PC keeps dying randomly and not sure how to diagnose the problem, please help!
Sorry for the long post. I have always been a Mac user and this is my first PC. I built it myself. I probably haven't used all of the correct windows terms and my experience and knowledge of windows is pretty poor.
TLDR: My PC has started randomly shutting itself off suddenly, as if somebody went and ripped the cord from the wall. How do I go about diagnosing this issue?
I think it is either hardware related or an issue with the BIOS, as this has happened early on in the boot process, right as the BIOS screen pops up. I checked all the connections to the Mobo and none were loose that I could find. The power cable is firmly planted in the socket. I put in a fresh CR2032 battery into the mobo but that didn't help.
SPECS:
  • OS**:** Windows 11
  • Motherboard: Gygabyte x570s Aero G
  • CPU: AMD Risen 9 5900X
  • GPU: EVGA GEFORCE RTX 3090
  • PSU: Corsair RMX850x
  • RAM: GSkill Tridentz 32GB (2x 16gb)
  • Main Drive: Samsung 990 Pro NVME 2tb
  • Scratch/Secondary Drive: Samsung SSD 1tb (SATA)
  • AIO: Fractal Design S36
PROBLEM & TROUBLESHOOTING: It's pretty random when it happens but at first it seemed like it was when I was writing to hard drive (downloads, moving files, installing programs, nothing too intense). However it has started happening so frequently that within 15 minutes of booting up the computer it's shutting off.
At first I thought it was a software issue and decided to do a full system reset - erase everything, install fresh copy of windows. Then it lost power during one of the early stages of the reset - I think the system was still "preparing" as I am still able to boot into windows and my files are still there. I can't even get the computer to stay on long enough to do a factory reset.
Then it happened during the boot process, before the BIOS loads. I am pretty sure this indicates a hardware or BIOS problem more likely - correct?
As stated in TLDR, I looked over all the connections to the Mobo, PSU, etc. and everything seemed fine. I swapped out the generic CR2032 battery that keeps the BIOS settings (maybe?) - this didn't help but it did make the system forget the PIN and I now have to enter my password to log in.
Is there a log I can look at to see what was happening at the moment it lost power? (Even if there is, is it possible for a layman to read it?) Any sort of self-test? Obvious things to look at? Please any help is greatly appreciated.

Apple limits the development and testing of third-party browser engines to devices physically located in the EU, forcing browser makers to have staff in the EU
  • Apple's new policy under European law allows third-party browser engines on iOS devices in the EU but with a challenging limitation: development and testing must be done on devices physically located in the EU.
  • This geographical restriction creates a significant barrier for browser-makers, especially for those whose development teams are based outside the EU, limiting their ability to compete.
  • Prior to iOS 17.4, Apple mandated all web browsers on iOS or iPadOS utilize Apple's own WebKit rendering engine, restricting competitive differentiation and browser engine innovation.
  • The European Commission has initiated an investigation into Apple's practices to determine if they comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), aimed at ensuring fair competition and choice in the digital sector.
  • Despite the new policy allowing for third-party browser engines in the EU, significant concerns persist about the imposition of Apple's restrictive terms and their potential to limit competition.
When Apple announced its plan to comply with the DMA by allowing alternative browser engines in the EU, developers were concerned that supporting a separate EU browser could be problematic. These concerns were not unfounded. One industry veteran described the contract terms as "bonkers" and doubted that any vendor would agree to them, highlighting the broad and sweeping nature of Apple's conditions as an attempt to circumvent much of the DMA by contract, which he labeled as "certainly bold."
"Apple isn't serious about supporting web browser or engine choice on iOS," Parisa Tabriz, VP of engineering and general manager of Chrome at Google, wrote in February. "Their strategy is overly restrictive, and won't meaningfully lead to real choice for browser developers."
The geographic restriction imposed by Apple raises peculiar operational challenges, such as a hypothetical scenario where a security issue arises and the top expert, located in the US, must physically travel to the EU to test and fix the issue on a real device. This example underscores the impracticality and rigidity of Apple's approach to compliance, shining light on the intricate dance between regulatory demand and corporate response in the tech landscape.

