2024.05.21 12:17 Neat_Road582 Annual leave tax advice

I was hoping to get some advice. I’m stepping down from a store manager role to a permanent part time role once a week while I complete my social work placement. I’ll have 88 hours of annual leave when I’m planning to step down. I’ll be taking a pay cut of $12.25 an hour so I’m wondering am I best to take my annual leave prior to stepping down and be taxed on it in full or just take it during my placement once a week for the duration of my first placement to have more of an income while not having to work. I’ll also be eligible for Centrelink during this time as my placement is two 500 hour blocks unpaid.
Unsure of the smartest way to tackle this

2024.05.21 12:17 thiswasmy7thchoice I bought a shitty used car and let it go back, now they’re trying to sue me

In October 2022, I signed a contract for a used 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer with a balance of 11,400. It was a horrible purchase, we had to get the transmission replaced within a month of having it. The dealership paid for it, we just had to pay the $100 deductible.
A few weeks later, I got a flat tire out of nowhere while on the way to work, and my coworker pointed out that my tires had patches all over them. Our brakes also started failing, but when we called the car lot, they said they didn’t cover wearable parts.
Unfortunately, I lost control of the steering wheel in December 2022 on an exit ramp and ended up “totaling” the car. My insurance said they would pay the value of the car ($2,638.88) and take it off my hands, or I could keep it and they would pay the car lot $1,796.00 of its value. It still ran and I didn’t want to be left without a car, plus I was under the impression that I would still have to pay off the contract if the insurance paid off the value of the car. It wasn’t until over a year later that the car lot told me that after the insurance paid it off, I wouldn’t owe the rest of the balance.
I feel like the only reason they let me keep the car was to keep getting money from me. They already knew it was a shitty car and they allowed me to keep making payments on it when they should’ve taken it back when it was totaled, despite knowing I was pregnant and having specifically asked for a family car when I bought it.
This decision left me with a car note I couldn’t afford, and car-less since no dealership would give me a car while still paying it off. The only reason why I kept paying the note was because I didn’t want a repo on my credit. I was giving them all my money while trying to take care of my son, from when he was a newborn until he was over a year old.
I kept paying off a car that didn’t work for over a year, until March 2024 when I finally decided to let it go as a voluntary repossession. The manager called me and said I would be sued and the case would be sent to the sheriffs department. I said “yall are stupid” and he said “no, you’re stupid”, and hung up the phone. When I left a review on google, the lot lied by saying that they never called me stupid, but that I had started with the insults.
I know I violated the contract, but could I at least try to get the judge to give me some leniency because of the emotional damage I’ve had while being pregnant/postpartum due to the incompetence of this used car dealership? They sold me a car that was essentially a death trap - barely functioning engine, patched-up tires, and low pedal brakes. WHILE PREGNANT.
Please help, I’m a 22 year old girl who knows absolutely nothing.

2024.05.21 12:15 magictcgmods Weekly trading thread -- trade with your fellow redditors!

RULES:
  1. No stores or dealers selling on here. We won't stop stores from responding to sell posts with buy offers, though. At that point, it's up to the seller to accept or reject the offer.
  2. Do not spam this thread. Your sell/trade offer(s) should be confined to one post per week. If you list multiple cards as separate orders, or multiple lots of cards as separate orders, do so in the same post with a clear delineation. As a seller, you may post whether you want offers within the thread or whether you want a private message. If you want to make this different for different listings, that's your prerogative. State what country you're shipping from and include shipping price+method for your own country. If you are willing to ship to other countries, say so.
  3. No eBay posts.
  4. If a card is sold/traded, edit your post and invalidate any pending offers for that card. "Short selling" is not acceptable here, since we're dealing in physical goods and shipping times may be an issue, especially if the buyer is a tournament player. Do not short sell cards.
  5. Buyers: Post your offer directly underneath a sell listing, unless you are topping someone else's offer, in which case you should post directly underneath that offer.
  6. Buyers: Feel free to post a "want" list.
  7. For the sake of preventing identity theft and/or harassment, do NOT post identifying information (name, address, paypal info) in the thread.
  8. No throwaway accounts.
  9. Needless to say, we're Magic players. We don't necessarily have to pay in cash. It's entirely up to the seller whether to consider "2 Force of Will" as a highelower bid than $160.
  10. There is also a deckbox.org trading area that can be used as well, at http://deckbox.org/communities/reddit_mtg_trades.
If you have any comments about the rules rather than about a particular auction, feel free to discuss them here.
PAYPAL FEE INFO: (Quoted from Paypal)
Free when the money comes from PayPal balance or bank account.
2.9% + $0.30 USD when the money comes from a debit or credit card or PayPal Credit
MAILING INFO: See USPS Link.
SCAMMER INFO: I will not link it directly here, but be sure to check out the scammer list on deckbox before doing any trading to ensure yourself to having a safe trade!
You probably can't mail off more than one toploader in a normal envelope+stamp due to it being too rigid; and you shouldn't do this for more than $10-20 worth of cards anyway since there's no tracking. Get a bubble mailer and get it tracked.

