2024.05.22 04:26 Funny-Conclusion-290 Dealing with disbelieving doctors

So I have Crohn’s disease, and have been diagnosed since I was 7. For nearly my entire life I have had issues with nutrition, part of which can be attributed to the Crohn’s mostly during flares, but my diet has been extremely limited my entire life due to sensory sensitivities and self restricting. I am basically certain that I have ARFID, I believe I was diagnosed with “general disordered eating” (some bs) around the same age as my Crohn’s diagnosis, when I went to food therapy (which was somewhat traumatizing bc they made me try foods that were not my safe foods. So much gagging and crying.) Used protein shakes for much of my childhood and was consistently malnourished but it’s gotten better only in the past 2 years. I’m also neurodivergent but it’s another thing that doctors have worked their way around fully diagnosing that could contribute, if diagnosed, to the believability of having ARFID.
Wondering as an adult (19) how I should go about seeking a diagnosis or if anyone has any tips for common things doctors will say to try and discredit your experience. I mentioned Crohn’s because I’m worried they will use this as a reason why I was malnourished, when my GI could probably tell them it was only sometimes the cause. Especially worried because I’m not currently significantly malnourished, and my diet has expanded (though it’s not anywhere near that of someone with an unrestricted diet lol. Biggest change is I’ll eat meat (never did until age 18) but only in burger form.) and I’m worried that they won’t believe me if I say that I’ve gotten better. Thanks in advance!

2024.05.22 04:15 Kollateral2 College Scholarships

I'm blessed enough to have been offered more than I need in scholarships from my college. However, I'm wondering if I'm contributing too much to a welfare state or taking more than I should by accepting them? They're offering to give me back thousands in cash even after covering tuition, a meal plan with their cafeteria, parking, and other fees. I know I shouldn't pocket this and buy stupid stuff like PlayStations. However, my parent would be upset with me if I tried to decline any of these scholarships. So, if I could just put them away and put them toward something good and what a government should provide funds for (supporting the homeless, pregnancy centers, etc.) in the future, that would be ideal. Is this permissible, or should I decline what I can?

2024.05.22 04:13 No_Reason5341 Full body aches that Tylenol can't touch. What's going on?

30M, 5'7" 170lbs. Former smoker 1/2 to 3/4 pack per day for 10 years. Quit 3 years ago.
Diagnoses: GI GERD/LPR, Celiac, Crohn's (likely but not confirmed), IBS, Hiatal Hernia, Mental health (Anxiety, OCD, depression), Pulmonology light asthma/reactive airway disease, Other high cholesterol
Medications: Lamictal, Librium, Famotidine, Esomerpazole, Promethazine (as needed for nausea), Hydroxyzine (as needed for sleep), Lorazepam (as needed for panic and anxiety)
I have been getting body aches like you get when you are sick for a little while now. It probably started in the last 6 months or so. It has gotten worse recently. It impacts my shoulders, arms, legs, feet etc.
A month ago, my doctor ordered some bloodwork that seems to suggest he was looking for something like Fibromyalgia or Lupus. Tests done were CBC w/ differential, Sedimentation Rate, Automated, C-Reactive Protein, TSH W/ Reflex to Free T4, Vitamin D Hydroxy, Comprehensive Metabolic Panel, and Lipid Panel.
The Lipid Panel is the only thing that came back bad- it turns out I have very high cholesterol. It says, regarding another test, "inflammation tests are all normal range", but this was a few weeks ago and since Tylenol is not touching my aches I feel like inflammation could be a problem in some way.
Lipid Panel Results were Total Cholesterol=263, Triglycerides=239, Cholesterol/HDL Ratio=7.9, HDL Cholesterol=33, Non-HDL=230, LCD, Cholesterol, Calc=192, VLDL Cholesterol=38.
Any idea what is causing this? I can't take NSAIDs so I am wondering if there is something I can take (that's not Tylenol) to help my aches so I can sleep tonight.

