2024.05.16 10:30 Pigik83 The Lab #48: Scraping with AWS Lambda

Hey folks! 🚀 Diving into the world of web scraping, I've discovered the powerhouse that AWS Lambda functions can be for this purpose. These nifty little functions provide a serverless solution that not only saves costs but also simplifies the deployment process. Imagine being able to execute code in response to events, without the hassle of managing a server environment. AWS takes care of the infrastructure so we can focus solely on our code and configurations.
I've been playing around with deploying these Lambda functions, and using Serverless has made the process a breeze, significantly flattening the learning curve, especially when incorporating tools like Selenium. But here's a heads up—since AWS data center IPs are pretty noticeable, they tend to get blocked by the websites we might be scraping. The workaround? Masking these IPs with a proxy service can save the day.
And for an extra spoonful of flexibility, you can pass a URL directly as a parameter when invoking the function. It's like telling your Lambda function exactly where to go and what to do with minimal fuss.
In a nutshell, it's been a thrilling journey untangling the potentials of AWS Lambda for web scraping projects. The blend of serverless architecture and event-driven execution opens up a realm of possibilities, as long as we keep those sneaky blocking issues in check with a good proxy. 🕵️‍♂️✨

2024.05.16 08:50 Frequent_Buy2431 Adapting to University Life: Tips for International Students

Embarking on the journey of university life can be both exhilarating and challenging, especially for international students. Stepping into a new cultural environment, navigating academic expectations, and finding your place in a sea of unfamiliar faces can seem daunting at first. However, with the right mindset and strategies, adapting to university life can become a fulfilling and enriching experience. Here are some invaluable tips to help international students thrive in their new academic setting.

Embrace Diversity and Cultivate Connections

One of the most enriching aspects of university life is the opportunity to interact with people from diverse backgrounds. Embrace this diversity wholeheartedly, as it offers a chance to learn about different cultures, perspectives, and traditions. Engage in student clubs, multicultural events, and community activities to build connections and foster friendships. These connections can provide a support network during challenging times and enhance your overall university experience.

Develop Effective Time Management Skills

University life demands a delicate balance between academics, extracurricular activities, and personal commitments. International students, in particular, may find themselves juggling additional responsibilities such as language barriers and cultural adjustments. Developing effective time management skills is crucial for staying on top of coursework and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Utilize tools such as planners, calendars, and time-blocking techniques to organize your schedule and prioritize tasks efficiently.

Seek Academic Support and Resources

Navigating the academic landscape of a new university can be overwhelming, but remember that you're not alone. Take advantage of the various academic support services and resources offered by your institution. Whether it's tutoring programs, writing centers, or academic advising, these resources are designed to help students succeed. Additionally, don't hesitate to reach out to professors or classmates for clarification or assistance with course materials.

Familiarize Yourself with Technology and Learning Platforms

In today's digital age, technology plays a vital role in education. Familiarize yourself with the learning management systems and digital tools used by your university, such as online libraries, lecture capture software, and collaboration platforms. Being proficient in these technologies will not only streamline your academic workflow but also enhance your overall learning experience.

Understand the Importance of Academic Integrity

Maintaining academic integrity is paramount in university settings. Familiarize yourself with the academic policies and expectations regarding plagiarism, citing sources, and collaboration on assignments. While seeking assistance is encouraged, it's essential to uphold ethical standards and submit original work. Remember, academic integrity is not only about following rules but also about preserving the integrity of your education and personal integrity.

Leveraging Homework Help Services for Academic Success

Among the challenges international students may face, grappling with complex subjects like database management could be particularly daunting. Databases are foundational to many fields, including computer science, business, and information technology. Understanding their principles and applications is crucial for academic success. However, if you find yourself struggling with database assignments, don't hesitate to seek Database Homework Help.
Database management involves organizing, storing, and retrieving data efficiently—a task that requires both theoretical understanding and practical skills. Homework help services specializing in database management can provide invaluable support, offering guidance, clarification, and assistance with assignments. Whether you're grappling with SQL queries, database design, or data manipulation, expert assistance can help you overcome challenges and excel in your studies.
In conclusion, adapting to university life as an international student requires resilience, resourcefulness, and a willingness to embrace new experiences. By cultivating connections, managing your time effectively, seeking academic support, and leveraging available resources, you can navigate the challenges of university life with confidence. And remember, if you ever find yourself struggling with database assignments or any other academic tasks, don't hesitate to reach out for services like the "Database Homework Help" website. These services are there to support you on your academic journey.

