Can you share your Ritalin experiences?

2024.05.15 14:56 Express_Collection_1 Can you share your Ritalin experiences?

I've been on Ritalin for a while but I don't see any improvement on myself... Theres very big ups and downs in my life lately.
My psychiatrist made me start with two capsules of 10mg, one in the morning and one in the afternoon after lunch.
What are your thoughts?? I know I should consult with him first but I'm scared of this medication to be honest...

2024.05.13 00:16 Pristine-Resistance7 What does it feel like to be under-medicated on your stimulant ADHD medication?

I'm familiar with what it feels like to be over-medicated, but at this point I think I'm under-medicated and I'm trying to define it. I feel less energetic, my anxiety is a bit worse, my ability to focus is meh, not bad, but meh.... I'm fatigued, but that could be something else.
We're adjusting my dose from starting a few weeks ago, and we just went from 10mg 2x a day (SA) Ritalin, to 1 10mg Ritalin LA, then 10mg short acting as a topper. I'm noticing the difference in the time I'm on the LA. I feel more steady as far as not feeling it peak and crash like the SA, but it feels like when I started on the 5mg 2x a day. The 10mg top off is great though. Gets me through my evening routines.
Anyhow, I'm having a hard time describing this, so I was wondering if you all could help. Thanks in advanced!

2024.05.12 22:26 rbecca08 Do any of you take these supplements?

Howdy!!
https://www.addysafe.org was a really good resource for me when I was taking Adderall XR. I’m curious if anyone has ever taken any of the recommended supplements with Vyvanse and what their experiences have been.
I’m definitely going to do more research on this. It mentions Ritalin too so I wonder if the advice works for all stimulants?
Here are some of the supplements listed:
“Memantine (Rx) can work well to reduce tolerance
Selegiline (Rx)
L-Tyrosine (after) (Helps replenish dopamine, which will help even out the highs and lows)
Omega 3 Fatty Acids (before/whenever) (General brain health)
Vitamin D (morning) (Mood)
Inositol (Reduces nail biting, hair pulling and other obsessive symptoms)
B12
B6
Piracetam”
“Before 10-30 minutes before.
Magnesium Glycinate: 1x200mg Pill (2,000mg magnesium glycinate, which is equivalent to 200mg elemental Mg)
(Use the linked brand. Many brands or formulations of magnesium have low absorption rates)
R-ALA: 1x100mg (Reduces neurotoxicity)
ALCAR: 1x500mg (Reduces neurotoxicity)
L-Theanine: 1x200mg (Helps prevent tolerance buildup, however more for reduction of anxiety/paranoia/irritability)
CoQ10: 1x100mg ("Extremely long half life antioxidant, various beneficial effects on mitochondrial function")
1-2x Tums, or 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda mixed in a glass of water (Potentiates Adderall due to reduction in stomach acidity)”
“After To help you: Go to sleep easier and feel better tomorrow.
Magnesium Glycinate: 1x200mg Pill (2,000mg magnesium glycinate, which is equivalent to 200mg elemental Mg)
(Use the linked brand. Many brands or formulations of magnesium have low absorption rates)
R-ALA: 1x100mg (Reduces neurotoxicity)
ALCAR: 1x500mg (Reduces neurotoxicity)
Vitamin C: 1000-2000mg (The acidity of vitamin-c will help reduce the effects of Adderall, making it easier to sleep)
Melatonin: 5-10mg roughly 30 minutes before bed (Keep in mind we are using a higher dose here for it's antioxidant properties. Normal dosages should be .5mg to 1mg.)”
Edit: formatting things to make it more readable (list above is copied directly from addysafe.org) ***Also please consult your doctor before taking anything!!

2024.05.12 20:23 IamFizzlord I am having thoughts like I may not have adhd and am just lazy and incompetent. Do you guys also have such thoughts?

Tldr: doc say I have adhd, gave med, doesn't work, I think I don't have it and am just incompetent. Have you ever felt that?
I got diagnosed with adhd and anxiety this year. My psych gave me a test where I ticked most of the symptoms of the inattentive type. He took a look at it and said I have adhd.
Then he prescribed me meds (methylphenidate 10mg something like Ritalin and SSRI). It improved my focus a little but also made my thoughts go brr. Later he increased the dosage to 20mg extend release. I barely felt any positive effwct from it but after 4-5 hrs, my heartbeat increases and I feel more anxious.
I started to think I may not have adhd and my doc made a mistake. It's my incompetence and I am blaming it on adhd. Have you ever felt like that?

