2024.05.14 02:40 Brilliantmind1997 26 [F4M] Georgia,USA -Seeking a long term monogamous relationship (serious inquiries only)

This is my last attempt for awhile. *Do Not message or add me just to unfriend me or ghost me. * Greetings future partner ❤️ I'm still searching for you. I have to be honest and say that I am losing hope trying to find you. Please be somewhere. I want my search for a partner to be over. I'm seeking adventure in my life with someone I can call a forever partner. I'm tired of the loneliness and the sheltered lifestyle that I've lived. It would mean a lot of you could read through this post so that I could make sure we are compatible. Even if we start off as friends that would be fine.
Here's to new beginnings and new connections. PLEASE make sure you READ through the WHOLE POST also please be respectful when messaging me * *If you're the type to be impatient, block, or ghost easily, then save both of us the trouble and DO NOT message me! I'm not trying to come off as mean but I'd much rather you not message me if you're the type of person to do that. If something isn't working just let me know. We're all adults.
Greetings, I am seeking a long term relationship monogamous with the end goal being matrimony. I am not one for playing around and being used casually as it doesn’t suit me personally. Ideally I'd prefer a man that has his life already in place so that I can be able to share life with him and for him to take care of me. I would expect my future man to have a fiscally stable job and be able to support me and our future family. I wouldn’t be opposed to being a housewife. There are few reasons why I would like to work or work part time: 1) Being abandoned with nothing, 2) I want to feel fulfilled and not bored. Happy to discuss possible dynamics, I'm flexible. I would love a synergistic partnership where we are both able to mold our minds and fill our hearts with warm affection. I will be there to support you throughout your journey and celebrate every moment with you. I want you to be proud of you just as you are with me. I want to show you that you are truly cared for and appreciated by gestures of love such as massages and other forms of entertainment. I would expect the same from you as well. Even if we are both working adults we can still make our relationship work in the best way possible. I have seen this come out well for people who are dedicated and willing to make their relationships work. For a strong relationship to occur I would expect effective (transparent) communication from you. If you are going to be busy just be honest and let me know you won’t be able to talk to me.Also, if you need your space both mentally and physically let me know. I understand that we all have our lives to attend to but it is incredibly important for people in a relationship to be transparent when circumstances arise in a timely manner in order to avoid future conflict. If this relationship isn’t going to work I would expect you to tell me and not ghost or block me before giving me a reason why. We are all adults so I would expect nothing but maturity. Starting out I don’t want the pressure of sex to be pushed onto me. I’d rather let time tell in all of its glory.
Now onto my true introduction
My name is Angie and I'm from Georgia in the United States. I've been lonely for quite some time and find it hard to find a soulmate in IRL. What I'm looking for is someone who I can connect with and have wholesome conversations with. I want to be able to treat my future soulmate well just as much as they do me. The biggest part of a long lasting relationship is the ability to communicate openly without worry. I'd love it if my significant other has a dark sense of humor and continues to crack me up non-stop. As cheesy as it may sound I long for those late night calls and cute texts. I want for us to drive out the very best in each other; become our support system. A little bit about me is that I grew up in Florida and not too long ago moved to Georgia. I'm currently in college to become an RN but I'm also passionate about cosmetic chemistry and nutrition so I may seek to build my own business in the future. I'm passionate about science and theoretical applications especially within the medical field. I'd appreciate it if my partner is open minded about varying topics and welcomes healthy conversations. Appearance wise I'm open to seeing if we have a connection and feel as long as you are well groomed and practice basic hygiene you are good. Although, I must say that attraction is key in a relationship so I will have to go off on that as well. To add on, I enjoy playing video games, exercising (I've been slacking off lately), cooking and baking (vegan), playing board games, reading, exploring nature, playing sports (basketball and soccer) for fun, and trying new experiences. I hope to save up and travel someday. It would be nice for my partner to be able to set up our travel itinerary.
My Physical Description:
I am a black woman who’s twenty five years old (almost 26 in December) with Afro-Carribean, Japanese and Swedish ancestry. I’d still consider myself black presenting since that’s more along the lines of what I appear as phenotypically. I have dark brown curly hair (Mainly 3c type curls) and brown eyes. I am 5 '4 on the thicker spectrum (not at all obese but thick boned and have thunder thighs). I am trying to exercise more to become fit. I used to weight lift when I was younger but since then have lost lean muscle mass. Having a partner that is willing to work out together sometimes is rather rewarding. A man who has drive and appeal is incredibly sexy. I would also like to point out that I am curvy and noticeable in certain aspects (I’ll leave it up to you to decide).
*You have to be MINIMUM 21 to date me *
If distance will be a problem and you aren't willing to make it work then DON'T MESSAGE ME!!
If you will be too busy to pursue a relationship then DO NOT contact me!! * *Again, No ghosters or blockers!! Seeking a person who seeks a relationship with God and/or is open to one Must be free from venerial diseases and must be willing to get tested(will discuss) Bonus points if you're vegan Ideally I would like someone that is taller than me (I’m 5’4) I prefer a man that is fit or trying to be. I'd prefer someone who is fiscally stable and able to support the both of us* A big red flag for me is smokers. It isn't good for your health nor is it sexy to me.* It's important for me to point out that I want children in the future and need someone who may want that as well. If you're interested in how I look and want to know more about me, message me. Although I don’t make it a huge deal, I do prefer White and East Asian men. But I do love all types of men and welcome them. As stated before I emphasize communication and would prefer you to be honest and say if something is wrong instead of ghosting or blocking without stating the reason. Fair warning if I can be socially awkward sometimes and don't know what to talk about so please be patient with me as I'm learning to be better conversation wise

2024.05.14 01:18 Barth22 Retaining wall advice

I am planning to build a fire pit on a sloped hill. For a 14' by 14' plot the rise/run is going to be a total of a 4 foot drop. To accomplish this, I am planning to make a tiered retaining wall using the cheapest aesthetically pleasing blocks I can find, leaning towards these from lowes.
I have tackled aggressive DIY projects before but have never made a cinder block retaining wall. I fully anticipate to back fill with gravel, and maybe even put in a french drain for adequate drainage. The plan is two-tiered walls consisting of 5 layers of brick each, giving me 6" below grade and 2' above.
My question to you fine experts is, do I need rebar? I don't plan to fill these with concrete, I was hoping sand or gravel would be sufficient given the small size of the walls. The Lowes website says "No pins or mortar required, rear lip and interlocking joints secure each stone". Can't wait to get your advice!

