2009 Dodge Journey Electrical Problem (of some sort)

2024.06.09 22:41 milk-loafs 2009 Dodge Journey Electrical Problem (of some sort)

Hello people of Reddit! I am working on diag for a 2009 Journey 3.5l, been sitting for about a year, and there's a big problem I cannot figure out where to start. Key in, no cluster power at all, no multifunction switch controls (except the cabin lights rotating switch), no HVAC control.. that's all interior issues. Next up, no junction box relay clicks, hazards flash but no relay sound from anywhere, just nothing. No key functions at all. Battery in fob is fresh, still no difference. I've checked battery voltage, I've checked voltage at junction block, I've checked and cleaned the jump post studs, contacts, and nuts. I've checked and cleaned engine/transmission grounds, verified there was no rodent damage in the harness. Looked under the dash on driver and passenger side and even removed the glove box and only found the one junction box (under the hood, driver side of engine bay) which is weird to me but I work on Kia's for my job so I'm not 100% sure if that's normal. Someone please help!
Summary of verified inspections: Battery voltage, key fob battery (tested 2 fobs), battery terminals, grounds, junction box voltage, PCM connectors (for corrosion), couldn't find a cluster fuse or relay, harness damage, under dash harness connectors.
Any insight is greatly appreciated!

2024.06.09 21:10 SolomonSinclair Character Concept: Kureya, Twilight Mirage

Character Concept: Kureya, Twilight Mirage
My last (but not latest) original character for the moment, I had a lot of fun creating this one. Unlike my others, she has a little bit of lore and a signature weapon (that ended up being a more general purpose version of Neuvillette's, albeit on accident).
This is also the character who, for anyone that saw it, is why my opinion of Yanxue dropped somewhat, as I just enjoyed how this one came out so much.
Anyway, with that said, here she is.
https://preview.redd.it/jappdxn8wk5d1.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&s=ba146b7a86af4d6ce8f6244dd52d801cd0f34633
Kureya, real name Claire, is a Fontaine native who was born in the Fortress of Meropide and spent most of her childhood and teenage years there. Her main past time as a kid was reading smuggled in light novels from Yae Publishing House, with her favorite being the Princess Mina of the Fallen Nation series, which gave her a... Strange personality.
(I'm saying she's a hardcore weeb; or the Teyvat equivalent, anyway. If Fischl can be chuuni, why not a weeb?)
She really fell in love with the concept of samurai and ninja and would often play at being either one in her free time. Eventually, she got out of Meropide and, for old times' sake, bought a Yae Publishing House light novel; this one happened to be Shogun Almighty: Reborn as Raiden With Unlimited Power... Which happened to be a very telling title, as it happened to contain her vision within its pages.
And she immediately used it to try and conjure both a flaming sword and a fiery kunai. Which she succeeded at, somehow.
Thanks to that, she changed her name to Kureya, a Japanese pronunciation of Claire, but she writes it with the kanji 暮屋; the former is read Kure and means "sundown", while the latter is read Ya and is regularly used as a suffix for someone who does something (i.e., Baker is Panya, Blacksmith is Kajiya, etc.).
Yes, that also means that, in that very weeby way of just smashing cool kanji together, her name could translate to Sundowner. Yes, *that* Sundowner.
I'm actually rather proud of how stupidly cheesy, yet thematic, I managed to get her name. With that said, here's the rest of her kit.
Name Kureya (Claire)
Title Twilight Mirage
Rarity 5*
Weapon Catalyst
Vision Pyro
Model Type Tall Female
Constellation Imaginarius
Region Fontaine
Affiliation Fortress of Meropide
Special Dish "Holy Water" ("Pure Water" variant)
Namecard Kureya: Light in Darkness
Base Stats (Lv90)
Base HP Base ATK Base DEF Special Stat (Pyro DMG Bonus)
11,962 351 600 28.8%
Ascension and Talent Materials
World Boss Material Emperor's Resolution
Local Specialty Spring of the First Dewdrop
General Enemy Material Firm Arrowhead/Sharp Arrowhead/Weathered Arrowhead
Talent Books Justice
Domain Boss Material Denial and Judgement
Normal Attack - Yagyu Thrown Blade Technique (Adapted)
  • Normal Attack - Performs up to 4 consecutive attacks that take the form of fiery kunai, dealing Pyro DMG.
  • Charged Attack - Consumes Stamina to conjure a blazing greatbow as long as she is tall to entire the Twilight Hawkeye state and fire an explosive arrow, dealing AoE Pyro DMG. In this state, Kureya can move and change facing while charging a more powerful shot. If Kureya's HP is above 50%, she will consume her HP until she is at 25% of her Max HP, converting it into additional DMG.
  • Plunging Attack - Plunges from mid-air, dealing AoE Pyro DMG upon contact with the ground.
Attribute Scaling Level 10
1-Hit DMG (%) 68.11
2-Hit DMG (%) 63.94
3-Hit DMG (%) 73.87
4-Hit DMG (%) 99.63
Charged Attack DMG (%) 313.34
Charged Attack Stamina Cost 50
HP Consumption 3% Max HP / 0.5s
DMG Bonus (% of HP Consumed) 48
Plunge DMG (%) 112.34
Low/High Plunge DMG (%) 224.62 / 300.37
Obviously, the star of the show here is her Charged Attack, which functions almost identically to Neuvillette's. The main difference is that it's not a continuous attack; instead, it's more akin to the Lv2 Charged Shot from some Bow users, where you have to hold it for several seconds before releasing it. This is also a large part of why she gets such a massive DMG Bonus from her consumed HP: if you get interrupted or miss, you just wasted all that time.
Elemental Skill - Return to Honor
Condenses the power of flame into a sleek and slender curved blade, before rapidly drawing it in a wide slice, dealing Pyro DMG to surrounding opponents and entering Blade Mode.
In this mode, Kureya's Normal and Charged Attacks, as well as Elemental Skill, change as follows:
Normal Attack - Yagyu Swordsmanship (Adapted)
Performs up to 4 consecutive sword strikes, dealing Pyro DMG.
Charged Attack - Empowered Iai (Adapted)
Assumes a sheathed stance and begins charging a powerful draw cut, before unleashing an all-encompassing 360 degree circular slash, dealing AoE Pyro DMG.
In this state, Kureya can move and change facing while she projects a blazing barrier of whirling blades to shield her as she prepares. Max DMG absorbed scales off Kureya's Max HP and absorbs Pyro DMG 250% more effectively. If Kureya is attacked while this barrier persists, she will finish charging instantly.
Additionally, if her HP is above 50%, she will consume her HP until she is at 25% of her Max HP, converting it into additional DMG.
Elemental Skill - Come and Get It
Kureya opens her arms wide, blazing sword dangling negligently from one hand as she taunts opponents, attracting them to attack her.
Additionally, Kureya gains the Zen of the Mind's Eye effect, which will restore a percentage of her Max HP and will decrease the charge time for Charged Attack - Empowered Iai (Adapted) by 1.5s.
Holding the Skill button will return Kureya to Catalyst Mode and enter the Twilight Hawkeye state.
Arkhe - Pneuma
At certain intervals, after using the Empowered Iai (Adapted), a Spiritbreath Thorn will descend and pierce opponents, dealing Pneuma-aligned Pyro DMG.
Gameplay Notes
  • Return to Honor is not deactivated if Kureya leaves the field. However, its duration will continue to tick down while Kureya is off-field.
  • When this Skill hits at least one opponent, it generates 3 Elemental Particles. When Normal Attacks hit opponents, it generates 0.6 Particles and when Charged Attacks hit opponents, it generates 1.75 Particles.
  • The cooldown starts immediately after the first input.
  • Kureya's Interruption Resistance is increased while in Blade Mode.
  • Plunging Attacks in Blade Mode are identical to Kureya's Standard Plunging Attacks.
  • Empowered Iai (Adapted) takes roughly 2 seconds to fully charge.
Artifacts and Weapon Interactions
  • Normal Attack effects apply to Catalyst Mode and Blade Mode.
  • Charged Attack effects apply to Catalyst Mode and Charged Attack - Empowered Iai (Adapted).
  • Elemental Skill effects apply to the initial Blade Mode change and to Elemental Skill - Come and Get It.
Attribute Scaling Level 10 Level 13
Skill DMG (%) 129.6 153
1-Hit DMG (%) 122.79 148.8
2-Hit DMG (%) 121.99 147.94
3-Hit DMG (%) 151.48 179.51
4-Hit DMG (%) 188.37 219
Charged Attack DMG (%) 326.91 396.12
Charged Attack Stamina Cost 25 25
HP Consumption 3% / 0.5s 3% / 0.5s
DMG Bonus (% of HP Consumed) 82 106
"Come and Get It" HP Restored 100 100
Spiritbreath Thorn DMG (%) 25.92 30.6
Spiritbreath Thorn Interval 9s 9s
Duration 18s 18s
CD 26s 26s
As should be obvious, this is heavily inspired by Childe's Foul Legacy: Raging Tide, but with a few key differences: - It has a fixed duration and fixed CD, so it's easier to play with. - It doesn't deactivate upon swapping characters. - It doesn't disable Plunging Attacks. - It trades the quadratic scaling and regular DMG of Riptide for a single large swipe.
Elemental Burst - Bloodshed's End
Performs different attacks based on what mode Kureya is in.
Catalyst Mode - Bloodflame Familiar
Conjures and hurls a giant flaming shurikan that explodes on impact, dealing AoE Pyro DMG and creating a ring of Molten Shuriken that orbit your active character.
If Kureya's HP is above 50% when this ability is cast, she will consume her HP until she is at 25% of her Max HP and will grant the Molten Shuriken a DMG Bonus equal to a percentage of the total HP consumed.
Molten Shuriken
  • Increases the character's interruption to resistance.
  • Your active character's Normal Attacks will trigger a coordinated attack once every second, dealing Pyro DMG.
  • When Molten Shuriken hit opponents, Kureya will restore HP for all nearby party members, and the amount restored is based on Kureya's ATK.
Blade Mode - One Mind
Assuming a sheathed stance, Kureya briefly charges before unleashing a nigh-invisible flurry of slashes, striking everything around her and dealing AoE Pyro DMG.
Refunds a portion of its Energy Cost after use.
Gameplay Notes
  • The Elemental Burst, Blade Mode - One Mind, has a 9m radius (for reference, this is the same radius as Kazuha's Burst).
Attribute Scaling Level 10 Level 13
Skill DMG (Catalyst) (%) 190.96 229.05
Molten Shuriken DMG (%) 77.69 95.33
DMG Bonus (% of HP Consumed) 18 24
HP Regeneration Per Hit (% of ATK+) 69 + 900 90 + 1,200
Molten Shuriken Duration 15s 15s
Skill DMG (Blade (%) 1026.41 1211.76
Energy Return (Blade Mode) 20 20
CD 15s 15s
Energy Cost 60 60
Similar to her Skill, her Burst is also heavily inspired by Childe's, which only made sense, and one mode gets an Energy Return. However, that's where the similarities stop. Her Catalyst Mode burst, while doing okay damage, provides an off-field coordinated attack with solid damage of its own and a DMG Boost if Kureya's above 50% HP and healing on hit. Her Blade Mode burst, on the other hand, is just a big fat nuke that would make for some obscene numbers if you managed to vape or melt it.
1st Ascension Passive - If You Want to Make it Easy On Me
After using Come and Get It, the CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG of Charged Attack - Empowered Iai (Adapted) are increased by 20% and 60%, respectively, for 6s.
  • Come and Get It more or less negates Kureya's reliance on a grouper like Kazuha to hit opponents with her Empowered Iai, so you obviously want to use it first. This makes it so playing her as intended is very beneficial.
4th Ascension Passive - The Spark That Starts a Wildfire
So long as a Molten Shuriken is in play, when your active character triggers a Pyro-related Elemental Reaction, the opponent shall be stricken with a Bloodflame Rebuke that deals Pyro DMG equal to 80% of Kureya's ATK.
  • This gives her Catalyst Mode burst extra DMG to further encourage its use, as people'd probably see that 1k% modifier on her Blade Mode burst and use it almost exclusively (same with Childe's melee burst having both a significantly higher multiplier and the secondary DMG from Riptide Blast).
Utility Passive - Flambed to Perfection
When Kureya cooks an ATK-boosting dish perfectly, she has a 12% chance to receive double the product.
  • Nothing much to say, but I find it weird that Xiangling is still the only character with this passive.
1st Constellation - Woe Be Upon These Blind Fools
While charging Charged Attack - Empowered Iai (Adapted) after using Come and Get It, surrounding opponents and objects will be pulled towards Kureya.
  • So remember how I talked about Come and Get It negates her reliance on groupers? Yeah, this turns it into an "I ain't got all day" button.
2nd Constellation - You Can(Not) Prevent Wildfires
When Kureya's Normal Attacks hit opponents, her Pyro DMG Bonus is increased by 10% for 4s. This effect can be triggered once every 0.1s. Max 5 stacks.
  • Shamelessly stolen from Cyno, but given that you could easily play Kureya almost as a hypercarry, it fits.
3rd Constellation - The Proper Way to Wield a Blade
Return to Honor Talent Level +3
4th Constellation - Cry Havoc
Elemental Reactions triggered by Molten Shuriken will ignore 60% of the opponent's DEF.
  • Aside from giving her off-field DMG a further boost to encourage using both versions, this would also make her go very nicely as the trigger in a vape or melt team if you wanted to use an on-field Hydro or Cryo character.
5th Constellation - Resentment's End
Bloodshed's End Talent Level +3
6th Constellation - Dragon Flash
After Blade Mode - One Mind is used, Kureya initiates a follow-up slash against the nearest opponent, dealing Pyro DMG equal to 200% of its DMG.
  • You know how some 5*s have an absolutely cracked C6 as a way to entice you to whale for them? Yeah.
And now for her signature weapon:
Stats at Lv90 R1
  • Name: Gospel From Afar
  • Base ATK; 608
  • 2nd Stat: CRIT DMG
  • 2nd Stat: 66.2%
  • Effect -
  • Betwixt Night and Day: ATK SPD of Normal and Charged Attacks is increased by 16%. When current HP increases or decreases, Charged Attack DMG will be increased by 20% for 6s. Max 4 stacks. This effect can be triggered once every 0.5s. When the wielder has 4 stacks, Elemental Burst DMG will be increased by 32%.
(Appearance-wise, it's a very heavily embellished and accessorized copy of Shogun Almighty.)
And that's it. That's Kureya. I enjoyed the hell out of creating her, despite not liking HP consumption mechanics most of the time, but I really wanted to do several things: a ninja-themed character whose charged attack had an aiming mode, a samurai-themed character that wielded a flaming sword, like Kazuha's splash art, and a character with a different take on coordinated Pyro attacks than Yanxue.
Copying Childe's mechanics let me do all three at the same time.
As a result, I almost certainly went waaaay overboard when creating her, but I'm more than satisfied with how she turned out, so I'm okay with it (not like tweaking numbers is that hard).

