Throwaway so my family doesn't see.
I'm from a really well off household and I honestly have everything I could ever want. I go to a great college, my parents are supportive of me, my lifestyle, and my career path, but as I've gotten older, I've realized that I really don't like what my parents do for a living.
My father is an oil advisor and my mom is basically the equivalent of a suburban slumlord. I've heard her laughing before when someone can't pay their rend and she seems very entertained by the fact that she can, according to the contract she has her tenants sign, go into their homes and repossess their possessions as collateral. She's a terrible landlord! I've even had to talk her out of trying to charge tenants for "extra correspondence" (them emailing her more than she would like.)
It feels drastic to cut them off, they're paying for my college and apart from this, my relationship with them is pretty great. But I can't shake the terrible feeling that comes from knowing almost everything I own comes from A. Oil or B. some struggling family's rent money. I've argued with them when they try to pull heinous shit, but their logic is "if we don't do it, someone else will", and they're honestly too pleased with the money they make to be willing to question if its wrong. I don't believe that housing should be a commodity and I know that's the system in place, but she could at least not be terrible to the people that rent from her. And the oil thing is a whole different story, but I guess it disturbs me less because it's less hands-on horrible and I don't see what he does with my own eyes.
I know how first world problem-y this sounds and I know that there's a lot of people who would be happy to take my place, but I don't know what's right to do. They're great to me and my siblings and I'm grateful for my position in the world. If I cut my parents off, they wouldn't stop what they do and all that would come out of it is student loan debt and no parents for me (is this the same logic as if I don't do it someone else will?). I'm even trying to become a public defense lawyer to give back a little to society for what my parents do. Should I shirk off my morals, shut my trap, and embrace being a child of unethical wealth? Should I be a "conscientious objector" to what my parents do, try to make things better, but still feel like a hypocrite for still being dependent on them? Do I try to become completely self sufficient and independent if I don't like what they do so badly? What's the moral thing to do?
TLDR: My mom is a slumlord and my dad is an oil advisor and I don't like what they do. I feel guilty for being in my position of wealth and being dependent on them still. I don't know what the right thing to do is.

Hi all! This is my first time posting here.
My parents have an apartment in NCR region where a family was living for the past two years as tenants. Their rent agreement was till Jan’24 and they haven’t vacated the apartment yet. The biggest problem(according to my parents) is that the family doesn’t even live there. They just have their belongings in the apartment. The family took some money from money lenders and haven’t returned it and we feel that they are on the run. They would not even pick our calls or reply to any emails/messages.
I live in the US and have not been able to help my parents as much as I can. My parents have gone to the police but they say that we have to wait a few months before they can do anything.
Can anyone give any advice on how to get our apartment back? My parents want to sell that place ASAP.

My (F29) 2 friends (both F30) from university have created a group chat and are urging me to go to Japan with them, since tickets are cheap right now. I told them that I will be going twice this year already, so I will have to pass on going with them and they can just go together. I don’t want to go with them at all, because I went with them to a different prefecture in Japan 6 years ago and we had so many differences. They are always looking for the cheapest things and places regardless of where it is and what it is. I also had to plan everything and make the itinerary and buy tickets for everything. I was also the designated train expert. I’m okay with staying in cheap hotels as long as it’s in a good location and the bathroom is clean. I’m also okay with taking trains and walking instead of taking taxis, since the price difference is insane and I love walking anyways. What I’m not okay with is eating at 7/11s, family marts, or random restaurants that have 1 star reviews but are cheap. I know I sound crazy, but I love food. I love to eat. I especially love to eat when I’m on vacation. I’m not rich by any means, but I would rather save up and eat whatever I want and go to whatever attraction I want on vacation rather than go there and just stare at food and places I cannot afford. Eating while on vacation is one of the best experiences. Especially in Japan! When I went with them 6 years ago, I wanted to try this yakiniku restaurant, but they did not, since they found it to be expensive. It was about 30USD per person. I acquiesced since they both didn’t want to eat there. They chose this random restaurant with a more affordable menu. The food was about 10USD per dish. I just ate ice cream, because the food did not look appetizing at all and even they were having a hard time finishing it. The bill came and we were all shocked. There was a random door charge that was about $10 each person. I was pissed. They wanted to complain to the waitress, but how in the world were we going to complain when it was probably normal in that area. I just stayed quiet the rest of the night and told myself to just let it go. The next day came and we were in line at this famous tonkatsu restaurant. It was about $20 per meal and when we sat down they only ordered one croquette ($5) per person because they didn’t have want to order a $20 meal. The croquette wasn’t even that big so they were still hungry. My meal was a set and was refillable, so they just ate my rice and soup. It was honestly really embarrassing, because the waitress was staring at us and I just wanted to melt. I’m not dragging them to $100 per meal restaurants here. I completely understand that people have different budgets for different things, but I feel like this is too extreme. We also went to a theme park and instead of riding different rides, they got tired after 3, and wanted to just sit down the rest of the day. I had to go around by myself, because they were too tired. We meet about once a year, because our schedules are too different. Even when we meet I cannot help but think we are just growing apart. We have so many different views on things. We recently went out to dinner and we were just having a good time when one of them mentioned a very delicate topic about another young woman. This woman had an intimate video of her released when she was a minor and they were making fun of her. I saw red. I didn’t shout at them or anything, but I reprimanded them for being vile and I told them if they were going to continue with this conversation, I was leaving. They always stick up for each other, so it always feels like I’m in the wrong, but this time I didn’t back down. They told me I was ruining the dinner, so I said it wouldn’t be ruined in the first place if they just acted like well raised adults. We all went home soon after that. They’ve been acting like nothing happened and have been messaging me and still asking me to go to dinners with them, but I just don’t want to anymore. I can’t help feeling sad, because we’ve been friends for over a decade. They’re going to ask me to go with them again somewhere sometime in the future, and I don’t know how to tell them I don’t want to go with them without hurting their feelings. I’m not even sure if I still want to be friends. I know we’re all old enough to talk about this maturely, but these two are not very mature. When I mentioned that I was already going this year, they both said that it’s because I didn’t want to see them and I was choosing my other friends over them. I don’t know how to handle these two, because all my other friends act their age. My 14 year old sister is easier to reason with. What do I do?