2024.05.14 00:35 FelixIgnis Gege's out sick so I wrote 260 for him

Ryomen Sukuna faces the two challengers, Itadori Yuji and Aoi Todo. For the first time in more than a millennium, the King of Curses found himself truly displeased with a fight. Not only did the brat have the nerve to exist as a prison for him, but he also refused to die.
The world of the Heian Era had been simple, even boring. Yet in that bloody, hellish landscape that Sukuna hailed from, he had found meaning in strength, in being the strongest. The world and its beings existed for him to savor and crush, just as he had today in Shinjuku. Gojo Satoru, Hajime Kashimo, Maki Zenin, Higuruma Hiromu, the death painting, and all the fodder between them; they had all served their purpose. They had fought, finding their purpose in their struggle against the King. And he in turn had savored the flavors of their fleeting lives. Just as things should be. Yet alone among them, Itadori Yuji refused to be chewed up. He alone challenged Sukuna in a manner that could not be cut down or burnt to cinders.
[Flashback]
Todo: If this plan works, Sukuna will be in a position where he cannot open his domain. Knowing the man my brother is, he will use this opportunity to rescue Fushiguro. However, if Okkotsu’s plan has failed by this point. . .
Mei Mei: I take it you’ve developed a plan of your own, Mr. Todo?
Todo holds up a copy of Yuki Tsukumo’s soul research.
Todo: The brother of my brother has inherited my Master’s knowledge. With this, I should be able to reach Fushiguro myself.
[Present]
All three fighters had been blessed by the Sparks of Black. But among them, Sukuna was the only one who found his Cursed Technique burnt out.
Yuji: TODO!
Todo: NOW, MY BROTHER!
Narrator: Among all of the cursed items available, there was one that resonated with Todo’s soul. Todo shed the cloth hiding the hand that had been butchered by the Cursed Spirit Mahito. In its place, he revealed a mechanical arm belonging to one of Mechamaru’s former mechanical puppets. Feeling the beats of Boogie Woogie echo in his soul, Todo clapped, switching places with Sukuna. The King of Curses was well aware of the cursed technique, but even knowing it, he found it disorienting in his weakened state.
Yuji: BLACK FLASH
Sukuna braced against the ground, sliding backwards from the impact. Even at a reduced output from constant Reverse Cursed Technique and Simple Domain use, Sukuna felt the punch strike the border between his own soul and Megumi’s. The King of Cursed muttered under his breath, immediately finding himself swapped with Yuji and Todo in front of him. With an injured hand, he blocked the next swapped punch. Blow after blow was rained on him by the dynamic duo. Perhaps with his Cursed Technique, the King may have been able to stave off the unending onslaught. However, as a result of his collapsed domain and numerous binding vow, Sukuna found himself with yet another weapon less. Todo switched with Yuji, who was then swapped with Sukuna. . . A series of warped blows that echoes through the remains of Shinjuku. Finally, Todo appeared before Sukuna, preparing a mighty kick. However, the King of Curses was yet to be defanged completely. . .
Sukuna: . . .Repulsion.
Sukuna had chanted incantations under his breath, recovering enough output to cast dismantle. A bloody wound appeared on Todo’s chest, yet the sorcerer did not recoil. He had already prepared himself mentally for the wound.
Todo, in his inner monologue: This searing pain, this severed flesh. . . This is only a fraction of the pain you’ve endured, isn’t it, my brother? Yet you haven’t given up, not even on a man as boring as Megumi.
Todo, still in his monologue: Will you let that stand, Aoi Todo?! Will you leave your brother alone when another has already given his life for him?! Are you content to stand on the sidelines while everyone else has given their all?!
Todo, STILL in his monologue: My brother has already surpassed me, surpassed all of us. That’s just the sort of man he is. Even then, I can still do this much for him. . .
Todo: BLACK FLASH!!
Bloodied, Todo sends a kick upwards, striking at Sukuna’s chin. Before the King of Curses could block, he found his good hand skewered by a stream of blood.
Yuji: Piercing Blood!
Streaks of black and red clouded Sukuna’s vision. A surge of cursed energy embraced the point of contact, but as Sukuna reeled from the strike, he realized something far worse had been touched. Something that only the damn brat should have been able to talk a hold of.
Todo: Stand up, Fushiguro.
Megumi: . . . That’s enough.
Megumi: Their blood. . . Gojo-sensei, Tsumiki, so many. . . On my hand, their blood is. . .
Todo: . . . Yes. Their blood is on your hands. But your folly, your arrogance. . .
Todo grabs Megumi by the collar, forcibly raising him.
Todo: IS THAT YOU THINK THEIR DEATHS ARE ON YOU ALONE!
Todo: We’re sorcerers, all of us! And yet they still died. Because we weren’t strong enough, because we weren’t there when they needed us. . . And you think you have the right to take on all of that yourself?! You can pity those you couldn’t save all you want. But right now, there is a man amongst men trying to save you.
Todo drops Megumi, who slumps to his knees.
Todo: Even with the blood on your hands, you still hold something precious in them. What they entrusted you with. . . Because even as they died, they did not curse you. So, stand up and reveal their blessings. Save my brother, so that he can save you.
Todo: Megumi Fushiguro, I will ask you this only one more time, so don’t bother with any half-assed answers. What kind of person is your type?
Megumi: My type. . . My type is guys like Itadori Yuji.
Todo’s eyes widen, finally approving of Megumi.
Sukuna: BLACK FLASH
Debris flew into the air as Todo flew across the charred ruins of Shinjuku. Upon hitting his fifth Black Flash, the King of Curses finally recovered his capacity for reverse cursed technique. The vicious wound Maki Zenin had left in his sternum finally began to mend. However, there was something else that had been awakened along with Sukuna’s output.
As Sukuna approached on Yuji, fully intending to end his nephew for good, a pool of shadows manifested beneath his feet. With his domain collapsed and his control over Megumi’s body weakened by the soul punches, Sukuna’s innate domain had finally become vulnerable to the one person who could disrupt it from within.
Narrator: Rising from the depths of malevolence and despair, the prodigal son of Gojo Satoru awakens!

2024.05.13 23:27 maz1324 Structural Engineer recommendation

My home is experiencing stair step cracking in the basement cinder block wall. I reached out to several foundation repair companies many of which have very different solutions.
Does anyone have recommendations for an engineer that can evaluate the issue and make recommendations for a solution?

2024.05.13 23:18 Pinchaser71 Forever tomato cages (for larger gardens)

Forever tomato cages (for larger gardens)
For as long as I’ve been gardening I’ve had tomato cages like these that I made. Every year I get countless people asking me where I got them. Well… I technically didn’t GET them anywhere, I made them. I only made them once before and they lasted for decades.
Unfortunately, we moved a few times over the years and that aren’t exactly something you’re going to throw in a moving truck with your furniture. Plus they’d take up a lot of room in a truck. Needless to say they were left behind. I wouldn’t be surprised to find them still there.
Moving forward to now, 15 years later I’m finally in an appropriate home to start over with what will likely be my finally batch I’ll ever need. I’m including a how to with photos if you’d like to make these for yourself. I figured since so many people ask me locally, maybe you all in this subreddit may appreciate it.
What you need: “Concrete reinforcement mesh” rolls, bolt cutters, needle nose pliers, several heavy bricks (pavers, cinder blocks) or other heavy objects, gloves and safety glasses.
Photo 1. Here is a roll of “Concrete reinforcement mesh” purchased from the local hardware store as shown. It’s basically a roll of rusty steel wire. This is a 50’ roll which will make exactly 10 cages. It comes in 50,100,150 and 200 foot rolls. 200’ rolls will require 2 people to move it, this stuff is HEAVY! Pro tip: if you’re throwing this in a van/SUV be sure to bring a crappy blanket to lay down inside, unless you want rust on your interior.
Photo 2: Roll out the mess on a flat surface and hold it down with the bricks. Otherwise it will roll back up on you.
Photo 3: Count 10 square holes from the end lengthwise. Approximately 5’.
Photo 4: using the bolt cutters (or good strong wire cutters), start cutting each wire across as shown. Make sure to cut each wire equal length all the way down trying to get as close to flush as you can.
Note: Keep a couple pavers handy until you get to the last few wires to cut. Place one on the side that your cutting off and one on the roll side. The wire will want to roll up and you don’t want to get cut, scratched or poked when it springs back! Obviously the tighter it’s round the more it’s going to want to unroll and spring up. Just please use caution as right now you have freshly cut sharp ends of rusty springy wire that will mess you up! If not, I hope your Tetanus shot is up to date!
Photo 5: This is what it should look like when you’re finished with your cuts. You should now have a 5’ x 5’ square of the wire mess with 3 flat sides and 1 with cut wires.
Photo 6: using your needle nose pliers, bend the end of the wires you just cut to form hooks. Try to get them all uniform in size so your length stays consistent, you’ll see why in photo 8 & 9.
Photo 7: using the bolt cutters, start cutting one of the flat sides off as shown, similar to what you just did cutting it to length.
Photo 8: This is what the side should look like when you’ve finished cutting off the flat side. You should now have a 5’x5’ square piece of wire mesh with two flat sides, one side with hooks and one side with straight cut wires.
Photo 9: Now evenly roll the side with the hooks to the opposite end and place a couple of the hooks on the end. It will form a circle. When a couple are secured now you can stand it on the end you cut off in photo 7. With it standing, secure the remaining loose hooks around the end wire as shown. If you didn’t make your hooks uniform length as stated then you’ll be having issues on this step. If they are too short or uneven they won’t reach or make your cage not round.
Photo 10: using needle nose, squeeze the hooks closed all the way down so the wire can’t slip out. It takes a bit of force to close them. When they are closed, this is what they should look like.
Photo 11: Once all the hooks are closed you notice the cage is rather egg shaped. Lay it on its side with the hooks on the bottom and simply pressed down like you’re going to flatten it. All you’re trying to do is make it round instead of egg shaped.
Photo 12: once its round you can safely stand it back up standing on the cut off end.
Photo 13: Take it to your garden and place it where you’d like
Photo 14: Once it’s where you want it, simply step on the bottom wire and the cut wires will easily sink into the ground holding it in place.
Photo 15: TADA! You now have a 5’ high about 18” diameter tomato cage. It will last you virtually a lifetime. They don’t blow over from wind once you stick them in the ground. They certainly don’t bend easy like this expensive cheaply made flimsy funnel shaped ones you can buy. The 6”x6” holes give you very easy access to pick your tomatoes and to pluck weeds from around your plants. My tomato plants always loved these cages and grew up tall and strong from many years.
Storage of the cages is the one downfall. You could of course keep them in place in the garden all winter if you choose. Otherwise you can stack them with them laying on their side. Obviously since the ends are rusty steel spikes, you may want to stack them with that end butt up to a fence out something where nobody will be walking behind the stack getting shanked.
The alternative is instead of cutting these with the hooks like I do, you could instead cut them flush and hold them together using zip ties. In the fall you could just cut them off and stack the 5’x5’ squares of flat mesh. It’s up to you but not my preferred method as zip tires like to break and get brittle from the weather.
Anyway, hopefully you guys like these tomato cages. I also hope my instructions are clear. It’s easy to think they are when you’re there who knows what you are doing, more difficult when you not. If you have any questions please ask. Also, if you like these and make them, let me know!
Two last things... Avoid bending the wires you are using as spikes sticking in the ground. Bending them too many times will break them off! On the upside, if you break them off you can always cut another row off the bottom and you’re good as new. You’ll just lose 6” in height.
Second, you can make these cages for other plants like peppers, eggplants or whatever too. You’d likely make them narrower half the height. For tomatoes, these are the perfect size for spacing the plants out and height wise.