2024.06.09 21:00 quasicoherent_drunk Scrolling with Nano

I was wondering if it would be possible to use a key on my keyboard to toggle scrolling with the Nano trackball.
I did find a previous Reddit post that seems to use the NumLock status to accomplish this, but it is from 3 years ago (with more recent comments saying that it is no longer working), and I was wondering if there was another solution.
The README on the QMK GitHub mentions DRAG_SCROLL, but would I be correct in guessing that this needs to be bound on a button on the trackball? (So it wouldn't work for the Nano?)

iPad Pro battery “magically” grow 6% in 3 weeks.
The battery in my iPad Pro M1 11 inch I bought in May 2021 has been performing badly late last year 2023 as it should after 2.5 yrs of heavy usage and fast charging. I went to Apple Store to purchase the $165 CAD battery service but they told me the diagnostic shows 83% last Nov.
Ok, So i wait. I went 3 times earlier this year, sometime they told me 82 sometime 83. Either way, they denied me the service bc it is above 80. They want 900+ to replace if it is above 80 not 165. So i tried to heavily discharge and recharge for a few weeks.
3 weeks ago, they told me 82 again. Then 2 weeks ago, they told me 83. Wow, grow 1 percent in 1 week? Now they told me it is 88% today.
Just Wow! Apple revolutionize the battery industry! My battery grows 6 percents in 3 weeks! So in another few months, it will get back to 100%? Why didn’t they put that technology in the Apple car?
All kidding aside, it is really frustrating that Apple keep lying about the actual battery status. I am a iOS developer myself. I went into the Analytics files on iPad. The last nominal charge capacity 6086 / the maxFCC 8043 = 75.7% while Apple’s fake test keep telling me 82 83 now 88. Shows how many they want to selling you new iPad instead of just fixing the old ones. It is ridiculous at this point, grow 6 percent? Are you kidding me. 1% maybe margins of error but 6?
Why is it so hard for the customer to pay for the service they advertised on the website? All the mother natural skit last yr all BS? Instead of simply replace the battery, they tried their hardest to sell you a new device creating for e-waste. How do you feel lying to mother natural, Tim Apple. Shame.

2024.06.09 20:12 cold-cut- 2002 Rav4 Anti-Theft and Power Locks Cannot Coexist...

Hi-
I just bought a 2002 Toyota Rav4. When I got it home I realized the power locks were not operational (my fault for not testing them). My partner opened up the fuse box and noticed the fuse was missing for the power locks circuit and so he pulled a different fuse and tried it in the slot. The locks worked perfectly but when he went to start the car the Anti-Theft system kicked in and the vehicle wouldn't start (red light flashing).
We were given only one key to the vehicle and it is after market with no fob, so the only way to turn off the system was to disconnect the battery. We have tried a few times to get the locks working, but the anti-theft system kicks in every time we enable the locks.
My questions- Is this just a fussy electrical problem that is not worth fixing? Or is there something obvious we aren't considering that might fix this? Would removing the anti-theft system completely fix the problem?
Thank you!

2024.06.09 20:03 SunHeadPrime I Install Cable for a Living. My Last Job has Me Rethinking my Career Choices.