2024.05.22 04:09 Outside_Jaguar3827 AAPI Month Bridgerton Special: Bangladesh 🇧🇩

I hope everyone is enjoying Part 1 of Season 3 😄 ! I caught up analyzing scenes that I almost forgot to release another AAPI Month post. I will admit that this region is underrated and I hope more learn about this country. Let me know what you think:
HISTORY🧭: Although it didn't become an independent country until 1971, the British Empire has been in the area for awhile. The East India Company established a base in Calcutta (Koltkata in the modern day) around 1757. Afterwards, a permanent settlement was created called the Bengal Presidency, where employees and "zamindars" (local landlords) occupied the place. https://www.britannica.com/place/Bangladesh/The-British-period-c-1700-1947
CUISINE🍛: Much of Bangladeshi cuisine is influenced by the Mughal Empire and it's geography. This country is the 4th largest producer of rice 🍚 and fish 🐟 is a staple in their diet. There's even a Bengali idiom associated with this fact; "fish and rice makes a Bengali". Popular dishes include: hilsha (a spicy fish curry), pithas (small pancakes made with rice flour), biryani (spiced rice with lamb, chicken, or goat meat), and rasgulla (a syrupy cheese ball). I can see Mr. Finch trying the last dish since he's a Cheese Connoisseur 🧀. https://uncorneredmarket.com/bangladeshi-food/
BENGALI RENAISSANCE📜: Around this time, the Bengali Renaissance was at its peak. Led by reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Hindu culture and society have flourished. The Asiatic Society, an institution for "Oriental Research", was founded in 1784 by Sir William Jones and stationed in Calcutta. Two important books 📚 were created in 1801: "Bengali Grammar" (a textbook ) and "Dialogues" ( a book about the working class, like fishermen, day labourers, merchants, and women). They even established a college for intellectual learning and oriental studies in 1800 called Fort William College. Since Calcutta was an epicenter of learning, I can see Eloise visiting this area. https://en.banglapedia.org/index.php/Bengal_Renaissance
WATER💧: Water is an essential part of Bangladeshi life. In fact, two-thirds of the country is made of wetlands. This is a blessing and a curse for the residents. On the one hand, the country is extremely fertile, allowing farmers to have high yields and develop agricultural technology (Ex. dhap or floating gardens). On the other hand, Bangladesh is more suspectable to monsoons (which is considered a season), water pollution, and waterborne diseases 🦠. In fact, Oladevi (goddess of cholera) is important in Bengali folk tradition due to the high prevalence of water-related illnesses. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20200910-the-remarkable-floating-gardens-of-bangladesh https://en.banglapedia.org/index.php/Oladevi
DURGA PUJA🐯: One of the most important holidays in Bangladesh, along with West Bengal, is Durga Puja. It's ancient religious holiday 🕉️ that celebrates the Goddess Durga slaying the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Introduced in the 16th century during the reign of Emperor Akbar, hundreds of thousands of devotees head to temples like the Dhakeshwari Temple every October. Beautiful deity effigies (usually made of clay), Bhog (blessed food), Kabigan (Bengali folk music), Jatra (folk drama in theater), and creative competitions are organized/made for the occasion. https://beautifulbangladesh.gov.bd/event/80

  1. What can I use for aches outside of NSAIDs (GI issues) and Tylenol (ineffective)? How dangerous would it be to use with my hiatal hernia and GI issues? I have read that Turmeric can be helpful. Also cold plunges (which I don't have access to). Outside of that, I haven't seen too much.
  2. In your estimation, why were those specific tests ordered? I can't access my doctor for a few months in order to ask.

2024.05.22 04:06 Starwarsfan055 Questions ,please help if you can

Hi everyone! So I want to start off saying right now I’m at the end of my junior year of high school, I don’t really know what I want to do in life right now so I’m planning of going to community college for 2 year and staying home to plan things out ,if everything works out with transfer of credits and when I select my major etc my dream school would be umami currently , throughout my life I usually go on vacation to Florida every other year so I’m super familiar with the area and I grew up loving Florida it’s my favorite place on earth that I’ve been to so the location is perfect for me and close to some of the spots I used to travel to ,when I graduate I’ll have taken 3 AP history classes which again I’m not sure if I want to go into history but they are still AP classes, I’ve done some volunteering and I’ve gotten a couple academic awards/recondizations nothing huge but still something, currently I’ve taken no SAT or ACT but I’ve heard it’s a must for the school and I’ve heard the transfer rate for acceptance goes compared to the freshman acceptance rates, again I have no idea if I could even go here it’s just a dream but with some plans I might be able to get get the cost down , try to go for a academic scholarship, try to get in the financial aid program and join the marine reserve to help pay, but if anyone could take the time and tell me some things that are a must in order to go here so I can start doing stuff now in order to qualify and have a chance thanks so much

2024.05.22 03:50 Frequent_Resource_78 My friend is between Rutgers-Camden School of Nursing and TCNJ for nursing

