Crohn's vs microscopic colitis?

2024.01.23 03:55 Alacri Crohn's vs microscopic colitis?

I have been diagnosed with Crohn's for most of my life, though I haven't had what doctors consider a "proper" flare for about a decade. a few months ago I had a lot of diarrhea/stomach pain and had a colonoscopy and upper endoscopy to look at what might be causing the issue, where they found some inflammation in my lower GI tract that they told me was a form of microscopic colitis (another type of IBD) and was not Crohn's.
they put me on a mild steroid (oral entocort ec) and the diarrhea got better but... everything else got worse. now I'm having bloody stool with mucous in it, which I was under the impression doesn't happen with microscopic colitis? as well as increased abdominal pain.
I was wondering if anyone else here had both of these diagnoses and could help me differentiate between the two? I am not 100% sure how they're different other than Crohn's being capable of causing permanent damage to the intestine/GI tract and microscopic colitis being milder, and doing no permanent damage. I know they're both inflammation, and are separate forms of IBD. it honestly feels a little like my doctor is trying to find a reason other than Crohn's for this and that she isn't taking me seriously. has anyone had similar experiences?

2024.01.18 18:11 Ok_Ambition_4230 Rare IBD (eosinophilic colitis) - WWYD treatment wise

Hi all! I have diagnosed EC. My symptoms are pretty well managed on 3mg of entocort. Unsuccessful with mesalamine or doing entocort taper - I could not tolerate being off.
Still with some mild colitis on colonoscopy and with elevated eosinophils.
My GI said we could try to push for a true remission with entyvio. Since my diagnosis is rare, it is kind of trial and error. I have an appt in April with an allergist who specializes in eosinophilia.
If my symptoms are mostly well controlled (still have some urgency right when I get up, but rest of the day is usually fine), should I just stay the course? Or should I push for full remission with biologic?
Any opinions? Or experiences?
Thank you in advance!

2022.11.09 22:04 FinestSilver Need help with weight loss plateau (lifestyle and weight loss details included)

I started to seriously commit to losing weight back in March of this year, and since then I have lost about 50 lbs, starting from 260 lbs. However, I was steadily losing weight by about 1-2 lbs per week until mid-October, where I haven't changed in weight (209 lbs) in 3 weeks. I did start working out at home around that time, and brushed it off as muscle gain since then, but it's been 3 weeks now and I still haven't changed in weight (better than going up in weight I guess).
Lifestyle and eating habits:
I calorie count closely and have been since March, putting myself between 1800-2000 calories daily, with one day off a week (Saturdays). On my off day, I usually don't eat more than 2500-3000 calories. I do not count macros, but try to fit in a balance of nutrients where I can. I work at a smoothie store in Canada (Booster Juice) and on my work days I have one smoothie at around 350 calories and 28g of protein. Honestly I usually just eat whatever fits in my calorie limit for the day. I also intermittedly fast, eating no food past 8 pm until 8 am the next day. I work out at home with a combination of resistance bands, low-weight dumbbells (35lb is the maximum), and body weight exercise. This is accompanied with a 2km power walk, and in the summer I walked or rode a bike everywhere in my town. I only drink either water or on occasion coke zero, I currently do not drink alcohol due to a medication I am taking until December. I take medication for Ulcerative Colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease that also sometimes affects what I can and cannot eat.
I am wondering if this pause in weight loss is temporary, or an effect of my current medication (Entocort EC, aka Budesonide), or due to working out again.

Moving up to 20mg tomorrow! šŸ¤žšŸ»šŸ¤žšŸ»
I must have the most chilled psychiatrist out there. Spent a good 10 minutes explaining in detail how I felt I was regressing recently after 3 weeks at 5mg and 6 weeks at 10mg and when Iā€™d finished going through all my symptoms he simply said,
Ā« No worries. You responded positively when first upped to 10mg, you just need a higher dose. Weā€™ll move you up to 20mg and youā€™ll soon be feeling better. Ā»
This isnā€™t a doctor who rushes you out in 5 minutes, each appointment lasts 30-45 minutes. He listens attentively and is able to reassure me that what Iā€™m feeling is just symptoms of an illness that is perfectly treatable and that this will pass.
This correlates well with my past experiences, those of friends/family whoā€™ve been through this and the many positive posts Iā€™ve read in here.
Hereā€™s hoping this will lift the dark clouds!! šŸ¤žšŸ»šŸ¤žšŸ»

2022.05.24 01:43 neverhooder Guess I'm new to this and not sure how to deal.

