2024.05.07 17:24 TacoHaus [Fo4] AI Mods that don't scale enemy difficulty? OR Help with finding a mod that is scaling my difficulty to an insane amount.

As stated in the title I'm looking for a more immersive AI mod that doesn't scale enemies to a ridiculous level. I work a lot and like to casually play Fallout 4 feeling like a god. I don't want to struggle to fight with a sting wing because it's scaled for someone that wants it to 1 hit them or make the combat super difficult. I just wanna chill, be able to annihilate my enemies, but not have them vanilla and completely braindead when I start clappin.
Mods I've used that didn't give me what I want or I couldn't find a way to adjust them to my needs are: REAL AI (absolute garbage, enemies 1 hitting me from literally across the map, NPCs traveling 1000 miles like Vanessa Carlton just to kill a mole rap), Combat AI Empowered (still getting shit on right out of the vault by Sanctuary bloatflies)
My Load Order generated by LOOT (which is probably most likely a culprit in my difficulties But it's been incredibly stable and I'd prefer not to fuck with it too much). If there is a mod in here that is making things more complicated for my gameplay difficulty I can't find it.
TL;DR looking for a AI mod that doesn't make enemies smarter but not mercilessly difficult or survival difficulty. I play on Very Easy, because after a stressful day work I want an absolute cakewalk for a rpg.

TL;DR - I have my first girlfriend, and my friends think I'm letting her dictate too much.
Among my friends, I used to be the guy who was perpetually single. I had hookups and a few fuckbuddies, but it reached the point where my friends (male and female, plus one nb) stopped making jokes when they stopped seeming like jokes. So they were all as thrilled as I was when I got a second date with Alice eight months ago, and we've been seeing each other ever since.
This probably won't come as a shock, but Alice make more money than me. She doesn't take me on vacations to Greece or anything, but she does like to spoil me. Once, she insisted on taking me shopping for a few new outfits. It's probably not the kind of clothes I would have gotten myself, but she paid for them and nearly tore them off when we got back to her place, so I can't complain. I told my friend that story and he laughed.
Another time, Alice asked me if I could shave more. My facial hair grows in pretty fast, and I'm lazy and introverted, so I usually clean up about once a week. I figured it was a fair ask considering she's the one kissing my face, so I got into the habit of shaving more (same thing for pubic hair).
This all came up when I was out with a group of friends for drinks a week back. We're pretty comfortable with each other, so one friend asked me if I had styled my pubes for Valentine's Day. I laughed, and explained the joke when people asked for clarification. A few people didn't laugh like the rest of us, and one girl asked if that's why I started shaving more often. I confirmed this, and she told me it was a sign of abuse that Alice was making me change my identity. I clarified that she wasn't making me do anything, I did because appearance-wise, Alice's opinion on me is really the only one that matters at the moment. I mentioned that there was a hairstyle that she suggested for me, and a lot of friends seemed to agree that that's a classic sign of abuse. I began to get upset, and I had to leave early.
There are a few friends who I haven't spoken to since then, and I haven't mentioned this to Alice. My friends and I never discussed this aspect of dating, but to me, it makes sense that if Alice is the one who spends so much time looking at me, it's fair that I take her opinion into account, especially when she's footing the bill. One of my best friends who was with us that night says that she's worried I'm being taken advantage of due to my inexperience, which really hurt because she used to really push for me to meet girls. She's had experience with being in an actual abusive relationship, but that confuses me even more as to how she could think Alice is like that.

[FO4] Making IHO & AN76 work together?
As in the subject, I'm playing a survival run and I am running Flashy(JoeR) - Advanced Needs 76. During game-play I discovered IHO - Immersive Hunting Overhaul and fell in love with it. Now the problem is that these two seem to overlap a lot and I can't seem to find any compatibility patches. Thus: are there any compatibility patches somewhere? If not, what would be the mod/load order and MCM configs to make these run together as much as possible?
The way I have it setup as of now is:
  • AN76 food spoilage off for IHO on.
  • For recipes there's no choice, it's IHO only as far as I can tell.
  • For "farming" there seems to be a problem with "extract seeds" as those come out of AN76 spoiled fruits. I guess that could be mitigated by ensuring via MCM AN76 "spoilage" takes precedence over IHO.
  • Other things i forgot but they conflict?
Any tips on that? Anybody running a similar setup?