Like the title says, my friend is currently debating between both schools. She got accepted to Rutgers' Honors College, yet she’s still hesitant about committing there. She got accepted into TCNJ's nursing program, but she’d have to pay out of pocket. But it’s closer and much smaller which she likes. Rutgers, however, will pay for her tuition with an additional $1.5k scholarship, but it's far away. Basically, what I'm asking is: What would you recommend? Is the Honors College worth it? What are the pros and cons? Thanks

2024.05.22 03:48 Desperate_Stretch602 Help with pathology report

I had an endoscopy and colon done and I got the pathology results but need a bit of help understanding it.
A. Duodenum, Biopsy: - Small bowel mucosa with increased intraepithelial lymphocytes, and Brunner's glands, villous architecture and crypt architecture within normal limits, see comment 1. - Antral-type gastric mucosa within normal limits, see comment 2. - NEGATIVE for acute duodenitis. - NEGATIVE for dysplasia.
Comment 1: Increased intraepithelial lymphocytes is a nonspecific finding that may be seen in a number of conditions, including infections (e.g. Helicobacter gastritis), obesity, and autoimmune disorders (e.g. Crohn's disease). It is seen in celiac disease; correlation with serology is suggested, if not done.
Comment 2: This likely represents extraneous tissue. At microscopy, the cuts all show five tissue fragments; thus, this cannot be explained by a floater.
B. Stomach, Biopsy: - Body and antral type gastric mucosa within normal limits. - NEGATIVE for Helicobacter-like organisms.
C. Transverse Colon, Biopsy: - Colonic mucosa within normal limits.
D. Sigmoid Colon, Biopsy: - Colonic mucosa with few superficial lightly pigmented histiocytes, otherwise within normal limits. - NEGATIVE for significant inflammation and NEGATIVE for dysplasia.

2024.05.22 03:43 Altruistic_Raisin918 Need Help with Financial Aid: High EFC but Still Struggling

Hi everyone,
I need some advice on my financial aid situation. My FAFSA EFC is too high allegedly, so I don’t qualify for the Federal Pell Grant or Subsidized Loan. However, I have a sibling in college and it is still too much for my parents. I go to Wayne State University so aid specific to that would be helpful!
Does anyone have tips on how to get more aid? Here’s what I’m considering:
  1. Appealing the Decision: Has anyone appealed their aid package successfully?
  2. Finding Scholarships: Any good resources for scholarships that aren’t super competitive?
  3. State and College Aid: How do I find state grants or school-specific aid?
  4. Private Loans: Any advice on finding private loans with good terms?
  5. Working Part-Time: How do you balance work and school?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

2024.05.22 03:36 Old_Fishing_4443 Chance me for t20s and other possible suggestions

Demographics: Male, Asian in Socal, in a pretty compettive school most kids got 3.5-3.7 uw gpa, first gen and low income to the standards of my reigion
Intended Major(s):Civil engineering or something environmental science related
ACT/SAT/SAT II: 1550 on the SAT
UW/W GPA and Rank: Unweighted is a 3.63 and Weighted is a 4.12, with my class rank being 73/523
Coursework: AP/IB/Dual Enrollment classes, AP/IB scores, etc: Planning to takea total of 13 APs by senior year, and two dual enrollments this summer
Awards: Have very little, mainly principle honor roll with distinction, and AP scholars with dinstinction
Extracurriculars: Include leadership & summer activities:
-UCI research internship where I studied the effects of increased amounts of pollution on the environment as well as people who may suffer or be more suscetiple to this increase, like pregnant women. Created helpful ways to find sources of said pollutionn and help keep it from spreading
-Lab research internship: Analyzed soil and water samples to test certain conditions of areas that are possibly contaminated with harsh chemicals, as well suggesting policies that will help fix the exposed weaknesses of a certain area.
-Designed a UAV drone for Nasa to help mitigate and help rescuers during natural diseaters. Intended to also help teach children around the nation about the importance of UAV drones in the world
-Designed a pyrolysis generator, testing different methods of fuel and heat to help fight the excess plastic problem by turning the plastic into bio fuels. (Hopefull might work on a research paper on the most effective ways of heating for pyrolysis)
-Created a few apps to help people like my sister who suffers from a mental disabbility to help her learn more about the world. One example being a bird app that gives her mroe information on birds by simply typing in their favorite color and with one button can learn all types of information on birds matching that color
-Created mini wind turbines using scraps from around my house, with the most prominent one being one that can be attached to your bike to also promote exercise. (Mainly inspired by my dad who suffers from permanent lung damage from Covid a while back, and needed to start exercising to improve his lungs but also being suspectible to environmental pollution)
-Volunteered to write life stories at mutiple nursing homes for patients who suffered from alzheimers, to allow them to share what they remembered of their story to later be shared to their future relatives or families. (Inspired by my grandfather who suffered from the same disease)
-Did rowing and singing for 4 years, mainly did these as hobbies but have used them to do small skirmishes or volunteer at church choirs
-Did more volunteer working with groups at my school as well like Red Cross, NHS, and Orphans Club
Schools: I plan on RDing for this whole list: UCLA, UCI, UCSD, UCB, Princeton, Cornell, Stanford, USC, Yale, Upenn, and NYU. (Would be open to more suggestions, I'm not to familiar with most colleges.)
Additonal Info: My grades dropped, a C in foreign language, during my first semester of sophmore year, due to family complications, which is why it's a 3.63 right now. But from then on I have been grinding to get my grades back up, and have shown a great upward trend from my grades with straight As in my final semester of junior year. I don't know if my GPA will be the downfall of this whole application or not, as well as my awards list being so small. Thank you.

