Brown Patches on basil

2024.05.18 22:58 TheNinthDragon Brown Patches on basil

Brown Patches on basil
Hello I've been growing my basil indoors, using a sansi 100 watt LED full spectrum bulb (~13 hday). Yesterday I noticed one on one of the bottom leaves there was a silvery/shiny patch and the next day that patch was dry and brown color. This morning I noticed it's sibling leaf had a similar marking and when I got home from errands it also joined the fun.
My watering schedule is inconsistent. But I try to let the dirt dry up before watering (probably once every 5-7 days?)
The two leaves in question are the two large ones on the bottom.
Any idea what is going on? Am I over watering, sunburning, or something with nutrients? Should I remove the leaves?
Bonus points, I included 1 picture of the top set of leaves where the tips have been getting some yellow splotching, not sure if this is related and I'm not too worried about it yet, but if I can make things better for the plant I want to and would appreciate any diagnosis/advice.
Thank you all.
(Since the post didn't get my lighting statements from before, I use a 100W sansi bulb, about 3 ft away as they were initially getting burned so I got them to some shade where the new growth seems to be looking great. The bulb is on for about 13 hours and sometimes the simun shines through the window, but usually for no more than an hour)

2024.05.18 19:45 Axo_orthodox What do you think about how religion is represented and shown in vinland saga?

As someone who is religious (working on becoming Eastern orthodox ), I found a deep abiding love for Makoto's work, as well as the implicit "religious/philosophical" themes related to forgiveness, war, and peace. While Thors' dream is not explicitly put in religious categories, I found his belief that a "true warrior = has no enemies, as there is no one you have to hurt" to be in accord with the faith-community I am part of šŸ˜.
Likewise I have tremendous respect for how Makoto dealt with the issue of "violence" in Thorfinn's post-Askelad Arc (particularly the vision in "Hell/Valhala" when he is knocked out). Thorfinn did not do years of violence, only to turn a new leaf and not suffer any consequence, and he is constantly seeking to truly renew his inner life towards his ideal (Vinland). It reminds me of St. Basil's canon, and how violence (be it in a just or especially an unjust cause) has spiritual consequences on the individual. I saw this in how Thorfinn seeks to be reconciled to Hild (in the later arcs) as well as not fall back towards vengeance when the opportunity present itself (Baltic War Arc).
"All violence, local, individual, or nationally-sanctioned, is here stated to be an expression of hubris that is inconsistent with the values of the Kingdom of God, and while in many circumstances that violence may be necessary or unavoidable (Basil states the only legitimate reasons as the defense of the weak and innocent), it is never justifiable. Even for the best motives in the world, the shedding of blood remains a defilement, such that the true Christian, afterwards, would wish to undergo the cathartic experience of temporary return to the lifestyle of penance, that is be penitent. Basils restriction of the time of penance to three years, seemingly harsh to us moderns, was actually a commonly recognized sign of merciful leniency in the ancient rule book of the early Church."
https://incommunion.org/2006/02/19/st-basil-on-war-and-repentance/
I would also add that I really did love Canute's wrestling with theodicy, and the general problem of evil vis a vis the goodness of God. While I am religious, I think Canute's framing makes sense within the general story, and echoes that of Ivan Karamazov in "The Brothers Karamazov" (Book V, Chapter IV. Rebellion). Ultimately I think Canute still desires the dream of Thorfinn (even if he thinks he cannot manifest it about), but the tension is well down and demonstrates the complexity of the idealist turned cynic (who yet still desires for the other idealist to be correct).
"I renounce the higher harmony altogether. It's not worth the tears of that one tortured child who beat itself on the breast with its little fist and prayed in its stinking outhouse, with its unexpiated tears to ā€˜dear, kind Godā€™! It's not worth it, because those tears are unatoned for. They must be atoned for, or there can be no harmony. But how? How are you going to atone for them? Is it possible? By their being avenged? But what do I care for avenging them? What do I care for a hell for oppressors? What good can hell do, since those children have already been tortured? And what becomes of harmony, if there is hell? I want to forgive. I want to embrace. I don't want more suffering. And if the sufferings of children go to swell the sum of sufferings which was necessary to pay for truth, then I protest that the truth is not worth such a price. I don't want the mother to embrace the oppressor who threw her son to the dogs! She dare not forgive him!
Let her forgive him for herself, if she will, let her forgive the torturer for the immeasurable suffering of her mother's heart. But the sufferings of her tortured child she has no right to forgive; she dare not forgive the torturer, even if the child were to forgive him! And if that is so, if they dare not forgive, what becomes of harmony? Is there in the whole world a being who would have the right to forgive and could forgive? I don't want harmony. From love for humanity I don't want it. I would rather be left with the unavenged suffering. I would rather remain with my unavenged suffering and unsatisfied indignation, even if I were wrong. Besides, too high a price is asked for harmony; it's beyond our means to pay so much to enter on it. And so I hasten to give back my entrance ticket, and if I am an honest man I am bound to give it back as soon as possible. And that I am doing. It's not God that I don't accept, Alyosha, only I most respectfully return Him the ticket.ā€
ā€œThat's rebellion,ā€ murmured Alyosha, looking down.
ā€œRebellion? I am sorry you call it that,ā€ said Ivan earnestly. ā€œOne can hardly live in rebellion, and I want to live. Tell me yourself, I challenge youā€”answer. Imagine that you are creating a fabric of human destiny with the object of making men happy in the end, giving them peace and rest at last, but that it was essential and inevitable to torture to death only one tiny creatureā€”that baby beating its breast with its fist, for instanceā€”and to found that edifice on its unavenged tears, would you consent to be the architect on those conditions? Tell me, and tell the truth.ā€
ā€œNo, I wouldn't consent,ā€ said Alyosha softly."
Long story short, I love Makoto's work and have found it transformational. I also like how the overall theme of repentance for one's past is done. Specifically Thorfinn's in the context of the animeand manga and how he would if been seen by others knowing his past sins as being unredeemable due to being a viking warrior and murderer. So I'm conclusion I think it's an amazing anime and manga. God bless ā˜¦ļøā¤ļø.