2024.05.19 01:39 pwliao23 google.com not working

Lately I've noticed AdGuard using a lot of memory and my Mac heating up, and that seemed to have been fixed by a workaround on here (changing the DNS to a non adguard one). Another issue is that Google.com in macOS Safari would stop working. It still works in my Chrome. The fix would be turning AdGuard off and back on. I know many have experienced the former issue, but has anyone else experienced the latter (the google.com failing to load one)?
Edit: I was having issues updating a YouTube channel / video description and as soon as I turned AdGuard my changes were able to be saved.

2024.05.19 01:12 Ryan_kleym How to Set Up pCloud WebDAV for RetroArch Cloud Sync on Apple Devices

Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a step-by-step guide on how I set up pCloud with WebDAV to enable cloud syncing for RetroArch on my Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV). After some trial and error, I found a method that works seamlessly, though it requires a premium subscription to pCloud for WebDAV access. Here’s how you can do it:
Why pCloud?
pCloud offers reliable WebDAV support, which is essential for cloud syncing with RetroArch. It also has dedicated apps for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, ensuring a smooth experience across all Apple devices.
Steps to Set Up pCloud WebDAV for RetroArch:
  1. Create a pCloud Account and Upgrade to Premium:
    • Sign up for a pCloud account if you don’t already have one. • Upgrade to a premium plan to enable WebDAV access.
  2. Set Up a Folder in pCloud:
    • Log in to your pCloud account via the web or app. • Create a new folder named “RetroArch Saves” (or any name you prefer).
  3. Configure WebDAV Manager App on iOS:
    • Download and install the WebDAV Manager app from the App Store. • Open the app and tap “Add server.” Fill in the server details as follows: • Name: pCloud RetroArch • Hostname: webdav.pcloud.com • Port: 443 (default for HTTPS) • Base Path: /RetroArch Saves (or the path to your designated folder) • Secure Connection: Ensure this is enabled • Username: Your pCloud username (email address) • Password: Your pCloud password • Save the configuration and test the connection to ensure it can access the pCloud folder.
  4. Configure RetroArch for Cloud Sync:
    • Open RetroArch on your Apple TV (or other Apple device). • Navigate to Settings > Saving > Cloud Sync. • Toggle “Enable Cloud Sync” to ON. • Set “Destructive Cloud Sync” based on your preference (OFF for safer backups, ON for direct overwriting). • Set “Cloud Sync Backend” to WebDAV. • Enter the WebDAV details: • Cloud Storage URL: https://webdav.pcloud.com/RetroArch Saves • Username: Your pCloud username (email address) • Password: Your pCloud password
  5. Testing and Verification:
    • Save a game in RetroArch to create a save state. • Log in to your pCloud account and check the “RetroArch Saves” folder to verify that the save file has been uploaded.
Additional Tips:
• Regular Checks: Periodically check the “RetroArch Saves” folder in pCloud to ensure saves are being uploaded as expected. • Backup: Keep a local backup of your save files just in case you need to restore them.
Conclusion:
This method allows you to securely back up your RetroArch saves to the cloud and access them across all your Apple devices. Although it requires a premium subscription to pCloud for WebDAV access, the setup is straightforward and works reliably.

2024.05.19 00:19 salanalani self-hosted WordPress not working only on iOS devices

I am self-hosting WordPress on Proxmox LXC via Tunrkey WordPress, and have NGINX reverse proxy with Let's Encrypt to point my domain (gg..net) towards my WordPress Proxmox LXC. The website is using the default theme and I have no other themes installed and zero plugins installed. The website is viewable from my PC, MAC, Android phone, but only iOS phone saying "Site can't be reached" with ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED (same error in iOS Safari or iOS Chrome). I am using my domain (https) to reach my WordPress from each of those devices.
My WordPress site health only has one issue reported "Page cache is not detected but the server response time is OK" which does not seem related.
I first thought it is something to do with my NGINX setup, but I have another host (configured inside the same NGINX) pointing to another LXC (inside the same Proxmox) that uses Asp.Net web server on Apache, and my iOS deceives able to view that Asp.Net website. So, it has to do with something in WordPress, I guess.
I have updated everything from Proxmox, NGINX, WordPress, etc... to latest versions but nothing helped.
Any ideas?