2024.02.25 23:35 Guilty-Meetings My opinions on Koreans in America / Korean Americans as a Korean American

TW: racism, colorism, fatphobia, SA, queerphobia
I wasn't sure if this should be labeled with TW or with the topic at hand, so mods feel free to change it. I also tried to list any specifics that might be mentally draining and hurtful above.
As I skim by some of these posts on this subreddit, I often see a lot of people say things akin to "they were born/raised/lived in x, they should know better [in regards to topics that are multicultural]".
In my opinion, having these kind of expectations are honestly a lot in the sense that I don't expect people raised in an international environment to be any less or more bigoted or ignorant than the people raised in a homogenous country like Korea. This is going to be long, so drop down to a TLDR at the end if you want.
I'm not going to be talking about every type of Asians/East Asians and just focus on my experiences with other Koreans I've met and talked to while I was growing up and now. I would also like to include that I've lived in a white suburban area of New York, a multicultural suburban area of Alabama, and currently live in a multicultural suburban (adjacent to large city) area in Texas, so that might skew my experiences with Koreans. Feel free to share your opinions or experiences if they differ from mine as I'm aware I tended to live in areas where people tend to generally be more bigoted anyways.
I feel that at least in America, where I've lived, there are large communities to be found in churches. It's obvious that as a minority, people find comfort and solace in people who are of the same ethnicity/race, and for Koreans, it's often in churches. There is nothing wrong in believing in Christianity/branches of such, but it is hard to deny that there is a level of institutionalized hate towards members of the LGBT+ community as well as a foundation based on patriarchy that often bleeds into complete misogyny in terms of family dynamics, and sometimes even social dynamics outside the family. Add on the certain levels of Confucianism where children must always respect their mother, father, and elders, and a culture that often focuses on lookism (e.g. putting a photo on a resume) that can translate into fatphobia and colorism.
Maybe some of the readers already see where I am going with this, but despite living in a multicultural environment, a lot of Koreans STILL tend to flock together and mostly socialize amongst one another rather than branching out. I fully believe in order to learn and be interested about another culture you need to make active efforts to connect to those people. However, I felt that most Koreans spent those efforts on building another homogenous community that centered around Koreans. Actions and words that would normally be judged elsewhere were allowed in the "safe havens" of Korean communities such as adult women / ajumma(deul) / saying things like "You're so dark", "Your nose is so fat", or trying to look into my underwear to see my pubic hair growing or touch my breasts to feel their growth. This is likely due to a sense of familiarity (my mother got along with them) and a general lack of concern for nudity to people of the same sex (e. g. in public bathhouses scrubbing each other's backs and such). This is less of a focus on the level of trauma I went through, but a demonstration of what kind of behavior still continued in an "international environment" in the privacy of a homogenous community.
This created an isolation where their cultural beliefs could continue and a lack of effort was made in understanding other people's culture or beliefs such as learning about children's consent, "gentle parenting" (often talked about in middle-upper class White communities - exactly where I lived) to learning about racism that other communities like BIPOC go through. They are painfully aware of the racism they themselves face, but remained fairly ignorant to concepts like microaggression with hairstyles or beauty because it wasn't relatable or understandable to them without making an active effort to connect to the communities who are faced with such issues.
As I initially was in a White community, I thought it may be that the racism they faced were bad enough that these "havens" were necessary that tended to block their chances to further understanding and build camaraderie. However, I then moved down to Alabama, where I spent most of my life growing up (about 9 years). The area I lived in was rife with institutionalized racism where private and public schools were heavily segregated (Black and White) due to economic issues (e.g. even just a couple years ago they enacted a law that certain qualified families can use thousands of their state tax dollars that would initially go into developing education in public schools to go into tuition for private schools). This area was right next to a Korean mega corporation plant and had several Koreans in the area due to work. I first attended a majority White private elementary school for a couple years, where Koreans still flocked to each other. When I switched over to a majority Black public middle school, Koreans still continued to flock to each other. It made it easy, especially since there were Korean churches every 2-3 blocks where they found community in each other. Both of these groups were friendly and cordial to everyone else of course, but they were actual friends only with Koreans. This only continued till I left Alabama entirely, where my public high school was mostly equally distributed amongst White, Black, and different types of Asians. About 10% of my graduating class were first and second generation Koreans.
There were really 2 main criteria to be in the Korean in-group.
1) Share Korean values and beliefs (not everyone would share all of them, but there were groups for each, i.e. lookism v. academia)
- fatphobia and colorism (e.g. "Have you gained weight recently", "you're fat" "well you're ugly", "this new BB compact makes you look lighter and brighter" (and no they did not mean just the evenness of tone))
- racism towards Black/Hispanic people (e.g. "[insert name] (who is Black) is so stupid haha" (making fun of questions asked during class), "I don't know why he (who is Black) doesn't get it I explained it to them like 10 times" (it's not a big deal until you realize they don't say the same things to Korean peers))
2) Attend a Korean church (many of my peers ended up being queerphobic and misogynistic - internalized misogyny for the women)
- queerphobic ("being gay is wrong", "that's gross (referring to trans people)", "even if you're gay, you can go to heaven if you don't act on it")
- misogynistic ("you can't have sex before marriage (fine as a personal belief, problematic policing other women)", "well the husband should handle the money that's why you need to marry the right person (when bringing up topic of abusive relationships)")
Unfortunately, and fortunately, I was never in the "in-group" due to going to an American church at some point, announcing I was atheist to my peers, living with an abusive parent that made it difficult to make friends anyways, and perchance steering me away from being any ism/phobic regardless due to the amount of hate my parent would show at home to people. However, if none of these things were factors even I could have been just as ignorant and invalidating towards struggles other people face. All in all, this is just to say, just because a Korean person lives in a more multicultural part of the world does not mean they interact with said cultures on a level that makes them interested or understanding of those people. I think instead of holding international Koreans to a higher standard, we should just hold everyone to the same standard to be sensitive and empathetic to people regardless.
Finally, I would also like to add in that there are plenty of Koreans who are in fact empathetic and knowledgeable, and while it's been about 5 years since I last visited Korea, I like to think that the country as a whole are hopefully being more socially progressive and listen to struggles of minorities of all types, albeit with ups and downs. I also think there are positive cultural beliefs that make Koreans, aka me, who we are and I am ultimately proud of being who I am. I just want to explain that there are definitely dark sides to some of our culture and beliefs, and it's up to the individual to sort out what they want to follow.
TLDR: International Koreans often live in a bubble and living in a multicultural community does not guarantee they will be intimately interacting with people of those cultures. Therefore, they may remain just as ignorant or bigoted as if/when they were living in Korea. So instead of expecting them to be more educated, we should just expect all of them to be more educated in general.

