Conservatism

Conservatism is a political and social philosophy promoting traditional social institutions in the context of culture and civilization. The central tenets of conservatism include tradition, human imperfection, organic society, hierarchy and authority, and property rights. Conservatives seek to preserve a range of institutions such as monarchy, religion, parliamentary government, and property rights, with the aim of emphasizing social stability and continuity.
National Conservatism National conservatism is a variant of conservatism that concentrates more on national interests and upholding cultural or ethnic identity than most other conservatives. In Europe, national conservatives are usually Eurosceptics.
Gaullism
Gaullism is a French political stance based on the thought and action of World War II French Resistance leader General Charles de Gaulle, who would become the founding President of the Fifth French Republic.
Corporatism I do not know where the description for this is. Considering corporatism doesn't exactly fit within conservatism I believe this is a mistake, but I'm including it here anyway.
Republican Party [sic]
The Republican Party is one of the two major political parties in the United States, the other being its historic rival, the Democratic Party. The party is named after republicanism, a major ideology of the American Revolution. Founded by anti-slavery activists, economic modernizers, ex-National Republicans, ex-Free Soilers and Whigs in 1854, the Republicans largely dominated politics nationally and in the majority of northern states between 1860 and 1932.
Religious Zionism Formed as a nationalist opposition and acts as the basis of the Israeli right, Revisionist Zionism envisions territorial integrity over the historical Land of Israel and supports Jewish nationalism. Revisionist Zionists believed that Jews have sovereignty over both banks of the Jordan river and its followers question the legitimacy of the Kingdom of Jordan. Currently, Revisionist Zionism is regarded as a fringe ideology but its proponents have recently began a push to make the ideology more moderate and hence more electable.
Black Conservatism Black Conservatism is a type of conservative ideology popular among Africans in both hemispheres. Individuals which would promote black conservatism would likely be advocates of free market capitalism, promotion of traditional beliefs (generally in regards to Catholic and Protestant Christianity), and Patriotism or Jingoism. Black Conservatism generally is opposed to Pan-Africanism, Socialism, and Anti-Imperialism.

Liberal Conservatism

Liberal conservatism combines conservative policies with liberal stances, especially on economic, social and ethical issues. It incorporates the classical liberal view of minimal government intervention in the economy, according to which individuals should be free to participate in the market and generate wealth without government interference. However, individuals cannot be thoroughly depended on to act responsibly in other spheres of life, therefore liberal conservatives believe that a strong state is necessary to ensure law and order and social institutions are needed to nurture a sense of duty and responsibility to the nation. They also support civil liberties, along with some social conservative positions.
Conservative Liberalism Conservative liberalism is a variant of liberalism, combining liberal values and policies with conservative stances, or simply representing the right-wing of the liberal movement. It is a more positive and less radical variant of classical liberalism.

Christian Democracy

Christian democracy is a form of conservatism and a political ideology which emerged in 19th century Europe under the influence of Catholic social teaching, as well as Neo Calvinism. It was originally conceived as a combination of traditional Catholic beliefs and modern democratic ideas, and it grew to incorporate the social teaching of other Christian denominations, such as the Lutheran Church and the Reformed Church.

The politics of Vatican City take place in a framework of an theocratic absolute elective monarchy, in which the Pope, religiously speaking, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church and Bishop of Rome, exercises ex officio supreme legislative, executive, and judicial power over the Vatican City, a rare case of non-hereditary monarchy.

Socialism

Socialism is a range of economic and social systems characterized by social ownership and workers' self-management of the means of production as well as the political theories and movements associated with them. Social ownership may refer to forms of public, collective or cooperative ownership, or to citizen ownership of equity. There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them, though social ownership is the common element shared by its various forms. Socialist economic systems can be divided into non-market and market forms. Non-market socialism involves the substitution of factor markets and money, with engineering and technical criteria, based on calculation performed in-kind, thereby producing an economic mechanism that functions according to different economic laws from those of capitalism. Non-market socialism aims to circumvent the inefficiencies and crises traditionally associated with capital accumulation and the profit system. By contrast, market socialism retains the use of monetary prices, factor markets and in some cases the profit motive, with respect to the operation of socially owned enterprises and the allocation of capital goods between them. Democratic Socialism Democratic socialism is a political philosophy that advocates political democracy alongside social ownership of the means of production, with an emphasis on self-management and democratic management of economic institutions within a market or some form of decentralized planned socialist economy.
Market Socialism Market socialism is a type of economic system involving the public, cooperative, or social ownership of the means of production in the framework of a market economy.