2024.05.18 23:55 lgats Check your Altitude / Elevation from Android and iOS

If you are on a mobile phone with location-services enabled for your browser, the easiest way to check your elevation and altitude is via the website https://elevation.place
Alternatively, there are some built-in ways to check your altitude that vary depending on if you have an iPhone (iOS) or Android phone

On iOS:

  1. Compass App:
    • Open the Compass app. If you don't see it, you might need to download it from the App Store.
    • The altitude is displayed at the bottom of the screen along with other information like your current location and heading.
  2. Apple Maps:
    • Open Apple Maps.
    • Tap the "i" button in the lower-right corner and select "Show Elevation" (available in certain regions and on some map views).
  3. Third-Party Apps:
    • My Altitude: This app uses GPS and barometer data to provide accurate altitude readings.
    • GPS Status: Another app that shows detailed GPS information, including altitude.

On Android:

  1. Google Maps:
    • Open Google Maps.
    • Search for a location or use your current location.
    • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to view details about the location. If available, the altitude will be listed.
  2. Google Earth:
    • Open Google Earth.
    • Navigate to your location. The altitude is shown at the bottom of the screen along with coordinates.
  3. Third-Party Apps:
    • Altimeter GPS: This app provides altitude information using GPS data.

Using a Web Browser:

For both iOS and Android, you can use online tools:

How can I calibrate my phone's altimeter for more accurate readings?

Calibrating your phone's altimeter can improve accuracy. Here are some methods for both iOS and Android:

On iOS:

  1. Compass Calibration:
    • Open the Settings app.
    • Go to Privacy > Location Services > System Services.
    • Toggle on Compass Calibration.
  2. Manual Calibration:
    • Use a known altitude reference point (like a topographic map or a benchmark elevation).
    • Open an altitude app that allows manual calibration (e.g., My Altitude).
    • Enter the known altitude to adjust the reading.
  3. Recalibrate Barometer:
    • To recalibrate the barometer, place your phone in a location with a known altitude and let it sit for a few minutes to stabilize.

On Android:

  1. Google Maps Calibration:
    • Open the Google Maps app.
    • Tap the blue dot representing your location.
    • Select Calibrate Compass and follow the on-screen instructions.
  2. Manual Calibration:
    • Similar to iOS, use an app that allows for manual calibration (e.g., Altimeter GPS).
    • Enter a known altitude to adjust the reading.
  3. Recalibrate Barometer:
    • Similar to iOS, place your phone at a known altitude and allow the barometer to stabilize.

What are the differences in accuracy between using GPS and barometric pressure for altitude measurement?

Both GPS and barometric pressure can be used to measure altitude, but they have different strengths and limitations:

2024.05.18 23:49 coffeeprogrammer Andriod password manager

Hello,
I use my Android phone for many things. But I have a big problem with passwords. I use email aliases for just about everything. So the only google email I use is to login to the Android OS itself. I used different email addresses for walmart amazon spotify hulu an exercise app and many different apps. The problem is for every app I have to type in a different email and password. It is really hard on the little phone screen and some apps tend to forget the password. Is there a way where I can use a password manager that will fill in that information automatically in the apps? I have used google password manager in the past. That works on the desktop when I sign into chrome browser. I have also used LastPass and Bitwarden. Currently, on the desktop, I just have FireFox remember my passwords. What can I use to have the emails and passwords available on desktop (Linux/Windows) and my Android devices? Something like LastPass or Bitwarden would be welcome.

I have seen some custom keyboards but I see in some forums that mention that the input lag they have is too high, I currently have a Razer Deathstalker v2 Pro TKL however suffered a liquid spill and does not work properly.
Something I forgot to mention is that I plan to use this keyboard on Windows and MacOS operating systems.