2024.05.17 23:26 The_Rambling_Otter Remember the mini-game in New Leaf where you work for Brewster part-time? What if the next game gives us more options for that? Like working part-time at the Museum, the Tailors, or the Hospital, School, Restaurant, Cafe, Convenience Store. (Among other examples)

While not in Happy Home Paradise itself, its predecessor, Happy Home Designer had a Convenience Store you could build. I always designed mine after Snack Falcon from Night in the Woods and had Chief (wearing a pleather jacket) as the employee.
But regardless, I would love to have more little job mini-games like this.

2024.05.17 22:33 twilight_songs Why is my basil yellowing?

Why is my basil yellowing?
I don't know why this is happening --yellow at the veins, and it continues into new growth.
So far, it's rained intermittently so I haven't had to water, but I check every day. The container is burlap, so it drains.
It normally gets lots of light-full sun for much of the day, but it's been overcast a fair amount lately.
This is our third year growing basil like this, but the first time the yellowing has started so soon and been more than a leaf here and there.
All advice appreciated!

Title, basically. Leaf miners are going through my garden, first the basil and now my tomatoes. Anything I can do to salvage this, and anything preventative I can do next year to ensure it doesnā€™t happen again if this year is a bust?

2024.05.16 18:42 Mvf362 Best way to fill raised beds? - New gardener

I have gardened before but never had to fill my own beds or take care of the soil because it was in a community garden. I built my own beds this spring and am about to fill them.
My plan is to dig up the ground underneath and get the weeds out, then put a layer of leaf and pine litter down. Iā€™m going to put about 4 inches of topsoil down after that. Iā€™m only doing 4 inches on top because I fully expect everything to just grow into the ground underneath. Iā€™m not putting down any netting or tarp. I donā€™t know much about fertilizer. From reading I think Iā€™m going to add banana peels and eggshells to the topsoil and dump in some earth worms. I want everything to be all natural, and I donā€™t really want to use any manure products.
Is this a good plan? Any tips or advice?
WHAT IM GROWING FOR CONTEXT In the vegetable bed I am planting cucumbers, tomatoes, peas, beans, bell, chili, and banana peppers, summer squash, and pumpkins. In the flower bed I am planting zinnias, cosmos, marigolds, straw flowers, bachelor buttons, sweet peas, and snap dragons. Yes, these are both large beds and Iā€™ve accurately spaced everything. In the smaller herb bed Iā€™m planting lavender, dill, thyme, basil, oregano, and cilantro. In the butterfly/wildflower bed I have lupine, delphinium, daisies, canterbury bells, milkweed, and blue bonnets. The soil here is dry and dense, it soaks up water. Iā€™m in the northeast US so itā€™s a bit rocky/piney from the forests but I am in farming country so I assume itā€™s decent for growing.
Looking for soil advice but honestly any tips on any of the garden is helpful.

Coronation chicken of the woods
Coronation chicken of the woods
I made some coronation chicken earlier this week, so I recreated it forage style!
SautƩed diced onions in curry powder with bay leaf. Cooked pasta and rinsed to cool. Assembled with: chicken of the woods, sultanas, dried apricot, mango chutney (Indian), flaked/chopped almonds, mayonnaise, creme fraiche/greek yoghurt, dash of cream (traditionally whipped but I leave as is when with pasta), white pepper, salt, a bit more curry powder (heat to preference), squeeze of lemon, and herbs (I used wild garlic and chive, basil, parsley). I topped with some sautƩed common hogweed shoots and buds.
All very adjustable to taste depending on how sweet or spicy you like it! I also used a bit of ground coriander and fermented garlic honey here.

2024.05.15 15:25 Maximum_Specialist89 My basil is sick. Need advice.

So my basil was given by a colleague. It was transported in a watered pot. It looked very healthy. However for 3 days it stayed in the pot only with water. Yesterday, I got garden soil and planted it on 4 pots, and the other 2 rooted stems transferred in my plant box(I also trimmed the flowering stems so new leaf stems would grow. 2 of them started to look better today, but the rest were turning brown. Its getting good sunlight and I sprayed some on the leaf and stems in hopes for it to look better.
How can I revive the basils to bring it back in its best form? It hurts my heart seeing them weakšŸ˜”