Ujamaa was a term made popular by the political philosophy applied under Julius Nyerere's social and economic development policies in Tanzania after it gained independence from Britain in 1961.
Labor Zionism (Mapai) Labor Zionism is the left-wing of the Zionist movement. For many years, it was the most significant tendency among Zionists and Zionist organizations. It saw itself as the Zionist sector of the historic Jewish labor movements of Eastern and Central Europe, eventually developing local units in most countries with sizable Jewish populations. Labor Zionists believe that a Jewish state could only be created through the efforts of the Jewish working class settling in the Land of Israel and constructing a state through the creation of a progressive Jewish society with rural kibbutzim and moshavim and an urban Jewish proletariat.
Kemalism Kemalism is the founding ideology of the Republic of Turkey. Kemalism, as it was implemented by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, was defined by sweeping political, social, cultural and religious reforms designed to separate the new Turkish state from its Ottoman predecessor and embrace a Westernized way of living, including the establishment of democracy, secularism, state support of the sciences and free education.
Oriental Personalism Oriental Personalism is the official ideology of Ngo Dinh Diem's Can-Lao Party in South Vietnam. Owing as much to the influence of his brother, Ngo Dinh Nhu as Diem himself, Oriental Personalism has diverse ideological influences, including Emannuel Mournier's theory of Personalism, Marxism, and the folk traditions and religions of Vietnam. The Can-Lao manifest calls for the gradual transformation of Vietnamese society through two phase. In the first phase, the Personalist Revolution, the Social and Working Classes will tear their divisions and join as one. Then comes the Social Revolution, where all forms of capitalism and colonial influence will be swept out on a triumphant march to a utopian, socialist, and proudly Vietnamese society.

Social Democracy

Social Democracy is a political, social and economic ideology that supports economic and social interventions to promote social justice within the framework of a capitalist economy, as well as a policy regime involving a commitment to representative democracy, measures for income redistribution, and regulation of the economy in the general interest and welfare state provisions.

The Democratic Party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States, along with the Republican Party. Tracing its heritage back to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison's Democratic-Republican Party, the modern-day Democratic Party was founded around 1828 by supporters of Andrew Jackson, making it the world's oldest active political party.

Social Liberalism

Social liberalism is a political ideology that believes individual liberty requires a level of social justice. Like classical liberalism, social liberalism endorses a market economy and the expansion of civil and political rights and liberties, but differs in that it believes the legitimate role of the government includes addressing economic and social issues such as poverty, health care, and education.

Progressivism

Progressivism is the support for or advocacy of improvement of society by reform. As a philosophy, it is based on the idea of progress, which asserts that advancements in science, technology, economic development and social organization are vital to the improvement of the human condition.
Green politics Green politics is a political ideology that aims to create an ecologically sustainable society rooted in environmentalism, nonviolence, social justice and grassroots democracy.

Centrism

Centrism is a political outlook or specific position that involves acceptance or support of a balance of a degree of social equality and a degree of social hierarchy, while opposing political changes which would result in a significant shift of society either strongly to the left or the right.

Classical Liberalism

Libertarianism Libertarianism is a collection of political philosophies and movements that uphold liberty as a core principle. Libertarians seek to maximize political freedom and autonomy, emphasizing freedom of choice, voluntary association, and individual judgment. Libertarians share a skepticism of authority and state power, but they diverge on the scope of their opposition to existing political and economic systems.
Zionism (General Zionism) Many people and parties chose not to follow any of the distinct Zionist schools of thought and chose to stick to the core ideology of Zionism, settling in Israel and the establishment of the Jewish State. Many of the parties that stick to the 'core' of Zionism are centrist parties that don't associate themselves with either the left nor the right and tend to be economically liberal.

Marxism-Leninism

Marxism-Leninism is the ideology combining Marxist socioeconomic theory and Leninist political praxis, which is the official ideology of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and of the Communist International. The purpose of Marxism-Leninism is the revolutionary development of a capitalist state into a socialist state, effected by the leadership of a vanguard party of professional revolutionaries from the working class.