Hi, I'm in the process of taking over an apartment lease but the whole process is making me a little nervous. I found a great apartment through CL. The current resident is looking to leave and wants someone to assume the last 4 months of her contract. Here would be the process:

• add me as a roommate to her contract by signing a new contract. (I have already been approved, haven't signed anything)
  
• I pay her 1/2 the security deposit
  
• she would move out prior to me moving in
  

-we would transfer utilities and Internet to my name
-after a little bit, we would sign a roommate release form together making me the sole tenant
A few things make me nervous. One, the management at her company has been ridiculously hard to work with (losing my application, documents, the keys to the apartment, etc). The other is that she has been really pushy with me, asking me to pay her the full security deposit (before I negotiated it to half) as evidence that I was "ready and certain" to take over the lease before I'd even signed a contract. She also suggested that if the apartment wouldn't allow us to mov forward with the contract, I could help her pay her lease break fee (!) and we could find a place to rent together (!) Also, every communication she has had with her management has involved a lie or phrased in a way to obscure the truth...shes told them we want to switch utilities to me to "build my credit", that we're moving in together to "save for a house," and that having me as a roommate would help "reduce her move out costs." She has also assured me that she likes to be truthful and upfront with people, having worked in rental management herself. Obviously, she is not being truthful and upfront with her property management and it makes me nervous I'm going to be screwed over if I move forward with this. Am I being rational?

A remnant of humanity lives on beneath the protection of an immense dome. Bereft of history and ignorant of anything beyond the dome's confines, they inhabit an encapsulated and automated City. A vast metropolis built atop the mechanisms which ensure their survival.
All is not bliss however. Residents increasingly hear of illegal actions by those whose curiosity draws them to off-limits areas beneath the City. Police lieutenant Lewis Clay has more than lawbreakers to deal with though. His relationship with a longtime girlfriend is on the rocks, and soon falls apart.
Catherine Westall spends most days working at an orphanage, but her ordinary exterior hides a well kept secret. She’s a delver; one of those who flaunt the City’s laws in their expeditions to restricted sublevels.
When Lewis attempts to arrest Catherine for delving crimes, she narrowly escapes, hoping never to encounter him—or get caught—again. Chance spoils that. Meeting once more in social circumstances, both decide perhaps it’s possible to look past those aspects they find distasteful in the other.
Beginning a more involved, and personal, relationship, they grow closer just as conditions in the City grow bleaker. Earthquakes of unknown cause frighten the citizens, just as everything from plumbing to appliances start to lose reliability. Slowly trusting one another more, Lewis agrees to join Catherine on an expedition below the City. A journey to hunt the disturbances’ cause, and one which will place both in more danger than they’ve ever encountered before.