2024.05.12 05:45 RandomApex_Kid101 Medication management during exams

I have ADHD and I need my adhd medication (Concerta and sometimes Ritalin) to focus on revision as well as think rationally (not make stupid mistakes) during exams. We live in a small country and it can take a while to get a new supply of meds, and we are running out. I have about twenty 10mg tablets (5 days) of Ritalin left, and about fifteen 36mg, three 27mg, and limited 18mg (my brother uses those) Concerta tablets left. I typically take 54mg of Concerta in order to operate like a 'normal' person, but obviously that won't be sustainable. I simply don't have enough medication to last until the end of exams (June 5th).
Does anyone have suggestions on what to do in this situation? I'm trying to ration the meds by taking 36mg of Concerta to study, but it barely works and I feel like I'm wasting them.

2024.05.11 16:30 shapeshiftingSinner Order of Meds?

(Question is in bold because I gave a lot of context.)
So I started propranolol/beta blockers(10mg that I take 3x a day, he originally said to start with 2 but to go up if I feel I need it. I'm prescribed the 3x daily already, though- and on the first day when I tried two, I felt my heart rate spike again after the second dose hit its' half life, so I moved to 3.)
Just started these on Wednesday, after seeing a cardiologist & being diagnosed with "Disorder of the Autonomic Nervous System- Unspecified". (I will hopefully be getting a TTT soon to narrow it down, but one of the receptionists said that I had to wait to be called about that one... I suspect it's HyperPOTS, personally. But rn it's just ~unspecified~ dysautonomia.)
I also have ADHD, and have been taking stims(ritalin) for that for over a year now, that is also 10mg that I take 3x a day.
((The stim does not significantly affect my heart rate, though. I've struggled with the high heart rate & blood pressure since I was 7 or 8 years old, 15-16 years ago, I just kept getting dismissed because of things like "You're young, you're just out of shape. Exercise." or "Do breathing exercises." or any other invalidating excuses they could find not to treat me, that were near impossible DUE to the condition I had remaining untreated.))
So; I've been staggering when I take them, because I feel like taking both at once might impair how they work? I've been taking my ritalin first, and then an hour later I'll take the propranolol.
My questions are -- Do I need to be doing this at all? Should I do it in the other order? Should I be putting more/less time in between them?
I'm nervous to call, because not only is my cardio out of the office for a couple weeks- But also last time I had a question, the receptionist was really rude & tried hanging up on me. (The next receptionist was kind and when I mentioned this experience, she apologized and said she thinks she knows who it was- But now I'm still nervous that I'm gonna get that rude lady again... I did have someone suggest to call the pharmacist and ask, I might end up doing that.)
These aren't the only meds I'm taking- I also take Buspirone 15mg 3x Daily, Lamictal Xr 50mg 1x Daily, and Mirtazapine 22mg (1.5 15mg Pills) 1x Daily. Along with a few supplements, Vitamin B Complex, Vitamin D, and Calcium.
I also have a genetic resistance to SSRIs. I tried several in my teen & young adult(younger adult? I still count as a young adult I guess. I'm 23 now.) years. I know those are first option for mental health & also an option for dysautonomia- But they are not an option for me at all due to genetics.
I know the buspar & mirtazapine are also supposed to lower heart rate, and ritalin spikes it in some people- But I'd guess that I'd probably be doing pretty bad by now if they were interacting in a bad way?
But I'm not doing bad at all- This is the closest to normal my heart rate has been (highest it got going up stairs yesterday was 120! Usually it's 150-160. I also didn't get an adrenaline dump when I responded to an online comment, which is a first for me), and this is the ABSOLUTE BEST that my mental health has EVER been!
I just want to make sure I'm getting the full positive affect I possibly can from my medications, and that I'm doing my best to avoid any potential complications.