My hands are trembling to the point where I've had to restart this several times. I'm a guy who doesn't scare easily, but this encounter has me shaking like a hit dog. I'm still sitting in my work truck, trying to work up the courage to step outside again. Worse, I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to tell my boss what happened. I was already on thin ice with him, and this shit might cause me to break through to the freezing water below.
But fuck it, because this was weird.
I install cable for a living. I didn't have dreams of stringing cable when I was a little kid, but my previous life choices left me with few options. In high school, I fell in with the wrong crowd. It started with skipping school, sneaking alcohol at weekend parties, and some petty theft, but it didn't stay that way for long. Soon, I dropped out and dedicated my life to committing robberies to pay for my pill addiction. I wasn't living as much as I was running on a treadmill. I did whatever I could to stay on my feet but constantly felt myself slipping.
My bottom came when I was jumped by two guys who sold me pills. I had bought from them before and trusted them, but the feeling was not mutual. Someone had dimed a buddy of theirs out to the police, and he was looking at real jail time. They assumed it was me and beat me senseless.
I was greeted at the door with a punch to the jaw that sent me reeling. My brain, already addled and slowed by Oxi, was in the middle of putting together what was happening when the next punch caught me in the temple. I collapsed to the ground and covered my neck and face as best as I could. The next few minutes were a flurry of punches, kicks, and stomps. When it was all over, I had a broken jaw, a shattered wrist, several wounds that required fifty total stitches, and a concussion.
That's how I kicked my painkiller addiction.
I can joke now, but the next six months were the hardest in my life. The withdrawals I had were the worst thing I've ever experienced. Having them while I was recuperating from my injuries was a circle of hell I didn't think existed. I wanted to die most days and felt lost in the darkness. But sobriety was the beacon on the horizon. Even during my darkest moments, I could still see the fuzzy spark of white light off in the distance. It kept me going. Six months from my beat-down day, I came out the other side healthier but weaker.
I needed a job but had limited skills. Thankfully, I had a former pill buddy who managed to keep steady employment with the cable company. We always got along, and he called in a few favors and hooked me up. I got hired, but it was a struggle. Not the work, which was easy to learn, but dealing with the public without telling them to fuck off. Worse, was trying to avoid the flood of illegal substances that are around you at all times. Customers will offer you weed or pills for all the channels, or bored co-workers will have something to "make the day pass by." It's a lot to dodge, especially if you're in recovery. Whenever I felt the itch again, I'd feel the scar tissue from my wrist surgery, and the itch would pass.
The last week has been one of those "Shit, is it Friday yet?" weeks that seem to be growing in frequency these days. I don't want to bore you with the details, but needless to say, most nights, I needed to reach out to my sponsor and have them talk me off the ledge. We recently had a turnover at the executive level, and my new boss Rory was a tremendous cock. A rager at levels science hasn't ever seen before. Just the worst dude imaginable.
Part of Rory's new crusade was coming in and firing a bunch of guys. The company called it "checking for redundancies in the labor force," but we all knew what it was. He was picking off two classes of people: high earners and guys with spotty pasts. I was in the latter group and imagined it was just a matter of time before my number got pulled. I was on pins and needles all week. I made sure I was the greatest cable installer you'd ever meet. So far, I was getting high marks but the forced joviality was wearing thin.
It's safe to say my joy had left on a one-way ticket. I have no clue when—or if—she'd return.
Back to this shit. I had just finished up my last job of the day when my work phone started buzzing. I cursed and thought about not answering, but the threat of unemployment loomed too large for me to do that. I picked up and knew from the jump my day was far from over. Denise from dispatch asked if I could cover a job left hanging because of "scheduling conflicts" (see: the original installer had been let go). It was near where I was and was a simple install.
I gritted my teeth and agreed. I liked Denise and knew she was worried about the hammer falling on her, too. She thanked me profusely, and promised to bring me cookies tomorrow. Since she's a hellcat in the kitchen and getting close to a dispatcher never hurts, I said no worries. I hung up, balled up my jacket, and screamed into it. I felt better after that.
981 Maple Street was about five minutes away, but it felt like a world away. Maple Street was at the end of the neighborhood where large swaths of grass fields faded into a thicket of woods. The woods rose up into the foothills until they graduated to mountains. To borrow a phrase from Shel Silverstein, the house resided where the sidewalk ends.
The house, an off-white birdhouse ranch type, was a little run-down but no worse than any of the others that populated this neighborhood. This place had been hit hard by economic times, and property values had plummeted. It was slowly recovering. In five years, this would be a place most current residents wouldn’t be able to afford. The front yard had a large oak tree that looked amazing but had killed the grass under its canopy. The rest of the yard looked well cared for.
I knocked and heard a few voices talking on the other side of the door. It opened, and a man in his late 40s stood there with a steaming cup of coffee in one hand. He was tall and thin, save for a middle-aged paunch. His face was starting to crinkle at the edges, but he was southern California middle-aged, which meant he was holding up pretty well. He did look tired, though—the bags under his eyes were full-on steamer trunks.
"You with the cable company?" he asked, knowing I was.
I nodded. "You requested an install, right?"
"Yes, I did. Please, come in."
He opened the door wide, and I walked in. The house was pretty bare with a bachelor pad aesthetic. That didn't make much sense since I heard a female voice talking to him. I assumed it was his wife. I believe in a lot of wild shit, but to think that a wife would be fine with their house decorated like a 23-year-old bachelor lived there was a bridge too far.
"I'm Tom," the guy said, extending his hand. I shook it. "What did you need from my end?"
"Do you know if there was a previous hookup here?"
"Ugh, yeah. There is one in this room and another in the back bedroom."
"Okay. I should put the modem in a spot that'll hit the whole house. The signal can get wonky if it's in a room behind a wall or bricks or anything."
"This room is probably the best spot then," he said.
"Perfect. I have to get under the house, check the old connections, and replace some parts. Where's your hatch to get under the house?"
"Oh, it's around back. You can exit out this side door and walk through the backyard. It's on the eastern side. You might need a screwdriver to remove the grate. Do you need one?"
I pulled a screwdriver from my pocket and showed him. "I should be good. Thank you, though."
"I should've guessed you'd have one."
"I appreciate your concern. Is there anything in the backyard I should be worried about? Dogs? Kids? Wild dogs? Wild kids?"
It was standard banter, and it always got a chuckle out of people. Same thing happened here. "Nothing to worry about," he said. "You should be good."
"Alright. I'll get started so you can get online as soon as possible."
"Great! If you need anything, I'll be doing some work in the back bedroom."
I nodded and headed for the side door. The dining room door led to the pie wedge-shaped backyard, which was larger in the back than the front made it look. The grass was as cooked as its kin in the front, but islands of green weeds seemed to be thriving. In the corner of the lot, an old metal shed stood, rusted to the point where I assumed divine intervention kept it standing. It seemed to have been there since the house had been built – or maybe several decades before.
When I turned the corner of the house, I spotted a woman and child staring into the corner of the yard, their backs facing me. The Woman wore a faded blue dress that fit her well. Tom had, it seemed, out-kicked his coverage with her. I didn't want to startle them, so I offered a friendly "hello" to the pair. The kid started to turn, but the mother placed a hand on their shoulder and kept their heads facing away from me. I squinted along the treeline, trying to see what they were concentrating on, but I didn't see anything unusual.
Just wanting to be done with the job, I let them be and moved on. I turned another corner to the house's short side and spotted the grate leading to the crawlspace. The grate looked as old as the shed, and I wasn't sure I would even need the screwdriver to open it. Hell, I was sure the thing would disintegrate in my hands as soon as I touched it.
I crouched and was about to pull it off when I heard something rustling near me. I glanced back to where I had seen the mom and kid, but they were gone. I assumed I had heard them leaving. I pulled the grate off – I was right, no screwdriver necessary – and as I set it aside, something caught my attention out of the corner of my eye.
It was the kid. A boy around eight or so. But they weren't staring at me exactly. They were looking away from me, staring up at the roof line. I found it odd. Clearly, the kid wanted to talk to me but had turned their back on me. I coughed to let them know that I knew they were there, but they didn't respond.
"Hey man, what's up there?" I said.
"Nothing nice," he said, still keeping their gaze away from me.
"Oh," I said, "Not going to hurt me, is it?"
"Maybe," he said.
Not the answer I was expecting. "What is it?"
"They told me you'd know soon enough."
As he said that, I felt something crawling across my hand. I pulled my hand away from the house and shook it. I saw a spider land in a pile of leaves and scurry away. I let out a nervous laugh. I'm not scared of spiders or anything, but the shock of being told some unseen thing was watching me and didn't look pleased, coupled with the sensation of something on my skin, was enough to justify a quickened heartbeat.
I looked back at where the kid had been standing, but he was gone. I chalked it up to kids being little weirdos and went back to work. The faster I could get this installation done, the quicker I could go home and smoke a bowl. I let Kush be my guide. I put up my hood, turned on my small flashlight, and shimmied through the opening under the house.
I know guys who've worked for the company for years and still dread going into a crawl space. Granted, it's not my favorite thing to do, but I don't mind either. The bugs can be a nuisance but if you don't bother them, they tend to not bother you. Same with rats and mice. Raccoons, though? I crawl out and call animal control. Those little dudes are cute but nasty as all get out. My path today was nothing but cobwebs, so I was okay.
I flashed my light around and saw where the cable line went up into the living room floor. My job here was to ensure the coaxial line's integrity was still good. If it had been chewed on or anything, I'd replace it. Sometimes, I just replaced it anyway—saving myself a potential job later down the line.
I crawled over to where the line came in from the pedestal and started my once-over. I not only looked for any damage but also ran the line through my hands to make sure my eyes didn't miss anything. I was under the dining room area when I heard that side door close.
I stopped. Tom said something, but it was muffled. I wanted to be nosy, so I waited a beat to hear if anyone spoke back to him. Someone did. It was soft and quiet – I assumed it was the Boy – and I didn't make out what they asked, but I did hear Tom's response. In a firm voice, he said, "No, not right now. Run along."
There were footsteps over me that faded into another section of the home. Tom said, "He always wants to jump the gun. How many times do I have to tell him?"
I suppressed a laugh at the last line. It's the official father's lament. I kept moving my hand down the line and didn't feel nicks along the cable. In fact, on closer inspection, the line looked almost new. I was planning to change it, but this looked like it had been installed last week.
I could hear someone walk into the living room as I reached the spot where the line went through the house. Another pair of footsteps followed the first, and I heard a breathy but detached woman's voice ask, "Can we show our faces now?"
"I just told the boy 'no.' What makes you any different?" Tom said, an edge to his voice.
A chill raced through my body. I knew those words, but this conversation made me feel like I spoke another language. Can we show our faces? Why would you not?
"Do you think he'll see us?"
"If I have my way," he said, not finishing that thought. "Leave me be. I must try to get some things done before he leaves, and you two keep bothering me."
What did Tom mean to get some things done before I left? What did he have in mind? While trying to process all this, I heard something shuffle in the darkness just beyond my flashlight beam. I moved it around, trying to see the telltale glowing eyes of varmints, but nothing flashed back at me.
I heard something shuffling again, this time down by my feet. I cocked my head as best as I could and shone the flashlight into that corner of the house but, again, there wasn't anything else down here but me and a thousand spiders. I sighed and finished my inspection of the wire.
As I turned to crawl back out from under the house, I heard somebody sneaking around on the floor above me. The wood groaned as the person moved slowly. I wasn't sure what they were doing, but they wanted to keep it a secret. A shadow fell over the pinprick of light from where the cable went into the house. Someone was standing over it.
"Can you hear them down there? Moving in the dark?" It was the Boy. “They like the dark.”
"What are you saying?"
"The little shadows," he said, "They live down there. Do you hear them?"
This kid was creepy as hell. "I, ugh, I can't hear you, dude," I said, inching my body away from the wire, "We can talk inside."
"They're going to get you, but that's okay," he said, "It only hurts for a little bit, and then you're fine."
Fuck. That. I had no desire to respond to that nightmare of a statement. I hastened my inch-worming, heading back towards the open hatch. As I did, I heard more movement in the darkness around me. I tried to ignore it, but it was a fool's gambit. It was impossible to ignore.
I was getting closer to the opening when I saw a pair of tiny legs walk in front of the hatch. It was the Boy. How did he get there so quickly and without me hearing him run on the floor? I didn't have time to run through the scientific method because the Boy leaned down and placed the metal grate back over the hatch.
"Hey! Hey!" I yelled. "I'm still under here!"
The Boy didn't stop. Instead, he placed a trashcan in front of the grate, enshrouding the entire crawlspace in darkness and trapping me inside.
"Hey! I need you to move that!" I screamed. No response. I raised my fist as high as possible and punched the floor above me to hopefully get Tom’s attention. That was a mistake, as I managed to punch straight into an old nail. I felt it puncture in between my knuckles. The pain was instant, and I let out a howl.
I shook my hand and swore a blue streak. I reached up with my other hand, felt the tip of the nail I had managed to punch, and found a flat spot next to it. I banged hard on the floor and yelled again for some help. Nobody responded. Not at first.
Then I heard someone chuckle under the house.
I couldn't locate where it had come from because it sounded like it was all around me. I swung my light around as best as I could but didn't see anything. No glowing eyes, nothing. I inched forward a bit, and someone laughed again – this time, it was to my right. I turned my light in that direction and saw a sudden flood of light fill the space under the house.
"What the hell?" I said, my desire to leave overtaken by a desire to know what was unfolding next to me.
A pair of kid legs dropped down from the hole in the floor. I realized then that the hole must be an interior crawlspace. The kid had blocked off the metal grate and opened this hatch for some reason. While he dropped his legs down, he didn't move any further.
"Hey, you have to open that metal grate," I yelled. "I don't want to be trapped down here."
"They told me they needed you," he said, followed by a slight chuckle.
"What the fuck are you talking about?" I said, not caring that I was talking to a child. "Open the goddamn grate!"
"The shadows are approaching," he said, pulling himself back into the house. He placed the lid back on the hole, and I was trapped in the dark again. I cursed to myself and started pounding on the floor again.