For Catherine Westall and Lewis Clay, the dome-covered City is the only home either has ever known. They're both curious though, about why the lights on the dome's underside move from east to west over the course of each day.
That curiosity is one of the few things they have in common; considering Lewis works as a police officer, and Catherine involves herself in the practice of delving. An illegal activity which takes its practitioners to forbidden areas beneath the City. She risks her safety, in part, to secure money for the orphanage she manages. Lewis—bound by his duty—tries unsuccessfully to arrest Catherine after becoming stuck with her for a time in the off-limits underbelly. Escaping, she hopes never to see him again, but he, having learned of their shared curiosity, tries to hunt down leads regarding her identity.
Meeting again at a fundraiser for the orphanage, they come to realize that even with their conflicting legal views, they enjoy each other’s company. Planning to meet up again, both wonder if a friendship — or even something more — could be possible.
While his goal increasingly becomes to learn more about her — even to the point of beginning delving himself — he struggles to keep their relationship from damaging his career and other friendships. She finds herself growing fonder of him, while still uncertain what secrets may be safe to share with the charismatic police officer.
Both seek to deepen their relationship, but as more and more citizens blame delvers for an increase in mysterious failures around the City, they find themselves drawn into the dangerous business of trying to diagnose the problems. As inexplicable earthquakes begin to rock the City, both wonder what they’ll be able to accomplish, and whether their lives, or their home, can ever return to normal.

Lewis Clay joined the City police force in hopes of helping his fellow citizens; knowing the job would bring him into contact with criminals. Even encountering delvers—those who make illegal expeditions to the City’s underbelly—wasn’t out of the question. He never expected to actually meet one though.
Catherine Westall, frequent delver, never expected to meet a policeman during one of her expeditions, but there Lewis is, clearly not buying her story about getting lost.
He doesn’t get her name before she escapes his botched arrest attempt, but the two do learn more about one another, including the uncommon curiosity they share. Most residents have never wondered why the City was built, or what — if anything — exists outside the dome above their heads.
Catherine works at an orphanage; interested more in nurturing the children than her bank account. Indeed, the institution is chronically short of money, and her affection for the kids leads to risky profit-seeking delves.
They meet again by chance; neither really looking for a relationship, but finding unlikely companionship in the other. Trust doesn’t come easy, between a law enforcer and a law breaker, but Lewis gains his own interest in delving, just as she struggles to balance career, hobby, and romance.
It isn’t a simple love story however. Necessities more fundamental than law or love are always in demand, and systems providing food, water, and air all begin to falter one after another.
Lewis and Catherine wish they could just enjoy their burgeoning affections, but as quakes begin to rock the City, they realize the most dangerous parts of their lives — so far — are fast approaching.

For some context: - i am 20f and live with my mother - my gf (19f) and i have been together for 3 years - 2022 dec - 2023 jan i had lots of family visiting which made it hard to see my gf as regularly as i wanted to (once a week, maybe less) - 2023 march my mother and i went on a last minute trip to america as we thought my grandfather was going to pass. it was initially 2 weeks, but we extended 2 more weeks while we were there as he needed extra support - the 22/23 issue and this extension caused a great deal of stress and frustration on my gf - i went to japan for a week with my mum in november 2023 for her birthday. this also caused some frustration and anxiety for my gf, but much less than previous trips

I am going to america again this december for 3 weeks for christmas. This time around there is no problem, my mum and i are going to spend christmas with family and have a vacation. due to prior events, i have found it difficult to talk to my gf about this upcoming trip as i know it will cause lots of frustration and make her upset.
She gets anxious and upset, as we are apart for a long time. And she also feels anxiety that i may extend my trip again similar to the 2023 extension.
I dont know what to do anymore. I dont want the relationship to end, but i find it so difficult and frustrating to deal with. I sometimes dont really understand her frustration and sometimes it is quite unjustified. For example, while I was in Japan and we would call, we would have arguments and she would not really be happy speaking to me.
I understand that its hard when your s/o is far away and for a long period of time, but i am finding it harder and harder to help this. The obvious answer is to not go on trips, but i WANT to go. I want to see my family and I want to not spend another lonely christmas with just me and my mother, when i could spend it with my grandparents who dont have much time left.

When I was 18 something happened to me that left me lost,hurt and unhappy,I had to move to another country to start over.its been 4 years ever since and my world revolves around work back to my apartment. I try to be unnoticed at work and it's really been working for 4 years now.
I will read novels,watch movies and if I go out maybe just to do my hair or groceries,all these time I have been telling myself am happy with how my life is,I mean no dramas that comes with friends or relationships.But something happened yesterday that just makes me feel soo alone and sad.Am sick I called my work and it was a surprise because i never miss work so when I asked sometime off I was given permission without struggling.
Am all alone with no one to even talk to and tell them how am feeling, am weak I can't cook and am not used to order food so I have nobody to even cook for me or help me buy medicines I had to wake up and go buy them myself.For the first time in these 4 years I miss that bubbly girl I was before my world came crushing down on me,for the first time I wish I had a friend even just online to talk to.And lastly for the first time I just realised I have been lying to myself that am happy when am not.

