2024.05.17 01:37 Helgafjell4Me Irrigation pipeline group telling members we have to help clean debri off the gate

I've lived in this house for 13 years and have secondary irrigation that is fed off of a canal a ways up the hill from me. I only use the water for my yard, but we've got several people on the pipe with large lots they water for crops or livestock. This year they are making up a schedule for all the members to take turns cleaning the crap off the gate which causes reduced flow. They have said that this can require several hours of work twice or three times a day when the canals get bad later in summer. There was a member that had been taking care of it for years, but they moved last year and now they expect the rest of us to share in the work of keeping the water flowing.
I personally feel like this shouldn't be my responsibility. I do not have the time or energy to be driving up the hill to slog out a debri screen multiple times a day so that these farmers can run their 100+ sprinkler heads for a crop they profit from, when my personal use is a drop in the bucket.
I have no problem paying my share for repairs or upgrades on the main line and taking care of repairs on my own property, but can they really expect us to do this? I feel like I'm going to piss some of them off if I refuse, but there are several of us that just have small yards we water and full time jobs that keep us busy enough already. We're not farmers like them just driving around the fields all day. Is there an legal precident for refusing manual labor for somthing like this? I own shares in the water and I pay my taxes on that water, but the pipeline itself is under a private LLC.

2024.05.17 00:59 LaceyBloomers The actor who plays Darrien

Tom Goodman-Hill did an incredible job playing Darrien.
When Darrien first appears in the show and sidles up to Donny, I immediately felt stranger danger. Without knowing anything about what would happen later, Goodman-Hill was able to raise my alarm bells immediately with the vibe he created for Darrien.
I’m curious if any of you felt alarm bells as well without knowing what Darrien would do later?

MARINES AMBUSH FEMA Brigands in Storm-Stricken NEBRASKA. April 28, 2024
A White Hat blockade prevented an armed FEMA convoy from entering the tornado-ravaged suburb of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Saturday morning after a violent twister outbreak razed hundreds of homes and businesses and left citizens stunned and clamoring for necessities such as food, water, shelter, and electricity.
Two days earlier, Marine Corps Forces Cyberspace Command eavesdropped on a telephone conversation between FEMA Director Deanne Criswell and a Mission Support Associate Administrator Tami Franklin. The tyrannical twosome discussed the National Weather Service’s heightened risk for a tornado outbreak in the Great Plains and mentioned having a “survey team” ready to assess future storm damage. A seemingly prophetic Criswell suggested having a caravan prepared to “roll into Omaha” once the storms dissipated, prompting an inquiry from her subbordinate: “Armed?”
“Standard procedure,” Criswell replied. “But be cautious. We’ve taken too many losses lately.”
Given FEMA’s history of terrorizing and burglarizing storm victims, Cyberspace Command notified General Smith, who asked if they got a bead on Criswell’s location. He was told that the elusive FEMA administrator had made the call from Switzerland. Criswell is among the horde of despotic Deep Staters who have been hiding abroad to avoid getting picked up and shipped to Guantanamo Bay.
“These guys just won’t stop. You’d think they’d be a bit more cautious after the pasting we gave them in Maui. Their endurance is…surprising,” a source in Gen. Smith’s office told Real Raw News.
He added that FEMA’s longevity is largely contingent on its access to unlimited cash and willingness to employ convicted felons. The agency is currently binge-hiring, offering $30/hr. in a desperate effort to replenish its rank and file. Our source said White Hats accessed FEMA’s application database and found it was indiscriminately glossing over felonies that preclude government employment and firearm possession.
“Kidnappers, sexual assault, home invaders—FEMA doesn’t care,” our source said.
He compared Criswell to actor Cliff De Young’s portrayal of abolitionist Col. Jay Montgomery in the 1989 film Glory, wherein the jayhawker pillaged and firebombed the city of Darien, using hatred of slavery as a pretense for personal profit.
“FEMA has coffers of cash and black budget surplus in overseas accounts—they plunder because they enjoy it. Any FEMA employee taking up arms against or robbing citizens is guilty of treason. And Gen. Smith expected that would happen if FEMA rolled into Omaha if a storm struck,” our source said.
Upon hearing the call between Criswell and Franklin, the general activated two rifle platoons and had them flown to Offutt AFB, a White Hat-controlled installation in southeast Omaha. As they prepared for a possible engagement, Cyber Space Command monitored FEMA’s tactical frequencies hoping to glean the agency’s next move. That information came late Friday evening after devastating tornadoes flattened homes in the Omaha suburb of Elkhorn.
“Intel was an ‘advance damage assessment team’ would arrive in Elkhorn at first light. Damage assessment team is really lingo for terrorizers. We got word they’d be coming into Elkhorn from Lincoln on Highway 6, and the general decided we’d have an ambu—a surprise for them,” our source said.
The Marines, he added, positioned vehicles on either side of the Ashland Bridge spanning the Platt River, while a reconnaissance team drove toward Lincoln in a civilian car in search of FEMA raiders. At 3:45 a.m., the recon team spotted six SUVs with FEMA decals on the doors and two tactical mobile command centers driving north toward the bridge.
The FEMA convoy rolled to a stop after crossing the bridge, its forward motion halted by a Humvee roadblock and 50 Marines pointing rifles and a couple of AT-4 rocket launchers at the lead vehicle. The platoon leader, a lieutenant, made clear his intent: a bullhorn amplified his voice as he informed FEMA that arming themselves or retreating would end with their destruction. The rear element remained hidden on the opposite side of the river in case FEMA foolishly tried to flee.
Marines swarmed the FEMA cavalcade, pulling supervisors and grunts from their vehicles and restraining them. The Marine lieutenant told the FEMA agent-in-charge (AIC) he intended to inspect FEMA’s cargo for weapons.
“If all you’re carrying is food and water and not guns, you’ve nothing to worry about,” the lieutenant told him.
The AIC, however, said the Marines had no authority to delay his “mission of mercy,” though he admitted to having a small stash of firearms, purely for self-defense.
The minuscule stash, our source said, turned out to be 34 M4 Carbines, 27 Glock 23 pistols, 3 M24 Sniper Weapons Systems, and a plethora of ammo. Although FEMA had enough weapons to wage a small war, it carried not a single MRE or bottle of water, nor any relief supplies to aid the now homeless residents of Elkhorn.
“We’ll be confiscating these,” the lieutenant told the AIC.
While frisking the AIC, the lieutenant found what our source called a smoking gun on him, a document that held the names and addresses of Elkhorn’s wealthiest residents. It listed their jobs, annual incomes, and whether they had ever filled out Form 4473—the ATF’s mandatory firearms transaction record.
“Good day for gun confiscation, is it?” the lieutenant said to the AIC.
The AIC protested: “We just need to know who has guns for our safety.”
“You’re not going to Elkhorn today,” the lieutenant replied. “In fact, you’re not going anywhere—except to GITMO, you and your whatever you call yourselves—team leaders. The rest of your ‘relief team’ can leave, back to whatever rock you crawled out from. Your men can tell Criswell she’s not welcome here, not welcome anywhere.”
Disarmed and disheartened, the FEMA convoy left without having burgled or terrorized a single resident.
“The lead and three others we got will be treated as enemy combatants,” our source said. “Marines are still in the area, in Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa, and they’ll repel or eliminate any further FEMA invaders,” our source said.
Edit: Our source the Marines had a “tactical reason” for releasing the bulk of FEMA’s forces, but he wouldn’t clarify the reason.
Correction: We orginally reported that Criswell had spoken with Erick Leckey. This was an error. Source merely identified the contact as a mission support administrator, and I, not remembering the contents of every article written, forgot Leckey was captured in Hawaii last year. We reached out to our souce for clarification, and he identified the other party as Deputy Associate Administer Tami Franklin. We have corrected the article to reflect this.