2024.05.16 07:32 Old_Fun5850 Son scammed via Snapchat and paid

Hi everyone, I'm mum to a 19 year old young man with Autism and a mild intellectual disability.
All he wants is to find a girlfriend and someone to love. So when a supposed woman of similar age added him on snap on Monday he began chatting and didn't see any issues. Looking through the messages, this person rarely answered my sons questions about herself but instead kept probing for his information and asking him to send her photos of himself. He sent her photos of his face but no nudes thank God!
So, unbeknown to me by Monday evening she was his girlfriend and he believed she loved him. Then she said she'd come visit him Tuesday but needs money for fuel and a new dress. My son tried to say he doesn't have much money and he didn't want too but the power of this persons words were too strong. He ended up giving $50 the first time via Cardless cash and $100 the second time also via cardless cash. This all happened the day of this person contacting him! It happened so quickly.
Yesterday this person sends him a message with his face and pictures of male genitals and a title saying "this man attempted to have sex with a minor" and threatened to send it to friends and post it online etc etc. BUT if he paid $2,000 they wouldn't do anything. Finally he thought to call me and tell me what was happening. We went to the nearest police station and had to file a report online to a cyber crime website controlled by the Police. We also called the bank and unfortunately are unable to recoup that money because it was taken out from ATM's so there's no way to trace it.
We screenshot all conversations and threats then blocked this person and he has deleted his Snapchat account. He has also set other social media platforms to private and changed passwords. We think we'll have to change his phone number as he gave that too.
My son is absolutely beside himself with emotions. As he has Autism he is struggling to understand these feelings and emotions and is also very embarrassed. I am trying to help him understand that these people are good at what they do and that millions of people fall for these scams.
I am posting this in the hopes it helps someone else and that maybe others who have been through this could provide a word of encouragement or share their story.
Thank you <3

2024.05.16 07:17 TheDJParty RBC - Account Take Over - Hackers

This is a long story and if you do read through it and can offer advice it would be greatly appreciated.
I can't find too much if anything similar to my experience. I'm wondering if anyone heard about this and any advice?
About 6 months ago I got a call on my phone from RBC on the call display. It was spoofed but I didn't know it. The person on the phone asked me if I used my debit card to purchase an iphone in Ontario. I said no, and he said it's not a problem these things happen all the time, they will cancel the purchase and send me a new card.
This is not too out of the ordinary for me as I had my credit card have unauthorized purchases several times in the past. The weird thing was this time it was a debit card.
Then he said he can not ask my debit card number but a recording will follow and I should key in my debit card number. This was my major mistake. I know never to give a credit card number, PIN or password but for some reason I never thought of my debit card number to be a major issue. Like what if I lost it?
Anyway after I did that he came back and I asked him to mail the new one to my bank. He said no he would mail it to my home and told me my very old address. I told him no, it's unacceptable mail it to my bank branch like always. He then hung up on me. I didn't give any other info.
Minutes later I got an email from RBC saying my password has been changed! Then another saying my email has been changed. I quickly tried to login and couldn't so I called RBC Security.
As I was talking my email inbox got 1000's of email newsletter sign up confirmations per hour. About 12 000 in total by the next morning. It's a business email so it ruined everything and I couldn't find legit emails but that's besides the point.
The goal of doing that is because it was their hopes I would not see the emails from RBC.....but lucky they came first. it's called a Spam Bomb.
RBC Security said they would help me change my password back and I was able to reset it. Only minutes later while still on the phone....I had logged out and then tried to log back in....And he said this is strange. he put me on hold. He said there was someone on another call with the call centre claiming to be me and getting the password changed! He somehow was passing all the authentication and fooling the agent into changing the password.
So he put a block on the account meaning nobody can call in. Not even me. No passwords or access codes, nothing. The only way I could deal with RBC is going into the branch.
No money went missing. I guess I caught it just in time. Nothing was changed in my accounts. But I still cancelled all my credit cards and got new ones. And I got new account numbers for my bank accounts.
As I had to do this at the branch it took several visits and anytime I needed to ask a question Id have to go in person. I changed my phone number and even to do this in the back end systems beyond online banking I had to make an appointment. Fun fact RBC has to wait on hold forever also, no special access lines.
After changing my accounts I changed my phone number because they kept calling back. Changing your phone number nowadays is a major undertaking as I have 100's of websites many with 2 factor auth that I had to change. I also changed all my passwords unique without any matching.
After all this....I travelled to Japan. In fact I travel 6 months of the year to many countries. I decided to log into my online banking using a VPN. Big mistake. The system thought I was fraud and it locked me out. And I can't call! Luckily I have an account manager who knows me well and we could verify that way but most people don't have this.
Another time my debit cards weren't working anywhere in The Philippines and I couldn't call in. It was Christmas and my account manager wasn't available for 4 days. I had no cash. What a disaster.
So when I got home....I had to take this call block off. It's just not working. It had already been 2.5 months and my computer was factory reset, I purchased a new phone. I had really done everything I could.
I travelled to several countries and no problems, everything is working normal and perfect.
I take security very seriously to the point of paranoia. And I also know all the scams. I don't get fooled easily and used to have a hobby to mess with the scammers heads. But even this I don't do anymore because they probably put me on some sort of list or something.
Since then Ive been very private.
Then yesterday....I get an email saying my email has been changed. Lucky no spam bomb. I tried to log into RBC and it didn't say wrong password, it said account it locked.
I called RBC Security and they said I need to go into the branch with ID and they wouldn't talk to me.
I did so. They said someone called in and passed the verification. And convinced RBC to reset my password for them. This is infuriating because there are notes saying that I am a victim of account take over and to proceed with caution.
Again no money is missing but I need to change all my accounts and cards again. And I'm leaving to Africa in a few weeks.
I now have that call block on the system and can't release it otherwise the scammers will just call back and convince RBC to change my password again. What can I do about this?
I had the idea to change my debit card number. They will change the account numbers and credit card numbers but not the debit card number. Changing this number I think will solve all my problems. But no matter how far I escalated this. They won't do it. Not a chance. To me it seems the most logical way to start fresh as they are using that info to the agent.
So I opened a new account with another bank. I'll use this as a travel account and fund it with what I need. But with RBC I have many investment accounts, business accounts, several high end credit cards. You name it. And TD banks credit card for travel doesn't seem to match the power of RBC Avion which I accumulate tons of points with my business. Which is why I can travel so much! So in other words it's not easy to switch.
But anyway Does anyone know how they are passing the authentication so easy? Nobody knows my 3 secret phrases. Not even my wife. RBC usually have voice authentication, I guess that failed. Or they recorded me?
And also the hacker originally repeated my old address but I never gave a new one. When I do call RBC they usually ask my address and things about my account that I am likely only to know. It's so strange.
How can I get out of this mess?
Does anyone have any success having their physical debit card number changed? Any other advice?
I feel one day if this keeps happening I could be out money.
Would I be protected and refunded?
While I admit I did get fooled into giving my debit card number it wasn't my pin or password and they were the ones who tricked RBC over and over. And Ive taken all reasonable preacuations to secure my account since then.
However having this severely restricted account where I can't call in and since I travel 6 months per year as you can imagine I can't do this long term.
if you read this far thanks so much for reading, Any advice is appreciated!