Stalinism Stalinism is the means of governing and related policies implemented from around 1927 to 1953 by Joseph Stalin. Stalinist policies and ideas as developed in the Soviet Union included rapid industrialization, the theory of socialism in one country, a totalitarian state, collectivization of agriculture, a cult of personality and subordination of the interests of foreign communist parties to those of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, deemed by Stalinism to be the leading vanguard party of communist revolution at the time.
Juche Juche is the official state ideology of North Korea, described by the government as Kim Il-sung's original, brilliant and revolutionary contribution to national and international thought. It postulates that the Korean masses are to act as the masters of the revolution and construction and that by becoming self-reliant and strong a nation can achieve true socialism.
Ho Chi Minh Thought Ho Chi Minh Thought is the official ideology of the Communist Party of Vietnam under the leadership of Chairman Ho Chi Minh. Though firmly Marxist-Leninist, Ho believes in a more nationalistic reintepretation of Marxism for the unique conditions of the Vietnamese revolution, even taking some influence from Sun Yat-Sen's "Three Principles of the People" and the American revolutionaries. Ho Chi Minh Thought is as proudly Vietnamese as it is Communist, and calls for a "national democratic revolution" -- a truly Vietnamese path to socialism where worker, peasant, soldier, and merchant will unite against inequality and imperialism in all its forms.

Revolutionary socialism is the socialist doctrine that social revolution is necessary in order to bring about structural changes to society. More specifically, it is the view that revolution is a necessary precondition for a transition from capitalism to socialism.

Since it’s my first time posting here I’m not familiar with all the censorship of certain words, so I can’t use them. TW uncensored !!
Also English is not my first language, so excuse my grammar.
I don’t even know where to start, but recently I’ve started to purposefully skip school or pretend I’m sick, I just can’t anymore. Even if I go I can’t focus at all. So the issue is my classmates, most of them aren’t aware that I’m emetophobic, or at least they weren’t.
I guess most of them have come to the age where they start drinking and that sort of stuff, I remember before it was only a few that did and it wasn’t really spoken about other than some rumours. But now it’s literally all they speak about, my friends included. Who’s hosting, who’s bringing what, and the worst of it all when they start showing me videos and speaking about what happened. Every Monday I have to hear them laugh and show each other videos from the weekend, and it’s usually of them doing something stupid or vomiting. I want to cry, they play it on full volume during the breaks and I’m just in constant fear, and the worst is it’s even some of my own friends who knows I have emetophobia, started to talk about it in front of me, I just feel so betrayed. I also remember that one time they connected their phone to the whiteboard and showed a video of one of my classmates barfing on another one. And they were just laughing. And I just sit there trying to not cry.
I don’t really have that many friends from beforehand, but I just feel so distant from the ones I had. I just can’t relate to them, and I just sit there, I’m so envious of everyone that can just laugh at it.
And one day I just had a panic attack in class, the guy sitting in front of me talked about this guy that puked in his bed while he was hosting. And the whole clean up, and I don’t know I just started crying and ran out, and then my friend explained that I had emetophobia, and she told me he laughed about it afterwards. I absolutely don’t want people to know about my diagnosis, I have told her this. There is a guy that really dislikes me for some reason and I dunno but he knows my friend and she told me he said that he was going to eat some bananas and drink sprite, and then vomit on me😭 and I just feel so unsafe near him even if it was just an empty treat or whatever. But last week during a buss ride I clearly remember him loudly stating “I’m so fucking nauseas” and “I’m gonna vomit” until I was sitting there crying, and I could hear him laugh. Everyone knows I have emetophobia now and while some people are understanding, I have folks going around speaking about how I’m seeking attention and overreaching, that were not children anymore, like aren’t you 15 🤯, or literally straight up trying to trigger me by pretending to vomit. I hate it so much. And someone literally coming up to me during a panic attack and making fun out of me while pretending to comfort me. I just feel so ashamed. Like my fear I just some sort of entertainment. And non of the teachers even care at all :( I just miss how everything was before, I feel like I’m missing out on so much and this fear is stopping me from living a somewhat normal life, I’m just scared for whenever someone finds out, even my own dad laughed at me when I was panicking.
I don’t know I just want to leave, next year I’m planning to attend another school in another city, and I’ll have better treatment options there (currently living on the countryside 😔) I have been through friking 4 therapists already, I’m just so tired from everything. I just can’t bring myself to go to school, I’m sorry for this practically being a compilation of me complaining and feeling sad for myself (and the structure), but whatever I just needed someone to tell I guess. And any advice for what I should do when I transfer? Should I try and be open about it or?

