2024.05.13 23:08 ZenotheFlow Trying to claw my way out of 3PL. Best career path to learn different modes - ocean import/ocean export, air imports and air exports?

Currently in a meat grinder as an AM at a major 3PL. I have the aptitude to do and learn more, but feel stuck managing the FTL book of business I do with minimal pay (55k). I had a shot at transitioning to the customer side of things as a Regional Coordinator working with FTL, Drayage and Intermodal but lost it in the final round to someone with more experience.
I've hit the ceiling of learning and development in my current role. Don't want to switch to another 3PL for more of the same, and freight forwarding seems even more of a sales grind than 3PL, not the direction I want to go. My skills lie in operations and claims/data analytics/contract negotiation/account management. I've taught myself intermediate level Excel and PowerBI. Learning SQL currently. Don't get much of a chance to practice it in my current role aside from the one-off projects here and there.
Could anyone please recommend some paths to transition out of the 3PL life? It's soul-sucking. Feeling deflated I lost my 'out' to go to greener pastures on the customer side. Am open to any paths. Was searching for operations positions in Freight Forwarding or Import/Export Coordinator roles. However it seems like the FF & NVOCC roles are sales 'hunter' roles; are there operations roles in this field? And if so what are they called so I can look for them?
Import/Export Coordinator roles seem like the customer equivalent but a lot of what I'm seeing is "needs FF experience", and all the FF roles are sales based. Where can I go from here? Any help would be appreciated.
EDIT: Looking for salaries in the range of 65-75k in major cities such as Houston TX, Atlanta GA, Richmond VA. Let me know if that's not realistic without some working experience in those niches. I'll take anything at this point.

2024.05.13 21:09 mrkevin678 Using cut off saw/ quick cut as stump grinder

Am I able to find a blade that cuts wood on a Stihl quick cut and just use it as a stump grinder? Or would the wood carving attachment for a stump grinder work on a quick cut ? Asking cause I don't own either machine but considering buying cut off saw because it is cheaper. Want to know so I don't injure myself

2024.05.13 12:46 Ckyaj Flea Market find need help completing!!

Alright so last year I posted in here about getting a cheap Krupps espresso machine at a garage sale and everyone here tought me to realize that it wasn't really an espresso machine and I made it my goal this summer to find a real one that makes real espresso drinks. Well yesterday I found it I found a Delonghi Ec9355m La Specialista and got it for $100 I knew it was missing a couple pieces when buying which is why the price was so good but didn't think they'd be hard to find. Well I'm having trouble finding them so far. I found a water tank and portafilters on Amazon but 2 major pieces I'm missing is the bean container and lid for the grinder. If anyone knows where I might be able to find one I would greatly appreciate it!

2024.05.12 22:00 annalisa27 Desperately need watering advice for two newly planted trees

I just had a 3” caliper width Shishigashira Japanese Maple and a 1.75” caliper width Forest Pansy Redbud planted in my front yard in Portland, Oregon on May 9th. The soil is mostly clay, though I tried adding soil conditioner before the planting, and I had the crew that planted the trees use a compost/topsoil mix instead of the native soil to fill the hole. The planting was done by a company with a ISA-certified arborist, though the arborist wasn’t here at the time of planting. When I asked the crew that planted the trees for watering advice, I got different answers regarding watering frequency - one said daily, the other said weekly. The bigger problem is that I am not an experienced gardener, and I am not great at judging the right amount of water to give plants. With this in mind, what sort of watering system do you recommend? Should I install a drip irrigation system? Or should I use large buckets to measure the amount of water I should be giving the trees? I bought a moisture meter with an extra long probe in case that could maybe help me. Is that something I should be using? I really love these new trees, and any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated! As a side note, I know the stakes need to be fixed. A stump grinder damaged/shifted them on Friday, and I contacted the tree company about fixing/replacing them.