2024.05.16 05:36 Creative-Concern8590 AUSTRALIA: New Festival Warning

Hi everyone. This post is in regards to the “K hiphop & rnb” festival being held in Sydney and Melbourne this July.
This festival is being held by Prime Entertainment, and I feel responsible to make everyone aware of just how shady this company is.
Below is a recap of my experiences with prime, having worked with them directly, and being an industry professional, I feel I am best suited to comment on the matter. Please read this.
I urge you all to please not attend these shows, they are likely to have artists pulled or the shows be cancelled entirely.
I am happy to answer any questions anyone has.
Thank you.
My Experience with Prime Entertainment
Hi. If this seems familiar that’s because this is a recap of everything that’s happened so far, I want to provide all the current information in one place for the relevant people to access.
Please read this the whole way through.
I have worked in the audio industry, in concert production for around 6 years now, and I’ve had my fair share of shit clients, but I have NEVER been treated with such lack of respect and have witnessed such disorganised business before.
I worked with Prime Entertainment on the TripleS in Sydney show last December. I was brought on less than a week before the show and was tasked with fixing a major issue with the staging, an issue that required me to hire in extra equipment and negotiate with venue staff to meet safety requirements. I understand not many of you are familiar with the world of concert production, but to put this simply, it was a job that required WAY more than THREE DAYS to complete in a satisfactory way.
Fixing this issue took me many hours, emails, phone calls, the whole lot, just to fix a damn stage.
Two days before the show, I was also asked to source 6-8 more lights to place on the front of the stage, and despite efforts that is not something I was able to provide given the timeframe.
Prime, I’m an engineer. Not a miracle worker.
I had explained ahead of the show that I was expecting payment and verbally outlined my rates, which in hindsight was a bad move as I now don’t have that in writing.
Post show, I send my invoice to Prime with the attached due date.
I was left on read for nearly two weeks.
It was only when I threatened legal action that I got a response, and to that, I was told that my rates were “unacceptable” and I was offered an hourly rate $30 per hour below my standard AV rate. Below minimum wage for casual workers under the LPA.
We settled on a middle ground, still $10 under my standard rate.
By that point, Prime had racked up almost $200 in late fees, which Prime refused to pay. And still has not paid. I ended up just letting it go as I just needed to pay my rent.
Let’s talk about VIP photos.
It does NOT take you MONTHS to receive photos from your photographers and get them out to the fans who paid for them. Plain and simple. Tell me why we only just received the Melbourne TripleS VIP photos, only AFTER having to contact you about this. I discovered that the reason these pics haven’t been provided is because prime hasn’t actually PAID those photographers yet. Multiple. Going all the way back to kwave.
And what’s more, you didn’t even provide all of them! Some people had their images left out of the file, conveniently the same people who have been trying to get answers out of you regarding photo approvals for a show that happened in NOVEMBER.
Prime, you do not get to sit there and leave people, clients, and audience alike on READ for weeks when you are withholding vital information and people’s rightful money that YOU owe them. That is plainly disrespectful.
Tabber and Jey.
What on earth made you think cancelling a Jey tour stop and not making a statement about it on your main platform was a good idea? Not everyone is checking your website daily, however if you had just put a post out on your instagram this would’ve been a lot better.
Now as for Tabber, it has been months and you have not processed refunds for the ticketholders who purchased VIP tickets at the incorrect price. It is now less than a month until the show and these people are unsure if their tickets are even valid because you WON’T COMMUNICATE.
This is your fuck up, Prime. You need to fix it.
You, as a promoter and event organiser, have a duty to be transparent with your audience about everything that pertains to the events you run, and you have not done such thing at all.
You have been severely unprofessional and lack the basic communication skills required for this kind of work. If you are not capable of running this business in a productive way, you need to hand it over to someone who can.
I refuse to sit idly by and watch you mislead your audience, this doesn’t just affect you, it affects the artists, the audience and the Australian music industry. You have a responsibility here and you have failed.
You have been given so many chances to fix these issues and you have instead stuck your head in the sand each and every time. Shame.
UPDATE 1:
well who’s surprised. I got blocked on all platforms. But I have some more information that I’d like to share.
After I put out my first post, I met up with a photographer who worked on some Prime shows last year and discovered that I was NOT the only one who did not get paid! This person is owed several hundred dollars by prime and has invoices MONTHS overdue, with radio silence from Prime. And he’s not the only one.
And now to add insult to injury, Prime is now approaching other photographers interstate and offering to pay for them to fly to Sydney and Melbourne for this hiphop festival in July, before even paying their professionals from shows LAST YEAR.
Now an update on VIP photos. As I’m sure those of you with packages know, not all the VIP photos were provided. Prime, people PAID for these photos, you do not get to pick and choose who gets them.
Prime is still yet to provide ANY vip photos for certain people, and quite frankly it’s petty and immature to withhold these images because you don’t like someone. This is grossly unprofessional.
People paid for these photos Prime, and I am not above getting my hands on them myself and getting them to the rightful people myself. I know you blocked me but I know you’ll see this either way, so let’s put it this way, I am in the process of acquiring these photos myself and I will be releasing them. The photographers deserve to be paid and the fans deserve the benefits they paid for.
You didn’t pay for them so you have no right to them. Stop leaving people on READ when they ask about the money they are rightfully owed.
Get your head out of your ass and get your shit together before you lose your business.
UPDATE 2:
I cannot believe we’re talking about this again.
It seems like every single time I hear about them things just get worse.
I am beyond angry.
I refuse to sit by and let Prime ruin Australia and New Zealand’s touring industry.
We as a country, rely so much on the international touring industry and companies like prime that routinely scam fans and artists are damaging the economy and I will not have it.
How fucking dare you come back and do a show when you actively owe thousands of dollars to fans to artists and to staff. The fucking audacity that you have astounds me.
Where are the refunds for Tabber? Where are the VIP pictures for Jey? Where is the merch that people ordered for Gemini?
You don’t have it because you clearly are incompetent and are a scammer.
You have time and time again, failed to pay the people that are supporting your shows and making these shows possible for you, and bringing you an income. You are ungrateful, selfish, entitled, and severely unprofessional.
You have no place in our industry.
Do NOT purchase any tickets for the k-hip hop & rnb festival. It’s likely to be canceled and you are likely to not receive any of your ticket benefits. This is ploy for money because they need it to pay for other things that I’m not at liberty to disclose. But it’s not good.
Prime, you’re too deep in your own shit to claw yourself out. You deserve to be in jail for what you’ve done. You disgust me on a very guttural level.
This isn’t just about me. This is about the industry as a whole. Gio, you are DESTROYING the Australian and New Zealand touring industry by operating in this way.
You need to stop. I do not CARE how much more money you lose. Cancel the show. You won’t get away with this, not unless I’m fucking dead.
I have contacted the management of each of the artists schedule to perform at the festival, and have strongly discouraged them from going through with it.
Please share this and tag the artists and the companies in this post so that they can see this.
We need to make it known that this behaviour is not acceptable at all in our industry and in our country. We are better than this.
I would also like to quickly mention something that I’ve already mentioned on my Instagram story.
Prime entertainment and Nova entertainment are not the same people.
Nova entertainment has been nothing but amazing to me ever since we started working together and ever since this whole situation blew up. Please send them your love and support, they have been through enough.
They are not responsible for any of the mismanagement of any previous shows, in fact, they’re the reason that most of them went ahead in the first place. They were handed a shitty deck of cards, and they did the best that they could with them, please do not send any hate. They were not responsible, and they are no longer associated with Prime.