2024.05.22 02:29 floofyfloof2 My son just graduated and I can't stop crying

I feel so stupid. I knew this was coming but I guess I didn't know just how hard it was going to hit me. My son just graduated last night and honestly, I tried not to think about it much before it happened. I was okay last night and today, today has been a different story. I took the day off of work today and it's a good thing I did because it's been rough.
I've been his only parent since he was a baby. His dad took off and left when he was one and has not been a part of his life at all. I've been it although my parents have been a huge influence in my son's life and I am so grateful for that.
I'm so depressed that I don't even know what to do and he hasn't even left yet. Yes, we have the summer but each day is going to be me thinking that this is it and this is the last time we will do this or that together. I know that I'm being dramatic but I feel like losing him. Everything is going to be so different. I don't know how to cope. I don't have anyone to lean on. I don't have a partner there beside me to cry to. Where did the time go? I spent all this time trying to raise him and being up to my eyeballs in mama duties and trying to work and make ends meet for the two of us that I feel like I missed out on his whole life.
I took our time for granted and I hate myself for it. I spent my time trying to figure out how I was going to pay a doctor's bill instead of listening to him tell me a story about dinosaurs. And now, I don't have that time anymore. I came home from work and spent my evenings exhausted in front of the TV instead of reading him that annoying book for a second or third time. That time is gone and it can't be replaced.
He graduated with Honors and is going to college on a full scholarship. I couldn't be more proud of him. I want him to know how proud I am of him. I want him to know that he has turned into a wonderful, young man.
I'm just so very, very sad. It's like I'm grieving a loss and it's a loss I don't know how to handle.

2024.05.22 02:15 Impossible-Ad3 Chance a worried HS sophomore hoping to get into Stanford or other t10 unis

Hi, I am a sophomore in high school and am wondering if I am on track to get into a t10 university for premed (bio, neuro, or biochem). I am worried because of my relatively low UW gpa and because most asian males who get admitted to t10 unis usually have 4.0s while I will have a 3.89 when applying. This is not a shitpost 😭
Demographics: Asian male, no hooks
Household income: 400k+, going to pay full tuition
UW/W gpa: 3.89/5.45 top 10% of graduating class (expected when applying to college)
ECs:
  1. Started nonprofit that increases access to research opportunities for hs students in my city: Matched 25 hs students to undergrads to learn about research skills and develop a research poster in their area of interest, held workshops, developed an app to facilitate collaboration between hs students, fundraising a couple thousand dollars as scholarship money for a cumulative symposium where these hs students can showcase their work.
  2. Student researcher at a surgical oncology lab at a top 5 med school (going to have done it for 4 years: Researched surgical techniques and will get co-authored on paper(s) along side surgical oncologists.
  3. Play Tabla (indian percussion instrument) (going to have done it for 4 years): Took classes since I was in 1st grade, taught a group of 5 students the basics, played at different temples.

Am I on track to get into a t10 university? Stanford, Duke, or UPenn is the dream but I would love UC Berkeley or UCLA.
I am mainly concerned regarding my UW gpa and my awards so far. I was also wondering if a 1550+ SAT score will help make up for my relatively low UW gpa. I would greatly appreciate any advice on what I should focus on and try accomplishing in the summer. Thank you so much in advance for the advice!