2024.05.13 21:15 Nitrous_Pilot Shed options

Hi All,
Looking for advice on determining the best type of shed based on my needs. I'm looking to get a shed that is 14' x 20' and having it placed on a concrete slab. This is to replace an older shed that has shifted while it was on gravel pad sitting on cinder blocks. The wood around the gravel pad and the shed itself started to rot and shift. Since it was installed by the previous owner, I don't know if it was a DIY or professionally done. Either way, I'm against going with with something that will be a problem for me years down the road.
The shed will be used to store lawn equipment, gas, oil and holiday decorations. The heaviest thing that will be in there is a 42" deck riding lawn mower. Everything that I see online are prebuilt with floors. Do people just drop prebuilt sheds on top of concrete slabs? Can I even ask for a prebuilt shed to have the floor removed and placed directly on the concrete slab? (My backyard has limited clearance and the "pre-built" shed will actually have to be built on site anyway)
Also, should I insulate the shed? I live in MD and it does snow/freeze here, but I'm worried that I could end up trapping moisture with the lawn equipment and creating mold.

Hello Guys,
I built a bar in my basement and I want to get a decent sound system but I don't know anything about speakers, ohms, watts, channels, amps etc. Reason why I would like to get a plug and play "kit". My budget is $800-$1000 but I would like to stay closer to $800 or even less if possible.
Here is some extra info that may or may not help:
I was looking a these options:
https://www.parts-express.com/Commercial-Six-Speaker-Sound-System-for-Bar-Restaurant-Brewery-Package-with-FREE-Wi-Fi-Strea-300-663?quantity=1
https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-DA120R-120W-70V-2U-Rack-Mount-Mixer-Amplifier-with-4-5-1-4-Black-2-Way-Indo-247-5120?quantity=1
One more thing. I'm not against getting speakers and amp separated I can hard wired myself if you guys recommend it. I just don't know what type of ohms and watts speakers goes with what type of amps.

2024.05.13 19:23 Relative-Obscurity I'm a widower. I found out my wife is living inside my house somewhere.

I remember the first time I heard it.
I was leaning back on my couch, watching TV, all alone in my house, just like any other night…
…When I heard a cough.
COUGH. COUGH.
But not just any cough.
A woman's cough.
And not just any woman's cough.
My wife's.
The only catch was, she had been missing at the time, having disappeared a few months prior, after a trip to the store, never to be found, and presumed... the worst thing that could be presumed.
So I did what seemed to make sense at the time, and chalked the sound up to a phantom laugh.
But not a phantom like a ghost. I didn't think she haunted the house or anything.
It was more like, the way people who lost limbs still felt them. So too, did I still feel my wife's presence in the house. Or so I rationalized.
But then a few months later… it happened again.
COUGH. COUGH.
And then a year after that… yet again.
COUGH. COUGH.
It happened enough times, between the years that my wife had disappeared, and the fifth anniversary of her disappearance, that I began to grow... afraid of it.
So I blocked it out.
Until one day, when I just so happened to be sitting on the floor, back to the wall, drinking away my sorrows, and wondering why she, of all people, had to disappear, I heard the sound again.
COUGH. COUGH.
But this time, it was... different.
This time, I felt a subtle reverberation, and heard what sounded like a hollow echo.
I immediately stood up, turned around slowly, and looked at the wall.
It was in that moment, that something crossed my mind.... that had never crossed it before.
What if the sound wasn't coming from inside the house, but between its walls?
It was such a disturbing thought, that my hands and body began shaking violently.
If the sound was coming from a place that I hadn't searched yet, then it might be real.
And if it was real…
…Then who knows what horrors lay behind the walls.
But how could she even survive in such a place? I wondered.
I found out the next day, when I visited a contractor, who had helped us renovate a couple of the rooms in the house, when we had first bought it, years before.
"I’ve been hearing noises inside the walls. And I have reason to believe that a very large animal might be living in there.” I explained to him nervously, unable to tell him what I really thought. “Is there enough space, for someone - I mean something, to live comfortably in there?”
"Well, let me see.” He said, as he rummaged through his files, pulling out the original floor plans to my house, and laying them out on the table.
He stood there, studying the blueprint for a minute, before finally pointing to it. “Honestly, yeah, there’s more than enough space in there.”
Sure enough, when I looked down at where he was pointing, I saw a huge pocket of empty space between the rooms, almost as large as the rooms themselves.
“You want me to recommend you a good exterminator?” He offered, “My buddy’s solid, and pretty cheap too.”
“No, I'm okay.” I declined, before gesturing to the plans. “Mind if I take these with me?"
But before he could even reply, I had snatched them off the table, hopped in my car, and peeled off.
As I sped home, a million, terrible, thoughts raced through my mind.
Has she really been alive, inside the house, this whole time? Why would she be in there? What is she capable of? Is my life at risk? Should I go in there?
My first instinct was to smash through the walls, and confront her, but when I finally got back, I chickened out, and instead, tried, once again, to block the whole thing out of my mind.
But the thought of her living inside the walls of my home, while I went about my day, continued to haunt me, and I eventually built up the courage to go in.
Remembering an area of flooring in the ceiling of the basement, that had rotted away, and connected to the very area that the contractor had pointed to in the floor plans, I went down to the cellar, grabbed my ladder, and crawled up into the space between the walls.
And what I saw on the other side… was terrifying.
Scattered everywhere, were the abandoned possessions of someone who had clearly been living in there for years. The place was littered with everything from empty cans of food, to old water bottles, to clothes and books, and a thick layer of dust covered everything.
But the strangest thing of all… was the sheer number of peep holes that I found, poked through the walls into my living room, kitchen, and bedroom, that I clearly hadn't seen from the other side.
I then turned the corner into the next "room," and saw what looked like a trap door to the backyard, that she must have used sparingly over the years, likely whenever I left the house, to scavenge for food and water.
And when I finally got to the last "room," I found...
...My wife. Sitting there in a tattered dress, head down, reading a book, her back to me.
"Eventually, I conjured up enough courage to say something. "Honey!"
But just as I feared, she did not greet me with a warm embrace.
Instead, she immediately whipped around and screamed, “You!”
That’s when I saw her face, for the first time in five years. A face that now looked much older, and much more emaciated, from what must have been long periods of starvation.
"Honey, it's ok! It's just me! I just want you to know that I love you." I tried to reassure her.
But she wasn’t reassured.
"You? Love me? How dare you say those words!"
"What are you talking about? I've been mourning you for years.”
"That's what you call it?"
“Honey, what are you doing in here?”
"I needed to know."
"Needed to know what?"
"Whether you actually loved me. Whether you'd miss me when I was gone."
“And I did. I cried for a year straight.”
"Yeah, and what about her?"
"Her?"
"The woman. That you brought home that night. Into our house?"
"Dear, you had been gone for a year. And I didn't even enjoy it. I was sad, and lonely, and trying to-"
"Move on?"
"Yes! It's what people do when their partners are gone. It’s horrible, but they eventually have to."
“Leave me! Or you'll regret coming in here."
"But honey. I'll do anything."
"Then show me."
"Show you?"
"Go back to the house. And show me you still long for me.” She commanded, before warning, “And if you ever bring another woman here for a night, it’ll be your last.”
And so, I returned to the house, afraid of what she might do, and at the same time too afraid to leave, while she stayed inside its walls, to continue watching me, day and night.
Still to this day, whenever I hear the sound of her coughing, from behind the walls…
COUGH. COUGH.
...It sends shivers down my spine, and I wonder... when she might decide to emerge, and what she might do to me when she emerges.

2024.05.13 19:17 Fun-Lock4401 Crows, trains, and automobile horns: Sopranos tips hat to Godfather with sound effects in death scenes