2024.05.16 05:21 Infamous_Tomatillo53 Where should I put a large json file that my web app depends on?

Hi folks, I am building an nextjs app which has a map component and it renders a geojson layer on the base map. The geojson file is pretty big (5MB)
Currently I simply wrapped the json content as a JavaScript variable. As you can imagine, bundle size for the map component is 5MB+. This is obviously not ideal. Not only it makes the website slow to load; it also significantly increases the bandwidth consumption because each time a user loads the page, it downloads 5MB from next js server. Over time, it could lead to unnecessary host cost.
I would like some tips around how I can best serve this geojson file. I have only some general ideas and really struggle because my lack of experience in web development:
Could anyone shed some light which direction I should pursue?
Thanks.
Update: following a comment, I would like to share more context around what this geojson is for:
“Basically I have a button “show county layer on map” - once the user clicks it, it displays all the counties on the map so user can click individual polygons(counties) to explore them.
My current design/thought is to load the geojson data at the beginning when the site is loaded. But I have also thought about not letting it block the other parts of the website (because user most likely won’t go straight to click the display county button), and let it download in the background - I just don’t know how that can be implemented in React, do you know?
Regarding if I can split the data into chunks - Yes! I can split them. Are you suggesting downloading them in smaller chunks? What’s the benefit of it in this context?”

2024.05.16 04:43 BrynH123 Just had the weirdest interaction at Marcus Point Cinemas

My girlfriend and I wanted to go see Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes tonight at Marcus point, we thought it said it was playing at 10 so we showed up at 9:30 and the doors were unlocked but there was a rope blocking the door. I guess they closed a bit early? So we just stood there waiting for an employee to show up to ask. Someone walked by after a couple minutes, so we called out to them asking "Are you closed?". They glanced at us... then just turned back around. We thought they might have not heard us so we called out again, this time realizing there was someone else behind the counter the whole time out of view. No response. They were just pretending we weren't there... it was super bizarre. We called out a couple more times like "Hello?" And "Can you hear us?" and they were just completely ignoring us just pacing around like we didn't exist.
Edit: For some claification: Yes we could have just saw the roped off doorway and just turned around and left but it said they were open until 10 and it wasn't for another 30 mins so I just wanted to ask to see if we could expect this in the future because maybe they are short staffed. It said on their website that there were movies still playing at 10.