Hi y'all. I'm still in the "how could this be happening to me" stage of things, but I'm hoping this is a place I can find a little mental relief? Anyways, I hope it's okay if I share my story. So...I got diagnosed with UC during my first (and now will be only) pregnancy last November via a flex sigmoidoscopy. It stuck around and progressively got worse until I gave birth here in late March. Lots of bloody diarrhea and mucosal farts, they had me taking Mesalamine suppositories, but those were about as helpful as a raincoat in the shower.
Post partum has been really rough. I had a very hard pregnancy aside from the UC. Gestational diabetes, eternal morning sickness, crazy weight gain, anemia, the works. I've always been one of those ridiculously healthy people who never gets sick or anything. It was a big adjustment.
Now this. I had a colonoscopy on 5/2 because the UC was starting to get worse now that there wasn't a baby there to squish it down I guess. More violent eruptions, more abdominal pain, all of that. Doc prescribed Mesalamine enema and oral. No response. So he added entocort ec. Still no response. I ended up in the ER at one point a couple of weeks ago due to the pain. They prescribed me, in addition to everything else, a very heavy dose of prednisone (40mg) I can't breastfeed my baby without having to set her down to run to the bathroom. I can't walk like I want to be able to. I'm still recovering from pushing out a human. And now they're telling me that because I'm not responding to the Prednisone concoction, I'm going to need to go on Entvyo iv infusions for the rest of my life? What does that even mean? Is there no other options for me?
This all feels so touch and go. Like...no one, and I mean no one in my family on either side has had anything like this ever. Just me. I'm 33 years old. I'm scared and I just want to focus on being a new parent but I don't get to. Why is this happening to me? Is there no end in sight? I have to be dependent on a medical care system for the rest of my life that I hate. I'm lucky we have insurance now but is this it for me? am I trapped? I've always been a fruit and vegetables diet kind of person. Do I not get to be who I was anymore at all? If I'd never gotten pregnant would this have never happened? I'm not even recovered from that. It takes months.
I'm sorry y'all for the deluge. I'm just lost right now and I don't know what else to say or do.

I started with value investing, still have a value portfolio. Read every book I could find on the subject and every book I could find on Munger, Buffett e.t.c and that was all for about 20 years. Then the WSB craze and GME hit the news, and I was intrigued, got my level 4 options approval and bought some GME. Luckily (or unluckily) I made money on one of the Gamma squeezes. I then wasted 6 months thinking I new what I was doing, tried ā€˜The Wheelā€™ did it all.. I then applied what I did with Value Investing to Options.. Read every book, watched every video and read every forum I could.. Iā€™m doing well now again, Iā€™ve recovered from my insanity. The reason I gave this background is I wanted to be clear, Iā€™m a prolific reader, and Iā€™m reasonable at value investing. But for options trading Iā€™m very new, ignoring GME, Iā€™ve only been profitable for the last 4 months. So my recommendation of books shouldnā€™t carry much weight, Iā€™m too new to the game. None the less, I found the following to be the most helpful in my journey and lead me to finding an approach that works for me. (For the last 4 months) (If you donā€™t know anything about options at all then definitely a beginner book as a primer, Options Trading: QuickStart Guide - The Simplified Beginner's Guide To Options Trading (QuickStart Guidesā„¢ - Finance) Clydebank Finance) Options as a Strategic Investment - Lawrence G. McMillan Option Volatility & Pricing: Advanced Trading Strategies and Techniques - Sheldon Natenberg Positional Option Trading: An Advanced Guide - Euan Sinclair Edit: My name was based on Dr Livingstone, the explorer.. As Iā€™m exploring Reddit/Options and WSB.. Thatā€™s how it started anyway.. I wish I could delete Diamond, what an idiot I was.. 20 years of ignoring the stupid and then I got sucked in at a moment of weakness.. Anyway.. I know Scotland, but not well, only as a visitor, lived in Northumberland for a little while.

why are you gatekeeping something like this? the "i'm older i know better" argument is why those dipshits lost so much on GME. you'd think you might take that as an example that maybe you're the one that doesn't know what they're talking about. Or if you're very reasonable, you'd realize life isn't black and white and that just magically trading for X amount of time doesn't just make you "a good trader".