I'm reposting this in a different version in case anyone missed it when I posted a couple weeks back. I'm just really curious if this has ever been discussed any where before, and also thanks to all those whose posts on this sub helped me put this together.
SUMMARY: The TV program The Sopranos inserted the sound effects of crows, trains, and automobile horns during a large proportion of its death scenes, as well as some number of death-related scenes. This use of sound effects in death and death-related scenes, appears to be a tribute and imitation of the film The Godfather, which also employed the sounds of crows, trains, and automobile horns during several death scenes or death-related scenes. In The Sopranos this usage of sound effects started as early as the second episode of the first season, and doing a non-exhaustive search I have so far found it in around 24 episodes of The Sopranos, sometimes in multiple scenes in the same episode. There is also one usage specifically of the sound of a crow in the final episode which can be interpreted as suggesting that Tony was at least in danger of dying during the final scene at Holsten’s. This all may sound crazy but if you go and watch dozens of death scenes from the show you will see it, and you can use my list with time stamps to find them.
My blog entry figuring out how I figured this out and crediting the other members of this sub whose posts helped me put this together: https://sopranosdeathsounds.wordpress.com/2024/04/17/crows-trains-and-automobile-horns-sounds-of-death-on-the-sopranos/
Blog entry with list of known occurrences of crow, train, and automobile horn sound effects in death and death-related scenes:
https://sopranosdeathsounds.wordpress.com/2024/04/17/examples-of-crow-train-and-automobile-horn-sounds-in-the-sopranos/
EXCERPT FROM THE LIST: (This is not all the examples at the blog entry, which is likely not all the examples at the show as I haven't checked every scene in every episode. Also NOTE: Because I used Max streaming service to watch the show and it only provides accurate and reliable time stamps for the time remaining, all time stamps refer to time remaining if watching on Max)
S1 E2: “46 Long”
-11:13 In the scene where the driver of a truck being hijacked by Brendan Filone is accidentally shot and killed, starting soon after the driver turns off the truck, if you listen carefully there are numerous sounds of varying volumes from an invisible train in the background, including train horns, a fast moving train, and various train-related knocking noises.
S1 E4: “Meadowlands”
-45:56 After Christopher finds Brendan Filone’s dead body in the bath tub a truck horn sounds three times, and then at -45:53 as the scene cuts from Adriana hugging a distraught Christopher to the hallway at AJ’s school there is an unexplained foghorn-like sound.
S1: E10 “A Hit Is A Hit”
-50:31 a split second after Paulie shoots the drug trafficker a car horn sounds in the street outside the apartment.
S1 E11: “Nobody Knows Anything”
15:55 just as Makazian starts to climb onto the bridge railing to jump off and kill himself, you hear a particularly loud truck air horn in the background. During his jump the traffic noise from the bridge goes quiet and when it returns after he hits the water the first sound is a car horn.
S1 E13: “I Dream of Jeanie Cusamano”
20:00 Crows, along with other birds, are heard in the background throughout the sequence where Mikey “Fuckfaceitis” Palmice is pursued through the woods by Paulie and Christopher and finally executed in a hail of bullets after a brief exchange. The crows start around -20:00, return at -19:30, and again at -1915, and then basically go on with only brief interruptions until about -18:00 as the crows become louder and more agitated in their cawing as the tension in the scene increases and as the final hail of bullets execute Palmice.
S2 E8: “Full Leather Jacket”
-2:43 A loud truck or train air horn sounds from an invisble source after Sean Gismonte has repeatedly shot Christopher and before Christopher has returned fire and killed Sean.
-2:28 After Sean Gismonte is killed while still in his car seat, the car rolls slowly forward and then hits another causing its alarm to go off.
S3 E9: “Another Toothpick”
25:11 After Bobby Baccalieri Sr. pulls up outside the house where Mustang Sally is hiding out, and while he is still sitting in the car outside, at -25:11 crows can be heard cawing along with sounds of a train when no train is visible. At -25:01 the crows can be heard again. In the next scene Baccalieri Sr. murders Mustang Sally and Sally’s friend Carlos, and in the following scene Baccalieri Sr. also dies in car crash — after collapsing onto his car horn at -19:58.
S5 E12: “Long Term Parking”
-9:22 After Silvio’s second shot executing Adriana, crows caw in the background.
S5 E13: “All Due Respect”
-19:59 Immediately after Tony Soprano shoots Tony Blundetto in the face on the front porch of the farm house, a crow caws in the background.
S6 E18 : “Heidi and Kennedy”
-40:58 A crow is cawing outside the house when Tony is awoken in bed by his maid the morning after killing Christopher, and also in the cut immediately after the brief scene of Kelly screaming when she gets the news about his death.
-33:47 A crow is cawing in background in backyard as Tony goes out to throw the Cleaver mug into the bushes.
S6 E 19: “The Second Coming”
-33:18 Crow cawing in background outside as AJ looks out at pool.
-33:03 Crow cawing in background as AJ sits on diving board with plastic bag and cinder block preparing to drown himself in pool.
-31:39 Crow cawing in background as Tony walks towards front door of house after parking out front, as AJ is struggling in the pool while still tied to cinderblock.
S6 E 20: “Blue Comet”
-16:04 Tony is in his backyard working on his pool and sweeping leaves and Janice is there talking to him. As Janice leaves Tony is angry and saying nasty things about Bobby, and as he talks about Bobby a crow caws in the background.
-15:44 Seconds later Silvio comes to speak with Tony and as he walks up a crow caws in the background.
Immediately after Silvio speaks to Tony, we see Bobby get shot and killed. Immediately after that we see Silvio get shot and left in a coma.
S6 E21 “Made in America”
-10:16 Tony is raking leaves in his backyard and then stops and looks up and around contemplatively. As he does a crow can be heard faintly but definitely briefly cawing in the background. Immediately after this Carmela walks up to Tony and tells them they are going to dinner at Holsten’s.

Advice for Improving a Deep Pond

I've inherited a pretty neglected pond and really want to invest some time and resources into it to make it into something special. I have some different floating plants, and submersible plants being delivered soon, along with a new filtration system to clean the water.
The issue I've run into is seeing as the pond is a steep 4-foot drop, it's been very hard for me to think of ways to layer in marginal plants, and other greenery that I see in a lot of the posts on here. I've read elsewhere that I could potentially stack cinder blocks in the pond and then add marginal plants on them, but I was wondering if there was perhaps any other suggestions?

2024.05.13 15:31 ManicMakerStudios A little over 3 years of development on a procedural voxel terrain generator (in pictures!)

I don't normally post my work because most of my time is spent between an IDE and a stack trace, but I've arrived at a milestone where I thought it might be worthwhile to share a bit of the process up to this point.
I'm using Unreal Engine with C++. I haven't used any blueprints or third party libraries (outside UE) for anything.
The game will be a 2.5d adventure game (Terraria would be a fair comparison, just to give a more clear idea.) My original plan was to create a procedural mesh that could be deformed by digging or impacts/explosions. Think of it as being like a tuna can on its side, and this ended up being my very first prototype object for the game:
Tuna can from the front. Being my first mesh displayed in the Unreal Editor, I was quite proud of it so I shared it on social media and even though I described it, the only response was from someone asking, "What am I looking at?" That's when I learned that just because it's interesting and exciting for me doesn't mean anyone else cares.
Tuna can from the back showing the mesh structure. This is more significant than the front view, because it shows more of what's happening. The plan was to generate concentric circles and then stitch them together into a mesh, so that's what I did. The main issue was figuring out how to arrange it so that the mesh I made was as close to uniform as possible because wonky triangles will always look like wonky triangles.
This is what followed after more work and a couple of hard lessons about floating point precision errors. The two main differences between this mesh and the previous one is that this one is 2d. I didn't need to worry about pushing it into the 3d space because I was only testing the formation of the face mesh. The circular mesh in this image represents a fully procedurally generated mesh with uniform segments that could be scaled to any size just by changing a number or two in the code.
The trouble with procedurally generated meshes is that generating them is only the first part. If you want to edit them in real-time, like in a game, it gets very heavy very fast. Lots of math, lots of testing, endless edge cases. Given the time I had already spent generating these procedural circles, I decided pushing forward was going to be a slog and I didn't think the ends were going to justify the means, so for the terrain I decided to go with a voxel system.
There are some voxel tools for Unreal but I didn't find anything that called to me, so I decided to do it myself. First thing I did was spin up another prototype, this time generating a circle out of squares.
This was the result. Much easier to put together than the circular mesh, but not without limitations. I'm going to have to be careful about how I manage the size of blocks, for example, otherwise there will be certain parts of the world that will seem very jagged because you'll be walking on the edges of the cubes instead of the faces. Nevertheless, those are problems with solutions for another time.
Around this time, things started to go all internal. Lots of work, nothing to show for it. Setting up a custom quadtree, for example, that will be used to indicate to the client what chunks it needs to render in order to present the current area around the player character, and then to update itself as the camera moves to make sure the needed chunks are always available for display. That took a while. Setting up the internal representation of the voxels and chunks took a while.
And learning to spot toolchain errors takes a while. I once lost two weeks trying to track down an infuriating "bug" that wasn't a bug...it was the IDE/plugin/editor that broke and started throwing errors that didn't actually exist. Once you learn how to spot it, it's a nuisance. Before you learn how to spot it, it's soul crushing.
So I made this hand-coded star. I call it, "A Glimmer of Hope" and it's the root component for the world. All of the other chunks that are being displayed are attached to that root component.
Eventually things started to come together. A few complete re-writes took place (usually triggered by the previously mentioned phantom bug) but helped me practice my programming skills and refine the work a little more.
Just in the last week or two, the core of the voxel engine finally came together. This was the first screenshot I thought to take. It's pretty ugly, but it's not about being pretty at this point. There's a little test '+' symbol hiding in there, and then a low-res voxel sphere that is clipping outside the world boundary. That was a deliberate test because I had to be sure that the system would correctly handle the parts that fell out of bounds. If you're familiar with the process of greedy meshing, you should be able to recognize it here. The chunks in this example are only 4 blocks wide (because it's just a test), and the greedy meshing doesn't extend to adjacent chunks, which is why you see the shapes that you do.
And then finally, by simply changing the values that indicate the sphere's position, and the values indicating the size of the voxels and chunks, I got this:
https://imgur.com/tdkzKC7
In the bottom left you can see the test '+' symbol again, and in the top right is another test shape that you couldn't see before because the sphere was covering it. And in the middle, a fairly convincing rendition of a voxel sphere. For reference, that sphere has a diameter of 65 blocks (a Minecraft chunk is 64 blocks wide). I haven't done any specific timed tests, but early tests show that it is fairly quick to build, mesh, and display the sphere. I have a lot of debugging output to remove before I can do time trials.
What's Next?
While taking the last screenshot, I noticed a couple of artifacts that I'll have to fix. Other than that, next steps will be to get materials working properly on the mesh. Then I'll be doing the actual world sculpting, which will be using noise generators and modifying some of the tools I've already made to give the world a more natural looking appearance.
After that is generating nav maps, and then finally the fluid simulation. Somewhere in there I'm sure I'll be able to finally start prototyping some basic gameplay, but I'm trying not to get too far ahead of myself.
If you're not impressed or interested by any of this, that's cool. I wasn't trying to impress anyone. I just thought it might be useful to demonstrate a bit of the process. I'm pretty determined to see this one through, and I'm hoping it will start to look like something before the end of the year.
Cheers!
(I have a Steam page but it's not set up, and won't be until I have a playable demo. I also don't have a Discord and don't care to. I'll start marketing when I have something to market. In the meantime, if there's anything worth sharing for informational purposes, I'll just post it here.)