2024.05.16 03:43 pakrninja 20 things I learned for budget oriented tourists in Vegas

  1. Fremont Street Experience - 3 stages with Live bands, plenty of street performers, 2 OG casinos (1 of which lets you take a picture with $1,000,000) plus plentiful bars/restaurants. Spending money is not required. We didn't make it at night, but from what I understand it is a good show. During the summer there are more popular artists that perform in the area.
  2. Buy a bus pass. $20 for 3 days of unlimited rides. Bus stops at most casinos on the strip as well as Fremont Street. It can get crowded, but it is far cheaper than Lyft/Uber or parking your own vehicle.
  3. Plan on having cash on hand for tipping. They gave us a booklet with recommended tipping amounts for just about any potential service you could require. On a budget you don't want to be that tourist that doesn't tip when expected, but you also don't want to overdue it. Just a quick few (Bellhops $1-$3 per bag, Housekeeping $5-$10 per day you have them clean, Buffets $5-$10 per person)
  4. Just about everything else can be purchased using Credit/Debit cards. Even a lot of the street performers take digital payments now (Zelle, CashApp, Venmo, Paypal)
  5. High Roller observation wheel - If you are 21+, I would recommend getting the "Happy half hour" tickets (Cost a bit more but include unlimited drinks on your ride) which can be used at any time of the day, but definitely go at night. Pods are supposed to hold up to 40 ppl, but when we went we had about 12-15 people besides us. Plenty of room and plenty of time to get your drink on.
  6. Wear comfortable shoes, When looking at a map it can be deceiving how far things are from each other. You will find out quickly that you will put some mileage on. My wife and I averaged about 9-10 miles of walking per day, and that was with us trying to avoid it due to medical issues.
  7. Hotel - We stayed at the Hilton Grand Vacations, it's a very nice hotel. Our room was massive, included a full kitchen, dishwasher, dishes, washedryer, and an in wall safe. Be aware, they will ransack you with signing up for a sales presentation. If you are willing to sit through the presentation you will score some goodies, like free show tickets or free dinner, etc. You are under no obligation to buy anything, but if you want free... this is a good way.
  8. Speaking of washedryer in our room, check your booking closely to see if you have one. If you do, make sure to not overpack. We stayed a week and probably could have packed for 3 days and been just fine.
  9. Book a room with a full kitchen if possible. We went grocery shopping after checking in and stocked up enough basic foods for the week so we didn't have to eat out every meal. When every meal is going to cost you a minimum of $15-$20 per person basically everywhere, it can add up quick. Plus all of the dishes were included, we just had to wash them. They also provided dishwasher detergent.
  10. Resort Fees - Be aware of the hotel charging resort fees. As far as I am aware, every hotel on the strip at least has resort fees. HGV had one at $30 per night (Which literally paid for our "complimentary"Wi-Fi, having a phone in our room, and being allowed to self park) Valet was $40 per night billed on our hotel tab.
  11. Do not engage with the sales people on the streets unless you are truly interested. It is easy to get scammed and you aren't getting your money back. They also will hound you if you show the least bit of interest in what they are doing. If you bring kids, be aware that there is a TON of pornographic material/cards being handed out or offered in newspaper style machines. Not to mention the "showgirls" that are wandering around with very little on offering to take pictures with you (for a fee of course), there are also BDSM women that walk around and offer to spank you, in front of everyone of course.
  12. If you are a people watcher, be aware there are limited areas to sit and just people watch unless you sit at a barestaurant. There are surfaces around to sit on in some places, but I wouldn't count on it.
  13. Our 2 favorite restaurants on our trip. Margaritaville (Which we were informed will be closing down it's current location due to their lease expiring, but they are looking for a new location.) and Heart attack grill. If you don't know what either of those are, go on youtube and search. Heart attack grill is a themed restaurant and it is geared towards unhealthy eaters (or fat people if you will). Food was delicious though. Margaritaville had great food, great atmoshere, and great service.
  14. Buffet - If you are tempted to spend $$$ on an expensive buffet, be aware they really aren't worth the cost if you are on a budget. We went to the Wynn buffet ($75/person) which included our non-alcoholic drinks. If I had known then what I know now, I honestly would have ONLY gone for dessert. While there is a large assortment of really good food, it is all designed to fill you up quickly and there is just about zero chance you get your $75 worth unless you are a professional eater (or eat like one). But going for desserts, you have so many different choices to try and the portions are smaller being desserts. If you were to buy these desserts at a normal restaurant, they would price between $5-$25. That means you can quickly get your $75 worth without overeating. As of this post, Wynn buffet is the 2nd most expensive buffet, behind bacchanal. We only ate at the Wynn buffet, but there are also more reasonably priced buffets around $30-$50 per person.
  15. Blue Man Group - If you haven't heard of them, look them up. They are a comedy show, but not stand up comedy. It's skit based, involves lots of music and crowd interaction. There is NO TALKING from the members of the blue man group, they only act. Which just adds to the show, we loved it. It's a little pricey, I paid about $135 each for tickets... but it was pretty much the highlight of our trip.
  16. Any restaurants you plan on visiting, make reservations. Most you can make online. It may not be needed, but if you show up and there is a line down the block, you get to skip the line. Well worth it, just make sure you are there on time or you lose your spot.
  17. Avoid buying tourist trap excursions off websites claiming to give you a deal. 99% of them are either the exact same price as if you walk up to the venue or possibly even slightly more expensive. Not to mention, they are literally called a tourist trap for a reason. If you have money to blow, have at it. But on a budget, you won't miss out by not getting sucked in.
  18. At basically every restaurant there will be a photographer walking around offering to take pictures. Don't be fooled into thinking these are free photos. They will give you one complimentry photo that is tiny, like as small as those instamax cameras (1x1 photos). They will offer you 2 larger photos (4x6) in a (not so) fancy cardboard photo frame. At the time of this post, it was $20 per photo. *Tourist Hack* If you want the photos, tell them you do not want them and they will offer you both photos without the cardboard frame for $20. This worked at every single restaurant that we hit. Although, we only purchased twice, because how many restaurant photos with logos and crap on it do you need?
  19. If you really want to save money, do things OFF-strip. Everything on the strip is pricier, I do mean EVERYTHING.
  20. All gift shops have basically the same things. We visited the "Worlds Largest Gift Shop" and also one called ABC gifts (or something like that). Honestly, the Worlds largest felt crowded and overwhelming. The ABC shop we went to had some nice things in it that we bought, I would recommend them.