2024.05.17 00:19 miaelise Recommendations for apartment buildings that work with bad credit?

I’m currently looking at apartments around DC and while I overqualify in the income department, my crappy credit from a tumultuous time years ago is getting me denied. My partner has volunteered his excellent credit, but unfortunately doesn’t meet the income requirements to qualify on his own for the units I’m interested in and I’ve been told by some leasing offices a guarantor has to make 4x the rent. I suppose we could co-apply, but I don’t want to shell out $100 just to hear the same thing again and he wouldn’t even be living there.
Are there any buildings or management groups that are especially wholistic in their approach to tenant screening and would be likely to approve me and/or me and my partner on our combined merits? I check all the other boxes as far as background, previous rental history, stable job, etc, and can handle a higher security deposit.
I’m also keeping an eye out for subleases, English basements, condos, but pickings are slim and often require you to meet the management company’s requirements aka 670+ credit score.
TIA for any leads!
ETA: beggars can’t be choosers but as far as location goes I’ve been looking around DuPont, Logan, NoMa, Navy Yard, Capitol Hill, and would also consider Arlington and Alexandria.

2024.05.16 23:52 Coyote_Havoc Gallóglaigh: Fáilte Abhaile

First Previous
"Arran of many stags, the sea strikes at her shoulders, companies of men can feed there, blue spears are reddend amongst her boulders. Merry hinds are on her hills, juicy berries are there for food, refreshing water in her streams, nuts in plenty in the wood."
-Agalllamh na senorach-
"Don't say goodbye, wish me luck and a swift return."
Sorcha's words echoed in Robert's head as he watched the transports race the local star into the sky. Robert was the last to leave the cargo bay, wanting to remain in her presence for as long as possible. It was childish now that he thought of it, but it had earned him a long, deep kiss and a promise she would come back to him soon.
The port where they had been dropped off was located on a cliff overlooking the sea, and the golden light of dawn was echoed on the incoming waves. Beyond the tarmac, grass and bushes grew unhindered and thin trees towered over the terminal. Robert led the 449th toward the building which was built to resemble something out of a story book. A faux thatch roof hung over white walls resembling rough hewn stone while a clocktower with a black slate roof rose from behind. It was a beautiful example of deceptive architecture to give a weary traveler a sense of tranquility. The main concourse radiated the same fairy tale charm with shops lining the interior between cobblestone walkways and a grassy area with long wooden benches under manicured alder trees.
To the casual observer it was a welcome distraction from the busy day to day worries of modern life, to the former convicts who were used to concrete, reinforced walls and armed guards it was heaven on earth. Robert's troops ignored the benches to lay in the soft grass, a luxury unaffordable to the soldier and the convict alike, drawing looks of curiosity from travelers as well as shop workers and Robert had to fight the urge to join his men in this simple pleasure. Finding a seat on a bench, he sufficed himself by running his left hand through the soft blades where the unit colors had been planted.
"How long have you all been fighting?" A stranger asked.
"Feels like forever." Robert replied feeling a pang of guilt at not telling the whole truth.
"Just passing through?" The stranger inquired.
"Here to stay, at least for a while I hope." Robert said.
The strangers face brightened and his eyes reflected the smile that he wore.
"Fáilte Abhaile Óglaigh," He said before continuing to his gate.
Gallóglaigh was the only word Robert knew in Gaelic, and it became apparent that he would have to learn quickly as other people took notice of the rag-tag unit relaxing in the grass. Gallóglaigh meant young soldier he surmised, so óglaigh probably meant soldier, but 'saighdiúir' as well as 'laoch' was also directed at him and his men. Laoch sounded bad, but the people who said it smiled and shook hands with him. 'Saighdear' sounded like 'saighdiúir' and he had no idea what 'ghaisgich' meant, but every face told them how happy they were to meet them. 'Tha gaol agan ort' and 'Is Breà liom tú' found their way to his troops, mostly from women and a number of them tried to pronounce the words themselves which caused more confusion and a few impromptu lessons on pronouncing the words followed by a kiss on the cheek or forehead.
Robert was seriously considering reigning in his troops when he heard a more familiar language from a weathered older man with an amused smile.
"May I assume you're Colonel Grant of the 449th?"
"Yes sir." Robert replied.
"Perfect, I'm your escort, Brian McMurray," he said, "whenever you're ready please follow me."
Robert was able to contain the enthusiasm of his rowdy batch of heathens before they could caused any trouble, to the further amusement of their escort, and they wove their way through the port with the expert guidance of Brian McMurray who led them to several busses waiting just outside the passenger entrance. Troops were filed onto four of the vehicles and Robert was guided to an open deck with his officers while the lower deck of the front vehicle would carry the remaining troops. Brian sat in the front and swiveled his seat around to address them.
"I do apologizefor not having an air transport to meet you, but the MacSweeney family was able to charter these coaches at the last minute." Brian said as the coaches began to move.
"MacSweeney?" Hobbs said under his breath.
"Shut up Cyrano." Robert ordered.
"It's alright Colonel," Brian said, "Yes Captain, Laird Collin MacSweeney, Governor of Arran. Have you heard about him before?"
Hobbs eyes grew wide and he shook his head to indicate he hadn't. Robert turned a shade of red, Jacob and Derrick had the common sense to hold their tounges. Thomas on the other hand...
"Collin MacSweeney, son of Aaron MacSweeney, current lord of the MacSweeney family. Descending from Suibhne O'Niall, chieftain of Argyll. Aaron MacSweeney, settled Arran with the last Gaelic speaking people from Ireland and Scotland in order to preserve their heritage."
"Thank you,Captain Reed." Robert said, half relieved Hobbs had been bailed out, and half curious how Thomas knew so damn much.
"Rather impressive summary I must say," Brian replied, "anywho, the languages you were having trouble with and the history of this world will be made available to your troops, please do study it to prevent any unfortunate misunderstandings. We should be arriving in Brodick Castle shortly."
"If I may," Robert asked, "What is the history and population of Arran?"
"Certainly," Brian replied, "Arran Colony was started with the last 1000 Irish and Scots Gaelic people on Earth. With a bit of hard work and luck we settled the planet as an agriculture world, primarily ranching but expanding into other crops and fishing as well as natural textiles and some light mining and mineral refinement. Today Arran has a population of just over four million."
4 million, from the look of the small port town which hugged the harbor you wouldn't know it.
"And the port city?" Robert inquired.
"Brodick." Brian explained. "The harbor on this island is almost an exact match of Brodick on Earth, so the island was named Brodick as well as the city we just passed through and the MacSweeney family have called it home ever since."
"Brod..."
Robert shot Hobbs a murderous glance before he could finish and the rest of the trip was conducted in silence.
The chartered coaches pulled onto a gravel driveway in front of an amazing castle, built stone by stone into an exact replica of the one on Earth. Troops were ordered to disembark and form ranks below a massive tower that loomed regally over them. An equally impressive man exited to greet the arrived troops, wearing a fine wool suit and a red and black kilt shot through with yellow covered slightly by a leather sporran with polished silver trim. Robert waited for Hobbs to call it a skirt, and was thankful that he remained silent.
"Fáilte Abhaile." Laird MacSweeney said in a neutral tone.
"Apologies sir," Robert replied nervously, "but the men don't speak much Gaelic yet."
"No worries," Laird MacSweeney said, "but 500 does not a regiment make."
"No sir." Robert replied. "We are what's left from Diani unfortunately."
Laird MacSweeney nodded quietly. "We shall have to remedy that. Carry on."
Robert rendered a salute "On the orders of the Terran Military, The 449th Infantry Regiment has been reassigned to Arran SIR!"
Laird MacSweeney returned the salute and began to speak.
"I know who you are and where you came from. I expect all of you to act like civilized people, not the convicts you were previously. Think carefully how you conduct yourselves here on Arran. Housing accommodations for the command staff will be here at the castle, company commanders and enlisted will be housed temporarily in a hotel in the city. This is your second chance gentlemen, you will not recieve leniency from me or my people."
Laird MacSweeney paused momentarily to let the warning sink in.
"With that being said, you are owed three months of pay, which has already been taken care of, and I believe a week furlough is in order to acclimatize you to Arran. Be responsible and respectful, but please enjoy yourselves. Colonel Grant."
Robert nodded and rendered salute again before turning and shouting "DISMISSED!"
The unit cheered at their freedom, but returned the the coaches in a somewhat orderly fashion. Robert tensed slightly at the thought of what they might do if not under watch, and the hand placed lightly on his shoulder made him flinch inside.
"Calm yourself Colonel," Laird MacSweeney said in a gentle tone, "You have a lot of work ahead of you yo get your unit properly organized, but you've done an excellent job considering."
"Thank you sir." Robert replied. "If I might ask, what does Fáilte Abhaile mean?"
Laird MacSweeney chuckled as Robert turned to face him.
"We shall have to remedy that as well." Laird MacSweeney replied.
"Fáilte Abhaile means Welcome home."