Dear Redditz :) I've recently got F4 GOTY 1st time ever and as of now already clocked 400 hours. I still want more :) I'm coming from 1500+ hours of modded Skyrim gameplay (and obviously from the 90's F1, F2 and Fallout Tactics *yayks*, F3 and FNV) thus since start I went for modded gameplay.
I completed my first as a dude, I'm halfway through with my second as a chick. I've googled extensively for mod lists and recommendations to suit my play-style (towards realism, survival, difficulty, immersion) but I'm wondering what great things I may have missed - hence:
I ask you for tips and pointers. Also - if any of these are redundant/obsolete - please let me know,
Also, on top of the below, I'm running a lover lab setup for adult contentz but I guess it's not kosher to post here? EDIT [2024-02-11]: I've noticed other reddits have LL content, thus I am updating my modlist to include LL content :) If this is some sort of violation of rules, let me know please.

2024.01.18 20:16 night-swimming704 Help identifying movie by nude scene

I’ve been trying to figure this one out for years. When I was a kid (pre internet, when we had to work to see boobs) I used to stay up late watching the premium movie channels and would record the nude scenes in movies which I could then watch later. There was one particular scene I recorded one night that was very memorable to adolescent me and I’ve never been able to identify the movie it was from.
Here’s what I know: The scene features two women in what I presume to be a bedroom. They start out in at least bikinis/underwear and dance with each other, gradually stripping down until they were both fully nude.
There was a man in a bed watching the two of them with excitement, and I believe they eventually climbed in with him and that was when the scene cut (or my tape stopped).
This would have aired on a premium cable channel around 1993-1996.
There’s also some details that are either speculation on my part, or parts of my memory I’m not 100% about:
They were all being watched, either through a glass window in the room, or a camera mounted in the room. It was as if the man was being studied for his response to eroticism. But since this was a running theme in a ton of 90s softcore movies, I very easily could be imagining this part.
I would guess by the hairstyles and the volume and shape of pubic hair on the two women, it would be mid to late 80s. I’m pretty sure the underwear the women were wearing was also that bright, neon, silky stuff that was all the rage during that time.
I don’t believe this is any sort of “softcore” film, just a pretty normal movie from that time period that included some gratuitous nudity. Very possibly one of the many DTV movies that were made for the VHS rental boom.
It honestly seems very much like a scene from a Jess Franco movie, but to my knowledge he doesn’t have any English movies from that time period and I don’t recall ever seeing subtitled or dubbed movies on premium stations, so I don’t think it’s one of his.

I have heavily modded Fallout 4 but even before heavily modding it, when taking the boat to Far Harbor or mono rail to Nuka World game crashes on loading screen. I've looked at it with buffout but it doesnt say anything. What should I do? Here's my highly fucked up load order; PLUGINS:

Hello,
suddenly I get Crashes as soon as i exit the workshop. I was building institute stuff inside Vault 88, exit workshop mode without any problems and did a quicksave. After loading this save I get the crashes every time I exit the workshop. Without entering the workshop I can play, fast travel etc. without problems.
I tried to tweak the light intensity of my lights in vault 88 with 3 different mods. All of them didnt work and I uninstalled them again. I was able to enter and exit the workshop after deinstalling those mods and do the quicksave that leads now to the CTD on exiting the workshop. Loading a savegame before I started to build inside Vault 88 doesnt have this problem. I also used modpos and modangle to adjust some pieces manually. I dunno if that can cause this problem, too.
Any chance to fix tis problem without loading an older save?