2024.05.16 03:43 EdenRocMusic Ive had IGLA on my Camaro since December. AMA

Hey all, after my 16 was stolen, I was able to get a new 24 ordered before orders closed last year. The day it was delivered I had IGLA and compustar installed. I have a bunch of experience with IGLA now and I want to help everyone who is confused about it. Ask me anything and I’ll try to respond to as many as I can.
Basic answers:
What exactly is IGLA? It’s a digital kill switch, that will not let the car drive without first entering a “password” or pincode using the buttons on your steering wheel. For example, when I get in my car, I start the engine, if I do not enter my pincode, the second I shift the car out of park, my engine with immediately die and will not restart until my PIN code is entered. It also doubles as an OBD2 blocker, what that means is, anyone who plugs into the port will not have access to anything. I have tested this at my local Chevy dealership. They couldn’t even run a diagnostic on the car until I put IGLA into maintenance mode with a separate special pincode that is given to you after you’ve bought the product.
How much is it? IGLA pricing for Camaros specifically is $1200-$1400.
How do I get it? IGLA’s website lists all approved dealers within the United States. It is not a product that can be just be bought and installed by yourself. Every installer but be trained on how to install and program it for each make and model car.
IGLA’s website has multiple devices available, I DONT KNOW WHAT TO BUY! IGLA is a Russian company that sells multiple products in Europe. Here in the US, it’s ONE product. When you go to an installer, they only have one singular product and that’s all you need. The website can be confusing, but trust me, it’s one product that blocks your OBD2 and is a kill switch.
I called a dealer and they said they can only install up to the 2022 Camaro, am I SOL? No! Absolutely not. Any dealer who says that has not done the updated training. I had IGLA installed in my 2024 2SS back in December and it works flawlessly, I even asked my installer why some shops say that and his response was the 23 model year changed something and installers needed to be retrained.
Feel free to ask any questions I missed, I’ll do my best to answer what I can! I hope this helps, and PLEASE, Do yourself a favor, get IGLA and protect your ride.