"Hey! Someone come help me!"
That's when I felt something run across my legs. I nearly jumped out of my skin. It didn't feel like the tiny claws of a passing rat. It was cold to the touch, but as it hit my skin, I felt a burn in my bones. It's hard to explain, but I felt both extremes simultaneously. Whatever it was skittered off into the darkness of the other side of the crawl space.
The kid started laughing again, which brought me back to reality. I army crawled as fast as I could to the grate. I balled up my fist and punched in the middle of the metal. The blow knocked the old nails out of the wall, and the grate broke up. I was about to push away the garbage can when it suddenly wheeled out of the way.
I saw Tom's legs standing there.
"You okay?" he asked, concern in his voice.
I got out from under the house so fast that I left a me-sized dirt cloud in my place. Once out, I shook my body loose as if I had things crawling all over me. Tom watched but didn't say anything at first. We finally locked eyes, and he could see the rage, fear, and confusion on my face. He wisely waited until I spoke first.
"What the hell is wrong with your kid? He blocked me under there and taunted me from the indoor crawlspace."
"What are you talking about?"
"He told me the shadow people or something were watching, and then he blocked me under the house!"
Tom's face twisted up into confusion. "I...I don't understand."
"I can't make it any simpler, Tom!" I screamed, letting unprofessionalism take root.
"I don't have a kid."
It hit me like an Ali right cross. My vision got dizzy, and I struggled to catch my breath. I stared at his face, looking for the sign of a lie or a joke, but he was as stone-faced as an Easter Island statue. After a beat, I found my sense again. "I heard you talking to him in the living room when I was under the house."
"One, I was on a phone call. Two, are you spying on me? What the hell, man?"
"I wasn't spying, and you weren't on the phone," I said. I also heard you talking to your wife. She asked you if she could show her face or something."
"I don't have a wife either."
I shook my head. "I fucking saw them in the backyard! They were staring at the fence!"
Tom paused and cocked his head to the side. When he spoke, it was softly, trying to calm me down. "Are you...did you have a few drinks before the appointment? Or a pill or something? No judging – I know pill heads. I won't report you or anything, but I understand if you need to come back tomorrow with a clearer head."
"I'm sober," I said, gritting my teeth. "But I know what I saw. What I heard."
"As the tree said to the lumberjack, I'm stumped," Tom said. "You look a little flush. You want a bottle of water or something? I can show you I'm here all alone."
My adrenaline had seeped out of my body, and I was starting to feel like myself again. I nodded at Tom, and he smiled. "I'll go grab you one. Do you want to come into the AC?"
"No, I'm okay. I need to double-check the connection to the pedestal."
"Sure. Be bright back," Tom said as he walked off.
But I had no intention of checking the connections. I was going to check on Tom. I didn't believe him at all. Something weird was going on, and I needed to know what. As soon as he turned the corner around the house, I broke out my flashlight and headed back to the crawlspace.
I dropped to the ground and shone my beam into the darkness. Something had crawled on me, and I wanted to see what it was. I moved my light into every section of the crawlspace but saw no eyes glowing back at me.
"If you're under there, call back."
There was nothing. I was starting to feel like a paranoid idiot. I called out once again just to be sure, but again, nothing called back. I shut off my light and sighed. I started pushing myself back to my feet when I heard a faint woman's voice call out, "Can we show our faces now?"
"Not yet," someone hissed from the trees above me. I snapped my head up, expecting to see someone hanging on a branch over my head, but I just saw green leaves.
"Can we show our faces now?" It was the Boy. It sounded like he was on the roof. I shielded my eyes and glanced at the roof but didn't see him.
"No. He's not ready yet," someone whispered in my ear. I snapped around, throwing a punch as I did, only to slam my fist into the fence. I felt one of my knuckles crack as it hit the wood, and the pain shot up my arm like lightning. Within seconds, my hand started to puff up, and blood dripped out the wounds.
The Boy chuckled again. It came from under the house. I looked down at the grate and saw his legs disappear into the darkness.
"Hey!" I called and dropped to the ground. I pulled out my flashlight and shone into the darkness again. I was confident I'd see him, but he wasn't there. Nobody was.
I sat up and felt goosebumps turn my arms into braille. I glanced over to the corner of the house and was surprised to see the disappearing hemline of the faded blue dress. I rushed over to the corner and didn't see the Woman. I saw Tom with a bottle of water.
"You okay?"
"Where did that woman go?" I asked, my voice panicking. "She was just here."
"Sir, do you need me to call your boss for you? You're starting to scare me."
"What's up with this house? Is it haunted?"
Tom started laughing. "I hope not. I just moved in. I'd hate to have roommates again, especially ones who leave ectoplasm all over the place."
As I stared at him, I saw the Woman and the Boy emerge from the other corner of the house. They looked up on the roof, their faces obscured by their hands and the sun. I pointed a finger at them and screamed, "They're right there!"
Tom spun around and looked, but there wasn't anything there. He turned back to me, not sure what to say. Instead, he handed me the bottle of water. "I gotta be honest. I didn't see anything. Drink the water...you might have heat stroke."
I threw the bottle on the ground. "I don't have fucking heat stroke. I have a man that's lying about these things." I got close to him. "What did you have planned for me? Why do they keep asking to show their faces?"
"I don't," he said, but I didn't stay to hear him finish his thought. I walked right past him and turned the corner of the house. As I did, I saw the blue hem disappear through the door that led to the kitchen. I followed right behind her.
I walked into the house, which was as silent as a corpse. The Woman and Boy were nowhere to be seen. "Hello?" I called out. "I just saw you guys walk in here. Where are you?"
The door behind me opened up. Tom walked in, his face reddening with anger. "You can't just walk into my house."
"I saw them walk in. Where are they?"
"I keep telling you, it's just me and you here. Now, if you want to finish your work…."
I walked away from him and headed toward the bedroom where I had seen the Boy standing. I wanted to check that crawl space. The room was empty, not even a moving box in there, so finding the hatch that led under the house was easy. I went into the closet and pried the hatch open.
Tom entered the room behind me, more confused now than angry. "I don't want a line run through here."
"The Boy was standing in this spot. I saw his legs. I spoke to him. He told me the shadows needed me for something." I glared down into the darkness under the house. Despite Tom's feigned declarations that there wasn't another person in the house, I knew he wasn't being honest.
"Okay, I'm pretty sure you're back on pills and in the middle of a delusion," he said.
"How did you know I had a pill addiction?"
"The way you're acting, it wasn't a hard guess."
"I'm sober, but I did have a problem with pills. I never told you. I don't tell anyone."
Tom stood there, confused about how to answer. I stood up and stared him down. He looked away, but I didn't move my gaze. "Who are you? Who put you up to this? Was it Rory? He trying to get me fired?"
Tom's shoulders sagged. "You got me," he said. "Rory hired me to get you in trouble. I'm... I'm sorry. He offered me free cable for a year and assured me you were a bad guy and, well…. I'm weak."
"That's really fuc…," I stopped. "You're lying. Right now. You're lying. Why?"
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something dash past the open crawlspace hatch. I turned to the hatch opening and then back to Tom.
"Are you trying to stop me from looking in there?"
He didn't respond.
"What's under there?"
"He is," he said. "The Boy. He hides under there all the time. He has...friends down there."
"The shadow people?"
Tom shrugged, "What he calls them. I call them a menace. Impossible to get my work done with them causing a racket."
"What work?"
"Things you'd never understand in a million years," he said, "Things beyond your brain's capacity to imagine. Things that will help usher in a new world. Your kind's time is coming to a close. My work represents the new order."
I stared at him. I wasn't sure if I should run away or punch his lights out. Instead, I just spat out, "Bro, what the fuck?"
"Can we show our faces now?" the Boy called out from under the house.
I looked down at the hatch and then back at Tom. He nodded toward the opening. "Do you want to see your future?"
"Fuck it," I said. I got down, grabbed the sides of the opening, and lowered my head under the house.
I kept my eyes closed for a second, assuming I'd either see something horrifying or something would hit me in the face. When nothing struck me, I opened my eyes. It was dark, and I couldn't make out anything.
"There's nothing under here," I said.
"Can we show our faces now?" said the Boy from somewhere under the house.
"Show him," Tom said.
I sat back up, grabbed my flashlight from my pocket, and flipped it on. I looked at Tom, "If you try anything, so help me, God."
Tom just smiled. I looked back down at the hatch and sighed. I was suddenly hit with a bolt of common sense. What was I doing? My internal alarms were going off and I was ignoring them. Curiosity had gotten me this far, but my fight instincts were starting to lose to my flight. No job was worth this.
"Man, fuck this," I said, reversing course and standing. I turned to confront Tom, but he was gone. I hadn't heard him leave, but there wasn't a trace of him there. "Tom? Where the hell are you?"
He didn't respond, and I decided that I had hit my "weird shit" quota for the day. I closed the closet door and headed back into the living room to grab my gear. I'd call dispatch and tell them someone else had to come out and finish the….
The wood floor cracked, splintered, and gave way when I put my weight on it. I fell through the floor and landed with a thud on the dirt in the crawl space. On the way down, I hit my ribs on a crossbeam and heard them crack and knock the wind out of me. As I lay on the dirt, writhing in pain, my lungs did their damnedest to find a breath. It couldn't, and my vision started to blur at the edges. For a fleeting few seconds, I envisioned my death on a dirty crawlspace floor. It wasn’t comforting.
I rolled onto my back and finally took in a massive gulp of life-saving air. The blurring vision subsided, and all that remained was the aching pain of a busted rib. My muscles around my rib cage spasmed and pulled tight against my lungs. After the initial big breath, I could only take shallow gulps because the pain was searing.
I lay there for a few seconds, collecting my thoughts, when I felt something skitter across my legs again. I kicked out of instinct but didn't hit anything. Instead, I heard the chuckling again. My flashlight had fallen out of my hand. I found it and turned it on.
This time, I did see something. Pairs of eyes—dozens of them—watched me from the darkness that surrounded me. These weren't possums or rats. I never hoped to find a raccoon under the house more than I did at that moment. I knew whatever these things were, they weren't natural and they wanted to harm me.
"Still want to know what they plan to do to you?" the Boy asked from behind me.
I turned around and shone the light where I heard the voice. The Boy was lying on his stomach, his face looking down at the ground. All I could see at the moment was the top of his head.
"Wha-what's going on?" I said, the light bouncing from my trembling hand.
"I can show you my face now," he said. He raised his head and….
The Boy didn't have a face.
He had the space for a face, but there were no features whatsoever—nothing but pale pink skin pulled tight across the front of his head. At that moment, the image of a wooden art figure came to me.
“What the ever-loving fuck?"
"Want to see something really scary?" the Boy said, his lack of a mouth not stopping him from speaking. He raised himself onto the tips of his fingers and toes and started skittering toward me, laughing as he did.
I clambered out of the crawlspace as fast as my battered body could carry me. I got out of the hole and onto my feet and let out an ear-splitting scream.
The Woman in the blue dress was standing next to the hole in the floor. Like the Boy, she didn't have a face either. But I could feel her eyes on me. Looking into my mind. Into my soul. She stepped toward me, and I bolted for the front door.
I whipped it open and was greeted by Tom standing there, blocking me. He grinned. "Leaving so soon?"
"What the hell is going on?" I asked, checking behind me to see if the Woman was still coming toward me. She was, and she was gaining quickly.
"Can we show our faces now?" he asked with a laugh.
I turned back to Tom and nearly had a heart attack. His face was gone. I could feel my heart beating in my ears. My legs were jelly, but I kept myself propped up. The human desire to survive can perform miracles.
Tom reached out and pointed at a spot on the far side of the living room wall. I turned and saw three skinned human faces hanging from old nails: a man, a woman, and a boy.
"You're turn to join us," Tom whispered. But the voice wasn't said out loud. It came from inside my own head. "We can always use another body around here."
My brain clicked into action and sent an all-points bulletin to my limbs. The message was simple and actionable – "Get the fuck going, you dope."
I felt my hand ball into a fist and spun. It landed where Tom's nose would've been. It should've knocked him back, causing him to stumble and giving me time to run. But that didn't happen. Instead, his face pulled apart, letting my fist slide right through. It closed on my arm, trapping me.
I yanked and yanked, but my arm would not dislodge from his face. I glanced back and saw the Woman nearly next to me. The Boy was climbing out of the hole, moving like a cockroach. I looked back at the wall and saw Tom's hanging face silently laughing.
Something about those silent laughs cut me to my core. They were laughing because Tom thought he had outsmarted me. He had beat me. That my face would soon be hanging on the wall next to theirs. I wasn't going to let that happen.
I saw a loose brick on the walkway, and a plan flashed in my mind. I yanked hard, sending Tom stuttering forward enough for me to wrap my finger around the brick. I brought it up and sent it towards his face. As expected, the face parted again, and the brick flew through easily.
But as soon as the face curtains pulled aside, I yanked my arm free. With my limb free, I took off in a mad sprint for my truck. I got inside and fumbled my keys as I tried to start the engine. Tom, the Woman, and the Boy stood together at the front door and watched as I got the van going and rocketed down the street.
I drove like a madman for ten minutes, trying to put as much space between me and the house as possible. I finally stopped at a gas station to collect my thoughts. I was jittery, and my mind was swimming, but I was also relieved. I had gotten out.
I collected myself and called Denise to tell her I couldn't finish the installation at 981 Maple Street. I was going to suggest we cancel the order and not send another installer there. That's when the conversation took a turn I wasn't expecting.
"Where have you been? You were supposed to be off an hour ago," Denise said when I called her.
"I was trying to finish the install at 981 Maple, the one you sent me to."
"I didn't send you anywhere," she said. "With how insane Rory is being about overtime hours, I'm trying to keep everyone below the threshold."
"What are you talking about? You called and asked me. You don't remember," I said, a bad feeling growing in the pit of my stomach.
She gave me a nervous chuckle, "I swear I didn't. Are you feeling okay? You gotta come back. People are waiting for the van."
"I can prove it. I have a record of you calling me on my phone," I said. I opened my call log, and my jaw dropped. There was no call from Denise. She was telling me the truth. But if she didn't call me, who did?
"Rory wants to talk to you when you get in. I wouldn't mess around, he seems pissed" she said before hanging up.
I haven't moved since. I wanted to write this down because I felt like it needed to be recorded. Something supremely fucked up is happening at 981 Maple Street. It nearly got me. It still might. To think, on any other typical day, a surprise conversation with my boss would be the scariest thing that could happen to me. Funny how seeing a faceless ghoul can prioritize your problems. If you're hired to do work there, turn it down. Trust me, it's not worth it.
"Can we show our faces now?" they asked. "Fuck no," should be the only response.

