2024.05.19 11:13 Sharp_Summer_2594 Asking for the best advice I need desperately
My mother has been loaning money to family relatives for years. And I need to ask them to pay my mom back for the money which is 42,500 philippine pesos or $734 usd because we need it for her medical bills. As much as I want to settle this in court, we have nothing to show that would legally prove that they owe this amount of money. My mother lend my cousinâs friends money for school and have been paying through my âauntâ (relative of my dadâs side) and she never gave it to my mom. She also asked for more money and have never paid it in full and years have passed. I am so angry because her ex-husband gave her 50,000 pesos which is enough to pay my mother back but she instead used it to pay for her vacation. Additionally. My family helped her kids pay for their school and this is how theyâre going to treat my mother who had done nothing but help people in need. If things go south and she does not want to pay it back, I am going to demand her kids who all have adult jobs and are living overseas to pay their motherâs debt. I am desperate as my mother has cancer and I need that money to pay for the bills. I need the best way to ask her to pay. I can only do it through text but Iâm not sure how to say it. Please help.

2024.05.19 09:45 Barumamook $LUMN might be worth looking into
Whatâs up everyone, I know GME is the big stock here, but I also know everyone here buys for the long haul, may I present to you Lumen aka centurylink.
Right now their SI sits at about 14%, they have 1 billion shares on the market, so the HFs are sitting on about 140 million shorts.
Since lumen is at $1.32, thatâs about $183 million short.
Two things about this stock, Lumen used to be worth $11-20 pre 2022, however, due to their failure to modernize their networks, poor management, and market pressures, it has fallen greatly. Note this was not due to stock splits (citation 1)
That was the case, as of 2024 Lumen has entered into a new TSA (citation 2), what does this new transaction support agreement mean? Well lumen owe a lot of money, and it was all due very soon, what the TSA does is restructure that debt to keep the company from going bankrupt, it requires a plan of action and company transformation to be approved by its creditors.
What does that mean? It means that Lumenâs creditors believe the companyâs plan to become profitable is sound, it means that the stock price will go up, potentially exponentially. So much so that the company which was on the edge of bankruptcy announced 2+ billion in investment and credit in order to begin their business revamp.
Following this Lumen announced that they are planning for 500,000+ new fiber addresses this year. Fiber to the home is specifically a very profitable sector due to the lost cost of materials and devices, and the fact that that lumen has its own in house construction and deployment teams, with construction and deployment being some of the highest cost pieces of deploying fiber to the home networks.
All this said, Lumen is both set for a small but significant short squeeze and meteoric rise in stock prices if the right market conditions are met.

2024.05.19 09:36 Karolryba007 College is billing my parents for my brothers remote tuition
Hi, (UK, London)
Just thought I'd ask on here as I'm not quite sure where else to get support.
A (London based) private college is asking for ~ÂŁ12k of unpaid tuition fees for my brothers A level education. Circumstances have changed drastically for us recently as my dad is quite ill and out of work whereas my mothers situation has changed too and is now trying to get off of benefits.
On a side note - this was at the start of covid and more then 70% of my brothers F2F tuition transitioned into online. The quality of online tuition back then was also quite sub-par as it was quite a transition for everyone. He really struggled connecting with the 'remote learning' (and also mentioned a lot of classes were cancelled). He failed his year as a result.
I realise the college fulfilled their duty to give an education to the best of their abilities, but can the college legally demand full tuition fees in light of the above?
What would be the best way to resolve this situation? My parents have received some letters from solicitors and I think some form of court proceedings is getting involved.
I should also mention that my mum contacted the solicitors multiple times before courts got involved, but they never ended up getting back to her.
Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
P.s from what I know, there was a daily fee that was being added to the debt that my parents were not made aware of at all. I think what they had left to pay originally was ÂŁ8,000. Thanks!

2024.05.19 09:05 Alteredchaos đ˘ Sunday News - with a focus on carers this week
Ministers apologise and return ÂŁ7,000 in benefits to woman, 93, with dementia Government ministers have formally apologised and repaid ÂŁ7,000 to a 93-year-old woman whom they held responsible for running up benefits overpayment debts even though they were told she had dementia and was unable to manage her affairs.
The case, which the minister for disability, Mims Davies, admitted was âdisturbingâ, was brought to light by the Guardian as part of its investigation into carer's allowance overpayments.
The agreement to write off
the debt of the 93-year-old, whom the Guardian has chosen not to name, comes as ministers have promised to try new ways of sharing information with carers to try to prevent them building up months and years of overpayments.

DWP confirmed that it is developing an âenhanced notification strategyâ to alert carerâs allowance claimants to possible overpayments Notifications designed to encourage claimants to report changes in income and so reduce the risk of being overpaid.
As part of its policy paper
, Fighting Fraud in the Welfare System: Going Further, that was published earlier this week, the Department says (at paragraph 78) -
'In carerâs allowance we are progressing an enhanced notification strategy as part of our existing commitment to improve customer engagement, building on our existing communications with customers. As part of this notification strategy we are considering all forms of targeted contact to find the most effective and efficient solution, such as exploring the use of targeted text messages or emails to alert claimants and encourage them to contact the Department when the DWP is made aware of a potential overpayment.'
The Department added -
'The new strategy will help claimants understand when they may have received an earnings-related overpayment or are at risk of doing so, and will encourage claimants to contact the DWP to meet their obligation to inform the Department of changes in their income and other relevant circumstances. This will reduce the risk of those customers being overpaid.'
Note: having
expressed concern that the DWP had 'done nothing' to stop carers building up huge overpayments of benefit despite knowing what people are earning, Work and Pensions Committee Chair Stephen Timms
called on the National Audit Office to investigate problems with the carer's allowance system and, in particular, its failure to prevent or rectify overpayments.
Stephen Timms
has also written to Secretary for State for Work and Pensions Mel Stride highlighting concerns about the DWP's lack of progress with overpayments since the
previous committee's report in 2019. Mr Timms' letter repeats the committee's recommendation that the DWP increase the rate of carer's allowance and goes on to call for the DWP to review both the amount and the cliff-edge nature of the earnings limit and for the removal of the 21-hour study rule.
For more information, see
Policy paper: Fighting Fraud in the Welfare System: Going Further from gov.uk
Carers UK has welcomed the DWP's plans, noting this is the 'minimum' they've been calling for to tackle carers' overpayments. However, Director of Policy and Public Affairs Emily Holzhausen also highlights that implementing the strategy is 'urgent', asks that the whole issue be moved out of being branded benefits fraud, and that carer's allowance be reviewed as it should be 'modernised to reflect the realities of caring'.
DWP-commissioned research highlights how the carerâs allowance earnings threshold influences decisions about how many hours carers work Report also makes clear that the Department was made aware three years ago that there was room to improve claimant understanding and possibly reduce mistakes leading to overpayments by improving its communications.
The research,
Experiences of claiming and receiving carerâs allowance, explores how and why people claim carer's allowance; their caring roles; experiences of combining paid work and care; and how well claimants understand the rules associated with the benefit. While carried out in 2020/2021, the research has been published today against a backdrop of calls for the
wholescale reform of carer's allowance as a result of evidence that claimants who have earned above the carer's allowance earnings limit have been left with large overpayments and, in some cases, prosecuted for fraud.
While the research found that many claimants in employment felt there was a practical limit to the hours they could work, with many saying it was only feasible to be working part-time due to their caring responsibilities, it also found that -
- the earnings threshold appeared to influence decisions about how many hours some people worked. Even though claimants often denied that the threshold influenced their choices, they acknowledged being mindful to stay below the threshold. One claimant felt he had to refuse shifts at work that would take him over the threshold;
- in another example, the earnings limit led a claimant to reduce her hours as her wages increased, and eventually she was working so few hours that her employer felt it was not worth employing her due to her limited availability; and
- some claimants in paid work felt they might work more hours if not for the earnings threshold, and even suggested tapering the carerâs allowance earnings rule to encourage claimants to work more.
Published on the same day that the Work and Pensions Select Committee said that there has been
insufficient progress in addressing the problems with carer's allowance that it
highlighted five years ago, the research makes clear that the Department has been aware of the issues for some time. For example, it highlights confusion relating to the complexity of the earnings calculation, including how deductions such as childcare expenses and pension contributions are taken account of, and whether wages can be averaged if you earn more in a particular week.
In addition, with the Chair of the Select Committee Stephen Timms having said recently that the
DWP has done nothing to stop carers building up huge overpayments despite knowing what people are earning, and the Committee having called on the National Audit Office to investigate the problems with the system, the research found that -
- poor communication on the part of the DWP meant that not all of those that had been overpaid benefit were clear on the reason for the overpayment;
- some said that while they were initially notified or questioned about an overpayment there was then no follow-up from the Department; and
- when the overpayment was initially raised, several claimants felt that they were spoken to or treated by DWP as though they had intentionally committed fraud when the overpayment had been a misunderstanding.
As a result, the research says -
'... there is room to improve claimant understanding and possibly reduce mistakes leading to overpayments by improving communications around eligibility criteria. Since claimants did not engage with the detail of their benefit regularly, possibly only considering it once a year when they received their annual letter, more frequent communications may improve clarity of knowledge around carerâs allowance.'
Other key findings include that -
- most claimants cared for close relatives, with two in five caring for a child (39 per cent), a quarter caring for a spouse or partner (25 per cent), and one in five (22 per cent) caring for a parent;
- caring was a long-term and high-intensity commitment, with half of claimants (52 per cent) spending 65 or more hours caring per week and more than half (54 per cent) caring for between 5 and 20 years;
- only 16 per cent of carer's allowance claimants were currently in paid work, tending to work part- time in lower paid jobs that they were able to fit around their caring responsibilities, with most (81 per cent) working 20 hours or less a week;
- of those not currently in paid work, seven in ten (69 per cent) said this was due to their responsibilities as a carer, with other barriers including a lack of flexible working options, claimantsâ own health and confidence issues; and
- there was a lag between starting caring and claiming carer's allowance, with seven in ten claimants (70 per cent) caring for 5+ years, but only 3 in 10 (34 per cent) having claimed carer's allowance for that length of time.

Almost 135,000 people currently have an outstanding carer's allowance debt, with more than ÂŁ250 million owed in total, according to figures supplied by DWP Minister Paul Maynard DWP Minister also confirms that women represent 68 per cent of those with an outstanding debt.
Responding to a written question in Parliament from Work and Pensions Committee Chair Stephen Timms, Mr Maynard said -
'As of 14 May 2024, the volume of people who have an outstanding carers allowance debt is 134,800 with a total value of ÂŁ251 million. This figure represents the total stock and as such the total monetary amount may have been accrued over multiple years. Those who have an outstanding carers allowance debt may no longer be in receipt of the benefit.'
Mr Maynard added that -
'Women make up the majority of carerâs allowance claims, and this is reflected in the proportion of those with an outstanding carerâs allowance debt. As of 14 May 2024, there were 42,800 (32 per cent) males, 91,900 (68 per cent) females and 100 (less than 1 per cent) not identified, with an outstanding carer's allowance debt.'
The Minister also confirmed that, as of November 2023, there were more than 991,000 people in receipt of carer's allowance, consisting of around 271,000 (27 per cent) males and 720,000 (73 per cent) females.
Mr Maynard's written answer is available from parliament.uk
Total value of benefit overpayments in 2023/2024 increased to almost ÂŁ10 billion, representing 3.7 per cent of benefit expenditure for the year New DWP figures also show that official error underpayments remained at around ÂŁ1 billion, and that people could have claimed more than ÂŁ3 billion more 'if they had provided accurate information about their circumstances'.
In
Fraud and error in the benefit system: financial year 2023 to 2024 estimates, the DWP calculates how much money it overpaid or underpaid as a percentage of total benefit expenditure for the year (ÂŁ266.2bn) - for benefits including universal credit, housing benefit, personal independence payment, employment and support allowance and pension credit - and how many claims were paid an incorrect amount.
Note: the statistics no longer include estimates of claimant error underpayments as these are now published separately, as
confirmed in recent DWP guidance.
In relation to incorrect payment rates across all benefits for the financial year ending (FYE) 2024, the figures show that the total rate of benefit expenditure overpaid was 3.7 per cent (ÂŁ9.7bn), compared with 3.6 per cent (ÂŁ8.3bn) in 2022/2023. In addition, the total rate of benefit expenditure underpaid was 0.4 per cent (ÂŁ1.1bn), compared with 0.5 per cent (ÂŁ1.2bn) in FYE 2023.
Looking in more detail at the figures for individual benefits, the statistics include data showing that -
- for universal credit, expenditure increased to ÂŁ51.9bn in 2024 with an overpayment rate of 12.4 per cent (ÂŁ6.5bn) and underpayment rate of 0.3 per cent (ÂŁ180m), compared to expenditure of ÂŁ43.4 bn, overpayments at 12.7 per cent (ÂŁ5.5bn) and underpayments at 0.6 per cent (ÂŁ240m) in FYE 2023;
- for personal independence payment (PIP), the overpayment rate was at the lowest recorded level of 0.4 per cent (ÂŁ90m), compared with 1.1 per cent (ÂŁ200m) in FYE 2023. However, the underpayment rate went up to 0.4 per cent (ÂŁ80m), from 0.3 per cent (ÂŁ60m) the previous year;
- for pension credit, the overpayment rate was 9.7 per cent (ÂŁ520m) in FYE 2024, compared with 6.8 per cent (ÂŁ330m) in the previous year, with underpayments remaining unchanged at 0.3 per cent (ÂŁ50m) for both years; and
- for housing benefit, almost ÂŁ1bn (ÂŁ980m) was overpaid in FYE 2024 (6.3 per cent of expenditure), compared with ÂŁ860m (5.7 per cent) in 2023. Underpayments remained stable at 0.4 per cent of spending (ÂŁ50m in FYE 2024 and ÂŁ60m in FYE 2023).
In addition to the fraud and error statistics, the DWP has also issued
Unfulfilled eligibility in the benefit system: Financial Year Ending (FYE) 2024, in line with its decision to remove claimant underpayments from its main fraud and error estimates. The new statistics set out the percentage of benefit expenditure that could have been paid to people with unfulfilled eligibility 'if they had provided the correct information', and show key findings that include -
- the unfulfilled eligibility rate for 2024 is 1.2 per cent of expenditure (ÂŁ3.1bn), compared with 1.0 per cent (ÂŁ2.3bn) in the previous year; and
- universal credit, PIP and disability living allowance (DLA) account for around three-quarters of the total value of unfulfilled eligibility (at ÂŁ730m, ÂŁ870m and ÂŁ750m respectively in FYE 2024).
The DWP highlighted that -
'PIP has the second highest unfulfilled eligibility rate [4 per cent] of all benefits and fairly high expenditure [ÂŁ21.6bn], so due to this combination, PIP accounts for around one-quarter of total unfulfilled eligibility in FYE 2024. DLA has the highest unfulfilled eligibility rate [11.1 per cent] but relatively low expenditure [ÂŁ6.8m], so even though its rate is higher than PIP, it accounts for a similar amount of total unfulfilled eligibility in FYE 2024. Universal credit has a lower unfulfilled eligibility rate than DLA and PIP [1.4 per cent] but its high expenditure means that it also accounts for a similar amount of total unfulfilled eligibility in FYE 2024.'

Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride has set out the DWP's plans to scale up its 'fight against fraudsters' New measures include using machine learning to detect and prevent fraudulent claims, as well as introducing a new Bill to enable benefit fraud to be treated like tax fraud.
Issuing a
written statement in the House of Commons on 13th May, Mr Stride said -
'In the continued fight against fraud, today the Government will publish a new paper setting out the progress we have made in tackling fraud and error in the welfare system - Fighting Fraud in the Welfare System: Going Further. The paper sets out the progress we have made in delivering the commitments in the Government's 2022 command paper Fighting Fraud in the Welfare System and it demonstrates where we are going further to protect taxpayersâ money from fraudsters.'
Highlighting that the
Data Protection and Digital Information Bill, currently before Parliament, will enable the Department to
work with third parties such as banks to identify claims that signal potential fraud and error, Mr Stride says that the new measures being introduced include -
- bringing forward a new Fraud Bill in the next parliament to treat benefit fraud like tax fraud, by providing for the ability to make arrests and conduct searches and seizures by warrant;
- exploring a new civil penalty to punish fraudsters, potentially broadening the scope of cases that can receive a penalty when the courts are not prosecuting, and increasing the value of the civil penalty;
- tripling the size of the Targeted Case Review programme to reach almost 6,000 staff with the aim of saving ÂŁ6.6 billion by 2027/2028; and
- making changes to universal credit including new partly automated checks on self-employed income, new online prompts for claimants to re-declare their circumstances (such as if they have moved in with a partner), and increasing checks on capital when people claim the benefit to ensure they are eligible.
Note: the Department confirms that final decisions on accepting or stopping a claim will, however, continue to be made by a member of DWP staff.

Less than half of legacy benefit claimants who were sent a migration notice between July 2022 and March 2024 have made a claim for universal credit, according to new figures from the DWP However, new DWP statistics also show that 60 per cent of households that claimed universal credit have been awarded transitional protection.
In
Completing the move to Universal Credit: statistics related to the move of households claiming Tax Credits and DWP benefits to Universal Credit: data to end of March 2024, the DWP sets out figures for the period since July 2022, noting that -
'In the period covered by this bulletin, the vast majority of migration notices have been sent to tax credit households whose likelihood of claiming universal credit and receiving transitional protection may be different from DWP legacy benefit claimants, the majority of whom had not yet been sent a migration notice in the period covered in this bulletin.'
The statistics include that -
- a total of 824,050 individuals (in 540,070 households) were sent migration notices up to March 2024 - up by around 300,000 and 200,000 respectively compared to the totals for December 2023;
- a total of 400,940 individuals (49 per cent of those sent migration notices), living in 275,980 households, have made a claim for universal credit;
- of households that have claimed universal credit, 166,860 (60 per cent) have been awarded transitional protection;
- a total of 238,990 individuals who were sent migration notices are still going through the managed migration process; and
- a total of 184,120 individuals who were sent migration notices have had their legacy benefit claims closed.
Move to Universal Credit statistics, July 2022 to March 2024 is available from gov.uk
Note: the DWP has also published
Universal Credit statistics, 29 April 2013 to 11 April 2024Â which show that there were 6.7 million people on universal credit in April 2024 (300,000 more than the 6.4 million in January 2024) and that half of households on universal credit that received a payment in February 2024 included children.
Department for Communities also confirms that claimants in receipt of other legacy benefits will be issued with migration notices 'in the coming months' The Department for Communities (DfC) has confirmed that the 'Move to UC' rollout in Northern Ireland has expanded this week to include people receiving tax credits along with housing benefit.
Announcing the expansion of the process, Deputy Secretary of Work and Health at the DfC Paddy Rooney said -
'We continue to take a measured and carefully managed approach to migrating legacy benefit recipients to universal credit. We have already successfully completed issuing migration notices to tax credit only recipients and we will continue to take every step possible to ensure that everyone receives the help and support they need during this next phase of Move to UC.'
The Department also confirmed that once it has issued migration notices to all those receiving tax credits with housing benefit, the following groups will be contacted in this order -
- people claiming income support;
- people claiming housing benefit only, and those claiming child tax credit with income-related employment and support allowance (ESA); and
- people claiming income-based jobseeker's allowance.
In relation to the bringing forward of managed migration for ESA and ESA/housing benefit claimants in Great Britain,
announced by the Prime Minister on 19 April 2024, the DfC says that it is working to assess the impact of this on the region. It also confirms that it will align with the DWP's aim to complete the migration of legacy benefit claimants to universal credit by March 2025.

57,000 adverse universal credit sanction decisions were made in January 2024, according to new DWP statistics DWP statistics also highlight that around 95 per cent of decisions are as a result of failure to attend or participate in a mandatory interview.
In
Benefit sanctions statistics to February 2024, the DWP reports on both the rate and duration of sanctions for universal credit claimants who are in conditionality regimes where they be applied.
Key findings include that -
- in February 2024, 30.1 per cent of claimants were in conditionality regimes that were subject to sanctions and, of these, 6.52 per cent were sanctioned - down 0.64 percentage points from the previous quarter;
- over the last year, 94.9 per cent of adverse sanction decisions were for failure to attend or participate in a mandatory interview; and
- in February 2024, there were 20,000 completed sanctions in the 4 weeks to 13 weeks sanction duration band, 4,800 in the over 13 weeks to 26 weeks duration band, and 4,000 of over 26 weeks duration.
In addition, while the total number of claimants in conditionality regimes where sanctions can be applied has remained largely stable since May 2022 (currently at 1.95 million), the total number of adverse sanction decisions stood at 57,000 in January 2024, the highest since March 2022.
The DWP notes that -
'Comparisons with universal credit prior to February 2024 ... should not be made. This is because the data sources, methodology and rules of the benefits differ from those used for universal credit currently.'
However, it adds that, following the reinstated duration measures and rate methodology improvements, the data is now determined stable and fit for purpose and, as of May 2024, it is published under the 'Official Statistics' label as opposed to 'in development'.

DWP has admitted missing multiple opportunities to record the 'vulnerability' of a disabled woman whose death was later linked by a coroner to failings at the heart of its UC system The Disability News Service reported on the case of Nazerine (known as Naz) Anderson, from Melton Mowbray, who died of an overdose in June last year, after receiving a UC review notice.
According to
a prevention of future deaths (PFD) report sent to the department by coroner Fiona Butler, the DWP missed six opportunities to record Andersonâs âvulnerabilityâ on its IT system while it was reviewing her universal credit claim, and had failed to act on the mental distress she showed in phone calls about her claim. It also repeatedly failed to act on requests to direct its telephone calls and letters to her daughter.

Number of emergency food parcels distributed across the UK by the Trussell Trust has increased by 90 per cent over the past five years Food charity reports that it distributed more than three million parcels last year, with more than a million of them going to children.
In
Emergency food parcel distribution in the UK: April 2023 - March 2024, the Trust says that it distributed 3,121,404 food parcels, the most parcels that it has ever distributed in a financial year, representing a four per cent increase on
last year's record-breaking numbers for 2022/2023 and a 94 per cent increase since 2018/2019.
The charity also highlights that the number of parcels provided to children has continued to rise, exceeding 1.1 million in 2023/2024, and that food bank support is provided disproportionately to children, compared to the proportion of children in the UK population. In addition, it notes that pension age households are increasingly likely to need to use a food bank, with food bank support for these households having more than quadrupled between 2018/2019 and 2023/2024 (an increase of 345 per cent), compared to an 81 per cent rise amongst households without someone of pension age.
Also sharing statistics on the reason for referral for an emergency food parcel - which include health, benefit issues, work hour changes, insecure housing, changes in personal circumstances, immigration status and domestic abuse, as well as income and debt levels - the Trussell Trust says -
'Across all households the most common reason for referral was due to issues with income and debt levels. The vital role of the social security system in driving these trends is clear from the fact that the majority (78 per cent) of people referred to food banks were reported to solely have income from the social security system, with a further 8 per cent having earned income as well as income from social security.'
Trussell Trust Chief Executive Emma Revie said -
'Itâs 2024 and weâre facing historically high levels of food bank need. As a society, we cannot allow this to continue. We must not let food banks become the new norm ... A supportive social security system is the bedrock on which we end hunger for good. Building on this, we need much more effective employment and financial support for parents, carers and disabled people, and action to ensure everyone can have the security we all need to access opportunities and have hope for the future, through more secure and flexible jobs and investment in social housing. Food banks are not the answer. They will be there to support people as long as they are needed, but our political leaders must take bold action to build a future where everyone has enough money to afford the lifeâs essentials. The time to act is now.'

Employment Minister Jo Churchill has provided a House of Lords Select Committee with an undertaking that the administrative earnings threshold (AET) in universal credit will not be increased again without a 'sound evidence base' However, Minister's evidence to Lords Committee fails to address its dissatisfaction with DWP's explanation for not publishing robust evidence to support previous increases in the threshold.
Further to the Lords Secondary Legislation Scrutiny Committee's
report on new regulations that implemented a further increase in the AET from 13 May 2024 - that criticised the âinexplicableâ lack of data evaluating previous increases in the threshold in
September 2022 and
January 2023 - the Committee held a one-off evidence session yesterday to question the Minister and DWP officials.
Introducing the session, Committee Chair Lord Hunt acknowledged that the DWP had agreed to share its informal findings supporting its AET policy. However Lord Hunt added that -
'... similar, no doubt to the material that the Social Security Advisory Committee saw but correctly declined, if information is not available to the House and the public, then we feel unable to consider it either.'
The Committee then questioned the Minister about the Department's failure to publish evidence providing an assessment of the impact of increasing the AET either before or after implementing the change.
In response, Ms Churchill highlighted that the Department did publish a
randomised controlled trial evaluation in 2018 providing the highest level of evidence on the impacts of increased in-work conditionality that Ministers have had sight of. When challenged that this evidence is somewhat outdated and 'a bit threadbare' - as it has been relied on for three increases in the AET - Ms Churchill indicated that Ministers also had early sight of unpublished research (a Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD) study) that compares the experiences of claimants who are just below and just above the AET.
When pressed on the expected publication dates for this and further evidence, Mr Churchill said -
'I have asked for [the RDD study] to be available as soon as it can be, and the date I was given was spring 2024 ... I would like it out the door as soon as possible, so you have more data ... RDD is the next piece, the next building block and then, the longitudinal study will come through in 2025.'
Concluding the session with a final question, Lord Hunt, speaking on behalf of the whole Committee, said -
'... we're looking for an undertaking from you, not to further expand the cohort until the Department can publish robust evidence of its effects. Are you able to give us that undertaking?
Ms Churchill responded -
'So are you alluding to us holding 15 hours or with this latest laying at 18? Because I could certainly say to you, I think with all confidence that at 18, we want to understand the iterations and make sure that we've got a sound evidence base from there.'
NB - the increase in the AET in January 2023 was based, for individuals, on the equivalent of them working 15 hours per week at the National Living Wage, and this week's increase to the equivalent of them working 18 hours per week.
Despite welcoming the Minister's reply, Lord Hunt went on to say -
'... we accept your undertaking, except we are still as dissatisfied as we were because you haven't provided, in the view of the Committee, sufficient explanation yet. We are awaiting this robust evidence, which I think that we now expect in June 2024.'
The evidence session
Regulations to increase the Administrative Earnings Threshold (Legislative scrutiny) is available from parliament.tv
Work and Pensions Select Committee has called on the government to bring forward proposals to compensate women born in the 1950s who suffered as a result of the DWP's communication failures when their pension age was increased, and asks that it does so in the current parliamentary session Committee chair highlights lengthy delay and urgency for affected women and calls on government to act on Parliamentary Ombudsman recommendations before summer recess.
Writing to Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Mel Stride, Committee Chair Stephen Timms requests government support for 'urgent action' following the
Parliamentary Ombudsman's final report in March 2024 which recommended a remedy based on level 4 of its severity of injustice scale, putting awards at between ÂŁ1,000 and ÂŁ2,950.
Mr Timms says that the Committee does not seek to question the Ombudsman's proposal for compensation at level 4, but instead has focused on what a remedy may look like -
'The evidence we received indicated support for a rules-based system. This would be a system where payments would be adjusted within a range (based on the PHSOâs severity of injustice scale) to reflect the extent of change in the individualâs State Pension age and the notice of the change which the individual received. This would mean that the less notice you had of the change and the bigger the change in your SPA, the higher the payment you would receive. While not perfect, the advantages of such a system are that it would be: quick to administer; applying known data to a formula to determine the amount due; and relatively inexpensive (compared to a more bespoke system).'
The Committee's recommendation also includes some flexibility for individuals to make the case for further compensation in the event that they have experienced direct financial loss, for example where a woman whose divorce settlement was less than it would have been because it was based on the expectation that she would receive her state pension at 60.
Mr Timms also asks the government to consider -
'... the need for urgent action, given that the Ombudsman started to look at this issue in 2018 and that every 13 minutes a woman born in the 1950s dies ... Implementing a remedy will need parliamentary time, financial resources, and the data and technical systems only available to your department. It cannot happen without government support. We would ask you to bring forward proposals for a remedy by the summer recess.'