2024.05.16 23:27 Particular-Creme-83 It Finally Happened For Me!

I was offered a job on the spot. I would always read these post about job offers and would wonder my goodness, will I ever be able to write one? I have been out of work for 8 months….It’s a management position making 10K less then I was at my prior role, but I don’t care! I’m going to be working again. We were on the verge of losing our home, late on the car payment and just heading down hill fast. It seems it always happens this way: I was not excited about this interview because I was just so tired of being turned down everywhere. I spend forever on my hair, make it really straight this may sound trivial, but it’s what I do. I didn’t straighten my hair, I left it naturally curly and I just went in and gave it my best shot. (I was dressed professionally)… I was shocked when they came back about 10 minutes and said we want to formally offer you the job -verbally. Just received my offer letter. I’m wishing all of you that are still looking the very best, I know your tears, pain & worry; it’s awful I know, but the cloud will run out if rain.🙏🏽

2024.05.16 23:21 Warm_Assignment3970 Lost my soul dog

Almost 3 weeks ago I lost my soul dog very suddenly. We were coming back from a walk and her hips started to give out. This had only happened one other time previously about a week prior during a longer walk and I just resigned that her body was showing me what her new limit was. We had dropped hikes two years ago after she was struggling and falling on our last one together, and our walks were getting progressively shorter, but she still loved them. She would bounce around and run to the door. When I took our younger dogs on a walk she’s eagerly waiting watching in the window for us to get back and her turn. She would almost trample everything in her way out the door and down the driveway. Even on that last walk together.
As her hips gave out we were just across the street from our house. We do live on a hill so as we stopped to let her rest I told her she just had to make it across the street and up the driveway and she’d be home. When we got to the porch I picked her up and carried her up the stairs. When I set her down she collapsed and was gone. It was so fast. She moaned and everything released before there was anything I could do.
I feel so guilty. I feel like I failed her. She was quite old, we think 11 or 12. I rescued her 6 years ago. She was a Doberman with poor teeth, hips & covered in lipomas and cysts. I wish I had more time. I wish I had done more for her.
She was my true soul mate, even my husband agrees. She was at my engagement, bridal shower, bachelorette weekend, walked me down the aisle and attended our honeymoon & engagement trips. I bought our house with her hips in mind (no stairs and carpets so she wouldn’t slide on hardwoods). I quit my job that kept me away from the house 12-13 hours a day for one that I could take her everyday to the office and then to work from home. When we had our first child she was the one who would sit up at night with me in the nursery.
I feel like I’ve genuinely lost a piece of my self. I just want her back so badly. I want to know all of our lasts were our lasts.
I know in so many ways it’s a blessing she went quickly, at home and wasn’t sick, suffering or scared at the vet. But 6 years just wasn’t enough time.

2024.05.16 22:33 sackout It’s Over

Getting fired from the best job I’ve had all because gm doesn’t like my attitude.
Always wanted to know how to cook so instead of going to college I started cooking (regret this now). Started from fast food and worked my way up restaurants in my town till I got hired at the nicest place I’ve worked.
Was my 1st time have an executive chef, wearing a chef coat, brand new kitchen, great coworkers. Was amazing. Slowly went down hill, cracks started to appear, the chef was overworked and over stressed, some co workers turned against me etc, normal stuff.
Then the chef got fired, bunch of crew left, got a new chef and gm and new cooks.lot of things got scaled back since we were “too ambitious” and it turned almost into the same corporate kitchen I’ve spent a few years working in.
Anyways, that gm got fired after a month because the front of house didn’t like him and came up with some reason. New gm incoming.
She’s here, in her 1st week she got rid of bad employees and already did more than the last gm did in a month. Slowly start to realize she wants all her employees to be yesmen, I’m not that so I try to avoid talking to her and she seems to do the same. She has a lot of input for the kitchen despite not really knowing how to cook. (For example she asked me what gravy we make, told her how we make our pepper gravy without saying the words pepper gravy, she responded with we should replace it with pepper gravy.)
She also starts running expo but she really can’t keep up unless u hand her every plate in order and tell her which plate is which after they’re in the window (she kinda just hands servers plates)
Anyways the office has thin walls and I overhead them discussing firing me. My chef was saying they have to wait for me to be late, (I’ve been late 4 times in one year of working there, they just happen to be in the last 2 months.) but she kept mentioning how she can’t handle my attitude. I genuinely don’t try to give her one, but I’m the type of person that ask why after someone tells me something. I’ve heard it’s common in autistic individuals, which I am, and I do it purely because I wish to know the reasoning of basically everything, it’s just how I learn.
Anyways I’m kinda just ranting, if I show up tomorrow and I’m not fired, I honestly might try to piss her off and get fired to get unemployment ment while I find a new career.
Anyways, cheers!

2024.05.16 22:11 Sea-Apartment1436 Should I tell My(23) Job About My Felonious Assault

To start this off, I am not a felon. My case has been dismissed but after applying to be an Ubereats driver I saw that it is still in my background check.
About a year ago, I went wit some “friends” to get their car back from one of their sisters. One of the friends was someone I had fallen in love with previously and the other friend was her girlfriend. I was down bad but that version of me would’ve never let anything happen to her.
We pull up to the sisters house and me and the girlfriend get out the car. Because the sister didn’t want to see the other girl, so she waited in the car. The sister came out with a whole group of people and started talking about gas, I said they didn’t owe them anything.
They all walked up on me and I backed up all the way to my car. I sprayed pepper spray to get them all to back up, it didn’t work. (The sister sprayed me with pepper spray as well). Me and the sister started fighting, she got on top of me, and I bit her. Someone pulled her away and then 3-4 of the girls started jumping me.
After a little while, my “friend” jumped out the car and the alarms started blaring. The other friend tossed me my keys and we got in the car. I wouldn’t leave because I didn’t have my phone, they stole it. The police arrived and arrested me for felonious assault for the pepper spray and made me look like the aggressor.
Got out of jail a day before my birthday. My case got dismissed but it’s still on my record. I have a new job and they said the background checks are taking a minute. They said they usually do but I feel like they might find it and I would be very upset if they chose not to work with me because of that.
I know where I went wrong in the situation, I shouldn’t have even been there. Should I talk to them ahead of time in case they find something? Or should I be quiet for now and say something if they address me about it?

