2024.05.22 01:17 amerikiwi-traveller Very Positive Airport and In-Flight Experience

Currently onboard and wanted to share a positive experience since we often see lots of negative ones posted. I am flying United First but have no status with United (MileagePlus Paper Tier 😉) since I typically fly AA, though my employer will use whichever airline has the best schedule/price for the specific destination.
There was an accident on the interstate and traffic was backed up so I arrived at the airport later than I wanted (50 minutes before departure). Got to the bag check line and it was so backed up because of some charters going out. I couldn’t see the premier access lane through the crowd of people. Agent starts walking through the queue asking to see boarding passes so they could prioritize those with sooner flights. I thought this was very proactive. She pulled me out of the line and took me to the desk. I had two oversized crates with electronic equipment to check. They were both just shy of the 70-lb limit but over the max standard dimensions (by several inches in all directions). I was expecting to have to pay $200 each for the oversize fee. The agent was absolutely lovely and though she was stressed from the hectic situation with the charters, she had a happy smile and was efficient and friendly. She asked what was in the crates and I explained. She put fragile stickers on all four sides and the top, thanked me for trusting United, and told me not to worry about the oversize fee (Gasp! I just saved $400.).
The flight is on an E175 operated by SkyWest on the longest E-Jet route I’ve ever flown (3h39m). I made it to the gate after most of the aircraft was boarded. Flight attendant says you must be Mr. Lastname, welcome aboard. PDB offered right away. After takeoff, drink orders were taken and everyone was addressed by name. Although the flight is over 1100 miles, I’ve seen many people mention that even so, they only get offered the snack basket or the cheese plate. However, today everyone received a full tray with a chicken and pesto wrap, cheese plate, beef jerky, and salted caramel cookie.
We’ve had the captain ask the flight attendants to be seated a couple times due to thunderstorms but they have continued service right after. (I’ve often seen this used as an “excuse” to hang out in the galley the whole flight, but that wasn’t the case in either cabin.) The front FA has also come through twice after meal service to ask if people wanted top ups or a different drink.
The wifi has been stable and pretty quick and the cabin and lav are clean. I even noticed the one FA wiping down the front toilet/mirrosink and giving it a spritz of air freshener.
Both FAs have been bright and pleasant with everyone.
We aren’t on the ground yet but so far this has been a really great experience from both the airport team and the onboard team. My last couple trips on both United and American have had some issue or another (grumpy/snappy FAs, maintenance delays, etc) so this trip has been a breath of fresh air.
Well done to the agents and crew and to my fellow passengers who have thus far been normal and courteous (and sober). Even the two babies onboard have just been smiling and happy. I guess everyone catches a break once in a while! 😁

2024.05.21 23:25 ac5a7bu Same Day Standby Through a Different City

Hi everyone,
My current flight connects through SEA and I will arrive at my destination at 1230A (next day) However, I see an option to connect through MSP instead and arrive at 830P.
When I try to make this change online, it charges me a price difference, so I would like to know if a same-day standby request through MSP is possible either via phone within 24 hours of departure or at the gate.
I spoke to one phone agent who said it is not possible to be on standby through a different connecting city, however, this TPG article says:
Unlike American Airlines, Delta does not force you change to flights on the exact same routing as you originally booked. So, if you're booked from San Francisco (SFO) to Charlotte (CLT) via Atlanta (ATL), you can request to change to a flight that routes through one of Delta's other hubs like Detroit (DTW) or Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP). However, you can't swap from a connecting itinerary to a nonstop one.

2024.05.21 23:13 Trypt2k Canadian traveling to Europe - DL and rental q.

Hey all, just wondering two things if I can get some help, I haven't traveled for years to anywhere:
  1. When buying tickets on Expedia or wherever (I'm Canadian and will most likely be traveling from Toronto to maybe Vienna, or Zurich, or somewhere there), it gives an option to also get a car. Is this ok to do or would it be better to do it some other way? Is it better to get tickets directly from airlines, or websites are ok? It'll be two of us, so I'm guessing two tickets plus a car includes the whole trip and the price seems better than buying tickets then trying to rent on location.
  2. As I was about to rent, there was messages regarding something called "international driver's license". I'm not sure if this applies to Americans and Canadians, since it seems this thing is only about translation into languages, and I figure English is the go-to everywhere in Europe so not sure what's up here. Will a Canadian drivers license be good enough for the couple weeks to drive a rental car, even in countries like Croatia? Mostly I'll be in Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, maybe Switzerland.
Thanks a lot all!