2024.05.19 06:46 ByMyDecree Reviewing and Ranking Every Battle: Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton
Tier List:
https://imgur.com/a/SPm0Fjl This one hits different. Right from the start, with those ominous vocals giving the whole thing a feeling of foreboding and momentousness. Donald Trump lurking around the stage for his titlecard, even staying onscreen as his titlecard goes away is hilarious and a great visual touch. Then we get Hillary sitting in her debate chair; this battle committing so hard to a location both rappers are present in is pretty unique.
"I've been in this game too long; I'm a public servant! Have been since I met MLK in person!" Serviceable opening on paper, but the guest actor, Kimmy Gatewood, makes it stick out with her performance. Love the intensity of her voice and facial expressions. "I'm a woman of the people; that's for certain. You're a man of the people who don't like turbans!" This is a great line, very accurate, and I love the look on Hillary's face. "I was living in the West Wing while you were professional wrestling. Got skin like Russian dressing from too much Russian investing!" Good lines, in particular I really dig the Russian dressing/Russian investing parallel. Also, while I don't think Kimmy bears a super strong resemblance to Hillary Clinton(the guest actress from Clinton v. Henry VIII was much more on-point) she does look a lot like her as she does the Russian dance in the background. Something about her wide-open smile. "You been going bankrupt since the 90s; if I was in Iran you couldn't find me." Very true on both counts, very solid line. I don't know what more there is to say. Is it gonna be controversial to acknowledge the reality that Trump's gone bankrupt lots of times and probably couldn't point to Iran on a map, even now that he's been president? "You don't care about the job, Trump, you just think the desk is shiny." I think it's accurate that Trump really only cares about the prestige, but this still seems like a pretty weak attack. Hell, you could argue the vast majority of presidential candidates care more about the prestige than actually doing anything. "I said that I respect your children but that wasn't quite right, yo! Looking like some extras on American Psycho!" This line is pretty fucking great. I didn't get it when this battle first released, but I've seen American Psycho more recently, and comparing the Trump kids to the useless trust fund posers surrounding Patrick Bateman is hilarious. The hyper-aggressive hip thrusting Hillary's doing is also a great visual. For the most part this portrayal doesn't resemble Hillary much, but I think there's some truth in how she's portrayed as being very try-hard here. "First name is Hillary, middle name Rodham, last name is Clinton, and lyrics I got 'em! You fire celebrities on The Apprentice, motha fucka I fire Bin Laden! (Crack!)
cough" Being tryhard again. The lines are pretty good, the flow is pretty good. The reference to her coughing is a fun touch. "How do I say this? You're racist! Ooh, you must get so pissed that your hands are too small to stop and frisk!" The asking/answering of that question at the beginning is really funny, and I like the way they worked Trump's small hands into this attack on him for being racist. "So you use your fingers to touch chicks. (She's only 12 years old.) That's enough, shit! (But she's married, sir.) Just gotta get pushy. (That's your daughter.) Well, grab her by the pussy!" One of the highlights of the battle, love the way they worked in the secret service agent here. Pointing out Trump being a creep at child beauty pageants and towards Ivanka are great lines of attack. "That's assault, brotha! Don't tell me the victim's at fault, sucka! You don't know shit about steaks! Yucka! But the ones on the 8th are great! Motha fucka!" Really fun delivery, good attacks, I like that they threw the Trump Steaks jab in between the more serious sentiments. I don't know what the fuck is going on with the background in this section, though they're really going hard on the tryhardness of Hillary. "Better save the date; I'm gonna rock the vote! Bad bitch on the scene like Murder, She Wrote!" Hillary trying to compare herself to that character is pretty cringe, as is highlighted by her attempting to dab with the biggest "look, aren't I cool, kids?!" look on her face. Real "Pokemon Go to the polls" moment. "So go ahead, Donald, let me see you flow. I brought Michelle's speech; borrow some quotes!" It's a pretty great line, though this line is moreso an attack at Melania than Trump himself; she should have ended with a more Trump-focused attack.
"Let me just say I respect all females. But your rhymes are trash; put 'em next to your emails." The first line is funny in how flagrantly untrue it is, the second line is just plain funny. Good opener. "Our country's in crisis. Who wants to vote for the mother of ISIS? That might not be exactly true, but I don't do politeness." Trump talks out of his ass and lies a lot, yes. "(Believe me!) You wanna talk about misogyny? Your Bill's worse than Cosby! He left a mess on that dress like you left in Benghazi!" The comparison of the rapist Bills is a great line, and I'm not sure whether the whole Benghazi thing was actually something that was Hillary's fault or just a Fox News talking head talking point, but it's a good line regardless. Also by this point it's clear that Lloid's Trump impression is on-point, much better than Peter's. "(Terrible!) You wanna break the glass ceiling, Hillary, I sense it. But the only crack you'll find is my ass pressed against it." The gesturing Lloid is doing during the "I sense it" line is fucking hilarious. The second line is also pretty funny, and did turn out to be true. "The numbers are in and I'm right on your tail. You don't have the stamina, baby, you're frail! This will be just like '08 when you fail! But Trump will appoint you to jail!" Fun parallel to Hillary's "First name is Hillary" segment from before going on here. The lines themselves are fine, nothing amazing. The second-to-last one turned out to be true, the last one did not. "How do I say this? You're a 2. And you almost lost the primary to a socialist Jew!" It's pretty funny how Trump mimics Hillary's "How do I say this?" bit, and "you're a 2" is such a simple but funny jab. He's got a point that Hillary was so weak a candidate that Bernie Sanders came outta nowhere and was able to put up a serious competition in a race that was supposed to have no real competition for her. "What do the American people gotta yankee doodle doo, to get it through your fat face, that they're just not that into you?!" The use of 'yankee doodle doo' is funny and he's got a real point that Hillary needs to accept she's very unpopular, though that 'fat face' line is such a pot calling the kettle black moment. No doubt intended as such. "They want a strong male leader who can stand up to China! Not a crooked, little, wishy-washy bleeding heart vagina!" These lines, of course, exist purely to point out that Trump is a giant sexist. The "China, China, China... bloody vagina!" in the background is a very funny touch. Little bits like that just add so much to this battle. "I'm gonna run these streets like I run my casinos; more police and less Latinos!" These lines, of course, exist purely to point out that Trump is a giant racist. "While you bury us in debt buying poor people socks, I'll create jobs, tearing down mosques!" Trump is against programs that help the impoverished and hates Muslims. "Then I'll use all the best rocks from the site to build a wall, dip it in gold and make Mexico pay for it all!" The thing Lloid does with his eyes as he smiles when he says "build a wall" is just... SO Trumpian. This really is one of the greatest Trump impressions I've ever seen, Lloid did an amazing job. As for the line... Trump says he's gonna build a wall. He built a partial wall. A partial, really unimpressive wall. "I'll make this country great again! We'll all be living large! And I'll tell Congress you're fired, and put Charles in charge!" Trump's slogan is MAGA and Charles in Charge was a TV show whose main actor is a Trump supporter. Also apparently there was a Supreme Court judge named Charles Trump once wanted nominated. Alright. "'Cause this whole system's rigged! And we all know the riggers! For the last eight years this country's been run by- (CAW!)" The point of this line is that Trump is a giant racist. I like the touch that the crowd is cheering wildly for Trump while Hillary looks disturbed in the background.
Then Lincoln comes soaring in on an eagle, as he did in Obama v. Romney. "Are you fucking kidding me with this blah blah blah? I've half a mind to feed you both to my oversized - (CAW!)" The use of 'CAW!' as a censor is amusing. "I've heard more thoughtful discussion up in TMZ! You two got brother blocking brother on their Facebook feed!" This isn't fun anymore, it's just real. "I'm so sick and tired of this ridiculous shit! If this is the best my party gets, then my party should quit!" The Republican Party is a nightmare and Lincoln would be ashamed of it today, is what is being said. "I'm sorry, did I say something that you found funny? Wipe that creepy-ass smile off your face and beat this dummy!" Clinton is a shitty politician who didn't take Trump seriously enough, and she comes across as cold and inhuman. And in case you somehow failed to pick up on it before, ERB makes clear here their endorsement for which candidate to vote for. "And if she does win the White House, be a man and hold the door. Don't get your fans stirred up in some sorta Twitter civil war!" Too real, especially after January 6th. "Here's an equal opportunity smack down in the sequel! That's of the people, by the people, for the people, eagle!" Some people have debated whether Lincoln slapped Trump twice in place of slapping Clinton at all because he's a gentleman and wouldn't hit a woman, or because ERB favors Clinton over Trump. The latter is definitely true, but the former is also probably true. So... both! Then Lincoln yells "Eagle!" and fucks off.
Let's talk about bias. There's two camps of people I've seen in discussions about certain ERB battles, especially this one, and they both irk me. So let's address both of them.
First off: YES, ERB is biased against Trump. And are biased against Republicans generally, and much more sympathetic to the Democrats. They've made that completely obvious from the beginning. And you know what? That's totally fine! They're right to be biased against them! But for some reason, some people in the fanbase can't just admit that. For some reason, there's a lot of people in the fanbase who will bend over backwards trying to explain how it's actually totally unbiased(false) and they attack both sides equally(false) and people complaining are being salty(true). But if you think ERB is unbiased, then society has failed you, because you are a woeful media illiterate. They're screaming Vote for Hillary, Don't Let Trump Win! at you and somehow you haven't managed to decipher what they're saying. I hope for your sake you're, like, twelve years old if you actually think they're unbiased. Here's an important lesson for you to learn as you grow up: 'biased' does not equate to 'bad'! For example, you SHOULD be 'biased' against Hitler! If you look at someone like Hitler and compare him to someone like MLK and treat them as equally valid figures whose ideas are both worthy of consideration, then you're at best a useful idiot and at worst a Nazi apologist! Stop feeling like you have to defend ERB's honor by feverishly denying any claims of bias!
But even worse than those jokers are the fuckers who love to bitch about how ERB has gotten "too political" or "too woke" nowadays. NEWSFLASH, DUMBASS: the very FIRST battle was John Lennon vs Bill O'Reilly, and Bill O'Reilly literally says "Because I'm evil! Heart blacker than Don Cheadle!" Their very foundation as a series is shitting on Republicans! They didn't suddenly 'go woke' just because they stopped doing gay jokes and shat on Trump even more explicitly than they already did to Romney.
Anyway, I've got mixed feelings about this battle. The 'mixed' part of those feelings come from how
heavy it is; I have to be in a certain mood to want to listen to this, and most times I see this pop up in my playlist I just skip on to the next one. It's uncomfortable. It's real. Maybe a little
too real. But then again, maybe they were right to take it so seriously. It's still a great battle, even if it can be a little hard to come back to. The only
big issue I have with it is that Lincoln coming in at the end is kind of a drag. It was funny the first time; this doesn't recapture the magic. He doesn't really have any great lines either. I tend to stop listening by the time he comes in. But besides that, this battle has an amazing instrumental track, great visuals, peak performances from both Lloid and Kimmy, and good, sometimes great, writing.
I used to think Trump won this battle despite always having been anti-Trump. Revisiting it now, I'm not sure
why I thought that. Maybe it was because his part was just so entertaining, even moreso than Hillary's. Maybe it's because I, like many others, harbor a strong resentment and bitterness towards Hillary Clinton(muh Bernie) that would lead me to not be entirely honest about her performance here. Maybe it's just because that hardly anybody said Clinton won back in the day; Trump had either a majority or a clear plural majority of votes in polls, then Lincoln with a fair amount, then Clinton with a small fraction. Now I see that that is utter bullshit. The only reason anybody votes for Lincoln is either because of the Last Word Effect or because they want to be centrists about it and not side with either candidate; even if you could argue he was the best part of Obama v. Romney, here his verse falls well short of both Clinton and Trump's. On the question of Clinton v. Trump... I can
kind of see how someone might think Trump won on account of how hilarious he was, but a ton of his stuff just makes himself look bad, and if we're being honest I think Clinton had better burns and more substantive lines of attack. I say Clinton>Trump>Lincoln.