2024.05.21 12:14 RevolutionaryCare8 Advice for self employed - where to put tax money?

Hello, not sure if I exactly qualify for this subreddit but here goes.
I’m self employed, in a partnership with my wife. We have been bringing in around £160k a year and our strategy so far has been to use an offset mortgage account as a place to put the money we have set aside for our tax bill. This fluctuates throughout the year as we put money in and then pay our tax bills in January and July but there’s usually between £20k and £60k in there. Given the way the tax system works I am currently putting aside money for my 2026 tax bill.
We also have stocks and shares ISA’s with around £100k between them.
We’re remortgaging in the next few months and given that interest rates have risen I’m wondering whether the offset is still the best option? I quite like the fact that it keeps our tax bill money separate from our actual savings but in reality they could all be in the same place. Obviously we need to access the money at least twice a year.
Being self employed and having been very poor I’m quite concerned about being able to access my money if we need it but do you have any ideas for a better way to manage it?
(Obviously I will be asking a financial advisor this when we get to the remortgage but just thought I’d see what ideas there were here first).
Thanks!

2024.05.21 12:13 lorcan-mt Dustin Luca Leaving Salem News

Posted on his Facebook page that he is moving to a Communications job at SSU. Thanks for everything Dustin!
On Sept. 11, 2001, a series of terrorist attacks set me on a path to do three things: to correct misinformation as a life goal, to enter a field that in some way improves people’s understanding of their world, and to earn bipartisan respect in how I do it.
I’ve written an untold number of stories across 23 years and been taken to places new and old, familiar and fresh. I've interviewed rock legends, presidential candidates (well... one), and along the way met unforgettable sources ranging from a baby battling neuroblastoma to an elderly Lawrence woman growing a potato in her apartment and naming it like a son.
Of course, this path has had its drawbacks. I was told early on that “being a reporter doesn’t pay well,” and that I was entering a “dead industry” fresh from its collapse in 2008. But, after my first time talking to a doggie daycare that made the Today Show and becoming friends with a cat, I realized the career also paid in memories... amply... and there’s really no place I’ve worked that has created more memories for me than Salem. It’s the beat I’ve worked the longest as a reporter; the most recent Halloween marked my 10th in the city.
It also marked my last.
On Oct. 24, seven days before Halloween, I turned 40. I did so without having yet saved any money for retirement, and while working at least 70 hours per week at two to three jobs for the last several years. The combined paychecks still put me a good bit below median household income for the area — something that comes to mind every time I see a comment online that talks about how people should try living where they can afford to.
There's also a dark side to journalism that has emerged in the last half-decade, one that I’d argue doesn’t get enough attention. It’s one of the few industries that is entirely private while also being fully public-facing — journalists are effectively public officials, without the protections and benefits of being public officials. We take a lot of shots from readers, some of whom would delight in us being out of the job and financially destroyed, and we just chuckle and move on with our day.
For the dark side, there’s also the light. In some parts of the real world, journalists are thanked for their service as if we’re active military. I’ve been compared to nurses working the pandemic, held up as a leader stabilizing a maligned society, and invited to share my perspective and experiences with high school classrooms, podcasts, even Boy Scout troops.
Being a reporter pays well in the memories you collect along the way (thankfully they aren't subject to a tax). To that end, I’ve at times felt wealthy for having the privilege of covering a city like Salem — even with its dark underbelly actively arguing that I shouldn’t have a job or be allowed to exist.
With this double-edged sword equipped for so long, I knew I’d put it down at some point. When thinking about the kind of job it would take to leave the news industry, I found there was really only one that kept coming up in my mind: an opening in Communications at my Alma Mater, UNH. That would honestly be a dream... a position like that opening at a college campus I knew so well. To my fortune, that exact position opened in my backyard toward the end of 2023, on a college campus I know just as well as UNH — if not better.
In early June, I’ll be switching careers as I assume the role of Associate Director of External Communications at Salem State University.
I loved my college experience and always joked that if I won the lottery, I'd go back to school and get a degree in physics, do something nutty with string theory. But really, there’s something about the college environment where I’m most comfortable: everybody is there to learn and grow, and, from each graduate, society receives an opportunity for transformation. The feeling you get walking through a space like that can't really be replicated anywhere else... At least that's the fuzzy feeling I get when walking onto a college campus.
It’s hard to imagine leaving the only world I’ve known professionally and no longer covering the city I love, but I’m not going that far. I’m still working in the same beautiful city and would love for you to say “hey” when you see me out doing whatever. You may also see my byline from time to time, and I think I'd even like to continue doing “the spreadsheet” each night polls are open.
But, for now, this bro is going off the record to go back to school.

