Can’t find info on this vintage AMC aka Aimcee console
I got this old console recently, but when I tried to replace the needle, it’s not clear how. The previous owner (maybe decades ago) left a GE EA1014 stylus in there (with blue plastic in last picture), but it doesn’t look right at all and definitely doesn’t slide in.
The manufacturer’s label inside says it’s an AMC (aka Aimcee) 13AF573A radio phono combination, but no arrangement of any of those terms gets me any results on Reddit, search engines, or the sites the various vintage audio type subreddits recommend.
It has the kind of cartridge where you can turn it so one side is a 33/45 needle and the other is a 78 needle, but both original needles broke off almost immediately once I started messing with it bc I’m a dope. The now empty cartridge is in the last 3 pictures, removed in the last one. Any help tracking down the right needle and/or stylus and/or cartridge would be greatly appreciated! (Also, apologies if I used the words stylus and cartridge incorrectly. I’ve used lots of record players but never did any maintenance on one.)

2024.05.16 01:18 unprocrastinate PC Part List Review

I'm building my 2nd computer, having built my first cheap budget build in 2017! I've been away from the scene for a while and not caught up on the latest trends so I'd really appreciate any feedback on this build. I will be using it for graphic design/productivity and a mix of 1440p casual gaming. I'm somewhat flexible with my budget but hoping to not go over CAD $2600 unless very beneficial.
Was going more for aesthetics as I don't realistically need a computer this powerful but if there's any better performing or alternative components please do let me know. Especially if any of these components, manufacturers, or sellers are known to cause issues. Thank you!!
SIDE NOTE:
Would the Gigabyte X670E AORUS PRO X be better than my current motherboard? It would cost me $160 more. I don't intend on overclocking my CPU but I was wondering if a X670E board would be better than a B650 in this scenario.

2024.05.16 00:42 Puddleduck112 Nagoya NA-771 VHF bands work great on UV-5G plus GMRS Baofeng radio, but doesn't on 5RM Baofeng(ham version). Any reason why?

I am struggling to understand why my Nagoya NA-771 VHF reception works great on the UV-5G plus GMRS radio, but doesn't work on the 5RM (ham version). I use NOAA channels to test reception and NOAA Den comes in clear on UV-5G Plus, but dead silent on the 5RM radio. This doesn't make any sense to me as the 5RM is an 8W radio and generally receives better overall then the 5G Plus GMRS radio. Does anyone know why this might be the case? The only antenna that I can get the 5RM to pull in NOAA is with the just the base of the ABBREE tactical. I have to remove the flex part in order for it to work, but the base works great. I am also about 3 miles and line of site to tower for regional airport and the ABBREE tactical (base only) is the only thing that works. I have several dual band antenna's and tried several others and none will pick up aviation on the 5RM. These radios are essentially the same accept the 5G Plus is locked for GMRS.

2024.05.16 00:30 Training_Indication2 Two Identical Quads?

I've finally reached a point in my our journey where I've amassed a good variety of quads from tinywhoop up to 7" from a variety of different frame manufacturers. I've destroyed quads a variety of ways, usually involving water, and now have a jug of conformal to coat all my electronics in. I've taken apart quads for parts to make new quads, and probably have enough spare parts I could put together a junker quad (minus VTX).
As I've got yet another quad on my bench assembling it, I think back to an idea I once read somewhere that suggested the idea of building two identical quads. The idea goes that it would cut down on cost of spare parts, similasame config to get used to flying, and insurance to stay in the air.
Personally, if I had to choose between building something totally new with different flying characteristics or to build a second one of what I already have, I would choose to build something new and different. I'm curious if this idea of building two identical quads is actually a real thing people do or if maybe most people are more like me and would rather build something new with their money.
TLDR-- Do you have any identical quads or are all of your quads different??
In case anyone is curious what is on the bench at the moment:

2024.05.15 23:47 isiyiu Which missions had the best build up/atmosphere?

