2024.05.16 07:08 CEOSnags contemplating on switching from win11 to arch linux
So for a while now I've been a Windows user going from XP to win7 so on and so forth. But now doing a lot of research on linux and weighing the pros abt and the cons about win11 and the privacy. As of right now I'm on Win11 and I have no problem with it I want to experience and new operating system I have tested out arch linux on VM and I am little knowledgeable on how it works. But I have so many games that I play like r6 I know the battle eye anti cheat will prevent me from playing also I play cod and Vrchat here and there but I play a lot of vr games like bonelab and others. The only problem is if I run VRC the anti cheat will flag my OS and kick me out of the game that's the only problem I would run into and also I wouldn't know how to get my vr headset to work. Also the fact I have a lot of Bluetooth devices, and im not sure if will be easy to set up or I would have to install a open source driver for it. I mean if I wanted to play r6 and any other anti cheat game I would prob run it under a vm in arch which Idk how to do and I would prob have to spoof the vm so the anti cheat wouldn't flag it as a vm. So if you have any advice before I make the change it would be much appreciated.

2024.05.16 04:47 drakaina6600 Progress on a slow build
| So as bad as I've felt recently being sick for the entire year so far, I thought sharing the slow progress on one of my many cyberdeck builds/design exercises would cheer me up a little and maybe give others inspiration. So this is going to be, well is since I just don't have the shell yet, powered by a Raspberry Pi Zero 2w, has a 5 inch DSI lcd panel at 800x640, full keyboard, and touchpad, with USB C charging and 5v regulation (in progress), two 18650s in parallel for 6k-ish mah, mono audio through a speaker (once I find or make a DAC small enough to fit), and runs Debian in CLI to boot up Mac OS 8.5.5 in Basillisk II as the "main" OS w/wireless networking. The shells first iteration I'm showing is only about 150mm wide x 110mm deep x 25mm thick closed. It may get smaller as I finalize it and give it a little more style. Runs great on my test bench so far even though I don't have pics of that at the moment. Before I start trying to make the shell I rendered, it still needs a way to attach the display bezel to the lid, mounts dialed in for the Zero 2w, video board, power circuit, and hinge mounts. Oh and the base frame needs attachment to the base shell, although I'm just considering being lazy and using visible screws. I really don't like visible screws and hope to keep them all hidden. Almost forgot I still need to work on the openings for the rubber keycaps to poke through and the mouse buttons/d-pad for arrows and selection of things. Yeah, they're not as nice as proper clicky switches and solid keycaps, buuuuuut at this size without making custom boards, it's what I have to work with. The 2 green 18650s are accurately sized so you can get an idea of scale. The hinges I'm using are from an unknown laptop since I'm a hoarder with tech and strip all the goodies I can off things before trashing the rest w/out labeling anything for some reason. The batteries came as a factory matched set for a brand new laptop battery I stripped. Not looking forward to spot welding new tabs on them but hey, is what it is to have fun making your own devices. I just wanted a tiny computer to run some old Mac software I could fit in my purse or messenger bag when going places and tinkering with other Mac OS 7 & 8 machines i have. So here it is. So far. Ended up more laptop-ish than I'd like since I'm on the fence about running the extra gpio to the outside of the shell somewhere. Anyway. My renders are in the paid version of AutoDesk Fusion 360 for anyone interested and ignore the text on the lcd model. I made an accurate model of that display for building in cad and added that so it's easier to find everything for it online if I lose my bookmarks again. submitted by drakaina6600 to cyberDeck [link] [comments] |
2024.05.16 04:05 jclicky How to re-enable iOS16's "Live Text" Menu Helper & skip the "Autofill" step?
| On accessibility day, I thought I'd post something that helps my dyslexic self grab text more accurately, especially with my fat-fingers on a standard-sized iPhone (don't get me started), can anyone help me fix this? I have a work iPhone with this "Live Text" (introduced in iOS16) camera text-scanning menu item always available anytime at the initial [highest] pop-up menu level (as it was when first introduced in iOS16). This means, on that device, anytime I tap anywhere (when editing text, when the keyboard is active), I can immediately (with one additional tap) begin scanning text for insertion with the camera, like this: taken from: https://scottcate.com/technology/iphone-scan-live-text-from-keyboard/ It's intuitive, fast, and effectively makes any text in my life as available as the global hand-off copy-paste function when selecting text on one device, copying it, and then working with that text in another device immediately. This is what the feature was made for in my opinion, not to be hidden w/in the camera app or buried behind needless menu items. https://preview.redd.it/gq1rwxqj5p0d1.jpg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0ae0de3c7e0ea8c712a1d1c01a396ae46ccb58db I want to be able to copy text from the real world faster on my personal device in this way, but iOS17 seems to have buried this setting behind a needless additional "Autofill" step. I've found the insert-text workflow is super helpful & the "Live Text" feature is actually usable when immediately available, but I can't seem to find the toggle w/in newer iOS versions to re-enable the OG iOS16 "scan text" option immediately at the highest tier of menu. Currently, here's the process on my personal device (just tedious enough I don't use it): - Editing text (keyboard up)
- Tap anywhere
- Pop-up menu is visible
- Tap "AutoFill" [this is the step I wish to skip]
- Tap "Scan Text"
- This pops up a mini-camera in the place of the keyboard
- Camera's live-text detection selects text with brackets [] surrounding the text
- Tap "INSERT" and the selected text is then immediately added wherever the cursor is active
I feel like if an MDM device has enabled this menu item at the initial pop-up menu level for devices with new iOS versions, surely there has to be some setting buried somewhere in iOS17 to re-enable this helpful feature, which is in summary (functions as it did originally in iOS16): - While editing text (keyboard up), tap anywhere on the screen
- Tap the [=] icon
- This pops up a mini-camera in the place of the keyboard
- Camera's live-text detection selects text with brackets [] surrounding the text
- Tap "INSERT" and the selected text is then immediately added wherever the cursor is active
How can I force my post iOS16 personal device to function as the "Live Text" option menu hierarchy did in iOS16, as my work device (also iOS17) currently does, with no added "steps" to get to "Live Text"? Is it possible that my MDM device has deployed a custom keyboard that has this option at the root pop-up menu level a-la iOS16? Also, there seems to be ZERO opportunity to deploy "Live Text" as a quick option connected to gestures, double-tap, or the action button (I'm guessing, do not have an iPhone 15pro), am I missing something there? Here's a blog explaining more (for how it functioned with the shorter process on iOS16) for those who never / haven't used this: https://scottcate.com/technology/iphone-scan-live-text-from-keyboard/ submitted by jclicky to ios [link] [comments] |
2024.05.16 02:14 One-Aioli-9004 Need some help with new PC and cinebench scores
So i recently build a new PC for the first time in 10 years. Detailed specs can be found
here. Basic Specs are as follows:
- i9-14900K (Intel specified limits, 400A, 253W, etc)
- ASUS z790-e Gaming Wifi II
- 96GB G.SKILL DDR-6800 (Workstation/gaming rig necessitated high RAM amout, so had to strike a balance with amount and speed)
- ASUS TUF RTX 4090 OC
- CORSAIR iCUE Link H150i LCD 360mm AIO
- Corsair HX1200i 1200W PSU
So i've run into relatively few issues with the build, booted first try (Sweet, 10 years and can still build 'em). But i have had a few issues. One, temps for the CPU are idling around 31-35 but randomly spike up to 67 in some cases for a few seconds. I've read this is fairly normal for the 14900K but just want to confirm that. Full load temps are around 75-80, and stress tests are capping around 86 at the 2-3 hour mark.
Secondly, i'm running cinebench to get a good idea where it stands and from my reading i expected to get a 36K-40K but i'm only getting around a 34K. I've also noted that when i'm running the test my CPU cores aren't being pegged at 100% use anymore (they were the first few times i ran it), they're hovering around 35-45% use. I'm not getting any thermal throttling that i'm aware of, all the P-Cores are steady at 5700Mz with two at 6000Mhz, and the E-Cores at 4400Mhz steady.
I went back and changed some of the CPU power settings, i kept the 400A and 253 watt limits but set all the other intel baseline settings back to auto. This upped my score by about 1000, but that's about what i expected and still under what i would expect for this build.
I've been out of the game for a while so i don't really have any idea where the bottleneck might be, or what bios settings or other environmental settings might be capping me out here. So does anyone have any general advice or things i might try? I upped the multipliers on all the P-Cores and got better results obviously, but i want to know why i'm not getting what i expect out of stock speed and need to OC to get to stock scores.
P.S. Extra fun: Under load in games all my USB ports are randomly disconnecting and reconnecting seconds later. This is quite annoying. From research i've narrowed the culprit down to the Corsair ICUE Link Control Modules that control the corsair RGB lighting components. Anyone have any experience with this, or with resolving it?