I (23f) have been with my boyfriend (23m) for a year now. We've had our ups and downs, but for the most part it's been a very loving and fun relationship.
One of the only issues I have with him is he forgets a lot of things, often. He has adhd, which I understand, because I do too. But I get worried about upsetting people so I typically make notes or alarms to make sure I forget as seldom as possible.
Our anniversary was yesterday, and for months I've been telling him to not worry about the anniversary itself, that I'll take care of the planning, expenses, and whatever else, and that all I wanted from him and what would mean more to me than anything was a handwritten letter to me. I even wrote one for him to return the sentiment so we could keep them and look at them as a reminder of our first year together.
The anniversary itself was wonderful. I scheduled and planned a lot of activities we both enjoyed, I had to dip into savings bc he didn't have as much, but I didn't mind. We got a bottle of wine, some leftovers from a nice restaurant, and headed back to the hotel. I asked him if he remembered the letter.
He forgot to write it. Actually, worse than that, he said he didn't feel like "writing a 500 word essay" and felt stupid doing it. So he just didn't.
I'm trying so hard to just enjoy the last little bit of our vacation and do the last couple things we planned but I feel really bummed. It's like I'm not worth it to him. He insists I'm his everything and he cries sometimes just thinking about his feelings for me, he says, but why does this kind of thing keep happening? I feel so unvalued. I'm not sure what steps to take moving forward.

I (33,f) was with my ex bf (33,m) for a year and half. We met on Okcupid, and were very alike in many ways and hit it off right away, 4 months later, we decided to go steady. He came off as someone who was very family oriented, someone who cared about building a legacy, and was marriage minded, and that I was his first girlfriend.
Being together with him felt like a dream, he accepted me as a whole, encouraged me to improve, didn't leave when i went through surgery early on in our relationship, he took me to all his company's annual dinners, brought me to see his parents a month into getting official and I brought him to see mine a little later, he took us out on our first trip when we got intimate for the first time. Things were mostly peaceful and we hardly fought, i took care of him in every way I could, cooked, cleaned, took care of him when he was sick. I have never cared a single bit that he was earning lesser than I was, and I shared the dating expenses. I was nothing but grateful and happy to have found someone like him after all the prior unlucky encounters.
At one point in our relationship, he was having issues at work where his probation was being extended, I comforted him and worked together to pass the extension, i passed his cv to all the headhunters in my contacts and hoping it would help him securing a job opportunity elsewhere, he eventually passed and we celebrated it by taking a trip together.
After the trip, I found out that he's always had dating apps installed on his phone, i was devastated when I first found out and confronted him over it. He cried and begged that it was because he thought i would leave him as he was on the verge of losing his job at the time, he promised that he didn't swipe nor cheat on me, I broke down and promised him that I would always be by his side. He uninstalled the dating app after i found out and promised that we'll work towards our future, so we began our house hunting, and he eventually bought his first apartment for us.
A few months later, i realized my period stopped because of the pills we discussed over it and agreed to stop the pills, and he'd be using condom moving forward. However, he was really undisciplined when it comes to contraception and i eventually got pregnant, i didn't want to abort the child at first and told him we should just get married, he said that he wasn't ready and talked me into having an abortion. I was sad, but I didn't want my child to live a life where the father didn't want him. He promised that we would have our children in the future when the time was right. And so we went with his decision, I was crying the whole night before the visit and cried in front of the doctor. It was beyond devastating for me.
Fast forward to 26th of December, I had a hunch that he was hiding something from me, so I went through his phone, turned out he had been cheating on me since day 1 with girls from dating apps, he had been taking them out on dates, attempting to sleep with them. He used all my favourite pictures that i took of him on dating apps, claimed that he was looking for long-term relationships. It killed me to know that he texted them on my birthday, flirted with them on Valentine's day, cheated on me even when I was helping him with job hunting while he lived a double life that I knew nothing of. I confronted him right away, and he claimed it was because his parents didn't like me, he begged me not to go, he claimed that he hadn't done anything physical with them and swore he will not cheat on me ever again, and we went for our first couple counselling on the same night. Life after that was hell, i couldn't trust him, i was fighting with my own self-respect, i fell into a deep depression. We tried our best at rebuilding the trust, and i acknowledged that he tried his best to reassure me and calmed me down whenever i was having a panic attack.
We decided to take a 3 week break after a month of trying to reconcile, the 3 weeks of no contact were brutal, i didn't know if he was cheating on me but I was so afraid of losing him at the same time. 3 weeks later, he came over to my house with gifts and broke up with me. I begged for him not to go, and that we can mend things. He wished me all the best and promised that i'll find my forever person one day and he then just left.
It's been 3 and a half months since the break up, and it still haunts me, i tried my best in that relationship, i gave in my all, i was a good girlfriend, i listened to him and was supportive. But this is what i'm being rewarded with, a very painful experience.