Hey everyone,
I've been lurking here for a bit, and just wanted to share my own personal journey in hopes that it might help others or at least give them more information as we all deal with this annoying disease. Its a bitch for sure, but.... compared to the fear and despair that gripped me when I thought I was going to die from cancer (cancer free for 2 years so far!) , it's not as bad.... nothing like a shittier situation to make you appreciate a shit situation...lol
So I'm sure I had this for a while, but I discovered it in early March, as I was dyeing my hair to cover up the grey and noticed a bald spot as I was running my hands through my scalp. Thought nothing of it at first, since I thought it was the size of a dime, but upon closer inspection, realized I had 2 large patches on the back of my head and one tiny one as you can see from the pics. I simply had no idea it was this severe....
As soon as I noticed - I found this sub, read through it all and made an appointment with my dermatologist. Luckily, I was able to see my derm within 1-2 days of finding these patches and the derm got me on steroid shots and clobetasol solution ( I had to ask for the clobetasol since she didn't think it was necessary - but learned about it on this sub) . In these last 2 months, I've noticed some decent regrowth, no new spots, and the current spots don't seem to be getting bigger.
Some overall lifestyle facts about me in March: 45 yo, Asian, no family history of AA, exercise frequently ( 5x + / week - HIIT, Hot Yoga) , drank wine rather heavily (i.e. almost a bottle daily), eat very healthy (no junk food, no sodas , very little fried food) , drink water or carbonated water for the most part , severe vitamin D deficiency ( learned about this from my oncologist when I was dealing with the cancer issue - and didn't take it seriously at the time). Didn't think my job was high stress, but as part of upper mgmt at a mid size company, dealing with lots of high pressure situations, its possible? maybe I'm just used to it? Doubtful its work stress induced - but I do have other suspicions (shared a little later in this post).

My regimen: Here's what I've been doing about it so far, and what I changed about my daily habits. I think its been working for the most part, but obviously not a doctor or rocket surgeon, just a random dude on the internet battling AA so take it with a grain of salt:
​
  1. Steroid shots - by my dermatologist every month into all my spots (so far , 2 rounds and a 3rd happening this month)
  2. Clobetasol Propionate (Rx) solution - Using Topical 1x per day in the morning
  3. Rosemary /Castor oil solution - some random thing I bought off amazon 1 x per day at night
  4. Alcohol - Cut back on the wine drinking heavily - i.e. I used to drink everyday (half a bottle to a full bottle of wine) down to no drinking on M-Th, and maybe 2 bottles over the course of the weekend.
  5. Started Intermittent fasting - doing the 16/8 method (not super strict - but for the most part follow it)
  6. Stopped whey protein powder - been reading that dairy might be inflammatory and that alopecia starts from the gut...so am cutting back on dairy. I am now protein deficient which is also a problem.
  7. Added a daily vitamin regimen consisting of -
  • Vitamin D - 2x 5K iu (10K iu total) of a store bought brand daily (except on sundays - where I take a 50K iu prescription dose of vitamin D called Calciferol)
  1. I never took my oncologist seriously on the vitamin D deficiency, because I hate exposing my skin to the sun and thought it was just me hate getting tanned.... and to be honest, was more interested in hearing about cancer markers and not about what vitamin I was deficient in
  • Multi vitamin - Centrum for Men
  • Vitamin B complex
  • Zinc 50 mg
Regrowth: About 2-3 weeks ago, my gf has noticed regrowth and just weird scraggly hairs growing from my spots (mostly white, and to be honest - how scraggly they are, they look like pubic hair lol , but at this point I will take anything ...) and quite a few baby hairs that are jet black growing in a small ring like formation on the outer perimeter - so things seem to be on the mend.

How I think it might have started
I don't know what caused this, and I usually have a mind set of addressing the root cause of things. Might be a fools errand to figure it out, since doctors say that its unknown, and maybe there really isn't one - my own personal anecdotal assumptions are as follows (based on nothing but my own personal feelings, backed with zero scientific evidence / data):

Assumption 1: I caught COVID in November of 2022 - a light case, literally felt like crap for maybe 1 day, but other than that was totally fine. Some people might say it was the vaccine- but for me, I had 5 total COVID vaccine shots ( 2 moderna original jabs, 2 boosters, and 1 J&J bivalent booster) over the last 2.5 years so doubt that its the vaccine shots.... but do speculate that it was actually catching COVID that changed everything. After catching COVID, I noticed I had a resurgence of eczema on my hands that I used to have as a child (haven't had it for 30+ years) , and also noticed my scalp getting itchy here and there, and upon seeing a dermatologist, was told that I had seborrheic dermatitis ( a new problem I never had before) - all after my bout with COVID.... for a person who generally doesn't have health problems, It all seemed to hit at once (then again, Im 45 yo, not young anymore - so maybe it could be age... although by looking at me, I am frequently mistaken for someone in their early 30's)
Assumption 2: went through a divorce in early 2022. Was a very amicable split - but was pretty stressful overall and did some REALLY heavy drinking during that time (talking half bottles of whiskey here and there throughout the week) .

I do see a lot of talk about connection with the gut - which seems to be a popular topic, and I see grain free, I see the AIP diet - but not entirely sure what makes sense to me. I've eaten rice all my life , so maybe its not the grain, I've drank whey protein powder for the past 10+ years daily so maybe its not dairy, or maybe its just my age and lifestyle so far that was the straw that broke the camels back and AA decided to knock on the door. I will probably never know.