2024.05.11 13:27 lunesereine Concerta shortage still and can't with Medikinet

I guess you can't do anything for me, but it's been almost two months on Medikinet, due to the Concerta shortage. And I'm getting so sick of it. It makes me super thirsty in the morning, and lately kind of anxious, even though it's hasn't been an issue for me for about 6 months or so, thanks to PMR therapy and sertraline 50mg. Plus I've been experiencing some bruxism/jaw clenching for 5 days, and * misophobia the comeback yeah * and even though Concerta 18 is scheduled to be back in stock in May, no news for now. And it's my birthday on Wednesday, so it's kind of immature or useless of me to rant, but I wish I was feeling better when I'm turning 25, which is kinda milestone... I also tried to do 2 Ritalin EX 10mg but it's the same... I'm so frustrated because like an addict or something, I kept my last Concerta 18mg to use on my birthday to, you know, feel good... Anyway, it'a not a cry for help because I'm supported and everything, but just a rant. Anybody else in Europe in the same situation ?

2024.05.11 12:23 springcrows We know about afternoon booster, but what about morning booster before "actual" dose kicks in? (concerta)

(TLDR at the bottom)
I’m almost convinced methylphenidate just doesn’t really work for me tbh, but I have no other option if it doesn’t, every other type of meds (even non stims like strattera) is unauthorized here, so I’m still trying to hold onto some sort of hope lol.
These past few weeks have felt like NOTHING is working, neither my at the time prescribed 30x2 Medikinet XR, nor the leftover 10-30s mg Ritalin XR I had, nor the leftover 10s Quasym (30/70% release) a (also dx) friend had lent me to test at the beginning when I had only tried Ritalin IR and I was having side effects…
Last appt I told my doc I felt like it wasn’t doing much again, and he put me on concerta because I told him about the early crashes, and being bored out of my mind and falling asleep at my desk at 3pm. He was/is hoping the longer acting will help, but I haven’t found much improvement.
It’s kinda weird and hard to explain, but I feel like, until I upped my doses of medikinet (I went from 15x2, to 20x2, to 30x2) it was working then! like it wasn’t perfect and I never had the amazing obvious focus but I could see looking at things I’d done the past days/weeks/months give a hint about it "actually working a bit". But when I went onto medikinet 30x2 I started feeling nothing anymore. So eventually I decided to try just 30 (as I knew too high of a dose could be worse) and I feel like it worked again? So I tried another day, and it did too! But then on the 3rd day it was back to nothing.
Summary of meds I tried: Ritalin IR (10mg, upped to 2-3 per day I believe) — because of jitters and agitation/anxiety I went to Ritalin XR, 10 and 30s (I was taking 30 or 40 depending on how jittery I felt) — then the jitter wasn’t getting better, so I went onto Medikinet (twice a day, totaling 30, then gradually 40 and 60), and the jitters had lessened but that’s when I started realizing it almost felt like I took nothing. Sure the jitters were gone but any effect whatsoever was as well, I was maybe lucky to, 1 day out of 3?? feel somewhat focus 1h after taking it, and for maybe 1h, but it didn’t help anything because it was short and unpredictable. — So now recently I went onto concerta, easing with 36mg first for side effects, and we’re planning to try 54 next (probably). I feel like it helped a bit the first day but the next days I wasn’t feeling much again.
It’s been really hard because I’ve been doing this for 7 months now and I get so easily obsessed with "if it works or not" and I KNOW it’s not the way to go, and I’m also wondering if that isn’t playing a part in me thinking I feel nothing but… yeah, I can’t help it. I feel stupid and impatient/like a brat, and also when I try with leftover meds, like I’m not doing it the way prescribed and it’s eh and I’m "playing around" with it (and kind of a « well of course you feel it doesn’t work you keep switching duh!! »), but I’m just so desperate to find something that just. works. and doesn’t feel too much like a sugar pill 🙁
Before thinking about this (what I’m asking about below), I was almost thinking of asking to go back to IR multiples times a day, even if it caused me jitters, because even if the anxiety was annoying I feel like I could at least tell when it helped me focus despite that. But I also felt bad obviously because what if the jitters are stronger than I remember and it’s unliveable so I have to switch back to ????god knows what and my doc is at its wits ends annoyed with me.
TLDR: my issue is, since concerta is releasing slowly at first, I’m having trouble initiating anything and end up still pacing around for 3+ hours before managing to get my body to my desk (and cross fingers I don’t get up in 2 min again). Would it be logical to take an IR booster WITH the concerta? So that it would help me until the concerta does its (more peak) job? Does anyone else do that? Decided by yourself or also approved by your docs?
I’ll ask my doc what he thinks next time, but tbh I’m asking for your experiences first as I’m afraid of his reaction, like thinking I’m doing too much or asking for too much or IDK (plus it’s hard since the prescription is very strict, he can’t just be like @ pharmacy "so X pills and oh uh yeah 5 or 10 or idk 23 of the IR ones! maybe they’ll need em maybe not. huh? overdosing/abusing risks? oh yeah not my problem. yep, thanks!"
I hope someone can relate… (also sorry about this being so long help)