2024.05.16 21:54 SleepyGary8 Moving to area

My family and I are moving to the area later this year as my husband got a job with Walmart. I was hoping for some suggestions on areas that would be 30 mins or less commute from the home office. Our budget is under 400k. I would really like to find a home where I can have a few backyard hens as well. We really love Bella Vista (quiet, lots of trees and hills) but the commute sounds bad and the prices are going way up since we started looking a few months ago and I'm not sure we will be able to afford it once it's time to buy. Also interested in Centerton and Pea Ridge. Any help would be lovely!

My high school job was working at the CVS in small town East Bumblebutt*, and my absolute favorite aisle was the one with all of the pipe tobaccos. Every night as I faced the store, I found reasons to linger amongst the various bags and secretly sniff them. It always disappointed me that they smelled completely differently when smoked by my geography teacher outside during lunch breaks!
Teenage Smells PG is having her moment today with Or du Serail by Naomi Goodsir. A light dab opens with a sweet apple (barely fruit and closer to blossom), moderate amounts of honey that is not cloying, a touch of rum and a hint of tobacco. Within 30 minutes the fragrance blooms to reveal a soft flower and the tiniest hint of coconut, as the tobacco deepens. After 2 hours, it's full on sweet pipe tobacco, and I'm in heaven. After 8 hours, I can still catch a whiff when I raise my arm to run my hands through my hair.
This is the fragrance you

The Black Keys (description in the post) Genre: blues rock, garage rock, indie rock, Lo-Fi
Let's get to know The Black Keys band a little bit.
I first heard this band when I was about 16 years old in the song Lo/Hi. The mix of garage rock and blues struck me and made me check out the other tracks of this band. That's how I fell in love. I listened non-stop to their albums and couldn't understand how such a simple rhythm and lightness made me shake my head. The band is incredibly driven. A little bit about the creation of the band and biography..
The Black Keys are an American rock duo formed in Akron, Ohio in 2001. The group consists of Dan Auerbach (guitar, vocals) and Patrick Carney (drums). The duo began as an independent act, recording music in basements and self-producing their records, before they eventually emerged as one of the most popular garage rock artists during a second wave of the genre's revival in the 2000s. The band's raw blues rock sound draws heavily from Auerbach's blues influences, including Junior Kimbrough, R.L. Burnside, Howlin' Wolf, and Robert Johnson.
Friends since childhood, Auerbach and Carney founded the group after dropping out of college. After signing with indie label Alive, they released their debut album, The Big Come Up (2002), which earned them a new deal with Fat Possum Records. Over the next decade, the Black Keys built an underground fanbase through extensive touring of small clubs, frequent album releases and music festival appearances, and broad licensing of their songs. Their third album, Rubber Factory (2004), received critical acclaim and boosted the band's profile, eventually leading to a record deal with major label Nonesuch Records in 2006. After self-producing and recording their first four records in makeshift studios, the duo completed Attack & Release (2008) in a professional studio and hired producer Danger Mouse, who subsequently became a frequent collaborator with the band.
The group's commercial breakthrough came in 2010 with Brothers, which along with its popular single "Tighten Up", won three Grammy Awards. Their 2011 follow-up El Camino received strong reviews and peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 chart, leading to the first arena concert tour of the band's career, the El Camino Tour. The album and its hit single "Lonely Boy" won three Grammy Awards. In 2014, they released their eighth album, Turn Blue, their first number-one record in the US, Canada, and Australia. After completing the Turn Blue Tour in 2015, the duo took a hiatus for several years to work on side projects and produce other artists. They returned in 2019 with their ninth album, Let's Rock. They have since released three additional studio albums: Delta Kream (2021), consisting of hill country blues covers; Dropout Boogie (2022); and Ohio Players (2024).
Guitarist and vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney first met when they were eight or nine years old while living in the same neighborhood of Akron, Ohio a couple houses down from each other. Auerbach and Carney both come from musical backgrounds. Auerbach is the cousin of guitarist Robert Quine, a "veteran of New York's avant-rock scene." Carney is the nephew of saxophonist Ralph Carney, who performed on several Tom Waits albums. While attending Firestone High School, they became friends, though they were part of different crowds —Auerbach was captain of the high school soccer team, while Carney was a social outcast. Encouraged by their brothers, the duo began jamming together in 1996, as Auerbach was learning guitar at the time and Carney owned a four-track recorder and a drum set. After graduating, both briefly attended the University of Akron before dropping out.
According to an interview on NPR's Fresh Air, the group's name "the Black Keys" came from an acquaintance diagnosed with schizophrenia, Alfred McMoore. He would leave incoherent messages on their answering machines referring to their fathers as "black keys" such as "D flat" when he was upset with them.On March 20, 2002, the duo played their first live show at Cleveland's Beachland Ballroom and Tavern to an audience of approximately eight people. The band's debut album, The Big Come Up, was recorded entirely in Carney's basement on an 8-track tape recorder in lo-fi and was released in May 2002, three months after they signed to Alive. The album, a mix of eight original tracks and five cover songs, forged a raw blues rock sound for the group; the covers included tracks originally by blues musicians Muddy Waters, Junior Kimbrough, and R. L. Burnside. Two tracks, covers of the traditional blues standard "Leavin' Trunk" and the Beatles' song "She Said, She Said", were released as a single on Isota Records. The track "I'll Be Your Man" would later be used as the theme song for the HBO series Hung. In order to help fund a tour, Auerbach and Carney took jobs mowing lawns for a landlord. Despite modest sales for The Big Come Up, it gained a cult following and attracted attention from critics, eventually landing the group a record deal with Fat Possum Records.

2024.05.16 20:48 onemerrylilac [5E] [Online] Lost Mine of Phandelver

Hi everyone!
I have a group of 3 together running through Lost Mine of Phandelver. We had a fourth, but due to scheduling conflicts, they've had to drop out of the campaign. I'm looking for a fourth person to round out our party.
The pitch from when the campaign started is below. I think it still gives a good idea of how the campaign is going, but first, a few minor details about the game:
  1. Sessions are done weekly on Monday nights, 7:00PM to ~10:00PM Eastern Standard Time.
  2. Aside from limited modifications and custom game elements, the campaign only uses the core rules from the Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master's Guide. Players create their characters by choosing from a limited list of races, backgrounds, and classes specifically chosen as suitable for the game.
  3. Roll20 and Discord will be necessary to play, but no paid licenses are required. Roll20 will be used as virtual tabletop only, with dice rolls and character sheets done separately.
The Pitch:
Over five hundred years ago, clans of dwarves and gnomes made an agreement known as the Phandelver’s Pact, by which they would share a rich mine in a wondrous cavern known as Wave Echo Cave. In addition to its mineral wealth, the mine was said to contain great magical power. Human spellcasters allied themselves with the dwarves and gnomes to channel and bind that energy to craft magical artifacts. Times were good, and the nearby town of Phandalin prospered as well. But then disaster struck when orcs swept through the North and laid waste to all in their path. Humans, dwarves, and gnomes fought alongside each other to defend the mine, but little remains of the wonders created by the Pact, with the location of Wave Echo Cave lost to time.
Much of the Sword Coast has been abandoned for centuries and nature has colonized what the mortal races left behind all those years ago. Packs of wolves and owlbears roam the wilderness. Goblin tribes set devious traps along the road for unsuspecting travelers, while orcs wait in ambush among the hills. Ancient ruins dot the landscape, but while so little remains of those bygone eras, sometimes the past refuses to die. Undead ghouls stalk the plains for food, never able to quell their hunger for mortal flesh. These lands are dangerous even for up-and-coming adventurers, and yet still there are grander schemes afoot.
Four misfits, down on their luck and unfulfilled by their lives, set out for the frontier seeking a fresh start. A dwarven archaeologist and explorer named Gundren Rockseeker needed them to escort a wagon full of supplies to Phandalin. A bustling settlement has sprung up around the old site, attracting all kinds of opportunists, and Gundren seems to be one of them.
Unfortunately, whatever exploits Gundren may be looking for, he’s crossed paths with someone dangerous. Only half a day into their journey, the rookie adventurers’ first job turned south when they found their employer’s horse dead in the middle of the road. Someone else covets the wonders that lie buried in the Phandelver ruins, and they’ll stop at nothing to have them.
Growls in the dark. Tremors in the ground. A monster emerges. Do you have what it takes?
If this sounds like the kind of game you're interested in, fill out this quick survey and you'll be considered as a prospective player. Thank you!