Side notes and other Random stuff:
Grooming - having hair on the shorter side, its been a pain in the ass every morning combing my hair a certain way to cover my AA spots - and having to use hairspray to hold hair in place. I decided to buy TOPPIK (hair fibers) and tried applying it this morning. I was lazy about it and I think I could have done a better job, but having mostly jet black hair - a spot that is flesh colored really stands out . Just a dab of this stuff and it instantly masked my spots while I slowly regrow my hair and deal with this. Figured if anyone was on the fence on trying it, so far I'm sold on it.... then again, its been 1 day with TOPPIK.

Self Confidence - its been a hit for sure, but we are our own harshest critics. One thing that I find helpful is that I tell myself that I've dealt with worse, and if its cosmetic, there are much worse fates to deal with (i.e. death). Granted, I've been lucky (?) enough to have a comparison point like that. But for those of us that don't have that, I've also found it helpful being pretty open about my AA with people, telling them what it is, and what it could lead to, and that I might one day come in with a complete buzz cut, and treat it like its no big deal. I've learned that controlling the narrative is critical for any situation you want to create.
In my experience, people usually treat a situation with the same attitude you approach it with... overall, my friends are supportive/indifferent, and my coworkers seem to be indifferent to it as well. If they see a spot on my head - they know what it is, it doesn't become an issue with people wondering what it is. The confidence you carry yourself with, regardless of the situation is what defines your reality, not your hair or hairstyle. I firmly believe that most people are so self-absorbed with their own life and problems they frankly don't have time for yours.
case in point #1: I remember seeing my cousin date a gal with Alopecia Universalis - at first, I noticed she had no hair, figured it must be health related thing, and after giving it < 1 second of thought - never gave it another. she was a nice gal.
case in point #2: I have a coworker who has Alopecia Universalis - and only realized recently that's what he has. Been working with the guy 6 years to date, and I just thought he had no hair and that was it. Literally noticed the first time I met him - didn't think less of him. He's a great coworker, super friendly, and very talented musically. Those are the traits I remember him by, not by his lack of hair.
Dating: I did recently start dating my now gf in December - and was a bit concerned how she would react to all of this. She's been very nonchalant about it, helps measure my spots, look for new spots, or apply clobetasol to them. Overall it isn't even a thing to her... again, my attitude towards it is her attitude towards it.

annnnd .....that's so far been my journey on this involuntary ride - I wish all of us the best, quick regrowth, and zero recurrences! Hopefully this post might give people insight, some data points, or even simple reassurance that you're not alone when dealing with this !

hi, question about non-trich hair removal for those of you who limit your access to tweezers.
i have a very supportive partner who keeps my tweezers in a locked safe (lol) and only lets me use them under supervision. this is amazing obviously and very helpful in reducing trich-related picking and pulling. but it's not very convenient to have someone observe me plucking my moustache/eyebrows every time i need to and it sucks being this dependent on another person for something so small. for example they went out of town for a week and i asked for the safe combo so i could pluck my eyebrows, but now my fingers, toes, legs, and pubic area are a mess from picking and pulling 😞.
so, do any of you block your access to tweezers and if so how do you remove body hair you actually want to remove?? i don't love the idea of shaving/dermaplaning my face (i'm busy and also lazy). do waxes for lip/eyebrows actually work? and what about those stubbornly-rooted little dark hairs that like to pop up on chins and out of moles?! help.
wish i could find ways to actually reduce my picking/pulling, but having a buzz cut and not having access to tweezers are the only things that work for me soooo given the hairstyle limitation i'd really like to be able to have cute eyebrows and no 'stache!

I read this book a couple of years ago and while I really enjoyed it, parts of it were disturbing and I don't want to mislead anyone into reading something they might not be comfortable reading about. Third, there are a bunch of little references to various Dickens novels throughout this book. (They don't call Sarah Waters "The Lesbian Charles Dickens" for nothing.) Feel free to point out any you find (especially if they're from books I haven't read! I'm curious about references I might have missed), but, again, keep in mind that even minor details from other books need to be spoiler tagged as per bookclub's policy.