10 Essential Java Concepts Every Beginner Should Master
https://preview.redd.it/udpgmk8z950d1.png?width=318&format=png&auto=webp&s=4a7355b8d23b327d5543a285f9abcc391f49935b
Introduction:
Being a programming language that is popular throughout the world, Java is known for its stability, portability, and flexibility. Whether you're a complete novice or have some programming experience, mastering the fundamental concepts of Java is essential for building a strong foundation in software development. This article will delve into the 10 concepts every beginner should master to become proficient in Java programming.
Understanding Java Virtual Machine (JVM):
At the heart of Java's platform independence lies the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Beginners should understand that Java code is compiled into bytecode, which the JVM runs. Understanding how the JVM works and its role in making Java applications platform-independent is crucial for writing efficient and portable code. Enrolling in Java Training In Chennai could be best for aspiring developers looking to enhance their programming skills.
Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) Principles:
Given that Java is an object-oriented programming language, every element within it is an object. Beginners should familiarise themselves with OOP principles such as encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism. These concepts form the backbone of Java programming and enable developers to write modular, reusable, and maintainable code.
Variables And Data Types:
Variables in Java are data containers; each variable has a data type specifying the data that can be stored. Beginners should understand the different data types in Java, including primitive data types (such as int, double, and boolean) and reference data types (such as objects and arrays). Mastering variables and data types is essential for manipulating data in Java programs.
Control Flow Statements:
In a Java application, control flow statements let developers manage how the program executes. Beginners should learn about conditional statements (such, if-else and switch-case) and looping statements (such, for, while, and do-while). Understanding how to use control flow statements effectively is crucial for implementing logic and making decisions in Java programs.
Methods And Functions:
Code blocks called methods, sometimes called functions or processes, carry out particular tasks. Java method declaration, calling, and argument passing are concepts that beginners should understand. Learning how to write and invoke methods is vital to promoting code reuse and breaking down large problems into smaller, more manageable chores.
Arrays And Collections:
Arrays and collections are data structures that store multiple values of the same or different types. Beginners should understand the differences between arrays and collections and how to work with them effectively in Java. Mastering arrays and collections is essential for managing and manipulating data in Java programs.
Exception Handling:
Exception handling is the practice of responding to unforeseen circumstances or problems that arise while a Java program is being executed. Beginners should learn about Java's exception-handling mechanism, including try-catch blocks, throw-and-throws keywords, and blocks. Understanding how to handle exceptions gracefully is crucial for writing robust and reliable Java programs.
Classes And Objects:
Classes are blueprints for creating objects, which are instances of a class. Beginners should understand how to define classes, create objects, and access their attributes and methods in Java. Learning about classes and objects is fundamental to object-oriented programming and allows developers to model real-world entities in their Java programs.
Inheritance And Polymorphism:
Through the inheritance method, a class can inherit traits and actions from another class, referred to as the superclass. Thanks to polymorphism, objects of different classes can be considered to belong to the same superclass. Beginners should grasp the concepts of inheritance and polymorphism and understand how to use them to create hierarchical relationships and promote code reuse in Java.
Input And Output (I/O) Operations:
Input and output operations allow Java programs to interact with external sources of data, such as files, streams, and the console. Beginners should learn about Java's I/O classes and how to read from and write to files, handle input from the keyboard, and work with streams for efficient data processing. Mastering I/O operations is essential for building practical and interactive Java applications. What I value most about the Best Software Training Institute In Chennai is its dedication to offering thorough courses customised to each student's learning preferences.
Conclusion:
Being an expert Java developer starts with understanding the language's fundamentals. By understanding concepts such as the JVM, OOP principles, variables and data types, control flow statements, methods and functions, arrays and collections, exception handling, classes and objects, inheritance and polymorphism, and input and output operations, beginners can lay a solid foundation for their journey in Java programming. With practice and dedication, aspiring Java developers can harness the power of Java to build robust, scalable, and maintainable software applications.

First Prev Archive Royal Road Patreon
Donny started off the assessment tests, not just for me, but for the lot of us, which now included Mackenzie, who found out about the thing from Darryl, and it's Mackenzie, she didn't even hesitate for a second on wanting in. I learned this when she was banging on my apartment door at seven in the morning, and when I answered, she launched, "There's a special training class, and you didn't invite me?!"
Princess popped out the door, excitedly prancing for pets, which Mackenzie gave up as I sighed, "I need to move... Mackenzie, I wasn't leaving you out. The teacher asked me to get Darryl, then he blabbed to Aimee and Brad. Come on in."
Trying to convince Mackenzie off of something she wanted was just trying to yell back the tide, but I needed her to understand what was going on as we came into my Serious Conversation Bar. Might as well call it what it is, and fished out Yerba Mate for both of us, "Okay, first thing: When did you get it out of Darryl?"
She popped her can, "Last night. How'd you know it was Darryl?"
I opened my own drink, and took a seat, "Our entire history together. Brad's afraid of you, so he's not talking to you, and I know Aimee wouldn't have said anything, and that leaves my overtalkative best friend, since I didn't bother telling Mom and Dad. Next, you need to know what the goal of the training is. This is to hopefully unlock my Psychic powers, and potentially some others for me. Mr. Donny is the one teaching the class, cause he was a superpower related to it."
"Yeah, like Chi Manipulation. Y'know, that entire array of powers based around martial arts philosophy?" she said, reaching over to grab one of my Larabars, "How could I not get involved? I mean, come on, bro, you gotta let me into this class."
Yeah, okay, now I know where this is going, "So you want Chi abilities. That tracks. It takes massive dedication and years of training to get there, and there's no one precise method to do it. This whole thing could result in nothing."
She rolled her eyes, "Yeah, but they'll let me train, and I get academy credits on my transcript. Could take you forever, too, but it's not stoppin' you."
"I think we both know that I have a cheat for that."
Mackenzie considered a moment, "Yeah, y'know, I'm still not clear on how that 1% of yours equals up to all the shit you've gotten up to."
Fine. I got up, and grabbed a stack of my Magic cards, "Okay, so you remember the dollar example?"
"Yeah, but it's a dollar."
I laid out a card face down, "Okay, running. Imagine the cards as dollar bills. As long as I run, I get 1% better at running, but that's not the whole story, cause running isn't just running. Follow me?"
She nodded, and I continued, moving the card forward on the bar for space, "Alright, now we lay down two more cards: Muscle Growth, and Bone Growth. Each of these are being raised by 1% as well, but that's not the whole story, cause those don't happen in a vacuum. Let's lay down some more cards: For muscle growth, we have two processes, microtearing of the muscle fibre, and healing and regrowth, which is how muscles grow. For bones, we have improvement of the bone's ability to absorb the shock of impact with each step, as well as to heal the damage from impact, but that's not the whole story, either..."
I went through every stage of how muscles are grown, all the body's processes, including chemical reaction, heart and lung reactions, all the way back to the brain and central nervous system. Mackenzie steadily stopped eating and drinking, just watching as more and more cards hit the table. The Breakfast Bar of Serious Conversations was nothing but cards, and some were overlapping due to lack of space, "All of those functions are improving by 1% as I run. That doesn't even cover all the sidework my body does regularly even when I'm not running.
"That's my theory on why I shifted so fast when I first got going. There's a more scientific name for it, but I call it Super-Puberty. The second my power was awakened by Adam, my body started spinning up with every breath, each time I blinked or heard something, and even while I slept, trying to complete the 'blueprint' my DNA prescribed, and every process of my body started improving from that point, but fuel for the changes had to come from somewhere."
She nodded, still looking over the cards, "That's why you were eating so much. It wasn't just one thing, it was everything. So... wait... then that changes the direction of the question. Why aren't you a ton stronger?"
I tilted my head as I picked up the cards and returned them to their box, "Plateauing. I can get stronger, but I would have to keep increasing the exercise itself, and it gets more difficult to find the sort of equipment and training to advance to that next level. It's the law of diminishing returns, as I train, the workout becomes less and less actual effort for my body. Like in karate, at first, ten knuckle push-ups were brutal for us, but I mean, both of us could do twenty or thirty now as a warm-up exercise, because our bodies adapted to the workload. It's the same thing mentally, every single thing I read, absorb as knowledge, even how my brain processes knowledge, retention, it all ticks up. Even sleeping, my brain's in a constant state of activity, doing the mental work for things like dreaming. Interesting note- One of the reasons we sleep is to dream, our body's own self-care system to process conscious and sub-conscious elements. Now, you want actual breakfast? I'm pretty hungry."
We had breakfast together, and Mackenzie did let Mom and Dad know she wanted to take the special training, then when they gave approval, I swung around to drop Princess off for daycare, and grabbed the rest. Mackenzie switched to the back when we got to Aimee's, citing S.O. privilege, and we went off to the H.A.A. to meet up with Donny, who was waiting for us in the lobby, "Mornin', y'all. An' how's our day startin' up?"
Mackenzie blinked, and leaned over, "You're sure he's a teacher?"
"Yes, just very southern."
We had to do visitor badge paperwork for everyone, most of which I filled out, since I already knew it and could just make it happen. Pictures got taken for badges, and we went back to the gym facilities. The branches of the H.A.A. are sort of a one-stop shop for heroes, food lodgings and yes, even exercise and recreation. The gym area was essentially a city block's worth of workout space The most normal bit was the large, olympic size swimming pool, pretty much what you expect out of a world class gym. Weights had your usual assortment, but the increments extended much farther, split between machines and freeweights. Treadmills and other anerobic machines followed similar track, with the usual ideas, then going beyond for supers who needed the extra. It was split between floors, with weights, pool facilities, as well as floor space for more gymanstic-style work, and even climbing walls of various levels of difficulty. There was a ton of space here to work, everyone was marveling at it.
Donny led us through to the elevators, and we went up to the third floor. Removed from the rest of the facility, this had open rooms where we could work on a variety of things. Classes were offered through the H.A.A. for things like yoga, spinning and such for the employees, but the room we stepped into seemed a little more familiar to us: It had been redrafted as an impromptu classroom, complete with desks and a digital white board on four LED screen that had been rigged together. The screen weren't directly linked, but the individual images and whiteboards on them could be moved around as needed. I hung back while I let the others take their seats, then slid in next to Aimee. Brad initially picked a seat, then switch to the other side of Darryl when Mackenzie took the seat next to his.
The desks were arranged in a wide semi-circle, giving us all a solid view of the boards, and Donny as he stepped into the middle. Looking at my desk, the chair was ergonomic, and fairly comfortable, height-adjustable, and the desk itself had a fold-up portion that was really a flip-up tablet connected into the classroom, complete with stylus for easier navigation. Donny gave us a minute to get settle, then passed out some drinks as he got started, "Alright, all o' y'all. I'm Mr. Donny, and I'll be workin' with y'all for this trainin'. Over the next several weeks, we're gonna be advancin' your learning, and I'm hopin' we can help to unlock Marcus's Psychic abilities, then hopefully some other things as well.
"Now, this ain't gonna be your standard sorta schoolin' that you're used to. Our class is five of y'all, so I can tailor things to you as we go along. 'Fore we do that, though, I gotta know where everyone's at, so I went ahead and made us a little 'placement' testin' to do. It ain't about passin' or failin', it's just about lettin' me know where you're at, so I can get a better idea of we need t'be workin' on with you. We'll also be seein' where you're at mentally and physically later, but I'd rather be holdin' those sorts o' tests off til later."
The test covers popped up on our tablets, and I spared a glance around. Darryl just shrugged, it was nothing new to him. We were the two nerds in the room, taking tests wasn't where we hit the skid. Brad mostly looked like he'd been told to eat an extra helping of brussel sprouts after passing the dessert counter, but the two big reactions were Mackenzie and Aimee, a study in opposites. Aimee didn't test well, and was immediately getting stressed out, while Mackenzie was getting that 'fight night' look in her eyes, personifying the sentiment that life is a competition, and she played to win. I leaned over, "Aims, you'll do fine. Remember, this isn't for a grade. It's just so he knows where we're at so he can get started. You've got this."