Well I don't follow AMC so I don't know whatever happened in March, but from the same website I linked, the max FTD in early march was 2,853,150 million on 3/5, 2,392,366 on 3/8, and 483,175 on 3/9. The trading volumes on 3/8 and 3/9 were 114.3 and 150.4 million, respectively. Considering the shares delivered on those days were 0.4% and 1.2%, of the daily trading volume, I'd say they probably were. I'm not an AMC or anti-AMC person (I still have GME from January), but your statement of 1.2 BILLION shares FTD is just amazingly outrageous.

It's not a hedge against anything... the whole argument is that because it's gone up more than inflation it's a hedge against inflation, also "scarcity". Scarcity is not an argument when there's a gazillion shitcoins going around, gold is scarce and it didn't beat inflation. Having beat inflation doesn't mean anything either, by that logic BTC was a terrible investment this year, GME back in January was a better idea.

Excellent post... to add a bit of additional info to the OP's comments for those that may not be quite as familiar with the company and opportunity. This is a company at $1.5B market cap that has $50B of contracts signed for it's *phase 1 only* already. CEO has said they could sell out the entire project tomorrow if they choose which would be ~3x the revenue. Company was ridiculed for using $8.50/$9.50 TTF/JKM ( Europe & Asia ) LNG prices in their projections a year ago and those are now at $31-$36 ... at current prices they could finance and pay back the entire project in 1-2 years and be left with a fully paid off facility that will print money for a generation or two. To put that opportunity in perspective... at current prices the company would throw off $10B-$20B *PROFIT* Per year for a company with a $1.5B market cap now.

>I personally trust public health officials over CEOs and executives It is actually in their best interest for the vaccines to overcome the Omicron variant. They will sell the boosters regardless, but if the boosters lose efficacy enough, they will have to replace their booster stock as countries bought boosters for years to come, not "old" or "new" design of boosters. Look at Pfizer for example, they developed Delta and Beta specific vaccines and never used those because their original vaccine maintained high efficacy. If they had to use those then that would render current stock useless. After MRNA CEO has said that it is likely that the vaccines lose efficacy against the Omicron, MRNA stock dropped a lot, which you would think would actually boost the stock based on your logic. In my opinion, the Omicron variant is much more dangerous than the Delta. It seems to have milder symptoms but it reduces the urgency of people to vaccinate, and as such allows for higher spread and higher potential for more lethal mutation.

I donā€™t want to entirely dog on WSB or the New Shiny Thing on Reddit. Thereā€™s something to be said for having your finger on the pulse of the hot topic of the day. However, best to have a base formed on your own DD and comfort zone first. 10K and 10Q filings are an indispensable piece of DD, so keep working those. Along those lines is the quarterly earnings call transcript, to see where the CEO and CFO are focusing their energy and placing their marbles. Also do some top-down analysis on a macro level. Are EV companies overvalued? What is the future of brick and mortar retailers vs online, and how will that impact the real estate market? Is there a future for print newspapers? How should I differentiate between miners of gold, silver, copper, lithium, cobalt, coal, etc? Can the transition to clean energy eliminate fossil fuels if renewables canā€™t generate enough thrust to power passenger air travel? All of these are relevant to your research. (This is also why most people advocate for index fundsā€¦ getting out ahead of the market requires dissertation-level research that is going to be hit-or-miss at best, regardless of how many hundreds of hours you put into tour DD.)