2024.05.16 03:30 Massive-Development1 250 Write-Up for Step 3

Never done one of these, but figured I got lots of info from here so I'd pass on what seemed to work for me. I'm not an expert in test-taking, so keep that in mind before accepting anything I say as absolute.
For background, I am an IM intern who also completed a surgery prelim last year (graduated from USMD school in 2022).
Step 1: 247 (2020)
Step 2ck: 242 :/ (2021)
I was lucky enough to have the 3 weeks prior to my test on a super chill rotation with lots of free time. I have learned from past test taking that I benefit most through exposing myself to topics in multiple different ways. Beginning of this intern year, I used Uworld to study for my ITE exam and did ~500 questions (scored 72%). I then stopped and started doing blocks here and there with my down time in the hospital the last 2-3 months prior to exam day. During the final 3 weeks of study time was my "dedicated." During this time I had majority of day off from rotations. I spent the majority of each day doing blocks of questions for time and then spending a good bit of time reviewing every question and why the answer was correct and why the other answers were wrong. I'd often go into rabbit holes googling pictures, looking up topics, or going back to Step 1 FA book to relearn basics. Doing this, I was luckily able to complete Uworld a few days prior to my test (first time Ive ever come close to this). Doing questions can get boring, so when I needed a break I'd go on walks and listen to Divine Intervention podcasts. Usually shelf review podcasts for my weakest subjects (OB/Peds). And also hit the most floridly HY ones from the excel doc (Risk factors, most common _____, etc.). I would listen to his podcasts in the car, while working out, and just about anywhere I had idle time by myself. Can't tell you how many times on test day I saw questions that I could literally hear Divine's voice in my head making a corny joke that'd they ask it. Also, at least a dozen questions were word for word from Uworld. So much so, that I saw the picture and just looked at the final question and was able to answer correctly in <10 secs.
I read through FA Step 1 sections that are most commonly tested (GI/Cards/Renal etc). I also read the biochem diseases section (don't do this; waste of time). Studying for ABSITE my surgery year (82%) allowed me to neglect any studying for surgery/trauma topics. I did spend disproportionate amount of time on Peds and OBGYN just because I do not see these pts in real life lol.
For Biostats, I did the Uworld biostats review once and would use FA Step 1 for all the equations and made Anki cards for the ones I'd habitually forget. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH, biostats is free points. Know it so well that you get excited when you see a question on it. It had to be at least a third of the exam on day 1 and all easy free points. I don't recall a single WTF biostats question. All pretty clear.
For pharm, I knew I was weak on antimicrobials and chemotherapeutics. I just flipped through some of these old Sketchies and picked it up pretty quickly. (note: I had memorized these for step 1 in 2020). Drug side effects and MOA should also be free points.
For the multistep advertisement questions, I'd recommend skipping and coming back to at end of each block. For the first few blocks I would get bogged down and have to guess on the last question or two in block which turned out to be easy questions usually.
Day 2 is more clinical (Step 2CK/Shelf) questions and the cases. For cases, I bought the CCS cases and devoted my entire gap day between Day 1 and 2 to mastering the format and collecting points. I first learned the methodical approach that this guy describes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmxWuV4psFs . ( I legit wrote down the steps on my whiteboard). Then I ordered the CCS cases in order of high yield and did the top 20 then did the USMLE free ones as well. Of all my cases on the real thing, I really only had one that ended with me having no clue wtf was wrong w the patient. Don't be afraid to push time forward to see results!
Day 2 Clinical multiple choice questions is kind of hard to study for. It's really something that I very heavily leaned on my clinical experience as surgery intern and medical intern for. (ie in this presentation, what would we normally order next to diagnose the pt). Some scenarios I remembered seeing in real life less than a month prior.
In summary, this is a hard test w many questions where they expect you to see where they're pointing you without them giving you all the information you'd like. These types of questions will require lots of thought and may even result in incorrect despite much time spent. Because of this fact, to SUCCEED in step 3 you need to just collect all the "free" points you can. "Free" points are straight memorization questions that you know will be tested because they tell you on their website. (ie MOA, drug side effects, BIOSTATS, Screening, Cases). If you master these topics, then the tough questions will just be increasing your pass margin. Additionally, I'd argue that you'd be more relaxed and less pressured on the harder questions with the comfort in knowing you nailed those other topics.
UWSA1: 220 (5 days out)
Step 3 Free 120: ~70%
Uworld question bank completed: 70% correct (weeks up to test was averaging 75-85%)
Real Step 3: 250

2024.05.16 02:09 3947338 I’m 13 going to try noFap

As I said I am 13 started masturbation when I was around 10 and it has messed up my life a little bit. Kind of recently I started getting homeschooled but haven’t done it properly yet so a lot of the time I’m at home by myself with not much to do, so I resorted to masturbating quite a lot like 2-4 times a day, which causes me to not go outside as often as I should other than on the weekend. Let alone at night which I normally do about 1 or 2 times per night which causes me to have nowhere near enough sleep as I need. So anyway I found this subreddit yesterday and saw some other people my age doing the same thing which has motivated me to try noFap. I have deleted the Reddit account i used to watch porn and blocked nsfw websites and subreddits. I hope it works out well and might comment on this post to update people, Have a nice day.

2024.05.16 01:59 Same-Standard3369 Advice for surgery / health ins.

I’m 25 years old, no children, no insurance, an income below $25,000 and need surgery.
Backstory- I was recently hospitalized for 4 days due to an UBJ obstruction, in other words the ureter tube that carries urine from my kidneys to my bladder is blocked by a blood vessel causing severe pain some days and discomfort most days. Not only am I now drowning in hospital bills (HCA hospital) 🫠 the problem is also not fixed, either. The urologist will not do the surgery without insurance, understandably so, as the cost ranges from $16,000 to $24,000. He offered to place a stent but said that would not fix the issue and could potentially make my pain worse.
While in the hospital I was encouraged, by an advocate who came to my room, to apply for the “Pinellas County Health Program” which I believe the lady also called “Florida Blue” (?, correct me if I’m wrong, exhaustion at its finest) but was denied due to my income.
What are my options to get this surgery done? Hospital recommendations? Insurance recommendations?
I’m going to eventually burn a hole in my phone from all the research and googling I’ve done over the past few days. The healthcare websites are almost like a foreign language and when I (stupidly) put my phone number in on one, I ended up with over 100 healthcare spam calls in 3 days.
Please help, and please be kind. As this is all new to me. Thank you in advance!