Buyer's Remorse? Go Back to Old, Sell the New?
I've had the pictured Estro Profi for about 20 years (this is the same machine that Starbucks sold around the year 2000). I don't make espresso or a latte very often but I like having a good machine. The espresso quality it excellent, btw. I don't use the excellent built-in burr grinder anymore because I got tired of the mess (always lots of grounds not landing in the portafilter). The real issue is the milk steaming ability--NOT good! It's very slow and it just doesn't make great quality sciuma ("foam"). Still, I don't need latte art to enjoy a good latte.
Recently, I hadn't used it for awhile and when I did, it just wouldn't make steam for more than a few seconds. Tried it again another day, same issue. Well, damn!
So I scored a killer deal on a brand new Breville Barista Express (significantly better than the current retail price of $560). But the tank was shattered on unboxing it and I'm waiting for a replacement (courtesy of Breville, thank you!) so it's still new and unused.
And today, I decided to descale all my coffee stuff--water boiler, coffee maker and the Estro Profi.
Naturally, the steamer works again (still slow but fully functional).
What do I do? Resell the Breville and go back to the "familiar"? Except for making better foam, it seems like it will take a lot of experimentation to make a good espresso with the Breville and that it requires as much or more cleaning than the Estro Profi. The reviews are excellent, it sells like hotcakes. Maybe I just have espresso machine FOMO and I want something shiny and new? Thoughts?
EDIT: I think I'm going to go with the new Breville. Why? Everything is new: seals, gaskets, rubber, plastics and scale-free tubing. I only paid $382 for the new Breville and it's highly unlikely that I'd be able to buy another one for less than regular or even sale retail pricing. If I use it as infrequently as I have been for making espresso and lattes, the new machine pays for itself (vs roughly $6 for a double latte including $1 for tip) in under 7 years, faster if I use it more frequently.

How do you do fellow sales grinders,
Title states the TLDR question. But if you want some context, I have some:
I guess my more in depth question is this:
Would it be prudent to ride this gig out for a year or two and then start hunting for AE roles? Really leverage the fact that I was more of a sales guy than a CS guy.

What’s wrong with microwaveable soups!
Dear soup enthusiasts, I’ve hit the Mecca of life. I LOVE soup and I just started a new job for a grocery store where my job is to pick the soup items! (Non-refrigerated soups)
I’ve been going through sales and I’ve come across something I’m stumped on. The microwaveable soups don’t really sell well! You’d think they’d work bc of the convenience of not having to cook, being on the go, and no dishes… convenient products seems to work in almost every grocery aisle I can think of.
Any thoughts on why items like these don’t sell in the microwaveable soup packs? If there’s something you’d change, what would it be?

2024.05.11 06:35 bix0r Upgrade from Mini Vivaldi II

Posting on my wife’s behalf as she’s having difficulty posting in this Reddit. ——————————
Curious about this group's perspective on upgrading from a nice but older Mini Vivaldi II. I hadn't thought much about upgrading until the Lelit Bianca sale caught my eye.
Is the Bianca an upgrade from my older Vivaldi Mini? If not, are there any upgrades (within my price range) worth exploring? My Vivaldi is probably about 12-13 yo. I bought it second hand about 8 years ago. It's in excellent condition and I've never regretted the purchase. But due to its age, it lacks some features - no pre-infusion, doesn't work with a smart plug, etc. The 53 mm group size is an annoyance: for example, my current tamper leaves just a bit of space around the edges. I can mod/buy new accessories, but the cumulative cost adds up, and I don't want to DIY. And I've wondered if all of these prevent me from getting a more consistently good shot. (Overall, my success varies.) It's also gotten more difficult to refill the water tank lately (sticky replacement).
I used to think a 58 mm portafilter's dimensions might pull better shots, but after reading more about the Vivaldi's saturated group, I'm not sure.
Interested me about the Bianca:
Flow control seems interesting to explore Pre-infusion Flexible water tank position and option to switch to plumbed in Rotary pump (seems generally higher quality) 58 mm group (?) Good size (machine is located under a cabinet) I live driving distance from Chris Coffee so service can be found as needed (but it's not so close that it's easy to go pop over and check out machines in person prior to the end of the Bianca sale) Nicer looks (never loved those of the Vivaldi) Don't mind the heat up time - being able to use a smart plug will seem like a luxury Comes with good accessories out of the box, saving money I also started looking at other options. Most Bianca competitors seem to cost around $3K. It's not appealing to spend $1K more for (apparently) not much difference in the machine. $4K (e.g. LM Micra) is the absolute outside range (and I'm not sure about the Micra's app, tight space, or its missing features). I wouldn't go any higher than that right now.
Other related info:
I don't like apps I am a casual user; I try to dial in and improve my shots, but won't be diving into the deep weeds. I weigh my beans and shots, time shots, use a WDT. I usually drink 1-2 lattes a day, occasional espressos or Americanos. I use fresh beans from Blue Bottle. My grinder is a Macap M4, which came with the Vivaldi - also old, with an annoying doser, and huge, but the grind is probably as good as I'll need. I'm not expecting an "end-gamer" but would want to use a machine for 5-10 years at least Vivaldi is my first really nice machine (used to have a Silvia/Rocky setup). Thanks for your thoughts!