2024.05.16 01:19 vGPU_Enjoyer Clover Bootloader randomly missing windows 10 boot options.
Hello I have Dell R7610 and 3 diffrent OS on that: 1. Windows 10 (NVME Goodram)
- ESXi (NVME Samsung)
- Proxmox (SATA zfs raid 0)
I need to have that bootloader on USB because UEFI not support NVME drives (I think only one very outdated micron is supported). And here is my problem windows 10 boot entries are missing every time I boot windows and then after work done I logout and then shutdown PC. And then after few soft restarts from clover via R button they will be back. And here is question If I can "Lock" somehow those proper boot options so they never will get missing again? And for example ESXi boot entry actually never go missing, that one works perfectly.
I know this isn't Mac related but I need help with that and I think here someone will know how to set up that.

2024.05.16 00:23 OfAnOldRepublic Crazy Intel I226-V (IGC) Problem - Download speed fine, upload speed is a trickle
I have a Asus Z790 ProArt Creator Motherboard which has a Intel I226-V (IGC) 2.5G ethernet on board. I'm using Sonoma, and OC 0.9.9. Works like a charm, or so I thought.
I was working on a project last night and started uploading the results and noticed that the upload speed was horribly slow. I did a speedtest, and download was fine, but upload was 0.48 Mbps. Usually it's 22 Mbps. Long story short, if I boot Windows, I get normal speeds up and down with the same stuff.
I'm already using the latest version (1.4) of AppleIGC.kext, and I've tried with and without the e1000=0 boot arg. I've also checked the settings in MacOS and Hardware -> Configure is set to Automatically, and shows up as 1000baseT, full-duplex (which is what I expect with my router).
So I'm truly at a loss here. What on earth could affect only the upload speed, and how can I fix it? I've done multiple web searches, including this sub, and while there were some issues with the IGC cards prior to the release of AppleIGC.kext, the consensus for the last two years has been that using it solves the problems, and I'm already doing that.