I'm not talking which missions are the most fun from a gameplay perspective, but rather which missions do you think had the best build up / atmosphere when you play them? The gameplay/combat itself might not be the best, but I'm focusing on the environment & setting, the story, if there was any mystery, etc. My top list (in no particular order):
  1. Noveria: You are immediately hit with the realization that Benezia is there, upping the stakes right at the beginning. You have the juxtaposition of the cold corporate suits and the cold icy weather. And don't get me started on the mystery build up towards the Rachni reveal...from rumors and hints at the beginning to rift station and trying to get Mira online and figuring out what happened. The only thing that could've made this better is if the spoiler wasn't somewhat ruined by your UI saying "rachni" when you first encounter them, it could've said "unknown" or gibberish to add to the mystery. But overall just absolutely master storytelling.
  2. Priority Tuchanka: The stakes are already high with the cure to the genophage and a galaxy saving alliance on the line. You have the reaper in the distance waging war, then are forced to detour through ancient Tuchanka ruins. You see both the potential of a Krogan civilization full of culture as well as the violence and devastation they can bring about at the same time. Your squadmates argue over the right choice. You have the frantic radio chatter between Wrex, Eve, and Mordin as you're battling wave after wave of reaper troops. And if you go the evil route, the iconic line “I MADE A MISTAKE” as the walls crumble around you. This was, IMO, the peak mission of ME3.
  3. Ilos -> Battle of Citadel: Battling through the ancient Prothean city and racing against time, only to get to one of the biggest reveals in all of sci-fi gaming when you meet Vigil. And then you finally get back to the Citadel and have to fight your way up the SIDE OF THE GODDAM CITADEL TOWER with a giant space battle roaring above you. And of course you have the final showdown with Saren and possibly one of the most iconic speech checks in all of RPGs. And the final decision you make genuinely feels like the right decision could go either way, with your squadmates taking sides. What a way to end the first game in a bang.
  4. Jacob's loyalty mission: Okay, I know that most people hate Jacob. But man is his loyalty mission's atmosphere built up right. Investigating the mystery of the shipwreck, trying to find survivors, and slowly uncovering quite possibly the most disturbing crime committed in all of the trilogy. (The combat in this level absolutely sucks though...who thought it was a good idea to give enemies with SMGs zero bullet spread?)
  5. Suicide Mission: It's probably a cop out to put the SM on here when most players generally agree it's the best mission in all of ME. But I just cannot deny how hype the atmosphere is when you have your entire squad fighting against the clock on the collector base. Considering the stakes, seeing your past actions during the game pay off, and all of the possible combinations and variations of outcomes that can happen, this mission is probably the fondest memory for a lot of players. I still get an adrenaline rush every time Garrus says "Perfect" when he leads the 2nd fire squad.

2024.05.15 23:25 KingOfGlue Antenna Analysis Tutorials?

Hey guys, I'm looking for some tutorials or books on radio analysis; specifically, how I can check the impedance/quality(?) of an antenna without having to call an avionics tech out every time (just for diagnostic work and not for calibrated measurements or anything). I'm decent with electrical work and I'd appreciate some guidance in the right direction. So far I've found an open source project called NanoVNA but I have no idea if I'm on the right track (I only started looking into this about an hour ago lol).
Anyways, any guidance is welcome, thanks!

2024.05.15 20:46 OwnPerformance5984 NRF24 PA/LNA doesnt work

I have a problem with my NRF24 modules. I have one pair of the cheaper NRF24 modules (smaller, with antenna build in) which works fine, but I also bought pair of the more expensive and better NRF24 (a little bigger, with external longer antenna) but I cant make them work. Im using 2 arduino nano, one as a receiver and other as transmiter, the arduinos are fine, they worker with the cheaper NRF just fine. For the better ones I used the exact same code, exact same pins, I connected them correctly for sure.
What can be the problem? Does they need some different code or something?
This is code on transmitter code
#include  #include  #include  RF24 radio(7, 8); // CE, CSN const byte address[6] = "00001"; void setup() { radio.begin(); radio.openWritingPipe(address); radio.setPALevel(RF24_PA_MAX); radio.stopListening(); } void loop() { input = analogRead(A0); radio.write(&input, sizeof(input)); }
This is code on receiver code
#include  #include  #include  RF24 radio(7, 8); // CE, CSN const byte address[6] = "00001"; void setup() { Serial.begin(9600); radio.begin(); radio.openReadingPipe(1, address); radio.setPALevel(RF24_PA_MAX); radio.startListening(); } void loop() { if (radio.available()) { radio.read(&data, sizeof(data)); Serial.println(data); } }
The connections:

2024.05.15 20:31 Kudzupatch A bit of a mystery about speeds

I will try to keep this short but with all the facts.
Built a house on site. Antenna is on a tower there. SL router and ethernet adaptor are inside an outbuilding. Pulled 125-150 feet of thernet to the house.
Ethernet adapter to a Netgear switch with an ASUS router connected to the switch.
DL speeds over ASUS wireless are consistently in the 40 - 60 Mbps range.
Just moved my desktop in. Connected using Ethernet to the switch (wich is connected to the SL router) and I am consistently seeing speeds in 150 Mbps range. Never seen wireless speeds like this with either the SL or the ASUS router.
I know Ethernet is faster, that is why I pulled it through the house. But this difference just doesn't seem right. It is double. Makes wonder if there is some configuration issues?
And no, I have not connected by ethernet to the ASUS yet. I want to try it but I will be a while before I can.