1997 VT1100 Spirit
I know there's lots of explanations for LED Turn signals and so on.. BUT!! I'm so stumped right now..
Installed all 4 signals, pulled the indicator bulb and no issues ( so I thought) until the diode arrives.
After getting it back together I realized there was an issue with my headlight switch 😑. I replaced the entire assembly with a fresh OEM one. Voila! Headlight works but now my rear turn signals won't turn on, and my fronts just dim on the side I switch it too. Cleaned the switch with EC because I thought maybe there was too much grease in there, no luck. Double checked all wires and connectors, no luck.
Now for my questions Should the entire systems voltage reading be 12v from fuse to lights ? What connection(s) should I check for voltage? WWYD? BTW - She's definitely not for sale 😉🤫

2024.05.10 22:09 atthebeach_gsd Recommend me a machine please!

I currently have a Breville bambino but I overestimated how much work I was willing to put into making a drink... I came from a Nespresso (horrible customer service so I won't go back) but of course it was as easy as it gets.
Requirements: Super automatic. I don't want to think lol. Easy to clean. Ability to make cappucchino, latte, flat white, macchiato etc and iced versions of those (is this as simple as pouring over ice? In theory shouldn't the machine use less water and more coffee?). Obviously cheaper the better but I also am willing to spend a little more for quality/longetivity. Under $1K would be ideal and I can wait for sales. I don't drink espresso black, so I've been seeing the lattego as my best option. Basically I want to feel like I'm at Starbucks (what a boss I worked for called frou frou coffee lol)
I don't care about regular coffee (Americano) or cold brew as I make those separately now. This is for when I don't feel like coffee in the morning or I want a fun drink - iced caramel latte, etc. I mainly use almond or oat milk. I do have a bean grinder but I'm also happy to let the machine do the work.
(I'm located in the US)

2024.05.10 03:42 goljanoid Talk me out of a Rancilio Silvia Pro X

I have a 12-year-old Breville Barista Express and used the integrated grinder. I'm looking to upgrade because it's leaking intermittently and some components are breaking. I'd like to achieve better espresso flavor, better steaming, and a faster workflow for making two flat whites back to back; I only rarely make more than two drinks in a row. I'd like a hot water dispenser for americanos. And, I'd like a machine built like a tank that will last for years. I've already settled on the Niche Zero grinder and prefer dark roasts, generally.
I'm trying to decide on the espresso machine and have been leaning towards Rancilio Silvia Pro X given the excellent reputation and the dual boiler. I really like the auto-on feature, too: I get up quite early and often don't have time to wait 20-30 minutes for the machine to heat up before I need to leave the house.
But the Lelit Elizabeth seems to be on sale everywhere now and looks quite comparable. I'm willing to spend up to $2,000 on the machine, but would love to save some money if there is a cheaper but comparable or better machine I should be looking at. Any advice?
UPDATE: You’ve all failed, and therefore have succeeded in convincing me to buy the SPX. Thank you! It turns out, all I wanted in the end was validation. I hope you all have deliciously caffeinated weekends.

2024.05.10 03:10 faarst Catalog of every espresso machine model/version ever produced

Is there such a thing somewhere out there on the internet?
I don't mean "the best espresso machines of 2024" lists or sales blurbs, etc. I'm envisioning an extensive (in time, approaching exhaustive), well-organized, searchable/filterable wiki with pictures, timelines, ideally even lists of features, production details, etc. The more info, the merrier.
At the moment I'm just looking for a tool to use in FB marketplace shopping, but I also think it would be a real neat resource to have around. There are all sorts of crowdsource databases out there, and we all love to talk about coffee gear. Does this resource already exist somewhere?
(Same for grinders.)

Starting my collection!
I already had the Caribbean salt and pepper grinders from before, but went to the outlet today and got the risotto pot (sea salt), mini cocotte (coastal blue), and a utensil holder (coastal blue)! I originally just went to look at the colors to decide what to order but with the sales going on I just went for it!
I’m thinking at some point I’ll add some darker blue colors to balance the Caribbean color and then maybe nectar too!

2024.05.09 21:20 Getoutofmahswampp Trying to get rid of a burnt tree stump

Hello,
We have a cabin and the previous owner tried burning a huge stump in front of the home. The top is charred and way too rough for a chainsaw. (I tried 😅) We got rid of the surrounding roots but the main trunk is very hard to cut through. It is also too large in diameter for my chainsaw to cut underneath. Any recommendations on how to get rid of it? Or even soften it back up?
The cabin is too remote to rent a stump grinder. Burning is out of the question, aware of the dangers and it’s a recipe for a forest fire here.