2024.06.09 19:56 mvppaulo How to install Windows 11 on an Ubuntu version of XPS 9340?

Hello,
I just bought the new XPS 13 9340 with Ubuntu because it's cheaper, and I'm reading different things about installing windows...
I'm used to have a flashed usb key with the Microsoft tool and that's it.
But I've noticed Dell has it's own tool for usb recovery? Should I use this one? dell tool link
Also I've heard about changing bios to raid and removing secure boot. Is that right?
Thanks for your time!

2024.06.09 19:55 ZenBooster block device driver: reading does not work

Kernel: 5.15.0-70-generic.
I used to (parameter is_remap=0) in a similar task, upon receiving an input request bio, I formed my request bioto a higher-level device, and everything worked. But slowly. The writing speed to the flash drive was ~460 kb/sec. Then I decided to forward the request bioto the upstream device directly ( is_remap=1). If you do not try to modify the data, then everything works, and the speed increases to 1.8 Mb/sec, i.e. ~ 4 times. But if you start modifying the data (and this is necessary), then only recording works. When reading, dd receives undecrypted data, and bioin stackbd_end_io_read_cloned(previously cloned using bio_clone_fastin stackbd_io_fn_remap) generally has a zero size. In this case, the size obiois non-zero. How does this even happen, and how to do it right?
It’s interesting that if stackbd_end_io_read_clonedyou change the data after the call bio_endio, then ddthe decrypted data arrives, but I feel that doing this is not correct. Which is confirmed by the fact that fsckafter that mkfsthe system crashes.
For example, I read the sector: user@linux:~/git/stackbd/module$ sudo dd if=/dev/stackbd0 count=1 hexdump -C 00000000 63 d0 18 e5 e3 ee fb a6 ee e9 fc 88 8a a8 a8 88 c............... 00000010 8a 88 88 88 88 70 88 88 98 88 8c 88 88 88 88 88 .....p.......... 00000020 88 48 26 8b 88 b3 88 88 88 88 88 88 8a 88 88 88 .H&............. 00000030 89 88 8e 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 ................ 00000040 08 88 a1 57 55 08 9b c6 c7 a8 c6 c9 c5 cd a8 a8 ...WU........... 00000050 a8 a8 ce c9 dc bb ba a8 a8 a8 86 97 36 ff f4 24 ............6..$ 00000060 aa 48 fc 83 de 3c 86 33 8f 88 45 98 d6 63 78 ba .H...<.3..E..cx. 00000070 6c 45 9e 45 91 63 76 dc e0 e1 fb a8 e1 fb a8 e6 lE.E.cv......... 00000080 e7 fc a8 e9 a8 ea e7 e7 fc e9 ea e4 ed a8 ec e1 ................ 00000090 fb e3 a6 a8 a8 d8 e4 ed e9 fb ed a8 e1 e6 fb ed ................ 000000a0 fa fc a8 e9 a8 ea e7 e7 fc e9 ea e4 ed a8 ee e4 ................ 000000b0 e7 f8 f8 f1 a8 e9 e6 ec 85 82 f8 fa ed fb fb a8 ................ 000000c0 e9 e6 f1 a8 e3 ed f1 a8 fc e7 a8 fc fa f1 a8 e9 ................ 000000d0 ef e9 e1 e6 a8 a6 a6 a6 a8 85 82 88 88 88 88 88 ................ 000000e0 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 ................ * 000001f0 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 88 dd 22 ..............." 1+0 records in 1+0 records out 512 bytes copied, 0,0063565 s, 80,5 kB/s 00000200 user@linux:~/git/stackbd/module$ And this is what I see in the log: kernel: stackbd [task=00000000c60564d5] stackbd_io_fn_remap: HIT.r.1 kernel: debugbd [task=00000000c60564d5] debugbd_submit_bio: debugbd: make request read block 0 #pages 0 total-size 16384 kernel: stackbd [task=00000000c60564d5] stackbd_io_fn_remap: HIT.r.2 kernel: stackbd [task=0000000089abc07d] stackbd_end_io_read_cloned: HIT.1 kernel: stackbd [task=0000000089abc07d] stackbd_end_io_read_cloned: HIT.2: obio.size=16384; bio.size=0 kernel: stackbd [task=0000000089abc07d] stackbd_end_io_read_cloned: HIT.3 kernel: stackbd [task=0000000089abc07d] stackbd_end_io_read_cloned: HIT.4 kernel: stackbd [task=00000000c60564d5] stackbd_io_fn_remap: HIT.r.1 kernel: debugbd [task=00000000c60564d5] debugbd_submit_bio: debugbd: make request read block 32 #pages 0 total-size 32768 kernel: stackbd [task=00000000c60564d5] stackbd_io_fn_remap: HIT.r.2 kernel: stackbd [task=0000000089abc07d] stackbd_end_io_read_cloned: HIT.1 kernel: stackbd [task=0000000089abc07d] stackbd_end_io_read_cloned: HIT.2: obio.size=32768; bio.size=0 kernel: stackbd [task=0000000089abc07d] stackbd_end_io_read_cloned: HIT.3 debugbd is the same driver, but displays information about requests for debugging.

2024.06.09 18:13 Unhappy_Discount_481 So auto start is not responding

So my 2017 autostart is not really working. When I go through the routine lock2x hold down the circle arrow button. My truck receives the signal, (the lights flash) bit zero attempt is made to turn over. The key fob battery is clearly sending the signal since the lights are flashing. The truck is receiving the signal because the lights suggest that. But the attempt to turm over is never made (there is no clicking or any audible sound). Any ideas?

2024.06.09 15:10 John_Swift1 How I passed my SHRM-CP (without the Learning System)