Below are summaries of Chapters 1 to 3, plus some contextual info. I'll also post some discussion prompts in the comment section. SUMMARY
Chapter 1
We meet Susan "Sue" Trinder, who recounts her childhood as an orphan in the Borough in South London, surrounded by the criminal element. She was raised by Mrs. Sucksby, who is a baby farmer. Of all the infants in her care, Mrs. Sucksby favors Sue the most, as if she is a prized jewel. Sue wonders if this is because she looks like Mrs. Sucksby's own dead child. Sue is taken out a-begging with an older girl, Flora, who is a fingersmith (a pickpocket), but is frightened by a stage play of Oliver Twist. Flora is slapped by Mrs. Sucksby for returning Sue in such a state of screaming. Flora later ends up transported for her crimes. Sue's father figure is the savvy Mr. Ibbs, who runs a locksmith shop, and who also fences stolen goods.
Sue gets an MBA-quality education in the criminal enterprise just by watching how the people around her winnow out a living. (Sewing dog hides on other dogs? Is that ingenious or WTF?) Sue learns her alphabet by unpicking monograms from stolen handkerchiefs, and learns to cipher by handling coins. She knows the back alleys and quick ways to move stolen goods.
According to Mrs. Sucksby, Sue's mother showed up on their doorstop one day, heavily pregnant and wanted by the police. She left Sue in Mrs. Sucksby's care, and went off to do one last job, but she never returned. The job had ended in homicide, and Sue's mother was hanged for murder.
“You are waiting for me to start my story. Perhaps I was waiting, then. But my story had already started—I was only like you, and didn’t know it.”
At age seventeen, Sue is recruited into a scheme by Richard Rivers a.k.a Gentleman, another member of their criminal circle. He plans to marry into a fortune, and he needs Sue to help him. A gentleman scholar in an out-of-the-way village has hired Gentlemen to manage his picture collection. The man's niece resides there too as his secretary, and she stands to inherit a fortune of 15,000 pounds if she marries. This niece is a fey young woman, and has become seemingly attracted to Gentleman, from whom she takes painting lessons. However, his attempts at wooing are stymied by the presence of her maid, who acts as an inconvenient chaperone. In a stroke of fortune for Gentleman, this maid has caught the scarlet fever, and Gentleman proposes to have Sue replace her as the niece's lady's maid. Gentleman intends to marry the niece, jiggle her, and thus ruin her for any other man. Her uncle will not be able to annul the marriage then. And then Gentleman plans to throw her in a madhouse after he gets her inheritance. The little criminal gang in the Borough discuss the details of the plan. Sue negotiates 3,000 pounds and her pick of the niece's finery as her cut of the scam.

Chapter 2
The gentleman scholar is named Christopher Lilly, and his niece is Maud. They live in Briar, near the village of Marlow. The Borough gang are in a flurry of activity to get Sue into the role of Miss Maud's maid. Gentleman recommends Sue to Maud Lilly, posing as his old nurse's dead sister's daughter who is looking for a maid's position. Gentleman coaches Sue in the duties of a lady's maid, such as doing a lady's hair and helping her change clothes. Sue tries her hand at doing Dainty's hair, and practices dressing up a chair with a seemingly endless array of underclothes and a corset. Gentleman demonstrates that he knows his way around under a petticoat as he deftly removes a stocking while seemingly giving the corseted chair an orgasm.
A trunk and clothes are procured for Sue from a crooked warehouse. Sue is taught how to speak to her mistress like a proper lady's maid, and her hairstyle and dress are changed to suit a servant. Gentleman gives her an oh-so-clever alias: Susan Smith, for she is a fingersmith, after all.
Mrs. Sucksby is so excited at the prospect of Sue making a fortune, she squeezes an infant like it's a handful of dough. The poor doughy baby! Sue is drilled on her duties as a maid until she has got everything straight, because she will have to fool not just Mr. Lilly and Maud Lilly, but an entire house full of servants.
A letter arrives from Maud, advising that her maid, Agnes, is being sent back to Cork, Ireland to convalesce. Maud will be glad to take on the maid recommended by Gentleman. The Borough gang have a roast pig's head for dinner in honor of Sue, and they merrily drink rum flip. Mr. Ibbs whistles up a tune while Dainty Warren and John Vroom dance a polka.
Sue grows melancholy as she is reminded that she will have to say goodbye to the only family she knows. She goes up to the attic alone and stares out over Horsemonger Lane Gaol and the roofs of the Borough as she worries. Mrs. Sucksby comes looking for Sue and quells her doubts by saying that Sue's mother would have been proud to see Sue do this. Sue asks if it hurts to be hanged, and Mrs. Sucksby says a hanging is a quick death, and that is preferable to some other ways a body might go. Sue returns to the kitchen to make merry with the rest of the gang.
The next day, Sue sets off with a fake letter of reference written by Gentleman. Mrs. Sucksby cries during goodbyes, as she has never been parted from Sue for more than a day. The fog delays travel, but Sue finally boards her train, sitting next to a woman with a baby. Gentleman warns her that she will be late for the trap that will await her at Marlow. When the baby cries, Sue suggests the application of gin, to the disapproval of the woman passenger.
Sue is famished because of the much-delayed journey. At Maidenhead, a man chats her up, and Sue recalls an anecdote from Dainty, who was once paid a pound by a man on a train to hold his cock. Alas, no cock-adjacent shenanigans occur on Sue's train ride to Marlow.
At Marlow, the trap that fetches the post is long gone, and the train driver and guard laugh when Sue asks if a cab could be had. Sue rightly fucks them off, the useless pair of them, and starts off with her trunk. They threaten to tell the steward, Mr. Way, of her foul language. Fortunately, a cart pulls up, and the driver is William Inker, Mr. Lilly's groom. He had been sent to fetch Sue because Miss Maud had been fretting after her.
As they ride to Briar, Sue hears the clock chiming across the fields. In quick succession, we meet some of the servants. Mr. Mack is at the lodge near the gate to Briar, which Sue initially mistakes for Briar itself. When they arrive at the great house, they take the servant's entrance. A candle flutters at a window and goes out. Sue meets Mrs. Stiles, the housekeeper, and some of the other servants who titter at her.
Over supper in her pantry, Mrs. Stiles remarks that Maud went over her to hire her own maid, and she proceeds to lay out the rules of the house, as well as all the little perks that the servants expect to come their way from their mistress' leavings. Sue finds this all very petty, and keeps her eyes on the big windfall she is to earn from gentleman's scheme.
Mrs. Stiles shows Sue to her room, and Sue is much surprised to discover that her bedroom adjoins Maud's bedroom. There is but a door between them, though she cannot see or hear anything from the other room. Mrs. Stiles seems to her like a gaoler with her keys. Quite homesick, Sue thinks how like a gaol her room is, and settles into her damp, cold bed.