My wife’s desk + floor desk revised
When I first met her she had a very cluttered desk. Once she agreed to declutter and move to a more minimal approach I designed her desk. She would not compromise with getting rid of the things that are currently on the desk. I made a larger surface with a maple top 24”x60” with a stealth black, modern welded base to give the room a more open look.
I’ve received many requests for specs and experience on my floor desk. When I first began moving towards minimalism I bought the locust standing desk by Focal ($1500 after tax in 2009). The desk was beautiful and over-engineered but was too bulky.
this floor desk was under $200 and suits my minimalist lifestyle perfectly. The first 2 months of using it were hell. Yes, I had to stretch every 10 minutes and move frequently. I had to stretch more so than usual before lifting at the gym to avoid injury. My back was sore every day. Thankfully I’m stubborn. It took 4 months to fully adapt to the floor desk. I can now work full time on it and have long gaming sessions with zero back discomfort.
Desk specs:
(16) Penn Elcom 9145 Rubber Cabinet Foot 1.5" Dia. x 1.5" H Heavy-duty Black (bought from EBay)
(2) thin 16”x4” cinder blocks
(1) regular cinder block for the monitor stand * I use a thin cinder block instead so my wife can move it if needed.
(1) Husky 48 in. Stainless Steel Work Surface for Garage Storage System from Home Depot
(1) glorious XXL extended mouse pad
(1) Single Monitor Stand Freestanding 27-43 Inch Monitor Arm Curved Screen Monitor Mount Tempered Glass Base Adjustable Motion Tilt -15° to 10° Swivel ±45° Rotation 360° Weight Capacity 77lbs HT05B-003 (Amazon)
IQUINIX ZX-1 mini-itx case (this was the smallest case I could find for a power house build)
(1) Sidio crate (to house modem)
(1) Manduka yoga mat.
(1) thing profile yoga block (essential)