2024.05.16 00:19 Linuxnub1231234 Trouble with Linux(Debian)
I have tried Linux several times and with different distros, its a really good operating system and I want to like it. However, it seems that every time I try it I run into a problem. Sometimes it boots sometimes it doesn't, sometimes I get dependency errors and failures on boot, sometimes not. The problem is when I do get dependencies or errors I have no idea where to go to fix them because I can't boot consistently and haven't found a way to get into a terminal without booting into the OS. Another problem I run into is that the OS just freezes when I login sometimes, like nothing loads no wallpaper nothing, and it just stays like that and requires me to restart or loads the things in 5 minutes. After powering the system on and off like ten times it seems to work and its very frustrating and annoying to keep having to do this.
The only dependency I can remember from the top of my head is failing for swap, and I don't know how I'm supposed to know what to fix, and I look it up but can't find any consistent and helpful information.
I am on Debian 11 with GNOME btw, any help is greatly appreciated.

2024.05.15 23:59 TJB926GAMIN Need help with (suspected) RAM problems in new build
I’m sure you’ve probably seen a problem like this before.
I’ve been working on my very first PC build, and have had little to no trouble putting it together hardware-wise thankfully. However, I am struggling to get the pc to boot up to BIOS.
The PC will turn on and everything will be lit up and connected, but I know that just because there’s lights doesn’t exactly mean it’s working. I am getting a failing light check under the DRAM tab when it attempts to boot up, so I am suspicious that the RAM is the issue.
The RAM and motherboard I have confirmed to be compatible using 3 different sources. I have tried all 4 slots, each with both RAM sticks, (2 16gb) using only one at a time, etc. The sticks don’t appear to be damaged, and light up along with the rest of the build, but don’t change color preference with it. (My old pre build was like that, so I assume I’ll need to install some software when everything gets set up) I’ve attempted to clear the CMOS as well but that didn’t seem to do anything. I watched a guide and one of the solutions was to a problem similar to what I was dealing with, which was to have only one stick in and leave your pc for around 5 minutes and it will eventually re-boot with different settings to make itself compatible with the RAM. The issue was that the ram was acting too fast for the motherboard? (Forgot exactly what it does, but it should have done something to “fix” it) So I left it for 20 minutes, no luck.
I am aware that to get past BIOS I’ll need windows OS installed, and I’ll be doing that as soon as possible, but I have started to question if that’s the reason why it won’t start up. I have also considered it being faulty parts, but the odds of both sticks being broken in the same way feels pretty unlikely. (The sticks I have are Lexar ARES RGB if that helps any) I have also suspected hardware issues or missing cords/out of place plugs, so I followed a second PC building guide and went through the steps with it to double check if I missed anything.
Any suggestions and assistance are greatly appreciated. If there are any additional details that you need, I’ll do my best to provide them. Thanks for your time

2024.05.15 23:35 Sweaty-Option8909 Some advice
So I have what I consider in my opinion to be the “holy grail” of handhelds but I’m not as happy as I thought I would be with my final addition… I have the following
- Steam deck oled running roms for ps2/gc and up
- New 3ds xl dual IPs running ds and 3ds
- Analogue pocket running game boy systems and my retro collection, nes, snes etc
- Finally a psp 1000 with IPS screen installed running psp and ps1
I installed the screen on a friends original 1000 after a bad experience with a aftermarket set of replacement parts but even after this the 1000 dpad isn’t very good, the buttons feel a little mushy and even after overclocking the psp gta games still lag and the overall ergonomics don’t feel as good as I would have hoped
I’m wondering weather to pick up a ps vita but I don’t want to play any vita games or do anything else with it apart from auto boot into adrenaline. Am I missing something, is there another handheld that could fill the ranks ?

2024.05.15 23:25 Stitch10925 Don't know how to fix GRUB - PC Always boots in MemTest
Hey everyone,
I recently installed MemTest (on Linux Mint) and now all menu options on Grub, including the one for Linux Mint, starts up in MemTest. I can manage manually via GRUB, but I don't know how to fix the problem. I tried:

2024.05.15 22:40 Able-Theory-7739 A few quality of life additions for the next patch, please?
1.) XP/Level cap toggle: Give players the choice to toggle off XP gain or set for themselves a max level cap for players who like a more traditional RPG leveling experience in Starfield.
2.) A companion command wheel: It would be great to issue orders to our companions like we could in past Bethesda titles, orders like to move forward, stick close, keep your distance, wait here, interact with this, retrieve that or attack that enemy. More often than not, when left to their own devices, companions in Starfield either just stand there stuck on terrain or attack unintended targets or wander off. It's just odd not being able to issue commands to our companions.
3.) The ability to read books/data slates without having to pick them up first: Give us something like "Press X to read" so we can read books and data slates without having to pick them up and then find them in our inventory to read them. It can lead to cluttering of the notes section of the inventory and it's a bit of a pain in the butt to have to clean them out after reading them. It would be more convenient to just be able to read a book/slate by just pressing "X" or the corresponding keyboard key to interact with the book in the same way we can eat food without having to pick it up.
4.) Remove the auto equip: It's a bit annoying when you go to move a piece of equipment like a helmet or space suit only to end up equipping it off of the floor because of the "Hold A to equip" option. This seems a bit redundant as we can just equip what we want to wear in our inventory. I think it would be best to remove this and simply just let us pick up and move gear the same as we would non-equippable items.