All those stocks you're thinking of are great, no question, but now, today, how do you choose the best one? A quickie way to decide between super good stocks like the ones youā€™re thinking of: Within Fidelity, each stock has a Fundamental Analysis section - valuation, growth, etc. Each panel is divided into 5 segments. I like *at least* all three boxes on valuation filled in with blue to double check my decision to buy at any given time, and on stocks I know are overvalued, I want to make sure the future (growth) and financial health as well as quality to have 4 of the boxes blue. Also to your list of possibles, add MSFT and Google to the mix, but Disney, er, I donā€™t like the CEO. I donā€™t know if he has no vision, double vision, or what, but he reminds me of Steve Ballmer (old MSFT CEO) who was terrible. This might come back to bite me, but Iā€™m sticking. YMMV

I think that the undervaluation comes in when people dismiss what the company is doing now. Their Cell Manufacturing facility is one of the most advanced in the world, and with potential partnerships on the way (as the CEO hinted a few times) the current stock price can be considered undervalued. The disappointments of past investors doesn't mean that Pluristem has now future.

DWAC is possibly the biggest scam of a company I have ever seen. If you actually read the documents, the IPO buyers are going to essentially be diluted down to like 12% ownership of the company post merger (assuming the SEC even allows it to proceed since the sponsor prearranged the merger before the IPO and failed to disclose it in the prospectus). TMTG will end up owning like 45% and essentially contributing nothing (TMGT was newly formed and had no business or operations until recently and has failed to get any sort of working platform up and running). The remainder will be wined by the ā€œfounders,ā€ who, oh by the way, paid $25,000 for their ownership that will amount to like 8% post merger (IPO investors paid $300 million for their 12%). The rest will be owned by the PIPE investors who got the biggest sweetheart deal I have ever seen - they get preferred stock that is convertible at a 40% discount to market - which will massively dilute retail holders. Announcing Devin Nunes as CEO was just a ploy to divert attention from the investigation by the Feds.

Politics aside, I wouldn't want any of these names being mentioned in relationship to this company having anything to do with a company I actually liked. If Costco hired Nunez as CEO I'd be bankrupt. Amazon, Microsoft, even fucking GameStop and I'd be so fucking poor because of it. It might actually work for this type of business. Kind of like how Vince McMahon works for WWE. But man, I don't know. It could work out for them, but only because they exist in the upsidedown world.

New CEO is mentally deranged (or making himself look like it) and needs to shut his trap before he makes everything else worse on himself and Intel, same with optics. 12th gen Core CPUs weren't that much better than the 5000 series from AMD. There's a reason why I have been piping money over into AMD over Intel. They have a roadmap for what they want to do and is super eager to out compete themselves and the previous stuff. Plus you don't see Lisa Su or anyone else (besides that GPU dude I guess) spouting off stupid things like how they're going to try to win Apple back. AMD is actively competing against Intel on servers and desktop computers, while Intel is fumbling around like chickens with their heads cut off. AMD wants to win and they make it pretty obvious compared to Intel. My money is down on AMD for sure. Plus AMD has partnerships with Microsoft for the Xboxs and Sony for PlayStations, and even Samsung soon with Exynos. Keep in mind too AMD is in th Tesla's now, along with the super super hyped up Steam Deck. Don't see any of that with Intel at all.