2024.05.16 20:03 wroseto12 Pine Creek Trip Report - 5/13-5/14 2024 - Ansonia to Slate Run

If anyone is interested - I wrote a trip report from a recent trip a buddy and I did earlier this week. I highly recommend this trip if you’re in the area, it was well worth the 4 hour drive for us.
A co-worker and I from an outfitter down in Southeast PA decided to plan a trip to Ansonia, PA to Paddle Pine Creek. We planned the trip mostly out of the Keystone Canoeing book by Edward Gertler and information on the PA DCNR website. We originally planned to do a 2 night, 3 day trip. Pine Creek runs through a beautiful section of PA’s Grand Canyon, and is known for its beautiful views, good water, and amazing trout fishing. We met at our local outfitter at 6am to pick up our boats and get in the same car. By 6:30 we had our boats strapped down and our gear loaded and we hit the road. We stopped at wawa for sizzlis, energy drinks, nerd gummy clusters, and jolly ranchers which would serve as our road trip sustenance (we decided to eat super healthy this trip ;)). We had a 4 hour drive ahead of us which actually took a little bit longer since we stopped about halfway through for gas and a shit break. Aphex twin was the soundtrack of this road trip. At about 11am we rolled into the parking lot of Pine Creek Outfitters (PCO). Inside we were met with very helpful and knowledgeable staff, we also purchased a map there which ended up being super helpful as the maps we had from Keystone Canoeing weren't quite as detailed. The employees at PCO said the creek is pretty self explanatory but there's only one section we should be worried about which was Owassee rapid, they told us to just keep left and hug the bank. PCO directed us to a public canoe access no more than a quarter mile down the road where we would start our trip. We were on the water by noon and the views were not great at this point, as there was a large overcast and we were not quite in the depths of the . We had a quick flat paddle for about a mile or two until the water got going, and at about 12:30 we stopped to check the map. At this point we knew Owassee was coming up and we wanted to make sure we weren't surprised by it. The map noted that Owassee was preceded by a cabin with notable arches which we passed probably around 12:45. We pulled off towards the right side of the island at Owassee as PCO noted that the left side is known to have some killer strainers. We scouted Owassee for the next 15 minutes or so and crapped our pants. We were super nervous, this was the biggest water that either of us had run in a canoe before, let alone with all of our camping gear in our boat. The most daunting section of Owassee was a set of massive boulders to the right side of the channel which all of the water pushes you towards. Immediately following Owassee is a massive set of wave trains that I would (totally unprofessionally) eyeball to be 3-4 foot standing waves. Immediately preceding Owassee are a couple of flat boulders which are hard to see from the water so we were happy to scout and get a good look at it. I’d guess that at this water level Owassee was easily a Class 2+ or 3. We decided to take a line which stayed left pretty much the entire way until the big wave trains following Owassee where we could cut over to the right. At this point we headed back up to our boats to run it. It was a little sketchy, but not as bad as we thought it would be, a couple back paddles and keeping your bow pointed toward the island and you will be okay. The wave trains following Owassee were a little hectic, and we ended up taking on some water, especially me in my Heavy Old Town Discovery 168. We pulled off to the right after the Wave Trains to bail our boats and have a celebratory Miller Lite and Croissant (godly combo). We were in front of this awesome cabin called “Tiadaghton Lodge”, the cabin had a sweet foot bridge that crossed the river to allow for access to the cabin from the rail trail. At this point the sun had come out and we were officially in the heart of the PA Grand Canyon, the views were spectacular and it was just an overall phenomenal day outside. Once we were back on the water, we were super pleased with the flow. It was consistent Class 1’s with sprinkled Class 2’s pretty much for the rest of the day, it was a super enjoyable paddle and a pleasant challenge from the barely Class 1 water we were used to. We were now in the heart of the canyon and the views were just breathtaking, the vast canyon extending on either side of the creek really makes you feel small, and it was insane to think that this wildly different terrain was still in PA. The canyon was lined with awesome waterfalls that were really pleasing to see and hear along the way. Around probably 2 or 3 we stopped for a bathroom break and lunch. Up to this point we had only seen about 4 other people and none of them were on the river, 2 were riding horses and the rest were just hikers along the rail trail. By around 4pm we took a smaller channell to the right side of an island which turned out to be a good choice as we found an awesome little campsite here. We finished up clocking about 10 miles that day. There were two fire rings and a weird but cool table made by balancing a rock on top of a cut down tree stump, pretty cool. We spent the next hour or so setting up camp and then we relaxed in our hammocks until around 6 when we decided to make a fire and get dinner started. We struggled with starting a fire because of the rain that morning and the day before, but we got it started just enough to cook our food. I made Bombay Potatoes with Rice and some canned chicken and Owen (My coworker) made turkey sausages and canned tamales. We also made some warm fresh bread with some dough I had made when we got to camp. After eating we went into a food coma for a little until we decided to really make the fire big. We got it going probably for about an hour when we finished off all the miller lites we had brought. At this point we went to bed. I slept super well and was definitely warm enough despite only having a 50 degree bag, which is something I was worried about. I’m used to hammock camping, so having a tent was a super nice luxury to have. We woke up at about 7 or 8 am and took our morning nice and easy. We had planned to do an easy 15 miles this day and camp out at a campground in Cedar Run where we would try and figure out a ride back to our car. We took it easy, and ate instant oatmeal, scrambled eggs, and bacon spam along with instant coffee. It was an awesome breakfast although I could almost feel the heart attack from the spam. I definitely recommend Starbucks Via instant blonde roast for anyone looking for a good camping coffee option. I've been loving it so far, especially given that it's instant coffee. After breakfast we chilled in our hammocks by the water for about 15 minutes before we packed up camp and were back on the water by 10am. It was another beautiful day, atleast to start and the views were still just as stellar in the heart of the gorge. We had another nice stretch of river to start. We passed an awesome waterfall which I can’t remember the name of almost right after we left camp. We pulled over at about 11am to pee, make coffee and filter some more water. We pulled off next to this awesome waterfall that I used to wash some of my dishes from earlier and collect water that I could filter later on. We paddled for another 30 minutes or so until we saw a bald eagle chilling in a tree overhanging the creek. We stopped paddling and took out our phones to get some awesome videos of it. The eagle took off and flew around us and then up river with the crows in tail. It was an awesome experience. At this point the water chilled out for the most part, besides one more notable rapid called thread the needle, it was a super fun little bend and reminded me of a rapid back home. About an hour after this, the overcast came back and the wind really started to pick up. At this point the grand views from the gorge really seem to chill out as we started to enter civilization again. We passed the town of Blackwell and a nice little campground on our left side, there was a nice little canoe access there with some people hanging out and fishing. This would have been a good spot to end the trip if you just wanted to see the gorge. After Blackwell we passed Rattlesnake Rock where we saw some Mennonites hanging out and we asked them for some of the lore on the rock. They said that it was named by loggers back in the day when they found a ton of Rattlesnakes on it. The rest of the way was pretty mediocre water and we really ended up fighting the wind. We also passed a kayaker here who said that slate run (where we planned to get out) was only about an hour away. He ended up being wrong as it was about two hours but we paddled on, deciding to end the trip a day early and drive home that night. There were two more notable rapids before getting to slate run, one which must've been a Class 3 was notable due to the MASSIVE wave trains and a huge boulder hidden behind a standing wave, it must’ve been 4 foot standing waves we paddled through. The second was right before slate run, right next to a campground. Massive wave trains which swept you towards these massive undercut rocks which were super sketchy. These rapids were fairly easy to navigate as you can kind of avoid them altogether and were most likely larger than usual due to the rain the days before. We pulled into Slate Run at about 2pm. A local informed us that Slate Run is one of the best spots for trout fishing in the entire country, there was even a hotel basically just for trout fishermen across the creek from the We had no plan for a ride back to our care so we talked to some people at the Slate Run access asking for a ride. We also went up to the general store to ask some employees there. We got ice cream which was fantastic and then called PCO for a ride back. They weren't too happy with us as they usually require a reservation for their shuttle service and were getting ready to head home for the day, but they nonetheless gave us a ride. We made some coffee and instant ramen while waiting for the shuttle to arrive. Our shuttle driver was super nice and helpful and even took us the long way back to show us this cute little town of Wellsboro. She even offered us jobs in exchange for cheap NRS gear after seeing how easily we threw our boats around. She also showed us the way to get to an awesome lookout over the whole canyon. Overall I highly recommend PCO for any trips and if we ever come back will definitely be using them again, awesome people. After getting the car and boats loaded up, we headed up the canyon to checkout the canyon from the top. It was breathtaking, and a super cool and different perspective from what we saw from the water. After leaving the overlook we headed home. Stopping at Mcdonalds for some food along the way, and we rolled into the parking lot at about 11pm. Overall this was an awesome trip and highly recommended for anyone looking for awesome water, amazing views, or great camping. We will definitely be coming back.

