I have to share this story!
A few hours ago while shopping, I noticed a woman in her mid-forties with scruffy, greasy hair - like, really, really scruffy hair - crying in the corner of Asda (a British supermarket for those unfamiliar). She was wearing crocs, baggy joggers and an over-sized jumper and just looked troubled.
This lady was just crouching in a supermarket at 10pm, tears streaming down her face while holding a container of baby milk powder in her hands. I’m just frozen on aisle 26, looking behind, around and just anywhere for guidance.
Remember, this is London, the moment you interfere, you might lose your balance - specifically, your bank balance - or worse, your life.
Anyway, before I can act, she just bolts - sports mode activated on her cros of course - and runs towards the dairy section. I just hear frantic shouts of, “mommy, mommy, mommy!” and thuds of produce falling to the floor.
So, you know, naturally, I pretend I’m not hearing this chaos as people shout, “Stop” and stuff. Naturally, I continue my shop and on my way out, I overhear the security team saying, “She probably has a child at home - leave it for now and if she returns we’ll tell her to leave.”
Tell me why this woman is mixing the baby milk with normal milk and drinking it at the bus stop!? I was disorientated by what I was seeing - seriously, she was gulping it down like a newborn.
Obviously, I had been staring too Long and she noticed - naturally.
“My mum died yesterday,” she says. Honestly, I almost laughed at the way she gestured to the milk; it was a though her comment answered every question I had - lady, not at all!!
Anyway, I did the British thing and gave her my condolences and acted as though things were normal - which was HARD because she was gulping down baby milk!
Moments pass, my bus is like another 10mins away, and she’s refilling the flask she stole along with everything else.
“It reminds me of my mum this milk - slightly sweet if anything.”
At this point, I’m invested in this story of hers and engage, “Do you usually drink baby milk?”
She tells me this is the first time she has stolen in her life. All day, she had been crying, trying to come to terms with her mum’s death, felt hungry and had a strange craving for baby milk. Turns out, she had been crying in that supermarket for at least 20mins and the staff just ignored her - she kind of wanted someone to ask her if she was okay.
“Drink with me, please,” she says.
At this point, I felt slightly guilty despite her technically being a criminal, so I sat next to her, took a sip and listened to her talk about her mum - naturally.
Honestly, it was one mesmerising night. Unpredictable.
The milk tasted horrid. Naturally.