Chapter 3
In the light of day, Sue can see that Briar is a rundown house. Sue also turns her appraising eye on the servants. Margaret, the maid, empties her chamber pot, but thanking her is an apparent misstep. And the steward, Mr. Way, earns Sue's derision when he pretends he knows of her fictitious ex-employer in London.
Mrs. Stiles takes Sue to meet Maud. Maud is young and affable, and Sue thinks she is a pigeon who knows nothing. She surprises Sue by telling her that Mrs. Stiles had loved her like a mother ever since she arrived at Briar as an orphaned girl. Mrs. Stiles flushes red at this comment.
Maud wonders if Sue's previous mistress was far finer a lady than herself. Sue plunges into her fake persona and reassures Maud. She gives Maud the fake letter of reference for her perusal, though she momentarily fears that Maud can spot a mistake in the letter. Sue unwillingly confesses that she cannot read, and fumbles when Maud tests her. Sue volunteers to learn, but Maud perplexingly says she won't allow it, and hints that this is significant in her uncle's house.
While Maud spends the morning attending to her uncle, Sue sets about straightening Maud's moldy and decrepit rooms. Sue folds away Maud's nightdress, and stuffs her crinoline into her press. She discovers a dressing table filled with gloves. Sue finds a little box and promptly picks the lock. Inside, there is a miniature portrait of a lady dressed in clothing that was fashionable 20 years ago. Sue guesses this is Maud's mother.
A maid brings her some tea, and Sue returns the tea tray to the kitchen afterwards, thinking to make herself useful. However, this is not well-received by the kitchen servants. Sue meets Maud and the crotchety Mr. Lilly in his library, who forbids her (or any servant, for that matter) from venturing past a brass finger set into the floor of the library, in case they spoil the books by looking at them. (Yes, quite WTF, I completely agree, but the servants might have laser eyes, we don't know they don't...)
Sue and Maud lunch together in Maud's rooms, and Maud refuses to eat the soft-boiled eggs. She gets a bit of yolk on her gloves, and immediately goes to change to a fresh pair. She tosses the yolky pair of gloves into her fireplace.
Maud fancies a walk outdoors, and she and Sue slowly pick clothes for her, and Maud must squeeze her crinolined self out of the front door, "like a pearl coming out of an oyster". Maud visits her mother's tomb to clean it up and trim the grass around it. Sue and Maud visit the river nearby, and unbeknownst to Sue, this is the Thames. She is homesick to know that a passing barge is heading to London.
Back at Briar, Maud sups with her uncle, and Sue dines with the servants. Sue learns that Mr. Lilly forces Maud to wear gloves, and makes her read to him and naught else.
When bedtime comes, Sue and Maud are both tipsy from their dinnertime drinks. Sue undresses Maud, removing her layers of clothing to find her soft as butter underneath. Maud draws Sue close, comparing Sue's and her hair colors, and their feet. The barest hint of titillation the reader might glean from all this close proximity nakedness disappears abruptly, for Maud has donned another pair of gloves for bed! Maud asks Sue to keep the door that connects their adjoining bedrooms ajar. Sue spies Maud unlocking her box and gazing at the miniature within.
In the middle of the night, Maud cries out for Agnes, her previous maid. Sue rushes in to find Maud quite distraught and fearful that a man is there. Sue checks Maud's dark parlor, quite unnerved. Sue returns to Maud's bedroom and espies something long and white and gleaming, and is quite sure it is Maud's long-dead mother's ghost come back to haunt her. Sue screams! Maud screams! And then Sue realizes it is Maud's crinoline which has sprung out of Maud's linen-press and wakened her with the noise. Sue clasps Maud to her bosom until she calms, though she keeps addressing Sue as "Agnes". Maud begs her not to leave, so they both fall asleep together in Maud's bed.
They spend the following days much like the first, with Maud calling Sue to sleep in her bed every night, quite like sisters. Sue doesn't know if it is normal for a maid to sleep with her mistress.
Then Gentleman came. (Ooooh, what an ending!)

2023.04.02 23:00 seventennorth Dress Rehearsal Report: Quinta Brunson/Lil Yachty [4/1/23]

back with another dress report! i tried really hard to remember as many things as possible this time, and i had a couple other people with me which helped, haha.