2024.05.16 19:31 GayleGribble What’s your job like?

I have a 2 yr degree in horticulture, a 6 mo internship at a research farm, 4 years at a nursery as a growe supervisor at a decent sized nursery and only made $17/hr, and applied for another grower position but was told the position was actually a shipping position, and someone would have to quit to get another position. I took the job, slightly better pay and benefits but still only $20. My last job offered to match which still felt underpaid. I already asked for more at the new place because it’s extremely physical and was told they only do raises once a year. Feel like I’m being taken advantage of. And now the manager is interviewing for a grower position yet never mentioned to me that was open. Thinking of changing careers. It’s not so much the pay- we have 4 visa workers who work production in a shaded barn all day sitting down. And I’m the only person outside pushing carts up a hill which weigh three times more than I do.

2024.05.16 18:59 CountyBubbly6896 Sticky situation with my (30/f) wife (31/f)- am I not being more considerate or supportive?

P.S This post was recently in AITA, which I then had to repost here
Backstory, my wife and I moved up north in order to have a lower cost of living and for her to be able to start a business. Before we moved I mentioned that I would support her once we moved so she can get the business up and running.
We are now 9 months into living up North, she has her business that is doing pretty well. I helped her look for a location and helped her put 2 grand in for whatever she needed to get started.
In January, she decided that she couldn’t fully focus on the business and work PT, again I was supportive.
Since January, I have been supporting us financially. All of our bills, household needs, gas, and food, plus our dog. It has been taking a toll of me mentally. I work 2 jobs (looking for a 3rd) and go to school full time.
I brought this up to my wife and she got upset with me because she feels like I’m not supporting her as she is trying to get the business going. I know it takes time to for it but I am struggling with keeping us afloat. She feels that if our basic needs are met that we are good.
My wife the told me that “I don’t trust you. I mad at myself for trusting you. For trusting in someone who doesn’t support me. I feel like I am the only person who can give myself stability. As soon as I met you and trusted you, everything went down hill”. She thinks that because I have a more high paying job (vs what I had before) that I am better than her.
I do support my wife. I always have been supportive. I even moved away from all my family in order for her to start this business. I feel like I’m being punished for asking for help. We are now taking a separation (still living together). This mixed in with other arguments is making me emotionally and mentally exhausted to the point where I’m rethinking everything.
Is there something I’m missing or not taking into consideration from her part?

2024.05.16 18:45 Ornery-Swordfish-392 Would you treat a patient for ADHD, with a stimulant and sleep aid, who has symptoms more indicative of narcolepsy?

I have been trying to take an mslt/ psg for a year now, but cannot “pass” the psg, by sleeping the required 6 hours- I have horrible insomnia when unmedicated (despite doing 3 months of a CBT-I program, following strict lifestyle changes and sleep hygiene). I definitely think I have narcolepsy, but I am not able to get that diagnosis because I cannot successfully complete the psg overnight sleep study. I did take an at-home overnight sleep study and sleep apnea was ruled out. Since the treatments for narcolepsy and ADHD are similar, I am wondering if I should be more focused on being treated for ADHD. I was on vyvanse for 10 years, which very successfully treated my excessive daytime sleepiness, I have been off of it for over a year now, and also have been off ambien for 6 months (used for 20 years). I have an ADHD diagnosis in MyChart (not a full diagnosis through an evaluation, I was diagnosed as a child, I think I still struggle with it, but do feel like my symptoms are more due to narcolepsy). My previous psychiatrist who prescribed me vyvanse has now retired. I had a spinal injury and have been taking baclofen and have found it quite effective in treating my insomnia, but it is prescribed through my neurosurgeon and he is tapering me off. I’ve had the lumbar puncture to test for narcolepsy, but I do not have low Orexin levels. I feel like sleep doctors won’t help me unless I meet their strict criteria for narcolepsy through the psg/ mslt. I have really tried to get that diagnosis, or at least learn more about my sleep because I do feel like that is at the root of my problems. I’m a high functioning person, but this last year going off my meds I can barely function because I am so tired. I have had depression in the past, but really have so much going for me in my life, and I 100% know I am not depressed (but fighting tiredness everyday is starting to make me depressed). I started seeing my current/ new psychiatrist to help me taper off the vyvanse and ambien, but she is firm that I have a sleep disorder and won’t treat my ADHD. So, I have appointments with two new psychiatrists and I’m just wondering if they may treat my adhd, or if in general they will want the sleep disorder diagnosed first. I know each doctor is different. Just thought I would throw this out there. Maybe I should be presenting my ADHD symptoms as the main concern, I know ADHD can also cause daytime sleepiness, so maybe that is what I’m dealing with. The doctors I have come in contact with seem very against prescribing stimulants. I don’t use drugs or even drink. I always took a very low dose. My PCP has prescribed me Modafinil in the past, but it did nothing for me. I also have a head injury, which made my insomnia and EDS much worse. I’ve also tried bupropion, but it makes my anxiety increase too much. I’ve had many, many blood tests, and am treating my low vitamin D. I even was tested for MS when I got my lumbar puncture. I know I may seem drug seeking, but contrary to that, I just know what has worked for me in the past and my quality of life has gone down hill, I’m a single parent and struggle to take care of my son, luckily my job is very flexible and I can generally WFH, if I had a normal job, I don’t think I would be able to keep it. I can’t explain how much I am struggling and this tiredness is hurting my life- I’m highly educated, a professional, very high up in my field, normally extremely active, but this past year since going off my meds I can barely function, all I want to do is sleep. Any thoughts or recommendations I am open to.

2024.05.16 18:32 nemmoph Husband Wanted.