If it was easy, they would've fixed it years ago. Or they are just incapable and that's worse. Which at this time, I'm leaning towards that. They should've solved these issues well before IPO. FYI: CEO interview in Barron's (17 November 2021) : Investors have yet to warm to Viatris, created a year ago this week by the merger between a Pfizer spinoff and the generic drugmaker Mylan, but its CEO says that the company is doing well and offers investors an extraordinarily broad range of products. "The thing thatĀ“s distinct from many companies out there is the portfolio," said Viatris (ticker: VTRS) CEO Michael Goettler, who previously ran the Pfizer (PFE) division known as Upjohn. That business, which specialized in selling off-patent drugs in overseas markets, completed its combination with Mylan in November 2020. Viatris has an extraordinarily broad portfolio, encompassing MylanĀ“s generics business, branded products from Upjohn like Xanax and Viagra, biosimilars, a number of over-the-counter products, and an active pharmaceutical ingredients business that sells chemicals used in drug manufacturing. "It makes for a much more robust business," Goettler told BarronĀ“s. "Any kinds of hits and headwinds weĀ“re getting in one region or from one particular product, we have ways to compensate for that." "No individual product is more than 10% of revenue," he said. "We found a business model thatĀ“s unique, itĀ“s a new kind of healthcare company." Goettler pointed to the companyā€™s performance over the past three quarters, in each of which its sales and earnings have beaten Wall Street estimates. "I think weĀ“re performing very well," he said. Investors arenĀ“t yet convinced. Viatris shares closed at $15.86 on Nov. 16 last year, the day of the launch of the combined company. The stock closed at $13.88 on Tuesday, down 12.5% over that period, while the S&P 500 was up 29.6%. Viatris shares are down 25.8% so far this year. Analysts are lukewarm on the stock: Eight of the 17 tracked by FactSet who cover Viatris rate it a Buy or Overweight, while nine rate it at Hold. Their average target price is $19.08, implying a 38.2% return on the stockĀ“s recent price of $13.80. In recent notes, analysts have flagged questions about how the earnings of the combined company will shake out over the long term. "Looking ahead, we continue to struggle with longer-term EBITDA visibility (or namely lack thereof)," wrote Piper Sandler analyst David Amsellem in a note out Nov. 8. "Put another way, we question the extent to which growing contribution from complex generics/biosimilars/legacy Mylan assets across a range of geographies over time can offset pressure on legacy Upjohn brands ...such that EBITDA can be sustainable." In other words, how the Viatris puzzle fits together is still hazy. Viatris is hoping to clear up the confusion at an investor day scheduled for Jan. 7. Management plans to lay out its financial forecasts for 2022, and set targets for 2023. "WeĀ“re going to talk about our pipeline; I think our pipeline is going to be one of the most underappreciated assets that we have, the organic (growth) opportunities that provides," Goettler said. That pipeline includes biosimilars, which are the equivalent of generics for more complex biologic drugs, but also includes complex generics, and new chemical entities. "We see a future where we move up the value chain, and go into things like 505(b)(2)Ā“s," Goettler said, referring to drugs given the go-ahead under a section of federal law that allow for the approval of new drugs based on studies run by other companies. In the short term, Goettler said that the company has been focusing on paying down debt and initiating a dividend. It has paid down $9 billion of debt in the first three quarters, Goettler said. Viatris announced dividends of 11 cents per share in the second and third quarters.

Activision is on the woke radar. Even if the CEO leaves, it's going to be going through a spin cycle for at least 6 months. They need to get a new title/update out by end of year and that will be the only thing to save the stock. Unless they decide to hire Elisabeth Homes (i heard she's available now for some reason!) there can be nothing that would shock this stock to move. I'd wait to mid summer before taking a closer look

Unfortunately gamers are extremely fickle so despite Sony, Nintendo of America & Microsoft all taking a stance against the recent allegations, I think the core gaming audience are going to make some noise, YouTubers are gonna ride the algo and make videos to "have these important conversations" and then forget about it as soon as the chip shortage is has faded. Hell they were shunned from the Game of Awards but still provided nominations and a representative on their voting panel or something lol. Good going Geoff. For reference, EA was voted worst gaming publisher and despite that their stock was at an all time high. Despite the amount of shitty 2k ports, people still buy the games. Again, gamers are emotionally incapable of boycotting games even if the publisher is knee-deep in sexual harassment allegations. To top it off, Activision is a bit of a pioneer of microtransactions which is where a lot of money seems to be made. I wouldn't be surprised if Call of Duty next year becomes free to play to compete with Halo but that's speculation. Ultimately... give it a year and you'll likely double whatever you put in. Hell maybe sooner if Bobby sees himself out the door and they replace him with another greedy CEO.