2024.05.21 21:09 JezinAZ2020 CDG Airport & Connection Advice

Trying to figure out if we will have enough time for our connection at Paris CDG. We are traveling carryon only, from the Middle East to Paris CDG, arriving in Terminal 1. Our next flight is to Chicago on American Airlines from Terminal 2E at 14:40. These are separately booked tickets, so the airlines have no contractual obligation for our connection.
We have two flight options arriving at CDG: (our flight out is at 2:40pm)
  1. Arrives at 12:00 noon
  2. Arrives at 9:50 am
Considering that we'll be traveling in mid-July, just 5 days before the Olympics begins, how long would it normally take to get from Terminal 1 to 2E, factoring in no checked bags (I think we'll still have to go through passport control?). Is arriving at noon for a 14:40 flight too risky? Thanks for your feedback!

2024.05.21 20:39 NOTNINJA1 No response for over 5 weeks on my claim. Lufthansa has really gone downhill.

My wife and I were involuntarily bumped from a flight from flight 410 from Munich to JFK. They rebooked us 5 hours later to London the from London to American airline to JFK . This nightmare made our 14 hour travel day into a 33 hour travel day. The gave us a feedback ID and then ghosted us. What govt agency can I file a complaint with?

2024.05.21 19:06 Eastern_Race4805 Switching to United. Which credit card combos do you have?

Thanks for advance for reading this. I'll be moving to San Francisco next year and plan to switch my primary airline from American to United. I'd say I'd travel for pleasure about once every six weeks and usually do one to two international trips a year. I currently have a chase trifecta (CSP) and BILT as my primary two credit cards. Now that will be pivoting to united I was wondering if anyone and the Bay Area can add their two cents to what credit card combinations they have. It seems the explorer card could be a reasonable option To add to my current Credit card lineup. Think my big questions are whether to upgrade to CSR and add an Explorer Card or keep CSP and potentially get a United Club card. At the end of the day my biggest expenses are rent (thank you BILT), food and travel. I feel frustrated at times with the chest portal where I find hotels and flights would be more expensive. That being said I still want to be able to take advantage of budget asian carriers (zipair). Happy to answer more questions. Thank you!

2024.05.21 18:59 njsullyalex Question about flying airlines from countries that aren't your own

Hello, I was thinking of taking the plunge to try flying airliners outside of North America more frequently, specifically in Europe. But being American, I guess a weird part of me feels bad at the idea of flying airlines in nations I've never been to or have any cultural ties to IRL... This is gonna sound extremely dumb, but is doing so on VATSIM in any way cultural appropriation? How much would say people from Denmark/Norway/Sweden judge me if they heard an American flying an SAS callsign, Swiss people if they heard an American flying a Swiss callsign, or a Spanish person if they heard an American flying an Iberia callsign (I name these specific airlines because my go-to plane is the MD-80, so these are airlines I'm interested in flying in Europe)?
I'm probably overthinking this but this is actually a mental hurdle of mine to giving European VATSIM more of a go.

2024.05.21 14:41 Ill-River3128 American Airlines CJO Rescinded

American Airlines CJO Rescinded
I am beyond furious with American I rejected a CJO with another airline after I was verbally told I’ll be in a May 15th training class. Even tho I wasn’t assigned a May class on paper. Because of this confidence I still turned down every other CJO/training offer and cancelled all my interviews as well. Now I’m stuck waiting, I can’t reapply to any of them because of the waiting periods and I should have accepted and gone to training I had scheduled with the airline I was most excited for.
I just want to explain to everyone, to anyone still holding a.CJO from American, unfortunately you will still receive this email even if you’ve completed the pre-screenings and were awaiting a training date.
This was quite frustrating to hear happening around me (talking with others on Reddit) but it gave me a realization that I could be next. I had time to mentally prepare, but I just saw a post that caught them by storm.
Unfortunately, my conclusion is everyone will be receiving this email unless you have a confirmed training date via email. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I want to give you a chance to apply and get an interview with another airline that’s hiring rather than play this long drawn out waiting game.