I bought two e-tickets for a 1h tour through the Royal Albert Hall, valid for Saturday, 12 October 2024 starting at 1:30PM. However, as I did not manage to get tickets for any of the RAH shows in London (I was lucky to score two decent tickets for the last show in Rome), I won't come to London, so I pass the tickets on at face value (45GBP / $55 / €55). The US has an infamously high gun ownership rate; 120%, by one measure, although that is clearly and flagrantly absurd (unless there are 75 million armed illegal aliens...). An individual ownership rate of 25-35% and a household ownership rate of 35-50% are more accurate (and legitimate) statistics.
Our violent crime rates are relatively moderate, though; a relatively high homicide rate, compared to most other "advanced" nations, but rape, robbery, and even casual violence are far less common in the US than in most of the world. For all the infamy of cities like Detroit or Chicago, you are unlikely to be the victim of any sort of crime as long as you stay out of the handful of bad neighborhoods at night, which is not something you can claim about London, Paris, Rome, or most any other major First World city.
Better yet, we can compare our history of violent crime to our history of gun control, and they simply do not map to one another, at all; there is no correlation, either way. Up until 1934, you could walk into a hardware store and buy pretty much anything you wanted, even fully automatic rifles (machine guns) and explosives, with no law against it (which didn't mean that the proprietor wasn't going to ask some hard questions and maybe choose not to sell them to you). On the other hand, walking down the street of pretty much any town with a loaded weapon on your person was a crime, but that's how much things have changed.
The 1934 National Firearms Act (NFA) ostensibly came in response to the gangland crime of the Prohibition Era... which ended in 1933. The stated intent was to regulate concealable weapons by requiring a Federal Firearms License (FFL) to deal in them... but it only covered short-barreled rifles and shotguns, machine guns, and silencers, specifically excluding pistols and revolvers, which have represented the overwhelming majority of gun crime since the 19th century.
The Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA) was supposedly motivated by the assassinations of JFK and MLK (the bill itself was stalled in Congress until the RFK assassination, after which it went through quickly), but its primary focus was to restrict interstate sales of firearms between private individuals... which had nothing to do with any of the assassinations.
In 1986, the Firearm Owners Protection Act (FOPA) had the stated purpose of addressing harassment of FFL holders by the ATF, but actually further restricted firearms, outlawing any civilian ownership of automatic weapons manufactured after 1986, and requiring ATF approval of transfers of any firearm restricted under the NFA, giving them even more tools to interfere with lawful firearm owners.
The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act (Brady) was enacted in 1993 in response to the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan, and restricted firearm rights of various groups of people, including convicted criminals, those dishonorably discharged from the military, etc... which notably would not have prevented John Hinckley, Jr. from acquiring the weapon he used to attack Reagan.
This was followed in 1994 by the Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB), which even the people who wrote the bill have been unable to definitively state which firearms were banned under, as the definition provided was ambiguous. In any case, these weapons are the least commonly used in crime, by a wide margin.
2004 and 2005 saw the Law Enforcement Officer's Safety and Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Acts, one of which expanded the gun rights of current and former law enforcement officers, and the other protected firearm manufacturers and dealers from liability for negligence... even if they break the law.
And most recently, in 2022, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, this time driven by recent mass shootings, but again, did nothing that would have prevented any of the events that supposedly motivated the law; instead, it focused on making it easier for gun rights to be restricted under "Red Flag" and domestic violence laws (which are already grossly abused), weakened Constitutional protections for investigations of firearm-related crimes, and opened up juvenile records to background checks.
None of these laws have ever had any kind of effect on crime, in any shape, form, or fashion, for reasons which are perfectly obvious, when you stop to think about it.
Automatic weapons are not useful for criminal purposes; as a military function, their purpose is to force the enemy to take cover, preventing them from shooting at your soldiers while they maneuver, and various alternatives - bumps stocks, forced-reset or 2-stage triggers, etc - will provide similar rate of fire with less reduction in accuracy.
"Assault weapons" are not even properly defined; an AR-15 is an "assault weapon," but a Mini-14 is not, despite having virtually identical capabilities. They use the same ammunition, can have the same magazine capacity, similar barrel length, size, weight, etc. The AR-15 is sleek, black plastic, though, while the Mini-14 is wood and metal; that is the only real difference, how they look.
Explosives are useful for criminals, but are so easy to make at home (no, I'm not telling you how) that restricting them is absolutely impossible.
None of these laws addressed handguns, at all, despite two of them having the stated intent of addressing concealable firearms and these weapons being used in the overwhelming majority of gun crime.
Background checks were a good idea, but the "private seller" loophole (often mislabeled the "gun show" loophole) is so big that criminals have no problem acquiring firearms, and without any kind of registration, there is no way to hold sellers accountable.
And even background checks become abusive when any opinionated doctor or vindictive ex-girlfriend can have your gun rights eliminated on a whim, when your protections against overzealous law enforcement have been curtailed, and when the system is so rigged that trying to fight for your rights will only result in even harsher punishment.
100 years ago, pretty much anyone could own pretty much any weapon, but you couldn't carry it around with you; today, there are massive restrictions on the types of firearms you can own, but most places allow you to carry them around. How does this make any sense, at all?

Fact check:

• California is not running any electric trains yet as of writing, though EMUs are scheduled to begin service on Caltrain this fall. Caltrain electrification is also known for high costs due to hiring of consultants.
• Austin does not have a subway or any rapid transit as of writing. A light rail through downtown is being planned, but while the plan initially called for a downtown subway in 2020, the tunnel was removed and replaced with surface light rail later.
• In case it has to be said, hydrogen-powered trains are currently seen as a much less proven and possibly less reliable technology than traditional catenary electric trains. This point was echoed by StreetsBlogCal, from the same state that Tibbits-Nutt praised for "electrifying" trains.
• While Chicago is indeed pursuing its Red Line Extension, even if we ignore other US cities that are expanding their rapid transit system at faster rates (LA, Seattle, etc), this directly contradicts her earlier statement in October 2023 that "In the United States, especially places that have these legacy systems, they don't do these [expansions of the system] projects anymore".