2021.11.17 17:47 woody9055 Entocort EC Unique dosing for Insurance

Hello everyone,
I've had a bit of a whirlwind with switching up some meds lately. I have proctosigmoiditis so my problems are at the very end of the line (this is important for later). I just switched up my ASA-5 medication of standard delayed release mesalamine 4.8 grams daily to Colazal. I am going to make a post at some point soon about mechanisms of action for the medications we take because I do not see enough people discussing these and I think that is arguably one of the most important parts of a treatment plan. At any rate, I am going to start budesonide today (Uceris or Entocort are the name brands). My insurance will not cover the 9mg ER tablets that are actually more fitting for my specific disease, so the doctor has asked insurance to cover the 3mg EC tablets where I will take 3 of them daily for that combined dosage of 9mg. Herein lies my problem: the mechanisms of action for delivery of the drug are entirely different for each version. From what I can tell they are both PH based release mechanisms. The 3mg will release in my ileum and ascending colon which is at the other end from where I need the medication to disperse. Has anyone had this sort of end around for insurance sake and it actually work? I am going to fill the script and take it because it will only be $15 and the EC tablets are not very systemically available so I don't see a real downside. Open for thoughts here.

2021.05.01 18:44 MemoryAccessRegister Failing budesonide

I was formally diagnosed with Crohn's within the last 6 months, but I've probably had it much longer than that (old PCP wrote it off as IBS for many years) based on my symptoms and computed tomography radiologic findings. My CT radiology report was a train wreck.
My GI physician is an IBD specialist at a research hospital. He believes that I have a mild-moderate disease activity and prescribed 9mg Budesonide (Entocort EC) daily for 3 months. Budesonide seemed to work for a few weeks but now all my flare symptoms are back and it doesn't seem to be doing anything. It's getting out of control again. I reported this to the office, but I've yet to hear back from them on next steps. I have read that some IBD patients just don't respond to corticosteroids, and I'm worried that I'm one of them.
For those of you who failed budesonide/Entocort, what's next? Prednisone? Immunosuppressive drugs? Biologics?

2018.04.27 17:05 iwannabefreddieHg [FINAL Update] Doctor was sure of Crohn's 2 years ago, found nothing and sent me to a rheumatologist who diagnosed RA, symptoms worsen and now they think Crohns again... What?

First Post
Second Post
So y'all things got weird than better. My doctor seemed to forget everything we talked about, never prescribed the medicine he was going to give me and when the MRI came back normal his nurse called and said "So, uhhhh, just tell me if you need anything else!" To which I responded. "Are you kidding me?! You found a bunch of Ulcers in my Terminal Ileum, inflammation markers, mucus and I am still shitting blood and in pain. What the hell do I do about that?!" I told his nurse also its not her fault and she is telling me what he told her too. Also it was nicer than it just sounded, I love nurses. So his nurse checked with him, and I get a notification from Publix that I had a prescription filled for me.... So I call the nurse who says, "The doctor prescribed stomach relaxers for your IBS." WHICH WE HAVE NEVER TALKED ABOUT?! Something was off. She also scheduled a Capsule Endoscopy for me to which I asked her to cancel and said I was finding a new doctor because this is ridiculous. Even I know stomach relaxers wont help a colon problem? I don't even have stomach pain, I have lower abdominal pain!
I then did something I don't like doing but it was getting ridiculous. I called a family friend in my home state who is a GI doctor for advice. (I had not talked to him because I don't like the idea that everyone bombards their doctor friend with questions).
His jaw hit the floor when he heard everything I told him. He said that at my age with all of my symptoms and bloodwork, finding the many ulcers in my terminal ileum should have been diagnostic of Crohn's and I needed treatment ASAP. He said to find a new doctor.
So I called a friend of a friend of a friend with Crohn's and asked who their doctor was. They have a woman they love and have seen for 15 years. So I called their office and the staff was so kind that they worked me in THAT DAY. So I go over with all of my pictures, my MRI disk, my Colonoscopy write up and images, my labs, everything.
She diagnosed it within 2 minutes of looking at it all. She was shocked I didn't have treatment. She was so kind and knowledgeable, and spent at least 45 minutes explaining every detail of Crohn's and why she was positive I had it. She started my on Pentasa, Entocort EC, Nexium, Cantasa, and 2 creams for the bleeding which she is positive is some sort of internal fissure.
She also said that she thinks I may have both RA and Crohn's like a few of you said because my Crohn's wasnt showing the first time around when I was diagnosed with RA so the Crohn's wasnt triggering the arthritis. I said that I think the other doctor was not good as I stated above so how do I even know he looked at the right charts and stuff of mine the first time. So I chose to treat the Crohn's only right now and see if the arthritis improves and she said that she was fine with that for now but we have to be careful (my Rheumatologist was fine with it too because she thinks its Crohn's alone after all of the developments).
She was so caring, and knowledgeable that she didnt make me repeat tests, and she wants to see me every 3-4 weeks at first to talk and make sure the medicine is helping. She is starting light in terms of medicine before she goes guns blazing with Biologics.
Then it got crazier when my insurance denied ALL OF MY CROHN's MEDICATION. So I called her office back to see what to do, she was in surgery but the second she found out insurance denied my medicine she rushed back to her office and brought samples of all of my medicine to give to me for free until she can buy time to talk to my insurance. I never asked her to do that, nor did I expect it. It almost made me cry to have a doctor that cared that much about her patient though :)
I love her. I am so happy to get answers after 2 years. The medicine she gave me to treat the symptoms have already started working, and the medicine for the underlying problem are hopefully going to help so I do not have to move to anything heavier.
TL;DR I am finally diagnosed with Crohn's after 2 years. The delay was because of a bad doctor, but my new one is amazing.