2024.05.21 12:13 Shot-Hotel Setting up a DPNI scheme/accountants offering DPNI schemes

I have been contracting for a company in the US for 2 years and paying taxes as a self employed individual, but I think under the UK definition I fit more under the employee label (I only work for them, I can't be replaced easily, etc). Because of that I have been looking at ways to rectify this from EORs (Too expensive and complicated for the company as I am the only international employee), to a DPNI scheme. I think the DPNI scheme is more manageable, but I am unsure how to start. A couple of questions I have:

2024.05.21 12:11 fraudnextdoor Is sg-traveldoc.com a scam website? (For SG Arrival Card)

We are set to go to SG this week. We learned that we were supposed to sign up for an SG Arrival Card, so my friend went to Google and signed up for it.
Upon watching various Tiktoks, wala naman namemention na payment for the arrival card, so I was shocked when my friend said she had to pay around SGD 70 each for our card.
When I went to the link that I saw on Tiktok for the card, nagwonder friend ko why it looked different from where she signed up. And iba nga yung website---sg-travellingdoc.com.
Good thing di pa nababawas sa cc nya yung amount, so she just cancelled her card. However, we input our personal details into the website (like birthday, address, complete name, etc.).
Was it a scam/fake website? What should our action steps be, considering we've shared our personal details there?
Edit: Upon googling, apparently scam nga yung website. I still want to ask about what we should do about this.

2024.05.21 12:11 InterestingOne4925 Dvla tax fine, no v5 or new keeper slip from seller

Hi all, earlier this year my son bought a car, the seller could not provide the logbook or new keeper slip, so a new one was applied for, I filled the v62 out for him and not knowing the exact date of purchase put new years eve down, as I knew this was definitely before actual date.. (A mistake? Irrelevant maybe??)
Throughout this time the car remained on our private drive, where it had been trailered to.
Cut to March 5th and he received a letter from dvla confirming sale and that a new logbook, v5, would be issued shortly, buoyed up by this he finished the last few jobs needed, to return it to the road, this included him moving it to the end and just off our drive. This meant the passenger side wheels were technically on the public road while the rest of the vehicle and driver side were on our property. A situation that was just a few hours. On the 18th he received the v5 (issued 14th) and promptly taxed the car, now showing as taxed from 1st March (insurance and mot already done). Off he sets happily using vehicle. Then, may 18th he received a letter detailing his use/keeping the vehicle on public road at midday on the 5th March, the time when he was working on it, however the fine (out of court settlement offer) appears to include back dated tax and is £105, from reading it should be £30 if anything, but shows on dvla site as taxed from 1st
So how to proceed? He is only marked as keeper from 14th March, and payed the duty ASAP to cover March, surely previous keeper has liability, seems they are trying to pin his unpaid tax on new keeper? No prior contact, so I don't believe it's escalated charges. Just a bit lost as to how to move forward, the more nominal fine it wouldn't be worth challenging, but at this rate instinct is to appeal it, or at least offer mitigatiin at a hearing as he had no means to tax or sorn until that v5 arrived, anybody been in this position, any advice appreciated

2024.05.21 12:10 XionKuriyama Might Have to Take a Garbage Loan to Pay Rent

I had to leave my job a couple months ago and I've been struggling to find work ever since. I have two weeks til rent day and my partner and I have no idea how we're going to make it. We're hoping to get on a My Chase Loan plan but we need to get approved for a credit card from them first. At this point, I'm struggling to see viable options outside of "try to pick the least predatory loan company" or "try to pick the least bad credit card company". We're demoralized and scared. Has anyone made it through a similar situation and have any idea what we can do? Or at least point us to the least bad of our bad options?