I just started 40 mg Prozac and I also take 10mg buspirone twice a day and 5/10mg Ritalin in the morning AND klonopin as needed. I know if I’m going to drink I won’t take the klonopin but im just wondering if you get drunk faster or have more adverse side effects, for reference I was on 40mg celexa before with all the other meds and I didn’t feel like there was any adverse side effects like blacking out or getting sick or what have you. But I’ve never done research on Prozac until just now and can’t find a thread about it

I’m 19yo recently diagnosed and I’m wondering how long I should trial medications before changing doses or before changing meds altogether?
I started with Ritalin 10mg IR 2x a day and the first dose was like magic but from then on I didn’t feel much of a difference and after trialing a few other meds I am now on Concerta 27mg but still don’t feel much. 2024.05.10 19:38 RRaoul_Duke Is it safe to take Ritalin the day after Adderall?

I've been prescribed both (ADHD-PI) and I generally take Adderall because it's a little more powerful and the comedown doesn't put me in an awful mood, but I believe that I'm a slow metabolizer and even when I take it in the morning (10mg IR at say 9AM) it messes up my sleep that night. I also have Ritalin, also IR because again the effects last a while, but not as long as Adderall. I'm pretty tired from yesterday but still need to study for finals, I took my Adderall at around 10 or 11 yesterday, is there a possibility that taking the Ritalin 24 hours later (maybe 10-15mg total of IR) could interact with yesterday's Adderall still in my system? I don't want to deal with any potential health issues. I am exceptionally paranoid about the possibility of drug interactions.

2024.05.10 14:09 Cheap-Criticism6391 Done with Concerta. Found my perfect dose ritalin but there is a but…

I’ve been on Concerta for a few months now after initially being on ritalin IR. I switched to Concerta due to it being so short acting and having awful crashes where I basically couldn’t move from fatigue.
At first, I really liked Concerta. I was dealing with headaches but pushed through as so many people say it’s an early side effect that subsides. After a few months on it I was finding it very inconsistent and the headaches turned into full blown migraines every single day and it got to the point where I completely stopped taking my meds.
I realised about a fortnight ago I still had leftover ritalin from when I was first diagnosed (initially on 10mg once daily) and thought what the hell, maybe I’ll try it again. I started off with 10mg in AM and 10mg in PM which worked ok and I didn’t have that awful crash but the positive effects were short lived, so I titrated myself up to 20mg AM and 20mg PM and can I just say WOW, I found my sweet spot! Zero headaches, incredible focus, smooth long lasting energy, impulse control over things I hadn’t even realised I was being impulsive with until now, and my anxiety has vanished. Even my RSD has improved… I had a situation today at work where I made a mistake and a partner picked it up and I of course completely crumbled but then the most incredible thing happened, 5 minutes into my world ending I realised it wasn’t actually that big a deal and moved on with my day!!!!
This is all wonderful HOWEVER….
How do I explain to my Psychiatrist that I’ve gone off and played with the dosage and now want to switch from Concerta to 20mg ritalin twice a day? How do I get that across without sounding like I’m abusing my meds? I realise I shouldn’t have taken it upon myself to play round with my meds but I’m sick of dropping a heap of money each money on 5 minute appointments just to make slight adjustments to meds.

2024.05.10 11:52 NeuroC8H11NO2Synapse Kombination aus Elvanse + unret. MPH

Hi, hatte mal geschaut, es gibt zwar Infos/Erfahrungsaustausch, aber die meisten sind älter.
Nehme derzeit morgens Elvanse 70mg und meistens um 14 Uhr und um 18 Uhr, 10mg unret. MPH.
Meine Medikamenten - Geschichte begann mit Retardierten Ritalin. Allerdings in Dosierung 30/20/20 in 4h Abständen.

2024.05.10 01:53 Zealousideal-Turn277 How to know when to switch/increase/decrease meds?