2016.02.21 05:22 zacnelson0628 Good news for people who are on Entocort/ Budesonide EC!

So, called the pharmacy this afternoon to check if my prescription was ready for pick-up yet. I get a 90 day supply, I wanted to verify the price on the phone so I would bring enough cash to pay for it. The prescription has been running me $160+ every 3 months. This time however, the pharmacy informed me that there is officially a generic version of this drug! I went from $160+ for 3 months to $20 every 3 months. I was amazed!

2013.12.13 16:48 juztagirlz Need guidance on what to do next...

Hi,
I'm a newb to these forums. I will keep the back story brief, as I'm facing a huge question right now.... and that's why I write.
I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 1993 (when I was 13), could never get off prednisone or immunosuppression and had to rely on narcotic infusions for 3 years. I spent a month in the hospital, with a morphine pump in 1996, before a surgeon was brought in to "cure" me.
He did the surgery - total colectomy with temporary ileostomy and j-pouch. Had nothing but problems from the first stage in the surgery. However, once it was done, I did have a couple of good years in there. The surgeon announced me "cured". I went back to him once at least once a year for my annual scope - often more like 4 times a year due to pain/incontinence/diarrhea/constipation.
Anyway, 2004, the pouchitis finally gets diagnosed. 2010 I've been on 5 years solid of flagyl, 4 years solid of cipro (had to end that one because of tendonitis), and 1 solid year of augmentin (to replace the cipro). I was told I had "antibiotic dependent pouchitis" by my surgeon. I had also had pyoderma gangrenosum several times on my calf - requiring immosuppressants to treat. Additionally, my immune system has always been very bad - getting pnuemonia at least once a year, bronchitis 3-4 times a year, hell, I even had whooping cough. Each time I'd end up on prednisone. I also had to have vitamin B12 infusions, iron infusions, and D supplements. No one could tell me why I just couldn't absorb those nutrients. I was also diagnosed with essential thrombocytosis because no one can explain why my platelet count never goes below 500k.
My surgeon was aware of all of this. Always blamed me whenever I was in pain. shrug
Anyway, in August, I got a sinus infection, bronchitis and double ear infection. After that, things went crazy in side my body and doctors had no idea what to do. I got bounced around from specialist to specialist, finally being told it was "in my head" and I had chronic fatigue syndrome related to epstein barr. What? I just kept trying to take care of myself. After 2 months, I was admitted to the hospital for uncontrollable diarrhea and migraines. I was told I might have crohn's. They tried to do a MRI, but I couldn't hold down food or water, so I couldn't keep down the prep. A pouchoscopy showed ulcers in my pouch and ileum. I was there 5 days, constantly told nothing was wrong and sent home. I called for the biopsy results a few days later and was told they were "suggestive of Crohn's".
I was unable to retain any food or water at this point, was in debilitating pain, suffering from migraines from physical exhaustion, losing weight... I still fought and tracked down a new set of doctors.
Eventually, I got a GI who could see me before January. He sent me to an allergist, we discovered I have some bad allergies and mold is one of them. I eliminated sugar and anything mold related from my diet (yeast, sugar, canned foods, etc), switched allergy pills, put in air filters, etc. This helped greatly with reducing my migraines and helping me keep water and food in. A month later, the allergist told me "oh, wow, yeah, look at these results, you did the right thing".