2024.05.21 12:10 randomstuff43 Am I in a coma

I feel like I am in a coma. I’m gonna start from the beginning. Back in February 2023 my mom started dating a guy we will call John. John didn’t look like any other guy she’s dated. She usually dated taller white guys with more mature personalities. But this guy was short and black and acted like he was 16. I’m 13 and at this time I was 12 and live with my mom, (31f) my sister, (10f) my grandma, (60f), and John 36m. We lived in New Jersey btw. Wedidn’t have a car but John did and he moved in a few days after my mom and him started dating. He worked at a mall in king of pressia which is around a 40 minute drive. My mom would drop him off at work at around 7am and pick him up at around 8pm. Me and my sister would go with her to pick him up but we got really bad motion sick so we took this over the counter medication that helped but made us really drowsy so we would usually fall asleep on the way home. (On the way to pick him up I would sit in the front seat and after we got him I would go in the back). My sister eventually stopped going but I didn’t. The first time I felt weird was one day we were driving to pick John up from work and I thought about needing batteries for my Xbox controller and after a few seconds she asked me if I was out of battery’s yet I said yea but didn’t mention anything about it. This happened at least 4 more times. Sorry but this part needs more background first. My mom grew up living in a trailer park which can give you a good idea how much money we had. Then one day my grandma was driving home from work and got hit buy a drunk driver. Her car was destroyed and she sued him. His defense was he was trying to eat a sandwich but that was complete bs. She was awarded 100k and she bought a house in a good part of nj. She wanted to pay a years worth of taxes in advance but my grandfather convinced her not too. After a while that money was gone and my grandfather left my grandmother for a girl my moms age and my grandmother couldn’t work and my mom moved out after she got addicted to h. After he left my mom came back and we started having random people come to our house trying to sell it because of how behind we where on taxes. But it never actually got sold. Until last year. March of last year we were told we had to leave and we had 2 months. I had lived in this house for 8 years and It was hard. We moved to Philly in a row home and my parents are scared I’ll get hit with cross fire if I got outside cause the area we live in so I can’t go past my porch. It just doesn’t feel real and I’ve felt really drowsy this whole time. It feels like a dream and I’ve always had and still have really vivid dreams. Sorry for the long post but thanks for reading.

2024.05.21 12:09 michiboy12 Why are lots of OnlyFans girls conservative?

I see that a lot of OnlyFans girls are conservative/right-wing, but what they’re doing (making porn) isn’t conservative at all. They say how good it is to be a housewife (for example) and that ‘woke’ is ruining the world. And they don’t see how bad it is what they’re doing themselves. Real, conservative women don’t sell their body online. They leave it for their husband only. And they also say that Trump is the best. I am going to guess; is it for the taxes? So that they don’t have to pay as many taxes for the money they made from their OnlyFans account?

2024.05.21 12:06 SourMushroom It would be very compassionate if Canada allowed assisted suicide

I'm a single male late 20's with a learning disability.
There is no chance I ever make enough to afford more than a rented room in a house.
Maybe if I moved far away from my mother in the lower mainland I could afford my own apartment but I don't see a point in that as she is my only valuable connection I have.
I could pick up another job but after working 40 hours a week and commuting 2 hours a day Im tired. I really dont have it in me.
Basically I just think the game sucks and isn't worth playing anymore.
My life goals aren't much, I just want to have 1 job, a used car, a dog and my own studio apartment.
Working 80 hours a week or having to live in a shared house with no privacy and roommate drama for the rest of my life just doesn't seem worth it. Id really rather not exist.
I tried to get my own apartment and even though I was more than willing to pay it they wouldn't accept me as it cost 70% of my income.
I know the government will never do anything to help my situation and it will keep getting worse, but they could at least allow assisted suicide for me and others in the same position who don't want to live like this forever.
I mean like they aren't making anything off tax revenue from me, Im sure im net negative to them after healthcare and everything. So its a win/win for both of us if they allow me quit this pointless game.