2024.05.15 22:06 blueraptorz The full in-depth magic os and Honor phone experience, the good and the bad..
I keep my notepad regularly updated. These were my thoughts on the first week of my new phone and then after months later with extended use. Here it is:
HONOR MAGIC 5 PRO
(My guess is that the cameras would fail first 27/12/23)
*GOOD*✓
PRICE, performance, camera, thermals, super bright, ltpo 1-120hz, ufs 4.0(won't struggle loading gallery photos), battery 5100mah amazing battery life, 220g, 3x 50mp cameras with night video + night selfies + cinematic mode + macro mode etc, ultrasonic fingerprint, 3d face unlock.
•Really nice Extended screenshots that aren't bugged (looking at you OnePlus 7 pro)
•Dual apps and dual sims
• I knew the camera was good but wow but still lacking optimisation in tough scenarios.
• I never knew screens could actually get better again , wow
•WiFi 7 or whatever is awesome
•Awesome Speed
• easy to use ui to organise the home screen
•Cool miniture multitasking windows
•extended screenshots work amazing especially on WhatsApp
•Grabbing text from images in the gallery is great but doesn't work sometimes with screenshots and webpages
•love one handed mode, easy to get to. Love the floating shutter button in the camera, I Really helps using the camera one handed.
The link to windows feature is meh but it's there.
*BAD on honor***
• The notch Vs 18:9 videos 😭
• notification issues, no matter how hard i try, some apps just won't give me notifications like push bullet. WhatsApp works fine. When I wake up in the morning and turn the wifi on the phone on, I expect the phone to scan through and give me things I've missed but nope, I got nothing. As I checked through my emails, I saw that I made a sale on eBay, but no notification or anything popped up even after turning WiFi on. After about a few minutes I go into eBay app settings, and then the notification of my sale comes through.
•Clicking WhatsApp youtube links takes me straight to the regular yt app instead of Vanced or the browser even after changing around the default settings
• I don't like how the volume buttons and power buttons are so close to each other and on the same side, I am always confused which button I'm clicking and have to always double check.
•Can't lock rotation in landscape (workaround is using the quick setting tiles app)
• can't go into specific app settings from the recent tabs either (Workaround, you just open up the multitasker, then you have to hold the app icon In the top left corner, super hidden but found it 😁)
• no offscreen gestures but doesn't matter too much
•No way to turn off honor virtual ram turbo (apparently not good for the storage, I don't need more than 12gb ram anyway)
• weak support for launchers, where switching between the launcher and the magic UI is clunky without the usual animations
• slow to switch between camera lenses with all the ois it's trying to do and sounds it's making.
6.8 inches size
EDIT GOOD Few months later:
Also, I found out that if you pull up the Google assistant when there's an image, and tap on search screen, it does exactly what Samsung s24 were advertising.
I found out that if you pull up the multitasker then long press the bin icon, you can go to thr uninstall page in settings. If you long press the app icon, it's takes you to the app settings, quite tough to findout.
With the new updates, video editing in the gallery has been greatly revamped, the camera UI is must more useful but could be a bit cleaner looking.
EDIT BAD Few months later:
• can't go below minimum brightness, when using the phone at night (please ADD extra dim feature in the eye comfort mode)
•when using app drawer, NO auto add app to home screen after downloading an app
• no double tap and empty part of the screen to turn off the screen (used this for 8+ years every day, so now I'm adjusting to using a screen lock widget instead)
•cant change icons, rename apps or remove names from apps for a clean look (I don't personally care, but this is for the sake of thoroughness)
•With/without app drawer enabled, when you hold an app on the home screen, Please add option to Uninstall the app, Rename the App or Go in to App Settings.
While using" tap to display AOD", After turning the screen off, the AOD is displayed for 5 seconds and turns the screen off which is very strange, I would like to turn this off.
PLEASE ADD long press or double tap Power button for camera. I already use double tap volume down for torch feature.
Please add NOTIFICATION HISTORY FEATURE!!!
PLEASE ADD double tap an empty part of the home screen to turn off the screen
On the AOD, after magic os 8 still I don't have the feature to display what music is currently playing.
I would like to see the addition of an object eraser in the gallery..
Putting the phone on silent or do not disturb should Automatically mute the media audio
In the camera app, When I toggle flash manually, take the photo and then close the camera app, the camera flash should reset to auto mode or off. but next time when I open the camera app, the camera flash is still turned on. PLEASE fix this!!!!!
On iPhone and other android phones - when using the timer in the camera, the flashlight will flash every second. This is not available on honor, PLEASE add this feature. The Timer should use the flash!
Screen calibration needs more customisation options, sometimes my screen feels more yellow compared to other smartphones.
Sometimes, When I pick up a phone call, the other person can't hear what I'm saying. Mic is turned on everything working but they can't hear me. I am forced to disconnect the call and call them back PLEASE fix this issue. I use Google dialer app but it's a problem in both dialers.
Tldr: i knew I'd love the speed. The battery is amazing but still a one day battery, camera is amazing and the main reason I bought this phone as I take alot alot of photos.
Last year November, there was no other phone with a sd 8gen2, crazy fast ufs4.0 with usb 3.1, 512gb storage, 3x50mp cameras and 100x zoom, face unlock etc etc, it was an absolute Bargain at £550.
After 5 years of Honor magic 5 pro, Would I do this again? I'm not sure simply because of meh Honor software, awful customisation and the software bugs Ive listed out. I am open to trying a Samsung or pixel or nothing phones tbh but I might come back after that.