As I was studying for the SHRM-CP exam, I came across several posts on here that were useful in helping me along the process, so I thought I would share some information on how I passed for future test takers. Please note that I did NOT purchase the SHRM Learning System. I studied by myself using free online resources and a few books I bought off Amazon. Prep/Study Time
I studied for about 4–5 weeks. On weekdays I studied between 1–3 hours per day, on the weekends I would do 4–6 hours per day, and during the last 7–10 days, I studied about 4–6 hours per day. Of course, I took a few nights off here and there as well. Keep in mind that you may need to study more or less given your work experience (I have a Master’s in I/O Psych and about 2 years of relevant work experience). To be honest, I wish I had started studying 2–3 weeks earlier. I would recommend giving yourself at least 1.5–2 months to prepare for this exam.
Resources:
1) SHRM BoCK — This is a free PDF that you can download off the SHRM website. I used this resource to guide my overall learning. I dissected the entire document and made flashcards on Quizlet for everything I did not know. In particular, I focused on the “key concepts” for each section and made sure I knew the definition of each term. There is also a glossary of terms and definitions at the end of the document, so I added all those terms into Quizlet as well. The glossary does not have every definition you will need to know, but it’s a good start. For the terms I could not find a definition for, I would either
A) Google it
B) see how the SHRM website defines it,
C) use one of my other resources to find a definition
D) go to Youtube to learn more.
2) SHRM-CP Exam by certexamdb Test Prep: You can find in here
I explored a few different practice exams, but this was by far the most useful. You cannot use this as your only resource, but it is a great start.
3) PHSPHR Professional in Human Resources Certification Study Guide by Anne Bogardus: You can actually find a PDF of this online for free. At some point throughout the study process (usually after a practice exam), you will likely realize that you need to go into more depth with certain concepts. This is where this study guide comes in. I didn’t read it word for word, but I spent a few hours skimming through it, went through some of the practice questions at the end of each chapter, and read in detail certain sections that I was weak on. This resource is very detailed but not too complicated which is great. I would highly recommend allocating 1–2 study days just for going through this resource. Keep in mind that it will provide you with more detail than you need, but you can just focus on the concepts that are relevant to the SHRM-CP.
4) SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP Certification Practice Exams (All in One) by Kelly and Simon-Walters. About 10 days before my exam, I came across this resource which consisted of 500 questions that were broken down into each of the sections outlined in the SHRM BoCK. When I took the practice exam in the certexamdb Test Prep I scored terribly on the situational judgment questions. This book is GREAT for preparing you for those questions. Just keep in mind two things when using this resource:
It will consist of some questions with terms or concepts that you did not come across in any of the other resources — you can just ignore those (it’s extra information that you do not necessarily need), (2) the quick answer key has some inaccuracies (ignore it) but the answer key with detailed explanations is correct so make sure you use that when scoring yourself. Make sure you answer both the SHRM-CP and the SHRM-SCP questions (they are both relevant). This really helps with the situational judgment questions, but also with knowing how some of the terms and definitions apply in a real setting. When focusing on these questions, I realized that I had memorized some definitions, but I still didn’t know how to apply those concepts. This book helps with that.
5) Quizlet Flashcards created by other people — A lot of people have created quizlet sets (even from the Learning System) that they have uploaded. Those are free, so make sure you use them! Also, some people have even created practice sets for exam questions (which I think are from the learning system as well), so make sure you review those as well! Basic Study Tips: Unfortunately, without the Learning System, there is no single resource that you can use to prepare for this exam. Therefore, make sure you use a few resources just to make sure you get exposed to most of the material that will be on the exam. As you go through each resource, keep revising your flashcards and adding new ones. Make sure you periodically review flashcards as you go rather than waiting to cram everything in a week before the exam. When you go through practice questions, you will soon realize that you often need to know more than just the definition… you need to know when and how something applies as well. For example, you need to know what FMLA is, but you also need to know what the eligibility criteria is, when it is applicable, etc… I had one massive set of flashcards (about 500), and then I also had smaller sets of flashcards for some sections (e.g., a set for HR Laws, another set for Finance/Accounting terms). I would memorize using the smaller sets, but then I went through the giant set I had created a few days before my exam to make sure I knew everything. Do a ton of practice questions and understand why you got certain questions wrong.
6) SHRM LMS Books
Here’s a quick overview of the step-by-step process I took to study and prepare:
  1. Go through SHRM-BoCK and create flashcards
  2. Go through and memorize SHRM Learning System Flashcards (You can find these on Quizlet and search “SHRM Learning System”)
  3. Take certexamdb Test Prep Practice Exam, review, and identify weak areas.
  4. Go through the Bogardus PHSPHR book and focus on weak areas (fill in flashcards)
  5. Memorize the newly created flashcards for weak areas, flag ones that you continually get wrong or confused with.
  6. YouTube hazy concepts and terms to gain a richer understanding, use Khan Academy when applicable.
  7. Retake certexamdb Practice Exam
  8. Go through questions in the book by Kelly and Simon-Walters
  9. Identify weak areas, read through explanations, create and memorize flash cards as needed
  10. A few days before my exam, focus on my large stack of flashcards, go through other people’s flashcard sets, and go through practice exams on Quizlet.
Exam Experience and Takeaways
I finished the exam in a little over three hours. You get no breaks, but you can always take them as needed. Time is likely not going to be an issue. Here are some takeaways that I had about the exam: — There were surprisingly few questions on US Employment Laws & Regulations and Labor Unions. I spent a lot on these sections when studying, but there were not many questions at all on these topics. — The test questions were different than any of the practice exams I had taken (however you should be fine as long as you know the material) — The situational judgment questions can be exhausting with having to read 2–3 paragraphs for each 2–3 questions. — Make sure you carefully read the question. For example, you are often asked “what is the first step you would take” or “what strategy would you use.” These can be tricky, but they can also easily reveal the right answer. — No matter how hard you study, you will encounter a few questions where you come across terms that you’re unfamiliar with and you will have to guess blindly. Just try to eliminate what you do know is wrong and take your best guess. Don’t stress too much about it. — Use the highlight, strike through, and flagging options during the exam. It helps a lot. — Often, the correct answers for the situational judgment questions have something to do with (1) getting leadership buy-in, (2) having HR be a strategic partner, (3) making sure the action is aligned with the org’s mission and vision (4) HR being proactive, (5) doing a needs assessment of some sort, (6) having HR be some sort of facilitator.

2024.06.09 14:40 _Alex0001 How to update BIOS after fully build the PC ?

Hello,
Today, my girlfriend set up her new PC herself (with me on call, not having the possibility of helping her on site).
How to update BIOS after PC is fully mounted?
She has a Ryzen 7 7800X3D on a B650 Eagle AX.
I tell her to download the F30 BIOS, put it on a USB key after extraction, plug it into the USB port marked "BIOS", then press the Q-Flash Plus button. But apparently, nothing happens, except the BOOT LED lit for a while, then the DRAM LED, without anything more.

The heat and the pressure are on—for our planet, and for one more World War.
Last Week in Collapse: June 2-8, 2024
This is Last Week in Collapse, a weekly newsletter compiling some of the most important, timely, useful, soul-crushing, ironic, stunning, exhausting, or otherwise must-see/can’t-look-away moments in Collapse.
This is the 128th newsletter. You can find the May 26-June edition here if you missed it last week. You can also receive these posts (with images) every Sunday in your email inbox with Substack.

Bengaluru broke a 133-year rain record by almost 10mm last Sunday, with 111mm (4.37 inches) of rain falling in a single day. In Sri Lanka, some 24,000 people were displaced by recent flooding. A heat wave swept through the southwest United States and northern Mexico. Part of Niger already broke its June temperature record. Parts of New South Wales, Australia broke nighttime temperatures as well; so did the Philippines, and Vietnam. And a heat wave in Greece.
Atmospheric blocking” happens when regions of the atmosphere remain stationary for days or weeks, imposing similar weather on a region for a while. A study released in Nature Communications looked at Svalbard, which is warming faster than the Arctic, which is itself warming faster than most of the rest of the planet. The researchers claim that atmospheric blocking has resulted in warmer & wetter conditions in Svalbard, which is driving its ice loss. “The augmented blocking in the Ural and Scandinavian regions in the future combined with the projected declines in sea ice, and increases in sea surface temperatures and moisture availability, will likely increase the magnitude and frequency of exceptional rainfall incidents similar to the 2016 occurrence, posing further hazards to the population and ecosystems in Svalbard.”
A paywalled study in Nature Climate Change emphasizes “in the absence of a global tipping point there is no safety margin within which permafrost loss would be acceptable.” The summary states that permafrost melt does not have a worldwide tipping point, but rather several local temperature thresholds. Permafrost worldwide is expected to be all melted once global temperature gains hit 5 or 6 °C.
We are currently in the brief neutral period between El Niño and La Niña, expected to begin around August. Meteorologists expect temperatures in the eastern Pacific to decline for between 1 and 3 years—and for stronger Atlantic hurricanes. A 14-page report from the WMO forecasts a particularly wet summer for Central America.
Monsoon storms in Sri Lanka killed 14, mostly by falling trees, though others drowned or were covered by landslides. Texas saw “canteloupe-size hail” fall during a freak tornado; some think it is a record size for the region. Experts say some 23% of Africa’s land has been degraded, by five major factors: 1) invasive species, 2) climate change, including Drought and flooding, 3) resource extraction, 4) deforestation, and 5) pollution, including algal blooms. Poverty, population growth, and resource dependencies have aggravated the problem, says the article.
In Kashmir, a glacier Collapsed, sending three plunging into the ice, one of whom has still not been found. In the Philippines, a volcanic mud landslide swept into a village; volcano alerts were raised to 2 (on a 0-5 scale). Rising sea levels are displacing residents of one of Panama’s islands (pop: ~1,200); others will follow. Greece is gearing up for a fierce wildfire season ahead. And, in a moment of hopeful news, Sweden is banning bottom trawling in its “marine protected areas.”
In the EU, early polling appears to show a “greenlash,”, a backlash to the Green Alliance—and perhaps a loss of some 30% of their 72 current seats in the EU Parliament (705 total). Some blame the “moral superiority complex” of Greens, while others believe it is their lack of compromise on important issues. Farmer protests also damaged Green sentiment; now future sweeping climate reforms will probably have to wait years to get passed, since conservatives are expected to make gains. Most results will emerge within 24 hours of this post.
Worldwide, 39% of environmental journalists have faced threats due to their reporting—according to a 112-page report by the Earth Journalism Network. Most of the threats came to reporters writing about illegal extraction operations.
Roughly 20% of sealife near the surface is expected to face a “triple threat” of climate hazards: extreme heat, oxygen loss and acidification. Some of these species will die in place; others will be forced into progressively smaller living spaces. Most of the danger lies in the northern Pacific. The full study in AGU Advances has more.
The UN Secretary-General announced that we are on the “highway to climate hell.” And we aren’t wearing any seatbelts. The EU Copernicus Programme says last May was the hottest on record. This means the last 12 months were the hottest on record, with each consecutive month setting a new monthly record. Our planet is supposedly on the edge of 1.5 °C temperature increase, but some think we’ve already surpassed it.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released a 27-page report, “Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update 2024-2028,” predicting short-term temperatures exceeding the 1.5 °C mark.
“The global mean near-surface temperature for each year between 2024 and 2028 is predicted to be between 1.1°C and 1.9°C higher than the average over the years 1850-1900. It is likely (80% chance) that global mean near-surface temperature will exceed 1.5°C above the 1850-1900 average levels for at least one year between 2024 and 2028. It is about as likely as not (47%) that the five-year mean will exceed this threshold….Arctic warming over the next five extended winters (November to March), relative to the average of the 1991-2020 period, is predicted to be more than three times as large as the warming in global mean temperature. Predicted precipitation patterns for 2024, relative to the 1991-2020 average, suggest an increased chance of low rainfall over North-East Brazil and an increased chance of wet conditions in the African Sahel, consistent with the warmer-than-usual temperatures in the North Atlantic….
The Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy released its 2024 Environmental Policy Index, and the 204 pages illustrate the state of sustainability in 180 countries, according to 58 indicators. The document, full of useful graphics and accessible summaries, presents a world in escalating danger of global heating, pollution, and biodiversity loss. It is well worth skimming. These kinds of climate reports usually seem to me like, overall, much more time was spent making them than people spend reading them…
“Only five countries — Estonia, Finland, Greece, Timor-Leste, and the United Kingdom — cut their GHG emissions at the rate needed to reach zero by 2050….After climate change, biodiversity loss has emerged as the most serious and irreversible environmental crisis….As of 2022, aggregated GHG emissions were falling in 60 countries but still rising in 128…. Human activities, namely the combustion of fossil fuels, of which CO2 is an inevitable byproduct, have caused a nearly 50 percent of the increase in CO2 levels in the atmosphere since the industrial revolution, with atmospheric concentration surpassing 426 parts per million in April 2024 — a level higher than at any point in human history….China, the United States, and India are pivotal, accounting for over half of global GHG emissions…China used more cement in two years (2020 and 2021) than the United States did in the entire twentieth century….Air pollution remains the most serious environmental threat to public health. Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter less than 2.5 µm in diameter (PM2.5) caused 7.8 million premature deaths in 2021, close to 12 percent of global deaths…” -selections from the first third of the report