2024.05.19 06:41 albert1165 Only 5% of Vietnamese people know the truth about Vinfast ...
due to Vuong Pham's complete control of the Vietnamese media. He censored all the bad news so what appear to the clueless general Vietnamese public is a shinny VF3 and other Vinfast cars as if they are normal cars from a normal car company. Not.
Here are the list of things Vuong Pham censored in Vietnam i.e. no official media is reporting these newsworthy facts and truth:
1/ Vinfast is not a normal car company: it is a company teetering on the verge of bankruptcy with an astronomical debt, $9.3B total and $5.8B short term, huge yearly loss of $2.4B, negative $2.7B equity, only $123M cash, and only miminal real sale (about $450M in 2023) where 80% of total sale are stuffing to GSM.
2/ Vinfast cars are not normal. They are very buggy with 15 cases of VF8 with broken front wheels. With the low number of cars on the road, the rate is very high, highest among all car brands.
3/ Numerous battery dead problems.
4/ The news of the Pleasanton crash killing 4 people in a burning VF8.
5/ The real world's range of VF3 is only about 120-140km, where the fake range 210 is the unrealistic NEDC standard.
6/ The news of Vinfast did not pay rent to Stanford Mall for a year.
7/ The news of the two ongoing lawsuits: class action lawsuit and the steel lawsuit.
8/ Vuong Pham sold cars in Vietnam at a much higher price than in oversea market, despite only 3% special tax and no import tax for full cars (only minor tax for parts), effectively milking Vietnamese to subsidize oversea customers.
Vuong Pham is all out attack with a media blitz of the VF3 right now and is pumping the stock VFS / VIC / VHM full force, hoping that the Vietnamese public is still under his spell due to complete media control that no bad truth can reach the public. North Korean style. The tiny VF3 brouhaha is his last attempt, the swan song of Vuong Pham. News about new plant in Indonesia, expansion to Malaysia, the Phillipines etc... will continue to churn out to keep the media from being dried, but of course, with no substance because Vuong Pham does not have the money and the cars are not competitive anywhere else.
Well, many of these Vietnamese people are just clueless, not their fault but due to Vuong Pham's censorship, and the number of people who buy a Vinfast car will be much less if they know the truth, that Vinfast is a technically bankrupt company selling a buggy car.
Poor Vietnamese living in a communist country with propaganda and censorship.
Well, in this sub, we know the truth, a tiny population of only about 3900 people vs 100M Vietnamese + 400M American out there.
Good to know the truth.
Mean while, time will do their force when it is due: Vinfast will crumble under the weight of ever increasing debts and loss.
Just a matter of time.

2024.05.19 06:22 Transcendent_Raccoon 235 Days Sober
In an hour, I will be 235 days sober. I dontât Reddit a lot, and never make posts, but I felt like sharing this so maybe someone on the fence out there will decide to stop drinking before they end up like me. Everyone knows the consequences of drinking, but seldom ever do I see anyone talk about what living like that is, what the first year of recovery feels like, etc.
I am an alcoholic, and I can never drink again. My body does something with alcohol that no ânormalâ personâs does. I got hit with a genetic double whammy from two alcoholic grandfathers plus high risk of substance abuse from autism. Coupled with working in a professional industry where consuming alcohol is almost mandatory, ignorance, and a shitty upbring, I never really had a chance.
I never really got into any trouble for drinking. I didnât start fights, I didnât get arrested for a DUI/DWI, I didnât have wrecks, and I didnât miss work. I had a high-paying albeit incredibly harrowing job and a fiance, but I was losing my health and my mind. Lots of unresolved mental issues and an extremely high stress environment meant that over a period of 2-3 years, my drinking spiraled out of control and I denied it the entire time. I tried to quit drinking, I couldnât. I forced myself to dry out for 11 days regardless, and it was pure hell. Sweating, shaking, vomiting blood, psychosis, hallucinations, nausea, headache, diarrhea, extreme paranoia, brain fog, and fear. Pure terror, honestly. On the 12th day I drank, and I drank for another 3 months before I checked myself into rehab after losing everything.
My fiance left in a brutally cruel fashion along with her family, she took my dog, she stole cash, she had put me into some debt, etc. I had allowed my psychotic father back into my life previously and he picked this moment of desperation and abject hoplessness in my life to go full narcissist and ruin what little sanity I had left. I ended up drinking myself into psychosis, almost dying, almost committing suicide, and disappearing off the face of the planet before going to rehab. I didnât want to live anymore; rehab was nightmarish. I made the best of it, but it was soul crushing in every way imaginable.
I joined AA as soon as rehab was over, declared bankruptcy, and am now trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. I honestly should not be alive right now, and I honestly still donât want to be.
Drinking and what I went through because of it and other people has fundamentally changed me as a human being. I am a shell of myself. I deal with constant suicidal thoughts despite psychiatry (and a brain scan, blood test, X-ray, etc. no tumor), I have panic attacks for no reason, moments of intense terror for absolutely no reason, bouts of nihilistically staring at the wall for hours on end, no interest in anything, no desire to eat, inability to sleep, no social life outside of AA, and an outlook on life that is so fundamentally negative that I would not wish this on my worst enemy or any other human being no matter how heinous they are.
No one deserves to live this way, and this is the price I must pay for the last 5 years of my alcoholism. I force myself to work, I force myself to go to the gym, and I force myself to get out of bed and go to AA. Everything I do is a struggle with no meaning, motivation, or joy behind it. I am an automation, a wind-up toy soldier, and nothing more. My insides have been hollowed out, I canât imagine 30 more years of this, and I canât imagine ever fully recovering from this either.
Please, if you are on the fence, stop drinking. Donât become me. It is pure hell, and Iâm one of the lucky ones that didnât end up homeless or in prison or dead. Living like this every single day is almost as much of a nightmare as drinking every single day was. Donât do this to yourself.
Stop before itâs too late.

2024.05.19 05:13 JamesVirani Another rant - I usually assume the best, but it really smells fishy
Most of you know that I was always critical of Karen. Some of you attacked me for being misogynist at the time. The honest truth is that it had nothing to do with her being a woman. As a person who values education very highly, I could simply not understand how a BA became CEO of such a big company with zero prior CEO experience. But then, the response was interesting too. I started receiving private messages from random people, some fresh accounts, some regulars on this board, some claiming to know Karen, speaking very poorly of her and her past. I have no idea who these people were. I didn't respond to many of these PMs.
Call after call, decision after decision, it became worse. She surrounded herself with previous friends and co-workers. Got rid of tangible cash flow positive businesses (which by the way, could have very likely helped them secure the debt today, if they had them today, like those clinics could very likely be a collateral to a lender).
I was apprehensive about this stock since the day we had a sudden management change. From that moment, I wanted to sell and take my loss elsewhere. I started talking about WELL here. Any money I wanted to put in CloudMD, I redirected to WELL, and now have a decent position there. Why did I not sell DOC? My prior experiences with penny stocks told me that the market always overreacts significantly to news and there will be a healthy bounce back up somewhere. I was trying to outsmart the market and exit on a bounce. It was stupid. I learned a lesson. The flood of bad news never stopped. Something about releasing an investor presentation between two terrible earnings releases and slashing the revenue by an additional 10 million in your investor presentation didn't help. Like they were trying to sabotage it. Conference calls were awful. I won't repeat myself.
I was not really interested in being a mod here either. I particularly didn't want to be a mod after management changed, because I wanted to sell this at the first opportunity and get the hell out. Headwax asked me to be a second pair of eyes, and out of the curiosity of understanding what being a mod on a sub like this involves, I accepted. With HW's main gone, now I have become the sole mod.
Fast forward to the recent deal. I am seeing a flood of comments and reports on here from fresh accounts, and I can only imagine that these are company insiders or people very close to the management. Someone shared Karen's number publicly on this sub. An account with a questionable comment history immediately reported it as doxxing. I was late to see the report, so the number stayed up here for a while. In the meantime, this user keeps messaging me on how I am a useless mod (yes, thank you, I never wanted to be one) because I hadn't yet removed that comment containing Karen's alleged number, whereas I had previously removed comments calling "Headwax," Karen. I have no recollection of removing a comment that called Headwax, Karen, but this removed comment was by another user, so they very likely gave away a Reddit secondary account. Who is this random person reporting comments, and how do they so specifically point out a comment calling Headwax, Karen from the past?
Another user posted about how we can report the company to OSC yesterday. It was immediately met with crowd control (i.e. many people reported the post right away as being "harassment" and Reddit removed it automatically), whereas there was nothing harassing about the post whatsoever. It was sharing useful information. I allowed it, and most of you endorsed and welcomed it. So who are these people who are reporting these posts that allow us to legally look into this transaction? Clearly, they are being notified of everything that goes on here and are first to try to manipulate the moderation. What interests are they serving?
I am left to believe there are insiders lurking this sub. There are people who are trying to sway and influence us. This is, in my limited investing experience, unprecedented and so unprofessional.
To say that this deal is absurd, in terms of its valuation, is an understatement. It's at a P/S of 0.1 and a P/B of 0.13 (just think that through for a second. If the assets are worth 1/7th of what management claims on book, selling the parts out of bankruptcy could yield them more - now companies rarely sell at a P/B of 1). It's really difficult to see if this deal is actually better than bankruptcy or not. The assets may actually yield more in a bankruptcy court even after lawyer fees. I have never seen anything so absurd in my life.
Their contracts alone, given their ARR, should be worth way more than 10 mil to a competitor. So why is a competitor not buying this, even if they have to fire everyone and trash everything, and simply takeover the contracts?
How on earth was the refinancing left to reach this point when time and time again they reassured us it's no problem? What the hell were they doing?
I don't have an answer. I can just say that it smells really fishy.
As a heads up, I am sick and tired of being a mod here. It's taking too much time. I wanted to add someone else as a mod and leave, but I am a rookie, and can't even figure out how to add another mod on reddit. Given what I am witnessing, I worry that if I leave, someone with ulterior motives might take over the sub and sabotage any opportunity for you all to discuss this. But don't be surprised if I am gone one day and the sub is left without a mod. Being a school teacher is not my cup of tea.