Ravens fan here. We went to the Ravens-Titans game last year, and here are some tips if you are thinking about going:
1. Register on the NFL Europe website early and often. Have various family members register on the NFL Europe site, using different email addresses. Note that each team’s season ticket holders get first dibs on tickets before they go on sale to the general public. DO NOT pay ticket brokers for tickets, they are massively overpriced and not worth it. You can always get a ticket cheaper, right up to game day. Our tickets went on sale in mid-June. Actually, registering early doesn’t matter, for the next reason:
2. Everyone will be tossed into a queue randomly the day tickets go on sale. Have all family & friends report their place in the queue, and go with whomever gets in first. Important note: The ticket site is hosted by NFL Europe. They will show you the start time for purchasing in Greenwich Mean Time. Make sure you convert that time to your time zone. For us it was 7 am EDT. Once you get online and into the queue, DO NOT LEAVE. This is an easy way to get bumped. I had my daughter watch my place in the queue while I was at work, and had her buy the tickets.
3. Speaking of the queue, do not blow a gasket when you see your spot is #229,767 in the queue:
a. All 5 NFL Europe games go on sale all at once;
b. Like you, everyone registered with 5-10 different email address and family member name combinations;
c. That number literally was our spot in the queue, and we cleared the queue in 90 minutes and got tickets.
d. Be ready to make an instantaneous decision – Don’t mess around trying to get a better seat. They go fast. We ended up getting 4 seats, not together, but in the same section.
e. If you miss out, don’t worry because plenty of fans sell them back as the Summer progresses.
4. Book air travel as soon as you know you have tickets. When you fly into London (recommend Heathrow), take the Underground right into Central London. The station is right at the Airport outside baggage claim. It’s a 45 -60 minute trip into Central London. When returning to the airport, make certain that you are getting on the line that goes to Heathrow. There is also a Heathrow Express train, but it’s only 15-20 minutes faster and costs a lot more than the Underground. Buy an Underground pass at a kiosk in the airport outside baggage claim.
5. The hotel situation in London is great, we had no issues getting a room. Recommend booking the hotel early, since you can always cancel if you don’t get tickets or change your mind. If I can make a recommendation that is convenient to a lot of attractions, including the underground to get to Hotspur stadium, check out this hotel: https://arosfalondon.com/ We had NFL fans from across Europe staying at our hotel.
6. Speaking of which, stay in Central London. Make a week out of it. The NFL and the teams usually have a week-long celebration around the city. Access to the stadium is easy via the Underground.
7. Usually the local soccer clubs are typically on break the week of NFL Europe games, and those tickets are a tough get anyway. But if you have a favorite club, schedule a tour of their stadium. It’s worth it.
8. Speaking of Stadiums, Hotspur Stadium is one of the newest and is massive. It is all enclosed around the seating areas. But the roof is open, and most seats are covered. Do not worry about the weather on game day. Sweat pants and a sweatshirt/game jersey was more than adequate. Getting to and from the Underground, however, you will be exposed to the elements. Do not bring an umbrella, wear a rain jacket if rain is in the forecast.
9. You will see jerseys of all 32 NFL teams represented at the game. Over a third of the fans are from the UK or Europe. They are just there to see “proper football”, as the person sitting next to me said. The fans get into the game, and have a really good time. The people surrounding us bought us beers and sang much of the game. It’s a ton of fun.
10. On game day, take the Tube to Hotspur Stadium. It’s about a 10 block (.75 mile) walk to/from the stadium. You can ride a bus to the stadium from the Underground, but do not expect it on the way back. The atmosphere surrounding the stadium is amazing. The stadium is surrounded by activities, including a lot of people who don’t have tickets, but are there for the spectacle. Eat a good brunch/lunch before going. Do not expect to be able to get seated at a restaurant near the stadium. And do not expect great food in the stadium, it was a major disappointment.
11. Upon conclusion of the game, it will be a massive river of people heading for the tube. I do not recommend taking the Overground train to leave, the queue can be quite long. Instead, just follow the flow of people to the regular underground stop 10-11 blocks south of the stadium. Don’t worry, the long line goes surprisingly fast. And the fans are still having a good time.

You can ride a bus to the stadium from the Underground, but do not expect it on the way back. The atmosphere surrounding the stadium is amazing. The stadium is surrounded by activities, including a lot of people who don’t have tickets, but are there for the spectacle. Eat a good brunch/lunch before going. Do not expect to be able to get seated at a restaurant near the stadium. And do not expect great food in the stadium, it was a major disappointment.
11. Upon conclusion of the game, it will be a massive river of people heading for the tube. I do not recommend taking the Overground train to leave, the queue can be quite long. Instead, just follow the flow of people to the regular underground stop 10-11 blocks south of the stadium. Don’t worry, the long line goes surprisingly fast. And the fans are still having a good time.

The sun is out, so the morning commute is packed with more cyclists than ever. It's great, to see so many on the road. But when you're cycling in central London, you're not cycling at your local park.
Don't look at your phone while cycling, don't go through red lights (no matter the peer pressure you feel) and don't pull out / change lanes without signalling and looking over your shoulder twice, first. And no matter what, pedestrians have the right of way. Go ahead and hit one if you want, they'll be the ones winning in court.
Oh, and to the pair of idiots on White City roundabout this morning - you are on one of London's most dangerous bits of road, so pushing through a red light only to end up sitting in the first lane of the roundabout where a van nearly struck you both was beyond stupid. Have some brains.
In short, London is an amazing city to cycle around, but do it safely and you'll have a better chance of survival (and of helping other people survive, too).