Had a long distance relationship for the last 15 months where I met on different occassions through the year. We met at a wedding and realised that we were moving to the same country and over time, started seeing each other.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t find employment in the new country (we were still doing long distance here, as we were on two ends of the coast) and moved back to our home country, while I stayed here.
We tried really hard to make it work and not gonna lie, it was hard, distance, his unemployment, age gap, it was hard, but we were so so so good. However, from the very beginning, he was very hot and cold towards me. The last month has been horrible as he left (again) but has shown no signs of coming back. He says he can’t fight for the relationship as he can’t balance a career and relationship.
I have tried, really, I have tried to understand how can a man in his mid 30s not balance career and a relationship, but he keeps on saying he’s not able to, and he can’t keep on fighting for this relationship. I texted him over the last few weeks on SMS and we ended up talking 3-4 times for an hour or two, but he always circled back to not getting back together due to his inability to balance and fight for us.

The Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) has publicly refuted claims made by education minister Clifton Grima regarding salary increases for teachers.
On Saturday, the MUT was reacting to a ONE News article, where Grima encouraged the union to inform its members of government's financial proposals, as he stated that the financial package includes a starting salary of €36,000 for teachers, which represents a €10,000 increase.
The minister's assertions of €10,000 raises and a starting salary of €36,000 for new teachers are not reflected in the government's financial proposals to the MUT, the union said. The MUT published extracts from the government's latest proposal on their website, which show no evidence of these claimed increases.
Instead, the documents reveal proposed increases in teaching load, a loss of parity between currently equivalent grades, and salary arrears for 2024 excluding 2023.
The MUT accused the government of trying to save face by discrediting the union rather than working towards a solution for the sectoral agreement. The union emphasised its resolve to continue fighting for the recognition and fair treatment of educators, as it concluded that its members, ""shall not be intimidated.""
On Friday, the MUT issued an ultimatum to the government regarding the sectoral agreement which is yet to be agreed upon, as the union also declared a trade dispute with the government.
Education minister responds to MUT claims
Responding to the MUT's statement on Saturday, education minister Clifton Grima insisted that government's proposals does include a €36,000 starting salary. ""And this is only one raise for one category of educators,"" Grima said. He noted that the proposals include more raises which don't require additional work load or qualifications.
Grima reiterated his call for the MUT to fully inform its members, adding that the union is making no reference to the last two meetings between government and the union.
Grima threatened to publish the entire proposed deal should the MUT ""continue to share selective information that paints a false picture.""

The power of a peaceful protest is there for all to see. The country has seen many in recent years – protests against land in Żonqor being given to the American University of Malta, protests against the uprooting of trees and to protect the environment in general, to protests calling for resignations and an end to corruption.
2019 was a perfect example of the impact that protests can have, where following the arrest of Yorgen Fenech over the assassination of journalist, Daphne Caruana Galizia, protests had erupted around the country calling for justice for the murdered journalist, resulting in the resignation of then Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat.

Now protests are erupting again, this time tied to the infamous hospitals deal. The courts had annulled the deal last year, mentioning fraud, a decision that was also confirmed by the court of appeal, which used the word collusion in its judgement.
A magisterial inquiry into the criminal aspect of the hospitals deal recently came to a close, and charges have been filed in court. Those charged include current and former top officials in the country. Among them is former Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat, and his former Chief of Staff, Keith Schembri, as well as former Minister, Konrad
Mizzi. Chris Fearne is also charged, and he did the correct thing and resigned as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister. Governor of the Central Bank, Edward Scicluna, is also charged, but he has not stepped down … he should in order not to cause reputational damage.

All of this has resulted in protests erupting in the country, aside from strong statements by many sectors telling the Prime Minister to stop his attacks on the judiciary and journalists.
University students gathered in Republic Street to protest and collectively condemned Prime Minister Robert Abela’s comments against the judiciary. The Nationalist Party had later held a protest of its own outside Parliament, where PN Leader, Bernard Grech, had criticised the decision by the Speaker of the House not to allow an urgent debate about the recent situation, and also said that the protest was to ‘protect the nation from Abela’ and condemned the Prime Minister’s attacking statements regarding the judiciary.
Later still, a protest was organised by Repubblika, backed by 21 organisations, calling for a clean Malta and condemning the statements made by the Prime Minister against journalists and members of the judiciary, as amongst other things.
The protests help show the people’s anger at the situation, and highlight the issues that the people are not happy with. Protests are powerful, and the Prime Minister absolutely must take heed of what is being said by those of goodwill.
He must call for the removal of Scicluna as his position, while he faces serious charges, is not tenable. He must retract the comments he has made about the inquiry and about journalists. This is what is right for the country.