Chapter 241: Until Now The doors to the Hartzwiese Adventurerâs Guild opened.
Before, the sound of raucous laughter could be heard flooding the street outside, filling the quiet of a spring night with all the debauchery the local drunkards had to offer.
Despite the halls of adventurers not being formal drinking establishments, those within were ready to compete in boisterousness with all the taverns, inns and pubs of the town combined. And also win. Handily.
And yetâ
The moment the doors parted and I stepped within, a hush as quiet as any grave fell over its inhabitants.
A woman balancing with her derrière upon the head of another became still, the alcohol in her cup the only movement as it dribbled onto a stunned face below her.
A man slurping from the communal cauldron stared wordlessly, the stew pouring in, and then out of his mouth as the muscles of his throat forgot the means to swallow.
A bartender asleep upon a row of kegs quietly rose, the sudden din of silence waking him where the sound of debauchery and those drinking from the taps beside him had failed.
Here, there, and everywhere, eyes widened as the sudden silence was filled with the sounds of my footsteps as I strolled past, my loyal handmaiden and my brotherâs attendant in my wake.
And alsoâ
Mreow.
Mrewowow.
Meww.
Cats.
Tabby cats.
Calico cats.
Ragdoll cats.
Cats with twirly whiskers. Cats with puffy faces. Cats with slightly rounded ears.
Behind me, skipping around my legs while taking turns to sit upon my shoulders and very occasionally my head, were a legion of cats of various shapes, sizes and colours.
But no matter the springiness of their whiskers, the shine of their coat or the liveliness of their tails, one thing to bring them all together was the anarchy they caused.
This was no neat line of ducklings following after their mother.
This was a barbarian horde.
With no sense of organisation other than a shared drive to claim everything as their own, they immediately skipped amidst the stunned adventurers, scavenging for all the copious scraps while still turning their noses away from the alcohol forming sticky traps upon the floor.
Saying nothing, I allowed their demanding cries to fill up the hall as I swept forwards, pausing before a wall plastered from end to end with faded notices and requests long gone unanswered.
One by one, I systemically tore every request featuring a crudely drawn image of a cat, gathering into my arms a pile of parchment large enough to reach my chin.
Then, I made my way to the wooden desk.
A receptionist waited with a smile at the ready.
âGreetings! Welcome to the Hartzwiese branch of the Adventurerâs Guild. I see youâve removed several notices from theââ
Poomph.
Silenced but unperturbed, this latest clone watched as I dropped the stack of requests onto her desk, before promptly topping off the stack with a copper ring.
âDo what must be done,â I said, my voice defiant. âI am ready.â
The receptionist answered me with a smile more permanent than the wall the notices were torn from.
A moment laterâ
â[Identify].â
A green hue appeared in her clasped palms as she assessed the ring.
âJuliette. B-rank. Your registered branch is Reitzlake.â
The sound of several cups clattered against the floor.
âWelcome again to Hartzwiese. I see from your commission history that you have an extraordinary amount of completions for recovering lost cats. May I assume the significant number of cats now roaming the branch hall relate to the notices removed from the wall?â
I pursed my quivering lips.
âMaybe.â
âWonderful. And how many cats is it that youâve rescued?â
â... Lots.â
âI see. Please give me a moment while I confirm the requirements of our commissions.â
The receptionist swiftly retrieved a stack of parchment from a drawer.
As she flicked through, her eyes simultaneously went to every cat roaming, napping and clawing in the hall. A skill not even monstrous overseers from the abyss with their dozens of eyestalks could match. But thatâs only to be expected.
Wherever these receptionists were found, it was from a level deeper than any monster dared roam.
Eventually, she gave a nod.
âThank you for waiting. There appears to be an excess of cats in relation to the number of commissions we have available. Weâll endeavour to ensure that every cat is rehomed at the earliest opportunity through our partner agencies and charities. But unfortunately, I can only provide official acknowledgement for cats rescued through a formal commission.â
I sucked in a deep breath, hoping that patience was one of the things I accidentally inhaled.
âFine. And how many commissions does that end up being, then? ⌠10? 15?â
The receptionist flicked through her bundle of parchments once more.
â94.â
â... Excuse me?â
âI can confirm the successful completion of 94 simultaneous F-ranked commissions. Congratulations. This is a new record, breaking what appears to be one earlier set by yourself. A remarkable achievement befitting a B-rank member of the guild.â
The receptionistâs professional smile never wavered.
I thought that would be the worst of it.
But thenâ
She slowly brought her hands together ⌠and started applauding.
It was the leak which broke the dam.
At once, she was joined by all who were present to witness this crowning moment of regret.
I turned around in time to see a riot in motion.
âW-Wooooooooooo!!!!â
âIn ⌠Incredible âŚâ
âA new record ⌠I ⌠I heard it was broken in Trierport ⌠to think Iâd witness it broken again!â
âA B-rank adventurer ⌠?! Where ⌠Where did she come from ⌠?!â
There was no polite, respectful applause here.
It was the wild cheering of a crowd at a tournament. The whooping cries of theatregoers calling for an encore. The acclaim of my father as he elbowed others to delight in the poetry Iâd written when I was 6 and thus now regularly attempted to burn.
Everywhere I turned, I saw and heard the acclaim mixed with shouts of horror as mugs of alcohol were spilled on purpose and by accident. The layabouts stomped on the floor, doing their best to murder decorum under the strain of unbridled emotion.
Only a few falling teardrops formed any hint of more dignified revelry, the glimmer of admiration running down cheeks as sniffles were hidden amidst the raucous cheering.
And then I bore witness to the most morbid sight.
Like a tidal wave of soiled clothes and snotty faces, they suddenly came as one, hands reaching out for me with dripping mugs still in their grips. Horror struck at my soul. And unlike a farmer whoâd scarpered into the night, I had nobody who could heal a wound caused by hooligans accepting me as their own.
âA-Amazing!! Take my drink! Take anyoneâs drink!!â
âSo many cats rescued ⌠even my allergies canât believe it!â
âMy gods, itâs a legend! An adventurer among adventurers!â
This.
This right here.
This was the lowest point of my life ⌠were I not an unparalleled genius.
âOho ⌠ohoho âŚâ
At once, the wave halted.
Faces which were lit up in unabashed delight turned to looks of mild confusion against the tinkling music of my laughter.
They needed to cycle through the expressions until they reached horror and shame.
âOhhohohohohohoho!!â
⌠For I was no drunkard seeking to join their ranks!
No ⌠I was Juliette Contzen, 3rd Princess to the Kingdom of Tirea!
And that meant every action I took, every word I spoke, and every cat I saved was for a reason beyond the hopes and dreams these hoodlums had of wanton debauchery and rusting swords!
Indeed!
A lesser princess than I may slink away into the night, cowed by the utter shame, humiliation and disgrace of completing so many F-ranked requests that I somehow broke a record Iâd only just set!
But I was made of greater things!
Of schemes and subterfuges so deep that it would take too long to explain! The plots I weaved were a silken web more intricate than any cogs which made up Coppelia as she doubled up, desperately trying to stop herself from succumbing to more pain from laughter!
And that meant with every cat request now denied to these louts ⌠they would finally do some work!
âOhoho ⌠ohohohohoho!! Behold and be afraid! Witness before you the coming of a new dawn, here to lift you from your days of boundless reverie! Unfurl the shutters and gaze upon a radiance so pure it brands your dallying minds! The scorching sun has come to test the snailâs back, and all that your bleary eyes see is a great salt lake to devour you whole! Shrivel as you cling upon the sweat which drips upon your brow, for that is the proof youâre yet alive!â
A sudden silence met my proclamation of their coming ordeal.
And thenâ
âWooooooooooooooooooooooo!â
âI donât understand! But what a speech!â
âIf she can do it, so can we!â
I raised a hand to my lips, barely covering my smile.
âOhhhohohohohohohoho ⌠!â
Here it was!
Operation: Gainful Employment!
An entirely new strategy, as bold as it was uncharted!
By removing what was surely the vast majority of missing cat quests available to the adventurers of this town, they would have no choice, utterly none whatsoever, but to engage in actual work! The type of work adventurers openly advertised themselves as doing!
Monster subjugation! Crime prevention! Fetching artifacts from hidden dungeons and then succumbing to their wounds at the entrance while the Royal Treasury pocketed the treasure!
Yes, this was clearly a highly experimental tactic.
But what was I, if not a bastion of creativity?
At the very least, I utterly refused to accept the status quo! An organisation dedicated exclusively to rescuing lost cats or elbowing into my kingdomâs sovereign affairs was no good to me!
Thus ⌠I could not cower like some towngirl nauseous from the smell of their revelry.
Instead, I would squeeze the Adventurerâs Guild dry until the day I replaced them with an army of trained poodles. Until that joyous day, I could never tear my eyes away when they waited to be robbed.
To do so was more than a dereliction of duty âŚ
Why, Iâd be an accomplice to their drunken escapades!
My vow remained unchanged. For my goal, I would brave any indignity. The ring I was hoping the receptionist would forget to return was proof of that.
And thusâ
I stood tall as a summer reed, proud in the knowledge that I had no need to feel even an inkling of embarrassment over completing 94 simultaneous F-ranked commissions! âŚ
âPfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffft.â
âS-Stop at once! You are not to laugh!â
âPffffttt~â
âC-Coppelia!!â
Clearly not seeing the angel of self-sacrifice who I was, Coppelia held one hand tightly around her mouth. Even so, she failed to stop either the sound of her amusement or the tears falling from her eyes.
My only salvation was that it came at significant cost to her. Even now, she careened between laughter and painful regret.
I decided to offer both her and myself mercy.
Turning to the receptionist, I found a modest pouch already waiting upon the wooden desk. As well as a copper ring waiting beside it.
âThank you for your service to the Adventurerâs Guild,â said the receptionist, her professional smile undaunted by the commotion. âYour total remuneration is 102 gold crowns, 7 silver crowns and 9 copper crowns. Iâve taken the liberty to compile all your separate payments together.â
I took the pouch and ignored the ring.
The receptionist pushed the ring forwards.
A long moment later, I collected it, uncertain what a receptionist would do if I tossed it into the communal cauldron, but knowing it would somehow still end up on my finger regardless.
With my head held high, I bravely ignored the chorus of voices unknowingly cheering for their own hardship as I swept past. Renewed tears and applause filled the hall. A few cats attempted to follow me. I stopped to shoo them away.
And then I was outside, the door closing behind me.
â... Goodness, that was quite the sight,â said Renise with a bemused smile. âIt reminded me somewhat of the inns of Reitzlakeâs docks. I wonder if all the halls of adventurers are like that, or merely those which you frequent?â
âPlease donât insinuate Iâm responsible for the debauchery which occurs wherever the Adventurerâs Guild is concerned. Thatâs something I can claim no credit for.â
âYou say that ⌠but to me, it seems that you caused quite a stir. That really is a remarkable number of cats you rescued, after all. Even I can tell that 94 simultaneous F-ranked commissionsââ
âMiss Renise.â
The maidâs smile wavered against whatever fatigued expression I was making.
A moment later, it fell away entirely as she switched to her role as my brotherâs attendant and the leader of whatever scoundrels heâd charged her with herding.
â... Yes, I suppose thereâs time for idle conversation later. Thereâs a guardhouse nearby. We should report on all thatâs happened tonight.â
I gave a nod of agreement.
Hopefully, the baroness hadnât woken from her stupor yet. But if she had, I was certain the single portrait of myself Iâd returned to the wall of her gallery to smile down at her gagged and bound state would calm her nerves.
Renise hummed towards the direction of Hartzwieseâs centre, before returning her attention to me.
âIf you wish to keep your identity incognito, I can see guards sent to where theyâre needed using my own authority, and arrange for the appropriate seizure of the goods and crowns weâve discovered.â
I beamed at once.
My, so prudent! Itâs little wonder she was chosen by Roland!
âA judicious offer. And one Iâll accept gladly, providing the burden isnât too severe.â
âThis is merely an administrative task, and little burden compared to what both yourself and Miss Coppelia regularly perform. In any event, it is only efficient. I expect Iâll be spending a significant amount of time at the baronessâs farmstead. It is quite extensive. If possible, I would like to make use of it for Rose House. I imagine having such a facility close to the Granholtz border would have its uses.â
I nodded, already forgetting the barnâs existence.
âI encourage you to use your discretion as required. My brother has put his trust in you, and so I both expect and know that you shall not disappoint in furthering the kingdomâs prosperity.â
The young woman smiled. One filled with appreciation, but also lacking ambition.
Good.
An excellent combination as far as retainers were concerned.
âThank you. Although I worry you place too much trust in my abilities. In truth, those like Baroness Arisa would have made for a greater asset to the kingdom. Her resourcefulness must be acknowledged.â
âIt is not resourcefulness my kingdom requires. It is loyalty. And hers is a pit so empty it drains others.â
âThatâs true. But at least we were able to acquire some useful things from her nonetheless.â
Renise pulled out a tiny vial from the belt around her thigh.
A golden liquid was stored within, glimmering with an unnatural light.
âThese were in her chamber,â she said, her eyes lacking emotion as she surveyed the bright liquid. âWhen we met, she actually attempted to purchase my loyalty with this.â
âA suspect vial. How quaint. And what miracle did she promise?â
âOne that would wake my parents from their curse of eternal slumber.â
â... And is it?â
âI donât believe so, no. This is one of many identical vials I found in her chamberâs desk drawer. All prominently labelled with instructions to only drink as required to stave off the effects of bloating.â
Renise returned the vial to her belt with a slightly embarrassed smile.
âItâs still useful,â she admitted. âBut just not for what I require.â
I gave a simple nod as my reply.
Nothing else needed to be said.
She hoped to see her parents wake from their prison of dormancy. An understandable wish. And one I wasnât required to supplement with the comment that no pair named the Smuggler King and the Smuggler Queen were likely to receive as light a sentence as their daughter.
I could not speak on behalf of Roland. Although I imagined that as a kind man, he would prefer not to pass judgements which were total. But as the Crown Prince, he did not have the luxury of kindness.
It would take much to change their fate.
But perhaps thatâs why Renise was here, still proving true, and not accepting stomach ailment potions from a baroness.
A moment of silence followed.
Renise gave a short sigh. And that was that.
She set her eyes on the task aheadâat least until whatever words sheâd parted her mouth to say were interrupted by Coppeliaâs humming instead.
âSooooooooooooooo ⌠you just want to wake up two people eternally sleeping, right?â
A small smile met her optimistic voice.
âIf a cure were readily available, Iâm certain I would have found it by now. I believe one might be possible, but it would take skill and ingredients beyond any apothecary I know of.â
âWell, sure, you could go that way. But what about going straight to the source instead?â
âThe source?â
âSure. Theyâre asleep, right? So just ask the one in charge of where they are now.â
âIâm ⌠not quite sure I follow?â
Coppelia clapped her hands together and beamed.
âThe Spring Court is the realm of dreams. Chances are, they must have shown their faces around a few times by now. If you ask the Spring Queen nicely, she might do you a favour.â
âThe Spring Queen? ⌠The fae?â
âMmh~ luckily, we have someone with connections here!â
Renise was startled out of her reply.
It was nothing compared to me. The one being pointed at.
âCoppelia!â I said, truly aghast at the suggestion. âThe fae are not to be taken lightly. Why, I still have nightmares about my conversation with the Winter Queen! I learned a side to royalty that day which I shall never forget ⌠and Iâm quite poorer for it!â
âYou met ⌠the Winter Queen?â asked Renise, her eyes suddenly wide.
âUnfortunately, yes, but I had zero intention of meeting her, and Iâve just as little intention of meeting any other fae as well. Including the Spring Queen.â
I waved away the coming query to declare what was just as important as my lack of enthusiasm.
âBesides, Iâve not the foggiest idea how I would even hope to use these supposed connections I have.â
âOh, thatâs the easy bit,â said Coppelia, her casual disregard for what counted as âeasyâ more terrifying than any lout Iâd met today. âThe hard part is getting them to do what you want. But meeting them? The fae are creatures of stories. If the time is right, theyâll speak to youâone way or another.â
âThen they must book an appointment. One which I can formally reject.â
âI mean, I donât think you have much choice. You didnât last time, right?â
âThe last time, I was sat beside the Winter Queenâs crown. I see no fae artifacts to hook me away. And that means utterly no scenario in which I could be abducted without my expressââ
I suddenly stopped, clasping my hands around my mouth.
A moment later, I raised my arms in a martial art Iâd just invented, turning repeatedly on the spot.
Renise blinked at me.
âExcuse me, but what areââ
âShhshhshh!!â
I paused, gazing intently around at the quiet, dark streets of Hartzwiese, all the while ignoring Coppeliaâs giggling at my near miss.
That ⌠That was close!
âO-Oho ⌠oho ⌠I almost invited something terrible. Truly, itâs perhaps best not to needlessly voice things which Fae Queens and their deviant brand of magic could use âŚâ
Coppelia nodded at me, as proud as she was clearly disappointed.
âYouâre lucky. If the Spring Queen had a sense of humour, sheâd have snagged you right there and then.â
âNo. If the Spring Queen had a sense of humour, sheâd wait untilââ

2024.05.19 02:24 Infamous_Regret3583 Need help. Can medical bills be added to chapter 13 if insurance company is demanding provider to pay back overpayments dated before the filing date?
This is a rather unique situation. Im in the middle of a chapter 13. Converted to a 13 in march. My confirmation will be in July.
In 2019 I left my DOD civilian job. Due to a technicality, I could not terminate my coverage with my insurance. Someone somewhere in HR needed to send a form to the insurance provider letting them know to terminate my coverage. So the insurance carrier kept paying bills even after years of telling them not to pay. They knew what was going on. It was out of their hands. Out of mine. Trust me it's a cluster***k.
Fast forward to 2023, they finally terminate my coverage. They have guaranteed me they will not come after me for the overpayments based on the fact that I did everything I could to tell them not to pay the bills. I even told my medical providers not to bill them. To bill my current insurance. The insurance even sent me a letter I am not liable for the overpayments. That's great!
So now they're going after the providers to pay them back. im being copied on the letters to my medical providers demanding payment. So now that has me concerned, because providers can also turn around and ask me to pay them back.
So assuming the medical providers want me to pay them, can the debts be added to my case? I know the debt did not exist pre-filing, but the service dates are all before the filing date.
TLDR: Can medical overpayments from service dates before filing bankruptcy be added to my chapter 13 case since the debt did not technically exist when I filed?