SECTION 1: CUT SKETCHES & APPEARANCES

[note: some of these details like the character names probably aren’t exactly what they were at dress, i’m just filling them in as best as i can remember.]
DENVER AIRPORT [pretape]
quinta brunson’s character is on a flight to denver, and as she lands she gets a call from her long-term boyfriend played by dismukes that he’s surprising her at the gate. she’s genuinely moved for a second, but then catches sight of herself in a mirror and, scored to dramatic music, realizes how busted she looks (travel pillow, bed hair, pajamas). she quickly dashes into the bathroom and starts applying deodorant, fixing her hair, shaving her legs, etc—this keeps escalating and escalating as dismukes keeps pontificating on all the surprise plans he’s laid for them. ex. he says he booked them a hotel, she groans and runs into the bathroom to shave her pubic hair. the camera pans to the other women in the bathroom who are also frantically glamming themselves up. dismukes says “hey, i’m seeing other people from your flight come out, are you sure you’re still on the plane?” and she goes “yeah, of course i am!” and she runs up to one of the women n the bathroom (gardner) and gardner does a fake pilot voice to confirm brunson is still on the plane. finally, brunson, fully changed in a black cocktail dress and a sleek hairstyle, meets dismukes at the gate and realizes he showed up in cargo shorts and crocs. i really think they’re gonna upload this one to youtube, i thought it was the best pretape of the night and they can’t reuse it bc it’s so brunson-heavy. pretty warm audience reception.
SAW TRAP
day, thompson, and squirm’s characters wake up in a bare warehouse room, tied to three chairs in a row. they’re freaking out and saying they shouldn’t have “taken those drugs from that european guy in the club.” then a jigsaw tape flickers to life on the television monitors—quinta brunson in costume and a deep voice changer—and starts explaining that day has a reverse bear trap around his neck that will go off in 45 seconds, thompson has a spinning blade lowering over him that will carve into him in a minute, and
 then she reaches squirm, and pauses, and goes, suddenly in her normal voice, “oh my god, is that you, claire?” squirm: “what?” brunson: “claire smith? i’m kendra whittaker.” squirm: “oh my god, kendra ‘stinky pits’ whittaker? is that you?” they start catching up—their high school friend went on the bachelorette and embarrassed herself, squirm got married which is why brunson didn’t recognize her new surname, brunson graduated and decided to start kidnapping people in european clubs etc. brunson mentions that she kidnaps people who did things like hit-and-runs a decade earlier, and squirm giggles and says, “guilty as charged!” while they’re chatting, mikey day gets the bear trap shut over his head and everyone gets sprayed with blood, and the same thing later happens with thompson and the spinning blade. with thompson’s very long death, there’s about a good 15 seconds that’s just squirm being silently sprayed with blood. finally, jigsaw walks over and says she’s going to give squirm a gift: a diving helmet full of killer bees. she starts to lower it on squirm’s head, and squirm screams in pain, but brunson says, “hey, i didn’t even do anything yet.” and squirm says “haha, sorry, i just scare really easily.” then brunson actually lowers the helmet and squirm dies horrifically. the audience was quite warm on this at first but by the last minute there were almost no laughs and it felt a little awkward. i personally thought the initial concept was funny and i do think they could bring it back if they can figure out a way to stick the landing.
JAMES BOND
we open on an elaborate casino scene, with jaj as a blofeld-type character sitting across a poker table from longfellow as james bond. jaj summons his “charm” by snapping his fingers, and heidi gardner in an elegant dress walks over and drapes herself over him. then longfellow says he has two charms, and snaps for “Wet Weht and Xenia.” quinta brunson and ego nwodim turn from the bar, both in neon-colored dresses, and start chewing out longfellow for snapping at them, and rant about how he slid into their dms, and complain that they thought he was bringing them to a monica concert, but he fires back that he clearly said monaco. brunson and nwodim also remark on longfellow’s cards, like telling jaj that “he only has a 2 and an 8, i don’t know why he’s going all in;” then when longfellow coolly reveals two aces, they go “he cheated! you’re not gonna cheat on us, are you?” longfellow turns and protests “we’re not even dating!” and brunson goes “we’re not dating? then what did you call it when i had my foot down your throat last night? you asked us to put your silencer in your ass!” the sketch ends with a 007-bullet chamber-style close-up shot of longfellow holding the silencer up and wiggling his eyebrows. this one went fine audience reception-wise; i really thought it’d make it to air.
WEEKEND UPDATE APPEARANCE: CHLOE FINEMAN AS GWYNETH PALTROW & HEIDI GARDNER AS THE LAWYER
i couldn’t really tell you anything specific about this, i’m sorry, i really didn’t like it and thought it would make it to air so i wasn’t paying much attention. i’m not even sure there was a point to this appearance besides letting you know there was a trial and gwyneth paltrow was in it? eventually the joke was that the lawyer was starstruck by paltrow and did not care about her own client and kept roleplaying them getting together, like making two barbie dolls that represented them kiss. low audience reception.

  1. this is a small thing, but jaj didn’t have his red tie in the cold open—i remember thinking he looked weirdly diminished and i didn’t realize the tie was the missing element
  2. in general the cold open speeds through the beginning a lot faster; instead of the miley line, jaj goes “we beat taylor, we beat miley, frankly, we beat sza”