2024.05.16 01:57 CarolineJohnson Looking to decipher some codes from Ben Drowned, left over after the whole thing ended

These codes were made available to viewers/players of the Ben Drowned ARG from late 2010 to late 2020. Mainly late 2010 through mid 2012, then in mid-to-late 2020.
All the codes we have ever been given can be found here for context, and the wiki for Ben Drowned is here in the event you think you might need it. What I'll be posting/linking here will exclusively be just ones that have gone unsolved.
  1. THE GLITCH
    • UJQ XGJXDIY EXYGXGJZAE. UJQXKXDIYEKYOJZAE. UZAE. SGK JQ SOO ITSYGJQN JAJMNR (NOTE: Full formatting here)
    • LOCATION: A variant of the homepage of the original You Shouldn't Have Done That website, in late 2010. Site is now dead, but the page was available for such a brief period of time one night that it was never archived.
    • Was accompanied by a picture of a gas mask taken from Deviantart, and IIRC the page had the Ikana Canyon theme from Majora's Mask in reverse playing on it.
    • Image included because it is unknown if the formatting is related to the solution.
  2. FILE 59 CODE 1
    • EBOAKBBYCKWWXQGMEQNOK,RKZVOKCIVOWYJJMBKA
    • LOCATION: A page of the original You Shouldn't Have Done That website, in late 2010. The page was titled "59". Site is now dead, and no archive was made of the page as it was hidden from the sitemap.
    • Was accompanied by a cipher that translated to "KAYD HENDRICKS YOU ARE IN DANGER."
    • Has a potential solution of "I SEE YOU THREE LIVE, CAN MY DEAR ROSA PLEASE LIVE" that was acknowledged as correct in 2018, but given the context of the other code as well as later plot elements it could also not be. More or less, this is a solution confirmation request, though I can't tell you how that potential solution was gathered to begin with as I don't understand ciphers that well.
  3. SPECTROGRAM IN METHODS OF REVOLUTION DAY 11 CODE 1
    • 01110 00100000 01010010 01100001 01110111 01110110 00100000 01101001 01100110 00100000 01100011 01101100 01101001 01111001 01101010
    • LOCATION: The spectrogram at the beginning of this video, followed by a second cipher.
    • The second cipher accompanying this one translated to "You will be given."
    • I found that if you translate the binary, then run that solution through a monoalphabetic brute-forcing tool can cause it to translate to the phrase "many of those". Due to the vagueness of the phrase, method of getting to that solution, and the lack of confirmation from the creator, this is more of a solution confirmation request.
  4. METHODS OF REVOLUTION DAY 21 CODE 2
    • BJWHS4TLNMQGU4TNNZTSA4TBOVWGOIDJM5XG22RAO5VWO5T2EBUGS===
    • LOCATION: The middle of this video.
    • Accompanied by a cipher that translated to "FOR YOUR SAFETY".
    • While that's normal base32, it's suspected that the translation of that base32 could be an enigma cipher.
  5. METHODS WEBSITE JADUSABLE PAGE
    • 101000101101001010101010000100100011001010011010000001001101001000101010100000101010101000000100010000100101101000000100000100100100001000100010000001000001101001100010000001000001101000100010100010100000010010011010100010100110101000000100000100100100101000110010110010100000010001011010100000100010101011010010
    • LOCATION: The Methods of Revolution website, in 2020. It was on an otherwise-page titled "jadusable" (the name of the main character of the first arc of the ARG). The site is now dead, and I do not believe the page was ever archived (I can't remember if the site blocked archival or if Archive.org just didn't get it in time).
  6. SPECTROGRAM CODE IN THE PREDECESSOR.WMV

    • LOCATION: The spectrogram of this video
    • Unsure if the second block of text (the all caps part) is supposed to have that Y at the beginning or not, the spectogram's kind of fuzzy there.
    • Nobody knows if the text blocks go together or are separate! Sorry!

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. airlines are suing to block the Biden administration from requiring greater transparency over fees that the carriers charge their passengers, saying that a new rule would confuse consumers by giving them too much information during the ticket-buying process.
The U.S. Transportation Department said Monday it will vigorously defend the rule against what it called “hidden junk fees.”
American, Delta, United and three other carriers, along with their industry trade group, sued the Transportation Department in a federal appeals court on Friday, asking the court to overturn the rule.
The trade group, Airlines for America, said the Transportation Department is going beyond its authority by attempting “to regulate private business operations in a thriving marketplace.” The airlines said the administration hasn’t shown that consumers can’t get information about fees already.
“Airlines go to great lengths to make their customers knowledgeable about these fees,” Airlines for America said Monday. “The ancillary fee rule by the Department of Transportation will greatly confuse consumers who will be inundated with information that will only serve to complicate the buying process.”
The Transportation Department announced the new rule on April 24. It would require airlines and travel agents to disclose upfront any charges for baggage and canceling or changing a reservation. Airlines must show the fees on the first website page where they quote a price for a flight.
The agency estimated that the rule will save consumers more than $500 million a year.
“We will vigorously defend our rule protecting people from hidden junk fees and ensuring travelers can see the full price of a flight before they purchase a ticket. Many air travelers will be disappointed to learn that the airline lobby is suing to stop these common-sense protections,” the department said Monday.
Among the nation’s six biggest airlines, only Southwest did not join the legal challenge, which was filed in the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. Southwest said the rule will have little to no effect on it because the Dallas-based carrier lets passengers check two bags for free and has never charged extra fees for changing or canceling reservations.
“Overall, we support every airline’s right to price its products but believe fees should be clearly and consistently disclosed, so consumers can make informed purchasing decisions,” Southwest said.

We just issued a rule requiring airlines to inform you, before you buy a ticket, of fees they will charge you. Now, the airline lobby is suing us, saying that if you have the right to that information it will "confuse" you. For once, I am speechless.