Hi Spicy Brain Family,
As I’m sure this is a question many of us encounter, especially with ‘chasing the dragon’ however,
I’ve asked a few friends and others on meds their experiences with medications and what they ‘felt’ in order to get a good understanding of what should be expected (Obviously note everyone is individual and results may vary).
I was initially prescribed : - 1month : Ritalin 10mg x2 a day, (felt nothing)whilst my psych received my assessments to diagnose (trial script)
-1month : Increased to 20mg x2 a day and quite quickly had to decrease to 30mg (20mg AM, and 10mg PM) as I was getting headaches and jitters? (Full disclosure, I was consuming 1-2 coffees a day, double shots, so I’m not sure if this caused any skewed results to go off)
During the above period my wife and I made some huge life changes (sold and bought a new house rural, for better QOL for the kids)
My question is, the psych always asks ‘any notable side effects’? And always has, but how am I to know what a side effect is when I’ve barely been able to think for myself and basically told how to feel (thanks transgenerational trauma)
I know that everyone’s dose/medication requirements are all different, but the costs are really starting to stack up.
Anyone who’s jumped around on meds could you please weigh in? I feel as though I had the sweet point on 30mg vyv (am currently self titrating to this from my 50’s)
I was trying to keep this short, but yeah novel again, thanks for reading and providing insight/input xx

2024.05.09 18:48 MRRN94 Emotional at end of dose

Hello!
I had been taking Ritalin 5mg IR twice a day, that was working great, literally life changing. I have a calmness I had never had and am out of my head and into my body for the first time in my memory. Recently I switched to Ritalin 10mg ER just for ease of taking the medication. I'm still trialing it and figuring out if it's a good fit. One thing I have noticed when I presume my medication is "wearing off" around 530-6pm I am very emotionally labile and exhausted - mentally and physically. I did NOT have this on the IR, is this common? Any ideas of how to manage this? Should I go back to IR?

2024.05.09 14:07 t-wellick Lexapro for stimulant (for adhd) induced anxiety. I need hope and support!

I take methylphenidate (ritalin) for adhd. While it helps a great deal with focus it also comes with immense physical anxiety. Amphetamine based drugs aren’t allowed in my country. Non-stimulant options are useless.
For this reason the doctor prescribed lexapro 10mg, but I need some assurances drawn from your experience that it can help with this problem specifically.
Otherwise I will have to quit adhd meds. If I do that I’ll get fired. If I don’t quit adhd meds I’ll fricking die from the anxiety.
I feel trapped.
I am not looking for medical advice, having said that I can’t contact my psychiatrist 24/7 and every visit costs a ton of money so that’s why I am asking for other people’s experiences.

2024.05.09 07:57 PrimaryCold7415 Does Ritalin Cause Acid Reflux/ GERD?

Hi Friends, i have been having a persistent dry cough for the last 4 months , i have realised that it's GERD, or o.wise know as Acid Reflux. Alos, i have noticed that the Ritalin 10mg i have taking is also contributing to the acid reflux, causing a flare up of the symptoms, especially coughing. I am considering getting off the meds as at the moment the coughing is more disturbing than the ADHD symptoms. But the meds do really help keep my motivation at work, and from getting in trouble for work-related delays. If anyone has a similar experience , would love to hear about it. Thanks .

2024.05.09 05:12 Primary_Blueberry_24 thought we hit the med jackpot---now we have to switch

My son (13yo) has tried pretty much everything in the methylphenidate category. They all caused decreased appetite, except for Jornay. It was great because it kicked in first thing in the morning, didn't affect his appetite, and didn't impact his sleep. He took a Ritalin booster as needed in the evenings for sports, but it wore off by the time he got home so he would eat a good dinner after that.
He metabolizes medication extremely fast and unfortunately we have maxed out the Jornay dosage. He switched to the highest dosage a few months ago and everything was going well, but for the past few weeks he has felt it hasn't been working as strongly or as long as it used to. It has been impacting his behavior in school and his grades.
We met with his doctor yesterday and she thinks we should try the amphetamine category. She wants to start with 10mg Adderall XR and then 10mg IR as a booster if needed.
I'm having so much anxiety over making the switch because I'm so worried it'll affect his appetite and/or his sleep. Once we found Jornay and it worked so well for him, I was so relieved that we didn't have to worry about lack of appetite or sleep anymore. He plays sports and has been trying to put on some muscle but all the progress he has made may disappear.
I'm really hopeful that it will be a smooth transition. Has anyone's child switched from methylphenidate to amphetamine? How did it go?