Mexico saw its first human case of a bird flu strain, H5N2, in a dead man supposedly with no known previous exposure to animals. Two turkey farms got outbreaks in Minnesota, and Iowa’s first dairy farm reported bird flu as well. American health authorities expect H5N1 human cases to rise in the coming weeks. Bird flu was also found in San Francisco last week. Millions of human vaccine doses for bird flu are being prepared for the United States this summer.
Citigroup says the United States is already in a recession, though other institutions disagree. Nevertheless, junk bonds are becoming even more junky, and economists agree that the economy is at least slowing down. Credit card debt is reportedly rising, and the “personal savings rate” has dropped to pre-COVID levels. “America’s debt accumulation over the last seven years is akin to the costs of a world war,” says the article. Cuts to the Federal Reserve interest rate are coming, and the rise of tariffs is unlikely to stop soon. And Europe’s strongest economy, Germany, is not seeing a strong recovery from last year’s recession.
Thousands are starving in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, where Drought and school dropouts have also worsened. Investigators claim in a new report that both sides in the Tigray War committed grave war crimes and “acts of genocide” in the conflict, which ended (on paper, anyway) in November 2022; intercommunal violence continues at a lower intensity.
The American Heart Association released a report projecting the rates of heart illnesses by 2050, and they believe the rate of hypertension among adults will rise from about 51% in 2020 to 61% in 2060. Diabetes rates are expected to jump from about 16% in 2020 to almost 27% in 2050; and obesity rates will expand 17% to over 60%... A number of other heart conditions are expected to worsen as well, though at least high cholesterol rates are expected to decrease.
A 12-page report by Oil Change International says what we all know: most nations are failing to meet climate targets. “Some G7 countries are massively expanding fossil fuel production at home, while others are investing in more fossil fuel infrastructure abroad.” China is, far and away, adding more renewable energy capacity than any other nations on earth, supposedly adding “over 90% of all renewable capacity mentioned in NDCs {nationally determined contributions}” in the 2020s so far.
The U.S. FDA has unanimously recommended a new vaccine be developed to address the JN.1 COVID variant. Vaccine-manufacturers say that a new vaccine could arrive as early as mid-August. A 242-page prepublication report on the long-term dangers of Long COVID, with a view to planning future impacts on Social Security.
“Even individuals with a mild initial course of illness can develop Long COVID with severe health effects….Women are twice as likely as men to experience Long COVID….Long COVID can cause more than 200 symptoms and affects each person differently….There currently is no curative treatment for Long COVID itself. Management of the condition is based on current knowledge about treating the associated health effects and other sequelae….Long COVID symptoms generally improve over time, although preliminary studies suggest that recover can plateau 6-12 months after acute infection. Studies have shown that only 18-22 percent of those who have persistent symptoms at 5-6 months following infection have fully recovered by 1 year. Among those who do not improve, most remain stable, but some worsen.” -selections from the study summary
Germany reported African swine flu in some pigs in the northeast. Monkeypox cases remain in the United States, and at higher rates than last year, despite waning media coverage. And four strains of dengue fever, yes four, are still sweeping through Brazil with no end in sight.
A number of current & former employees at OpenAI are warning of the careless pursuit of dominance of the artificial intelligence arena—and the supposed 70% chance that AI could bring about “doom” for humanity. Some of the computer scientists believe that a general intelligence (AGI) could arrive as soon as 2027—a generation earlier than previous estimates of roughly 2050. "The world isn’t ready, and we aren’t ready," said one dissenting researcher.
——————————
The intervention into Haiti is almost ready to go, but gangsters in Haiti have escalated attacks against police in advance of the Kenya-led operation, set to begin in a week or two. “The gangs are just waiting for the Kenyans, they’re just cracking their knuckles and stretching out.…It’s going to be a battle if not a bloodbath of a war, because the gangs are ready,” said one ex-diplomat. A new PM has been installed, Garry Conille, a guy who previously served as PM for 4 about months in 2011-2012. Gangs vying for power control roughly 80% of Port-Au-Prince; will they remain fragmented upon the arrival of an outside coalition, or make an alliance of convenience to oppose police intervention?
Although New Caledonia’s state of emergency has ended, over $1B of damage has been wrought by rioters opposing an expansion of voting rights. Analysts say that the Pacific island’s abundant nickel reserves—essential for France’s renewable energy push—have seen their extraction obstructed by recent events. A curfew remains in place, and social cohesion has been seriously damaged by the protests and the central government’s reactions.
President Biden issued new orders restricting the flow of migrants and asylum-seekers at the Mexico border. At the U.S./Canada border, migrant arrivals have spiked 1000%+ in the last 3 years. Days before the EU election, Portugal instituted stronger controls over immigration. On the Poland/Belarus border, a Polish soldier died, after being stabbed by a migrant from Belarus.
Georgia’s controversial foreign agents bill has been signed into law despite strong protests from the masses. Some call the law a form of Russian hybrid warfare, though Russia contends that allowing foreign media funding functions as a kind of anti-Russian hybrid warfare on its own.
South Korea suspended a military agreement with North Korea over their waste balloons sent into the South. This will result in a more militarized border, outside the DMZ, in the coming months. President Putin is also planning a visit to Pyongyang, which has been long-supplying materiel to Russia for use in Ukraine. A border clash between Chinese and Indian forces took place in their contested mountains—using only sticks and stones.
Conditions in Gaza are said to be “beyond crisis levels” for the 1M+ people who have been displaced from Rafah, as the Israeli advance continues—despite calls from the ICJ to halt the operation. “The sounds, the smells, the everyday life, are horrific and apocalyptic,” said one observer. Killings in the West Bank have now exceeded 500 since October 7, and aid deliveries have sunk 65%+ since the Rafah offensive began. A strike on a school killed 45 people sheltering there, according to Gaza officials. In the coastal settlement of al-Mawasi, where many IDPs moved after the Rafah invasion began, toilets are so scarce that over 4,000 people share a single latrine.
The battlefield is expanding; in some ways, it has always been all-encompassing, and it’s only now that the world is re-learning it. Ukraine has sent soldiers to Syria to fight Wagner Group mercenaries operating in the failed state. Ukraine had earlier intervened in Sudan to combat Russian forces operating in the country. Ukraine also struck an air defense unit inside Russia for the first time, marking another escalation in the War. Russia struck Ukraine’s largest hydroelectric power plant in Dnipro, which is now in “critical condition.” Russia reportedly intends to restart the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant at some point, though international regulators argue that it would be unsafe to turn Europe’s largest nuclear facility online while War still rages around it. Half of Ukraine’s electrical generation has been taken offline. Although weapons are reaching Ukraine’s frontlines, they are not enough to change the tide of the War—and are still outnumbered by Russian soldiers & munitions. Ukraine is also crowd-sourcing 3D-printing drone parts to support their drone fleets—a key part of future modern warfare.
Russia also claims that French military instructors within Ukraine present a lawful military target for Russian forces—and an opportunity to start WWIII. But others believe the flashpoint may come from elsewhere—Taiwan, or the unfolding Israel/Hamas/Hezbollah/Iran conflict, which are intensifying on the Lebanon/Israel border. Russia is also taking over Niger’s uranium reserves, once held by a French corporation. And four Russian sea vessels will be visiting Cuba—but not carrying nuclear weapons.
Around Sudan’s capital, looters, checkpoints, and violence have been established. Several torture chambers have been discovered, and the smell of death hangs in the air of a few neighborhoods, contested by both sides. The number of displaced people is approaching 10M. Russia is supposedly playing both sides to its advantage. “All over Sudan, people are going hungry because they have lost everything, the economy has collapsed, and armed men frequently steal what little aid is available,” said one reporter. The insurgent RSF forces are said to not only be fighting for the future, but fighting over history as well. The National Museum has become a cemetery for RSF fighters. University archives have been burned. And ancient artifacts have been cleared out, sold to mysterious buyers, stashed away in unknown places, or simply destroyed… Other horror stories are still emerging; this article details some of the worst recent tales in the War.
One major NATO supplies provider claims that a decade of arms accumulation is coming, to replenish stockpiles given to Ukraine and in advance of a potential open War between China and whatever western nations decide to participate. China announced its intention to detain vessels moving into its alleged national waters near the Philippines—and presumably to sink those which resist. Ukraine used up six years’ worth of shoulder-fired missiles, like javelins, in just one year. The development of the F-35 will exceed $2T, although the U.S. military is planning on using it less than previously expected. NATO is also planning its rapid-transit troop corridors through Europe to the expected frontlines of a potential open War against Russia.

Select comments/threads from the subreddit last week suggest:
-It is a common refrain that the education system is a bellwether for Collapse. It is also a symbol—alongside our food system, plastic dependency, state militaries, and many other institutions—of how difficult it apparently is to change course. The institutional friction and incentives are burnt in. This detailed post on the (American) school system and the “metacrisis” and much more. Several thorough comments build on the OP’s thesis. Peek into teachers for a glimpse into our doomed future.
-People in southern California are evidently closing their eyes and ears to Collapse, if this weekly observation is to be believed. The author writes about their unfulfilled hope that humanity might turn the ship around during the COVID period, cognitive biases, the persistence of COVID denial, plastics, and the early burning sun.
-Society is closing in on a Doom-Awakening, says the comments on this post. Some disagree (see the above observation).
-Nothing works, and everything is breaking—say many terrific comments in this self-post about the lack of empathy, passion, quality products, and the atrocious job market.