I’m aware that this is unconventional. Believe me, I’ve tried conventional – it didn’t end well for anyone. I require a certain open mindedness that I’m hoping I might find here, but more importantly, I need my future husband to know the rules. Meet-cutes are well and good on the screen, but they don’t guarantee a partner’s ability to follow basic instructions. That was my mistake the first time.
So, begging your pardon for my bluntness, I’m going to be clear about my requirements. Please read carefully – if you can’t meet them, there’s no point in going any further.
This is the part where I should talk about myself, but let’s face it, this is hardly a romantic proposal. I require commitment up-front and there’s no guarantee that, once we do meet, we’ll really even like each other. If we do? Fantastic! It’ll help the years fly by. If we don’t, you’ll still have the main prize – years of rent-free, expenses-free living at The Old Oak Hotel.
A sanctuary has stood in this spot in one form or another since before the ley lines. During its tenure, it has been flooded, put to the flame, and pounded into dust. Time and again, it has been reimagined and rebuilt. Most of the current building dates back to Victoria’s reign, though the oldest parts were constructed in the 13th century. At the very bottom of the garden, cut into the surrounding hills, there is a cave bearing handprints of red ochre.
There has always been an Edwards at the hotel, though of course we haven’t always gone by that name. You would think a family so tied to one place would do a better job of keeping records, but no one is certain of our origins. Perhaps it was a cosmic bargain, or perhaps mere luck – whether good or bad, I have never been able to decide. Either way, our presence is required. Throughout our spotty past, there’s a story here and there of an Edwards deserting their post, and it always coincides with a particularly brutal period of history.
I inherited the position five years ago. At midnight on my eighteenth birthday, my parents took their already-packed suitcases and left. I don’t blame them for their abandonment; I intend to one day do the same thing to my – or, hopefully, our – child.
They send me postcards and photos from time-to-time, always smiling on sunny beaches. Money isn’t a concern for them. That’s part of whatever mysterious deal our ancestors made – when a caretaker leaves in good-standing, they will never want for anything again. They could travel the world for the rest of their lives, always sleeping in the softest sheets and dining in the finest restaurants, and never find their pockets empty.
Keep this point in mind, for if you can meet my requirements, you will share my good fortune.
And what must we do in return? I can all but hear you scream the question. Why, very little. The presence of an Edwards ensures that the guests can’t stray from the hotel grounds. Most of our guests are live-in residents, though we do get the occasional walk-in. Where they come from, I don’t know, for we are not visible to most people who stumble upon our lonely corner of the world. I’ve come to believe the hotel chooses to reveal itself when its lacking entertainment, or to fill a need.
Jimmy, my first husband, was one such guest.
For the most part, the guests are harmless. They’ll give you a little fright from time-to-time, popping out from a wall or turning your bathwater into blood, but I find it hard to hold it against them. I’ve found twenty-three years here dreary; I can’t imagine how bored I would be after five hundred.
There are a few exceptions you should be aware of:
Guests aside, there are other rules you will need to follow to ensure a safe, satisfactory stay at The Old Oak Hotel. They are listed in a book that has been re-penned many times over the centuries. If you choose to accept this opportunity, I will insist that you read it until you can recite the pages word-for-word.
However, there are some rules so critical for your survival that I feel compelled to list them here:
Failure to observe that last rule is what got Jimmy.
She doted on him. I think he reminded her of her long-dead son, for she pampered him as if he were one of her own. Each morning, she had breakfast ready for him before I had so much as opened my eyes, and she developed a habit of trailing along after him, complimenting his skill as he oiled rusted hinges or set a crooked picture straight.
At first, Jimmy basked in the attention. But by the end of his second month, he was growing bored of Mrs Jones, me, and the hotel itself. We pride ourselves on our facilities. If you need more activity than a turn around the garden, we have a lovely indoor pool – it freezes over every now and then, but most of the time it’s perfectly usable. Our library is unmatched. Although the room is cramped, it has every book imaginable; you only need to think of a particular title, and it will appear on one of the shelves. And now that I’ve dragged us kicking and screaming into the 21st century, we have a wide array of streaming services.
It wasn’t enough for Jimmy. He wanted to go out – eat in a restaurant, watch a film in the cinema, see any faces other than the ones he was surrounded by every day. He began having a drink each evening. One drink turned into several, and after a few weeks, the bar became his permanent residence between dusk and midnight.
He wasn’t the only one getting bored. I had been thrilled when he first arrived; ecstatic when he agreed to stay. How marvellous to feel real flesh beneath my fingers after five years of only the dead for company. What a relief to have some assistance in the many tasks required to keep the hotel running as it should.
The more he drank, the less inclined he was to help – or even spend time in my company. He no longer visited my bed, choosing a room for himself on the opposite end of the floor. When our paths did cross, at best he would ignore me. At worst, he would nitpick or outright rail against me, blaming me for his captivity.
Still, I made an effort to be present whenever he frequented the bar. As lovely as Mrs Jones can be, she does have a tendency to nag. Before and after her death, she was close to teetotal, only consenting to take a single sherry at Christmas, and drinking outside of special occasions is something of a bugbear of hers.
“Think of your health, dear,” she would tell Jimmy brusquely. “You’ll miss it when it’s gone.”
Or, “How about we switch to a nice apple juice now? You’ve had quite enough to drink for one night.”
Most of the time, Jimmy managed to pull himself together enough to flash a charming smile and distract her with a compliment about her latest meal. But after one drink too many, I’d noticed him gritting his teeth and just barely managing to hold his tongue.
It was better if I was present. Playing the doting wife, I insisted on pouring his drinks, watering them down out of his sight. When Mrs Jones’s nagging bordered on relentless, I could always distract her with a game of gin rummy.
On his final day, I was running behind. The ghoul on the second floor – usually the least demanding of our guests – had come down with some dreadful illness, or else decided he wanted to inconvenience me. Either way, I had woken that morning to the foulest stench I had ever experienced. I followed it to his room and found every surface covered in putrid green-blank gunge, its consistency somewhere between mucus and vomit.
All day I scrubbed, taking only brief breaks to step outside before I fainted. By the time the room was restored to a passable state, and I had filled several bin bags to bursting with filthy rags, it was already deep into the night. Mindful of the time, I paused only long enough to wash the streaks of muck from my arms and face before racing to the bar.
I arrived just in time to hear Jimmy’s last words. After he spat them at Mrs Jones, she only stared for a small eternity, her mouth frozen in the motherly smile she wore whenever she scolded him.
Then, like melted wax, her face began to shift.
I shouted at Jimmy to run, but he didn’t need to be told. Before the words left my mouth, he leapt from his barstool and streaked through the door. Mrs Jones followed him seconds later. Her lips were already peeling back to reveal rows upon rows of long, wickedly sharp fangs, while claws sprouted from beneath her lace-edged cuffs.
I sprinted after them, but Jimmy was fuelled by fear and Mrs Jones by whatever force propels the Mrs Joneses of the world. I followed the screeching to the lobby. Breathless, I arrived to see he had arrived within mere feet of the entrance before Mrs Jones grabbed him.
Claws wrapped around his throat, she lifted him into the air. As I watched, her jaw unhinged, the lower part dropping so that it was nearly level with her chest.
That sight drove all the sense out of my head. Forgetting every rule my parents had ever drilled into me, I lunged at her.
She batted me away as though I weighed no more than a fly.
I crashed into the reception desk, the breath bursting from my lungs in a great woosh. I was certain that I would die, for no amount of effort seemed to force air back into my aching chest. At last, as my vision began to dim, I managed to take a small gulp – then another, and another, until I was able to draw myself together enough to regain my feet.
By that time, Mrs Jones had nearly finished her dinner. Jimmy’s chest was splayed open, muscle and shattered ribs protruding every which way from his flesh, and she was devouring the last few bites of his heart.
His head was angled towards me. The light had winked out from his eyes, but they still held his final terror – and an accusation which, I was quite certain, was directed at me. I would like to say I felt only horror, but I couldn’t help my sudden jolt of irritation. How may times had I told him to mind his manners?
Mrs Jones gulped, the sound thick and wet in her gullet, and dropped what remained of Jimmy to the floor.
Then she turned to me.
Here’s another rule for you, one which I hope you never have cause to use: never interfere with a kill.
The Mrs Jones who used to kiss my grazed knees, who argued with my mother for the right to read me bedtime stories, was no longer at the wheel. No amount of pleading or reasoning would move her.
I could only run.
Spinning around, I vaulted over the reception desk and raced for the office behind it. If Jimmy had not been out of his mind with fear and booze, he might have remembered the rules and survived; it was one of several staff-only rooms throughout the hotel warded to keep out unwanted guests.
Just ten steps from desk to door, yet it was the longest journey of my life. My hard-won breath burned my throat; my heart pounded in my ears, deafening me to all other sounds than Mrs Jones’s heavy, pounding footsteps.
Grasping the handle, her hot, copper-tanged breath was on my neck. Fire exploded in my flesh as she raked her claws down my back. A step further away, and I wouldn’t have made it; the pain would have been too great. But I managed to throw myself into the office and slam the door before crumpling to the ground.
Before I passed out, I heard her grunting and shrieking outside, furious that she couldn’t get in.
Three days I spent in the office, emerging only to feed The Thing in the Cellar before scurrying back to my hiding place. Whenever I left, I tried not to look at the mangled heap that used to be Jimmy. There was no avoiding the smell, though.
With no small difficulty, and the help of a first aid kit, I managed to treat and bandage the wounds on my back. They bled sluggishly all throughout the first day, but thankfully didn’t fester.
On the morning of the fourth day, there was a tentative knock on the door followed by the sound of rapidly retreating footsteps. I waited until they had disappeared down the corridor before cracking the door open. On the floor was a freshly baked Victoria sponge and a beautifully written note of apology.
It took every ounce of courage I possessed, but that evening I forced myself to go to the dining room. Mrs Jones was waiting for me, her eyes red-rimmed, a steaming cottage pie on the table. I tried not to flinch as she took my hand, re-iterating the apology she had already delivered in writing.
The next morning, she helped me clean Jimmy up.
We treated each other cautiously for a while, but eventually we got back to playing gin rummy again. When the scars on my back twinge, as they sometimes do, she helps me rub a soothing ointment into them. Even though I’ve told her it’s not necessary, she apologises every time.
So, you’ve heard my story and you have my proposal. If you think you could be the man for me, I invite you to visit. You will need to drink a cup of ram’s blood (a pinch of nutmeg makes it a little more tolerable) and light a black candle before bedtime. When you next wake, you will find yourself at our gates. As travel arrangements go, it’s hardly the Orient Express, but it beats the airfare.
If you have read this without flinching, if you can stomach the journey to get here, if you walk up to our door and find the nerve to open it, I have one more instruction for you.
Just as you enter, look to your right. You will see a deep brown stain on the lobby carpet. I’ve scrubbed and scrubbed but it just won’t come out. Perhaps that’s for the best. It’s a good reminder of what will happen to you should you call Mrs Jones a “nosy old bat”.
And when you run into Jimmy – as you will, for he still likes hanging around the bar in the evening, his silvery wounds glistening as though they had just been inflicted – don’t let him convince you he was some sort of victim.
He knew the rules.