The GI and the allergist couldn't seem to agree which one needed to treat me. So the GI gave me a genetic test from prometheus ($800), which came back with positive antibody results for UC (but I have no colon) AND positive genetics for Crohn's. The GI puts me on flagyl, entocort EC (which he admits he doesn't know if will help as it is designed to be released topically in the colon... and I have no colon).
Both doctors tell me to come back in a month. I get better from switching to rice, potatoes, and water only as my foods, plus the changes I made to alleviate my allergies. I say "better" lightly - as yes, no more migraines and freedom from ear plugs and dark rooms; but, I can't seem to ingest more than 600 calories a day in bland food.
I come back a month later, still in severe pain, still unable to stand up more than 10 minutes without needing to rest, unable to eat and drink anything but rice, potatoes and water. The doctor doesn't know what to tell me... says he still doesn't know if it's crohn's. How can he treat me for Crohn's or whatever, if he isn't sure if it's crohn's? That was his argument. I finally just ask him what we need to do to find out. He tells me a MRI and a pouchoscopy and endoscopy. Since my FMLA leave is up at work, he also writes a note releasing me back to work.
The MRI never gets scheduled by his office. But I do come back a couple of days later for the scopes. Which he is thrilled with - fewer ulcers in my pouch, yay, and a good section of my lower small intestines look good, yay. I cry. Why am I in so much pain?
He looks at me, confused. Then says "A MRI would really be the best". So I ask when is it? I've been trying to get this MRI since I was IN THE HOSPITAL 2 months ago. It is now scheduled for Sunday (2 days from now).
I lost my job this week, because I tried to go back to work before anyone has treated me for crohn's. My body broke down at work, after only 2 hours, I had to go home and sleep. I had no more FMLA time. The delays on diagnosing me cost me my job.
SO, that's the story. Here's where I get really stuck. We won't have the scope biopsies and MRI results until Tuesday or Wednesday. I'm currently taking tramadol for pain (having been switched from percecet). The disease has progressed to a point that simply by drinking water, my entire abdomen will distend, I will feel burning within certain parts of my stomach for 30 minutes, and I will fight throwing up the entire time. Food.... sh*t, that's hours of hell. My question is... how does this happen? Why have I not been issued the official crohn's diagnosis and given treatment yet? Is this normal? I fear I'm going to lose even MORE of my internal organs to misdiagnosis and I'm very afraid.
Does anyone else have an experience like this? What can I do? Anything?

2013.08.27 23:02 cbarthistory Questions about Entocort and Budesonide EC

Hey everyone, I have a question for anyone who has been on or is on Entocort EC or the generic Budesonide EC. I have had Crohn's for 8 years now and I have been taking Entocort for 6 years off and on and my doctor recently (three weeks ago) prescribed the generic, Budesonide, for me instead. I didn't really think anything about it then, but the past two weeks my nausea (from Methotrexate injections and Crohn's) has gotten MUCH worse. I am nauseated when I wake up and have been having more diarrhea this month than I have experienced all summer. I have tried to keep my usual diet, but over the weekend I tried going BRAT only and it helped none. I have woken up the past three days with intense heartburn as well which is unusual since I am on Dexilant. I was just wondering if anyone had a similar experience when on Budesonide? I already messaged my doctor with this question but I wanted to know if anyone of you guys had a similar experience.