2024.05.15 22:05 ArcSingerShiroh Lost Planet 2 Steam Fix
| I'm setting this post up on Reddit and on the Lost Planet 2 Steam Discussion page to make it easier for everyone to be able to google this and run Lost PLanet 2. First and foremost, before you go through the fix process, remember DirectX 9 is the option you will choose. DirectX 11 will cause crashes. I will also supply screenshots of sites and process to make it easier. - Have the game (crazy i know), if you dont you WILL find keys on sites liek G2A for close to 500 dollars. I got mine off Newegg for $20: https://www.newegg.com/capcom-lost-planet-2/p/N82E16832233146?nm_mc=AFC-RAN-COM&cm_mmc=afc-ran-com-_-GG.deals&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=afc-ran-com-_-GG.deals&utm_source=afc-GG.deals&AFFID=3816191&AFFNAME=GG.deals&ACRID=1&ASUBID=&ASID=&ranMID=44583&ranEAID=3816191&ranSiteID=I_8gdPaacpM-MDaXX75yHoL.Uft3LjiP2g
- Now we can get to the meat and potatoes, Microsoft Games for Windows. This is also referred to as the GFWL: https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/1012-microsoft-games-for-windows-live/ click the "download this file" and download the "GFWLiveSetup.zip"
- Once downloaded, extract the .zip file and download all files EXCEPT for the "wllogin_32", most systems today run 64 bit and if youre on a 32 bit im surprised programs still function but good on you.
- When you run Lost Planet 2 through steam, when you hit start game, in the top center of your screen you will be prompted to Login or Create a Windows Live account. Use your EXISTING microsoft account. Whether or not it actually logs in or creates a new one i could not tell you, HOWEVER my Microsoft login went through and im able to save my game.
- After you have logged in through Windows Live it will prompt you for a game key, you can find that in steam by clicking the gear on the right side of the game selected> Manage> Show CD Key. Enter that back inside Lost Planet 2.
- AFter the CD Key is entered you may be prompted to update Games for Windows. Accept/allow it to do so, you will ahve to exit the game to have the update begin. Once it finishes boot lost planet 2 back up and youre good to go. Enjoy playing an over decade old game!
Enjoy Lost Planet 2 in the Year of Our Lord 2024. Get to hunting Akrids comrades! Notes: if ANYTHING prompts you to remove programs DO NOT remove programs. This is the exact steps i took to ensure it works. https://preview.redd.it/z3i5jy9zcn0d1.png?width=1621&format=png&auto=webp&s=ccf11930d376429f14c32c570b61ab4819ba2874 https://preview.redd.it/22r76nw1dn0d1.png?width=1396&format=png&auto=webp&s=22b52100269bd0b500ddbf88cbb122c5e6cb66c8 https://preview.redd.it/o6hq1y25dn0d1.png?width=1655&format=png&auto=webp&s=1d2dac3ef90299d4e91fbe10bf5141c9548f3406 https://preview.redd.it/r1k140n7dn0d1.png?width=302&format=png&auto=webp&s=c271d8dd65a8bf76dc6fa6871b41a225238512ad https://preview.redd.it/l8qj0ja9dn0d1.png?width=632&format=png&auto=webp&s=542e05c164ea965717b1627776782741067868a7 EDIT: Sometimes it helps to turn on Compatibility settings to windows 7 and reduce color depth https://preview.redd.it/19oq119gvo0d1.png?width=339&format=png&auto=webp&s=d805bb81d2bf915d6fa65a3127e774a732c2688f submitted by ArcSingerShiroh to LostPlanet [link] [comments] |
2024.05.15 21:27 BinaryBitsOfFury Arch Nvidia Wayland Gnome Vscode
I previously had a NixOS installation that had a working Gnome Wayland session with a functional Vscode using the electron environment variables to force Wayland.
I just switched back to Arch because NixOS and the package manager became a burden to work with on my day to day work projects (im a developer).
I have my Arch system setup for the most part with nvidia drivers working, full disk encryption, btrfs subvolumes/snapshots, sleep and hibernation fully functional.
Oddly, I had to spend most of my afternoon today trying to force Wayland to even show up in GDM. Now, I can't for the life of me get Vscode to work on Wayland.
This is my reference for forcing Wayland to show up on GDM:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GDM#Wayland_and_the_proprietary_NVIDIA_driver https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA/Tips_and_tricks#Preserve_video_memory_after_suspend https://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/435.17/README/powermanagement.html https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Wayland#Requirements https://linuxiac.com/nvidia-with-wayland-on-arch-setup-guide/ https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GDM#Troubleshooting # add kernel param sudo nano /boot/refind.conf # add the following line to the end of the main boot option kernel params NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1 # enable systemd services for nvidia sudo systemctl enable nvidia-suspend.service sudo systemctl enable nvidia-hibernate.service sudo systemctl enable nvidia-resume.service # check if the GBM backend is being used journalctl -b 0 --grep "renderer for" # if there is no ouput, force enable the GBM backend sudo nano /etc/environment # paste these two lines into the file and save GBM_BACKEND=nvidia-drm __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia # force enable wayland with udev rules override sudo ln -s /dev/null /etc/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules
The Wayland session shows up and works after the above in GDM. But again vscode takes the whole system down when I try to launch forcing electron to use Wayland. All of this worked on NixOS..., I'm not sure how Arch is different or if I'm missing a setting....
I'm back on X11 and will continue to use it, however, I was enjoying Wayland previously and it would be nice to have it back. Anybody figure this out or have similar problems?