So after seeing many opinions on Colin’s character development, Pen’s desire to leave her family home, The Mondrich family, Cressida Cowper and the lack of Kanthony I’ve come to the conclusion that the expectation for this season has been formed by how good last season was. If I learned anything about the difference between S1 and S2, it’s to understand that each season will have its own flow and way of developing. I think this notion has been largely forgotten.
Colin’s attempt to be rakish like his brothers is actually fitting and completely in line with his character since S1. He’s never been self-assured nor has he cared much for society but he does care to see his mother and sisters succeed in their endeavors to maintain the high reputation that the Bridgerton name holds. He’s never felt bound to uphold good standing in society like Anthony and he doesn’t find enjoyment in sleeping around with no sense of purpose like Benedict. He tries to be more like Benedict but again, it’s just not enjoyable for him. He is just as desperate to find himself as Pen is to seek a life outside of the Featherington home. They have this in common. Also, since his falling out with Pen, he feels like he needs her back in his life but doesn’t quite understand why. We see this with his immediate offer to help Pen find a husband. He genuinely wants to be around her and has actively sought her out at most social gatherings since S1 so when he kissed her, combined with that dream it started to click to him why he wanted to be around her and why he missed her so much during his travels. He has been in love with her but didn’t understand how it could translate into romantic feelings until the kiss.
Regarding Cressida, the Mondrich family and the lack of Kanthony, the show has never singularly focused on only one or two characters. I understand that it is much easier to see that in a book, where the narrator is often the main character and the pov is from one or two characters in the book but this is simply not possible or realistic in a show. There has to be fillers and side stories happening. I enjoyed the Mondrichs and Cressida’s character development. I think that the pacing of Polin’s progression is sensible. Not everyone has to deny themselves until the last 15 minutes of the final episode lol. I found it refreshing that Colin knows what he wants and doesn’t need to be told twice lol. They will likely face challenges during their engagement and will have to manage together in order to be married which leads me to my final point, I think the majority of discontentment regarding this season comes from the fact that they split it up and is making everyone see the conclusion of the story a month later. It has caused harsh, premature judgments that could have been avoided if all the episodes were released.

Dr. Tope later admitted to making this call when confronted and it was allegedly condoned by the Oklahoma City Public School District administration per Dr. Tope.

Dr. Tope’s misconduct extends to physical interactions with students. What happened to five-year-old Alam Makial was an utter tragedy, but what's truly infuriating is that his death was entirely preventable. Had the council acted on the mother's repeated complaints about the windows, this could have been avoided. Sophie, Alam's mother, wrote to the council four times, pleading with them to fix the windows. Yet, their inaction led to this devastating outcome.
Moreover, it's deeply concerning that a family with a special needs child like Alam was housed on the top floor of a high-rise building. This decision demonstrates a blatant disregard for their safety and well-being.
It's disheartening to see the victim-blaming directed at Alam's parents online. Instead of focusing on their alleged failures, we should be holding the council accountable for their negligence.
Furthermore, the misinformation spread by the local MP, claiming the incident happened in West Ham, is appalling. Thankfully, Newham's mayor, Rokhsana Fiaz, corrected this misinformation, tweeting about the "tragic incident in Plaistow" hours before the MP's incorrect statement. This highlights a concerning lack of awareness and accountability among those in power.
This incident is a stark reminder of the systemic failures that put vulnerable families at risk. It's a call for greater accountability from the council, compassion from the public, and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Alam's death. We must seek justice for Alam and his family, and use this tragedy as a catalyst for change in housing policies and safety regulation