2024.05.19 02:18 Reptilefan92 Questions about using bank account and debit card prior to Bankruptcy (USA, Ohio)?
So, my parents are considering Bankruptcy. They have had a consultation with a lawyer, but are unsure if or when they will proceed yet, as my Dad has some surgeries on the horizon he wants to have done before starting the process. If they do it, it would likely be several months from now, maybe August or September. Having said that, there was one thing they were a bit unclear of when speaking to the Lawyer.
The Lawyer told them they will need to be careful about spending, both on their credit cards and from their Bank Account, in the months prior to filing Bankruptcy. He said they could get in trouble or even be sued for fraud if they racked up Credit Card debt, or spent all the savings in their Bank Account in the months prior to filing. However, he apparently didn't go into a great deal of specifics on this point. My parents wanted to know specifically how careful they need to be, and for how long prior to filing.
For example, my Mom needs a new Laptop (her old one is a Chromebook approaching end of life), which she primarily uses to bay bills and the like. It's pretty much a necessity for them, and would cost about $200-300. Additionally, my Dad has severe Parkinson's and is pretty much bedridden due to walking/balance issues, so watching TV is all he has. His old TV has died, and he would like to get a replacement, again probably something in the $200-300 range. They would be using money from their Bank Account (specifically savings, I'm not sure how much they actually have, but I think it is around $1000) for these purchases, not Credit Cards. Would these kinds of purchases be alright right now, several months before filing, or would they present a problem in Bankruptcy?
Also, they were advised against using Credit Cards prior to Bankruptcy. However, they rely on them for many things, from groceries to bills and utilities, food, etc. My Mom also subscribes to a couple streaming services for my Dad. They're going to try avoid spending what they can with the Cards, but also depend on them for so many things.
So, will any of this get them into any trouble, or have them sued for fraud? Will the Trustee come after them? They're pretty concerned and confused on this particular point. Again, this is all prior to Bankruptcy. They have not done anything yet. They've signed nothing, started no process, paid no lawyers, etc. They're unsure how they should be managing their purchases, both with Credit Cards, and with their Bank Account, several months prior to starting the Bankruptcy process?

2024.05.19 02:15 thesheepshepard Roland Arryn, Knight of the Gate
PC
Reddit Account: u/TheSacredGroves Discord Tag: justinkayce
Name and House: Roland, of House Arryn
Age: 28
Cultural Group: Andal
Appearance: Tall, lean, well-muscled, handsome, fair -
Roland is the portrait of a Knight of legend, of the Winged Knight come again. Harsh sky-blue eyes, severe cheekbones, and the familial aquitaine nose give him a cold and distant look - but one frequently broken by his warm and gentle smile. He keeps his pale-blonde hair long and his jaw clean shaven, accentuating the lines of his face. Roland is always neat and clean, his armour burnished and his threads well-tailored and fashionable.
Trait: Blademaster
Skill(s): Swords (e), Andal Knight (e), Essosi Blademaster
Talent(s): Dancing, Hawking, Singing
Negative Trait(s): -
Starting Title(s): Knight of the Gate
Starting Location: King's Landing
Alternate Characters: n/a
Bio-Timeline
- 3 BC: Roland Arryn is born to King Joffrey I Arryn and his wife, Queen Sharra. The third son, Roland's birth firmly secures the succession - fortunately timed considering his father's death later that year.
- 1 BC: The Conquest passes the two year old Roland by, the only impact on him being the squall he raised when Vhagar landed atop the Eyrie.
- 1-4 AC: The post-conquest world is the only one Roland knows, and he grows up in a household dedicated much to it. House Arryn in this period is an odd family, to say the least. Sharra Arryn's attentions are much divided and she has less time than a mother normally would for her third son; Roland is mostly raised by the medley of the Arryn Household and Court and is well-moulded by that as the expectations of maester, septon, courtiers, knights, servants, begin to be shape him into what an Arryn 'should' be in the eyes of their people.
- 5 AC: Roland struggles to find his place as a third son with little direct supervision. It is decided early that he does not have the smarts to become Septon nor Maester... but even as a youth Roland has a keen interest in the training yard, often an annoying shadow to his eldest brother and his squire friends. However, even at eight years old it is clear there is a natural talent to the boy - and when he defeats a squire four years older than him in a training bout in the presence of Lord Corbray, the famed Raven Knight, takes the precocious boy on as a page.
- 6 AC: Roland is by Lord Corbray's side when he tracks down the Root Father. Now a newly minted squire, Roland ignores his knight's orders to remain with the horses and sneaks after them. He kills his first man there, taking a clansman from behind as he in turn tried to attack the Raven Knight from the back. It is not an honourable kill or a clean death, and Roland is badly injured in the scuffle - but he survives. Lord Corbray is furious, and fiercely instils in Roland the importance of fighting with chivalry and honour. He almost abandons Roland, but his tearful begging convinces the Raven Knight that Roland is genuine in his regret.
- 7 AC: Visenya Targaryen's visits to the Eyrie become more frequent, and Roland's wariness of the stern, dragon-riding pagan is overcome by his fascination with said dragon, her skill with the blade... and his mother's growing closeness to the Queen. Visenya becomes something of a second mother to Roland, and her influences war with Lord Corbray's own. From Lord Corbray, Roland learns chivalry, honour, piety, and how a true Andal Knight should act. From Queen Visenya, Roland learns the importance of victory, and an understanding that wars must be won - he learns practicalities and realities. It is a schism within Roland that troubles him, but from both he learns the blade and even at ten it is more and more obvious there is something special about Roland. He quarrels sometimes with his brothers. Jonos, as even at ten, Roland could find little but disdain for his scheming, sneering, brother, and Ronnel as again even at ten, Roland already began to see himself as the better sword (and grows envious that Ronnel gets to adventure and party while Lord Corbray keeps Roland on a much tighter leash).
- 10 AC: Roland learns of his mother's death while at Heart's Home. He returns home swiftly, and his grief is overwhelming. There are few Roland can turn to; Ronnel is concerned with his marriage and rulership, Arwen retreats into the forests, and Jonos is Jonos. Roland relies further on Visenya, who has experienced such grief herself recently and guides Roland through it. Her place as a mother to Roland is confirmed in utterance. To distract himself, Roland throws himself fully into his training and an ensuing victory at a squire's melee at the age of ten and three sparks his reputation as a squire to watch across the Vale.
- 12 AC: Roland, at ten and five, wins the squire's tourney at Maidenâs Bay. He is stopped from sneaking into the higher tourneys by Lord Corbray, much to Roland's chargrin and his demand to be knighted is refused. His calamitously sized ego is rapidly deflated by the Eyrie's Septon and Queen Visenya, who pick him apart and teach him between them the values of humility, and the value of letting ones abilities speak for themselves. Roland does his best to control his pride in the future; ego is rarely ever an issue from him.
- 13 AC: While the honour of the day goes to the Cavaliers, Roland Arryn wins his spurs when the Painted Dogs are crushed under the Moon Gate, killing near as much as the Cavalier Superior herself. That his knighthood was overshadowed by an order of women warriors initially irritated Roland, but recalling his lessons from the last year, he happily shared the honour alongside them and was one of the voices that petitioned his brother to replace the Keeper with the Cavaliers. Knighted, Roland joins the Brotherhood of the Winged Knights and although young, is a key figure in helping rejuvenate the Brotherhood.
- 14 AC: Roland is betrothed to Alayne Waynwood; their romance is one from the storybooks, an instant and deep connection from the moment of meeting.
- 15 AC: Roland and Alayne wed as soon as they turn ten and eight. Part in celebration and part as dignitaries, the pair go to King's Landing together as guests of Lord Orys' great hunt for his son's coming of age. At the Kingswood Catastrophe, Roland saves Orys' life, but Alayne is slain defending other noblewomen. Roland hunts down, duels, and kills the King of the Wood afterwards. He is offered the Whitecloak for his service; on advice from Visenya, he declines, claiming his family needs him and he can defend Laenor and Visenya just as well in the Vale.
- 16 AC: Roland withdraws into mourning for a year, taking up a brutal campaign of bandit hunting in the Vale to cope with his grief.
- 17-18 AC: Roland returns to his brother's side, continuing to help rebuild the Brotherhood of the Winged Knights and slowly coming to terms with Alayne's death. He begins to more keenly ride the tourney track between his duties, earning a reputation as a fine lance alongside his growing reputation as one of the greatest knights in the realm.
- 19 AC: With Roland settling into his knightly role, Ronnel names him Knight of the Gate, with the downside of forcing Roland to have to keep a firm hand on Jonos from time to time when their brother is exiled to the Gate for yet another slight. The relationship between Jonos and Roland sours; where Ronnel threatens Jonos with exile or the Wall, Roland threatens him with death.
- 20 AC: Requested personally by Visenya, Roland tries to take on Prince Laenor as a squire. They are utterly ill-suited to the role, and after many frustrating failed training sessions in the yard, Roland gives up, labelling the Prince untrainable. The relationship between the two almost-siblings sours, but Roland works to repair the rift he created between them with much kinder words.
- 21 AC: Roland develops a relationship with a fellow Knight of the Vale, Colmar Corbray - the son and heir of the aging Raven Knight. Colmar has a fire in him that Roland can't help but seek, and he excuses Colmar's many flaws far too readily. It is a secretive bond, and toxic, but Roland does not believe he deserves better after letting Alayne die.
- 22 AC: The Winged Knights are whipped into fervour as yet another piece of the ancient armour is found. Roland himself dreams of perhaps finding more. Inspired my tales of the armour, the Brotherhood grows even further and in order to keep a firm hand on them, Ronnel makes Roland their Commander.
- 23 AC: Roland and Colmar's relationship deteriorates, ending in a duel that sees Colmar humiliated but, thankfully, alive. The two men hate each other from then on.
- 25 AC: Roland rides by his brother's side to King's Landing.
AC
Name and House: Marla of Gulltown
Age: 34
Cultural Group: Andal
Appearance: Broad and strong with well-calloused hands,
Marla is as obvious a blacksmith as Roland is a knight. She keeps her brown hair tied severely back, framing her dour face with its squinting brown and wide mouth that wears an almost perpetual frown.
Trait: Artisan (Weapons)
Skill(s): Craftsman (e weapons; e armor)
Talent(s): Whittling, singing, maintenance of arms and armour
Negative Trait(s): -
Starting Title(s): King's Landing
Starting Location: Master of the Armoury of the Bloody Gate
Timeline
- 9 BC: Marla of Gulltown is born to a master-armourer in Gulltown
- 1 BC: Marla begs her father to help as his assistant as he tries to deal with the massive increase in orders thanks to the Conquest; he reluctantly agrees. Her older brother dies when Vhagar burns the Vale's fleet.
- 2 AC: Marla secretly goes out to work her father's forge at night, practicing at smithing - and finding herself something of a prodigy.
- 6 AC: Her father dies of a weak heart. Marla and her mother discover his great gambling debts, and no money saved for them. They keep her father's death a secret as Marla works the forge to complete his current orders - what comes after that, no one knows.
- 7 AC: Somehow, the charade is kept up. Marla's father is portrayed as a recluse who has devoted himself to his work and the Smith and will see no one in person. This mystery increases the shop's popularity, and many marvel at how greatly his work has improved since taking up this holy vow of solitude.
- 10 AC: A young merchant attempts to woo Marla and is rebuffed. Spying on her, he discovers her secret, and spreads it through Gulltown. The reputation of the shop collapses, and Marla and her mother flee ahead of those furious at the deception, the Faith angry that they had been used, and the law's punishment for fraud. They flee to Pentos.
- 11 AC: Marla finds work with a Qohorik blacksmith, an old master, now drunk and washed up. He teaches her all he knows. Helping each other back to their feet, the pair set up a proper shop, once more, together.
- 15 AC: The old blacksmith dies; Pentos proves to be unfriendly in its business to a woman by herself without the old master by her side. Despairing, Marla hears about the Cavaliers of the Vale, and reckons that if her home will now accept female knights, surely they'll accept a female blacksmith.
- 16 AC: Marla returns to the Vale with her mother. She avoids Gulltown and instead heads to the Gates of the Moon, seeking to offer her services to the Cavaliers. She is accosted by vengeful Painted Dogs on the way, and saved by the miraculous intervention of Roland. He offers to accompany her to the Gates of the Moon, where Marla is gladly accepted.
- 17 AC: Having forged arms and armour for Roland as well, which Roland raves over, Roland has his brother take her on as the Arryn's personal smith and armourer.
- 19 AC: When Roland is given the Bloody Gate, he begs Marla to come with him, who agrees in part. The smith spends her time between the two Gates and the Eyrie, overseeing the arms and armours of all the Arryn forces. Mostly remaining at the Bloody Gate, Marla becomes an integral part of the Winged Knights.
- 20-24 AC: Marla is regularly persuaded to accompany Roland to yet another tourney to help maintain his arms and armour. She grumbles, but secretly enjoys the competitions. Tales of the Winged Knights armour fascinate the Blacksmith, and with her small amount of Qohorik experience she helps verify the pieces as true Valyrian Steel. Her and Roland worsen each others obsession with tracking down the rest.
- 25 AC: Marla rides to King's Landing with her Lord and Knight, ready to work her magic if Roland breaks his armour yet again.

