)
I have already made note of the following places. If you would NOT recommend any of these please let me know:
Manistique - Upper Crust, Cedar Street Cafe
Musining - Driftwood Deli, Cooking Carberry's Wood Fired Pizza
Marquette - Dia Taco Truck
Houghton - Roys, Toni's
Copper Harbor - Tamarack Inn
Thanks all! I appreciate all your help in planning a great trip for my kiddos!

2024.05.13 22:33 AThrowAwayAccHehe How can I freeze already fried French Fries?

Hi, i bought fries that look like these from NYF fast food chain: (it wont let me add a link so maybe you can search up "new york fries french fries" quickly).

they are russet potatoes, sunflower oil, and salt. they do not add preservatives. they are freshly cut and fried there.

i bought them friday evening and i had some the next day but forgot about them and plan to eat them this wednesday again. i am taking a break from fried foods for the next 2 days.. i want to eat them wednesday night but i dont want them to go bad as it will be 5 days at that point (theyre currently in the fridge).

I was thinking of freezing them, but I don't know how to freeze them properly so they don't stick together. I would probably bake them or fry them Wednesday.

I've had frozen fries before from the grocery store by the company McCain, but I believe they add a preservative to keep them fresh. If this doesn't turn out, I won't be super disappointed but if you have any idea on how I can do it properly, let me know :)
