While the Shelton-McMurphey-Johnson House is arguably the most recognizable historical building in Eugene, it’s not the only one. Many of Eugene’s recognizable landmarks have long, interesting histories of their own.
The Hayse Blacksmith Shop was constructed in 1913-1914 by Charles Stratton and his son Edwin Stratton for use by Ernest Hayse as a blacksmith shop.
It is thought to have been the home of an auto garage for a short time when automobiles were becoming more commonplace in the Eugene area.
In 1925, Henry Brogden opened Brogden Feed and Seed in the building. He served local residents and farmers from the surrounding area for almost 40 years until closing in 1963.
The building was painted white in its early years, but by 1925, during the building's first addition, it was repainted gray. The rounded roof style was chosen by the original builders to reflect the appearance of barns in the Stratton’s hometown of Kalamazoo, Michigan. In the 1920s, peaks were added to the exterior of the round roof to create the visually pleasing bell shape on the eaves of the roofline. The building was painted red in the 1940s, when a second addition enlarged the east end of the barn. An interesting detail is a sign advertising Crown Feeds and the Brogdon Store, painted on the siding near the southwest corner of the building. This signage dates back to the early days when it was a feed and seed store but has been restored during the repainting of the barn.
During the two early additions in the 1920s and 1940s, the builders reused most of the shiplap siding that needed to be removed. Windows from the original structure were also saved and reused on the exterior walls of the new additions.
The Red Barn Natural Grocery has been in this historic building since 1989.

Ok so normally I pass on these jobs, this is a cedar SIDING home(I have done a patio that was Cedar SHAKE but didn't need any chemicals) but a client I did today wants me to do there parents house and he is a good connect to have as this will also land me another couple of jobs. Hi all! I'm selling my '93 Masaki Sakurai Standard in excellent condition for its age. There are minor scratches on the top but structural integrity is not affected. This is an excellent concert guitar by all means, despite it being advertised as the lowest model in the Sakurai lineup in the 90's. It is now equivalent to the Concert-J, which would easily surpass $5k USD. Playability is excellent as Sakurai-san shapes the fingerboard to allow players to fret barre chords in the first position, and the action is currently set at standard 4mm for 6th string, and 3mm for 1st string, with plenty more saddle to adjust to your preference. The guitar can project well and can fill a room easily. The tone is sweet and warm, with good separation of notes and it truly sounds piano-like. Offers are negotiable.

Testing was successful, my 400 Gallon tub heated from ~ 0 - 40 Celsius in 3 hrs. The Heat siphon works great and generates only about 5 psi before moving water through the jets. It makes lots of *interesting* noises when in operation which is unsettling when you aren't sure if it will explode but ultimately measurements showed its a pretty low pressure system once I mitigated back pressure as much as possible. For reference blowing into the tube as hard as I could generated ~ 15 psi. The hot water circulates in big spurts because of how the copper is wrapped around the barrel. Everyone sitting in the tub periodically gets a jet of hot water to their back causing everyone to jump in unison but its not nearly hot enough to cause a burn. Its pretty charming.
Now it is time to commit to new parts in an arrangement that is much more organized. Diverter on the back end inside the hot tub cabinet was added as pictured with quick connect hose couplings. These 3/4 ball valves leave open the option for upgrades planned for later. The diverter used to be hanging off the front of the heater so its much cleaner now.
The prototype was made with spare parts so there was a lot of cast iron fittings mixed with brass. The iron obviously rusted pretty bad in the chlorinated water. Now the 'hot end' of the heater has been replaced with *almost* all brass parts. I will get to those pesky 1/2" Galvanized Tee's at the bottom eventually but I'll have to re-sweat on the copper pipes to their threaded fittings.
The "Lake filter" prototype is complete and consists of a milk crate with a marble cutting board sealed with silicone caulking at the bottom. Aluminum mesh covers the milk crate. A 1 1/4" foot valve will fit inside and has ~3mm holes to do the work of coarse filtering. An inline fine sand filter is on the end of the 10' hose and attached to a 1" gas powered trash pump. The tub must be parked less than 50' from water's edge unless I buy a longer 1" fire hose. The pump's rated flow rate means the tub should fill from any river or lake in ~ 15 minutes. Water can then be circulated via heat syphon alone. Two car batteries with a 1/2 HP electric pump is available to push circulation to improve efficiency during active heating. In testing this lasted 4+ hrs but these are old car batteries.
The hot tub cabinet is slowly coming along. I did some amateur hour framing with 2x2 spindles and have the sides covered with plywood. The front and back will be simple enough but the cabinet will end up being a pentagon. From above it will be a pentagon. The front will have angled sides for aerodynamics when pulling it on the highway. I have finally designed the angled sides to maximize cabinet space and avoid interfering with the front jack stands. Now all that is left is to build some shelving and cabinets, find ~100 sqft of cedar planks to finish the hot tub surround and decide on what covering to put on the front & back decks. Maybe more cedar? I'd be open to suggestions!
The new parts and upgrade have been really exciting for me. Feels like that first iron man movie where he made the first suit out of spare parts. Now that I brought the hot tub home, I'm putting it together properly. This is my Mark One!

My friend's daughter got married yesterday and he handed these out during the reception. Being a BOTL himself, I expected him to hand out boutiques. When he showed me the box, I chided him a bit and said, "What? Regular ol' RyJs?" He gave me a asshole chuckle and said, "Yeah, but at least these are the 25th Anniversary ones. They're pretty good."
At the wedding, he and I smoked sticks out of our personal boxes, but he gave me one of the wedding cigars, and I sparked it up when I got home. I'm just starting the 2nd third and this cigar is delicious! On the mild side of medium, it's a very enjoyable anytime smoke. Not complex at all, but it has a solid flavor profile that's slightly spicy with earthy undertones. A little graham cracker and cedar round it out. And while it's perfect for handing out at a wedding, I could see spending a nice afternoon smoking one in my backyard with a mojito or caipirihna. Definitely different from the run-of-the-mill RyJs!

We have an existing gas insert fireplace. We tore down the stone facade and are down to just plywood and the fireplace.
I’d like to do shiplap on the wall, but realize I need to keep a 6-7” buffer around the fireplace.
My questions: 1. It appears I need 6” from the sides and 7” from the top for this model. Is the plywood already in violation of that? 2. If I do the shiplap I’ll need to stop it 6” short of the fireplace. What are options for bridging the distance between the ship lap and the fireplace? A metal surround seems like it’d work, but that’ll require some clever shimming and pulling the fireplace out the thickness of the shiplap.
This feels like a small project that just got very very big.