2024.05.12 22:37 karenvideoeditor [The Zoo] - Part 1

I’ll start with the job posting, I guess. I spotted it on Indeed while making my daily check for anything and everything that would hire someone with my biology degree, and it seemed on the up and up. Their website looked decent, the guy on the phone sounded nice, and I was looking for anything even slightly related to working with wildlife. Being a nightshift guard at a zoo was fine, especially when I took the incredibly generous rate of $25/hr. into account. That’s eleven bucks more than my dad makes at the local grocer, and he’s been working there for thirteen years. Then again, from the P.S. on the posting, I thought there might be good reason for the rate.
It said at the end, almost as an afterthought, ‘Zoo is haunted.’
When it comes to ghosts, they’ve never made much sense to me. Considering how badly our brains function from just getting jostled around on a football field, I’m not sure how ghosts could exist without a brain at all. I’d be excited as the next person to find proof, but YouTube videos are always fishy and the people on TV are essentially actors who only focus on the entertainment factor for their ratings. So, since I’d never seen anything that vaguely resembled a ghost, I’d say binge-watching Supernatural on Netflix last year was the extent of my experience in that department.
It seemed that the zoo hadn’t been here for long since it wasn’t even on Google Maps yet. There was a bit of a commute, it was half an hour away, but since I’d worked local jobs while I attended college online for the past four years, I’d saved up the money to buy a car. It wasn’t anything fancy, just an old Nissan sedan that I’d bought from someone in the next town over, with faded red paint and a mismatched back right door painted blue. It accomplished the job of transportation, though, which let me search the job market further away, a good thing considering how small a town I lived in. I really didn’t want to leave home yet, so moving for a job in a city or another state wasn’t an appealing option.
The website said very little. It had yet to fill in drop down menus that would excitedly describe their attractions. So far it only had some small sections about conservation and education, though that was intriguing because it mentioned that all the animals they had were endangered. I read that notation and wondered what the animals were. Mammals were always favorites of mine, which I know is a bit of a cliché, loving the furry ones. But when it comes down to it, I’ll take any animal over a person.
The employee entrance to the zoo was a door in the large steel gate that surrounded the property, a few yards down from the sliding gate that presumably opened to let visitors in. I pressed the button on a panel beside it, glancing up at the camera, and I was buzzed in. There was a short path that led to the building near the front and I knocked politely before going inside.
The interviewer, a plain metal nameplate on his desk describing him as Director of Security for the zoo, welcomed me in and sat on the other side of his desk, lounging back in his desk chair. His name was Andrew Higgs, and he had a British accent, which I thought was cool. I sat in one of the two loveseats in front of the desk.
Andrew was dressed business casual, with a blue Polo shirt, a thin black jacket, and I saw he was wearing slacks when he stood up to shake my hand. He was black, with dreadlocks that stopped just short of his shoulders, and a closely trimmed mustache. There was a tattoo, an artistic rendition of a hippo, on the right side of his neck, which bode well in my opinion. So many places hiring these days were overly uptight about their employees’ appearance, but it seemed that wouldn’t be the case here.
We went over the basics before he picked up the piece of paper off his desk, my resume, which he’d printed out. “Well, I spoke to all three of your references,” Andrew noted. “They had some good things to say. You were a great employee on the farm you worked last summer, your boss said. Punctual, hard-working, took instructions well…”
That was nice to hear. I’d spent this past summer working at a dairy farm, mostly assigned to the goats and cows they kept for milk. Aside from the staggering muscle pain that tapered from agony to merely miserable by the end of the summer, it wasn’t a bad job. I did have an old shoulder injury that I always had to work around, but it was my left shoulder and I was a righty, so it wasn’t that difficult to manage.
If anything, the muscle pain in my back and legs from being on my feet all day distracted from the typical issue I dealt with. My standard exercising day-to-day was typically either riding my bike or yoga, although yoga is mind-numbingly boring, so I need to listen to a podcast to pass the time. So, in fact, through the job, I was sort of grateful that my brain was focusing on a different area of my body that was in pain. Yeah, chronic pain is weird.
“He also said you don’t work well with others,” Andrew added, glancing up to me. “You kept submitting complaints about incompetent coworkers?”
I pursed my lips and let out a long breath through my nose, considering the most delicate way I was capable of replying to that before saying, “I dislike stupid people.”
Andrew gave me a half-smile and sighed, replying, “Well, I must confess I’m not fond of them either.” He looked back down to the paper. “This job will be a great fit for you.”
The job interview seemed like a formality, and I don’t know why. I was twenty-three and the ink had barely dried on my degree from the online college I’d attended. I’d been applying to jobs for months and had been thrilled when I’d gotten a call for an interview for this one, but also surprised. Call me a cynic, but I expected more invasive questions about any past work I’d done for a job in security, since I was a woman.
It's not like I was petite. Actually, the most common word I’d heard to describe me is ‘built’, and I fall short of being labeled overweight only because of muscle mass. One comment I recall from high school was being teased for being shaped like a rectangle. Even so, there was no good reason to look a gift horse in the mouth, but of course, me being me, that meant I examined its teeth closely.
“So, you’re hiring me? Just like that? Why?”
Andrew, chuckled. “Look, you’ve got BA in wildlife biology, and specializing in animal behavior is just the cherry on the sundae. That tells me you know animals are not people, and even if you feel like you know them, they can still be unpredictable. They can hurt you. But also, it makes me know you care.”
I suppose that did make sense, and it was true, so I’m glad he knew that. Most of my job on the night shift would be watching cameras and then walking around the place to make sure all the animals were as they should be, but it was more than that. Working at a zoo meant knowing where the line was, and sometimes it wasn’t exactly at the fence, but sometimes just putting a single finger through that fence meant losing that finger. As a whole, humans are generally idiots. Looking at you, anyone who really, honestly thinks that a bobcat would sense your boundless love enough to let you pat it.
“The website didn’t have much about the animals,” I said. “I know this place is new, so you might not have info on them up on the site yet. Do you have a map for me?”
“Oh, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it,” Andrew said with a wave of his hand. At that point, it had seemed to be a reasonable thing for him to say, but I will tell you, the reason was not what I thought. “Just to confirm, you’re not an early bird, Miss Mason? This schedule isn’t a concern?”
I shook my head. “Nah, I’m pretty talented at sleeping in, actually. I never really got past that teenage talent of staying up until five and sleeping in until three. And you can just call me Ripley.”
That made him smile. “Good. Then I won’t worry about you falling asleep on the job, Ripley.”
“Oh, no way.”
“All right. So. You saw the note at the end of the job posting?”
He just stared at me and I was forced to answer, “That the zoo is haunted.”
“Right. What are your thoughts on that?”
There was no easy answer to that question, especially depending on how seriously he took it. “Do you know the best word the Brits gave to us?”
“What’s that?”
“Bollocks.”
Andrew slowly smiled and pointed at me with the end of the pen in his hand. “I think I’m going to like you,” he remarked. “Look…this is the part of the interview where we switch gears. If this was a regular zoo, you’d be a shoo-in for the job. But we’ve got other boxes to check. This outfit is…basically a preservation society. As you saw on the site, all the species are endangered, but what it didn’t say online is that the only people who came to visit are private parties.”
“So, that means…what?” I asked. “You bring in super-rich people who feel special when they get to see the animals you’re rehabilitating and taking care of? Then they donate oodles of money so they can brag to their rich friends about their charity contributions and having seen the animals here?”
Andrew raised his eyebrows. “Pretty much got it in one. It’s just more preservation and less rehabilitation. And a lot of our patrons really do care about the animals, or else they would just donate and not visit. You’ll see tourists a couple times a week, but we decided not to have anyone until we’re settled in here, and that means a person who’s on during the night shift that I can count on. And I don’t know if I can count on you yet.”
“Wait, I’ll see the tourists?” I asked. “They visit at night?”
“Everything we have is nocturnal,” he told me. That struck me as odd, but he continued before I could question it. “Listen up, and I’ll start with the basics. Have you ever seen anything weird? Possibly supernatural?”
“Nope,” I said with a shrug.
The fact is, I got along with my classmates, but I never did have any close friends. So, I thought maybe that’s why I missed out on all those reckless teen moments that started every horror movie. Maybe it left me without a bunch of exciting stories to tell. But hey, at least I didn’t break my leg falling through the floor of an abandoned building in eleventh grade.
Yes, that happened. It was a classmate of mine by the name of Brent. And yes, he’s just as much of a moron as you would imagine.
“If you see the ghost here,” he said, his tone emphatic, “will you freak out?”
I paused. “You’ve seen the ghost?”
“All the time,” Andrew told me. “It’s a young woman in a blue shirt and tan slacks, looks like she just walked out of a lake.”
“Do you have a picture?”
“No, and absolutely no photos or video are to be taken of her,” he said, his tone abruptly turning stern. “It’s cause for immediate dismissal. We have video cameras for security, but they all record off-site in a secure location, and Suzanne Cooper, the owner, manages it herself. Firstly, the ghost deserves privacy rather than exploitation, she’s not to be displayed like one of our animals, but secondly, people believe in ghosts. One leaked photo of her connecting it to us means we get overrun by ghost hunters, and if we trace it back to you, you’re done.”
Andrew seemed next-level serious about that, so I nodded. “Understood. That makes sense.”
The animals were the priority after all, I knew. I preferred them over people anyway, and that included dead people. Even if I could get a video of this ghost doing cartwheels back and forth through a wall, I would never post it and spread word of where I’d taken it. Andrew was right; the zoo would never get the paranormally-obsessed to stay away and would definitely have to relocate.
He continued, “If you’re curious, she’s never so much as tried to hurt anyone. But the zoo has moved before, and she moved with us.”
“She moved with you?” I asked, my eyebrows rising. “Is it like one of those stories where she’s attached to something in the zoo rather than a place?”
“More complicated than that,” he said. Then he grimaced. “She died because she was too ambitious with one of our animals. It never should have happened, but she… She was foolish, you’d say. Attempted to interact with one of the animals, got too close, and honestly, she should have known better. I thought she did.”
“Holy shit,” I whispered. “What killed her?”
He stared at his hands and shook his head. “It was before my time.”
It was clear Andrew was a true believer, but I still really wasn’t sure at that point. How was I supposed to react, though? Zoos have fences and tall barriers for a good reason. Not just to keep the animals away from us, but also the other way around, and ‘death by stupidity’ is not uncommon amongst humans. So, the story wasn’t outrageous, but still, I’d never so much as experienced something unexplainable. But if I saw a ghost, I suppose that’d be that.
“I just need to know, plain and simple, if you’re the kind of person who can handle things that are terrifying,” Andrew told me, splaying his hands. “Our last night shift bloke there was with us for years and years, but we spent months going through other employees. There were six we tried before we found him.”
“Six?” I exclaimed.
He snorted. “Yes, six. Let’s see…” Andrew counted off each one on his fingers. “The first two, the first night they saw the ghost, they lost it. One called me in a panic, babbling, and I had to get out of bed and drive to the zoo to send him home, and the second quit, although at least she made it to the next morning and didn’t drag me out here,” he said, his voice thoughtful. “They just thought I was blowing smoke up their bums with the whole thing.”
He shrugged. “Then, the third one was a bloke who was asleep when I got there in the morning, so I had to fire him. Then another ghost freak-out. The fifth bloke was someone who couldn’t deal with the animals, and then the sixth was so scared of the ghost that when I got here, he was already outside the zoo, pacing, waiting for my car. Apparently he’d said some stuff, rude or mean or whatnot, to try to get her to leave him alone and she had followed him back into the security room, so he fled. I need the opposite of those folks. Alright?”
At this point, I was starting to take it more seriously. Sure, this could just be Andrew’s thing, that he believed in ghosts and then made up these sightings to ensure I believed him. But if I saw her? What would I do?
Well, this would be my job, so I would have to take it seriously. Maybe that was why the pay was so good, to make employees think twice before ditching it. From Andrew’s perspective, if it really was haunted, he was the one who had to deal with applicant after applicant quitting as soon as they laid eyes on the guest who would never leave.
“So…honestly, I can’t say I won’t freak out, considering how next level this is,” I told him, feeling compelled to go with honesty, “but yeah. I think I can handle it, mostly because it’s important for someone to look after this place, look after the animals, so I’d do my best to work around anything that freaks me out. I mean, I have to say that I’ll believe it when I see it. But if ghosts really exist, as long as it isn’t some serial killer who stuck around to keep gutting people, I’ve always thought it’d be cool to find out we can exist after we die.”
The thing is, I think I did believe him. I thought there might really be a ghost there, because otherwise, why take it so seriously? It could’ve been that Andrew had only glimpsed her out of the corner of his eye a few times and could ascribe it to lack of sleep, but he was literally worried about word getting out. I thought that being halfway to believing him would give me the mental preparation I needed if I saw her. At least, I’d hoped so.
It turned out that most of my time would be spent at the security desk in the main building, near the entrance. Real-time footage played through thirty-five cameras around the zoo, all on a large screen that was five cameras across and seven cameras top to bottom. The cameras were impressive. I would mention the resolution, say something about them being 4K, but Andrew explained some stuff about how it’s actually the lens that is the biggest selling point. Looking at these cameras on the giant screen, I could see practically every corner of the place, and if I brought up one camera in particular to encompass 2/3 of the screen, I could zoom in so far that it felt like I could use it to check if one of the animals had fleas.
The zoo was well lit, not surprising considering nighttime was apparently the zoo’s business hours, and all of the tall lamps had red bulbs. For those of you who know why, A+ to you. For those who don’t, fun fact, it’s because red is closest to the dark and your eyes don’t need to strain to adjust to it. That meant I didn’t need my flashlight all that often, and even that was red, a solid name-brand one that had been on my desk when I arrived. I kept the white lights on back in the security room, though, because I didn’t want to make my brain think it was time to get tired.
When I headed out for my first sweep on that first night, I had the folded map in my pocket, but I already knew my way around. The layout of the zoo wasn’t that difficult to memorize, since there were only eleven expansive enclosures, and after the interview I walked around for half an hour to start training my memory. I’ll admit, working in a dark environment was creepier than I thought it would be.
I do want to mention the high quality of the zoo. The size of each enclosure was considerable, and the greenery was natural, hinting that they’d hired a pricey professional just to do landscaping toward the front of the enclosures after buying the land. The backs of the enclosures backed up into forestry, and from the estimate I got from Andrew, it seemed each of the animals had plenty of roaming space, including the small lake at the northwest corner and a manmade lake for one of the animals in particular. When I considered all of that, the thought passed through my head about how horrible it would be if word got out about the zoo having a ghost and needing to relocate, because it’d be devastatingly expensive.
My orders were to walk the zoo once every hour. This was my first security gig, so I’m not sure if that’s more or less than typical, but I had my comfy hiking boots on, the ones I’d saved up for and invested in a couple years earlier and were perfect for a job where I had to do laps around an area. This job was one that I didn’t have to worry about my shoulder pain worsening, since it was mostly about being on my feet. I take one or two Vicodin a day, depending on how bad my pain is. It came in handy in high school, actually. With a flexible ‘take as needed’ prescription, I occasionally sold pills for extra cash.
There wasn’t much to step in and there weren’t even any dips in the concrete sidewalks that I followed around in a route that easily led me back and forth until I made my way back to the office. The first three nights were actually boring. I would have thought Andrew had been pranking me about the ghost, but like I said, it hadn’t felt like that. And he hadn’t been specific about when she showed up for new people, or even for him.
To keep myself busy, I’d brought my e-reader with me, and I got into a cycle of looking over each of the cameras every time I hit the end of a chapter. I’m a pretty fast reader, so it was a good system. Also, every once in a while, I looked up if something moving caught my eye, like an owl flying close enough for the camera to catch it, but that’s about it.
Then, every hour on the hour, I did a walk through. The fourth night, I was passing by the small lake at the back left corner of the property when I saw her.
People say that you can tell if someone’s staring at you, that there’s some sixth sense humans have. It’s not true; they’ve done experiments. But the thing is, all those experiments were of someone human looking at them. After this last shift, I would guess that the sixth sense that sends goosebumps down your arms, the one that makes you feel an intangible pressure, that slides your body toward fight or flight mode, might be true of…other things.
Slowly coming to a stop at the disturbing feeling, I hesitantly looked around, through the trees. Then my heart skipped a beat and my breath hitched. It was startling because she wasn’t moving. Just standing among the trees, staring at me. I broke out in a cold sweat as I stared back at her, unsure what to do. I didn’t run. I didn’t try to talk to her. I just stood there. So, there’s my answer to Andrew: I didn’t freak out. I just froze.
The woman was Latina, her skin tone pallid from death, and was dressed as he’d described her, in slacks and a silky blue blouse. And she was soaked, as if she’d just walked out of the lake. Beyond that, her shirt was drenched in blood from what looked like claw marks across her abdomen. Her eyes were dark and penetrating, boring holes into me, as if she were able to get any and all knowledge that she wanted about me simply by glaring. The fabric of her shirtsleeves clung to her skin and was dripping, as was her long black hair. Speaking of her hair, it appeared to have seaweed woven into it, or maybe she also grew seaweed along with hair. Not my area of expertise.
The look on her face was indescribable. There was something deep in her eyes, behind her closed-off expression, that made my heart beat rapidly. Maybe I would’ve projected some emotion into her face if I’d had any idea of what she was capable of, whether she could move objects, or possess me, or if all she did was hang around. As things stood, I was left just projecting my fears, which gave me the impression that she was cross with me simply for being present. It felt like I was trespassing, even though I was a dozen feet back from the fence that encircled the enclosure. And also, this was my job so I was explicitly allowed to be here.
She was disturbingly close, and remained unnaturally still. If she had attacked me, I wasn’t sure what I would’ve done. Ran, probably, but considering ghosts probably don’t follow the laws of physics, maybe she could’ve chased me at Usain Bolt speed. For all I knew, she could teleport.
After an amount of time that felt awkwardly long, I finally spoke up.
“Hi,” I croaked.
The woman slowly tilted her head but didn’t otherwise move. I’d forgotten to ask Andrew for her name, I realized, but he had mentioned her death had been before his time, so maybe he didn’t know.
Swallowing hard, I tried to take a slow, deep breath, even though it felt like there was a cinder block on my chest. “So, I, uh…I work here now,” I said slowly. “I’m night shift security.” Pausing, I kept trying to gather information from her demeanor but failed. “Is that okay?”
At that, I saw a hint of curiosity flash across her face. “Why would it not be?” Her voice sounded completely normal, which was an off-putting contrast to her appearance.
Good question. Hell if I know the answer. “I don’t know. I mean…you were here first. I don’t know if you feel like I’m…intruding…or something.”
“You’re just doing your job,” she said, her tone softening a smidge.
I waited to see if she wanted to say anything else before saying, “Right.” Can I get you anything? A towel? Some bandages? “I’ll be going now.”
The woman made no movement to come after me as I gradually took one step, then another, keeping her in my sights as I walked off. I finally had to turn to face forward, unable or unwilling to be seen by her foolishly walking away backwards. Instead of continuing my sweep, I took the path that would lead me back to the security room. I kept looking behind me and felt her eyes on me all the way back, though I didn’t see her following me. At that point, even if she hadn’t moved an inch, my brain was on red alert when it came to self-preservation and figured I would continue to feel like a wet hand might grab me from behind at any moment.
Finally, I returned to the security room, swiping my card across the panel at the back door with a beep. Opening the door, darting inside, and slamming it behind me, I walked to the far side of the room and turned around, putting my back to the wall. Until I’d gotten back, I hadn’t noticed how fast I’d been walking, how quickly I’d been gasping for air. Leaning back against the wall, my legs turned to jelly and I slowly slid to the floor.
And that was it. My first sighting of the ghost. I’d thought that if I had seen her, there would be some part of me that was skeptical, that would reason my way out of it, convinced it was a prank. But I knew. She wasn’t a person. At least, not anymore.