2024.05.18 23:08 sky-builder Using OpenAi api to make $10k/month revenue building Ai apps

Hello, Idris here from indieniche. This week I want to share a summarised version of my interview with Daniel Nguyen, A Product Engineer generating $10k/month building AI apps
You can find the full case study here

Q: Hello! Who are you and what product are you working on currently?

I'm Daniel Nguyen. I'm an entrepreneur based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I've been building multiple products: KTool, BoltAI, PDF Pals

Q: What is your backstory and how did you come up with your idea? Do you have any partners?

I've been a product engineer for more than 12 years. Then one day, I discovered Indie Hacking and found it fascinating. I quit my cushy job to start building in public.
I decided to learn more about generative AI & OpenAI API and hopefully find a good freelance gig. I did land a couple of interesting gigs, but what is more interesting is I found a new product idea: BoltAI - a better way to use OpenAI & other AI services on macOS. I started it purely to learn more about SwiftUI development & OpenAI app development (the so-called "AI wrapper"). It's now my top revenue-generating product.
While building BoltAI, one customer asked about the ability to chat with PDF natively on Mac (another "AI wrapper" idea). I found it interesting and so I decided to build it. PDF Pals recently reached 700 paid customers (about 23% of my total revenue in 2023) And finally, I built ShotSolve as a lead magnet for BoltAI (engineering as marketing, or side project marketing). It was welcomed by many Mac users and so far, has brought 1500 visitors to BoltAI.

Q: Take us through the process of building the first version of your product MVP.

When I started, I didn’t expect BoltAI to be commercially viable. It comes from my pet peeve of switching back and forth between ChatGPT web UI and native Mac apps like Xcode or Apple Notes. Unlike VSCode, there is no Copilot for XCode and I have the habit of writing blog posts in Apple Notes so I figured I need a tool to invoke ChatGPT right within these apps. So I decided to build the MVP in a weekend. The app was ugly but I managed to ship it anyway.

Q: How did you get your first customers for your product (Free or paid users)

I tweeted about it, and posted it to multiple communities asking for feedback: IndieHacker, Reddit, WIP… It went semi-viral and early adopters started to use the app. I got valuable feedback and improved the product accordingly. Some of them converted to paid customers.

Q: Since you launched your product, What has worked to attract customers

Doubling down on what works mostly. That's social media (X/Reddit), email newsletters, and paid ads.

Q: How is your product performing currently, and what are your plans for the future? Can you share your current metrics and revenue figures?

BoltAI is doing great. I plan to support business customers better, and will kind of "pivot" into B2B. Currently, most customers of BoltAI are prosumers: freelancers, developers, or content writers. I believe it would be much better if I could sell directly to businesses.
Read the full case study here
We put several hours into this research and it covers mostly all aspects:
This story inspired me a lot, I love growth and building profitable businesses, so I hope you will feel the same energy from it! If you find this a lot useful , Let’s connect togetherto read more when I interview founders like this

2024.05.18 23:07 MeringueAlarming5807 Help Needed: Missing Text in Pages Document on MacBook Air and iMac

Hello everyone,
I’ve been working on a document in Pages for years, but recently I’ve noticed that a lot of text is missing. Has anyone else experienced this issue? I’m worried about continuing to edit the document, as it contains very important information and I fear losing more content.
Is there a way to recover the missing text or prevent this from happening in the future? Should I consider using a different application for writing? It's a lot of written material, so transferring it to another application, especially on Windows or Chrome, would be a big problem. I primarily use a MacBook Air and an iMac, mostly the MacBook Air.
Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your help.

2024.05.18 22:55 pointthinker Geofence automations coming on for no reason while I am home

Today, out of the blue, I have had Automations come on for when I leave home (geofence about 4 blocks), but I was sitting at home both times. Has this happened to others?
I did not update to latest iOS (or pad or mac) because of the old photo zombie comeback bug. So it is not the update.
Automations are for turning on music when I leave, adjusting thermostat. One other might also come on to activate motion sensors. There may be a fourth for the phone that seems to be happening too. So this seems to indicate that the phone itself seems to think it is past the fence and triggers all the home automations and the one iPhone automation.
While I am here, none of these should activate and, for years, never did. It is just so strange for geofencing to apparently think I am not home. Twice in one day too. Ideas as to cause?