2024.05.15 21:25 stuffsmithstuff Do mac users seriously HAVE to use a virtual machine to update a7SIII firmware?
Hey y'all. With all the discussion about the 3.0/3.1 firmware, I remembered that when I last tried to update my a7SIII's software from 1.2 to 2.15, I got totally tripped up and never ended up figuring it out. Well, I'm back at it now — not planning to update to 3 yet, but want to do the "interim" update to 2.15 they let you do, for the AF and stability benefits mostly. (And cinetone - right?)
From what I have been able to find on the internet, there is no solution for the issue I'm having (described below) and the only answer seems to be booting Windows in a VM and using the Windows installer to update. I do not want to have to download a full set of operating system files and troubleshoot a virtual machine. Is this legit the only way to manage this with a modern mac? ———
The installer ("01_Update_ILCE7SM3V215") crashes almost instantly after I open it. I see
this window for a little less than one second and then it disappears. This happens both with the installer in its original place in the .dmg and also when the installer is copied to a folder on the desktop/directly to the desktop.
- I'm running macOS 13.6.6 (Ventura) on a 2023 16-inch M2 Max MacBook Pro. I only have one account on the computer, and it has full admin permissions.
- I have reduced system security, and ticked both the boxes underneath that option in Recovery Mode.
- I have installed the version of the Sony Driver that Sony's site says should work with Apple Silicon and OS 13. (I've actually tried running the installer several times, including copying the file to my desktop.
- I have successfully updated firmware on several a6x00 series cameras before, as well as my a7IV.

2024.05.15 18:43 Kitchen_Drummer_4107 Major Overheating Issue: Battery or Board?
I have an original RG35xx before the upgraded hardware model was released. Owned/played with it for a few hours per day. The first few weeks went by without any major problems. Love the thing!
However, it took a dump on me one day after trying out a 8bitDo wireless controller (via OTG cable+Dongle) it powered itself down while I had it charging and using the HDMI out > PC Monitor. Upon picking up the device, I noticed it was incredibly hot to the touch. I couldn't place my fingers on the lower half of the device without having to recoil from the heat. I allowed the device to cool completely before attempting to power it back on.
Everything booted up fine, my roms/saves/etc were all there and the OS was running normally. I began playing a game without any of the external hookups, just plain old handheld mode like I normally would. Upon booting a PSX title, I hadnt even fully loaded into the game before noticing that the USB-C charging port was already getting hot near my pinky fingers at the bottom. The plastic case surrounding the battery also felt warmer than usual. I returned to the main menu and just held the device tightly in my palm for a minute or so. It became increasingly hotter, eventually bordering on "too hot to handle" so I powered it down again, manually. Bringing my face closer to the device, I could smell a slight scent coming from the hot plastic/battery location.
This prompted a few frustrating days worth of failed attempts to troubleshoot the issue away. I attempted using a new SD Card and fresh flash of Garlic OS. (The CFW I was using when the first overheating issue occured), I returned to the unaltered stock card that came with the device and even tried allowing the battery to fully drain before a fresh charge and boot in case the battery was just acting oddly. Not a single thing I tried returned positive results. I eventually ordered a compatible replacement battery on AliExpress and put the thing away in defeat.
Here we are now, nearly a month later and the battery shows up in my mailbox. (I had completely forgotten about bringing the thing back to life) I was very excited to get home from work this morning to get the new battery installed for a test.
Alas; Battery replacement + all the other bells, whistles and kitchen sinks thrown at it, and it's still hotter than snot after being powered on for 10+min while simply sitting on the main menu.
I can confirm only a few things after troubleshooting:
• Using two separate, reputable SD cards (SanDisk/Samsung) flashed with compatible versions of Batocera, Garlic or Stock OS's all exhibited the same overheating issues (I'm aware this is most likely hardware related but many folks in this sub like to cry foul on the OS/SD before considering the entire complexity of each reported issue)
• New Battery still overheats (doesn't have to be charging) sigh
• This issue persists even when underclocking settings
• My refund window is well past-due and Amazon won't budge this time for me
I guess I'm here as a last ditch effort before adding it to my e-waste pile. I currently own a few other retro handhelds and thoroughly enjoy watching this market develop.
Has anyone else experienced overheating to this degree/frequency when using this or any other Anbernic devices?
Can anyone attest to Anbernic's customer service/support team? I've heard mixed reviews and decided against reaching out myself due to my purchase being made on Amazon and not through their direct webpage.
Which Retro Handheld(s) new or old would you recommend as a daily driver? I'd like to push up to GameCube/PS2 if fiscally viable. I've got a few in mind but would love to hear other's thoughts, considering I'll probably be back in the market for something like the one I'm about to lay to rest.
Thank you for taking the time to read and/or respond. Happy Gaming Ya'll