2024.05.15 18:54 njtows Hide Nodes Lilygo T-Deck

I recently go two T-Decks for myself and my wife along with two Heltec V2s. I am new to Meshtastic, everything came in the mail about 2 days ago so forgive me if these are rudimentary questions. I did search and google first however I couldn't find a clear answer. Regarding the T-Decks, I want to be able to remove nodes from the "contact list" of nodes not pertaining to my wife and myself and people in my group.
We live in a high location and have line of sight to NYC. Even with the small antennas, we have about a dozen nodes popping up on our devices. For my wife (who has little patience for things like this unless I can just make things "work"), the extensive list of other contacts (nodes) on the device is making it difficult to use as an EDC messaging device. The scroll wheel is cumbersome and even for myself will end up selecting another node and just erratically jump around.
Unrelated question, I want to put one of the Heltecs on my LMHam radio tower. Would setting the device to repeater or router serve me better? The other Heltec would be placed across town which is line of sight from the LMR tower. Our daily routines are between the two hilltops so I figured that would provide decent coverage, if not complete coverage for the "downtown" area between the two mountains.
TLDR; is there a way to make the T-Deck only display ONE chat channel and no other nodes to simplify its operation. i.e. she could pick up the t-deck and it is forever displaying the one "group chat" channel window and not showing any nodes not affiliated to our group -- Thanks

2024.05.15 18:52 Certain_You_8814 User Interface

My primary experience has been with KiCad and I was interesting in transitioning to Altium as I move toward more complex designs. Moreover, I am interested in working on a mmwave antenna project and it seemed like Altium would do better with that, though I have no evidence for this. I am using the trial of Altium for now. I am trying to figure out if my experience is an anomaly and will get better or if I should abandon ship at this point.
I have been struck by how quirky the user interface is and generally have the impression that people must just get used to it and deal with it. Here are some examples of my experiences so far.
1) There is no way to define the "hot keys" for the system, and the way the mouse works is not user-defined, the most obvious issue being than you can't pan with the middle mouse click, which is common on CAD-like tools (this fills me with a general sense of frustration and helplessness because I don't have a feeling that they will improve this aspect - I did some Googling and there are people asking about this from 2015 so it is clear that this will never change).
2) The component library has a Manufacturer Part Search, but this seems to be primarily to find suppliers and not to find symbols/footprints/models (in this way, it is basically a specialized Google search). When you do find the CAD data, you have to go through an out-of-band process to actually install them - i.e., download zip file, browse to folder, unzip, double-click and install component (I do not understand why you cannot install/use the component from this menu?). I still don't understand how components are generally managed so I must be missing something. It is putting the components in the project menu as a peer to the schematic which does not seem correct/right/logical.
3) When adding new sheets to a schematic, you can either add a sheet icon/part or create a new sheet. Then you have to associate the sheet to the part manually. If you use the tool to create a new sheet from the part it does not automatically connect the sheet to the part (you still have to do it manually, I assume as a show of dominance?).
4) I loaded up a component that I wanted to use, the pins were unorganized so I wanted to clean it up. I load up the component and try to use the pin wizard (I forgot the actual name) to quickly move pins from left <-> right side, I tried to select multiple pins, this doesn't work. I tried to paste "right" to multiple pins and the paste goes to some other pin that is entirely unselected. From what I can tell, this tool entirely does not work and seems like a vestigial development from last year's intern.
I want to like this tool, is this the experience that I should expect to have or am I just experiencing the normal growing pains that will lead to greater efficiency/quality?
Thanks

2024.05.15 18:43 Illustrious-Wish779 Ham Radio audio question

I received my technical license recently and was struggling to listen to a conversation on an FM repeater.
I had plenty of signal, and when the repeater identified itself, it's audio level almost blasted me out of the room, but the people talking on the repeater had extremely low audio causing me to really crank the volume.
I also notice a bad hum on most repeaters. Some worse than others. Simplex transmissions do not have this hum.
I'm surprised amateur radio, in general has chronic bad audio for FM transmissions. Is it because most microphones in rigs are poor or are people talking on cheap HT's? I see where you can purchase $300 microphones. Does this allow you to have transmissions with better fidelity? Are manufacturers trying to reduce costs by using really cheap microphones in radios?
Any thoughts on this?