So like everyone here I watched the yesterday's presentation, new lightweight "GPT-4 level" model that's free (rate limited but still), wow great, both the voice clarity and lack of delay is amazing, great work, can't wait for GPT-5! But then I saw (as always) excellent breakdown by AI explained, started reading comments and posts here and on Twitter, their website announcement and now I am left wondering why they rushed through presentation so quickly.
Yes, the voice and how it interacts is definitely the "money shot" of the model, but boy does it do so much more! OpenAI states that this is their first true multi-modal model that does everything through single same neural network, idk if that's actually true or bit of a PR embellishment (hopefully we get an in depth technical report), but GPT-4o is more capable across all domains than anything else on the market. During the presentation they barely bothered to mention it and even on their website they don't go much in depth for some bizarre reason.
Just the handful of things I noticed:

• It's dramatically better at generating text on an image than dalle-3. As everyone who has tried it, dalle-3 is better than anything before it, but the model falls apart after at most 5 words. This is a massive improvement, but not only that but it also is able to iterate on the image. There are still mistakes (eisé instead of else, keyboard letters are not correct) but boy it's such a big jump. And I am willing to it's not just text but images also will have dramatically less errors in them
• You are able to generate standalone objects and then give it to interact with, what's strange to me is that they hid the fact it's a new conversation under a hover icon! You know what that means, you can give it any image and ask it to manipulate with! And the model does a fantastic job of matching the style of the thing given.
• It's able to generate images to create 3D reconstruction
• It's able to generate images with modifications, if you look closely it's you'll notice it's not the same coaster, it's not doing inpainting or anything, it's generating it from scratch but the fact it's able to make it look like the original shows so much potential.
• It's able to summarize 45 minute video with lots of details (I am very curious if this if this will be possible on chatGPT website or only through API and if so how much would 45 minutes cost and how quickly would it able to do it)
• The model is as good or better than SOTA models

And of course other things that are on the website. As I already mentioned it's so strange to me they didn't spend even a minute (even on the website) on image generating capabilities besides interacting with text and manipulating things, give us at least one ordinary image! Also I am pretty positive the model can sing too, but will it be able to generate one or do you have to gaslight ChatGPT into thinking it's an opera singer? So many little things they showed that hint at massive capabilities but they just didn't spend time talking about it.
The voice model, and interaction with you was clearly inspired by movie Her (as also hinter by Altman) , but I feel they were so in love with the movie they used the movie's version of presentation of technology that they kinda ended up downplaying some of the aspects of the model. If you are unfamiliar, while the movie is sci-fi, tech is very much in the background, both visually and metaphorically. They did the same here with sitting down and letting the model wow us instead showing all the raw numbers and all the technical details like we are used to from traditional presentations that Google or Apple do. Google would have definitely milked at least 2 hour presentation out of this. God, I can't wait for GPT-5.

Dive into this tale of mine which would take you back to the days of my adolescence. I belonged to a world which didn't lack the least in ways to enjoyment. A place abundant in fun, activities, joy and peace. One day, something happened. Something that would change me, my way of life and my perspective all together. On my way back home, I saw a valley of flowers. A backdrop of beauty which can't be described in words. I got fascinated and decided to enter it. It led to a narrow lane which seemed like gateway to heaven. After walking for a while, I realised that I had ventured into the Palace of witches. It took me a while to believe what I was seeing. It looked as if I had entered a dream land which had everything but reality. Being lost, I decided to wander around hopelessly, trying to find a way out. Suddenly, I stumbled upon a girl. She looked like an angel disguised as a human. But to the contrary of her heavenly aura, she seemed to be surrounded by loneliness.She claimed to be all alone in this world. I couldn't bear to see such a pure timid soul all alone. I made up my mind to take her to my world. She guided me on our way out and we were able to leave that mysterious world. A few days passed by and she had finally started to blend in. She felt at ease with me and started enjoying my company the way I did. Months passed like minutes and we never realised that it had already been 2 years since that fateful incident of our meeting. It was 1:00am at night, she was in my arms. She felt like my comfort cocoon as if my entire world could confine in her. She whispered in my ears about something that had been troubling her since the day we left.