2024.05.16 17:40 sheistheone71 Loosing someone I never even had

We matched on Bumble in October of 2023; it was a great time in my life. Things were finally looking up, we matched, and we chatted, but it was not a good time in your life. You were taken by work, no time for dating and definitely no time for me. SO, the conversation fizzled, and we stopped chatting, having never met.
Life got in the way, and I moved 6 hours away, I was starting over, talking to other guys and mercury was indeed in the microwave. Then I woke up to your text, “hey” you said I replied with “a blast from the past”. You told me you’ve been thinking of me, I even appeared in your dream. Over and over, I said “this is a bad idea, and this won’t work” you convinced me otherwise. I was the fool who fell for your game. Every time I said distance was hard and required effort, you said you’d put in the effort. You called me, messaged me every morning, wished me goodnight. I was quickly falling, not in love, but definitely in like. You were interested in me; you admired my work ethic and you wanted to get to know me. You had even changed jobs so you would have more time.
Then, you took a 12 hour round trip train to come see me, name one girl that wouldn’t be in awe of that, bet you can’t. You came to visit me, spent the weekend, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, three days of pure bliss filled with fun, laughter, and sexy time. I don’t regret any of it, it was an amazing weekend even though that was the beginning and the end. We went out, we had good food, we got to know each other better. You shared childhood stories, and I did the same, you bought me a rose and a hat (that I will keep because it’s actually great) needless to say it was super-duper romantic.
I dropped you off at the station, you kissed me and said, “see you soon”. AGAIN, name one girl! We continued to chat for a week, still in the like bubble, then it started; the decline, the reduction, the stalling, the ignoring, the one-word answers. We had set a couple of times to chat on the phone and you never called. You told me you’d visit me again, you never showed. Communication had tumbled down the hill and pushing it back up required hard labor.
However, I’m maturing so instead of playing your game, I set my expectations. I told you what I needed. Communication, communication, communication! We finally spoke on the phone, and I laid it out. I explained that going days without even a “what sup” was out of character and that it was not what we had been doing. You explained you’ve been “busy” which is also A-OKAY I’m not a monster nor clingy, I understand both have lives, what I needed was “Hey, I’m swamped the next couple of days, I’ll try to message you when I get a moment” Honestly, below the bare minimum if you ask me!
You actually agreed! You apologized, you explained why you were engaging in this behavior, and you said “I will do better” I could see the light at the end of that tunnel, it was fixed, our problems were resolved, and we were back baby!
WRONG, our problems were resolved for a mere 24 hours and then, poof, back to the same behavior. I should’ve known there was no changing you. But it’s not that I wanted to change you, I just wanted you to put in the same effort I was, but that was never the plan. A week after that phone call, you had officially ghosted me, my last text was seen but never answered. A phantom of my past.
Looking back at it now I can’t help but think that this was your plan all along, get in my pants, get your fill and disappear back into your life. We had this discussion before, we talked about how I wanted more than a hookup, I wanted a foundation, a relationship with someone who was into me as much as I was into him. But all you ever wanted was a couple nights of fun and then erase me from your memories.
The truth is, I’m not sad; I’m disappointed in myself for falling for your act. I’m angry at you for using me. I’m confused because I don’t understand how anyone could do that. The length you took for some sexy time baffles me. The energy you put just so you can mess with me is unmatched, I’ll rate your performance an A+.
I’m also hurt, and I feel used. I told you what I wanted, and you ignored it and did the one thing I asked you not to do. Perhaps it was a game, see how easy it would be for you to get me. You played your role well, convinced me it would be different and probably laughed on your train ride home.
You only gained from our time together, as for me, I’ve just built my walls up higher, making it harder for the next person to break me. You left me thinking, maybe I’m not wanted, maybe the problem is me, maybe there will be no love in this lifetime because every time I get closer to thinking “oh he could be the one” a man like you proves me wrong.
I want to wish you misery but that would mean I continue to think of you and frankly I don’t want you to ever cross my mind again. It’s damn hard though because every time I’m feeling alone, I think of how you ripped a piece of my sanity away. Don’t get me wrong I’m not heartbroken over a man I had only met once and talked to for less than 2 months. I’m just defeated, and hoping, wishing, praying that someone will come along to make me realize that you were indeed… just… shit.