2024.05.19 02:02 wallstbetsapparel File for bankruptcy, consumer proposal, etc?
Hi there, I'm M25, looking for some solutions here. For context, I'm living in British Columbia, Canada. I think the situation can be viewed from the light of any country though. I've taken on about 60,000 in federal debt from the covid times, in addition to currently owing about $15,000 in back taxes, plus an additional $7,500 or so once I finally get around to filing my taxes from the 2021 year.
The last couple of years I haven't worked much. I was self-employed, and never taught about taxes. In fact, my education about taxes, from my non-educated, high school drop out father, was basically, "taxes are theft," "earn your money in cash," and "the only thing you'd need to file taxes for is if you want a loan for a house, car, business, etc." I still agree with many of his sentiments today, and I know he's not the only one with these ideas. Frankly I find it hard and very frustrating to have to give my money to the government, considering I know they're just unlimited printing money and the limited amount of money I have right now isn't going to make even a small dent in the national debt.
The $60,000 from the federal government is currently accruing interest at a nominal rate of 5% per year. $3,000 per year in interest.
The reason I haven't worked much, is largely because of some mental health and physical health issues. Now, I find myself in a situation where I owe roughly $80,000 to the federal and provincial governments. In addition, I have now racked up an additional $30,000 in student loans [also, from the federal/provincial governments][no interest for now, thankfully, not overly concerned about it.]
There's $110,000 in total debt to the government. I have also, an additional $25,000 approximately in personal loans from friends/family.
I have high hopes for myself, always have. I'm fairly sure, I could win some pretty large contracts with enough grit, or expand an existing business with someone I know, at the end of this summer. Both options have a good potential of coming true in the long-term, I think. But in the meantime, I have considerable debt which I'm not sure what to do about, and, frankly, it's depressing.
If I filed for bankruptcy, I'd lose the option to keep getting student loans, and the federal grants that go along with it [free money]. It's not clear if this happens if I file the consumer proposal. I thought about just continuing to run up the student loans, and then declare bankruptcy later, but, frankly, the whole idea of the debt hanging over my head during that time is very anxiety provoking, even if it's not 'immediately due.' I just want it out of my hair.
I have concerns that this becomes public record, and if I entered into politics later in life, that this might come back to burn me, but I'm honestly starting to get to the point where I think it might be there best option. There's also an element of feeling like a moral failure, if I have to take either of these options.
In summation:
What would you do in the scenario, and why?
What kind of mindset shift should I adopt around taxation?

2024.05.19 01:11 Dogpooppicker Donut update 5/18/2024
Donut has a new update today after the court confirmed the plan after their update yesterday:
On May 17th, the court confirmed Genesis' Amended Joint Chapter 11 Plan. This is a huge milestone in the recovery of funds.
According to the decision, US dollar creditors can anticipate a 100% recovery, but note that a full recovery is not yet guaranteed at this stage.
Next, the Debtors' will submit a Confirmation Order to the court for approval, which we expect within a week or two.
Once the Confirmation Order is approved, we should be in a position to confirm the distribution values, timing of initial distributions, and distribution mechanics, including how to prepare your account.
We will provide the next update on May 24th.
Important: Please be aware that Donut, Genesis, and Kroll \will never text you* regarding the Genesis bankruptcy.*

2024.05.19 01:00 proteinbasedrobot Collection for a 2 year old labcorp bill which was never sent to me.
I came to the US on a students visa in 2021. I fell terribly sick in the very first week of coming to the US. I was my university's approved health insurance plan. I went to my university's hospital; got tested for numerous things; and accordingly got treated. I gave them my insurance and waited for my bill. I checked the hospital portal often and got no outstanding bill. To which I thought my insurance might have covered the cost but having heard all the fuss about inaccessibility to health in the US due to its cost I was still skeptical about it. I kept checking my mail and the hospital billing portal diligently for any bill that I might get for 1 and a half years.
I got my SSN in the beginning of 2022 and graduated in 2023. Just when I graduated I saw a debt in my credit history which lowered my credit down. I panicked, researched about what collection is, and yada yada, & figured it was from labcorp. Now the only time I had been to the hospital was in 2021 so if it was a legitimate bill, it had to be from that 1 visit.
From what I read online the collection company is legally needed to communicate the outstanding amount/try to collect the amount before filling for a collection against my credit. There had been no communication to me regarding this what so ever from any party involved. I checked my hospital bill on the portal and there was nothing outstanding.
First, I filled a dispute to two of three credit bureaus where it was reported, one of which removed the debt from my file. While Experian did not resolve the dispute, for which I contacted the debt collection company. I explained to them that I had received no communication for the bill/collection, and I am not sure what the bill is about. They said they had no contact information of me what so ever, neither my address, or my phone number, and that it was a medical bill of $592. This was later removed from my account.
Since it had been 2 years there was not way for me to put a claim for this against my insurance. I feel it was not my mistake that I had to cover it out of my pocket for a medical treatment while being insured(which I paid for). It was a mistake on their end to not communicate/send me a bill on time for me to be able to claim it.
Now the claim has reappeared from a different collection company exactly 3 years later and is affecting my credit. What can I do? Again, no communication was made from this other collection company before putting it up for collection. Can I go to the consumer court? or hire a lawyer? I can't have it showing up every year and reducing my credit for no reason.
TLDR: Got collection for a 2 year old medical bill without prior communication. Raised dispute, and it disappeared from credit history. The collection is added again to my credit history a year later. Seek help on what to do.
edit: Added TLDR.

2024.05.19 00:52 lumpytorta Do I have a medical malpractice case(s)? I am struggling here with multiple and I need advice.
F28 with Ovarian Cancer and I really need some advice here, please donât downvote this. I am really struggling with medical negligence not just from one doctor, but multiple. Iâve been dealing with a lot of discrimination because Iâm young and âhealthy lookingâ and doctors constantly dismiss me or discriminate me for some reason and Iâm tired of it. Iâve been sick and disabled since last November and I had a job but started my LOA then.
For two years I was seeing a rheumatologist for an underlying autoimmune disorder(s) like SLE OR MS and was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Primary immunodeficiency, dysautonomia, fibromyalgia, CIDP and still being investigated for more issues.
In November I decided to go on a LOA because my flares were starting to become more frequent and severe. My psychiatrist was the one who filled out the LOA paperwork for the time from Nov-Dec because I was hesitant to ask my Rheumatologist. I was told by my rheumatologists office that filling out LOA paperwork was $300 out of pocket and at the time I didnât have that money so my psychiatrist signed it because I was also struggling with my mental health and family issues that time.
I was supposed to go back to work in January but at the start of the new year I got really sick and my flares started to ramp up again so I had to request a new LOA. My psychiatrist couldnât help me with my LOA paperwork anymore because it was more health related now and told me to go see my rheumatologist. I was still hesitant because of the fee and then when I was about to see my rheumatologist again and get my bloodwork done I got a surprise bill from the lab where I get my bloodwork done for $400 after insurance. They wouldnât let me get additional tests until I paid the fee and I couldnât see my rheumatologist until I had my bloodwork done. I made an appointment with my rheumatologist anyways but the soonest I could get wasnât until after the LOA deadline in March. I also couldnât get any disability benefits until that LOA form was filled out by my doctor so I had no income to pay for any of this.
I ended up in the Emergency Room on 2/16/24 a little over a week before I needed to submit the forms for LOA and at this point my employer was threatening to fire me for failing to provide the LOA paperwork. I tried explaining the situation to one of my managers but he wasnât having it and didnât care.
When I went to the first emergency room I went in for multiple serious symptoms, they knew I had an underlying autoimmune disorder causing the flares and that I had surgery 3 years prior to remove ovarian cysts on my right ovary. I told the emergency room that I had a lot of abdominal pain across multiple areas, I was really weak, fatigued, dealing with vertigo, migraines, blood in stool, persistent bloating, frequent urination, appetite loss, rapid weight gain, insomnia, tachycardia, high bp, neuropathic itch/ polyneuropathy and my symptoms were to the point where I was losing my ability to walk. My partner was holding me the entire time so I wouldnât fall.
The emergency room did a bunch of tests that included a basic blood panel, physical exam and a CT scan of my abdomen. They didnât find the bleeding but instead found that I had a complex 14cm tumor on my right ovary which they deemed a dermoid cyst.
When they gave me the news they officially diagnosed me with a âdermoid cyst from birthâ even though I countered their diagnosis and told them that was impossible because I had surgery 3 years prior. The doctor didnât backtrack at all, just stuttered and continued to discharge me because it âwasnât an emergencyâ just because I wasnât bleeding out despite all of my serious progressing symptoms.
I angrily left the ER knowing it was utter BS and deep down I knew it was cancer because of how sick I was. I could literally feel I didnât have much time but because I looked young and healthy and my basic blood panel didnât throw up any huge red flags at them even they dismissed me and misdiagnosed me. I wasnât even given anything to manage the pain.
I even told them I was already on a medical leave and that Iâve been really sick but that it was getting bad and I couldnât see my rheumatologist. However I didnât know about the tumor until then. I told them I needed help with the LOA paperwork too and had they admitted me I would have been able to get an extension and still have my job and benefits. I could have started treatment sooner and received disability pay but instead was forced to continue living with this pain. It was so large that I was at risk of torsion rupture and necrosis, Not to mention permanent nerve damage.
The next day I called up every gynecologist I could to see where I could go for the soonest appointment for an ultrasound. I found a doctor who took me as an emergency appointment a few days later and he confirmed it was most likely malignant and that I needed surgery ASAP. I talked to him about my LOA situation too because I was running out of time and I was too disabled to work. He also refused to help me sign my LOA paperwork because according to him, âovarian cancer canât cause systemic symptoms and youâre going to need to wait until surgery before I put you on leaveâ. I told him I had an underlying autoimmune disorder that I think is being exasperated by the cancer and I was just dismissed yet again despite needing someone to physically help me walk so I donât fall. He also didnât give me anything for the pain I was in.
I had to turn in my LOA that day but because of this I was forced to resign my position or face getting fired and becoming un-hirable so I had to quit. In quitting I lost everything, benefits, stocks, my job, my health, doctors. Iâm now in debt with multiple cc going to collections because I havenât been getting an income since January and Iâm just starting chemo so I have no idea when Iâll be able to work again. I donât know what to do here. I was going to try to settle my debt but with what money?? I might be forced into bankruptcy for 7 years now.
After I lost my insurance I applied for medi-cal but something with my application in there system wasnât right and it was in a never ending pending limbo state(Took about two months to actually sort it out). I tried waiting it out for two weeks, calling them sorting it out and doing it right by the system but every day I was getting sicker and I felt I was running out of time as I was bed ridden at this point.
Two weeks later I went to a different ER because at this point I couldnât sleep, I couldnât eat and I started getting migraines. I was miserable from enduring all the symptoms and never ending anxiety and mood swings of possibly having an autoimmune disorder like SLE and ovarian cancer.
The second ER finally admit me and confirmed it was cancer. I was admitted for emergency surgery and by this time the tumor had already ruptured, twisted my ovary and grew to 20cm at the largest point. This was also a battle but thatâs besides the point.
Anyways now to my current situation. I started chemo about two weeks ago and my current oncologist is also being negligent.
I found out the other day that she blindly prescribed a medication for nausea that interacts with a medication that I was already on. The interaction is known to cause arrhythmias apparently. During my first week of chemo I was taking both meds and mentioned that my chest had been feeling heavy and I had pain. I was told it was steroids. It continued and then one night as I was falling asleep my heart started to pound really hard for about 10-15 seconds. I told my doctor about it and again steroids.
That same day I went to pick up a prescription and just happened to ask if anything interacted and thatâs when I found out that it was a major interaction and I literally could have died had I not luckily already been titrating off of the offending medicine. I stopped taking those meds and immediately the chest pain stopped and I havenât had an episode like that since.
I am freaked out and donât want to continue my care with her due to her negligence. This should have been a conversation at minimum and she didnât even tell me she prescribed it let alone double check for interactions(she had the list of my current medications). I just got a notification from my pharmacy that it was ready. I also didnât know about the interaction when it was picked up because my mom picked it up for me and she doesnât speak English very well.
I talked to my care teams assistant and told her I wanted a change of doctors because I didnât trust her after this and she said she was going to put in the request. They called me yesterday though and said they werenât going to switch me because I had already started treatment. They refused to switch my doctors despite everything thatâs happened even though she literally almost accidentally killed me. I am livid and donât want to continue with them but theyâre giving me no choice but to continue seeing her.
I already set up an appointment for a second opinion but thatâs not for another two weeks before the appointment and I donât want to interrupt the treatment.
I have a rare type of ovarian cancer with a high grade tumor. It was a germ cell tumor called an immature teratoma. They said it is stage 1 but because I had emergency surgery and everything was rushed I donât feel this is an accurate diagnosis because I have pain in all of the surrounding areas where the tumor was pushing up against. (I also mentioned this to my oncologist but instead of running tests or anything else I was given a psych referral for anxiety because I have an adhd & bipolar diagnosis even though Iâve been stable for years and I wasnât overreacting in this case). The tumor was exasperating all of my autoimmune symptoms and causing me to be in a never ending flare so my body has been heavily damaged. Im becoming disabled at 28 and I donât know who to hold accountable here. I have so much anxiety with doctors now because Iâm traumatized from my experience with them dismissing me and discriminating against me. Like Iâm young so I âmust be able to tolerate moreâ. I have to constantly look up my lab results, medications, conditions, because of how much negligence and dismissal Iâve been dealing with over the years. Iâm scared Iâm going to die from something preventable and not cancer at this rate.
Iâm in a dark place right now and really need some advice here. What should I do? What CAN I DO? Who do I hold accountable? What do I need to have a solid malpractice case?? I have medical records for everything even when I went to the first ER that shows I had surgery before and their diagnosis or dermoid cyst from birth. I also have proof that my oncologist had a list of all my medications when she prescribed the anti nausea medication and she knew I was sensitive to most medications as I recently found out Iâm allergic to morphine and Benadryl of all things.
I feel like the first emergency room should at least be held liable for making me lose my job, misdiagnosing me, failing to treat me or provide relief and then sending me a $1600 medical bill. Someone help me with this please I am struggling and still havenât gotten approved for disability benefits yet so Iâve had no income since January. Thanks.