2024.05.18 22:44 1000Zebras 2017 Intel MacBook Pro (semi-busted display): What would you do?

Hi,
So, I've got an intel macbook pro 15 inch retina just gathering dust. It's actually a decent machine even by today's standards (though OS can't be upgraded past Ventura):
I'm bummed about the screen, but I figure I can just run it as a headless server and it's all good ,and I have a little portable USB C screen that otherwise works in a pinch (or the built in one is still slightly usable if i need to take a peek at things, but not for actual work), I'm a bit torn as to my best options though.
At the end of the day, I'd like to be able to run Windows, MacOS, and, primarily, Linux on it to host a lot of the amd64 architecture only projects that I cannot seem to get to run on my other baby, an Orange Pi that does most my self-hosting heavy lifting. The two main holdouts that for the life of me I can't seem to get to work on arm64 at the moment are ERPnext and Netbox (I've tried some hackery with various docker files that some people say they've gotten to work, but...well...ain't nobody got time for that lol). I also do pretty consistently run across other projects that seem interesting but are compiled only for amd64 platform.
So, back to the matter at hand. What would you guys do? Currently the machine is setup with two separate partitions initially created to run Windows and MacOS. MacOS is the only working OS on it though as I was going to just dual boot Ubuntu with MacOS and be done with it, but then I got to thinkin'...
Should I :
  1. just dual boot MacOS and Ubuntu (or, actually, probably dietpi, which is great) and call it a day?
  2. Attempt to install Proxmox on only the spare windows partition, then run a linux VM and windows VM on top, so that I'd be able to switch between all 3?
  3. Wipe the whole thing, install Proxmox as base, then run VMs of Linux, Windows and MacOS at will? (is MacOS easy to install as a VM?)
  4. Wipe the whole thing and partition in thirds and install each OS natively?
Regardless, I'm obviously going to need a fancy bootloader of some sort. It's been a long time since I've messed with them. Is GRUB still just the way to go?
If you have a minute and wouldn't mind, when answering please include a brief overview of the steps you'd take to achieve your dream setup give the constraints of the machine. I'm somewhat fluent in navigating most of this stuff, so you don't have to go into a lot of detail, just more curious about the overall approach in steps.
Thank you, in advance, for your insights.

My free adblocker for Safari: AdBlock Bolt
Hello everyone,
Did you know you can block ads in Safari? I'm pleased to let you know that possible, for free, using my app AdBlock Bolt !
It focuses on efficiency and privacy (not a single data is collected).
https://preview.redd.it/kg5r6vmjv81d1.png?width=100&format=png&auto=webp&s=3cf8e71ee02ce3a24d4c26bd3208dfd2ef8a5bbd
Last year I've brought two major update to the app:
  1. Reworked its UI with an eye-catching big toggle (went from UIKit to SwiftUI as well) and several improvements such as download times and effectiveness.
  2. Added a premium feature called Bolt+ which allows to block ads and trackers even more widely as it works on a system-level and not only Safari. (Note that Bolt main feature is still free since the beginning)
Since then I was able to work on several updates to bring overall improvements :
  • Translated in even more languages (now available in 10 languages)
  • Bolt+ is available as a one-time purchase and no longer only on a subscription basis
    • Bolt+ subscribers are able to upgrade to the one-time purchase if they want
  • The app has been brought on macOS and visionOS too
  • New icon and AppStore screenshots
  • ...
Even though it is a small app it still allowed me to learn many things along the way : swiftui, content-blocker, network extension (dns-settings), subscription, in-app purchase, temporary price changes, app store optimization and more.
Bolt uses Content Blocker for Safari, available since ≥iOS9. Bolt+, to cover the whole system, is a DNS based blocker: uses ≥iOS14 Network Extension.

If you want to have a look, the app is available on the AppStore : https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id1041834536 (free)
If you have any comments/feedback/question, let me know!