2024.05.12 19:09 whatsmyfach Question About Foundation w/ Cinder Blocks

Hello,
As the title suggests, I'm curious about making a cinder block foundation, but probably not in the way you'd expect.
Instead of using them as bases to put a lumber foundation on, is it a bad idea to even/level the ground, and then lay a full bed of cinderblocks down next to each other, flat side up, and then put the shed on top? The house I recently moved into has a ton of leftover cinderblocks that I have no other use for. The shed is only 6x4, purchased from a store, and made of metal.
It can get pretty rainy where I am , so not sure if that might be cause for a concern for something like this.
Thanks in advance for you help toward a newby!

2024.05.12 18:43 OpalWildwood The Exception

This article (link below) is interesting in general — I only recently heard this thing where polyamorous people are usually considered “ugly.” What I found more interesting is another concept mentioned at the end where the BMAL (Big Man at Large) author talks about being “the exception to the rule.”
In my experience, the guys who approach me (esp. through various online means) ALL want to be the exception to my rules (no smokers, specific age bracket, within 18 miles of me.) First, they write me saying they’re the things I explicitly said I didn’t want. Most of the time when that happens I ignore/delete/block.
Being a curious person, I wonder why they would fucking waste my time and patience that way so I sometimes ask. Answers irritate but do not disappoint!
Q: Why would you respond from (town 80 miles away)? A: It’s not that far.
Q: What are your plans for when you retire? (To 36 year old who ignored my age range.) A: Retire from what?
Q: You read that I’m looking for a man late 40s or older? A: That’s ok, I love older women.
Q: Smoking is my #1 dealbreaker. A: I never smoke inside.

2024.05.12 17:31 Quiggler_ Extend driveway behind a garage that is close to property line - where to start?

Extend driveway behind a garage that is close to property line - where to start?
We just moved into a house where the previous owners added on a detached 2 car garage (blueprints from the build above). It’s a great structure - the problem is there is now no easy way to get a vehicle to the backyard. We have an in ground pool that may need maintenance one day, 2 older large propane tanks that also made need to be chanced out in the future, and we have some gardening aspirations that’ll require heavy equipment etc. to get to the backyard. It would also be nice to have an additional spot to park a car. The other side of the yard is blocked by the pool all the way up to the other property line. There’s about a 10 foot clearance from the edge of the garage to the property line. I’d love to add on a small driveway that curves around the garage to a small paved area behind the garage (red line on blueprint photo). Where do I start in terms of planning, permitting, etc. Is this too close to the property lone and if so can we apply for some sort of exception. There’s heavy tree cover on that side that we wouldn’t have to mess with. I can’t imagine the neighbor would mind. I’m in the Lehigh Valley area of PA.

2024.05.12 16:44 Subl7mo7 Buggy copy

Hey, was wondering is anyone could inform me better. People online have said that you can rebuild the buggy for every island if you wanted to so I copied the buggy blueprint on Soggy Skerry and rebuilt it but its just a combination of pipes, blocks, bolts and seats now. (Got the blueprint complete notification but its not turning into the actual buggy) Is there something I'm missing? Thanks in advance!