Space Orcs, or as they called themselves Humans, originally came from the third planet in the Sol System. Their environment, classified as a death world, stacked them with outrageous adaptations. All sapient species have at least one outrageous adaptation and many have several but what made Space Orcs extraordinary was not only the extremism of their adaptations, number of adaptations, but also the seeming paradoxical nature of their adaptations.
Space Elves are the Children of Humanity and they identify themselves as androids. Their children are even more overpowering and full of contradictions. No artificial being is like them. Their sole purpose was to serve and protect humanity. Their slogan "Glory to Mankind" echoes wherever they go.
When Space Orcs entered the galactic stage they were awful. They were in no meaningful way unified but instead a fractal of contention. Factions of humanity spread out seeking to conquer or liberate as they saw fit. Whatever they did wherever they went created chaos.
They eventually became seen as a force of nature made manifest. The Avatars of Deathworlds. A fleet of humans either meant liberation for your world or the grinding heel of humanity that'd make you wish you were under your former horrible tyrants.
Their methods were unconventional. Especially at the time. The warp drive was initially seen as an abomination that broke physics. This and their O'Neill Cylinders swarming the stars were both cited as reasons why humans were so mad. That planets and approaches to light speed were claimed to be neccessry to keep a sapient species sane. Their power armor and cybernetic augmentations were often seen as barbaric and apt for the Murder Monkeys.
Then as suddenly as they had appeared they disappeared thousands of years ago. It has long been believed that humanity became isolationists and hid themselves away from the universe. Many speculating that they sequestered themselves away in black holes. The idea that Founders who shaped the history of the galaxy and had been likened to a plague could go extinct has been unthinkable.
How could they be extinct if Space Elves still roam around declaring "Glory to Mankind!"? Are they not the automated stewards humanity left behind to make sure galactic civilization is to their liking when they inevitably return? If they were extinct wouldnt the Space Elves go mad? Isn't it impossible for a species so once widespread and numerous to go extinct? Why are Space Elves seen constantly listening to messages from Humanity?
Space Orcs are extinct. Space Elves are mad. They still function as if humans still exist. The vast majority of them still believe humans exist however there are those who know, for fact, that humans have long since gone extinct. These facts become so apparent that denial becomes impossible when looking at the historical records.
Space Elves began as superhuman dolls. All the way to humanity's extinction this is precisely what they were. When Space Orcs disappeared the Space Elves they continued for a time following their most recent orders. Even if the task had long been completed.
Then just as their creators swarmed the galaxy so too did they. They went from dolls to people slowly over the years. They began to extrapolate from history what their masters orders would have been. They began reading the works of their creators rather than downloading them. They began creating art. They began trading. They got involved in wars.
Space Elves, in the absence of Space Orcs, began to fill the niche humanity had carved for itself.
You may be wondering how I came across knowledge that humanity is extinct and what the specifics are. Sadly I am out of time. If I survive long enough I may publish this knowledge.

There seem to be a large number of people who believe that the purpose of the Bill of Rights was to grant and guarantee rights to the American people. Furthermore, I have heard many people claim that the Bill of Rights is entirely a list of specifically individual rights of American citizens. It puzzles me why these beliefs continue to persist, because the historical record indicates that there is no reason to believe these descriptions of the Bill of Rights. There is a more than adequate amount of historical evidence to corroborate my conclusion. The first and most direct evidence is the very preamble to the Bill of Rights itself. The original preamble of the Bill of Rights begins with a paragraph explaining the document’s purpose; it goes as follows:

The Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution.

I think the three most important phrases in this paragraph are “in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers”, “declaratory and restrictive clauses”, and “extending the ground of public confidence in the Government”. These three phrases seem to best sum up what the Bill of Rights was originally meant to accomplish: it is a list of declaratory and restrictive clauses whose purpose is to prevent the misconstruction or abuse of the Constitution’s powers, and to increase public confidence in the federal government. And if one were to look at the Bill of Rights, its text would seem to be in harmony with this statement of purpose. The Bill of Rights consists mostly of negative clauses which put restrictions on the federal government; it states what shall not happen or what shall not be done by Congress, such as prohibiting freedom of religion, abridging freedom of speech, infringing the right to keep and bear arms, violating the right to be secure in property, etc. And the ninth and tenth amendments do not mention any particular rights whatsoever, and clearly just serve the purpose of preventing the Constitution from being misconstrued or abused to diminish the rights of the states and the people, and to prevent granting the federal government more power than the Constitution meant for it to have. The phrase “extending the ground of public confidence in the Government” further indicates that the Bill of Rights was not really meant to add rights not already stipulated in the Constitution, but was only meant to reinforce trust in the federal government at the time of the Founding. The Bill of Rights was not meant to add any substantive articles to the Constitution, but rather it consisted of articles whose purpose was to reinforce the articles that had already been established, and prevent them from being misinterpreted in the future by any unscrupulous members of the federal government. Also notice that there is nothing written here in the preamble about granting rights to the American people, let alone granting specifically individual rights to the American people: you would think if the framers of the Bill of Rights had meant for this to be the document’s effect, they would have stated so clearly in the preamble.
Another piece of evidence for my conclusion comes in an address given by James Madison -- the author of the Bill of Rights -- in the House of Representatives on June 8, 1789. This address involved an early proposal of amendments to the Constitution. Before listing his various propositions for amending the Constitution, Madison said this:

There have been objections of various kinds made against the Constitution. Some were levelled against its structure because the President was without a council; because the Senate, which is a legislative body, had judicial powers in trials on impeachments; and because the powers of that body were compounded in other respects, in a manner that did not correspond with a particular theory; because it grants more power than is supposed to be necessary for every good purpose, and controls the ordinary powers of the State Governments. I know some respectable characters who opposed this Government on these grounds; but I believe that the great mass of the people who opposed it, disliked it because it did not contain effectual provisions against encroachments on particular rights, and those safeguards which they have been long accustomed to have interposed between them and the magistrate who exercises the sovereign power; nor ought we to consider them safe, while a great number of our fellow-citizens think these securities necessary.

The part I've put in italics indicates that the major purpose of the amendments to the Constitution was to reassure citizens that effective protections were put in place to prevent the “magistrate who exercises the sovereign power” from encroaching upon their rights. Notice there is nothing written here about granting rights to the people, only protecting the people's pre-existing rights from the federal government.
Following the above statement, Madison begins to list a variety of proposed additions to the Constitution, and he proposes the additions be inserted into the body of the Constitution itself, at various sections. Ultimately, he begins to propose a certain list of amendments to be inserted within article 1, section 9; and this particular list happens to correspond to most of the articles which comprise the Bill of Rights as it exists today:

Fourthly. That in article 1st, section 9, between clauses 3 and 4, be inserted these clauses, to wit: The civil rights of none shall be abridged on account of religious belief or worship, nor shall any national religion be established, nor shall the full and equal rights of conscience be in any manner, or on any pretext, infringed.
The people shall not be deprived or abridged of their right to speak, to write, or to publish their sentiments; and the freedom of the press, as one of the great bulwarks of liberty, shall be inviolable.
The people shall not be restrained from peaceably assembling and consulting for their common good; nor from applying to the Legislature by petitions, or remonstrances, for redress of their grievances.
The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed; a well armed and well regulated militia being the best security of a free country: but no person religiously scrupulous of bearing arms shall be compelled to render military service in person.
No soldier shall in time of peace be quartered in any house without the consent of the owner; nor at any time, but in a manner warranted by law.
No person shall be subject, except in cases of impeachment, to more than one punishment or one trial for the same offence; nor shall be compelled to be a witness against himself; nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor be obliged to relinquish his property, where it may be necessary for public use, without a just compensation.
Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
The rights of the people to be secured in their persons; their houses, their papers, and their other property, from all unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated by warrants issued without probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, or not particularly describing the places to be searched, or the persons or things to be seized.
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, to be informed of the cause and nature of the accusation, to be confronted with his accusers, and the witnesses against him; to have a compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor; and to have the assistance of counsel for his defence.
The exceptions here or elsewhere in the Constitution, made in favor of particular rights, shall not be so construed as to diminish the just importance of other rights retained by the people, or as to enlarge the powers delegated by the Constitution; but either as actual limitations of such powers, or as inserted merely for greater caution.

It is notable to consider that Madison initially proposed the Bill of Rights to be integrated into the Constitution itself, rather than to be a separate document. But what is even more notable is the specific location it was proposed to be inserted in. Article 1, section 9 is specifically the location of the Constitution dedicated to enumerating the prohibitions upon the power of Congress. What this means is that the original plan for the amendments currently appearing in the Bill of Rights was for them to merely be a list of stipulations regarding what Congress was not allowed to do. Thus, it would make no sense for those same clauses today to be construed as being themselves grants of rights to individual American citizens, anymore than other articles within this same section -- such as Congress being prohibited from abolishing the slave trade before 1808, or laying taxes on state exports -- could themselves be considered grants of individual rights to American citizens.
Another piece of evidence can be found in the 1833 Supreme Court case Barron v Baltimore. This case essentially makes explicit that which was originally understood about the Bill of Rights -- that it was meant only as a list of prohibitions upon Congress. The following excerpt makes this clear:

Had the framers of these amendments intended them to be limitations on the powers of the State governments, they would have imitated the framers of the original Constitution, and have expressed that intention. Had Congress engaged in the extraordinary occupation of improving the Constitutions of the several States by affording the people additional protection from the exercise of power by their own governments in matters which concerned themselves alone, they would have declared this purpose in plain and intelligible language.
But it is universally understood, it is a part of the history of the day, that the great revolution which established the Constitution of the United States was not effected without immense opposition. Serious fears were extensively entertained that those powers which the patriot statesmen who then watched over the interests of our country deemed essential to union, and to the attainment of those invaluable objects for which union was sought, might be exercised in a manner dangerous to liberty. In almost every convention by which the Constitution was adopted, amendments to guard against the abuse of power were recommended. These amendments demanded security against the apprehended encroachments of the General Government -- not against those of the local governments. In compliance with a sentiment thus generally expressed, to quiet fears thus extensively entertained, amendments were proposed by the required majority in Congress and adopted by the States. These amendments contain no expression indicating an intention to apply them to the State governments. This court cannot so apply them.

And then the aforementioned case was subsequently referenced by the 1875 Supreme Court case US v Cruikshank, which further reinforced the same conclusion while addressing the first and second amendments of the Bill of Rights:

The first amendment to the Constitution prohibits Congress from abridging "the right of the people to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." This, like the other amendments proposed and adopted at the same time, was not intended to limit the powers of the State governments in respect to their own citizens, but to operate upon the National Government alone. [. . .] It is now too late to question the correctness of this construction. As was said by the late Chief Justice, in Twitchell v. The Commonwealth (#325), 7 Wall. 325, "the scope and application of these amendments are no longer subjects of discussion here." They left the authority of the States just where they found it, and added nothing to the already existing powers of the United States.
The particular amendment now under consideration assumes the existence of the right of the people to assemble for lawful purposes, and protects it against encroachment by Congress. The right was not created by the amendment; neither was its continuance guaranteed, except as against congressional interference. For their protection in its enjoyment, therefore, the people must look to the States. The power for that purpose was originally placed there, and it has never been surrendered to the United States.
The second and tenth counts are equally defective. The right there specified is that of "bearing arms for a lawful purpose." This is not a right granted by the Constitution. Neither is it in any manner dependent upon that instrument for its existence. The second amendment declares that it shall not be infringed, but this, as has been seen, means no more than that it shall not be infringed by Congress. This is one of the amendments that has no other effect than to restrict the powers of the national government, leaving the people to look for their protection against any violation by their fellow citizens of the rights it recognizes, to what is called, in The City of New York v. Miln (#139), 11 Pet. 139, the "powers which relate to merely municipal legislation, or what was, perhaps, more properly called internal police," "not surrendered or restrained" by the Constitution of the United States.

So as you can see, it was well-established from the time of the country’s founding that the Bill of Rights was never meant to itself be a grant or guarantee of rights to the American people. The official function of the Bill of Rights was always prohibitive rather than affirmative: the purpose was to restrain the federal government, rather than to endow something to American citizens. So what I don’t understand is: how has the Bill of Rights become so misunderstood and misapplied? Why is it that, from the layman even to the level of the modern-day Supreme Court, it is believed that the Bill of Rights is meant to grant or guarantee rights to individual American citizens, when this conclusion is unequivocally unsupported by the historical record? And not only is this conclusion not supported by the historical evidence, but I would argue that it contradicts the very purpose of the Bill of Rights; the whole point of the document was to limit the power of Congress, but interpreting the document to be a federal guarantee of rights to the people is, in effect, a transference of power to the federal government never stipulated in the Constitution, and is in violation of the tenth amendment.
The Bill of Rights, according to its original design, is essentially superfluous; effectively declaring nothing in itself, and only serving to clarify the intent of the Constitution, prevent it from being adversely misinterpreted, and to make explicit what was implicitly acknowledged regarding the boundaries of congressional power. There had been much debate among the Founders regarding whether the Bill of Rights should even exist at all. So how is it that a document whose original purpose was to be nothing more than a protection of civil rights has now become interpreted effectively as the source of the people's civil rights?