2024.06.09 14:25 ashmatica Episode 1 - Act I

We awake immersed in water, but it tastes somehow wrong. There's a current, agentle, pulling sensation, and we instinctively allow ourselves to go with it. Our eyes focus for what seems like the first time in... longer than we can remember.
The water ends at an invisible barrier and the current tugs us along it. A word comes to us –window. There are windows on one... two, three, four sides, out of… six. We're in a... tank.
The words seem strange. The idea of a word itself seems strange – an alien concept describing an alien concept. We don't feel right. Sensations and awareness flood into us, fill us, threatening to overwhelm us. We’re aware that we’re aware. And there’s something else to worry about too –beyond the water, beyond thew indows, another alien phenomenon, that we somehow understand we shouldfear:
Fire.
The light around us changes rhythmically; it has a quality unfamiliar to us, then doesn’t, has that quality, then doesn’t– over and over. The quality is a colour – red. We don’t know if we’ve ever seen a colour like this before, yet somehow we know what we’re looking at. A loud tone sounds in time with the rhythm, demanding attention. Something falls from above, hitting the tank and causing jagged cracks to shear across our view of the flames beyond. Bright dots – sparks – spray into the air. They are yellow.
The reds and yellows seem to warn us that whatever is happening out there can't be good for us.
We follow the cracks downward, finding where the light the window transmits is most disjointed. Then we swarm either side of the crack, and pull. The crack widens and water begins spewing faster out onto featureless ground – a floor – beyond. This gap is much smaller than us, but that's not a problem. We know what to do. This, at least, is familiar.
We stretch, compress, squeeze, expand – flowing one arm at a time through the opening, in mimicry of the water itself, onto the floor. We relish this small challenge and splash triumphantly when all of us have escaped the tank. On this side there is air. It tastes unusual, and yet, of nothing.
There is no sea in this air. There is nothing of anything.
More sparks hiss and shower, and new lights begin to flash. The new lights are also red but are accompanied by a tone of a different frequency. How many sources of alarm must we wake to?
Alarm.
Yes, the noises do signify alarm – they are alarms. There is an elegance in these ideas, or maybe a logic. But what is logic? And from where did it come?
As we struggle to understand how it is that we seem to understand, part of a wall ahead moves. It begins folding down towards us, a giant limb of unnatural construction, jointed like a crawler rather thana swimmer. Now a new sound arises, complex yet coherent. It make new words, but these aren't in ourmind. These words are in the air itself.
'Warning. Containment failure. Subject escaping. Recapture protocols initiated.'
We know what the words mean, but we don't have time to consider the abstract concepts they imply. The construction, a mechanical device of some sort, lunges towards us. We yank ourselves aside and it snaps closed where we were, reorients and comes at us again. It's fast, and our body seems slow, unfamiliar in all its responses. This time the thing snares us by one limb, raising us up off the floor. We flail around, curling around the thing's jaws, trying to wrench them apart. Two of our arms strain at our attacker, but make no difference to our attempts to escape... nor do three, nor four... but when our fifth limb – the second on our left – curls around the device, it only has to flex once and our captor snaps apart, sending usto the floor with a wet slap.
Our broken attacker jerks uselessly overhead as we study our own victorious arm. It's only slightly larger than our others, but clearly much more mighty.
But there isn't time to wonder at our body for long. The floor is vibrating strangely under us, the fire spreading, the air filling with dark, particulate matter. Smoke. The wall to our left looks different, functional. It's a solid plane, designed to be passed through. A door. This makes no sense to us – why block passage with a door, if a door’s function is to allow passage?
There's something on the wall beside it – a control panel. We slip across the floor to it, wondering again how we know all this. While most of us flail at the panel, wondering how to use it, one arm – the one immediately opposite the mighty one – unerringly pokes at a glyph on the panel, and the door slides open with a soft noise.
'Good job, p...' we begin.
But this stuns us into silence.
Words.
But this time words we are emitting ourself, forced out with air, pushed out of the siphon we use to pump water. We can pump words into the very air...
We can talk.
But this is something we'll have to wonder about later, along with how we know what it means to do a good job. For now there's fire and alarms to worry about. We slip through the door, only to be confronted with more mysteries – for in the next room there is another tank.
'Another tank,' we say. 'Another tank another tank another tank another tank.'
Words!
This tank is more severely damaged than the one in which we awoke. The glass is shattered and the floor more deeply flooded, and amongst the shattered fragments lies a creature we recognise. It's a dolphin. We don't think we ever called it a 'dolphin' before, but that's what it is. It's clearly dead, or unconscious, so we leave it and move on through the next door, using our pokey limb to access the controls again.
In the chamber beyond we discover a shark, floating belly-up in a more intact tank.
The rooms, we realise, are small self-contained chambers, each containing a single occupant. When we reach the next chamber we discover that not all of these occupants are aquatic – there is a four-limbed creature there that we somehow identify as a boar, and its tank is filled with a liquid more viscous than water. The boar's belly moves slowly as we watch, rising and falling. It is suspended with cables and wires. We think of releasing it, but then wonder what purpose that would serve. We can't eat it, juggle it or carry it, and it is clearly not awake.
We move on, slithering rapidly to the next door. The chamber beyond has a spider monkey in it, and the one beyond that a capybara. Then there is a jaguar, and then a human. The human's chamber is different to the others –there is a small subsection that contains fabrics itmust once have worn, and some small personal items we can identify: a data device called a phone, a stylus called a pen, credit tokens called coins and unique-access keys called cards, hygienic blotters called tissues, a utility container called a purse, and a printed current-affairs data medium called a newspaper, which is entitled Saturday Gazette.
This title is made of words too, but these ones are very different. We can see these ones, right there in front of us. Words that exist not in our mind or as sounds in the air, but on the substance of the newspaper itself. Words that can be seen, that look like... Well, that look like words. Abstract markings on a surface.
'Huh,' we think, and the corresponding noise comes from our siphon. Things are starting to make more sense now. We raise one of our arms and think, “Saturday Gazette”. Our skin mottles and changes, as if we were trying to hide against the newspaper, and it darkens in an elongated pattern. The pattern is blurry, but is words: “Saturday Gazette”.
A few of our arms slap on the floor excitedly and we look back at the tank, tracking our eyes across the newspaper. The words under the title seem to relate an event, and images come to us as we read them... Images that don't appear in front of us like the words on the newspaper, but are elsewhere in our mind, like the images of a dream.
The images are of a cat, which seems like a smaller version of the jaguar in the last chamber. The cat is helpless in the limbs of a tree, which is a shaggy mass of green up high on the land where we don't like to go. We can't imagine what the limbs of a tree might be, but we have an idea that they are solid and dark and branch from each other... in fact the word 'branch' is there on the newspaper before us, so we think we might have the right idea.
The words relate to us how the cat was rescued from the tree by men and women made of fire. This seems sort of terrifying, but maybe cats have less to fear from flames than we do. We consider going back to the jaguar, but our attention is diverted when the background noise of the alarms is muted somewhat, and audible words sound over them.
'Warning,’ the words say. ‘Orbit unstable. Contact with planetary atmosphere has begun decelerating ship. Safe egress using escape pods will no longer be viable when this countdown terminates. [547.546.545...]'

I drive a 2020 Passat. I was driving my car all day yesterday with no issues. I came home & parked. About 40 minutes later I went to start my car (push button) & there was a bit of a delay but the car started. I moved to a different parking spot, parked & turned the car off.
As I was turning the car off a red indicator began flashing and beeping on my dashboard “steering lock faulty!” then within a few minutes another message “move steering wheel”. So I tried to start the car because I thought maybe my wheel had locked in a weird position, idk but the car wouldn’t start. Whenever I get in the car or try to start it the “steering lock faulty” message beeps & flashes. I’ve tried turning the wheel while pressing the start button, nothing.
I’ve had this car less than two years & I can’t afford a repair like this. A friend thinks it might be a simple key fob issue (chips got deprogrammed) but I have no clue. I’ve tried holding the fob on the little fob pad while pressing the start button & nothing.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be or know how to fix it on my own?

2024.06.09 13:45 minikelzke My father had a stroke, what happened? And what sort of recovery is to be expected?

On Friday morning, my father had a stroke. No one was with him at the time and I'm not sure if my dad realised what had happened. He spoke with a friend online and she noticed that he sounded different. She called him again the next day and he sounded worse. She eventually contacted me and I called for an ambulance. By this time, he was already experiencing weakness and disorientation, as well as trouble speaking.
I spoke with him over the phone and could barely understand a word. After a while, he was moved to a major hospital for a clot retrieval surgery. Hours later, I received an update that the surgery was over. The doctor told me that my father had had a stroke, caused by a clot in his brain and that due to the complex location of the clot that they hadn't been able to fully retrieve it, but had retrieved some. They told me that he was considered stable.
During my visit the next day, they told me that they had concerns about dysphasia and that my father has 'right-side neglect'. When I spoke with him, his left leg and arm seemed to experience spasms, his left leg kicking up at random and his left hand reaching around almost blindly. He was unable to look me in the eye, and kept coughing, straining and choking, attempting to bring up something in his chest. Before this, my father was frail but determined. The biggest chatterbox. The person I spoke to for hours on the phone. During my visit, he mumbles and tried to speak with me, but I couldn't understand. He seemed to hear me, and when I spoke with him, would become quiet so he could listen, but struggled to articulate his words. He seemed to be repeating things and his face is now asymmetrical, with one side drooping. His machine kept going crazy, beeping and flashing red whenever he tried to speak. He has high blood pressure, from what I could see from the machine.
The doctors talked like he wasn't even there, but I know he is. He still listens and talks. Tries his best to get the words out and tell me that he loves me and that he will see me soon.
I guess that I'm posting because I want to prepare myself. I'm being bombarded with so many different opinions from family members and as the person that may need to step up to carry on his future medical responsibilities, I'm struggling to keep myself together. I want to be practical, and understand to the fullest extent, how I can best help my father and what to expect in the coming months.
My dad has had previous health problems. In 2018, he was diagnosed with vegetation on the heart and needed surgery. He was fitted with a new synthetic heart valve and a pace maker.
He has a hernia from the surgery. The doctors told me today that due to this surgery, he should have been on blood thinners but I am not certain of if he has been taking them and wasn't even aware of the prescription (my dad doesn't like to worry people).
Last year, my dad experienced two seizures, in which the doctors were unable to diagnose. Since then, he has been weak and experiencing issues with his balance. He has told me of a few times where he has stumbled forward and been unable to keep himself from falling.
My dad has also been following a diet called the 'carnivore diet' to the extreme. In the last 12-6 months, he has been neglecting fruits and vegetables entirely and eating wholly meat, eggs and dairy, cooking his foods in animal fat and butter. The last time that we had a conversation over the phone we got into an argument about it. I wanted him to get a blood test, but he refused. He didn't want to be told that his cholesterol might be high.
The last time that I saw him was a few weeks ago. He looked small and frail and seemed forgetful. He forgot my name (but he sometimes does this, getting confused with me and my distant sister) but also seemed to have trouble remembering key events. He had expressed to me previously that he was having trouble remembering things (more-so-than-usual) but it seemed particularly bad this day. I didn't speak to him (asides from over text) until the night of the incident. That night, he told me that he was having trouble texting, which I can attest to as he sent me an emoji and the word 'IN' randomly over text.
I am currently waiting for a call from the social worker and speech pathologist in the hospital but I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I'm going crazy.
My dad is a proud man. A German immigrant that moved to Australia due to the violence over the Berlin Wall. He is a man that has sacrificed EVERYTHING for his family. Humble as he uses his bones to build a staircase to heaven for his loved ones. He is unique and stubborn, and strong. Stronger than anyone. The nurses at the ward told me that they can hear him straining and groaning as he tries to will his right arm into moving. He's an amazing person. Imperfect but admirable. At least to me.
I'm getting so much information tossed at me. Opinions of what to do. Anger of what happened. Questions that I can't answer. I want to prepare myself. I need to. Dad is going to try his hardest and so am I.
If anyone can try to use this information to help me, I will be eternally grateful. What can I expect? What is the likelihood of recovery? What do I need to organise? Who should I be speaking to? How can I ensure my dad gets the best care possible? If anyone could please shed a light on some of these questions, I think that I could sleep a little easier.
Thank you