Cycle in the middle of a lane if it makes you feel safer, it certainly helps avoid car doors opening - but don't do it at 5mph.
Don't "race" other cyclists. 9 times out of 10, they are not racing you, they're just bettefaster cyclists making their way to work. By racing them, you endanger both of you.
Don't undertake, only overtake. It's super dangerous.
Funnelling through traffic is perfectly legal, just stop and look to see if anything is coming before you enter a new lane, as chances are you'll cycle into another bike or motorbike.
Be SO careful at a line of traffic, a pedestrian might see it as an opportunity to cross and when they pop out from behind a bus, you will strike them. Just slow down.
At junctions don't EVER be on the inside of a vehicle. they may decide to turn into the junction at the last minute and, therefore, will hit you. Just hold back until you pass the junction. Saving a few seconds will save your life.

I’ve ordered 2 boxes of ExoHealer + 2 boxes of the activation solution during the big April sales and they were delivered just yesterday. Unfortunately they weren’t stored in an ice packaging by Fillerhouse and were mistakenly routed to India and UAE by FedEx before arriving at my address in London. I’m guessing the boxes spent 24-48 hours in high temperatures before arriving.
The box says to store at 2 to 8 C but I’ve also found places that sell ExoHealer online saying it’s fine to store them at rome temperature. I’m guessing that means 25 C. Very conflicting information but I guess the manufacturer suggestion is the correct one.
Have I waisted my money and won’t see any benefits from using those 2 boxes?

Went on a tour of Plitvice National Park in Croatia today. The only other US Citizen on our bus was a boomer man in his 70s or so traveling alone.
Some of this was relayed to me by my husband as at some points of the bus journey I could not take it and put my headphones in to drown him out.
He strikes up a conversation with a young female engineer traveling by herself. She is in her 20s from the UK and visibly a person of color, which unfortunately is relevant to the story.
He inquires where she's from. She answers that she's from London. You can guess what he asks next:
"But where are you really from?"
It didn't get any better from there.
He peppered her with questions, which turned out to be more like an opportunity for him to humble brag. Oh, she's staying in a hostel? Well, personally he could never stomach that, but he's 'not a snob or anything'. His room in Split overlooks the central square.
The young woman actually got separated from our group. I could not tell if this was intentional to get away from boomer McGee but she didn't seem that shaken as I might have been in the same situation, considering that we were a 3 hour drive up the mountain from where our accommodations were.
He sits with her at lunch along with two French girls. He has talked endlessly about his time spent living in Paris, so he's proud to show off his French skills.
She's sitting next to the window on the ride back. Of course he sits next to her, uninvited. Asking about how she felt about being lost, he talks about his own bad travel experiences, like how he lost his phone getting mugged in Paris once. Of course it was necessary for him to mention the muggers race in this anecdote and also speculate that they "must have been from Mali", as if he could possibly know this. He adds, “not that it matters, of course”, even though he must have thought it mattered enough to include it in his anecdote.
He mentions that he is by himself because his wife is "crazy about the grandkids" and sent him off by himself. My interpretation was that his family couldn't stand him and sent him on a tour of the Dalmatian coast to have some peace.
The young engineer then tactfully says that she's had a long day and was hoping to use one of the many empty rows to stretch out, and that she might move a few rows up to do so. She is sitting in the window, he is sitting in the aisle.
"Oh.... so you need me to move, then?" the boomer asks.
Yes, dipshit, she needs you to move.
The woman moves a few rows up but at no point does she sleep. I see her taking videos out the window on her phone of a fortress as we return to Split.
I thought it was notable that despite being the only other Americans on the tour, the boomer has not said one word to me or my husband, an interracial same sex couple. Not that I would have wanted him to.
We arrive back in the city and the poor engineer, unfortunately, is not free of him. The boomer comes waddling up to her. He's invited the French girls (also in their 20's) for some rose and would she like to join?
I think I hear the woman audibly sigh before she collects herself and answers that she has an early day the next morning and needs some rest. Boomer seems disappointed but thankfully does not push the issue.
I think the most unfair part of the whole thing for me was that none of what Boomer McGee was doing rose to the level of harassment. There wasn't any one thing he said where I felt like I could have stepped in and told him to leave her alone, even though it was clear to me that his attention was unwanted. It was all just idle chitchat on his part, but the pervasiveness and persistence of it was the only thing he was doing wrong. I know that women have to deal with this level of not-quite-harassment all the time, and for that I'm truly sorry.
If she reads this somehow, to the young engineer that had to put up with this all day other than that brief respite when you were lost in the park, I'm so sorry you had to deal with this loser all day. Also to the French girls, I hope you got a free bottle of rose and promptly ditched the boomer.