2024.05.15 17:22 djasonpenney Bitwarden + FIDO2 PIN
When I bought my Yubikeys a couple of years ago, I got them primarily for Bitwarden. But after I got that working, I went through and added FIDO2/WebAuthn 2FA everywhere I could. There weren’t a lot of sites, but a few of the ones I really cared about had it, so I went ahead and added my Yubikeys.
The one small surprise was when I added my Yubikeys to my Microsoft account. It turns out there is an optional FIDO2 feature that the vendor can set: requiring you, the user, to enter a PIN in order to use the Yubikey. So for each of my Yubikeys, I had to add a PIN to the Yubikey. This worked just fine.
Since then, I typically leave my Bitwarden clients “logged in” or “locked”. The devices are physically secure and have good software security (screen locks, FaceId, etc.) The point is I don’t regularly use 2FA on my Bitwarden vault.
This morning, however, another Redditor reported an issue trying to log in. I was sitting downstairs with my iPhone and a Yubikey, so I went ahead, logged out my iOS client, and then logged back in.
What?
I got a prompt for my Yubikey PIN. On a Bitwarden login. Enh, okay. I entered it. It all worked. No biggie. But it is definitely a change in behavior.
The point here is I have a suspicion you can’t set a PIN on your Yubikey if you are using NFC. If you use FIDO2/WebAuthn and have not yet set up a PIN, I encourage you to take a moment, using a desktop or laptop, and log out and in again. If I had not set up a PIN and I was away from my home computing center, I might have been temporarily locked out of my vault.

2024.05.15 16:54 Stiles-Micaiah Setting Up HDR Support on Linux (Plasma 6)
I’m creating this post to assist newcomers in setting up HDR support on Linux using Plasma 6. I’ve encountered partial and use-case answers, and the wiki isn’t exactly coherent. Hopefully, this guide will help someone (or preferably many people) get HDR working without spending hours on Google, Bing, and Copilot searches. Also, I used Copilot to make this more legible after typing it out. So, if bits of it sound like AI, it’s just rephrasing something I said.
IMPORTANT: - The commands provided assume you are using Manjaro or at least Arch. These distributions are known to be excellent for gaming until SteamOS 3 is generally released.
- If you’re using a different distribution (e.g., Ubuntu), adapt the commands accordingly. For instance, replace pacman -Syu with sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y.
- Be proactive but ask for help if you can't find your distros equivalent.
- Give the wiki a read anyway, the more you read the more you’ll learn. Even if it doesn’t make much sense https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Gamescope
Instructions: - Check Display Settings:
- Go to Settings > Display & Monitor and look for an HDR option. If it’s there, skip to step 5.
- If no HDR option appears, proceed to the following fixes.
- Ensure You’re Using Wayland:
- Wayland supports HDR, while Xorg (X11) does not.
- Check your current graphics platform under Settings > About This System > Graphics Platform.
- To switch to Wayland:
- Go to Settings > Colors and Themes > Login Screen (SDDM) > Behavior (top right).
- Set Auto Login to use Wayland.
- Restart your system. (There might be alternative methods; feel free to comment if you know one!)
- Driver Caution:
- Switching to Wayland may break your drivers.
- If so, run the following commands and restart: sudo mhwd --remove pci video-nvidia && sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia
- Enable HDR:
- Now that you’re using Wayland with fresh drivers, the HDR option should appear. Refer to step 1.
- Change settings one at a time or it may not apply correctly (e.g., 1080p > apply > 120Hz > apply > HDR on > apply). KDE can be quirky like that.
- Install Gamescope:
- To get Steam games running in HDR, you’ll need Gamescope.
- Install Gamescope with the following command: sudo pacman -Syu && sudo pacman -S gamescope
- Enable Steam integration: gamescope -e -- steam
- Steam Launch Options:
- Add launch options for the game you want HDR in.
- For 1080p@120Hz, the launch option might look like: gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -r 120 --hdr-enabled -- %command%
- gamescope specifies the use of Gamescope.
- The custom resolution and refresh rate are necessary (there’s a reason, but I forgot!).
- Ensure HDR is enabled in the launch options; otherwise, it won’t work.
- Testing HDR:
- After completing the steps above, HDR should work in your game.
- Keep in mind that the Steam UI will probably be very glitchy at this point. Patience and deep breaths are essential.
- I tested it with Horizon Forbidden West, and it worked phenomenally once I was in the game.
- Returning to X11 for Compatibility and Comfort:
- Repeat Step 2, choosing X11 instead of Wayland.
- Remove launch options.
- Voilà, we’re back to square one!
Caveats: - Using Wayland affects Steam significantly:
- The store page becomes unusable.
- The big picture menu (home, settings, etc.) is almost completely broken.
- You can still navigate with some guesswork.
- Wayland resets display settings on every power-on:
- Re-enable HDR.
- Set resolution (if you have a 4K screen, playing in 1080p might result in a tiny box if the desktop resolution is set to 4K).
- Often restart Steam before launching anything.
TL; DR: Dude it's an instruction set, go back and read 💀