2024.05.19 00:28 iJeax Deep in a financial hole without a job and mental health issues. I need advice please. (Canada)
I'm reaching out for some advice on my current financial situation. Here's a bit of background:
â â
Situation: - I am currently out of work due to severe mental health and addiction issues.
- I am relying on social assistance as my only source of income.
- My total debt amounts to over $20,000, mostly from credit cards.
- I still have around $60,000 of available credit that I haven't touched
- I have no significant assets (no house)
- I do have a financed vehicle that I owe more on than it's fair market value
- I'm able to make the monthly payments on the vehicle using the social assistance money
- I'm due to see my GP to get help with my mental health and have an appointment with a therapist
â â
Concerns: - I have no way to pay these debts given my current circumstances.
- I'm aware that my debts will eventually default if I don't make payments, but I'm concerned about the long-term impacts on my credit and mental health.
- I'm considering whether bankruptcy might be a viable option, but I'm worried about the associated costs and the process itself.
â â
Questions: - Debt Default vs. Bankruptcy: Given my situation, would it be more beneficial to let my debts default rather than filing for bankruptcy? What are the long-term implications of each option on my credit and mental health?
- Social Assistance Protection: How protected are my social assistance payments from creditors? Can they garnish these payments if they obtain a court judgment?
- Stress Management: How can I manage the stress and mental health impacts of dealing with creditors and potential legal actions?
- Professional Help: Should I seek help from a credit counselor or a licensed insolvency trustee? What kind of assistance can they provide in my situation?
- Legal Action Likelihood: Considering I have no job or assets, how likely is it that creditors will take legal action against me?
â â Additional Information:
- I understand that letting my debts default will negatively impact my credit score for up to six years.
- Filing for bankruptcy could provide immediate relief from creditors, but it also has long-term credit implications.
- I'm trying to weigh the stress and financial implications of both options to make the best decision for my mental health and financial future.
- Thanks again for any advice you can provide.
Any advice, personal experiences, or suggestions on how to navigate this difficult situation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help and understanding. submitted by

2024.05.19 00:15 Medium-Wing-4710 The harrowing experience of a cancer-surviving partner turned abuser
Over the course of my 4 year marriage to my partner, I have arrived at the position that I was abused, manipulated, and functionally enslaved to a mentally ill partner.
In simplest form, the progression is apparently observable. She was diagnosed with cancer in October of 2019 while we were engaged. Due to the diagnosis, we moved up our actual marriage date (our wedding was still set for mid-April) to December 1, 2019. Her surgery was December 13, 2019. In my compassion for her, I agreed to move our wedding date up to offset her anxiety around who would be responsible for her if things went south with her surgical treatment.
Our first month of marriage was straightforward; she was on pain meds recovering from surgery, so the main engagement that occurred was me walking her up and down the hospital hallway as she recovered and trying to meet her base physical needs of hygiene, food, and presence. We stayed in the hospital for 2-3 weeks (with recurring hospital visits for complications).
Quickly after we figured out our marital living situation in her small 3-bed apartment with 2 roommates, our relationship devolved. Specifically, she was irritable because of the pain she was in, causing her to lash out at me with regular frequency for small things. If I didnât put clothes away in the right place, didnât anticipate her needs (without her communicating them), or ate the wrong food in front of her she would shout at me and decry me for my thoughtlessness.
These small, critical engagements were wounding and created a distance between us â and there was no upside. She was never kind, never paid mind to needs I might have, and started down a path of cultivating a root of bitterness in her soul. She quickly revealed herself to be venomous, hateful, and vindictive when she felt like she was wronged â and any observation of concern about our marriage resulted me in being accused of being mean or insensitive, even if I spent hours or days calculating the best way to share my concern (and I have a masterâs degree in communication where I focused in studying disagreement â I know how to carefully package concerns).
During this time, I worked hard to provide for us, foreseeing a significant time period where I would have to be primary financial provider and caregiver. I increased my income each year we were married by around 25%, finishing our marriage at >$80,000 in yearly income, compared to starting our marriage at a modest $42,000 salary (including dramatically improving our healthcare). Frankly, I increased my income to provide for us in spite of the lack of support at home.
But to be clear: I donât think it would have been particularly difficult to provide financially if I had an ounce of support at home.
However, the relentless criticism and expectation of mind-reading continued through the years. I rationalized this abuse for the first year of our marriage because of all the excuses to be cruel, she had a good one â she had cancer. I hung onto a hope that it would stop. Contrary to my hope, as the years went on â and our expenses climbed â and I continued to work myself to the bone â she continued to relentlessly critique and even started being more emotionally demanding, expecting me to take responsibility for her inability to cope with her emotions â I was drowning. She was asking too much of me. There was no deliverance from her abuse.
I was exhausted. In the peak of the abuse I endured at her hand, I was working multiple jobs, sleeping 10+ hours a night and napping frequently during the day around meetings and work, then coping with alcohol to numb myself to the abusive dynamic and fall asleep with no support from her. The only time I could approach her sexually was when I was intoxicated, with inhibitions lowered. The only time I could have a conversation with her was with a counselor in the room. Without something to mitigate opportunity for her to be cruel to me, either a mediator or self-medication, I was scared.
I lived at home in a constant state of alert and cognitive fatigue. No matter how I tried to make sense of my home life, I couldnât. When she looked at or touched me, I would recoil in fear, anticipating some sort of incisive critique or demand expressed. Then she would criticize me for not responding warmly to her, exacerbating the cycle.
I couldnât meet her needs â I was utterly exhausted. When I would tell her of the exhaustion I experienced in marital counseling, her responses were typically something along the lines of not believing me, denying what I was saying was true, or calling my exhaustion an âexcuseâ. I could interact happily with my friends⌠why not her?
I did not deny her demands were legitimate; rather, I expressed my inability to meet them because of how fatigued I was. I said âI canâtâ so many times. I realize her demands were small; affection, saying âi love youâ, complimenting her. But itâs disorienting to be consistently berated and belittled by a person and then asked to compliment them and tell them you love them.
The push and pull of abuse is exhausting to a person who is not mentally because it does not make sense.
Further, in counseling I realized that I have forgotten that I have needs. I have lost the tools to even evaluate what my needs might be because, implicitly and explicitly in my marriage, I was told my needs donât matter.
My marriage made no sense; I was obviously drowning, exhausted with the demands our life imposed on me. I was doing everything I could to get straight. I was in individual therapy, marital counseling, pastoral counseling, trying different antidepressants (4 in total â all with no effect), changing eating habits, trying to reduce my drinking, getting medical tests to see if I had health issues causing my fatigue, and being vulnerable in my friendships in an attempt to invite others in to process and move forward and figure out my marriage. I desperately shared everything I could about my marriage, hoping someone else would crack the code where I couldnât.
None of my efforts worked. I could not get out of the exhausted state I was in. Itâs worth noting here that within weeks of separating I almost completely cut out alcohol, got into a regular sleep schedule, was waking up at 6-7am every day and reading multiple hours (which I couldnât do in marriage due to cognitive fatigue/distraction), and experienced a resurgence of energy. I have felt the duress I was under lift and lift and lift and the weeks and months have went on.
In retrospect, I was experiencing cognitive fatigue because I was taking the demands my wife was placing on me seriously, but no matter what I did I could not make sense of them. How could she not see that I was doing everything I could to make ends meet â the ends which she was imposing on me? I did not have additional energy left. She would ask me âDo you love me?â and I didnât know how to respond. How is my work not at least some symbol of love? My dream was to be a poor professor, which she knew â instead I was grinding myself to the bone, working in digital marketing with multiple freelance projects, picking up a bartending gig and a teaching gig on top of full-time employment.
The last straw was when she accused me of abuse. I took that accusation seriously, and weighed it against my experience. âAm I an abuser?â I asked myself. I sorted through my behavior and how I treated her. I came to the conclusion that I may be a poor husband in serious ways; but I am not an abuser. And the abuse question opened the door to the question⌠âI may not be an abuser⌠but is there abuse in our marriage?â And the answer quickly became âYes.â
When we were married, I understood that she wasnât going to work much for a while. However, she worked the bare minimum she could for 4 years, earning at most in a single year $18,000. As the years went on and my income climbed, our debt continued to climb as well. She was still contributing the same, yet spending frivolously on useless knick knacks for our home and a cat. As I packed up our home to sell, the majority of items were dozens of boxes of useless junk sheâd accumulated.
She lived a life of mania around finances. We would go to marital counseling and she would regularly express, âI would rather be poor and happy than rich and sadâ. We were poor and sad. Sure, my income was the highest itâd ever been â but we were still drowning, with debts climbing. At the end of our marriage, weâd accumulated about $20,000 in consumer debt between credit cards and personal loans.
It was traumatizing (and abusive) to go to counseling and be told by my partner she would ârather be poor and happy and than rich and sadâ when the factual scenario we were living was neither. She actively denied reality â both my lived experience and the reality of our finances â at my expense. It was killing me, trying to make sense of what we were going through but being unable to make sense of what I was being told and what I was experiencing.
Throughout this time, it is worth adding that she also leveraged my spiritual leadership to âset me straightâ. I was in a conservative Evangelical space, believing that men are the ultimate provider in a family unit and primarily responsible for the status of the marriage. Because I was not doing what she wanted me to (lavishing her with affection), I was muscled into multiple groups and meetings where pastoral care intervened to restore our marriage. In the moment, I submitted to my pastoral care because of my trust for them and my faith in God. Now, I believe this dynamic was abusive; my pastoral care did not care in any sense for my soul; they only cared about fixing my marriage. No questions around âwhyâ my marriage was so bad were asked; only what was going on and how it could be fixed. I relish the thought of my pastoral care being held accountable for the abuse they exercised upon me during this time on judgment day, albeit through a shaken faith in a God that would enable this dynamic.
With my spiritual community, I shared that I felt like she was my tormentor; that she it felt as if I were on the ground due to exhaustion, and she was standing on my throat, telling me to âget upâ and âtell me you love meâ; that our metaphorical life was a boat, sinking, and I was desperately bailing out water. All the while, she stood at the other end of the boat, desperately bailing water in and looking at me like I was a maniac.
And yet, because there was no adultery, there was no category for divorce. We had sworn an oath before God and were required to fix this.
As I reflect upon my marriage (and the ongoing divorce proceedings), a few things are clear.
She is an abuser. I donât think she intends to be, but impact matters. She is mentally ill and unable to reckon with basic reality.
She is a manipulator. She manipulated my spiritual community against me. I was viewed as someone to be corrected while begging for help from my trusted friends and pastoral care, whom I now regret being vulnerable with due to their abuse and denial of my reality because I didnât fit neatly into their thin theological categories.
She is an enslaver. In divorce proceedings, she is doing everything she can to get every dollar from me, leveraging student loans I did not co-sign, my continually increasing income due to my hard work, and denying every claim of dissipated assets she can.
It is truly a mind-breaking experience to see your compassion leveraged against you for money. I had to sit under an attorney proclaiming to a judge that, since I consented to move up our marriage date before her cancer surgery, âI knew what I was getting intoâ. That she is entitled to large sums of money (that do not exist; we never had more than $3000 in our bank account during marriage) due to that decision.
Even apart from the abuse, I did not know what I was getting into. Including the abuse, I am full of remorse for having invited such an evil, hateful person into my life.
This experience has been the most challenging to my faith. As I endured abuse from her, I trusted God in a few ways. That the compassion I showed would maybe be rewarded â or, at least not punished. That my spiritual community wanted what was best for me. That God was not a punitive, hateful God (like my partner). I do not believe this trust was well placed, but am open to shortcomings in my views here.
I struggle to consent to a God that allowed my experience to occur. Iâm open and processing in some kind of faith, but I really donât know what it looks like to find a place to put this pain and betrayal that Iâm experiencing.
I am a survivor of abuse, and the abuse I endured was mind-shattering. I sacrificed everything to support a partner diagnosed with serious bodily illness, which drove her to hate me and deny my lived experience because she could not reconcile it with the hatefulness she cultivated over our marriage, choosing bitterness over any positivity for four years, poisoning my well-being in the process.
What I envisioned to be the most compassionate moment of my life â marrying a person with cancer and promising to support and love them â has become nothing but a symbol of pain and remorse. I envisioned a life where my partner and I would fight against the terror of cancer; instead she hopped to the other side, choosing her ongoing health issues as the ally and myself as the enemy.
It took me 4 years to realize it. And as she drags me through court to leverage every dollar out of me I can, my only regret is that I didnât leave my abuser to her own devices sooner; self-pity, hatefulness, and a sheer disregard toward taking responsibility for anything.
I am grateful but drowning. As we are negotiating settlement, the end is near, and my abuser will soon be unable to execute any influence in my life.

Basically what the title says. I just want to know if I should be concerned with having to go to court, or what anyone elseâs experience has been with this. I canât afford to pay currently, which is why I have the debt to begin with. I live paycheck to paycheck and am terrified.