2024.05.15 16:28 BlackRedDead How to reset MangoPeel config (wich doesn't exist where it should) for real?
Dear fellow sufferers, for full disclosure a few details before i get to the Point: 1. i'm still on version 3.4.11 of HoloOS, since the 3.5.5 debakel, wich still haven't been fixed! (i tried 3.5.17 a few weeks ago, couldn't use my monitor because even with the deck being manually set to 60FPS/Hz, my monitor complains about unsupported frequency - with 3.4.11, i can leave it at 40Hz but it will automaticly output at 60Hz with external monitor.) 2. i had my presets perfectly adjusted trough the Gamemode DeckyPlugin, an update of MangoPeel broke them and since then i can't get them to behave (visual/alignment issues) - i even completely reinstalled MangoPeel, but i guess there's a damn messed up config file, but it it NOT to be found in "home/deck/.config/MangoPeel" - that directory doesn't even exist! (yes, i have hidden files shown! - to be clear, "home/deck/.config" exists!) 3. Decky and MangoPeel are both up to Date
What i would like to achieve is to reset MangoPeel presets for certain! (and maybe get some up-to-date presets hinted i can tweak for myself - once i get back to my personal "near perfect" state, i might even share them*^^)
Thank you for your time & effort :-)
*i had a very minimalistic first overlay with just fps, time and battery - one for general performance tweaking related stuff, one for thermal/cooling related stuff and the last one with graphs for debugging - and ONLY stats that are needed for said tasks and adjusted locations, font sizes and backgrounds! - so one might argue i know a bit to well what i want, and i would have digged trough config files if i could the first time, but as said, the actual ones are nowhere to be found and i used different search engines) but when a search engine did found something, it was eighter empty or changing values in those files had no actual effect! xP (1. why some search engines outright don't find anything 2. why the hell there are so many different directories of MangoHud?)

2024.05.15 16:25 theuddy Kumori CLI Engine: Automate Image Generation with InstantID, HuggingFace, and Stable Diffusion – Featuring Gender Detection, Pose Estimation, and Detailed Logs for Focused Outputs, all via Python-based command line.

I prefer the " set it and forget it" model and letting the process run, then evaluating and refining afterwards. With that being said, I hadn't found a clean way to remove the manual (Gradio interface) way to process large sets of images, so figured I'd try on my own... What is Kumori CLI Engine? Kumori CLI Engine leverages the InstantID [ https://github.com/InstantID/InstantID\] and Huggingface diffusers via Stable Diffusion to generate images in 100% python command line interface. Why build Kumori CLI Engine? Verbose console updates: Big fan of stats/showing what is happening. Again, nothing really had the level of detail I had in mind around settings/values in the way I'd wanted them. When you run this, you'll see a ton of print logs telling you what's happening all along the path around decisions, findings, time calculations, etc so you don't feel like you won't know what's going on. Transparency is/was how I learned it, then built it in. Gender Detection: Having to manually tell the bot what it was looking at seemed redundant. Using facial landmarks, tries to automatically detect the gender from the input image and applies the appropriate prompt from CONFIGS.PY. Pose Estimation: Tries to align the most likely aligned pose from your set of poses, with the idea that I was seeing better results when the person being aligned, fit more closely to the image of the person in the pose --It detects the pose of the person in the image to better align the generated image, providing more consistent and coherent results. Image cleanup/padding: Some images just drop in a lot of the GUI interfaces if it can't find a face. Padding/zooming out and trying again has worked well. I found a lot of the images couldn't find faces in the landmark detections, so added a way to pad (and re-process) if it couldn't find the face on the first run. Also using Pillow to enhance/clean up image after generation. Automated CSV generation results: Doubling down on stats, this saves them cleanly and in a format you can use later (CSV) to give more value to your images. Logs the details of each image generation process to a CSV file, making it easy to track and analyze the outputs, to better fine-tune as "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" --so what you think looks good can be tailored based on the settings that work best for your eyes. ++ a summarization script that, when you cull your images you didn't like, it'll tell you what settings and models your eyes liked best, so you can further fine tune to your preferences. Randomization Options: I don't know what I don't know. Most tools I use today make me "hunt and peck" to find a setting I like. This offers the ability to randomly select styles, models, and poses, providing varied and diverse output images, again based on your preferences --while it runs, it'll try some of the mostly likely settings that have worked, but feel free to hard-set or change them to fit your hoped outcome. Customizable Parameters: Fine-tune settings like identitynet strength, adapter strength, number of inference steps, and guidance scale right from the configuration file again to help align to your own personal preference of outputs. Installation: Full Github repo: https://github.com/tillo13/kumori_cli_engine On Windows you only need this batch file and it'll install all for you: https://github.com/tillo13/kumori_cli_engine/blob/main/auto_install_kumori_cli.bat On non-Windows or if you like to see how the process works, the README.md file will walk you through manual install: https://github.com/tillo13/kumori_cli_engine/blob/main/README.md#manual-installation-instructions-for-all-os To modify/start using your own images, the incoming_images/ and poses/ folders are the main things to change to set your preferred images; it will crawl subfolders also within the incoming_images/ folder if you want to separate your image sets. I figured I'd share in case anyone else prefers this hands-off automated approach to image generation, or if you have a slower GPU, waiting for an image to render can take some time (I have a RTX3060). Letting it run all night and coming back to a few hundred images that I can cull/clean to then run the summarization script to tell me what models/settings I liked the best has worked well so far. I feel like there's a new thing coming out weekly (daily?) in the space lately, and would just put the ol' line in the sand to share at this point --I have a handful of future-things set to kick around, but wanted to get something out as I've been working on it for a while now, and been pretty happy with the results. Thanks for checking it out, all the code/walkthrough/instructions to use can be found in the Github: https://github.com/tillo13/kumori_cli_engine submitted by theuddy to StableDiffusion [link] [comments] |
